Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

There is an old Russian fable, with different versions in other countries, about two poor peasants, Ivan and Boris. The only difference between them was that Boris had a goat and Ivan didn't. One day, Ivan came upon a strange-looking lamp and, when he rubbed it, a genie appeared. She told him that she could grant him just one wish, but it could be anything in the world.

Ivan said, "I want Boris' goat to die."

Variations on this story in other countries suggest that this tells us something about human beings, not just Russians.

It may tell us something painful about many Americans today, when so many people are preoccupied with the pay of corporate CEOs. It is not that the corporate CEOs' pay affects them so much. If every oil company executive in America agreed to work for nothing, that would not be enough to lower the price of a gallon of gasoline by a dime. If every General Motors executive agreed to work for nothing, that would not lower the price of a Cadillac or a Chevrolet by one percent.

Too many people are like Ivan, who wanted Boris' goat to die.

It is not even that the average corporate CEO makes as much money as any number of professional athletes and entertainers. The average pay of a CEO of a corporation big enough to be included in the Standard & Poor's index is less than one-third of what Alex Rodriguez makes, about one-tenth of what Tiger Woods makes and less than one-thirtieth of what Oprah Winfrey makes.

But when has anyone ever accused athletes or entertainers of "greed"?

It is not the general public that singles out corporate CEOs for so much attention. Politicians and the media have focused on business leaders, and the public has been led along, like sheep.

The logic is simple: Demonize those whose place or power you plan to usurp.

Politicians who want the power to micro-manage business and the economy know that demonizing those who currently run businesses is the opening salvo in the battle to take over their roles.

There is no way that politicians can take over the roles of Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods or Oprah Winfrey. So they can make any amount of money they want and it doesn't matter politically.

Those who want more power have known for centuries that giving the people somebody to hate and fear is the key.

In 18th century France, promoting hatred of the aristocracy was the key to Robespierre's acquiring more dictatorial power than the aristocracy had ever had, and using that power to create a bigger bloodbath than anything under the old regime.

In the 20th century, it was both the czars and the capitalists in Russia who were made the targets of public hatred by the Communists on their road to power. That power created more havoc in the lives of more people than czars and capitalists ever had combined.

As in other countries and other times, today it is not just a question of which elites win out in a tug of war in America. It is the people at large who have the most at stake.

We have just seen one of the biggest free home demonstrations of what happens in an economy when politicians tell businesses what decisions to make.

For years, using the powers of the Community Reinvestment Act and other regulatory powers, along with threats of legal action if the loan approval rates varied from the population profile, politicians have pressured banks and other lending institutions into lending to people they would not lend to otherwise.

Yet, when all this blows up in our faces and the economy turns down, what is the answer? To have more economic decisions made by politicians, because they choose to say that "deregulation" is the cause of our problems.

Regardless of how much suffocating regulation may have been responsible for an economic debacle, politicians have learned that they can get away with it if they call it "deregulation."

No matter what happens, for politicians it is "heads I win and tails you lose." If we keep listening to the politicians and their media allies, we are all going to keep losing, big time. Keeping our attention focused on CEO pay-- Boris' goat-- is all part of this game. We are all goats if we fall for it.

PresidentDon (reply #107): Please put your paranoia away and get a good night's sleep tonight. Speaking from 15 years experience as both a local and a federal prosecutor, I can assure you that the sidewalk shakedowns you fear are not very high on the list of things you really need to worry about.

Officer Friendly does not have the right to stop you against your will, not even for an instant, without at least an objectively reasonable suspicion that you are engaged in criminal activity. (The officer will later be required to demonstate the basis for that suspicion to the satisfaction of a reviewing judge) Even then he cannot search you unless (1) you consent to a search, or (2) he has a valid search warrant issued by a judge only on a showing of probable cause to believe that the search would produce evidence of criminal activity, or (3) under very limited circumstances an officer may be able to conduct a warrantless search based on probable cause to believe that criminal activity has occurred or is occurring. (Here again, the officer must justify the search after the fact to a judge -- a judge who will review the search using the same standard that would have been used to issue a search warrant.)

More important, even if you are correct in assuming that all cops are basically Gestapo thugs who really want to shake down random citizens for no good reason, in reality they seldom have the opportunity to do so. The problem is that there is so much real crime going on that most cops are way too busy arresting real criminals to mess with good, and probably misunderstood, citizens like yourself.

Let me guess: You threw the joint away when you saw the officer coming, and he inexplicably arrested you anyway. Sorry man, that's his job.

Community Reinvestment Act
As a new-hire young bank teller back in the early eighties it seemed to me that the most important thing my bosses wanted me to know on my first day of work was WHERE was the file for the CRA to be found. Management seemed "scared" that "someone" might just walk into the branch and ask to review the CRA file. If I as an employee could not immediately identify where it was to be found, there would be a HellToupee and the Bank Manager would be wearing it. This memory has stayed with me because it was very serious to my bosses. I wondered what pressures they were under...
(During that era I was newly employed at United California Bank, Bank of America and Peoples Bank in Wa. state- all were similar in that respect.)

Prophecy
This column reminds me of the politicians jealous, power- hungry behavior in "Atlas Shrugged". The looter/destroyers in Washington are making this book come to life, unfortunately.

Vintage Sowell
This is Sowell at his best. I wish he still stuck to this and stayed away from hacky political columns.

English History 101
Boris, of "Ivan and Boris," is actually the person who originated the saying, "He really gets my goat" for someone who is annoying to you.

After Ivan annoyed the h*ll out of Boris by wishing his goat away, Boris looked at the genie in disbelief and exclaimed, "He really gets my
goat???" Naturally, the phrase has undergone slight semantic changes over the years.

This is an arcane, but linguistically important story that I just now made up.

The point of Dr. Sowell's fable is that Ivan would rather have his neighbor's goat die, then to ask the genie to give him one of his own. Some in government and on the streets would rather for the goats of some to die, than work for their own. If we want look at, who is really obese, I would suggest that we consider whether massive governmental entitlement programs should be labled that as well.

Boris can figure out a way to feed his goat, but those on the class warfare bandwagon and on the dole, would rather Boris join them in misery.

Agree and Disagree
Being a fiscally conservative person I almost always agree with Thomas Sowell. And, I agree with him here, in that I believe politicians are using executive salaries and bonuses to create class envy, and class warfare. Communism and socialism is built on these. My official position on all this is that a private corporation can pay its CEO's any way it wants. If someone gets a huge bonus, or wins the lottery, then I should be happy for them, not envy them. However, I strongly believe that people should be paid what they are worth. When a CEO gets a huge bonus then it should be for a good reason. For example, if he lead the company into incredible success and profit. But, if a CEO is getting a huge bonus that he clearly doesn't deserve (he helped run the company into bankruptcy) then that means the company being poorly managed and is making bad decisions. Companies like that are basically rewarding bad ideas and failure, and I shouldn't invest in them or help bail them out.
Even though Thomas is right that a CEO's salary doesn't impact me directly, it is a good indicator of how the company is being led at the top.

Boris & Ivan
I certainly don't want Boris's goat to die, but I would like to see it go on a diet, since it has become obese and I can't afford to feed it, nor can poor old Boris any longer on his own.

Boris & Ivan
This parable has meaning to many of us who have worked in industry for years. Resentment comes not so much from coveting the salaries corporate executives have acquired; it comes more from years of hard work and sincere effort by loyal employees, only to be laid-off to improve the quarterly bottom-line allowing the executive bonuses could be enhanced.
Politics is not only to be found in government. Many of us have seen less capable employees promoted ahead of us as a reward not for their ability to achieve, but as a recognition of their ability to flatter and beguile their bosses - much as Obama has accomplished to make it to the presidency this year.
Much of the resentment toward corporate executives comes from these circumstances. The "Peter Principle", where an executive is promoted one level above their competence, has spawned much of the resentment to which Dr. Sowell refers.
Perhaps we also see this characteristic in Obama - I pray not, however. Incompetence at the corporate level results in chapter 11 banckrupcty; i.e., GM, Ford & Chrysler. Incompetence at the government level results in economic and cultural disasters such as Russia, Cuba, Yugoslavia, etc. Historically, such incompetence resulted in the Fall of Rome, Greece, Persia, Babylonia, etc. Let us pray that Obama is not our Nero.

Obama's Words

"The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society. And to that extent as radical as people tried to characterize the Warren court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it’s been interpreted, and the Warren court interpreted it in the same way that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. It says what the states can’t do to you, it says what the federal government can’t do to you, but it doesn’t say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf. And that hasn’t shifted. One of the I think tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court focused, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributed change and in some ways we still suffer from that."

Agree & Disagree
Anyone should get paid whatever the market will bear and it's none of the government's business. Unless, that is, the corporation then comes to the federal government with its hand out.

It would, of course, be best if the federal government did what it is supposed to do & told these companies to take a hike. But since our government has no compunction against stealing from us to give to huge corporations, I think the least these CEO's can do is to tell us how they earned their millions a year in salaries. And it seems to me that a man who pisses away billions or hundreds of billions as some of these people have done, probably did not earn their salaries very well.

In an ideal world, that should be between them & their shareholders. But I am certainly against paying them huge salaries when their companies are on the dole.

Goats, Sheep and greed
It is greed that causes socialist politicians to think that executives make too much money. It is not Dr. Sowell who is trying to deceive the sheep. It is the socialists that have that agenda.

