Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Outliers" are not politicians who lie even more than other politicians. It is a term used by statisticians to describe some data that are far away from the average-- data on seven-foot women or freezing temperatures in Los Angeles, for example.

"Outliers" is also the title of a very insightful and very readable new book by best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell. The book's subtitle is "The Story of Success." It is a study of the factors behind people who have had spectacular achievements in fields ranging from hockey to computers.

One of the first groups of outliers studied are top-level Canadian hockey players, a wholly disproportionate number of whom were born in the first three months of the year. Moreover, the same pattern was found among top Czech hockey players.

The key factor turned out to be a fixed date-- January 1st in both countries-- for selecting young boys to be placed on special hockey teams that were the elite of their age groups.

Players born in January were the most over-represented among the top hockey players in both countries. As young boys, they would have just missed the selection cut-off for that year and would have had another year to grow before the next selection date.

Obviously a boy born the day after the selection date would be virtually a year older when the next selection date came around, compared to a boy born the day before the selection date, even though they were both officially the "same" age, competing for places on the same elite hockey teams.

That kind of difference in age-- at a very young age-- was a big advantage, in terms of size and physical maturity, among boys in a very physical sport. Being tracked into elite hockey teams, early on, allowed that initial advantage to be parlayed into an ever larger advantage of experience and training with elite teams over the years.

Many other "outliers" in achievement in many other fields likewise came from special backgrounds or special circumstances. These people have been in areas ranging from computers to corporations to residents of one Pennsylvania town with unusually low rates of heart disease, despite having residents whose diets are laden with fat and sugar, who do little exercise and who tend to be obese.

The theme running through this book is that spectacular individual achievements-- outliers-- are not simply a matter of personal merit but come out of a background of special circumstances that enable outstanding individual ability to lead to performances far beyond the norm.

Examples from radically different settings, ranging from the rice paddies of China to Manhattan's lower east side, show the same principle at work among wholly different people in wholly different times and places.

This book is an outstanding achievement in itself, and its readability, insights and imagination make it one of the best books of 2008 or any other year.

It is not easy, however, to share the author's belief that social policies can spread the advantages of some to the population at large. It seems even less likely that empowering politicians to do so will make things better overall than they are in the very imperfect world we currently live in.

This is not to say that nothing can be done. One of the most inspiring chapters in "Outliers" is about a KIPP charter school serving minority students, whose academic performances far exceed those of other minority students, even though these students were selected by lottery, rather than on the basis of ability.

A lot could be done to support and expand such schools. But a crucial factor in the success of the KIPP schools is a commitment by the students and their parents to a demanding educational program. No politician or bureaucrat can create that.

Indeed, politicians and bureaucrats have done much that has had the net effect of spreading attitudes that undermine the prospects of using currently available opportunities.

If enough people read and ponder the implications of "Outliers," perhaps that can help begin the much needed process of turning around current counterproductive attitudes toward education and toward life.

More proof...
...that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is the one and only constant of consistency in life.

That fat thing though, I gotta find out what they're doing...Oh wait, they're in Densylvania. Nevermind.

Special circumstances nothing
When I was a fifth-grader, there were two tetherball courts on the school grounds. The game was played almost solely by girls. I loved the game, but the tallest girls had the advantage. One girl, Angie, was an Amazon, the tallest in the class. Her height was considered insurmountable, and the only time she ever lost was when she was not trying very hard. The queen of the court was another girl who was smart, several months older than the rest of us, and had more experience playing the game.

One day, I served to Angie. She decided she was going to win and take my spot. She gained control of the ball and hit it high over my head several times, confident of victory. But I did not want her to win. I wanted to win and believed that I deserved to win and that I must act on this belief. I ran up front in a face off and jumped as high as I had ever jumped in my life, higher than any of the other girls had ever seen on the courts. I heard gasps in the line as I reached the ball and knocked it back past her. I could see Angie's morale fall. Something must have changed in her at that moment, some deeply held belief. She timidly retreated to the back of her side to defend. I gained total control of the ball in the next come-around and pummeled it around the pole. No one ever beat me after that, not even the current queen, who was similarly unsettled after that incident.

