Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The other day I sought a respite from current events by re-reading some of the writings of 18th century British statesman Edmund Burke. But it was not nearly as big an escape as I had thought it would be.

When Burke wrote of his apprehension about "new power in new persons," I could not help think of the new powers that have been created by which a new President of the United States -- a man with zero experience in business -- can fire the head of General Motors and tell banks how to run their businesses.

Not only is Barack Obama new to the presidency, he is new to running any organization. One of Burke's fears was that "we may place our confidence in the virtue of those who have never been tried."

Neither eloquence nor zeal was a substitute for experience, according to Burke. He said, "eloquence may exist without a proportionate degree of wisdom." As for zeal, Burke said: "It is no excuse for presumptuous ignorance that it is directed by insolent passion."

The Obama administration's going back and forth on the question whether American intelligence agents who forced information out of captured terrorist leaders will be subjected to legal jeopardy, even though they were told at the time that what they were doing was not only legal but a service to the nation, came to mind when reading Burke's warning about the dangers of continuing to change the rules and values by which people lived.

Burke asked how we could expect a sense of honor to exist when "no man could know what would be the test of honour in a nation, continually varying the standard of its coin?"

The current drive to take from "the rich" for the benefit of others came to mind when reading Burke's warning against creating a situation where "any one description of citizens should be brought to regard any of the others as their proper prey."

He also warned that "those who attempt to level, never equalise." What they end up doing is concentrating power in their own hands-- and Burke saw such new powers as dangerous, even if they were used only sparingly at first.

He said, "the true danger is, when liberty is nibbled away, for expedients and by parts." He also said: "It is by lying dormant a long time, or being at first very rarely exercised, that arbitrary power steals upon a people."

People who don't like "the rich" or "big business" or the banks may be happy that President Obama is sticking it to them. But such arbitrary powers can be turned on anybody. As John Donne said: "Send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."

The Constitution of the United States set out to limit the powers of the federal government but judges have greatly eroded those limitations over the years and the dispensing of bailout money has allowed the Obama administration to exercise powers that the Constitution never gave them.

Edmund Burke understood that, no matter what form of government you had, in the end the character of those who wielded the powers of government was crucial. He said: "Constitute government how you please, infinitely the greater part of it must depend upon the exercise of the powers which are left at large to the prudence and uprightness of ministers of state."

He also said, "of all things, we ought to be the most concerned who and what sort of men they are that hold the trust of everything that is dear to us." He feared particularly the kind of man "whose whole importance has begun with his office, and is sure to end with it"-- the kind of man "who before he comes into power has no friends, or who coming into power is obliged to desert his friends." Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and others came to mind.

The biggest challenge to America -- and to the world -- today is the danger of Iran with nuclear weapons. President Obama is acting as if this is something he can finesse with talks or deals. Worse yet, he may think it is something we can live with.

Burke had something to say about things like that as well: "There is no safety for honest men, but by believing all possible evil of evil men, and by acting with promptitude, decision, and steadiness on that belief." Acting -- not talking.

Burke and Obama
Don't know what article some of you are reading. Sowell quotes John Donne in the following paragraph:
"People who don't like "the rich" or "big business" or the banks may be happy that President Obama is sticking it to them. But such arbitrary powers can be turned on anybody. As John Donne said: "Send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."
Perhaps you should go back and re-read!

Burke and Obama
Yes, this article is as concise and relevent as it is frightening because of the truth of it. And Peggy, your concern over Obama's foreign policy is "spot on."

tender mercies of the wicked are cruel
Thomas Sowell's parallels between Burke's words from another time and today's current climate in Washington with Obama was spot on. It reminded me of Roosevelt's miscalculation of Stalin at Yalta in February 1945. The Big Three (Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin) agreed to support democratic elections and government in all of the liberated nations of Europe. Stalin gave all the appropriate nods and smiles FDR wanted on the issue, but Roosevelt's miscalculation was in dealing with him as he would a party boss, not the tyrant he was. His Red Army was simultaneously destroying democratic forces in eastern Europe, setting up puppet governments. Nazi control was replaced with Communist control. Roosevelt was not entirely ignorant of the gulf between Soviet policy and practice, but because of Stalin's agreement to join the war against Japan after Germany was defeated, he didn't press the issue.

One has to wonder if Obama's handshakes and "talks" with tyrants are likely to be a similar miscalculation.

I disagree with Dr. Sowell
. . . about empathy in general and especially in relation to justice.

"Empathy" is a broad word, like Justice Potter Stewart said about hard core porn: we know it when we see it. I memorably encountered it at age 12 in 1956, during parents' night at my school.

After my mother and I ate in the school cafeteria and were on our way to meet my teachers, she noticed that a few African-American children and adults were just sitting down with their trays.

She looked across the room at them and said: "Isn't it sad? They came late, so the White people wouldn't have to eat with them." We lived in a fairly humane, but still mostly segregated, part the Old South, and my mother was a Southern woman, descended on her mother's side from a Confederate soldier.

But she could put herself and me in the position of those descended from slaves, and understand their pain, humiliation, and, yes, their anger, at being treated as inferior. That's empathy, expressed by a just woman.

What's empathy to Dr. Sowell? One of his "random thoughts" is how he dislikes beggars.
If he fancies himself a good Christian, perhaps he should add to his reading Jesus' parable of Lazarus and the rich man.

Next: empathy in the legal profession.

I disagree with Dr. Sowell
Before I go into detail on this subject, as requested by a couple of you, I want to be sure that my post will get on the board. I did the first installment a couple of hours ago, and it hasn't shown up. Before I start over again, I want to post something short as a test.

To Old Blue
Yr remark about soft tyrannies leading to hard tyrannies is truly depressing. I will blame it all on the H.A.D. (the hypnotised and duped) who voted in this president. To my way of thinking, these irresponsible, naive voters (who were warned over and over of the dangers of what they were doing) have unpatriotically led us to the beginnings of a nightmare.

Correcting Errors
Even the esteemed Dr. Sowell occasionally misquotes. It was not Robert Burns who talked about the bell tolling, and it was not in the 18th century that those words were first written. The real author was John Donne, who wrote in the 17th century: "The death of any man diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

In considering Burke, one might also consider Burke's contemporary, William Pitt (The Younger), who said this: "Necessity is the plea for every enfringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

And as America sinks into a "soft tyranny," I will add one idea of my own. Soft tyrannies always lead to hard tyrannies. There are no exceptions in all of history.

Dr Sowell
For me it does not matter who said the words about "the bells tolling" - although I know the difference - for in a generation, the dumbing down our culture will make such questions beyond anyone's caring. We won't be smart enough to ask "Who is John Galt?" There may be a few left, who will ask "where did it all go?" in reference to our republic. The usurpation of all our freedoms is truly frightening!

John Donne
Great Article on Burke, but the bell toll reference was written by John Donne in his Meditation XVII.

K, BUT:
But for the first time in memory, Sol Invictus was right. That was John Donne's poem.

The first time in memory I see Thomas Sowell make a mis-step. Let's not sign his paycheck, Sol?

oh, no! Oh, well

I thought those words were by John Donne. (???)

Shucks. Go figure.

It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the AMERICAN DECENT INTO MARXISM IS HAPPENING WITH BREATH TAKING SPEED, AGAINST THE BACK DROP OF A PASSIVE, HAPLESS SHEEPLE, EXCUSE ME DEAR READER, I MEANT PEOPLE.

True, the situation has been well prepared on and off for the past century, especially the past twenty years. The initial testing grounds was conducted upon our Holy Russia and a bloody test it was. But we Russians would not just roll over and give up our freedoms and our souls, no matter how much money Wall Street poured into the fists of the Marxists.

