Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I must report the shocking facts: Medical care is medical care. Nothing more and nothing less.

This may not seem like a breakthrough on the frontiers of knowledge. But it completely contradicts what is being said by many of those who are urging "universal health care" because so many Americans lack health insurance.

Insurance is not medical care. Indeed, health care is not the same as medical care. Countries with universal health care do not have more or better medical care.

The bottom line is medical care. But the rhetoric and the talking points are about insurance. Many people who could afford health insurance do not choose to have it because they know that medical care will be available at the nearest emergency room, whether they have insurance or not.

This is especially true for young people, who do not anticipate long-term medical problems and who can always get a broken leg or an allergy attack taken care of at an emergency room -- and spend their money on a more upscale lifestyle.

This may not be a wise decision but it is their decision, and there is no reason why other people should lose the right to make decisions for themselves because some people make questionable decisions.

If you don't think government bureaucrats can make questionable decisions, then you haven't dealt with many government bureaucrats.

It is one thing to deal with bureaucrats when you are at the Department of Motor Vehicles and in good health. It is something else when you have to deal with bureaucrats when you are lying on a gurney and bleeding or are doubled over in pain on a hospital bed.

People who believe in "universal health care" show remarkably little interest -- usually none -- in finding out what that phrase turns out to mean in practice, in those countries where it already exists, such as Britain, Sweden or Canada.

For one thing, "universal health care" in these countries means months of waiting for surgery that American get in a matter of weeks or even days.

In these and other countries, it means having only a fraction as many MRIs and other high-tech medical devices available per person as in the United States.

In Sweden, it means not only having bureaucrats deciding what medicines the government will and will not pay for, but even preventing you from buying the more expensive medicine for yourself with your own money. That would violate the "equality" that is the magic mantra.

Those who think in terms of talking points, instead of trying to understand realities, make much of the fact that some countries with government-controlled medical care have longer life expectancies than that in the United States.

That is where the difference between health care and medical care comes in. Medical care is what doctors can do for you. Health care includes what you do for yourself -- such as diet, exercise and lifestyle.

If a doctor arrives on the scene to find you wiped out by a drug overdose or shot through the heart by some of your rougher companions, there may not be much that he can do except sign the death certificate.

Even for things that take longer to do you in -- obesity, alcohol, cholesterol, tobacco -- doctors can tell you what to do or not do, but whether you follow their advice or not is what determines the outcome.

Americans tend to be more obese, consume more drugs and have more homicides. None of that is going to change with "universal health care" because it isn't health care. It is medical care.

When it comes to things where medical care itself makes the biggest difference -- cancer survival rates, for example -- Americans do much better than people in most other countries.

No one who compares medical care in this country with medical care in other countries is likely to want to switch. But those who cannot be bothered with the facts may help destroy the best medical care in the world by falling for political rhetoric.

You don't know everything or body, Dr. S
I didn't carry insurance as a younger man because I was extremely unlikely to have long term sickness then. I NEVER "went to the emergency room" in the manner you imagine. Yes, when my son broke his arm I went to the emergency room just like I have when I had insurance and had an accident. That is what emergency rooms are for. Falling off a roof, like my son did is an "emergency". Who goes to their gp to get it set? However, you seem to think the "emergency room" is free. Far from it. I paid 8 thousand dollars for my son's broken arm. I paid 22000 for my burst appendix. Silly me. I "went to the emergency room" for both. One, I had no insurance the other I did.
Insurance increases the cost of medical care for the vast majority and saves a small number from financial disaster. It's a form of lottery. A good form in my opinion.

UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE
Universal health care and health Insurance are most overrated topics. Health care will be cheaper if patient is responsible for the choices in care and true market forces are allowed to take hold( Same prices for all patients from the same provider). It will never happen because the politicians and executives of the bureaucracy will never let it happen. You understand the true nature of the beast only if you are involved in the nitty gritty of daily care and how the system currently works. Every one talks about health care system never spent a single moment in understanding the system. I know this because I spent 26+ years in the system.

I wonder
What the cost of medical care would be if no one had insurance. Would it be higher, lower, or stay the same. I'd be willing to bet if there was no insurance AND mdeical lawsuits werer reduced/capped or eliminated. Health care would be cheaper.

Public Discourse
Thank you, Dr. Sowell. Bringing perspective and definition to public debate is rare in present-day American discourse. You are an American treasure. As a nation, we cannot begin to solve any problems where the scope of the debate remains unanchored and undefined.

Most advanced system?
Back in the pre-HMO days, when doctors still made house calls, and knew their patients by name, an office visit might cost $25.00; a significant operation might run into the hundreds of dollars. Doctors, operating as self-employed contractors, and not servants to the HMO- had flexible payment plans, and would frequently allow their patients to repay their medical bills at $10.00 per week, or what they could afford. Sometime in the 1970's, this traditional one-to-one, doctor-patient relationship went the way of the 'Model T'. The lawyers, the 'bean counters', and the financial gurus discovered a 'gold mine' in "Managed Heath Care" . With the advent of the HMO's, doctors no longer occupied the primary role in the U.S.Health Care system, but instead become servants to the money managers. Patient 'care' took a 'back seat' to the financial 'bottom line' as the primary impetus in the U.S. Health care system. Health care costs began to soar with the advent of the 'managed' Health Care systems (whose primary function was to generate income and profits). Lawyers, always quick to sense a new source of wealth, descended upon the carcass of the HMO's like jackals, winning 'million dollar' malpractice 'lottery' suits, further driving up insurance and health care costs. This is NOT the best health care system..

I say America does not have a conservative political party..all we have are the pro-choice socialists/communists/facists versus others.

Medical Costs
To those of you who think lawyers are not responsible for huge increases in medical costs-
Why do lawyers advertise so much looking for reason to sue doctors, hospitals and drug companies? Answer: very profitable!
Why do physicians and hospitals go the extra mile (extra costs) in diagnosis and teatment? Answer: fear of prosecution.
The next time you see or talk to a physician ask him/her how much they pay for malpractice insurance. I think you would be surprised.
I remeember the time when lawyers couldn't advertise. Yes, that's true; and I believe medical costs were comparatively less expensive.
Keep this in mind - more physicians: more competition, lower costs: more lawyers: more medical related law suits, higher medical costs.

Ditto, n
Far too often we who "dare" to bring morality in to the public discourse allow our voices to be drowned out by those that would subject us to their brand of morality.

We need to have this debates, but we must be honest that morals, right and wrong, do matter.

You guys gotta check out this brilliant piece I read on that very topic today.

Medicine-Medicine vs Money Medicine
One more post, then I'm going to bed. When I moved to a new city I looked up a doctor to perform a minor surgical procedure that I require from time to time. I was referred to a doc in private practice (a very GOP guy with px of Reagan all over his office). He insisted that the procedure had to be done in a hospital operating room although I protested I had had it dozens of times in the doctor's office. By him, I was admitted to the hospital (of which he was part-owner BTW) and had the thing done in the OR. His bill was $650 and the hospital bill for this & that came to around $2000. I soon transferred my care to a university medical center where the docs are on straight salary. My new specialist was a professor who had more qualifications than Dr $$$$$. When I needed the procedure again it was easily done in five minutes in the office. The bill was $125. To me this example stands as Exhibit A of how for-profit medicine is often exploited by greedy doctors who see a patient's good insurance plan as their kids' college tuition plan.

To David TX
Actually, there are some things government does very well, like holding steady the helm of the Ship of State. Perhaps you aren't familiar with the actual operations of the federal government. Some people who live away from DC think that the government has only two classes of workers, 1) rich famous crooked politicians and 2) bumbling stupid incompetent lazy bureaucrats who sleep at their desks.

That fantasy doesn't reflect reality as a lot of the real work of government is done by middle-management people who have a lot of training, experience, and expertise in their field. I used to say that the country is actually governed in carpools, as these middle-management types, who usually have a PhD or a JD or an MD or at least a Master's, often ride in to work together and on the way they put this and that together and come up with a plan. These are the unseen folks who "resource" the big names. They do the research, design the studies and programs, put out the releases, and write the speeches. The advantage of having professional career civil servants do the work, rather than privatized rent-a-people, is that they've been there for years---the idea is that they know how to maintain the job regardless of who is in the White House. They know the history of a project, and who was running it ten years ago, and why he got moved out, and who you have to call at what agency to get clearance to make something work (or who to lean on, and how). They know where the bodies are buried.

The majority of these folks feel the same dedication and loyalty to Civil Service as others might to military service. The Civil Service has been gutted since the Reagan years began the methodical destruction of our government. You say the government does not do things well. Certainly, it did things better before Bush II injected his political ideology into the work of federal agencies. We need to restore the professionalism of the Civil Service---and then let it do its job.

Volumes of Words
We will get some form of socialized medicine, "universal healthcare". Dr. Sowell is right as usual.

But the fault is ours. Of course Leftists want socialism.

But the fault is ours because there is no organized political movement which advocates the thinking of Dr. Sowell.

On one side we have the socialists, the Leftists. On the other we have the pro-lifers.

There is no political movement which stresses small and limited government.

America does not have a conservative political party...all we have are the socialists versus the pro-lifers.

Liberals
Seem to avoid the overwhelming reality, government is never efficient. I don't care which party, they don't do things well. I promise you we could privatize the military and get a more efficient and better trained force. It is simply the way it is. Examples are everywhere, government all government is costly and inefficient and is self serving. If you like public schools, DMV, IRS, VA hospitals, public transit then you will love a government run single payer system.

lilly
"If I were a veteran and I had a choice between getting free care at a stinking dirty VA hospital staffed by quacks and a top-of-the-line university medical center staffed by up-to-date professors working in a state-of-the-art facility, and using my Blue Cross or government insurance or whatever to cover it, guess which one I would choose. So if "VA hospitals don't work well", why did vet groups go to the mat to keep their care in such places? I wonder if it was just knee-jerk objection to anything proposed by Obama. "

Lilly you have made my point again, which was government does not do things well! So why do you think they can take on a truly gargantuan task like this well? They can't is the answer.

