Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Among all the people who are now scrambling to get on the Obama bandwagon, none is likely to impress more people than Colin Powell-- especially people who know no more about the specifics of Colin Powell's actions than the specifics of Barack Obama's.

Like Ross Perot, Colin Powell once had such support from the American people that there was nothing to stop him from going all the way to White House-- and beyond to greatness-- except his own shortcomings. Both squandered historic opportunities.

One of the first signs of those shortcomings was Powell's flip-flop on the issue of racial quotas and preferences. In his memoirs, he opposed such policies. But at the Republican convention, he loudly demanded them, complete with a raised fist, which was hardly his usual style.

What he was trying to prove, we may never know. What he did prove was how unreliable he was.

More recently, Colin Powell sat silent while two lives were ruined in a special prosecutor's zeal to get a conviction in a case involving a non-crime: telling columnist Robert Novak that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA.

The full story is told in Novak's book, "The Prince of Darkness." What is relevant here is that a New York Times reporter went to jail for refusing to tell who had revealed Ms. Plame's occupation to her, and White House aide Scooter Libby was convicted of perjury because his memory of what he said did not match the memories of some reporters-- whose memories did not match each other's.

All the while Colin Powell knew that his own subordinate, Richard Armitage, was the one who had told Robert Novak that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA. Neither Armitage nor anybody else was convicted for that because there was no crime to convict them of.

The only crimes were those created in the course of the investigation, unless the silence of Richard Armitage and Colin Powell are regarded as moral crimes.

Among the reasons given by Secretary Powell for supporting Barack Obama is that Obama can restore America's standing with foreign countries.

The idea that the United States must somehow rehabilitate itself in the eyes of the United Nations or NATO or "world opinion" is staggering, even though it is an idea very popular in the mainstream media.

The first duty of a President of the United States is to protect American interests-- of which survival is number one-- regardless of what others may say.

Virtually the whole world condemned Israel when it bombed Saddam Hussein's nuclear facilities back in 1981. But Israel understood that its survival was more important than international popularity.

Let us hope that today's Israeli government understands that issue the same way as regards Iran, since ours may not.

Despite the media hype that we need to rehabilitate ourselves in the eyes of the world, the United States of America remains the number one destination of immigrants from around the world, some of whom take desperate chances with their lives to get here, whether across the waters of the Caribbean or by crossing our dangerous southwest desert.

Even when dozens of governments around the world join the United States in coordinated efforts to fight international terrorism, the media will call our actions "unilateral" if some demagogues in France or Germany spout off against us.

The American nuclear umbrella has enabled Western European nations to escape responsibility for their own military survival for more than half a century.

Lack of responsibility has bred irresponsibility, one sign of which are unionized troops in NATO and NATO bomber pilots who have office hours when they will and will not fly, not to mention NATO troops letting American troops handle the really dangerous fighting in Afghanistan.

Maybe the time is overdue for NATO to try to rehabilitate itself and for Americans to stop trying to be "citizens of the world."

Major Colin Powell was assigned the duty of investigating the Mai Lai massacre. He attempted to cover it up.

His efforts, of course, were unsuccessful, but they didn't seem to damage his rep.

A half hour's research on Google will verify this fact.

(colon) powell
Like Rush said, it's about race stupid. Powell is a nothing, what a waste of gov. retirement. Good work Sowell. Now a quest. , why isn't that scumbag ayers in prison.

Well said --
Let's pray for more conservatives thinkers like you!

http://TrueBlueAmerican.blogtownhall.com/

You are the Man
I read Pat Buchanan's column and got heart burn. He doesn't just miss the point, he can't even see it. But Mr. Sowell as always hones in and targets the detail with precision. Most Republicans didn't like Powell as Chairman of Joint Chiefs and felt he was wrong for not getting Hussein (Saddam Sussein not Barack Hussein). Most Republicans didn't like Powell as Secretary of State. Most of us knew he was a Democrat plant in the party. But the issue with Armitage I didn't know.

Dr. Sowell - right again!
What a well thought out article. What a shame Gen. Powell has made a series of blunders and exercised poor judgement. Rather common amoung the liberal elite!

It's indeed a shame he now gets to walk with Castro, N. Korea and other such unsavory characters in his support for the Illinois Marxist.

God help us all.

Happy in NC
Do you have a boiler plate diatribe that you copy and paste or do you even bother to read and rebut what's written? The more vitriol you direct at Dr. Sowell the more I know the arrow has hit it's target.

Blame Blame Blame
Sowell, like most defeated conservatives, neo conservatives, and intellectually charged but morally empty antagonists continues to blame the media - of which he is a willing and wealthy participant - and blame anyone else but the President of the United States the last 8 years, along with all of his minions - for today's state of the union. The Republican/Conservative/Right is inept, witless, and beyond redmption because it has failed to matter in all apsects of governing except preventing another terrorst attack on our soil. Is that good enough? While our economy is in shambles (yes, I know, the media has hyped it, and th Democrats over the last 2 years caused it)their only claim to fame is to claim their policies and military adventures actually prevented something that may or NOT have happened anyway. Sowell is loser, defending losers, and baling everyone and anything else, instead of admitting that he is out of touch, out of time, and out of his mind.

NATO/ OBAMA/ ISLAMIC COUNTRIES
We are all toast if Obama takes office. NATO is and always has been a tool for Anti-American Causes/Countries...Which by the way can't Wait for OBAMA to take Office.

Giving up power to make decisions for Ourselves is the Goal of the United Nations...ALL the While Islam is Colonizing throughout the World growing in Strength...Niccolo Machiavelli's "The Prince" (considered to be inspired by Satan) wrote the most sure way to take a country and keep it was to annihilate the entire population... or through colonization ..Well that would Plan A and Plan B. So when Iraq/Iran achieves Nuclear capability they'll be home free...forget plan B.

Colin Powell has sold his Country out and that's Treason...He was Trusted!

Another Way to Look at Islam is through the Borg "Resistance is Futile" was their monotone battle cry in the Star Trek Series..They were part of a Hive or of one Shared Mind with no will of their own...you either were assimilated (became like them) or dead...no negotiation.
And that's the real reality Today...Negotiation buys time to reinforce. That's all the Middle East has ever used Foreign Policy for with the United Nations.

Check out this Documentary Islam:What the West Needs to Know

Powell's motivation will be questioned
Unfortunately, Colin Powell's motivation in the endorsement of Obama may never be truly, fully known by the public in general. However, I do believe it will continue to be questioned. Sadly, it seems that questionable judgments abound in this election year.

Yo 30yearregistered whatever
You must be one of the blue blood country club types described by conservatives, who while opposing Bush on a number of issues, would in no way go Marxist by supporting Obama. Your comments suggest voting against Bush reflects a lack of philosophical compass. Obama's well documented opposition to the Constitution and accusation of the U.S. as "resembling" a Nazi regime brings into question the judgment of anyone who supports a presidential candidate espousing these views.

Powell thinks Cuba presents no risks
Mr. Sowell is right.

Perhaps you remember a few years ago when Colin Powell spoke about Cuba as a country that posed no risks for the United States. He sounded convincing then. The problem was that he used talking points written by Belen Montes who spied for Cuba in the Pentagon for over a decade. She was beginning a 25 year sentence, and there was Colin Powell, Secretary of State using her talking points. I don’t recall any journalist then or since linking what Powell said to what Belen Montes wrote.

Now Colin Powell, a man with a fantastic resume in the US government, whose career was built by Republican leaders, endorsed Obama. Not only did he endorse Obama but also he attacked Senator McCain for his judgment and leadership, and the Republican party because it has “moved too far to the right”. In order for Colin Powell to have endorsed Obama he had to suspend his judgment as to Obama’s association with “former” terrorist Ayers, current reverend Wright and other “leaders” too numerous to mention. Who is going to ask Powell how he could turn his back on the party that made him a success? Who is going to ask him why he justified Obama’s association with enemies of the United States? How much does he know about Obama to call him honorable and to present it to the American voting public as his choice for President?

Come on people
Colin Powell had to endorse Barack to get into black history books. The funny thing is Barack himself is not from the black community in the U.S. .

Obama's Personal 'O' Security Force
Obama's Personal National Security Force

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set," he said. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."
Barack Obama Speech July 2, 2008 Colorado Springs CO
------------------------------------------------
Barack Obama said: 'civilian national security force'.

Civilian - Would MOT include military or other Law Enforcement agencies.
National - Would NOT recognize State Boundaries.
Security - Security for what?
Force - This word usually denotes power and authority.

Why does Barack Obama want a Civilian Security Force?
1) Just as powerful as the Military.
2) Just as strong as the Military.
3) Just as well funded as the Military.

What will Barack Obama have this 'Civilian National Security Force' do?

Help in hurricanes or other disasters? - we already have the state National guard.

Some have said 'The National Guard is in Iraq and Afghanistan' but Barack Obama plans to have them home less than halfway through the Obama administration.

If you think that 'Joe the Plumber' is unduly investigated now wait until the 'Big O' force is in place.

We will begin to hear about people like 'Joe the Plumber' disappearing.

If Powell was truly a good General...
... or Secretary of State, then he'd have done a little more homework on Obama before he threw his hat in with the socialists.

Rule #1 Know your enemies. Read up on Ayers, Alinsky, ACORN, Wright, al Mansour, Khallidi, and the Cloward-Piven Strategy here:

http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/

The first and most important responsibility of the president of the United States is to uphold and defend the Constitution. Now, how is Obama going to fulfill that duty when he's spent his whole career associating with people who've spent their lives trying to destroy it?

Respect for Powell? No.
I thought I respected Colin Powell at one time. That was when I had no first hand knowledge of him. I HEARD what a great man he was and how others respected him. His appointment to important positions led me to assume this respect was real and deserved. Unfortunately I then heard him speak and read his views. Each time this happenned I lost more and more respect for him. Invariably his views were simplistic, self-serving or just plain wrong. Gradually I realized he had been placed in positions more as a token nod to what he was, a black man who had stayed in the forces long enough and avoided making serious errors while making important connections long enough that he was available and non controversial enough to give him that final star and then promotion to the joint cheifs. Political placements for political reasons. No one would have put him in command of battle troops were the nations survival in doubt. The final straw came when he pontificated on closing Guantanamo because the prisoners "wouldn't be able to escape from other federal prisons if we can hold men like Noriega and other violent dangerous criminals". How could he be so uninformed to think that "escape" was the reason they were held off the mainland?? They would ALL, of course, "escape" within 48 hours with the help of any of a dozen insane Federal Judges, not by armed force or a gun in the hand of a terrorist but by a pen held by a moron in a robe.

