Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Whatever history's verdict on the Bush administration might be, it is likely to be very different from what we hear from the talking heads on television or read from the know-it-alls on editorial pages.

President Bush's number one achievement was also the number one function of government-- to protect its citizens. Nobody on September 11, 2001 believed that there would never be another such attack for more than seven years.

Unfortunately, people who are protected from dangers often conclude that there are no dangers. This is most painfully visible among those Americans who are hysterical over the government's intercepting international phone calls, in order to disrupt international terrorist networks.

Many, especially among the intelligentsia, are also obsessed with whether we are being nice enough to the cut-throats locked up at Guantanamo, some of whom have already been turned loose to resume a life of terrorism. The rights of the Geneva Convention do not apply to people who neither obey the Geneva Convention nor are covered by the Geneva Convention.

That a President of the United States protected us from deadly enemies may not seem like much of an accomplishment to some. But it may be more fully appreciated when we get a President who eases up on that protection, in order to curry favor at home and abroad.

We can only hope that it will not take the sight of an American city lying in radioactive ruins to wake people up to the dangers that George W. Bush protected us against, despite an unending chorus of carping.

No one in his right mind would say that the Bush administration was flawless. But many of their worst political mistakes were the kinds of mistakes that decent people often make when dealing with indecent people, both domestically and internationally.

The idea with which President Bush arrived in Washington, that he could gain bipartisan support by going along with the Democrats, and not vetoing any bills that Congress passed, ignored the fact that it takes two to tango.

Having proclaimed his goal as bipartisanship, it was he who was blamed when the bipartisanship failed to materialize. Wooing Ted Kennedy and going along with massive government spending did not stop Kennedy from getting up in the Senate and loudly proclaiming that Bush "lied, and lied and lied!" about Iraq.

Whatever the merits or demerits of going to war against Saddam Hussein, the question whether he had weapons of mass destruction immediately at hand makes a better talking point than a serious argument.

President Bush was not the only national leader who thought Saddam Hussein had such weapons, nor were such weapons the only reason why the Iraqi dictator posed a continuing danger that all diplomatic efforts, over more than a decade, had failed to extinguish.

This issue can be debated, and no doubt will be debated for years, if not generations, to come. But the irresponsible charge that "Bush lied" for some nefarious purpose-- to trade "blood for oil" or to generate business for Halliburton, for example-- is more than a slander against him. It undermines our whole nation and gives comfort to our enemies around the world.

Domestically, the Bush legacy leaves a lot to be desired. Going along with the McCain-Feingold bill restricting free speech was perhaps the Bush administration's biggest dereliction of duty. Maybe they figured that they could pass the problem along to the Supreme Court to stop it, since this bill so clearly violated the First Amendment to the Constitution.

But the Supreme Court was also guilty of a dereliction of its duty and let the McCain-Feingold bill stand.

Advocating amnesty for illegal aliens was another political disaster, especially when accompanied by denials of the obvious.

Although the Bush administration went along with the chorus of calls for promoting home ownership among people who could not afford home ownership, President Bush at least sounded a warning while others were still pushing lenders to lend to people who proved unable to repay their loans.

A mixed bag? Aren't we all? But an honorable man.

Disappointed...
Mr. Bush did right on security (Iraq) but was a huge disappoint on the border issue. The worse thing he did that will affect America is that he greased the road for Socialism, jumping on the bailout and goverment spending like a drunk Democrat.

Obama will have it easy now, implementing full blown Socialism thanks to W's headstart.

Brent Riggs

i agree
that bush was an honorable man who did his best to protect our nation. it is curious, however, how mr. sowell can say that those who claim bush's motives were nefarious undermine all of us. yet mr. sowell has not missed an opportunity to make the outrageous comparison between obama and adolph hitler. Mr. sowell, you make such claims at the expense of your own reputation.
history will be the final judge of president bush's legacy. i believe he will be vindicated on some issues, and not judged so well on others. mr. sowell and his bilious pundit brethren, liberal and conservative, i fear, will not be judged so kindly.

Dems are still stuck in campaign mode ..
Consider this:

* without the waterboarding of KSM, our intelligence personnel would not have found out about the Brooklyn Bridge plot

* without warrantless wiretapping, we would not have been able to capture the terrorists who were plotting the Brooklyn Bridge attack

While it is fun to strike an anti-torture, anti-wiretapping pose during campaigns, there is a reality that RESPONSIBLE people face while governing.