Medicare drug coverage...
I will present an example how government is handling medical care. I suffer from panic attacks. I was even admitted to a clinic to try to overcome the problem. I was tried all the antidepressant drugs on the market and I cannot tolerate any of them. My doctor treats me with lorazepam, generic for Ativan. Medicare would cover antidepressants (more expensive than mild tranquilizers) but refuses to cover lorazepam. Some beaurocrat decided that I cannot be treated with the medication that keeps me going, but would pay for a more expensive medication my body cannot metabolize. Is that what America wants for future medical care?

re: Lilly and universal coverage
First, I am definitely NOT a proponent of keeping the current system, but I am not completely sold on the benefits of single payer. I've seen some interesting ideas of reverting back to catastrophic coverage only, and taking the insurance companies out of the loop period. Or having a mix of nationalized/market based solution.

But I do take exception to any requirement of universal coverage within the CURRENT system. I've seen some posts here lamenting the fact that folks who seemingly could afford insurance choose not to. Well, if your employer is not covering it I can't say I blame these people for choosing to spend their money enjoying life than spend 500$ - 1000$ out of pocket a month on some rip off insurance plan, which is guaranteed to come with a 500$ - 2000$ PER YEAR deductible to pay for doctor visits and exams on top of that ridiculous premium. Great, what a deal! And then if you have to use your coverage for anything "catastrophic" welcome to a nightmare of insurance company bureaucracy while they dodge your claim and you end up having to fork over even more money.. while still paying them an obscene monthly sum for their "coverage".
Universal coverage will ONLY be palatable provided costs are controlled and insurance companies are FORCED to pay their claims per contract without any hassle or BS on their end. Anything else is just a shiny gift to the insurance companies to rake in all those devious consumers who wanted to spend their money on life and not insurance.

And by the way, David in TX
Obama didn't just propose that vets get care in non-VA hospitals. He proposed that vets would be responsible for injuries incurred during WAR through private insurance. The government would, thus, abandon its responsibilty for troops harmed in the service of this country. That's why the rebellion.

National Health
I lived in the UK for 4 years. After seeing "nationalized health care" up close and personal, I pass. I wonder how expensive it is to get to Thailand or somewhere.

Universal health care
Many of the "uneducated dumb masses" in this country believe that Universal Health care means "free health" care. Instead it will cost many of them their lives as waiting lists for treatment will get progressively longer, as the Governments Health Care costs raise. At some point the Government will start passing polices where medical treatment will be limited due to age or chronic condition. The beautiful hospitals we have now will fall in to disrepair as the Government doesn't have the money to maintain the upkeep. The quality of care will decline because the incentive to work in the medical field will be gone and the best and the brightest will not want to work for a pittance.
MRSA and C-diff are rampant in UK hospitals. Waiting lists are 6-12 months long for routine surgery. Getting into see a specialist is nearly impossible, and some specialized therapies (eg chemo and research protocols) are being with-held from some patients due to the high cost.
Health insurance is a policy just like car insurance. It is for major health concerns, not for a quick trip for an annual physical. Americans are brought up to believe that they are entitled to all that they want/need. People also seem to forget the fact that health care starts at home - with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Unfortunately that mentality will lead to a health care system that is sub par, and will cost many of them their lives.

charles in TX
I have an idea, let’s socialize the law profession. Yeah, instead of rationing health care, (which will be the outcome of socialized medicine) let’s instead ration freaking trial lawyers.

Lawyers do not create wealth- they siphon it from producers. Lawyers write the laws and those laws require lawyers to interpret their sophistic mess. Hmm, self-service obfuscation- sounds like a peach of a profession to me Chuck.

To kylie
Google "medical tourism" and learn about Americans going to other countries for medical care because they can get US- or England-trained doctors and nurses at good modern hospitals that don't require them to climb off the operating table and go catch a cab to go home an hour after having surgery. The profit motive in US medical practice has compromised the standard of care we receive here.

Oh Yes They Do
Re "Countries with universal health care do not have...better medical care": I assure you that many regards they do. US System: elderly person lives alone, has stroke. Is allowed 6 days in hospital then 10 days in rehab then is sent home alone with no assistance. Universal system: longer hospital stay, in-home assistance. US system: chronic schizophrenic gets 3 days inpatient to stabilize his medication, gets discharged to self, has no place to live, no supervision, returns to living in street. Universal system: inpatient stay as long as necessary, discharge to supervised apartment with meds supervision, counseling support, and sheltered job situation. US system: surgical patients discharged day of surgery whether nauseated or bleeding or in pain. Universal system: patient rests in bed under medical supervision until fully recovered.

My husband had an infection. In the US he was given a prescription for an antibiotic and flew to Europe for a work assignment. A week later the infection flared up. In Denmark he was immediately hospitalized, kept on bedrest for two weeks, and given more antibiotics and appropriate nursing and medical care. They apologized that they couldn't cover 100% of the cost since he was not a Danish citizen; his bill was USD$30.

To Jackie
This has been analyzed and explained on TV a hundred times: the reason the hospital bills your Blue Cross $10 for an aspirin and $50 for a pair of disposable socks and $3000 for a single day on Intensive Care is to cover the care they are required to provide to people who don't have any insurance or any money. YOUR Blue Cross is subsidizing people who choose to go out and party with their money instead of buying insurance. You are offering to cover the care of your neighbor so he can have fun with his money. How altruistic of you. All the more reason to require everybody to be insured. You are not allowed to drive down the highway without auto insurance to cover costs in case you crash. Why should you be allowed to go skiing without health insurance to cover costs in case you crash? And why don't you hold a tea party to protest mandatory automobile insurance?

David in TX
Re "[the government] can't get VA hospitals to work well"---and yet when Obama recently proposed an insurance system that would allow veterans to get their medical care anywhere they chose, and not just in VA facilities, there was an uproar so loud that he quickly withdrew the proposal. If I were a veteran and I had a choice between getting free care at a stinking dirty VA hospital staffed by quacks and a top-of-the-line university medical center staffed by up-to-date professors working in a state-of-the-art facility, and using my Blue Cross or government insurance or whatever to cover it, guess which one I would choose. So if "VA hospitals don't work well", why did vet groups go to the mat to keep their care in such places? I wonder if it was just knee-jerk objection to anything proposed by Obama.

And oh by the way: if you are paying $600 a month insurance premium, the medical care you get for it is not "an entitlement". It's a shared-risk purchase.

And Obama has NEVER proposed one nationalized system, as they have in England---he has said in plain English "if you are satisfied with the plan you have now, you will be able to keep it". Should everyone be forced to buy insurance? Yes. I have personally known parents ca age 30-35 choosing not to buy health insurance to cover their young children because they preferred to put their money into monthly payments on an expensive car. This is irresponsible. Who do you think ends up paying for their kid in the ER when he breaks his arm or gets appendicitis? You and I do. So skipping insurance is not the good old American self-reliance that Republicans praise so highly.

It ain't about care. Or insurance.
Jeez Mr. Sowell, do you think these people care about us? It's all about power. Control. There may even be a few that believe that the federal government controlling as much of your life as possible is good for you, but the rest of them are LTSOBs bent on drinking the intoxicating cup of power, and living high off the hog at our expense. The villians are in Washington D. C.

Obesity Rates
Just wondering what our obesity rates are in the US as it relates to income level. I was born and raised in West Virginia - a low-income state. We seemed to have a lot of overweight folks living there for having so many poor who couldn't afford food. I see skinny poor people here in Korea where my family lives now. I wonder if other countries' poor are as obese as ours in the States?

Hospitals
The Hospital is no place to be if you are sick or injured. The largest cause of death in this country is hospital and doctor mistakes. I try not to go, even to visit some poor soul who cant avoid it. And once the government takes over you wont want to be within a block of a hospital, for fear of catching something incureable. The government cant run the post office, what do you think they will do with health care.

Dr. Sowell
Great column, but I don't think it will be taken to heart.

JMO51
Low administrative costs for medicare/medicaid?

33% Fraud?

Baffling
The government does nothing very well, costs more and takes longer, there is just a dirth of evidence for the gov't being able to do this well. Thye can't get VA hospitals to work well in most cases, anyone been to the post office or DMV lately, how bout the tax code, I am not sure the good Lord can understand it. Do we want the same kind of beaurocrats that buy 900.00 dollar hammers making health care decisions.
Then of course there is the testimony of people like Tim from WA that grew up in the UK system and find it lacking. I know logic prolly won't sway anyone but if it is essentially free will the demand for service increase thereby effectively rationing the service, since larger numbers of people seeking free care from a fixed number of health care workers will immediately make the service harder to get.
People this is America land of opportunity not entitlement.

COST of medical care!
Until we get control of the runaway COST of medical care, there shouldn't be universal care. Hospitals use expensive, unnecessary sedation, and general anesthetic for the most minor procedure! Medical professionals disregard patient rights, disregard informed consent, are careless, cause easily preventable infections which they then cure for some extra money of course. $176.00 for foot pads, $30.00 to rent a blanket, inept surgeons making it necessary to have the same surgery twice. Where the hell are all those people who get to sue Doctors? They are non existant for the most part. Malpractice suits being the cause of the rising cost of medical care is a myth perpetuated by the medical community to avoid responsiblity for their carelessness. The hospital will bankrupt you! ESPECIALLY if you are uninsured. Uninsured patients are charged far, far more, plus interest for the same operation. There are no lawyers to protect the uninsured like insurance companies have for their clients. Unless you are an illegal alien you will pay that bill or else.

Dr. Sowell
Great article and if I can be so bold I would add the following:

I have seen nowhere even an attempt at laying out the sheer size and complexity of the medical care and the ancillary support and provisioning industries.

**Doctors come in many varieties
MD
DO
DDS
Chiropractic
**Within each of these (MD, DO, etc) is a long list of specialties that cover everything from Podiatry to Brain Surgery and everything in between, eg Gynecology.

**Each of these specialties has its own set of Surgeons, OR nursing specialists and related professional such as Anesthesiology.

