Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

If making speeches is one of the tests of a President of the United States, then Barack Obama has passed his first test with flying colors. He has understood the varied constituencies, and the various hopes and fears he had to address. He said the kinds of things that all these constituencies wanted to hear.

As a speech, it was the best inaugural address since Ronald Reagan. This is not to judge the substantive merits or demerits of what he said. Anyone who judges any political speech by its substance-- much less by what actions follow-- is likely to be disappointed.

However, a political speech is more than just a theatrical performance of the moment. The ability to make a speech that connects with a wide range of people can be a political power in itself.

That power enabled Ronald Reagan to put through legislation that created "the Reagan revolution," even though his party never controlled both houses of Congress while he was in the White House.

Nobody wanted the Gipper to go on the air and say that he was one of those in Congress who was obstructing the President's program. In addition to the powers that automatically come with the office, the President has what Theodore Roosevelt called the "bully pulpit" from which to shape public opinion.

That bully pulpit was nowhere used more powerfully than by TR's cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the famous "first hundred days" of FDR's administration, so much far-reaching legislation was rushed through Congress that it is doubtful if most Congressmen ever read it all, much less had time to think about it.

President Obama now has that bully pulpit and has shown that he has the rhetorical skills to use it, whether for good or ill. The unprecedented throngs that filled the vast reaches of the Washington Mall and lined the parade route from the capitol to the White House shows that he has the people behind him as he assumes office.

Secret service agents may have been concerned (or appalled) when the Obamas got out of their limousine and started walking in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue. But anyone who might have tried to harm them would probably have been torn limb from limb by the crowd before anyone could have gotten there to arrest him.

It was an auspicious beginning. But presidencies are not measured by their beginnings. A long list could be made of Presidents who came to the White House with high hopes and left with bitter disappointments.

Inevitably, much is being made of the fact that Barack Obama is the first black President of the United States.

He is indeed the first "African American" President, unlike the millions of other black Americans whose ancestors were here longer than millions of white Americans. By the time that there was a United States of America, most black Americans had never seen Africa and neither had their grandparents.

There is no group less eligible to be called hyphenated Americans. Nevertheless, Barack Obama is one of them-- symbolically, at least-- and race is part of the symbolism of this moment.

Those who doubted that a black man could be elected to the highest office in the land no longer have a leg to stand on. That can be a force for good, when young blacks can no longer be told that there is no point in their trying to get ahead in this society because "the man" is going to stop them.

In another sense, the Obama presidency may not be nearly as big a change in the country as some might think. Colin Powell could probably have been elected eight years ago. But you don't know it can happen until it happens.

No doubt the race-hustling industry will continue, and no doubt their chief victims will be blacks, especially young blacks, who buy the paralyzing picture of victimhood and the counterproductive resentments which sap energies that could be better used to improve their own lives.

Now that we have the first black President of the United States, maybe we can move ahead to the time when we can forget about "the first" whatever to do what. There is too much serious work to do to spend more time on that.

So the "right wing" can just go now?
Oh, so the other half of this country who didn't vote for Obama are now formally dismissed? Thanks, Ranger29. I guess we'll take our tax revenues and productivity and "just sulk." When you figure out that you can't fund bailouts and Disneyland-ish social programs without people who actually work for a living, go ahead and let "us" know.

Ranger, BO has taken the mantle
of the dim party and energized it to Hitleresqe proportions. This has become the pschological projection of all projections. The divisive dims have a new king of divisiveness with a smoother delivery than BJ and a definite improvement over the shrill witch, Hi-liar-y.
He will usher in the Socialist States of America and note that the "United" is removed. I can be American enough to respect his leadership if he shows statesman qualities and governs from the center. but if he continues the propagandized, politicized, divisive rhetoric like he included in this first speech I can only conclude that he will succumb to his commie tendencies and there will likely be youth and truth squads dispatched.

That's rich
McCain was saddled with right wing. That is almost comical. He wouldn't know the conservative cause if it bit him in the buttocks. His only true conservatism was supporting the war on terror. The fact that he pandered to the dim leftists and illegal lovers was one thing that BO got right. He was going to be 4 more years of Bush accept he might of signed some things that at least Bush vetoed.

Obama's crowning for the masses
The coronation of Obama is over... Did anyone notice that when he took the oath of office he mis-spoke or tripped over his own tongue about 3 times? At least the VP (JB) knows how to take an oath. BHO is lost with his teleprompter, and when he needs to make those tough decisions he's not going to have a speech writer to give him the words. I give him six months before his house of scoundrels starts to crumble. BTW, the lefties and righties only compose 30% of the public, 70% of us don't want to see this country harmed by a rampantly liberal government which will drastically change us for the worse.

Role model for young Americans?
I didn't vote for Obama, because I'm truly opposed to abortion and euthanasia as well as other social anomolies that are manifesting themselves.

The thought crossed my mind though, as I watched Obama and his family today, that he might well be a superb role model to children born to single parents of a "family man" and an "educated man." As prominent as he is, and with the idol worship of the MSM, will no doubt continue to be, he might well serve to display to children how marriage is supposed to be, and how education benefits people. Maybe marriage, parenthood, and scholarship will come back into fashion as a result of his prominence. If that happened, it would go a long way to cure a lot of the pathologies that are negatively effecting American society.

re: Ranger
I'm not going anywhere to "sulk". Just as those defeated by Bush in 2000 and 2004 stuck around to debate him on issues on which they found him lacking, I'll do the same now.

Perhaps Obama will prove more adept at leadership, and will learn that government intrusion on individual liberty and the economy is not the key to solving our problems. Where he does realize that, I'll support him. Where he doesn't, just as I did with Presidents Bush and Clinton, I'll oppose him. And, just as I did with Presidents Bush and Clinton, I expect to be opposing more often than I'm supporting. Rarely does government advocate less power for the government and more power for the individual.

