Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In the past 30 years or so, since presidential conventions no longer actually have decided the nominees, their usual purpose has been to focus and project a positive image of the already chosen candidate (and, of course, disparage the opponent). But last week in St. Paul, Minn., the GOP convention was different. It not only enhanced but also -- at least for the moment -- reversed-fielded the image of the Republican ticket.

In the aftermath of that reversal, the entire presidential contest has been upended. It also hastened (or perhaps even made possible at all) the change of the human image of the GOP from Bush/Cheney to McCain/Palin.

Until last week, Sen. McCain was running as the boring candidate of experience and was unable to substantially replace Bush as the image of the party. With Bush having a 70 percent negative image, he not only was dragging down McCain but also constituted a drowning weight on the buoyancy of Republican candidates at the federal, state and local levels.

But with the addition of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to the ticket, suddenly and spontaneously, McCain the reformer, McCain the maverick stopped being a GOP talking point and became incarnate. It is not only that the Alaska governor is a genuine reformer but also that by every aspect of her being, she is fresh, different, recognizably normal, and thus, the un-Washingtonian. The power of her image has supercharged McCain's image.

We see the first effects of McCain/Palin replacing Bush/Cheney in Monday's USA Today/Gallup Poll, in which 48 percent say they're Democrats or lean to the Democratic Party; 47 percent say they're Republicans or lean to the GOP. That merely 1-point party gap -- the strongest position for Republicans since Bush's second inaugural, at the beginning of 2005 -- had been in double digits only a few weeks ago. Moreover, voters -- by only 48-45 percent -- support the Democratic candidate in their congressional districts, the Democratic Party's narrowest advantage this year. If these numbers hold -- and it is a big if -- Republicans may well lose far fewer seats in the House and Senate in November.

Moreover, in an act of political alchemy, McCain's selection of the nationally inexperienced Gov. Palin only underscored Sen. Obama's own national inexperience. Worse for Obama, Gov. Palin's presence has sucked the oxygen out of Sen. Biden's public statements -- forcing presidential candidate Obama into the unthinkable: He himself must go on the attack against McCain's vice presidential junior partner. Worst of all for Obama, his campaign of a fresh face with new ideas is falling victim to a newer face with newer ideas.

As I predicted in a Feb. 28, 2007, column:

"What does it mean to be a 'fresh face' in a 12-month primary campaign in an Interneted, 24-7 news cycle environment? This, of course, must be a question that Sen. Barack Obama and his people are puzzling over now. He will be as familiar as an old shoe to Democratic Party primary voters by next January (2008) and February (2008). He may still be appealing next year (2008), but he will no longer be fresh.

" A new idea put forward a year before primary voting risks not only providing more than sufficient time for an opponent's research team to find and publicize the flaws in the idea but also runs the risk of becoming stale and, most dangerously, of letting events overtake the proposal.

"Thus is lost one of the great advantages of challengers -- that their ideas are fresh, appealing and plausible, but not public long enough to be measured by events and considered judgment -- which is the inevitable plight of incumbents and their party successors.

"One of the other imponderable challenges to both fresh faces and well-known veteran candidates is how to manage the life expectancy of clever phrases and slogans and even of endearing personality quirks and styles of speech or manner.

"These things tend to get old.

"I suspect that the insatiable public maw of freshness-hunger will prove a vast challenge to the wordsmith and media shops of all the campaigns.

"Perhaps this will be the election cycle of the late entries."

And that is exactly what Obama is being forced to deal with. First his startling and lofty rhetoric grew stale from overuse. And now his once engaging (for some) ideas are being overtaken by events. His call for quick retreat from Iraq, overtaken by the surge and the smell of victory, has forced him to reverse field and admit the surge has been an unexpected (by him) success. Then the declining economy forced him this week to back away from his soak-the-rich tax increases for fear of further damaging the economy.

Of course, the perils of Pauline still may threaten Gov. Palin, and two months is time enough for many more strange twists. But one week on from the Republican convention, it is fair to say that never in modern history has a presidential ticket benefited so much from its convention. And never have the hopes and energy of a moribund party risen so quickly or so high.

WOW ! " $10 MILLION raised in the 23 hours "

Even the islamist 'Money Bags (AKA illegal donors)' are afraid of Sarah Palin !

