Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Just as our troops are fighting the terrorists in Iraq so we don't have to face them here at home, I watched the Democratic Party presidential debate on Monday so you wouldn't need to let those egregious people into your own living rooms. (Although, obviously, our troops in Iraq face deadly duty, while I only face deadly dull duty.)

But I did learn a few things. For the first time Monday, CNN provided us with sustained close-up shots of Sen. John Edwards' haircut, and I can now understand why he paid between $400-$1,200 a cut. At middle range, it looks deceptively like your average $18 strip-mall haircut. And it seems to look the same from the left side of his face.

But the close up from his right side is a revelation. Girding the long side of his part is an extraordinary spring-like wedge of hair running from front to back. And though bouncy, every hair remains in place -- even during vigorous head shaking and bobbing. This gives his entire hairstyle a lively, youthful look. Most middle-aged men's hair just sits on the head like a wet rag. Admittedly, the bouncy wedge does look a little flouncy when viewed from the candidate's front right. But from any other angle and from all distances other than close up, it simply gives his entire visage a healthy, animated look. Well worth a thousand bucks a crack -- at least in his part of the two Americas.

However, in Edwards' only memorable comment of the night, he rather put his foot into it. Each of the candidates was asked to describe something he or she approves of and something he or she disapproves of regarding the candidate to the left. Sen. Hillary Clinton was to Edwards' left, and he expressed disapproval of her pink (or, perhaps, coral) sweater. The questioner was clearly looking for policy disagreements, so Edward's reflexive comment on her appearance rather reminded the audience of his reputation for excessive concern with matters of grooming. It also was suggestive of his inner sexism (despite his wife's claim that her husband is better than Hillary for the fairer sex) as he would hardly have commented on a male candidate's suit jacket.

Given Edwards' essential vacuity (tempered by his instinct for southern populist demagogy), he will test how far he can make his way on Arthur Miller's "smile and a shoe shine."

Most of the rest of the debate involved the candidates showing little genuine emotion or conviction and no new ideas. Questions about healthcare were handled with outrage at President George Bush and a total evasion of the challenges of actual cost controls (Medicare, for example, is unfunded through 2070 to the sum of 40 trillion dollars or more). When one questioner asked the candidates whether they would cut benefits or raise taxes, they all agreed that neither was really necessary. Although, admittedly, Obama looked far more sincere as he emoted about the terrible problem than did the others.

Only one issue evoked genuine passion, and that was: How quickly would you retreat from Iraq? And here, the candidates had clearly been doing earnest research before the debate. Gov. Bill Richardson said he could get all the troops out in five months. Sen. Christopher Dodd claimed he could do it in seven months, while Sen. Joe Biden was insistent that it would take a full nine months to a year to move American troops and civilians down the two-lane road through Basra to the sea.

Bragging at how quickly they could retreat seems to be a peculiarly liberal inclination. While, as I recall, conservative little boys practice quick draw with their cap guns while playing cowboys and Indians, apparently liberal little boys practice how fast they can throw up their hands to surrender to the guys in the black hats.

In truth, there are nasty rumors floating around in military circles regarding the level of casualties that may be taken during a retreat of 250,000 American troops and others. As unpleasant as the Saigon retreat by helicopter is in American memory, that was for only the last of the embassy personnel. Nixon had carefully removed 365,000 soldiers from Vietnam during the period from 1969 to 1973.

Removing 250,000 Americans from Iraq over even a year on perhaps 20,000 flatbed trucks through a sniper-, mortar- and road-side-bomb-infested two-lane road may result in more casualties than anyone wants to imagine.

But the Democrats on Monday were so hell-bent on quick surrender and retreat that they never even mentioned casualties on the retreat. They should think about Napoleon's withdrawal from Moscow.

Most remarkably of all, not one of the candidates even mentioned the danger of Islamist terrorism the entire night. The Democratic candidates seemed pretty cocky on Monday. But they may have an Achilles heel: national security. Their manifest indifference to the nation's security may yet cost them public trust come next year's election.

question for Tony
Tony Blankley says: "In truth, there are nasty rumors floating around in military circles regarding the level of casualties that may be taken during a retreat of 250,000 American troops and others.... But the Democrats on Monday were so hell-bent on quick surrender and retreat that they never even mentioned casualties on the retreat. They should think about Napoleon's withdrawal from Moscow."

Hey Tony,
if by 2008, American troops are unable to retreat in an orderly fashion, with full air and naval support, from Iraq without being slaughtered, then what does that tell you about how well the surge worked?

If a U.S. pullout turns into "Napoleon's withdrawal from Moscow," then doesn't that mean that the surge failed to destroy al-Qaeda and dampen down the violence by then?

How long does the surge need to "surge," before al-Qaeda has been decimated to the point that our troops can withdraw safely? 2008? 2009? 2010? Never?

Edwards' comment
I disagree about Edwards' comment regarding Clinton's jacket. Although I thoroughly despise him (and the other democrats, for that matter), his remark was perfect.

Remember back in 2000 when Hillary was running for her senate seat against Rick Lazio? He was excoriated in the press and by feminists after he approached her during a debate as she was answering a question. Al Gore was allowed to walk in circles around Bush in the same election cycle, with howls of delight from loony libs.

