Wake Up Wal-Mart: Global Warming Regulation is Bad for Business

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Wal-Mart needs to appreciate an observation made by Napoleon: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

At the recent U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Summit, Wal-Mart announced the company was forming a partnership with the Clinton Climate Initiative to develop and sell energy saving products for lower prices to cities. This announcement is further evidence that Wal-Mart’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies are damaging its business.

Wal-Mart believes it can use the concern about global warming to improve its public image. Accordingly, the company is disclosing its estimated environmental impact and promoting its actions to reduce its carbon footprint. By following this model of a CSR company, Wal-Mart hopes to earn public credit by playing an active role in being part of the “solution”.

The problem for Wal-Mart is its CSR strategy has blinded it from the reality that global warming alarmism and subsequent regulation is a colossal business risk. In the short term, the company will get some positive headlines for being “green” but in the long term, the impact of high-energy prices from global warming regulation will harm its business.

Unbelievably, Wal-Mart’s CSR strategy includes lobbying to increase its operating costs. Wal-Mart is demonstrating its “responsibility” in fighting global warming by supporting a cap-and-trade regulatory scheme to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2006, Wal-Mart joined a number of other companies in a Senate hearing and urged Congress to establish mandatory emissions on carbon dioxide. At the hearing, Wal-Mart’s vice president of corporate strategy and sustainability said, “Because we see climate as a critical social issue and because we believe that greenhouse gases can be cost-effectively reduced throughout the economy, Wal-Mart would accept a mandatory cap-and-trade system to control greenhouse gas emissions.”

Since fossil fuels account for over 80 percent of U.S. energy supplies, cap-and-trade will drive energy prices significantly higher.

Because of its mammoth size, energy is a major driver of Wal-Mart’s operating expenses. It operates one of the largest truck fleets in the nation. In fact, according to its website, Wal-Mart owns almost 7,000 trucks that drive over 870,000,000 miles a year and consume an estimated 134,158,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

In addition, Wal-Mart is the largest private consumer of electricity in the U.S. Clearly, even a modest increase in energy prices will dramatically increase the operating cost of its business.

Importantly, higher energy prices will also harm its customers. In August, the company reported disappointing quarterly earnings that were partially attributed to higher gasoline prices that reduced consumer spending.

With oil prices approaching $100 a barrel, Wal-Mart’s customers will be squeezed even further. According to a recent story in the Wall Street Journal, the cost to heat a home in the northeast could more than double, “Between 2000 and 2005, the average cost in New England for a winter's supply of heating oil was about $900 a household. Last year, it hit a record $1,433 and this year it could reach $2,200, said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association.”

Wal-Mart does recognize its energy liability and it is trying to reduce its energy consumption in its truck fleet and stores – that’s good business. However, these savings will be overwhelmed by a dramatic rise in energy prices resulting from global warming regulation. Even if the company obtains revenue from selling carbon credits, its customer’s purchasing power will be reduced.

Ironically, by acting “responsibly” Wal-Mart is negligent to its shareholders, employees and customers. Supporting regulations that will decrease their customer’s standard of living and add to its operating costs is an example of corporate irresponsibility.

A responsible company would first investigate the claims about man’s role in climate change and set a business course based on reality despite the prevailing notions of the liberal elite. Such an investigation would lead Wal-Mart to recognize the unproven relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and global warming. In this scenario, Wal-Mart would execute a completely different strategy: lobby for a national policy encouraging domestic energy exploration.

However, conducting this type of due-diligence is counter to the CSR movement whose philosophical underpinning is socialism.

Finally, it will only be a matter of time until the labor unions and environmental activists use Wal-Mart’s immense carbon footprint, which the company has graciously provided on its website, as an argument against building more superstores. In the U.S., its truck fleet emits 1,365,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and its stores release over 15 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Prompted by its critics, many mayors will find it politically expedient to oppose construction of new superstores. With some mayors campaigning against bottled water to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, targeting Wal-Mart is a no-brainer.

It’s amazing that Wal-Mart’s critics have remained quiet so far. But then again, perhaps Wal-Mart’s critics are heeding Napoleon’s advice.

"Doing good by doing well"?
The Corporate Social Responsibility movement is one of the great frauds foisted upon businesses. I've had the misfortune to deal with one of the major players in the movement: he's a professor, NOT a practitioner, which is no surprise.

This academic gets to give seminars and host conferences and be interviewed by newspapers and congratulated on what a wonderful person he is (I assure you he's not). Social/psychic rewards, not money is the reason the fraud of CSR is harped on endlessly.

Walmart, has done a lot to improve the quality of people's lives by keeping their prices low. Don't ruin it by listening to narcissistic professors and activists who think they know how to run a business better than those who do.

Walmart's Legacy Squandered
If Sam Walton were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave, the old producer, Louis B. Mayer, might have said. Why on earth do rich inheritance kids insist on screwing up the model set down by the old man?

Walton would have recognized "global climate change" for the poppycock it is. His kids view it as a marketing opportunity. So what if prices go up?

They can kiss their wonderful company goodbye because there's no way they can compete with ambitious young warriors out there.

It'll take a while for them to tank, but tank they will if they follow this carbon foot-printed path to its logical conclusion.

Arrogance of money is what it is. Sam left his assets to elitists who come from the same pond as Alga Gore.