Although I didn't vote for him, I hope that President Obama has understood this after receiving post-election briefings. Most Dems are stuck in pre-election mode. If their ACLU inspired rants are given any importance, it will have the effect of weakening President Obama's efforts to govern effectively and keep America safe.

So, Dems, please stop with the anti-Bush rhetoric - we get that you've used it to get your guy elected. But now, you are playing politics when there are real lives at stake. Your political rhetoric helps our enemies.

If you don't believe this, just contemplate what might have happened if we had been too squeamish to torture KSM and perform warrantless surveillance on the ringleaders of the Brooklyn Bridge plot.

Honorable Man, Tough Times
President Bush always put our country first, liberals have a problem with that. He never governed by polls, thank God, and always had American's best interest over and above his poll numbers. Pundits like to talk about his low approval rating - ha! The do-nothing Congress has lower numbers. He is absolutely an honorable and gracious man. God bless you, President Bush and God help us and help Nobama.

manfredo
Has Sowell compared Obama to Hitler...I think not; rather, he's compared the fervor afforded Mr. Obama to that afforded Hitler. We cannot yet compare the two men as Obama hasn't yet had a chance to advance his agenda.

Voice of (Short Term) Reason
I found this interesting: "But now, you are playing politics when there are real lives at stake."

I have news for ya Bub, there were ALWAYS real lives at stake. But those lives at stake didn't stop conservatives from doing everything they could to destroy a sitting President, including an impeachment based on a triviality and motivated by rank partisanship.

There is plenty of responsibility for 9-11, but those who focused the attention of the nation adn the President on impeachment deserve thier share.

aj
so you're still holding out judgement? obama may prove dr. sowell correct and turn out to be america's hitler? it seems about half of dr. sowell's columns in recent months have had some form of comparison between obama and hitler. as victor davis hanson wrote many years ago of liberals who were howling about bush and hitler, the hitler comparison merely serves to undermine the credibility of the one making the comparison.
surely dr. sowell is able to write apt criticisms of liberal politics without making such outrageous and irresponsible comparisons. sometimes, though, i feel he is just giving some of his readers what they want. oh well.

More poison, please
Watching this bailout frenzy, I'm reminded of the saying "When the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem begins to resemble a nail".

In the Leftist zero-sum view of economics, there is no such thing as the CREATION of wealth. Leftists believe that wealth is static, and only re-distribution can help the less affluent.

The fact, is that Govt spending drains capital (both current and future) from otherwise productive ventures that grow wealth, and create jobs. When President Obama 'goes big' on Govt spending, he is putting us on a road to even greater ruin.

Unfortunately, Republicans have given excellent cover to Leftist economists and politicians. No longer will anyone be able to say that there is a credible movement that offers a political alternative to big Govt. The Republicans went for Socialism-lite, paving the way for their 'betters' who really know how to do Socialism 'right'! And, with cheerleaders (and perhaps active participants) such as the Dems in Congress, we are about to see the full-blown version unfold.

The reality is that in big Govt America, both Republicans and Democrats have the same tool, the HAMMER of big Govt spending. So, every crisis, whether in the banking sector, or real-estate, is approached with the same tool. The Democrats are open about it, since they never signed onto Capitalism - so, they can be unabashed with their eagerness to deploy the hammer. In fact, they are visibly gloating in the supposed 'failures' of Capitalism.

As if the CRA, Fannie, Freddie and the Federal Reserve are creations of Capitalism!

The poisoned American economy is being offered more poison - as a cure.

John, in PA
Don't you think that the 'sitting president' in question should've stepped down?

After all, he was proven to be
(1) an adulterer and
(2) a perjurer

John
It's obvious from your post that you either were sleeping over the past twelve years or really aren't all that interested in facts, much less the nation's welfare and security.

Your president committed and suborned perjury for the sole purpose of avoiding embarassment, and attempeted to use the Secret Service as a personal praetorian guard in defiance of the Constitution. The Senate was derelict in its duty to remove him because he blatantly violated the right of the plaintiff against him to a fair trial.

The fact is that the only priority your president had was to aggrandize his own image...to the point where Sandy Burger stuffed documents down his pants in order to avoid any scrutiny following 9-11.