Those lessons were taken and used to properly prepare the American populace for the surrender of their freedoms and souls, to the whims of their elites and betters.

FIRST, THE POPULATION WAS DUMBED DOWN THROUGH A POLITICIZED AND SUBSTANDARD EDUCATION SYSTEM BASED ON POP CULTURE, RATHER THEN THE CLASSICS. Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then the drama in DC that directly affects their lives. THEY CARE MORE FOR THEIR "RIGHT" TO CHOKE DOWN A MCDONALDS BURGER OR A BURGER KING BURGER THAN FOR THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND LECTURE US ABOUT OUR RIGHTS AND ABOUT OUR "DEMOCRACY". PRIDE BLIND THE FOOLISH.

THE MIDDLE FINGER
It is incredible the way our young are being sucked into grunge and lies...useful idiots...

I had a whole car load of young males pass from behind me and open their window and scream at me while they brandished their middle finger in my face.

I just smiled...I only had written in large ORANGE letters on my back window:

THIS GOVERNMENT: OUR HEALTHCARE? ASK ENGLAND!

Robert: It's called "extortion."

Per Judge A. Napolitano:
"This person runs a bank that's worth about $250 billion, it has no subprime loans, it has no bad debts, wasn't involved in credit default swaps, it didn't need any money.

It didn't ask for the money and didn't want it.

The FDIC with Treasury backing - officials from both the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Treasury said IF YOU DON'T TAKE THIS MONEY, WE WILL CONDUCT A MULTI-YEAR PUBLIC AUDIT OF YOU.

"Though the bank was solvent, as Judge Napolitano explained, fighting the government on the terms wasn't worth in the final cost-benefit analysis and the bank's board decided to accept bailout money, despite the protests of that bank's head and having the government become part-owner of the bank.

"It would cost them millions in employee time to give the government the documents it wanted, it would cost terrible publicity. The terrible publicity and that would mean a loss of business," Napolitano continued. "He begged his board of directors to let him tell the Feds to go take a hike. The board caved.

"He was forced - the board was forced to issue a class of stock just for the federal government. The federal government owns 2 percent of this huge bank. As a result of that minority ownership, they now want to control salaries. They want to see his books and they want to tell him who he can do business with.

"But as Napolitano explained, the tactic the government employed was nothing short of extortion, under its legal definition. And, as a consequence of the government having a stake in the bank, it is susceptible to having the government dictate business decisions and employee compensation."

Robert... MORE! "How banks were bullied

into making bad loans' Community activists' used pressure tactics to secure high-risk mortgages"

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=94031

Bruce Marks, head of the NACA

"WASHINGTON – Using tools provided by the federal Community Reinvestment Act, community organizers led by a self-described "banking terrorist" applied bullying tactics to secure high-risk mortgages and to shake down lending institutions for billions of dollars – actions that likely contributed to the "mortgage meltdown" that triggered the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

"That's the substance of a new report by the Capital Research Center on the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America headed by Bruce Marks.

"'Time and again, NACA has combined the street tactics of protest and demonstration with public policy tools such as the Community Reinvestment Act to pressure banks into expanding their operations in poor neighborhoods,' says the report authored by David Hogberg. 'NACA typically extracts self-serving concessions from banks, forcing them to provide it with funds that it then uses to make mortgage loans to low-income borrowers. NACA rolls the fees it earns servicing these loans back into its campaign of bullying banks.'

"In 2007, the year before the crash, NACA obtained $10 billion in bank commitments for its own loan commitments with what the group admits were aggressive, hounding20intimidation tactics.

"'NACA has been accused of being overly aggressive and personal," explains the group's website. "NACA wears this as a badge of honor, leaving no stone unturned and often hounding CEOs from their shareholder meetings to their homes. The rationale is simple: lenders have a personal and often devastating impact on the lives of the people who they refuse to provide affordable credit to or take advantage of through predatory loans and scams.'"

Robert: Wrong!
Regulators Shut 2 "Failed" IL Banks

"Regulators on Friday shut down two more banks, boosting the number of federally insured bank failures this year to 36.

The latest banks seized were Strategic Capital Bank and Citizens National bank, both in Illinois. The Federal Deposit Insurance

Corp. will continue to insure regular deposit accounts of up to $250,000 at both banks.

"The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's banking division took over Strategic Capital Bank, based in Champaign, Ill., while the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency took control of Citizens National Bank, based in Macomb, Ill. The FDIC was appointed receiver of both banks."

Perhaps you'd like to explain why the govt closed these banks that were mot failing...

Obama Helping Banks
It is silly to say that Obama is "sticking it to the banks". Hello! They are bankrupt due to their own stupidity and he is trying to help.

I happen to think Obama is misguided in this thinking and it would be better to let them go under.

But the banks brought this on themselves. Obama is just trying to get them back on their feet.

What does Robert know?
He knows hate
He knows mockery
He knows stupidity
He knows ignorance
He knows rudeness
He knows how to be a fool
He knows nothing worth sharing or owning

"There is no safety for honest men,
Dr Sowell, just how should we act upon our belief that Obama is as evil as any despot in history, and we believe him capable of ultimate evil?

No sense to arguing with Robert, nor in trying to correct him.
he is as unteachable as a box of rocks.

Mt 6:22 -
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

Singleness of mind erases all confusion.
What the mind singles out depends on where he is looking with the eye.

In looking over all men in a singleness of mind to see Jesus Christ is the Light of the World, he is enlightened and made whole.
Not by my own faith, but by the faith of Jesus Christ and my faith in His faith.

Robert, you are one of the most confused posters on TH.

The judgments you place on others is on you.

To say you are an idiot is from the Light of Jesus Christ who has exposed us all and left no place to bury or hide our ignorance and hate you are completely full of.

It takes hatred to do what you and the other like minded "liberals" do on TH every day.
You come and offer mockery and insults as that is all you have to offer.

Only you have the power to stop being such a moron as you show yourself to be.

I never once have gone to a "liberal" or democrat site and insulted or mocked a single poster.

Only those filled with hate and mockery can do it as you do here every day.

You are a fool and not a brother

Sticking It To The Banks
I am afraid Mr. Sowell is daft. Obama is not "sticking it to the banks". They have essentially got broke with no help from anyone. Mr. Obama is extending the banks a lifeline in the form billions in loans. Without these loans, most of our major banks would literally go out of business because they are insolvent.

I personally would rather see the banks go bankrupt. Capital would reform and new and better banks would rise up. That is how it is suppose to work when businesses fail. But it is silly to describe Obama as a subjugator and tormentor of the banks.

EVERYONE knows Rainbow IQ29

I agree---
With all the conservative posts on this thread that praise the wisdom of Dr. Sowell. I saw him on Glen Beck and Hannity and hope that he will be on more often. His wisdom is great, as the thoughtful conservatives posts here on this thread confirm.
It also appears more often now that DingleBarry's puppet masters have him under cruise control now. Wake up America!!

CKA in Red State USA
Its impossible to reason with the poster known as Robert.

Waste of time to reach out to him

Robert
You have never contributed a single post I ever read worth an ounce of spit

Go ahead, Robert, and ridicule...
It fits the typical adolescent derision you and your tribe practice so well.

As it also shows your all's ignorance.

There is, as you appear not to know, and always has been and always will be a difference between the GOP and conservatives.

But just keep on believing there isn't.

I urge you to do so.

BTW: Like you, I used to laugh at, mock, ridicule those that believed in God -- and I do not mean Allah -- especially God the Son Jesus.