No, if Edwards had commented negatively about any of Clinton's positions, he would have been portrayed as being mean to the little woman.

It's not just the candidates
who were bent on troop withdrawal. The entire Democratically controlled Congress won its control by being against the war in Iraq and demanding of withdrawal. But here we are approaching August and nothing has happened yet.

I read the Ted Kennedy is supporting legislation to mandate that the FDA regulate and control tobacco. The country is besieged by incoming food products that are tainted and toxic, and neither the FDA nor the department of agriculture has the manpower to inspect and control them -- but Ted wants tobacco regulation. The Democrats remain completely out of touch with real issues that enfold real people's lives, and instead remain focused on issues that don't matter to most of us. It's the liberal way.

The questions -- and the answers -- at the debate illustrated that perfectly.

TO ALL DEMOCRATS
The debate on YouTube was a gross mistake in judgment!Since 2000 you have been painting President Bush and the Conservative side of the party,as "DESTROYERS" of America.Your first FORAY into this concept was the election results that put President Bush in office.Subsequent to the abovementioned, you used the war,to discredit the Conservatives and Mr.Bush.Then there was;Katrina,Education,Health-Care,Immigration and Taxes.Your debate on YouTube gave a new voting audience a chance to experience our Institution of Governance. The problem for you is ,the Institution appears intact and uninjured. After hearing you charge the Republicans with it's destruction, there it was. This is not "GOOD"!Why?Because now you have removed the fear factor for a large number of voters.Voters serve the same function as a JURY.That function is to listen and evaluate.Your participation in this debate may have backfired, by giving people CONFIDENCE in a system you have heretofore "DEMONIZE".I would have used my participation in this format during the last month of the this Election cycle. This would have reduced the period of adjustment and lessened the impact. In other words, I would not have put my intent in jeopardy. When people listen, they make decisions based on what they know.Conservatives can be more convincing because people understand what they "SAY".Take some of that "MONEY" you have and hire a good PSYCHOLOGIST.PLEASE!!!

Do Democrats ever grow up?
I can't tell because I can't see into their fantasy realm where there are dancing jelly beans & rainbows shining in a continually clear blue sky.

They probably do play "surrender" games as children knowing their parents will save them when it really comes to imminent danger from the bully down the block.

Or maybe since their games as a child have no winners or losers, it never matters what they do. Let's put them back in their play pens with a large sandbox built in so they can bury their heads when necessary, and give them gov't paid access to unlimited Zoloft & Prozac so they never have to deal with real life issues.

That way they get to be right every day about the great utopia they have achieved. I won't shatter their dreams. I'll just nod & say, "you were right and guess what?" Utopia is even better, now you don't even have to vote anymore! In a utopia, the best president for the job is automatically elected every time. The best representatives and senators and judges magically get elected or appointed!

Oh happy day for you! Here's a lollipop.

There was a debate?
All I saw was a bunch of crybabies.

GeneT
Have a lollipop.

Welcome to Pull Those Troops Out!
I'm your host Wolf Blitzer, and these are our contestants in today's edition of Pull Those Troops Out! Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gov. Bill Richardson, former Sen. John Edwards, Sen. Hillary Clinotn, and the Black Messiah, Barak Obama!

So let's get started! How fast would you pull our troops out of the quagmire in Iraq?

Sen. Biden: Uh, 9-12 months Wolf.
Wolf: Wrong!
Sen. Dodd: I'll say 7 months Wolf.
Wolf: Wrong!
Gov. Richardson: I can get it done in 5 months, Wolf.
Wolf: Too long!
Sen. Edwards: How's my hair? And are you getting my good side?
Wolf: Sorry, but your answer is unacceptable.
Sen. Obama: If elected, I will make sure that all Iraqi children left after the coming genocide are given access to age appropriate sex education from the Iranians and Syrians.
Wolf: Great answer, but it doesn't really address the issues, oh mighty Obama.
Sen. Clinton: Well Wolf, I would first blame the problem on the vast right wing conspiracy, then on the failed diplomacy of the Bush administration. Then I would make diplomacy and compromise good words again while letting the UN take a greater role in the efforts. Then Bill and I would feel you pain, build a time machine, and get the troops out yesterday!
Wolf: Thank you Oh Queen of the world! Yours is the only possible answer! Johnny, tell Her Majesty what she has won!

Johnny: Well Your Majesty, for your incredibly insightful answer, you have won the undying support of the Netroots and left wing crazies everywhere! May your reign as Queen of America be blessed!

Wolf: Thanks for tuning in for Pull Those Troops Out! Good night and good luck!

The superficial response
from the debate participants particularily about really important issues (Iraq) is typical of our media also. They are so sure of their agenda and how right it is for the country that details are unnecessary. (unfortunately, many of the voters only have a superficial understanding of the issues). This morning I heard Lisa Meyers reporting on the suspicious apperance at four airports of people with a contraption of cell phone, wires and cheese and cold packs with clay inside. The worry was that the terrorists were rehearsing. Lisa Meyers smiled at the end of the report and commented that the authorities had given other warnings and nothing had happened.

