Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A brief glimmer of sanity among Congressional Republicans has been followed, almost immediately, by a return to the more traditional Washington insanity.

Last week, every single Republican in the House of Representatives voted against the Obama administration's "stimulus" package-- which had stimulated an orgy of runaway spending by Congressional Democrats on everything from sports arenas to sexually transmitted diseases.

This was a rare smart move by the Republicans. If the Republicans had gone along, pursuing the will o' the wisp of "bipartisanship," then if the stimulus had by some miracle succeeded, it would have been a bill for which Democrats would claim credit at the next election.

On the other hand, if the stimulus failed-- which seems far more likely-- then it would be called a "bipartisan" bill, meaning that the Democrats would pay no price at the next election for a colossal failure.

Since President Bush started the "stimulus package" game, this was also an opportunity for Congressional Republicans to cut themselves loose from the political baggage of the Bush administration's unpopularity.

Within 24 hours, however, Republicans in the Senate came out with a plan to have the government fix mortgage interest rates at four percent-- and use taxpayers' money to cover the losses that lenders would otherwise sustain.

It is painfully obvious that government intervention in the housing markets over the past several years has been at the heart of the boom and bust that has led to a huge economic downturn.

It was not the market, but the government, that pushed for abandoning traditional standards for making mortgage loans. That was what got both borrowers and lenders way out on a limb-- and set off economic shock waves when the limb broke.

The last time the Republicans pushed for price controls was during the Nixon administration. It was very popular in the short run. But, in the long run, even Nixon admitted in his memoirs that it was bad for the country.

Price controls have been tried and failed, in countries around the world, going all the way back to ancient Rome and Babylon. Moreover, politicians intervening in the economy is the hallmark of Democrats.

What principle separates the Republicans from the Democrats? If they are just Tweedledee and Tweedledum, then elections come down to personality and rhetoric. If that happens, you can bet the rent money on the Democrats winning.

Those considered to be the smart money among Republicans have been saying for some time that the party has to become more "inclusive" and jettison "outmoded" principles of the Reagan era. But no one has to pass an IQ test to be considered part of the smart money.

Looking at the track record, rather than the rhetoric, the smart money doesn't look nearly as smart.

When have the Republicans won big? When they stood for something and told the people what that something was.

Ronald Reagan was the classic example. But another example would be the stunning Republican victories in the 1994 Congressional elections, which put them in control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years.

Articulating the message of Newt Gingrich's "contract for America" was a key to that historic victory.

Too many Republicans seem to think that being "inclusive" means selling out your principles to try to attract votes. It never seems to occur to them that you can attract a wider range of voters by explaining your principles in a way that more people understand.

That is precisely what Reagan did and what Gingrich did in 1994. Most Americans' principles are closer to those of the Republicans than to those of the Democrats.

It is the only advantage the Republicans have. The Democrats have the media, the unions, the environmental extremists and the tort lawyers on their side. Why should Republicans throw away their one advantage by becoming imitation Democrats?

The Problem Isn't Dem vs Republican
The Problem is globalists in the CFR who run BOTH parties in DC and every administration in DC versus We the American People. Whether we elect DEMS or Republicans, the CFR has rigged the election to guarantee that only CFR candidates will be financially supported and run for office. Until so-called "conservatives" in talk radio, tv, and on townhall address this issue, they cannot possibly be considered "conservative" in the least. The CFR is a subversive, anti-American one-world government organization which has approximately 4,000 members. It is comprised of virtualy all major MSM media anchors, moguls, CEO's and news chiefs. The New York Tims, Time magazine, the Washington Post, Newsweek magazine, the US News and World Report, CBS, NBC, PBS, Disney/ABC, and Fox News parent company, News Corp, Rupert Murdoch himself, Time Warner's CEO, globalist CEO's of major corporations, international bankers and CEO's of the finance houss of Wall Street and countless US Senators, Representatives, and State Department and Cabinet officials have membership in this subversive organization. Even Newt Gingrich is in this organization. There is no small coincidence that BOTH parties support Illegal Immigration and the North American Union. There is no small coincidence that ALL major news media - including Fox News, Hannity, and Limbaugh - do not report on the North American Union except the Courageous Lou Dobbs show on CNN.

Political Brainwashing
It seems that whenever anyone gets into office they immediately get a "big daddy" complex of being everything to everyone. They never listen to the old saying "trying to please everyone will end up pleasing no one". People like someone with backbone even when they don't agree. The "daddy" that always give the kid what they want whenever they want it will end up with no respect. I hope Steele will whip the Republicans back into shape.

Reply to Take Back The Gubmint.....

history is unfolding as it should....peace be to you and yours....there's a bright and glorious future ahead!

Congressional Investigation
In the pass 8 years, Congressional Democrats (and their media) have demanded the investigation of anything and every thing that smelled like it could make Republicans look bad; Plame, Oil Prices, Katrina, CEO Pay…you name it. Why then are they not demanding an investigation of the current “worst then the great depression” financial crisis?

Are they afraid of what will be found?

If I was fortunate enough to be living off a Trust Fund, welfare or had a wealthy family supporting me, I would be in front of the Capitol with my other easy street friends waving signs demanding an investigation of this fiasco. “Stop breaking the law of Economics”?

Alas, be it as it may, I must work to support myself and pay the taxes that keep these loons in Congress…unlike some of the Democrats tax evaders.

TakeBack
Those who say,"There is no conspiracy" are either part of the conspiracy,or they just don't see the Bigger Picture.(Hint:It started in the Garden of Eden.)

No Moral Foundation
From Ravi Zacharias's web site.

"C.S. Lewis's book The Abolition of Man opens with a chapter titled "Men Without Chests... 'Lewis latched onto this. He said, "The frightful thing about Gaius and Titius is that they are telling me mathematics is real; therefore, my brain is real. Food is real; therefore, my stomach is real. But the absolute moral order is not real. It is purely within me.' Says Lewis, 'If I take these men in their arguments, they will produce a generation of men with brains, men with stomachs, men with no heart, men without chests.'

Lewis is right. When we rob the universe of a moral structure, we rob our own hearts. And to connect this to yesterday's thoughts on wonder as the first component of meaning we may say: When naturalism robs this world of its God-given design and essential goodness, we are robbed of our own capacity for wonder, and thereby we are crippled in our search for meaning."

We've been quite adapt in our education, in our media, and in our culture in producing 'men without chests', men without courage and integrity because they lack a moral center. Democrats long ago became enslaved to a godless, immoral philosophy of life (weltanschung). There's still a battle for the soul of the Republican party. The question is, who will win? The 'pragmatists' willing to do whatever it takes to 'win' or those who believe that there is a moral foundation to this world and that we need to line up, as a nation, with that moral foundation.

The BIG PICTURE...POWER GRABBERS
#1 problem is the UN's agenda 21 and it's influence on the USA and the libs following blindly the crapola that's in it.
#2 POWER has been taken from the states and the people and given to self serving politicians with an expansive growth coming just like when Lincoln suspended habeaus corpus and FDR's huge power grab, the elected socialist is going to make the same type of proclomation.Excpet his is being brought up by FL's D,H,Hastings in the form of HR 645.
The Bailout is going to ruin the USA NOT save it..In America you have the equal right to fail as well as suceede well, they failed now it's time to throw the bums out and start all over.

May I remind you of these words:

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to desolve the political bands which have connected them with another.....

that whenever any form of governemnt becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it...

But when a LONG TRAIN OF ABUSES and usurpations pursuing invariably the same object envinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right it is their duty, to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security....
Declaration of Independence july 4.1776

Dr. Sowell, Conservative March I
Let's hope Michael Steele will get the conservative media to start organizing the message. We need to start the campaign to point out the obvious results we are headed for on every level. The reasons for sustained major unemployment, rising gas and food prices, the continuation of housing deflation, taxes on everything and everybody and who keeps them in place (Oblaba & Co), the poor foreign policy message starting with the apology BS (expect plenty of ammunition daily from this commie), immigration costs and their supporters (not the poor hard worker and his children but the criminals, welfare cheats, medical strain, Mexican govt, reconquista agitators) and by all means the new govt policy on abortion front and center and how many babies were pulled out and left to die or had their brains sucked or drilled.

Conservative March II
The more we can tie the original market breakdown on the dims actions and BO's negative campaign the better. We don't have to sing Cumbiyah because he's part of the problem and not part of the solution. We told everybody that before November and its coming true every day. That should be the conservative rallying cry. On dims, rinos, pmm (Propaganda media machine), unions, minorities, feminazis, academics, celebrities, whoever. Everywhere they attacked Bush and Oblaba is the same or worse call them on it. Get candidates for Senate and Congress now and out front with this message. We have to stop the madness now and start informing people who to get mad at and why. Sean is a machine gun with a solid message, Rush is a genius analyzer but with too much leaning to entertainment than leading in any meaningful way and Levine, Hewitt, Gallegher, Prager, Medved, Ingraham seem to have their own pockets of influence at various times. We need to make the news of the day the economy and global impacts of the dim catastrophe understood on every medium we can organize. This bureaucratic nightmare has got to stop. We got screwed in 95 by the Clintonista machine and the Oblabamania is even more formidable with his smoozing and Reaganesque teflon.

The Big Lie
So all the House Republicans voted against screwing America to the wall with that monstrosity of a stimulus bill. I will wager that when all is said and done a bunch of RINOs will have signed on. Any true conservative and anyone that has taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and meant it would be voting against 99.9 percent of the crud that hits the floor of the house.

If socialism produced a better world we would have been using it all along. It doesn't work, won't this time and when it produces misery what will the geniuses in DC foist on us? Too many people in America are convinced they can make a living sticking their hand in their neighbor's pocket. The willingness to believe that lie will ruin us all.

Senate Republicans!!
Get your act together or there will conservatives sitting the next one out and you are done for.

To: Take Back the Government
Will you conspiracy theorists make up your mind which organization is the one that is actually plotting to take over the world? I don't know which one to fight:

Is it "The Club of Rome"?
The "illuminate"?
or the CFR?

Its obvious the world can't go horribly wrong without some conspirators to guide it and control it. We can't lose our freedom by our own stupidity we need leaders to deceive us and undermine us. Its just that there are so many groups that have been blamed -- OH yeah I missed the Catholic Church or maybe its the Jews -- Hitler thought the Jews were the cause. Help I am confused about who I should fear or fight!

Heads they win, tails we lose
If the stimulus package fails to pass and the economy rallys the MSM's headline will be "How much sooner could we have recovered?". If it passes (and another passes and another) and we go another decade in the tank we will hear how it would have been so much worse if we had done nothing.

Republicans as Democrats
I have felt this way for the last 8 years. In the sprit of Ronald Reagan, I didn't leave the republican party it left me. I have a suggestion to Senate Republican next time you reach across the aisle please stay there, we don't need you.

Republicans in the Senate?
This is a joke right? The only way you can spell Republicans in the Senate is "OPPORTUNISTS."