You bet, even mocked them to their face. Called them profane names.

As also Was far left of the political center. Even have the stain on my conscience of voting for Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton the first time, and, this really stings, John Kerry and Teddy Kennedy.

But things change.

Then one day, or rather in one very long season of my life, I found out differently, at least about Adonai Jehovah.

Maybe you will have such an epiphany. Maybe you'll also survive the circumstances that led to it.

But, then, maybe you won't and won't.

Either way, it'll largely be your choice.

Even so, I do hope you find and establish a relationship with the Christ while you still can.

BTW: The GOP was in trouble and remains in trouble, with or without Christians who are either Catholic or Protestant.

CKA, you mentioned princes
And it refreshed my memory of something Solomon said about princes.

"For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof"

America is full of princes of transgression against the laws of God and nature.

"but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged."

Unless we find this man real quick, the transgressors will come to the fullness of time and we become another 1940's Germany.
Or Russia, or Cuba.

Ec 10:16 -
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

That's every day any people look to a "prince" and not to God.

Ps 146:3 -
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

the God squad
One finds both belief and disbelief at the lowest AND the highest reaches of human intelligence.

I find that I can respect a flippant unbeliever no more and NO LESS than I can respect one who parrots mindlessly his earliest Sunday School memories. Neither is doing any useful thinking, but both are potentially greater than they know.

Something you said, talentscout...
First, thanks for that "Any man . . ." post today.

You said, "I am betting my life on Jesus Christ being the WAY and Obama is the path to hell."

My bet, too, re: Christ Jesus being THE way.

As for Obama?

As he currently appears to be configured intellectually, ideologically and spiritually, if he’s not a guide on the path to hell, he’s certainly on that path.

But, you know, Obama presents a great example: good versus evil, true deception, double-mindedness, unintended consequences, foolishness, lack of wisdom--and a perfect example of a prince of the earth in which no one should put their faith.

By his example, I’m also reminded that, as God's Word says, the rain falls on the just and unjust, and the sun shines on the good and bad.

I do pray and continue to pray for Obama, his family and his administration. That God will truly be merciful and save their souls. And, yes, protect them from harm.

But regardless of how Obama and his administration -- as well as Congress -- behave, the Lord God's still in the boat with us, if we let Him be. Actually, He is the boat. And, much to the chagrin of moral agnostics, moral relativists, situational ethicists and atheists, He's God and we're not.

From personal experience, I also know that in the midst of hell and turmoil, He is peace itself, that very present help in times of trouble..

God's richest blessings and peace and protection to you and your family.

Dr Sowell writes:
"Not only is Barack Obama new to the presidency, he is new to running any organization. One of Burke's fears was that "we may place our confidence in the virtue of those who have never been tried."
======================

One thing Obama has said I agree with.

White Americans are a bunch of dumb MF-ers.

He was caught on tape wispering this to Joe Biden, and telling Biden he was included.

Which is true.
The ones supporting Obama do not even grasp the contempt this arrogant fool Obama has for them as well as me and others.

A liar has nothing but contempt for the people or person who swallows his bs.

This man is full of contempt for all things American and the fools believe his contempt is love for them.
Idiots

Everything has a cost
To love someone or some idea is the most expensive items up for purchase.

The cost of love is the most dear.
For everyone who dares to love another opens his own heart up to pain and disappointment.
You will pay through suffering for every ounce of love you give to another person in this world.

Its a law of nature and natures God.
Love is not cheap, nor is LIBERTY.

Liberty is purchased by blood and is the dew of heaven for the nation that holds it sacred.

Once Liberty is given up in trade for any other item such as security, that nations looses both liberty and security as the gift the immorality of such unwise decisions bring.

This is the cost for all the immorality going on in America today.
The immorality of the times has corrupted the US Government and the men who wield its power.

This was the situation in the British Colonies under King George the III.

It cost blood to throw that tyrant out of power, and America will not escape the price heaven has placed on its GIFT OF LIBERTY.

We are headed for much trouble due to imbeciles and fools that have become corrupted through their own immorality that lies and fraud will bring.

Everything has a price, and there is a price for the immorality of America today.

Mt 24:43 -
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

Sleep on America, the thief is in the house and taking your liberty away

Joel-De Oppresso Liber--re readings list
Am tied up at the moment (duties to family) but will get back to you. I promise not to insult your intelligence. At my age (66 last Monday), I can't afford to spend much reading time on mind candy or muddled political screeds.

Only--Black Rednecks and White Liberals--a collection of much longer essays by Sowell--is a good, liberating read--especially the essay "Are Jews Generic?" which explains much of the mindless anti-Jewish sentiment that currently seems especially strong in France and in the lib culture in the U.S.

The Good News.......
As Robert Burns said: "Send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."

The Bad News: Some attribute that to John Donne.

If you want to see the future..
look at the writings of thinkers like Burke, Aristotle, Adam Smith, the Federalists. The Founders understood the moral shortcomings of man and drew up the best form of government in history through our Constitution. Unfortunately, Dems and some Repubs, as willing accomplices, are destroying the system that made us the greatest country in the history of the world. What is so baffling is they are "sold" on a form of government (socialism) that, by every measure, can be seen as an abject failure for those unfortunate enough to live under its oppressive tentacles.

We need to smash this Government
Down to its real size in what it is designed to do.

No man will ever come up with a better Government than the one already given since 1776.

Only enemies of all HONOR AND TRUTH seek to change this Government.
And this is what America is faced with today.
The very enemies of the American System of Government have gained positions of power THROUGH FRAUD.

Divine Justice is here
Many ignorant among us today who are blind to the Justice now being executed on America.

There is truth, and there is wisdom from on High.
It cannot be abolished by the US Congress.
It cannot be Amended by the US Constitution.
It can only be Ratified by each and every individual on the earth.

Government has no effect on the Laws of Nature.
The US Supreme Court is Judged by the Laws of Nature.

Wise men or fools have no say what Divine Justice has already determined for all men.

No matter how high a person rises, he is under the Laws of God.

And God has made His Judgments known to all men.

Ignore the Divine Laws at your own peril.
The Judgment already given are unimpeachable and the sentence unmovable.

The ETERNAL PRINCIPLES this nation was founded in can only be ignored for a time until the day the ignorance produces its ripened fruit with the severity only nature can bring.

America has departed and ignored the eternal principles of self government and accepted the idea there is a short cut for a plumb line, and none exist.

There is no such a thing as a short cut on a straight line.
Fools seek one anyway and spend their days in vanity of self love and admiration.

This is what is "leading" American Government today.

Genuine idiots of the Blue Ribbon Class of fame

I hate this saying
I despise it and I loathe it.
Its an abomination of stupidity and preached by morons and fools.

"level the playing field".

LIFE IS NO GAME!
No man has such power!

He is a fool for thinking he can level anything from his own crooked and twisted little mind.
Only a fool thinks of himself as wise.
Only a fool thinks of himself as intelligent.
Only a fool makes promises he is incapable of delivering.

Its like the old Indian who said of this Government.

"they made us many promises but just kept one.
They promised to take our land"

Same thing for all of us in every promise made by a lying conniving politician.

He will keep one promise, and that is the one he pormises he intends to be a TAKER.
Goverment is takers, NOT GIVERS

Joel-De Oppresso Liber
You are no doubt tired this morning, but your thoughts are always clear.
Honest and down to earth.
God Bless you my friend

Any man
Who will not give 100 percent of himself to his wife and family will leave an opening for an unhappy family from all the enemies of unhappiness.

