Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

With the rise to enduring power of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal in 1933, a new type of Republican emerged in reaction to FDR's attractive and overawing power: the me-too Republican. Until the election of President Reagan five decades later, these me-too Republicans supported, rather than opposed, Democratic Party policies but claimed they would administer them better. Of course, this led to a half-century of Democratic dominance of American government and politics.

FDR himself cruelly mocked this pathetic breed of spineless, protect-your-career-at-any-cost Republican politicians:

"Let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion which says: 'Of course we believe all these things. We believe in Social Security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them; we will do more of them; we will do them better; and best of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.'"

Now, on the cusp of what some think will be a major Obama victory, we are beginning to see emerge what I will call "me-too conservatives" -- initially among conservative commentators (politicians to follow). I have in mind, among others: Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Chris Buckley, David Frum and Kathleen Parker.

Of course, they are not quite saying they are giving up conservatism for whatever it is Obama would bring. They are initially focusing on style or, in the newly arrived cliche, temperament -- a term made famous, interestingly, to describe FDR as possessing a second-class intellect but a first-class temperament.

The hopelessly enthralled David Brooks wrote recently:

"(Obama) doesn't seem to need the audience's love. But they need his. The audiences hunger for his affection, while he is calm, appreciative and didactic.

"He doesn't have F.D.R.'s joyful nature or Reagan's happy outlook, but he is analytical. His family is bourgeois. His instinct is to flee the revolutionary gesture in favor of the six-point plan." That is, amusingly, almost exactly what Vladimir Lenin's admirers, such as John Reed in "Ten Days That Shook the World," used to say in contrasting Lenin's style to the fierier Leon Trotsky. (Note: I am making a style point, not a substance point.)

But they all cast their admiration for Obama in contrast with Sarah Palin -- whom they mischaracterize through a process of intellectual and historic dishonesty tempered by cultural snobbery and fear.

For example, Peggy Noonan charges that Palin's "political decisions seem untethered to a political philosophy. She does not speak seriously but attempts to excite sensation -- 'palling around with terrorists.' But it's unclear whether she is Bushian or Reaganite. She has spent her time throwing out tinny lines to crowds she doesn't, really, understand. This is not a leader, this is a follower. She could reinspire and reinspirit; she chooses merely to excite. She doesn't seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts."

Oh, my. Has Peggy been napping up there on Mount Olympus through the past several generations of American politics? She accuses Palin of not engaging America in a Socratic dialogue, of using phrases untethered to a political philosophy. Exactly what philosophy are the slogans "change" and "hope" tethered to? American presidential campaigns, with very few exceptions, have been little more than slogans shouted in the hopes that crowds will be excited by them. The much-admired Obama campaign has been the greatest exemplar of style over substance. However, it is Peggy Noonan's completely unsupported sneer at Palin's mental capacities that is most revealing.

I think that Peggy may have unconsciously touched on what really is going on here when she accuses Palin -- who is attracting crowds as big, if not bigger than any Reagan ever drew -- of being a "follower not a leader." Peggy's unconscious fear may be that it will be precisely Sarah Palin (and others like her) who will be among the leaders of the about-to-be-reborn conservative movement. I suspect that the conservative movement we start rebuilding on the ashes of Nov. 4 (even if McCain wins) will have little use for overwritten, over-delicate commentary. The new movement will be plain-spoken and socially networked up from the Interneted streets, suburbs and small towns of America. It certainly will not listen very attentively to those conservatives who idolatrize Obama and collaborate in heralding his arrival. They may call their commentary "honesty." I would call it -- at the minimum -- blindness.

The new conservative movement will be facing a political opponent that will reveal itself soon to be both multiculturalist and Eurosocialist. We will be engaged in a struggle to the political death for the soul of the country. As I did at the beginning of and throughout the Buckley/Goldwater/Reagan/Gingrich conservative movement, I will try to lend my hand. I certainly will do what I can to make it a big-tent conservative movement. But just as it does in every great cause, one question has to be answered correctly: Whose side are you on, comrade?

overwritten, over-delicate commentary
the best description of Peggy Noonan's hackneyed WSJ column and little-girl voiced commentary I've ever heard. I think you've hit the nail on the head. These so-called conservatives were fine with getting Bubba's votes, but would rather have a Marxist as President than see Bubba actually govern himself.

There time is over and they are increasingly irrelevant. They remind me of most of the MSM's disdain for alternative news sources. How dare anyone bypass them (the annointed) and think for themselves.

In Peggy's case she's been name-dropping Reagan for over twenty years as if this makes anything she has to say relevant or gives her credibility as a true conservative. National Review has always been a little bit snobby and elitist, but they really need to clean house. Buckley, Parker, Noonan, and Frum all have ties there.

............
Great article.

Blankley Hits the Nail on the Head
Great analysis, Tony.

Reagan would be disgusted with what he is seeing from these MSM elitists (Buckley, Parker, Frum, and Noonan) who believe they are the only media that knows what is true . . . what is real. Hmm, that reminds me of the Democrat party. Maybe that is where they all belong. They are all welcome to vote for the empty-suit Obama if they so choose.

Left out the name
of the biggest "me-too conservative".

John McCain.

Mr. "Reach Across the Aisle".

Mr. McCain-Feingold, McCain-Lieberman, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Launtenberg.

Mr. Amnesty. Mr. Cap-and-Trade. Mr. Bailout.

Of course, he's not really a "me-too conservative".

He's a liberal. That's even worse.

Thank you, sir!
Mr. Blankley, your welcome to my conservative revolution any day! You're a street fighting man!

Thanks, Tony.
Peggy Noonan has always, in my opinion, been an overrated gas-bag. She swoons well & punctuates well, and does an excellent rendition of breathlessness, but that's about it. I only read her when a pope or an ex-president dies.

The problem with conservatives (again, just my opinion) has been the one-size-fits-all brand of governance: Cut taxes! Making a buck trumps everything else on the horizon, even the culture itself. Conservatives, like Joe the Plumber, once they own that small business, want to be able to drive down to the corner & hire ditch-diggers without regard to their legal status so as to avoid payroll taxes. Not a policy we can bank on, culturally. Prompting the question: Whose side are you on, Amigo?

Attention-spans are incredibly short these days. Small matters like impeachments & market-crashes & terror attacks get about two weeks in the spot-light. Causing me to wonder if any sort of 'movement' based on ideas or principles, without a media star like an Obama or a Reagan behind it, is even possible.

Me Too
At least rats jump off a sinking ship, they don't turn on each other first.

Let's Play "Survivor!".....
I'm starting to get the impression that the GOP chattering class want to get right to the REAL contest. Forget about all of that superficial stuff like the Presidential election...We're playing the GOP Survivor Game! Yes contestents, you know how this game works..Anytime, anyone of any Republican note, does ANYTHING to question the kool aid drinkers, then they MUST be VOTED OFF THE ISLAND!...We've already eliminated Kathleen Parker (beltway elitist!), David Brooks (well he writes for the NY Times),Chris Buckley (ONE 'acorn' that fell far from the tree)..And "YES" boys and girls, we've given the boot to Colin Powell. You remember him: Worked for 3 Republican Presidents, Four Star General, National Security Advisor, yada,yada..OK, back to our game...Now here's the most IMPORTANT "benefit" of this no-holds-barred battle for the "hearts and minds" crew..Everytime we throw one of these La'uzers off the island we're casting off many potential converts (Moderate voters, Independents, etc) that we need to actually win the election!...So What!! Forget about "in-trade" and the polls and NOBAMA..We're looking to get down to the very end of this thing..Who's going to left standing..Can Blankley survive?..Will it be Rush? or Hannity? or "The Speaker"?...Hey, maybe Michele Bachman can ask the media to decide!...Well, I've got my longshot already lined up. I'm betting on Thomas Sowell. Sowell's is quite familiar with going against the grain to please his uh base..He'll never "sell out"- never has!..We can count on him!....And let's not forget, "I would vote for Colin Powell"- uh, I mean "Thomas Sowell in ANY election!"...Sorry Peggy Noonan, we know you wrote the speeches that made Reagan great ("Government can't solve the problem. Government IS the problem")...Alas Margaret, we hardly knew ye...In other words, See Ya!

Return of the COWBOY; The Plumber&Palin
*
Excellent piece Tony and great commentary LuLu but dont think this line of reasoning was seen hear first.
Ive been hearing it now for weeks and not where you might think; at work, school meetings, social gatherings of all types. The new conservatives are us, all the Bubba's from every walk of life who reval at the thought of the great individual spirit and personal tenacity, that made this country what it is and forever symbolized by the iconic Cowboy.
New conservatives dont have a billion dollars or write commenary in the National Review but make a good living and feel lucky to live in a place that made this luck possible. New conservatives don't share the wealth with society because they understand that true giving begins at home and starts with the notion of personal responsibility, thats why true conservatives dont need a village to raise their families, just a good neighborhood.
And true conservatives don't need to be reminded who Ronald Reagan was, he lives in the hearts of all of us regardless if we never heard his name.

We are still the Buckley/Goldwater/
Reagan/Gingrich movement, just our Congress forgot between 2000-2006 that they weren't elected to suffle up to the public trough and the president forgot to veto the excesses.

No permanent Rep. revolution was sustainable if our elected officials all turned into earmark-loving, perk-accruing, power-seeking toadies,

but the *conservative* press that spent too many months feeling cure with *McLame* and *McShame* epithets forgot that these elections mean the life and death of the

America who freed the slaves
then freed the slaves of the Spanish empire (Spn-Am. War,
then liberated all of Europe/world in 1918 and 1945,
then gave democracy and capitalism to Germany, Japan, S. Korea, and Taiwan,
then ended segregation in is own South,
and has led the entire globe against a pernicious and violent Islamic extremism.

Too often here instead of banding together, posters are eager to toss around *RINO* and neglect to realize the left never deviates, never goes off messasge, ruthlessly, and ceaselessly pursues its goals of godless socialism and the complete leveling of all ambition and belief.

Smaller government (gov't now the largest employer in the nation), lower taxes (flat tax),
strong foreign policy, free trade, and personal responsibility are goals Reps. should always focus on and not each other.