EVERYTHING is a matter of free will.

"EVERYTHING is a matter of free will."
Exactly! Just look at that "guy" who had a baby. Boy (or girl, no offense intended), I bet he/she/it left a trail of battered bodies on the tetherball courts. Can't wait to read its book on how it got what it wants.

I "achieve", therefore I am.

Dr. Sowell,
I was waiting for you to apply the outlier implications to your past defenses of the outrageous bonuses given to CEOs whose companies fail. Were these slugs all born on January 1? Just what 'background of special circumstances' did they crawl forth from?

Flip side
There is the other side of this coin; those who came from no advantages at all, yet managed to achieve. Dt. Sowell's point about the KIPP school seems to have been missed by most of the readers so far.

DUNKIRK THE KIDS FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS NOW
There is a movement afoot to educate Christian parents concerning the extremely harmful consequences of allowing the pagan government schools to indoctrinate their children. The object is to get those children into Christian schools or into home schooling to keep them from becoming part of the 80% of Christian youngsters who depart from their faith during the first year of secular college.

The secular schools cannot be reformed because what they are is intrinsic to their nature as created by the pagan government. They can only be abandoned as well they should be (even by non-Christians) because of the seriously inferior education they provide.

Christians must stop tithing their children, the future of America, to Satan's indoctrination centers or else cease to be surprised when they become little Marxists, Obamaites, sodomites, political and cultural radicals, atheists, agnostics, skeptics, libertines etc. How can a couple of hours of church on Sundays compete with the many hours of pagan indoctrination at school every week, week after week, month after month and year after year for twelve long years? Utterly impossible! And those who seek to capture the future of our nation by miseducating our children are oh so very well aware of it!

Colin Cody you need to explain Dunkirk
I agree..100% I homeschool...

Most people don't know what "DunKirk" was (products of public education)

The 'miracle' of Dunkirk
Hundreds of civilian ships helped the soldiers to escape
More than 300,000 troops were evacuated from Dunkirk and the surrounding beaches in May and June 1940.
At the time the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said it was "a miracle of deliverance".

"A miracle" - is the best description of what happened at Dunkirk in May and June 1940.

Hundreds of thousands of troops were rescued from the German advance in the nick of time.

The troops were desperately trapped and needed back on the home shores to help defend against a Nazi invasion.

They were rescued from the harbor and beaches near to Dunkirk by a curious assembly of many different types of craft.

Many of the little ships, such as motor yachts, fishing boats and all manner of other such craft, were privately owned.
This is when the little ships came to play their part. A variety of motor boats, fishing smacks, trawlers, lifeboats, paddle steamers and many other types of craft came over the channel to assist in the escape.

They mainly ferried the troops from the beaches to the destroyers laying offshore - but thousands of troops came all the way back to England in some of these boats.

The escape captured the minds and hearts of the British people at a time when it looked probable that we too would soon be invaded.

It seemed like a victory in just getting the troops back - over a third of a million of them - to fight another day.

Homeschool, Charter, or, Christian?
Homeschool is the best way to make sure your kids get what they need, If you can't then a good patriotic school is next then Christian school, after that, then you shouldn't of had kids.IMHO

There are some good charter schools where the kids actually only learn education not indoctrination but the left will never go for it.

I can hear people rebutting my putting a patriotic school before a Christian school. I have no problem with Christian schools but, I also believe it's the parents/church's job to instill those values not an educators.

If everything is taught from a "creation" standpoint or a radical "Dewey" standpoint without calling attention to both ideals then the necessary ability to reason, debate, and think independently is lost in the shuffle.

To know thy enemy.. will lead to defeating thy enemy..

pb
Exactly! Completely outrageous that any group can take advantage of society in that way. Those that achieve disproportionately for whatever reason are doing so by taking advantage of circumstances that are unfair to the majority of citizens. These circumstances should not be the deciding factor and should be mitigated by government action.

Those that refuse to cooperate by limiting their success should be dealt with harshly. Concentration camps and if need be gas chambers and ovens is the answer. Seems to me a test was run of that system years ago. Good idea.