It is obvious why islamists want a muslim US President. It is the other supporters of the 'annointed one' that I don't understand.
~~~
Here's a thought to infuriate them even more...
How about a video of Sarah kissing a pig. A pig that has a 'Miss America style' sash that says, "Winston".
O.K. maybe I should break this down for you lefties... 'Animal Farm', ' Some are more equal...' ? "Winston" the pig... Get it ?
Anyway the islamists would be filled with hatred.
The lefties would be filled with hatred.
And, now, the pig would have some humorously applied lipstick, and, if I were the pig, I would love it !
Sadly, my assigned role is to be the Rat,
The power of her image
Mr. Blankley writes, "The power of her image has supercharged McCain's image." And " . . . never have the hopes and energy of a moribund party risen so quickly or so high."
Quite so. The party needed someone to root for, and they've found her. So from here on it, it's simple: If Palin can keep McCain swept under the rug 'til election day, game on. If people, and conservatives especially, remember who's on the top of the ticket, game over.
GO, SARAH!!!
DC REPUBS BEWARE
The answer is to get rid of the wash-out repubs who have sold out and lost their backbone and connection to normal life, and replace them with everyday people with conservative values. Why did you go to Wash DC? If you lost touch, get rid of you staff and hire a couple of people who aren't going tell you how great you are, but tell you to get it in gear and mix it up. If not, go home because you are a waste of space.
Enough of us were planning to vote for McCain to put him in the Whitehouse, regardless of who he picked. So don't be sad on that account.
I'm sad on two accounts
1) that a VP candidate is the only thing
bringing life to a party
2) that anyone would consider voting for the
Republicans after the last 8 disastrous years
with Bush and the growing concern about what
Reaganomics is doing to our country.
Are we really that stupid as a nation?
Official Democrat website: Palin pick 'lipstick on a pig'
Posting with photograph of dolled-up swine made before Obama's controversial remarks
The official website of the Democratic Party has a blog posting entitled, "McCain's Selection of Palin is Lipstick on a Pig," illustrated by an altered photograph of a pig with makeup, designer glasses and pearls.
"Palin is a red herring, lipstick on the Republican pig to distract Americans from the real issue that under the leadership of the Republicans the last 8 years, our country is falling apart," writes the blogger, Elizabeth Berry, a self-described 49-year-old "progressive" from Texas.
How many people vote in Virginia and New Hampshire?
Re: Mary Jo
It's illegal to vote more than once in an election. However, that has never stopped the Democrats. Heck, they even take political contributions from foreign powers hostile to the country. Suffice it to say that ethics aren't the Democratic Party's strong suit. And when Democrats start talking about ethics they are either accusing somebody of something or preparing to steal a lot of money.
Perils of Pauline at the Polls?
Is this a potential peril on election day?
Is it still one person = one vote or is it number of residences = number of votes?
Can a person register where ever he lives and vote absentee in several locations?
Can he then vote at the polls on election day?
I live in a red state where many blue staters have moved and go back to visit home a month or so before elections and liberal ex residents come to visit a month or so before elections.
Could they vote absentee in one or more states and then vote at the polls? Would that be legal?
How would we know?
Lipstick on a pig?
Good metaphor-- VERY bad timing!
Once again, the 'Crats are running scared when this should be easy for them. Presidente Jorge has stunk it up terribly, but they NEVER seem to get the culture war thing [see arugula, wind surfing after publicly badmouthing his country (Cohen-Kerry), lack of wrath if his wife were raped (Dutaxus)]... they remain tone-deaf because they fundamentally look down on Middle America and think that guns, patriotism and religion are silly.
The left's "religion" is their desire to use their "superior intellect" to direct our lives for us. Example: Shrillary simply did not get the drivers' license thing in her own blue state of New York where 75% vehemently opposed giving ILLEGALS licenses-- because they KNEW that it was REALLY a scheme to let them vote.
Barack is an elitist... while I agree with a few things he says (even a blind hog occasionally stumbles upon an acorn), I see why he makes Peoria anxious... and ironically, Peoria is RIGHT to be angst-ridden about what he would REALLY seek to do with YOUR $.
As Keith Olbermouth and Chris Matthews screech louder still, Middle America is once again moved more by Rush, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and the great Lou Dobbs who better relate to them. When the left and the myopic miscreant employer crowd get enough ILLEGALS here voting, that will change, and America will be lost forever-- enjoy it while it lasts.
This is the most important issue to America TODAY.
We will NEVER know who this man is from the press.
They are working to elect this man.
Sarah has been in this race for ONE WEEK and we KNOW MORE ABOUT HER AND HER FAMILY, HER RELIGION, HER LIFE!