The Big O is exactly the opposite of all the above: the Land of O will have monstrously larger gov't-think of just the bureaucrats natinal health will need; higher taxes on all (because it's more *fair*), isolationism (as if anyone is protected by oceans today), protectionism helped start the Great Depression, and libs/Dems recognize no responsibility except gov't fiat.

Avoid all the above--vote McCain/Palin and let the deserters suffer buyers' remorse and go pound sand.

Great Article
Blankley is the first writer to point out that Obama's style, not just his program and tactic, is derived from Vladimir Lenin.

And he is right about the Me-Too Consevatives, who will essentially embrace Obama's eurosocialist, multicultural agenda.

I can already hear the handwringing post election bleaters who will complain "If only the amnesty bill had passed, McCain would have won", and "We will really have to push harder for the black vote if Republicans ever expect to win again." and similar stupid comments.

Johnson's Great Society programs were the infrastructure on which Obama built his campaign
and Bush's unconstitutional "faith based initiatives" laid the groundwork for Obama to fund all the Reverend Wrights out there who want to set up a joint venture with the feds and our taxes to "change" america by speadind black ldiberation . . . "theology".

10 Reasons Obama Not The One Part 1
10 Reasons Barrack Chavez Obama Not The One Part 1

lawrencehoule@yahoo.com

1. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the causes of this financial disaster. In order to ensure that they were not regulated these corrupt companies bought off congressmen. This is corruption. In just 3 years, these corrupt companies gave Obama $123,000 to buy him off. $123,000. Obama was the second largest recipient of Fannie and Freddie corrupt donations. This is the corruption McCain has fought against his whole life. $123,000 is corruption.

2. Earmark projects are corruption incarnate. Obama had 1 billion dollars worth of earmarks. 1 billion dollars. This is CORRUPTION RUN AMUCK. This money goes to political friends in return for support and donations, relatives, family members. We are in this mess because of this kind of corruption. 1 billion dollars of hard earned tax payer money FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET BOWL OF POLITICAL CORRUPTION.

3. Barrack Obama gave his First cousin $70,000 of tax payer money. $70,000 of hard earned tax payer money to his first cousin. We elect representatives to congress to serve the people. Not to ENRICH themselves. Not to enrich their family members. Not to enrich their political supporters. THIS IS TRULY CORRUPTION.

4. Obama wants to raise taxes on corporations, small businesses, capital gains. If you raise taxes in this economic crisis YOU WILL CAUSE A GREAT DEPRESSION. Business won’t create jobs. People will not invest. The 401 ks of seniors and all Americans won't be worth anything. The DOW WILL COLLAPSE TO to Four Thousand. The US will become another failed state like Venezuela. It’s that simple. If you want a SECOND GREAT DEPRESSION BARACK OBAMA IS YOUR MAN.

10 Reasons Obama Not The One Part 2
10 Reasons Barrack Chavez Obama Not The One Part 2
lawrencehoule@yahoo.com

5. Obama wants our troops out of Iraq in 16 months. As General Petraeus has warned such a withdrawal will lead to the collapse of the Iraqi government. Iraq is not Afghanistan. IT IS AT THE VERY CENTER OF THE OIL PRODUCING UNIVERSE. If the Iraqi government collapses, OIL PRICES WILL SOAR TO $200.00/barrel and $10.00/gallon/gas. If you want to pay $10.00/gallon/gas vote Barrack Obama.

6. Barrack Obama called our troops fighting in Afghanistan WAR CRIMINALS. He said that they were air raiding villages and killing innocent civilians. WAR CRIMES. You cannot be commander in chief of our great armed forces and call them WAR CRIMINALS. Not only that but these statements put THE LIVES OF OUR TROOPS AT RISK.

7. When Move On. org - a large money Barrack Obama supporter called General Petraeus – one of the greatest American generals – GENERAL BETRAYUS – Barrack Obama refused to vote on a senate motion defending this great general. You cannot be President of the United States and stand by while one of your generals is being viciously maligned. Obama did this because he didn’t want to lose the money from Move On. Barrack Obama is A COWARD.

10 Reasons Obama Not The One Part 3
10 Reasons Barrack Chavez Obama Not The One Part 3
lawrencehoule@yahoo.com

8. Barrack Obama gave $800.000 to a organization called Acorn. Acorn is trying to steal this election by fraudulently registering thousands and thousands of voters throughout this country – registering everything from dead people to cats, dogs. THIS IS CORRUPTION. Obama has a long and illustrious relationship with Acorn. Ladies and gentlemen of America in the rescue package of 700 billion just passed by Congress the Democrats tried to include $500,000,000 for ACORN. In Chicago, Obama was involved in training Acorn activists to go to the HOMES OF BANK PRESIDENTS AND THREATEN THEM IF THEY DID NOT GIVE OUT FRAUDELENT LOANS THAT COULD NEVER BE REPAID. $500 million to Acorn by the democrats in Congress and $800,000 from Obama. Can you imagine what will happen with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Obama in charge. Acorn will get the 500 million. 100%. Every vote is precious. It is the very essence of our democracy.

9. Bill Ayers was a terrorist who bombed the Pentagon, police stations and homes of people trying to capture him. Obama has a long and illustrious relationship with this arch criminal and hater of the US. Obama received $50 million dollars from Ayers to indoctrinate children in Chicago in revolutionary ideology. NOT READING AND WRITING AND SCIENCE BUT REVOLUTIONARY IDEOLOGY like Chavez teaches in Venezuela . Obama says - he was just a guy living in my neighborhood. Obama doesn’t understand that as President one of your most important obligations is NOT TO LIE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

10. Obama called the people of this country when he thought nobody was tape recording his great genius - Bitter people clinging to their bibles and their guns. You cannot denigrate the great people of this country and be their president.

BrianR
Great post! I've been telling people that McShame is a liberal since he was polling 8% in the primaries.

He is so right!
"It certainly will not listen very attentively to those conservatives who idolatrize Obama and collaborate in heralding his arrival."

We must not forget the Kathleen Parkers and Peggy Noonans of the world after Election Day. They have lost all credibility and do not deserve a place at the table of conservative discourse.

No conservative of any type could support Obama.

Time to grow another wing
We as Republicans need to say goodbye to the Chris Buckleys, the Peggy Noonans and all those who have enjoyed one too many Absolut martinis on the Cape with the playwrights and humanities scholars.

They let their principles wither; they went a little mushy in the middle. God knows it's easy enough to do. We all want to be liked. And we'd love to be liked by important people who have interesting things to say.

But in this century, with the wolf scratching at the gate, we can't let ourselves be guided by those who make common cause with people who fail - or prefer not - to see the dangers we face.

With them, it's like 9-11 never happened. Our erstwhile conservative colleagues have already sold out the President. It must have been too tough defending him year after year at all those chic affairs when everyone wanted to make fun of the 'nuke-u-lar' leader.

I've had no trouble backing my President, from Florida 2000 to November 2008. George W. Bush isn't perfect, but he stood up when we needed someone to remind us that nobody gets away with attacking America. He must have decided early on that he wasn't going to be loved by the Georgetown crowd. So he just went about his business tracking down terrorists and trying to keep us safe.

And they laugh at him for that. They don't deserve the shelter he's providing, him and all the wonderful soldiers we have somehow rediscovered throughout all this.

So we'll have to let that wing of our party drop off. Adios to the 'country club Republicans,' the 'RINOs', the 'social moderates'. They've chosen to run with a different set. So be it.

We can relocate the center of gravity for the GOP among the Joes and the Sarahs, the ones who are excited by the idea of being American and not blase and bored by the whole idea.

Jack

knowing who your friends are
Whew! The conservative landscape is going to be redrawn after this. I will never look upon Brooks or Noonan in the same way-- two writers to whom I have long listened.

R.I.N.O.s are evil
There was a segment of the GOP that is so hostile to the values of Christianity and the belief in the Judeo-Christian God, they would rather support a far left liberal than a moderate Republican. They had hoped that W. was a legacy appointment and a one-off, but Palin was too much. They feared a pattern and she confirmed it. The turncoats can join the MSM and the Democrats. The fate of Judas awaits them in the next life.

If McCain loses, the GOP is dead.

Because McCain is the GOP.

The GOP is the party for lousy liberals.

McCain is not any kind of conservative. He's just a mediocre liberal.

And that's what the GOP is: the party for subpar liberals.

Big whoop.

Mount Olympus

I think a fundamental cause of Peggy Noonan and David Frum's blindness is they really believe they can do it better - manage the country that is. The believe in the Socialism that has taken hold in the US, they just think they can manage better.

Of course they like that Harvard elitism that reflects their own experience and they can't distinguish because that threatens their image of themselves.

They don't see the value of everyone standing on their own two feet to the extend God has bestowed upon them the talent and physical capabilities to do so.

Dear Mr. Blankley
Can you lend a hand in having Kathleen Parker removed from Townhall.
Thanks

Over reacting to Obama
I really think Conservatives are over-reacting to the possible election of Obama.

Having lived through several Liberal Presidents I can tell you we will survive.

Its not the end of the world. Obama will do what liberals to best and that is make more people dependant upon government.

Yes Government spending will go up.
Yes the national Debt will go up.
Yes Taxes will go up.
Yes unemployment will go up.
Yes the economy will be in the trash.
Yes our educational system will continue its decline.
Yes crime will go up.
Yes Prison population will go up.
Yes Liberal judges will not follow the law but will make new law anytime they don't like what the law says.
Yes America will continue its decline in the quality of life.

To think we would continue to reap the benefits of what our founding fathers left us when we have deviated this far from their master plan is just not realistic.

This is the price we must pay for being lazy ignorant citizens unwilling to control our government. Ignorant in that we not only understand the gift they gave us.

To think our form of government lasted as long as it did and prospered as well as it did is a tribute to their wisdom.

Blankley's pending meltdown
Tough times for Blankley.

Don't blame Bush 43 for the ten trillion dollar National Debt, even tho HALF of this staggering debt occurred on his brief watch of eight years.

Don't blame neocons, both inside and outside of this administration, for the rapidly approaching one trillion dollar pricetag on Iraq...including their arrogance and ignorance in deeming unto themselves the right to deploy our military in half-baked, grotesque socio/political experiments in foisting democracies upon the Muslim world.

Don't blame GOP house of representives, in power for most of this decade, for the lax oversight and aversion to regulation that exacerbated the financial meltdown with which our nation is now contending.

Nope.

Blame Peggy Noonan.