Borelli missing the point
Tom Borelli has good intentions with this column but he is missing some key points here in this Wal-Mart push for AGW and it's bandwagon. First, even Borelli said it, they will sell "green" products as in SELL. Not only is this an advertising campaign for PR to the eco-idiots, but they also intend to SELL, which is their main business.

In addition, by helping the crooked politicians pushing this scam, they will expect a payback when the legislation is drafted. Who knows what promises have already been made behind closed door and will never see the light of day?

Remember some key points that Borelli made:

1. Wal-Mart is a huge user of electricity. Yes, this is true. It ius also true that 70% of our electricity cones from fossil fuel. What is missing here is that this also applies to their competitors. In this manner huge increases in electrical costs will have a no impact on competitiveness.
2. Wal-Mart is a huge user of trucks and transportation. Yes, this is true, but then so are their competitors, although in this case the competitors probably are not into the transportation end as much as Wal-Mart. What is missing from Mr. Borelli's discussion is that the eco-idiots have said that autos are not a big source of greenhouse gases. This leaves the door open for congress to make sweetheart deals with the truckling industry (unions) and Wal-Mart. Look for huge increases in the gasoline tax but not in diesel fuel tax. (Note we have already seen proposals for this).

And finally, this is just the tip of the proverbial melting iceberg. When new sources of regulation pop up, and the doors are closed, then congress and the "special interests groups will negotiate away like rats chattering away inside the walls. The only people who will really suffer are the average working joe's and jane's who have to pay for it all.

So what else is new?
The sunspot cycle is just about at an end, and when it ends the climate will go back to what it was. Most of the noise being made now is about things that people PROMISE to do, not things they ARE doing or PLAN to do. Wal-Mart is buying time by clanging the gong and tinkling the cymbal in the direction of people who could wade in and do real damage to their business if they chose to. Wal-Mart is playing for time by making lots of lip-flapping to distract the baby from falling off the porch until they can get over there and snatch him away.

All good business people learn how to tap dance, how to run the snappy patter, how to make sure the hand is quicker than the eye. Wal-Mart is playing for time.

Doddle
While I agree with your thesis, I think you need to try that first sentence again......

Vic is right... as usual!

Wal Mart's business is to SELL!

Wal Mart's "bottom line" depends on how MUCH they SELL!

Wal Mart has carved out its demographic and marketing strategy!

Focusing on "green" and "gloBULL warming" is one of their many marketing strategies to SELL!

Keep this in perspective, and look at it for what it is...

Besides, the wheels are quickly coming off "gloBULL warming" wagon....

Letters to CEOs
To All,

First, I'd like to thank you for your comments.

We are setting up a website that will allow individuals to send emails to company officials at Wal-Mart and other companies that have become agents of the Left.

I think they would benefit from your views and insights.

If anyone wants to participate, please send me an email: tom@feafund.com

Liar
"In the short term, the company will get some positive headlines for being “green” but in the long term, the impact of high-energy prices from global warming regulation will harm its business."

Wrong. Here we go again.

Walmart has saved money by going green. This op/ed suffers from the "if its liberal it must be bad" syndrome.

If I buy a Prius and save money every week on gas, I'm saving money on gas.

Similary, Walmart has saved money by cutting transportation costs. They've reduced packaging weight tremendously thus eliminating waste in land fills and saving money on transportation.

When SUN rolled out its "green" servers, they people who bought them weren't buying them because they were "green". They were buying them because they saved money by using less energy.

Toyota came out and said that by 2020, all its cars will be hybrids. That means buying a Toyota will mean better gas mileage than for GM or Ford.

If the government in this country were to come out with regulation saying all cars in this country were to be hybrids by 2019, it might make GM and Ford competitive.

Walmart and Toyota are ahead of the curve on understanding the economics of rising gas prices to stay in business, which is really what this is all about. With oil at 90 cents a barrel and soon to be a buck a barrel, you'd be stupid not to factor that into your business plans.

But, since it is a liberal concept to "go green" the Republicans are going to reject it and hence reject all plans to compensate for oil having gone from $30 - $90 / barrel since Bush took office.

konop- the McCain video clip
I watched the video you posted here and elsewhere.

McCain was asked a question about renewable energy. He advocates development of renewable energy sources and market driven plans that would reduce emissions. He is against carbon taxes.

The term "global warming" never appeared in the clip, except when he said he would have awarded the Nobel Prize to someone other than Al Gore.
I think your title (...for fighting global warming) is misleading, therefore. Is that intentional?

AudiR10
I don't think Wal-Mart is looking at this as a “holding action” to delay the feds until the earth starts cooling again. Proof of the falsehood of previous enviro-scams has not resulted in the rollback of previous laws. Look at the DDT scam and Freon. Are we marketing DDT and Freon 12 again? Have we eliminated the requirement to have “special licenses” to work on air conditioners?

Smart companies will know this and act accordingly. Nobody has ever accused Wal-Mart of being a dumb company.

Anne
Thanks, but you will give the big head.

Tom: Excellent!! "a website that will

allow individuals to send emails to company officials at Wal-Mart and other companies that have become agents of the Left."

I trust you'll be posting the url when it's set up and ready to go...