As Mary said above, I believe perhaps Obama can serve as a positive role model for young men (of all ethnicities) about being a father and pursuing education rather than blaming others for his station in life. I sincerely hope that's the case, and I wish the best for the new President and his family.

I liked Obama's Inaug. Speech

I liked Obama's speech. He touched all the right aspects of what is facing the country even though he has no plan on how to address many of the problems.

I particularly liked his statement to Muslim leaders where Obama declared they will not be remembered for what they destroy, but for what they create. He is the first leader anywhere to phrase the debate in those terms. He needs to do more of that and re-enforce that message.

One of the problems the Islamic faith has is they never endured a "reformation" as did the other major religions. They have never stopped, taken and deep breath, and analize the teachings and practises of the religion. Its long overdue.

Many left-wingers can't get enough
of gloating over the vanquished. This is why they are dogged with failures in their midst, like ranger 29. His hero, Barack, would disdain his post. Abort your anti-right tantrum and get in step with the new president.

Reflections on the Obama speech
I thought his speech seemed more like a campaign speech. While appealing for unity and crossing political lines, he took cheap political shots. While appearing to be graceful, his speech lacked grace. His speech seems to suggests that America is in such bad shape that only he has the moral authority to fix this broken land. Ain't we blessed to have Obama as our leader?!?! He seems so full of himself.

So, in the end, his speech did not live up to what it could have been. Obama needs to learn to be graceful, humble and human. Obama needs to realize and accept he is a man, a human being in a office leading other men, other human beings. Once Obama accepts that he is not a super moral deity perhaps then he can do the job he was elected to do.

Mary MO
Mary, do you remember "The Bill Cosby Show?" It ruled TV land in America, 8 years. The central character, Dr. Huxtable, certainly was a role model. Did he, or the show, have any measurable impact? Where that kind of impact was especially needed?

Yes, it helped sell a lot of product.

Still, it was a good show.

Obama won 52% of the votes, with the
mainstream media fully behind him.
Former President Bush won 51% of the votes, despite the opposition of the msm.

A good conservative Republican can win in 2012,
especially when the conservative voters will be
be voting instead of sitting out the election.

Not to be too far off topic...
WTH was that pathetic grade school poetry after his speech. Is it just me, or was that woman's poem and delivery absolutely horrendous?

Don't worry people,
In just a few hours the insanity of Captain Worthless and his brown nose will be gone from Townhall for another day.

He just never seems to get that he's not wnated here and we could really care less what he thinks or has to say.

BTW Captain Wobbie Worthless,
You've never answered the question on how your "Ramos and Compean will remain in prison for a long time" worked out for you.

Why not? Don't you just hate is that you're proven wrong so often? LOSER!

20 Jan 2009
The BEGINNING of an ERROR!!

Obama's speech
Was full of nothing but meaningless platitudes delivered to people who believe every lie he ever told during the campaign and are waiting breathlessly for him to start taking care of their every need.

They don't know it yet, but they're all about to be very disappointed when their Messiah is unable to deliver on any of the empty promises he made.

Race Baiters are hating this
I wonder what Jesse, Al and the other race baiters are going to do now. How are they going to convince blacks that they can't get ahead because they are black and if you would just give them money they will take on the "man" for you? I'm sure they will still do well in this victim society the psychologists and liberals have created.

BTW did anyone notice the stock market reaction to Obama? I wonder how the MSM will spin that. Maybe something like..."Bush sabotages markets on way out."

A call for sacrifice
“I call upon all responsible, productive people to work hard and sacrifice so that we can redistribute their incomes to those who will never be able to find a decent job because they refuse to buy into bourgesoise middle class values like staying in school or finding a husband before starting a family but will, nevertheless, get on a bus and go vote for me wherever I need to send them.”

Barack Hussein Obama (FBPOTUS)

Work & Values
Didn't BO's speech say something about work and values? Let's hope people have to work for their government checks, especially the free, unearned ones.

Been there,done that...
...got the T-shirt to prove it!

We old Catholics remember the old days. The common belief was that no Catholic could be elected president in America. The myth was widely believed in the Catholic community because of Al Smiths' defeat in 1928.However,Al Smith was a corrupt New York political hack and that was why he was defeated, not his religion.

I am very proud of the fact that I never voted for JFK,I voted for Nixon. But the overwhelming Catholic community did vote for him simply because of his religion and some of the attacks on him from the nuckle-dragging KKK types. But one thing he did do was get rid of the myth that a Catholic could not be elected to the White House.I hope the Black community is learning that lesson now,but we will have to wait and see. It's the political ideology, stupid, not the religion or the color!

What politicians say
means nothing. They'll say anything to win support. What counts is what they DO.

Little Wobbie did say something of worth
It is my fervent hope that every democrat bill is passed by JUST democrats. That's what bothered me most about the $700 billion spending bailout bill last september. NO Republicans should have voted yes on that bill (especially Johnny McShamnesty) and the dems all knew it! But just like Charlie Brown and Lucy with the football, the repubs got snookered, AGAIN! Let's winnow out the RINO & CINOS. OK?

Stone Age Classifications
Despite how much you may happen to disagree or agree with Barack Obama’s particular view on any number of issues, it would seem that our 44th president will very probably cause more members of our species to begin to realize that the intelligence, knowledge, judgment, determination, values, reasoning ability, language skills and all the rest of what is produced by the brain inside the skull of a particular individual who has been elected President of the United States is what really matters, not the assortment of physical features which characterize the body in which that brain happens to reside. 21st century humans would consider the idea of categorizing books in a library based on the color and other features of the covers of those books to be absurd. When will similar Stone Age classifications of the members of our species be considered equally absurd?