Or Chris Buckley, or David Brooks and Kathleen Parker.

Pathetic article by Blankley.

erbauab
Are you really that stupid? Can you be so incredibly dumb that you actually believe what you write?

Your ignorance is mind blowing; your love of lies astounding! Your post is an insult to any real thinking peoples anywhere!

You must be another of these ignorant NY transplants living here in the 7th Borough in So. FL.

Read this if you want to know who is really blame for the meltdown; read this for reasons why your pal Obama is going to endanger us in this world, then try to realize Investors Business Daily isn't someon's partisan blog, which is where all you stupis libs cull your garbage herein that you post

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=3081860972 84712

The truly untethered
Mr Blankley is right.

Delicate sensibilities are themselves "untethered" that cannot distinguish north from south and the trade-offs in confronting a choice between a would-be President Obama, articulate in some senses, yes, but thoroughly leftist in world-view and who "clings" not to God or guns but to socialist ideals and unsavory alliances and a President McCain and Vice President Palin, less articulate and schooled, with the right instincts and principles and character of where our country should be headed. And records of doing so to boot.

Does that mean I would not prefer conservatives who are more adroit conceptually and can better articulate important truths? Yes I would--and it is an important--really vital--part of leadership--witness Churchill and Reagan. Clear, and yes, articulated conceptual thinking is an important thing for leaders who we need foresight from. But so is a moral compass (Churchill and Reagan again).

News flash to Noonan et al: We live in a world of trade offs where a sense of proportion and the fundamental truths must guide us. We do not have the choices of Churchill and Reagan before us. But we do have the halting, tenacious John McCain vs the glib and glamorous Obama, who can use words and concepts with such dexterity to even justify (and rationalize to himself, which is more scary) infanticide.

And one more thing, and it is not incidental: Obama is NOT a clear conceptual thinker but really quite obtuse, as exemplified in the types of moral equivalences and juxtapositions he makes in his statements. It reveals a confused mind at work actually in many ways, despite his underlying social-leveling principles. And Palin, fresh and direct in statement, might yet continue to grow in the way she first impressed with her convention speech--which in fact showed a conceptually grounded mind and one articulate at that. She is new to the national stage and one senses she will continue to surprise in this dimension.

Todd
Instead of calling me names, how about disputing the points I raised...specifically how the national debt has grown so much during Bush 43 years, abetted by a House of Representatives that was in GOP control for most of this decade?

And I guess most Americans are just plain wrong about Iraq(majority of Americans now think Iraq invasion was a mistake).

On the lack of regulation being a factor in the recent financial crisis, go to opinionjournal.com(Wall Street Journal website)today and read article by Arthur Levitt(former head of Securites and Exchange Commission), along with an article by Darrell Duffie(professor of finance at Stanford University).

Take a deep breath, now
Noonan and Parker have been level-headed, logical, persuasive voices of reason for the conservative philosophy for many, many years. Although I disagree with their analysis of Palin and Obama, I still value their opinions.

Instead of attacking their motives and values -- a disgusting little trick best left to the feeble-brained left -- we should make our case against theirs, on the merits.

I realize name-calling and vitriol can be lots of fun. I must admit I enjoy it myself on occasion. But let's not turn against some of our most effective advocates because we disagree with their conclusions.

Tony - right on as always
Peggy Noonan? I liked her book on Reagan but she hardly speaks for we Conservatives.

In actuality, your former associate, Newt Gingrich, speaks for us now. All the others are just hangers on who think they get it. That is not enough.

Federalism is not a bad idea. I think our Founding Fathers knew a little bit more about oppression to those of us who were born free in this country, thenks be to them.

You wouldn't know it if you walked into any college classroom with a lib dogma being spewed by lib profs everywhere.

All college students going back to the 70s have been brainwashed by the lib idea that the fed gov should be omnipotent; they are nover even told of the alternative and how limited gov. can allow for a more safely guarded democracy.

Tony, let Mr. Gingrich know there are folks loyal to the cause of Conservatism that are listening to him. I hope he stays out on the speaking circuit on college campuses to at least expose the myths they are being taught. He is doing the good work Reagan did after he left the Gov. of CA in '74.

Pres. Bush went way too left these past 8 years. I understand we have a war on terror that has bloated the budget. But he could have cut spending elsewhere - starting with that misguided pres. drug program.

It's a fact - the bigger the bureaucracy gets the more returns are diminished. There are no economies of scale in the bureacratic nightmare that Washington is now; it will be even worse should Obama win.

jerabaub

This wonderful video clearly explains how it all happened at:

or google the phrase "Teleprompter Covering Up The Fannie Mae".

Every American should know who caused our financial collapse which resulted in our 401ks and our home values to sink in value. We have been betrayed, not by the obvious greed of the banks, but by our congressmen who caused this to happen.

I have emailed these videos to everyone in my email address list. Spread this messge!

Maturity and True Self Reflection
Bush and the Neo Cons took over the Grand Old Party and threw it under the train. Their policies have buried McCain with the large debacles. They went against true conservative principles. You can rail against the MSM. The Fox News network can be seen as an accomplice during the Bush years. They went along with the Bush administration as they went against true conservative principles. I do not see any true conservative criticize Fox News or other so-called conservative voices for tacitly going with Bush and his failed policies. Don't worry they will win whether McCain wins or loses.

Todd
"Our nation's financial markets are in the midst of their darkest hour in 76 years. We are in this situation because of an adherence to a deregulatory approach to the explosive growth and expansion of America's major financial institutions. Our regulatory system failed to adapt to important, dynamic and potentially lethal new financial instruments as the storm clouds gathered. There is now a total breakdown in the trust necessary for a free and functioning market."

Arthur Levitt, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1993-2001.

the bad news is
Obama likely is going to win and have a left of center leadership and majority in both Houses. The result is going to big gov. like none of us has seen before; it'll be the hugest boondoggle in my 51 years.

It will give we Conservatives time to realign, renergize, and get our heads back on straight again.

And when the failure of an out of control bureacracy truly exposes the many failures it will manifestly affirm (think LBJ's Great Society, only worse) the next Conservative to come along will dismantle all those wasteful gov. agencies that exist now, and those that Obama builds in his 4 year term. And it will be only four years.

Why? I think maybe it might have something to do with the fact the people want to turn the key over to the White House to a man that could not even implement one policy iniative that led to a long term solution for the Chicago Public Schools in the Annenberg Challange. Not a one.

Now he is going to apply his magic touch so ably discounted by the Annenberg Challenge to the Fed Gov and 100s of billions of dollars in taxpayer money?

Doesn't add up - but like Tony says, it's style over substance with voters today.

Al in IL dumb again
Bush was never a neocon, nor were his assistants.

If they were, they would have dismantled the fed bureacracy where inefficient programs and waste exists.

What they did do was keep us safe. They made the contral front in the war on terror a patch of sand, instead of your front lawn.

Think about you lib ingrates.

Al's 7:29
Pretty much agree.

Until about a month or so ago, I had thought McCain was a better choice than Obama.

I then began to learn that some of his foreign policy advisors are from the same pool of neocons that rendered such disastrous advice to Bush on foreign policy.

McCain's chief foreign policy advisor, until recently anyway, was Randy Scheunemann, a registered lobbyist employed by the nation of Georgia to further its interests in Congress and in the Bush administration.

I fear McCain may be too strongly influenced by these persons, and we may well find ourselves in a confrontation with Russia over a nation that has no vital interests for the United States.

Fox News, Limbaugh, et al, were never forums for genuine conservative thought, but rather hacks and shills for the Republican party, and specifically for the Bush administration(especially on foreign policy).

jerabauble
Your last post was a jewel.

Georgia only has two of the major pipelines running nat gas and oil out to the Caspian Sea. Which Europe depends on. And which Putin wants to control (Reagan warned Europe about the dangers about getting into bed with the Russians as an energy supplier and they can now shut down Germany in a heartbeat).

Now, why do you think that is? Enlighten me.

While you are at it, where do our vital interestes begin in the defense of free peoples who had the bad misfortune of being thrown behind the darkness of an Iron Curtain for decades? Thanks to Yalta........when do two wrongs (Yalta plus isolationism now) ever make a right?

Arise! All you Warriors
Thank you Mr. Blankley for a brilliant, savvy expose of the current and possible, future political scene. Preach, brother, preach! Would Bill Buckley be rolling over in his grave at the thought of Chris stomping off like a two year old and sucking his thumb in Obama's camp instead of standing firm with (us), the unwashed masses? I do not know, however I have noticed in the last half-century or so, (especially lately) that anyone who is good and decent, honest, humble, works hard and believes in the good Lord, is vilified by the nastiest, most vile humans on the planet (or on California soil-whichever comes first).

me too republicans
Tony is spot on. I remember the likes of Tom Dewey as a typical me-too. Add Wendel Wilkie to the list. Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford while an improvement, were certainly not conservatives.

mod mark
You miss my point - Bush was never a Conservative. And now we are paying the price.

However, the number one job of the pres is to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the U.S. That he has done well.

His fiscal policy fell victim to the "deficits don't matter crowd"; but he made a deal with the devil (Dems in Congress) to ensure funding for Iraq.

Net positive - I will say it again because libs do not understand this one salient point: he successfully made the terrorists go to a patch of sand in Iraq, instead of their lib front yards and amlls here in the U.S.

One day, these ingrate libs of today will understand, as they age and get smarter and wiser.

jeratroll
Rush does speak for Conservatives. Go back to pol sci class and read some more - you need it.

Bush was never a true Conservative these past 8 years - except in his defense of your homeland.

By the way, I hope Obama repeals the Patriot Act - it will be a chance for you to see firsthand that your Dem heroes and lawyers in Congress know ZERO about risk and reward.

Risk? Some folks have their rights compromised.

Reward? We stop terrorists before they get here.

I'll take the reward as logically risk-assessed.

TruthHurts #8
"And he hits it outa' da' park on that one."

Excellant critique of the far right. And I do not doubt for one second that Sowell will be there somewhere.

The "Conservative" kool-aid drinkers love his simple solutions to complex problems.

By the way, did you know that America would be a much better place if we were all conservatives? That's what they tell us anyway.

Have a nice day.

