Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Now that the two parties have finally selected their presidential candidates, it is time for a sober-- if not grim-- assessment of where we are.

Not since 1972 have we been presented with two such painfully inadequate candidates. When election day came that year, I could not bring myself to vote for either George McGovern or Richard Nixon. I stayed home.

This year, none of us has that luxury. While all sorts of gushing is going on in the media, and posturing is going on in politics, the biggest national sponsor of terrorism in the world-- Iran-- is moving step by step toward building a nuclear bomb.

The point when they get that bomb will be the point of no return. Iran's nuclear bomb will be the terrorists' nuclear bomb-- and they can make 9/11 look like child's play.

All the options that are on the table right now will be swept off the table forever. Our choices will be to give in to whatever the terrorists demand-- however outrageous those demands might be-- or to risk seeing American cities start disappearing in radioactive mushroom clouds.

All the things we are preoccupied with today, from the price of gasoline to health care to global warming, will suddenly no longer matter.

Just as the Nazis did not find it enough to simply kill people in their concentration camps, but had to humiliate and dehumanize them first, so we can expect terrorists with nuclear weapons to both humiliate us and force us to humiliate ourselves, before they finally start killing us.

They have already telegraphed their punches with their sadistic beheadings of innocent civilians, and with the popularity of videotapes of those beheadings in the Middle East.

They have already telegraphed their intention to dictate to us with such things as Osama bin Laden's threats to target those places in America that did not vote the way he prescribed in the 2004 elections. He could not back up those threats then but he may be able to in a very few years.

The terrorists have given us as clear a picture of what they are all about as Adolf Hitler and the Nazis did during the 1930s-- and our "leaders" and intelligentsia have ignored the warning signs as resolutely as the "leaders" and intelligentsia of the 1930s downplayed the dangers of Hitler.

We are much like people drifting down the Niagara River, oblivious to the waterfalls up ahead. Once we go over those falls, we cannot come back up again.

What does this have to do with today's presidential candidates? It has everything to do with them.

One of these candidates will determine what we are going to do to stop Iran from going nuclear-- or whether we are going to do anything other than talk, as Western leaders talked in the 1930s.

There is one big difference between now and the 1930s. Although the West's lack of military preparedness and its political irresolution led to three solid years of devastating losses to Nazi Germany and imperial Japan, nevertheless when all the West's industrial and military forces were finally mobilized, the democracies were able to turn the tide and win decisively.

But you cannot lose a nuclear war for three years and then come back. You cannot even sustain the will to resist for three years when you are first broken down morally by threats and then devastated by nuclear bombs.

Our one window of opportunity to prevent this will occur within the term of whoever becomes President of the United States next January.

At a time like this, we do not have the luxury of waiting for our ideal candidate or of indulging our emotions by voting for some third party candidate to show our displeasure-- at the cost of putting someone in the White House who is not up to the job.

Senator John McCain has been criticized in this column many times. But, when all is said and done, Senator McCain has not spent decades aiding and abetting people who hate America.

On the contrary, he has paid a huge price for resisting our enemies, even when they held him prisoner and tortured him. The choice between him and Barack Obama should be a no-brainer.

One half inadequate republican
While I admire Dr. Sowell greatly, I can't state that McCain is completely inadequate. We are certain of 4 years of Jimmy Carter on steroids with an Obama presidency, as well as race relations being the worst since the Civil War.

However. McCain knows that yes, even if it really did take 100 years to survive, we have to commit to survive and not use that time to "change" anything but going back to the Constitution being the law of the land, and not the 3000 judges an Obama will essentially appoint as he states Justice Ginsberg is his model judge. Just think of that for a moment!

I heard Lt. General Richard Norwoski speak in Charlotte today. What a true patriot and a gifted leader. We face a war where our enemies will gladly bring it here. This serpent with a tongue and his psychotic-eyed wife think they can talk away our problems with our enemies. This is yet again what happens when Americans let the children into the big league. But this time, we will pay a terrible price as we are still paying for Carter's presidency.

We should not know Obama's name. He reminds me of Clinyon in that regard..."The nominee is who?". But through extensive corruption in Chicago we have a lair and an opportunist as the democrat's nominee. He is a light-weight and as David Allen White stated on Hugh Hewitt's show, "Not a particularly bright man".

Pray...pray hard...AND VOTE!

Great column.
The Dems have managed the impossible, a candidate worse the Hillary. I didn’t think that was possible.

Scary Scenario
Dr. Sowell relates with clarity, simplicity and extreme force, the potential consequences of this next election.
Nobody has said it better.

Though we may be scared, we must not be paralyzed. Now is the time to mobilize, volunteer, contribute.

Facing Reality
We may or may not be successful in preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons. And it is a safe bet to say that if or when Iran has them, it will be just a matter of time before the other terrorists have them as well.

Some time ago, then presidential candidate Tom Tancredo offered a suggestion that was roundly criticized because it was not "politically correct" or sufficiently sensitive. But the time has come to resurrect this idea, which is to announce to the Islamic world that if even one nuclear weapon is detonated in America, the Holy cities of Mecca and Medina will be turned into glass parking lots, regardless of which nation or group launches an attack on America. We would give the cities' residents adequate warning to evacuate the cities to minimize loss of life, but the blame for the total annihilation of Islam's holiest sites could be placed directly at the feet of those who were so brazen as to launch an attack on America.

For anyone in our country to place the religious sensitivities of 1.2 billion Muslims above the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans is not only irrational and absurd, but suicidal as well.

Thank you
For presenting the truth, as horrifying as it is. But we have to acknowledge the possible so we're not blind-sided. How do we stop our enemies from killing us from the inside out?

Obama and McCain
Rod,

Comrade Obama is worse than Hillary and Carter combined.