Never has a gang of such weak-principled self-promoting characters pretended to be for America in the history of this land.

One gets the feeling that as kids the alway felt stupid for choosing the red white and blue bumper car at the carnival when they really wanted the all red one.

Dr Sowell keep shining your light

Dr Sowell you may be a voice in the wilderness, but keep speaking - God Bless you sir.

Advice to America from 63 BC

"To avoid bankruptcy, Rome's budget must be balanced; debt reduced; arrogance of authorities moderated; payments to foreign governments reduced; people must learn to work, instead of living on public dole." Cicero. 63BC

Application of Cicero's statement to Rome, to America almost 2100 years later.

1) Require the American Government to balance its budget.

2) Require the American Government to reduce its debt.

3) Require the American politicians to serve the citizen, instead of the citizen serving the politicians.

4) Require the American Government to stop payments to foreign governments, especially those foreign governments that want America destroyed.

5) Require the American Government to stop paying citizens to not work or pay taxes.

Simple but excellent advice.

Obama Wants America to Fail

If you don't believe that Obama wants America to fail, try the Obama Doctrine of Economics in your own life.

President Obama believes that 'Borrowing More Money and Spending More Money' will help America reduce debt and bring financial health to America.

If you can't pay your Credit Card debt, just follow the Obama Economic Plan and charge more on those credit card and apply for more credit cards to charge on.

It may take sometime as Obama explains, but soon you will be debt free and in good financial health.

Obama says don't delay, do it now, do it today, time is wasting.

Spot On
Republicans Take Note! This is exactly what gave King George and his court tanking approval ratings and cost the Rep the White House and the Congress! No Clear Difference, Democrats Win! You think this might wake up the RNC?

Right On
Said it all perfectly Mr.Sowell!Roger

You forgot the biggest Ace in-the-hole
Democrats have the educational institutions from kindergarten to graduate school, which is why they control the other things mentioned.

If Only the GOP Would Listen
The path back to power is as clear as Dr. Sowell has stated. It is not to run from Reagan conservatisim but to return to Reagan conservatism. Where are the GOP leaders? No where to be seen from my view

Sowell Excels
Great column from Dr. Sowell. Marries up well with Ken Blackwell's column on Town Hall concerning Michael Steele's selection as GOP Chairman. Getting back to conservatism and shedding our Democrat Light policies will work.

Just finished reading...
Planned Chaos by Ludwig Von Mises

for the umpteenth time.

Sounds as if history does indeed repeat itself.

I highly recommend this little book to anyone with a brain which functions.

Remind me again: Why did we fight WWII ?

I don't know why
I don't know why I keep seeing this complaint,
"Lincoln suspended habeaus corpus."

It is a power specifically listed in the Constitution, Article 1 Section 9, "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it."

The Civil War certainly qualified.

Right as rain, Dr. Sowell
Unfortunately, far too many Republicans in Washington listen to liberal Democrats and the media (or do I repeat myself?) rather than their own constituents. They seem to have bought into the notion that the Washington insiders (re: Democrats and the media) understand what the average voter believes better than the average voter. So they follow the lie. Which is why I refuse to donate any more money to Republicans.

PS: Hey, all you Republican fund raisers...quit calling my home. You're not getting anymore of my money. Understand that!!! (How many times do I need to hand-up on them before they get the message?)

Excellent as always
The first thing we must do is get elected officials minds off of the next election. It certainly seems that congress is interested in only one thing reelection on both sides of the isle. Is there any way to do this except term limits?
Do we have a single Repulican that is not already considering how their vote will appeal to the voters next time around and how can they raise money.
I am stunned that any Republican would have voted to put a tax dodger in charge of the money.

Conspiracy Theories
Oh, trust me, it doesn't matter WHICH group is named, be it the CFR, the Illuminati, the Bilderbergers, the Rothschilds... because it's ALWAYS the JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!!

Resentment
Nothing's too good for our seniors! Medicare - (which actually may be needed by some) - is too frequently used as entertainment: go to the eye doc (even when the eyes can't get worse and won't get better) or the Nurse Practitioner (for every imagined illness) or whatever. Nowhere else to go, but you get personal attention, and a feeling that the world is swell. And I've seen an orthopod charge an uninterested Medicare $900 for reviewing x-rays that his office didn't even take. Medicare paid $450, supplemental insurance paid $70. But then, AARP is more powerful than even the Republican Party, and who plans to run against Gramma? (after the U.S. has gone broke, a membership in the NRA may be more important.)

And who'll run against kiddies? The Dims and the GOPs will eventually force us to swallow socialized medicine, as the youngest get Medicare insurance, and the Medicare age creeps lower and lower, top-down. And with that, eventually, they'll force everything breathing air to take Gardasil and statins.

Socialism is the evil comingling of government and business: between pharmaceuticals trolling for dollars and seniors desperate for entertainment and politicians eager for AARP votes, and pharmaceuticals' "gimme" money, we are sincerely f'ed - (no other word for it, sorry.)

The Daschle vote
The GOP is getting ready to roll over and piddle on itself and let another tax cheat into a cabinet post that will work feverishly to limit our choices in medical care.

A man so vile that he blocked highly qualified men for appointments using merely political reasons. We will get what is coming to us as the commies take over.

Anyone that trusts ANY politician right now is an utter fool in the IQ29, Mario, Hal, Chloe mode.

Thanks GW. Thanks Juan McStain.

AMEN!
Once again, Dr. Sowell shines his light of clarity and dispels the darkness of thought creeping in all around us. Let's focus on being true to our conservative principles and STAND FOR SOMETHING again...only then will electoral success follow.

Term limits
In order to avoid the kinds of things we see today, EVERY government position should have a term limit. Politicians should be worried thye wont get re-elected but many are not. Ted Kennedy has been a senator for more then 30 yrs. That is absurd!!! People say well it takes too long to learn how government works. All that means is we know too little about how government should work or government is too complicated. Lets limit the amount of power any one person or group can accumulate.

Socialist
With the nation becoming so liberal, we will soon be a socialist nation like the UK has become. Wake up America before it is too late. With total government control, we might as well move to Russia or China.

To Answer That Last Question
Republicans will throw away their advantage because THEY WANT THE BIG GOV'T SIDE TO WIN.

It's that simple. Disagree? Explain why Republicans aren't pounding home the pork in this bill - payouts to the Unions, to ACORN, etc.

Explain why Republicans aren't pounding home the "ethics" in the Messiah's cabinet appointees. Our Secretary of State has been paid off by the Arabs for God's sake! Not to mention all the tax cheats. And we can't find an issue?

Speaking of the tax cheats, why don't the Republicans point out the Dem's classism? From Palin to Kennedy to "only the little people pay taxes" it's obvious the left believes not in America but in a class system where what you can do legally depends on who you are. But we can't use that as an issue?

The Republicans want to lose. Think that one over.

"Retired Geek" is right on about Dr. Sowell

None
Dont you know the government has ONLY your best interest in mind? Dont you know the government can take care of everything? All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. Maybe we will need to be "reassigned" to a "training" center if we dont "appreciate" what our big brother is trying to do for us. With the right "education" you too will be a "useful" citizen.

Right on, as usual!
Thanks, Dr. Sowell

as I prepare to write a check to...
dear ol' Uncle Sam the resentment I feel is overwhelming. I would rather just flush it down the toilet than to send it to that "Black Hole" we call Washington DC. It would do the same amount of good either way.

But....as usual I will send it anyway, along with hope and a prayer that it will be used wisely because that is what I am supposed to do. Might as well wish in one hand and s_ _ _t in the other and see which one gets full first.

Solving America's Problems

How can a problem solver, solve a problem, without focusing on 'Who' or 'What' caused the problem?

That sounds like pure 'Nonsense', to all humans who do NOT know how to solve problems.

I owned and operated a software development company, which was profitable, until I found the real money was in 'Fixing' failed software, instead of developing software.

Anecdotal example, one of the largest companies in the world, in their field, brought me in to analyze their customer service software, which had the company paralyzed and on the road to bakruptcy.

The room was full of executives, board members and managers. They began attacking each other in an attempt to determine 'Who' was at fault. After about 30 minutes of this, I picked up my briefcase and started to leave the boardroom. The President of the company who had hired me asked "Where are you going", I responded "You don't need me to referree this childish 'Food Fight' do you?"

The room grew silent, I said "Obviously there are many here who need to vent their frustrations at one another, when you are ready to solve your problem, give me a call and if I am available, I will return and help you".

One executive blurted out, "How could we possibly solve our problem without knowing who caused it and how?"

I said, "Tell me what you want to accomplish with the software and what information is needed to whom, when and where".

Problem solving depends on, what do you want to accomplish - not who or what caused the problem.

What do us Americans want to accomplish with our government?

Note the number of RINOs -
especially on the silly UE website - who want to sell out social conservatives and be "more inclusive". They are not "inclusive" - they are sellouts who will jettison core values.

Retired Geek
"Obama wants America to fall..."

Well, because of certain emergency plans, first devised by the Nixon Administration and furthered by Ford and Carter - and almost utilized by Ollie North - all Obamessiah has to do is to create the conditions for a declared state of emergency. General Tommy Franks warned us about this, a real possibility if we're attacked by terrorists (again, and on a large scale.)

It won't take a determined effort for the POS/POTUS to accomplish this: Ollie North almost did it with the aid of WH insiders. And
all President Obamessiah has to do is to is:
1) bankrupt us and declare an emergency
2) deliberately allow terrorists to get through 3) manufacture an emergency.

Then martial law will be put in place. Only this time, someone with the politics of Hugo Chavez will be in the WH. See Executive Order 11490.

The key lies . . .
in the consciousness of us run-of-the-mill social and economic conservatives. If we keep their phones ringing off the hook and their email "in" boxes full, the Republican leadership won't dare kow-tow to Barackatopia. It's that simple in my view, so keep griping all!!!

Get. Rid. Of. McConnell.
Now.

Retired Geek
Its not what we WANT, its what the Constitution tells us the government should accomplish.

It is amazing, isn't it.
Let's see...what is the game plan:

1) Abandon Reagan principles
2) Become the party of "inclusiveness"
3) Nominate John McCain (jeezz)
4) De-energize the base
5) Introduce Sarah Palin (who has principles)
6) Polls blow past O'bama
7) Marginalize Palin
8) Sign TARP - pure stupidity at work here.
9) Watch as the polls move back to O'bama
10) Lose huge in November
11) Blame everyone but yourself for the loss

Sounds like they took a play right out of the Democrat playbook from 2000.

Let's hope Micheal Steele can get us back on track.

Senator John Cornyn is Ready
Let Senator Cornyn take the lead in the Senate. He is taking the fight to the Dems.

Republicans as Democrats
Why do the democrats want support from republicans? As long as we do not filibuster this it will pass without even a single republican vote.

Republicans should NOT go along with any plan where the government is handing out our tax money as a "stimulus plan".

