Random thoughts on the passing scene:

One of the most important skills for political success is the ability to make confident assertions of absurdities or lies.

The adage "follow the money" will be hard to apply in the current administration, when there is so much money going in all directions that it is doubtful whether anybody can follow it.

I hate to hear about "partnerships" between government and business, or between government and other organizations. When there is a partnership between an ant and an elephant, who do you suppose makes the decisions?

There are too many people, especially among the intelligentsia, who will never appreciate the things that have made this country great until after those things have been destroyed-- with their help. Then, of course, it will be too late.

How can a President of the United States be re-elected in a landslide after four years when unemployment never fell below 15 percent for even one month during his first term? Franklin D. Roosevelt did it by blaming it all on the previous administration. Barack Obama may be able to achieve the same result the same way.

Can you name the only baseball player to bat .382 in his last year in the major leagues? The first five readers who can will receive a free copy of my new book, "Applied Economics."

Do you want to have to jump through bureaucratic hoops when you are sick? If not, why would you be in favor of government-run medical care?

The "Wall Street Journal Report" is one of the few things on television worth watching. It is worth it just to see the sardonic smile of Kimberly Strassel whenever she discusses politics.

Democrats could sell refrigerators to Eskimos before Republicans could sell them blankets.

Anyone who wants to understand the housing crisis without getting a headache from reading economic jargon should read the new book "Financial Shock" by Mark Zandi.

Human beings are going to make mistakes, whether in the market or in the government. The difference is that survival in the market requires recognizing mistakes and changing course before you go bankrupt. But survival in politics requires denying mistakes and sticking with the policies you advocated, while blaming others for the bad results.

I know that there are still voices of sanity around because I have counted them-- on one hand.

More frightening to me than any policy or politician is the ease with which the public is played for fools with words. The latest example is the "Employee Freedom of Choice Act," a bill that will do away with secret ballot elections among workers voting on whether to be represented by a union. It is an open invitation to intimidation-- which is to say, loss of freedom of choice.

Our economic problems worry me much less than our political solutions, which have a far worse track record.

One of the wonders of our times is how much more attention is paid to the living conditions of a bunch of cut-throats locked up in Guantanamo than to the leading international sponsor of terrorism getting nuclear weapons.

The great sense of urgency of the Obama administration to get legislation to authorize slow-moving spending projects may seem inconsistent. But the urgency is real, even if the reasons given are not. The worse case scenario for the administration would be to have the economy begin to recover on its own before this massive spending bill is passed, reducing their chances of creating the kind of politically directed economy they want.

I realized how far behind the times I am when I saw a TV commercial for some weight-loss product, showing Marie Osmond "before" and "after." I thought she looked great "before."

War should of course be "a last resort"-- but last in terms of preference, not last in the sense of hoping against hope while dangers grow, and wishful thinking or illusory agreements substitute for serious military preparedness-- or, if necessary, military action. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "If you wait until you see the whites of their eyes, you will never know what hit you."

My husband and I have enjoyed reading your articles for years, especially regarding economics, one of your specialties. Basic Econ was better than any other econ book I read in college, and I am looking forward to buying a copy of Applied Economics, especially in light of all the misinformation being spewed on the airwaves (actually, no information, just hype about the judgement of those who claim to have experts on their side).

Oh and the answer of course is Shoeless Joe Jackson...though I'm probably the 105th reader to respond. Oh, well, buying the book will give me that much more satisfaction towards supporting sane scholarship and literary truth. Thanks again Mr. Sowell, and hang in there!

A Huge Threat Looming
A huge threat to our basic freedoms is looming in the House. Please take a look at the BLAIR HOLT FIREARM LICENSING & RECORD ACT OR 2009, HR #45. This bill is the initial step to destroy the basic freedoms granted in the Bill of rights. The basic points of the Bill:

ALL firearms must be registered with federal government.

ALL owners will be fingerprinted under Federal Control.

You must register your drivers license number.

You must register your SSN.

You will have to agree to a physical and/or mental exam that can be ordered by the Federal Government at any time.

Each change of ownership must be re-registered at a $25 cost.

All firearms in a home with a minor child must be "properly secured".

Anyone with registered firearms in the home are subject to onsite inspection by Federal authorities at anytime of their choosing to insured that weapons are properly "secured".