Than we know about Obama who has been running for President now going on 10,000 years it seems like.
Why will the press go after Sarah's persoan life and sheild Obama and his family life as they are doing?
Why is the press going after Sarah's Religion and Obama's is off-limits?
Its quite obvious the press is owned by the Obama Campaign.
Every question any of you have about Sarah, ask that same question about Obama and see where it goes.
We have an outright cover-up going on in the Corporation Owned Media to shield Obama from any information as to who he really is, to go after Sarah.
Lets ask the press to ask Obama the same questions and about the same topics as they ask Sarah.
Not gonna happen even if we ask.
Not poking fun at someone in a wheelchair,but it is funny because Biden's foot is still firmly implanted in his mouth.
As a "rampaging liberal", I know the difference between receiving a fair amount of federal assistance and loading up the truck with pork. Alaska is still #1 when it comes to the amount of federal spending they receive per person.
Now, I understand that greed is a necessary value to be a conservative, so I shouldn't be surprised that you like that Palin received, and did not refuse, all the money that she got. But, she had officials from Alaska actually go to DC to ask for money (In February, Palin's office sent Sen. Stevens a 70-page memo outlining almost $200 million worth of new funding requests for Alaska.)
...she wasn't just there with her hand out, she was demanding the money.
Hey, look, I understand that you want to vote for McCain, so you're going to hang on to any tiny good thing about him and Palin, and you're going to spin any negative things to make them look positive... but keep that lunacy to yourself.
Now what exactly is in this very old adage "lipstick on a pig" is there to cheer about so wildly as his audience did?
Lets put it in the context of the conversation of today all over America, and the only subject Obama speaks about.
I think its about the subject of winning the Presidency, wouldn't you agree?
This sort of distortion for what is really going on with Sarah and the Media is an outright line of BS.
She has not been off limits at all.
She has been the center of the news since her acceptance speech and has received more print and talk from the Media, the Democrats, the Republicans and the World Press than Elvis did in a year.
You dare call that "off-limits"?
You think Sarah is afraid of speaking her mind when you decided to make that dishonest statement.
One thing I will tell you and all the other moveon.org types, Sarah has no fear of you.
Sarah is smarter than you, and she will keep control over the media events, and is smart of her to do.
I am happy she will control the media and not give the wolves the time of day Until she is ready and decides to make an appearance.
A strong woman and you are one that has under estimated this little lady.
Just like all the others she whipped to gain the position she is now in.
I wasn't really sure of who you are until now.
Your post allowed me to see you much clearer than I have been able to see you in the past.
But she can't play the aggrieved victim forever.
At some point, she is going to have to deal with what SHOULD ALWAYS be tough questions from media...where she won't have a teleprompter.
ts:
The way you chose to word this tells me where you really stand.
"play the aggrieved victim"
Let me see where you came to such a judgment of her that she is playing.
Acting "the aggrieved victim"
Where has this happened?
That choice of words tells me more about you than anything you can say about Sarah.
I have yet to see an actor in Sarah.
I have yet to see her playing games.
Where EXACTLY did you see it?
Explain it for me, cause I have been paying very close attention and if she has "played" an "aggrieved victim" like a soap opera actress, I have missed it.
Watch you language, it shows more about you than it does Sarah
"Do you know what 2 Democrats, in this election, voted for the Bridge-to-Nowhere (read pork)?"
But, Obama and Biden voted AGAINST HR 3058 that wanted to demand that the money be used for the bridge:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/109/senate/1/vo tes/263/
So, Obama did in fact vote against the bridge... thanks for bringing it up.
syler - the lib troll du jour
I enjoy any looney lib who posts on Town Hall. Their silly remarks are so much fun to rebut - it is like shooting fish in a barrel.
The ironic thing about Obama and the piggie lipstick comment is that HE has undergone a complete makeover - a head to toe facelift - in an attempt to hide his true, far-left persona. His voting record (when he actually votes) says it all. He is the MOST liberal voting member of the US Senate, and Uncle Joe is #3 in that regard. For the next 50 days, Obama must keep the spotlight on McCain and Palin, in a desperate attempt to keep his own past hidden. If it were not for a fully complicit MSM, Obama would be trailing in the polls by 20 to 30 points by now.
"...it is a Govenors job to bring federal money to her state and apparently she was very good at it. I wish my governor was as good at it."
Let me get this straight... you want every governor to get as much excess pork as Palin got? Even as a liberal, I do not condone excess pork... but as a conservative, you do?!