Thomas Sowell is correct when he states that the democrats will claim victory if it works and will pass it off as bipartanship if it fails. Of course, all of history tells us that this will fail.

I sincerely hope that our republican senators and congressmen will not agree with the government hand-out planned by democrats. They need to distance themselves from democrats.

Obama Wants America to Fail 2

The 'Mantra' of ideologues, is based on the words 'Who' or 'How', and concentrate on the past, instead of the present.

Their survival technique is based on, 'Determine 'WHO' or 'How' and then flail away at those who caused the need to survive, instead of 'What' can one do to survive, in the present.

"There will be time enough for counting, when the dealing is done".

The primary 'Goal' of Barack Obama is the failure of America.

Barack Obama's core belief, is that investing in failure and nurturing failure, will produce 'Failure' in America, which is his goal.

Barack Obama believes that 'Failure will be the Success' of his administration.

Why does Barack Obama want America to fail?

Barack Obama (and any thinking person), knows that his 'Stimulus package' will cause more Business's to fail and more jobs to be lost, creating more panic and economic destruction.

Capitalism must fail, so that Obamunism (Socialism), can take over America, at every level.

Barack Obama's goal is Socialism, Socialism's goal is Communism.

Barack Obama has a chance to do what he has trained for, worked towards and dreamed about his entire life - destroy the American way of life and install Socialism in America.

Meanwhile, ideologues across the spectrum of politics, focus on the past and the 'Who' and 'How' America was placed in 'Survival Mode' instead of focusing on Surviving the present.

What A Crock
I have come to the conlcusion that party matters squat. Right, left, etc means squat.

What matters is how the United States Citizen in viewed by those in D.C.

Here is a quote from Lamar Alexander this morning:

"...let people keep more of their own money."

EXCUSE ME -- "let" "keep" "more" -- What a crock. The citizenry are treated at best as kids on an allowance, at worst as SUBJECTS.

Republicans have proven time and again during this supposed crisis that they do NOT stand on principle. Individual Republicans have held on, but they are neither sought for interviews nor focused on by the media.

Suggest reading Edna Eagle, Retired Geek thread comments, for example, if you have not done so thus far.

Dr. Soweell, great column as always.

RetGeek
Re: ;7:15 post..You know it worked for the TAX
Cheats.

I am with you Farmers Wife, when my husband was working out of state I had to write similar checks because due to a series of job losses
we had to use some of our retirement to survive
and you know the rest of the story. I've always said 1776 was my year!

I just read Kesselers report on NewsMax and
he said that W called the shot with the RNC and
that they heard and they heard and obeyed and LOST. That's why there wasn't any response to the base, they were obeying the boss in the W.H.. The election strategery came right from the W.H. so Martinez and Duncan were seat warmers, the real chairman was in the Oval Office and now the GOP and the country is paying heavily for it. Seems Micheal Steele
has a better plan.

As always, TS is right on
He echos my own views on my blog, check it out.

I have been hearing more and more Republicans talk like conservatives not like liberals. The HR-1 vote was so encouraging and even 11 Democrats had the good sense to vote no, will put them in good position to get reelected.

Senator McCain is saying there should be nothing in the so called stimulus package unless it creates jobs, amen. The country made a big mistake electing Obama, it will be evident to all in due time.

Now, we need to get those Rino Senators out of Maine, where I live.

As always, contact me directly if you like barrym@tds.net

For the Gipper
What is wrong with Senate Republicans??? They have the perfect example, a blueprint, of what works, thanks to RONALD REAGAN.

Are they weak, cowardly, liberal, or just not that bright? At this point, they have to hear from each of us.

http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/we-demand-true-conserva tive-leadership.html

I don't understand it
It is sad that Republicans seem to remember conservative principles only when they are OUT of power.

It is
a Heads I Win, Tails You Lose plan that O the Democrats wanted set up.

If the "stimulus" and all other government intervention works (it won't), they will claim a win. And if it fails with Republicans on board, they will blame the GOP and free markets.

Will we win this battle against "government to the rescue"?

Kaymad
It just shows you the allure of power. Once you have it you think you can do whatever you want, thats why term limits is necessary for ALL government jobs

Yin-Yang Government
The universe is supposed to be filled with balance: yin/yang, good/evil, spending/saving, etc.... Republicans are failing to fulfill their role to check Democrats when they appear to agree that what is needed is more spending, just on different matters. What the American people want is fiscal conservatism. If we're not getting it from the party that traditionally represented it, why would we support it?

I called my two tweedledees: Webb & Warner and I suggest you all do the same with your tweedledees and tweedledums. These folks are so addicted to spending money I don't think rehab could help. They just need to be put out of their misery. I'm sorry we'll have to wait until 2010 to change anything.

Recent pundits have spoken to the fact that the GOP must return to its roots to reinvigorate the conservative message. A bigger problem is the failure of the party to appeal to the masses who until now have only found one party they perceive as ready to address their needs. The sad thing is most of these democrat voters are not liberal in their everyday lives and are far more conservative in their thoughts than they realize!!! It is critical that the GOP speak to these people and give them a better choice.

Writing a Congressman
Instead of just complaining about the stimulus package on blog sites exclusively, I decided to write to my senators directly. I began to realize that my congressmen are probably not viewing townhall or other blog comments. My senators are Grassley (R) and Harkin (D) of Iowa.

I have yet to hear a response. In fact, a few years ago I wrote Senator Grassley asking him to pass a bill that would allow borrowers of Federal Student loans to refinance those loans. Currently, these loans cannot be refinanced at the latest lower interest rates. In 2000, the year I graduated from college, the interest rates were at 8.5%. After discounts I pay 7% interest. Today, I know of graduates that are only paying 1% in interest after discounts. You would think that lowering the interest for hundreds of thousands of people would stimulate this economy. I did not hear back from Senator Grassley even then.

Yet, the main issue and question here is that what or who do these congress people listen to? I would have at least expected a simple acknowledgment: "Thank you for your letter, I'll look into it!". But no.

So why would the republicans deject this stimulus bill when they don't even listen to their constituents? It's more likely that lobbyists and Gallop polls receive an ear.

Has anyone else here received similar responses from their senators?

Help me if you can I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round Dr. Sowell and the rest of my fellow conservatives. Libs can go to hell.

Brian in Iowa, yes
I do write to my Senators (Cornyn and Hutchison) and my Congressman (Thornberry) frequently and I do always get an email response and usually get a letter in the mail too.

I don't know how much good it does but it is better than doing nothing and I don't know what else I can do.

Republicans are not good politicians
Republicans just don't know how to play the game that the Democrats are very good at.

Republicans always allow the Democrats to set the rules. Once the rules are set, Republicans never get the ball...they are always on defense.

Democrats have the Media on their side. Republicans can never learn that they will never have their Media on their side. Instead of learning that and shunning the Media and taking their message straight to the people...they continue to try and appease and accomodate them. Getting nowhere of course.

Speaking of appeasement, a Republican will tell you in a minute that we can't appease our enemies, that it doesn't work - ever. But yet that's exactly what they try and do with their political enemies - appease them. They continue to try and "reach across the aisle" and "work with Democrats" and the like and it never works. Just like they say it won't with our nation's enemies (other than the Democrats).

And there's approximately 100 million eligible voters out there who don't vote. And most of these folks are conservative-minded folks who don't vote because they don't see a nickel's difference in either of the parties. So instead of Republicans realizing this, taking solid conservative positions, taking a stand and showing some backbone and winning these people over...they buy-in to the notion that it is the "Moderates" that they have to go after. That supposed 20% who are Moderates, but for all intents and purposes are...Democrats. And of course it is the Democrats and the Media that create the notion that the Moderates are so important in elections. And Republicans believe it. At the expense of their base and millions of potential voters who are not "Moderates".

The Democrats would be easy as pie to defeat. But it would require the Republicans learning how to go on offense and quit taking their game plans from the opposition.

Our government at work.
Nancy Pelosi wants a Windfall Tax on Retirement Income. In other words tax what you have made by investing toward your retirement.
Madam speaker wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement fund, 401K and Mutual Funds! Alas it is true - all to help the 12 Million Illegal Immigrants and other unemployed Minorities!
She quotes...' We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income, (didn't Marx say something like this), in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest.'
'We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans'..' (Read that quote again and again and let it sink in. 'Lower your retirement, give it to others who have not worked as you have for it'.

Media Strategy
One way that the GOP can get the media on their side is to focus on the proper media outlets.

Local news (excluding newspapers) tends to be less biased than national news. Local stations have reporters that do research because they are trying to make a name for themselves - they're hungry.

What a way to make a name for themself than to investigate corrupt politicians.

Turn the local press against the Liberal Dems. You may have to conceed the WH for a while, but you will gain in the House and Senate and put the necessary check on the President's power.

Conservative dolts.

Dr. Sowell... I salute you, again.

In fact, I stand up and salute you.

To ANY present or future wannabe GOP mover-and-shaker or differnce-maker...

Please pay attention.

Thomas Sowell writes, "Too many Republicans seem to think that being "inclusive" means selling out your principles to try to attract votes. It never seems to occur to them that you can attract a WIDER range of voters by explaining your principles IN A WAY THAT MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND." (Caps mine.)

It doesn't get any more BASIC than that.

And it works... every time it's tried.

So if enough of our elected GOP geniuses would finally LEARN this and actually DO this... they would stop calling us the Stupid Party.

And in the process, we might even save a nation.

Duh...

Forward this column to Rep. Senators!
I forwarded a link to this column to Sen. McConnell, not that I think he will actually read it, but if enough people send the same, perhaps he will.

I added the comment, "With all due respect, are you crazy?", along with a few other choice words. Please no cursing as it will not help the cause. I told him to fire all current economic advisors and hire Dr. Sowell and Dr. Walter Williams and take their advise.

Example of Republicans using the Media
Republicans can use the Media to their advantage.

Take McCain and Palin for example. Did John McCain not know that the Media would question Palin in such a manner as to make her stumble-up and look bad? What did McCain have to gain by having Sarah Palin do the interviews that she did? There was nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

So why did McCain agree to those interviews? He did it because he thought he had to and that the Media would claim that if he didn't have her interview...the Media would write stories about how he is trying to hide her.

But there was another option that he had. He could have denied those interviews and then waited for the Media to question him about it in a press conference. Where he could have then given his reasoning:

"We have nothing to gain by having Governor Palin doing interviews with you folks. You all have chosen your candidate...Barrack Obama. We are not whining or complaining about it, but it is blatantly obvious that the mainstream Media has chosen to fully support Senator Obama in this election. So, we have to do what is best for our campaign and take our message directly to the people...the folks who really matter. You all have made your choice and now we're making ours."

What would have been wrong with doing something like that? McCain would have put the Media on the defensive, they would have had no choice but to air his remarks and his sentiments would have resonated with a great many of the American people. It could have turned the Media's support for Obama into a positive thing AND Sarah Palin would never have been put in the position that she was in.

