Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Internet provides vast amounts of information but it can also spread vast amounts of misinformation, or even deliberately misleading disinformation.

For more than two weeks, scarcely a day has gone by without e-mails pouring in to me, asking about columns that someone has written and brazenly spread around the Internet with my name on them.

Most of these e-mails have come from regular readers who are savvy enough to recognize columns that have a different style and substance from my own columns.

We usually think of "identity theft" as involving using someone else's name for economic fraud. But identity theft can be used for political fraud as well-- as in this case.

Creators Syndicate, the authorized distributor of my column, is investigating this situation, and it has been like trying to unravel a mystery in a detective story.

First of all, they discovered that there was a blogger on the Internet making unauthorized distributions of not only my column, but also of columns from the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Universal Press Syndicate and the Washington Post. But there was no way to contact that blogger directly.

Since the blogger who posted the recent phony column uses the facilities of Google, an e-mail was sent to Google, which brought a response from people identified only as "The Blogger Team," who declared: "We strongly believe in freedom of expression, even if a blog contains unappealing or distasteful content or presents unpopular viewpoints."

We are all against censorship but the right of free speech does not cover libel, threats or identity theft.

Creators Syndicate's attorney-- Charles Adamek of Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP in Los Angeles-- pointed out in a formal reply that Google has itself created rules for people who set up blogs, and that not enforcing those rules means accepting "this blogger's activity in misappropriating Dr. Sowell's identity and passing off writings as if they were Dr. Sowell's when they are not."

That message brought another e-mail reply from the same anonymous Blogger Team, essentially repeating what had been said before: "We strongly believe in freedom of expression, even if a blog contains unappealing or distasteful content or presents unpopular viewpoints."

Finally, this situation came to the attention of Editor & Publisher magazine, the leading trade publication of the newspaper industry.

On August 15th Dave Astor of Editor & Publisher posted an account of what had happened under the title, "Blogger's 'Impersonation' of Columnist Leads to Creators-Google Tussle."

This account also said, "Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 e-mails from 'The Blogger Team' at Google indicated that the company may finally be looking into the problem. But the piece attributed to Sowell remains on the blog as of this afternoon-- Aug. 15th."

This was more than two weeks after the phony column was posted and more than ten days after Google was notified by the attorney for Creators Syndicate.

Finally, on August 18th, Dave Astor of Editor & Publisher posted another account with the headline, "Blog No Longer Posting Wrongly Attributed Sowell Piece."

What is surprising to me is that the bogus column sent out with my name on it has been spread around the Internet in a chain letter, which means that people are passing on something to others when they have no way of knowing whether it is for real or a hoax, much less whether they might get drawn into a lawsuit.

The implications of this episode reach well beyond the newspaper industry. Everyone should be concerned about Internet anarchy in which anybody can pretend to be anybody else, unless something is done to stop it.

If hoaxes like this go unchecked, who can believe anything they see on the Internet? What good would the Internet be then?

If the people who control Internet web sites do not do anything, is that not an open invitation for government to step in? And does anybody want politicians to control what can go on the Internet?

Anarchy on the internet
The author's purpose is showing us that some one sends a hoax email to the other people. And they write something to post on the internet but use the others' name.
Two examples:
-Since the blogger who posted the recent phony column uses the facilities of Google, an e-mail was sent to Google, which brought a response from people identified only as "The Blogger Team," who declared: "We strongly believe in freedom of expression, even if a blog contains unappealing or distasteful content or presents unpopular viewpoints."
-What is surprising to me is that the bogus column sent out with my name on it has been spread around the Internet in a chain letter, which means that people are passing on something to others when they have no way of knowing whether it is for real or a hoax, much less whether they might get drawn into a lawsuit.

Devil's Advocate
Let me play the devil's advocate. Since we haven't seen the text of the letter sent by the attorney, we don't know it was phrased. We know the intent per Dr. Sowell, but not the content.

Imagine a group of overworked, underpaid people sitting in a sweat shop replying to the thousands and thousands of complaints that Google gets. They read as few words as possible and select a form letter they hope will reply to it. I have received many of those.