Failure to meet these restrictions on firearm ownership can cause a fine or imprisonment up to 5 years.

I have no problem with local, State directed firearm registration as most states have currently. However, this is a centralized, Federal Government system. Please investigate for yourself. Contact your Senator and Representative.

This scary Bill appears to be the first step in eliminating the right to bear arms. eliminating an armed citizenery has been a major step in the advancement of tyrannical dictatorships.

I wanted him to succeed and still do, but given his first 22-23 days, I hold little hope for change in him. Spreading the Message
One of Obama's great gifts is the ability to say things in a manner that we understand. He may be saying things that we consider tough to hear, he may be obfuscating a central message, and his message may do great harm to this country in a long-term manner, but at least we understand what he's saying. Most people do not understand what a politician is saying, so if you can give them a limb for why they should accept it, they are a lot more apt to acquiesce.

I have said for years that a federal law should require immediate imprisonment for a period of no less that 90 days for each infraction of the following. "No Congressman or Senator or any aide, employee or representative of the same shall at any time refer to any pending legislation by any other name other than 'house bill' or 'senate bill' followed by the appropriate number.

Thomas is always inspiring, but how can we stop the train from coming if the headlights have been turned off as well as the power? Has Barack obama said one word about the majority of White Americans who are suffering from the severe cold and dying or those who have suffered for weeks in states like Kentucky without power and water? Yet, the far left liberals bashing President Bush over the Katrina disaster, but remain silent on the issue of Obama breaking his promises to use the tax money to help the people by redistributing the wealth. He appears to be looking the other way at a natural disaster while he jets around and parties and the American people suffer after spending $170,000,000 of our taxes on his inauguration in a economic crisis? Where's the redistribution of the wealth headed - I'm afraid to the top and I doubt that there will be much trickling down for "Peggy the Moocher" who needs her rent and gas paid because she believed Obama's promises like those who are losing their homes and jobs because the government and bankers with the help of ACORN stole our taxes. And, no one's held accountable for the biggest heist on American ever, but rewarded - and Obama doesn't care that millions are headed into the hands of ACORN rather than sent to those without power? That should frighten every citizen in this country!

Read your constitution
Hey Phylo, the government is supposed to be responsible for the military. So yes those military contract jobs are perfectly legit. Now I believe it is the libs that want to downsize the military and the spending as well which seems to me would elimninate some of those jobs. But it is not the government's role to then try to create jobs in other areas. Promote the general welfare as opposed to provide for it. Provide was used in describing the role government has with respect to the common defense.

The web site baseball-reference.com shows that he batted .257 in 1905, his last season. By the way, in 1901 he batted .376, and I didn't find any year that he batted .382. Anyway, it was an enjoyable exercise for baseball history fans.

Mr. Sowell, How do you get your message out there when the media
won't allow your message to get through. I always thought from the revolution on; the message of America came from letters to the editors of newspapers. However, when your message is short-circuited what alternatives have you. You can get your message to
people of your own persuasion, but how do you influence the die-hard liberals. So far, the liberals are winning and they will be death of this great country, that I love.

Here's "Hope":
I hope we still have a functioning Constitution by the time mid-term elections come around. The way he's packing his administration with cheats and hard-leftists, and emasculating the positions to which he appoints republicans, we are not going to have a justice system left to protect the citizenry anymore. It will be a justice system in direct service of the president's wishes. Obama is Blagojevich on steroids. Blago was a rank amateur compared to this guy. Peaceful, seamless transition? Sure - big government spending will increase GDP because government spending is in GDP.

But that is not to say that GDP could have grown by more with big spending in the private sector. This is the rub. Who gets to decide where our money goes.

Me - I like the "I get to decide" method. But that's just me.

As for Government managed health being more efficient - ask the Brits. They are in the best position to provide a perspective on government health care.

Early indication from the Brits would tell you that it is really bad. And the Daschle plan is modeled after the UK.