Economic Humanist Speaks
I've read some of the readers' responses to Prof. Sowell's piece about the "Goat" and have determined that many of them have misunderstood his intent here. I too was intrigued by the article that caused me to have this uneasy suspicion that I too was missing the message, until I researched his distinguished background and career. I might add that he did not advocate or condone the high pay CEOs 'are receiving from the failed companies they are managing , but rather from the “anointed” elites in Congress who believe in the justice and goodness in their intent to control such pay through legislative or morally suasive (sic.) means. It is a step that he fears will further “constrain” our freedoms when the “anointed” believe they should take sweeping measures to correct a problem which ultimately means we give into government’s influence over our ability to solve our own problems. Though he does not cite the exact measures that should be taken to address high executive pay, I believe he does imply that such issues are better served and resolved through non-governmental means from the companies’ shareholders and board of directors as examples. Through this so-called “systemic process” to improve the situation in Professor Sowell’s mind is far more effective in the long-run than from government condescending dictates that empirically have often failed in the process and in this case, changing the landscape of our free-market system for the worst. Professor Sowell is a free-market advocate who has great faith in the common man and their abilities to improve their lot without government intervention. Professor Sowell has failed by not telling us his whole story while simultaneously some of us have failed by not learning more about his work about what I would term as economic humanism. Whether the readers agree or disagree with his thesis is obviously up to them to decide.

A Goat, Sheep & Greed
How ironic that Dr. Sowell tells a story about a goat to try and lead us like sheep to believe that the ungodly income of many executives isn't our concern, let alone congress's, let alone in setting terms in dolling out billions of dollars to bail out companies, let alone the compensation, perks, golden parachutes of executives who are responsible for failures of corporations and losses of trillions in wealth.

How shameful of Sowell to insult us and our intelligence by telling us that believing something is very wrong with the exorbitant unjustified pay of many executives is nothing more than vindictiveness for vindictiveness' sake.

How shameful of this economist to choose to write a column to defend the indefensible rather than offer real insight into this economic crises and his thoughts on the way out.

How insanely hypocritical of a conservative ,who would argue the bailouts are rewarding bad behavior, would defend the ultra-rewarding of bad performance of the executives who bare much direct responsibility for this mess we're in.

Why would Sowell waste his valuable commentary space on defending executives being paid millions to lose billions and billions? Sowell should provide us with a list of his speaking engagements - to who does he speak (i.e. executives, big corporations, business groups) and how much is he compensated. Because until proven wrong, I will assume he wrote this column for 1 particular reason – His Own Personal GREEED.

the problem with this analysis
It ignores two things:

1) CEO pay has gone way, way up in the last 40 years.

2) Middle class wages are stagnant (and in some cases are going down).

For some reason over the past 20 years the "superstar ceo" situation has caused upper-level executives to get pay that would go way up. It matters little how companies do in many cases.

A Goat, Sheep & The Economy
How ironic that Dr. Sowell tells a story about a goat to try and lead us like sheep to believe that the ungodly income of many executives isn't our concern, let alone congress's, let alone in setting terms in dolling out billions of dollars to bail out these companies, let alone to executives who are responsible for failures of corporations and the loss of BILLIONS & BILLIONS of wealth.

I agree.....and great quote!

Dear Michael
You're right. In some circles, this is known as "socialism".

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."- Winston Churchill

Please, PLEASE keep Barney Frank and that other shoe-tapper away from me....

Ivan and Boris
I think the real telling part of the story is that Ivan didn't wish for his own goat, or something much more. He simply wanted Boris brought down to his level.

That is so true John - 2:39pm, pt 2
The stereotypical conservative, Republican character was played by Patricia Neal's boyfriend, Hugh Marlowe. The military generals also played stereotypical conservative Republican characters.

These stereotypical archetype liberal and conservative characters have been repeatedly portrayed in all forms of liberal entertainment and news media that has deeply embedded in the minds of true believers (kool-aid drinking liberals) that the conservative ideal is to repress and deny freedom, while the liberal ideal is to advance humankind to a higher order of existence.

When a liberal poster on this board discusses a conservative or discusses conservatism, they will be discussing a stereotypical conservative they have viewed for decades in liberal propaganda movies. In fact, liberalism will return human political and social advancement back hundreds of years to a dark age of the “rule of man.” The things that define “American exceptionalism” are the very things that the liberal dislikes most about America. The things that make America the last best hope for mankind on the earth are the things the liberal wants to bring to an end. Liberalism exists in a very narrow space that requires “groupthink” and fear and hate of conservatives to keep the true believers from ever seeing the truth about “liberalism.”

That's is so true John - 2:39pm, pt 1
It is so true that, John, you have revealed the heart of the entertainment and mass media liberal propaganda complex that has been flying under the radar for several decades.

I was once an extreme liberal. In my younger days I had fully drank deeply of the kool-aid. The one problem I had was I loved truth more than politics. I love right more than politics. In the 1980's I was a journalism student required to take several mass communication classes. Being active in liberal politics I noticed many of the mass communication techniques of mass persuasion being used by national liberal politicians and national liberal journalist and comedy sit-coms and drama shows on tv.

Over the years I've noticed the liberal political support stems more from the entertainment media with the news media re-enforcing the "liberal world-view" spread in all forms of the entertainment mediums; tv, movies, etc.

I began to question why I believed what I believed about liberals and conservatives. Why I believed what I believed about democrats and Republicans (during this time I was still a diehard Democrat). I questioned my political epistemological system of knowledge what it meant to hold conservative, Republican political beliefs.

There is one movie that is analogous for explaining how I was subconsciously indoctrinated to the liberal, leftist ideology without my permission.

Remember the movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still? In that movie there are the stereotypical liberals, the first stereotypical liberal was the character played by Michael Rennie. The second stereotypical liberal character was played by Sam Jaffe. Patricia Neal could be classified as the third liberal stereotypical character.

Democrats plus Hollywood
If dems were to use accurate terminology, instead of
"battleplan", they'd use "screenplay" Instead of "debate" : "script"
instead of "policy" : "special effects." If it weren't for the meshing of DC and Hollywood it'd be easy to see through Washington liberal shenanigans as tired cliche plots with corny dialogue and bad acting.

Regarding The FR. Revolution
You mentioned the power tranferred to the revolution's conspirator's being in excess of the King's and his aristocracy. Actually it was the rival aristocracy by means of their secret societies that were the apparatus that overturned the monarchy as you know. There was always friction between the monarchs and their ruling class. Curously the aristocracy as a result of their philosophy became it's victims. An out come that followed that is never mentioned was the immediate attempt to spread republicanism by military means, Napleon and what followed. Republican government has been an aggresive force in the world since it's inception. The westward spread of the U.S. with the exception of the Lousiana purchase was by aggression. Now we add to that aggresion the IMF, World bank etc. not to mention enforced family planning, abortion, movies and other unwanted social agendas which are it's values. How will we ever understand our detractors so long as we are unable to see our own blemishes? Vic

"Ford and Castro can NEVER be compared."

Forbes Magazine in 2005 listed Fidel among the top-hundred wealthiest people in the world... no doubt THE 'wanna-be' slot of every American CEO who ever fashioned himself a golden parachute.

If you think Henry & Andrew et al did not run their companies in the same fashion as Castro runs Cuba, then I have some goat-saddles to sell you.

Open your eyes - we are flying blind!
Thanks again, Dr. Sowell for an enlightening column. You are right, there's something irresistible about 'sticking it to the man'. Okay, now that the big three has been sent packing for the time being, take a look around and notice the big picture.

What I have seen leads me to believe that Secretary Paulson has no idea about the consequences of his actions. Lets try this, on second thought, lets try that. Hmmm, that didn't work, lets try something else.

Dr. Sowell.......we are indeed goats. We're getting milked and someone else gets to enjoy the cheese.

There is NO zero sum game!!!
Friedman buried Keynes corpse but libtards insist on digging it up after we've all said kadish!!

Wealth is creatable. Ford and Castro can NEVER be compared. Fidel was a corrupt communist PIG from the word go. He didn't "become corrupt". He always saw himself as the "rightful" leader of the masses.

Ford and other industrialists saw a need and FILLED IT!! Nobody put a gun to the world's head and said sell your horses and buy cars. People STILL used horses as draft animals for 20 years AFTER the auto became relatively common. They were expensive and intimidating to folks well-accustomed to tending horses.

Of course horse manure carried lots of disease causing agents (pathogens) and when it dried in the sun and blew around we saw an outbreak of disease. The car has to be service now and then just as a horse has to see a vet, but once fueled and serviced it can be left in a garage unattended till needed.

It would be unthinkable to leave a horse or other domesticated animal untended for even a day or two much less weeks. That and other facts caused the boom in car manufacturing.

Same for electronics. Early radio put instant live entertainment in the hands of the masses.

Agree with your conclusions but athletes and entertainers income are not good examples. If they don't hit or win tournaments or ratings drop their income drops. The execs get their big bucks win or lose.

Politicians are better. If they keep their noses clean they get all the perks and still get to spend our trillions.

Ralph - Get your head unwedged
--
Ralph seems to think that one who hates Pointy-Haired Bosses in the (nominally) private sector and cannot see excuses for corporate directors' incestuous generation of egregious compensation packages accorded these malfeasant, book-cooking, catastrophe-creating, arrogant slimeballs as valid dispositions of corporate resources in any case or situation must necessarily desire that GOVERNMENT slimeballs be appointed to "control" these pathological megalomaniacs.

Ralph claims that his qualification as "...one who also 'works for a living' [to be] opposed to limiting anyone's income, simply because I, or anyone else thinks they make too much money."

Not the goddam point at all.

Nobody in top management brings as much "value added" to any salaried position as these megabuck jobs gaudily accord them. It's not a matter of talent being valued but rather their relationships with their fellow ex-Business School buddies getting slurped upon.

In earlier days, the moguls of industry cashed in on the value of personal investments - admittedly, values that may have been swollen by way of manipulations now unlawful to perpetrate or other measures fraudulent or otherwise criminal in character - but they were not making that money on the company's payroll, and were not able to collect huge amounts whether the enterprise succeeded or collapsed as the result of their decision-making.

Decoupling the corporate management cadres from the consequences of adversity with these "golden parachutes" and similar measures is UNNECESSARY if they're really that talented.

