Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The BBC reported yesterday that in the Indian state of Jharkhand, villagers fled their homes to escape a rampaging herd of grief-stricken elephants. "They say the animals are agitated because one of their herd disappeared. Officials say the missing animal became disoriented, and fell into a ditch and drowned over the weekend."

There was no mention in the BBC report whether or not the village jackasses were braying with delight at the sight of the distressed elephants.

Of course the Indian people are always disturbed when their elephants run amuck, because, since time immemorial they have relied on the strong, intelligent and friendly elephants to do their heavy lifting for them. The donkeys simply do not have the mental or physical capacity to substitute for the prized elephants.

Meanwhile in Washington, former congressman Foley is still missing, the Democrats are still blowing raspberries from the sidelines, while the Republicans are returning to their usual orderly habits. But the public, according to the polls, are nervous about the state of the Republicans, wondering whether they can still be relied on to do the nation's heavy lifting.

It is a fair question. But, as so often, guidance can be found in the advice of the master of deductive reasoning, Sherlock Holmes, who once explained to Dr. Watson: "It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize out of a number of facts which are incidental and which are vital."

And for the American voters today, the first vital fact is the nature and state of the opposition party that aspires to replace the existing majority. Rarely in the annals of American politics has an opposition party been less well prepared for governance than today's congressional Democratic Party. They have not used their decade in the wilderness constructively.

Instead of going through a period of self-assessment, reappraisal, re-organization and thoughtful reconsideration of their views on the great issues of our time (as the congressional Republicans did in the decade prior to their re-taking the House and Senate in 1994), the congressional Democratic Party has indulged in a decade of power envy, scandal mongering and vicious internecine fighting and name calling.

The first responsibility of an opposition party seeking governance is to be reasonably well organized and led. But no credible leaders have emerged amongst the congressional Democrats. There remains a vicious struggle between Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. Indeed, it is widely believed that she put up the aging John Murtha to run against Hoyer for the second leadership spot next January.

The divisions between Pelosi and Hoyer -- and the factions that follow each -- are both personal and substantive. They cannot find any reasonable agreement on the central issues of our time -- the war on terror (including their views of civil liberties for terrorists) and the Iraq War. They cannot agree on tax policy, border policy or the issues that Democrats might call identity politics and social justice. They differ fundamentally on their view of whether business and the free market are good or bad for America. Rather than attempt to resolve their differences in preparation for governance, they have -- if anything -- been widening their breach over the last year.

Meanwhile, publicly visible fighting has broken out between DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel and DNC Chair Howard Dean over both issues and the political organization of their party. There are accounts of them actually screaming at each other in more or less public.

These failures stand in vivid contrast not only with the Gingrich-led Republicans' preparation for majority, but also with the Tony Blair-led British Labour Party's preparation after Margaret Thatcher drove them into the wilderness for a long decade. Blair emerged from the ranks and forced his disgruntled, resentful and antiquated Labour Party to face the challenges of the future. Whether one agrees with all his policies or not, such preparation permitted his party to satisfy the public expectations to the extent that they have won three consecutive elections.

Similarly, Newt Gingrich's Republicans (of which I was a proud lieutenant) went to the public in 1994 with a unified leadership, a deeply substantive agenda -- including not just slogans but 10 major pieces of legislation fully drafted so the public could judge where the Republicans were planning to lead. As a result, the Republicans of 1994 eventually passed, inter alia, major reforms of welfare, agricultural subsidies and telecommunications, as well as gained a balanced budget even in the face of an opposition president.

By contrast, I would point out that, according to the Washington Post, the Democrats have gone through seven different slogans so far this year in their attempt just to find a campaign theme. This abysmal failure of the congressional Democrats to even partially prepare themselves for responsible government should be a warning to American voters -- both conservatives and moderates, both Republicans and Independents -- that as the Democrats have not yet even healed themselves, they are surely not yet prepared to help heal the country.

In future columns I plan to follow Sherlock Holmes' advice and separate other vital from incidental facts regarding the upcoming election.