We can use the Media to our advantage. But we have to take them on and stop trying to get them to like us by agreeing to whatever they want.

Republicans are as stupid as
Democrats are CORRUPT.

The two-party system is an elitist system designed to take POWER FROM THE PEOPLE and centralize it in government ...

That is how we got a usurper in the White House ...

Terry: You are naieve ...
John McCain threw Sarah palin to the media wolves because John McCain was a WILLING political fall guy ... he was a stooge ...

Nobody that actually wanted to win could have run such a lousy campaign ...

John McCain is JOE PALOOKA ...

He lost on purpose ... and in the end he didn't even defend Sarah ...

John McCain was THE WORST candidate in modern history ...

The only reason he got as many votes as he did is because Americans were smart enough to see right through this fraudulent, usurper in the White House ...

McCain is a TOTAL LOSER ....

Republican principles are the problem
The only economic principles of the Republican Party are:

1) Lower taxes
2) Keep government off my back

And these are the polar opposite of what is needed right now.

We are currently somewhere near the top of the Laffer curve. Lowering taxes at this point will reduce revenues to the government. Which would be fine if we didn't have deficits. Woops.

Also, lowering capital gains taxes will do NOTHING to stimulate the economy.

Corporations don't need investment capital. They need customers with money. When they have customers with money, there will be plenty of willing investors.

Businesses are failing because there is a lack of demand. There is a lack of demand because the working class is tapped out and losing jobs like crazy. The only way we are going to turn this economy around is by strengthening the working class. If Republicans can figure out how to do that better than Democrats, they will win votes. But capital gains tax cuts will not accomplish that.

And what we need is stricter regulation of the financial sector, not less. Any moron knows that. They got over-leveraged. That's a problem that can be easily solved by tighter regulations.

And how can anyone look at the Bernie Madoff situation and say that the financial industry is over-regulated.

Phylo out.

Lee: We will produce Michael Steele's
REAL birth certificate ...

Where is Obama's?

AND ... Michael Steele in NOT a Muslim ...

but he IS a REAL BLACK-AMERICAN ...

unlike the thug you elected with dual-citizenship issues ...

BTW, wasn't that your feckless leader on ARABIAN TV bragging about his MUSLIM ROOTS?

To compare Liddy to that SPOILED RICH KID AYERS is your MOST idiotic comparison ...

But thank you for keeping everybody up to date on the Obama birth certificate issue ...

you forgot to mention Obama's name though ... when did he legally change it to Barack Obama ... ?

There is NO DOUBT about where Michael Steele was born ... or what his real name is ...

So let's get it on ... get your leader to produce HIS birth certificate ... and we'll get Michael Steele to produce his ...

LEE IN CAL:
Isn't there a church to go spray paint and vandalize?

Why waste your time on Town Hall?

Someday you'll get a job and grow up, there's always "hope" that you'll "change".

Lee
You are kooky

The MSM would have had a field day anyway. The problem is McCain didnt let Palin off the reigns because she is the kind of conservative we need. he picked her because she wasa woman, lets face it. It was a PERFECT answer to the 1st African American candidate. BUT she is EXACTLY what we needed and the type of candidate that would have won that election.

Party Politics
Dr. Sowell is right on as usual. The only thing, it seems to me, that will bring sanity back to the congress is to put term limits on them. I have seen people go to Washington to do good things, only to become like those there. Suddenly what the person has accumulated by hard work, bringing them some satisfaction and power, becomes the most important thing in America and must be protected at all costs. That takes time, so we need to get them out of there before they lose perspective and become one of "them".

Sound reasoning as usual, Dr. Sowell
Reagan spoke to the conservative attitudes inherent in all those who love freedom and do not seek to dominate their fellow citizens. He believed in every word and it was evident to all who heard his message of freedom and American patriotism.

Those beliefs, when fitted to the issues, speak to the soul of America which is to be found in our founding documents and our unique experiment in self government.

Our recent candidate did not share those principles and it was evident as he struggled to find a message.

This bill is already filibuster proof. With McCain and his fellow RINO's still in the senate, there is no way to stop it in my opinion.

I will be very happy to be proved wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

Phylo
Did you just escape from a hospital? You need to go back, you're not well. I am amazed that people like you actually exist who honestly believe we dont pay ENOUGH taxes!!! You have been brainwashed to actually believe you should pay MORE. As I have said before I wish I owned the grocery store in your town so I could charge you more then the labeled price for everything in your shopping cart. I'd be rich! And btw its not "Keep government off my back" that republicans believe in its SMALLER government. Smaller government would make whatever we pay in taxes now MORE then enough, but you prefer to pay $4 for a $2 gallon of gas. Now thats a stimulus package.

Brian in IA
A few years ago I called and emailed one of my Senators, Voinovich (R), and just as you said, not so much as an acknowledgement. I wasn't the only one, either. A good many family members and friends also emailed, with the similar non-response.

Unfortunately, I feel that just as African-Americans are taken for granted in the Democrat Party, so are conservatives in the Republican Party.

Phylo
You said "Corporations don't need investment capital. They need customers with money. When they have customers with money, there will be plenty of willing investors" How would customers have money if you expect them to pay more taxes to the government??????

I cant wait for this answer!

Phylo and barack-1 trick ponies
The economy CANNOT rebound while your hero beats it up every day as he has been for over 2 years.

Confidence in the market will only happen when the markets have something to celebrate. Like when your hero is successfully marginalized as nothing more than the same old, same old, big spending Washington insider. Your economic intelligence is wrapped in government.

Phylo
It keeps getting better. Again you said "Businesses are failing because there is a lack of demand. There is a lack of demand because the working class is tapped out and losing jobs like crazy."

Lack of demand means people arent spending because they wont or dont have the money. People are lsoing jobs like crazy you say but you expect them to pay more taxes? Where do they get the $ for this? Oh wait I get it part 2 of your stimulus plan AFTER paying more money for stuff is pay for your taxes with your credit card! EXCELLENT plan! Where do I sign?

Conservative GOP Members
Obama voters have reduced your numbers to the point that the liberals don’t even need RINO votes to pass everything they want, and that’s bad. It’s at the point where Nancy Ex-pelosi-ve is eliminating rules that allow you to have any effect. We need to get Conservatives back in the majority in Congress

WHAT ALL OF YOU MUST DO FROM NOW ON IS VOTE UNANIMOUSLY AGAINST EVERY BILL AND TAX THAT LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT VOTE FOR ANYTHING LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT GO ALONG TO GET ALONG WITH THE LIBERALS!!! DO NOT GO TO THEIR PARTIES!!! TOTALLY VOCALLY OPPOSE THE LIBERALS IN EVERY WAY, ESPECIALLY ILLEGAL ALIEN AMNESTY!!! THE LIBERALS ARE TRYING TO STICK YOU WITH PART OF THE BLAME FOR ALL THEIR FUTURE FAILURES; DON’T LET THEM DO IT!!! DO NOT CLAP WHEN OBAMA SAYS ANYTHING!!! JOINING LIBERALS IN ANYTHING IS SELLING OUT AMERICA!!! THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!!! THEY ARE YOUR AND AMERICA’S WORST ENEMIES, AND WILL DO ANYTHING THEY CAN TO DESTROY BOTH!!! GET THE BLUEBLOOD COUNTRYCLUB ELITES OUT OF THE PARTY!!!

You cannot stop their bills or even slow them down beyond calling for roll call votes for them. Make everything they pass totally theirs. What you will be doing is getting on record as opposing all the destructive liberal bills. They are trying to get you on the hook with them, so you can’t blame them fully.

When all these liberal actions make things much worse, as they will, you can point at the record and show the people that none of you had anything to do with them, and that you had no control over their passage, that all this destruction was caused by liberals.

Then you can tell the people about the tax elimination plan that you proposed that was kept from a vote by the liberals, and other bills that you proposed. You did not vote for the Algore hoax which multiplied the cost of everything many times, and made energy and home heating inaccessible.

No bailout
The local bank hereabouts, El Dorado Savings, did not "abandon traditional standards for making loans;" ergo, they are doing fine and don't need a bailout. Their clients actually had the income and credit history to qualify for loans.

Greedy lenders who knew the risks, but presumed the government would bail them out if everything went south, should be made to face the music.

No bailout of banksters; no bailout of foolish borrowers.

What democrats ? those are
ambulance chasing weasels posing as democrat "public servants"

It would be nice to see the Republican senate hold ground like the House Reps and those 11 Dems, (who might have wanted more $$ in the plan but, I hope they did it for the right reasons) I don't know if they are strong enough to hold up, is too much BS going against them, though they still should hold up.

Though we insist on the Republican senators holding to traditional (once) conservative values, let's not confuse the easily confused, as it has been happening, EVEN THESE REPUBLICANS ARE BETTER THAN THE FAKE DEMS ! THEIR INTEREST RATE WOULD OF BEEN 2% and they would have started from the trickle up, loans to all the non working (by choice) and increased the amount by 100%. Keep that in mind the next time you go on trashing the imperfect and FORCE US ALL TO PUT UP WITH THE WORSE, the fake Dems.

The congress with the lowest approval rating in the history of our country and that has their finger prints all over the housing corruptions and many others, is running our country ! hope and change. While the genius, no lobbyists in my administration, tax cheaters welcomed, the great hyped one, gives US this welfare bill. Hype and Propaganda without change and with no Hope ! What a trill !

If Republicans are for LOWER taxes but thats NOT whats needed now that MUST mean HIGHER taxes are needed right now. Who pays taxes Phylo? NOT corporations! They pass the cost of taxation onto whom? See the problem with liberal Democrats is they want to PUNISH businesses with taxes not raise revenue. They believe they can legislate busineeses to pay more taxes but all that will do is raise the price of EVERYTHING but as we already know you WANT to pay more for stuff so I see where this plan makes sense to you.

Republicans as Democrats
Regan made it clear on what he stood for and did not back down to the liberals and try to act like them to "get" votes. The Democrats are good fighters; the Republicans are compromisers and seem to be afraid of a good fight, except maybe on the golf courses. As Dr. Sowell said, Democrates own the media, unions, trial lawyers, and many of the judges. Republicans will never win over the Democrat voters in an election. Until conservatives go back to their basics and support their base, they will continue to lose. I am fed up with the present oligarchy system of government that both parties practice.

Tweedledum & tweedledee,
and yes, it is all about personality and rhetoric. The two corrupt major parties have only one goal, more power to themselves. It is the driving force behind the partisanship that is destroying this great nation.

The elites have perfected the old technique of telling a lie until it becomes accepted as true. The lie is that only they have the necessary wisdom, knowledge, and experience to govern, and we have no other choice, nowhere else to go. The end result is the lesser of two evils mentality that only gives us more evil. Doing the same thing will not give us a different result.

Neither party is going to stand for Constitutional self government, rule of law, or will of the people. They love big government and buy off the people with pork barrel spending and entitlements. In the end, our inheritance has been stolen from us.