**These doctors practice in a wide variety of venues:
Very Large nationwide hospital chains
Local hospitals
Clinics of a wide variety such as:
By specialty
A broad spectrum clinic or doctors office complex.
Individual offices

**In each of these settings a different set of support staff is required.
*Hospitals
Administrators
Billing
nurses aids
Legal Staff
Food Service and dietary specialists
Facilities Engineering
Waste Handling
*Clinics
Much the same as above but on a smaller scale.
Most of these services would be contracted.
*Individual Offices
Office staff and Nurses
CPA, Billing and many administrative functions are contracted but are done by people that specialize in the medical support field
**Pharmaceuticals
**Medical equipment, everything from diagnostic to OR to Dental Chairs.
**Medical equipment, patient related, wheelchairs and oxygen

I wish someone would pick this up and run with it.

THERE is no way that a single monolithic federal agency can over see this gigantic, very technically sophisticated, hugely diverse business segment of the United States.
The very arrogance of those that propose such a course is revealing of their total lack of understanding of the scope of what they propose.

HSA's?

Universal coverage
As a diabetic child and living in England, I was covered under the government health system. Not a lot of fun in my mind. I much prefer the USA system than what the government systems offer. I have spoken to my relatives back home about the wait to see a specialist, that takes about six months. And that is what we will look forward to if we adopt that type of system. Ask yourself, what program has the government run that is run well? I can't name one, other than MAYBE the armed services. And I dare say that could be done better if it was out sourced, exactly like UPS and FedEx do a much better job than the Post Office.

You think medical care is expensive now? Just wait until it is free, then you will know what expensive is like.

Jim
Admin costs for private insurance companies is high, but it is very low for medicare. You were half right, get rid of the insurance companies have a single government run system of payments and you could save a bundle.

David B
Universal is not free. And universal will not eliminate co-pays. Universal need not be a government run system like in the UK, it will be more like Medicare in which patients see private doctors. Univeral need not restrict others from purchasing a gold plated plan if they want to pay for it. But what it will eliminate is people rolling the dice and then when they get in trouble relying on charity which comes in the form of a higher cost to those who are currently insured.

45caliber
I agree with you that not everyone who has no health insurance cannot afford it. Some are choosing to spend their money elsewhere and are relying on the charity of others in the event they have an acute need. That is one of the many reasons why we need universal healthcare and it must be mandatory. That does not mean we have to have a government run system or that individuals should not be able to opt out if they want to pay for a gold plated plan. But everyone who arrives at an emegency room without the intention of paying the bill is simply cost shifting to those of us who have insurance.

Hope they see the light...
I agree with you as usual.
One thing most young folks do not know is that even Social Security recipients pay at the least $200.00 each & every month for their coverage.
If they can do it a young person can if they wanted too! Not sure they know how to deny themselves anything that is fun & pleasurable. That is what their income is for.
I think it most irresponsible to try to fix something that works. Doctors already have a protocal they deal with. What next???
Personally I would like for our President to stop apologizing on my behalf to other countries.
Bowing to Arab Kings.
Playing kissy-kissy to Castro & Chevas.
And leave our Health Care system alone.
Has anyone stopped to think why so many people come here (USA) to get medical proceedures done?

Charles:
When talking to the Brit about their program (see a previous post my me on this thread) he told me the main reason that it took so long to see a doctor was because most Welfare people used it as a form of entertainment rather than because they were sick. That's part of the reason the doctor could see them in five minutes or less. They would come in to see who else was coming in and what problem the other had. It was more entertaining that watching daytime television.

So yes, since it is free, you have a LOT of otherwise healthy people tying up the system for those who are ill.

Ron:
Repealing all taxes and replacing them with a single tax would allow people to realize just how much tax they actually pay. Why do you think there are so many "business taxes"? It is because the cost of the tax is added to the price of the goods so the customer doesn't really know how much tax he is paying.

For instance, Gore was selected to be President because he discovered that the FCC had granted the telephone industry a clause that said that all FCC costs would be paid by the customers - up to a maximum of so many dollars a month. He found that the maximum wasn't even close. By charting the maximum, it added an extra $20 a month tax to every telephone in the country. That is the largest tax increase - at least to that time - in the entire history of the U.S. By claiming that the money would be used to put computers in all schools (99.9% already had them)he could collect the tax. BUT - if it was placed on the telephone bill as a tax where people could see it the people would get upset. So they had the telephone companies add it as a telephone company charge. THe telephone companies objected to getting blamed for it so they made a deal - the telephone companies got to keep 5% of it as profit. It was phased in over ten years or so. The base rate went from about $10 a month to about $30 a month you pay now.

It is Free
I believe many people want health care because they think it is free, not because they really need it. This is simply more government largess they think can vote themselves, without regard to who is paying for it. With the tax base shrinking like it is because of layoffs I don't see how it can be done.

JMO51
You must not know much of Hillary Care. (Probably you are too young to remember any of it.) The Dems turned it down since they were in power. First, there were NO medical people on the panel that put it together. One member had a single semester of biology, ect. in mind to be a doctor but no more. Second, once it was finished the Dems were in power in Congress and they took a look at the package (refused to sign off on it like they did Obama's packages so they actually looked.) 47,000 pages of it.

There was one clause that caught their attention. It stated that if you broke any part of the care package, the government had the right to seize everything you owned to pay for enforcement of it. AND there were two clauses in it that were conterdictory. If you obeyed one, you broke the other. No choice. It was pointed out to Clinton since even the Dems were unset to find it.

He agreed that it was there and it would stay there. When the Dems threatened to come up with a package of their own, he told them to go ahead - but that clause better be in the new package or he wouldn't approve it. The Dems were surprised and asked him why it was required.

"We need a way for the government to shut down anyone who comes out against us," he told them. "This will allow us to seize everything they own if they open their mouths. And we need to do that to run the government the way it should be run."

Dan - afford to
I work in the chemical industry and have most of my work life. We always have a lot of contractors around. Many of them will only take "turn-around" jobs. That's when the plant is shut down and you are trying to get as much done as possible in as short a time as possible. They generally get to work 10-12 hours a day seven days a week for about a month or six weeks at a time.

They have insurance available but very few of them will take it - not because they only work that short a time but because they don't want to take it. Most of them keep working on another turn-around somewhere else. One told me, "why should I take insurance? It costs me about $400 a month. I can go to the emergency room and usually pay nothing since I can tell them I'm between jobs."

So, yes, a lot of people do have insurance available and won't take it.

Dan

Dan, not one single thing you said is true. You were zero for six. Per George Will, "For conservatives seeing is believing, while for liberals believing is seeing."

Afford it but choose not to???
"Many people who could afford health insurance do not choose to have it because they know that medical care will be available at the nearest emergency room, whether they have insurance or not. "

What is Mr. Sowell's source of this infomation???

There are no doubt some healthy self-employed or wealthy people who can afford health insurance but choose to not buy it, but there numbers can't be very large.

Most people are covered through their jobs, the cost of this tends to depend on the number of employees on the plan. The larger the employer, the lower the cost per individual.

Individual health plans are not what you'd call affordable for most people. To say that many people who don't have employer provided OR individual plans CAN afford individual plans is simply false.

Health Insurance
Last month I heard a 24 year old woman state to afellow waitress that she needed to get her teeth cleaned but she didn't have dental insurance so she couldn't afford it! She makes over $40k per year, has a roommate and has a cocktail almost everyday after her shift
Insurance is for something unexpected and really expensive. What is the matter with this generation? Do they all want a nanny state? What about personal responsiblity? i actually believe too many people think national health care will be free. Unfortunately it will be for large families making minimum wage.
Dr Sowell nailed it.

Bernie

Mr. Sowell
You hit the mark as usual. You have clarified some questions I have had and look forward to your next column. Keep it up!

Thomas Sowell
I've passed this column around to disbelievers. I love your work. Have you talked with Michael Steele yet? We need excellent choices for representatives and Senators!

Repealing all existing
taxes and replacing them with a single proper tax for each level of government would remove all those taxes from the price of health care and reduce the price by one-third (1/3).

Refatsew #16: Bill Gates can buy his own doctors, and have his own hospital at home fo his health care.

Democrat-controlled Congress refused to put Hellery's Hellthcare up for a vote.

redeemer care
All anyone needs to know about obumah-care is that when he was an Illinois senator, he voted to deny health care to children who had the audacity to survive an abortion because he considered their lives inconvenient. Never mind that these defenseless babies were citizens of the United States. As a Constitutional instructor at chicago’s university of bill ayres, surely the anointed one knew that?

Great article again!
Dr. Sowell is so clear and lucid in his explanations of things. The problem is, Government doesn't care. They want control. Most leftist who think government control of everything think what the government wants is wonderful. I hope they are the first to need real medical care when it is no longer available.

Joe answered
Thanks for your list of groundless false assertions. In the final analysis, the only alternative to a profit motive is command-and-contol centralization - the goal of every dictator. Any historical precedent that such absolute power might be abused by the tyrant wielding this power? The operant "motive' then will be increasing the power of those in control. The health of the average individual won't even be a blip on the radar screen.

If you disagree, please feel free to provide a list of medical technology advancements (from the year of your choice) emanating from a state system that amounts to 5% of what the private medical industry has produced in that same year.

I don't know why it is

but I almost never get a comment to my posts.

Is it because I have solved the problem completely and there is nothing else to say about it?

Or is it that you do not understand?

No health insurance...
I'm acquainted with a single woman, in her mid-40's, who owns her own business and earns a six figure income. She does not have health insurance because she claims that she cannot afford it. She also drives a one year old, expensive vehicle and she and her friends can often be seen at local restaurants and "watering holes". That said, last year, she began to have severe pain and numbness in her foot, which led to having surgery for several blood clots. How did she pay for the diagnosis, surgery and after care? She took herself to the emergency dept. of Duke Univ. Hospital. When she couldn't pay, money was found through Duke or some agency there. So, why bother spending the money to insure yourself; let someone else figure it out!!!

you have had it, goodbye.

Malpractice insurance will be purchased by the patient. If you think something might go wrong, you take care of it, just like buying insurance with your airline ticket.