Obama - would he stand up to Iran
I don't think the terrorists will decide not to bomb us because we have a dialog with them.

McCain is not ideal, he's not my favorite candidate, but when faced with the prospect of a Pres. Obama - I'll vote for McCain.

How long to keep this up?
The good doctor paints a clear and ominous picture.

I just can't play the game of 'lesser of two evils' anymore.

I cannot cast a vote for a person who will destroy the country a little slower than the other guy. I do not see a bright future for a USA filled with disloyal Mexicans, with a damaged economy as a result of green policies or with marriage meaning nothing. I won't vote for an angry man who admits he knows little of economics but think there should be no 'obscene' profits anywhere in the country.

Oh! Did I forget NAU too?

We are screwed in '08.

(I still hope McCain has some illness serious enough to have to pull out before the election and then he can recover after we get a resonable candidate. Pretty slim hope, hey?))

Nuclear War with Stateless Terrorists?
I think Dr. Sowell overstates the possibility of a "nuclear war" with stateless terrorists.

If they got a bomb, I have no doubt they would use it; all of the humiliation etc. that Dr. Sowell speaks of could also happen. But you need more than "a" bomb to sustain an actual *war*.

I just can't see anyone getting enough ordnance to maintain an actual *war*, unless they're associated with a state; and if they're associated with a state, we know where they are.

Like capital punishment, M.A.D. might not be an effective deterrent; but it keeps killers from killing again.

Religion vs. Religion
Tancredo's suggestions was not accepted, but we must ask ourselves, once that is done then what do we do? It is impossible to change the minds of a people who have had their beliefs for so long, yet Americans still try.

Okay
Well, that was great. I now feel like I have six months left to live. Screw those student loans.

Obama WILL be a lousy President, but...
...I cannot bring myself to vote for McCain unless he replaces President Bush's Council on Bioethics. I fear Bio-Luddism as much as I fear Islamofascism. I will write in Ron Paul.

I'm with FOWG
1. If Obama gets elected, advisors will explain to him that he can't actually do what he's promising regarding the middle east. His policy will be different than Bush's but not that different.

2. If Obama is elected, what GOP is left in the congress will fight him if he tries to move left. If McCain is elected the GOP will go along with whatever he wants and the Dems will go along with any leftward moves. We may end up more socialist with McCain than Obama. For evidence, compare the Clinton and Bush presidencies - especially on spending. Credit for limiting spending under Clinton goes to congress.

3. The GOP seriously needs a kick in the pants. If enough of us vote for a limited government 3rd party such as Libertarian or Constitutional - especially if it costs McCain a red state or two, maybe that will get the GOP to rectify its cranio-rectal impaction. I can't think of any other way to do it.

We survived Carter & Clinton, and got Reagan and the 94 revolution. We're screwed in 2008 - let's hope the GOP gets its act together for 2010 and 2012.

Bob Barr in 2008
Bobby Jindal in 2012

Obama vs McCain
There is no way that I will vote for Obama. It looks like I will vote against Obama by voting for McCain. Certainly not my first choice but it appears like it is my only choice!

McCain will be powerless to stop
Iran's nuclear program.

The next POTUS will be completely hamstrung in regard to Iran. The atmosphere, thanks to the MSM and the Democrats, is so poisoned against any military action, or even the threat thereof, that Iran has a clear path to nuclear weapons. The only thing standing in their way is Israel. And it's not a new phenomenon that the world sits idly by while expecting the Israelis to take care of what everyone else is too cowardly to handle.

And don't give me any "unnecessary war of imperialism" garbage. Even if that were true, the MSM and Democrats should have supported the war effort once we were engaged - or at least not actively undermine it and make it a political wedge. The Dems also voted to authorize a resumption of hostilities (never formally ended after the Gulf War) based on the same info the President saw. Intelligence is never certain, and every major intell agency in the world (and his own generals!) believed Saddam had WMD stockpiles. But the burden was on Saddam to comply with the cease-fire agreement. Plus there were other reasons for removing him, such as his firing on our planes and supporting terrorists (Palestinian suicide bombers for certain, and only the willfully naive believe that's where he drew the line).

Regardless, the Dems and the MSM diabolically mischaracterized everything they could to make it look like Bush was just satisfying some bloodlust of his. They were and are deeply dishonest in their remarks about this war. Paleo-conservatives who adopt their rhetoric and tactics should be ashamed of themselves.

If There Is a Limited Cgoice
"The choice between him and Barack Obama should be a no-brainer."

Dr. Sowell is absolutely correct!

But, the key to making sense this election is having a third choice - and we do! Chuck Baldwin, Constitution Party candidate! Then, it is another "no-brainer"!

We need to give up on the Republicans - Bush hasn't used force, and won't use force, against Iran when they have been the cause of a great number of our troops' deaths. If Bush won't what makes anyone think McCain will? Neither will secure our borders in war time! What is hard about judging what a President McCain would do? We've already seen the evidence!

Frightening
But true.

not to mention judges!
the difference between the kind of judges McCain & Obama will put on the bench is the difference between same sex vs traditional marriage; Kelo vs. repect for private property; polygamy vs. monogomy; respecting the constitution as written vs. twisting it to suit their own sensibilities.

WWIII
It appears to me that the nuclear threat from Iran is as real as the sky is blue. BHO thinks he can appease the radical Islamic terrorists to give up there weapons programs for nothing. When you dealing with someone who believes its a privilege to die for your beliefs, how do you negotiate with that? The writing is on the wall, and we're headed into another war with a nation that is far more prepared to blow-up Americans just as much they want to kill Isreali's.

If we don't wake up, and realize that Iran is just as bad as Nazi-led Germany, if not worse, we are all in for a big wake-up call. If you don't believe me, read the book "Showdown with Nuclear Iran" and findout for yourselfs wether they are really developing nuclear energy for peacefull purposes.