Your post at 3:03 and to a lesser extent at 1:30 may not have explicitly defended Obama. But they took the tone that all the problems of the world were Bush and the republican's fault. Your responses were interjected in arguments where one side was subject to tingling leg syndrome due to the aura of Obama and contra to Berean77 who was arguing against Obama and his actions. So it would be easy to understand how you were taken to be an Obamaton.
When you responded to many posts by Bob_C and myself, you immediately made the argument that Bush and republicans must be held responsible and accountable, even though the discussion was on the damage Obama might do if he has his way. This continued for many iterations, even though we continuously agreed that republicans were culpable for damages already done or set in motion. It sounded like shades of Bush Derangement Syndrome. Am I wrong? Where do you stand with respect to Obama, the democrat controlled congress and their plans?

I'm trying to explain that Absolute Reality transcends any distinction between subject and object. I'm trying to explain that the subject/object distinction, while compelling on a surface level, is ultimately illusory.

But never mind. I think this subject matter is a little too deep and subtle for you.

By the way, Bell's Theorem is not a theory. Do you know the difference? And it's an experiment that involves just a few facts and some basic mathematics. It has been repeated hundreds, if not thousands of times; each time with the same result. It is far more solid than even quantum theory, which is arguably the most successful theory every developed by man.

Look it up. If it doesn't shock you, you don't understand it's implications.

It was the Republican-controlled Congress of the 1990's, six of Bubba's eight years had a Republican Speaker of the House, the last six and most important.

Those Clinton administration defense cuts were actually Republican-controlled Congress defense cuts. These defense cuts put this nation in grave danger and led to 911. This country was unprepared because of Republican defense cuts.

If you want America put in danger, then vote Republican.

If these odious and evidently godless Republicans are willing to lie about our national security can they be trusted about telling the truth regarding anything?

Please don't misunderstand. I'm not trying to defend Bush, Reagan, or anyone else. What I'm asking you is why you are defending Obama for continuing the same ridiculously destructive policies that have been in effect since FDR.

Greenspan's book is, like any other egomaniac who writes books about themselves, designed to make him look good. I take books like that with a grain of salt.

One does not have to be a genius economist to understand that it is the GOVERNMENT (not "Republicans" or "Democrats") that has gotten us into this economic disaster and that a continuation of the same policies that got us here is not the way out.

I'm sure his opinion is completely unbiased. He is also part of the CFR, which is a concern for many people. But if you mention CFR or the evil that is the FED, you are an un-American nut case, right?

I have no doubt that Greenspan is very knowledgeable and very intelligent. I wouldn't claim to have better economic credentials than him. But, I'm not sure he wasn't corrupted along the way.

I don't disagree, but I don't recall seeing that on anybody's agenda in Congress or the WH. Did I miss it?

It will likely never happen, but I'd like to see every piece of legislation that creates a new federal agency or cost center or program of any kind require a sunset clause that will require periodic review and renewal of the legislation. I know it would create some uncertainty for business and individuals, but I believe the benefit of sunsetting bad legislation would outway the negative impact of the uncertainty.

The national debt of the USA is no laughing matter. Perhaps you have better economic credentials than Alan Greenspan, then again, perhaps not.

Mr. Greenspan presents a damming indictment of Republican 'cut taxes and spend even more' philosophy.

And now for some quotes from 2001 from Mr. Alan Greenspan's 'Age of Turbulence.'

We start on page 213, enter George 'W' Bush.

"The other issue looming large for the Fed was the disappearance of the national debt. Strange as it may seem in hindsight, in January 2001 the possibility was real. Nearly a decade of rising productivity and growth and budget discipline had put the U.S. government in a position to generate surplus's 'as far as the eye could see,' to borrow the phrase coined by President Reagan's budget director David Stockman in projecting deficits nearly two decades earlier. Even allowing for the recession that might now be setting in, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office was getting ready to raise its projection of the surplus to a stunning $5.6 trillion over ten years. This was $3 trillion higher than the CBO had forecast in 1999, and $1 trillion more than it had predicted just the previous July."

Let's not forget that Ronald Reagan appointed Greenspan to be Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

-Cutting taxes.
-Enlarging government (Obamanomics includes nationalization of health care and banking)
-HUGE deficit spending that makes Bush look like a tightwad
-Billions of dollars openly donated to special interests, like ACORN

Wars are expensive. Abraham Lincoln created the first national income tax, WWI saw income taxes go up, WWII saw income taxes go through the roof.