I'd be happy to participate.. Email on the way! :-)

Gore's disservice
The real disservice done to us all by making Global Warming an alarmist issue is that it really detracts from the environmental issues we should be addressing. Because it's been polarized, we can't talk about cleaning up the water and air or conserving energy and resources without pushing the GW hotbutton.

The Goreacle and his followers think the world is coming to an end because of our SUV's, which is so stupid that it pushes the other side to an extreme of dissing a corporation that wants to adopt environmentally friendly policies.

SunThe1: Of course! Leave it to the

leftists to spin and "mis-represent" anything....

McCain didn't exactly "say" what konoooop would like to believe!

Dow Chemical

Dow Chemical thought it too could play the lobbying game to enhance its profits. The front page story in the WSJ discussed its failed strategy. Is Wal-Mart smarter than Dow?

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119152216982649126-x T32hjsQXMurqsELGzssnPBYgvs_20071207.html

Sunthe1
That Gore has detracted from the effort that really needs to be addressed (cleaning up water and air and conserving energy)is the real point. Who is against a dirty earth? No one , of course, but the religious alarmism has made it such that one has to sign on as an alarmist or a "denier".

Wal-Mart/Carbon Footprint
It's difficult to believe that an organization such as Wal-Mart, the once ultra-savvy, ultra-competitive example of entrepreneurialism, would choose to participate in the "ultimate politically correct scam". How short-sighted! How the mighty have fallen!

liberty173
Thanks for that great link. That is a superb example of why the Government should get out of the energy business all together. The government should not be making “winners and losers”. This is invitation to corruption and it distorts the markets.

Wal-Mart isn't THAT stupid!
Prof. Borelli seems to believe that the folks running Wal-Mart can't see beyond the first move in the chess-game they're playing. Vic points out too that the Prof is missing the point. Wal-Mart lives and moves and derives its livelihood from a business environment that is composed, to an increasing extent, of government regulation. However un-realistic the regulations, the eco-idiocy, the glo-bull warming enthusiasts may be, that is the reality within which Wal-Mart has thus-far thrived. To imagine, as Prof. Borelli does, that its directors have uncritically swallowed the CSR Kool-ade and are unwittingly incurring unanticipated future costs is, at best, foolish; at worst, laughably self-important.

The efficiencies that have made Wal-Mart better-suited than its competitors to dominate the market have also made it better-suited than its competitors to weather whatever regulatory storm the low-watts in Congress can stir up. One can almost imagine Wal-Mart saying "Bring it on!"

BOYCOTT THE GREEN SLIME MACHINE

.....The next time you hear a politician mention the environment ...vote for his opponent ...if you own stock in a company that announces it is going green ...sell it ...

.....It is amazing to watch the power of the political/media machine to coerse successful businesses into committing economic suicide ...

.....The Global Warming/Green Movement/Machine leads to a future of higher taxes ...higher costs for energy and goods ...a lower standard of living ...conservation leading to rationing ...higher trade deficits and a National debt that promises the collapse of the dollar ...

.....If the dollar collapses ...inflation will go through the roof and fixed income pensioners (read Social security recipients) will be eating dog food and saving accounts and IRA's will lose most of their value ...

.....But like mindless lemmings the sheeple follow the Pied Pipers (Al Bore/Democrats) over the cliff ...as America sinks to a second tier power and China emerges as the Industrial Giant/Super Power of the next century ...

.....It was fun while it lasted folks .....COLOSSUS

Wal-Mart isnt THAT stupid
Let's only hope! I've seen incredibly obtuse business decisions made by supposedly "smart people".

Wal-Mart Management
As to who is really running Wal-Mart...

http://www.walmartfacts.com/articles/4361.aspx

Business Vs. Virtue
There was a time when banks, for example could be counted on the maintain financial standards, a quality control if you like, over their business practices. Now, the largest of these institutions in the lending business are taking their excesses in promoting risky loans...all business, business without ethics and standards to great losses for their institutions and weakening of the economy.
WalMart is doing the same thing, like a kid who washes his hands and face but infrequently takes a bath. They've lost standards and seek only the dollar by exploiting the public.
These poor decisions businesses make for temporary market share will haunt them.
NBC damn near hired ROSIE, to boost their ratings and would have resulted in lowering the standards of tne news network. Guess someone took a bath oof reality in time.
Virtue is important and living with values is important. For those who loose their sense of ethics to a temporary advantage...it will come back to haunt them.
My question is, Where are the leaders in industry today? Who is setting the standards in various industries? It is getting real embarassing to be associated with these greedy, arrogant, scamers in many businesses today.

Col DOUG

Of course
... WalMart is prepared to lobby for government regulation that will be a bigger disadvantage to its small competitors than to WalMart.

Duh.

The place to fix this is at the point where government regulates. Don't do so much of it, and you won't have big companies favoring it because it overburdens their competition.

Regulation that addresses tangible, EXISTING problems is one thing. Regulation that is designed to avert predicted problems, and/or remake the map of society and the economy, is quite another. As SunThe1 observes, we are being urged to do the latter, to the exclusion of giving intelligent consideration to the former. This is a very real concern.

Paddy's Parodies strike again
Check out my latest. Paddy's Parody to the Green

GW will cost a fortune
Higher taxes, fees, and surcharges will soon be attached to everything to be "green."

The entire Western standard of living is under attack by people who hate America, the Western life style, and people in general.

It's too bad they don't indulge in a mass suicide to save us from their smothering CO2 every time they open their mouths.