A lawyer would be executed if he ever sued a doctor for medical reasons.

So what if the doctor made a mistake, you are there because you made a mistake.

And what is this nonsense about living longer. That only applies to those of you who love to suffer or loves to see other people suffer.

Otherwise, everyone can die when they wish, there will be no pills, wires, or tubes with the idea of living longer.

When you get that sick, you have had it, goodbye.

TANSTAAFL
Right now, medical expenses account for about 16% of GDP. Of that, a huge chunk goes to administrative expenses. When Medicare was enacted the hospital in the town where I lived had to increase the number of employees in its accounting dept from two to twenty two. This was just to handle the extra paperwork. Every additional gubmint program makes the problem worse.
Enacting a single payer system(the single payer always turns out to be the gubmint) will not result in any significant cost savings. The bill still has to be paid regardless of who writes the check. Attempting to arbitrarily lower costs by artificially cutting price thru lower reimbursement levels will produce a decrease in supply. One way or another, we have to pay the piper. It's an immutable fact of economics.

page one of a 5,000 page

Once it is determined that Health Care should be available to everyone, just like the Postal Service, the way to reduce Health Care costs is simple.

Just eliminate all insurance companies, their buildings, computers, and employees, and get rid of all Government health care employees.

That would also eliminate the need for people in each and every doctor’s office and hospital, who spend their day filling out insurance forms.

I understand that there is a list of the procedures and the cost of each, for various parts of the Country.

Give every qualified doctor, hospital, and pharmacy a blank checkbook so they could write a check each evening for all the services they had provided that day.

That is page one of a 5,000 page Government document.

Just remember the post Office Service. Anyone can mail a letter, and anyone can receive a letter. With Govt Health Care, everyone can get sick, and anyone can see a doctor, just go to the closest postoffice, I mean medical facility.

linus disease
Just as Pauling left his element talking about Vitamin C, so Sowell does talking health care. His facts are typical of zealots who trying to justify their beliefs. He is preaching to the choir and they accept it without searching for facts.

Of course the US "healthcare" system gives quick service. This is a piece work system. You get paid for what you do, not use of one's intelligence. You will be treated whether you really need it. How do we do in terms of infant mortality, heart disease, specific cancers. If we did practice true healthcare, ie., vaccinations, preventive health checks, school nurses, we would find a very affordable system.

Medical care has to be more centralized and focused as opposed its current profit motive. Experience based care will provide much better care overall.

people lived until they died.

When I was born, there was no Health Insurance, we visited the Dr. and paid $1, once in a while, and people lived until they died.

These days billions are paid for insurance, a few days in the hospital costs $100,000, and you must suffer a few extra years for no good reason, then you are forced to "breathe" until you die.

That’s an improvement?

There is more to life than a tube in your mouth.

Let God do it, and remember God don’t use no tubes, no wires, no knives, no machines, and no pills or shots.

How mean and nasty some people can be, to force a person to suffer for your joy and glory. That person does not enjoy your visits, but you get to brag about your visits.

Let me assure me that visiting a grave site is a much more pleasant visit than visiting a prisoner in a bed in a so called medical home.

The solution: A Kevorkian Room in every so called home, available 24/7. Admission price, a non-”living” body in the bed.

When my Most Beloved Sweetie went to an “old person prison,” I said, Give nothing but pain shots. A week later she was in her new job. The sign on her door says, “Now the Angels have a Role Model.”

My mother passed her driving test, then a week later was sentenced to a death worse than hanging, for 17 months in a bed. Do you think that she, or her children, wanted that to happen?

No it is a result of intense BRAINWASHING since birth, and some people want a law that says you must suffer as long as we can make you suffer.

My oldest sister helped my youngest sister wallpaper a bedroom, went home fixed supper, went to bed, then on to Heaven.

A few weeks ago my Brother sat down to watch TV. They found him the next day, with his head leaning down, but he was in Heaven

Which one had the best end of life?

Reality
Every Industrialize nation has universal healthcare but us. Programs in those countries are popular and no nation that has universal healthcare is talking about converting to a system like ours even when conservatives come to power. Plus no one goes bankrupt because they get sick and are uninsured or underinsured.

Based upon health statistics the US ranks behind many of these counties. You can share all the stories you wnat because Americans have their own stories about our system.

When Hiliary Care was up for a vote, Republicans claimed to have a better alternative but when the Republicans came to power the did nothing. In the sixteen years Univeral Healthcare has gained in popularity, has widespread support in the medical community.

Only the wingnuts are still clinging to our current mess of a system.

of believing Obama or any other liberal wants you to have "better" medical care. Nationalized health care has nothing to do with health care, it's about control. "

You're right. Ultimately, it is about limiting the number of human beings exhaling those poisonous gases into the air and using up too many of nature's resources.

It is all part of "Agenda 21" and "Sustainable Development."

Phylo's false vision of France
Hi "Mad Mullah." Any chance France's system works better than the other socialized systems because 92% of French residents have complementary private health insurance? How about those French copayment rates of 10%-40%? Since France utilizes more market-based ideas than more socialized system that it works somewhat better would come as no surprise to Sowell.

So how's the socialized compenent doing? Well, even though it is now consuming more than 11% of GDP and about 20% of each workers income (after payroll and hidden taxes are accounted for), it's now running billions in deficits each year. French MD's make only €40,000/yr., though they are free to charge whatever they like, and even demand lump-sum payment.

The system shows unmistakeable signs of cratering, and has recently moved to assiging "gatekeepers" before one can see a specialist, in other words "rationing" health care. France "free rides" on U.S. medical technology because global budgets and fee restrictions mean has destroyed the incentive to make capital investments in medical technology.

All as Sowell would predict.

The Sixty Four Thousand Dollar Question
Other than the simple fact that I do not know how you can effectively control prices, when the user is not the one paying for the service, it seems to me the question we should all ask ourselves is, do we want to be treated like a child or do we want to be treated like an adult? A child needs an adult in order to survive. And it is the adult that determines what kind of life that the child lives. The adult can and does determine if they will give the child what it wants, or they can decide not to give the child what it wants. The child really has no "choice" in the matter. On the other and, most adults don't want to be treated like a child but as the adult we are. So, the question we should ask yourself is do we want to be treated like a child or like an adult? In the medical care case, the question is, do you want someone else to pay for your needs or do you want the ability to pay for your own needs. If you do not want to pay for your own needs, you are telling everyone, you do not want to be treated like an adult, you want to be treated like a child. The second question we should ask ourselves is how important is our personal freedom? Because when you ask government to pay for anything, you also give the government the right to restrict your personal freedom. New York City for instance wants to get rid of some fast food outlets because if you eat there, it is bad for your health, i.e. it increases the cost of providing you that free medical care. So, the choice is our to make. Do we want to be treated like a child, or do we want to be treated like the adults we are? Is your personal freedom and everyone elses personal freedom important or is it not important?

Margret Thatcher ought to know

Margret Thatcher said that English socialist who wanted "universal health care" could have it only as long as they didn't run out of other peoples money to spend.

In the United States, the congress has ALREADY spent every dime of tax money that will be collected for the next 50 years on bailing out the banks and in funding ACORN. They are printing money as fast as they can. Inflation is sure to follow. It will cut your earnings and savings in half or more. It is the "unseen tax" that the socialists are imposing on the public right now.

But hey. Who is going to win American Idol? Now THAT is what is important!

One of the last things I want happening

to me is losing the right to determine my own medical decisions to a government bureaucrat.

All Progressive/Socialist/Liberals
want is for everyone to have equal coverage. They do not care about quality as long as no one has more or better than anyone else. I would be thinking about another line of work if I worked in the healthcare industry just in case. We are headed for the dark ages under the thumb of socialists.

"The Bottom Line
It is morally wrong for the State to take away my property to pay for other people's medical treatment. In addition, it is unconstitutional for the Fed'ral Gov't to do so."

Very good!

As with most issues, it boils down to the morality of taking from other by force to give to others who did not work or earn it.

All the Pro-Universal Healthcare arguments in the world will never negate the immorality of forcing another person to pay for someone's healthcare etc. It is plain wrong.

Words vs Actions !!!
I am surprised at the comments on Dr. Sowell's article about health care, medical care, or "universal health care. I have been calling you guys who read Dr. Sowell on TH,the "Smart People". The problem with Health in America is not the meaning of the words. It is the number 535 period. The 535 Waxmans(D-CA)in the U.S Congress and at the State level, who are Doctors, Lawyers, and Indian Chiefs, that have been bought and paid for by the entire Medical Industry. "Wake up people"!!! How about this, just add up all the "Punative Taxes" you pay for the sun coming up, and ask your POTUS and your Governor to give you just half of that money back. 99% of what you need to be healthy, you could pay for. And, I would bet the cost of Catastrophic Health Care would be a whole lot cheaper than the Billions President Obama and the Waxmans are proposing. OK, and about the Children and the Poor they love, well I think we should ask everyone in Congress, Dept. Sec., and President Obama,to take a 50% pay cut in their salaries and pensions for serving one term, abolish the Dept of Edu, EPA, NEA, XYZ, and a few other alphabets that do nothing....
Mission Accomplished!!!

Liberals and health care
In promoting universal health care, liberals have cited several countries. This works until further examination reveals that the systems in these countries haven't worked out so well. To date, they have raised the shining examples of Great Britain, Canada, Sweden, and even Cuba. Now, they are citing Switzerland. Keep the propaganda coming!

Isn't it interesting?

I have an MBA and 40 years of experience running large medical clinics and hospitals. I know a little about this subject and Dr. Sowell is ABSOLUTELY correct in his article. I've been saying the same thing for the last 25 years.

An insurance company is NOT going to do ANYTHING to improve your health care. Period! They have expenses to cover and all money paid to them is FIRST used to take care of their operating expenses, salaries, and executive bonuses. What is left is paid out to those who actually provide the medical care services such as doctors, physical therapists, and hospitals.