Every country in this world is preparing for nuclear war, and you'd better believe it. Keep googling CIA and FBI files and read. Terrorists are spreading nuclear technology and bomb materials all over the world. It's unstoppable and growing rapidly. They can dig an underground bunker and start the process of making bombs, anywhere in any country. It is smart of our government to position our military and defense weapons in Iraq(on one side of Iran), and in Afghanistan(on the other side of Iran). Because of this, if Iran gets out of line we can squash their a**es. And they will(get out of line), sooner or later. Ya'll be good to each other.

Very true, we need to un-commit to being the world's policeman. We can't afford it anymore and they can fend for themselves.

Let's take a look at the USA defending Europe. Below, are a few facts and a question.

Ron Paul, for example, may have had issues or blinders in some areas, but the crux of his message on foreign policy was completely distorted. And the only reason democrats aren't into nation building overseas is because the people overseas don't vote. Look at how the dems (with a few complicit reps like McCain and Graham) want to add millions of illegal aliens to the citizenship rolls in spite of the fact that they are a net drain on the economy and are not interested in assimilating. As far as I can tell, the dems only want to divert the money spent in offshore ratholes to domestic ratholes. But a rathole is still a rathole!

Yes, the GOP spent too much money over the course of 8 years. The democrats, in turn, will spend even more money OVERNIGHT! So long as they don't spend any more money over the next 8 years, the stakes will even out.

Unlike the war on terror, however, B.O.'s projects will not prevent another 9/11. Of course I'm being paranoid. Terrorist will never attack the U.S. now that we halted all those horrible interrogation techniques.

Apparently the honey bee population has been impacted by a phenomenon known as catastrphic colony collapse. This is a serious matter since honey bees pollinate a significant proportion of plants that contribute to our food supply. Whether or not this is something deserving gubmint action is a legitimate question, but an "economic stimulus" bill is not appropriate vehicle to do this.

What is your point? The republicans are big spenders. The democrats are big spenders. Politicians as a rule benefit from being big spenders. The general population is generally worse off, though the damage may not be obvious and it may be delayed.

Are you arguing that the mess we are in, regardless of who is responsible, will be solved by more cavalier spending? Are you arguing that the democrat spending proposals will somehow right the wrongs caused by republican spending? I ( and many of us on here, I suspect) just want all the spending to end. What has already been spent is gone. There is an expression that might apply... "Don't throw good money after bad," but it may be that our money isn't much good for much longer, making that moot.

It was Republicans (2001-2007) who spent more than the Democrats. They increased pork barrel spending from 3,000 to 14,000 projects a year, NOT PAID FOR.

They have engaged in a five and half year social engineering project in the Middle East that costs $120 billion a year and may well last another 100 years, NOT PAID FOR.

They have added another layer of entitlement spending that costs $50 billion a year called Medicare Prescription, NOT PAID FOR.

Mandated $4 billion a year in ethanol subsidies, as well as drastically increased cotton, sugar, soybean, corn, wheat handouts, NOT PAID FOR.

Doubled the size of the Department of Education, NOT PAID FOR.

Legislative Titles
A good rule to institute in both houses of Congress would be:

If one party authors a bill, the opposing party gets to name the title of the legislation.

The "Employee Freedom of Choice Act" might then come out as the "Employee Fear of Choosing Act".

The Fairness Doctrine might be the Fairness Demolition.

And the Stimulus Bill could come out as the Strangle Us Bill.

Maybe we would have more "bi-partisan" legislation, or maybe we would have simply less legislation - and that could be very beneficial.

The 30s, and now
Maybe Shlaes does not major on GDP because that issue is not in doubt. If you spend big money, the GDP will go up. If we all went out tomorrow and maxed out our credit cards, the GDP would go up. That doesn't make it the right thing to do.

When the government spends like this, where does the money come from? It either comes from the private sector, or becomes a future obligation on the people. In the first case, for good or bad, jobs may be created but they are at the expense of other jobs that would be created as a result of that capital flowing to normal enterprise. In the second case, the result is an interest burden and/or inflation (which is where I believe we are eventually heading).

The US in the 30s was victimized by bad policies (by Hoover and Roosevelt), but was fundamentally set up to be an industrial powerhouse, and a net exporter of profitable goods. We can argue about whether is was necessary for FDR to do what he did and whether the economy would have recovered better with different policies, and we won't get anywhere.