On the other hand, since this article was attributed to Dr. Sowell, if he complained of copyright violation, they may have taken it right down.

Who knows?

There's no stopping a hoax
When even the editors of major publications regularly pass on press releases, hoaxes and urban legends, there's no reason to believe most people will be skeptical of something arriving in their inbox.

It gets worse, though. I regularly check stuff people send me and let them know when its bunk, which is 90% of the time. Not surprisingly, people will stop sending me stuff, but much to my surprise I found that they were still sending it out without copying me! They were uncomfortable having me send a mild rebuke so they didn't copy me, but they would still pass on untruths as if it was some bizarre compulsion.

When in Doubt, Snopes.com
Getting information off the internet requries a lot more caution on the part of the reader than does other sources. I regard any chain letter as fraud until proven otherwise. There are some useful fraud detection tools out there such as snopes.com to help with determining if a story is true of if the author linked to it is valid. These 3rd party investigators do the leg work on validating information and sources, then make it easily searchable for everyone else.

internt anarchy
I received the article Tom is referring to and cold tell by reading it that he hadn't written it. The first paragraph was the same as one of his "random thoughts" articles, but after first para, knew it wasn't his writing Warren Nickerson

Google has so harmed Sowell.
They harmed him by leaving the post up for weeks after they knew it was phony. A lot of people probably thought Sowell really wrote it. Google wouldn't leave stuff up if they knew it was somebody else pretending to be Sowell, would they?

Well, yes they would. And there's the harm.

Internet neutrality
The Internet MUST remain free.
See "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" by John Perry Barlow at http://homes.eff.org/~barlow/Declaration-Final.html.
See also Save the Internet at http://www.savetheinternet.com.
Improve your own computer skills, don't ask "government" to punish speech you disagree with.
This is the information age. If we allow a few control freaks to demand that "government" control the Internet, individual freedom is doomed.
It's SOP for posters on talk strings to use phony names. Sowell should stop worrying, his fans, like me, can easily tell if something was actually written by the good doctor or not. I buy Sowell's books, I don't listen to i-d-i-o-t-s claiming to be Sowell.
DON'T be tempted to look for "government" solutions here. Cyberspace is a domain where free thought and free speech (demonized by lawyers, politicians and other s-c-u-m as "anarchy") reigns, and it desperately needs to stay that way if humankind is to achieve its full spiritual and intellectual potential.
The reason DEMS want to control the internet is so they can limit its use to promote steal-and-redistribute socialism.
THAT worries me infinitely more than some k-n-u-c-k-l-e-h-e-a-d falsely claiming to be Sowell.
Part of being a competent cyber citizen is trusting nothing but logic and your own common sense.
Sowell has not been diminished in my opinion. He's still tops in my book! I just don't see much of a problem. If there is one, fix it on a case-by-case basis, but don't try to use the police powers of the state to regulate and control thought and speech.

Kirk
Google has not "harmed" Dr. Sowell. The so far nameless slug who did the plagerism has done the harm.

At worse, Google only aided and abetted once they knew that the "harm" was ongoing and did not take action to stop it.

What shall we do now?
Dear Dr. Sowell,

As citizens of the Internet, just as we are citizens of our country, failure of laws extant results from our failure to prosecute them.

I don't think Google’s slow response to your entreaties is because Google chooses to be a complicit law-breaker. However, Google is negligent in regard to the law. You are right in pressing prosecution against Google. Google should pay, not because it is evil, but because it has harmed you as a result of negligence in regard to law that already exists.

As in our communities and country the multiplication of laws is rarely the correct reaction to unlawful behavior, neither is it the answer on the internet. The answer is good citizenship combined with an acute sense of freedom. As citizens we ought to become indignant enough to react with an appropriate level of passion and action anytime breaches of law or propriety are imposed upon us.

