Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Whenever I refer to the threat of radical Islam, I am inundated with e-mails chastising me for unjustified alarmism (that is the polite description of the missives). This week, even the esteemed and often accurate British Economist accused me, by name, of overestimating the threat and being alarmist on the topic.

Not only do I hope they are right, but I regularly monitor the news for evidence of my error; for I have long taken to heart and applied to myself the advice that Oliver Cromwell gave to the Scottish Presbyterians: "I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken."

Nonetheless, while Muslim attitudes across the world are dynamic, and subtle inflections of thought are not easily captured by polling, the news continues to be not encouraging.

Last week, the respected University of Maryland Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA), released its most recent survey of Muslim attitudes on America, terrorism and related topics. They surveyed attitudes in four representative Muslim countries: Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia and Morocco.

On the question of America's influence in the world, from a low of 60 percent in Indonesia to a high of 89 percent in Egypt, they answered that most or nearly all of what happens in the world is controlled by the United States. And how do the world's Muslims see (what they believe to be) our all-powerful objectives?

From a low of 73 percent in Indonesia to a high of 92 percent in Egypt the Muslims believe that America's goal is "to weaken and divide the Islamic world." Fairly assuming that these four countries' populations represent worldwide Muslim views in Islamic countries, in other words, about 80 percent of the 1.4 billion Muslims or about a billion souls see America as hostile or an enemy to Islam.

Between 61 percent and 67 percent of the polled Muslims also thought that America's goal was to spread Christianity in the Middle East. Given that Islam teaches that Muslim converts to other religions must be executed, this purported American objective is probably not well received.

What do they think is our primary goal in the war on terror? Between 9 percent-23 percent believe it is to protect ourselves from terrorism. Between 53 percent-86 percent believe it is to weaken, divide and dominate the Islamic religion and people.

What percentage of the polled Muslims is in favor of terrorism attacks on civilians (and note the question doesn't say American civilians -- which presumably would be more popular than attacks on even Muslim civilians -- as the general form of the question suggests)?

To varying degrees, 27 percent of Moroccans, 21 percent of Egyptians, 13 percent of Pakistanis and 11 percent of Indonesians approve of terrorism attacks on civilians -- and not just American civilians. Extrapolating those percentages to the world Muslim population, roughly 250 million Muslims may approve, under some circumstances, of terrorism attacks on civilians generally. One might reasonably guess a somewhat larger number would favor it if limited to American victims.

Of course, as the study points out, "Large majorities (57 percent-84 percent) in all countries oppose attacks against civilians for political purposes and see them as contrary to Islam." We must be grateful for such mercies. But when, to fairly extrapolate these numbers, about a quarter of a billion Muslims are in favor of civilian terrorist attacks, I think prudent people are entitled to be alarmed at the magnitude of the threat. USA Hijacked by Religious Zealots
I suppose if China were occupying Canada at a cost of roughly 180 innocent civilians per day (over 200x the WTC and counting), based on the argument that anti communist missionaries had been spawned by the Christian teachings there, Mr Blankley expects polling of the general American populace would show sympathy for China's right to protect its interests. That our constitutionally enshrined love of religious freedom would outweigh our territorial instinct and we would give those Chinese leaders, who are after all overseeing an economic renaissance raising standards of living for a billion people, the benefit of the doubt. That not even 10% of our population (that's 30mm people, or the entire pop of Iraq) would react to the invasion and occupation of Canada with a vengeful sense of violation if a pollster called four years after the fact.

Religious extremism begets more religious extremism. Like Mr Blankley, I wish I had been wrong. But in fact God did not send W down to rescue all his little children from evil Arabs. America has spent hundreds of billions of dollars, wasted hundreds of thousands of lives, and trampled every Constitutional tenet that this American holds dear, in an obscene piece of military adventurism that has had one undeniable effect: to stir up hatred and resentment around the globe. Using polls that confirm this antipathy to rationalize in any way the policies that augmented it is worse than backwards logic given the well-documented sympathy of the world toward America in the wake of 9-11.

The Iraq occupation, an unforeseeably welcome recruitment tool for extremists like bin Laden, was made possible by the same kind of narrow minded, heavy handed Christianity that once engendered Protestantism and the American experiment. The hypocrisy and arrogance of our undertaking to impose our system on Iraqis under the banner of either self defense or love of mankind is even more staggering and un-American to me now than it was 4 years ago. Those fundamentalist Christians who enabled America's breathtaking abuse of power by re-electing an underachieving, overcompensating, reactionary "born again" President had best start making political decisions based on things like competence lest the escalating frenzy of extremism engulf us all.

Thanks to the religious right, we Americans now have a lot of blood on our hands. For that constituency to now decry finger pointing is a neat trick. Sorry Mr Blankley, but my bloody finger is pointed directly at the Evangelistic pulpit just over your shoulder: Stop using religious hatemongering to distract my country from its real threats. For the sake of both, keep your church out of my state.

My Interpretation of the Poll
"...the Muslims believe that America's goal is "to weaken and divide the Islamic world."

No, but this ought to be the goal. Unfortunately, the goal is to fight against "extremists" within the camp of Islam and strengthen the "moderate" camp. However the reality of the situation is that the "moderate" Muslims are ideology wed to the "extremists"; not with the West. Whether your talking about Muslims that adhere to the Wahabbi teachings of bin Laden, Shiites that follow Khomeini, or Sunni offshoots from Pakistan to the UK, they all strive for sharia, and Islamic domination. That is the central thread.

Moderates use the available freedoms of democracy, taking advantage of the vote to gain power. We're seeing this in Turkey. It's happened in Gaza with the Palestinians, and it will eventually take root in Afghanistan, Iraq, and perpaps Egypt and Pakistan. Extremists adhere to violence and terror to obtain the objectives. By failing to cite global jihad as the enemy, and instead simply name terrorism and extremistism as the enemy, we have incorrectly defined the problem and designed an erroneous foreign policy based on an incorrect premise; namely that moderate Islam is compatible with Western civilization.

Ironically, when we support Maliki, give aid to Egypt, or approve $59 million to the Palestinian government, much of the money inevitably filters down to jihadists. Our foreign policy is a disaster - not for the reasons stated by the liberal Democrats. It is a disaster because there are no leaders in either party that dare to speak the truth.