"Meaning" is a subjective term. It doesn't have any relationship with the state of reality. Atoms don't require humans to exist and that's not what Capra meant in that out-of-context snippet you quoted. Human observers are not required for the universe to function at any level.

If mankind was wiped out in an instant in a planetary collision it wouldn't alter the universe in any way. The "laws" of physics would still function in our absense, stars would form and die, galaxies collide, and the universe would go on unaffected by the absense of humans who have the unbelievable arrogance to believe that they're anything more than a runaway mold on a blue and green sphere hanging in space.

By the way, Bell's Theorem is just that - a theorem, and has hardly been proven - even in part - and certainly nothing to base a philosophy upon.

Spending Money...
Spending Money, trillions of dollars, is one stupid way to end a credit crisis. Is that we can expect from the Obamabots?

First we need to cut taxes so everyone can keep/spend their own money (that is normally stolen from them), then second we hunt down ALL the crooked scum that caused this problem or profited by it and hang them (no trial necessary). Third we toss out all leaders in Congress and the bureaucracy and start over...and no one tossed out or their cronies can reapply.

This is a good start, kinda like the bus loaded with the lawyers going over a cliff...

GDP is the most comprehensive way of measuring the strength of an economy. Of course, that's why Amity Shlaes ignores GDP and focuses on the Dow and the unemployment rate. They are less indicative of the relative strength of an economy, but they fit her argument better so, she used those numbers.

Amity Shlaes book seems to be the result of people in some conservative think tank saying "You know, FDR's big government spending programs actually did work, but we don't want people to believe that because then they might want to try it again. Can you come up with a book that undermines and discredits the New Deal's effectiveness?"

I'm normally not a fan of bigger government. I'm for whatever works well. If, as in the case of health care, it is better and more efficient, I'm for it. And the evidence does seem to suggest that it is better and more efficient. But I don't want government micro managing every aspect of the economy. And I don't like people getting money for nothing. And I hate deficit spending. I want to see a balanced budget. But under the current circumstances, the government is the only entity capable of spending money right now. And if it's done well, it will stop the slide, bring back confidence thus growing the economy. Then we can start to pay down the debt. And, yes, that might require raising taxes a bit. And I don't like that either. But you have to do what you have to do.

I agree that changing times may require changes in how we govern. But the Constitution has a process for amendments. By ignoring that process, we make the Constitution a sham. Maybe we need to make the Constitution easier to amend.

But the danger is that we drift from a nation governed by a rule of written law, to one that is governed by personality, power, and influence.

There is an even more foundational question at hand - what is the role of government? That is at the heart of the Constitution's fundamental purpose. That is the great divide in the current crisis.

In many ways I agree. No one can deny that contemporary political thought has rendered that Amendment meaningless. However, I believe in a strong central government and since many modern issues transcend state borders, the federal government must intervene. That doesn’t mean I want the Feds to control everything. They have gone too far in many cases and there are many laws that should be handed back to the states to decide and enforce.

My question though is more to the point of how many folk strive for a black and white existence. The Constitution is malleable. That is why we have an independent Judicial Branch. It’s not so malleable as to allow radical new interpretations; but the courts, combined with the amendment process do allow for the Constitution to meet problems in the future that we can’t conceive today.

What he's saying is that, according to physicists, subject and object are ultimately inseparable.

Bell's Theorem actually proves that space and time are illusory.

What would I say is not malleable? The Constitution is not supposed to be malleable, sir. That is the point of a constitution.

But when you can take one clause (such as the general welfare clause, or interstate commerce provision) and make it mean whatever you want to justify your chosen policy, that destroys the plain intent of the Constitution.

Phylo: As if you don't have to jump through bureaucratic hoops with private insurers. And do you like paying all of that money for insurance only to have the insurance company claim that you don't qualify for your necessary procedure because you had a "previous condition"? And do you like paying twice as much per capita as the French for a health care system that is inferior to France's?

If you don't like your private insurer, at least there is a choice. The federal government would turn health care into a monopoly - no choice. No appeal. No freedom to seek alternate care for a loved one. Even Canadians can still come to the Cleveland Clinic to avoid waiting months to get treatment, but if the US goes over, they will lose out too. There are more MRI machines in the Philadelphia area than in all of Canada.

Good question, but does it matter? They have all contributed and/or will contribute greatly to the general deterioration and (God help us)possible destruction of this great country. This is where faith in party has driven us.