What now? I am going to take the time to verify the content and the sourcing of forwarded information; it only takes a few seconds. For anything that doesn't pass muster I am going to respond back appropriately; I will request that the forwarder personally check sources before forwarding or that he refrain from forwarding gossip. [If the forwarder is my mother my suggestions to her will be heavily veiled.] If a law has been broken then I will uphold the law, even if it means forwarding the offending material, including its chain of addresses, to the offended party.

The internet is a microcosm of our society. Because certain freedoms are so easily exercised there, and therefore more easily abused, the internet is an important front in the continuing fight for freedom and liberty. Because of the easiness offered by the internet, our indignance to affronts against our liberty on it should be easily activated to take action, whether those affronts be from government dysregulation or from unlawful acts of internet citizens.

Thank you for you, your mind, and your pen.

Wow! Scary!!
I was sorry to hear about this false article that was posted in Mr. Sowell's name, and Google's subsequest lackadaisical attitude toward the event.

Just thought that I would take this opportunity to thank Mr. Sowell for his articles. His are the first I look for and read each week.

I certainly would hate to see his reputation trashed by some cowardly blogger somewhere. I am not in favor of government regulation of the Internet, but too many things of this nature will definitely invite government regulation and there would go more of our individual freedoms.

Anyway, thank you, Mr. Sowell, for your enlightened and educated articles. I truly enjoy them, and I learn so much from them!!

Break the chain
Recently I recieved the email about BO that was attributed to Dr. Sowell. I immediately emailed the fellow who sent it and told him that it was False. His response, "Anything to keep BO from getting elected."

You have got to be kidding me
Mr. Sowell says that Internet anarchy needs to stop? What would the right wing conspiracy theorists do for fun?
Or the left wing for that matter?

Is the free market icon asking for government intervention to stop this heinous crime?

Or maybe he is suggesting that we the people stop plagiarizing his columns.

I think he is afraid of what the Internet can do to anyone, Lib. or Con. What a trouble life we lead when we bit ch about the things that done get back to you.

I personally will never quote a Sowell column again. Never did in the first place but I don’t want his lawyers on my back. I’ll bet they’re not trial lawyers though.

The owners of Google
Have shown themselves to be ultra-liberals, and since ultra-liberals believe that the end justifies the means, it doesn't surprise me that Google would defend stealing someone's name in order to propagate an idea that I am sure Dr. Sowell would not produce himself. In other words, steal Dr. Sowell's reputation to dress an odious idea with some kind of legitimacy. Google seems very brave hiding behind "the blogger team", but they weren't so much protective of free speech when asked by China to censor themselves. They did it in a heartbeat. That is what is at the heart of contemporary liberalism: hypocrisy.

Imitation as Flattery, Not to Fraud
Clearly ID Theft for Politics is a preferred Democratic stunt. They are all things to all people, and a contradicting paradox to everyone. Is this unification? Is this the best of the west?

Obvious solution
Get most of your news from reputable sites like Real Clear Politics or Townhall, and lend guarded credence to bloggers only after a period of probation.

90% of all the chain letters
sent around the internet are either myths or scams. I normally delete any of them sent without reading them. As for "news" promalgated on blogs, I always check the facts via independnent sources. Most blogs that I read are very good about checking facts and printing retractions when they are wrong. Sites that I like for real news are Little Green Footballs, Ace of Spades, Newsbusters, Flopping Aces, and BMBEWS. There are others but these are the main ones.

As for lawyers getting into the internet, LOL, that has already happened long ago.

Don't Worry
Mr. Sowell, as a believer in free markets, I am surprised you don't have more faith. If this is truly a big problem, someone will notice the market opportunity or niche, and provide a product or service that will prevent this from happening. I don't know enough about computers to have even an incling of how this would work, but I have a lot of faith in the free market to solve this problem.
The last place we ever want to go is the government since their solutions are myopic, political, and slow. After all, the feds have done a great job eradicating drugs, now, haven't they?

hmmmm
I notice that artists often put their name across the face of their painting online to protect the image from piracy. I wonder if the same idea would work for authors, a watermark. If the identifiable watermark wasn't present you would know it was a hoax. It would have to be something behind the text that they couldn't reproduce.