If we continue to vote for the same people we become complicit in this destruction of our nation! If you want to understand HOW this scam has been perpetrated by the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines, you need to visit my website. Go to JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. The site will be available for a few more weeks. We simply cannot afford any more power going to the elites, and that includes the GOP! Thanks, Joe

Of Bailouts & Boondoggles
BAILED OUT BANK GIVES $2M TO ACORN Bank of America, one of the many banks to benefiting from a government bailout, is giving more than $2.1 million directly to the controversial interest group ACORN that engaged in fraudulent voter registration activities in the 2008 election. The January 29 Chronicle of Philanthropy [subscription only] reported Bank of America's Charitable Foundation is giving the interest group $2,155,000 "for efforts to prevent foreclosures and educate people about finances and purchasing homes." The gift is being made in four separate allocations, most of them going to Chicago--the city President Obama hails from. ACORN endorsed Obama in the 2008 presidential election and actively worked to elect him by conducting various get-out-the-vote activities. In the process of those activities ACORN submitted hundreds of fraudulent voter registration forms to local election offices. Two of the grants, one for $2 million and another for $85,000 are being made to a Chicago ACORN corporation. Another, for $20,000, is being given to a Las Vegas chapter. And, $50,000 is being gifted to ACORN in Miami.

So the idea is ONLY raise capitol gains taxes, is that it? Do you think you could raise enough revenue that way? I bet you suspect businesses should just take it right? You believe its immoral for a business to make money or at least to make "too much" money right? So when businesses go to foreign countries with more favorable business climates you will cometo TH and complain how they took jobs overseas.

The curious outbreak of "honest mistake"
Liberals, for whatever reason, thought public servants spent taxes not pay taxes. It seems the current "honest mistake" outbreak first surfaced with Charlie Rangel:

Charlie Rangel speaks about the value of paying taxes and the curious liberal pattern of making honest mistakes:

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/20080915_Editorial__ Rangel_s_Tax_Problems.html

Limousine liberal, Tom Daschle, seems to have caught the "honest mistake" virus.

The Obama appointed head of the IRS caught the "Honest Mistake, no taxes for rich liberals" virus in Europe.

White House Performance Czar nominee, Nancy Killefer, had to withdraw her name due to a bad case of the "Honest Mistake no taxes for rich liberals" virus.

How does a corporation get out of paying the 35% corporate tax rate levied by the Federal Government?

Add in what your state imposes after that. How does a corporation get out of doing that, too?

What do you not understand about the effects of taxing capital and its relationship to demand for labor?

Did you attend "any" economics courses, or do you rattle the latest lefty fashion?

You say that deficits are the reason why we cannot lower marginal tax rates for corporations and small business owners (whose taxes are entwined with their personal income), but yet, you say that deficit spending is the answer.

Do you not see the silliness in your position?

What is the average rate of corporate tax in Europe currently?

When you find out, ask yourself why corporations outsource and import labor.

Socialism vs capitalism
"People do not ask for socialism because they know that socialism will improve their conditions, and they do not reject capitalism because they know that it is a system prejudicial to their interests. They are socialists because they believe that socialism will improve their conditions, and they hate capitalism because they believe that it harms them. They are socialists because they are blinded by envy and ignorance." --economist Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973)
Thank you again, Dr Sowell!!!!! Clear and hardhitting again.

What is Most Irksome!
How is it that banks receiving bailout money can then raise credit card interest rates on the tax payors that are funding their bailout?

How come Detroit Automakers are raising the cost of their products now that they've been bailed out with tax revenues?

Sounds like a good class-action lawsuit to me.

How about deploying our best resources

While Rush is away this week, would it, or would it not be SEISMIC if he were to appoint an "Economic Restoration Collaborative", comprised of himself, principal advisers Dr. Tom Sowell, Dr. Walter Williams, with Michael Steele as manager.. Talk about the Real People Power of America.

explaining
Your exactly right we don't explain the position. We say we are against SCHIP but stop there and people are left believing we don't want to take care of kids with no health care. Same goes for we are against regulation but it makes it look like we are for golden parachutes. the list is endless we don't show how being against something is compassionate or better for everyone and what are solution would do to make it better. Until we can explain ourselves better the media and the democrats will define us.

One party is still better than the other
Yes there are two parties and yes we wish the Republicans were more like the Republicans we expect and that they combat the propaganda and manipulative lies of the fake dems, BUT STOP FALLING FOR THE LEFTIST MANIPULATION ! the fake leftist dems still have a monopoly on the worst of two evils. I rather be shot on the arm, then so close to the heart (as per the fake dems), the fake dems dems and their propaganda outlets did a great job of selling that lie and are still doing it, to the sheep and the willing fools.
the crooked fake dems love to split the blame when is all on them, they love to say "the Republicans are the same," they call out their whores in the corrupted media to jump all over the Republicans when one messes up and they call them when their weasels are caught, to cover up...Learn the game !
I want to thank Tom Daschle for another lesson on how it all works, the people fire you, you leave with a golden government parachute, you get a limo and a driver, a pay rise to go with the government pension, you get a call from the hyped one to come on and rip the government off more, you say sorry about not paying taxes, "didn't know," and you do it all again, and the taxpayers get screwed all over again and even more...that is why I know, there has to ba a hell !

Big change?
We have watch how the elected leaders for the Obama's administration had forgotten to pay their own taxes with no penalties when paying it late! For us the taxpayers is a different song and dance. We all are obligated to pay late interest charges, at least 20% in the ammount owed or will be jailed for quite a long time, too, if we don't pay as we are told. Meantime, these candidates who did not do their Biden's "patriot duty", and made the "mistake on their taxes" to be paid, "supposedly" they didn't know and were found out only when nominated for a position in the administration, got a sweet deal in order to get their nomination.
It's outrageous, lawyers and higher educated people don't know which taxes had to be paid. It's completely ridiculous and a make believe scheme of their "patriotic duty", make us abiding citizens believe their story, which will had gone ignore if it was not for their nomination to the new administration. Do they think We the People are so stupid? My honest opinion is most of us "little people". will do a more efficient management of our taxpayers dollars than they are doing at this time of Horrible Economic Crisis. We must keep and eye on all these supposed to be experts, who want to help themselves and their political campaign bureaucrats in order to get re-elected to do more of the same. I think enough is enough. Our voices must be known to all these "smart leaders", before our country join the 3rd. world group. We are already bankrupt! Where is all this money coming from to take care of our citizens? Is time to STOP the illegal aliens invasion and ALL benefits given to these law breakers, too, who are being used by political groups advantaged by paying huge fees in order to make believe it's OK to break our laws. No one is above the law! WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE WE GET INTO A DEEPER CRISIS!

Why does anyone
ever listen to a leftist, when the discussion is the free market. Would one seek out Christian Bale for a discussion on civility? Or how about Charles Barkley on the golf swing! Leftist hate, they loathe, the notion of the free market. It's unfair, some people have more talent, more initiative, more get up and go, and it hurts the "feelings" of those who don't. As we know, the female of the species has more "feelings" than does the male. And, further we know that the "feelings" party, is the democrat party, and they are the home of this notion that everything must be "fair", everything must be "equal". The democrat party is a party governed by the female point of view, and the Republican party is governed by the male point of view. The free market has been, is, and always will be appealing to males, and is why leftists so detest it. Our free market system is Tiger Woods, but leftists believe that Lorena Ochoa offers a better way!! Change yes, better no!!

American

http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/13/study-tallies- corporations-not-paying-income-tax/

Here's the first paragraph of the article:

"Two out of every three United States corporations paid no federal income taxes from 1998 through 2005, according to a report released Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress."

If you look at the amount of taxes collected from corporations as a percentage of GDP, the Unites States ranks second from the bottom.

Know who collects less corporate taxes as a percentage of GDP?

ICELAND!

Look it up.

So, American, how are we going to lower taxes on corporations that don't pay any taxes?

Phylo out,.

Daschle Just Withdrew !

Another Obama Nominee Withdraws under a Scandel.

Obama is looking more and more like an incompetent ,who can't properly vet his own nominees.

Time for an Honest Change!
Joe Olivo, NY:
You are 100% right, people keep electing the same gang every election! How can we have and
"Honest Change"? It's more of the same year after year. Right now we have the "Clinton's administration" gang back, only Bill and Monica re missing! May be the president will be gracious enough to give his seat to them too? Well, no will not happened, since his ego is being the President and achieving his political goals.
In my opinion is limited time to serve in Congress, so we have fresh brains with excellence performance in government for the best of our sovereign country and its citizen.
Have a good day!

Spot on, Mr. Sowell
I agree with your entire post. However, instead of saying, "Most Americans' principles are closer to those of the Republicans than to those of the Democrats.", I would prefer, "Most Americans' principles are closer to those of a Conservative than to those of a Liberal."

My take from your article is that the Republican party needs to return to its conservative values, and that by demonstrating and communicating those values they can regain their majority status.

Phylo
Here is the next to last paragraph of Phylo's article which he forgot to mention.

"The vast majority of the large corporations that did not pay taxes had net losses, he said, and thus no income on which to pay taxes. “The notion that there is a large pool of untaxed corporate profits is incorrect.”

Its best for EVERYONE to pay less taxes.

Phylo Se Fiser
There are no such things as corporate taxes; what are called corporate taxes are really a type of political prestidigitation.

"I'm raising revenue" says the politican, "but not from you hardworking folks! No, no, no! I make the $$$ appear from the coffers of those greedy, wicked corporations!"

In fact, what the pol has done is enact a stealth sales tax. If they think we need a sales tax, submit a bill, pass it, & let us see how much they want to add to our cost of living with every purchase we make. Because, ultimately, only people pay taxes. Up taxes on a family by $200 & that means a little girl doesn't get a bicycle for her birthday. Make it $2000, & that family doesn't get a vacation. $20,000 & their dream of a small business evaporates. And for what? So some gov't bureaucrat can sit in a dreary little cubicle & shuffle papers that will be filed & forgotten.

What's more, the stealth sales tax is an especially stupid form of tax collection. The corporations with the best lobbyists are the ones that end up with the lightest burden of tax collection. It has little to do with fairness or even efficiency.

We can not make progress in politics until we stop accepting the politicians' lies.

Regards,

Real tax reform
We the people pay all taxes, and we are the only ultimate source of all tax revenue. Regardless where government initially collects the money, all tax money ultimately comes from us, the people.
Since we the people are the one and only source of all tax revenue:
There should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue.
It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, graduated, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons for each level of government: One Tax and Done.
You cannot convince a person or a corporation to start a new business or expand an existing business, increase jobs, and hire new employees, when you tax away the operating capitol he is using to operate his PRESENT business
The best thing that government can do to help the country, the people, and even government, is to repeal all of the many hundreds, or thousands of existing taxes, fees, and charges. These taxes are the federal deficit. These taxes are the high price of everything. These tax eliminations are spending cuts. Every tax that is eliminated is a tax that we the people no longer have to pay. These taxes are the difference between the price we pay for health care and everything else, and the price we would pay if these taxes were repealed. Eliminating these taxes will remove them from the price paid for everything by everyone.
One Tax and Done will provide many benefits to all, even government:
One Tax and Done will reduce the price paid for everything by one-third.