And as events have been demonstrating, insulating them from adverse consequences in such a fashion has degraded their abilities to decide prudently when it comes to gambling the survival of the enterprises they're hired to supervise.

It is a recipe for indiscipline and incontinence, as events of the past decade and more have demonstrated.

Thomas Sowell
If everyone read Thomas Sowell think about what a wonderful place this world would be. It would all make sense. The politicians wouldn't be able to screw our world up as much. The Chinese government is primarily composed of engineers and men of science, but we choose lawyers to mess up our legislative houses. We choose those who obfuscate rather than pontificate. We choose those who sing us to sleep with their pretty lullabies, rather than men of honor and truth. We choose architects of truth rather than honest fix it men. We choose attactive men who make us feel attrative. We don't choose men like Thomas Sowell, because he lets us know when we have warts, and if we did choose men like Thomas Sowell to sing us our folk songs we wouldn't need folk songs.

Roy (IL)
Uh, Roy, I think Mr. Sowell was distinguishing the entertainment industry and the private good/services industries.

Sowell's point was that the socialists want to co-opt those industries that are the movers and shakers of the national economy.

If Oprah's viewership lessens or A-Rod slumps, the Dow doesn't move an inch. If the oil or auto industry collapses, the Dow has a grand mal seizure.

The Obama socialist administration will attempt, through regulation and statute, control those key industries not for money but for power. A-Rod doesn't create wealth but private industry does.

Of course, you already know that, don't you?

Arrested while walking
Apparently you have never walked in Los Angeles County, CA. In the period of 1947 to 1949 if you were walking alone, not just standing, but after dark, especially after 11 PM you could certainly expect the police to stop you, detain you in the back of the police car, to check you for any warrents. Even after that they treated you like you're probably guilty of something, and we had better not see you here in this area again. I did not have a car at that time, my only way from my girlfriend home in Glendale to my home in LA was to walk.(4 miles) At least 30 or 40 times I was stopped, if the same officers saw me again I got even more nasty attitude, and I was nasty in return after a few times. If I had been driving no reason to stop me. I've been locked up over night, because the cops would not take me to where I had just come from where a waitress could have verified I had just left there 5 minutes before. My parents had to get 2 witnesses the next day and bring them to the police station to verify I'd been with someone an hour before that 5 minutes of time that it took me to walk where I was stopped. The cops attitude was well you probably got them to lie for you, we still think you were guilty of breaking in to a home. I've hated cops ever since that, because that is the way Los Angeles cops are. I'm sorry but I was never guilty of anything except not being able yet to afford a car. Now I wouldn't walk the streets in LA day or night, White people are at risk anywhere in LA.

a target looking for an arrow
1-even the libs want free markets, otherwise how did so many become rich.
2-oprah and tiger ARE corporations.
3-oh yes when athletes and movie stars get big contracts every body knows. Even made a tv show about it -The Rich and Famous. They are over paid too.
4-Every body complains when Congress gives themselves a raise. they make less than 200k.
Who is worth more - majority Leader Boehner or the ceo of Proctor and Gamble or David Beckham? Upside down isnt it?
And finally the goat, anyone's goat, will die.
As will Ivan and Boris. The fable is just a fable. It seems the 'professional' onion peelers and rock turners didnt get it.
It is a non-issue but the mud must be stirred.
I am certain of one thing - my contribution to this life, my family and country cannot be measured by what income I make. Life is not fair. The best and most deserving often do get rewarded with fortune. Acceptance of reality has its virtues. Some of you find all manner of people unworthy.

Quisnam abyssus es vos probatur?

Mac Moore @ 118/ Wrat Wrangler @ 119
What would you care to bet that when Fidel took Cuba & when Henry took Detroit there were a finite number of goats in the world?

Why, pray tell, do people set out to accumulate wealth if there is infinite amount of it available -- sorta like sand?

I suspect my Catholic school education antedates your own. Because I don't recall the SSND teaching a 'greed is good' lesson in American history.

My reading comprehension test scores were always very high. Yours?

Keep your pity. The 'pb' stands for probity. I assume 'Wrat Wrangler' describes your worldview?

Dr. Sowell,
I read one time that the envious man will always be poor. So let them eat goat, I prefer the liberty to raise many goats. Thank you for your insights.

Executives overpaid
Yes overpaid and what expertise? the companies are failing. Then they want us to loan them money to make changes, what if those changes still send the company in to bankruptcy? The executives will take $20 million for retirement, and we will take cyanide.

Class Warfare & Socialism
From 1950 onwards Prime Minister Nehru of India & his Congress Party used class warfare, very high progressive taxation, and an evr burgeoning government bureaucracy to impose Socialism in India. This continued unabated until 1991 when India was on the verge of bankruptcy. Productivity, manufacturing and progress were constricted and the living standards were in an ever deepening spiral downward. This lead to more than 10 million Indians (mostly educated and middle class) emigrating out of the country. About 2 million of them, mostly educated Engineers, Doctors, Scientists and other professionals; migrated to the USA.

The irony is that most of these Indian-American immigrants buy into the Democratic Party's class warfare and Socialist agenda and very often vote for the Democratic Party candidates.

Dr. Sowell hits the nail on the head with his Ivan vs Boris analogy.

I know all this first hand because I am Indian - American except --- I do not buy into class warfare socialism --- I vote for the free market capitalist, limited government philosophy as promoted by Ronald Reagan.

The Common Man
Dr. Sowell is right about the propagandizing of America but that has been in place since 1980 to overcome Reagan conservatism by the elitists. The Clintons took it to new heights to defeat Gingrich conservatism and Obama has used the "Beavis & Butthead/American Idol" generation (love gays, hate Christians, re-live Vietnam and Watergate against the military and Bush/GOP [corrupt racists,America's murderous hateful history], climate change sky is falling due to capitalism) to take it to its new level of Marxism-lite.

There are plenty boomers and boomer parents and kids that reject all of this and only want a conservative to stand up and give us the clear alternative. Break down all the different bailouts and tell us why one or all should even be done and how do we recoup the investment. And none of this, "Because we say we need it."

People don't realize that all the divisiveness of Obama and the dims can't be stopped by bashing Bush. This is their "new ideas" for keeping power and still not getting anything done or keep up their old ways of special interest pork, taxes and now green bankruptcy. (Please refer to the last two years of Reid/Pelosi) I agree that Bush has not seized the pulpit for contrasting with the dim rhetoric and in fact has allowed himself to be swept up in it just like McCain. But the bottom line is that there was a turning point that can be traced to this problem and since the election is over somebody needs to point to it.

Only then can we agree on these astronomical solutions. Because all these are good for is covering up the socialist Depression that's coming. We can only hope that BO's blab about efficiency is for real. That means fiscal responsibility that his party wants no part of and will not tolerate. The goats for now are the ones who put dims in power.

huh?
you are comparing apples and oranges.i don't see thousands of people lined up to pay to watch executives sit at their desks and shuffle paper.they will pay to watch tiger and a-rod.

My sister in California
We had a conversation a couple of weeks ago. She wanted to know my thoughts on the Obama election. My sister went on and on about all of the economic problems and said something to the effect, "people will end up living in cardboard boxes in hobo camps if 'govmint' doesn't bailout citizens. What's so special about the free market?!?!"

I asked her what wealth does "govmint" create? What product does "govmint" produce and sell? She said, "nothing!" I said, if social security will bankrupt govmint within the next 40 years because people are living longer and there are less workers to support social security. And, if govmint pays for everyone's health care ... if govmint creates no wealth how is govmint to pay for all these social programs? She said, govmint will go broke ... it can't!"

I asked my sister, "when has govmint run anything efficiently and cost effectively?" She said, "I don't know!" I said, "perhaps the govmint will run the hobo camps right."

My final words to my sister were, “when is it govmint's job to make life fair? Life has it's ups and downs, it's joys and it's sorrows. Life is hard and we have to have grit to make it in this life. Can Obama or democrats legislate life's problems and difficulties out of existence? The people with no health insurance are in smaller numbers today then those that didn't have health insurance when we were growing up in the 1950's and 60's. Those without insurance went to emergency rooms. But, people (fed lies by the liberal media) didn't complaint about it back themn like they do today.

Media creates and greeds dissatisfaction to have a sad story for the evening news. This has made our nation a population of mentally weak, gullible and easily confused "basket cases." Americans are being conditioned to reject freedom and liberty and accept a leftist dictator.

Good try Mac but......
You're dealing with the end product of 50 years of class warfare and class envy reinforced by a purposely dumbed-down "education" system. "Lead" (Pb?) is to be pitied.

When I talk about a point of history or science at work with the younger guys they stare. They are all trained lab techs but their training is so focused and tunnel-visioned they don't have a clue re: history or areas of science that they don't apply such as astrology or geology.

I went to Catholic schools and we had more civics, history, science and world studies by SIXTH GRADE than some of those dweebs got by the middle of high school. Something is VERY wrong here.

There is NO ZERO SUM GAME except in the commodities market. THERE if you make a large profit somewhere others have lost.

You have got to be a Liberal.

Only a Liberal thinks that wealth is finite: there are only so many goats. So, of course, if one has a lot of goats, to a Liberal, that naturally means someone must, therefore, have less. Silly nonsense.

To a Conservative, wealth or goats are infinite, such that if someone has a lot of goats, then having a lot of goats must be possible --- start a farm.

Let the CEOs do their thing

Obama knows what "change" is. It is what is left in your pocket after his "tax cuts".

Actually, I have figured out Obama's tax cuts. It is very simple. He will cut all tax brackets down to 5%. He will then lower the AMT qualification to $10,000. He cut everyone's taxes, didn't he?

Just a joke, but it does highlight how easy it is to "cut taxes" on paper while still sticking it to everyone. Never trust a politician's promise, it is like all those deals with the devil in literature. Politicians keep the letter of their promise while violating the spirit.

