Terrorism issue breathes life into GOP

Poll
What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

President Bush and his GOP brethren in Congress have reason to celebrate this week. For the first time in what seems like a political eternity, their polling numbers are heading north.

According to a new USA Today/Gallup poll, Bush’s job approval has ticked up five points over the last month. At the same time Democrats, who two months ago were preferred over Republicans in a generic matchup by a staggering 16 points, now hold only a slim two point advantage.

Much of the movement for the GOP can be attributed to recent headlines about terrorism, including the successful thwarting of a massive, 9/11-style British-originated terror plot. Indeed, according to the poll President Bush’s approval on the issue of terrorism is higher than it has been in more than a year. White House advisors have always known this is the President’s strong suit and clearly intend to talk about the issue until they are blue in the face.

Shortly after authorities disrupted the British terror plot, a federal judge in Michigan provided the White House with more fodder by ruling President Bush’s Terrorist Surveillance Program unconstitutional. “I strongly disagree,” Bush told reporters. Referring to liberal civil liberties groups and numerous Democrats who hailed the decision as a victory, Bush said, “Those who herald this decision simply do not understand the nature of the world in which we live.” Later, the White House released a statement further making the point.

The thwarted British terror plot reminds the world that “terrorists are still plotting to attack our country and kill innocent people,” the statement says. “United States intelligence officials have confirmed that the program has helped stop terrorist attacks and saved American lives…The whole point is to detect and prevent terrorist attacks before they can be carried out. That's what the American people expect from their government, and it is the President's most solemn duty to ensure their protection.”

The administration’s firm conviction that the American people do in fact expect the President to use programs like TSP will only add to Bush’s, and his fellow congressional Republican’s, desire to pass a law ensuring that such programs are constitutional. Expect lawmakers to take that up as soon as Congress returns from its August recess. Indeed, even before this recent ruling congressional plans had been in place to act on legislation that would give the Terrorist Surveillance Program a congressional seal of approval, but now, conservatives in Congress have another incentive to act quickly, and they should.

James Carafano of The Heritage Foundation, an expert on Homeland Security and terrorism, recently argued that congress should do all in its power to give the President the tools he needs to successfully fight the war on terror. The successful foiling of the British terror plot “demonstrated that the U.S. needs tools like the Patriot Act and the National Security Agency’s intercept programs and that these measures can be applied without undermining civil liberties,” writes Carafano. “Providing additional authorities, such as those proposed in the Terrorism Surveillance Act of 2006, is a good way to strengthen the tools we already have.”

Spurred by successes in disrupting terror operations and perceived attacks from a liberal federal judiciary, congressional conservatives this fall will be eager to enact substantive legislation that will guarantee the administration has all the tools it needs.

It would be ridiculous to think that Republicans in Congress are not paying close attention to the politics of the issue as well. The USA Today/Gallup poll heartened Republicans. They’re no doubt be eager to watch Democrats -- who appear increasingly beholden to a liberal leftist cabal within their party -- squirm as they are made to cast tough votes on issues related to the long war on terrorism.

Immigration? Why? Who? Republicans?
Lydia writes:
Bush is relieved that the war is distracting the stupid republican rank and file from his efforts to destroy America through the nonviolent invasion by illegal squatters and importing cheap labor from overseas to replace American workers.

Why is Bush pushing hard to bring in illegals who will mostly vote democrat?
-------------------------------------
Because, he is a globalist like most Democrats. Remember that the democrats want even more open borders (watch what they do, not what they say on TV interviews) and 100-200 immigrants brought here "legally" if they have to but, still brought here.

Why are both parties supporting this wave of immigration and Democrats even more than Republicans? Social Security.

We have to keep workers to retirees at 3 to 1 or even more if we are to keep it solvent. With 77 million retiring we have an $84 trillion unfunded liability facing us with current longevity trends that mean retirees will draw on the entitlements for 35 years. While the "normal" life expectancy is based on the morality rate of every one, new studies of those now alive at 65 will live to 92 and those under and ready to retire soon (baby boomers, the 77 million) will live to be 100.

We have about 140 million workers. Subtract 77 million over the next couple of decades and add job growth the desire to have even more workers than 3 to 1 and you see why democrats want all the immigrants. Since Republicans are blocked from social security reform, they want them too. The American voter has spoken. Don't change social security even though only low wage workers get to count 90% (up to $606) of what they earn. Most of you that are reading this make more than $606 a month and you only get to count 32% of what you earn above that. That is why just 4% in the Thrift Savings Plan's bond funds would give you up to a couple thousand more a month than social security will with 12.4% of your earnings.

So, since voters want socialism we will give it to them and socialism means lots and lots of workers to fund social security and Medicare. COLA increases mean that every year, those entitlements will either rise several percent or, the seniors will lose buying power because "inflation" is under reported to keep the COLA increases lower. If we drop to even a 2 to 1 worker for retiree, think about what that means.

An average benefit check of $1,200 a month would mean each worker pays $600 a month just to cover the check. That means they have to make $4,800 a month, each, so that their 12.4% will withhold $600. And remember that only pays for the current retiree and puts nothing away for their own social security check. That is why even a 4 to 1 ratio is tough sledding. The only reason we don't have a problem already is the interest the trust fund receives on the trillions loaned to the general revenues that run our government. 11 times we haven't had enough to cover retiree checks and had to sell some of the bonds until a new tax increase restored the inflow to greater than outflow.

20 times the social security tax rate went up to "fix" social security and now it is "broke" again or will be by 2017. Not because the money is loaned out either. That interest on that loan is all that is keeping us afloat until 2017. It is going broke because we are living longer and drawing from the system for 20-30 years longer on average than the first retirees did if they even lived to retirement. The longer we live the more retirees there are for current workers to carry.

That is why FDR when he signed it into law intended for it to eventually be funded by each worker into his own annuity with disability protection. There was not to be any "current" worker funding retirees other than himself.

Will 100-200 immigrants fix social security? I doubt it. They will have to retire and if the same system is in effect that means 400-800 million workers will be needed to fund their retirement. But, hey, Look at it this way. Liberals will have saved social security without reforming it like those nasty conservatives want to do. What right does a worker have to fund his own retirement anyway. That's government's job to fund retirement, right?

GoodOnPaper
Very good point you make GoodOnPaper, sites such as moveon.org are very narrow minded and only have the ability to see one side of any issue. What needs to be remembered by all is the fact that both parties have contributed to the mess this country is currently in. It just so happens that the policies and thinking of the extreme left are so far out of whack they might as well all have their ACLU membership cards engraved onto their foreheads and move to Hollywood and live with Tom Cruise. The elected officials who are failing to support and enforce the current immigration laws were voted into office by both sides, and most need to be replaced this November. Remember you have the power of the vote, the politicians know this and it scares the hell out of them. Visit