May GOD Bless President Bush
My prayers and grateful thanks go with President Bush and his family. He has been a Patriot and maybe our last real CHRISTIAN world leader. May GOD be with us all now...
In CHRIST,

JOHN 3:16

It is the economy
Bush is honorable, but wrecking the economy is to many people an unforgiveable sin. Yes, both parties were responsible, but Bush was the CEO.
I regret helping to hire him.

Look for 10 cities Nuked during Obama.
Iran probably assumes that our retaliation for them nuking 10 cities isn't much worse than for 1, so I expect them to wait and nuke us with 10 or so, which is about what they could currently make in 8 years.

Expect the attach to come from missiles launched from freighters in the middle of the night. To have maximum launch preparation time, expect it to come in the Winter near the Equinox.

God Bless You President Bush
George Bush kept this country safe during his presidency. He made it priority number one. With all the enemies from within this country and in government, he performed his job admirably. The economy was second to security and even that could have been saved if he would have had the support on capital hill early in his presidency. Just like in the movie "braveheart" he asks his troops..."What will you do without freedom?" I think we should ask ourselves that question for the future.

The SUPREME Irony!!!
The single greatest shot over Obama's Titanic is that the NRA and American Gun-Sellers named BHO as "SALESMAN OF THE YEAR."

"It’s credit where credit is due,” says Shepherd, “Mr. Obama has consistently voted against individual rights to firearms, appointed a re-tread Clinton administration full of gun banners, and made it plain to anti-gun groups that despite what he might say to the contrary, he’s on their side.” That history, along with the unquestioned support of anti-gun organizations, Shepherd says, has spooked consumers into a buying frenzy for firearms that could be outlawed in another Assault Weapons Ban…
Sales are so good that on Tuesday, January 6, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) issued a notice to all federal firearms licensees that “an unprecedented increase in demand for ATF Form 4473” had run supplies low enough that dealers were temporarily given permission to photocopy the form until supplies caught up with demand…
In fact, Shepherd says, gun and ammunition sales are at such frantic levels that they have surpassed the panic-buying of Y2K or anything during the Clinton years when the first Assault Weapons Ban was passed.

And, only earlier this week, I thought that the greatest irony was that the food police wanted a "Carbon Tax" to combat global warming/climate change/global cooling imposed on Fat Al Gore.

Pin the Tag on GWB

Why is it that those clearly suffering from BDS want to blame Bush for EVERYTHING?

MINUTES after the Miracle on The Hudson yesterday, there were phone calls made into NYC-area radio stations that claimed BUSH CAUSED THE PLANE CRASH!

Evidently, the flock of geese did not get Obama's "Let's All Get Along" Rodney King Memo.

Bush Legacy
The country is losing 1/2 million jobs a months.

Obamush
Both Presidents have signaled an end to unproductive and harming political fighting. This was Bush's best moment, other than hiring Petreaus,..

"Five days from now, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you, the American people. Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose history reflects the enduring promise of our land.

This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President-elect Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their two beautiful girls."

I will miss President Bush
He is a fine man who has served his country honorably and well.

Bush Has Class
The past 16 years have been interesting.

Republicans relentlessly criticized Bill Clinton--very nasty.

In turn, the Dems never gave Bush a chance-very nasty.

I did not vote for Obama BUT I TRULY HOPE HE WILL BE A UNIFYING FIGURE. I HOPE HE WILL END THE ENDLESS CYCLE OF RECRIMINATION BY BOTH PARTIES.

We need to start treating each other with courtesy even when we disagree.

Bush Legacy
Excellent article Mr. Solwell. Thank you for putting into words what many of us think.

Dems should treat Terrorists like Repubs
One of the ironies that amazes me is that Democrats play Dirty Hardball against Republicans while routinely Kissing the Butts of Dictators from Stalin to Castro to Ahmadinejad.

If we could ever get Democrats to treat Dictators like Republicans, our country would be safe.

What the hell was Bush doing
before 9/11? Nothing! He ignored all the warnings and it happened on his watch. And oops! no WMD in Iraq but lets spread the blame and what liberal democrat told Bush how to conduct a now 6 year war with 4200 dead?He leaves an economy on his watch again in ruins.Even McCain and Palin had to trash Bush during the election to have a chance to win.And with his torture policy he made us on the same level as our enemies.Thank God he is gone for good.

John in PA
Are you from Scranton too? You libs love to go back. How about this:

Had The disbarred, woman raping, pervert that used his misguided young intern as an ashtray stepped aside and spared his party the embarrassment, maybe that gasbag Gore would have won his home state during reelection and changed the course of history?