Yes, the Dems want Internet control
Dr. Sowell askes if anyone would favor controlling what goes on with the Internet and the answer is a resounding 'yes' from the Dems. They would shut down townhall in a nanosecond if they could.

Democrats say they support free speech. However, their actions do not support that statement. They do not have any tolerance for opposing viewpoints and prefer not to discuss them. They would pass the fairness doctrine immediately if given the chance.

Sowell is pure class
and the fake stuff quickly reveals itself as having no Sowell! Many folks have been corrected, for my part.

Bravo good man!
I was able to find a copy of this forgery, and after reading it, I can understand why Dr. Sowell is so upset. The forgery reads as if as 15 year old wrote it.

I do commend Dr. Sowell's principled stand to oust the forger. Action such as this is unacceptable. Since there are few legal recourse other than civil, his "lawyering up" is certainly appropriate.

I don't mind that he does this simply due to having the creator's syndicate behind him either...whilst I don't have this power behind me, Dr. Sowell's action helps to protect me. Make an example of others so as to reduce the poor behavior.

Think of his actions as you will...but it shows that Sowell is NOT a hypocrite.

What if it was Page or Brin?
What a bunch of hypocrites. What if the phony blog column had been attributed to Larry Page or Sergey Brin? Something tells me that Google would not have been so dismissive of it.

Dr. Sowell has all the considerable
high powered and high priced resources of a major publishing SYNDICATE to protect his name and prose. That should be enough. All it took was this column to advise people of the Truth.

Lawyering up the Internet is not going to do anybody but the powerful, those already in control of most of the media, any good. Sowell should know this.

Let the Lawyers get their camel nose, even in a supposedly "just" cause like Sowell's, under the tent and you can kiss our Freedom goodbye.

To me the whole joy of the net is being able to say EXACTLY what you think and to tell to go to hell who you want to tell to go to hell.

Lawyers would rule the world if they could and we let them. Kill them all.

the big mick

Elder's wisdom
Dr. Sowell is but a few months younger than I. We were both Marine photographers in the Korean Police Action era. His remarkable success since those days far exceeds mine. I greatly admire his thought processes and his amazingly cogent conclusions. It is obvious why he would never expose himself to the political chaos running for office entails. Though his insight would be of immeasurable benefit to our nation, it's understood. Let us all thank him for sharing his wisdom.

Cap'n Jacq'

Dr. Sowell made an interesting point...
in the very last paragraph of this article. One must wonder, why do these morons go to the trouble to impersonate an author, especially a brilliant author whose work is easily identifiable?

The answer: to create chaos. If these liberals can create enough chaos, then the government HAS to control everything to calm the chaos they just caused! It's quite clever, really, and liberals have been using this tactic since day one. This is why they want the economy to be bad, they want our soldiers to lose in Iraq, why they want to pump taxpayer dollars into dysfunctional companies to keep them alive (Fannie and Freddie). They WANT the destruction, so that they can tell Americans that only THEY can fix it. When they get elected, they will keep the destruction going to increase their power and keep themselves in office.

This same thing applies to the internet. They want to own it, so they must create chaos in order to do so. Don't buy into it, Dr. Sowell. Don't sue them because the result will be just more legislation from the bench from our very own dysfunctional Judicial branch. Just have faith that your devoted readers know your writing when they see it.

Hoax-artists think they're so smart...
...and they're from the same class of losers who like to spread viruses, etc. just to damage other people's software and/or property.

Although much of these types of smears, attacks and disinformation will not be prosecuted, WE can all help.

"Truthorfiction.com" and the "Snopes" websites are both good for checking the validity of E-mails. Anyone who unconditionally trusts information received in an E-mail is a bit naive to begin with.

The other thing you can do is go to the FBI's website and report suspected malicious behavior. They have an area where you can submit anonymous tips.

It's my secret weapon against Internet losers. They don't realize that - just by connecting to the Internet - much of what they say and do is archived in servers across America in a lovely little audit trail that leads right back to their IP address.

Much of their mischief thus crosses state (and sometimes international borders).