Change
If Obama does win, I agree with one thing. There will be CHANGE, that is for sure. Change like...a citizen army (used to be called stormtrooopers), who will break down the doors and arrest anybody who speaks out against the messiah, tax rates thru the roof, unlimited abortion on demand, selling out the country to the UN. Yes, there will be change

JAG
Yep to all that.
For me, tax policy is important. In a normal election it would be central perhaps. But this time it is a side issue. The real issue for me: I am sick of the Obama's dissing America.
I am sick of them looking down their noses at working class heartland Americans.
I took is pulse early on, and there was no American heartbeat there.
I was appalled when I saw his pastor, and more appalled when I saw his fellow congregants cheering.
Yes sir. It is about character.

Dr. Sowell
It is an unbelievable boost to read an articulate opinion on what has occurred and why, without apology. I am new to this website, but I have read so many opinions that echo my own thoughts. McCain must prevail! If McCain prevails our work has just begun. There must be a call to idealogic arms! It is easy to overlook that Ayers has had forty years of teaching teachers and writing curriculums that basically disasseble core American values. I agree that we must return to being Americans first, our ethnicity second. Real history needs a resurection, and the art of rational debate and discussion needs to be taught from kinder on up. Never again should the American people tolerate mainstream media dictating the platform and questions for presidential debates. A representative pannel of no less than three (Democrat, Republican, Independent)with no restriction on questions must be a condition of debate. How did we let this happen???

Thanks to Retired Geek
I skim through a lot of posters on these threads but find time to read through yours. Unfortunately you make way to much sense for most of the liberal trolls that come here to spew their trash!

Keep up the good fight! With the numbers closing and the Bradley factor still an unknown this election is to close to call!

BTW: Louis Farrakhan was recently named "Man of the Year" by Trinity United Church of Christ. It happened while BO and family were still active members. Would a white whose church named David Duke man of the year have any chance of being elected dog catcher let alone POTUS?!!!!

Different rules for some I guess!!!!

Learing to speak democrat
Obama mandates we learn a second language. Let's start by learning to speak democrat. View the first lesson here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EcQ03qRE1s

30YearRepub
30Year still says he's not a seminar poster on TH.com, yet he spouts the talking points fairly well ("Republicans want to win at any cost" and "Republicans are a dysfunctional family").

Right out of the Socialist-Democrat play book under "talking points". This false flag tactic is aimed mainly at people who are on the fence politically; they aren't targeting people who have voted for Republicans and conservatism for 30 years and suddenly decide Obama and his Socialist-Democrats can run the country better.

Time to re-discover America
Why is it that obvious truth - staring us in the face -is overlooked in favor of hate inspired rhetoric? I don't know why the mainsream media has chosen to swing far-left and demean the nation that gives them purpose, shelter and even recognition. Thank you Thomas Sowell for reminding us that this country is still a beacon of hope for many around the world. It is time we began to call ourselves American - not this or that-American - but simply American. One who lives, works, worships and contributes to the ongoing society of this great nation. Until we put aside pride in our "diversity" we will never again be the country that the founding fathers envishioned.
As for Colin Powell and other so called Republicans who have gone over to Obama - so be it. One or two years from now I will be able to proudly say I voted for McCain. Whatever else we know or don't know, believe or don't believe about Mr. BHO, he has an agenda that when it is fully revealed and implemented, it may be too late for any of us.

TED in ILLINOIS
Thanks for the update, Ted, on the Chicago Machine. You are doing your country a real service getting the latest news on Chicago corruption out there in time for the election. It's incredible to me how the media minimalizes BHO's tight connections to these white collar gangsters. They are much worse than street gangsters because they wear white collar camouflage. Signed, Used to Live in Chicago

Sun is the one
I'm afraid that Rev Wright and his congregation, including if the truth was known BO and Michelle are not interested in the least in returning to their homeland, aka Africa, but are quite interested in reparations from ole whitey on a scale that can not be imagined!

When you believe that you are currently a "captive" in a white society out to kill and/or imprison you, wouldn't you desire reparations on vast scale. There is really no other way to solve such an "injustice."

Playing the victim of racial injustice card as Rev Wright, Michelle and Barack have done over many years really does nothing but engender hate for this country and for evil ole whitey.

Character and judgement should have been the only things this election are about. BO's past father figure, Mr Davis and avowed communist, his self proclaimed mentors, Rev Wright and Father Pfleger, first class race baiters and bigots, his 20 year membership in a racist church, his close relations with an unrepentant terrorist, Bill Ayres should have been the centerpiece of McCain's campaign. A white who toasted Strom Thurmond is made a social outcast but BO can spend 23 years swimming in a racist sewer and come out smelling like a rose.

All of these relationships show BO's complete lack of judgement and character. What else needs to be discussed?

Debating whose healthcare or tax plan is better is nothing but chatter that departs from the central message. BO has neither judgement or character!

Win at any cost????????
Try $600,000,000!
For the first time in my 47 years of voting (you had to be 21 back then), this is the first election that has been, undeniably, BOUGHT!
Unless The One loses!

THE TAX MAN

A Fraud and a Liar:

_Schooled and Educated politically in the most corrupt City State of this Nation, who’s second Governor___In- A -Row, RODNEY BLAGOJEVICH, is on his way to Jail.
Barack Obama’s Friend and supporter Gov. Rod Blagojevich, is now being Filleted by Barack Obama’s other long time Friend, personal political fundraiser and backdoor real estate agent, Shylock TONY REZKO, who was just sentenced to 26 years in the big house for being an enemy of the state is making sure of that! 26 years is a longtime, and you know sometimes friends, especially these kind, just don’t matter. And the FBI sees it the same way. Bye Bye Rod its not been nice Knowing YOU!

Does anyone see a pattern here, or is it just us Chicagoans. Coming from a city where every good and service sold has a 20-Percent Corruption Fee attached, and has to deal with South Side politicians, Obamas hood,(although northside east or west,it makes no difference), who would rather install their next of kin to vacated posts, then have free and fair elections.

Its hard to see HOW the rest of the country believes this kind of Political Sewage means “CHANGE”___from the political Shylocks in Washington who Killed this Economy.
Do you think the “ALL BARACK ALL THE TIME, NO QUESTIONS News Media has something to do with it. Nah!

Barack Obama, A C O R N and his completely Corrupt Friends do not = “CHANGE” !

REPEAL “CHANGE” 08

MikeR - 30YearRegisteredRepublican
I think the Republican Party is a "dysfunctional family", and it needs help (from me and others) more than ever. So I would not abandon "family".

But I do not equate "support the party" with "support any candidate proposed by the party"
Some Republicans have a "win at any cost" attitude which is part of the mental defect of the party right now. Part of what is needed is an attitude of "Select and groom outstanding candidates; never compromise candidate quality; if a candidate is outstanding, find an oustanding sales pitch to promote the candidate. No tolerance for mediocrity."

MikeR
Sorry, the title line cuts off.
It was supposted to be:
Subject: Powell decided to vote for the African-American
Then he created a rationale.........
My point is that Powell didn't want to say that he supported Obama because of race.
But like 95+% of African-Americans, he is voting for Obama. And I don't blame him. If I were African-American, I'd vote for Obama, too.
But I'm not, so I'll vote for the guy with a record, not a promise.

30YearRegisteredRepublican
Ok, let’s say you’re real. Why didn’t you change your party affiliation after the last presidential election? If you supported Kerry, you no longer agreed with the basic party platform.

What is the “African-A”?

I'm not an imposter! I'm from the Midwest, now living in California. Middle-of-the-road political views generally. I'm in the technology business and am not employed by anyone in the political space.

All the way back in the 70’s? It’s a shame you never mentioned this before. Can you picture it having to defend the liberals who were making that accusation on one of Sowell’s earlier threads? Back then, and by that I mean up to 1 second before Powell announced his endorsement, many conservatives said that was liberal bile to denounce Powell and that he was a shining example of Republican policies being better for black folk. You know, it reminds me of a parade where one of the bands doesn’t march and has to be carried on a wagon. Some folks seem to jump on as it passes.

Powell decided to vote for the African-A
Then he concocked the rationale that he spouted on Meet the Depressed
Honesty in the MSM died with TIM RUSSERT!

C.POWELL
In the 1970s Gen Powell was stationed in the pentagon as a senior general, while I was there as a director of some stratigic programs. We all knew him as one of the many "POLITICAL" generals. That is: one much more interested in his personal career and advancement than in ideas. his service, or the nation. He has not changed over the years.

Powell's loyalty
I used to have a lot of respect for Powell, as a lot of us did, but when he threw McCain under the bus -- McCain!!! not a hard-core conservative!! -- the veneer finally fell away and I saw him for the craven politician he is.

If Obama is elected and does not select Powell for any senior position in his administration (Cabinet secretary, National Security Adviser, etc.)

I would like to rent a giant billboard next to his house that says,
"How does THAT taste?!!"

Jim

Ingratiating response
In making the comment "ingratiating himself to whites" one underscores my point in illustrating the "group identity" politics that pervade today's political scene. By saying that, you demonstrate your approval of the separation of African American society from the greater American society. Once again, I can see no advantage to the African American community by promoting such a view when it runs in direct contradiction to the stated goal of equality that is professed by the liberal left, and is, I believe, disingenuous at best. Dr.Sowell's achievements, like those of James Meridith and a host of others, were the result of a desire to play on a level playing field, and on equal terms with all people, white and otherwise to attain their INDIVIDUAL goals in our pluralistic society.
Ingratiating?
I call it equality.

Thomas Sowell and Colin Powell
Thanks, Dr. Sowell, for another insightful article. I did not put the Plame/Novak/Armitage/Powell pieces together until I read it in this column.

My respcet for Colin Powell has diminished considerably over the past 7+ years, but this incident reveals him to be a moral coward, letting Libby twist in the wind for a crime that would not have been committed if his boy Armitage had manned up and admitted that he had "leaked" Plame's name.

It began on 9-11 when he referred to the attack as a "tragedy". I wrote to a friend that he should have called it a "f*cking outrage!!". I figured that "tragedy" was just the first word that came to him, but all the same he should have called it what it was: an act of war.

Now he has endorsed a candidate who has ties and alliances to all sorts of undesirables (including domestic terrorists) over a genuine war hero.

Goodbye, General Powell. Don't let the door hit you in the head on the way out.

Jim

MikeR @ 2:48pm wrote
"One of the reasons I tend to be harder on conservatives (yes, I admit it) is that I don’t expect as much from liberals; not in thinking or behavior."

There is a significant number of liberals who are decent folks but they are not the hardcore left.
With that distinction being drawn, you are correct for the most part.

When I was a leftist some 20 years ago I was just as obnoxious as many of these folks who post on Kos, MoveBowel.org, etc. I think it goes with the territory of treating your political ideology as a godless religion, having no admonition from a higher authority of any sort to treat people as they wish to be treated.