I do not understand: How can one be both disenfranchised (that's the correct spelling) and be a voter at the same time? The two are mutually exclusive. Further, exactly how did control of the govenment by one party take away peoples' right to vote? I'm just wondering if even YOU know what you are going on about...

PS -

Disenfranchise - to deprive (a person) of a right of citizenship, as of the right to vote.

Man, when Kimberly
starts accusing others of viewing "mind control talking points," you have to wonder what she calls the Olbermannothons she partakes in. By the way, Kimbermann, is it BYODC (bring your own drool cup)?

SHUDDERS ;-))))))
My impression is that Nancy Pelosi is not, in any way, up to the position of Speaker of the House. It is irresponsible of her to think she can take on these issues...please, people...think before you cast that vote. Putting her in charge is a huge mistake....Imagine her trying to take charge in a 9/11 type situation...imagine the pres. is injured and the VP is in seclusion for security...and we look to her for leadership....I will say it again...think before you cast that vote!

Kimberly
Also I live out here where I see Bay area tv/SanFrisco and I have to tell you those people live in a bubble,it is hate conservative tv all the time.
They even think Jerry Brown is a conservative since he dropped the D before his name.
I take it you live out here somewhere also.

Kimberly:yes I read it
That's a plan for the security of our nation?
She thinks so small.
She also has no wish to protect the pages, she wrote"
"Not long before sitting down for a lunchtime interview, she turned down a suggestion from Speaker Dennis Hastert that they jointly appoint former FBI Director Louie Freeh to recommend improvements in the page program."
It seems to me that she knows more about the page program than she is willing to expose.

Also everything else she wants, would be better served by private industry.
Our founding fathers set up the Federal Government to protect our states from foreign invaders.
Does she have a plan for the border or illegal immigration?
This was a terrible puff piece, but what else can you expect from the Washington Post.

Really a take charge kinda gal. WOW!
Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation."
...HOW?" where is the plan....

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001
...agagin...HOW? Where is the plan...

..So far Kim, I am underwhelmed by her 'take charge' attitude. One of my sons just said something that scared the pants off of me....he hoped the Democrats get voted in on everything and anything.. let them be in charge when whatever enemy wants to send a nuke over here...fry a bunch of people and then try to blame THAT on George Bush....I guess you wont have to blame him for all the ills of the world then, will you. Wonder if MS Pelosi has a PLAN for that.

Sandy
Excelent point'I can't believe I forgot little P.rot the vote splitter.

Good post, but....
What do you have against area 51.

What I would really like to see is a short non-wordy list of us versus them on a few major subjects, like:

Repubs versus Dems
Defense;
Sex mores;
Spending;
Border security;
Honesty;

That list could go on, but I hope you get the idea. Even I can concentrate long enough to get thru this list. AND so can Demss.

I also was brought up as a Dem, Dad was a friend of Harry, but Harry was a straight shooter, not a shister. I too saw the error of my ways.

Ed

Additionally, Solar
It also appears to me that the third party voting is what brought us the administration of Bill and Hillary Clinton...twice. So based on that knowledge I will not vote for any third party. To do so, you have wasted your vote.

Lone Wolfy
I totally understand your disgust, and have pondered the same afliction upon them.
But have you considered the repercusions of your voting.
The posibility remains in a worse case scenario'
The Dems. re draw the voting block, and lock themselves in for another 40 long..long years
That would only be the begining.
No I'm not willing to take that chance.
But I do make my voice heard loud and clear in other ways.
So don't throw it away, just remember Reagan and what he stood for.

and..
before any sensibilities get bruised, I did NOT mean that 'welfare' comment for anyone on this thread...that was a generalized statement... Mea culpa.

Um...that could be, Phylo, but..
my husband and I have worked hard for every penney we have and $PEND! We live a good life and as far as lobbyists and legislators..that did not just start with this administration. Deficits?...phtfffft!!!! Tell us...just what is this 'plan."
But here is a PS for you....if you think $250,000. is whole lot of money, then y'all been living under a rock. But, to a lot of lazy welfare collectors, I guess that would be a huge sum.
Can't wait to see what y'all will be cuttin' and pastin' now. ;-)

Response to Sandy
Sandy said: "Democrats have ideas...they sure do..how to keep their hands in my back pocket and see what they can steal from our children and the hard working people of this nation..."