Interesting, Dr. Sowell

Surprising, too.

Obama, a former senator with a 100 per cent liberal voting record, has not convinced me of anything.

Charismatic speaker? Yes. But he's always been big on style. That's his special thing.

Also, what about the ubiquitous, very liberal mainstream media. Think this unending adulation is a good thing? Soon Chris Matthews will be televised kissing his feet!

Serious thinking people should find this troubling at the very least. Somewhat dangerous, also.

Wouldn't you agree, Dr. Sowell?

OBAMA, LINCOLN & THE IMAGE OF GREATNESS
Authentically great men have no need for the symbols, imagery, style and legacies of other great men. True greatness is original, innovative, genuine and real and needs no models to imitate. Who did Lincoln imitate in his presidential campaign, or in the period leading up to his inauguration? Whose Bible did he use to swear him in as President? Who did the Roosevelts imitate and ape? Who was Kennedy's model? Who did Reagan emulate? Answer: No one. These men were among the great ones of history and walked in no one's shadow. Even George Bush as he rose to power drew strength from his principles, convictions and ideals, and little from his predecessors. But not Barack Obama. Never in the history of presidential politics, never in a campaign or in the pre-inaugural stage, has a candidate or President-elect leaned so heavily on the great men of the past. Why has Obama been doing this? Is it simply out of reverence for these men? Is he paying homage to them? Is that the reason? Or is it because of his deficiencies? Is it because he's just a conventional liberal politician with a dash of charisma and a bit of charm but with no exceptional qualities? With little intellectual and moral worth? A mediocre man with the gift of gab but with no real greatness in him? Who desperately wants to appear great and will settle for its image over the reality and the qualities that go with it?

Mediocre at best...
...just can't bring yourself to say something negative about his holiness, can you? When is this going to pass. The speech was boring and folks were seen leaving in the middle of it. Sorry, you missed the boat on this one and you had a chance to show your true colors (no pun intended).

speech was mediocre
sorry, but i have to be the lone voice in the wilderness to dare say THE HOLY ONE gave a real cluncker.

Surprising Interpretation by TS
It sounds like Mr. Sowell got a little intoxicated by the spectacle. It can happen to anyone, even a columnist as great as he.

I'm a libertarian and voted for McCain..
It was obvious that in this enviroment, in this year that a Democrat would most likely win the Presidential election.

Think about it. Of the Democratic canidates who else would you want to have been sworn in yesterday?

Hilary Clinton?, So she and her crook husband could even more blatantly sell our country out to the highest foreign or domestic bidder?
Joe Biden?, Who loves to hear himself talk and has no idea what he is saying and proves it everytime he opens his mouth?
Edwards? Richardson? Chris Dodd?
I am not very hopeful for our immediate future but given a choice between these yoyos I will take Barack Obama in a heartbeat.

RE:President Obama's speech
Who is John Galt?

Dr. Sowell
Please repeat after me; President Obama!

The inauguration was a dog and pony show
I'm not sure what all those people believe they are "suffering" fron that Obama is going to fix. A few busloads of teens and faculty from my school went, and the rest watched in our auditorium; all convinced Obama is going to "end tyranny" in America. It was just like watching a herd of excited goats chase a feed truck. They have no idea what "tyranny" is , and go as Hollywood thinks they should. I can't begin to imagine where all of this is going to go. Perhaps real tyranny will be in the cards at some point.

Ranger 29
You do need us. We pay the bills for your disasterous ideology. However, you are right- the vast amount of Americans want to follow. Follow, take from others, and avoid personal responsibility at all cost (to others).

Sophomoric Inauguration
Frankly, I think many of the people on TH could have written and delivered a better speech. I'm sorry but I don't think President Obama is charismatic--he doesn't have the wit and eloquence of Ronald Reagan or the charisma of Gov. Sarah Palin.

The speech itself was lackluster, hopelessly circling around looking for an overriding theme. President Obama, do not write your own speeches. Let the professionals do it.

As for the poem, omigod, that was another enormous thud to add an exclamation mark to a disjointed, off-key inauguration--white must affirm the right--that seemed to celebrate a black American's ascension to the highest office more than that of a political leader elected by both white and black Americans.

My prediction: Many Americans are going to regret their votes in this election.

What is memorable?
Obama's speech: Average, rehash of stump speeches, no memorable sound bytes.

Inaugural poem: DISMAL, Totally sophomoric (that's even a stretch) stupid and poorly delivered. A second grader could have written a more cogent piece.

Benediction: Memorable for its length and sound bytes. Also insulting to 'Whites' who apparently need to 'get it right'

Didn't watch the $170 million dollar coronation, but I listened to some of it on the radio...Glad today I don't have a TV.

A parody of She Loves Me Like a Rock Words & music by Paul Simon

When I was a little boy, (but don't you call me: boy)
I had some trouble with all my names (when I was just a boy)
I'd say now who do?
Who Do you think I'm fooling? (when I was just a boy)
I'll be a coronated boy (and won't it bring me joy)
Call me PEBO and on Tuesday 'Sire'
Oh, Obama loves, I love me
They'll get down on their knees and hug me
Like they love me for Iraq
They'll rock me though I mock the sages
They love me.
They love me, love me, love me, love me

Now that I'm grown to be a man (grown to be a man)
And now P-BO will be my name (grown to be a man)
I'll say now who do?
Who do you think I'm fooling? (grown to be a man)
I'm an idoliz'in man (grown to be a man)
I can snatch a little history
I'm Obama love me, please love me
Just get down on your knees and hug me
You'll love me cause I Rock!
I'll rock you like the 'Rock of Ages'
You'll love me
You'll love me, love me, love me, love me!