Jim

"Sowell takes on Powell"
Is it true that Dr. Martin Luther King was a Republican? This does not surprise me because he obviously shared the same moral and ethical values. He preached equal rights for all-not selective status with built-in advantages. He wanted African Americans to have the same opportunities as whites and he was "right" to work in the manner he did, to this end. Now while I agree thier is racism that exists in this country-it is important that we all understand it is an issue that is owned by both blacks and whites. No one can diminish the suffering of our black ancestors at the hands of many of our white ancestors nor in many instances even begin to comprehend it, but nor can we or should we stand by and allow or justify that which propogates discrimination in the reverse as though in constant apology for our white family's histories.

Viewing it as it should be viewed in the context for which it is, Pastor Wrights comments are racist, discriminatory, demeaning, negative, regressive, hatefull, and serve only to remind us all that we all need to take a long hard look at our own part in fixing this.

Barack Obama could have done the right thing and just walked away-Most people I know would not subject themselves never mind thier children to this kind of hatred especially from a "man of the cloth"

My parents taught me from a young age that taking the right path and doing the right thing no matter how difficult or lonely this might prove, would lead to a glimpse of the true wisdom that lies beyond man. As a middle aged man I am begining to appreciate what this means and I think Dr. Sowell and Martin Luther King understand/understood this well.

I think people like Powell have a long way to go!! I'll pray for him.

Colin Powell's
other reason for endorsing Obama is simple. He needed to shed the "Uncle Tom" image that was attached to him by serving in Bush's administration, and the shame of that is that he would have made a much better candidate for POTUS. I would have have voted for him, but in a sense am now glad by his decision, he showed his true color (pun intented) with this endorsement.

The Harm Powell Does
I was talking with a co-worker this morning, showing him my research and some of the items on it. His question is if Obama is so bad, why is Powell endorsing him? I really couldn't give him a good answer. I knew what Rush Limbaugh said about it being entirely about race. But that wasn't a sufficient answer for me, and I knew it wasn't going to be a sufficient answer for my questioner. There's still a tremendous amount of respect for General Colin Powell in this nation. It's a shame he has wasted it on someone like Barack Obama. It's hard to believe it's simply ignorance, even though there is a tremendous amount of ignorance regarding Barack.
We don't know where he was born. The governor of Hawaii has sealed his birth records. We don't know anything about his college career. His transcripts are sealed. He's so secretive. My brother, when I sent him my paper, said that he had been following things and already knew that he was the ultimate 'Manchurian Candidate'.
I've compiled some links that reveal a composite picture of Barack Obama that is deeply disturbing for a candidate who is running for the office of the President of the United States.
If you haven't yet looked at my blog at http://billlong.blogtownhall.com, please just click on my name. If you agree with my conclusions, then please let others know about this blog. The survival of our nation is too important to be passive about this election.

30YearRegisteredRepublican
@ 7:19 AM is another one of those "seminar posters" (apologies to Rush Limbaugh).

As Rush points out from time to time, some callers pretend to be conservatives/Republicans but are voting for the democrat. These callers preface their calls with "I've been a conservative/Republican for xx years, but this time I'm voting for Xxxxxx because blah blah blah".

"30YearEtc" appears to one of those types. It shows that the left is very worried about this election in that they have to resort to false flag tactics.

Not surprising considering the empty suit they have as a candidate.

Dr. Sowell,
It seems like Barack Hussein Obama is set up to be the "hero" of the world. He doesn't care about redistribution of the weath. The guy is an opportunist.

He knows that 95% of the population of the world has been set up thirsty to have things it sees on television. Society has been set up with the wannabee mentality. A jealousy of people who want transient crap. Instead of the fulfillment of family, and child rearing people want more, more more more more. It is someone elses' agenda.

To work a job, or two and come home to a family that you love is far greater than to have all the money in the world and find out your neighbor bought a bigger yacht and you want one too. Or like Trump, to get rid of a life partner, a remarkable woman for a chick with newer equipment, is stupid!!!!

What does this have to do with Colin Powell? Colin Powell was a remarkable man in my mind, until he chose to define himself by skin color, and towing the line, over intelligence and clarity.

He's just another lemming.

Thank God I love everything I have, and every moment of every day. Even though according to world I have nothing.

So you are saying that name calling and insults are ok when you don’t approve of the persons individual characteristics. That’s just rationalizing; and the rationalization is ultimately “it’s ok when you do it but it’s bad when they do it”.

Don’t you realize that the two individuals in question are Powell and Sowell? In addition, how do you reconcile your position to the fact that Powell has now received the same treatment from both side and in each case it originated from the side that disagreed with his opinion?

What I’m offering is the opposite of moral equivalence. I’m saying that when a thing is wrong, it’s wrong no matter who the perpetrator and victim is. And that is a rare commodity, even here amongst the conservative at TH.

rate the candidates as if you were a professional recruiter), Obama/Biden rates very well, but McCain/Palin has several serious shortcomings.

--------------------------------------------

Just so I got this straight I will throw an analogy at you and see if this fits. First off let me say that as a professional recruiter I would never choose to fill any position by ignoring the information at hand.

You 30Year own a business and make red widgets. These are made according to the laws of the land. A new team moves into town and secretly wants to overthrow your company and make blue widgets. But you are strong and unafraid. Time passes and your CEO retires and you need to hire a new one. You have only two choices and must chose one. One is older but has been in the business a long time. He is loyal to you and the business. The other choice just came out of no where and in the vetting process you find out he was and still is friendly with a group that wanted to destroy your business and convert it to blue widgets. But he is charismatic and seems more like a CEO? My question to you is which do you hire? If you know that blue widgets have been tried the world over but do not work will you hire him anyway and let him make the changes even you know better than to make.

So it seems to me that the phrase "Head on straight" has not one iota of truth based on your evaluation. If it is your opinion that the guy who looks and sounds the best should be put in place without examining what he really stands for then you are the misguided one. I am not accusing Obama of any traitorous activity, but he has a great many anti-American relationships in his past and present that we deserve to hear moire than a "I was only 8 when he bombed those places" response. Cause he was way more than 8 when he had his political coming out party in Ayers living room. I actually would like to know what is drawing these unsavory people to Obama!!!

Powell
I was disappointed in Mr. Powell doing a 180 to support Obama. How can he NOT see what this man will do if elected?? His past should count for something..it has shaped his ideas AND his character. It's no wonder Obama is thinking the way he does...look who he fed off of for the past 15- 20 years? How can anyone consider this man to be president of the Free world, our great country?? I wonder what our forefathers would say about this mess. I heard that Obama would NOT EVEN PASS THE REQUIREMENTS for a job with the FBI. How can people in this country vote to have this man be "the one" (joke) to lead our country as we now know it? He has way too many creeps coming out of the woodwork. The funny thing is they are all big mouths until the media comes around and tries to ask them questions. On the news last night, Khalidi, (sp?) was approached by Fox News and he hid behind an associate of his (no less it was a lady) ha ha. Then Bill Ayers who had to call the cops, men and women that he wanted to bomb, to get the media off his property and escort him to his car. How pathetic. These are Obamas heroes and friends??? Hello...what is wrong with our citizens in this country, are they blind. Do they want their $500 a year give away from the dems. & Hussein, or do you think they would like a job that paid that a week or even every 2 weeks. People, please think!!!

Thank you for the lesson in "moral equivalence." Unfortunately, there are differences between the two: (a) one of the two didn't benefit from affirmative action IOT gain admission to Harvard ;(b) one of the two has actaully written "academic" quality textbooks; (b) one of the two doesn't suffer from a "cult of personality"; (c) One of the two doesn't speak just to hear and appreciate his own oratory abilities (d) one of the two doesn't spout useless platitudes IOT placate the lumpen, entitlement-minded prolitariat that comprise his political party; and (e) one of the two is actaully economically literate & therefore not a Socialist. Care to select the one to whom I am referring?

I would hope so, though I really don’t believe that Obama will win. It’s going to be close, but I don’t see him carrying enough states. So many of the columns lately have been defeatist and too many of the comments involve conservatives preparing to respond negatively to a McCain defeat. One of the reasons I tend to be harder on conservatives (yes, I admit it) is that I don’t expect as much from liberals; not in thinking or behavior.

Pretty scary, post #2
I had no idea and I guess I should have known that Colin Powell refused to go into Iraq, I thought it was a Bush decision but as I read history Presidents are sometimes subject to directions they would rather not take because of Generals in the field, Lincoln had a fist full of them that almost lost the war by not taking direction. Colin Powell seems to blame GWB for sending him to the UN with what we now know was faulty data, although I still believe a lot of truth was there just hard to prove, but I guess that is a story for another day.

I am sure that Colin Powell has no political aspirations or if he does he certainly has angered enough people to make it hard for him to get elected to anything but a major of a very small city. Although Colin Powell has a nice little pension and really doesn’t need any of this and probably could care less. In that same tone, I can see why Obama would seek his ambitions but it really confuses me when someone that is as rich as McCain would want the thankless job of being President. One of the things that has gone un noticed, if McCain wanted to he could have outspent Romney or any other candidate but that isn’t the way he chose to play the game.

I always find it hard to track responses, so email me directly if you like, barrym@tds.net.

MikeR
You asked "You’re not saying that conservative should do a bad thing are you?"
Absolutely not. But I thought it a bit much for william to assert that we should all rise above it and accept it "like we have in the past".

Scuse me, but personally, I have been disgusted by the treatment of President Bush, who I believe to be a good man and have alot of respect for.
I certainly don't wish that same treatment on Mr. Obama. I will not be calling him names or burning his effigy or saying anything close to what some of you folks have said about President Bush. And I will call down anyone who does.
Why? Not because I respect him. I don't. But I do regard it as an issue of one's own personal integrity. We make a choice when we stoop to hate. And it scars our soul, no one elses.

On the other hand, I will not refrain from criticism of his policies, as politically incorrect as it may become to do so.

I fail to see the parallel you attempted to make between Gen Powell and Dr. Sowell (but for the fact they are both black, which is an issue for you, perhaps. but I don't see it as relevant). Dr. Sowell hasn't switched ideologies back and forth, which is what people are calling Gen Powell on.
Personally, I am not surprised, and what I said was in no way ugly. It was the simple truth. He took alot of heat from the black community for teaming up with republicans. No one likes to be ostracised. Most folks have to fit in somewhere. And as for his community project, it IS his pet deal now. It sounds like a very worthy thing and I applaud him for it. I think he will get more for it from an obama administration (especially with an edorsement). Not just money, but the imprimatur of the POTUS.
Just the facts, sir.

Pretty scary, post #1
I have been away from Townhall.com for a while now, mostly due to health issues and probably won't be as involved as I once was. But I am both scared and optimistic about the election, McCain is closing but we shall see if he has enough time. We are in for some very hard times should Obama get elected.

