Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

One of the few political cliches that makes sense is that "In politics, overnight is a lifetime."

Less than a year ago, the big question was whether Rudolph Giuliani could beat Hillary Clinton in this year's presidential election. Less than two months ago, Barack Obama had a huge lead over John McCain in the polls. Less than a week ago, the smart money was saying that Mitt Romney would be McCain's choice for vice president.

We don't need Barack Obama to create "change." Things change in politics, in the economy, and elsewhere in American society, without waiting for a political messiah to lead us into the promised land.

Who would have thought that Obama's big speech at the Democratic convention would disappoint expectations, while McCain's speech electrified his audience when he announced his choice of Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate?

Some people were surprised that his choice was a woman. What is more surprising is that she is an articulate Republican. How many of those have you seen?

Despite the incessantly repeated mantra of "change," Barack Obama's politics is as old as the New Deal and he is behind the curve when it comes to today's economy.

Senator Obama's statement that "our economy is in turmoil" is standard stuff on the left and in the mainstream media, which has been dying to use the word "recession."

Not only has the economic slowdown failed to reach the definition of a recession, the most recent data show the U.S. economy growing at a rate exceeding 3 percent-- a rate that many European economies would die for, despite our being constantly urged to imitate those countries whose end results are not as good as ours.

Barack Obama's "change" is a recycling of the kinds of policies and rhetoric of the New Deal that prolonged the Great Depression of the 1930s far beyond the duration of any depression before or since.

These are the same kinds of liberal policies that led to double-digit inflation, double-digit interest rates and rising unemployment during the Carter administration. These are "back to the future" changes to economic disasters that need repeating.

Make no mistake, the political rhetoric of FDR was great. For those who admire political rhetoric, as so many of Barack Obama's supporters seem to, FDR was tops. For those who go by actual results, FDR's track record was abysmal.

Although the Great Depression of the 1930s began under Herbert Hoover, unemployment during Hoover's last year in office was not as high as it became during each of the first five years under FDR.

During the eight years of FDR's first two terms as president, there were only two years in which unemployment was lower than it had been under Herbert Hoover-- and not by much.

World War II has been credited by some with getting the United States out of the Great Depression. What the war did was put an end to the New Deal, as national survival became the top priority and replaced FDR's anti-business and class warfare rhetoric.

Senator Obama's rhetoric today is the anti-business and class warfare rhetoric that worked so brilliantly in a political sense for FDR in the 1930s. But Obama is following an opposite course from FDR when it comes to recognizing threats to American national security.

Senator Obama has repeatedly tried to deal with national security threats with rhetoric. He tried to dismiss the threat of a nuclear Iran with because Iran is "a small nation"-- even though it is larger than Japan, which launched a devastating attack against the United States at Pearl Harbor.

FDR had the good sense to begin urging greater military preparedness in 1940, more than a year before the United States was attacked. He said, "If you wait until you see the whites of their eyes, you will never know what hit you."

Cutting the military budget and taking foreign policy problems to the United Nations are Obama's version of "change."

That is change that we dare not believe in. It is the audacity of hype.

But, but, but he is the messiah!
Great succinct article! The left has finally found religion and it is Obama! His speech reminded me of Hitler! And the morons lap it up and can't get enough.

We are in deep trouble if we elect this bozo, even McCain, as bad as he is, is much better than this nutcase. He is backed by the powerful Chicago machine, which is why Hillary didn't stand a chance, but is vacuous himself.

Thinking is "above his paygrade".

The only way things...
...would have been perfect this election is if Dr. Condoleeza Rice had been named as McCain's VP nominee.

I think she is probably one of the hardest working, most under-appreciated Secretary of State in modern history.

That woman has been overseas and in the Mid-East working side by side with our generals, allies, and leaders from nations who "don't like us". She is truly inspiring and I wish more people would learn her story... perhaps she will right a book now that George W.'s second term is winding down and she begins looking to taking some time off.

That said, I think Sarah Palin is a GREAT choice also. God Bless John McCain, experience, and wisdom... my best wishes to everyone (Democrat and Republican) for a wonderful, historical campaign with astonishing stories that could happen nowhere else in the world!

Right on, Dr. Sowell.
You are so right so often it is almost scary. I admire your thought process and your ability to clearly communicate the true facts. Thank you.

John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his choice for VP is a political masterstroke. Can anyone doubt McCain is fearless and has the countries best interst at heart? He must, and will I'm sure, do whatever it takes to keep the Marxist twosome of Obama and Biden out of the White House.

I hope Governor Palin's addition to the ticket will placate enough of the so called social conservatives to get them out to vote for the Republican ticket. Staying home is tantamount to a vote to allow the Marxists to take over this great country.

Obamanible !
I have never seen a bigger fraudulent snowjob foisted upon the American people. The Demoncratic party and their lapdog media are rabid dogs who will do anything to win. The Soros-backed radical left and their cronies are foaming at the mouth. Isn't enough said when every terrorist group and radical regime who has voiced their choice, want Obama to win ?

1st Black President Will Be Conservative
While liberals try to con the American public into thinking that they're looking out for everyone, conservatives continue to recognize talent and reward it with nominations to the highest positions in the land.

In order for any presidential candidate, irrespective of race or gender, to be electable, they must have new ideas and they must stand for something. Vague references to change will never cut it. Senator Obama has no new ideas, just more liberalism.

Some year soon, the Republicans will nominate a black person with great fiscal ideas, strong character and a belief in conservative principles, and that person will become president. Liberals would never let that kind of person come up through their ranks.

Palin is a great pick
1. She is a fiscal conservative
2. She is pro-drilling
3. She is anti-infanticide
4. She will draw away those Hillary supporters who saw their candidate lose to a guy who *Just walked in the door*.

Not sure if Maverick will win as he has some baggage, but Palin is a great choice for Veep.

I guess it's over?

John McCain is President...

Great column--
As usual Dr. Sowell writes a great column. I am glad that Sarah Palin in on the ticket. I just hope that she is able to play a hard core sicnificant role if the repubs win. I am hoping that the dems lose this one big.

Character is the defining...
Character is the defining characteristic that all Leaders must possess. O'bama and the Democratic leaders have none. John McCain deserves our respect and Sarah Palin has more Moral Character in her little finger then all the Demonrats in Both House and the Senate. If John McCain wins the POTUS and dies in office, Palin, because of her desire to do what's right and based upon her core conservative convictions, she will probably go down in History as one of America's Greatest Presidents. Remember this, the Office Of the President of the United States, is all about Character, very little else matters.