Maybe that would have spared us conservatives from being sold down the river by a decent and misguided GWB that can't even free Ramos and Campean after poking us in the eyes for 4 straight years and making a Marxist rookie a ruler.

30 Years wasted ...
It took 30 years from Reagan to "W" for the Republicans to gain complete control of 3 of the 4 branches of the Federal Government...

And what do we have to show for it?

I voted for Bush twice, with hopes of ending abortion, revamping social security, defending marriage, and lower taxes ...

And what did we get?

Bigger government, war, the end of the Republican Party, sky-rocketing illegal immigration, nationalization of the banking industry, ... oh, and yes lower taxes ...

I cannot get sentimental about the Bush legacy because I have to be concerned about the Obama legacy to come...

I think people make the error of believing that the mess our country is in now was due to the War in Iraq, or 9-11-2001, or Bush "mistakes".

I believe We are in the mess we are in now by DESIGN not by mistake... NOBODY ... no matter how incompetent could have created this big a mess UNLESS they were trying ...

to destroy AMERICA as we once knew it.

That is the Bush legacy if you ask me.

tubbs-DC asks: "How do you prove that

Bush's actions prevented another 9/11 style attack?"

Obviously, someone once told you that there is no such thing as a "stupid question."

Whoever did that, LIED TO YOU!

But, how about the FACT that because of what Pres. Bush put into place, and the CIA, there were 19 Terrorist Attacks STOPPED between 9-11 and 11-07.

That help you out?

well written article
Bush didn't do well in the PR game but he did a great job as president. He did not end the mass murder the left has perpetrated on us for the past 35 years but he put in many judges who favor human life over the mass murder, which could be the ground work for that glorious day which is coming when the babies are allowed to live.

What the hell was clinton doing
before 9/11? Nothing! He ignored all the warnings and caused it happen due to his lack of experience and leadership ability and Clueless O is clinton times a trillion. Because of mealy mouths in Washington the WMD's in Iraq were moved except for the remnants Bush had our armed forces find, now syria and iran will use them against us and again we can thank the left, the libs, the moonbats. Now thanks to democrats in congress, carter and clinton and the CRA along with a little push from osama obama and acorn we now have a destroyed economy,I personally have been without my normal job and income since May 2006, thanks to Clueless O. Would to God that hillary-billary, AA OtJEC, acorn, the aclu, pelosi and reid were all gone forever. It's time to take America back from the loons.

USPatriot56 Jan 16, 2009 - 6:29 PM EST
USPatriot56, I could not agree more. With every single word. I too voted twice for him and I am bitter at the state of affairs. To make things worse, lib trolls come here and beat their chests that conservatism is dead when this man completeley abandoned us and our wing of what is left of HIS party.

Great president
President Bush is a great man...not perfect (like the left media and the dems), but clear, direct and honorable.

I will miss him.

Republican Party
If Bush was a good president in the minds of the those with the most influence in the party, there will have to be a long period before another Republican is elected to the whitehouse.

Who exactly was prez on Sept 11 2001
If this is true:

“the number one function of government-- to protect its citizens.”

How in the world can anyone claim Bush succeeded?!?

texasUP-chuck spits: "What the hell was

Bush doing before 9/11? Nothing!"

Really?

And I suppose you had someone read the actual briefing Pres. Bush received from the reprobate Clinton to you.

THERE WERE NO REAL WARNINGS, you twit!

Forget about that WMDs in Syria and the 550 metric tons of yellow cake, did ya?

When Bush came into Office:
* It was illegal for the CIA to share intelligence with the FBI.

* Terrorist were free to use the banking systems to transfer funds.

* There was virutally no terrorist security in the ports.

* There were no biological weapons detection systems in the major cities.

* Local police, fire and governments entities were not trained or capable of dealing with a bio-attack.

* There was no central database of the worlds known terrorists.

* Osama Bin Laden was free to travel as he pleased.

* Iraq was a terrorist State.

* Afganistan had terrorist training camps.

* Lybia was a terrorist state.

* There was no secure place to hold enemy combatants and other terrorists.

PRESIDENT BUSH FIXED ALL OF THE ABOVE!

And there are the 19 attempted terrorist attacks that Pres. Bush and the CIA STOPPED since 9-11 and kept your sorry butt safe!