The only conclusion I can draw from this
Conservatives believe in: Divine rulers, ghosts, Satan, Angels, demons and geographical domains that hold hell and heaven

Conservatives do not believe in: rising temperatures, receding lakes and rivers, melting glaciers, and droughts.

Go figure

Let me say it for you
Rising temperatures are a web of lies and myths perpetrated by liberals and their lefty scientist friends, probably on the liberal payroll, in the interests of something that we don't know yet.

False photographs of shrinking glaciers, demographic movements, and lowering lake levels are all photoshopped somewhere in a liberal bunker which is ruled by a man with a giant head who wants to take over the planet and populate it with agnostics.

Why don't you just come out and say it? Oh, that's right, you already did.

Renny said

"The entire Western standard of living is under attack by people who hate America, the Western life style, and people in general."

Thanks for proving my earlier point, Renny. I can always count on you.

Touj
The seas are not rising. Visit the barrier islands of the East Coast and they are occupied (shouln't be if we were really environmental) and not flooded or flooding.

Temperatures were higher during ancient Greece and Rome. Why should small rises in temp. be a problem? The ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated their big spring fertility ceremonies in what is our February and were ready to go to war on dry roads in March (named for Mars, the god of war).

Glaciers go through periods of growth and retreat like many natural processes. The glacier on Mr. Kilimanjaro is not melting from GW, it is retreating due to solar radiation. Lake Chad is not drying up due to GW but due to high levels of irrigation. The Antarctic is not melting or shrinking. The center is growing larger and colder. The "sea" at the "North Pole" isn't from warming. It happens all the time, depending on the size of the ice packs, and whacko "green" humans always whine and weep when it does. Canada thinks it has more polar bears than ever, so they aren't disappearing either.

If greens/libs really were worried about GW, they would turn off their computers, buy long johns for underwear, and live where they could walk to stores. I don't see many doing that, altho' I do live where I can walk everywhere and do.

Abolition was bad for business, too...
Reducing our carbon footprint is a moral issue. You know, like when we conservatives oppose things that threaten the sanctity of human life: abortion on demand, child poverty, wars of aggression…

I'm as libertarian as you. I don't want government to “fix” anything we can fix on our own. Laws force better behaviour, but don’t improve attitudes - often laws cause a backlash that undermines our efforts to meaningfully advance Christian values.

But if you're going to bemoan the evils of public intervention, don't pick on laws that at least support Christian values - like respecting the poor, or conserving nature.

Instead, why not pick on the worst government transgressions - like spending trillions to butcher and thieve oil-rich nations – marketed as war against a tactic, but really just a naked power grab. Wars that violate the ethical foundations of every religion are doomed; the battle for hearts and minds is lost before it begins. And your soldiers – your nation’s best and bravest - end up paying the price of incompetence at the top.

There is no more bloated, self-serving, self-perpetuating bureaucracy than the U.S. military-industrial complex. Help me fix that; then we’ll talk about green laws.

Those very concerned about GW
I would ask you:
What's in your trash cans? Any paper or plastic you could have recycled?

When's the last time you drove to a recycling center (or do you only recycle when it's convenient-or not at all?)

When's the last time you picked up litter at a riverside or a beach?

What do you personally do besides drive a prius?

Or is it just far easier to screech that others should do something about global warming?

The real point isn't global warming (Mars is heating up too). So it's warming now, has done before, and will cool, then warm again. It's done so for eons, without man's help.

The real point is conserving energy, cleaning up the environment are worthy things, regardless of the particular earth cycle we're in. The GW screech takes the focus off the real point.

ALL
What is really aggravating is that we have a bunch of scummy left wing trolls who regularly come on TH to make trouble. They come and go but they have one thing in common. After a few posts most people recognize them for what they are and begin ignoring them. Once they are honored with the official designation of "scrollby" or even better, they get banned for really obnoxious behavior, they go away and come back under a different name.

We have another iteration now under the name of "NewAmericanCenturySucks", a borderline obscene handle. One wonders if this is NYC Dog, TCA, or which other troll it is that has wallerede out from the bridge.

It sure would be nice if TH would ban these people by their IP address rather than email account and handle.

sunthe1, vic
sunthe1: "The real point isn't global warming (Mars is heating up too). So it's warming now, has done before, and will cool, then warm again. It's done so for eons, without man's help."

-you say it like it is magic. each time the climate has changed in the past there has been a reason. currently, the reason for warming is the man-made gasses in the atmosphere that hold in the earths heat.

vic:
-its good to see you don't mind that everyone knows you are against free speech.

FOOLS
Whatever will they do when the new cold cycle begins? Will, once again, we go back to "global cooling" alarmism? It hasn't warmed sine 1998 and a lot of scientists think we have already began the cold cycle. I can't wait for the wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth and watch the fools wriggle around in their own folly.

They hope to impose regs so they can claim credit for cooling, maybe?? But what happens when it starts to really cool? Maybe they will encourage everyone to release as much CO2 as possible to save the planet. "Such fools these mortals be."

traitorous repub
And we're warming up mars too? My, my.
No it's not magic. The sun has alot to do with it, as do other events. It's not the emergency it's made out to be.
But let's say you're right. What are you personally doing to stop it?