One person has more to give than every government or bank has to give in this world.

One person has more riches than all the gold and silver on this earth.

He has a loving kindness in a living, thinking, caring quality with an immediate source if he applies for such riches from the Creator FIRST.

He must be enriched himself before he can give these riches that only God possess's first.

If he is not honest or caring himself, its impossible for him to give this to another when he does not have it to begin with.

What I am speaking of can be seen in how people are looking to Obama to care for them and their needs, their problems and the man does not have an iota of power to give them the aide they seek.

He does not care for their problems except to acknowledge their problems for his own aggrandizement.

This man has proven he does not care about anyone but himself and his agenda in countless ways but blatantly in the life of his very own flesh and blood brother.
And his very own flesh and blood aunt.

He has the opportunity the money and the power to have helped both and has not and will not.

But people still place faith in this man through faith in his promises.

No different than a Christian does who places his faith in Jesus Christ and His promises.

I am betting my life on Jesus Christ being the WAY and Obama is the path to hell

I love your comments, refreshing, honest and thoughtful.

quote:
Liberal=less free
Conservative=more free

But the libs CLAIM the opposite, and thus they continue to fry in their own intellectual fat.

Especially this line:
"fry in their own intellectual fat"

Halleulueyah, so well said.

We need less "turgidity" and more clear speaking.
Just simple down to earth honesty.

Like Abe Lincoln is said to have put it in such a simple conclusion for a basis of all policy.

"honesty is the best policy"

There is no genius to false statements.

All politics is about image, NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE.

Politics are the weapons of liars, thieves, crooks and con men, and it appeals to ignorance.

An educated population would hang the bastards in Washington DC and the Federal Reserve Banking System that is ripping the country off and enriching themselves.

And the people kiss their butts and praise them for it

Quotes and Philosophy
Are useless unless they are explored in depth.

Like the wisdom of this.

Burke said:

"those who attempt to level, never equalise."

Now lets identify all who "ATTEMPT" to "level" the "playing" field.

This is the most ignorant and stupid philosophy of the day.

"level the playing field".

Nature does it best and fools try and out smart nature.
What we have today is FOOLS are in charge of the Government

Gosh, I didn't think I was being all that obscure--at least not obscure like Wallace Stevens or Ezra Pound or Oswald Spengler (whose Decline of the West I have not read but am assured is exceedingly turgid) at their worst. Basically, I was saying that you DON'T sound as if you're caught in the sort of intellectual lobster trap or strait jacket or Black Hole of Calcutta that nearly all of the troll-libs and a tiny handful of the reactionaries posting here seem to have got themselves into.

The more I read the postings, the more I feel that the following equations are accurate:

Liberal=less free
Conservative=more free

But the libs CLAIM the opposite, and thus they continue to fry in their own intellectual fat.

By thinking they know it all, they shut themselves off from further inquiry, seemingly not realizing that on every subject there is ALWAYS far more that is unknown than known, which is why a "constrained vision" is both more intellectually honest and more likely to be consistent with genuine human freedom. A Conflict of Visions, which elaborates all this in detail, is Sowell's personal favorite of all his many books and my favorite of his books that i have read.

Have you seen his short essay, "Marxism is Global Con Job"? It's a beauty.

Transparent enough, friend?

This is like that saying for married
Couples.

Burke said:

"those who attempt to level, never equalise."

Often heard is the idea that marriage is a 50/50 deal.

Which is nothing more than a proposition that induces arguments, hardly solves conflict.
It creates conflicts as there will never be any agreement where the balance is.

Or it creates an accounting of details to use for measurement to decide what was fair and 50 percent give or take.

Not a solution at all, its a principle that insures conflict of interest.

The only way a marriage or any solid relationship will work is each give 100 percent, not 1/2.

1/2 is division, and this is what is happening to America in trying to force "fairness" giving power to some person over another is the opposite of fairness.

The very language coming from DC is the language of division.
They know this and use it from a cunning mind to divide and conquer.

If there is no Unity in Washington DC, there can be no unity in America.

If there is no fairness in Washington DC, there can be no fairness in America.

The more they do to create fairness, the less fair it becomes

John Donne, not Richard Burns
Great column, as always, just want to mention that the 'send not to ask for whom the bell tolls' quote is from John Donne's sonnet that begins No man is an island.

Joel-De Oppresso Liber
Unlike you, I don't read anywhere near all the posts on TH, but I read enough of them to discern that the "unconstrained vision" (as Thomas Sowell puts it in A Conflict of Visions) of many on the left of center and a few on the right is an intellectual lobster trap. Once in, people are seemingly confined with no way of escape. It seems to be a contradiction that liberalism (which should mean freethinking) is so bound up with a stultifying 19th century Marxist ideology that 18th century thinkers like Smith, Burke, Madison, et. al. seem incredibly "liberated" by comparison.

Reminds me of a brief comment by C.S. Lewis in Surprised by Joy. The night he gave up his "freethinking" and became "the most reluctant convert in England," he felt at one and the same time deeply compelled and yet more free than ever before. In this sense, and in this sense only, he might have agreed with the English Socialist government of Orwell's 1984 that "Freedom is Slavery."

There is complexity here that not everyone is willing or able to grapple with, but it's the only path to a genuinely realistic view of international politics and economics. Sowell is one of the seers. I think Charen is too, which is why she makes the Marxists say such crazy things about the U.S. and Israel, the two countries that have done more than perhaps any others in the twentieth century to prevent the world from falling into complete tyranny and/or chaos

Thanks Again!

Dr. Sowell for telling the world some things real and true. Saw you on Glen Beck's show on Thursday.
Looking forward to seeing you next week there, too.

It is comforting to see from some of these responses that I'm not alone in believing that Obama is more concerned about the Islamic Nations than America's needs.
Have you counted how many Islamic Nations he is going to next week?
We can not enable Iran to continue to arm themselves with nuclear power.
Apparently, all we are going to do with North
Korea is apply more sanctions. WHY?
The only way one can make sense out of these and other decisions Obama is making, is to
also understand that he is a Moslem.
He is making decisions like he wants us to fail.
I agree we need to wake up America.

The bell
Excellent column, Dr. Sowell, but the bell tolled first from the pen of John Donne, of the 17th century.

Joel-De Opressor Liber
Your concept of state-level assertion of Constitutional powers is interesting, but flawed from the stand point of practical implementation. The curent crop politicians will not even consider it. Only drastic voter revolt aginst incumbents would make such a move possible. In such a case, it might not be necessary, since such a revolt would presumably put strict constructionists in office who would return to constitutional government. Its all highly unlikely. On the other hand, the last year of American politics has been one of continuous boggle and shock. Who knows what is next?

True Conservative Heroes
Edmund Burke and Adam Smith are two of the greatest men that have ever lived. Coincidentally
they both lived in 18th century England and I'm certain they influenced both our Constitution and declaration Of Independence.

Mr Sowell ... we have reading tastes
I have always held dear to heart the quote, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

Just a reminder that we must be ever vigilant, sir.

Why are you here then?
Mike:

You wrote, "...neither you nor any of your kindred spirits...have any interest in my opinions or the 42 years of study and experience upon which they are based."

How do you know that? It is always easier to
to reject your opponent's position 'pre factum' (before they are rendered) than actually addressing them. Neither do we need your resume; your arguments stand or fall on their merits, not your credentials (impressive though they may be).

"If I thought I might change anyone's mind here, I could give you over a hundred examples of "conservative" judicial bias... Nobody here has the kind of interest in my arguments that I have in all of yours."