Bellum omnium contra omnes
PresidentDon, seems to favor a social condition similar to what liberal democrats are creating in this nation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellum_omnium_contra_omnes

"Bellum omnium contra omnes, a Latin phrase meaning "the war of all against all", is the description that Thomas Hobbes gives to human existence in the state of nature thought experiment that he conducts in De Cive (1642) and Leviathan (1651)."

The Obama-nation vision of our future is a country in a state of "war of all against all." It is a continuous class war struggle of have-nots against the haves to create a nation of have-nots at peace?!?!

police can tell you STOP, and if you run they can pursue you, and arrest you just for that reason alone. Then they can force you to be searched, without arresting you first.
========

And if you are carrying something that does not belong to you, thank you police.

If they can’t stop people who are acting suspiciously (like running from the police), who else would arrest those who need be arrested.

For the past nearly 80 years, I have walked the streets in thousands of villages, towns, and cities in 70 countries throughout the world.

I have never once seen anyone stopped on the street by the police.

PresidentDon Lost In Envy
PresidentDon offers, "the CEO's and other of that ilk, take huge salaries out of the profits that belong to the stockholders,"

CEO's do not take anything that isn't given to them. If they do, they go to jail as any common theif.

Companies, like sports teams, need talented leaders just to complete. And, just like sports teams, some, even well paid ones, lose all their matches and fail to draw the revenue to pay bills.

If you think running a big corporation is over-paid and not worth the money paid, try to get the job and see what happens. My guess is that your application for even a failing GM CEO job will fall as short as if you tried to over-take Tiger Woods in golf.

The talent at the top of these corporations are just as good at what they do as any superstar athlete in any sport and just as hard to replace. In business, just as anywhere else, you get paid what it cost to replace you.

You shouldn't judge these guys by how easy it is to replace you. They're different. Trust me.

Rush Limbaugh
used this same story on his radio show today. Geez don't these guys have any original ideas of their own?

"Ivan" voted for Baracks...

Every "Ivan-Liberal" I know voted for Barack :-)

Liberalism appears to be a 'constant' state of Anger, rising from unresolved childhood frustrations with mom or dad's 'injustices'.

Even when Barack smiles - he looks angry. Biden pulls a string in his back to force a false smile. Michelle...well...

CHANGE IS LOOKING FOR OBAMA
THE CHANGE OF POLICIES OF THE BUSH AND CLINTON ADMINISTRATIONS WAS OBAMA THE CANDIDATE PROMISE.
REALITY HAVE A THIRD CLINTON ADMINISTRATION EXCEPT FOR NATIONAL SECURITY WHICH WILL REMAIN IN THE HANDS OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

Another Excellent Article Dr. Williams!
Yes, to a Liberal, there is only so much wealth, such that if someone has a lot of it, it must surely mean that someone else has been robbed.

To a Conservative, wealth is boundless, such that if someone else has a lot of it, it must surely mean that the bar is raised!

Rights in America
One of the trickest laws is that we do not have a right to drive, it is a priviledge, revocable if you do not submit to testing. You do not have a right to walk down the street, the police can tell you STOP, and if you run they can pursue you, and arrest you just for that reason alone. Then they can force you to be searched, without arresting you first. Any resistance is again against the law. We can be stopped and ordered to submit at the whim of the police. If you want an eye opener go to:
http://www.textfiles.com/politics/wodc0001.txt
and see what goes on in California, and probably many other states. We have very few rights, when the Gestapo police in this nation decide to stop us. Right now we actually have no freedom if the police want to bust in to our homes on any context, search us, and then arrest us for fighting back.
But you haven't seen anything yet, wait until we are under the United Nations, New World Order. Coming to you soon.

The wealthy see money differently...
...than the unwealthy. The wealthly put their money, their principle, to work and live from the interest earned from their working capital. This helps all of society.

The unwealthy live from their principle. And, save a little.

During the first Bush tax cut debates. democrat politicians stood in front of a tv camera with a Lexus in the background. They said they were against Bush tax cuts for the rich because the rich would use the money to buy this Lexus.

That was wrong. The rich would use the tax cuts to invest, to earn the interest from working their money to buy the Lexus.

A banker financed the Lexus for the dealership. A trucker transported the Lexus. A Lexus salemen sold the Lexus. Each transaction was facilitated by a paid employee and created economic activity that was taxed.

Did democrats hate the purchase of the Lexus and the chain of taxable transactions and income taxes from paychecks the purchase of the Lexus represented?!?!

Do democrats have any common-sense? Should we as a nation brace for bad times? And, does Barack Obama know what "change" is?

Why I'm P.O.'d
I read this about a year ago...some of the numbers are sketchy now, but the point remains the same:
If I had bought $1000 worth of GM stock in 2001, today I would have $27 worth.
If I had bought $1000 worth of Budweiser beer in bottles, I would have had 72 cases (1,728 bottles of beer).
Those 72 cases would have lasted me almost two years, at which time the bottles would have been worth $172.80 in cash back, which would have bought approx. 10 more cases of beer. This goes on ad infinitum until the point where my beer bottles are worth less than my GM stock. The good news of course, is that I had several thousand bottles of beer to get me through the tough times.
This week's sign of the apocalypse: the stock of Mattel, the toymaker responsible for Matchbox cars, is worth more than GM's.
Ssome poster earlier said that a bailout of the Big 3 would be a bailout of the Unions---let Obama prove his cajones by requiring the Big 3 to go into chapter 11, discharge their current management teams, disbanding their unmanageable contracts with the unions, and come to a fair and equitable settlement for the thousands of retired workers.
I volunteer to figure these things out for only a $100M cut of the $25B the carmakers want. See you in the (un)employment lines.

Formerly, I worked for one of the largest private banks in the world and I can verify that Jim from CA is right on. The wealthy stored their riches in our bank, along with virtually every major bank in the country to ensure as much of their wealth as possible was covered by FDIC. They all had IRAs, investment accounts, savings, etc. I'm not doubting that some utilize tax shelters to preserve their wealth, but... hey, wait a second, that's right it's THEIR wealth, not the government's.

As Obama likes to say, "I did not vote for it. Nor did I vote against it ... I was "Present" during it.

Did these deomocrats lie us into the Iraq war?

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." - Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

Ivan vs Boris
I see all of this from a different view point, first the CEO's and other of that ilk, take huge salaries out of the profits that belong to the stockholders, there is not one person worth that kind of money of over $200,000/yr, when it is evident they are not running the company to make enough profit to continue running.

But then comes our government who has traitors that want Globalization, to melt all nations in to one World Government, under control of more Billionaires. Our government that did not tax imports to level the financial price of imports vs American made. Of course some nation that pays workers what was a living wage in that nation, produces product cheaper that our monitary system. So it is the duty of Congress to protect our borders and Imports to level the economy of our nation, Congress has not done so.

Big Government Is Dangerous
The fact that police can hold someone down against their will and take their blood out of their veins and they aren't even doctors or even a nurse who isn't a police officer is outrageous in the state of California. No is no. People should have the right to say "no." There are laws that deal with those who say "no," but taking away an individuals freedom to say "no" and dictated and forced and manhandled is unconstitutional in my opinion and should be eliminated from the law books. What's next? Forced strip searches even if you didn't do anything wrong because a police officer thinks you have some thing on you? Good grief, Wake up, America - your constitutional rights are being trampled upon and many of those in political offices and some of those in law enforcement are criminals as seen in the news, so protect your constitutional and civil rights from being taken away and demand that the legislatures follow the original intent of the constitution and allow people the right to say, "no" in a free country that isn't so free any more and will be less free if people don't wake up and stop the micro-managing of our lives and laws that force us to do things against our right to due process of law and the right to not have a medical procedure performed on us which includes the drawing of one's blood or taking one's urine if they choose to say no. This has nothing to do with guilt or innocence, but it has everything to do with saving our civil rights in a country that's leaning towards a dictatorial micro-manage your life and do as I say or else mentality.

As usual-
another great common sense column by Dr. Sowell.
Why doesn't the group in DC follow this man's lead? Probably because he makes too much sense for the parasite politicians to comprehend.

Responsibility for decisions
Most humans hate to have to decide anything. CEOs of large corporations get their jobs because, unlike most of us, they do not become paralyzed when faced with the responsibility of making decisions that will have profound consequences for extremely large numbers of other people. This capacity is very rare, which is why people who possess it are very valuable. unfortunately, the ability to make correct choices in the past doesn't garuantee future choices will also be correct, which means that often people with large contracts need to be moved out to preserve the future prospects of the corporation. Golden parachutes may often look extravagant, but they represent a drop in the bucket, if a replacement with better decision making skills can turn around the fortunes of the business.
Most of the populus who are out there driving the 20 people behind them at the drive up window to distraction while they ponder whether to have fries with that shake have no conception of what it takes to pull the trigger on a decision that will affect thousands of jobs and thousands of shareholders' fortunes, which is why CEOs make such easy targets for the demagogues. Similarly, all the politicians blessed with perfect hindsight, are willing to jump on the President for decisions he was forced to make under duress, many of which they themselves supported, which didn't turnout exactly as predicted.

The libs have transformed "greed and selfishness" into a person that goes to school, spend long hours to improved their condition, then is willing to work long hours and merely wants to experience and enjoy in peace the fruits of their hard work, to the libs, this person is greedy and selfish.

To the libs the person that does none of the above things yet wants to take and enjoy the fruits of the hard work of others is not greedy or selfish.

To the libs the second person is noble and self-less and the desirable state of being all of society should model.

Envy....
..one of the 7 deadly sins.

Did I say sins? OOPS! The left doesn't believe in the concept, so the sheeple therein can feel free of restrictions in regard to their behavior. The left even promises to clean up your mess and then blame someone else after you indulge your impulses! What a party, in more ways than one.

Sorry, lefties, for having brought up "sin". Now go back to your booze and coke lines and forget I even mentioned it.