Healthcare Outliers
Not having read the book, this concept may be covered, but the fundamental cause of the early failure of private insurance has been the inability of the the industry to accout for the outliers. My initial family health insurance program for a famiy of four in 1971 cost $75 per month and had no deductible and no top limit. By the time that my disabled daughter had reached the age of twenty the premium was $37,000 per year. She was obviously an outlier. If there is any valid excuse for the government to claim the life and death decisions inherent in the existing and proposed "Healthcare" programs it is to be the backup system for the outliers who do not have the means or methods to provide essential services to those for whom they have that responsibility. There is no other valid reason for allowing non-medically trained individuals to possess the power of life over citizens of a society. This was amply defined when the National Socialst Party of Germany possessed that power and used it for political reasons, which appears to be the rationale behind the single payer Healthcare Plan now under discusion and first proposed by Edwin Witte, author of FDRs social security program.

'LEMONADE'?
There is also a public high school in Sarasota, Florida which was originally set up for students with 'behavior problems'. The mission of this school was to transform these students, 'lemons' if you will, and teach them how to make 'lemonade' out of their lives. The foundation of this public school mirrored the principles of a 'military' like academy, with 'Rules', 'Rewards' for achievement and 'Consequences' for what is unacceptable.
The success of this public school is profound, parents of all students are requesting that their children be admitted there, even moving to Sarasota for this educational opportunity.
The reason this public school has been 'successful' has been because the administrators and teachers 'have' the authority to follow the 'policies' they established, they are in 'control'.
Years ago all public schools ran this way, then the 'do gooders' of society (the courts, ACLU and others) took authority away from the schools and handed it to the 'students' and their parents. And we all know what's happened since; there's no discipline and no saftey. Students do as they please, if they even bother to go to school. They dress anyway they choose, carry weapons, use drugs, form gangs and prevent the students that are in school to be educated from receiving that education.
The 'do gooders' ruined our public schools, and are also running rampant in our government and Universities.

Edna Eagle
As you say, Dunkirk means evacuate. I note the retreating Brits/French left their weapons on the beach. Upon returning, the soldiers were virtually unarmed. Churchill notes in his book "Their Finest Hour" how the arrival from the US of a few thousand tons of rifles relieved his fears that his Army would have nothing to fight with. Thousand of hunting rifles were donated by Americans to be sent to Britain. Most of them were eventually destroyed by the British.

As for schooling, there is a continuing move towards alternate schooling. The public schools have been broken by political correctness. Integration offered enormous possibilities for massive improvement, but like most public handling of civil rights since the 60's, fear of "offending" someone has diluted the possible gains. Still, it had to be done, and perfection is too much to expect.

Motivate and Teach
First you motivate them to believe they are special;then you motivate them to prove they can. Nothing unusual about that.

Oh, and of course you remove them from the group that tells them if they do succeed and achieve They Be Actin White...or they will be Unpopular...and thus demotivates them.

Once again
Sowell notes intriguing information. The point seems to be that seemingly small factors can have enormous effect. There is a paradox here, namely that trying to eliminate "unfair" advantage usually has the result of lowering the achievers to the mediocre, rather than elevating the average of all. A perfect analogy of "fair" socialism and "unfair" capitolism. The best solution is to make an imperfect playing field as level as possible and then reward merit. Meanwhile, parents should note factors like Sowell brings up, and try to get these factors on their child's side.

Pistol
Very good points. However, liberals aren't interested in a level field or equal opportunities...they only want "equal results" - an extremely different
goal.

@ pistol
They were complete fools to leave their weapons agreed!

The point, I wanted to make and didn't very well, was that 300,000 were "rescued" and lived to fight later.