Real Problems
Are being ignored. That is the criminality of the Goracious one's endeavours. While he and his lobby for the designation of Carbon,( the basis of life on our planet ), as a toxin, real toxins like Mercury are not only ignored, but expanded. Instead of reducing exposure to this toxin, the GW folks have increased ou exposure through CF light bulbs. I think I'll go stand on my head for awhile. Maybe something will look right.

sunthe1
i left your mars comment alone because i didn't want to embarass you, but...
what on earth makes you think the climate of mars is something we know anything about at all? do you know anyone who has ever been?
if you are suggesting that the sun is getting hotter then the earth would get much hotter than mars simply because it is closer to the sun.
what do i do to try and leave less of a footprint? well i rarely drive my car, most places i need to go are within wailking distance. i rarely eat meat that was raised on a factory farm, instead preferring wild game and family farm raised animals. oh yeah, and i never vote for republicans, ever.

tr
Keep talking...it's not me you're embarrassing.
:)

Vic writes

"What is really aggravating is that we have a bunch of scummy left wing trolls who regularly come on TH to make trouble"

I know, facts are so troublesome, aren't they? And definitely aggravating, especially when they don't conform with popular mythology.

Kilamanjaro is melting from the sun? Mars is heating up?

Now that's some science, folks, right up there with the 600 year old earth and cavemen riding dinosaurs.

SunThe1: tr is an embarrassment to

the human race. Ugh!

I admit, I just posted this on another

thread... but I thought it was worth posting here as well....

The real global warming… coming soon!

I suspect that we're really in for some global warming, and it will, I promise, be man made.

First of all, we have the algore globull warmies who are already heated up and furious because “we” won’t buy into their hoax. So imagine how they'll react when this "globull warming" hype is finally, once and for all, squashed.

Thousands of people ex-ploding all at the same time?

That many people.. exploding simultaneously, would have to cause some increase in the air temp… And remember these warmies are all over the world!

Ergo, man-made gloBULL warming!

Now, add to that the ronpaulists, who, by every indication, are just as heated up and volatile about ronpaul, and furious because we won’t buy into the ronniepaul thing.

And, if you think I’m kidding? Last night one paulist provided “me” the “ron paul or you’ll pay” threat.

"They [Republicans] may hang on to power for one more year, but they will be facing a lynch mob. Then, Anne, you will see how large the Ron Paul revolution ACTUALLY is."

So imagine how they’ll react when ronniepaul doesn’t get the nomination, and we have paulists exploding all over the place. (Hint: Not a pretty picture!)

Ergo, more man-made gloBULL warming!

But, my main concern is, who are we going to have to play with ???? LOL

Bad for Business ...
dying is also bad for Business.

Sun the 1 said

"Or is it just far easier to screech that others should do something about global warming?"

Sun, you should read these posts more carefully. Right wing conservatives don't even admit that things are warming up. They think everything is the same as it was 50 years ago, so they're not about to do anything.

"... not about to do anything."

Oh, contraire!!!

We're laughing at the loony leftists. We've been doing it at least since algore decided we were suffering from gloBULL warming, and we will continue to laugh until that HOAX is finally put to rest...

Oh, Anne
You're so deep!!

I'm wondering,
I think that Anne just might be the GW Scientific authority you all access for facts.

Various posts on this thread certainly make it seem so. The "GW is a hoax" mentality pretty much describes the level of most of these contributions.

:-)
.

global warming-hoax
if global warming is a hoax then it is the most scientifically backed hoaxes of all time.

anne- you need professional help to work through your problems

touj:That's the problem, you DON'T think

If you did, you'd realize how stupid and ridiculous this whole gloBULL warming hoax really is.

Geeze, I bet you were all about the "ice age is coming" scare, the "aerosol" panic, the "hole in the ozone" alarm, and "DDT" hysteria.

tr: the most scientifically what?

You obviously haven't done your homework....

Most of the scientists/climatologists who "supposedly" backed the gloBULL warming theory actually DIDN'T!

And now, more and more scientists/climatologists are publically saying that there is such thing as AGW and it was a stupid hoax from the beginning.

tr: Here'a s little homework for you....
Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming ‘Greatest Scam in History’

Now run off and read that..... Study hard because there will be a test at 10am tomorrow...

anne
you colossal idiot. the founder of the weather channel is not a climateologist and has nothing to do with the company now, which obviously reports factually (my way, not yours) on global climate change.
your assertion that scientist/ climatologists are publically saying there is no such thing as climate change is wholly fabricated. who are they and what peer reviewed publications print there results, assuming they have results?
god your dumb.

Big Box Stores are Transitory
Yeah, perish the thought that Wal-Mart should show base any of its corporate decisions on mainstream science that virtually everyone accepts unless they subscribe to an ideology that makes such acceptance painful or inconvenient.

But there is a larger problem here, and that is the fact that Wal-Mart is inherently unecological---a transitory manifestation of a cheap-oil era that is rapidly coming to an end. James Howard Kunstler's fascinating recent book "The Long Emergency" does a good job of describing how the big-box stores will be "gone with the wind" once petroleum prices spiral upward in response to peak oil. We got along just fine with local department stores, locally grown and processed foods, etc., and we will again---eventually. But the transition will be painful---in part because of conservatives who have helped to head off the kind of realistic energy policy that allows us to use our full capacity for efficiency as a bridge to renewables.

written by actual scientists/climatologists, do you?