FMac @ #27/ Cliff @ #44
If some Fidel or Henry sets up a corporation named Cuba or Ford and through ruthless manipulation of the law & the needs of people they manage to accumulate all or most of the goats in the land, I won't loose any sleep when their goats begin to die. Nor will I care if some Teddy or Barack comes along & gets laws passed that make Fidel & Henry less likely to go on accruing goats.

Nor will I ever consider that some latter-day CEO of Cuba or Ford -- be it their brother, son, grandson or some hand-picked Harry-Bennett-type-stooge in a business suit -- is "by the Grace of God smarter than the rest of us." Call it "malice & envy" if you like. I call it disgust.

But if John, Paul, George & Ringo throw a concert in a pasture & the price of admission is a goat, and they thus become among the largest goat-holders in the land, I say more power to 'em!

It's the 'ends vs means' question. If Boris stepped on people in order to get that extra goat, he's not anyone I'm going to go to bat for -- to mix a few metaphores.

And, BTW, if he's so smart, let him figure his way out of the mess he got himself into. If the golden parachute doesn't open, or he gets twisted in the lines, just maybe he'll be thinking he shoulda stayed grounded with the rest of us.

You: They pay very little tax (Warren Buffet pays next to no tax)

Me: He pays millions in taxes. Even an income tax rate of 10% would be a lot.

You: because they have tax shelters galore and they send their money off-shore.

Me: Tax shelters are created by Congress, to create jobs. So blame Congress not a rich man.

Now you are telling me that at that off shore place, there are billions of dollar bills, just sitting there. Who pays for the huge warehouse needed to store it?

You: It does not sit in the banks that lend money to the riff-raff

Me: And what do the recipients do with it except spend or invest?

You: Nothing happens in any economy until somebody sells something.

Me: And if someone sells something, that means someone spent something, my point exactly.

You: The CEOs need to make sure that what they produce, they can sell to a willing consumer.

Me: And the money travels, over and over.

Now Lynn, I don’t disagree with much that you wrote in this reply, but the only place I know where something of great value is sitting with no use of any kind, is the gold in Ft. Knox. All those billions are of not much use to anyone.

Years ago when I gave my Beloved Sweetie a small item made with gold, I can assure the the payback was wonderful beyond the words to describe!!!

Hey Lynn! About Buffet's taxes...
How much is "very little tax?" Warren Buffet pays several million dollars a year in federal income tax. He made headlines by showing that his 17.7% rate in 2006 was lower than his secretary's. His rate was lower because much of his earnings were in capital gains, and not in salary.

Class envy = Greed
Lib propaganda regarding wealth and its distribution among society is based on two fallacies. First, that since the gubmint prints currency, it owns all wealth. This can be dismissed as being unable to even present prima facie proof to support it. Second is that the economy is a static, zero sum game, ie the only way for anyone to acquire more wealth is to take it from someone else. This is based on political pandering and an abject ignorance of the mechanisms by which wealth is created in the economy. Such pandering is another lib twofer which combines the mortal sins of envy and greed. Say no more!

I've heard
That all the mortgages in the US total just under 2 trillion dollars. The news request of bailout money plus the big 3 money would be just under 2 trillion dollars.. Why not just pay off all the mortgages in the US?

Wouldn't this make all banks solvent again?
Wouldn't this give people alot more money monthly to spend on the economy?
Banks and crdit card co's would have cash to lend.
Main street would benefit, everyone would benefit.

This may be a simple solution but it seems to have merit in my tiny mind...

Jim in CA
This is just a quiet bulletin for you: people who make hundreds of millions of dollars are not like you. They pay very little tax (Warren Buffet pays next to no tax) because they have tax shelters galore and they send their money off-shore. It does not sit in the banks that lend money to the riff-raff (remember, until just the past few weeks, only $100K per account was even insured!). they travel and much of their money is spent outside the country. You make these guys sound like boy scouts. Nonetheless, Dr. Sowell is correct that their income barely touches the rest of us in any way. Unless of course they donate a lot of it to worthy causes (and not their liberal Alma Maters).

Nothing happens in any economy until somebody sells something. The CEOs need to make sure that what they produce, they can sell to a willing consumer.

So what do you think?

Thirty or forty years ago I read a story about A Vice President of GM. He had a contractor put some rain gutters on his house, and of course paid with income earned at GM.

The story goes on to tell, in great detail, how the money was earned at GM, so the VP could get paid, so he could pay his Contractor.

Does anyone remember that story?
--
What happens to the millions of dollars paid to company management? Well, first thing is they pay income tax. Then they spend some of it, and pay sales tax. They go to the home they property tax for. And the gasoline to get home is taxed.

When he has spent all the money he can, the next expenditure is to buy a shovel so he can bury the rest of the money in the back yard.

No wait a minute, he doesn’t bury it, he takes it to a financial place, where it is available for you to borrow so you can buy a house or buy a car.

He then continues to use his position and his brains (whatever they are) to continue his success so he can earn more millions next year.

So which is best, giving $10 each to a million people, or give $10,000,000 to someone who will create jobs?

Remember that money flows, it doesn’t stop. You get paid and go to the grocery store, and they get paid and go to the shoe store, and they get paid and buy a car. And at each and every step, the Government collects income tax, sales tax, property tax, and on and on.

How many times must your original money be spent before the levels of Government gets your money, and on and on again.

If someone does not spend, no one gets anything. If the Government does loan or give, or whatever, billions to GM, how soon does that money turn around often enough for the government to get it back in taxes from consumers?

Democrats Love Class Envy
Democrats love to play up class envy and the average American falls for this time and time again. How much money a CEO makes has no effect on the average American. But the average American has been conned by Democrats and the media into resenting those who have more.
Paul

CEOs vs. athletes
The reason we are angry at CEOs and not the athletes and entertainers is that Paris Hilton, Tiger Woods and Alex Rodriguez did not fly to Washington in their private jets to ask for GOVERNMENT, i.e., TAX PAYERS, money in a bail-out. Yes, they make what seems to be an inordinate amount of money compared to the average US citizen, and they may appear not to have earned it, but they did not ask for government hand-outs.

Angry Senior Tax Payer

Athletes and Entertainers!
Athletes and entertainers are greedy!

Dr. Sowell for President
If only Dr. Sowell would run for president we would have an articulate, brillant American in the office. SOWELL in 2012!!!! He has my vote.

Party Choices
Politics reminds me of a company I used to work for. The company would promote only people just like those at the top. The political parties wants people just like those now in office. So an honest man who wants to better his country has no chance of ever getting into any position of importance.

As long as we are presented ONLY with parties who gives us the choice of the lesser of two evils rather than the better of two goods, we are unable to change anything barring a revolution that eliminates all at the top. And I can't see that happening.

Demand Action!
We should demand that action be taken against those politician that conceived and then expanded the CRA. That action should not be limited to civil action but include seizing their assets and baring them from political office for life Every single one! This idea that a politician can use the office granted them by the people to expand their voting block at the publics expense must be stopped. As far as I am concerned such betrayal of the public trust should be a Capital Crime.

We need to be tireless and relentless
It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."

-- Samuel Adams

This has been working against us, let each of us resolve to make it work for us!

T .Sowell is the Smartest man in Amercia
There is No smarter man in this country than Thomas Sowell plus he is loaded with Common sense and a compete understanding of basic reality .
But most of all Thomas Sowell understands what most of us learned as kids.
If a small Rock is thrown in a Large Pond it ripples all the way to the other side often to unknown outcomes with terrible Conquiences .....
like Now with Sub Prime Loan scandal our Grand kids will being paying fore many years from now obviously .
Nor is Thomas Sowell mislead by the Main Steam Media (spin)or Politicians for a NY Second .
What is a shame here is Men like Thomas Sowell don't lead this Nation from any Party .
Big Business didn't create the Sub Prime Scandal .... It was Team Clinton at Fanny Mac and Freddy May paying Clintons 9 men and Two women on his team almost 300 Million dollars in Bonuses after their huge salaries to lose well over a Billion dollars(so far ) of tax payers hard earned tax moneys .
Also remember it wasn't Big Oil that stopped AMERICA for the last 37 Years from drilling for our own Oil .
It was a few Environmentalist and Politicians that made gas go to $ 4.25 a gallon and kill the Car Business . So what is Obama's , Reids and Polosi's answer ? Stop drilling Now for Oil and Coal witch supplies 91 % of all of our energy needs in America .

Obama believes public control of...
...the private economy can solve the global economic problems that public control of the private credit economy created in the first place. And, who has Obama appointed head of his Presidential Economic Recovery Advisory Board, Paul A. Volcker, from the Carter adminstration, which was the administration that created the Community Reinvestment Act. The act that Clinton, in 1995, revised and started the beginning of the end of our banking mortgate and credit systems today.

If Obama says he will bring new ideas to old problems why appoint people who were the policy-makers of the old ideas? Many of these people Obama is appointing to urher in new ideas have been out of the policy-making political loop for several decades.

Does Obama really have any "new ideas?" Or, is the only idea Obama have is the age old socialist idea that central government is the solution to economic problems central government creates? Will Obama's solution, as revealed by his appointments over the last few days, have any positive impact on our economy's banking credit problems created by the Carter Administration's Community Reinvestment Act?

Right as usual, but
the Boris' goat fable doesn't just apply to CEOs and envy of others who make a ton of money. It also applies to what the Democrats did to Pres. Bush for the past 8 years, and continue to do even though they won the next 4 years. Have you ever seen a democrat or the MSM give Pres. Bush credit for anything? Anything at all? Nope! They were so invested in his failure and their own hate that they cared little at all for the safety or welfare or economic health of this country. And now that they have had their way with the CRA, bad banking policies perpetuated by the democrats, once again, it's Bush's fault even though it was Bush and other Republicans who tried to neutralize the CRA regulation while every democrat voted to keep these rules! Hate is a deadly thing.