Dr. Sowell is always thought provoking and inspiring. I was one that bought the hype about Colin Powell until a few weeks ago when he showed his true colors. Rush had an interesting stat today, I think it was Ohio, but not sure, only 55% of blacks were going to vote for Obama, that doesn't necessarily mean they would vote for McCain, I would gladly vote for a black man or woman if they were not a left wing radical that will make it hard to do business in the USA much like FDR did during the depression, the part of our economy, business, was thought to be the devil, much like Obama thinks and I am afraid it will have the same reaction of a prolonged recession or even a depression. I also think the stock market is so touchy because they fear Obama, the closer McCain gets the more positive the market is reacting. I predict a instant 500 point decline should Obama be elected and probably a 500 point gain if McCain gets elected, I would certainly be in more of a buying mood. Having said that, I don’t think McCain has been a very good candidate, he has been much too nice. But who can’t love Sarah. She came to Bangor and people came from everywhere to see her, unfortunately I couldn’t make it.

Not a surprise....
... I've listened to Gen. Powell interviews over the last 8 years (the few he's given). Stuck me, from those interviews, that he is NOT conservative and marginally Republican. In fact, I remember one interview where my wife turned to me and asked: "why's he serving with Bush?". Good question.

Odd that Obama is trying to prove he's change from the last 8 years of bad policies (his words) and now he' willing to accept endorsements form Powell/McClellan effectively tying him to the Bush administration. How ironic!

MikeR @ 2:02pm wrote

I'd be willing to bet that conservatives will give Obama better treatment if he wins than the liberals did Bush or will McCain.

Well, basically the cops and judges decided to attempt appeasing Al Sharpton and his goondas (there is a much better chance of actually putting out a fire using petrol).

Oh, and best of all
We can ditch those passe false symbols of patriotism and all wear little obama pins with his very own logo- the rising sun one.

Gen. Powell
Look, I understand where he is coming from in his endorsement of Obama. Race is part of it; disillusionment with the Bush admin is part of it; and I believe him he says he thinks Obama brings things to the table he cannot find in McCain.

But he is just plain wrong on Obama's abilities. More importantly, he is wrong in agreeing Obama's policies will lead to a more perfect world. Fat chance.

A nation's leader acts on their own self-interests, period. He (or she) will not act because of a fig leaf being offered by an Obama, or because Obama talks a good game in generalities and in broad form.

That leader wants only what is in their best interests as they see them for their people. Which means we have to hit them right between the eyes with what our policy objectives are and why they will remain so. Directness can never be misinterpreted.

To say that playing nice diplomatically, so to speak, is going to make any kind of a difference, is naive and, frankly, would send just the kind of signal a rogue nation would perceive as license to do what they want to do to further their own self-interests.

Let's remember Carter and his last summit with Brezhnev in '79. He made a fuss about human rights and hegemony - without coupling that to our support of any nation(s) who may fall victim to Soviet hegemony. He couldn't have - because two weeks later Brezhnev invaded Afghanistan.

Leading Carter to say "I can't believe he (Brezhnev) lied to me".

What Obama proposes in foreign policy is a Carter-type of diplomacy, which others will see as weak and vacillating.

Just what we need to furhter complicate the war on terror.

When we are citizens of the world
Our soldiers can be like the european ones, and refuse to do actual combat. Woo-hoo!

Europeans will have to look after their own backs. Yee-haw!

Dictators in Africa will have lots of wealth to spread around courtesy of our tax to the UN (probably overseen by Mrs. Obama). She will teach them and us how to "eschew middle-classness". Yes.

Our oppressed black population will be free at last to go anywhere they want. No longer captives. Amen.

With only one party in power, we won't have to wonder who to blame. What a relief.

We can dispense with the constrictive constitution, and look to the UN for our rules.
You betcha.

Movie stars and other rich liberals will finally be able to foot the bill for all the things they have been so eager to do. Bring that on.

And we will be adored worldwide.

Powell is a coward...
Powell proved himself to be a coward and a pathetic general when he stopped American troops from going from Kuwait to Baghdad to get rid of Hussein in 1991. General Patton would have kept going. Why did Powell (and Bush) stop? Because the pansies in the media wept over the carnage they saw from aerial footage of the damage the U.S. did to the Iraqi forces. (I guess they didn't know that you have to kill people in wars.) Charred bodies on television was enough to give the sissies their way - and the media knew darn well that would happen.

Had Hussein been deposed in 1991, who knows what the future would have been? Perhaps no 9/11? Perhaps no Clinton Presidency and no Clinton expansion of Fannie Mae's unsound practices? Perhaps no Clinton judges letting criminals serev light sentences? Perhaps no Obama-Pelosi-Reid triumverate poised to destroy America.

Put a lot of the blame on a pathetic excuse of a general who got the rank only because of affirmative action.

Yes, that is what Rev Wright preaches, and his congregation appears to lap it up.
For those who feel like captives, I say let's take up a collection and set them free. We could make a movie: It could be called "Out of America"...

Two Extremes
The backlash that Powell and other black conservatives have received over the years is no different from the backlash that he has received from the right for his endorsement Of Obama. The man cannot appease both sides. He was never a staunch conservative, and was thrown under the bus by the Bush Administration. He would be more relevant to the US and the world in an Obama Administration, so he made a calculated choice to endorse the Jr. Senator for president. I personally think he made the right choice. Although the Republicans gave him his platform, they never really utilized his talent. He would have a bigger voice under an Obama Presidency and I believe that is what he wants.

I am a 30 year Democrat
But suddenly, without warning, I began to hate Democrats and started posting rants on political websites claiming that I had seen the light. I started by voting for Bob Dole, because my brain and my conscience wouldn't let me vote for a second Clinton term. DUHHHH. Of course, Bob Dole's politics were the polar opposite of my own, but no matter! Instead of voting independent or voting for no one, it just made more sense to support someone whose policies didn't match a single one of my own beliefs. All because I didn't like Clinton. Oh, he's just so horrible, isn't he?

I hope that my true and compelling story of a lifelong Democrat, who suddenly became enlightened and voted for a Republican, will somehow influence your weak minds into examining your own "brain" and "conscience". Maybe that just might make you question a lifetime of support for Democrats and force you to vote for a Republican who supports policies that would normally make you physically ill.

It does, in fact, cover any social groups interaction with another group. Of course there are individual exceptions, but we are talking about general concepts of multi-ethnic and cross cultural relations here. Even though our society is focused on "individual" rights, we are a single society (albeit with many facets, cultures, countercultures, etc..) Much of our "white" American values can be traced back to the Calvinist theology that the predominantly Anglo colonists had when first arrived here. Now, I'm not talking about the finer points of culture of "white" culture groups (German, Dutch, French, English, etc..)They too faced discrimination in their own time as immigrant groups. This is where enclave communities came in, where members of immigrant cultures gave mutual support to each other to overcome the discrimination caused by cultural differences with the dominant Anglo society. This predates the creation of the US, but has continued on to this day.

Swapping identities....

In the 1st go-round of the Star Trek series, there is an episode where Cap't Kirk is replaced by a Cap't Kirk from another dimension of space. This other version of Kirk had a much thinner veneer of civilization, because in the dimension he came from, the Federation was an Empire based of barbarity, coercion and will of strength, not logic. Many of the members of the starship realized that there was an issue, as this version of Cap't Kirk didn't fit.

The 'real' Cap't Kirk had a much easier time in the empire version of space. He was able to play the part of a captain who maintained his position thru strength, treachery and deceit.

The moral of the story was that it is far easier for a civilized person to act like a barbarian, than it is for a barbarian to act like a civilized person.

The same applies to Republicans and Democrats; it is far easier for a Republican to act like a Democrat, than it is for a Democrat to act like a Republican. The democrat acting like a republican stands out like a sore thumb!

"My trouble is that I see no difference between too many conservatives and liberals on this issue. Both sides seem replete with hypocrisy and double standards. "

Of course. Studies of societies examining thousands of years of human history indicates that one group of people always tend to look for an advantage over another in the competition for power and resources. In our society much is said regarding the issue without having a true idea as to the mechanics of our society. All sides are guilty of this. You need to ask yourself some questions, however. Taking the emphasis on the rights of individuals that American society is focused on into account, what advantage does one party have in instituting policies, and in establishing a dialog, which perpetuates the group identity of a particular group, when the American model is based on the individual?
In my humble opinion, it is to gain leverage, either by suppressing that group, or by using the group as a voting bloc, to attain or solidify power. Neither is in the best interest of that group in joining greater American society in anything like equal terms.
Separate is never equal. The isolated group either has more, or less, advantages than the larger group, and never joins it.

Clarification
"They would appear as well to be conclusions drawn from emotion and politics rather that sociology studies and empirical data."

"They" in this case would be the views of MO as I interpret them. Sorry for the confusion.

William:
MO's views could also be considered a natural evolution of a "colonized" minority group that has maintained it's separate "group" identity after achieving legal status of equality. That is to begin to compete with other groups for resources and power.

I was one
that also used to be a big fan of Colin Powell. However, I started to have some reservations about him while he was in Bush Senior's administration. I really had issues with him under Bush Jr.
Powell's wife has always been a Democrat, so I knew he was probably an undercover one. You can not have a house divided in such a way - especially when you are in such high ranking positions.
I felt sick to my stomach when Obama came out and said Powell may have a place in his cabinet now. What? Just because he endoresed you?
Why was he not named as a possible cabinet choice before? He had not come out and endorsed McCain.

Good Column
Dr. Sowell is right on. How we got to a point where such an unqualified and unknown person could run for the office, I do not know. Of course the hardest part to understand is that, we do know of some of Senator Obama's associations and they suggest that the senator has a marxist, socialist philosophy. Why in the world would any American even consider such a person - Colin Powell not withstanding.

William
Departing from accepted science to place one group in competition with another is hateful in itself regardless of which group is perpetuating the myth. Two wrongs don't make a right, and if acceptable theories are distorted or ignored, the decision to do so is more than likely driven by an agenda that delivers advantage to one group over another. This is not healing. Rather the reverse, in my opinion.

JAG CA
I find it interesting that MO disagrees with the accepted conclusions drawn by a majority within the sociologist community. What I have written agrees with present accepted sociological theories on multi-ethnic and cross cultural relations as they are presently being taught at the college level. They would appear as well to be conclusions drawn from emotion and politics rather that sociology studies and empirical data.

I am truly sick of reading/hearing about the Clinton surplus--do you not realize how much 9/11 cost? Beyond the devestating death toll,(which was also compensated for monetarily) the airline bailout, the clean-up and rebuilding in NYC & at the Pentagon, and the on-going war on terror have been astoundingly expensive.