Phylo: Considering our debt load, how low should we go in tax rates?

What an Insult !!!!!!!
Rethuglicans as Democrats !!!!

What an insult - to Democrats.

We are the Party of FDR, JFK, Clinton, and Obama. Not Hoover, Ike, Tricky Dicky, and Bush.

Bipartisanship indeed an illusion
When the Socialists use the term "bipartisanship", or when they refer to "coming together", they don't mean compromise in the grand tradition of American politics. They mean that anyone who does not agree with them must surrender and submit, a sort of political Islam, if you will.

But it's effective propaganda-who isn't for everyone coming together? "Just like we did in World War II". The difference back then was that most Americans agreed on the same basic principles. But now, enough Americans have been educated by teachers trained by Marxists, Progressives and other Leftists; enough Americans believe in letting someone else do something for them; and enough Americans believe that the state is the answer to, rather than the cause of, their problems.

This is a cold civil war, folks.

---Obama-Jimmy Carter's second term---

Jefferey
I can't figure out what you're trying to say.

Exxon paid 30 billion in taxes in 2007. Try telling them that they don't pay any taxes.

By law, corporations are legally persons. As persons, their income should be taxed, just like everyone else's.

Some of you seem to live in a fantasy world of grand prosperity for everyone and no one pays any taxes.

Brian
I wrote Rep. Mitchell (AZ) urging him not to vote for expansion of SCHIP. I got a form letter email response giving me the history of the program (I could care less). He went on to say of the 4 million kids to be "aided" by this BS 99,000 of them would be AZ kids. (Don't care--they aren't "my" kids or the states.) He went out of his way to crow about the fact that it would not cover children of illegal immigrants. (Duh, are you for the "innocents" or not? What does the status matter when it comes to the warm fuzzies of compassion?) THEN the very prominent warning that "since 9/11, stronger security measures" would serve to delay U.S. Mail sent to him. This BOZO doesn't want to get letters---it's a lot easier to respond with a form letter email and hit the delete button! However, I do have an alternative---POSTCARDS! Drown the SOB's in them when you want the message to be loud and clear. Send a postcard to your senators TODAY. Just use their name and Washington, DC. Believe me, the post office won't let you down; they will get there!

As always Dr. Sowell's words echo my reasoning.

Phhylo
Considering our debt load wes hould only pay taxes sufficieint to allow the government to secure the common defense, deliver mail (which is slowly becoming obolete and should eventually be eliminated)and thats about it. We dont NEED a dept of education, agriculture, homeland security, transportation and there are tons more I forgot. The poiint is by cutting those depts we would have TONS of $ to get us out of debt. Once the debt is paid off reduce taxes even further. Read the constitution THATS ALL the government should be doing.

The tax laws
are so complicated that you could hire several CPA's and they would interpret the law "10 different ways from Sunday". As a small business, we were audited at the 5 year point, in our struggling business. For one week, the auditors went over all our books, returns etc. and could find nothing. However, several months later, we are notified that they have audited our personal tax returns for 5 years. We ended up owing $6,000 in back taxes. We had 30 days to make amends before penalty was attached. Perhaps it is time for a flat tax!
Can anyone tell the difference between a Democrat and a Republican? It may also be time for the emergence of a strong third party! Lastly, will anything ever be done to get "the bottom feeders" off of the welfare rolls. When so much of your income is going to taxes, of one kind or another, it is very discouraging to see those who live quite well off of the rest of us, go on their merry way.

Phylo
Exxon then must be on of the one in 3 companies that DID pay taxes. And once again I will ask you the question...If you say companies are considered indiviudals in the tax code dont you think $30 BILLION in one year is enough for ANY individual to pay? Once again thats not enough for you? Let me ask you...how HIGH do you think tax rates should go?

Phylo-WE pay corporate taxes
Corporations pass along the expense of corporate income taxes to consumers of their products and services, in the form of higher prices. Another cost that is passed along is the cost of jobs lost, if a corporation finds that it would be cheaper to relocate to another country, where corporate taxes are lower.

---Obama-Jimmy Carter's second term---

Liberal Propaganda Machine
The trolls here are not the important people who put out the propaganda, they are just underlings. They have their talking points given to them, though.

They have their job to do,even if it is insignificant compared to their puppet-master. Soros has trained them well. They are here every day, plying their trade. Lying for their master. Making money for townhall, too.

Principles and Politicians
I think the real problem is that very few if any politicians have any principles at all in the first place. What they do have are involved with acquiring as much money and power as possible, regardless of the methods. And if the method is illegal, well, they are a politician and shouldn't be charged.

What we need are politicians who do have principles. Unfortunately, neither party will nominate any since that is a conflict with those now in office.

Sue:
I think that the real differences between Republicans and Democrats are very slight and generally about things that really aren't that important in the long run. All are emotional issues, not societal or economic issues.

For instance, abortion. Personally I don't like it and am against it. But, really, in the long run what difference does it make to the country or world? Very, very little if any. There are always others willing to step in to take the place of those who didn't make it.

But on real issues that DO affect everyone, they seem to have the same plans, etc. In fact the reason we no longer have an American Communist Party is because BOTH parties adopted everything the ACP was trying to get done.

I agree, we need a new party. But everyone has their own ideas and wants to run it.

Phylo
First, "n" (post #110) correctly quotes your article when he writes,

"The vast majority of the large corporations that did not pay taxes had net losses, he said, and thus no income on which to pay taxes. “The notion that there is a large pool of untaxed corporate profits is incorrect.”

I would add that many of these (net loss) companies are startups. Our tax code deliberately avoids taxing them because it knows that, with time, a few of them will grow into Microsofts, FedExs, etc and return sizeable tax revenues.

Second, conservatives don't believe in some kind of "no pays any taxes" scheme as you wrote. We believe (1) taxes should be paid at the same rate by everyone and (2) taxes should only be collected to pay for legitimate expenses, that is, those that are Constitutionally authorized.

Richard
I assure you we republicans are not happy being in the same sentence with democra$$es.

Party of FDR (the most socialist president until BO) JFK (a proponent of LOWER taxes) Clinton (impeached lying liar) Obama (lets spend moer $ to pay our bills)

Yep you got us good on that one. We only have Lincoln (Nuff said) Teddy Roosevelt (conservationist) DDR (defeated Hitler) Ronald Reagan (defeated communisim) yep you got us real good.

AMEN
Can I get an AMEN!!!! for Liberty Guy

Sue: Sarah Palin
I think the REAL reason people are so against Sarah Palin is that she may represent a new type of politician and a new party leader. She is against big government and big spending. She likes to hunt and has nothing against guns since she isn't worried about angering Americans by taking away their freedoms. She likes the Constitution as it is writen and isn't trying to take away the freedoms reserved for the people. She comes across as a basically honest person instead of sleaze, and she doesn't give the media a handle so they can "manage" her.

I have no idea if she would make an excellent politicians (from my standpoint - not Washington's) but all seem to fear her. That tends to make me like her considering who does fear her.

Do you even read the news?
"I think the REAL reason people are so against Sarah Palin is that she may represent a new type of politician and a new party leader. She is against big government and big spending."

So against spending that she is pushing for a $2 billion road. Yes, 2 billion on a road. $3-4 million per mile. Now that's some serious fiscal restraint.
Maybe next time try for a reason which might be more plausible, like the fact that she has a double digit IQ.

Opinions vs Facts...
Mr. Sowell states:

"Most Americans' principles are closer to those of the Republicans than to those of the Democrats"

the problem with a statement like that is Mr. Sowell states it as if indeed it is a fact when it is really nothing more than his opinion and conjecture. It is also a load of horse manure IMHO, in the same vein of Republicans saying that the U.S. is a "center right" country.

Why is clear thinking so rare...
in Washington?

One word.

Lawyers

Dr. Sowell is right on again. Thanks Doc.

By the way, I did't see Hal Dumahue or Wobbie in this thread. Nothing clever to say? Or maybe they took my advice and left the basement and headed out to look for jobs.

The Doctor

Left Angle: Opinion v. facts ...
Opinion: Leftangle knows what he is talking about.

Fact: Leftangle can't tell the difference between his a**hole and his elbow.

Obama ran to the right to win...
...then switch back to the left of most democrats to govern.

Sue: See what I mean?
One word about Palin and people like sdf start foaming at the mouth for fear she MIGHT be more acceptable than the politicians who give them money all the time.

All indications--
All indications so far show that the majority of congress, but not all, will do what their puppet masters tell them to do. They know that they will be well rewarded if and when they "leave" office, so they spin their stories to the sheep that elected them. So do we the public win like we should, you be the judge. I know my answer. Good column by Dr. Sowell.

Right on Dr. Sowell
I believe all politicians in congress today are outside/above the normal citizen. Nothing matters.
I agree the Republicans in the Senate should follow the House. Just simply say "NO" to this bill.

sdf
If I am not mistaken your math indicates thats a 6,000 mile road? Where in Alaska are they building a 6,000 mile road?

As to IQ a double digit IQ (99) is well within the standard deviation of normal intelligence (100) and nothing to be ashamed of. Most of us are in the center of the bell shaped curve.

Joke Of The Day.
"Strongest ethics and accountability rules of any administration in the history of this country." Spoken by none other than Robert Gibbs...B.Hussein's press secretary.

Jim:
You said, "I believe all politicians in congress today are outside/above the normal citizen."

I agree about "outside" but not "above" although I believe most if not all of the politicians believe they are "above" the normal citizen. Many years ago now there was a vote to give the Panama Canal back to Panama. Senator Bumpers (D-AR) voted to do it in defiance of his voters. When asked why he voted that way his answer was, "I'm up here in Washington now. I know what is better for the people in Arkansas than they do. So I vote for what is best for Arkansas."

Excellent Dr. Sowell, Of Course
Well said. Republicans have got to start acting like their mission.

Obama - A Demagogue For The Ages
Rowly offers, "Joke Of The Day. "Strongest ethics and accountability rules of any administration in the history of this country." Spoken by none other than Robert Gibbs...B.Hussein's press secretary."

Too Funny!

It seems Obama thinks ethics is over-rated.

Rowly in GA:
Thanks, I needed that laugh.

Obama is learning now that talk is cheap.

Ethics and accountability are words.

Now Obama must rise above the talk and walk the walk.

It's going to be difficult for the master of rhetoric. Teleprompters only get you so far.

Wasn't it Nancy Pelosi the one who in 2006 promised to "drain the swamp"? I guess that swamp drain got plugged up when fat boys Murtha, Frank, Dodd, and Schumer got to it.

Tax "Relief"
Pretty soon Oblahma & Gang will be sending us a "tax relief" check for about $ 1,000 - in order to "create jobs"...