RE in FL HUH?? Clinton's fault!
Clinton warned the Bushies that Al Qaeda was going to be the #1 threat. And Bush was president for over 7 months when 9/11 happened while he froze up while reading "My Pet Goat" in Florida. RE you must be one of the Obama birthers to think WMD was moved out of Iraq.Only the biggest idiots on the right belive that. But then again their is a lot of you and they have their own shows!!Own up your guy is a failure.

Consider the state of the nation
that Carter left behind: impotent, a laughingstock, with ruinous inflation and interest rates and suffering from a spiritual malaise that's only equivalent is battered wife syndrome.

Now consider what Bush leaves behind: impotent, universally hated, with its financial institutions in tatters, its economy wrecked, overrun with tens of millions of unskilled defiant Mexican peasants, with a government hyperinflating its own currency and nationalizing its entire private sector to avoid the by now inevitable Depression which is the legacy of the bastardized "Compassionate" conservatism..

Hell, "I am RIGHT," given the comparative devastation left in their wakes, I almost miss Carter.

Anne PA No Warning for 9/11?
When Bush needed a month vacation after just taking office he was given the infamous August PDB Al Qaeda was intent to strike the US.Since you are one of the Obama Birthers that was proved to be morons I think you have no idea was is reality.

Keep the change
Thank you.

So Upchuck: YOU are warned that al Qaeda

is going to be the #1 threat... THEN WHAT?

What do you do with THAT information?

Who? Okay, al Qaeda!
What? NOTHING! Not a clue!
Where? NOTHING! Not a clue!
When? NOTHING! Not a clue!
How? NOTHING! Not a clue!

Beginning to get a little picture of JUST HOW STUPID and INANE your statements and accusations are?

IF not, you're just too insufferably stupid, and intellectually limited to understand ANYTHING!

RealCon: At least Thomas Sowell ...
Is a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN of this country!

Sowell is ACTUALLY a black-AMERICAN unlike the foreigner that you idiots elected ...

Sorry Tom
As much as you would so dearly like to believe it, it's not just the "talking heads" and "know it alls" who think the Bush presidency was a disaster. The latest polls show 78% of Americans believe that. Living in continued denial won't help the Republican Party at all.

2010 is looking better all the time!

USPatriot56: Excellent point!
.

T-CA: YES, let's consider the state of

the nation, shall we? :-)

DEMOCRATS DELIBERATELY CAUSED THE HOME MORTGAGE CRISES!

It has been in the works for a long time, just waiting for Democrats to use it as a campaign tactic.

McCain even tried to prevent it once;
http://mcauleysworld.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/john-mccains- 2006-warning-about-todays-financial-crisis/

This video shows Democrats fighting Republicans who were trying to prevent the Mortgage Crisis;
http://vodpod.com/watch/1038839-dems-refuse-to-reform-fredd ie-fannie-in-2004-video

This ties Obama to the Mortgage Crisis;
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/09/barack_obama_and_the _strategy.html

This explains the tactic used as campaign strategy.
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/oct/15/the-cloward-piv en-strategy/

And Obama is not through causing misery to force America to accept his "Change".
He wants to slow job creation to create further hardship.
http://sweetness-light.com/archive/obamas-job-plan-does-not -make-sense

Enjoy! :-)

Cam: You guys might as well gloat ...
now, because after a few weeks of Obamanation, you'll wonder why you worhsip this fraud ...

Obama IS Bush III.

The joke is on you. Obama is no more running this country than Bush was.

BTW, we do not have a country anymore because we do not live under Constitutional Law any longer.

And by electing a NON-American POTUS, you guys have nailed the coffin shut.

You have given the globalists the final piece of the puzzle they needed to destroy America - a foreign-born POTUS.

Why do you think Henry Kissenger is so excited about the Obama presidency?

Is he a LIBERAL?

Isn't he hated by you left-wingers?

Isn't he part of the dreaded NIXON Whitehouse?

Yet he is extolling Obama's election.

Don't you wonder why?

It is a pity that you on the left actually believe that Obama is who HE says he is.

You'll see soon enough. So gloat now while you can, because you won't get to gloat for long.

You'll wish you had a second amendment one day ...very soon.

a wise man once said: I LOVE MY COUNTRY BUT I FEAR MY GOVERNMENT ...

No words have ever been more true!

Honorable man.
"But an honorable man."

Right.