Phylo: Wow Sandy you must make an aweful lot of money. If you've been paying attention you would know that the Dems are only talking about reversing the tax cuts for those making over $250,000/yr.

And you didn't comment on the ideas I mentioned. Am I to understand that you like the close ties between lobbyists and legislators? Am I to understand that you don't mind deficits as far as the eye can see?

Phylo out.

I'm with you Grandma
Welcome -- as of 2000 -- to the Republican party.
I have voted since 1980, and I'm proud to say that I have always been a conservative Republican. I'm also one of those hated evangelical Christians too.

I am disappointed by the Republican congress, especially on immigration, BUT I don't want to reward the Democrat/Socialists by staying home and not voting.

You see what happens when you pay attention, and look at the facts? It's much different than the Democrats and MSM want you to believe. The Republican Party might have it's flaws, but our tent is much bigger than the gloom and doom Democrats. WELCOME!

Sorry about the typo's in the above post
No way to edit and I hit send to quickly.

Over the Years since I started voting
42 of them to be exact I have yet to witness the pathetic behavior among politicians that I have been forced to watch since Bush took office.

Prior to his election I was a Democrat, not so much because I believed or even knew what their policies were, but because my parents were staunch democrats and would have come unglued if I had told them I was voting differently.

After watching the tantrums thrown in 2000 over the recount in Florida I started paying closer attention to who and what I was voting for. To my astonishment there was nothing in the Democrat platform in which I believed. I lived through the entire change they have brought to this country, and from where I stand little of it has done anything to improve our standing either with each other or in the world.

The hatred that spews from the Islamist happens to have more to do with the standards set for us by the Democrats. We thoughtlessly kill our unborn children, while they proudly have large families. We encourage deviant behavior or at least the democrats do, while they punish it in the most formidable way. We glorify sex, drugs and criminals in our movies, and they forbid these movies in their countries. We have lowered our standards to a point in this country that even third world coutries exceed us in many ways morally. It is time to take an inventory of who we are and what we really want to be.

I have watched as things done by politicians are dredged up during political times. The whine seems to be we should over look what their history holds, but I was taught that before I did something I should think about the consequences of that action. If you screw up in your youth, you will and should live with that behavior for the rest of your adult life. You afterall are the one that made the decission.

We really need to stop making excuses for bad behavior, and fire those with bad behavior if we are the ones paying their wages. The Democrats are in disarray because their party is fragmented in to special interst groups that all want to be in charge. Right now what you are witnessing is the far left, who has always been in the margins attempting to take control. Give it to them and the asylum will indeed be run by the inmates.

Libs good for nothing
The NIE report was cut and pasted out of context. Democrats have never had any plans that are good for the country. They have no clear plans now, only hate Bush slogans. Dissent is ever present still even though Democrats are irrelevent. I don't agree with our President on all issues or Congress. Nor does the rest of the country but still support our Country & troops. If the Dems disappeared tomorrow there would still be differing opinions, but there would be solutions brought forward not just chimphitler chants and barbra steisand concerts holding concert goers hostage for a rant against Bush. They have nothing to offer but higher taxes and more attacks on US soil.

emmmjay

Dear emmmjay,

Fear should never drive your vote -- your convictions should.

Once this country roared like lions about our liberty, and now we bleat like sheep for safety and security.

I'm walking into the voting booth to proudly vote Libertarian this cycle to voice my disapproval of the BIG GOVERNMENT, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT SPENDING GOP, fully anticipating and even praying for them to lose BADLY...

...so that they re-gear and re-focus for the 2008 election and realize where their bread is buttered.

If this means that the Democrats take one or both houses, then so be it. President Bush will still have veto power over them for the following two years, and he will still be the one appointing Judges...

...so *NOW* is prime time for all small government types to send the loudest message possible to the party that claims to represent us and has spent the last 12 years proving that they just take us for granted.

I WILL BE PROUDLY ROARING ON ELECTION DAY.