I have watched three generations of a certain family with cronic health problems, all caused by life style, come to a certain hospital. The family has no insurance and little money. The county tax payers take up the slack in what that family does not pay. Under universal health care, the tax payers would pay ALL of their health care. As it stands now, every now and then, the hospital can get a few dollars from them when they are not buying cigarettes, beer, drugs, a new motorcycle, wave runner, big screen TV, or trampoline to go in the back yard of the double wide.

Universal health care is a "straw man" issue for government bureaucrats to gain power, control, and tax money from the public. It WILL NOT improve health care one iota, and will in fact, kill quality health care. Just look at the performance of ANY government run operation. Look at veterans hospitals if you want to see what government run health care will be like.

But the majority of Americans are as dumb as a post, and you can't tell them anything. They will not read books, and may not be capable of that anymore now that the government has been running our school system. You want to know what government health care is going to be like? Look at the public schools who can't teach Johnny to read.

But hey, it's all free isn't it? So who cares?

In England
I took a picture of a headline in the London news. People who were tired of waiting for governmental approval for their dental care were resorting to pulling their own teeth. Also, there were numerous ads for "dental vacations" to places like the Czech Republic where you can vacation and get the dental care you need but can't get done in England in a timely way!!

Can you imagine that? We're going to kill the Goose because some people think it should be better. Typical.

There is a way...
for people that think that "socialized" medicine is the panacea that will cure all our ills to actually try it out. Join the military. I did 12 years on active duty, I received excellent care. I was in the personal reliability program, I went to the front of the line.
The same could not be said of my dependants, they waited like everyone else. Ask my wife about the six hours spent in the ER waiting for someone to tell us if our child had spinal menunginus (they had determined almost immediately that it wasn't but didn't bother to tell us or take the mask off of her face).

And if you want another view ask a Retired Veteran who was promised health care for the rest of his or her life. But truth like benefits changes with time. How is the VA treating you these days?

Words Versus Realities
Pithy and to the point, Dr. Sowell. Thank you for pointing out how semantics are used to confuse a simple issue. Sgt. Relic at 7:11AM is likewise pithy.

Lon
You obviously didn't read the article. Mr. Sowell specificly metions the fact that Americans are more obese, do more drugs, and have more homicides than those others countries. Perhaps since he didn't spell it out for you, you were unable to understand what he meant. This means our average life span is lower than those other countries for reasons that will not be fixed by UHC. Personally responsibility would be a good fix here.

Medical Care
We used to have a good public health system with most teaching hospitals, county general hospitals and in the east some public health hospitals. In about 1966 the AMA stepped up to the government trough plunged their snouts in and began sucking up medicare. The public health care system was gone along with the public health hospitals and pro bono medicine. This was engineered by the winers who alledged the "less fortunate" didn't get good care and that the public heath service was deficient. Now the winers would have us turn the whole system over to those who they said couldn't run it in the 1st place. "those who forget history are bound to repeat it" (unknown)

Semantic Hang Up...as usual
When one takes the time to look at the "big picture", it becomes clear that the rhetoric of the media and the politicians is seated in the manipulation of the "meanings" of words. "Health Care" vs "Medical Care" is a great example, and this article points it out like only Dr Sowell can. There is a startling difference "IF" you come down from the clouds of euphoria to critically examine the differnce.Once accommplished, you must then ask,as Dr.Walter Williams once posed, "Process Questions".

Part of that "Process" includes, "Who will 'Pay' for it"? The more "Outside" financial influence, the less control to the patient. It's normal. "Who pays the piper calls the tune". It's just that simple. Be it insurance,a portion of deferral of cost, or "universal health care",absolute submission to bureaucratic rules, regulations and systematic guidelines prior to treatment, the patient is has less of a "handle" on whatever issue that brought him or her to the clinic of hospital.
There is a clear semantical differnce between "Health Care" and "Medical Care". The patient is in charge of his "Health Care".

The "real" question is, "How and to whom does ones 'Medical Care' be addressed and 'PAID FOR'"? The more in between the patient and the doctor, the more obsticles in treatment and its "cost" come into play. Seems to "me" both ends of the primary players, patient and doctor, get handcuffs put on them by those who have no vested interest in either.
Just a thought.....

Universal Health Care
My husband is an 17 year post residency ER Physician. The hospital threw the ER group out on their own to form their own company- as the hospital did not want to pay that expense any longer. This is why a patient will receive a separate bill from the ER doctor as well as the hospital. Now, my husband's company struggles to stay afloat. Out of 100 patients he takes care of in the ER, 60 pay cash and 40 do not pay anything. It would be beneficial to all parties if ER physicians were not required to pay outrageous malpractice rates - then the majority (more than 60%) of patients could better afford the ER costs.
Universal health care ideas sounds like a 'good' and 'fair' idea. However, put into practice would be a disaster to capitalism. And, who do you think is going to pay for this universal health care idea? You are! You will be taxed - every one of you! So if you do not have health care insurance, and it becomes Universal, you will be paying for it in taxes!

Excellent article, Dr. Sowell
This was a great article. I know you have addressed this before, but keep it up. Maybe, eventually, you will get through.

We must also keep in mind that there are thousands of people who don't have medical insurance because they have enough money to cover the expense themselves.

Oprah Winfrey does not need medical insurance. Nor do many other wealthy Americans, yet they are lumped into the statistic of those "without health care" often touted by the media. And these wealthy Americans will not be subject to substandard medical care should we get the “universal health care” that Obama wants. Wealthy Americans will jump on a plane and fly to another country if they need surgery or specialized care. The rest of us will have to accept what they hand us, and it won’t be pretty.

tricky problem for Sowell
These are interesting claims, but they are not actually true enough to count as facts.

The idea that health care, as Sowell defines it above, is not affected by whether one can afford routine medical care in the form of periodic physicals and medicine and the like, is so silly that one imagines that Sowell assumes his audience will be entirely ideologues who don't care if his claims pass the laugh test.

Of course Sowell needs this distinction because he is trying to explain why Americans pay more for health care while having shorter life expectancies than the comparable countries with universal health care.

So he is in the awkward position of insisting that you have to look more closely to see why our system is better despite costing more for worse results. But he has to hope you don't look deeper than his description or one finds that the obvious answer is that people without health insurance will in the long run have worse health and be costlier to the system.

Medical care
I would like to choose my own form of medical care, thank you. Which means that I prefer my own form of healthcare - good diet, lots of exercise, no vices.

Americans keep buying into medical care they don't need: statins, HRT, poorly-timed vaccinations, Gardasil, overuse of NSAIDs, excessive use of Ritalin and similar drugs, excessive use of anti-anxiety meds.

Folks, you see a doctor because he's a Pez dispenser for pharmaceuticals, not for his knowledge. And there's gonna be a medical depression - soon - with massive physician layoffs and pharmaceuticals going the way of AIG. The government will bail them out, of course: what are lobbyists for, anyway? And Big Pharma, the biggest socialist sop going, will be begging.

Meanwhile, you can keep your healthcare system. If I break a bone, I'll see a doctor. You can keep your cholesterol nonsense, if you want, but I'll maintain my health the way I choose.

My greatest fear is that the government is going to force us to use the system - taking away personal choices. Which for me - and lots of other conservatives - means being responsible for my own health, and being responsible for making informed decisions.

Good and Costly or Poor and Cheap
Pirate Rob
Your complaint seems to be the cost of medical care. The only way to get the cost down is to degrade the system that provides it.
You want to be able to buy a Yugo for the price of a Cadillac. It doesn't work, UNLESS the government takes control in which case the Cadillac becames another Yugo.

Simple Fix
The issue seems to be with health insurance, not with medical care. So why are we focusing on fixing something that isn't broken? Why don't people have health insurance? No job? Not a large enough insentive for employers to provide good health coverage? Those are the issues. Create more jobs so more people are covered. Provide employers with more of a tax break to provide better coverage.

The only things you get that are free,is provided by God.Sunshine,rain,snow,etc.

You have a good point - for most americans without chronic health problems, up to age 60, an HDHP with a $3000 deductible is low or zero premium (for self-insured plans), and after a couple of years the HSA will basically cover all care needed, yet you are protected from catastrophe. True "wellness", using educational and support programs to encourage good health and practices/lifestyles, only allows even more people to use that approach. If the government wants to do something really useful for medical care and wellness, it should provide more health education and consumer skills in the schools, and give employers tax credits for putting 500 or 1000 into a startup HSA for employees. We reduced the annual rise in healthcare costs at our company from 12-14% to 2% by instituting these principles, and not waiting for the government. It is called self-reliance, and it is a cool thing.

Corndog ...........
I agree. Texas passed a law some years ago now that limitted the amount someone could get for "punishment" of the doctor to $100,000.

Yeah and it was President Bush, then Governor Bush, that got the Tort Reform Bill passed.

I wonder if they will allow malpractice lawsuits when America goes to socialized medicine because mistakes made due to the poor quality of healthcare.

The No. 1 Problem with US Gov. Care
The REAL problem with U.S. Government health care is their decision to use a point system to determine what care you will be allowed to receive.

For instance, the older you are the less points will be given. The more important your profession, the more points you get. (Being a politician will get you the maximum points, of course.) If you are retired and aren't working at all, you get ZERO points for that.

Once they determine what your point score is, they will look up your problem in a government manual and tell the doctor what treatment you get. The less points, the less treatment. After all, if you are no longer providing a service to the nation since you are old and retired, you shouldn't get as much medical care, should you? And if you die younger than you should with medical care, then that only means the government has to pay out less money to keep you, doesn't it?

The problem with healthcare
The problem with healthcare in america today is that there is not enough personal responsibility. The comprehensive nature of most insurance policies raises the overall cost of healthcare, because now not only do the doctors, nurses, and administrative staff need to make money off your routine visit to the doctor, but now the insurance company needs to make money too. Insurance should be just for catestrophic care, and incorporate health care savings accounts that encourage individuals to save self-ration health care.