Naw, he's probably off sulking in the corner because that's pretty much what ignorant twits like tr do when they get shown for the fools they are.

Who Speaks For the People?
Yes, spending money for environmental safeguards is bad for business. But it protects people.

Yes, regulating consumer products is bad for business. But it protects people.

I hear who speaks for business: business, its lobbyists, the politicians who receive its payola, right-wing journalists, talk radio, and the right-wing Parrot Chorus. They all speak for business.

But who speaks for the people?

lilly: WHAT are you talking about???

This is about Wal Mart and its involvment in the gloBULL warming hoax.

It has NOTHING to do with protecting the people from anything...

That's a discussion for another day.

lilly, The People Speak For The People

I'm not blinded by the hidden ingredients the medicine man mixes in his potion, has I'm the medicine man for my families ills, just as the people are the medicine men for the American family.

even though your entirely ignorant you display alot of gusto. that a real long list of people who may or may not exist. what is certain and undeniable is that none of these people you've named has published anything in any peer reviewed journals suggesting global climate change isn't occuring.

tr: You fool. You're WRONG again!
It's absolutely egregious how you imibicles come up with such tripe!

Don't even bother posting another idiot thing until you've done your homework.

anne
hahahalol
thanks for the icecap link.
if those guys want to make names for themselves they ought to submit something for publication.

reposted as it applies here too....
Wake up folks...
Global Warming is just the newest thing to be politicized for the purpose of controlling we the people. Twenty five years ago it was global cooling, we were on the verge of another ice age.

The truth is somewhere in the middle and has nothing to do with carbon credits and all the new green stuff, which are just another ploy for making more money by, guess who.

Good stewardship of the planet makes sense, but Al Gore and other elites who are causing the ruckus aren't interested in saving anything other than their own fortunes and making them bigger.

The planet was not created by man. If it can be destroyed it will be for reasons other than environmental damage. The resiliency of the planet to adjust to environmental changes is proven, because it is still here and still adjusting.

anne
what did i say that was wrong? have they published any scientific papers in peer reviewed journals?
it is very anne-like of you to accuse me of being wrong without telling me where.
you keep saying homework...are you a little kid?

Who said they haven't? You?

And we all know what you know... NOTHING!

But, keep up making yourself out to be the idiot you are. That's about the ONLY thing you seem to be even somewhat good at.

I've done mine, which is why I know a little... no, actually, a LOT more than you do.

See, I've taken the time to read and listen to BOTH sides of the AGW argument... which, I pretty sure YOU HAVE NOT! Why do I say that? Because of the stupid, vapid, ill-advised statements you post.

So, STOP being an ignorant fool and get some education. Only an ignorant fool would assume that those who are better qualified, such as the list of contributers on ICECAP, don't know better than you, and haven't been published.

Try reading some information that is opposition to your assumptions, and find out what's going on.

tr: I did! You just don't have the cajon

to read it.... IF you're capable of reading anything that EXPERTS write, that is.

Anne, people like TR....
don't need to look at both sides of anything. They just like being abused by their betters, and I am not speaking of me or you, but rather you know who but TR doesn't.

OFF TOPIC: BAD Virus --CNN announced
-- Snopes confirms as real.

Here is a link to the snopes page:

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever. This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee . This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner:
It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title:

'You've received a Post Card from a Family member'.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+ delkeys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York , according to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself.

So don't open any mails with subject:'A Post Card from ' As soon as you get the mail, delete it !! Even if you know the sender !!!

jd handsome son
haha. that was a good one.
although it would have worked better if i said "horse".

The left won't like a depressed
US because their welfare and unemployment checks will be curtailed and the taxes, fees, and surcharges they envision to restrict energy will leave them sitting in the dark looking at their dead computers because the electricity has been shut down again so the country can meet the harebrained demands of the hypocrits still flying around the world wasting jet fuel to be met by limos that use 8 gsllons to the foot so they can be delivered to the dais at some 10,000-seat lecture and give a canned speech on carhon footprints while being lit by dozens of kreig lights that use more power per minute than most normal households use in an entire year.

God help us for falling for that krap.

If the earth is warming, and it has been warmer and colder, the cause is heightened solar radiation that is warming every planet and moon in the solar system. What Al Gore can do about solar radiation isn't worth guessing.

jds handsome son
" Once we've bought into this hoax, the next step is the restriction of our freedoms and the confiscation of our property to further lessen our "carbon footprint"."

- so, when you say restriction of freedoms, do you mean these global warming proponents will secretly, and illegally tap the phones of whomever they want with no judicial oversight?
please prove to me that you aren't just a pretty face. explain better than you did how you think we will lose our rights if we demand clean air.

jds handsome son
would you gas the liberals and then burn them to dispose of the bodies like hitler? or are those just two different ways to reach the final solution for people who think our earth is in a climate crisis?

Thankfully reptiles...
don't need much air.

Positive proof of Global Warming
I'd just like you all to know that right here in my home, today, I saw positive proof of global warming and ice caps melting.

This morning when I got up I had to turn up the heat in my home as it was so cold outside overnight. Then I took a tray of icecubes out of the freezer and set it on the counter for a minute while I took care of personal business.

When I came back, sure enough the temperature in the room had risen and the caps on the ice had started melting.
So there you have it, solid proof that warming temperatures cause ice to melt.