If Clinton had done his job regarding threats and successful terrorist acts, instead of "kicking the can down the road," I guarantee
Bush could have saved some of that so-called surplus.

USNBubblehead vs Mrs BO
USN Bubblehead will be on the short list if BO is elected president. Michelle Robinson's whole Princeton thesis is just the opposite of what you post and didn't BO say that anyone who says anything bad about the fair Michelle is completely out of bounds and had better look out!

Perhaps Gen Powell can get the new job which will be created when and if the belle from hell Michelle is the new first lady. That of course would be race checker extraordinaire to make sure that the guest list does not contain to many whites. Michelle's whole Princeton thesis revolves around the idea that black's who associate to much with whites lose their connection with the black community.

Michelle and Barak's church of over 20 years Trinity United Church of Christ (tucc.org) with its BLACK VALUE SYSTEM under concepts #11 and #12 makes it clear where it and members of its congregation stand on race.

"Concept #11. Pledge allegiance to all Black Leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System.

Concept #12. Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System. To measure the worth and validity of all activity in terms of postive contributions to the general welfare of the Black Community and the Acvancement of Black People towards freedom."

Under concept #8 you will find the thesis that Blacks are "captives" in this country that is designed to "kill and/or imprison the talented tenth of Blacks."

When you read Michelle's thesis and the preachings of her church it would only be reasonable that she would never be proud to be an American. What really is beyond imagination is that she would have anything but contempt for this country!

In fact he's a radical wolf in sheep's clothing. And an arrogant, elitist to boot. So I say NOBAMA and call on Reagan Democrats, Christian Democrats, Jewish Democrats, Hillary Democrats and patriots to oust these dims before they take our country past the point of no return.

Powell's Decision
Why would Obama seek and accept the endorsement of the man who convinced the world that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction? Isn't this guy one of the primary figures who provided Obama with his signature issue, opposition to the start of the war in Iraq?

Instead of relying on faulty intelligence as he did in 2002, maybe Powell should depend less on conventional media wisdom, and more on his own investigation and judgment. Obama is an ultra-liberal neophyte with no command decision making experience. Powell again misread the tea leaves and made another dangerous judgment call. God help us.

No more handouts to dems
Can we now stop trying this bi-partisan nonsense?

They have improved their argument somehow, but once you begin to understand that prices are an instrument of communication and guidance which embody more information than we directly have, the whole idea that you can bring about the same order based on the division of labor by simple direction falls to the ground. Similarly, the idea [that] you can arrange for distributions of incomes which correspond to some conception of merit or need. If you need prices, including the prices of labor, to direct people to go where they are needed, you cannot have another distribution except the one from the market principle. I think that intellectually there is just nothing left of socialism."

As I stated before, evidence would suggest that that a great many African Americans consider themselves part of a separate social group based almost solely on their ethnic status, and to be fair, as part of a "colonized" minority group, this status has been perpetuated for many, many years by the dominant Anglo-American society through both cultural and legislative means ("Jim Crow" laws, sociological mores regarding miscegenation, etc...). One must also understand that slaves came from all over Africa and were mixed together regardless of tribal affiliation or geographical point of origin. This resulted in a second "melting pot" for those of African descent, further perpetuating the idea of a separate "culture within a culture", with one group dominant over the other. Therefore the goal of the African American community should , in all likelihood, be to break out of the "isolated group" mentality and work to enter into greater American society as individuals, rather than collectively. Remember Brown vs. the Board of Education: Separate can never be equal.
To conclude, the reason for my laborious analysis is to demonstrate the differences between "group mentality" thinking and individual thinking in as how they play out in American society and the roles that group identity, as well as racism and xenophobia, play into the concept of inclusiveness in a society who's freedoms are directed towards individuals, rather than groups.
If we use the sociological method we can see that there is far more to this that two random people with different ideas calling each other names, and that the roots of these exchanges run quite deep in our society, and are not as simple as people would believe.

In support of Prof Sowell...
All readers should check out these great websites:

http://blackarc.wordpress.com
http://www.nbra.info/

And now for the really big question: will the Obama plants who monitor this website, condemn THESE Americans too?

Let's roll, EVERYONE, and get out the vote for McCain/Palin!

Obama, Powell and Popularity
Good article Dr. Sowell!

I was really, REALLY disappointed when Powell endorsed the false prophet who prevaricates and obfuscates as the day is long. At one time Powell was a person I considered Presidential material…no more. Even if he has been manipulated by the Bush administration while Secretary of State that is not a reason to change your stripes and sign up with that ultra-lightweight Nobama.

Dr. Sowell makes a good point regarding NATO that's been simmering with me for a long time. NATO does not pull its weight, even in the European theatre. Let's bring our military home, and restrain our diplomatic efforts to a minimum…we are not the world’s policeman and it just invites more animosity from all the deranged but envious mobs outside our borders. This would also greatly reduce if not stop the hemorrhaging of our precious soldier’s lives and all the money squandered outside our borders.

Black Conservative
Powell has disappointed us for years now. He is angry because the MSM portrayed him as the stooge in the WMD presentation to the UN. He has been PO'd at Bush ever since. This is his petty "get back at Republicans" move.

Pistol said, "As a white person, i never attempt to get an honest opinion on a sensitive subject from a black person, except one on one. If there is another black person present, they both present the usual suspect monolith."

I have posted my reasons I do not support Senator Obama athe following link:
http://pastorraymond.blogspot.com Please read and feel at liberty to comment.

Will Powell Lead the New Civilian Army?
Who will lead the new "Civilian National Security Force" army - not our U.S. military army if Obama is elected, but a new army to allegedly control American citizens after they're taxed to death and can't afford to run small businesses or buy homes or must turn over the bulk of their hard earned dollars to Obama for the new deal - the redistribution of your money so he can create a welfare country with immoral laws that will devastate this country and throw out the U.S. Constitution because he says its just a "charter of negative laws!" and you believe he cares about you and your family - Mark Levine aired a tape and it is the most importnat piece of information that the main stream media won't air just like the other tapes they won't air because they wouldn't want to hurt Obama's feelings - Obama said that he want to create a "CIVILIAN NATIONAL SECURITY FORCE JUST AS POWERFUL, STRONG, AND WELL FUNDED AS OUR MILITARY!!!!" A civilian force to control American citizens? And, he didn't say, U.S. military - he said, "our military" - God help this country if they don't "listen to his words" as McCain has warned you! I do believe that is the same civilian army Hitler used to take down Europe and kill millions of Jews and anyone else he didn't like or didn't agree with him!

30 year phoney
He is a seminar troll. He is not old enough to be a 30 anything.Oh, wait maybe a 30 year idiot. My apologies to idiots.

Liberal infiltration
MAHATMA-MAMA is right about the liberals infiltrating and doing their "thing". But being the paranoid that I am, I'll go a step further... It is ironic that every time I check out a website a conservative recommends, I find that it "has been removed or never existed". I wonder why?

The reluctant general
Some time ago I watched an interview with Colin Powell about the Gulf War. In the interview he stated that he had the nickname of the reluctant general. This caught my attention and as I watched the interview he stated that when our troops had surrounded the retreating Iraqui army and were ready to end the dictator's (Saddam Hussein)aspirations of area dominance once and for all, he (Powell) called off the fight saying that there had been enough killing. The light bulb went on in my head and I connected the dots. Here was the simple reason why we had to go back to Iraq this decade and suffer more losses. This was his doing (Colin Powell). No one seems to want to bring this up for discussion, even though it seems to be very plausible to me.

The End of the Obama 'Magic'
"..America is a different land, for me exceptional in all the ways that matter.

In recent days, those vast Obama crowds, though, have recalled for me the politics of charisma that wrecked Arab and Muslim societies.

A leader does not have to say much, or be much. The crowd is left to its most powerful possession -- its imagination.

From Elias Canetti again: "But the crowd, as such, disintegrates. It has a presentiment of this and fears it. . . . Only the growth of the crowd prevents those who belong to it from creeping back under their private burdens."

The morning after the election, the disappointment will begin to settle upon the Obama crowd.

Defeat -- by now unthinkable to the devotees -- will bring heartbreak.

Victory will steadily deliver the sobering verdict that our troubles won't be solved by a leader's magic."

Appointed Bloggers
I really do think that all these appointed bloggers are telling us something and by that I don't mean anything with far left sense...I mean they are running scared. They are trying to convince us that Obama has already won and that couldn't be farther from the truth. Of course, unlike Democrats, we only have one vote so every vote counts. I think the Obama-ites will be shocked at the results on Tuesday. It isn't going to go their way. And by the way, I too, voted for President Bush and I am glad I did. Who in their right mind would of voted for Kerry anyways? I don't agree with the bailout plan but I also know that it didn't pass the House and Senate until all those Democrats attached all their pork to it. Yeah, some Republicans too but it is the House and Senate that took it up another notch and inflated it way past what it was meant to be. I am proud to have voted for George Bush because John Kerry would of been a total disaster and if Bush was running for the Republicans a third time, I would vote for him again. Bush or Obama? No contest.

Todd
I support Todd in his statement regarding financial support. For those of us who believe that this is a critical, life changing election, it is time to sent money to goptrust.com.

We have already done so because we want America to be the beloved country of our choice and because we don't want to see it turn to socialism with communism down the road.

From Within
Powell apparently turned out to be another so-called conservative to gain power. These people claim to be in support of this country but their actions prove otherwise. The evil from within.

30yearRegisteredRepublican
and I'm-am-Stupid...Do you really think left-leaning treasonous Dimwit Kerry would have been a better choice than GWB? Give me a break!

And while you've got so much time on your hands as to clutter up TH posts, reread Retired Geeks post and do yourself (and your country) a BIG favor. DO SOME RESEARCH instead of spouting off your ignorant opinions. Obama's a freaking Marxist who will destroy our country.

Georgetown, kudos for imagery
If it weren't for the US, the idiots in Europe would still be stuck in trenches outside Paris.

Vote McCain/Palin and avoid the international crisis when Iran nukes Israel and the Big O crawls under the desk in the Oval Office and calls the Rev. Wright for hope and advice.

30 year Republican?
Who are you kidding? Are you another one of Obama's flunkies trying to pass yourself off as a Republican? Go somewhere else with your BS because no one is buying it here!

sarkozy vs powell
"When Nikolas Sarkozy hosted Obama in France, Christiane Amanpour found it appropriate to spoil the party & bring up Sarkozy’s “savages” remark when he successfully ended the race riots which took place over a year ago. When Colin Powell endorsed Obama on Meet The Press, neither Tom Brokaw nor any other reporters challenged his reasons for doing so."
Anyone interested in reading further is welcome to check out my new libertarian/neocon-jingo website, dailyraphirmations.com

30 year RINO
You are not a Republican. I know the tactics of the Obama Machine. You are a hired Obama hack whose job it is to infiltrate blogs and comment sections and pose as a former Republican who has switched to Obama.