And now that I'm President (now the president)
No need for Congress to call my name (I'm the President!)
I'll Say now, who do?
Who do you think you're fooling? (who do you think you're fooling)
I've got the Presidential seal (I'm the President!)
I'm up on that Presidential Podium!
Obama loves me
You'll love me
You'll get down on your knees and hug me
You'll love me cause I ROCK!
I'll rock you like the 'Rock of Ages'
You'll love me

Fade Out:
You'll love me, love me, love me, love me
(You'll love me cause I rock!)

Dr. Sowell
No "man" ever stopped you. I am so sick of this lame excuse for laziness.

We have all hit our ceilings and it isn't easy for any of us. It hurts. There are fatty's and shorty's dummies and uglies in every facet of our society, poor folks, and daddies rich kids who get no credit for what they do. It all hurts.

Yes black people have had it hard, but haven't we all? Maybe without all the dreaming the black society would have pulled up its bootstraps, made sure its children went to school and got recognition for work rather that sob stories the "old way," by proving their worth.

I am sick and tired of whiney crybabies, period.

Good Show!
Good show, Mrs. Paddy! They should have hired you to draft his speech and deliver the poem. At least it would have been funny and clever!

Sowell
I would be happy right now if you were president. Here is some "hate" speech. I passionately hate socialism and what it has done to our country and fear it will soon be worse.

Yesterdays News
The almighty one didn't have the notion to practice his oath, no I CAN DO IT, so he stumbles in front of millions of world viewers, his first real speech was...flat, boring, just not what every one wanted or expected. that poem or interpretation of one was high schoolish, no national anthem ( I don't think I heard one) but people seen putting their hands over their hearts for other songs, who planned this. Lets face it , if Bush had half the support throughout hus tenure things may have been different.
Now I am waiting for SNL to do its thing. I saw plenty of things to laugh at. Why not have his two beautiful girls walking in front of him tossing roses before him and his wife adjusting a purple cape and golden crown as she walks sideways through the doors tring to folow her king. Coe on SNL we're waiting.

Who Stumbled on the Oath
Actually, the Chief Justice stumbled on the Oath. I think he was thrown off his rhythm by Obama's early start on his repetition of the first phrase: "I, Barack Hussein Obama..." as Justice Roberts was finishing with "do solemly swear." At this point, the CJ, not having brought the cheat sheet along, got out of synch. Obama tried his best to say it the way it is written, and not make Justice Roberts look bad. It probably ended up making each of the parties look foolish to their detractors. I didn't vote for Obama, and admire the Chief Justice greatly, but, for the record, Justice Roberts screwed this one up.

Did we hear the same speech?
It was the most rambling, boring disjointed speech I've ever heard fhim. Heard he wrote it himself, no help from Axelrod and yers this time! Even the crowd didn't react to it.

No End to Racism
The "race" issue will not go away. Racism is an invented crisis in this country and as such there will never be a solution or end to that which does not exist. Much in the same fashion as a person inventing the notion that he is a billionaire. No matter how much money he could presumably lose, he could simply pretend that he has more.

There's an unlimited aresenal of supposed racist activity. Maybe there's too few Black clowns in the circus, Barber Shops not hiring young African-Americans, or pizza delivery catering mostly to White neighborhoods. And all of those things and more that lie beneath the surface, will be of grave importance in the fight to end "Racism in America".

And give it just a little time for the Obama-mania to die-down and the race hustlers will soon be out accusing Whites of electing Obama in order to hide their true racist feelings and to try and get off the hook for centuries of racism and oppression towards Blacks. The fantasy of "racism" will continue on.

I repeat, who is he?

Barack Hussein Obama is President of the United States of America. Can anyone, of any political persuasion, point me to any website that verifies that Barack Hussein Obama is this person's real, current, legal name. If he was legally adopted by Lolo Soetoro, would his name not become Soetoro? Where is the record that he legally changed his name back to his natural (?) father's? I'll keep asking this until I'm satisfied. I hope this can be answered to our satisfaction. The American electorate, in its infinite wisdom, has elected as President a man whose name we don't know for sure.

Schickelgruber became Hitler. Djugashvili became Stalin. I know it's a bit late to ask this indelicate question, but shouldn't the truth out?

TIA

Just a Thought!
Would MLK have voted for Obama? And if so, would it have been because of the color of his skin or his character?

Some observations...
I was wondering, in these difficult times, how so many people were able to afford a trip to Washington, especially so many minorities. My husband and I ( we are in our 70's)just mailed in our quarterly estimated income tax---no trip for us! I don't think Mr. Obama's speech was very exhilarating. Maybe we have gotten use to his delivery or our expectations were quite high. When Mr Lowery called for "white to get it right", I thought yesterday's swearing in of a bi-racial President was an example of getting it right. I would hope that the conservatives and libertarians would join forces to form a formidable opposition to the liberals. I don't believe the Republicans have it in them to mount any opposition to anything. Whatever the case, let us pray for our new President.

Bitter, party of 46 and counting
The bitterness at townhall is palpable.

Two words: Boo Hoo.

Face it. You conservatives messed things up. You had a chance to prove that you guys could run the country. You blew it. Unrestrained capitalism doesn't work. Aggressive use of military force is not working. Hyper-partisanship doesn't work. Tax cuts for the wealthy does not make everyone more prosperous.

Bitter, party of 46 and counting
Well, we're about to see if your analysis is valid. If memory serves me correctly Stalin, hitler, and Mao used your same logic about capitalism.

Enacting a national health care system, and raising the top marginal tax rate by 4%, while lowering taxes for 95% of Americans makes one Stalin, Hitler or Mao?

How do you figure?

Or are you suggesting that Obama has some secret agenda that he isn't telling anyone about? Are you really that paranoid and delusional?