Totally off topic...
but I want to remind everyone to get out the vote by walking your precincts tomorrow morning in California to encourage your neighbors and friends to vote Yes on Prop. 8. A yes vote amends the California constitution to recognize only marriage between a man and a woman as valid in the Golden State.

Sucks to see the great city of San Francisco continue it's fall as a result of liberal politics' takeover. Sad to see the city's bounteous military history be overshadowed by backward neanderthals who call themselves liberals. Alcatraz, The Bridge, The Presidio, The Legion of Honor, Union Square, and so many other sites evoke a great past. Sucks to see it fall.

Dr. Sowell is...
the clearest writer on both sides of the political spectrum today. So many writers change their "voice" yearly as they try to find something that sticks, but Dr. Sowell has found his in his amazing ability to write so clearly.

In the spirit of free markets I hope our side becomes more adept at making room for newer, better writers by not propping up weaker ones.

Dr. Sowell, thanks for another clear and concise article. Nobody does it better.

The power of clarity.

Dr. Sowell... what a national treasure.

Right he is, yet once again. What a shock.

And I also believe that the first black president, and the first woman president... will both be conservatives.

And I believe in equal opportunity... not equal outcome. One lifts up, the other destroys.

And I believe in personal charity... not in charity with other people's money. Again one lifts up, the other destroys.

But, tragically... I also believe that too many people still fall for "something for nothing".

And equally tragic... that too many people are ready to believe that it is always someone else's fault they aren't making it.

Still, I believe in the American people.

Finally, Governor Sarah Palin... you go, girl!!!

Palin VP Selection
I really think she is great pick that underscores even more Obama's pathetically thin resume, regardless of the lies and brutal obfuscation spread by the left and even some right wing talkers today to the contrary.(savage)

Dr Sowell actually deserves to be elected president of this country 100 times more than the fraud Barack H Obama and would make a great one at that.

The real meaning behind Palin
If McCain wins with the biggest political gamble of the last two centuries, he sets Palin up to be the next president. In one stroke, masterfully done, he sets up a true conservative to attain experience, and the hearts of the people. And he removes the Hillary factor in 2012 and beyond.

Electrifying the Audience.....
It would be great to have someone like Obama on the GOP side but there's no one there. Conservatives want a strong Commander in Chief and someone who get's out of the way of Freedom. We've had a strong Commander in Chief who stayed out of the way for the last 7 years. The perception now is that America is "less respected abroad" and "Wall street got drunk". I'm sure Conservatives think that the speech did "not reach expectations" but 38 million homes watched it. Say what you want but America seems to be inspired by Obama. When the country thinks we're going in the "wrong direction",oratory inspiration is a big weapon to have in your policitcal arsonal. Reagan's not remembered because he was a Conservative. He's remembered because he was the Great Communicator and he was inspiring.

Fresh Air
You're correct, Dr. Sowell. Gov, Palin is that rare, articulate Republican. let's hope that she remains that way!

Thanks so much for your columns.

Bob Fisher

McCain's pick...
... was a stroke of political brilliance that few, even on these pages, give him proper credit for possessing. He snookered the Dems. They are left with nothing but two windbags!

The comparison to FDR is off. FDR at least had ideas, an alphabet-soup full of them. Obama is a one-trick pony: speechifying is all he does.

Maybe the upcoming debates should feature Obama vs Palin and McCain taking on Biden? Palin would clean his clock!

Watch out, Pelosi! I get the feeling your next.

Dr. Sowell is "Change" -- GREAT COLUMN!!
Dr. Sowell is spot on in his analysis of Barack Obama. Dr. Sowell writes:

"Senator Obama's rhetoric today is the anti-business and class warfare rhetoric that worked so brilliantly in a political sense for FDR in the 1930s."

Obama's anti-business rant is wearing thin. And where does he get off taxing success? Does he not know that these companies represent significant positions in mutual funds which are in so many people's retirement savings?

Dr. Sowell summed it up best. It is indeed the audacity of hype.

Excellant as usual
FDR started this country down the road to socialism with his Ponzi scheme of Social Security which I hope Mccain will privatize totally in order to give the people a real retirement program before it bankrupts us..

Anderson659 is entirely correct IMO, Mccain showed his love of country and it's values by this pick. The lady is a mirror image of Mccain in her determination to get this gov't back to honesty and fiscal conservatism, his signature issues for 26 years.

If, God forbid we lose him, she will carry on splendidly in his stead...a smart and tough lady, she will be the American Maggie Thatcher.

Brilliant pick.

Obama scares me!
Obama scares me! Cut the defense budget significantly! Increase taxes a monumental amount! Increase spending out-of-sight! And then go negotiate with crazy dictators and terrorists who would kill him on sight! Obama is idiotic, inept, uniformed, has a death wish, or is a Marxist; or all of these! That is why he scares the beegeebes out of me!

When I get downhearted
about the stuff going on in politics, I am always lifted up by reading Dr. Sowell's column. He clears out the cobwebs and goes to the heart of the matter for me. I don't know if he gets how very much appreciated he is, but I hope so.
Thank you Dr. Sowell.

A Refreshing Dynamic
The Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin is the authentic 'change' in this campaign now. Obama will need to redefine another word to refine for use in his rhetoric.

The more he and Biden show up, the more they become the apparent windbags of the Beltway. They make me so very, very tired.

Almost all of the so called leaders lie about everything. Our country could not survive Obama, Pelosi and Reid at the same time.

"Sarah Palin for her entire political career has been underestimated," said Paulette Simpson of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women. "She's tough, she's tenacious. I believe that she does have what it takes to get out there. Again, her ability to connect with voters and make a case is very, very, very strong."

Governor Sarah Palin has not said she will change Washington, D.C. like Obama promises he will do. She is "Change"!

I will wager there are thousands of bureacrats in many, many wasteful departments of government who are squirming in their seats and will be writing their resignation letters if the McCain/Palin ticket wins the White House.

They have done nothing but undermine the Republican administration with timely leaks and their Marxist ideology.

They are equally incompetent as the "Do Nothing Congress". They shuffle papers from desk to desk and collect their paychecks. There are generations of them on the payroll thru nepotism. The Governor does not like corruption!

Thomas Sowell for President
And if not, how about Chairman of the Federal Reserve? Will somebody PLEASE tap this brilliant man for a leadership position in our country? He and Walter Williams are national treasures!

Palin / Jindal 2012!
Could happen...

I agree
I agree Prof.s Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams are NATIONAL TREASURES. They need to be publicized much more.