Ayn Rand said it best........
Who is John Galt?

I for one am pissed the large CEO pay
Particularly when the company in question has a negative earnings ratio.

With a mutual fund in the 401K, or should i say: As an owner of GM, CitiBank, etc. If the earnings ratio goes negative or the dividend is cut, i want to see the guy at the top share in the pain!

It's not that i want Boris's goat to die. It's just that if i have had a thing with Boris over the years where i feed his goat my scraps and every once in a while Boris gives me a cup a milk. Then, let's say, there is a famine in the land and i find out Boris is planning a goat feast for his family and i'm not invited... well, then may his goat die of the plague.

Yo SJ Doc
You have the "unfortunate tendancy" of saying nothing that refutes Dr. Sowell's point, other than illustrating the class envy described in the article. Class envy is a symptom of those who produce little or those who actually are envious of those who have more than they. Either way it doesn't deserve a place in the U.S. As one who also "works for a living", I am opposed to limiting anyone's income, simply because I, or anyone else thinks they make too much money. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett make a ton of money, but also have created wealth for millions of others, not to mention the charities they help fund.

I only care when their companies fail
I could care less what CEO pay is, until the company fails and they continue to get bonuses and ultimately golden parachutes. The executives of GM gave themselves 60 million in bonuses a few months ago! When athletes don't perform they don't get their bonuses, and when they continue to not perform they don't get new contracts. If Oprah fell in the ratings, she would not make as much money, she gets paid to perform. I only care about CEO pay when they get paid to not perform, and them paid to leave. In tough economic times the CEOs who can usher their companies through it deserve top pay.

Politicians and taxes
One of the posters above writes, "Congress from receiving life-time benefits; make them pay into Social Security like everyone else." That cannot be done, and here is why. the fact is that, Senators, Representatives, the President, members of the military, indeed everyone who draws his or her salary from the U.S. Treasury, does not pay one penny of Federal Income Tax on that salary, nor do they "contribute" to Social Security, even though they all will tell you that they do. Simply stated, it is just a numbers game. The source of their salaries is the US Treasury. the money that is "withheld" so that they "pay" income tax and Social Security, simply stays in that treasury. When you and I have our taxes and SS "contributions" deducted, that is money going into the treasury that wasn't there before. It should be easy for anyone to understand this, as it is simple mathematics, but too many people don't.

Dr. Sowell nails it again!
Everybody should stop worrying about what everybody else makes and take care of thier own home. People who whine about what "CEO's" make sound like immature simpletons.... grow-up and go to work. Maybe all our elected politicians should make what they earn AND what they collect from lobbyists public knowledge.

Ivan and Boris Again
Dr. Sowell sees things and is able to explain them so clearly it is a wonder that other folks (read: politicians) can't. Or won't. Or don't want to because it would interfer with their agenda.

Judith
But fortunately, we're not all the same. Otherwise, life would be dull.

Gov. handling financial buyout.
If I understand the constitution, the STATES have more rights than the FEDS...so why are WE, their employers, allowing them to bail out and prop up mismanaged companies? Could it be that the unions who have lined their pocket may become "disinfranchised?" It's time we took back our country. The Democrats promised the middle class a tax break (again) so just who is being saddled with these bailouts? WE ARE, AGAIN!! It all began with the banks being coerced into giving loans to people with no jobs and no income except welfare and unemployment...they were being coerced by the "politically correct crowd"...the same crowd that was allowing terrorists to come to America, take free flying lessons, overstay their visas then kill our people. Next, they began patting down little old American Grandmas at airports and letting young Arab men walk through...checking only an arbritrary number some numbskull came up with. We have to let Washington know that WE pay their salaries, and we're ready to lay off a lot of them because they're not doing the job...all three parties.

Sowell on the mark again....
The problem with the left and those who voted for Obama is as old as the oldest sin in the book....wanting what others have, and using whatever means to obtain it.

CEO salaries and perks
CEO's could take a pay cut, especially now that taxpayers have to pay for their stupid mistakes. Why should they get rewarded with 40 - 100 million dollar golden parachutes when they are fired because they ran their companies into bankruptcy. On second thought these fools aren't even being fired. They are keeping their jobs and hoping the bailout will enable them to continue with their poor management. Or how about those car company CEO's flying in on their private jets to beg congress for tax payers to bail them out. No big tears for those guys here.

ceo pay
Company A that lost $100bn would happily pay the Ceo of company B which lost $50bn a very high salary to come work for them.

CEO pay
CEOs are not only paid well for maximizing profits for the company, but a CEO who is able to minimize the losses when the market is in a downward trend is equally an asset.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE…?
Yes, the next four years will be a long troubling and for many agonizing four years to be sure. Why is it, that politicians' of all flavors seem to have trouble doing what is right? They seem to always choose the “wrong”, even when “right” is staring them in the face.

“We the People” must put a STOP to this madness and develop the trust in our Democracy; to that end:

1. STOP…Congress from serving more than two terms. Presidents are only allowed two terms why should Congress be any different.
2. STOP…Congress from voting for their own pay & benefits.
3. STOP…Paying for Congress’ high-priced insurance and other benefits.
4. STOP…Paying Congress’ full salary after serving just one term, or at retirement.
5. STOP…Congress from receiving life-time benefits; make them pay into Social Security like everyone else.
6. STOP…Congress from ignoring the will of the majority, for that of the special interests.
7. STOP…Giving out aid to illegal aliens.
8. STOP…Anyone from entering this country illegally.
9. STOP…Allowing babies born to illegal aliens in the USA automatic US Citizenship.
10. STOP…The abuses of the welfare system.
11. STOP…Fraud and identity theft. Cross check Social Security Numbers with finger-prints and use it for voter registration.
12. STOP…The “Bailing-Out” of banks and mortgage companies that gave loans to people who could not afford them. Or to any company that has made bad business decisions, especially the Auto Industry.
13. STOP…Companies from giving CEOs and other executives outrageous salaries, bonuses and golden parachutes while the company goes “belly-up”, taking its workers pensions with it.
14. STOP…All unnecessary spending, especially “ear-marks”.
15. STOP…Permitting anyone from having a driver’s license with their face covered.

I could come up with some more, but you get the idea. These are common sense items that a free people should have demand long ago.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE…?

The sheep are among us!
The ad hominem attacks against Dr. Sowell do not make his column any less true. The sheep are among us, again failing to learn the lessons of history.

dbz77:
CEO's are employees and remain so at the pleasure of the board of directors subject to their contract.

It's all about numbers. Even if CEO's were to give up their entire salary it would have no significant impact on the companies financial picture. In a company like GM with some 335,000 employees, an 20% reduction in variable costs is substantial, and can potentially make a difference.

I am not defending CEO's. I have my own problems with the way publicly traded companies operate. I merely am pointing out the reality of things.

Employees generally do not assume risk for profitability. They do assume job performance responsibilities. If there is evidence that a particular CEO is failing he will be replaced, just as any empoyee would be. However, if the board thinks that the CEO is performing well, but market conditions are responsible for unprofitable operations why should the CEO be held responsible or asked to give up his salary?

Dr. Sowell misses the point completely
--
Paraphrasing the old expression about lawyers, these "golden parachute" megabuck management motherpuckers are like rats.

What they take for themselves is nothing compared to the damage they do in getting it.

Or let's have another analogy.

Think of these bloated, back-slapping, buddy-system products of the "Old Boy" network as the detonating charge in a truck full of ANFO that they and their corporate director slurpers have parked outside your house.

The tiny "pop" of their personal pay package and perquisite primer charge is important to them.

What's important to you and your neighbors is the smoking crater and the square mile of bloody rubble they've made of your neighborhood.

Dr. Sowell has an unfortunate "Rotarian Socialist" tendency to overlook the quasicriminal irresponsibilities of the ex-Business School bastiches who join happy hands with Republican and Democrat politicians to gull, cully, and diddle those of us who work for a living.

Why this should be so when Dr. Sowell is otherwise a reasonably intelligent man I have no idea.

But I have suspicions.

"Governmental subsidy systems promote inefficiency in production and efficiency in coercion and subservience, while penalizing efficiency in production and inefficiency in predation."

-- Murray Rothbard

I do complain about actors and athletes
Their performance doesn't warrant the resources lavished upon them. However, it's not my say in what they make or how much someone is willing to pay them. All I can do is not patron their product. I don't watch sports, don't read about them in the paper and go out of my way to avoid companies that advertise with them.

That's how I treat companies that pay executives what I believe is too much. You can pay your execs however much you want, but you won't see me in the checkout aisle with your product if I don't like it.

That's our only duty as citizens. Anything further is wrong.

Typical Sowell
I describe him as "Everyman's Economist". He says in simple terms what we need to understand about our economy and those who seek to destroy the free market. They tell us it is far too complex, and that Sowell "oversimplifies"; he responds that nothing is oversimplified unless it is wrong, and that something as simple as requiring NINJA loans can, over time, destroy our credit system, perhaps forever.
If the Republicrats and Democans don't stop soon, there will be no bones left to pick over. We had better get the simple message to Congress and our new President that we don't need bailouts, we need government out - out of the economy, out of stupid regulation, out of the business of progressive reductions of our individual liberties for the sake of the collective.

Similarly...
"
The issue I have is when executives of a struggling company still receive their enormous salary, bonus and assorted perks, while simultaneously asking the workforce to go to 4-day work weeks, take time off without pay, let good people go, layoff others, force plant shut down days (especially at this time of the year) to cut back on payroll to the Q4 doesn't look too terrible. Much is being asked of the people who can least afford a 20% cut in pay by only working 4 days a week instead of five, or even worse, being cut loose with no job at this point in time."
And similarly, actors in movies that bomb in the box office should similarly suffer, instead of walking away with the millions they were paid.