You have been outed by one of your own who was a Hillary supporter and has been disgusted by your Marxist vision.

Powell & Obama
Kudos again Dr.Sowell for enlightening us.
Powell like Perot was/is so angry at the Republicans that he is ready to "sabotage" this election with his decision to endorse
"barry".Powell has also shown he is not a "true" soldier who gives an oath of his life for the "good of the country & constitution".I thought Powell was cut from a different cloth, since he had an "ethical" upbringing, but he is willing to be a "sell-out" to the highest bidder....I have lost all respect for him now.

WHAT KIND OF FOOLS ARE WE?
.....DR SOWELL ...What kind of fools ...

.....Would elect a man to be Chief Executive Officer and Commander in Chief who could not get the same security clearance required of a Washington tour guide? ...

.....What kind of fools would elect to the highest office in the land a man whose birth records are sealed and are off-limits to public scrutiny? ...

.....Apparently 50% of the Country and all of the Blue States .....COLOSSUS

USNbubblehead
Regarding your 10:00am post; what is the difference between when “those” people call names and when these people call names. All that is I see here are two different black men speaking their mind. Each is a hero to the group that agrees with them and each is reviled by the opposition; and the style in which both are treated is opposite but identical in each case.

let's really fight
As Republicans, let's get behind goptrust.com and bring the Rev. Wright into as many homes as possible this weekend via their well made 30-second TV spot. It'll make a huge difference with right-minded Americans, some of whom are blinded by the light radiating from "the One". Here is an email I got from goptrust this morning...........

Your incredible outpouring to support our emergency effort to stop Barack Obama is working!

In the past two weeks we have raised over $6 million.

We are close to raising a total of $7 million or more today.

With your help today we can make a final, big push this weekend to air our TV ads exposing Barack Obama for the radical he is.

We are now running ads on national broadcast TV networks.

We are already saturating battleground states with our TV ad reminding voters of Obama's long-time relationship with his friend and mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

This ad is working and can have a powerful effect.

Dick Morris told Fox News independent, swing and Democratic voters need to be reminded of Rev. Wright and Obama's radical ties.

We are doing just that. Dick has praised the National Republican Trust PAC for our "courageous" work.

Please help us continue. Days are turning into hours. Go to http://www.goptrust.com to see the ad and make a donation!

Prominent Black Leaders Support McCain
In a powerful video with personal testimonials, key black conservative leaders, including Dr. Alveda C. King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,

talk about how their faith influences the policies and politics they support. These black Americans state eloquently why they support Sen. John McCain and cannot, in good conscience, support Sen. Barack Obama.

A primary reason cited by these black American leaders is Obama's radical position on abortion, including the fact that Obama voted four times in the Illinois Senate against the bill that would provide health care to babies born alive after a botched abortion......"

Yes, many liberals used to bash Powell
for being a sellout, but now that he is in the corner of Obama and his leftist illuminati ideals he is a hero.

Profile in Cowardness
Powell was a Republican by virtue of pretense and opportunity to enhance his professional resume. The really telling statement was his fear that a Republican president would appoint conservative judges. For shame that we ever had good opinion of this man; his career is another mistake of the Bush family.

Our Standing in THE WORLD!?!?!? If it wasn’t for America, The EU would’ve been formed AT GUNPOINT 70 years ago and its National Anthem would’ve been “Hail Deutschland”. 100,000+ US soldiers DIED in Europe defending the freedom of these UNGRATEFUL, Grape Stomping, Snail Eaters! THAT IS WHY we are disliked in Europe. Because they didn’t have the guts or ability to defend themselves! The Maginot Line! LMAO! HIC! Wait until The Muslim Population of Europe rises up and overthrows European Governments. I WONDER WHO they will come crying to for help?!?!?! I say LET THEM ROT!

Powell OBVIOUSLY had disagreements with some Bush Administration policies/appointees/actions with is nothing new and which he is entitled to have. But to let folks twist in the wind during The Plame Trial when HE KNEW who exposed her is lower than a Snake’s Belly in a Wagon Rut. I hope whatever Powell gout out his actions was worth it, because he will be paying for it the rest of his life.

Happy Halloween

Powell's endorsement, who cares?
Colin Powell's endorsement of BHO hold NO WATER for those of us who understand perfectly what Powell is all about. He is a RHINO, not a real Republican and as such has no credibility with the real conservatives in this country. Anything Powell has to say, write or express in ANY form, is ignored by those of us who follow politics closely and understand the ramifications of enabling a socialist/Marxist to occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, WITHOUT producing a resume, not answering the hard questions, and not being honest in his fundraising and his associations. IF Obama gets to the White House, Powell will be on tv howling for his freedoms to be returned once the Big Zero starts stripping them away one at a time.

Voice of the people.

If you alreday haven't seen it, here's a short but amazing video that sky-rocketed to the very top of the most watched on YouTube. As of now, over 11 million hits... and counting.

It is simply entitled, Dear Mr. Obama.

This may also become one of the most forwarded videos of this entire election.

The mantra of "Bush = Mistake"
I am sorry, but to the people who keep spouting this here and elsewhere, I feel a little but like the boy in the Emperor's New Clothes. I do not believe that electing President George W. Bush was a mistake. Did he make mistakes? Of course. However, I think John Kerry (and Al Gore! *SHUDDER!*) would have been FAR worse.

Did George Bush compromise on certain Conservative principles? I think he did. But I also think that being POTUS is a job that makes it very hard to keep principles in every circumstance.

Far more important to me, is that he kept the USA and us safe. I really do believe that history will tell that story, though it is not a popular story right now. And the problem with it, is that it is very hard to prove a negative.

And in a similar vain, I do not think a John McCain presidency will be perfect. I just think it is far better than the alternative. I do not hate Senator Obama (there is so much hate and anger coming from the many people on the left. I don't completely understand it. I think regardless of our opinions, love, kindness and forgiveness works better and is better for our individual health, as well as social health). I just think he is the wrong man for the job.

The UN as a standardiser of behaviour?
Why should the US "rehabilitate itself" in the eyes of the Useless Numpties--the organisation was a failure from the get-go, formed on the wreckage of another failed org (Lame Numpties) without learning anything from the former's errors!

For Nickel, AJ and Tommy: as a Canuck (only naturalised to US in 2005), I had seen a Perot-esque man (Mel Hurtig) run for Canada PM in 1993; the number of seats Hurtig got was...ZERO! Also, if Powell is looking for bh0 to give him a cabinet appointment, he'd better check how close the "bus" (actually, it'll now be a locomotive) is--as he WILL get runover.

30YearRegisteredRepublican
I agree with you: voting for POTUS should be like a job interview, with resumes and references used to evaluate the candidates:
On one hand, you have a former military leader, with 20 years in Congress, with an established track record (like or dislike).
On the other, you have an empty resume, with no executive experience at all, with questionable references at best, with less time in Congress than his campaign.
Easy decision for me. BTW, I don't hold any links to the prior person that held the job that I am interviewing for. His mistakes are his own.
Speaking of resumes: would any board of directors of any medium or large company hire Obama for CEO, based on his current resume? I've done a bit of hiring in the past, and I think not. He may, based on his Ivy League education, get the job as a Department Head. Then, if his decision-making warrants it, may later be promoted to C-Level status. No way does a company bet its existence on a candidate with no executive experience. But we may elect him to the Presidency? Amazing.

"Group Mentality"
Those in the African-American community that call those who seek their own path 'sell-outs', 'uncle Toms', and 'house ni**ers', are missing the point about what America is all about. The American story is a story of individuality, and the INDIVIDUAL pursuit of prosperity and happiness. Although recent sociological studies have indicated that immigrant groups that form 'enclave communities' have an easier time assimilating into American society, generally due to the ability of these communities to provide mutual support to those individuals within them (because, obviously they all share a common cultural background, language, etc...)the next generation of individuals within these communities, having become acclimated to our American society, move out as individual, successful American citizens. This building of 'enclave communities', of course doesn't exactly fit the traditional American assimilation model, but has proven to be very effective in creating INDIVIDUAL Americans out of various ethnic groups. The real struggle for African Americans, and others of so called 'colonized minority' groups (groups who, at one time or another, were deliberately isolated from greater American society through legislative or other structured means)to break out of their centralized group, and take their rightful place as INDIVIDUALS within our society. Those who have successfully done so should receive the highest praise because it is they who have truly shown that there is no difference between themselves and any other INDIVIDUAL American.
Dr. Sowell, I salute you. You are a credit to the greatness of America and the INDIVIDUAL pursuit of happiness.

Powell
It is about time somebody with national importance reminds americans what Powell did to Scooter Libby. Go back to 2003 or '04 and listen to what Newt Gingrich said about the State Department undermining President Bush's foreign policy under Sec. Powell.

Colin Powell has a lot to answer for in his tenure at the state dept.

Hey Tommy post #31 and AJ above at #55
I saw aj's post and went back and read Tommy's post at #31 and I agree with both of you 100%. I too was a very loyal and strong supporter of Perot and voted for him in both elections. We all are guilty of helping the Clintons gain more power than either of those two bozos should ever have had. It is sad that an attempt at trying to save this great country by electing a third party candidate that looked to be an honest broker for this countries future turned out so badly.
That said, and while I also think George Bush jr has been a great president despite the bs from the media and the left, for today I am pushing 100% for McCain Palin. Obama will be a mistake my grandchildren will still be paying for long after I am gone and forgotten.

Has Been? or Never Was?
Prior to his endorsement of Obama, when was the last time you saw Powell?

A man of limited ability, his halo had faded and he had marched on to a well deserved oblivion. People who once hung on his every word now ignored him.

The Obama endorsement was Powell's attempt for one last day in the sun, one last experience of public adulation. His efforts were met with yawns. The left flashed his name for a few seconds and then let him go.

Good bye General, you will not be missed.

Obama Chaos
Edwin Vieira asks "Why doesn't Obama prove, with conclusive
documentary evidence, that he is 'a natural born Citizen' of the
United States who has not renounced his American citizenship?" Because
of his failure, America is potentially facing the gravest
constitutional crisis in her history. "The potential for chaos, both
domestically and internationally, arising out of this systemic
uncertainly is breathtaking." http://www.newswithviews.com/Vieira/edwin84.htm
It is crucial that people vote against Obama unless he produces proof
that he is eligible to be president. Dr. Vieira says "If Obama turns
out to be nothing more than an usurper who has fraudulently seized
control of the Presidency, not only will the Constitution have been
egregiously flouted, but also this whole country could be, likely will
be, destroyed as a consequence."