If I spend it :
At Wal-mart - the money goes to China
Buy a quality new car it goes to Germany
Buy Fruits and Veggies it goes to Guatemala, Honduras & Mexico
Buy Gas it goes to the Arabs
Buy "Stuff" or toys it goes to Taiwan
Buy a computer it goes to India...
Just about the only things that I can spend this on to "create jobs" in America would be on Hookers and beer.
I will surely do my part as a good patriot!
Egon

Yes, but...
We've given the Democrats eight years in the 1990's and they screwed us. Recently, we gave the Republicans eight years, and they screwed us. Now, it's Barack and the Democrats, then the Republicans, then the Democrats, then Republicans,etc... We ain't goin nowhere(good) in this country until we find a third political party and give them a chance. They'll be called "The Constitutionalist's". Because you know you're gettin screwed if you vote Democrat or Republican. Screwed. The evidence is everywhere. Where do you want me to start? Both of these political parties are SH*T.

Love it Egon!
Me too! Looks like hookers and beer from here on out. Support America! Buy a hooker and some beers.

Egon in FL:
Good one. Reply of the day!

Bush's stimulus in 2008 did little to spur economic growth, what makes Obaaamaaa think that another tax relief check will do anything different?

The most effect it will have is in buying votes from the "downtrodden" who do not pay taxes at all and are typically too naive to understand economics in a capitalist system.

Clean Up Corruption - Hire Bad Guys
It seems Obama's plan to eliminate tax cheats is to put them in office so that we can keep an eye on them. Brilliant!

No wonder Obama did not want to publish his grades before the election. We are quickly learning that he is much better at acting than doing. Before, he was just an empty suit. Now, he is an empty suit with dumb ideas.

Lucky us.

sdf
How much would you be willing to pay for a mile of raod?

At least there will be a road when Sarah's done. What will we have after BO has spent 800 BILLION on this "stimulus" package?

For Liberty guy
"I would add that many of these (net loss) companies are startups. Our tax code deliberately avoids taxing them because it knows that, with time, a few of them will grow into Microsofts, FedExs, etc and return sizeable tax revenues."

'Net loss' companies aren't taxed because there is nothing to tax. The federal tax code taxes profits. If a company is a "net loss" company there is nothing to tax.

Dave "R.I.P. U.S.A."
You generally drain a swamp to get rid of the alligators. Nancy simply introduced large crocodiles to run off the gators. The swamp is simply worse now.

sdf
Wasn't it Obama who came up with the idea of building roads to help the economy? It seems that I remember something like that. His stimulus program was to build roads and bridges, wasn't it?

Republicans as Democrats
Right on Tom. To replicate the Reagan and Newt vision you need to have an IQ. Who's got vision now. Certainly not Obama. He's the poster child for rhetoric trumping vision. The problem with Republican visionaries is that the Democrats demonize them thinking vision is the purvey of the liberals. "Somewhere out there beyond the stary sky" there's got to be a Republican leader with vision. He just needs to come forward, be his own man or woman and not compare himself to Reagan. Vision is the purvey of Republicans

theBaron
I know it's a popular line among right wing pundits to say corporations don;t pay taxes; consumers do. And there might be a little truth to it, but it mostly false.

Business can't just raise prices because their taxes go up. Price depends on what the market will bear. I charge $40 an hour for my painting business. If my taxes go up, I would have to suck it up myself because I don't think I could charge more.

Did Exxon raise prices because they paid more in taxes? There is no evidence of that.

So this line that corporations don't pay taxes sounds like something cooked up in a focus group in some right wing think tank. And then people like you repeat it over and over again, thinking you're saying something smart, like the people on the radio, when you're really saying something that simply isn't true.

You guys are fixated on lower taxes. Lowering taxes is a good idea IF it stimulates the economy. A tax cut for the middle class will have some stimulative effect, but not nearly as much as creating a job. And tax cuts for wealthy investors right now would do almost no good whatsoever.

Write the SOB's in the Sen.
and tell them bipartisanship died when the Big O beat McCain.

No more Mr. Nice Guy. Just say, "No."

This *stimulus* will hype the national debt, force us into debtors to Saudis and China, create inflation down the road, and WORSE--reward ACORN and all the Demmo-rats who stole this election and buy more votes for fraud and corruption in Chicago and DC.

JUST A REMINDER:
While we're standing around with our jaws dropping to the ground over the three ring circus since Obama was sworn in, we're still spending $700,000,000,000 per year on foreign oil.

No one is talking about domestic drilling anymore.

Want a stimulus? Want to create jobs? Want to save money?

Drill here, drill now.

Don't wait for oil to go back to $150.00 per barrel.

Here's a joke:
What did the Irish liberal say about Obama when he found out what a dope he voted for?

Give up?

(now repeat this answer several times until you "get" it)

"Whale oil beef hooked!"

Soon Everyone Will Realize

Soon Everyone Will Realize that Obama's "Recovery Plan" was never meant to stabilize America, but to make the problems worse.

Obama will NOT let this crises be wasted.

For Obama to bring his plans into fruition the situation must get worse and then he can began to Nationalize the production systems in America.

The Nationalization of Banking has already begun and is well on its way.

Even the most ardent Obama supporters will begin to see the Obamunism taking place, some are already complaining about it.

Phylo lies by omission
In addition to the paragraph from Phylo's link that "n" and Liberty Guy referenced, check out some other info from Phylo's own link that disproves the point of Phylo's post.

"Among foreign corporations, a slightly higher percentage, 68 percent, did not pay taxes during the period covered - compared with 66 percent for United States corporations. Even with these numbers, corporate tax receipts have risen sharply as a percentage of federal revenue in recent years."

"...the nearly 1,000 largest United States corporations were more likely than smaller ones to pay taxes."

"...the largest corporations represented only 1 percent of the total number of corporations but more than 90 percent of all corporate assets."

“The notion that there is a large pool of untaxed corporate profits is incorrect.”

So, when you read the whole article you learne that:

1. The dominant majority of the richest corporations paid taxes.

2. Despite complaints from liberal pukes like Phylo and Senator Levin (who requested the study because he wants to whine about corporations not paying taxes), tax revenues from corporate profits ROSE during the period studied.

3. Corporations that had taxable profits, for the most part, paid them.

4. The article also doesn't distinguish between Chapter C corporations, which have a top marginal tax rate of 35%, and Subchapter S corporations, which generally have no tax liability on their profits (shareholders of Subchapter S corporations must declare their share of the corporations profits on their personal returns, and pay taxes on them as individual income taxes).

Phylo (and the author of his link) lies by selectively choosing the stat from the study that casts corporations in the worst possible light.

Naive and dangerous
House and Senate Republicans who insist on playing "a gentleman's game" by letting people like Holder in without a fight, I will now call

WHITE FLAG REPUBLICANS

These are Republicans who refuse to fight for Conservatism, refusing to understand that a war is being waged by Democrats.

Drain The Swamp
All Dems, Mods, LiRINOs, and RINOs, who support this Print-a-looza, need to be eliminated. PERIOD.

They do not know what they are doing and their calculators lack the zeros to imagine what my pre-born great-great-grandchildren will have to pay in taxes to recover from the spending and national taxes.

Even my fellow Frenchies out there rioted to oppose stimulus.

My doubloons are growing more and more valuable.

Of course, we could just use "The Jim Jones Economy" since the gooferment MIGHT be able to pay off our debts with the death tax.

Dave "R.I.P. U.S.A."
Ouch!! I hope you have a day job because you'll never make a living with jokes if this is your best! I winced instead of laughed.

Retired Geek # 158.. Oh Yeah !

It's like the 'Night of the Living Dummies' in Detroit.

'The Walking Wounded' moniker takes on a whole new meaning today. That being an Emotional Trauma versus a Physical one.

Boy, is The American Dream shot in the a** or what?

All hail the Great Gazoo !!

Corporation/Business Taxes
Despite Phylo - No company can take any expenses without charging customers. Taxes are expenses. Despite Detroit automotive companies, no business can stand taking a loss. If they do, they have to borrow. If they remain in business, they have to repay the loans. Phylo says he can't afford to charge his customers more - but if the tax increases to a point where he doesn't take home enough to live on he will either have to charge his customers more or go out of business. This is more critical for a small business than a large one since small ones generally can't get loans unless they show a profit. He might be able to withstand a little more loss from his profits but that is all.

Big businesses have excellent accounting departments whose job it is to find any tax loop holes they can. And there are plenty of them. The corporations do pay taxes - but not as much a percentage as smaller businesses end up doing. Foreign companies have an even better tax break if they have commercial properties in the U.S. For instance, an automotive company can charge their dealerships more for the cars than the dealerships can sell them for. They then pay the dealerships sums that offically keep them afloat but making zero profits. Actually that is a profit transfer back to their headquarters in another country. That's one reason so many do not pay taxes here.

While even large corporations may absorb temporary or small increases in taxes by cutting the profits and amounts they pay to stockholders, they cannot do that for long periods or for large sums. Therefore sooner or later all taxes are paid by the customers just as any other expense would be.

And if it is a tax, all businesses of that type would pay the same. So in Phylo's business, while he might not think his customers would pay more, they will when all the painting companies have to charge more or go out of business.

For Retired Geek
"For Obama to bring his plans into fruition the situation must get worse and then he can began to Nationalize the production systems in America."

From time to time we get liberal trolls on TH who argue that what the American left is trying to impose is not communism because (according to the trolls) communisn doesn't exist unless the state owns the means of production.

It will be interesting to see how the trolls justify Obama's plan, as described by you, as something other than the next logical step toward communism.

All Dems tax cheats or ones Obama knows?

Are all Democrats tax cheats, or just the ones Barack Obama knows?
------------------------
Feb 3, 2:55 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) - "Nancy Killefer withdrew her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government on Tuesday, saying she didn't want her bungling of payroll taxes on her household help to become a distraction for the Obama administration.

Killefer was the second major nominee to withdraw. Within hours, former Sen. Tom Daschle also withdrew his nomination to be secretary of health and human services.

In a brief letter to President Barack Obama, Killefer, the 55-year-old executive with consulting giant McKinsey & Co., wrote that she had "come to realize in the current environment that my personal tax issue of D.C. unemployment tax could be used to create exactly the kind of distraction and delay" that must be avoided in responding to urgent economic problems.

She offered no further details of her tax difficulties."

Obama is not what he seems, nor is he otherwise.

Dr Sowell is right, (Of Course)
By the way, Dave RIP that was a good one!

For years we have heard and know, that the Federal Gov't has no money, we are broke. Would someone tell me why someone does not say it. The Feds, in other words the taxpayers in this country are tapped, there is no money for any stimulus package. There is no money for Infrastructure, sex education, banks, or the poor folks down the street.

Until someone plays the little boy in the old fairy tale, and says it...."But he doesn't have any clothes on!" We are going to get no where fast here in the United States.