2008 Election is very important
First lets work to get McCain-Palin elected then we can plan for Palin-Jindal in 2012. If McCain-Palin do not win in 2008 --- 2012 will be just a dream because of the Obama-Biden nightmare in 2008.

Changes in Politics
Regarding:” Changes in Politics,” 8/30/08

Mr.Sowell,

I respect your academic achievements and your successful books. I purchased a couple of your books over the years “Race and Culture, a world view”, and “Ethnic America”. I was enlightened and informed with your brilliant words, and proud of your accomplishments.

However, I lost touch with you as you continually pimped the war in Iraq and upheld the illegal practices of the Bush administration.

Your hateful article today is a continued repudiation of Barack Obama’s character, and stated positions in all areas. Nobody can be as bad as you portray him. You seem to dislike him immensely merely because he is a liberal democrat. Or is their something else? What is your problem? Are you a self-hating man? Do you believe that even though an incompetent white man has screwed up the country in the past four years, only another old white man can repair it, or do you think that the country is in good shape and does not need changing?

Your continuing bitterness is sad to see.

Ernest Williams

Ernest - the Obama Character
Babies Crying in Terror, alive, separated from their mothers after the abortion is over.

The 'Born Alive' baby who has known the closest contact with another human any human can experience - the baby has been inside another human for months.

The baby has kicked, stretched and some even suck their thumbs. Every need has been met by its human host - shelter, nourishment and safety.

Suddenly one day the baby is attacked with chemicals and poisons.

The baby enters a world bent on death and destruction towards its life.

The baby has never seen a butterfly, puppy, pretty colors or things all babies enjoy or had any human say I love you.

The baby enters the world in excruciating pain and the best trained Medical experts in the world refuse the baby any aid - in a hospital - where all facilities are available and the Doctors have sworn to protect all human life - except his.

The baby is thrown on a cold table and left to die in some hidden place.

The baby struggles to breathe because a human is born with the human will to survive. The baby cries in terror and sobs for help - that never comes - no one cares - no one helps.

The innocent baby tries to live with every breath and dies alone, abandoned like a used kleenex, never having experienced anything but pain, rejection and hatred.

When the baby finally dies a death of torture and the ultimate rejection any human can receive, it is such a worthless human it doesn't even have a 'Death Certificate' issued that it ever existed.

For a few minutes, hours or days, that baby WAS an American Citizen, that should have received all of the 'Rights and Protections' under law, that any other American Citizen should have.

Michelle and Barack Obama and most Democrats, have done everything humanly possible, to make sure this baby does NOT even receive any pain medication.

Ernest comment please?
"Pam Sutherland ... of ... Illinois Planned Parenthood ... told ABC News, "We worked with him specifically on his strategy. The Republicans were in control of the Illinois Senate at the time. They loved to hold votes on 'partial birth' and 'born alive.' They put these bills out all the time because they wanted to pigeonhole Democrats. ..."

"Let me interpret. We, Planned Parenthood, told him what to say, and how to say it, so we could continue to kill infants; babies, just a few inches from birth, and those completely out of the womb that we missed! Our "colored minister" was well prepared by Planned Parenthood.

Partial Birth abortion -- which I will not describe here -- but know that 80% of Americans don't want this barbaric act practiced in this country – Barack Obama voted to keep legal!

The Born Alive Victims Act is a law to protect a child that was born alive after a botched abortion; a law that would require that the child would receive medical assistance.

Barack Obama voted against it! Yes. Barack Obama, with an "engaging personality" is being used by the leading abortion provider in the United States to promote and execute infanticide of predominately minority babies!"

Ernest your view on Character please?

Ernest would you detail for us exactly what are the 'properties' of character?

Obama seems to have little - what are we missing?

Ernest's disenchantment with Dr. Sowell
Dr. Sowell is repudiating B. Hussein Obama's policies precisely for its stated positions. Do you care to point out any factual inaccuracies in Dr. Sowell's article?

And one another thing, we conservatives do not have a need to rabidly hate someone to criticize their policies on merits. Ad hominem attacks and personal bitterness are the exclusive province of the liberals.

Finally "Nobody can be as bad as you portray him"??? Really? I am sure we can all join hands and sing kumbalaya.

Another thank you
I am so happy to see what may be a glimmer of light at the end of the dark tunnel of liberalism in Sarah Palin.
Dr. Sowell you are right on the money as far as FDR. My parents were small (too small to make a good living) ranchers and had no use for FDR at all.
I wish you folks would hush about McCain dying, I am a couple of months older and had melanoma about the same time as he did, plus another skin cancer and am hale and hearty.
Remember who is having to keep taking vacations.
Excellent column.

yes, character
Republicans have a nominee who, when given the chance to get an early ticket out of a POW camp, turned it down and stayed with his men, suffering abuse that few of us can contemplate. They have a VP nominee who knew her baby was going to be Down's syndrome. Most folks on her staff didnt' even know she was pregnant - she and her husband could easily have terminated the pregnancy and no one would have been the wiser. They kept the baby. That's character.

Obama denies knowing his friends if it isn't convenient. Biden plagerizes and denies it. Never mind that their political viewpoints are skewed. They have no character.

If the American people choose wrong, they will most certainly deserve what they get.

Socialism and the Warfare
Like all right wingers, Thomas Sowell rewrites history. World War II ended the anti-business and class warfare rhetoric because the cooperation and coordination of the whole nation was needed to deal with the threat of Fascism and Nazism. The US government created a warfare economy that was just as regulated and controlled as any found in the Fascist states, not class warfare but the coordination of business, labor, and government. After the war, many wanted to retain elements of this warfare economy because they feared a return of the Great Depression and high rates of unemployment. The Cold War solved the issue, and the nation avoided any return to laissez-faire capitalism. The results, Thomas Sowell, were far from “abysmal.” We won WWII and the Cold War. Chaka Z.

Why do libs not get it?
They come out every four years and promise the moon and if we would just let them take 70% of our hard earned money they could make everything better for everybody. They're wrong. Socialism is on display throughout Canada and Europe and it is worse than our system. What's wrong with our system is exactly how Dr. Sowell explains it. We have been trying for 70 years to wean ourselves off socialist programs and their bureaucracy that doesn't work. If we could elect common sense (no dims) representatives to clean this up and forge a private-government partnership to rid ourselves of this bureaucratic nightmare we could have the best of both worlds. Democrats will not stand for this because they're led by dims (Anti-Americans for divisive political gain) and if they stand up for common sense conservative they have to go independent like Liebermann. Their foreign policy is even a bigger joke. Oblaba one minute wants to bomb Pakistan and don't worry about Iran, "Its a tiny country, not a threat like China or Russia." If a Republican had said this he would be laughed out of Denver.