McCain may not be the best candidate, but at least he understands that Iran has to be stopped. BHO will open our nations defense to the terrorists, and we will be forced into another World War.

Self-Screwed?
If all the bloggers who say we are "screwed" in 2008 would start demanding that our supposed "conservative leaders" actually mention the name of the third party candidates, and have them indicate how they would deal with issues like Iran; then We the People could make a real decision about who of those available should lead this Nation in a time of peril.

These "leaders" are controlling the debate as maliciously as the MSM! They will cover only those candidates THEY want you to know about!
How is that tolerable? Essentially it is the same half-truth process the accuse the MSM of!

Where is it graven in stone that a third party candidate can't win? The media who are covering the election - the MSM and the alternate media also.

Pre-emptive surrender is unbecoming for patriots!

Third Party Candidates
have not won the Presidency, and very few have made it to congress. Teddy was the closest with his "Bull Moose" party, and he had already been President. There is nothing but loses in our actual history. Voting for a 3rd party is throwing away your vote. The Republicans came into being as the Whiggs collapsed - it was not an applicable "3rd Party" situation.

What happens to 3rd parties is their good issue(s) - ones that catch the public's attention in a significant way - get coopted by one or both of the main parties - Democrats and/or Republicans. 3rd parties are valuable for this service.

If you look over history, some ideas take a while to percolate and come to the fore. Flat tax is sounding more possible now than when Steve Forbes ran on the idea. It probably will take some more time until we see a serious, valid proposal fought over, but that day looks closer.

Reality check before November is a must! Those who say, "We lived through Carter" have no idea of the harm he caused. The War on Terror is in part the result of his presidency.

Choice, what choice?
300 Million people in America and we wind up with McCain and Obama?

The choice
Do we really want to elect the candidate that Bin Laden and the Hamas support?
Much as McCain is far from the best option, I will not vote for the terrorists candidate.

It really is that simple.

"...SHOULD be a no-brainer."
With strong emphasis on that modal verb.

Sad to say, but maybe Bush did too good a job preventing another 9/11.
Time is on their side. They can wait. They are smart. They know what they are waiting for. And it ain't John McCain.

Next President

NEXT PRESIDENT
By Joe Hernandez

The presidential race is on
The parties have spoken
The primaries are now gone
The democratic party seem broken

Who will it be among the two
Obama to the left or McCain to the right
Which of these men will lead America through
Who do we believe can carry Americas fight?

We must all take a stand and vote
We do not have the luxury not to
We must listen and take note
And exercise our vote to renew

Careful of what the media informs you
Forget what the politicians promise
Iran is the real threat known only to a few
The rest of us are doubting thomas

Iran is on the verge of having a nuclear bomb
Our options are beginning to get smaller
The Middle East can become our next Vietnam
Unless we have the courage to become Iran's mauler

Nothing else in the world will matter
If Iran develops the nuclear bomb
Terrorist will be free to scatter
Carrying out the orders of a dead Saddam

Obama will try to reach out and talk
But McCain will force their hand
Obama will balk at being a hawk
McCain understand that we need to take command

The window of opportunity is now
We cannot afford to miss this moment in history
With Obama's lack of experience and know-how
Dealing with terrorist states to him is a mystery

McCain understands what is at stake
He has proven that through the years
He calls a snake a snake
And does so without any fears

The choice before us is clear
Of this there can be no doubt
McCain has the experience to persevere
And to deal with our enemies with clout

It's Mr. Oprah VS. The P.O.W
Dr. Sowell has sketched a doomsday scenario for either President if elected, are we prepared for the possibility of dangerous times ahead.
A nuclear Iran will attempt to annihilate the Israeli's. According to Mahmoud the holocaust is a faked idea and there is no proof it actually happened and the entire Hollocaust Museum is photoshopped.
Now a world leader who thinks like this and wears sweater's with little alligator's on them isn't really dangerous until his 6000 centrufuges spin up enough weapon's grade uranium to make a bomb. So far, his contention is he's providing his people with increase energy needs, however the Iranian infrastructure is crumbling there hasn't been any new substantive building going on so where is this increased energy need coming from?
Our next President will have to deal with a nuclear terrorist scenario, for John McCain as a former P.O.W it should be no problems mon, for Barry who want's to talk to the terrorist, I've started to stock my underground bunker.

Mc Cain vs. Obama
Today is the 60th anniversary of my enlistment in the USN. Never has our nation faced such a choice in leadership s I see today.
Suffice it to say that only John Mc Cain will be able to save our constitutional Republic. Obama and his ilk will degrade our government to greater socialism, marxist income redistribution, give aways that destroy our economy, and dismantling of our Constitution and its eternal truths. Dem Liberals will rewrite it to reflect the will of the people.
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!
Remember that our forefathers fought hard to keep democracy out of our government as it leads to anarchy, a portent of our future under socialism. Think before you vote this November.
Shall we become socialist Euro-Weenie, anti-capitalist environmnetalists or shall we retain the proud traditions and institutions of our Conostitutional Republic?

Well DR. Sowell it has happended.
You have written a column for which I disagree. O'Vomit is truly bad, but MCLame is also truly bad for different reasons.

Just like the fact that, at most, O’vomit will get to appoint two liberal judges to replace two liberal judges, McLame will be able to do NOTHING with Iran (or any other terrorist nation). Ya'll can all give it up, Iran will have a nuclear weapon, the only question is the time frame. My estimate is within 5 years.

The libs like to make a big deal about the CIA estimate of the Iranians stopping their nuclear production program. What a joke! The CIA has become like the Republican Party, a political organization infested with liberal Democraps. Iran continues unabated in their enrichment program and even brags about it.

Anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of nuclear stuff knows that it is not difficult to build a nuclear weapon. Any high school physics student could build one as a class project if he had the materials. That is the hard part, getting the materials. That is also the part that Iran continues unabated on.

As for voting the lesser of the evils once again; if we continue that the two party system is dead (if it isn’t dead already). You see the Republicrat Party continues to go further and further to the left every election in search of that brain dead electorate who can’t decide until 3 min before pulling the lever. If we continue to pull the (R lever because they are somewhat less evil than the Commiecrats we will support that.

We MUST stop the leftward slide or the long term consequences will be much worse than a few years of O’Vomit.

Vic, Chris, Lestat
Really good, thoughtful posts. I find much to agree about with all of them. As a matter of fact, this is an excellent, serious discussion with great posts all around, that has not been interrupted thus far by trolls.

Vic & Chris, I'm simply not sure we have the luxury of time. If it were just me, I might agree and say, "enough", we have to stop the slide here and now.

But it's really about my son. If a nuclear bomb takes out an American city, or Al Queda takes over a school and slaughters all the kids and teachers, I want to at least be able to look him in the eye, and tell him in my heart of hearts I knew this day might be coming and I had cast my vote reluctantly for someone who I knew, for all his warts, at least took the threat seriously, and would attempt to respond to it in a serious manner.

Bob
With congress the way it is likely to be MClame is not going to be able to do anything.

We may have some hope if enough conservatives find heart in voting for a 3rd party to go to the polls and vote. The ones with real conservative Republicans running can then vote for a conservative congresman. That may prevent the Commiecrats from overwhelming both houses. (Note: I have a gerrymanded demo district and Grahamnasty running, not much choice).

Voting once again for the less evil (R) is the worse thing a conservative can do in 2008.

Hard Truth
Dr. Sowell hits it on the head again. If Iran gets even one bomb you can say goodbye to Israel. But then of course Israel will not let that happen. My only hope would be that Israel would show Iran's Prez what it feels like to have a nuke explode in your country. The unfortunate part would be all the "normal" people who would be hurt.

The first time I ever got to vote I held my nose and voted against McGovern in '72. Looks like I'll do it again this year.

The thought of Obama
as president scares the hail out of me. But then i read FOWG and Chris and have to consider that first, a return to conservative principles of fiscal restraint, reward of merit, and reality therapy is necesary, and nothing unites us like adversity. The final result of the big change Obama proposes is most likely to be recognition that he is full of it, as his pie in the sky promises get blind-sided by debt, demographics, dollar depreciation and deterioration of the economic engine that provides us our goodies. Illegal aliens are also a problem, but i couldn't make it start with D.

Vic
Same issue where I am. Voting locally is ALWAYS about choosing the lesser of two evils. True conservatives are extremely rare and sightings are few and far between.

3 boomers at sea
are the ace in the hole that ahmadinnerjacket has to deal with. If a nuke explodes in Israel, every city in the ME will be wiped out. If he is really crazy enough to pay that price, it would certainly shake up things, wouldn't it? The nuclear winter would certainly cool things off, for starters.

Sowell Wrong About McCain
Sowell is as wrong as can be about John McCain being an inadequate candidate. Of all the candidates, he was and is the most qualified to be Commander in Chief. Sowell talks about Americans being adrift in the face of the terrorism of the Islamic jihadists, but McCain is and has been the one candidate who can lead the country concernning that danger.

One ray of hope
is the consideration that actually the cat has been out of the nuclear bag since the fall of the iron curtain. I find it difficult to believe that with all the USSR warheads floating around, and oil money so common, the jihadis couldn't get a nuke if they want one. The difficulty most likely lies somewhere else. Fear of reprisal or destruction of muslim holy places. Talk is cheap, but despite the prevalence of dirt poor palestinian suicide bombers, few of the fat cats that are pulling the strings care to be martyrs. Its difficult to keep a secret when so many people must be involved. Several men charged with complicity in 9/11 are going on military tribunal trials soon if not now. It would take a determined fanatic to head up a plot to buy a bomb, even from Iran, and set up the network necessary to get it to the US and detonate it. Our hamstrung security is still inadequate, but its much better than pre-9/11.

The cancellation vote.
While I can't stand the thought of voting for the Maverick I figure pulling the lever for him will cancel out a vote for the other guy. The Maverick scares me but the Obamasia scares me more.

Jack
If the Sa'udis condemn the idea of a terrorist attack on America, I wouldn't blast Makka and Medina in retaliation against an Iranian-backed terrorist blast in America. I'd declare war and turn Iran's thirty largest cities and most important military bases into radioactive rubble, starting with Qom and Mashad. And, with the declaration of war, I'd say that whoever sends a penny to help the surviving Iranians sees his own bases and capital city go up in a mushroom cloud, too.

Obama would let babies die
if they were born alive during an abortion. He also supports partial birth abortion.

His positions are repellent.

I can't vote in any way that would give him a shot at the White House.

The unthinkable.

Dr. Sowell, thank you. You bring up something that many of us would rather not talk about... or even want to think about.

But we live in a dangerous world.

Most of us would not even be able to wrap our heads around the pure emotional anguish and the sheer hysteria that would follow... should, for example, a terrorist nuke inside a cargo ship anchored in one of our major ports ever happen to go off.

But that is precisely what could happen.

For national security reasons alone, this election is absolutely crucial. Then there are Supreme Court appointments, raising your taxes, new regulations, job losses and staggering new entitlements that are also looming.

And so the great question still remains... can we really afford the luxury of staying at home or voting third party?

I think not.

MRCMRC
The fact that you don't get it says all there is to say about your level of comprehension. In fact, it says volumes about liberals in general.

Or, maybe you are just living in a cave somewhere.

General: McCain weak on security?

Will this hurt McCain?