Love-fest
I fear this liberal love-fest is going to go on for quite some time in the media. I don’t see them ever going negative with Obama for fear of seeing themselves as racist if they do.
The only way the media will turn on this guy is if he says of does anything that can be construed as conservative or acting white.

Hate is a full time "Job". When I was 25, I earned $500.00 per hour with a 5 hour guarantee. Today, I am 36? Henry Kravitz made $1,000,000.00 per hour, when he purchased R.J. Reynolds. That's my goal, not "Hate",which pays nothing.

Sadly
Obviously, Phylo is an idiot! Phylo go find a liberal blog where they will believe your drivel.

The speech that was not
It was promised to be so inspirational it would be preserved for eternity. Inform all liberals even though the speech was aweful it will be forever apart of American history along with every other acceptance speech ever given including Presidents Truman, Nixon, Carter, Clinton and Bush. As a speech it was empty without substance just as the Obama administration first day.

killer: You what? At 25, you earned

$500.00 per hour with a 5 hour guarantee????

Illegally, no doubt!

But, WHAT IS YOUR POINT?

killer
According to you, your time is worth big bucks. I have to wonder if it is the truth, how is it you have so much time on your hands? It is 10:25 and you have type time.

I could also say that my time is worth $500 per hour with a five hour minimum. You seem to be lacking a few customers at the present time. You could charge less and actually work druing the day.

Confusing?
For me to say I make $5.00 per hour would be a lie at this stage of my life. I take care of my mother on a very modest budget.

I hope I didn't imply anything in the last post.

Racism and the Left

While you might think that the election of Obama might finally silence those who love to portray the U.S. as a terribly racist nation, I suspect otherwise. That’s because the notion that we’re such a racist society (despite all of the evidence to the contrary) works to the benefit of the Left. As long as they can fuel minority anger against whites and make liberal ‘do-gooders’ believe they have a cause, they will continue to do so. It matters not to them what damage is done to this nation. Their power is all that matters.

Our Master's Voice
I came to the conclusion about two years ago that Obama is just in love with the sound of his own voice. I've listened to several of his "blockbuster speeches", and after the fact thought, yeah, nice delivery, but what the hell did he just say? In my line of work I do a lot of public speaking, and the standing line is;

"If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls**t!"

I think Obama has mastered the latter technique. Problem with this though is that sooner or later people are going to realize all they've heard is more verbal diarrhea.

I think Dr. Sowell's point though was that Obama said what people wanted to hear, and delivered it well, not that there was any objective way to measure the true substance yet.

"speech was mediocre
sorry, but i have to be the lone voice in the wilderness to dare say THE HOLY ONE gave a real cluncker."

No you are not the lone voice in the wilderness. The speech was mediocre at best and the inauguration festivities lacked any class. I was disappointed but watched anyway. I am tired of hearing what a great orator Obama is because the media says so, well I guess compared to other Dems he is. HC sounds like nails on a chalk board.

The world falls for this garbage because education wise we are going backwards.

Stalin or Mao? Not quite...

“Enacting a national health care system, and raising the top marginal tax rate by 4%, while lowering taxes for 95% of Americans makes one Stalin, Hitler or Mao?”

Comparisons to Stalin, et al, are over the top, but forcing one person to labor to pay for the health care of another person is socialism, pure and simple. And since only 50% of Americans currently pay taxes.
lowering taxes for 95% of Americans means that some people will receive money that they didn’t earn, money that was forcibly taken from the people who did earn it. That’s also socialism. The Left won’t call it that, because they know there are still enough Americans around who understand that term all too well. But couched in the guise of “free” health care and “free” money from other tax payers, it sounds good to some people regardless of how wrong it is.

Obombo, the ventriloquist's dummy
Saul Alinsky, the immensely influential far-left ideologue who invented the role of grass-roots ‘community organiser’ that Obama filled for so many years, laid out in his book Rules for Radicals that the revolution could only be brought about by stealth politics.

This is what he wrote: ‘This is the job for today’s radical - to fan the embers of hopelessness into a flame to fight. To say, ‘You cannot turn away - look at it - let us change it together!’ ‘Look at us. We are your children. Let us not abandon each other for then we are all lost. Together we can change it for what we want...it is a job first of bringing hope and doing what every organiser must do with all people, all classes, places and times - communicate the means or tactics whereby the people can feel that they have the power to do this and that and on..."

Day of Darkness
I didn't watch the schmoozer's inauguration and don't intend to look at any of the clips. I marked January 20th down as a date that will always be a dark day in the history of America because this guy's a menace to our safety. He has already forbidden trials at Gitmo even though a group of the detainee's have admitted their part in 9/11.

I hope that the salivating and unctuous liberals will remember that when the sh!! hits the fan.

Every "Penny" Henry Kravitz made was "Legal"? Only a "Fool" breaks the law for money...

I felt the same way. I just hope that if we are hit with another terrorist attack it is in an area that voted for it. I don't want anyone to suffer such a thing, but it would be a travesty if they hit Tulsa rather than NYC or Omaha rather than Berkeley.

Political Speeches
I was offended because he talks about change, but yet more was spent on his swearing in and all the balls, parades, and other events than anybody that came before him. I think of all that money that could have been put to better use. CHANGE? Only when it doesn't make any of the higher ups sacrifice. Anyone can read from a paper! It takes much more to put those ideas from paper to reality. I think he is unrealistic to think all of his plans will work and we as Americans will be the losers.

Henry @ 3:12 -
thanks for that post -- that made my day. I feel a little better after the horrendous corner our country turned yesterday...

Lowry's speech
Was anyone else troubled by the laugh line in Lowry's benediction?

"when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right."

So black, brown, yellow and red are referred to in a way that implies we are still living in the 60's and whites, it is implied, have not embraced what's right.

This is more race baiting.