I think what Dr. Sowell is...
telling us in a very polite and factual way is that FDR was a Socialist and that Obama isn't even as smart as FDR was.

The Communist Party USA has put their stamp of approval on candidate Obama. Anyone that wants a President that the Communists agree with is certifiably insane.

Abortion And Conservatives
If one is pro-abortion,they are not conservative and I would go so far to say they are not Christians. If you are for legal murder of little innocent children, then you are not even above the animals. Most of them would die to protect their own and you can kill yours?

Barack-O can stand on the highest mountain ad shout it to the skies how he loves his country and his fellowman. That won't make it true.If he is willing to let one little one die that could have lived,he is not presidential material.

Nothing he says and does shows that he is capable of governing this country. He will dance to someone else's tune, that tune is some kind of socialist mantra his mentors have taught him.

The audacity of hype.
Great line.

Truth Hurts
It must because you are doing a lot of screaming about the truth from Mr. Sowell. And Obama could never be and will never be Reagan. Ronald Reagan had convictions and stood for them. He had the toughness to face down the Soviets. Obama has no convictions whatsoever. Isn't to tough to see that considering how he changes every position according to how the wind is blowing. Why do you think the Putin and Chavez and every terrorist group on the planet want him in office so badly. Talk is cheap.

But A Question.
Yes, yes, I agree with Sowell, and he is great. I also agree with all the positive agreement posted here. I love Sarah Palin already, almost from her first word. Yes, it looks like we have a great chance, now.

However, Sowell did mention double-digit interest rates, and I'd like to know why some of those are not available to this country's savers?

Yes, since loaning out money has become a higher risk, why are interest rates one can get from a bank, and other providers of financial instruments, so low?

Really, I expect to hear answers to this. I am not unsophisticated in $money matters. I've had 12% mortgages for home buying, and didn't mind a bit. Once even paid 13.5% for a second -- again, didn't mind a bit. I doubled my money every four years in the stock market. I've owned corporate bonds paying 11%.

It's no big deal, I don't really need anything, anymore. But I do wonder about this. Is the answer as simple as our government's printing presses?

Sowell seems to be well informed, and well positioned to provide an honest answer. Or maybe do all the borrowers not want to rock this boat?

The Man Behind The Curtain- Obama
There is so much ironic beauty in McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

The initial appeal that Barack Obama had, in the eyes of the decent Americans in places like Iowa and mainstream America, was representative of their disillusionment with career politicians and their seeming condescension towards middle Americans.

Just like the Wizard of Oz, the man behind the curtain is all talk.

...words...just words...speeches...just speeches

The Democrats, in an attempt to play on this sense of disenfranchisment, thought they could package Obama as a fresh face, uncorrupted by insider politics; a champion of the "little man."

But the exposure of his ties to the racist Trinity United Church of Satan & Jeremiah Wright, William Ayres, and Antonin "Tony" Rezko, among others, opened the floodgates, washing away the sugar-coating the MSM and Democrat party had immersed this Great Pretender in.

Now the Lone Stranger (and his party) have been reduced to telling the American people, ala the Wizard of Oz, "don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain."

With McCain's selection of Governor Sarah Palin (and in the comparison), Barack Hussein Obama's choice of a 35-year Washington insider leftwing political hack, the Great Pretender is finally exposed for the phony and false "hope" for "change" he really is.

Those who praise McCain for Palin
as Veep are exactly the idiots McCain was hoping you would be. How quickly we forget that not even a week ago, McCain was an unacceptable candidate to most conservative voters because of his decades-long tendency to author and support legislation that is destructive to this nation.

McCain is a clever man, he knows how much he is despised by the majority of conservatives and realizes that the growing tidal wave of discontent could easily crush him, and so he devised a brilliant plan: create a distraction. Conservatives, he thought, would be so in love with him for choosing a woman who had principles and who stood for conservative values that all the horrible things he's done would magically disappear. He was right. Instead of speaking about how McCain wants to give 30 million illegals amnesty, we're busy being breathless about how "Hot" and "Historic" and "Traditional" McCain's Veep is.

Don't you people know that he's just using her, just like he used Huckabee? Don't you people know that as President, HE'S the one with the power to sign destructive legislation into law? Because McCain made ONE good choice does not change the fact that he is unacceptable as President. If Palin is so great, why don't we choose HER as our presidential nominee?

Nio.
What is the problem with illegals? Really? I lived in your State for 40 years. When I first moved there, I was made to understand that the illegals had been coming there for 40 years, at least, prior to that day. Then, another 40 years of them, as I watched, and now, 5 years more. That's 85 years, not counting the ones coming the years before that, and the ones already there at the time of California's Statehood.

So, y'all been noticing that for what, about 10 years now? A little slow on the "uptake?"

Yes, there are problems. Yes, just like in the USMC, there's always that 10% -- same, maybe a little more, in McCain's Air Navy. He knows.

Y'all around most of this "illegal immigrant" thing, know little.

Just like here in my new State. They round-up the working illegals, send them off someplace, and leave the 20% non-working citizens amongst us -- costing us taxpayers for their livelihood. What is the sense of that?

McCain's working on it.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Roosevelt may have made stupid mistakes in dealing with the Depression. He was an antiSemite who kept Jewish refugees out of the United States during the Holocaust. He handed Eastern Europe over to Stalin, may he rot in hell, at Yalta. BUT, he brought the United States successfully through World War II, and he deserves credit for that.

Sowell's truth
Your understanding of today's political and moral climate is brilliant. You have said it all in a nutshell. I lived through those years and I do not want to live through them again. It is so sad to hear repeatedly how bad things are in the ecomony in order to vote for a change! A change to what, a nanny state?

Thomas Sewell -

I so appreciate your writing that when ever I run into someone who is unsure how to vote, I give them your and Walter Williams' name to convince them.

If you alter a persons foundational thinking, their conclusion naturally changes.

Similarities of Barack and FDR
When I listened to Obama's speech during the DNC convention, all I could think of is FDR's "a chicken in every pot" stump. Now, we have the same old 70+ year old socialistic drab using health care as the token "chicken" along with background music from popular artists and fireworks for the replacement parsley on your dinner plate. The fine dining atmosphere the DNC has served the "chicken" to us will have us all choking on the bones.

bringing the message to DC
in his acceptance speech, obama noted that it is time that the people bring their message to washington dc, and that washington dc stop sending it's message out to the people. i agree with that sentiment, and it is very clear that sarah palin is the person who will carry the people's message to DC.