Pirate Rob . . .
ANYONE who walks into and emergency room WILL BE TREATED. The ability to PAY will not be questioned until AFTER treatment is rendered.
The Hill-Burton act requires hospitals that receive federal funding to provide a certain amount of "free" or "low cost" care.
Being unemployed (or underemployed), a person can negotiate the fee (and in 99% of all cases, be successful in receiving a substantial "discount") for doctor or hospital treatment.
In addition, interest free "payment plans" can be negotiated, giving a person many years to pay for medical treatment. As long as you pay SOMETHING, even $5.00 per month, they will NOT come after you.
Been there, done that.

I was diagnosed in Descember 2008
with stage 4 adeno carcenoma of the lung. I spent a week in the hspital due to other complications. I went thru 18 weeks of chemo (I just finsished). I will find out next week if they got the tumor or not. It will be by CAT scan. If I lived in Canada, I would not have had the FIRST CAT scan yet, which found the cancer. I probably would have died from the quart of fluid around my heart before I even got to a doctor. If Obambi and the looney left tries this socialised medicine crap, I will exercise my right to self defense through my second amenment rights.

Charles
Lawyers screw people all the time and get away with it. I saw one of your schister buddies on TV here in FL telling people to call him if they took a certain medication because "... you could be ENTITLED (my emphasis)to a large cash payout". If you guys were so consumer friendly why dont you support making people who bribg lawsuits against others and lose pay for all the court costs? Why not do away with contingency payments? You guys are not better at least doctors start out tryingto make people better you guys just make money.

Here are the facts: The United States ranks 37th in health care according to the World Health Organization. And we are paying more than twice as much, per capita, as people in France, who have the highest ranking health care system in the world.

Notice how sophists like Sowell always mention Canada and Britain when they compare our health care to other countries. Notice how they never mention France.

France has universal coverage, and allows people to supplement that with private health insurance if they wish.

Also, if you don't think private health insurance companies ration health care, you haven't dealt with private health insurance companies. They do everything they can to deny coverage.

The problem is the business model doesn't work because the incentives are in the wrong place.

Health insurance companies are motivated to take as much money as they can from you, while providing you with as little service as possible. They accomplish this by making things so complicated that no one really knows what they are getting for their money. They don't really know what is covered and what isn't.

And does Sowell not understand that emergency rooms will send you a bill? A big one. So big that it might bankrupt you. That's what he calls health care?

This guy is trying to convince you people of something that is demonstrably not true. He is a disgusting liar.

Phylo out.

Sorry...
But stupid comments sometimes cannot be overlooked.

A lot of people in Texas opposed the "tort reform" 45caliber is bloviating about. If a quack (and they DO exist) butchered your kid, would $100,000 compensate your family?

If it is true that malpractice suits dropped by a factor of 10, it is largely because in the same idiot "tort reform" Texas passed, they changed the law's procedural and evidentiary requirements. Now, it is MUCH more difficult to prove medical malpractice, partly because you have to find doctors who will testify against their incompetent brothers. It's a good trick.

As an attorney, I don't think anybody...including attorneys...should have special laws protecting them from the results of their incompetence or malfeasance. I or my doctor should have to face the same law my plumber faces if we harm consumers.

tibby
Every time there is a tax shortfall, the government has to lay off people.

But did you notice WHO they lay off? Not office workers! It is always the people the public need the most such as teachers and police officers.

Basically, they are making a point that that if you don't cough up more money for them to spend, they are going to make things as bad for you as they can.

Greatest System In the World! -- ?????
I talked to a Brit about their system. "Greatest system in the world!" he bragged.

There is a three day (anyhow) wait AFTER your apointment time to see a doctor.

Hospitals have up the 9 months waiting time.

Equipment like MRIs and EKG's is shared between many hospitals.

Doctors are paid by the number of patients they see rather than by medical problem. So they schedule patient appointments every five minutes.

A government employee tells the doctor what treatment to give you.

You pay the doctor a monthly "retainer" to see you immediately in an emergency. Then you pay 100% of the cost since you took care out of order.

Welfare people tie up the system for entertainment since they have nothing else to do.

But it is still the "Greatest System in the World!"

Corndog
I agree. Texas passed a law some years ago now that limitted the amount someone could get for "punishment" of the doctor to $100,000. There were a LOT of screams from the lawyers about unfairness to the poor. Actually, they were screaming because they couldn't make millions by suing. As a result the doctors here were able to turn back to medical treatment and the suits have dropped in number by a factor of 10 or more. The tort lawyers can get more money by suing for something else.

I'd REALLY like to see them pass a law that requires the loser to pay the winner's court costs. That would eliminate almost all frivilous court suits. But the lawyers would really be upset by that.

Indicently, the U.S. has 3% of the world's population. But we have over 50% of the world's population of lawyers. And I've noticed that several American lawfirms are now trying to move into European law since they don't have the suits we do here.

Acting CFO Of Freddie Mac Commits Suicid
Acting CFO of Freddie Mac commits suicide
April 22, 2009 - 8:16am
David Kellermann

VIENNA, Va. -- The acting chief financial officer of Freddie Mac, David Kellermann, has apparently committed suicide, Fairfax County Police tell WTOP.
Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Mary Anne Jennings says Kellermann, 41, was found at his Hunter Mill Estates home Wednesday morning.

Jennings says police responded to the home after family members called police around 5 a.m.

"We were called from inside the house to come investigate an apparent suicide," Jennings says.

Because of legal ramifications, Jennings says she can't describe the nature of the suicide.

"We're not to give you details of the condition of the body, except to say it was an apparent suicide," Jennings says.

A final determination that his death was a suicide will come from a medical examiner.

Kellermann has been with Freddie Mac for more than 16 years.

He was named acting chief financial officer of the agency in September 2008. He took over after Anthony "Buddy" Piszel resigned.

As CFO, Kellermann is responsible for the company's financial controls, financial reporting and oversight of the company's budget and financial planning.

Freddie Mac has declined to comment.

healthcare
is a service that should be paid for like all others. Doctors should be made to compete for customers like all other service providers. Here's the problem...who is the doctors customer? In any other business the person with the $$$$ is the customer, its not like that in healthcare is it? Who has the money? Whoeverhas the money is the customer.

Why would it be different ??
In a city near where I live 16 police officers are being laid off due to budget shortfalls. That means tax revenues are down because business is in a downturn. Also, schools are laying off workers including teachers due to lack of money.

What do you think will happen when there is not enough money in the government coffers to give medical services to the population? Why would this be different than what is experienced in other government sectors? Medical services will eventually be rationed. Anyone who says otherwise is delusional.

Abuse by non-paying leeches
is what is bringing down the health care industry and bankrupting states, yet that is exactly what obambi wants.

My wife is a medical coder and you would not believe the trivial and down right silly ailments WE are paying for through Medicare and Medicaid. Most of these people could get all the medical attention they need by going to the drugstore and buying some Tylenol or cough medicine, BUT since somebody else is paying for it (that would be you and me), they'll waste the time and resources of emergency rooms for headaches, sniffles, slivers, or flatulence.

I'm also acquainted with and related to others in the health care field and they tell me that they are almost at the breaking point - too many hours, too many hoops to jump through and too many freeloaders. It's a BUSINESS which, like many others in this country has been ruined by gubmint meddling.

I cannot repeat enough P.J. O'Rourke's "If you think health care is expensive now, wait until it is FREE!" Dhimmicrats cannot name one single thing that gubmint operates efficiently , economically or with even a modicum of common sense, YET they want to turn the medical field into DMV. This is insane, as are most liberal lunacies.

Next on the buffet table today - ErphDay, Climate Change Follies starring Algore and a huge cast of idiots.

universal healthcare
I am a Stage III3C ovarian cancer survivor. I chat online on an ovarian cancer support site with fellow cancer survivors from all over the world. The women from those countries with universal healthcare complain of long waits for surgeries, rationed testing, treatments that are unavailable (of course they are available in the US) due to cost effectiveness. The survival rates in those countries for various cancers is well below that in the US...same for cardiac conditions, etc. Their doctors are worked to the bone since they are salaried and that is also controlled by government. People with life threatening conditions like me live in fear of nationalized healthcare. And if you are healthy, you could develop a life threatening disease later in your life and would be in my shoes quite easily. Think twice before allowing our politicians to destroy the best healthcare system in the world. Why do people from all over the world flock to the US for medical care? Because it is the best. There has to be a better way. And we will pay for universal healthcare...we will be taxed up the wazoo to get inferior healthcare. Personally I think health insurance should be mandatory like car insurance, and to assist those less fortunate, allow tax credits or some kind of tax help to help those who can't afford it. For those who can afford no insurance, public healthcare program would be in order which we have now, ie. Medicaid.

Great Article
Americans hear the word "free" and they will follow the source over the cliff to their doom. If they think that someone else is paying the bill they'll overindulge.

Our system as it stands isn't perfect, but it is superior in every way to "socialized" medicine. Culling the herd is a good way to put it. Under this system, the older a person is, the farther down the list for care they will go. At 68 that scares the daylights out of me.

Words vs Realities
ATTABOY Rush in MO. COMMUNISM is INDEED all about CONTROL!!

Don't make the mistake....
of believing Obama or any other liberal wants you to have "better" medical care. Nationalized health care has nothing to do with health care, it's about control.

Malpractice

Why is it that anytime I hear libtards spouting off about the high cost of healthcare, there is never a mention of the outlandish malpractice lawsuits that cause doctors to pay excessive malpractice insurance?

Could it be that lawyer scum like john edwards made a fortune channeling the voices of dead babies to sue innocent healthcare providers.

Anytime there is a potential 'Cash Cow', you can bet that there's a liberal attorney not far away looking for a chance to fatten their bank account.

You want to lower the cost of healthcare?
Start by lining a few tort lawsuit attorneys up against the wall.

They can't budget
Anyone that thinks the government can manages health care just needs to look at the recent bragging point of the President. $52 million by one department by ordering office supplies in bulk. $18 million by another department from canceling 27 conventions. $15 million by consolidating 1,500 employees from 7 offices into 1 office. How much were they spending on these things to start with if they could save that much? Government will set a price tag on something based on what the private sector can do it for. What we have seen, though, is that it ends up costing about 4 to 5 times as much after they get it set up.

Sqt Relic
You would do away with about 70% of the health care cost right now.Doctors would doctor, nurses would nurse.

