Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

In Ann Coulter’s latest best selling book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, she notes that individuals who have suffered personal tragedy are shielded from criticism. Notwithstanding the controversy over the “The Jersey Girls”, her astute observation of special immunity rings true not only for these proponents of liberal dogma but also for CEOs who are disciples of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this instance, the Left welcomes these converts from capitalism with open arms - as long as they promote the social activist agenda.

CEOs of some of the largest companies have become the biggest advocates for expanding the responsibility of business beyond financial performance to include social and environmental goals. With the public outraged over executive compensation, and high profile cases of corporate fraud, CSR is an insurance policy for image-sensitive CEOs.

By paying an ideological and financial cover charge to social and environmental causes, CEOs gain admittance to Club CSR and enjoy a host of membership privileges. One major club benefit is protection from advocacy actions such as protests and boycotts wielded by anti-business activists.

Membership requires the creation of a public relations campaign or business strategy that serves the CSR agenda. By feeding into politically correct themes, these campaigns frequently distract the media and shareholders from failed business practices and poor stock performance. Being viewed as socially responsible buys great latitude for struggling CEOs. No longer considered selfish capitalists, these CEOs can finally gain access to elite social circles.

Global warming, the Holy Grail of CSR topics, provides the greatest cover for a distressed CEO. For example, under the leadership of John Browne, the giant energy company BP has enjoyed a free ride from activist attacks because of the company’s aggressive advertising campaign promoting global warming concerns, carbon footprints and alternative energy.

Meanwhile, BP’s record includes a deadly explosion at one of its refineries and a major oil pipeline leak in Alaska. Because of these incidents, the company is under investigation by an alphabet soup of federal and state agencies – EPA, OSHA, and DOJ – for possible law violations. More recently, the company has been accused of illegally controlling propane prices, which drove up cooking and heating costs for consumers – many of them poor.

Even though the company is responsible for the tragic loss of life, polluting the environment and potentially ripping off poor consumers, there is a deafening silence of criticism from social and environmental activists.

Instead, BP is heralded as an environmental leader for its position on climate change. For example, BP received the top score in a ranking of 100 Global Companies on Climate Change Strategies last March by CERES – a coaliton of organizations that are working to advance environmental stewardship by businesses.

Another global warming disciple is GE – the giant industrial, entertainment and financial conglomerate. Through its environmental public relations campaign – Ecomagination – the company touts its investments in alternative energy and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

GE is now partnered with the World Resources Institute – an environmental activist non-profit – in seeking national regulations to address global warming. By joining the global warming cult, GE’s CEO Jeff Immelt is enjoying the benefits of a capitalism convert – favorable media coverge for the company’s green strategy and protection from critical reporting on GE’s profitability.

Media scrunity of GE’s business would expose the fact that its share price has been flatlined ever since Immelt took the helm. Moreover, aggressive reporting would expose that GE’s pursuit of greenhouse gas regulations will negatively impact GE’s earnings because of the effect of higher energy prices on its business and the entire economy. But these details get lost in the fog of CSR. The excitement of a giant company taking a leadership role addressing global warming trumps reality.

Today, CSR gives CEOs immunity from criticism, allowing them to enjoy a peaceful and highly prosperous tenure. Until it’s recognized that company support for CSR initiatives is often a sign of a troubled business, CEOs will be eager participants. In the meantime, shareholders and consumers will be left paying the price.

GE
GE will make a ton of money off "Global Warming". Google "Boiling Water Reactor"

Reminds me of Jesse Jackson extortion
Pay to keep from being labelled. Haven't thought of it that way. Be interesting to follow the money on this one. I know Mr Borelli is just writing about influence, but where DOES the money go?

WTF is CSR?
I don't suppose our rocket scientist columnist could bother to explain what the acronym "CSR" stands for? Nah.

WTF is CSR?
I guess our rocket scientist columnist couldn't be bothered with explaining what "CSR" stands for.

Bull's eye ! ! !
Tom has got it exactly right, except for one thing. By adding 'joining the latest lefty scare hoax' to their portfolio, they increase their authority on the cheap, and insure their sinecure; at the expense of the shareholders, coustomers, employees and the public. At least a twofer.

CSR
Chetnikk

From the first paragraph: "...but also for CEOs who are disciples of corporate social responsibility."

Yes, he should have put 'CSR' in parentheses after; but, it was a pretty strong clue...

On another note, I wish he had been more forceful about the folly of trying to control Global Warming as useless; thereby, compounding the whole CSR nutsiness!

CSR (?)
Thanks, Tom, now I can spend all weekend trying to decipher the acronym "CSR". I could wax humoristically, but it's a serious problem. Do the CEO's and other captains of industry understand that capitalism made this country the best and strongest on the planet? Do they realize that socialism has never worked (unless poverty and oppression is the goal)? Global warming is a sham, the Piltdown man of socialism. Water and air have never been cleaner, there are more trees in this country than there were in the 19th century and our standard of living is so good that people die to sneak into the USA. CEO's never had it so good, but they are shooting themselves in the foot to be politically correct.

