McCain Plays the Role of Indiana Jones

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

C.S. Lewis, if he’s watching from Heaven and waiting for the wildly popular return of Indiana Jones to come out on DVD, can only chuckle with the angels about what might have been if Harrison Ford had played “Prince Caspian” instead of the remarkably talented, perfectly convincing—but much lesser known—Ben Barnes.

Actually there are fair parallels between this box office battle and the recently-concluded political duel between presumptive Republican nominee John McCain and former candidate Mike Huckabee.

The former governor of Arkansas stormed out of the gate fast, winning Iowa a week before McCain won New Hampshire—and by an even larger margin. Caspian’s $55 million opening weekend was gold by Hollywood standards—a week before the reprisal of Ford’s role as the loveable adventurer more than doubled that gross before the Memorial Day Monday.

Huckabee’s humility, hopeful messages and self-deprecating humor are unmistakably rooted in his Christian beliefs, while McCain’s pro-life and traditional marriage positions could be viewed as politically expedient. Likewise, the unassuming Prince Caspian and the charming characters he surrounds himself with are unmistakably committed to the conquering of evil, while Indiana Jones seems committed only to the prize that awaits him at journey’s end.

As was the case eight years ago when McCain figured to be George W. Bush’s biggest nuisance en route to the Republican nomination, the Arizona senator remains a favorite among mainstream media. Likewise, a movie like “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (especially with Harrison Ford as this summer’s Hollywood god) is going to naturally appeal to entertainment reporters hell-bent on glamorizing the superficial while ignoring Christian-friendly film like “Prince Caspian.”

In a post-modern pop culture like ours, what hope has a movie for genuine critical acclaim when the most reliable fans will be church-goes hungry for a family-friendly film with neither foul language nor gratuitous violence? Indeed, what hope did Huckabee have in an almost endless campaign season wherein even a wayward hiccup can cause a negative news cycle complemented by countless hours of hyper-analysis?

The answer to both questions is the same: virtually none.

Like Huckabee’s, Prince Caspian’s charm and charisma are immediately contagious. Like McCain, Indiana Jones has had a long and successful run as a straight-talking underdog, capped off by one last hurrah.

Although the voice of Aslan the Lion belongs to Liam Neeson, there are no readily recognizable faces in Narnia. With the exception of Chuck Norris, the same was true of the Huckabee campaign.

Gov. Huckabee’s success this presidential cycle sprung from phenomenal grassroots support that may well have cost Mitt Romney the nomination. Huckabee’s determination in staying in the race was redoubled because of rock-solid Evangelical support, perhaps reminiscent of the likely continued box office success of “Caspian” in the face of relentless hype over Harrison Ford’s return to the big screen.

Just as the mainstream media seemed to shame Huckabee out of the Republican race weeks ago, the Hollywood press corps hopes to bury “Prince Caspian” in a wave of lukewarm reviews and the relentless regurgitation of shallow box office numbers.

At the end of the day, however, Hollywood’s bias against Christian-themed movies like “Caspian” is not the fault of Harrison Ford any more than the mainstream media’s distaste for the religious right is the fault of John McCain.

On my radio show recently, Huckabee made clear once again that he would enthusiastically accept an offer to be McCain’s running mate this summer. He was preparing to embark on a 34-year anniversary cruise to Alaska with his wife, Janet. During a commercial break in our studio that afternoon our casual conversation turned to family. “Without my wife and kids,” he said, “I’d go crazy.”

Planning to see Harrison Ford on opening night that very evening, it dawned on me: The man who has so brilliantly brought Indiana Jones to life had gone through a divorce to settle down with a millionaire (Calista Flockhart) and, by golly, the senator from Arizona had done the same thing.

Maybe the success of the latest adventures of Indiana Jones bodes well for the success of McCain in the fall, but part of me longs for a Prince Caspian. Maybe for VP? Too bad Caspian (Ben Barnes) is foreign born. That’s a ticket I could get behind.

Be A Maverick! No Votes For McCain!

The Stupid Party

The RNC wanted an amnesty candidate.

Don't vote for one.

Another amnesty will result in Democrat majorities for decades, or until they are supplanted by the La Raza Party, why doesn't the RNC know that? How stupid do you have to be to import voters for the opposition at the same time you alienate your own voters? Nominating any of the amnesty supporters is a losing proposition, we will not support them. If the GOP intends to surrender our sovereignty and abandon the rule of law, they will find in November 2008, that they still have their big money/cheap labor donors, but they do not have voters. GOP-RIP

Chuckles the clown
(Qweenmum's name for the huckster- love it)

Huck continues to show his true colors. Last week we learned he is an unabashed socialist, even though he swore for 6 months that he's a conservative - "honest!". The week before he joked about the assassination of Obama. He's nowhere near the actual VP list for good reason. He has the bad combination of being an ignorant fool on policy, and a loose cannon. His constant vulgar and petty comments wear thin.