Charles S, does this mean...
that I have to sell my paid for my 1996 gas guzzlin' suburban and go into debt to buy a Prius. I wonder who that is gonna benefit? Not me evidently.

fw
no, it means you go into debt driving around town. thanks gwbush!

Now, that’s the JD's Handsome Son
whom we know and love!

What I have found more than interesting were the “death threats” and “threats to personally and professionally destroy” those scientist/climatologists who disagreed with AGW.

That, in and of itself, should be big red flags and loud shrill whistles alerting everyone that something is not right!

Nah. Keep the Suburban

Charles S, does this mean...

It's higher off the ground so you have more ground clearance for an easier getaway when you run over the envirowhackos that are waiting for the planet to melt.
Either that or you can drag more of them along on the ground under your vehicle.

Charles S, Whew thanks
I knew there were good reasons for driving a good, solid sturdy vehicle. BTW I don't live in town, and I make my trips count.

Farmer's Wife; Well there's the rub!

Most right thinking people pretty much think that if you want to continue to drive your "paid for" 1996 suburban it's up to you!

However, the lunatic leftists would really rather TELL YOU what YOU SHOULD DO with YOUR car.

Now, let me ponder this for a moment or two...

Hold on.... still pondering! :-)

Okay, I'm done pondering. I think you should make your own choice. It's your car, and your money... (at least so far!) so it should be your choice. (Radical idea though it may be!) :-)

Yesterday I came across a quote

from Barry Goldwater....

“A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.”

Sounds like these liberal lunatics are trying to burn the candle from both ends....

I bet some of those...
common folk who have some Exxon in their 401K are pretty happy to pay more for gas. This is America, since when is making a profit a bad thing.

If we could drill for our own oil we wouldn't be paying so much. Thank you enviornmentalists and Democrat (socialist) shills.

Anne, You are so correct!
__I wrote a short piece awhile ago, on my page here at Townhall, about these Laptop Lapdogs. It always amazed me that they try to tell baldface lies, and give you a link to prove the lie. While some of those links may tell a tale of doom and gloom, it is not hard to find out the sources behind those links. Never could figure out whether they are to lazy to do the research, or they just don't care. Probably a bit of both.

Anne, thanks for
confirming what I thought were still my decisions to decide what works best for me.

Farmer's Wife: EXACTLY!!!!

And, what about some new refineries!

Now there's an idea! :-)

Oh wait, we tried. Yup, the enviornmentalists and Democrat (socialist) shills said "No!." Go figure!

Farmer's Wife; I know, we begin to

wonder sometimes, don't we????

But then, not too long ago my "inner passive aggressive" made me go out and buy a Grand Cherokee.

Had to do it!!! Kind of like when I see one of those PETA nutcases on tv, I have to go out and buy a fur. Just makes me feel better. LOL

Anyway, I'm just waiting for Mrs. Paddy to get those bumper stickers printed up.... "I 'heart' My Carbon Footprint!"

Anne.. always
some sour apples in the basket, that have to be tossed.

Expound Truth: Thanks. :-)

I'm just stunned at the bold faced lies that are too often posted as 'truth.' And you'd never know if you didn't do your own research... or as I tried to tell tr... "homework."

My other favorite thing is when you post something that is "irrefutable" or destroys their argument... all of a sudden... Poof... they'er gone!

And, a little common sense wouldn't hurt.

Farmer's Wife: sour apples that need

to be tossed!

Exactly! Thus, the DNRR List. :-)

And, I'm just guessing here.. but since you don't live in town, you must purchase as much as you can each trip.. Right?

Call me silly, but I'm pretty sure that you can transport much more in your Suburban than you could in one of those Priuses... LOL

Geez Anne
I can't think of ANY good reasons why we'd need new electrical generating or transmitting facilities.
But let's not count the massive power failure of a few years ago that blacked out most of the power in the northeast when a single transformer went offline in Cleveland. Or was that a transmission line fell? Ok?
And let's also no count the fact that our population is growing by leaps and bounds and our present NATIONAL power grid is not only so hopelessly outdated, but way too small to supply the needed power to the entire country.

I also can't think of a single good reason why we should build new crude oil refineries to make gas for our ever growing population.

But just to be PC, lets not mention the fact that there hasn't been one built in the entire nation for over 30 years, in spite of the fact that with ever increasing regulations and demands for new grades of gasoline, not to mention all of the new vehicles on the rroads now, the ones we currently have will NEVER be able to keep up.

I could go on, but I'm sure you all grasp the point. The Democrats/liberal/leftist ENVIRO-WHACKOS say we don't need more sources of energy and we all know they're right. Don't we.

Anne, I second the
common sense, which is all too uncommon these days in our PC world.

Exactly Ann...
When I drive the 80 miles to the nearest large city, my old suburban is full when I come home. I also haul lots of equipment parts and during harvest several folks helping us from place to place.

Besides when that deer runs out in front of me, I am really glad I am not driving a tin can.

Call me crazy but some folks just don't get it!