Welcome to YOU MAKE THE CALL
On today's show - our cut & run contestants will decide where to "redeploy" our troops in order to eliminate anyone anywhere from hating our guts!

Bill. You won the toss up. Go..........

Well Mr Eubanks, I would redeploy them to the Moon as our intelligence indicates Osama is nowhere on the Earth, certainly not in Iraq. Hahahahaha. Therefore, the Moon is our best hope of keeping America safe.

Bob: Mr Obama, your answer please........

Hussain: Well Bob, I would first like to say that our troops should come home immediately so I can enjoy the televised bloodbath before I thank Allah for my election. I am truly blessed that my religious roots coincide with bloodbaths. I've never told anyone this before but I do enjoy a good bloodbath. However, that doesn't answer your question does it? So I will go with redeployment to Idaho. There are too many right wing radicals lurking about there that need a bloodbath of their own. I'm going to check with my handler to see if I should put it out there that I am the bloodbath candidate. Keep in mind, he and I haven't even discussed it yet, but it would separate me from the pack.

Whoh! That's going to be tough to beat. Hillary, can you top that? I know you can! Go......

Hill: Bob! You charmer! Let me forst comment that Mr. Obama's tie does not go with those socks. He should be servicing his wardrobe aid better so she will perform better. Heck, ask my husband how that improves a relationship. He'll tell you over a cold schlitz.

As for the troop redeployment, I would like to send them to France. I don't trust their new leadership and we need to prepare for the worst. They claim to be pro-USA and that can't be good. Bill has volunteered to conduct some diplomacy in the, I mean WITH the french cabinet over a cabernet before we do anything crazy, though. Bless his heart. He will get down on his knees for this country.

Bob: Well folks, there you have it. Until next time....... just remember..........America Sucks but only a good democrat will come out & say it.

FLAGWAIVER
That was a good one. My son is stationed in OKINAWA and they were just wiped out by that Typhoon that went thru there. He also stated that if we would have relocated all our troops to OKINAWA like Murtha wanted we would probably lost as mant there as we have in IRAQ WAR. He stated allot of people didnt make it. I wonder where that story is at. The drive by media didnt even cover it. I only wonder WHYYYYYYYYY.

Soccer and insurgency
I just read that the Iraqis are advancing in the Asian games. and, getting attacked for their trouble.

Given the craziness surrounding world soccer, if they insurgents continue to attack the populace and interfere in soccer [ok, futbol], we may not need a surge. Soccer fans will rip them apart just for GP.

Maybe ...
"Chicken-Hawk" Tony should comment on the fact that no one has asked any of these dim bulb Dems the question: "What is your plan to win the war on Terror?" Most Dems don't think there is a war and those few who do think the plan is to drop your weapons and get the h*LL out of the area.

How is it that...
...Townhall's message board has turned into yet another liberal attack squad hangout? Did somebody circulate an email requesting that you Take-Down Townhall?

I counted two recitations of the left-wing fantasy about "the nation voted for an Iraq pull-out." I never heard a single liberal either 1) address the likelihood that about half the "dissatisfied with the war in Iraq" was from people wanting MORE action; or 2) address the question, "If the '06 election was about ending Iraq, why did Ned Lamont lose?"

The '06 election was a relatively small shift for a mid-term election in a President's second term, and mostly reflected the Republican base's dissatisfaction with Congress' failure to pass major portions of the conservative agenda into law. The Democrats ran on nothing at all, and won because so many conservatives stayed home.

A far, far better thing
"Just as our troops are fighting the terrorists in Iraq so we don't have to face them here at home, I watched the Democratic Party presidential debate on Monday so you wouldn't need to let those egregious people into your own living rooms."

Our thanks, Mr. Blankley. Better that we fight the Democrats here at home so our troops won't have to fight them in Iraq, Afghanistan, and so forth.

That's not just facetiousness. Think about it.

Of course!
Of course the big media guys don't like the You Tube format. It puts them out of a job.

I thought it was great. Real Americans asking real questions.

No more old, rich, fat, white guy throwing softball, rehearsed "questions."

Democracy in action!

Dangers of troop withdrawal
This is very bad form, a very dishonest swipe, at least at Hillary Clinton, on the matter of protecting troops during Iraq withdrawal. That was exactly the purpose of Clinton's letter to Edelman.

She learned from her contacts inside the Pentagon that Cheney was blocking contingent logistical plans for withdrawal, so she put the hit on Edelman and Gates. Clinton said in an interview with the Des Moines Register that she is acutely aware of the logistical dangers of troop withdrawal.

Cheney was putting troops in danger by deliberately suppressing logistical planning--in order to tie the next President's hands. That is treasonous and impeachable.

I don't know if you are an American citizen, Tony Blankley. If so, do you have any patriotism at all? Nixon could withdraw troops because the logistical planning was done to bring them out safely. You should be outraged and disgusted by Cheney's actions. Or is it Republican First, American second with you?

Tony,

The fact that you can spend half an article vacuously musing about John Edwards's haircut is the exact reason why I've never understood why John McLaughlin cast you in his group.