That's fitting... conservatives have change their platform before to fit the current candidate.
Divorce used to be a big issue with the Religious Right until Reagan became the nominee. And divorce still can't come back, especially since McCain not only divorced his wife, but he cheated on her.
ex-Wyomingite
"we have the power to forgive Governor Palin for political sins on her part, though we've yet to find any."
So, you don't think that the fact that she took so much pork from taxpayers is a "political sin"?
You don' think that her raising of windfall taxes on oil companies is a "political sin"?
How hypocritically blind you are.
Syler
Keep trying. I will not even attempt to rebut the same old talking points except to say it is a Govenors job to bring federal money to her state and apparently she was very good at it. I wish my governor was as good at it.
No matter what you do or say from here on in the chosen has been exposed as a lthin-skinned whiny loser. He is toast. Now that it's after Labor Day the American people who are not political junkies are paying attention - and they don't like what they see. It's all over but the crying. Repeat after me: WWWWAAAAAHHHH.
Seeeyya.
Excellent ad Sir. Thank you for your service and for yur sacrifice.
Obama's Ojective
First let me say this is a typically great Tony Blankley column.
The association that is the root of all of Obama's goals and tactics is still his absolute enthrallment with the Saul Alinski methods, goals, and tactics. England is already gone, and America is not very far behind. Sarah represents our possibly last chance to return America to what she was during her time of true greatness. That, ultimately, is why she must be not only defeated, but destroyed by the Socialist/Marxist Left of Obama and George Soros.
As to the liberal troll that likened Conservatives to Socialists, that is a hoot. Imagine a Marxist disparaging others by calling them Socialists. That is truly rich.
Syler
Do you know what 2 Democrats, in this election, voted for the Bridge-to-Nowhere (read pork)? And still have not recanted! Let me inform you - Obama & Biden.
pb, Pistol, Seawolf - hypocrits
If you do some research you'll see that McCain first used the "lipstick on a pig" statement when referring to Clinton's health care plan in Iowa last year:
"I think they put some lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig." -McCain
But, I understand how sensitive you guys are.
Anytime someone asks a tough question you use the old "liberal media" phrase.
Anytime someone questions the war on Iraq, you call them a traitor or a commie.
In fact, anytime someone disagrees with your stances you seem to call them a commie.
What's the matter, afraid to play with the big boys? McCain said it first, deal with it.
Palin = RINO
"It is not only that the Alaska governor is a genuine reformer but also that by every aspect of her being, she is fresh, different, recognizably normal, and thus, the un-Washingtonian."
Reformer? Really?
Palin totally supported the bridge-to-nowhere during her 2006 campaign. She only rejected the bridge-to-nowhere AFTER it became a national joke. But, she still accepted the $200 million dollars in pork, she didn't give it back.
Under Palin, Alsaka receives more pork per person than any other state.
As governor, Palin raised taxes, especially windfall taxes for the oil companies.
Wow, if Obama or Biden had done that the GOP would be screaming about if from every rooftop. But, since it was one of their own... well, it's ok.
DEAR MR. OBAMA II
To Michael of IL: Thank you, sir, for your service and sacrifice on behalf of our nation. I watched your video. The only words I have to offer is thank you. America is a better off thanks to good people like you.
Hey, I have a McCain ad I did that has gone absolutely viral! 2.4 Million in less than two weeks. DEAR MR. OBAMA.
Check it out here:
Just doing my part!
GOP Resurrection?
Ha! I hardly think on election day it's Palin people are going to be thinking about when they make their choice. Lipstick on a pig is indeed apt. This Palin is a typical phony Republican and you conservatives are duped once again by these socialists in sheep's clothing. But that's pretty much what you are yourselves.
Jerseyvet wrote:
"Obama's policies would inevitably lead to a state like Castro's Cuba or Hugo Chavez's Venezuela."
Don't get me wrong...I detest Obama and what he stands for, but, let me ask, off-topic perhaps,
are the citizens of Cuba and Venezuela collectively responsible for their fellow citizens' mortgages like we have just become?
I was prepared to
cut bambi some slack until biden used the lipstick remark. If Sarah had not used it fine, it's an old line, but since she DID, it was a subtle or not so subtle way of calling her a pig..both of these guys are despicible and are wetting themselves in fear of this lady...
Biden better re-read debating 101, this lady is going to show him for the pontificating loud-mouth he is and he'll need a good proctologist when she gets done with him. It won't be lipstick, it'll be prep H.
"Big Foot"
Yet again Oblahma-Bin-Biden Big-Foot-in-Mouth disease. It doesn't matter whether Oblahma meant it or not, it does corroborate his incredibly poor judgement in everything.