Kimberly
Instead of always flying by and just asking a bunch of irrelavant questions.
Why not stick around and enlighten us as to the demos. plan.
...Oh that's right'they don't have one,or is it they know the American public might reject it.

baseballdr
Kimberbabe?
Dhimniboob?
Sounds like the kind of trash-talking engaged in while the second baseman and the runner from the opposing team have a moment to name-call each other.
Surely you have something substantive to say rather than invent squirelly names.

RE: Phylo
"The issue is ideas, and the Dems have some good ones:"

According to the DNC website, the ONLY ideas Democrats have are "We hate Republicans". Gee, now THERE'S a rational policy.

Sheesh..
I wish I could stay the rest of the day...have to SHOP!!! But, dems, try to relaxe a bit...y'all are a bit wound up...don't ya think?

If by inexcusable you mean,
challenging the Presidents' intelligence...We really would like that to stop. It wont. But then again it is far better than calling him a perverted, womanizing, two timing, rapist, lieing sociopath. We get it, now...yeah..OK..challenge his intelligence...We can live with that.

Not rational?
"Because President Bush is not rational (strictly empirical and subjective), objective facts and evidence such as the National Intellignce Estimate (NIE) are meaningless to this anachronistic man of several millenia ago."
My unabridged dictionary defines "empirical" as "based upon the observation of fact", i.e. based upon evidence. The scientific method is an empirical method. This is the exact opposite of "subjective", defined as "dependent upon opinion." One can be either empirical or subjective, but not both.
It has been established (by the much-maligned MSM) that the NIE states that the goals advocated by the President (establishing Iraq as a democratically-run, pluralistic state, and defeating the Islamists there as opposed to allowing them to attack us here a second time) are both practical and feasible. It took very careful quoting out of context for the Democrats and their facilitators to imply the opposite, which became quite clear when, as they (unwisely) demanded, the entire report was made available to the public. (Never bluff when you know the opponent holds the best cards- he might just call it.)
As for "an anachronistic man of several millenia ago", this is an accurate description of the leadership of the Islamists, in all important aspects.
If I had handed these statements in to my old stochastic logic professor as a paper, he (a self-defined atheist and hard-core liberal) would have given me an "F" for its self-contradiction. And I would have deserved it.

cheers

eon

I thought she left the building...
Kimberly...absolute power corrupts absolutley...for sure....look in your mirror, darling....total corruption.
Get your knee pads out of the closet...you will need them once your dems get back into power. They will be calling in their favors... and you will be the first....
Absolute power=LOL,that would be the Democrat party in charge of anything.....

Phylo...please....
""The issue is ideas, and the Dems have some good ones: How about pay as you go legislation? How about splitting up the tight connections between lobbyists and legislators? Just to name a few.""

How about you LOWER our taxes..how about you revamp or eliminate the welfare system..how about term limits...how about a STRONG AMERICA, so we don't EVER have to watch a 9/11 again.....Democrats have ideas...they sure do..how to keep their hands in my back pocket and see what they can steal from our children and the hard working people of this nation....yeah..the dems have ideas...let's hope they do not get a chance to implement those 'IDEAS."

JohnCitizen
What an idiot!
Follow us here?
They are here'Remember The twin Towers.
Open your freakin eyes.

George Bush isn't on the ballot, moron
JohnCitizen: We are voting for congressmen, senators, some governors, and other local politicians -- not for or against George Bush. Just keep thinking that, moron, and maybe the Republicans can eeck out a win. If Democrats keep carping about Bush and looking backwards, we can look forward to better government, even within our own party.

Our government needs serious, strong leaders, not people who are really socialists and want to tell you to give half of your hard-earned money to the government, so they can pass it on to recipients of their social programs.

Huh?
Mr. Blankley asserts that the Dems aren't ready to lead because they're divided. As if the Republican Party is so unified. Pahlease! Is that why they were able to get such a comprehensive immigration policy passed so quickly and easily. Is unity what we saw between the White House and certain members of the senate on the treatment of detainees?

But anyway, who cares? Since when is absolute unity a sign of good governance? The Nazi Party and the Communist partys were united in their ideology.

The issue is ideas, and the Dems have some good ones: How about pay as you go legislation? How about splitting up the tight connections between lobbyists and legislators? Just to name a few.