Nice Try, Tony
McCain and Obama have a lot more in common than Tony will admit, but he's interested in power - that is, keeping him and his neocon pals in charge, once Obama rolls into town. So Tony's out to separate himself from the disaster he has helped cause.

McCain is almost - just not quite - as socialist as Obama. THERE is "me-too-ism."

And Tony can't bring himself to admit that the Obama wave flows from the revulsion that many millions of Americans have for George Bush's left-wing conservatism -- war, spending, and rewards for the super-rich bankers and defense contractors.

Tony supported it all. So beware swallowing his swill here -- he is only doing what all neocons do:

They all blame somebody else.

Iraq by the way
Hey kids, did you know that when Dec. 31st 2008 rolls around our UN mandate runs out and we will be there illegally?

Unless Iraq's government asks us to stay?

Yeah, we may finally be there illegally.

pablum
Hey, that's great! Then al qaeda can concentrate the resources they are using in Iraq right here to the the good old U.S.A.! Becasue it is obvious they cannot do both as shown by no attacks since 9/11.

Brilliant! You are so......wrong it is almost scary.

So, you looking forward to more terrorist acts here on U.S. soil? Is that it? Share with us how you became so ignorant! We want to know!

Todd
The policy begun by Clinton and vigorously pursued by Bush 43 to "nato-ize" former Soviet republics, extending membership to nations right on Russia's border, has antagonized Russia.

We now are seeing the consequences.

Why this obsession with nato-izing former Soviet republics, especially since the Warsaw pact, which was the reason NATO was created in the first place, no longer exists?

In my opinion, we sabotaged Reagan's legacy.

Reagan and Gorbachev were on excellent terms.
Even relations between the U.S. and post-Gorbachev Russia(Yeltsin)were warm.

And Bush himself peered into Putin's eyes, and proclaimed his soul was good.

We had a historic opportunity to continue good relations with the Russians.

Now we seem to be adversaries.

We need to work with Russia on securing Soviet era nukes, on allowing essential NATO military provisions to transit Russian territory enroute to Afghanistan, and on our mutual interest in dealing with Islam extremism(Putin has his problem in Chechnya).

Instead we antagonize them by flaunting nato membership right under their nose, and by sanctimonious lectures by Bush on democracy.

Russia is an authoritarian nation that wants to reassert her power.

We could have handled the situation far better.

And had we done so, we now would not be dealing with a hostile Russia.

I don't recall Reagan invading the USSR in order to free the people there.

Yet Bush invaded Iraq to free its people.

Would Reagan?

Reagan covertly sided with Saddam in the Iran/Iraq war.

In fact, Reagan(gasp) talked to, and even negotiated with the Soviets, something Bush until very recently has refused to do with socalled "axis of evil" Iran and North Korea.

Yep.

Refusing to talk to them did us alot of good.

Chris in VA
"they (neocons) all blsme somebody else"

You mean like Barney Frank and his Dem pals blame Bush and Republicans for Frank's creation of the meltdown?

Deeds, not policy differences and interpretations, mean more than inconsequential posts like the one you just left.

Jack #17
"I've had no trouble backing my President, from Florida 2000 to November 2008. George W. Bush isn't perfect, but he stood up when we needed someone to remind us that nobody gets away with attacking America."

And then he went and invaded Iraq.

And then he never vetoed a single bill from 2000 to 2007 increasing our National debt to $9 trillion dollars.

And then he ignored Katrina.

And then he let the dollar sink to it's lowest value ever, which increased the price of fuel.

ILLINOIS DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL JINX
Every Democratic candidate for President who was linked to Illinois by either birth or residence lost to his Republican rival. This has happened six times in history: three for William Jennings Bryan, two for Adlai Stevenson and one for Stephen Douglas (who ran against Lincoln in 1860). Now the Democrats are running their 4th Illinois candidate, a man less qualified for office than the other three, hoping that after 148 years and six failures to finally break their Illinois presidential jinx. Oddly, if the Illinois born Hillary Clinton were the Democratic nominee, or Barack Obama's running mate, the victory would have been practically guaranteed and the jinx put into the dust bin of history.

Click ApolloSpeaks and read more about the great Illinois jinx for Democratic presidential candidates.

Todd
They say hope springs eternal.

And even a blind squirrel stumbles upon an acorn occasionally.

So too you have stumbled upon a truth...to wit: Rush does not speak for conservatives and the equally valid point that Bush is no conservative.

Now don't let this extremely rare esposure to the truth die on the vine.

Nurture it.

Ken #25
Actually the national debt has gone down under Democratic administrations. And it went up under Republican administrations.

http://www.cedarcomm.com/~stevelm1/usdebt.htm

Just wanted to make sure you had the correct facts.

How's that unemployment rate doing so far? Has it been as low as during the Clinton administration?

Palin a Leader?
Unfortunately, Noonan's criticism of Palin is valid. Palin has not shown that she subscribes to any principles of government. That makes her a wild card, like McCain. You don't know what she'll do. The word "capitalism" didn't come out of her mouth until an Ohio plumber did what neither McCain nor Palin had done - defended the right of a man to keep the money he earned.

Sorry, but that is a follower, not a leader, and worse, it shows she is a follower of opinion polls. We don't need any more Republicans sticking their finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing, before defending a man's right to his own money.

But Blankley is right about the "me too" conservatives, those who approve of government power so long as they are the ones wielding it. But those are the Bushies, not those who despise the worst big government president of the last seventy years.

All that power that Bush claimed for himself will now be turned over to the only man capable of making us forget how bad Bush was by being incomparably worse. And George Bush made Obama not just possible, but inevitable.

RINOS, Please Leave the Arena!
Excellent article, Tony!

I used to admire Peggy Noonan but evidently age has siphoned off her rugged, incisive, Reagan-like conservatism and she has morphed into just another nice old lady who doesn't want to hurt anybody or say bad things--except about fellow Republicans.

As for Christopher Buckley, he should stick to his comedy act. Obviously he suffers from the famous father envy syndrome as does Ron Reagan. We know you're not and never will be WFB or the Great Communicator--just live your lives and respect your famous fathers.

At a time when our nation is facing the greatest challenges in our lifetimes, we discover fellow Republicans are turning into, what, Nelson Rockefeller? Politics is a blood sport and those who call themselves conservative Republicans better shape up or get out of the arena if they can't take the heat.

In fact, many of them seem to echo the namby-pampy Republicans who, while in the majority, overspent and over legislated us into gigantic deficits. Bring back the ruthless cost-cutters and the hawks who believe in America and in the Reagan philosophy of aggressive leadership!

No pale twits for the real conservatives!

Pablum - wrong again
He invaded Iraq as a two-pringed strategy - get rid of a mini-Stalin in an unstable region and invite the Jihadists to come running to our trained soldiers in Iraq instead of your backyard. You libs are such ingrates.

Second, the bills he was sent were mostly of a national security concern first term; those that were co-sponsored spending programs with Dems he glady approved because he knew he needed backing on his Ira funding.

Katrina? How about the idiot Dem mayor and the Dem Gov - who hid in her closet and waited several days before she demanded fed troops? That is on her, not Bush.

They are all at fault but blame begins, and which you totally ignore (conveniently) on the local and state levels.

jerabauble
Rush does speak for Conservatives, just like Al Franken speaks for intellectually challenged, unfunny comedians (and libs)

trolls - be gone!
Go back to the haters who spill vile filth and wanton disrespect in the most anti-social ways possible in dailkos and huffypost.

Go sing the praises of BJ (Bill Jefferson) Clinton and your new miracle-maker, Obamius, in a free an open manner instead of making veiled attempts that you actually understand anything but far left dogma.

And that Palin thing
Did you know that in Wasilla, Alaska the mayor is not responsible for the police department, the fire department or social services and has no influence or impact on their operation?

So Gov. Palin ran a city that gives her no responsibility for municipal services and then was promoted to governor where she had no contact with the National Guard?

And she has more "experience?"

And why won't the McCain campaign let her talk to the media?

I am still
100% behind McCain in the end. I talk him up anywhere I go - in line at a bank, a grocery store, to the guy or gal pumping gas next to me; in a mall or in a restaurant; at dinner with friends, at a party.

Anywhere I might make a point that LBJ=Carter=Obama - and disaster.

Note I left out BJ (Bill Jefferson) Clinton because he was a center Republican - because of Republican control of the House and Senate.

He couldn't have done it without them!

Todd #49
I would hold the "no attacks since ..." stuff for a little while. It took Al Quida a long time to get 9/11 right.

And if you think Bush was correct in attacking Iraq while pulling Special Ops teams out of Afghanistan then I believe you may have missed the point of attacking Afghanistan in the first place.

Tood
By the way, I am not willing to surrender my constitutionally guaranteed rights to anyone in the belief that they will keep me safe.

I reserve the right to be concerned for my safety and free, not safe and controlled.

Todd
If I have to worry about Al Qaeda cutting off my head and making my wife wear a Burka after 7 years of war with them, then that really doesn't make the case for Bush being very efficient in keeping us safe, now does it?

And America getting attacked before the election or in between the election and the new presidency? If that does happen, that doesn't speak too well to Bush having kept us safe, either.

Your fear-mongering is absolutely retarded. If we are so "safe" because Our Dear Leader, then why do I need to be so constantly afraid of a bunch of people living in caves over 3000 miles (most of it Ocean) away?

Perhaps your real fear is that the whole Bush has kept us safe is just what it is: BS. Our military has kept us safe. Our intelligence community has kept us safe. What Bush has done is shred the constitution and created some of the scariest power grabs in history, which will now be in the democrats hands. God help us all.

Before 9/11/2001, when was the last time we were attacked on U.S. soil? How many years was that, compared to how long since?

Sorry, I am a conservative, but you are simply a braindead puss who is scared of the boogeyman and thinks big government will protect you. And you hate us conservatives because we want to shrink father government.

I would never vote for Obama, but anyone holding their nose and voting for McCain should immediately stop calling themselves conservatives. Call yourselves Republicans and leave our reputation alone. America hates us because they think YOU are us. Afterall, you keep telling them you are. Maybe it's really a leftist conspiracy to destroy conservatism?

Todd
"I am still 100% behind McCain in the end."

Then you have proven my suspicions. You are most definitely not a conservative.

Todd #58
If rewriting history is your thing that's fine with me.