I used to think this was going to be a close race...well,no longer. Since Gov.Palin joining the ticket.
The incredibly gullible, one sided and incompetent MSM has almost totally lost any vestiges of credibility they had left in desperately pushing their Marxist hero. Now, evebn they do happen to find true negative facts about Gov.Palin, who is going to believe them ?
At this point it sure looks like a landslide for McCain/Palin in 2008.
Colin--Good Analogy
Congratulations on linking Barack Obama to Huey Long. You're the first one I've read who has made that linkage. It fits. Obama's policies would inevitably lead to a state like Castro's Cuba or Hugo Chavez's Venezuela.
Blankley concedes Palin is the anti-Bush
So even a blind squirrel happens upon an acorn, a nugget of wisdom, at some point.
What does it say about the sad state of the GOP that its current standard-bearer(Bush), and future standard-bearer(McCain), presided over a demoralized party, adrift and in danger of being defeated this fall, only to be rescued by a totally unknown governor from Alaska?
Is she as great as she seems?
Maybe.
We will never know as long as the McCain camp keeps her off-limits, having her make only prepared speeches via a teleprompter and speechwriters.
I understand the need to give her time to get up to speed on foreign and domestic issues, to familiarize herself with McCain's positions.
And I concede many on the left have launched personal attacks on her.
But she can't play the aggrieved victim forever.
At some point, she is going to have to deal with what SHOULD ALWAYS be tough questions from media...where she won't have a teleprompter.
The same holds true for McCain, Obama and Biden.
She is going to possibly be the next vice president of the United States.
Our nation needs to know about her...her positions on issues, her previous record and comments as a public official.
The Obama comment about "lipstick on a pig" was definitely in reference to what he had just previously been discussing...which was McCain's trying to position himself as a change from Bush.
That comment was not out of line.
If mere comments about "lipstick on a pig" are deemed to be offlimits, how in the hell would McCain/Palin deal with real enemies such as Islamists, the Chinese, etc?
Grow up, and grow a pair!
That comment was not out of bounds.
pb
Lipstick on a pig, indeed. Obama hauls it out and steps on it again. He just has no feel whatsoever for the effect of what he says on a large part of America. "typical white person" "bitter....clinging". These quotes gained him nothing but alienated many of us. He has lived 20 years in a world of black liberation theology surrounded by people who hae the same limited views. He should hire the quintisential word impact person to vet every thing he says. I speak of Slick Willy, of course. In the meantime, let's have a few dozen trolls post up here and carefully "explain" the "nuance" of what Obama really said and what he really meant and what was really going through his mind.
THE COMING OBAMA MELTDOWN !
...will be sudden and quick...HISTORIC..the greatest Political fraud in U.S. history
THIS IS WHAT COMES OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION !
HUEY LONG meets AMERICAN IDOL!
Lipstick on a pig!
Obama has hit bottom with that remark. He's not only played out his freshness, he's showing what stuff he is really made of. Sarah can simply smile & charm in response; McCain can smile & growl occasionally. Obama will demolish himself.
IT'S ALL OVER FOR THE FRAUD OBAMA!
As I;ve been saying for months...A HARD LEFT SOCIALIST IS UNELECTABLE IN A CENTER RIGHT COUNTRY...sunlight is the best disinfectant!
We are about to witness one of the great political meltdowns in modern memory...Obama will be desroyed in a DUKAKIS Like LANDSLIDE...15 states or less!
O)bama is the greatest MENACE since HUEY LONG!
Give McCain Credit
I still say a big problem for R's is these know it all negative pundits. It looks to me as if McCain knows what he is doing.
Good article, and you did call it.
Very food observation
"Obama is caught on the horns of a real dilemma. If, as he should, engage McCain then Gov Palin will erode his shaky middle. If, on the other hand, he chooses to engage Gov Palin then he diminishes his presidential image and also will seem to attack middle America."
We are not listening to the Dem's damage
machine pounding on Palin. She has a business but freshly pretty look about her. She does not look nor act like a bra burner. She walks the talk she talks.
Great stroke of genius Mr. McCain.
Don Jones
PoeSpirits.com
Tony, Sarah Palin is
a REAL Middle American. In Alaska she is just Sarah, your neighbor, who also happens to be the governor. Average people -- REAL middle Americans -- relate to Sarah Palin, precisely because she is one of them.
This relationship between Gov Palin and middle America is special and the Obama campaign must attack her carefully, if at all. For what they say disparaging about her they also say about middle America.
Obama is caught on the horns of a real dilemma. If, as he should, engage McCain then Gov Palin will erode his shaky middle. If, on the other hand, he chooses to engage Gov Palin then he diminishes his presidential image and also will seem to attack middle America.
This is going to be delicious. Go get 'em Sarah.