Interesting crowds--
Every time we watch an inauguration or a large campaign political speech it is interesting and sometimes pathetic to see all the sheep and lemmings hanging on every word of the politician. As we conservatives know, many political types can signify, but how many can actually qualify to be completely honest and for the good of the arena of people they represent??? Noticing that during the campaigns of the two candidates, they always pander to different ethnic groups, religious groups and sometimes foreign groups. Why not just pander and tell the truth to all legal Americans regardless of special interest groups!!!

'limb from limb'
You said that, Dr Sowell. Had a white guy made such a comment... well, the Leonard Pitts-type racist-editorialists out there would have had a field day. I only mention him because today, in his usual lackey/racist style, he is re-appraising Abraham Lincoln as somewhat a good guy. Gee! I wonder what's that all about?
Such is the case with with tribal politics, and why the whole Obama sensation marks exactly nothing, certainly not a new era in race relations.
'Limb from limb' -- shades of Rodney King, OJ Simpson, et al. What's to celebrate?

Sean
I got it.
I am white.
And I only embrace what is wrong and evil.
Did I miss anything.

More to Celebrate Than Just Obama
I did not vote for Obama. Yesterday, my children asked how I could watch the inauguration and be happy for our country. I said, "It is because this is about more than Obama." First, no matter who is inaugurated, we celebrate the fact that for 220+ years including a civil war we have handed power over in a peaceful way. Few nations can declare such. Second, like Dr. Sowell stated there is something to be said for the US electing a person of color. This speaks to the very core of our constitution that "all men are created equal." During the primaries we had people of varied faiths, skin color, and gender running for president. Even if I wasn't thrilled with their ideologies, I could see the reality of our constitution at work. Let us be proud of that reality and move forward. Finally, whether one likes Obama or not he is our president. Does this concern me? Greatly. What to do? Celebrate what is worth celebrating and pray that circumstances will allow Obama to do as little damage as possible while in office. Despite the MSM idol worship of Obama, God is still greater and in control.

Dance to the rhetoric
“No doubt the race-hustling industry will continue, and no doubt their chief victims will be blacks, especially young blacks, who buy the paralyzing picture of victimhood and the counterproductive resentments which sap energies that could be better used to improve their own lives.”

Yes and Obama – considered great orator though I don’t know why – said something else in his speech about claiming an end to small politics and divisiveness. Another man eight years ago claimed to end it too.

“What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply.”

But those are the same "stale" politics and arguments he used to run on and win. So what have we learned? The theme is now that I’ve been elected, its time to stop the petty politics. (DC’s tool of choice – and they know how to use it.) And it was time to stop them every time he was challenged along the way – while he was fully engaged in them.

Dr Sowell
obama is a trained lawyer, trained to give speeches, millions of people can give a speech.
The value, like in Ronald Regan, was in the content of the character of the man and the beliefs of the man, for the betterment of all. obama is over his pay scale, his nice guy fascade does not match his voting record, his agendas or how he gains power, and his associates have terrible track recordsas well. Did hitler give moving speeches ??
When you tell the MOB what they want to hear and promise them all they want, sadly, regardless of the consequences, the envious, perverted, dilusional, low end of the human race, loves it.
The honor of being the first American black president should of gone to Alan Keyes, Lynn Swan, JC Watts, Michael Steele, those are TRUE Americans first and black just happens to be their skin pigmentation.

This administration is a congregation of leftists radicals who hate America, will cheat and steal the treasury blind, will make US vulnereable to foreign attacks, will demise our sovereignty, will push experimental social agendas, will push to impose more government intrusion into our private lives and will decay, if not destroy, the values that have made US great. All with lies and manipulation.

God help US!

obama's guest, low-ery, let US all know that it will be business as usual ! Pound the white man and suck more out of him !

Transfer of power
And this last transfer of power was much more civil than the last one--because a decent man served as President for the last eight years.

Amen,
Proud. 'Nuff said already.

I guess it's just over my head...
...but I simply cannot see where Obama is a great speaker. He is quite boring to me and my ears hurt from that annoying cadence that he has:

"My. name. is. Obama. and. I. speak-like-this. Every. time. you. hear. me. I-will-sound-the-same. I. can. not. say. anything. without. sounding-like-this.

And when did it become fashionable for people to be considered good speakers when they have absolutely nothing to say?

I just don't get it.

from a conservative writer
So long as we think Barack Obama won because of a fluke—because he waltzed into an economic crisis, or because his supporters somehow mastered better election technology, or because he somehow bamboozled the American public with vague, endearing promises of change, or because the media worshipped him—so long as we think those things, so long will our troubles continue. Barack Obama won because a majority of Americans believed he was an intelligent, levelheaded and responsible person who could solve problems they cared about. If we're to beat him—or succeed him—we're going to have to convince them that we can do the same or better.

______

These are the "beliefs" of the man that you say sought "betterment of all":

http://www.ontheissues.org/Celeb/Ronald_Reagan

"The president was so cut off from the counsel of black Americans that he sometimes did not even realize when he was offending them. One example occurred when Reagan sided with Bob Jones University in a lawsuit to obtain federal tax exemptions that had been denied by the IRS. The IRS denied tax exemptions to segregated private schools. Many of them were schools such as Bob Jones University, which enrolled a handful of minority students but prohibited interracial dating and marriage.

Reagan would later say that the case had never been presented to him as a civil rights issue. More astonishingly, he did not even know that many Christian schools practiced segregation."

"Reagan never supported the use of federal power to provide blacks with civil rights. He opposed the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. Reagan said in 1980 that the Voting Rights Act had been “humiliating to the South.”

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=195370 0&columnId=1929301
"After he defeated President Carter, a native Southerner, Reagan led an administration that seemed to cater to Southerners still angry over the passage of the Civil Rights Act after 16 years. The Reagan team condemned busing for school integration, opposed affirmative action and even threatened to veto a proposed extension of the Voting Rights Act (the sequel to the 1964 Civil Rights Act passed a year later and focused on election participation).