Bush's stated and/or implied goals were, depending on the day and which way the wind was blowing;
(1) Saddam had used gas on his citizens and may use them on someone else
(2) He is not abiding by the UN resolutions
(3)We want freedom for all enslaved people
(4) Saddam had direct connections to 9/11
(5)He will not allow UN inspectors into the country.
(6) He has weapons of mass destruction
(7) He is attempting to purchase nuclear components on the open market.
(8) He has manufacturing capabilities for poison gas (reference the tractor trailers in the photograph)
(9) He poses a significant and immediate threat to our country with his williness to use WMD's, his remote control aircraft and his terrorist connections.

I think there are more but I have to run.

Todd
Maybe I just have a little more faith in the men and women of our military than you.

To imagine a scenario in which Al Qeada will be freely roaming your little rural neighborhood slicing off heads and enacting sharia law certainly doesn't speak to confidence in our military. In fact, it doesn't speak well to the American fighting spirit and bravery of its civilian population, either.

I mean, seriously, you bring it up as if it is somehow given that America will simply surrender to a direct invasion of these cave dwellers (won't their camels get tired swimming all the way over here?

It's just ridiculous, Todd. And that is why this stupid line of reasoning isn't working this time.

All the Republican party needed to do to win was run and back a conservative. That's it. BE CONSERVATIVES. Adhere to the Republican principles. If they had simply done that, we wouldn't have to sit here trying to scare everyone into voting for us anyway.

And Todd
This article was really written more for people like you than me. As the author noted, you don't really mind big government as long as your party is in control of it, you just think you can manage it better than the liberals.

He was talking about YOU, Todd.

Nobody "manages" big government, Todd. Government was meant to be on a leash because it is like Godzilla in Manhattan.

Of course, you will come back and say you agree with me, yet you will vote for it. Why? Because the "alternative is just too bad!" What alternative, Todd? Republican big government, or Democratic big government?

Tony
You is so right. A courageous article woven of the finest, virgin cloth. Tony has just hit the ten ring so many times in this article that his target is in tatters. These "conservative" writers value their social connections a great deal. To preserve these and their sense of self esteem they must join in the condemnation of the anti-socialite, Sarah Palin (She shoots Moose. How dreadful!) These writers are venal and they have literally sold out.

NeoCons gave rise to Obama
Tony and his fellow NeoCons are responsible for the rise of Obama.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/023606.html

As soon as Mr. Blankley
gets off the Republican bandwagon and turns his talents towards Independents who can actually make for a real restoration of Constitutional self government, the better. Alas, I doubt that this elite opinion journalist can do it.

He like the many others, refuses (I say that because I don't think he is a stupid fellow) to see that the two parties accumulation of such immense power has generated the pure partisanship that is destroying our beloved nation. There is no other issue more important than that one.

As this great country gets ready to embrace the Euro-Socialist agenda and its anti-American New World Order, those who still love freedom need to wake up. If you do not understand how this happened to us, I urge you to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. It is the one place you will learn how we have been duped and had our inheritance stolen from us. Thanks, Joe

Responding to your column and your call
Like you, Tony, I have been experiencing a gathering sense of purpose for doing what I can to save this grand nation from what appears to be its fatal lurch leftward.

As dispiriting as it is to read and hear from the "me-too-conservatives," I know there remains a strong core of our citizenry well aware of our founding principles and utterly committed to their defense.

I join you in that group, Tony, and will be seeking ways I can offer my modest gifts and passionate heart to the cause of freedom.

Thank you for your considerable service to our country.

Warmest wishes,

John Dallas Bowers

me-to-conservatives
Thank you, thank you for this well written article about the columnist who have trashed McCain - Palin and the conservative issues in favor of the pro- government socialist agenda of Obama.

Finally
It is such a pleasure to see conservatives acknowledging that there is very little difference between Republicans and Democrats. Both are primarily focused upon remaining in power or regaining power, the people be damned. Both are beholden to special interests. Notice how the money has flowed to the Dems this election cycle. In years past, Republicans were awash in cash. We have been played by the Republicans since the "gipper." This "conservative" administration doesn't even know the true cost of the debacle in Iraq.

Rhinos on the Rise since 2006
Mr. Blankley has a point, but these Democrats-in-Republican-Clothing have been on the rise since 2006, and some of them have finally 'outted' themselves and switched political parties. Others, such as John McCain, have simply made it clear that their view of the Republican platform is not particularly conservative in nature. To me, that's a particular problem because it leaves a conservative wondering where to go for viable political representation. Voting for the lesser evil, rather than on the candidate one would actually want to support, gets old after a while.

me-too conservatives
Great analysis. As well, there's an underlying professional jealousy to these pundits' defections, who hope to discredit the influence of Malkin, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. in aid of their own careers.

me too could explain '06
I'm on your side, Tony. FDR's words could explain well how a Republican Congress did so poorly after Newt left.

Blankley is part of the Problem
He supported the NeoCon disaster in Iraq from day one. No traditional Republican President would have taken the United States into Iraq. Not Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or Bush 1. Dubya Bush is the first truly NeoCon President and he has been a disaster. I do feel sorry for him. He's a good man who was surrounded by bad men. Instead of listening to an old warrior Colin Powell, he sided with Wolfowitz, Feith, Perle, Abrams, Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Kristol. Now the GOP is looking at an historic wipeout.

BIRTH OF BRAIN DEAD BIPARTISAN VOTERS
BRAINDEAD VOTERS

.....This election is beginning to remind me of the OJ trial ...everyone in the Country, except for some blacks who were in denial, knew that OJ was guilty ...the evidence was plain for all to see but he was aquitted anyway ...

.....The evidence that Obama is a left wing radical with a lot of Marxist ideas is out there also but 50% of the voters are planning to vote for him anyway ...

.....If Obama wins the election then 2008 will become a watershed year in History ...it will be the year that Americans decided to reject Republicanism and opt for Socialism ...

.....The Rubicon will have been crossed ...there will be no going back .....COLOSSUS

....the me-too Conservative
Tony is right on here. Where have the real conservatives gone?

What is this dissing of Sarah Palin all about among conservative pundits, etc., anyway? She has accomplished more than either Joe Biden and Barack Obama combined. She is what middle America admires--common sense and directness, values seemingly only abstractly admired among our elite conservative pundits these days!

There is no question that this Administration has messed up badly, and conservatives need to admit it. I doubt whether IKE or Nixon et al. would have gotten us into the mess we are in both foreign policy and domestically. Conservatives need to get back to solid principles and purposes, admitting mistakes, and getting on with reconnecting with the" Joe the Plumbers" of the world and quit playing to elite sentiments and interests. If the don't, expect the leftist and socialist-type trends to accelerate to where elitists will continue to benefit at the expense of the rest of us.

The New Conservativism
Many of us ex-Republicans are cheering Obama on not because we love Obama but we hate what conservatism has become. I hope a new conservatism -- a rational, pragmatic, honest and honorable conservatism -- does rise from the ashes. And I hope it looks nothing like what Blankley or Brooks or especial Frum would like it to be.

Noonan's jealous...
a lot of women are projecting on Palin and you can tell by their level of dishonesty and hypocrisy who they are. She has a lot more experience than Obama does, she has a record that Obama doesn't have, she is not a lemming or after cocktail party invitations, and she doesn't really give a damn what Noonan says.

I always thought Peggy Noonan was a boor and a phony, so this doesn't surprise me at all. Huffington is, too. I'm an Independent and descended from Revolutionary War soldiers. They are in no position to be telling me what to think or anyone else. This used to be a free country, but I'm not sure how long it will last with so much of the media as corrupt as it is now. The enemy lies within.

Donjinda, no true conservative
would be cheering Obama on, get real. We don't have to choke down people's BS in the spirit of community, it is destroying the community.

Great article
Mr. Blankley!

I'm voting for Palin.
She rocks.

I'm boycotting phonies who are holding her to a higher standard than they would men. No more clicks on their articles, that just supports them and helps them hold their jobs. I posted a few choice words to that "crap for brains" Kathleen Parker last night and that's it. Party's over, get real or get lost.

pablo st. cruz
Hey pablo, did you know that our military leaders are working with the Iraqi leaders to get us out of there? We won't be there illegally. Of course, by posting that you have admitted that we are there legally per UN mandate.

Vindex
I am a Conservative - and smart enough to know McCain is better than Obama. So what's your point? You won't because McCain isn't?

Get going lib - you should be working for Putin's misinformation dept.

Come to think of it, you can go work in Obama's misinformation group.

Vindex
I want to add to my last reply - been busy here at work.

You say you are a Conservative?

Wrong - you are a stroke.

any way you strokes
Shout out to Vindex, Pablum, Jerabauble, Mod_Mark, et al.!

Any way you strokes in this forum, posing as Indies and Conservatives, want to slice it, you cannot escape the following:

LBJ=Carter=Obama which is same as and equal to disaster cubed = whole lot of pain.

Note I left out BJ (Bill Jefferson) Clinton because he was a center Republican - because of Republican control of the House and Senate.

He couldn't have done it without them!

Bet you losers can't wait to see Obama cut and run in Iraq? I bet you'll celebrate with a game of - polo or croquet?

You Dems are in for some big surprises when the Neville Chamberlin of America, Barack Obama, gets tested.

Tony is so right . . .
about this...what did Goldwater say? "Give people a choice between a dimestore New Deal and the real thing, and they'll take the real thing every time."

Tony is right, but...
...I think he mis-read Noonan's column. She was decrying a dumbing-down of political debate, terminology and analysis. And she did not spare Obama (or McCain, or Biden, or the MSM) from her criticism. In answer to Tony's closing question (which side is she on?), it appears she is on nobody's side but her own.

Is that elitist? Probably. Does she represent a dying bread of conservatives? It's likely.

But I am stuck wondering this: As a long-time fan of Tony Blankley, how is he any different?

by the way Pablum
....I mean Pablo, the definition of pablum is:

"trite, naive, or simplistic ideas or writings; intellectual pap"

And may I remind you of a quote long ago by Abraham Lincoln in his Cooper Union Address in the elction season of 1860:

"What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried?"

Now, before any of you libs correct me that Linclon was a liberal, because that is what your lib profs have taught you, may I remind you they are wrong.

Lincoln was a Conservative in the context of his times. Lincloln was many things to many people - because he was a consumate politician and not afraid to give his opponent what they wanted to hear - if at some point he thought vis a vis a goal he had was to be accomplished for doing it.