OUTSTANDING COMMENTS FOR DR, SOWELL.
VOTERIGHT and post @ 1:47 p.m. Aug.30:

The liberal left, the MSM and the cultural media elite have succeded in their quest to keep great Americans like Dr.Sowell, Walt Williams and Larry Elder on the sidelines. Remember, according to liberals, Black Conseratives DO NOT EXIST! When it comes to Jackson and Sharpton, however, the MSM has All The Time In The World. Thankfully, we have TH and some (but not enough) conservative newspapers and some (but not enough) T.V. News outlets that "Let Feedom Ring". Dr. Sowell, Larry Elder, Walt Williams and many other outstanding Americans need to be heard all across America! The sooner the better!!!!!

TRUTHHURTS and post @ 1:44 a.m. EST.

Very glad you noted America "SEEMS" to be inspired by Obama.

NIO and post @ 4:31 a.m. EST.

You don't get it. This election has not been, nor is now, about McCain.

It's about a hardcore liberal with a 100 % perfect, pro-abortion voting record. That's Obama!

It's about someone supported by every left-wing, radical group in America today. That's Obama.

And, as Dr. Sowell has pointed so well and so often, it's about someone who is not ready to lead OR DEFEND the most powerful nation on the face of the earth. That's Obama.

The choice was always clear.

Now it's clearer than ever.

Hussein Obama's Rhetoric
The only difference between a bucket of S--- and Hussein Obama's rhetoric is the bucket.

5+ stars, as usual
As Rush is America's anchorman, Dr. Sowell is America's professor.

Charles Barkley said, "Poor people have been voting for democrats for 50 years, and they are still poor." He was talking about black people, who just don't get it and they're not going to get it. Sold they're souls for a handful of promises, still on the plantation and clueless, voting for an new overseer who looks like them.

I've never witnessed in my 59 years, the deaf, dumb and blind liberals so far gone on such a ZERO for a candidate.

That must be SOME Kool Aid the dhimmicrats have! Better than Purple Haze or Orange Sunshine, apparently (please don't ask how I know about such things).

Communist Goals in America 1963

I have the 45 goals the Communists have for America, that was read into the Congressional Record in 1963. You will be amazed at how the Communists have succeeded by 2008 - 45 years later. I have listed five (5) examples
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

BHO
just univited myself from Thanksgiving dinner by saying that BHO has the same old message, just that the skin is brown instead of white(or female HAHAHA LOL)

FDR and JFK too!
Results, given the inputs, matter. Not "talk".

Not only did FDR's actions probably delay the onset of recovery, but they very likely helped convince Hitler that we were too weak to interfere with his conquest of Europe.

And while we're at it, consider JFK's vaunted leadership: the Bay of Pigs fiasco convinced Khrushchev that JFK didn't have the stomach to resist the introduction of SRBMs into Cuba, resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Also note that it was JFK that first sent our forces into Vietnam in the thousands, probably also over compensating for the impression given by the Bay of Pigs.... and the history of LBJ and Vietnam flows naturally from trying to salvage JFK's "great words" (...fight any foe, pay any price...) from the embarrassment of his earlier failures.

I was particularly frightened listening to Obama talk about expanding the war in Afghanistan and pursuing Osama into Pakistan. Fighting in Iraq, with easy access to the oceans and with allies on 3 sides was far easier than invading the mountains of Pakistan... And that overlooks the fact that we had many UN resolutions justifying entering Iran, and NONE justifying entering Pakistan!

This is the same type of "over the top" rhetoric that led JFK and LBJ to over react to the Vietnam crisis, leading to over 50,000 American deaths.

Obama is not just "talk", he is dangerous.

Voteright
I'm with you! All true Americans with an eye to the future, should work to get McCain/Palin elected. We must ban together to keep the Obama Marxist from setting foot in the White House.

For those interested. There is an excellent article about Palin and what she might mean to us and the future. You can read it at...

http://pepperhawkfarm.blogtownhall.com/default.aspx

Nio writes:
"McCain is a clever man, he knows how much he is despised by the majority of conservatives and realizes that the growing tidal wave of discontent could easily crush him, and so he devised a brilliant plan: create a distraction."

I am very much in agreement here. I wouldn't exactly call the Palin choice a "distraction", but I am not so overjoyed by the appearance of a conservative on the ticket that I have forgotten what a snake-in-the-grass Republican McCain is.

The Obama nomination has given McCain room to wander even further left than usual, which he has done to get the nomination. He is now giving a show of moving back toward the right, but in the end, if elected, he will be presiding over a nation with a Democrat Congress. In order to get anything 'done' he will have to go "across the aisle" time after timer after time.

McCain will not govern as a conservative, will not stand up to the lib media, will not balance the budget, will not be able to make the tax cuts permanent, will not be able to get constructionist judges confirmed, will not be able to get drilling bans lifted, will not be able to get draconian regulations against refineries and nukes eased, and will continue to fall for global warming and every other patent-medicine liberal scheme that comes down the pike with the MSM's endorsement.

His slogan is "Country First" but his political record tells us that "Johnny's ego comes first."

About FDR
FDR like most liberal Icons is more hype and fantasy than anything else. You have pointed out his economic short comings, yet his foreign policy was even more disastrous.
After the war ended America had the ability and indeed the duty to spread freedom and democracy throughout the world, but instead, FDR gave Eastern Europe to a butcher like Stalin, for him terrorize and control.

Brilliant
Thank you Thomas Sowell for your writings. I look forward to reading you and this one on extending the depression because of FDR's New Deal was like a light going off in my head.
We are still fighting the consequences...furthered by Johnson's War on Poverty.
cc

FDR
Thank you, Mr. Sowell, for actually being a journalist that will say that FDR was not one of the greatest presidents in US history. Even the history books teach that he was just wonderful, but I agree with the comment by Paul that he was leading us down a very dangerous path. And then he succumbed to the USSR when he did not need to and gave them control of Eastern Europe at Yalta.

Well Said. Bravo!
Dr. Sowell reads the political landscape perfectly. Obama is nothing more than the same old failed politics of the past. Scary!

This Is It: McCain or Obama -- Choose!
Wiseone offers, "The Obama nomination has given McCain room to wander even further left than usual, which he has done to get the nomination."

So, what? Are you crying over spilled milk? The tickets have been forged. It's over. Get past it.

There are only two viable choices for the Presidency: Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin. Your efforts, positive or negative, will end up supporting one of these tickets into office.