WashingtonTimes-The most senior retired military officer to back the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama, says the first-term U.S. senator will not give Sen. John McCain, a decorated war hero, a pass on the issue of national security in the fall campaign.

“It doesn’t take very long to uncover national security issues that McCain is weak on,” retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak told The Washington Times.

“For McCain to think he has a monopoly on virtue in the national security issue is going to be shown a pretty flimsy idea very quickly,” he said of the probable Republican nominee.

Fear Mongering
Sowell reduces the choice for this election to fear mongering. The fact is that if Iran gets a nuclear weapon it will be in part because we made Iran Stronger by helping to tilt the balance in favor by empowering the majority in Iraq and tying up our forces in an occupation. Manwhile by divering resources away from the real fight we have strengthened the terrorists and allowed them to regroup.

This policy brought on by a very conservative president and his team of neo-cons should prove once and for all that conservatives do not hold a monopoly on the best strategy for dealing with Iran. Obama will likely do a better job of dealing with Iran. Like everything else he will have to clean up the mess created by this administration.

McCain will represent a continuation of the failed Bush policies.

What else is there to say but .....
DITTO!

Forget all the platitudes and great performances / speeches by Obama! Forget about all the bias news media coverages. Forget about all the radical liberals.

And think about the future of our country! Do you really believe the terrorist are not very serious and can be very effective, IF WE LET THEM? If you stick your head in the sand, you will end up with a bomb in your behind and then BOOM - you, your children, your grandchildren (if there is anyone left to procreate) are doomed to live and die under radical terrorism! Folks this is SERIOUS business!

I just don't get it....
I am truly praying that Americans are smart enough to see through the "CHANGE" charade. McClain needs to hit hard and the Republican party had better go after BHO's miserable record - GET IT OUT THERE! Too many Americans do not study what is really behind a candidate and vote blind - KNOW WHAT YOU ARE VOTING FOR!! May we all pray that the outcome will be what is truly the best for America!

Onec again,
Thomas Sowell proves why Cal Thomas refers to him as the smartest man in America. Mr. Sowell has condensed this presidential election in a nutshell.

BHO
BHO, gag me.

NIRVANA, HERE WE COME. THAT'S ALL HE HAS AND IT WON'T HAPPEN.........

I WILL HAVE TO VOTE FOR SEN MCCAIN .......VJF

Yes it will be difficult
Yes, it will be difficult to curb the nuclear appetite of Iran. But is the failed Bush Administration policies that placed Iran in this favorable position. McCain was with Bush all the way in placing us in this position, why should we believe for one second that he will be able to deal with the Iran.

The first thing we need to do it to disentangle ourselves from the mess in Iraq. Then we can focus our attention on going after the real terrorists and any threat to take action against Iran will have credibility when Iran knows we are not tied down in Iraq. Then we need to stregthen and rebuild our military which has been abused with stop loss, and successive tours of duty. We will need to spend some money and that might require raising taxes so that we don't find ourselves more in debt to china.

Conservatives has their time they were in charge of all branches of government and they made mistake after mistake after mistake do why would the country trust them to get it right this time. I don't know if Obama will be able to solve the unsolvable but one thing is for sure more of the same failed policies of the Bush administration can only be worse.

mrc (most repugnant citizen)
Yep, therer you go....just keep your head in the sand or the clouds.

Winston Churchill
Dr. Sowell is as brilliant and as correct as Winston Churchill was in the years prior to WWII. Unfortunately, no one listened to him when it might have prevented the war. I fear that the American people will repeat the mistake of pre-war Europe and elect an inexperienced appeaser. Western civilization hangs in the balance while we are collectively behaving like Nero with our fiddles.

I respect Sowell so much that
maybe I will think twice on voting against McCain to express my displeasure with RINOism and the GOP. If anybody has true conservative credentials it is Doc Sowell, and if he feels this way it is worth considering. Listen folks, he makes some good points.

I wish he would turn his attention to another subject also, to wit: the systematic dismantling of higher education.

Where is my warranty?
I would like to follow Dr Sowell's advice and pull the lever for McCain...no, wait. I would not LIKE to do that, but maybe I COULD hold my nose and do it...if only I had some wisp of a gurantee that McCain the Maverick would appoint decent judges and hold the line in Iraq. Sadly, his m.o. offers me precious little assurance that he can be counted on to do ANYTHING other than cross the aisle and stick it to us, just when we need him most. (witness- the global warming issue)

History has proven that Republicans are almost as likely as Democrats to appoint liberals (or closet liberals) to the Supreme Court. (The jury's still out on Bush's appointments) What makes us think that McCain would fight for conservatives on the courts? I can picture him chuckling and grinning maniacally when he sticks it to us in this area as well!

With the utmost respect, Dr Sowell. You need to do more to convince ME!

CYEAROUT ---
You definitely make some good points. Much as I like Doc Sowell, on reflection the truth appears just as you assert -- RINOs are basically Dems. And an economy can be wrecked from the inside as much as the outside. Will have to wait and see . . . would help if McCain avoids Charlie Crist or other such liberal as his VP and goes with a Jindal or somebody. Truth be told, might not matter anyway.

Kepha
I hear you, but the anti-war atmosphere is so poisonous now that anyone who spoke in plain terms would be railroaded out of town as a "war-monger". If we were hit by a suitcase nuke, I believe that many would level their anger at Pres. Bush for provoking the terrorists, lying us into war, whatever, rather than being angry at the bombers. Whatever you think of his immigration and economic policies, he has tried to project a determined, strong front against the Islamic terrormasters. And he is possibly the most reviled President in history.

Anyway, the real question is where we go from here.

Thanks to all the previous posters who have kept this a good discussion and not let the thread dissipate into a back and forth with the mrc's of the world.