The person who does that, and says, people you need to depend on yourselves, and NOT Washington DC, will be the next big winner!

not so wise one
No. I didn't lie. I linked to the column so anyone could read the whole thing you moron. The point I was making was two-fold: 2/3 of companies paid no taxes from 1998 to 2005. But I also made the point that, as a percentage of GDP, the US collects less in taxes from corporations than every other nation on earth. Only one country collects less in taxes as a percentage of GDP: that would be ICELAND!

I was making these point in response to the dufus who said American corporations are paying the highest taxes in the industrial world. That is simply not true.

And lowering their taxes at this point will not produce more jobs. They won't suddenly say, "Hey, we have more money, let's go hire some people to stand around and do nothing!" The only reason companies hire workers is if they have more demand for their products or services than can be handled by their current work force.

Tax cuts are not the answer this time folks. We need to boost the middle class and create jobs.

Trying to convince Republicans of this reminds of something Tolstoy said:

"I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives." Tolstoy

Phylo out.

Dave "R.I.P. U S A"
WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite the tax problems faced by high-level nominees, and the exceptions made to the no-lobbyists pledge, President Barack Obama's spokesman is defending the administration's ethical standards.
Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday, "The bar that we set is the highest that any administration in the country has ever set."

During a briefing filled with questions about Tom Daschle's decision to withdraw from consideration to be Health and Human Services secretary, Gibbs pointed to experts who describe the administration's ethics rules as the strongest in history.

He also said those experts recognized that Obama would need to make exceptions to his pledge to run an administration free of former lobbyists.

Obama's choice to become the No. 2 official at the Defense Department recently lobbied for military contractor Raytheon. And his choice as deputy secretary at Health and Human Services, lobbied through most of last year as an anti-tobacco advocate.

What is the difference between socialism and communism?

Socialism can only grow directly from Capitalism.

“The goal of socialism is communism.” Vladimir Lenin

Communism can only be achieved from Socialism or by violent revolution.

Socialism's slogan is: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his DEEDS."

Communism's slogan is: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his NEEDS."

Major difference is between 'DEEDS' and 'NEEDS'

Socialism and communism are alike in that both are systems of production for use, based on public ownership of the means of production and centralized planning.

Socialism is the first step in the process of developing the productive forces to achieve abundance and changing the mental and spiritual outlook of the people.

Socialism is the necessary transition stage from capitalism to communism unless there is a violent revolution. (Dialectics)

There are two kinds of property to a Socialist:
----------------------------------
1) Property used for private enjoyment, i.e. Automobile (if by deeds you can pay for it).
2) Property used to produce the Automobile.

Socialists will allow you personal property i.e. Automobile, but will take away and own the property used to manufacture the Automobile.

There is one kind of property to a Communist:
----------------------------------
That which is owned by the state (everything), including the citizens of that state.

The communist principle of distribution according to needs, is not immediately possible and practical until the Socialist framework is in place.

The conjecture that the Barack Obama Socialism, is NOT Marxist thinking is both foolish and plain silly.

Maybe it's time to consider a 3rd Party
I know, conventional wisdom says a 3rd party can't win, but why is that considered gospel? Third parties have won statewide election in Alaska because they articulated the view of the majority of people. Admittedly, Alaska has easy standards for 3rd parties, but what prevents us from making that happen on the national level if the Republicans won't turn back to conservative principles.

It seems the Republicans (most anyway) owe too much to constituencies other than the voters. This especially true of the Senate, whose members get much bigger bucks from PACs and the like than the House. The House Republicans (and apparently 11 Democrats) are worried about relection in 20 months. The Senate, not so much. I've already done this, but hope many of you will join me in writing to your Senators (you do know who they are, right?) and telling them what you want. Makes no difference if they're Republican or Democrat. Tell them how they can represent you by paring down this bloated "stimulus" (otherwise known as economic strangulation) package. If it's not pared down, the brave ones will vote against it. If they don't, we remember and we vote against them. We need to let them know that and we need to stick to our guns. And, as we move forward, we may need to consider whether the Republican Party still meets conservative needs.

RINOs
I'm sick of Republicans of the McCain mold who want to make nice with the socialists across the isle. Until the Republican party can find enough members with some spine and some principles who can actually articulate a clear and concise message to the American public, the giveaway kings in the Democratic party are going to take this country down the path economic and social of ruin. If the spineless Republicans in the senate compromise (as I fear they are inclined to do), then we'll just get to ruin a little slower than Obama wants. I hope they filibuster this steaming pile of excrement to oblivion.....but lately, I'm getting more and more accustomed to disappointment.

Phylo - what do you know?
Thomas Sowell graduated magna cumlaude from Harvard and received his Master's degree in economics from Columbia and a doctorate in economics from the U of Chicago. He held jobs with the Department of Labor and AT&T; he taught at Cornell, Rutgers, Amherst, Brandeis and UCLA (where a good friend of mine took courses from him in the mid-80s).

He's saying this economic "stimulus" package will strange the American economy. Which one of us should we believe -- the highly qualified economist or you?

Forgive me. I must have not been paying attention. What are your qualifications to provide correction to Prof. Sowell on economic theory and practice?

When they say
When they say we could have more votes if we include more fringes, they are painting us as racist and biased.

If we don't like gay marriage, they say we are against gays.

If we don't like the song words of rappers, they say we are against blacks.

If we want only legal immigration, they say we are against immigration.

We are a small, strong group that stands for God and on principles.

All good events that saved our way of life and its people, came from a small group. When they say we need to do as they say, we no longer stand for anything, but lie on comfort, entitlements, and contempt.

chew on this for a while
I made a mistake earlier when I said our corporate tax rate is the lowest on earth. It's merely the lowest among industrialzed nations.
Here's a report that spells out where we are:

A new report out by the World Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers shows that the United States’ total corporate tax burden actually ranks as the 76th lowest out of over 100 countries. [World Bank]

And according to the U.S. Treasury Department: In the last seven years, the U.S. has collected an average of 2.4 percent of its GDP in corporate taxes—less than the average 3.4 percent collected by other industrialized nations. If laws remain the same, U.S. corporate taxes will be only 1.9 percent of GDP in less than ten years.

The Economic Policy Institute shows that American workers increasingly carry more of the tax burden than corporations do. In the 1950s, corporate income taxes accounted for about a quarter of federal tax revenues; now they account for just one-tenth, leaving workers to pay the difference.

And Republicans want to lower corporate income taxes? That's your priority now? Seriously?

Phylo - sigh
Wrote - We need to boost the middle class and create jobs.

How is it "boosting" the middle class and "creating jobs" by removing "small and medium fish barriers from waterways" -- otherwise known as dismantling smaller electrical generation dams. These "barriers" (which are easily routed round) provide electricity to suburban and rural areas. A few short-term jobs are temporarily created to remove them. How will that generation capacity be replaced? Wind farms? Solar panels? Again, a few short-term jobs created, if environmental groups don't protest the wind farms or the solar fields (they will!). The communities that currently rely on those dams will now be forced to pay exorbitant fees to buy from the grid that eventually leads to a coal- or diesel-powered generation plant.

What we need is for businesses (90% are small businesses making less than 4 million a year) to know that they aren't going to be hit hard by taxes that will force them out of business. I know several small businesses who have laid off people in recent months not because they don't have the customer base to support their staff anymore, but because they feel they need to cut back on expenses to plan for a future with less profit due to taxation. It's not about loss of business, it's about planning ahead for loss of profit so that they don't lose the business altogether.

This "stimulus" package is going to induce hyper-inflation and increased taxation if it goes through. Oh, it may create a handful of jobs around the country, but in the long run, it's going to harm our economy and then maybe none of us will have jobs.

Buy a clue, Phylo, the gov't has to pay back all that money we borrow to create short-term jobs. What do we do then? Borrowing money is not the answer! Not taking the money of those who already create the jobs in this country is a far better solution!

Thomas Sowell strikes me as a man who is too steeped in theory and not enough real world application. His comments on the current crisis seem overly rooted in ideology and out of step.

I think Tolstoy had people like Sowell in mind when he wrote the following:

"I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives." Tolstoy

It's just a computer game, but I highly recommend it for the economically challenged among us. You quickly learn what happens when you borrow money to "grow an economy" rather than allowing it to grow naturally, by the will of the people.

Morgus The O'Magnificient
Every day that Obama air raids the economy will only make it actually worse. He will need Morgus to fix the financial mess.

If the IRS wants to assault anyone about failure to pay taxes, it should start aiming at Capitol Hill. Class warfare by Tax Cheats.

People will "Remember the Alamo", but, certainly, will not if the Two-Americas of Tax-n-Spenders follows suit.

Phylo - go study Mr. Sowell's history
He's worked in the "real world". AT&T, etc. Heck, he's from the real world where people work hard and have to pay back their debts. Also, I have a very real-world practical friend who took classes under him at UCLA and Mark says Mr. Sowell knows the business end of things as well as any economist.

Just keep quoting Tolstoy and ignore the economists because, hey, a Russian writer is a far better source of economic hard facts in a capitalistic society than someone who has actually studied the theory, facts and figures.

I know, you want your money fix NOW and you don't care that in 10, 20, 30, 40 years we'll be paying interest on those loans to the tune of billions of dollars a year. Oh, yeah, WE won't be. Our grandchildren will be. And, the guy who owns the company they work for -- will probably have a Chinese name and be exempt from taxes since his grandparents bailed the US out in 2009. Hey, but you'll get your few thousand dollars soon and that's all that matters.

C'mon now
Ya'll better start being nice to each other. Before too long, we're all gonna be standing in the same soup lines together and living in tents together. But, make sure you watch closely and enjoy watching our government spend all YOUR money. Isn't it fun! I remember some a**hole said "I'm gonna spread the wealth around"

Let Consumers Pick The Winners & Losers
Philo Se Fiser offers, "The Economic Policy Institute shows that American workers increasingly carry more of the tax burden than corporations do."

Absolutely silly logic.

You do know that corporations are fictitious creatures that have no need for money, right?

A Corporations' profits are either used as a Consumer to buy assets (such as employees, goods, equipment or services) or dispensed to the owners as taxable income. As you can see, corporate profits are taxed twice.

The neat thing about Corporations is that they get their money by way of the good will of other Consumers --- essentially, they are the winners hand-picked by citizens.

On the other hand, the Government gets their money by fiat, a tax levied from citizens, and, then, spend it as the Politicians see fit. Essentially, the Politicians pick the winners, not the citizens.

Personally, I prefer giving tax breaks to the enterprises that work for the good will of individual citizens than those that work for the good will of Politicians.

Obama already tired of White House

WASHINGTON (AP) - "On the rockiest day of his young administration, President Barack Obama did what surely made him happy for a while.

He left.

With little notice, the president and first lady Michelle Obama bolted the gated compound of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in their tank of a limousine on Tuesday. They ended up at a Washington public school, greeted by children who could not care less about the collapse of a Cabinet secretary nomination.

"We were just tired of being in the White House," the president candidly told the gleeful second-graders at Capital City Public Charter School."