In today's scene, he would be a Reagan Republican. To Lincon, especially in the context of his Cooper Union speech, is our Founding Fathers. Period.

You libs, with your idols in the Court(s) that want to read a living Consitution, and/or legislate from the bench to the contrary will of the people who legislate laws through their duly elected representatives both Fed and State, are completely ignorant of the guiding principle of Lincoln - the Founding Fathers.

Don't even bring up his suspension of Hab Corpus. He had to to uphold his oath that part of which covers "defend" the Constitution.

Because if you do not take care of the latter; the former(s) "preserve and protect" mean nothing.

peggy noonan
Her last few columns have been little more than upper class twit condescension to a person of the lower classes, who actually has the nerve to challenge the beltway chattering classes who have created the mess we are in. Sad and ugly.

AmericanWoman
No true conservative would want to be called a conservative anymore. I jumped off the bandwagon 15 years ago. I predicted Bush II and the religious fanatics would ruin the Republican party. The neocons added to the mess. I was pleased to see Victor Gold in "Invasion of the Party Snatchers" reach many of the same conclusions I did. Philip Gold (no relation) did the same in "Take Back the Right". Now a lot of opportunists -- like David Brooks -- are jumping ship. But there are plenty of honest people who have seen this wreck coming for some time. Your self-denial is predictable but irrelevant. If conservatives hope to be a force in the future rather than a party of recovered memories, they must take a hard look at themselves. No doubt many are not up to the task.

We are not Democratic Centralists.
That being stated, we have some adherence to cohesion of ideas and like-mindedness of action.

In Robert Bolt's profound play on the communist revolution,"State of Revolution", Lenin is told in Act One that another character has the right to disagree with him to which he replies, "yes and I have the right to kill you for it."

Now, when the stakes are high, (the election of a novitiate, corrupt, crypto socialist, hidden allele) such a Sen. Obama vs. the selection of a paradigm American such as Sen. McCain, what rightful conservative Republican dilutes passion and undermines victory?

We do not join with Lenin in killing those that do not join the consensus. They are free here. Free to find a pulse that can make them surge again. For with us, they are dead.

It is at days end, for pundits and populas, the Second Code of the West; "either you're wid me or you're agin me."

Correct!
I have always thought Tony had it right! We have had to endure this "we can do socialism better without calling it socialism" movement in the Republican party for 2 decades now, and what has become of our party?
Ten points behind in the polls, and a cadidate who only half believes in conservativism. Rush Limbaugh puts it best, when a person runs as a true conservative they win.
Why should anyone vote for a liberal republican, when democrats are so much better at it? When democrats run to the right of republicans, they win every time.
The bottom line is that conservatism works! Not watered down liberal conservatism, ala the Bushes, but Regan style conservatism. People know that opportunity is way better than a handout! and that is the tradeoff you get between conservativism and liberalism.

vonryan
Obviously, you are well read.

But just as obviously, the rest of what follows your second paragraph is "diluted" by the phrase "In Robert Bolt's profound play on the communist revolution,"State of Revolution", Lenin is told in Act One that another character has the right to disagree with him......"

There is nothing profound about Communism; neither the willing supporters of it nor those subjected to it - in a play or on the world stage. It is the "focus of evil" in this world, as Reagan so rightly said in an Orlando speech in 1983 (maybe it was early 84).

I could say the Martin Scorceses's movie "Raging Bull" is profound - but it would likely be profound only to another practicioner of the sweet science, or a fan of it.

So, may I deduce you are a fan of Socialist-Marxist principles, or is that too simplistic?

ModMark - re: independents
Independents do not have to vote for Democrats, I don't know where you got that idea. It just means they don't belong to one party or another. In my case, I do vote a mixed ticket on election day, depending on who is running and what is going on, and that includes Libertarians. I will be voting for some Dems on the state and local level, but the good ones are getting fewer and fewer over the years. Joe Lieberman is a good example of that. Obama is unqualified and cannot be trusted.

Being on the Right Side of Issues
That is all I want from the Republicans. I want a tax system that is fair to all - not just the poor. I want a Social Security system that is right - I want a legal system that renders justice - not a decision. I want the government out of my health care completely! I want a Republican party that "supports and defends the Constitution" as written and not as interpreted by a bunch of long-haired-hippy-type politicians and judges.
Tony is right about the me-too Conservatives. Thank you, Tony!

Just one question
This is for all of you alledged anti-socialism conservatives?

How many of you sent your 2008 Bush economic stimulous check back to the government?

True Conservative Woman
Sarah Palin is a true conservative woman.

I am very disappointed in the remarks by Noonan and Parker. Working within the belly of the beast for too long, they have become little more than peevish elitists who look with disgust at what a truly conservative woman brings to the movement.

Sarah is to some of those who live in the bubble of NY, DC and LA as sunlight is to a vampire. They are destroyed and turned to dust in her presence!

Excellent article!!!

Poor Tood
A stroke? What country do you live in again?

"I am a Conservative - and smart enough to know McCain is better than Obama. So what's your point? You won't because McCain isn't?"

No. No you're not. If you are conservative, you believe in conservative principles. You do not "me-too" out of convenience. Did you miss the ENTIRE point of the article?

When you pull the lever for McCain, you are voting FOR the complete opposite of conservatism. You are voting FOR it. No, "I'm voting against Obama." So am I, but I am going to vote FOR conservative principles. If Obama wins (which he will, thanks to people like you regurgitating the same tired arguements for the last 12 years) it will be YOUR fault. And if you vote for McCain and end up getting socialism, then you deserved it, because you voted FOR it.

If you are going to call yourself a conservative, you might want to actually start living it. Your mentality is an enemy to conservatism. You are a "me-too" Republican.

Newsflash, numbnuts, there will ALWAYS be a democrat running against a Republican. And the democrat will ALWAYS be the "worse alternative." And it will ALWAYS be the most leftist EVER!! This was the argument 4 years ago. This was the argument 8 years ago. And we fell for it. And what did we get? Socialism anyway.

This time I will not be voting FOR it. You can if you want. But when you get it. You can STFU and enjoy it.

You "stroke" (whatever the hell that is.)

Toad
So when do you propose we make that stand and actually demand that the Republican party return to it's conservative roots? Not this time? You said that last time, too. And the time before that. And the time before that.

When, Toad? When is a convenient time to stop the socialism and destruction of our country? 2012, Toad? How about 2016? Do you expect that there will not be a democratic opponent in these years? Do you not expect them to be the most leftist EVA!?!!?! then? Huh, Toad? When do you plan to stop holding your nose and actually BE a conservative and demand the same from your leaders?

Sorry, Toad, I do not "negotiate" with terrorists. If the GOP really wanted to win, they knew what to do, we have been telling them for over 12 years. The blood is on their hands now.

ACORN, Jerabaub? ACORN???
"And even a blind squirrel stumbles upon an acorn occasionally."

Now I don't care who you are, that right there is funny.

Vindex
I am voting McCain. You are voting Obama.

I believe in Reagan's 11th Commandment "thou shall not speak ill of another Republican".

I will not now. I will vote for the man who is the only one running who won't confuse the man with the office. That man is John McCain.

I would rather have seen a stronger Conservative running. But I will not abandon my Party because of it.

McCain/Palin '08

Todd reply #12
I flagged your reply as 'Offensive'
It wasn't offensive to me, but to all the left leaning "I think I'm a conservative" types your post might leave a bruise...Good Job

Todd
I'm voting for Obama, huh? Really? Obama is going to win because of YOU.

But, it's my fault because I will not submit to your terrorism, right?

I don't think I have anything more to say to you. You are about as braindead as the liberals and Obamamaniacs around here.

Todd
Just one last thing. No that I expect you to get it as dense as you have proven yourself to be, but others might be interested in seeing clearly your hypocrisy.

You say:
"I believe in Reagan's 11th Commandment "thou shall not speak ill of another Republican".

Really? Peggy Noonan, Colin Powell, etc... These people are Republicans.

Looking at your comments above, I can clearly see you speaking ill of them.

And you called me a 'stroke', afterall. But then, I guess the way around the 11th commandment for those not falling in line and voting for your big government liberal republican, is to simply call them "liberals." How convenient.

Vindex
Here's what you need to do. Get a pedicure in-room and turn on Michael Morroes latest box-office smash......can't remember it went to DVD too quickly.....then maybe "W" (another flop) and a good book on the KGB and Soviet disinformation during the Carter years.

Maybe you can start at the part in the book where Carter goes to a summit with Brezhnev, comes home, then Brezhnev invades Afghanistan leaving Carter to say "I can't believe he (Brezhnev) lied to me!".

You know a little about lieing, don't you?

Palin: Conservative? Yes
A Leader? No.
Sorry Palin may well depict the conservative American Woman but she is not ready for a prime time leadership role in the US government.

Vindex
The bell is ringing! Back to class! Let your lib profs pollute your mind some more!

And if you are not a messenger of disinformation, then you need to read some more books and learn why Party loyalty is bigger than the man.

Because in the end, anything we have is better than the left.

Todd
"You know a little about lieing, don't you?"

Nope. Can't says I do.

I don't watch leftist propaganda, so I will just have to take your word for it that these were educational to you somehow.

Eleanor the Lib
Not really interested in the liberal take on Governor Palin. Obama has no qualifications, he's deceitful, thuggish and completely lacking in personal accountability, then tries to use his skin color to hide behind and accuses anyone who notices of being racist, ignorant or ugly. He's the worst candidate I've ever seen on a major party ticket and what color he is has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. MORONS.

Vindex
So how is Michael Moore, your hero?

Todd
Let's see:

1. Keep calling me a liberal, instead of actually addressing a single thing I have said.

2. Tell me "party loyalty" is more important than principles.

And you DON'T see how this article was directed at you?

Keep it up, now you are making me laugh.

And guess what? You are still going to get your asses handed to you for your sins. Unfortunately, the entire country will also have to suffer.

In re: Tony and "me too"
only stupid, brainwashed people would think there are only two possible solutions to any problem and your tactics remind me of the ones the Moonies used to use who lived down the street from me, years ago. That's why our country is a mess and you are as much to blame as anyone, imo.