Powell is a shallow opportunist
one can only surmise that Powell made this decision based soley on political opportunism. the white republican party became a drag on his "brand" so now he's switching sides.....looking for redemption in the eyes of the lib media and folks of color.

but all is not lost for conservatives. with the defection of Powell and others the circle has become smaller. we now know who will stand and fight against the socialist democrats and their allies in the press.

Word to the republicans: FIGHT FIGHT OBSTRUCT OBSTRUCT. USE EVERY DIRTY TRICK THE SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS USED THE LAST 8 YRS

Tommy Post #31
My sentiments, EXACTLY! Thanks for saving me some time, fellow Michigander!

I agree with Trulib
Powell is making an obvious move to become part of an Obama administration and frankly if Obama does win that is probably better for the US than some other nutjob Obama might appoint i.e. see most of the Clinton appointmentes Madeliene Albright for one. Powell is full of it when he claims Obama is the best candidate but it is better to have a competent leader like Powell in the Obama adminstration than another yahoo. Face it if this Obama wins we are all in for a lot of very tough times and we all are going to need every bit of help we can get.

The Brits have a way with words...

'You have to pinch yourself - a Marxist radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshiped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, Jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists and Chicago mobsters, is on the verge of becoming President of the United States. And apparently it's considered impolite to say so.'

- Melanie Philips, The Spectator ( UK ) 10/14/08

Big Belly
makes some good points.

Colin Powell is duplicitous and an opportunist. He was a "white" Republican as long as it served his personal agenda; now he's black again and in the hood with Obama.

It would really ruin Powell's day if Obama lost the race, wouldn't it? I'd love to see that. Who would he suck up to then?

WTF?
Powell, a respected soldier turned out to be a "moderate" when it came to politics. His justification for supporting Yobamma was to restore our standing in world opinion. To me, anyone who as POTUS would subjugate US interests to popularity among Euro elitists is absolutely unqualified for the job.

I have lost all respect
for Colin Powell.

Thanks for the link!
To ImWithStupid,
I appreciate the link.

30YearRepublican
Have you looked at Obama's record, heard his speeches? Look at the money backing him? He has no respect for the Constitution of the United States. He has no practical work experience. All he has is associations.

Great article Mr. Sowell
Your last statement captured my attention, For Americans to stop trying to be "citizens of the world". What was one of the reasons for the war with Saddam Hussein? he wanted to attack Israel, right? What is our present threat with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? he also wants to destroy Israel. If becoming "citizens of the world" means to align with the rest of those who are not in alliance with Israel, I don't think that would be a good idea. Ezekiel 12:3 says "And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it". Obama has a lot of anti-Israel friends. As they say "birds of a feather flock together" and as "Joe the plumber says "a vote for Obama is a vote against Israel". If Obama is elected will he fullfill prophecy when it says "all the people of the earth (U.S.A.included) be gathered together against it"?

Perhaps we should consider .....
Perhaps we should consider abandoning the UN and NATO and going it on our own because with the UN & NATO it appears we are already alone with them. So why keep pretending? Just do it!

Thomas Sowell for President
This guy get it!

Colin Powell is a modern day Benedict Arnold and should be shunned by all self-repecting conservatives. Let him simmer in the Obama stew, and may history so record.

Go Thomas, go!!!

Re: Turncoat?!!!
Powell in my opinion lost alot of respect by doing this because he acted on emotion and also on anger!! Basically, "You made me mad and would play the way I wanted and I will take my toys and go home!!" This is what it looks like to alot of people Mr. Turncoat!!!

For conservatives a person is a person no matter their race, religion or ethniciy.

True, and that's why some of my political action money goes here:

M Sederoff fellow Hoosier says:
He may be the last such president we will ever know.

True, but we could end up with such a woman POTUS like Mrs. Palin in 2012!

TruthHurts?
I don't SEE. If what you are saying were TRUE, then Thomas Sowell has been preparing for this moment for over 30 years. Thomas Sowell has always stood for conservative principles in all his writings. He is not hung up on ethinicity like most people are.

For liberals its impossible to separate ethnicity from the person. If they are black they have to be for Obama or else they are putting up a front. Which is oxymoronic to whole liberal-diversity politically correct movement.

For conservatives a person is a person no matter their race, religion or ethniciy. They are judged only on their character and actions....hmmm...where have you heard that before? I think you know.

Thomas Sowell looks at a person, their actions and their character. He then writes about it. I find his writings insightful and factual.

Gee
Remember when those bad old liberals used to castigate black folks like Sowell for being conservatives? They used to call them names and associate their political leanings with all sorts of nasty ulterior motives. Yes sir, those liberals sure are bad. They have the double standards and hypocrisy that the good folks at TH are so quick to point out. It’s a good thing that conservative hold the moral high ground. If they didn’t, their behaving exactly like liberals might be construed as unscrupulous.

tommy
YOU ARE ABOLUSTELY RIGHT!

Don't you just love the way liberals have to masquerade as conservatives to make a point?

I'm surprised they don't wear white bed sheets over their heads.

The citizens of the world
crap has always turned my stomach. If America fails as a nation, it will be because we tried to imitate countries that are a lot worse off than we are.

When I was growing up, I lived in an area of our town that was considered elite. My father worked for the post office, but he was frugal and a saver. He eventually saved enough money to buy a home in a neighborhood where we didn’t really fit in. I went to a school that was so elite, it was eventually turned into a private school years after I graduated.

Because my folks didn’t belong to the country club, I didn’t have great clothes or get to take ballet lessons, I was the target of much ridicule. I was mocked and teased relentlessly by my school mates. I didn’t know it at the time, but this turned out to be a blessing. As a result, I am an independent-minded adult who has never had to bend to popular opinion. I simply don’t care what others think of me, and it has given me freedom as an adult that other “man-pleasing” acquaintances don’t have.

George W. Bush did some things that I disagreed with, but I always admired the way he stuck to his guns. This is one of the most important qualities a president can have. It makes the difference between being a leader or being a follow of opinion polls. GWB is a tough, resilient and courageous man.

He may be the last such president we will ever know.

30 year republican
It don't look like you'll amke it to 31. Thank you.

Polly fellow Hoosier says:
30Year yadda yadda yadda
There would have been one benefit to firing Bush in '04: there would have been no one to blame for the collapse of Fannie & Freddie and the subsequent chaos except the Dems.

Yup, Yup. Which in fact can be laid on the dems anyways. Proven by all the videos of frans, dodd and the likes. Not to mention just looking at who benefited the most by the political contributions of which, Obambi received the most! With franks and dodd close behind!

A little poem
Twas the night before election
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi'
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM
THEN GET OUT AND VOTE!

False Identification
Whenever someone feels the need to identify themselves as a "lifetime staunch conservative" or "hardcore Republican" or something like that, you know what follows is going to be a complete line of b/s. As an example, "I'm a long-time staunch Republican, who has never voted for a Democrat ever, but I just love this ultra-liberal guy the Dems got running this year and he's got my vote." Yeah, right.

30Year yadda yadda yadda
There would have been one benefit to firing Bush in '04: there would have been no one to blame for the collapse of Fannie & Freddie and the subsequent chaos except the Dems.

To ThirtyYearRegisteredWhatever
I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004. Gues what, I'd vote for him again in a heartbeat over these two clowns. He hasn't been perfect, but he's been a good president. You see, I don't buy the spoonfed drivel the media is handing out. Bush is a better president than Clinton was and he is a better president than his father was and he is a better president than Obama or McCain would be. Got that? The only mistake I'll admit to was voting for Ross Perot back in the day, a mistake which others made that helped get Clinton in the White House. We're paying for that mistake to this day.

to '30 year RINO'
If BS were a penny a ton I expect you would have at least 100 tons in your drive. Why can you just not admit you are a turncoat like Powell who always went with the flow. He never could have made General if he hadn't and he demeans the excellent men who now serve by his actions. But he at least has an excuse "Alma made me do it", whats yours

Colin Powell
There was a time I would have voted for him for the Presidency! That time is past! I could not vote for him now, even for Dog Catcher!

leob

Thank you again
Infortuantely it is preaching to the choir, most of us reading this have not the slightest intention of voting for "the one". The more we hear the more we grow concerned.
I used to admire Colin Powell, but when he tried to fudge out of responsibility for his part in the Iraq war, that admiration began to crumble, then when he was willing to let Libby take a fall for the Plame affair, it finished. I don't feel Bush helped his image in the plame affair either. I also think the Iraq war was the right thing to do, and I think Powell would have served himself well to have stood by his decision.

Jim #23
Agreed and I would bet he was one of many who was whispering into Bush 1's ear. What will the world think?
Mr. Sowell's other good point is at our expense, most European ball less nations have let us carry the load in Europe since d-day and all that time most have stood, took our money and help, talking smack about us all the while.

Powell, the wimp
Colin Powell turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments of this era. I guess he is just a man after all. The best thing he did was to exit the stage when it was time to go. What he is hoping to achieve with his reemergence and Obama endorsement is anybody's guess -- a cabinet post, perhaps? His apparent intelligence once put him on a level above the obvious, illuminati power-grubbing of an Obama. Now I wonder.

big little man
Powell is such a large, self-assured and imposing man that it's sometimes hard to see how very small he is.

In another era, his behavior during the bogus Plame affair would have been widely condemned. Unfortunately, we're not IN "another era." And the propaganda of The Left, as echoed and thus amplified by the MSM, gave him cover.

30YearRegisteredRepublican
I am with you.

Do you have ANY idea of how many times a day we read people on here claiming to be something they are not?
Many conservatives on here have said peso george has made mistakes. I think you ought to be more honest with yourself and seek help for your BDS.

Obama, Powell, etc.
YA LEFT OFF Idiot Powell's role as architect of our BLOWING IT in the first Gulf War (1991) and not going all the way to Baghdad and hanging Saddam at that time when we had the rest of the world with us and participating. I said then and still do, it was the biggest military blunder in the 20th century, only eclipsed by Hitler's policy and einzatzgruppen murdering the Russian peasants behind the advances of the Wehrmacht. It literally cost the Nazis WINNING WORLD WAR II !!!

I SCOFF AND SNEER anytime I hear anyone refer to Powell as a "soldier." The man is a self-serving, inscrutable moron at best.

Loren
I support Obama. Not a difficult choice if your head's clear.

Most of the posts on this forum are off-track, they deal with relatively minor issues. E.g., many of the comments amount to "We don't know what Obama will *really* by like when he is elected". That concern applies to *any* presidential candidate.

When it comes to evaluating Obama vs McCain in terms of the classic attributes that are desired in a POTUS (i.e. think of POTUS as a job with a job description, rate the candidates as if you were a professional recruiter), Obama/Biden rates very well, but McCain/Palin has several serious shortcomings. Easy enough to see, if you have your head on straight.