Again, an a priori dismissal of our point of view. Those 100 examples? Write a column about them; I'd read it - but first you have to write it!

"I can eviscerate Thomas Sowell in any discussion of judicial policy, law enforcement, or intelligence gathering, just as he could skewer me if our topic were economics."

My, you are full of bluster, aren't you? The proof as they say, is in the pudding. If you are such hot stuff, climb into the ring, and make your case, and then be judged.

My last point is this: why are you here, on this website, if not to debate back-and-forth with others? Telling us all how great you are, but declining to participate is pointless. Talk is cheap, as you may know, and that's all you've done so far. At least Dr. Sowell has the integrity anc courage to make his case in public, in full view of those with whom he disagrees. So far, you do not.

THE AGE OF WISDOM
I believed the age of wisdom had died until I started reading Dr. Sowell. Our society needs more men with reason and wisdom to guide our youth to learn to think and question.

Returning to a quote made by Daniel Webster, another great orator, to the Senate, in 1830 when this country was divided on states rights:

"I have not coolly weighed the chances of preserving liberty, when the bonds that unite us together shall be broken asunder. I have not accustomed myself to hang over the precipice of disunion, to whether, with my short sight, I can fathom the depth of the abyss below; nor could I regard him (the president) as a safe counselor in the affairs of this Government, whose thoughts should be mainly bent on considering, not how the Union should be best preserved, but how tolerable might be the condition of the People when it shall be destroyed."

Other words of widsom regarding the state of our Republic 179 years ago.

Joel
PART 2

It is because we have the POWER in several ways you fail to mention in your posts: Before the Senate was directly elected by the people the voice of the people in the states was more direct. Our state legislatures elected the Senator to send to DC. We also have the right to vote for our state and national Reps and now Senators. Then we the people have the ultimate power---- IN THE JURY! Remember, juries at the time of our founding sat on Petit and Grand juries. They had the right to hear evidence, given under oath or affirmation, and to summon one to answer for charges which THEY decided were merited. Then it was the common jury that ruled on the LAW as well as the facts of the case. If they found the law UNCONSTITUTIONAL or the charge improperly applied it was their right to "nullify". They did not nullify their verdict---- they nullified the law! They did this by refusing to render a verdict or by rendering a verdict of not guilty. The modern citizen has no idea of the power they have in the jury; they have been railroaded by judges for decades as the judge will not tell the jury of their rights. In fact, modern judges will toss you if you deny that you will obey only his instructions.

Joel, it is THE PEOPLE who decide what laws are unconstitutional! The SCOTUS doesn't have that power and it can't go back to the state. They cannot be a referee in their own case!

Joel-De Oppresso Liber
PART 1

Do you ever read the posts of others? I see you do a lot of cut and paste of many of your messages and I understand why. When you have a great point to make about gubmint out of control you don't need to rehash your core principles. A little tweaking to the subject at hand is all you need. However, you continue to assert that the states retain all right to decide what is Constitutional. In that case you have a tug of war between the states and the federal government--- a never ending battle that could only lead to succession or civil war should the parties not agree. Will the SCOTUS be locked in a perpetual battle with the SC's of the states? You are missing something KEY here. In a democratic Republic We the People are the sovereigns. For a moment just ignore the falacy about the three branches of government as taught in schools. Instead think of the three POWERS in SELF government: the Fed, the States, and The People. The Constitution provided for voice of the People in the House, the voice of the States in the Senate, and the whole of the fed in the Supreme Court/Executive. The People (as a whole)and the States make the laws in the House and Senate; the SCOTUS and President are charged with enforcing the laws (police powers). Notice how the INDIVIDUAL citizen's voice doesn't have a place here?

Constsitutional thoughts.
Joel: you are absolutely right about the Constitution but going back in history, Lincoln was a great usurper of the Constitution and later Presidents have followed his example and today we have the greatest abuse of Executive Power in the history of this country. Professor Sowell is right on the money with his look at yesteryear. As has been said many times, "Those who ignore the lessons taught by history, are bound to repeat them.'\

Mike
If my last post is more than you are willing to do, you could instead give us one or two examples of the "conservative" judicial bias that you say you've seen.

You wrote, "Nobody here has the kind of interest in my arguments that I have in all of yours." Well, I do. Please share with me.

Mike
Nice to hear you "can eviscerate Thomas Sowell in any discussion of judicial policy". Maybe you could humor us here by explaining just ONE POINT where you disagree with Dr. Sowell.

Not 1-3 sentences each on 20 points. Your last post was four full paragraphs. Please give us 3-4 paragraphs on ONE POINT and explain (a) what your position is (b) how it's different from his and (c) why you believe he is wrong.

We'll be waiting.

Matt
I keep my posts short, because neither you nor any of your kindred spirits on this forum have any interest in my opinions or the 42 years of study and experience upon which they are based.

If I thought I might change anyone's mind here, I could give you over a hundred examples of "conservative" judicial bias that I've seen in just the past 2 or 3 years. Nobody here has the kind of interest in my arguments that I have in all of yours.

For the record, I'm not a "typical lefty," but a moderately conservative practicing Christian, Army Vet (82d Airborne, 68-70), former federal prosecutor (74-77), father of 6 and grandfather of 6.

And I can eviscerate Thomas Sowell in any discussion of judicial policy, law enforcement, or intelligence gathering, just as he could skewer me if our topic were economics.

NIO pt. 3
"Sowell gives the impression that what Obama is doing is wrong, is unconstitutional:
DEFINE "WRONG""

You already did. Wrong = Unconstitutional.

"Let's just face it: if we believe the Constitution is just a piece of paper written by men in times past, then there is NO reason why men today cannot alter, ignore, pervert, dismiss or subvert it. If law is created by man, then it can be destroyed by man."

And you just illustrated why the founders held democracies in such high contempt. If laws are created by man, then they can be destroyed by man. That is a recipe for the tyranny of the majority. We are a constitutional republic. The Constitution isn't "just" anything. It is the agrred upon compact of the republic, the building block on which we build the rule of law. But it only stands as long as the governed provide their (our) educated consent. Once people no longer know or no longer care to know the limits on their governments, their governments effectively have no limits. And a government with no limits is a tyranny.

NIO pt. 2
"Sowell says that Obama has created new executive powers:
DEFINE "POWER"
DEFINE WHAT POWERS HE HAS CREATED AND WHY HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO"

Power = Exercising jurisdiction using the threat of federal force. Some examples of new "power" are; the President forcing a CEO of a private corporation to resign. The President inverting the standards of credit by giving preference in bankruptcy to unsecured creditors over secured creditors. Giving control of a major American corporation to the Federal Government and the UAW, while diminishing secured creditors worth to pennies on the dollar. The President using the justice department to threaten private U.S. citizens who happen to be said secured creditors, all because they did not agree to the worthless deal they were being offered.

Obama should not be able to do so because the executive branch, along with the legislative and judicial, have powers limited to those specifically enumerated in the Constitution.

NIO
"This is the problem...
Dr. Sowell insinuates that Obama is a threat to individual liberty:
DEFINE "LIBERTY""

Liberty = Freedom. Common understanding. The ability to do that which does not impinge on another's rights. The right to ownership of oneself, one's property, and the fruits of one's own labor. Asking inane questions is a debate style worthy of a 4 year old.

Oldprof
I second your recommendation for all to read "A Conflict of Visions." Reading this book is very worthwhile work.
I gave a copy to an old friend who is a college professor. We haven't had a chance to discuss it. I can only hope he read it through.
The book that really turned me around (in 1980) was Robert Ringer's "Restoring the American Dream," published when Jimmy Carter was president. Still a fun and passionate read.
Cheers

P.S. The libs are no doubt peeing their pants with glee over the citation error. If B.O. made such an error... but he is incapable of error, isn't he.