Not to 99.9999% of the population of the world.

Which pretty much sums up the state of the Republican party.

Just keep pushing the honorable man thing.

The unitary executive agenda existed before Bush took office, as well as the Pan-American coalition.

Honor requires sincerity and there was no sincerity in the Bush Administration. Their objective is provable by their own written words: one big power grab to make the President a dictatorship in practice.

From signing statements to Iraq, all their agenda was a lust for power and no regard to the actual stated purposes.

That will be the Bush legacy, the Unitary Executive thrust up the arse of the American citizens and the world. It was premeditated and the ulterior motive in everything they did.

There is and was no honor.

Anne, Bush was warned by the
OUTGOING Clinton administration.Cliton could no longer be president. And as much as you might like to change history Bush not Clinton was president when 9/11 happened.

Vampire's Reflection: There is NONE...
What a perfect name for a left-wing, brain-washed ninny ...

Arrogance
"Whatever history's verdict on the Bush administration might be, it is likely to be very different from what we hear from the talking heads on television or read from the know-it-alls on editorial pages."

Which I assume you consider yourself above, you know, a "know-it-all" editorial page.

This isn't a "know-it-all" editorial because, well, you know, Sowell is superior to the "know-it-alls".

A fool and his dignity are soon parted.

Anne Clinton was the OUTGOING
President when he warned the Bushies.Bush instead put his effort in another Star Wars missle shield nonsense. You can't change history 9/11 happened on Bush's watch and he was not up to the job to protect America.

USPatriot56-AGAIN!
No, thank You. You are on a roll. Please keep it up.

I have been saying for weeks that this guy will just do even more of what drives us nuts and somehow the trolls will miss the point that this really IS Bush III.

Very ironic that OBummer wrapped Bush around the neck of Juan McStain so effectively when in fact, he plans to do the same things only much more so. I have to give him his due for being smarter than both GWB and Johnnie Mac. He KNOWS better than to try to get along with his adversaries.

What?
"But an honorable man..."

You've got to be kidding! Bush was an authoritarian lout. He and his Republicans, in collusion with Democrats, weakened this country economically, paying for their extravagant spending through inflation, which harmed the poorest the most. He revitalized the welfare state, expanding it in scope and certainly expense, like no Democrat since Lyndon Johnson. He set a bad example to other authoritarian types like Putin, so that now the world is less safe than before he took office. He oversaw the doubling of this whole business of lobbying, so that pork barrel spending ballooned. He effectively turned the government over to Obama and the Democrats, who are now going to do their own dirty work on this country. You conservatives are no less disgusting than the leftists for admiration of such anti-freedom, dictatorial politicians.

Anne
just wondering if you are going to tell texaschuck and everyone else the Remus Reid story.

Or maybe you have another tale for tonight.

Long time coming, but America will...
... soon be over.

Leftist ideals have slowly atrophied the country. It all started with suffrage. (See http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=990 7E4DC173AEE32A25752C2A9659C946195D6CF, read the right-hand column of the PDF file.)

As Ann Coulter ("the Democrat party is the party of women"), Burt Prelutsky ("If I had to describe liberals in a single word it would probably be 'feminine.'" -- http://townhall.com/columnists/BurtPrelutsky/2008/12/05/mi xing_it_up_with_left-wingers), and John Lott (http://johnrlott.tripod.com/op-eds/WashTimesWomensSuff112707.html and http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/2008/01/more-people-think-th at-womens-suffrage.html) have all noted, suffrage was the beginning of the long, long end of what made America great.

Like William Thackeray writes at the very beginning of Barry Lyndon, "... there has been hardly a mischief done in this world but a woman has been at the bottom of it."

The truth hurts.

A highly Principled & Honorable One,
A loving humble leader, who tried to do what was best for his country.
A man of faith and clean heart.
With a grateful heart wish him God's Blessings.

Double edged sword
The Sowell columns are a treat to read and they bring out voluminous #s of presents from the trolls.

Hopefully "Dr"Doug, Doofass, Left Angle, UnKoolMoose, and Mario will be here soon!

I suspect historians
may have very little interest in the things that seem to consume both detractors and supporters of Bush now.

They may simply note with some degree of wryness that without firing a shot, under the Bush presidency, Mexico regained her lost northern provinces and that as far as history is concerned, Bush ended a temporary period of territorial suzerainty of those lands acquired by James Knox Polk in 1848.