But, in Canada, I never even bothered
... to instruct nor to employ a lawyer. Even if I had it would have served no purpose as Canada's totalitarian feral and provincial bureaucracies have completely politicized and absolutely own operate and control every aspect of life in Canada, especially including the "health industry," the "insurance" industry, the legal profession -- and the courts. Only my absolute determination to not be buggered by that rotten system saw me achieve a very limited level of care and rehabilitation in the Canadians’ system. But while I was so engaged I saw the system (the Borg!) chew up and spit out many many less determined and self-reliant individuals – and saw it kill quite a few of them.

Was I faced today with a choice between leaving similar injuries untreated or being examined by a Canadian "medical practitioner" and admitted to a Canadian "hospital?"

How do you say, in Canuck, "Get me the Hell oot of here, eh?"

So, Dear God, please save us from the un-and-anti-American moronic mobbed-up murtadd Muslim Mussolini-moulded modified Marxist empty galabia, Herr Michelle Reverend Wright Bill Ayres Frank Marshall Davis-Obambi, presently poncing about and bemanuring our once most hallowed house. And from his Crime Family's every fascistic attack upon our beloved fraternal republic's liberties -- including that we be free to chose our own "health-care."

And the Far Abroad

I was then transported back
... to British Columbia and hospitalized for several months while the Canadian "health care" bureaucracy/industry (Whose every "medical practitioner" is a pathological-ideologue graduate of the Joseph Goebbels-inspired Insurance-Clerical School of any Alternative you can come up with to Medicine) struggled with fact, with truth, with the limits placed on them by their own stupidity and with the brilliance of the twenty-eight (Denver, Colorado and Santa Monica, California) American Health Professionals to whom I constantly referred -- and with my determination to not let the basta*rds get away with their criminal behavior.

Which criminal behavior included that the insurance-clerical bureaucracy (its "medical practitioner" bureaucrats and its "lawyer" bureaucrats included) in its efforts to rid itself of any and all liability, willfully made itself an accessory after the fact of the aircraft operator's original criminal negligence, filed false police and other reports and from whole cloth created and filed endless other false reports, committed serial and systemic perjuries and the systemic subornation of perjuries and continuously, for the ensuing ten years, threatened me with and/or subjected me to every imaginable kind of persecution, including attempted -- and subsequently on-the-public-record-admitted -- false criminal prosecution.

Had I been caused my injuries a few miles south, in America, there is no doubt I would have been awarded Millions of Dollars in damages.

Nationalised health care
Britain's nationalised health care is so good that many (1000's) Brits come to South Africa every year for medical operations in our private hospitals. These procedures range from removing tonsils to avoiding long waiting lists to serious operations that British Health consider experimental. National Health just doesn't work!

That said I do think there is room for state run health clinics, run by nurses. To those who can't afford medical insurance they offer advice, basic medication and shots, antenatal checks and act as a first port of call refering more serious cases to hospitals or doctors.

There are many basic medical needs that Americans run to doctors or emergency rooms for when the sound advice of a nurse or even pharmicist would be fine. This would alleviate the time pressures of medical facilities and would in fact improve quality because much of their services are preventative. (I have an aunt who worked in one for many years in South Africa - it had a big impact on the local poor community.)

The willful criminal negligence of the
... ... Canadian owner of the aircraft I was, some years ago, flying in British Columbia, resulted in major structural failure and, during the subsequent forced landing, on the side of a forest covered mountain, to my being caused major multiple injuries, including to my head, (including a subdural hematoma, similar to that as the consequence of which the grossly incompetent Canadian "health-care" industry recently condemned the actress, Natasha Richardson, to death) twenty-two smashed teeth and to neck, shoulders, back, arm, hand and leg injuries, in a detached sternum and in nine broken ribs. The "medical practitioner" on duty at the local (Kolowna) hospital to which I was (on my own Nickel) helicoptered, examined me, perfunctorily X-Rayed me and discharged me to a local motel. Several months later head-injury and other specialists at Denver's Swedish Brain and Spinal Injury Center and at Colorado University Hospital conducted MRI scanning and comprehensive other tests and diagnosed among many other ongoing issues secondary and tertiary to the injuries I had been caused (and most of which I live with still) that an area of my brain was "dead" and that my neck and shoulders and sternum, ribs and leg had never been properly set and/or otherwise dealt with.

(One of the examining specialists, who'd previously been employed at the US Armed Forces Institute of Pathology estimated I'd been subjected to more than 30 Gs of vertical and 40 Gs of horizontal deceleration. He observed that he'd only previously ever seen in corpses the kind of oral damage I'd been caused. Thank God, is all that I can say, that I wasn't Natasha Richardson)

A 10 yr plan to FIX American Healthcare
PHASE1 (1st five yrs)
* Medicare/Medicaid vouchers for the poor and elderly - yes, this perpetuates the status quo, but fairness dictates a short term 'amnesty'
* cease Medicare 'deduction' and employer match
* return the previously extorted Medicare funds (with interest) into the Health Savings Accounts of individuals
* continue tax deductibility of Health Savings Accounts - employers may choose to contribute into the Health Savings Accounts of their employees
* fee for service begins to eliminate the need for insurance companies EXCEPT for catastrophic coverage
* costs start to come down (supply-and-demand at work)

PHASE2 (next five yrs)
* Healthcare vouchers ONLY for the poor and/or for those who are above a certain 'cut-off' age
* tax relief for everyone else
* end tax deductibility of Health Savings Accounts

PHASE3 (the future)
* no more Medicare, Medicaid etc.
* the poor are helped by voluntary, private charity
* Return to fee-for-service
* Health insurance is relegated to its rightful status - as a hedge against catastrophic illness

Opponents will charge that it is too cold & heartless. Inevitably there will be some who can't afford medical care, requiring private charity to intercede on their behalf. In reality, the lower costs would ensure that there would be a decrease in the number of people who can't afford medical care.

Of SCHIPs and lifeboats ..
We are obsessed with 'lifeboats' such as SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program), Universal Health Care, Welfare, Medicare and Public Education. Usually, Leftists begin their arguments with "if America is a compassionate nation, how can we not take care of ____ !"

Leftist solutions almost always rely on higher taxation, which inevitably ensures that MORE people will need (and depend upon) such lifeboats.

Observe how much of our discussion is centered around the few Americans who 'have not'. A visitor from Mars would think that there must be some kind of ongoing calamity in America that causes so much attention to be directed towards relief efforts. The same Martian visitor would simultaneously be confounded by the reality that America is actually quite an affluent, prosperous place. While success in America is by no means guaranteed, a minimal standard of living is reasonably easy to achieve. However, that minimal standard of living does not necessarily include the highest level of Health Care - or filet mignon every night for that matter!

The truth is that whining about compassion makes for great political rhetoric - and not much else. The (D) party has figured out that we Americans are suckers for sanctimonious do-goodery.

Should Atlas Shrug? (Continued)
These words are worth reading (or re-reading) in the current political context, in which Universal Health Care appears to be a foregone conclusion. What would happen to our society, if our brightest minds abandoned the medical profession due to the enslavement that results from the Govt takeover of this field?

Interestingly, the above words also apply to other professions - including those that have become traditionally associated with Governmental institutions, e.g. education.

Should Atlas Shrug?
'Do you know what it takes to perform a brain operation? Do you know the kind of skill it demands, and the years of passionate, merciless, excruciating devotion that go to acquire that skill? That was what I would not place at the disposal of men whose sole qualification to rule me was their capacity to spout the fraudulent generalities that got them elected to the privilege of enforcing their wishes at the point of a gun. I would not let them dictate the purpose for which my years of study had been spent, or the conditions of my work, or my choice of patients, or the amount of my reward. I observed that in all the discussions that preceded the enslavement of medicine, men discussed everything--except the desires of the doctors. Men considered only the "welfare" of the patients, with no thought for those who were to provide it. That a doctor should have any right, desire or choice in the matter, was regarded as irrelevant selfishness; his is not to choose, they said, only "to serve." . . . I have often wondered at the smugness with which people assert their right to enslave me, to control my work, to force my will, to violate my conscience, to stifle my mind--yet what is it that they expect to depend on, when they lie on an operating table under my hands?'

The above words were spoken by Dr. Thomas Hendricks, a fictional surgeon in Atlas Shrugged. This novel was was written by Ayn Rand 50 years ago, during an era in which the medical profession was free - at least relative to modern times.

And who will make your medical decisions
In case you are not aware, even today, many medical "decisions" are dictated by insurance companies who have a registered nurse who may or may not know a thing about your condition, telling the doctor that he/she can or can not order this or that test. If a request for a test goes to the insurance precertification department and the answer is no, then the patient is stuck with a decision...do what the doctor says and pay out of pocket and fight the insruance later, or go home and hope for the best. Some doctors will literally tell the insurance company to stuff it and will go to the medical directors, who generally say ok, but threaten the doctor with a "you had better be right or we will remember this" scene. Now..fast forward to "universal" care. The doctor that would normally buck the system and "care" for his/her patient would not have a job because he would be costing the "plan" more money that his/her peers in the same situation. (I have deja vu of the first HMO packages that came out when family practice doctors were rewarded for not sending their paitents to specialists, even tho the FP doctor was unfamiliar with how to treat the patient's problem!) This means that the only doctors we will be seeing are the little robots that are given a policy that says, "If the patient has this symptom, you do that" and if your symptom is caused by some underlying disease process, you will not be treated for it until another symptom arises to justify testing to determine the underlying disease, and by then, it could be too late for treatment. It is scary to think about the repurcussions of the universal care that is being proposed. And as we are aging, we can forget about having any "care" at all. We will be a drain of the resources!

Buster...
you made my day - you and that student, that is. There IS hope, and I thank you for your gentle reminder.

Here's a thought
Abolish medical insurance both public and private and let the marketplace set the cost of medical care.

Only because we don't
The only reason the other nations are able to HAVE government health care is because the United States doesn't. Our system is providing the new techniques, technologies, therapies and drugs that theirs can't. When their systems get cases they can't handle, they can always sent those cases here.