JMO51, I disagree with you but respect your opinion. You feel conservative policies failed. Fine. What would you do NOW? Specifically? Talk, like Obama proposed? Do you truly think Iran's rulers are open to an honest dialogue that will not be a one way street in their direction?

Sowell reduces the choice for this election to fear mongering. The fact is that if Iran gets a nuclear weapon it will be in part because we made Iran Stronger by helping to tilt the balance in favor by empowering...

~~~
Dear, JP5 (whoo-boy! Sniff this for 20 minutes..) Please let ME continue your stupid Rant...
Jimmy Cahtah ensured the islamo-nut-jobs would take power from the Shah, an Americam ally.
NOW, we face a nut-job islamic fanatic who lusts after killing non muslims, who has also embarked his country upon the path of developing nuclear weapons.
Dirty Bomb, easy.
U235, more difficult.
Plutonium Bomb, harder, still, because of exotic explosive requirements.
Pu bombs require an almost instantaneous concentration of the material, or a dirty bomb results. The explosives surround the Pu, and compress it to 'critical mass'.
The latter two, require very special processing to obtain the materials.
Iran is fully committed to obtaining the materials.
Oh, if I remember correctly, about 22 pounds is all that is required.
Imagine a sphere ( or, for you lefties, a 'ball' ) about softball size.
Election 08
Some of you people still just don't get it. Even when it is laid out as precisely and logically as Dr. Sowell has done, you still don't get it. This is not the 1930's. Time is of the essence. Obama could do damage in four years that we would never recover from. He's a Marxist and the democrats are a full blown socialist party now. Look at the rank stupidity of Nancey Pelosi. You think Oabama is any smarter. Four years is an eternity today and we can't afford to put a Marxist in the White House. You "stay-at-homers" are the ones who really frighten me. Where is your brain. Stick your idealism where the sun don't shine. Get a clue. We are in a period of history where wrong decisions can be devastating to our country and way of life. Now is not the time to try to change the two-party system, as despicable and corrupt as it is, but be circumspect and wise. The only thing that matters is that we win and the democrat does not get in the White House.
Sowell
Thomas Sowell for President!! I was recently asked (by a liberal of course) if I would vote for a black person. (Since they know I hate Obama's racism.) I said of course, I would. If someone like Sowell or Steele would run.
ROD T...WELL SPOKEN
Democrats chose candidate worse than Hillary and you didn't think it possible!
Rod, my biggest concern...is the stupidity of the general voters of america!! When I see the background of obama when he speaks...like last night..it was all female and mostly anglo..Iam beginning to think..." have they tapped into something that we are afraid to mention......
you know that POLITICAL CORRECTNESS that kills!
Just wondering?
I'm speechless at your rant, you traitor!
what if hes right?????
just think if hes right, and if as expected the dems blow out the reps in november we have already sealed our doom. we are fated to go the way of rome and greece and persia nad germany, and its too late to stop what is already happening. too bad. it was nice while uit lasted. what are we going to do with all thoise coopies of the constitution when wwere one.??/just think we could have prevented asll of this from happening just by not voting for barack. who knew??? well fox news knew and ann coulter but other then that who could have predicted??? down we go, for sure for sure. everybody pray. maybe that will help . on the other hand nmaybe this guy and all those of you who believe what he believes are crazy. how about that for a solution???
kroaks:
"Manwhile by divering resources away from the real fight we have strengthened the terrorists and allowed them to regroup."
Terrorism is down 44% across the globe since we invaded Iraq. Splain that one gooseneck!
Regardless who is elected
President, we have to elect a 2/3 majority of CONSERVATIVES to the House and Senate to prevent either Hussein or McCain from doing anything stupid and/or destructive-to-the-nation.
My hope is that McCain will switch to the Democ-rat party before their convention and take the nomination from Hussein. Then the GOP could select a real conservative for President.
negotiating with terrorists
How do you negotiate with someone who wants to kill you? Please don't kill me, I still haven't lived long enough? Are you going to kill me fast or slow? In the 30's, we had people who knew for a fact that we could deal with Hitler and the japs. Just give them what they're asking for, as the belief went at the time, maybe they'll leave us alone. I'm afraid that the "hippies of the 60's" the peace at any price, or give peace a chance group, has grown up into a group of wimps. I'm afraid that we're in for a long dark night until this generation is completely wiped away by a cataclysmic force. Then we can start again with a newer and stronger generation.
when reading Dr. Sowell's words...
some other words kept going through my mind.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
So far the wisdom eludes me. I understand the things I cannot change but am not sure there are things that I can change.
I will continue to pray for this country and that when we vote in November, we will collectively make the best decision for all concerned.
Bravo!
"Senator John McCain has been criticized in this column many times. But, when all is said and done, Senator McCain has not spent decades aiding and abetting people who hate America.
On the contrary, he has paid a huge price for resisting our enemies, even when they held him prisoner and tortured him. The choice between him and Barack Obama should be a no-brainer."
. . . Absolutely, one hundred percent, enough said! I wholeheartedly believe that most Americans will have an equally sobering thought come November, and that Senator Obama will be defeated in a landslide. It is time for the GOP to take the gloves off and portray Senator Obama as the true danger to us all that he is.
JMO51
spits:
"Yes, it will be difficult to curb the nuclear appetite of Iran. But is the failed Bush Administration policies that placed Iran in this favorable position."
Ummmmmmmm, please remind me, under the "BUSH" administration, how many "BAD" countries half halted their Nuclear programs. Your a lying puke, PUKE!
a Democrat super-majority
I predict that Republicans -- many having lost all core and many having lost all testicularity -- will hand Democrats an even-larger majority in the House this November and a super-majority in the Senate. A President Obama will have a free ride ala FDR. A President McCain would be absolutely powerless, an occupant of the testical lock box.