Phylo out.

Funny thing...
Seems all the opposition can do is attempt to challenge this Presidents' intelligence, as posted by JohnCitizen.

and peacethrustrength, DITTO
You penned so beautifully what we all know, but cannot write down as well as you did. Let's all hope the Democrats are too confidant...that would be a wonderful gift from God. (we can still use His name, right?)

WHAT’S WRONG WITH GEORGE BUSH?

Forget the Democrats; what’s wrong with George Bush? First and foremost, our President is not a rational thinker – his mind accepts information from only two sources: faith and experience. For example, he learned the "the enemy will follow us here" from Vietnam and the Domino Theory: “If we don’t defeat the communists in Vietnam, then we’ll have to fight them here in America.” Now just insert “terrorists” and “Iraq” into the one lesson Bush learned from Vietnam.

Because Bush is not rational (strictly empirical and subjective), objective facts and evidence such as the latest National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) are meaningless to this anachronistic man of several millennia ago. “STAY THE failed COURSE” is all that’s possible!

Ouch!!! I just hit my head!!!
when I fell on the floor from LMAO at the realization that Nancy Pelosi now makes sense....
She and Howie are the twins that escaped from area 51....THEY HAVE BEEN FOUND...OMG...there is the answer....ouch!!...hit my head again!!!!!!;-0

and Warrior LOL ;-)..
..I am sure you meant HOWARD, didn't you??....Howard Dean (area 51 escapee)...OMG...I will laugh all day with that one....keep them coming....
OH..my sides...;- ;-) AREA 51 escapee, now it makes sense, the scream and all...he was chanelling his alien friends....LOLOLOLOL!!!

Sandy . . .
thank you! Good post.

David Mac
Democrats ARE Socialist, which only the "Wizards of Words" would attempt to separate from Communist. Moreover, they are Thieves of the Republic. They vote to take your money from your pocket and use it to buy their power. They paid the hotel and motel bills of those unfortunates displaced by Katrina using your money, without your consent, in the hope of continued political power engendered by the vote of the freeloaders. There, is one sentence is an example of the Democrat program to destroy the Republic and replace it with a Socialist/Communist state. It will be in their words "what the people demanded" at the ballot box. Lies flow from their lips like water between the fingers of a nervous man.

DAVIDMAC, you are soooo right!
Democrats tell you 'how' and 'why' and 'what' and 'therefore' and 'if you don't'....it is the only way their constituents can survive....only on the money and good will of the people who are willing to work and become educated. There are those of us who know that if we do not work, we don't pay our bills. Then there are the promises from the democrats, if you need it, the government will provide it. PURE SOCIALISM!!....VOTE REPBULICAN....and end the BS....my wish is for the Democrat party to become what it used to be...the party of the WORKING people....not the LAZY SHIFTLESS ones who care not where their next welfare check comes from.

Vote for a free America
Not sure what anyone is thinking these days, but I for one, will be voting straight Republican. It is not the Republican party that has let us down, it is the Democrats. Since I threw away my vote on Carter vs Ford I learned a big lesson....vote for the party who will at least try to keep us safe. All the other stuff is BS...family values, religion, taxes...all BS....The government is in place to do FEW things...one is to keep us free from invading countries....So far...that equals Republicans, to me.

Warrior understands . . .
that the problem is too many socialist democrats who want to take over the country.

The Democrats do not want to "lead". They want to dictate. They hate the "free market" of capitalism. They hate the "free speech" that criticizes their propaganda.

Pelosi, Reid, Rangel, Dean, Kerry, Schumer, et al, want to be your bosses, not your leaders. They want to tell you how to live your life. They'll tax your income because they know how to spend it better (Clinton's statement).

Too many Americans are willing to walk down the path to socialism, either through ignorance or greed.

We cannot allow that. Vote Republican.