AND many of the other nations are able to afford government health care only because they don't have to worry about fully funding their military capabilities. They know that the United States will rush to their defense if they need it.

Changing the Incentives and Rules 3
Because of the way they are paid, most doctors and other professional providers, acute care hospitals and long term care facilities, pharmaceutical manufactures and pharmacists, medical and surgical equipment manufacturers, personal injury and malpractice attorneys, and others depend mightily on massive amounts of disease and injury in America.
Unless the incentives and rules are changed to give as many participants as possible a real stake in prevention, early diagnosis and treatment, and maximizing health and minimizing disease and injury, getting healthcare costs under control will never happen. This is the real task of “healthcare reform”.
It is well recognized that engaging in regular exercise, abstaining from tobacco, eating a healthy diet, and maintaining a reasonably normal body weight are all significant factors in helping to promote an individual’s health and wellness. These healthy behaviors can all be easily confirmed by simple tests. Why shouldn’t those individuals who practice these health promoting behaviors pay significantly less for their health insurance?
It may be a formidable task that probably has never really been done previously in a major way in any other country, but I believe the time has come to figure out ways – through changes in incentives and rule changes - to maximize prevention, early diagnosis and treatment, and health, and minimize disease and injury and all the associated costs.

Changing the Incentives and Rules 2
If this system is going to work, rules must be established as to when and how much money may be taken out of the pot (e.g. “legitimate” doctor and hospital bills) as well as how much money must be flowing into the pot each month (premiums) so the pot does not become empty.
We speak about our “Healthcare System” and realize that the continually rising costs we are experiencing are unsustainable. Although a lot of illness and many injuries are actually preventable, for the most part we fail to focus on the fact that other than insurance carriers, employers, and patients and potential patients, few participants in what would more be appropriately called our “Sickness and Injury Care System” have any real incentive to genuinely promote health and prevent disease and injury.
Much to the contrary, because of the way they are paid, most participants in our “Sickness and Injury Care System” have an enormous (if unspoken) incentive for continuing to have massive amounts of disease and injury - the more and the more serious, the better - as long as those diseased and injured individuals are “covered” by “good insurance”, i.e. reliable bill payers.
That is not to say that there are not some excellent and very hardworking doctors and other health professionals - who are generally paid on a fee for service basis - but who nevertheless are attempting to essentially work themselves out of a job by strongly stressing prevention with their patients. And it should be recognized that some existing health systems - such as Kaiser and Group Health - combine insurance, doctors, and hospitals in such a way into a single entity that provides everyone - including doctors - a real incentive for prevention and early diagnosis and treatment. But unfortunately these examples do not apply to most of our sickness and injury care system in America.

Changing the Incentives and Rules
Changing the Incentives and Rules in “Healthcare”

Changing the Incentives and Rules in “Healthcare”

If you have the financial resources of Bill Gates or Warren Buffett you do not need to pay money each month to a health plan which agrees to pay most of your medical bills (unless they can find a way to get out of doing so) in the event you get sick or injured, because you have more than enough money to pay all your medical bills yourself.
But for the rest of us who have significantly less financial resources, a very serious illness or injury - costing perhaps thousands or hundreds of thousands of US greenbacks - could easily have serious or even devastating personal financial repercussions.
Being unable to pay one’s own medical bills in the event of serious illness or injury, most Americans would like to be able to pay a relatively small amount each month (or better yet have their employer do it) to a health plan and be “covered” if any serious illness or injury should occur. Furthermore, if possible, they would like their health plan to also pay for all the preventive care and any checkups they receive while healthy.
Getting someone else pay one’s medical bills seems to be a very common goal for many Americans. Some even think it is a “right” they should enjoy because they are an American citizen or for some, simply because they are a member of the species Homo sapiens.
All members of a health plan put their monthly premium money into a big pot from which “covered” healthcare expenses – as well as administrative expenses including big salaries for CEO’s and other “healthcare executives” - are paid, except for co pays and deductibles which are paid by the individual. Healthy individuals taking little or nothing from the pot essentially pay a lot of the expenses of those who are sick or injured.

I'm getting ready
I'll get prepared for the nightmare that'll be universal health care in the United States.
While someone in my family is dying in an emergency room, a nurse will be taking numbers and is currently trying to communicate with someone speaking Spanish, while she took French in high school. The government will force her to take the illegal alien first.
I'll stop by the bait store and get our family a few hundred leeches. That will be the only medical thing to do in an emergency. Oh by the way grandma, you're over 75, so you get NOTHING

A Saving in the budget
All politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, DC should get their "Medical Care" in Britain or Canada and at THEIR OWN EXPENSE. Can you imagine the savings this would provide in Government expenses.

Leave it to Dr. Sowell ...
.. to get to the heart of the matter.

I'll keep a copy of this column, as I do with many of Dr. Sowell's, to "share" with my liberal friends.

Sharing is supposed to be good according to their philosophy, but they hate it when I do that.

It does create deafening silence for a while from that quarter, though.

Excellent description Dr. Sowell
As always Dr. Sowell explains things in such a way that cuts through all the B.S. used by politicians to indoctrinate and sell the public on Socialistic agenda.

Now we can all watch as the usual Liberals come on here making fools of themselves as they try and discredit this brilliant man!

Free
“Universal Health Care” is only piece of a much bigger problem. Unfortunately (and alarmingly), there are a substantial number of Americans (made up of liberals, the very young & naïve, and those who just don’t care) who actually believe products and services can be made “free” or “provided” by the government. They don’t seem to understand that nothing is "free” and the government has absolutely nothing to provide; the government can only shuffle resources from one person to another.

It’s the same issue with so-called “affordable housing”, welfare, “free” college tuition, etc. Americans mostly agree (and understand the need) to sacrifice some of themselves and their labor for infrastructure, national defense and emergency services, but everything else is simple theft designed to meet the vision of a specific individual or group or to increase/maintain arrogant & selfish power.

All products and services only exist through the labor and toil of others, and no human should have the power to forcefully compel another human to work for “free” ...and then have the power to direct the results of that labor to whomever he deems.

Unfortunately, a truly nonpartisan education of world history (extremely rare) and/or the wisdom acquired by age (for most) are the only cures for many.

A freshman's response
When I asked my students "what can we do about the rising cost of health care?" one student responded "take better care of ourselves." Imagine that! Individual responsibility. Instead, in the Socialist Republic of Obama, we'll continue further down the road to serdom, believing government will make medical care more affordable."The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

Reply to Barbara
That is a terrible story. I'm happy to hear your daughter survived. It is amazing people are willing to cause death to advance a political agenda. I had a friend that had a similar event in Spain - she was in an auto accident and nearly died waiting for care. The hospitals I've volunteered at [in the US] rushed such patients into a room in the ER immediately - not in Spain apparently, you have to wait... you've only been in a deadly car accident after all...

I'm applying to medical school. I only hope that by the time I get out, I won't have both my arms tied behind my back by Lord Obama and his cronies... and have to perform abortions whether I want to or not...

The Bottom Line
It is morally wrong for the State to take away my property to pay for other people's medical treatment. In addition, it is unconstitutional for the Fed'ral Gov't to do so.

British Medical Care
We lived in Saudi Arabia for six years back in the late 70's and early 80's.Our only medical care was thru an English-operated company. all the doctors and nurses were English. We had the worst care in the world. My daughter was 9 months old when she got diarhea. She had it for more than three months. I took her to them more than five times. First they told me to give her a diet of liquids (apple juice, jello, etc.) Then I took her back because she still had diarhea, the nurse said, of course she has diarhea, you've only been giving her liquids. The next time I asked them to see if they had any Pedialite to give her, the nurse said, (Duh) We might have some back here. I was told to bring a stool sample the next time I came. How do you get a stool sample from an infant with diarhea? I took a messy diaper to them. The nurse said "What do you expect us to do with this?" (Duh) again. We finally went back to the US early and had her seen by a real doctor. It's a miracle that she survived. That same year I had extremely profuse bleeding with my period. I was starting to see spots in front of my eyes. My husband took me to the clinic. Since I didn't have an appointment (we had no telephone), they told me I would have to wait until they had seen all of the patients who had appointments. We waited until after noon, then were told that we would have to go to an Arabic hospital because they couldn't see me that day. The Arab hospital was dirty I had to replace the dirty paper on the examining table. But, the doctor was able to give me some medicine to stop the bleeding (I think that it was hormones) until I was able to get to the US to see the doc. We didn't know that in the Arab hospital you were supposed to give the doctor a 'gift.' I actually got better treatment in a third-world-country hospital than I did in the English-operated clinic our company paid to take care of us. Maybe they were expecting a 'gift' too.

Daughter in school
Our daughter is in a UK school to become a PT. She tells me that the big scandel there is how poor the quality of care is. Clearly socialized medicine has not been a step forward everywere.

In BO's world
It’s called culling the herd.

Why?
If socialized medicine is so wonderful--why do so many Canadians cross the border to get medical care in the U.S.

If socialized medicine is so wonderful--why do England, Australia, Finland, etc. have dual systems--private for those who want their surgeries soon and government for those who want to wait a year?

WARNING

A local man went into the emergency room with a nice cut on his leg but not life threatening.

His bill was $20,000 big ones.

I showed this article to a friend at work and he told me his daughter went to an after hours clinic for a stomach ache and they sent her to the hospital.

Her bill was $7,000 big ones.

One of my daughter’s friends at school had a panic attack and went to the hospital and they prescribed the same medicine she had at home.

Her bill was $9,000 big ones.

WARNING: IF YOU DON’T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE DON’T GO TO THE HOSPITAL.

If you wake up and you’re in an ambulance that’s backing up to the hospital

Grab your body parts and put them in your pockets and run.

Yeah
as you said in another article: "If you think health care is expensive now wait until it is 'free'."

Thank you Dr Sowell
You ALWAYS clarify things in a way that evn liberals can understand. They will not elieve it but they undertsand it. I cant wait to read the comments of the many lib dems who will come here and show teir ignorance by demanding universal health care...this is gonna be good