For me, it is simple, given a choice, I will pick the one on the right. Also, for me, I have no problem distinguishing which one is on the right: McCain/Palin. They will get my vote, absoultely.

Dr. Sowell
Thanks for another great lesson.

Bubba

Sowell
I enjoy reading your columns they are down to earth and truthful.

Fox News
Dr. Sowell We need to see you on Hannity & Chombs.

What no Truman?
Nice article Dr. Sowell. I also found it interesting when listening to Obama's list of DNC 'heroes' that he did not include the one Dem more (in)famous than all of them, Truman. Here was the ONLY man in history to use not one, but two nuclear bombs. On the domestic front, he also gave us the IRS, and numerous other socialist programs. The DNC tries to do a scrub job on history, and invoke names that they think will stir the masses, but those of us who were educated prior to 1980 know history as it was, before the unions/liberal machine took over our educational system. I constantly correct my teen daughters on history, they have received such a skewered view in school that I now homeschool my youngest. I wonder when the NEA will finally rewrite math so that 2+2=7?

About the Democrat's Convention
Go to redstate.com and find their photos and films, one of which is a FIVE MINUTE video in which the cameraman looks for American flags inside and outside the stadium that weren't already there before the convention. Eventually, American flags are found in plastic bags, some of which also contained trash.

Gov. Palin
With Gov. Palin, whom John McCain had met only once before, chosen as McCain's running mate, the right-wingers can't complain about affirmative action or the need for "experience" anymore. And please dont' feed me the bull about her executive experience: mayor of a city with less than 10,000 residents and governor of a state aout the size of Brooklyn. Give me a break!

Bottom Line
So we have a choice here between the Welfare candidate and the Warfare candidate.

Is anything wrong with Ron Paul, except that he is unelectable – perhaps only because people like you ignore his existence?

For Mac Moore
I don't take instructions from the RNC and I don't take instructions from you.

The plight you describe as 'McCain or Obama' is a direct result of soulless, weenie, RINO, finger-in-the-wind moderate and liberal Republicans who wasted the GOP majorities during the Bush Administration and legislated like a bunch of selfish, arrogant, spoiled liberal elitists.

Now the same RINOs that cost the GOP its majority are crying that we have to elect McCain (one of their own) to prevent a Dem Prez/Congress from going hog wild with liberal socialism. The same weenies that authored this fiasco now tell us we must reward them for it to avoid a full-blown disaster.

If McCain had supported tax cuts, drilling, the fence, and constructionist judges during the last 8 years the GOP might have gotten these things done and might still have its majorities.

Instead he told us the tax cuts were "stupid" and "irresponsible", voted to maintain the ban on drilling, co-wrote the amnesty bill, and was the proud leader of the "gang of fourteen".

What has changed? He's going to Prez, that's all. This makes him no different than the hypocritical Democrats and liberals who gave Clinton an int'l peace award for bombing Christians in Bosnia and Kosovo but want Bush and Cheney charged with war crimes. He's just another version of "It's OK if I do it but don't you dare do it."

And he's not even going to do it. In the next four years our taxes will rise, amnesty and welfare will be given to illegals, the price of gas will double, idiotic subsidies will be given to "alternate fuels", and the federal debt will continue to grow. No matter which of these egoists wins.

I will not endorse or support that. Neither of them gets my vote or my support.

FDR - Who's That?
Professor Sowell's analysis is right on target. The problem is that our public educational system has so dumbed down our children that many of them don't even know about FDR, the Depression, their own history or that of Western Civilization. And what they do know is full of half truths and utter falsity. They are the perfect dupes for a demagogue like Obama with his class warfare and Marxist rhetoric. From a Saul Alinsky community organizer to a Presidential candidate. Talk about your stealth candidate. No wonder Hamas endorses him. He would be the best president that Islam could ever hope for. Cordially, Phil Cronin

The Audacity of Hype
Great line, Dr. Sowell - THAT should be the title of B. Hussein's bio.

This nation, great as it is, can not endure another commie/leftist administration - their socialist programs have already stressed and rotted it nearly to the breaking point.

And Bawak is about as bad a prospect as the dhimmis have ever proposed. May he end up on the trash heap of history with the rest of them.

Obismal - Obambi
.
God save this nation if Hussein Obama Nagasaki is elected.

Thank you one more time Dr Sowell.

We all would vote for you or anyone faintly resembling you. Color is no longer a factor, I hope. As someone said, character is.

Obama's heroes
"Rcountry" mentioned the list of heroes Obama recounted in his Convention speech. I've heard no one mention the fact that the Democrats have made reference and comparisons of Obama to Abraham Lincoln throughout the convention and even beforehand while alluding to President Lincoln in announcing the VP nomination at the Springfield, Illinois Capitol; yet Abraham Lincoln was the first REPUBLICAN President and he operated under Republican values. I guess Democrats couldn't find a strong enough hero in their own Party to emulate that they now have to steal from the Republican Party.

McCain's Savvy and Political Genius

are proven out by visiting the following pro-Hillary Clinton site

http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.ph p?t=26179

and seeing what her supporters are saying about Ms. Palin. Conservatives, you will be astounded and very pleased. And there must be much weeping and gnashing of teeth in the Obama camp, for they have no effective counter to what Ms. Palin brings to the party.

"our economy is in turmoil"
Each national election cycle for the past Two decades has found us listning to this tired drum beat from the democrats. They each have gone as far as to suggest that our economy is the worst since the great depression. Some of the Democratic nominee's that have used this term over the past couple of decades are Mondale,Dukakis, and Clinton.
For those of us over 45 years old, when we hear this from the Dem's we just roll our eyes and chalk this blather up to just more of the same ol same ol liberal dishonesty.

I think we can all agree(lib an con alike)that there can be only One worst economy since the great depression. Right?

So what was the worst economy since the great depression? Once again if you are over the age of 45 years old, you already know the answer. For everyone else it was during the.... Carter administations reign of economic terror.

During this period unemployment reached over 11%.
The inflation rate was almost unbearable and the media had to invent a new term to discribe the over all feeling of hopelesness felt by the country. It was called the "Misery Index".

Compare our economy today to the Carter economy and ask yourself "are you ready to live it again", because many of the same bone headed mistakes made during the malaise years of Jimmy, have already been voiced by Obama and the secular socialist that are grooming him.

SARAH PALIN

.....CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN ...

.....One of the differences between Hillary and Sarah is that Hillary puts Party loyalty above principle as when she fell on her sword at the Convention for Barack ...this is the mistake that Rick Santorum made when he campaigned for Bush supported Arlen Specter, and it cost his seat in the Senate ...