"China is a sleeping giant. Let it sleep, for when it awakes it will shake the world". by Napoleon Bonaparte. Oh yes, America and its monsters the likes of Wal Mart, have done more than just waking up Communist China! Yes making it now Americas most favored and trusted Banker, as it owns most of the now Trillion dollar of America's National Debt, if my informations is correct. So, Mr. Borelli keep counseling Wal Mart to beware, in as much it may cause America to loose its mostr trusted and favored banker of all things. Yes, as America cannot even have a happy Christimas Celebration wihtout a Godless and Christian persecuting nation providing happiness for our Children in honor of child Jesus. Of course, Wal Mart and the likes are not actually ending up financing America's most scary militaty threat, as one even heard Rumsfeld's concern about it. Yes, or No? Is America actually financing indirectly China's military threat? Yes, while slavor labor like abounds in that nation while building toys for this Christian Nation under God.

Driveby posting
The best gas mileage car I know of.........Chevy Geo Metro 45-55 mpg...non hybrid let me repeat the name Chevrolet Metro. This year you can get hybrids in more gm and ford models then in a toyota. And GM and Ford are actually putting their hybrids in vehicles that the tech. is most useful, the suvs and pickups.

WalMart Should Improve Its Image Through
Ethical Practices.

Pandering after popularity because of Gore-Bull Warming hysteria will not raise the esteem of WalMart in the eyes of those who prefer to do business with ethical companies.

From its filthy parking lots, to its aggressive bargaining practices that triggered the proverbial "race for the bottom," to the sly way that they encourage their employees to be on the government dole, to the hiring of illegal aliens, WalMart has shown its true nature time and time again.

Should the government force companies to behave ethically?

We live in a free society, and because of that, we all have a duty to behave morally. Freedom without upstanding social character of the citizenry leads to decay.

We are now in a situation where corporations are behaving like street mongers from a third world country, and WalMart is leading the way.

Stores have been so driven to doing business with the cheapest possible source of product that they have looked the other way while Chinese manufacturers use substitute materials that prove to be toxic and otherwise hazardous.

Other stores have been discovered buying product from companies in India, who purchace children from their parents and use them, not as children who have jobs to help support their families, but as slaves who are worked hard under sweatshop conditions.

When these stores are caught, they make a show of being sorry, but they are only sorry they got caught.

Capitalism is the best system we have, but if we do not require the best of ethical and moral behavior of all in our society, American as we have known it will be only a memory.

A Broken Window 4 Peace in their Time
The alleged 'business opportunities' afforded by 'global warming,' given that no one can really quantify what if any definable measurable benefit any given measure would have, are of the 'broken window fallacy' variety anyway. They come about only because existing wealth was destroyed, so they're not gains.

Wal-Mart is targeted because its operations result in the generation of tons of harmless naturally occurring carbon dioxide (a.k.a. 'greenhouse gases') But how different would the CO2 generation of thousands of independent stores, & their wholesalers & common carrier truckers, be to serve the same markets? The same or more, but multi entities would do it.

This is all about the 'money men' who now own & run Wal-Mart, trying to reach a Neville Chamberlain accord with the green-commies & their elitist sponsors, hoping for peace-in-their-time as they're fixated on scoring a big bonus next quarter. The long term is next year, they might retire before the costs come due for payment, so who cares. As has been pointed out, Big Corp partners with totalitarian big government to use regulation & permitting to drive smaller competitors under, while doing the government elitist's bidding.

"global warming" is all about world totalitarian control of energy usage, which dooms Wal-Mart.

big companies/stupid
There are a lot of people still confused about the real outcome of AGW legislation on Wal-Mart. I guess that is understandable given articles like Borelli's in which he says Wal-Mart is killing itself with this CFR business. People need to go back and read my Sat 07:02 am post.

Wal-Mart will in fact lose sales if all the AGW legislation is passed, but only because the entire economy will tank. The fact is, ALL retailers will lose sales and by positioning itself now, Wal-Mart thinks that it will be able to be one of the "winners" in that political zero-sum game called "congressional influence" by the lobbyists and "bribes" by the rest of the country. By being one of the "winners" Wal-Mart will be able to position itself to take even more of the market share so that future earnings during the inevitable recovery will be even higher.

Remember folks, big companies did not get big by being stupid.

high cost domestic or low cost int'l?
The following statement by the author is the only economically unsound thought in the otherwise excellent column:

"A responsible company would first investigate the claims about man’s role in climate change and set a business course based on reality despite the prevailing notions of the liberal elite. Such an investigation would lead Wal-Mart to recognize the unproven relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and global warming. In this scenario, Wal-Mart would execute a completely different strategy: lobby for a national policy encouraging domestic energy exploration."

No person - from Cheney and Exxon to Chavez and OPEC - can sign away the benefits of free trade and pursuing comparative advantage. The best thing the U.S. can do is get out of the way of private capital going to its highest and best use. If ANWR and tar sands/oil shale are more economically viable than Orinoco and Gawar, so be it. But if not, let the best and lowest cost Btus rise to the surface!

The famous (or infamous) economist, Milton Friedman, was very precise on this subject.
A company's responsibility is to it's stockholders. If you jump on the global warming bandwagon then you are putting yourself in a position of increasing your costs on a theory that is very unproven and experts cannot agree on. This decreases profit which decreases share value thus costing your stockholders money. A company that volunteers to spend money on a project that has little economic return is a BAD company because it is not acting responsibly towards it's investors. This is waaaaay gonna bite them in the butt especially considering the new evidence and statements by eminent climatologists that call global warming a scam.