That's the point, kids are getting indoctrinated and it's affecting society so badly that the result was the socialist elect getting elected. He wants control of the kids now ages 0-5 too...he's said so himself (so did Hitler)
He supports the UN's rights of a Child which hands your kids to the government.
(go to http://www.parentalrights.org for what it entails)

Ask a kid, what the "shot heard round the world" was..you're apt to hear "the day Kennedy was shot."
(don't laugh, I'm not making it up, one kid in our homeschool group actually said that after 9 years in public school)

Ask a kid, who was Karl Marx? and the answer you get is Harpo Marx's brother

Ask a kid, what a jibib is, and they know the right answer..an all black, head to to covering, for women and you'll catch an earful for even asking.

That's why, We The People, have to send the small boats to the schools to rescue the kids or
we'll all be "citizens of the world", instead of free American's under the socialist elect and his followers till the day we die. If these kids aren't educated instead of indoctrinated.

Edna Eagle
Thanks for filling in that historical information about Dunkirk. I was alive at the time and have seen at least one movie about it, so was not aware that it was a part of history largely unknown today.

Great schooling is the product of great teachers. Absent great Christian teachers in great Christian schools, the best schooling is home schooling. Great Christian schools by my definition teach all sides of the issues because that is the only way to teach students how to think analytically, synthetically and creatively. Without teaching children how to think for themselves, you have only made parrots of them, not scholars, and you have not even begun to equip them for life.

Given the abysmal state of the "church" today, I would be extremely reluctant to rely on that particular institution to supply religious education to my children or anyone else. That should be done in the home and in an excellent Christian school if one is available.

I have heard of patriotic high schools in some parts of the country and would think they might offer a superior education if the teachers are competently conservative. Such a school at the college level should also draw many excellent students.

Simple Solution
No matter what the cutoff was for those hockey players, say July 1, the results would be the same.

The simple solution to level the ice, so to speak, is use ability rather than arbitrary dates. Start them, perhaps based on the cutoff dates, but soon thereafter move them into a group where there abilities are sufficient.

The same approach can be used in most anything.

How's THAT for a performance-based solution?

In Chicago
There is the Chicago Hope Academy. About 180 students who are essentially at risk all day, every day. Someone had a vision and made it happen. All 32 of their first graduating class entered college. The parents and staff make it happen. They attempted to get public funding, but alas, it would put restrictions on how things are done. They are in danger of closing by the end of the academic year...because they need money. The Principal there has managed to pay his staff and run a school with merely 2 million dollars. We need more guys like Bob Muzikowski.

No worries Colin
I've homeschooled since 1984 with my 2 adult sons and now again with my "suprise" eight year old daughter.
I saw that article about the Dunkirk movement too and there's even a utube link floating around.
It was interesting but a bit much for me.

I rely more on HSLDA for information and what they're saying about the UN Rights of the Child and it's impact on ANY American kid is horrific, though it's worded with tons of sugar coating.
have a look at parentalrights.org and you'll see.

Trulib, nice retort to Pb!
The group to target is first born children. I believe that a study of CEOs found most to be first born children. Of course you must keep them in the family during the formative years so that the next child doesn't simply assume the first born status, but at age eighteen, they could be taken and either culled, jailed for life or put in the army as infantry for life. That would be justice.

Tom Sowell is an outlier, of sorts
He has written extensively on how a child can be made to become a more condident and successful individual. That accomplishment is in addition to all the books on economics and social interaction he has written.

If you want to be truely surprised about how much of a broad contribution to this country a single man can make take a few minutes to go to Google and pull down a list of all of Thomas Sowell's books. I have read many of them and to anyone looking for answers to many of lifes problems they are a real treasure.

Good point. Socialism, a.k.a Liberalism, has always been about "fairness". Now most reasonable people with any kind of self motivation and drive would only want equal opportunity to compete for a job or admission to a university. Liberals want to take the "fairness" to the next level by guaranteeing everyone gets the job or admission regardless of their degree of qualification.

If you think about it this kind of thinking will over time tell all former competitors, there is no need to hone their skills to be excellent. People will see there is no upside to be the best, as there will be no reward for it. We will have conditioned society to mediocrity.

Germany before unification is the best example of the difference in results in the two ways of thinking. East Germany was so far behind the West in standard of living, but its citizens were told they were actually living better. When the wall came down and they saw how much better the West German citizens lived, they became angry, then seriously depressed.

