Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In 1990, former Democratic Speaker of the House Tom Foley advised incoming members of Congress to miss a few floor votes early in their careers. If not, he warned, they might suffer the curse that had befallen 79-year-old, 41-year veteran Rep. Charles E. Bennett of Florida. Although Bennett had won a Silver Star for gallantry in World War II, he then contracted polio and thereafter had to use a cane to get around. Some of his Florida voters thought he might be too frail to serve in Congress. So during his first term, to prove he was not feeble, he left his hospital bed, where he was suffering from pneumonia, so as not to miss a vote.

Soon he was known for this virtue. And he never missed another vote for 40 years. As a result, his career had become a torment -- driving through snowstorms, missing important family moments, and generally disrupting his life. As Foley warned, trying to keep a perfect voting record "is a great sentence of life in prison living in uneasy terror" of missing a vote.

I recount this story of old Washington as a cautionary tale for the benefit of young Sen. Obama. There is a joke going around Washington to the effect that Hillary is the senator from New York who was born in Illinois, while Obama is the senator from Illinois who was born in a manger.

It might seem useful to Obama to run as a saint in this wicked, wicked world. But the trouble with posing as a saint is that one sets oneself up to be judged by exalted saintly standards. And just as not missing even a procedural vote haunted Charles Bennett all the days of his congressional life, so playing the part of a saint will make it politically dangerous for Obama to take those necessary little expedient acts that politicians routinely get away with, but for which aspiring saints get disgraced and banished.

In this regard, at least, Bill Clinton will prove to have been wiser than Obama. Clinton never pretended to be virtuous and thus got away with all manner of ethical breaches. From whom little moral behavior is expected, little will be asked.

But for Obama, already -- and he has not even secured his nomination yet -- three acts of routine political hypocrisy and cynicism threaten to disrupt his self-propelled elevation.

On "Meet the Press" Jan. 22, 2006, Tim Russert and Sen. Obama had the following exchange:

Russert: "When we talked back in November of '04 after your election, I said, 'There's been enormous speculation about your political future. Will you serve your six-year term as United States senator from Illinois?' Obama: 'Absolutely.'"

Obama: "I will serve out my full six-year term. You know, Tim, if you get asked enough, sooner or later you get weary and you start looking for new ways of saying things. But my thinking has not changed."

Russert: "So you will not run for president or vice president in 2008?"

Obama: "I will not."

Oh, dear. Is another routine non-truthing politician "the one we have been waiting for"? It was all very well when Bill Clinton promised to serve out his term as governor and then went back on his word and ran successfully for president. Clinton already was known as a charming liar. But Obama has promised us so much more -- no more business as usual. We can do better. Yes, we can.

Non-truthing is getting to be a habit for the waited-for one. As Sen. McCain has pointed out, Obama promised to use public funding in the general election if the Republican candidate would do so also. Well, McCain has agreed to it, but now Obama wants to back out of the deal. After all, when he made the promise, he didn't have a chance of raising more than the public's $85 million stipend. But now that he can raise $300 million, well, what's a little untruth between the waited-for one and his people? Yes, he can.

What else can he do? He can make a big point that his candidacy is not about race -- which is a good thing. But then he can brag that his will be a "historic" election. We all assume he is not referring to his having lived in Hawaii. No, obviously he means being the first black president. But "it's not about race." Yes, he can.

Obama's wife confesses that her husband has a pretty big ego. Egos are necessary things for workaday politicians. But they get in the way of sainthood. Because, it would seem, his ego is not only bigger than a breadbox but is already bigger than his sense of integrity. And egos don't get smaller (nor integrity larger) after men get elected president.

40 yrs oppression as congressman?
He had 20 timely opportunities to go back home.
What happened to the Gingrich 6 year contract with America pledge, anyway?

A whispering wheezing at the end
Barack Obama also promised Oprah Winfrey he would announce his candidacy for the presidency on her program. He could have just told her she would be one of the first to know. But instead, he said he would announce it on her show but then announced his candidacy in Springfield, Illinois, one of his many attempts to link himself with Abraham Lincoln. But Lincoln would not have approved of Obama.

Obama’s sweeping oratory of “what began as a whisper in Springfield” reminded me of the ending of a fragile life--the wheezing of an infant’s lungs trying to be born and struggle against the doctor murdering him in a partial-birth abortion as his tiny head comes out of his mommy. Obama’s record on this matter is abominable. It’s recorded by Jill Stanek who witnessed infanticide firsthand, and who dealt with Obama’s subterfuge firsthand.