Romney was the best candidate I've ever seen, much better than Reagan, whose War on Drugs led to high crime and big profits for drug dealers, who also had harder drugs to offer, not to mention guns. Our country has never been the same and you used that as an excuse to violate Constitutional Rights, just like the Dems are finding excuses to violate ours now. Where to turn? I have to pick individuals, the parties are total crap.

In re: Libertarians
I agree with them on legalizing marijuana, but there are other issues I find too extreme for my taste.

Great article, Tony...
and spot on...I stopped reading Parker's diatribes against Palin...she outwore her welcome on my computer. I may not agree with everything McCain believes (which I don't), but I agree enough with him that he has earned my vote. I want a stronger America, I want to win the war in Iraq and leave the people stronger there to fight off Iran's threat (and yes, I have family members who have served in Iraq multiple tours), I want judges appointed to the Supreme Court and to the federal bench who want to uphold and interpret the Constitution instead of making laws. The security of America and the Constitution beat out any other differences I may have with McCain. Like I said, he EARNED my vote!

AmericanWoman
Unfortunately the Libertarians have become taken over by Anarchists, atheists, and bohemians. It's a difficult party for a conservative to like right now, too.

Most of the people I met at the one meeting I tried to attend were people I would generally consider communists and Utopian Idealists.

Not my cup of tea, regardless of what brain-dead above thinks because he can't come up with a valid rebuttal anymore.

Time for them to go
Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Chris Buckley, David Frum and Kathleen Parker, just move on.org, would you? Time for the GOP to start reshaping the party. Palin is the first salvo.

AmericanWoman
If you can't agree with someone, and no one expects you to, can you make your statement without calling others names like morons.
It's closed minded people like you that respond with unintelligent, thoughtless, disrespectful, name-calling replies.
If you reread my take on Palin, there was no disrespect for your candidate in what I said.
You however lash out with all kinds of garbage to anyone who makes a simple statement that you don't agree with.

And to keev... re: Palin
keev wrote;

"Sarah is to some of those who live in the bubble of NY, DC and LA as sunlight is to a vampire. They are destroyed and turned to dust in her presence!"

They can't stand her, because her shining example exposes them as frauds. It's about time someone did. That was a great move by McCain, touche! lol

Eleanor...
you just did to me what you accused me of, anything else?

This relentless bashing of Palin as being unqualified is moronic coming from people who are voting for someone as President who has even less qualifications than she does. If you are so smart, you'd realize she comes in with the same resume as Clinton, Bush and Reagan. HELLO???

Sick of it, it's totally sexist and deceitful. My saying that is not garbage, you acting like that is.

You aren't a Republican. Reagan would be dissappointed in you. I am. We all are.

Because the 11th Commandment he so vociferously obeyed is being violated, and trampled on, by you.

I will not run out on my Party, ever. This is the Party of Lincoln, TR, Silent Cal, Ike, Nixon, and Reagan. A very different group of personalities, to be sure. All grasped the greatness they had in their reach - excepting one.

Only two-termers qualify; the history on Bush is not written yet and I will decline at this time to include him in the group. His out of control spending will be a problem for me.

McCain/Palin '08

Brian R "Left our the name"
"Left out the name
of the biggest "me-too conservative"."

Isn't it a shame. For the first time in my life; I truly feel we're forced to select from the lesser of two evils' rather than a candidate I can be overtly proud of.

McCain demonstrates no allegiance to the written law where it conflicts with his liberal propensities.

Placing Palin on the ticket has infused this old misanthrope with new hope.

Todd
"I will not run out on my Party, ever."

Ever, Toad? Even if they run Obama as a republican in 2012?

I don't think it is me that Reagan would be disappointed in, Toad. He would be disappointed in what his party has become. In fact, he was disappointed in what his party had become when he decided to run against the rockefellar Republicans.

You abuse Reagan's name. I have absolutely NO doubt in my mind that you are either too young to remember that time in history, or you voted for Ford in the primaries and called Reagan a nutjob like most of the "party loyalists" did at that time because he wasn't playing along.

I bet you are probably just too young to have actually been there to see what the party did to Reagan.

But, go ahead, keep pretending that you live in the same world as Reagan.

All these pundits have some
sort of an agenda..Tony is right on the money..We must not forget the big picture however and that is to stop these circular firing squads we republicans are so good at and concentrate on keeping this commie obama out of the WH.

It does no good to bad-mouth Mccain if he doesn't fit exactly into a box labled "true conservative" according to someone's definition.

The other guy is a flat out communist IMO, his words describe him, his associations describe him and he hasn't told the truth since he started running.

His freudian slips tell us much, but he sideslips them like he's teflon thanks to the lousy media.

It is a testament to Mccain that he is still this close given the MSM where most of the country gets it's "news".

The only way we can get our country back is to come together like the patriots we are, elect McCain/Palin and throw these miserable SOB's like pelosi, reid, franks, dodd etc ALL out on their ears. Send them the loudest message we can. FIRE them all!

If we do not, this republic is lost and you all know it.

What about
if they decide that they lost this election because they simply weren't liberal 'enough' with McCain? What if they try to outdo Obama in 2012 with someone even more liberal because they think that is what the country wants and they simply want to hang on to power?

Will you hang on to your party, then, Toad?

Don't bother answering, I already know. You've all but said it a hundred times in this thread already.

Whose side?
"Whose side are you on, comrade?" Palin is making exactly the points that need to be made. Quibbling about style is silly.

Me-Too Conservatives
Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Chris Buckley, David Frum and Kathleen Parker - Other than snob appeal, and scampering to be on the winning side (probably),what is their point?

Toad
"You aren't a Republican. Reagan would be dissappointed in you. I am. We all are."

Who's "we", toad? Are you invoking some imaginary posse, toad? Isn't it usually the liberals that talk like this?

Hmm... you recommend leftist propaganda (and from your list, it appears you have watched quite a few of them) to me with nearly a timestamp to a particular part you want me to see, you keep asking about the well-being of Michael Moore....

If it sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck... well, I think "we" know the rest.

Seawolf
"It does no good to bad-mouth Mccain if he doesn't fit exactly into a box labled "true conservative" according to someone's definition."

I don't think the problem is that McCain "doesn't fit exactly into a box labled "true conservative" according to someone's definition."

I think the problem is that he fits perfectly into a box labeled "socialist." I think most people have a hard time thinking of something him and Obama actually disagree about beyond using different words for the same things.

I really doubt you would be witnessing a conservative revolt over just trivial differences.

Remember, you too called him a socialist in 2000. In fact, you all called him one in the primaries this time when you thought it wouldn't be him. So what changed, other than YOUR adherence to principles?

Vinny-dinny
You act like McCain is the second coming of Nelson Rockefeller for crissakes.

Look at his record, take a deep breath, and relax. He will cut spending - never mind the hyperbole of a campaign.

Back to his record, it ain't perfect, but it's a whole hell of lot better than Obama.

Before you rush to the barricades --

It isn't necessarily over. The polls are tightening.

Is McCain my guy .. not really, but I would rather fight his policies than fight and hide from Obama's goon squads.

Make no mistake - the damage done by an Obama Administration will take generations to undo. I am not interested in subjecting my kids to post-Apocalyptic socialist "worker's paradise".

The conservative movement is in a shambles because republicans in Congress started acting like democrats. We must clean house and rebuild. Mr. Blankley has a pretty good bead on what needs doing. Doing those things will be much easier to do that if we aren't at the barricades.

Republican wealth-redistribution
Redistribution of wealth" is a feature of modern day Republicanism.

John McCain wants to redistribute wealth from renters, people with no mortgages, people not in over their heads in their homes to people who, simply, bought way too much home. This wealth-redistribution project costs $300 billion for starters.

The entire War in Iraq has cost $600 billion, with the Republicans financing the war with tax cuts and a mountain of debt.

Pork barrel projects skyrocketed under Republican DC leadership from 3,000 to 14,000 projects a year during those glorious spending years of 2001-2006. Pork-barrel spending is a redistribution of wealth from those with no political connections to those that do. Cost, about $30 billion a year.

Just because the Republicans don't talk about wealth-redistribution, doesn't proclude them from a having a more feverish desire than the Democrats in doing it.

another Republican wealth-redistribution
plan;

Farm subsidies - Republicans have pushed ethanol mandates, cotton, sugar, corn, wheat and soybean subsidies to famers in the American heartland. This is a wealth-redistribution scheme from the American east and west coasts to America's heartland, with America's heartland values.

The Day Will Come
Now we're seeing what some of us have long suspected, the turncoat "republicans", who've quietly sold us out for so many years.

These summer "patriots" are with you. . . until things go bad. Then as you go into battle and turn to lead the charge, you see their backsides as they run away. The GOP has been infested with many of them all along.

No doubt they've been the vermin advising our rulers to go soft on terrorism in order not to offend the enemies, and the attendees at D.C. cocktail parties.

The Peggy Noonans, the David Brooks and the other Scott McClellans of the GOP should be hanged from taller lampposts on the day true Americans have to wage real revolution to retake America from the communists coming to power next year.

They shouldn't be given mercy either. No long drop for these traitors. Rather, they should be slowly pulled up to dangle and suffer much longer.

AmericanWoman
If you reread what I wrote I did not call you any names.
There is a difference in pointing out your style of opinion blogging as opposed to your personal self.
But you already knew that.

Ok Toad
I really do have better things to do now. Vote for the socialist if you want while calling yourself a republican and everyone else holding to their principles liberals. And have fun selling out your principles and the country.

Not that you needed my approval, when you've got 'party loyalty' and a supposed legion of "we's"

You and I probably do agree on one important thing, though: I provide no defense to these people endorsing Obama, since I think that decision is stupid. But, I expected it to happen with many of the die-hard neocons. They don't really have any principles at all, they simply want to retain power, direct American foreign policy, corporate favoritism, globalism, and a piece of the taxpayers money. These same people switch parties every time a different party wins. I just feel sad for you that you just keep trusting these people in the first place.

One thing you can look forward to, is that the rats will jump the ship when Obama wins and maybe the conservatives can get back in and rebuild the party. I don't have to wish for this to happen, it's just what they do. Hopefully we can lock them out this time.

Good day to you.

Narrow Minded Opinions Abound
I've spent time at Tonwhall and at HuffingtonPost. I think what is wrong with this country is instead of saying that we're all complicit in the problems of the day and coming together as humans to solve our problems, we point the finger at the other guy and duck out of any real problem-solving. It is safer to say the other guy will make more mistakes than to look at the mistakes we've already made.