Betterment of all??? Not hardly.

Having it both ways?
My honey complained the other day that the press insisted that race would never be a part of Obama's campaign as it was improper. However, once he won the election all we continue to hear about in the press is his race! I frankly don't give a damn what color he is and I'm sick of hearing about it.

Just think how sick you'll be of Obama four years from now.
..............................................

Now, let's hope one of the TOWNHALL liberal loons posts about me and racism or some such garbage.

That way I can ask them if they really think conservatives will join the "Boot Licking Obama Club". A club formed and perpetuated by the liberal, mainstream media.

I can ask them if they really think that I or other conservatives will forget the vile abuse heaped upon President Bush for the last seven years.

I can ask them if they really think that I or other conservatives will forget the sickening abuse which Sarah Palin endured this past year.

And that's just for starters.

Younger in UT @13:53 EST.
Amen to that! And the White House silverware will still be there to boot!

Don't think 'Bama great, but do wish him well, as caring conservatives, we ought do no less. And by all means, call him to task when he errs, as we ought do no less.

Put 10 paintings on the wall
Nine of the paintings come from Wal-Mart, Flea-Markets and similar places. The other is priceless and is unsigned by a world famous artists.

March one hundred average people past those 10 paintings on the wall and they wouldn't be able to distinguish the priceless one from any of the rest.

Next, remove all the paintings from the wall except the priceless one. Tell everyone who enters the room that the painting they're about to see, is a priceless piece of art by a world famous artist.

Everyone standing around the painting will be looking at it in awe, remarking about how incredibly beautiful it is.

That was the case with Obama IMO. He was billed as a brilliant man who is an incredibly charasmatic speaker. Most folks had heard this opinion of him by the Media long before they had seen or heard him. So naturally, most folks saw him as a brilliant and charasmatic man...just as they had been told he was.

TC

Who knows for sure how one will feel about Obama four years from now but I certainly hope and pray that he is successful for the good of the country.

On the other hand, the legacy of George W is already in the books and he has been thoroughly trashed for good reasons.

Cons are already gearing up for strong opposition to whatever Obama proposes. I was told today that Limbaugh is already on record for saying that he hopes Obama's presidency is a failure. If this is true, I'm sure his thinking is representative of many in the conservative ranks.

In the history of the country, has there ever been so much collective hate aimed at a new president during the inauguration week? I wonder why that is so or is the reason obviously apparent?

Obama won 52% of the votes
I would like to correct this statement. President Obama got 52% of the vote. Getting & winning are two significantly different things! You say, how? Winning means your get the votes because people think you are the right person. However, when people vote because of bias, lack of knowledge, etc. you "get" their votes not "win" them! I wonder how much of the vote on both sides was because of biases – let’s say racial? You can win because you got the most votes, but not necessarily because you won all of these votes!

Lionheart
"In the history of the country, has there ever been so much collective hate aimed at a new president during the inauguration week?"

Let's see...how about the most recent president? Of course, that came from the left and was directed at a white guy so it doesn't count. The hatred of Bush started day one ("stole the election" etc.) and subsided briefly after 9/11, only to return in force when he actually started to do something.

You're either disingenuous or willfully blind; neither is a flattering quality.

Phylo
Please explain to me how Obama is going to cut taxes for 95% of American workers when fewer than 60% of American workers pay taxes?

christianlib
What you quoted is correct, but in fact, Obama does need to prove himself as every president does. Further, he should be given a normal grace period to begin with, usually about 3 months. Of my own accord I will give him a chance because it is the right thing to do.

That said, what I really get a bit offended by is liberals saying "give the guy a chance". The same liberals who have disingenuously smeared the last president for eight years less about 13 days. You see, Bush got about a 13 day grace period. That is, of course if you discount the "selected not elected" crowd.

For all the mistakes I honestly believe Bush made in office, his treatment was deplorable. And now conservatives are supposed to forget that and treat your choice with decency. We will, you didn't when that opportunity was yours.

It is patriotic to be a decenting opinion, it is not patriotic to smear the president.

Some smears:

Bush lied, people died
No blood for oil
Bush stole the election
etc etc.

At least there is someone
on the right who is honest. But then again, Sowell voted for Obama.

It's a hair-splitter
but it must add:
Should we, as a nation, choose a woman for president or pass same sex laws-or anything, really-we will not all of a sudden BECOME a great country. This IS a great country---and progress is a result of great countries. Barack is yet another not-so-surprising result. HE even stated, a few times, that, "it's not about me", I was in full agreement. Now if there are Americans that needed Barack specifically, in order to think this country is great, well...welcome to the party! But remember yesterday that Barack started with Washington and ended with Wasgington---namely the beginning of this republic. Respect this great country--warts and all!!!!

Nice Try, LionHeart.

But I'm not buying.

Just wondering. Did you hope and pray President Bush was successful for the good of the country? Were you one of the Bush Haters? Do you know they're now screaming about an "investigation" or some nonsense. They won't, or can not, let go of the hate.

You know what I think? I think the far left will still screw things up for themselves. And Obama, too! They won but they're still mad.

What a sad bunch.

I only care if you are Qualified!
Never look at anyone repesenting a race or culture, only a human person representing certian ideology and if is qualified for the position.
Mr. Obama is a socialist by nature, and that is where this country is headed.

To Terry in GA

Terry: “I simply cannot see where Obama is a great speaker.”

I don’t get it either, Terry. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s an emperor-has-no-clothes thing. No one in the public eye wants to be the first to admit that there’s no real substance to Obama’s rhetoric. Probably they’re afraid of being labeled as a racist by the Left.

hail to the chief
I still have to wonder why none of his school records have been off limits. I mean every school he attended has refused to release his records. Why?