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid would be conducting foreign policy in a McCain administration. The military would have its funding slashed and no preemptive military action anywhere -- including Iran -- would receive dollar one.
A Simple Choice
The choice is simple: Obama believes in killing unwanted babies; McCain believes in killing our enemies and he has the medals and ribbons to back up that belief.
Ratas y Ratones
Actually building a Pu bomb is no harder than building a U bomb, once you have the materials.
The site below shows what is needed. After you build a reactor (yes, test reactors are welcome) you can commence making Pu.
http://www.ricin.com/nuke/bg/bomb.html
The Russians have been delivering the materials to Iran for a while. In additon, the Iranians have been building their cintrifuge program which is needed for the inrichment process.
Scare Mongering
Dr. Sowell is just using scare tactics to try to sway the vote. It used to be the Communists now it's the terrorists. Why don’t we honestly address some of the Palestinian issues? You can't expect the Muslim populations to be humiliated daily and see their children’s birthright taken away from them only to be replaced with Jewish settlements. They see their children living in poverty and ask the rest of the world when it will enforce the U.N. resolutions that give them the right of return to their homelands.
Is Dr. Sowell saying that he wants to bomb Iran or is it going to be another occupation? Their President is on his way out of power. His main rival has just been elected speaker of their parliament. Their economy is reeling and most of their population is under 30 and wants more friendly relations with the West. Strike a blow to them and that will all go away. They will rally around their President and any future moderation will be lost.
The Big Picture
Before we obsess too much on the possibility of Iran getting a nuke, which is a serious concern indeed, let’s not forget Islam already has nukes in Pakistan where they have been since before the Bush presidency. The nukes in Pakistan, up to now, have been well contained by the military under Musharraf, but that condition could be temporary.
There is now a new government in Pakistan; Musharraf is no longer the president although he still has considerable influence in the military, but for how long? We don’t hear much about the new Pakistani government, except we know they resist finishing-off the Taliban in the mountainous Western Region near the Afghan boarder. Lack of cooperation by Pakistan is the main reason we haven’t been able to get OBS and the others hiding out in that region. Pakistan vehemently objected when we fired a predator missile into that area killing several key Taliban leaders, and they severely limit our ability to send troops into the area to work with their forces.
The next president is going to have to deal with both Iran and Pakistan in order to mitigate the potential nuclear threat that extremists will obtain a device from somewhere, be it Iran, Pakistan or from a former Soviet Union neighbor. Whoever is elected this November is going to have to deal with this risk from all sides, failure is not an option.
Within the last week or so a photo-shop picture of Washington D.C. after having been hit with a nuclear weapon was posted on an Islamist web site; it’s obvious they would like to see this objective realized. Our only option is to see this never happens, otherwise we all need to consider the consequences if we are forced to retaliate with our own nukes.
obama
As a typical leftist this man and his party do not want to face the truth.As Sowell said if Iran gets the bomb,it will be given to the terrorists.If that happens and they use this bomb on us,the left and the leftist msm will say that this Happened while Bush was POTUS.If he bombs Iran this same group will say he shouldn't have done it as they were harmless.These people have no clue as to the real world.
Bend over--here it comes
The democrats are going to win in Novermer because BOTH candidates are democrats. I don't give a dam if they bomb Washington DC with a bomb, or New york, or anywhere. I WILL NOT VOTE FOR McCAIN!!! PERIOD!!! He has mooned us and laughed. He has taunted us and voted with the democrats.
I am voting third party and if any of you live in a likely terrorist target area, you might want to consider moving.
The Bomb?
This is the most tendentious piece of garbage written by Sowell, and he's got quite a track record of swill. He truly thinks that an Iran with a bomb would first permit Al Qaeda, a Sunni fundamentalist sect vehemently opposed to the apostates from Shiite Iran, to use, for free I suppose, the bomb (!!!) to not just terrorize the US (what about Europe?) but to set off several of these Iranian bombs to force us to give in to something brown people like them want us to ...well, give in to.
I'm sure he forgot that it wouldn't matter whether a D or an R was in the White House, but Iran wouldn't survive the first hit let alone 3 or 4.
Sowell and McCain share one thing in common, neither knows the difference between Sunni and Shia, although in Sowell's case I believe he does know but wants you to swallow hard on this line of unreason.
Sowell wrote
"The point when they get that bomb will be the point of no return. Iran's nuclear bomb will be the terrorists' nuclear bomb-- and they can make 9/11 look like child's play."
The no-return point may actually be in the past:
(1) Iran already has the knowledge and technology to make nuclear weapons (obtained from AQ Khan)
(2) The assumption for the above is that Iran developped its own; not difficult at all for it to BUY the nukes (especially as AQ Khan was only-too-willing to sell these)
(3) Pakistan's ISI has long been a potential "alternate" supplier due to its sympathy for (and conventional materiel support of) several terrorist organisations
I don't want to but I must
I have struggled with voting for McCain and can relate to those who also have strongly disagreed with many of his positions.
Reading Dr. Sowell’s fine article has changed my thinking, and I think that now I must, despite the damage he will do.
It’s because time is too short, and much more is at stake than most will admit.
Making a statement with my vote is a luxury that would cost too much for us all.
Our ship of state is sinking, taking on water, as some in the boat who are making leaks and cracks don’t seem to realize they are inside the very boat they are trying to sink.
BHO or HRC would blow big holes in the boat and we will sink quickly.
ANYONE who is trying to bail is out is better, even if he is only using a thimble.
Will I bail with a cup or a bucket…and can I afford to make a statement while we sink?
Best Post so far: Beeny #59….crystal.
JM051: In #45.. If you call W “a very conservative president” it demonstrates how unclear your thinking is……you are peeing in your own boat.
TheNew 3rd party