Republican Conservatism has given us an endless war, massive deficits, corrupted capitalism and then open sneering when the middle class watches itself disappear into the hands of the few sly enough to get while the gettin' was good. This is not a Democrat problem, nor is it a Republican problem, it is AMERICA'S PROBLEM. We are ALL responsible. Enough with the narrow-minded nonsense spewed in this article!

Continue the ignorance and divisiveness and there will not be an America left over which to quarrel like the children we prove ourselves to be with every posting.

Peggy Moron....
Maybe what Noonan is upset about is that Obama is rerunning her meaningless Morning in America campaign. Did she expect residuals?

Noonan's Sweet Nothings
I think Miz Peggy has been pallin' around with Parker too long. They are on the same page and both wrong. In fact, disgusting.

There was a time I appreciated her way with words, especially some of Pres.Reagan's speeches. Her words and his oratory were wonderful. Especially the Challenger speech.

I doubt Pres.Reagan would agree with her words today. Surely, she is suffering some dementia. I am sorry for her malady, but it happens to the best of us.

2012
Palin/Jindal 2012! Regardless of how this election turns out nobody can honestly argue the current crop of "first tier" Republicans is not either out to lunch or just flat out incompetent. McCain's great favor to us may just be opening the door for the new kids. I'd hate to be run out of town by a bunch of punks who don't know who the maitre'd's are at the top drawer Georgetown restaurants - but that's who is coming to power SOON! People like Noonan better get their fill at the trough now because their shelf life is about 24 months max. I can't wait...

I've never quite understood these labels,

It's Conservative, period!
...with a very simple definition, and Conservatives are not confused by the meaning.

Todd
That's your wise theory, Todd? That's your comeback to everything I have said? I mean, I must be a liberal! Why, I don't agree to your big government, corporate welfare, or to your seeing such weakness in the bravery and courage of our young men and women of the armed forces and the population at large that Mooslem boogie men will be marching down my street, unopposed lopping off heads and converting people to Islam on Januray 20,2009! Why, I simply must be a liberal! Nobody ACTUALLY believes in conservative principles, I mean, not really. So I must be a liberal! Yeah, that's it.

Sure, Todd, I'm the one looking desperate here. You petty efforts at attacking me with your nauseatingly repetitive charges of being a liberal despite ANY evidence of that in anything I have said (and an abundance in the things YOU have said) as if you have absolutely nothing else is simply pathetic.

You should have just stopped Todd. You're simply not smart enough or confident in your principles to actually challenge a real-live conservative.

When one is secure in their principles, this attack is very ineffective. See, I really don't give a shat what people like you think I am. A man is measured by his actions. Just how do you think you measure up right now?

I bet your breath stinks when you say liberal, doesn't it Todd?

"Truth is, no Republican I have met is as right wing as you are acting. You are acting right of Goldwater."

Perhaps you should find some better and actual *conservative* friends to hang around with, Todd. I am pretty sure that I just addressed your poor judgement of character up above.

Me-Too Conservative?
You can turn that around and say that those, like yourself Blankley, that support the Republican party of George W. Bush are "Me-Too Conservatives". How is Bush or McCain philosophically different from any Democrat? They aren't.

My thoughts exactly!
Jerseyvet #55 - thanks for expressing them so well!

A good column, Mr. Blankley. I tried to read this on Real Clear Politics and the hateful comments quickly drove me away. At least even the dissenters on TownHall are a bit more civil in their discourse.

I have a REAL problem with elitists looking down their noses on everyday Americans. Charles Gibson / John Kerry / Tom Brokaw / Barack Obama are a few names that immediately come to mind. I'll take 1 Sarah Palin or Joe the Plumber over 100 of any of the above 'elitists' any day of the week!

For EVERY person here considering voting for Obama I beg you to give SERIOUS thought as to the direction of our country if he is elected. America as we once knew it will be gone - perhaps forever. We KNOW John McCain loves America and we do NOT know that about Barack Obama. Please Please Please think long and hard before pulling the lever (or marking the ballot)

How sad that two of our most
revered conservatives have sons who have chosen to distance themselves from their fathers and their beliefs. Thankfully we have Bill's nephew, Brent Bozell, to carry on his uncle's conservative message.

"America as we once knew it will be gone - perhaps forever."

Please spare us the drama. People said the same thing when Bubba got elected.

True, then vote Democrat. Under Bubba's reign the stock market tripled, mostly, because the sound "tax and spend" policies of the 90's was eventually going to bring the deficit to zero.

Under George Bush and the Republican Congress' 'reign of error' the deficit has more than doubled. The stock market has lost 20% due to the Republican mantra of cut taxes and spend even more.

Don't forget, the entire war in Iraq has been financed by sending IOU's to China, UAE, Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia to name a few. This is wealth-redistribtion from Americans to foreigners, plain and simple. And you can thank the Republicans for this.

Too many of our phony Conservatives say they are willing to stay on in Iraq for 100 years, so long as the entire cost is put on the national credit card, and they get to hang onto their precious tax cut.

Right on Tony -
Absolutely correct

God Bless Sarah Palin
"...We will be engaged in a struggle to the political death for the soul of the country..."

We are indeed right now fighting for the soul of this nation. Sarah Palin represents everything that the leftist elitists snobs HATE - she is a pro-gun, pro-life, pro-family, pro-military, God-fearing, red-blooded American patriot.

Conservatism is alive and well. It just hasn't been articulated and championed recently (Bush II namely). Sarah Palin is the voice of true conservatism and will be leading the conservative clarion call to reclaim this country from the socialists.

McCain/Palin '08

Eleanor - Palin is a leader
Eleanor,

One of the critical measurements of a leader is their ability to get people to follow them particularly when the people resist the direction the leader wants to go.

Palin's success with the Alaskin Oil Companies,
and Republican party clearly shows she can get people to follow here even when they may disagree with her.

A woman who can get "Good Old Boys" men's Club to follow her lead is refreshing.

Women everywhere should celebrate Sarah Palin's successes.

Stop and think for a moment please
To those who believe that there is no difference between Obama or McCain:

Then why doesn't moveon.org, dailykos, huffpost et al. just tell everyone: "Hey there's really not a dime's difference between Obama or McCain so just vote for either one!"

My oldest sister is a socialist/Obamabot and she exclaimed during the primaries that "Hillary is too slick and conservative for me." Say what!?!?!?

For her, McCain and especially Palin, are WAY too conservative. Yes, there IS a difference between the two party candidates.

So please, if you're thinking of voting third party, just remember, you're voting for someone who cannot win in November and by doing so, you are allowing a marxist to get into the WH.

As Rush says, this country simply cannot afford Obama. And I agree with Rush when he said that win or lose, conservatism will be rebuilt in this country.

Let's rebuild conservatism with McCain in the WH.

Mr. Blankley
1. Grassroots cannot provide the foundation for an ideological movement. Only the intellectuals can do that. It takes the intellectuals to establish doctrine from which politicians derive their agenda. Fact. The masses cannot govern effectively on their own (but they can kill Socrates). That is because they are not very intelligent and informed as a group. As a group, they are average. (Just try to dispute that). You expect salvation from whooping & hollering masses who don't even know that Palin's actions vis-a-vis oil companies and Alaskans constitute socialism? What are you thinking? This brings us to point #2.

2. You exist in a Palin bubble of delusion. Every conservative outside of the Palin bubble of delusion, and there are a lot of us, can clearly see that Palin is not actually conservative. She is intellectually disintegrated. She has no coherent worldview, only the whim of the moment, which she cannot evaluate by any consistent system of thought, which means that she is a de facto statist.

You think that elitism is the issue here. Try to understand what the "elitists," or intellectuals as everyone outside of the bubble of delusion calls them, think of you. You appear to be emotional and animal-like. You have rallied to Palin for no rational reason whatsoever. You have no objective evidence to support your belief that Palin is in fact politically conservative. On what basis do you declare Palin to be a conservative? You used feel-good but irrelevant information such as retard-birthing and moose-hunting to form your opinion. However, everyone outside of the Palin bubble of delusion can clearly see that people can voluntarily give birth to retards or hunt moose yet enact socialist policies. They can also clearly see that she is incoherent and that she has enacted socialist policy. The reason you think that she is cognitively capable and conservative is because you exist in a bubble of delusion.

Let us be frank, "Wendy"
These are not "elites". They are, to a man, mildly successful writers. And that, my friends, is the sum total of their achievements. They have held no elected offices. They have neither founded nor run a successful business, periodical, or conservative website. In other words, they are little more than clerks with delusions of adequacy.

If that is the "elite" of the conservative movement, than the movement is indeed poorly served.

Dear deluded Wendy, in addition to her relentless and mindless hatred for Sarah Palin, laughably attempts to preach a version of the "elite" better suited for the vanguard of a communist revolution than for a loose association of ideologically likeminded individualists (which is what conservatism is, as Wendy would realise if she actually were a conservative).

Wendy
We get it. You think there is a Palin bubble, and people are stupid. I think you said it about 5 times in your written babble.

And you actually said "retard-birthing."

Your ignorance and lack of civility is unsettling, and yet I am sure you consider yourself smarter than most.

"Is McCain my guy .. not really, but I would rather fight his policies than fight and hide from Obama's goon squads.

Make no mistake - the damage done by an Obama Administration will take generations to undo. I am not interested in subjecting my kids to post-Apocalyptic socialist "worker's paradise"."
---------------------------------------------
Exactly! Thomas Sowell said as much today. Obama will do irrepairable damage, bringing the U.S.A. to the point of NO RETURN. The writing is on the wall. We can fight McCain. But there will be no fighting Obama. Even now, while he is still merely a candidate, he is assaulting and quieting any and all dissent. Bringing suits against people, truth squads, harrassment, threats, and worse. People can't even ask Obama a question he doesn't approve of without being exposed and publicly shredded.

Do you think this will get better after America elects Obama? No. It will get much, much worse. In a dramatically short time frame.

Obama doesn't take criticism well. There will be no reasoning with this madman. McCain is only a vote to stop Obama and a socialistic/marxists take over. America will still be here for us to fight for. To revamp. To regroup. That will not be the case if Obama is elected.