.....Sarah puts her conservative principles above Party loyalty as several jailed corrupt Republicans from her State can attest to ...

.....In November I will go to the polls and vote for Sarah Palin to be our next Vice President .....COLOSSUS

Mean and Bitter

This subject line describes the comments of
Wise One (you should change your name), Truthhurts ( that's why are so sensitive on this Conservative board) and Nio ( your name calling is unnecessary)
I have yet to see anything constructive from their post....but then what do you expect from libs. Instead of responding with facts, they call all those that don't agree with them "liars and idiots"
That seems to be the trademark of a DemocRAT.

Liberal tactic
This one is for Disimm, who has called me "mean and bitter", who suggestes I am not wise, and who claims I am reacting the way I do because the "truth hurts."

Calling the conservative "mean" is a kneejerk liberal tactic.

Here is some truth and wisdom for you, Disimm.

McCain was wrong about the tax cuts, which saved us from a recession, possibly a depression. McCain admits he doesn't know jack about the economy. He says he supports the tax cuts now, but still doesn't have the foggiest idea why this is good.

McCain was wrong on drilling. He's still wrong on drilling ANWAR and global warming.

McCain was wrong on immigration. He has grudgingly conceded that "I'll build the damn fence" (who's the bitter one here?).

McCain SAYS he will appoint constructionist judges, but we all know that when the Democrats who run the Judicial Committee balk at one of his nominees he'll "go across the aisle" again and we'll wind up with another Souter, Kennedy, or Berger instead of a Roberts or Alito.

McCain also thought McCain-Feingold would get the money out of politics. Can you say "George Soros?"

McCain gets full credit for the war against terror, but even on this he undermined his own President on Gitmo.

McCain the media darling was WRONG on taxes, the economy (which he recently said was in a "shambles"), campaign-finance, drilling, and immigration. He stabbed his own President and party in the back on Gitmo and judges.

Even with the benefit of hindsight he can't get all of this right and cynically promises to change his position only to get elected, not because he believes in these things.

Nio is right. Go ahead and vote for him because he sucked you in with Palin. But when he turns RINO again on November 6 don't say you weren't warned by wiseone.

Dr. Sowell
Did you miss taking your medication, again?A person with a PHD from Harvard, in Economics, should not be this irrelevant.President F.D.Roosevelt introduced the "GI" bill which built America's middle class. Before WWII America had no middle class of which to speak. It was a group, subject to the "Whims" of businessman, who were ruthless.Subsequent to 1945, Americans gain skills, that they traded on for increased pay and upward mobility. The "Lies' you tell regarding Senator Obama's economic policies are obvious. Why?If some other American president had done what Mr.Obama is proposing, the American economy would be enjoying the same power that was given to the veterans of WWII.You hurt the country and every American, when you fail to tell the truth!WHY???

Bonnie
Palin still has more executive experience than Obama even if you disregard it as minimal. She is qualified for the position of VP; while Obama is not qualified for the position of President.

But, maybe you are right. Voting for Palin/McCain, because she is a woman, is very much like voting for Obama because he is black.

We should look at achievements, qualifications, character, associations (who is he beholden to), etc.... With Obama I see "the chicago way".

Palin is a Washington outsider and is not afraid to take on the "boys club" it seems. When Obama chose Biden, did that fit with the platform of "change" or did it remind you of "washington politics" as usual.

Some change.....

A vote for Obama would be American suicide. Which seems to be the goal of the left. So, Hope for Change lefties!

Retired Geek Reply #29
So how many replying to this editorial bothered to look at the link provided by Retired Geek? I did. I know the communists who lurk here and provide the communist talking points probably did not. The 45 bullets in the link demonstrate that the communists have mastered and implemented their plan for the incremental takeover of the late great US of A. Make no mistake about it we will become communist/democrat slaves or we will fight and die, if necessary, to prevent it. Personally I prefer the latter.

A little geography lesson--Alaska is the largest state in the union.

You Are What You Practice To Be
Wiseone offers, "For Mac Moore
I don't take instructions from the RNC and I don't take instructions from you."

So, what? Does that mean you are going to continue having a temper trantrum over spilled milk? Crying over the past won't change the future. Get over it!

There are only two viable candidates for President. Your actions will support one or the other.

The choice is simple, Obama or McCain. Choose. If you do not pick McCain, you are essentially a practicing Liberal.

For me the choice is easy, I pick the guy on the right, McCain.

McCain's 2nd Has More Cred's Than Obama
DWB offers, "Palin still has more executive experience than Obama even if you disregard it as minimal. She is qualified for the position of VP; while Obama is not qualified for the position of President."

Absolutely. This is funny stuff.

Obama thinks that he is running against Bush, and his minions are comparing the top of their ticket to McCain's second. Just like a bunch of Keystone Cops, they are bumping into walls.

This should be entertaining. Pass the popcorn!

For Mac Moore
"So, what? Does that mean you are going to continue having a temper trantrum over spilled milk?"

No. It means I'm not going to trust the guy who spilled it because he'll just spill it again.

When you resort to personal attacks and try to shove your agenda down the throat of everyone who disagrees with you, it is you who are practicing liberal tactics.

BemoaningWhat Could Have Been Is A Waste
wiseone offers, "Nio is right. Go ahead and vote for him because he sucked you in with Palin. But when he turns RINO again on November 6 don't say you weren't warned by wiseone."

So, what? Nothing new, here. You are preaching to the choir.

However, that boat has sailed -- Just like the North won the war, Truman got elected, and Bush got the Whitehouse in 2000. Arguing over what could have been, won't change history. It is over.

We are still left with a decision: Only two viable candidates --- Obama or McCain.

This is politics, not religion. We vote for who best will deliver in our direction.

For me, it is still oh, too, simple: McCain is on the right of Obama, so I will vote McCain. Anything less will assist Obama.

A Clear Choice: Right or Leff
Wiseone offers, "When you resort to personal attacks and try to shove your agenda down the throat of everyone who disagrees with you, it is you who are practicing liberal tactics."

Hey, you are the one that is trashing McCain, not me.

All that I am telling you is that there are only two viable candidates for president. Your efforts will support one over the other.

By not supporting McCain, you are supporting Obama. Thus, practicing a Liberal vote.

For me, this is simple stuff, I vote to the right, which is McCain.

I have never seen a great candidate, nor perfect one. In the primaries, I vote as far right as I can. However, when the dust settles and it is boiled down to two, I do know which viable candidate is on the right. And, that is how I vote. This time, McCain ---warts and all.

Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin...