Hastert........No recollection
is a familiar response in Washington, D.C. Is Hastert the appointed leader of the House of Representatives or not? There is documentation he knew "something" unusual about the Foley gutter. If he has no sense of what's important and unable to sort the chaff from the wheat there should be someone else in charge...my gut tells me Hastert should go and go now.......how many times do we have a chance to evaluate Hastert in any given year? Ever see him face the public, hold press conferences, make public statements? Shouldn't the leader advise America from time to time what he views as the issues, what he's working on, etc?? Hastert has been a hermit for years...what his leadership talents are escape me. His rationale that his resignation would start a tsunami of other calls for resignation is a smoke screen to protect his own worthless butt....Hastert is one of the reasons I am now an independent...

one thing stands out
And that is the simple fact that the dems always go back to their original template - it's Bush's fault!
Granted that many mistakes have been made but senator,congressman/woman,mr. chairman - what would you suggest we do?

Perception
You would never see me seated at a lunch table , in public, with Barney Franks(homosexual), Maxine Waters( too dumb to parse the bill), Diane Feinstein(sleeps with a Communist), Nancy Pelosi(shrill and dishonest), Chuck Schumer(glib Communist), John Kerry(fraud),Russ Feingold(third generation Communist), Harry Reid (irrational rationalizer)or John Dean (area 51 escapee) even if I had a written promise they would pay the bill. This list is not all inclusive; you will note Chappaquidic Kennedy, Sheets Byrd, Trailer Park Clinton, Slicked Back Sharpton, or Extorter Jackson have not been included. Do I want any of these folks in charge--I sure hope not.

elephants vs. jackasses
Great analogy! Usual superb writing.
What a tragedy! --for the Republicans to have thrown away what Reagan so beautifully amassed and leave us with voting for the lesser of two evils.
I hate to vote for any Republican this time and would love to punish Congress for all their sins, but the fear of what the Democrats would do to this country is overcoming my disgust with my party.

Mea culpa?
"In future columns I plan to follow Sherlock Holmes' advice and separate other vital from incidental facts regarding the upcoming election."

I wonder if this is a veiled mea culpa for calling for Hastert to resign?

Ever Vigilant
I am always superstitious about being too confident about any election, but I really believe we are going to eek this one out and hang onto the majority in both houses of Congress in this one.

There are significant structural and financial advantages that we have going in our favor. These districts are drawn the way they are for a reason, and most (like Tom Delay's and Duke Cunningham's old districts) will be held onto despite scandals or any temporary shifts in the political winds. The fundamental long-term politics of those districts have not changed, only the personalities.

I worked on a GOP House race in 1994, and that situation was a completely different atmosphere. It represented a fundamental shift that had occurred many years before and was finally able to bear fruit for the GOP. Specifically, there were two huge factors in play, that are not in this election.

The first was that there was a record number of open seats due to long-time House Democrats retiring. This was mostly because of a change in campaign finance laws that made the 1994 election cycle the last that allowed them to keep their excess campaign funds personally if they chose not to run again. A lot of the old bulls decided to take the money and run.

The second was 1994 was the first non-Presidential election cycle to fully reflect the redistricting bourne out of the post-Reagan years. Had the 1992 Presidential election not been such a bad one for the GOP, we could have possibly gained even more seats, though not all the redistricting had been settled in the courts yet. The 1994 election represented and reflected a fundamental shift in the electorate and the ideological dynamic that had been building for more than a decade under Reagan.

Other than that, Clinton's failures on national health care, the House scandals, Somalia, North Korea, over-reaching gun control legislation, and the Contract For America all played secondary roles that helped compound the Dem's woes in 1994, while revving up our base. In the end, those things assisted, but were not the fundamental root cause of the GOP taking the Congress. Reagan had planted the ideological seeds many years before, and it was time to reap the harvest. No such seeds were ever planted by Clinton, because the man and his party had no ideology in the 90's other than focus groups and slogans.

The Dem's don't have enough mojo to win this thing. It is rather comical that they are acting like this in already in the bag. I hope they continue with their hubris. I think Harry Reid's intemperate and unstatesmanlike comments about President Bush's handling of the North Korea situation yesterday show the Dems are already going back to their old "Blame Bush For Everything" strategy. The same strategy that lost it for them in 2004. If there is any swing voter left in the electorate who hasn't formed a definite opinion of Bush yet, I doubt Harry Reid will be able to win them over.