Good ideas died in Springfield too
After posting the above, I heard Obama’s Houston speech, “…the problem that we face in America today is not the lack of good ideas. It’s that Washington has become a place where good ideas go to die.”

Jill Stanek’s article tells how, thanks to Obama, good ideas died in Springfield, not to mention the death of the infants as well.

Verbal Diarrhea
Tony, saints don’t use oratory. Rather, the tongue is notoriously wicked. Of course, there are fake saints--Imposters!
Thanks Tony,

Born in a log cabin...
the offspring of two poor university professors - just like Lincoln. Attended a posh private school in Hawaii - just like Honest Abe. There are so many parallels between Obama and Lincoln, it's almost uncanny.

Who said politics isn't funny? I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when I read that he was comparing himself to our greatest president.

But upon further reflection, that degree of unmitigated gall could be dangerous in such close proximity to the power of the presidency. And that might not be so funny after all.

obamamania
We in Illinois have known Obama for far too long already.

Obama is just another glib neo-Marxist. His idea of an individual right to own a gun is along the lines of: you can have a shotgun to hunt, as long as you store it at the police station, register it with the state and feds, and sign it out for a limited time with a limited amount of ammunition. Handguns are for cops. Period. Your gun is stolen? You go to jail for improper storage. His idea of free speech is : as long as it agrees with me.

Have you busted your butt to make a decent living and live in a modest house? Obviously you make enough money to spread around to the less "fortunate". Every idea he espouses is recycled Marxist claptrap. I love that he's got his thumb in Hillary's eye, but he's even more far left than she is. Hopefully, those of us who don't swoon over his vapid cynical rhetoric vastly outnumber those who do.

Wagons West
The bags are packed, wagons loaded, horses fed. We are waiting for the wagon master to lead us west into the land of hope.....

This kid is how old?
Ah yes, 46 years old, packed with the wisdom of the ages. Amazing the wisdom, and smarts on accrues in just 46 years.
What's frightening about this charlatan is the
reaction of the mindless robotic followers, it's
deja vu all over again some 70 years back. Hitler had the same mindnumbing effect on his
zombies. Scarey is too mild a term.
If he wants a dictatorship, maybe he and his proud overpaid wifey will pack up the kids and move in with his African relatives. Then he can
take over one of those sad countries.

abortion or poverty
I think you think that the Bible mentions abortion more than helping the
poor it doesn't.

Get a copy of the Bible and also look at what Obama wants to do about
poverty.

Jesus wouldn't vote for either candidate.
He would be voting for members of the Knesset if history and
geography mean anything.

Coronation
Should Obami become Prez, will there be a Coronation ceremony, or will there be a Swearing-in ceremony in Jan 2008?

Jan 2009
oops, make that 2009!

"......Swearing-in ceremony in Jan 2008?"

Obama's Politics Sweeping America Clean
As Obama increasingly trash HillyBilly Clintloonies, more and more Americans rush to annoint him as the political messiah they have waited so long to come and sweep America clean.

Despite Obama's efforts to run a clean and decent campaign devoid of the usual mud-slinging, it appears that this election had been polarized along racial, gender, sexual orientation and age lines with a lot of media bias against Billary, in favor of Obama. More African Americans have voted for Obama (racial) as well as more whites have voted for Billary (racial). More younger voters adored and voted for Obama more than Billary (age). Older women, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders have voted for Billary, more than Obama (sexual orientation). More Latinos and Hispanics in California have voted for Billary more than Obama (racial). This shows that American voters are still uneducated and naive. You cannot vote for a candidate based on media hype and bias, race, gender, sexual orientation and age. You should vote for a candidate based on his agenda and his ability to implement that agenda for the good of the whole country. http://www.secret33.com/mortgage

Obama learns
Obama is the product of Chicago Mayor Daley operations. He was mold by the Mayor Daley on what to say and how to say it. That is what writers are for to take the message of the person and give it body. It took a lot of money to put Obama in the Illinois State capital. The Mayor had to call in favors just to do that. For the US office the Mayor had to raise the dead to do it. That election cost the Mayor a lot and he expects to get even drop of blood back with interest.
The Mayor of Chicago can get the votes out if you sell your soul to him. It is said that Obama has a heart tattoo on his chest like others who sign up with the Mayor and the Chicago machine.
"Properity of Mayor Daley"

No one to vote for!
This will be the first year in my voting life that I have no one to vote for. A friend of mine said I have to go vote AGAINST someone!! America has come a long way to self destruction, this whole thing is unbelievable. I have never seen such crowds gathering to give their support to someone who does not want the best for this country & will dis-able it from within.