Obama/Biden or McCain/Palin…”A No-brainer”

“A no-brainer”…yes…unfortunately we all have brains; it is just that many never learned to use them. They did not need too, for doing what feels good without thinking is how a liberal society flourishes and immediately begins its decline.

Obama states the obvious, unity, hope and change which do not need to be said, over and over again. However, Obama reminds me of others throughout history, with their ability to so quietly and enchantingly say one thing and mean and do another; and people will shake their heads in approval of the very things they oppose. What is amazing is they actually believe they have agreed with him. What is really very scary is that history has also proven time and again; that those willing to agree without questioning are the first to die by the millions.

This election will set the course of this nation for the next two decades. I fear that the voting public does not really understand the choice they face: one way holds the promise of security and entitlements, but it carries a big price tag of more expanded governmental power at the expense of our individual liberties. My hope is that voters will choose the more difficult path of liberty and a sense for limited government; so that the American culture for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness may once again triumph.

Obama Is Seriously Mentally Ill
Cape Conservative posted this:

"How he had the "audacity" to put himself in the "temple" just shows it is all about Barack, nothing more! Wonder why he didn't have his grandmother on stage with him to celebrate this spectacular achievement - one, that without his grandparents' help, would never have made!"

You got it Cape. Obama is the Supreme Narcissist. He will never allow anybody to share the Spot Light or The Camera's Flash with The Messiah. This particular Mental Illness is accompanied with Delusions of Grandeur.

A Narcissist is totally in Love With Self, and cares nothing for anything or anybody else.

A Sociopath has No Conscience and can Lie and never make a ripple on a Polygraph Machine.

This particular character trait is almost always found in Serial Killers. Narcissism coupled with the fact that he is Sociopathic, makes him the most dangerous man in America today. If he were just a regular stooge in the U.S. Senate or Illinois state senate, you could ignore his mental illnesses and his ignorance, but just the fact that he has even been elevated to the status as Candidate for the presidency, is very dangerous for this country.

Obama was handpicked by his Communist Handlers for this time in history, and the Communists in the Democrat Party handpicked this Puppet because they Know he Knows Nothing, and as long as they Allow Him The Spotlight, that he will do and say anything they, The Democrat Communists Tell Him To Say and Do.

We have to make certain that this Sociopathic Narcissist never has an opportunity to mis-represent this country as POTUS. Get Out The Vote and Vote No To Obama and Vote No to Any Body that Supports him Locally, in your State, and at the Federal Level of government.

We have to clean up our country by ridding our system of Liberals and then Abolishing All The Laws and Agencies of Government that They Created. We are a Republic, Not A Communist Welfare State.

Alaska
It is much larger than any borough of New York City. True it has only 670.000 people. But it is very large.
Iran is a large country and has 70 million people-more than any European country. Germany had only 80,000 million. It had no oil and no money-Iran has plenty of both. During WWII Japan had 90,000,000 if I remember correctly. It had no oil either.
DWB

Thank you Dr. Sowell
I truly appreciate your fine article.

With all the discussion about Gov Palin being only a heart-beat away from being President it occurs to be that if Obama became President and something happened to him, Nancy Pelosi would be only a heart-beat away from being President. Now that's scary!!

Something To Smile About
After months of agonizing about the Republican Party and John McCain as the candidate,I have finally found something to cheer for.

Palin is not perfect as politicians go,but is so much better than the Democrat candidate. Both of them. Both are 'motor-mouths' who will find it hard to keep their feet out of their mouths.

They have nothing to say but will say it anyway. The Democrat Party has sunk just as low as their lapdogs, the news media and the entertainment industry. They have no redeeming factors and are socialist wannabe's.

The Audacity Of Hype. Nobama!
After this weekend I am once again interested in the presidential election cycle. B. Milhous Obama has brought Chicago street politics brass knuckles to a hockey game. Bad luck for the white-guy who is half black.

KISS MY WRIST if Sarah Barracuda isn't going to feast on Irish heinie and Chitown pork.

Gov Palin as Vice President
Dr Sowell
Another very fine article. Senator McCain made a very wise choice in Gov Palin. She will make a very good showing in any debate. Senator McCain and Gov Palin will come out on top.
GS

Has McCain Read Sowell???
Would someone inside the McCain camp please hand copies of Prof. Sowell's works to the inner circle of economic advisors. We need rationale adult leadership on the economy. All they need to do is to listen to THE PROFESSOR.

Thomas Sowell; Thank you sir for a great education

A Real Change Story Actualized
Editorial to the "Richmond Times Dispatch"

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate MY independence day and on July 4 I celebrate America's.

This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence. On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the US to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there.

In the late 1950's most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord." And when the young leader said, "I will be for change and I'll bring you change," everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"

But nobody asked about the change, so:
*By the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away.
*By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed.
*By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing.
*By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him.
*By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status.
*By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes.

Iran
Earlier this year I was thinking that I could settle for Hillary or Obama should the Republicans fail to field an electable candidate. I didn't take notice of Obama until he said he'd open discussions with Iran. I immediately thought of Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler. My God, so many are so uninformed on the complexities of the Mid East. I am extremely worried for our country - it's security.

Iran MORE dangerous than USSR
MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) worked against the USSR. It is meaningless against Iran. They can and will give a device to a terrorist group to explode in an American city. This done, they will claim no knowledge of the device or its origin. They will claim knowledge it is from Pakistan or North Korea or stolen from Russia. Who do we strike back against? Do we destroy Tehran's 7 million people when we are uncertain? Even were we to do this, their belief we will not is the problem. Also, as in Iraq, we have no quarrel with most Iranians - they are largely Westernized, but content to watch HBO on their satellites with the shades drawn while madmen rule their country. I repeat: even were we to do this, their belief we will not is the problem.

The reason it doesn't work
is that the Iranian president is mentally deranged and convinced that by destroying Israel he will bring about the return of the "hidden imam" and usher in a future of Islamic rule over the world.

You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans.
And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never in America fall for a young leader who promised change without asking, "WHAT change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?"

Would we? Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

The "Ill informed" Bush is criticized non-stop for failing to develop a back strategy in Iraq. I'm sure there are many backroom discussions in newsrooms around the country on the topic, but we don't hear any criticisms of the Axelrod campaigns apparent lack of a backup strategy for the "Yes we can!" theme that launched Obama. Everyone calls it an incredible campaign, and kudos need to be sent to Axelrod for defeating the Clinton machine, but Obama seems to be floundering on day to day issues these days...just like every other "brilliant" campaign I've ever seen.