Dr. Sowell
Thank you, Dr. Sowell. Does anyone even imagine what this country could be if they taught this kind of common sense material in our schools instead of the garbage they've been spewing for the last half-century? This article perfectly explains the reason that I am a Conservative.

Not a Home Run, Only a Triple....
Normally I find myself in total agreement with Dr Sowell's logic and writings. He continually hits home runs, but this time I have to score a triple. The one exception I take with Dr Sowell is with regard to executives salaries. Japanese and even European top executives make in the ball park of 20-30 times their average employees' pay. American top execs make significantly more, some even more than 200 times their average worker's pay.

Despite best efforts to live by the maxim "Be satisfied by wanting what you have, rather than having what you want" this compensation disparity can't help but create dissension among the workforce. But that is probably minor.

Much is being asked of the people who can least afford a 20% cut in pay by only working 4 days a week instead of five, or even worse, being cut loose with no job at this point in time.

If the top management would offer, voluntarily, to suffer the same deprivations... offer to suffer the same measure of discomfort, give up and forsake some of their huge salary and decli9ne their bonus, then maybe the ordinary worker would not be so inclined to wish ill of Boris' goat.

great article
unforntuatly, you are preaching to the chior. I wish this article would be discussed in every civics classroom in america, (do they still teach civics) then maybe government classes. Definately, in every communications class. Are we really so studpid that we don't understand what is going on or is it we just don't care

Two types of Libs
One is the person that is successful only because they have figured out how to ride on the backs of others...the other is the person that thinks life passed them by and they are victims but in reality they sat on their duff's and watched the world pass by.

Either way they are both worthless to the greater good. Can you spell LEECHES?

Amazing!!
Dr. Sowell, your articles never cease to amazing me with the sheer brilliance of the clarity and simplicity of explanations. And I also agree with your analysis. If that's a goat, I'm a goat.

Thanks for the article!

I agree with you, but if all the players are the same color, preferential treatment cannot rear it's ugly head.

Masterful is the way in which you illustrate in just a few words what have always been the four pillars upon which the left constructs its temple, greed, resentment, envy and hate.

U.S. Tax System explained in Beer
Here is the related fable written by David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D.Professor of Economics University of
Georgia

THIS IS EXACTLY THE WAY THE TAX SYSTEM WORKS.

U.S. Tax System explained in Beer !!!

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.'Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' (to be continued)

Judith
The playing field will never be level as one person will have some sort of advantage over the other.

U.S. Tax System explained in Beer
(continued)
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 ( 22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. Bu t once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20,' declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!
''Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too.. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!
''That's true!!' shouted the seventh man.'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!
''Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison.'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!
'The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man (the richest) didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important.
They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

Barbara
It's called leveling the playing field.

Icedog
Obama's team will blame Bush for everything until their dead an in their graves, leaving only their books to carry on the notion that Bush, and only Bush and his cabinet, is at fault.

No mention of Clinton or any other Democrat. They will do the same thing over and over again with no change in the result. This is the definition of insanity.

Great responses to a great column!
Of course the truth must hurt Truthhurts' head because he/she doesn't seem to have much of a grasp on the truth.

I too send many of Dr. Sowell's columns to friends and family that are of a leftist mind and most either won't read them, or try to pick holes in his arguements. The only holes they can find are of omission due to the length of the column. Even Dr. Sowell can't cover every "nuanced" aspect of every subject. Yet still, most of these are simply red herring arguements designed to change the subject and not accept the plain truth.

If the truth hurts,...
...it follows that dishonesty gives pleasure, or at least relieves pain. That explains a lot!

pb
No matter how you percieve the Boss ....
it is the human condition that someone leads the pack. Most people lack the drive to climb to the top and are opportunists whose vision of opportunity is chance, winning the lottery.
Even Rock Stars and athletes need business men to organize their affairs.
To place business people on a level with politicians is a disservice to the country. Politicians as opposed to statemen, are on the calibre of child molesters.
Face up pb ... there are people in this world who by the Grace of God are smarter than the rest of us and are contributors to the life style we have. It is only when business men consort with government that a problem arises.

socialistic mentality
I did not hear this fable in Russia, but I’ve heard “perestroika’s “saying about socialistic mentality that basically has the same meaning:

“If I don’t have a cow, I don’t want that you would have two.

To Theo
I am not necessarily in favor of a bailout either, but the corporate jets have little to do with anything. This is more class warfare nonsense. In fact, the jets probably save the corporations a lot of money by quickly transporting highly compensated officers to where they need to be. Is it efficient to have the top officers of GM waiting around an airport? Do members of Congress not take private jets of their own? These Washington fat-cats have their hands in the pockets of everyone, and many have personally profited from it; and they have the nerve to point their fingers at executives, who have tremendous responsibilities of their own, and tell them they should not be flying on corporate jets. Don't fall for that nonsense. Business people are not inherently evil as Washington wants you to believe, no more evil anyway than Washington bureaucrats.

We need a wise and frugal government.
But every new tax dollar generated is a new reason we will never get one.

Methinks Leviathan has long since passed the point of no return.

Rich families send their children to get master's degrees from the Kennedy School at Harvard, why?

So they can collect an $80k gs-23 salary (or whatever it is)?

The salary is nothing. The inside information is everything. These guys show up in Washington with $100k in outstanding student loans and a pittance for a salary, and leave ten years later with millions in the bank.

And we wonder why we're so far in debt.

By the way, these are the same folks blasting "corporate greed." If they had just gone to the business school instead of the Kennedy School, they could have made their millions on the productive side of the economy instead of leeching it off the productive while simultaneously calling us "greedy."

Well, now we've elected them. Leviathan picks up steam.

What?
TruthHurts, you did not respond directly to even one point made in Sowell's brilliant article. Instead, you choose to chew around the side and take potshots at what you believe the article represents. Sowell's points are dead-on; too many people are worried about someone else having more instead of tending to their own lives. The pay of C.E.O's is irrelevent, execpt that it helps liberal politicians play the class warfare card. That you cannot see this is your own shortcoming. If you want the pay of a C.E.O., Truth, then go become a C.E.O.. Nothing is stopping you but your own mindset.

Outrageous salaries
It goes to motive. Who benefits? The IRS gets 30% +.Since the consumer pays for everything this is just another hidden tax.

In the word of Sen Dirksen, (a billion here a billion there it all adds up.")

Tiger Woods
The disconnect with the comparison of CEO's and Tiger Woods (ect) is Americans in general love and reward high performance. It is the market.

There is just something wrong with the big three CEO's flying Leer Jets to Washington to beg for tax payers hard earned money to support their poor judgement and mismanagement. It is like paying a basketball player $5M a year to average 1 point a game.

A bailout is utter nonsense.

Jim

yuri Bezmenov .... absolutely says it all.

Some one on this site originally steered people here to it ans it was an amazing eye opener.
You will realize that it comes to a fight or slavery. There is no accomodation. Bi-partisinship is a word for surrender or treachery.

I really can't feel sorry for execs ....
they lack grit. Ollie didn't kiss up and Codolezza has more grit than most men. These guys are knuckle-under people same as the politicians.
I'm just a common laborer, but Barney and Chucky can kiss my b..... The only way they handle opposition from people with self respect is to sic the gestappo at the IRS on them as they did with Joe the Plumber.
We need real corporate execs. Guys with military backgrounds and principle, not college weenies.

Outstanding Article
This is one of Sowell's best pieces in a while. He hit the nail right on the head. I've often posed a question to those who favor the "tax the rich" mentality: How is raising Bill Gates' tax rate going to make your life one bit better?" or conversely, "How does lowering Gates' taxes make your life worse?" Invariably, they cannot answer these questions.

Sowell has a succinct way of nailing a point dead-on like few others I've seen. Too many Americans are, indeed, hoping for someone else's goat to die instead of working for their own betterment.

Ivan & Boris (Again)
Once again, Dr Sowell, you have hit a home run.
Thank you for your sharing of your wisdom.
I agree with the poster who wrote, that not enough people will read your columns.
I watched as the unions made union members enemies of the company owners they worked for.
I knew if you did that, you were destroying the very thing that provided your job. It seems no one is to blame for their deeds. It is always someone else's fault. Each and every one of us must take a portion of the blame. We voted these people in office. We allow them to take what they want,Oh,for the good of the people though.
I hate to say it but I believe this nation has had its heyday and now is going down.

Dr. Sowell, you've done it again
Another job of great analysis. Is there any rumble at all of this man sitting on an Obama cabinet, or in an advisor's chair? The president-elect needs to hear these things.
I read with amusement the discussions of whether singling out Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods and Oprah Winfrey was racist: is it racist to point out that they are absolutely the very best at what they do? This factor seperates them completely from EVERYONE, especially the current leaders of the BIG 3.

WOW
Simple logic and outstanding critique of the real greedy ones, politicians.

See: John Stossel 11/26
Beware the James Goodfellows (US auto makers and union contracts), don't summit bills of restitution, for all the Social Security, welfare and Medicare benefits alleviated by their (generosity) in negotiated union contracts.

As an example, my father died in 1963 and had worked for GM for 40 years at what today would be considered minimum wage. My mother, whom never worked a day in life for GM, collected death and full medical benefits until she died in 2006...you do the math.

Well said. I quibble with Mr. Jefferson over the danger of "banking establishments," but that's merely a quibble. In large part, I applaud your sentiments - and his.