"Perhaps Dr. Sowell, lavishing praise on Holmes, is not the paragon of legal knowledge he claims to be. He's never been a lawyer, has no clue about the importance of empathy in the legal system, and fatuously believes that torture produces useful intelligence"

Where is ur evidence/support of this claim? do you not even have your own thoughts to share otherwise or do you simply just make statements and then don't back them up? Like a typical lefty?

Sowell continuously gives example after example after example of how certain policies, whether they be foreign or economic, have failed in the past and why they will fail in the future. That's what makes his articles great. And within his articles he constantly offers the reader statistics, facts, quotes, etc to back up his claims.

You are void and offer nothing more than an advanced highschool english student putting together pretty words.

To Mike and Nio
Dr Sowell is a wise man both from education and experience. When you two are marching to the tune of the Red Chinese or forced to worship Allah you may stop and consider some of the great things he has said. Dr. Sowell is very well versed in the Constitution and other founding father histories. You two sound like swaggering humanist goons fresh from indoctrination classes from some of our illustrious universities. In other words - still wet behind the ears.

Justice Holmes would agree with Nio
Holmes, a hero to Dr. Sowell, famously summed up his philosophy of legal realism in these words: "The law is what the judges say it is." Nio, you sound like a legal realist to me, even tho, to many, you and Justice Holmes may seem more like "legal cynics."

Perhaps Dr. Sowell, lavishing praise on Holmes, is not the paragon of legal knowledge he claims to be. He's never been a lawyer, has no clue about the importance of empathy in the legal system, and fatuously believes that torture produces useful intelligence.

He should stick to economics and while he's at it, keep in mind the inherent subjectivity and nuance of social, as opposed to natural science.

Nio, try to be a little less nihilistic. Agenda-driven judges truly can do anything they want with the law, but that doesn't make it right, even according to Justice Holmes.

This is the problem...
Dr. Sowell insinuates that Obama is a threat to individual liberty:
DEFINE "LIBERTY"

Sowell says that Obama has created new executive powers:
DEFINE "POWER"
DEFINE WHAT POWERS HE HAS CREATED AND WHY HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO

Sowell gives the impression that what Obama is doing is wrong, is unconstitutional:
DEFINE "WRONG"

Let's just face it: if we believe the Constitution is just a piece of paper written by men in times past, then there is NO reason why men today cannot alter, ignore, pervert, dismiss or subvert it. If law is created by man, then it can be destroyed by man.

Quotable Quotes
Yes, Dr. Sowell finally made an error by attributing a quotation from John Donne to Robert Burns. If this is his most grievous error, we are following the right economist. I would add that quoting the last stanza of Matthew Arnold's DOVER BEACH would be much more appropriate to the circumstances in which we find ourselves today.

Proper credit
Mr. Sowell,

I enjoyed your article but I believe that "Send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." is from a poem by John Donne.

Keep up the good work.

post modernism and leftists..
Dr. Sowell once again hits the nail on the head and reveals the empty suit of Obama and his cohorts. IF this wisdom were taught to our kids and the wisdom of the past were brought to bear on our present lives I would hold out more hope. The problem in our country is that history and our founding documents as well as the awareness of the outcomes of attempts such as what the present administration is attempting play no role in the debate over this stuff.Post modernism- the belief that truth only exists in the mind of the power that exists now leads inexorably to this state of affairs. The RINOS and in actuality the whole of the Republican party is also as much a disgrace in these areas. I heard McCain on Hannity the other night- unwilling and unable? to state that the words of Sotomayor were divisive and racist(all he could do was look uncomfortable and nod in half agreement-what a wimp! And this guy was in a Vietcong prison camp for 5 1/2 years). The inability of those who supposedly carry our water to speak the truth has led to one party of absolute corruption and another of absolute ineptitude. All I can say is WHERE IN THE HELL IS OUR LEADER(S)who are willing to articulate the truth- other than Dick Cheney? It's very dark in our country and I fear that it will take a disaster such as a terrorist attack possibly to awaken this once great nation- I pray not.

apres moi le deluge
Thanks to you Dr. Sowell for so clearly showing us that what we have forgotten in History is the wisdom of the ages.
Those who developed limited government and natural law deserve our respect, study and admiration.
What, however, are we to do in a society which has so lost its way anf ignores at its petril the lessons of the past? Where are we to turn to escape or even to survive the impending dark age of tyranny which is all but upon us?
Would that somewhere men might say "Here we stand. Remember us for proclaiming Liberty throughout the land." Like Cato our final act may yet preserve the tradition for future ages to rediscover. Courage in the land of the brave.

Well, Mike, editor of Donne
He also said: "... for affliction is a treasure, and scarce any man hath enough of it." I guess that means the poor folk are wealthy beyond measure, huh? And he ends that Devotion with "... and so secure myself by making my recourse to my God, who is our only security." I see no references to the government or Obama as security. Finally, Donne wasn't nominated to the SCOTUS, which has a totally different job description and set of qualifications.

Editing John Donne
All of you who quote from his "no man is an island" meditation are omitting the most important words he ever wrote: "Each man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." Sounds like empathy to me, which may explain your edits.

Excellent Stuff, Dr. Sowell!
America has embarked on a very dark journey of gadfly populism: Do what feels good, forget consequences. Paaartyyyyy!

Obama is the most shallow minded president that I can imagine. He is like a spoiled brat with a new toy: absolutely no appreciation for its value.

Obama has our credit card and is on a spending spree, buying companies, banks, insurance, healthcare .... whatever meets his fancy, with no real sense of who pays the bill.

We have essentially elected Alfred E. Newman ("What Me Worry!") as our president. Scary! We are headed for a tsunami of poverty and taxes with his idiotic populist nonsense.

Someone, please, take that credit card out of his hands! Heck, I would settle for just one day of Obama keeping his hands in his pockets and his mouth shut. That alone, could save us billions! The man is a night-mare!

And, the sad part, like Jim Jones in Guyana, the MSM and his minions are so caught up in Obama's glory that they think his Kool Aide will deliver them to the promised land.

Some books dull the mind by sending it on the same old path.

Other books sharpen the mind by sending it on a different path.

If everyone who posts here would read, at least twice, that enlightening book (A Conflict of Visions), much misunderstanding would be avoided. For some it's a hard read--Dr. Sowell is not writing for fifth graders or for anyone with an attention span influenced by network TV--but the gain in critical thinking would be more than worth the effort.

I found the essays in Black Rednecks and White Liberals more immediately entertaining and very wise, but A Conflict of Visions has influenced my subsequent thinking on politics and culture even more because it deals with the deepest roots of our assumptions about the individual, the culture, the economic system, and the political system.

A large part of my job involves recommending books to young people. A Conflict of Visions is being added to Huxley's Brave New World, Orwell's 1984, Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and Shakespeare's Henry IV plays as part of their education on the relationship between individuals and their institutions.

As Dennis Prager often says, clarity of thought is more important than agreement. Dr. Sowell almost invariably contributes to our clarity, whether or not we agree with his conclusions. But of course clarity of thought can have unpredictable results, and those who would think clearly may well find their most cherished assumptions challenged and overturned. As the old saying goes, a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. But he might be a liberal who has read and understood A Confiict of Visions. It's an intellectual game changer.

I'm going broke
from buying everything that Sowell writes, reads and endorses!
I also cannot believe the amount of work that he continues to produce!
This column is the work of a young, hungry, and persistent writer!
Are you not in your seventies?
Are you not into golf?