McCain needs Romney for MI, CO, and NV. He already has the south - hence no Huck factor.

Huck is a charlatan, a liar and a pathetic joke. Rush is right, Huck never had a prayer for pres or VP.

I'm not so sure
About McCain and our state anyway. We are kinda funny about elitist snobs from somewhere else telling us how to run our campaigns.

Huckabee
Is rock solid with evangelicals?

That's a good one.

your choice...
When would you like Huckabee as prez, 2012, (like Reagan) or 2016, freed from McCain?

One of the dumbest columns... ever!

Movie analogies? How about "Dumber and Dumberer"?

Or a proposed (by me) remake: "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington And Chucks His Lunch"?

How about that spinning head in "The Exorcist"? One side's Obambi, the other side's McRINO.

Who the hell's this Tolo guy? He's dumber than a box of rocks.

NO HUCKABEEN FOR VP!

No way!!! With his BIG mouth he'd probably mouth-off and tell the Iranian president where he could stick something (flag pole, etc), and get the US blown up. I wanna live a few more decades. So PLEASE don't let Huckabeen anywhere near the White House!

Snakes..Why'd It Have to be Snakes?
I think Belloq would be a closer parallel to McCain, with conservatism as the golden treasure.

I honestly think Huckabee was just working in partnership for Mack, jumping in to siphon off, from any other candidate, those believers naive enough to look at his preacher cred & no further. I always thought he had no chance of winning & would just concede his delegates to Mack. He served his purpose & can be discarded. Huck as Mack's running mate is a rancid grease sauce for a plateful of manure.

What a stupid, rambling column about nothing. It's bad enough we have to navigate 100K frames of jumping flickering ads, restart browsers 2-3 x because of adservers balking & locking up our browsers, sifting thru hundreds of RINOgrams and please from yellowspines scared so spitless of Obama they'll take Mack, only to find poor confused is-he-not-awake-yet writing as well.

AWARD RECOGNITION
Oft-times in the course of world events, a few go unrecognized for their undying support and efforts in this most important Presidential election. For their determination and commitment to electing B. H. Obama, and for their relentless search for the "truth" about the EVIL McCain and Huckabee, it is with great pleasure that we award this trophy to PC, Queenie, Shelby, and others. Please accept this token with our sincerest regards. We present to you "The Single Digit Salute Award"
for your unrelenting efforts in delivering us Barack H. Obama. Thank you.

Communist vs Fascist? No thanks
If you want to blame someone for Obama's possible victory, you can blame those who actually vote for Obama, and recognize a big supporting role for those who helped engineer McCain's status as GOP "presumptive nominee" so early everybody but Paul bailed.

BTW, the convention hasn't been held yet, thus Mack's not actually the candidate.

You have no business blaming those who have expressed opposition to McCain & his nuttiness, & are dismayed at the GOP's strange slobbering willingness to do his bidding like so many hypnotized sheep ever since "McCain-Feingold." just because he has been all-but nominated, thereby further disgracing & discrediting the Republican Party, & rendering it redundant & irrelevant, you had no right to expect us to capitulate.

It is disingenuous & dangerously stupid (if you consider the opposition dangerous) to rely on a certain subset of voters to cave & turn tail to support a candidate who has betrayed them on critical issues, simply out of pantstinkling fear of the opponent. That seems to be the strategy here.

Who I don't support is 1 thing; I have no control over him/her. Who I affirmatively support & vote for is subject to certain criteria & standards, & I have no apologies to make for that.

If it were solely up to me, if I were the one swing vote, I'd gladly jam a stick in the spokes of the Crazy Talk Express & let the cowchips fall where they may. You can blame the one you see in the mirror for setting it up.

PC, Correct You Are, Sir
Romney: strengthens our hand in the West, puts MI strongly in play for us, serves up a bright star in economics for the stump, has the campaign funding connections, and is as close to a "kiss and make up with the conservative wing" VP choice as McCain could select. This is an IQ test for McCain and an average IQ score wins the day.

BTW: Huckabee has no conservative chops; he's a populist. (See William Jennings Bryan.)

Hackabee for VP? No thanks
I'm already disinclined to vote for McCain for President, and leaning strongly toward voting for Bob Barr on the Libertarian ticket. But if anything could close out the last remote possibility of my voting for McCain, and indeed persuade me to vote for Obama, it would be Mike Huckabee for VP. I didn't really like any of the Republican candidates except Ron Paul (and I'll admit even he has his flaws) but Huckabee was the only GOP hopeful I disliked even more than McCain.

Of course, I'm sure Huckabee, who recently declared that small-l libertarians like me are what's wrong with the Republican Party, would be happy to do without my unclean, unGodly vote. McCain probably feels the same. Better to lose a close election than to win it with the help of scum like me, right, guys?