There is little difference between the democrat party and the republican party. They have established an environment where there is little choice for true independents. And they have created a class of self-proclaimed independents with minimal convictions who move freely between republicans and democrats depending upon who is best serving their immediate (and usually craven) interests. The parties and their leaders are driven by the need for political power and that leads to pandering for votes. Few politicians really have the interest of the country or their constituents at heart and those that do are usually marginalized for the sake of the party.

With Leahy pitching the idea of "investigating" various aspects of the Bush administration, it looks as though the Obama administration has already put in place a mechanism to blame Bush for everything that has or will go wrong during both the Bush and the Obama administration. It will also take another 80 years for historians and economists to realize what happened; just as it has taken 70 years for historians to realize how inept FDR was. If WW2 hadn't arrived to save our economy, we would have continued to suffer under his economic policies until the next war/conflict.

Their perception of YOU is what changed their behavior, not the other way around. If they didn't notice you standing there leering at them, their behavior wouldn't have changed and you'd have had your show continue on to the climactic finish so to speak.

It comes across to me that a lot of the liberal posters here at TH post simply because they have an audience who will respectfully (usually) engage them and try to have a good debate.

Also, a lot of them like to hear the sound of their own voice (the appearance of their written words). Very few times do I see a thoughtful debate that doesn't degenerate into obnoxious name-calling and ad hominem attacks. This is why I don't post very much but do enjoy reading the articles and some of the comments.

My daughter did not look at Hillsdale as she wanted a small school close to home. With Bethel's reputation and proximity (25 miles) it made sense for her.

Try seeing our government from a neutral position (it’s hard) but neither party lives up to what’s coming out of their mouth.

List the things the Democrats say about the Republicans and then list what the Republicans say about the Democrats throw out the statements that are extreme and you’ll see some of the truth about how Washington D.C. works.

1) A liberal must use his/her brain, instead of his/her emotions and gut feelings;
2) A liberal must back up his/her statements with facts instead of fancies;
3) A liberal must not call any other commentator by names that are intended to pigeon-hole them as less than human;
4) A liberal must not preach, teach, urge, communicate or in any other fashion put forth the myth that Barack Obama is God, the Messiah, the New FDR, the Savior of the World or the Conqueror of all evils; (after all liberal do want to do away with religion);

Another great article and to the point. I think that the problem with all of this is that there is no plan and there are no solid dimensions to put into effect to solve any economic crisis that is related to spending or extended credit. The housing crisis was caused by the governments efforts to give everybody a home whether they could afford it or not. Now we're going to throw a bunch of money against the wall and hope it does some good.

I am not against all Nationalized Data Banks, specifically, those that assist law enforcement to keep Americans safe. But unless I give MY PERMISSION and the government pays for ALL my Health Care, barry and his liberal left co-conspirators have NO RIGHT (nor is it any of their business) to have, monitor or make Health Care decisions for me based on my Health History.
Not only would a government mandated and run Nationalized computerized Health Records Data Base (of every person living in America) be Unconstitutional, it would be the Piracy of Privacy. And it's use to determine 'allowable' or 'deniable' Health Care, procedures and treatments for each and every one of us, is DISCRIMINATION far greater and worse than any other 'Discrimination' our Country has ever known.
THIS mandated Health Records Data Base Provision was slipped in and hidden in the Pork Package Bill, barry so urgently cries to be passed. Have the American people been given this information? Not by the mainstream media, we haven't. WHY? so it becomes law and too late to debate, challange or defeat.
The politicians and wealthy elite will be 'exempt' from this Provision, so it's no skin off their noses that all the rest of us are subject to being denied needed or urgent medical treatment or procedures because it's much more 'cost effective' for us to just die.
The 'Change' the majority 'Hoped' for? It's called 'The governments Grand Plan of Discriminatory Extermination'.

I also do not like the idea of a government and business partnership. It reminds me too much of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The original "stimulus" bill included funding for contraception and government regulation of medical care (under the guise of electronic medical records). This would essentially give government control over who gets born and who dies, all in the name of distributing resources. Pelosi said as much. Daschle wrote about it in his book. This despite the fact that government refuses to address the burden of illegal immigration on the resources of this nation. I worry that some of "the things that have made this country great" are already disappearing.