People need the unpredictability of freedom in order for their imaginations of accomplishments to reach higher than their government's constraints.

She felt I should leave him in a lower class where he could always be successful and recieve easy high marks. I said I would prefer struggled for C's and B's to easily attained A's. She thought I was rude and stupid. Shouldn't our children strive. As it turned out the higher classes are still too easy. I don't think they want to push the children at all.

That is good advice to anyone seeking an education in the way the world really works. A book of his that opened my eyes was "A Conflict Of Visions". It gave me a window into the thought process of both left and right. Dr. Sowell is a national treasure.

Colin Cody of TX, Share your concern of "Christian youngsters depart from their faith during the first year of secular college."

Yes, know your enemies. Not only know your enemies, but also know yourselves, the victory belongs to you. We know the evil one is so cunning that he never on vacation. excellent link. I had not even heard that particular story before. Not surprising coming from Detroit. Can you imagine the looks on the faces of the public school teachers if a conservative man swooped in and built successful schools right in front of them? Such disgrace cannot, of course, ever be allowed to happen on such a scale.

Happy New Year Dr. Sowell
Thank you for your articles. Thank you for your sanity!

Pro from Dover, re: Detroit
When I was driving big trucks, I went to every major American city and many in Canada.

Without a doubt, Detroit is a cesspool. It shouldn't qualify as an American city. If ever there was a city that should mandate its law-abiding citizens carry weapons, it would be Detroit.

Hitchhiker and DavidMac
The stories in Michigan of Detroit's tragically-comic city government and schools are legion, but they are spoken of in hushed tones. Its decay started with the first black mayor (40 years ago), "King" Coleman Young. From the day he got in office, any criticism forthcoming was loudly proclaimed; "racism!". The local papers went fetal and the decay continued.

Over the years, the Detroit school system has gone through a succession of black characters, er, excuse me, "superintendents", with each earning close to a quarter of a million bucks a year. With each passing year, the schools got worse.

The school district recently tried to shut down some schools due to very few students attending, but never underestimate the rage of a black female welare recipient! They showed up a board meetings screaming that their "chirren" will stay in their local school! The result is that the schools stayed open, and now some buses carry 2 or 3 students -total - on their run.

To have a successful school operation outside of Detroit's control would bring their whole con crashing down. But this is a very blue state so it isn't about to happen.

Blacks, as a group, don't care what something costs or consequences for their choices. They want what they want and that, right now!

One more DIEtroit story.
While traveling in Europe a few years ago, I struck up a conversation with some locals at a restaurant in Bavaria. Explaining where I lived in the U.S., they said they knew of Michigan very well from school lessons, but they wanted to know how far I lived from Detroit.

After telling them, they said that they heard that it was an "American backwater", and very dangerous to travel to because of the violent blacks who lived there.

Detroit's reputation had gone international.

These were common folks who were having a lunch break during a weekend trip to a small resort town, and they had heard of America's Lagos, Nigeria on the River.

The insanity in Detroit continues.

Outliers
Sounds like something Adolph Hitler would have enjoyed reading. The State creating super humans. How lovely indeed.

SATs and Acheivement
A good friend's were under 1000, he told me; mine, too, were under 1000. He's a successful labor lawyer and I'm a stocker, but along the way, somehow, I came close--and may yet finish--a doctorate in literature. I very much admire Roger Staubach, whose passes were not quite like Joe Namath's or Terry Bradshaw's, but whose heart was bound and determined to find a way. Niether a sociologist nor a data-interpreter am I, but common observation tells one that "beneath the surface" oftentimes lie the determining factors.

Still, as Harvey Mansfield once put it in a TV interview, he "was fated" to become a professor. And isn't it noticeable how, in many ways, folks, people like Bill Cinton, no matter how high they go, manage to bring with them aspects of their roots. This outcome is especially noticeable in "success stories" of "stars" who come from moderate to extreme dysfunction. (Sadly, all this means is, for example: alchoholism, addictions, adulteries, divorce, incest and suicide.) One shudders to think of generations to come, the adults of tomorrow whose childhoods were shaped by the horrors of oppression, drilled-in-ethnic-hatred, bombings, suicide bombings and all the rest of it. All the more reason(s), I think, to be grateful for the example of an Obama Presidency and World Leader.