I would argue, however, as to your last point, that Ronald Reagan came close to making a liar out of Mr. Jefferson. :)

Ivan and Boris
I agree as usual, and I want to say this, and I will continue to do this. BUT. Those that really need to read this never will. I have sent columns by people like Mr. Sowell's to people only to find 1) they didn't read it or 2) they claim they did but it made no impression which I really don't understand, or 3) possibly thinking makes their head hurt, fact are boring. These are the type of people who get their news from Hollywood movies, and shows like Colbert Nation (Ad seen below Hmmmm) or the Daily show others like it. These shows and movies are clever and funny, but they are dishonest. Very little research would discredit them. The dumbing down of our electorate has been very successful. Unfortunately these outlets are knowingly or unknowingly part of the dumbing down process. I think it should be noted that there are people who aren't very nice who are interested and they're not lazy. I hope and prey I'm wrong but I'm afraid it'll take quite a shock to wake up the sleep walkers. As wonderful and accurate your thoughts and words are they are wasted as long as you're preaching to the choir. My frustration comes from recently and stupidly trying get people to pay some attention and read columns like this.

Note I hope this site was paid well for the ad they're carrying "Colbert Nation" I was looking for a disclaimer but I guess "truthiness" will due.

Wisdom
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.

Banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.

That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves.

Who said all of the above quotes? Our third president, Thomas Jefferson. Contrast his opinions with those of our 44th and you'll realize America's complete repudiation and deviation from the very principles that this country was founded upon. One of my other favorites from TJ is listed below, I wonder if BHO has figured this out yet.

No man will ever carry out of the Presidency the reputation which carried him into it.

"Irrespective of the effect on the economy, I'd like to see them all take a bath -- just because they are what they are."

... and so, you entirely prove the point of Sowell's article. Did you realize at the time you wrote this that you were doing exactly that?

It is this sort of malice and envy that is going to run this country into the ground.

The ultimate enemy of every free man...
...is his government.

And the ultimate enemy of every government is a free man.

Remember this maxim well when men and women like Obama, Reid and Pelosi urge you to trust them.

Where powerful people who desire even more power are concerned, ALL TRUST IS FOOLISH.

Thanks for today's article, Mr. Sowell. You've got the wheels turning in people's minds today!

Boris and Ivan

As usual another brilliant piece by Thomas Sowell. His insights and clarity of thinking are reasons for conservatives (and Americans of all stripes) to be thankful this Thanksgiving.

Sadly, the major liberal news media will never tell the country the simple truth about the cause of our current financial crisis, choosing instead to continue the propaganda war on behalf of Congressional Democrats and Obama that it was Wall Street greed that created the mess. No doubt Wall Street excesses were a part, but the root cause is easily traced back to the forced abandonment of prudent lending standards and the requiring of Fannie and Freddie to buy up the sub-standard mortgages--now poisoning the world's finacial markets in the form of toxic mortgage backed securities.

But not to worry the Treasury and the Federal Reserve will somehow throw enough money at bailing out financial institutions to prevent wholesale collapse of the system. But at what long term cost to the taxpayers and respect for the norms that have guided society and our economy; honesty. trustworthiness, personal responsibility and integrity? How can we expect hardworking, billpaying, honest citizens to continiue to behave honorably when those who have been egregiously irresponsible walk away scot-free with a government bailout?

The lessons being learned are not positive for America's future. And the ultimate irony is that people are now blaming Republicans and looking to Democrats to fix the problem. Where can the bottom be in this scenario?

The "haves" and "have nots"
Is a description frequently used in schools of social work to describe our society. Its as if all that has transpired either did so in a vacuum or some got to "the pie" (which also happened in a vacuum) first.

At a small meeting a few years ago, submitted the possibility that here in America it the case is that we have "doer" and "do notters"- which was met with groans and hisses. That's exactly what we have.

THE IRONY OF TRAGEDY
TRAGEDY---9/11 left our Nation, the entire population, angry (hateful) and afraid (fearful) of terrorism. 'We the People' united in Patriotism for the Love of America.
IRONY---7 years later, the majority of 'We the People' elect as President a person, befriended by and a friend to, a 'terrorist' and mentored for 20 years by a person who stands on a pulpit "God D-mning" America.
So, now do the majority of our citizens pray, "lead us into temptation and deliver us to evil, for Thine is the 'ONE' we voted for"?

Political Magic
OK, I understand, have understood for quite a while, but what do I do? I think revolution is a little difficult....maybe impossible?

Great article!
Right on target Dr.Sowell; just as usual! We hear so much more these days about the so-called "obscene" CEO salaries or oil company profits that actually had nothing to do with this current crisis than we hear about the folly of the politicians who actually did cause this crisis to come upon us! This IS a calculated move to distract public attention from the real cause of the problem which is government intervention! Those who fall sheepishly for these "class envy" propaganda instead of focusing on the real cause of this mess and not letting the guilty politician off the hook are indeed goats! Too bad in this country goats can vote too!!

I did you one better--I got rid of my TV. Since doing so, I have become far more productive, considerably richer, better read, and 50 pounds lighter!

TruthHurts mistake
He must have forgotten that Mr Sowell is a person of color or else his whole point it pointless. A very dull point nontheless.

Mr. Sowell, you are so right!
Last week I heard Naomi Judd say that we need to see if what we are allowing in our lives is working for us. I had been focused on politics and the economy in the TV I watched. I wasn't happy. So I've started watching the History Channel and some church TV and some movies and some HGTV instead of investing my energy into worrying about something about which I could do nothing.

Now I read more and just catch the Internet news, and that is enough.

Thanks for your insight!

A great analogy
I had forgotten about Boris' Goat. It is heartwarming to see a commentary that hits the nail on the head. Government is still the problem. It may be inevitable in a democracy made up of generally selfish people that we turn to politicians who will promise to give us something for apparently nothing. Loans that do not have to be repaid is the current shining example. Bailout of every selfish loser who voted for you is on the current political hit parade. Thanks again for the reminder about the goat.

DEPRESSING HUMAN NATURE TRUTHS
Thomas Sowell gets it right again. Class envy is non-Christian hate. We should celebrate each person's success and achievements instead of feeling that they take something away from us. The Ten Commandments address this directly--DO NOT COVET--DO NOT STEAL--no matter how "good" the cause.

Rocketman

could it be that,
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots.", and soon that time will be upon us?

Barbara
Truth's point is that because Sowell doesn't follow along the curve that if you are black you have to a democrat and if you aren't you are secretly a racist and hate yourself. They would rather judge Sowell by that than by what he is saying.

Ivan and Boris
Duh -- Does the fact that all three of the people who make astronomical salaries that were mentioned by Sowell make it somehow racist? Isn't Oprah the wealthiest woman in the U.S.? Iren't Tiger Woods and Alex Rodriquez two of the wealthiest athletes? So, what is your point? They are also 'people of color.'

Truthhurts
If you read Dr. Sowell's books you would learn that the government launched a massive investigated on dozens of banks in the 1990s. The goal was to determine if "people of color" were being denied home loans they should have been eligible to receive.

You probably didn't hear much about it from the MSM, because when the dust cleared, they were only able to identify one bank that appeared to be prejudiced against "people of color". What happened to this bank? Absolutely nothing - it was 100% black-owned.

Icedog
They will blame him thru out Obama's entire term saying look at how bad things were when we got here, we couldn't stop it and could only slow it down.

Truth
That should have read

I also find it amusing that you basically make a charge of racist against another "person of color".

Dr. Sowell
Another superb article. Too bad the majority of the sheeple in the US will never read or grasp these simple facts.

If you think government intervention has caused serious problems now, just wait!

Question of the Day: How far into Obama's term will liberals still try to blame Bush for every new crisis?

Truth
I also find it amusing that basically make a charge of racist against another "person of color".

TruthHurts?
Would it have made you feel better if he had used Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, and Rush?? He picked people who make more than anyone else in their chosen profession, is it his fault that they happened to not be white??

Answer us this question then, if the banks knew that people would have a hard time repaying the loan and didn't want to make the loan but were forced to by the government, is it still the banks fault??

Castro couldn't hit a curve!
That was the scouting report on him when he tried to make it into The Bigs. So he returned to Cuba & fomented a revolution.

'Prowess' is why no one begrudges a Babe Ruth his salary. 'Talent' is the reason no one considers the Beatles over-paid.

CEOs are perceived, rightly or wrongly, as having gotten to where they are because they are ruthless -- their defining characteristic. No one believes for a minute that they could be effective in their position without a monumental ego and an instinct for the jugular. Lesser mortals cannot imagine them as anything but greedy to the core, and, historically, they have not disappointed.

My guess is that the average American would lump politicians & media stars in with CEOs as among the most-overpaid, least-deserving drags on human society -- people who have attained position & power owing not to desirable traits but instead to those we associate with junk-yard dogs & alley cats.

Irrespective of the effect on the economy, I'd like to see them all take a bath -- just because they are what they are. Whereas anyone who can make me laugh, give me a song, or hit a curve ball is, I believe, entitled to their riches.

Cursed be the Rich
Is it inevitable that when the poor are deemed to be blessed, that the rich must become cursed?

Marxism has now made a virtue out of Christianity's original sin. Once they only came for the wealth of the Jew. Now every Tom, Dick and Joe the Plumber are fair targets for those who vie for power at the expense of those who have more.

Lessons from The Leader
Now THIS is how it's done...First let's start off with the comparisons of overpaid CEO's with people who generate they're own wealth and are there OWN corporations..But wait! Look closer at the people referenced: They're all 'people of color'. Let's call this the basic Kool Aid....Next we'll mix in the cyanide.... In this case, the cyanide is that wonderfully effective Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). Why is this cyanide??..Well, it's the poison that the "believers" think is legitimate...We use the kool-aid to cover the cyanide and we blame it all on some mystical threat that's bound to do us all in. It's called the Government!....Yes, this is definitely a potent mixture. It's also somewhat timely. The CRA was signed into law right before the Guyana Tragedy executed by Jim Jones...That gives a perspective of how long ago the CRA came into being. A noted Economist would certainly know that the CRA has NOTHING to do with our Credit Crisis....Of course, the Economist would also know that Tiger Wood's compensation has NOTHING to do with CEO pay...No matter. It's all put together by the Leader to make the "believers" feel good about the message AND the messenger...Drink up!