If they are caught, they should be prosecuted.

Each and every one of them.

Dr. Sowell, I too got
that email. I was immediately suspicious that it was not your work and deleted it without forwarding.

Anytime we get things in email that do not have links to the original should be looked upon as suspicious.

Didn't you ever hear the expression...
"Don't believe everything you hear."? This is no different. Unless there is monetary gain, I wonder if you can sue the perp. I would not want any federal beurocracy to engage in editing internet web pages. Think we have a fascist problem now, just wait if that happens.

P.S. I think factcheck.org and snopes are a great way to address these issues.

Google blogs
Just a few days ago there were several postings on AtlasShrugs by bloggers complaining that their blogs had been shut down by Google. The bloggers all said they were conservatives and had posted some unflattering items about Obama. After multiple complaints to Google their sites were up and running a few days later. How odd that multiple sites were so easily shut down and this fraud remained for weeks. Does it say something about the priorities of the "Blogger Team" at Google?

Honesty on the Internet
I think the fundamental problem here is that people are not used to the anarchy which is the Net.

Think about it: the old folks still brag about how they never had to lock their front door when they were little. Well, that's a bygone era. Today, everybody knows, LOCK yer frikkin DOOR.

The Internet is still a relatively new phenomenon, a technology with unprecedented explosive growth and acceptance. As little as 10 years ago, you expected technology companies to have a website, but few others. Today, if your company doesn't have a website, IT DON'T EXIST.

So I'm thinking we're just on the bleeding edge of the social changes necessary to accommodate all this stuff. Consider, as an analogy, we're the first community who's discovered that we'd better lock our doors. We're the first community to need to tell our kids not to talk to strangers.

Maybe we didn't used to need to lock our doors; maybe we were able to trust people we'd never met before. That's all nice and nostalgic and all, but these days we lock our doors without even thinking about it.

We need to start thinking of the Internet in similar terms. Lock your doors. Don't trust strangers. Stay out of certain neighborhoods. Don't believe everything you hear.

Internet Scams
My niece is sending me garbage all the time. I always check her stuff on snopes.com or search for "urban myths". When all else fails, using Google with an exact word sample in quotes usually works.

It generally takes less than 5 minutes to debunk most of this garbage. So I asked my niece, why don't you spend the 5 minutes to check this crap out before sending it to everybody in your address book? She says, "That's what I have YOU for!"

Oy.

FIVE MINUTES, people, that's all it takes to confirm or debunk this crap. PLEASE invest the five minutes before you forward garbage all over the 'Net.

theBaron -- irt PopUp Ads
I've been using Firefox now for a long time.

I don't have a specific ad-blocker, but I use the "NoScript" plug-in that lets you selectively block or allow java-script from particular web-sites. It protects you from malicious java-script on an "opt-in" policy, i.e., it assumes "no" until you tell it otherwise.

Since virtually all pop-up ads require java-script, disabling it for the web-site disables the pop-ups.

I still see the banner ads, altho I know there are plug-ins that will even deactivate those, but I figure, hey, *somebody* has to pay the bills. I even visit the banner ad sites once in a while, and I may even buy something ... eventually.

But NO POP-UPS. I HATE those. That's like going to the airport and having the Hari Khrisha jump in your face.

Culture of Dishonesty
We are living in a culture of epidemic-proportions dishonesty--on every level of society.

Satan is the father of lies.

As McCain spoke to Rick Warren, "Defeat it." Defeat evil. Defeat lies. Defeat all evil, starting with what is still within us.

As the wise men say, Happiness is an Inside Job.

Your postings
I frequently refer people to Dr. Sowell's columns, but I don't post the column itself. I simply post a link to the column.

On forwards and hoxes
Maybe this gives Sowell some sympathy for Barack Obama, the continual victim of these kind of hoaxes?

I'm glad I am in a circle of people who do not send email forwards, period. I think I grew out of that after my first year of having email.

The Hoax Email
I received it myself about two weeks ago. I erased it and sent a message back to the person who sent it to me that it was not by Sowell. He supposedly sent the message to all the people he had sent it to. Hopefully it will get the word around sooner or later.