Wonderful Insight
This Burke gentleman had great forsight, and because Mr. Sowell is well versed on the writings of such men, he (Sowell) shows great insight into the current set of circumstances in which we find ourselves as a nation.

Obama is at best complicit in helping to destroy this nation and at worst is the mastermind behind this orchestrated effort to fundamentally "change" it from its very foundation. I'm beginning to think though that he's both player AND pawn.

Many Americans voted for the glitz and glam of Obama that was created by the media but failed to ask the important questions concerning character, leadership, experience. Now, since they have invested so much in him- all their hopes and dreams- it is hard for many to admit to the mistake of giving this untested man the Presidency. In light of the tremendous number of very bad decisions he's made so early in his presidency and the amount of power he's commandeered, many have grown silent as if with bated breath they keep their fingers crossed hoping all will "work out" in spite those decisions. I see a numbing effect in many Obama supporters. That and denial.

I think citation wrong
John Donne not Robert Burns

Arrogance is Bliss
It's all about arrogance. Obama believes that he can BS everyone with his unique ability to connect with the average person by his charisma and mastery of the teleprompter. No one really knows who he is because he has accomplished nothing that would demonstrate that he would be hired anything more than an entry level manager in corporate America. He has never shown any management skills. He was elected by default to the Senate because of a "timely" scandal during the election.

He never completed one term as a Senator and never showed leadership as he voted straight party line time after time. Obama has the unmitigated gall to believe that all the leaders before him are just idiots and that he is the only one that knows how tho handle the extremely complicated political issues between the countries of the world.

Arrogance is when one feels that they are above the rule of law and the will of the people. Obama seized control of banks and took control of Auto companies. He fired executives and gave a sweet piece of ownership of the Auto companies to the Union of which he became heavily indebted during the election. This he did over bond holders that should have been first in line legally is frightening.

Now he has set up an "internet Czar" under the guise of security. Once he gets total control of the media and the information network, it will be all over. Welcome Obama the arrogant Chairman of the new socialist republic.

Well Said Terry from GA
I couldn't have said it better

Actually, it was John Donne....
in Devotion XVII who said: "... and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." It's the same piece from which we got "No man is an island...."

Otherwise, excellent article and further proof of the wisdom of the old saw that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Obama is simply a fool
He is neither bright, intelligent nor articulate -- those are media creations. He is not "loved around the world" either and is most probably laughed at by most leaders of the world, as being some self-centered circus clown who actually thinks he can charm the world with his sophomorish speeches.

Powerful men somewhere have propped-up this little man. Probably because he is the one they could most likely manipulate to carry-out their agenda. And as long as Obama gets to enjoy the glitter of the Presidency, jet around the world on AF1 and constantly enjoying the adulation and cheering of the mindless over another of his non-substantive babblings -- Obama will be content.

Obama is not doing any of this stuff folks. Heck, he probably didn't even know what General Motors is until someone told him. Much less the goings-on on Wall Street and the like.

Barrack Obama is play-acting the President -- someone else is pulling his strings. There's absolutely no doubt about that.

Constrained vs unconstrained
This column calls to mind Dr. Sowell's book entitled *A Clash of Visions*. In the book he expounds on the totally different world views of those who think humans and their societies can be shaped and controlled by an "elite" and those who recognize that societies are organic constructs that develop and grow by the multitude of acts of individuals and groups.

I just finished the book and it really helps me understand the fundamental differences between the groups now contending in our nation.

Who Is John Galt?
Recon-USMC, I concur. The courage that Dr. Sowell displays in being (gasp!) an outspoken conservative black man should not be discounted.

It looks like I will be reading Edmund Burke once I am done with Atlas Shrugged. Two fine examples of relevent consequence to abandoning American principles in favor of facsism and/or socialism. They should definately be required reading in high school!

While Obama is busy
trying to take over the United States, our enemies are busy plotting same. Barack Obama's obsession with destroying the capitalistic foundation of this nation will assure that our enemies achieve their end.

Is it revolution yet?

Obama is neither stupid nor naive,
he is cunning. His upbringing and mentoring by an avowed communist and his associations with others of that ilk and racists like wright make him a very dangerous man.
He is a puppet of the soros crowd, a fellow traveler out to destroy this country. His guile has allowed him to placate those who would expose him and their fear of PC politics freezes them from any action against him.

Everything he proposes is designed to whittle this capitalist system down one stroke at a time until there will be no recovery available short of armed revolution. They believe the population won't have the stomach for it or aren't willing to see their gov't checks stop and will roll over and accept his socialism, except it will be communism and the truly ignorant and the greedy will have voted it in just as Krushev predicted 50 years ago.

The commielibs have set the table for a person like this for 40 years and if we don't fight back NOW, this republic is history.

***These Words *****
These Words by Thomas Sowell today and thoughts by Edmund Burke should be required reading to Vote in America every time we Vote .

I want to go unabashedly on Record .
Dr. Thomas Sowell is by far the smartest person living in America , maybe the world .
Since his genius is surrounded by incredible Common Sense and deep seated unique Wisdom in few we see in this world today .
Thomas Sowell has the rare ability to always look at the bigger Picture , Historically and even today .
Nor does he hide his Love and devotion of our Country, Capitalism and our Constitution .
But most of all he looks past Obama's beyond his Hyper inflated massive appeal and sees him for exactly who is and isn't .
''And is wiling to say so " Thank God .

your article
As always, I love your article. Mr. Sowell you are a great man!

Liberty and Tyranny
While, as usual, you are right on target, the Dems and liberals, have a bad case ostridgeits. They want to put their collective heads in the sand and ignore history. Sir Edmund Burke was anything but a lousy statesman. He was prescient beyond his time. George Santyana states "that those who do not heed the lessons of history, are doomed to repeat its' mistakes. Obama, a Chicago crooked politician, who has run nothing, who is a socialist/muslim, is interested in converting our society to a European style society. He has abrogated his oath of office by ignoring the constitution. I fear that two thing are going to happen. In which order, I'm not sure. An eventual uprising by the people "to throw off the bonds of a government that is not of the people, by the people" This idea of rebellion, not by peaceful methods is not new. See the word of a true patriot and statesman...Thomas Jefferson. The second occurence will be either an attack on the U.S. or Israel to start WWIII. Obama is too stupid and idealistic to recognize the real world. Further, his economic policies are destroying whatever economic credibility we have left

Is it too late?
As bad as I hate to say so, this once great nation of ours is doomed. Liberty has become license, and the people have corrupted to such an extent that our constitutional government is unreconizeable. Our national conduct resembles that of acient sodom. God help us. ARROW

Sowell's Wisdom
Dr. Sowell is a more than worthy heir to the likes of Mr. Burke. Would that we should be so blessed that someone of either of these gentlemen's wisdom would be elected to office.

Great Stuff!
Dr. Sowell knows that our current day solutions lie in understanding history and not in the 'HOPE' of the future!
Another great article! Thank you!

Take on dis mantle
Dear Dr. Sowell,
I'm always heartened from your cogent and insightful articles. A knack for plainspokenness is a rare gift among the erudite.
I would characterize president Obama as a greenhorn among the throng of "public servants" infected with "the fire in the belly",(read AVARICE or NARCISSISM). You've used gentler language that's probably more effective.
Recently our government is more obviously ,[to use your word], dismantling our economy.
With no formal education beyond 12th grade, thus I do not qualify as
bona fide conspiracy theorist. Nevertheless, there seems to be some underlying propulsive element to the trends in governance of our nation.
Perhaps even the White House is ignorant of choreographed pressures intended to irreversibly drive our country into socialism, or worse, into Marxism.
Our American capitalism has been the "goose that laid the golden egg". God save us if someone manages to butcher the goose!
P.S. In a recent article you used the term, "tinker's dam", but your typist wrote "tinker's DAMN". the etymology is interesting to some geekish logophiles.