But most folks on this forum are pathetically screwed up. Including Sowell. They behave as if they have forgotten that they made a botched decision 4 years ago. Smart people admit their mistakes and learn from them. Not Sowell, not most of the participants in this forum.

This preoccupation with Obama's associations is ridiculous. One indicator of an outstanding public figure is their ability to associate/interact with a wide variety of people (including "bad" people) and bring about a good result. I have read (haven't verified) that FDR engaged the Mafia ("domestic terrorists", omigod) for assistance during WW2; if he did this, then good for him. Nixon, Reagan, et al. had some really weird friends and associates, but they were not corrupted or "unduly influenced" by the weirdos.

Write in Campaign -- Sowell for POTUS!~
He has my vote. This guy would be good. He is utterly sensible. Hell, the best policy thinker out there. Twice over and then some. Doc, you rock! Please keep up the public service.

Dancing Bears.

Investing in Failure - Obama's Plan

Barack Obama's clarion call is to "Sacrifice for the Common Good" - to redistribute wealth, as Obama said to 'Joe the Plumber', "letting those behind catch up".

Who are these citizens that Obama will invest the money of those who work in?

Hard working people that need 'Just a Helping Hand' to catch up?

Hard working students that need help to finish or continue their brilliant educations?

NO, Barack Obama wants to invest OUR money in criminals, those chronically unemployed and those students that have low levels of student academic achievement.

That is like picking the poorest performing stocks one can find and investing their retirement and 401K money in failure - hoping to help those companies that are on a course of bankruptcy, complete their goals.

Those who work get to help criminals pursue their careers, those that won't work, continue not working (with some walking around money) and enable drug users, alcoholics and other addicts to continue their lifestyles.

"Establish 20 Promise Neighborhoods: Obama will create 20 Promise Neighborhoods in cities across the nation that have high levels of poverty and crime and low levels of student academic achievement." Barack Obama, Blueprint for Change

Barack Obama's 'Hope' and 'Change' = 'Investing in Failure' = coming to America with anyone who works help.

Obama's Radical and Communist Allies
Barack Obama was mentored by Communist Frank Marshall Davis, Communist writer and poet (1905-1987).

Frank Marshall Davis was identified unequivocally as a CPUSA member in a 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities.

----------------------------------------------

Barack Obama carefully chose William 'Bill' Ayers who said, "Kill all the rich people. ... Bring the revolution home. Kill your parents."

In the 1960s, Bernardine Dohrn and her husband Bill Ayers were leaders of the "Weatherman" faction, which in 1969 went underground to become America's first terrorist cult.

Barack Obama launched his political career in the home of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

----------------------------------------------

Alice Palmer met Barack Obama during meetings at the home of Bill Ayers and hand picked Obama to fill her newly vacated 'State Senate Seat'.

Alice Palmer served as an executive board member of the U.S. Peace Council, which the FBI identified as a Communist front group.

----------------------------------------------

Michael Klonsky was chosen by Barack Obama as a blogger on the 'Obama official Website'. Klonsky a former leader of 'SDS' - Students for a Democratic Society and a leader of the 'New Communist Party'.

----------------------------------------------

Tim Wheeler is a National Board member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), and has been a key figure in the party's Baltimore chapter since the early 1970s. He helped organize local canvassing and visibility events for Obama, and he chronicled his experiences on the campaign trail in a blog that appeared on the Obama campaign website.

----------------------------------------------

Jeremiah Wright was carefully chosen by Barack Obama to 'Mentor' him and be his spiritual guide.

Mentor Wright became famous for screaming 'God Damn America' from the pulpit at TUCC.

BigBelly
You bringup a good point. Ms. Rice has been put in a nasty bind by Obama's candidacy, and she is handling it quite gracefully. I am not particularly impressed with her performance as SoS, but she has always been a class act. Black conservatives really vex those on the left. For one thing, merely by being black they deprive the left of all their favorite so-called arguments. Except, of course, the ad hominem attack.

Powell has NEVER been a conservative by
any stretch of the imagination.
We started losing mrespect for him a loooong time ago!!!!!
Wake up. Now is the time to vote a straight Rep. ticket so we have a Rep. Sen. and Cong. to go with the McCain/Palin Pres/Vice-Pres. in order to get rid of Pelosy/Reid along with Obama.

United front
As a white person, i never attempt to get an honest opinion on a sensitive subject from a black person, except one on one. If there is another black person present, they both present the usual suspect monolith. Not to me. To each other. And no wonder. Look at the grief black conservatives like Sowell and Michael Steele get merely for voicing common opinions held by millions of other people. So it is obviously very tempting for any black person to jump on the Obama band wagon, if only to fit in with the tide running around him. And Powell has always been a go with the tide type of person. You don't make General by shoveling against the tide. You can't even keep your stars if you try it after you make it. Ask Billy Mitchell, or Douglas (fired) MacArthur.

Powell House Slave No Mo'.
Who would have thunk it that all the "good" General Powell had to do, to go from being a "house slave" to being a "an authentically real Black man" again was to endorse Barry Obama for POTUS who like Powell was Blackness challenged early on in his candidacy.
If you remember certain so-called "Black Leaders" had expressed reservations on Barry's blackness, but all Powell had to do was blame us neocons for calling Barry a Muslim whilst he conveniently identify's a Muslim soldier who served and died for this country to ensure his credibility and viola, Colin is tight with the brova's again.
I've said it before and I'll say it again I would have more respect for the "good" General if he'd just come out and say, he's voting for Barry because he's Black, but to play the Muslim card. S H A M E F U L l.
I've come to realise that Powell, like all moderate Muslims will silently continue to revel in the violent street cred of their fanatical brethren.
I guess Condi Rice is the only "house slave" left in the final days of the Bush Administration. I'm so proud of her.

Lighten Up
Powell is just looking for a job. He probably figures he has no chance at something in a McCain administration and with the poll numbers leaning Obama's way sees him being president anyway. His addition as a cabinet member would mean something to many Americans and help Obama's standing. They may already have a deal giving State back to him if he endorsed Obama. It's just typical political dealing.

Any credibility Powell had
has now evaporated with his alliance with Obama. He could have just as easily aligned himself with Farrakhan. Powell is nothing more than the 99% of the black population that is voting for Obama. Powell is no longer relevant and he knows it.

Military Endorsement
A very interesting article but I would like to see more thoughts on Powell's endorsing Obama as commander in chief. As far as I know, Powell never explained that side of his endorsement and while this country is at war; most important. As a former general, I would think All that is Obama would contradict a general's viewpoint.

Thanks for an insightful piece

LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS
'Community Organizers' are 'Leaders' with 'followers'.
Were not, David Koresh of the Branch Dividians, Jim Jones, Charles Manson and Jeffrey Lundgren (to name a few) 'Community Organizers'?
And now after two years of mainstream media 'brainwashing' propaganda, the American people are being 'Led' to believe 'Community Organizer', b.H.obama, should be Americas next President.
America was founded on the principle that 'We the People' were the 'Leaders' of our Country and that our 'representatives' (politicians) were the 'Followers' of 'We the People' upholding our Countrys 'Constitution' and 'Pledge of Allegiance'.
On November 4th, Americans will vote to either continue to be American citizens or vote to 'Change' and become (followers) subjects of a 'Cult' leadership.

response to TruthHurts?
This is only news to you. Real conservatives have known he is not conservative for some time. I frankly was not surprised by his endorsement. I am not surprised by any black endorsing Obama. There has never before ever been a black candidate for a black person to endorse. To them he cannot be the devil incarnate (only if he were conservative could he be that). Hordes of women were all set to endorse Hillary for the same circumstance. Do not know how many republican women would have done that but I am sure a few would have.

response to:
30YearRegisteredRepublican

Ok I give up. Who did you support? Will you be supporting Barr, Paul or Baldwin this year? Or maybe Obama even? Which kind of 30YearRepublican are you?

In Context
Thank you Dr. Sowell for placing Colin Powell, the important historic figure, in factual historic context.

The American people need your continued identification of facts and accurate placement in historic context. Only through this process may we ever come together.

Thank you.

The elephant in the room
Sowell - and most participants in this forum - made the disastrous error of supporting Bush in 2004.

Although I hear a lot of complaints about Bush, I have encountered almost nobody who has admitted his own error and examined it. (I have encountered exactly 1 person so far who has done this). This vast silence is the "elephant in the room". Pathetic.

"My friends": When you make a bad mistake, you need to admit it and examine it. Otherwise you will repeat similar errors. DUHHHH.

Is there anyone in this forum who is able to admit his mistake and examine it?

(I'm a lifetime Republican. But I did not support Bush. My brain and my conscience told me not to.)

Sharpening the Scalpel....
See! We're already seeing Thomas Sowell Inc rising from the ashes of a prospective Obama Presidency...See! We're already rolling out the first of many four-part hit-job on the REAL "Prince of Darkness", who may occupy the Whitehouse...Notice the pattern here? Multi-part expose which weaves the story of the Colin Powell which none of us REALLY knew until now. We're so THANKFUL to Dr Sowell for telling us that this Four Star General, National Security Advisor, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of State has such "character shortcomings" which three Republican Presidents failed to see. Think of this character assasination as the Conservative version of "Black on Black crime". See! This is just the preview of "Sowell vs Obama" which will be an ongoing and PROFITABLE mini-series. Yes, OUR One will take down 'The One' each week in less than 3000 words...See! As I read the early postings on Townhall, I already see that familiar line: "I would vote for Colin, uh, Thomas Sowell for President in a heartbeat!"...See! Our reknowned Economist KNOWS where the money is. He knows that he'll get more features in MSM. He knows that he stands to cash-in on this election, BIGTIME.... See! There's no doubt what Thomas Sowell will be chanting in the privacy of his own home on Tuesday: O-bah-ma! O-bah-ma! Cha-ching!!

LEARN SOMETHING EVERY DAY
I have told friends that I would have supported Powell nomination. Was not aware of the Armitage-Palme fiasco. Am absolute agreement re: how much more USA contributes to NATO (and other "global" organizations than allies. One of reasons I am upset is Demo Party commitment to give % of GDP to UN (like they know how to spend money wisely). Thanks for info.

Now he has value
Funny....I remember when liberals in general and black liberal entertainers in particular referred to Collin Powell and Condi Rise as "house Slaves". I guess that's all forgiven and forgotten now that he's joined the Obama celebrity circus. I guess now they will consider him "black enough".

While you, Dr. Sowell, I'm afraid will forever remain "uncle Thom" to the libs. Oh what I wouldn't give to have you as my actual uncle!! I wish!!

Please continue to educate the masses. As always, great column.

The Topic
Colin Powell could have been a nominee for president in the recent past. He chose not to.

His endorsement of Obama is elegantly explained by Dr. Sowell, who as usual, seems to hit the nail right on the head.

Good column,