CEO's and CSR
Ubtil the market punishes these CEO's for their foolish misuse of corporate resources, it will continue. By "the market," I mean all the people who own stock selling the stock in the companies run by these losers who have forgotten what their jobs are. I have heard rumors of such stockholder revolts going on, but I am not sure if they are really happening.
The CSR-related groups do not buy a lot of stock; they just have more time and energy to put into their representation at the stockholder meetings. Ordinary Americans who are earning a living and trying to retire with dignity on something more than a government program do not hane all that free time or money.

CSR Redux
O.K., thanks to joel482, I know now that CSR stands for "corporate social responsibility". Whew, joel482 saved me the use of some of the few brain cells I have left.

Ms Conserv is correct
It is extortion and by giving in, these coporations only buy time, not forgiveness.

It is an endless cycle. XY Oil company is accused of contributing to all the ills of the world from the chicken pox to global warming. After a few years of weathering the abuse they start to cave on some issues, normally after the crazies have petitioned the government into making some law. They then set up wasteful departments to research and study things that have absolutely nothing to do with the business XY Oil originally went into but shut up the extortionists, for now. These programs cost money, XY Oil goes to Washington, "Look at the good work we are doing..." and before long, tax breaks. The lunatics then use the tax breaks for their next rallying cry, "Big Government Supports Big Oil". And the cycle begins again. The sad part is that no matter if these useless programs are subsidized by the government or not, we all eventually pay for them.

This year corporations are being beat up over global warming and spend millions to set up a front, little is actually done because in reality, what is to be done. Even the conspiracy theorist pushing global warming don't agree to what degree they believe it to be occuring, how fast, or if it is more pronounced from one region to another. I personally believe if there is global warming it can be linked to that secret UFO they have locked up in Area 51 that everyone knows about but no one is allowed to see.

Corruption Is The Key Factor
Follow the money, Follow the rules, unless it means actually losing, then all hell breaks loose. Deception, lies, and downright corruption is the key to losts of $$$$$, at any and all costs. Human life will be spared, blood will be spilled and anything remotely resembling true human nature and human compassion will be forever denied, unless it appointment, election or turnover time. I like so many people today feel as if I am in a nightmare not able to wake. Only a change of the hearts and minds of so many lost souls, will even come close to what being human is all about. I like so many others do'nt beleive a blastard thing, they say or claim unless it is money motivated. If money is involed you can be sure that they the corrupt wil rise from their graves. It like the night of the living dead. But then what do I know?????

Corporate suicide
CEOs that kowtow to the Liberal agenda of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) may get invited to the trendy parties and have nice things said about them by the Liberal press and lefty PC advocates, but they are cutting their own throats, killing off their investors and abandoning their employees.
A current example is Ford, whose CEO dedicated his company to "greenness" and combatting global warming. The news yesterday is that Ford will cut production by its largest percentage in the past 20 years and layoff thousands of workers indicates that kissing the feet of the left-wing anti-corporate advocates in this country is not a winning business strategy.

Who cares??
"Global Warming" is just one of the latest swings of "Global Alarmism", if I may coin a phrase. I was around and reading Time magazine in the 70's when I stood in line to buy gasoline wearing a parka, in Los Angeles. After all the Ice Age was returning! I dropped my subscription long ago. I also dropped the LA Times after they published a letter from some 200 'scientists' proclaiming "GW" is dooming our planet. [you can read GW as Global Warming OR George W, it is the same thing to them] Unfortunately they never posted the letter from 17,000 'scientists' who say GW cannot be traced to Man but is in fact a part of a natural cycle.

However the trend you see in CSR is the visible corporate executive who does not need or want unwarrented attention from the crazies of any stripe. Politics and business do not blend well in public as many have found. For example K-Mart is a shadow compared to Target and Wal Mart since K-Mart hired Rosie O'Donnel to spew her brand of gas.

Perhaps GE stock is flat because investors, like me, think kissing up to crazies is not the role my investments should be making. I'm not against nor do I oppose 'good causes' but I want the contribution to be made by me and to go where I choose. You'll have to trust me that I do donate annually as well as volunteer in community programs. It feels good to help.

K-Mart
Marc of CA,

My family and others that we know, dropped K-mart like a brick, because of their anti family stand in the eighties and continuing in the early nineties.

This was not a one issue stance. But a stance brought on by numerous comments, practices and a haughty attitude by K-mart.

K-mart did not respect conservatives, and informed conservatives replied back in like manner.

Found a good CSR Site
I too had to catch-up with Tom and his thought about CSR -- BTW: turns out to be Corporate Social Responsibility. Tom's excellent BP commentary is an example of a much larger problem. It is not only environment, global warming, etc., but rather an idelistic movement that has caused corporations to lose focus on their core business. There is a pretty good site that connects the effects of CSR on businesses. They seem to cover BP, GE, Goldman, and others. It's also a good source for news about these companies: http://www.freenterpriser.com.