The speech
Nope. No comparison to Reagan's speech. Obama's was mediocre and patronizing while Reagan's encouraged the people of the U.S., in the way a supportive parent would, to do and think for themselves---Obama's only chastised the citizens to stop being naughty because he has judged us all as so. Dr. Sowell, if this is your idea of the best since Reagan then we heard different speeches.

TC

_____

I am aware of calls to probe Bush's presidency and I completely agree with Obama that such an action is unnecessary. What's done is done and I am not aware of Bush breaking any laws during his administration.

For your information, I was 100 percent behind Bush in his initial handling of the 9/11 attacks including the deployment of troops to Afghanistan.

He lost my confidence with his decision to forgo Afghanistan to attack Iraq, his (non)handling of Katrina, his approval of companies outsourcing American jobs to foreign lands, the tax cuts to the rich, the Haliburton contracts that were not preceded by a legitimate procurement process, and much more that exceed the limit on this blog. Even at that, I hold no hatred for him but I do despise what his administration has been responsible for.

The difference is that Bush's deeds are what caused public backlash while Obama has not been in office a week and conservatives are already openly stating that they hope he fails. Oh yes, there is a big difference between the two and why Obama is being trashed saliently (and it has nothing to do with his administration..he was just sworn in).

Speeches and actions
Saint Obambi, Hitlery, and McCain Feingold have all demonstrated that they will not honor their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution. None of them deserved a chance so far as I am concerned, regardless of whether or not the biased media says they are good speakers.

Obamanism
Frankly, I am so sick of both the name and sight of them that I could not bring myself to watch any part of the inauguration, and will not ever consider him President no matter how many years he "reigns" as long as he does not prove to the American people that he is eligible to be POTUS

Save one

I have been confused by Dr Lowery's comment yesterday..In 1961 a good friend and co-worker who was, his words, a *light skinned Negro* and I were in the 'Crypto Vault' bsing when he recited that *Poem*-- "If Ur White Ur right, If Ur Yellow ur Mellow, if Ur Brown Stick around, if Ur Black get back..
I had never heard that before or since, but I thought he was describing the *Pecking Order* in his Cleveland 'Hood. Race was not an issue with us so I chuckled and went on.. Dumb??

Where'd you get those figures?
CW: "...And since only 50% of Americans currently pay taxes. lowering taxes for 95% of Americans means that some people will receive money that they didn’t earn, money that was forcibly taken from the people who did earn it."

Doug: "Phylo Please explain to me how Obama is going to cut taxes for 95% of American workers when fewer than 60% of American workers pay taxes?"

If less than 50-60% of Americans are working at above poverty incomes, then this country is in an even worse mess than we all thought.

Perhaps you did not recognize the old song that was quoted in the benediction. It has been sung by many African-American blues artists, but the one I remember best singing it was Big Bill Broonzy. The words went "If you're white, you're all right/ If you're yellow, you're mellow/ If you're brown, stick around/ But if you're black, Brother, get back get back get back." The song is so famous that is lines have been quoted many, many times in the African-American community and would have been instantly recognized by black Americans, especially older folks.

Dear Lilly
I think you're the same Lilly, but I'm not sure. You used to post often. Sad to say, some spoke to you shamefully. I also think someone said you'd had some health issues. I hope you're better, and I hope I'm speaking to the right Lilly.

Subtle Point
Making a speech--he gave a speech--in my speech on (some subject or date), I said--all those type statements are very impersonal and detached for me. To "give a speech" implies a "canned", committee, or focus group written piece of paper trash that carries deniability and no attribution. I cannot imagine quoting a speech (I read on a teleprompter) to tell someone how I view a subject--I would just restate my personal belief on the issue. To reference a speech is to refer to your own words as a footnote. Too distant to impress or touch me. Our Leaders should just talk to us in every day parlance, be human, use their own words and shunt aside the committee written tripe they read but never remember.

Politics
National politics is like the flowing water in a river, you can put your hand in it from time to time and become "involved" but no one individual can change the direction of the flow. Obama may have big dreams but his dreams must match the flow or he will wash ashore and be devoured by the uninvolved and disenchanted that wait there for just such a happenstance. We have far more "devourers" than we have political zealots. Rinsing ones hands in the river of political thought can be as dangerous for a new President as for a Wildebeest crossing a crocodile infested river in Africa. Never forget, "People resist change".

Reagan's speech stunk too
I never stop wondering what it is otherwise intelligent people find in the random babbling of people like Obama and Reagan. Reagan's speech was simplistic and repetitive. and repetitive. and he repeated himself. Over and over. It's best to remember rather than to listen to such highlights of history. Like the girl on the other side of the room in 7th grade English -- could you see her now -- not at her current age, but as she looked then -- you would realize what you were experiencing was high hormone levels, not beauty. As far as Reagan goes, most of todays pundits were entering their prime -- they were 25 - 35 years old and are remembering the first flush of power, the important positions they held, rather than any objective memory of a jingoist actor playing a part. Look at who he put on the court. Look at the 25 million Mexicans he gave instant and total amnesty. Look at his moronic entry and exit in Lebanon that convinced the Arab world we were toothless tigers who would run at the first sign of serious casualties. Then tell me what was so great about Ronnie. Nuh thing with a capital Nuh. Similarly, people will brains will wonder about what was so wonderful about Obamaland. His empty platitudes should be inscribed on a lump of styrofoam and burned.

President Obama now has that bully pulpit and has shown that he has the rhetorical skills to use it, whether for good or ill. The unprecedented throngs that filled the vast reaches of the Washington Mall and lined the parade route from the capitol to the White House shows that he has the people behind him as he assumes office obama u are great person