It annoys me too when someone said I said something I didn't - even if I might agree with it.

Email hoaxes
I check every email that is attributed to a famous person on either snopes.com or urbanlegends.com - usually they are hoaxes and I feel the need to "reply to all" with a link to the website that shows it to be a hoax after all. It amazes me how many people I would normally consider reasonable and intelligent will fall for the craziest rumors. Hopefully, society will get more familiar with these things and it will dry up.

Don't worry too much, Dr. Sowell.
It is a conundrum that in a free society a certain amount of criminal behavior must be expected. It is the price we pay for being free. Not fun, but better than the alternative.

People who know your writings would not fall for a phony. People who get hoodwinked will find out the truth eventually.

There are ways to check facts. Urban Legends, Snopes and some other verifying websites are pretty good about rooting out the lies for anyone who wants to check.

Wow!

That's scary! Reverse plagerism! What will those Lefties think of next?

TrueRedHead
Thanks for the tip, mate!

Other readers here should consider it, I saw a post over under Walter Williams column that complained about all of the spam here now at TH.

Obama delenda est.

Double Standard?
I would like to have seen Google's response had the name of a liberal icon been besmurched...

Disinformation
This is an old left wing tactic possibly perfected by the Soviets. Spread enough lies and attribute them to others, including your enemies; and discredit any legitimate sources or points of view.

The rise of blogs by all viewpoints, but especially examples like huffpost or dailykos have spread disinformation and agenda-driven falsehoods far and wide. I believe this goes back to Stalin's "ends justify the means" approach, widely adopted by today's left.

Pop-ups
Get Firefox browser with ad-blocker, Baron It really DOES help!

(We now return to our regular programming)

Google for freedom of speech? Since when
Didn't they agree to censor content, just to get approval for access to Communist China?

They're for profit, and will claim whatever high-sounding principles they want, as long as it doesn't interfere with their business.

I hope Dr. Sowell takes them to the cleaners.

Obama delenda est.

Now, as to this topic...
I am surprised when I hear radio hosts, who ought to know better, read these hoax pieces and accept the attribution to Dr. Sowell. It seems to me that anyone who reads his column, his books, and has heard him speak anywhere, can tell right away that they're fakes.

Jim Quinn, for example, on his show The War Room out of Pittsburgh, originally billed one as "a letter by Thomas Sowell". He subsequently corrected himself in a later broadcast, but I thought, as a host, if someone sent me the piece, I would have either used the term "alleged" or otherwise shown skepticism about its origin, or I would have researched it (or had a staffer research it, if I had a staff), before going live with it.

C'mon, guys, do your homework! This isn't Air America, we demand more from our talk shows!

Obama delenda est.

Sorry, it's off-topic, but...
...do all of the popups and other ads here on TownHall bother anyone else? I know they need to pay the bills, but this site is getting as bad as some of the other ones.

It used to be a nice, quiet virtual reading room, the cyber-equivalent of a nice study, with big leather chairs, and old oak paneling, but it's turning into the magazine rack at the 7-11.

And do we really need a TownHall magazine? Why should I have paper delivered to my house, when I can access the site on the Web? That's a big reason why I don't get a newspaper subscription. While we're at it, why don't we bring back cave paintings, too?

Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Obama delenda est.

Dr. Sowell
I received one such e-mail of the hoax. As I read the first paragraph, I realized there was no way you would have written that article. I sent a reply to all in the e-mail, letting them know it was a hoax. I could almost hear the palpable relief through the screen!!

Thanks for the column today.

Dear Thomas Sowell
I had a friend send me one of those Hoax e- mails .
I wrote them back and said that didn't read like Thomas Sowell at all .
So I went to all of your ""Words "since I have most of your Books and follow you closely .It was a Hoax without qustion .
We even exchanged emails on my Birthday several years ago .I as a White Boy would have chosen you as my Dad . Remember ?
You sent me a wonderful email saying You are my son by proxy .