I know that living in Southern California following eight years of George Bush, I am no longer living in America, but in a transitional territory, a frontier being reabsorbed by its original owner, and increasingly hostile to my culture, language, religion, and ethnicity. Thanks very much to George Bush, a gentle ethnic cleansing of the former northern Mexican provinces has inalterably begun.

Muchas gracias, Excelencia.

USPatriot56
Funny, the other day I posted essentially the same comment as YOU about Vampire's Reflection!
Great minds think alike, huh?

The left's attitude toward George Bush regarding security was perfectly exemplified the other night on Hannity's show on Fox by left-wing Kristin Powers, who was unwilling to concede that Bush had kept us safe since 9/11, claiming that there was no way to know this. Funny, I don't see the left taking this attitude toward Bill Clinton; although the 9/11 plot was in its final planning stages under him, once he left the White House, since nothing had happened under his watch, it was de facto proof of his competence on security - and naturally, the fact that it happened during George Bush's presidency was de facto proof that it MUST be all Bush's fault.

And of course, should another 9/11 or worse happen in this country under Obama, even if any terrorists captured in connection with it were to very publicly proclaim that Obama's less intense security policies gave them the opening they needed to hit America which they didn't have as a result of the security measures of the Bush Administration - in fact, if Osama Bin Laden HIMSELF released a videotape afterward saying EXACTLY this - the loony left will STILL blame George Bush 100% for it. Hopefully, the non-Kool Aid drinkers in this country at that stage won't be quite as naive.

You call us idiots?

Read your words from above. You can't even write a coherent sentence, and we're the idiots!

From 7:09 p.m.: "RE you must be one of the Obama birthers to think WMD was moved out of Iraq.Only the biggest idiots on the right belive that. But then again their is a lot of you and they have their own shows!!Own up your guy is a failure."

He Kept Us Safe For More than 7 Years
Since the awful 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, there have not been any more terrorist attacks in this country. I feel safe with him as president, and am not sure what I will feel after Jan. 20th.

Defending Bush from Leftists
Sometimes I don't mind repeating myself. To reiterate the answers I gave your ideological brethren:

"He exploited the tragedy of 9/11 to build political power based on fear and hate."

Which is why there are interment camps filled with US citizens to this day. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He lied the country into an illegal and disastrous war."

Which is why he pretended neutrality while covertly aiding a warring nation and seeking an opportunity to bring the US into war. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He undermined our morality as a nation with his policies of torture and rendition."

Which is why he executed US citizens after a brief military tribunal. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"He initiated illegal spying on Americans,"

Which is why he instituted an Office of Censorship to censor all US communication. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"he politicized the judiciary,"

Which is why he decided to pack the Supreme Court. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"he undermined and misused science,"

Which is why he directed the Manhattan Project to create the most destructive weapon in human history. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

"and he tried to cover up all these crimes through secrecy and obstruction of justice (3 million emails disappeared!)."

Which, again, is why he instituted an Office of Censorship to censor all US communication. Oh wait, that was leftist icon FDR.

All any defender of Bush has to do is pull out the history of WW II and Conyers et al will pack their legal briefs and slink away.

Bush's Legacy
He kept us safe.

Roberts and Alito on the Supreme Court.

I repeat -- what would YOU do?
I seriously doubt that few leftists, even the ones on TH, are really stupid enough to believe that Osama conceived, funded, planned, trained, and put into motion the 9/11 plot between 12/12/2000 (the date of resolution of Bush v Gore) and 9/11/01.

For those who are, no amount of evidence or reason will change their minds. For those who aren't, it really should be pointed out that the infamous "bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US" was generally right, on the same level of general correctness as "Politician determined to win votes," but wrong in every particular. Here's the link to the memo if you doubt me:

http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/terrorism/80601pdb.html

But all that being said, pretend you were POTUS for a moment. And let me give you far more accurate and timely information than Pres. Bush had.

On Aug. 31, 2001, your CIA, NSA and FBI chiefs file into your office and tell you, "Mr./Ms. President, sometime in the next month 20 Muslim males, all foreign nationals between the ages of 20 and 45, are going to hijack commercial jetliners. We know these planes will be taking off from three of the twenty largest cities in America. We know that they will be used as flying bombs against a large military installation, a large commercial/industrial installation, and a large governmental institution. That's all we know right now."

Ball's in your court, leftists. What do YOU do?