C Change
Their is a change developing in the American people. We are becoming TV watchers and hollywood worshipers. Unfortunately, most of these are the young..our future. But these people, young and old, don't care about fiscal policy or keeping us safe, they are too busy worrying about who will be the next American Idol winner. Too many people would rather see a charismatic, attractive and likable president who speaks well and performs acts of useless feel-good symbolism even though his foreign and economic policies are so far leading the country to more danger and bankruptcy. They are blind to what is happening to a near bankrupt California, as Obama follows the same path. Today, people would rather have a likeable Obama who is instituting ruinous policies, than a dislikable old grunt of a president who would insititute the things that would protect this country and allow it to prosper. Heaven help us.

Thomas in DE. The MSM are not good men
doing nothing, they are evil in and of themselves. The One is simply the choosen one by the "vast left-wing conspiracy" to do the dirty work finishing the destruction of the USA. That has been the goal since around the 1930's.

Tory
Figures Sowell would be a Tory.

History Lost
As usual, another intelligent, timely, and important piece from Dr. Sowell.

History has been forgotten and worse history is rewritten for political purposes in our schools. Many schools don't even teach civics or American history any longer and those that do have distorted or rewritten history to suit their political philosphy.

We are destined to repeat the errors of the past and intelligent people such as our founding fathers and obviously Mr. Burk were keenly aware of the dangers in governing.

The only way to prevent despots from taking over is to keep governments as small and powerless as possible. We are now racing in the opposite direction at warp speed.

Heaven help us all...God helps those that help themselves. We must act now or forever hold our peace.

Time to Stand Up and Fight
What I remember best about Edmund Burke is his famous quote, "All that is necessary for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing."

I think of that each time I recall that the MSM did nothing to vett Obama and everything they could (and still do) to shield him.

Disgusting.

Joel-De Oppresso Liber
You wrote.."Tehran knows perfectly well that when they do, we will make their nation glow in the dark for 50 years."

Under Ovomit, I no longer think that is true. After all, he "Stands With The Muslims!" He is one of them.

A teachable moment;,
That would be a Friday on TH with GREAT essays by Krauthamer, Prelutsky, and Sowell.

Joel - you forgot malignant narcissist. I've never seen so many dangerous screw ups gathered into one place as Obama and his boys. Every day another assault on our rights and liberty. People are becoming shell shocked - at least those who are paying attention.

Unfortunately, there are so many out there who are completely uninvolved, not paying attention. If you know someone like that, clue them in. We'll need them to clean up this horrendous mess we've voted for ourselves.

Article should be required reading
Great, great article! Dr. Sowell is one of the finest minds in the world today. This article in particular should be required reading for all students, high school, college, wherever. We don't need a president who is "cool." We need one who is wise. Obama may be cool to the younger generation, but to others he is cold, calculating and particularly, very unwise.

ACT is the operative word!
We must act NOW to take our country back from those who are bent on destroying the greatest country this world has ever had! If we hesitate, we are doomed to fail and our country will cease to exist as a great country! We will end up financially & morally bankrupt, if we survive at all!

100 day wonder
It used to be 90 day, but I think inflation is setting in.

I guess if we are to believe what Obama says to his Hollywood friends, we haven't seen anything yet. While they may cheer, it makes me tremble.

History just repeating itself.
Dr Sowell, great article again. This is just another example of how people continually fail to learn from history as we have doomed ourselves to repeat it again by electing exactly what Burke warned about. I'm sure the many writers such as Burke learned these admonitions from past experiences.

With the government at the helm, Government Motors (GM) is doomed. There will be a point where even the Obamaniacs and his "Arse kissers" like Kieth Olbermann will say enough money has been thrown to this black hole of unionism gone wrong.

English class
" ... for whom the bell tolls ..." is not Robert Burns. If he said it, he was reading John Donne's "Devotions."

correction: quote

Excellent article as usual Dr. Sowell. However, "Send not to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee" is John Donne, not Robert Burns.

Eternal insights on power.
Sowell on Burke - - Perfect. Obama seems to want unlimited power and authority, which the constitution does not grant to him. When will America wake up to the danger?

Dr Sowell

Normally I would not quote someone who represented darkness in the world, on a column of a man like you - who represents light in the world and integrity, honesty, faithfulness and values beyond question.

When I think of Barack Obama, I cannot help but think of this quote:

“There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience. A scoundrel may be of use to us just because he is a scoundrel.”
Vladimir Lenin

Only mushy
Moderates and the few moderately conservative Dems can stop this fraud. It doesn't look good.
The GOP just absolutely refuses to take their constitutional duties seriously.

The man has never run any business in his life and he is a rookie at the only thing he is good at-politics.

He is a crummy lawyer/senator- nothing more. He is a charlatan. Nobody should be suprised by anything that comes from a guy that has used Saul Alinsky and skin color to get where he is going....

Dr Sowell keep shining your light

You are a light in the darkness Sir!

The Obamanoids!
Keith Olbermann calling Edmund Burke a lousy statesman is like a ten year old farrting in church and pointing at his Grandpa while teeheeing. This is the same Keith Olbermann who went to an animal husbandry Ivy league school, as you can tell we're just frothing at the mouths believing mr. countdown.
But I digress, Dr. Sowell's take on the inadequacies of our Black Community-Organiser-In-Chief is spot on, this piimpdaddy approach to world affairs is inherently dangerous.
By adopting a let's talk or finesse the honeys out of their panties approach instead of action will get us into a world of Shiites (literally).
Limiting our Intelligence Agencies to do their jobs effectively is playing russian roulette with this nations resolve. We can't have some enemy combatant suing our Intelligence Personnel because he got an unscheduled bath with a Doctor present, or his Koran fell into the toilet, swirled, and disappeared. Especially, since Janet "Just call me Jan" Napalitano our Homeland Insecurity Czar is dispensing her soft language rhetoric to the point where we can't even refer to them by who they really are, TERRORIST.
Just call me Jan and BPOTUS actually believe that by softening our position on Terrorism with the frilly language and negotiations, and displaying volatile pictures will, somehow automatically send a message that'll cause young Abu Zabayduhs to avoid the 72 Virgins Pushing-Up-Daisies Camp when they so embrace Sharia, is patently ridiculous.

Ask not for whom the bel tolls
A minor slip up for a usually thorough Mr. Sowell, but it was indeed John Donne who coined the phrase "No man is an island."

For whom the bell tolls
Not to be picky, but I think it was John Donne, in a poem or essay that begins, "no man is an island, entire unto himself" and ends, "therefore, send not to know for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee". Robert Burns lived about a century later than John Donne so I think John Donne said it first. Nevertheless, a very good column as usual

Keith Olbermann Called...
He said, "Edmund Burke is dead and a lousy statesman."

A concise and informative bit of historical insight, Dr. Sowell.

Dr. Sowell,
You blow my mind. Perhaps the greatest compliment you receive is that few liberals dare debate the text of your columns.

When will Sowell and Barone become American Governmental policy setters?

This is all above Obama's pay grade
Thank you Dr. Sowell for this article. How eery it is that quotes from so long ago are so apropos today with this president. He tries to act like he knows everything but quickly shows us he is way over his head.