Your convoluted logic is humorous. You must be a high school junior and never made the football team.

Don't despair; they may have an opening for you in the gin rummy club.

Oh Testosterone I love you....
It's common in Texas to deliberately start boys in school late. Being 14 in 7th grade is a BIG BIG deal. Chances are almost 100 percent you will be well into puberty and amassing man muscle while people in your class have little squeeky voices, dicks like pencil stubs and muscles like -- well, like a girl basically. Who is going to play and excel in football? I was born 9-1 which was the last day to be eligible to enter school and, frankly, was a late bloomer on the puberty thing as well. I was singing soprano when I entered 8th grade. Had my parents "skipped" me 2 grades like the school wanted to do back in New York ( we moved in 5th grade) I would have hit puberty as a High School Junior. Actually, that might have been kinder. I didn't figure out how much of my lagging behind in P.E. was just because of the age thing until well into adulthood. Kids just don't think about stuff, they blame themselves. Troy Aikmann's parents did what a lot of football parents did. They delayed putting him into school untill state law forced them. At least I went to school under the old "jr high" system where 7,8,9 go together. Nothing makes puberty more obvious than 7th and 9th graders playing dodgeball together and by the time I was a 9th grader, late bloomer or not I could damned near kill one of those little guys with that dodgeball. BTW, Wendy, I hope you have more than that tetherball triumph going for you. You're extrapolating an awful lot from it.

Thank you,
My home school philosophy (as well as my life) is arm yourself to do battle with idiots, tyrants, and usurpers.(Obama fits all 3)

The best way is strong Christian values, logic and a well maintained arsenal. Do I attend church..no,too many hypocrites,do I follow the 10 commandments yes, as best as a mortal can.
Do I love the freedom and blessings this country has..YES, with every bone in my body.

I'd rather read the Declaration of Independence than the bible..it's true and that's how I've raised my kids. And taught through our home school.
Our home school group is made up of conservative minister's wives and their kids but we're getting a bunch of kids who's parents aren't happy with the left turn that education has made and the fact their 8th grader can barely read a 3rd grade book with any comprehension.
I teach from a judeo-christian point of view as our founding fathers and I'm politically incorrect. My classes in history and science are always packed because I arm the kids with logic and the ability to debate their point of view. In short the ability to think, research and rebut.
My "kids" who've moved on to higher ed. are doing extremely well and are prepared to face the atheist mind warping secular idiots in colleges because the have logic, values and a big arsenal.

When a company is between a rock and a hard spot-- Must make enough profits to survive and attract investors and employees, versus must satisfy government regulations and pressures and union demands that are in direct conflict with making profits from the sale of good products -- the company must provide very lucrative employment packages to get ANYONE to take or stay in the lead positions. If it is obvious the business situation is failing the only "leaders" that are willing to step are mercenaries who MUST be given guarantees that even if they do FAIL they will not go away empty-handed. They are being paid and offered financial parachutes to TRY to save the company, r to at least make it look good even while its ship sinks.

The problems are that the government and unions should never force the companies into such indefensible positions. Once a company is in such a failing mode you can ALWAYS expect a lot of PR about the wonderful PC stuff the company is doing and their great plans for the future. The mercenaries consistently take such positions when leading a failing company, as have NO OTHER OPTIONS!!

Saw Gladwell on CSPAN
The Chapter he emphasized was about Airline disasters as COMMUNICATION failures, as a function of CULTURE, specifically the POWER structure of the Culture! Fascinating stuff.

Interestingly Gladwell mentioned he saw his critics (from the commieqr mind set?) as accusing him of Cultural Determinism, while he saw himself as saying just the opposite. Sowell, from the Individual Liberty perspective, sees Gladwell as Socialist.

Wonder who comes closet to the reality of Gladwell's thinking and premises? What the CQ's see, what Sowell sees, or what Gladwell THINKS he is saying.