The real argument that is being promulgated here is that a vote for a 3rd party candidate is a wasted vote or a vote for O’Vomit. The argument is that, once again, conservatives must hold their noses and vote for the Republican as he is the lesser of the evils, even if only by a small amount.
The Republican Party was formed in 1854 AS A THIRD PARTY.
So is it time to once again return the Republican Party to the status it held in 1854, that of a third party?
Is the new slogan for 2008,
1854 and out the door?
Or how about 2, 4, 6, and 8, the Republicans have pushed the liberal slate.
And finally this wonderful theme song for McLame:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiOyvNsDtBo
Dr Sowell-why won't they listen to you?
One thing Dr. Sowell does not even mention is the FACT that Barack Hussein Obama wants to disarm our nuclear capabilities. He promises to cut investments in missle defense systems, slow our development of future combat systems. He will disarm us unilaterally while allowing Iran to nuclearize. He's said all this, it is on tape. This man is dangerous and no amount of messianic messaging will save us if he becomes president. I frankly can barely stand McCain, but he has always understood the necessity if being prepared for war. And if you don't believe we have actually been in a war for the last 30- 40 years with radical Islamofascist...post your email address and I will send you a 13 page document that my uneducated dumbazz, has compiled of just some of the attacks that have occured. God help us all!!!
for a moment there, I felt like I was in a Gym listening to the cheerleading squad! LOL
Many issues to face in the next 4 years
Globally, Irans threat to wipe Israel off the face of the planet is tantamount to our national security.
Determining the makeup of the US Supreme Court as several justices may or most likely will retire.
This mild recession can become a full-blown depression if taxes are raised and cash is pulled out of the economy. Raising taxes will decrease cash flow thus reducing tax revenue and durable good sales will decline and unemployment will rise. This will reverberate globally as many foreign businesses who rely upon selling their imported goods in America will see their sales decline.
Subsequent international job losses will lead to regional skirmashes that may cross borders into neighboring countries.
Under Obama's economic plan, everyone will suffer including those who rely upon government handouts to survive and who will inevitably vote overwhelmingly to put him in office.
Be very scared America. Be very scared.
You said "I'm afraid that the "hippies of the 60's" the peace at any price, or give peace a chance group, has grown up into a group of wimps. I'm afraid that we're in for a long dark night until this generation is completely wiped away by a cataclysmic force. Then we can start again with a newer and stronger generation."
I once was one of the "give peace a chance" hippy of the 60's and in every election since 1972 when I was first eligible to vote for a president I threw my vote to Democrat's straight down the line. I didn't consider their position on any issue logically for a moment. Rather I gobbled up their mantra du jour and regurgitated it to anyone who would listen to me. I was lulled by the words Democrat’s used to describe injustices between the have’s and the have not’s, and to just give peace a chance. Their speeches were just what my itching ears wanted to hear.
But one day I woke up (during Clinton-2). I started reading about what the Democrat's had done with my vote and the votes of millions like me. I started listening to other points of view and examining how I felt about each and every issue in each and every election. And guess what? I eventually changed my way of thinking and ultimately changed how I voted. And I finally grew up.
I suspect a whole lot more old hippies like me have also grown up after we recall the tremendous gas lines in the 70's, the high interest rates on mortgages (I was paying 14.5%), the Iranian hostage situation of the failed Carter admin, the systematic and purposeful teachings of leftist ideologies in our public schools, and the stupendously embarrassing Clinton administrations (1 & 2).
I believe people like me who finally grew up are the hope and the future of this United States. (continued)
Buck
(continued)
If any of today's politicians decides to change their mantras and start making sense to every day Americans like myself, I will vote for them. I will do my very best to make a difference at the local level, then at the state level, then at the federal level by becoming an activist and advocate for the values I hold dear.
Those like me need to step it up and encourage folks to become proactive in electing candidates that represent our values re: abortion, lower taxes, oil independance, smaller government, justices that uphold our constitution, a strong military, and fiscal responsibility and who will stand for America first.
If I hadn't noticed that you were from MN, I would have thought you were from Rev Nuts church in Chicago, you certainly sounded like one of them. Go ahead and rant like the rest of the nuts and blame Bush for everything along with the Republicans, has anyone told you it has been the
Democrats that have been running Congress for how long now? Or did you know that? Do you read?
Thank you, Dr. Sowell
As always, your comments are right on target. I agree with you wholeheartedly and my hope is that millions more Americans will read your well written columns and ponder your comments.
I, for one, will go back and re-read your comments, maybe a few times. Sometimes, in the heat of discussions with others, I look for better ways to articulate my position. Your article has provided me fodder. Thanks!
OBOMA IS A OLD SUIT WITH A BLACK FACE .
When I was a Young Marine I went all over Europe and saw with my own Eyes and Ears why Socialism failed back then and Fails there today. My lady and I went back there three years ago and saw all the hate the Govt there since it is still IN terrible shape . There is no Tap water in much of France , little AC and you still DO NUMBER TWO IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND OR BUILDING . UNEMPLOYMENT IS 11.9 % ... AMERICA IS 4.9 %.The Moslem problem is growing worse and are 10 % of the Population ...... And they hate the French .
Those European countries were "ALLOWED "by America to Disarm after WW 1 AND WW 2 , while AMERICA BECAME THEIR $$$$ too America's GUARDIAN because of the COLD WAR ..
SO they all become Pacifist Nations . SO ALL of EUROPE SPENT THEIR MONEY ON SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS ONLY TO HAVE THEM GROW YEARLY AND BECOME HAVE BURDENSOME .
So those Governments turned to Pacifism and Socialism not Capitalism and a strong Military .
Russia's totally failed Marxism appeared to be their "Role Model " Sadly not Capitalism . THEIR GOLD WAS TO UP DATE MARXISM AS IS OBOMA'S B/S .
Yet in those same 60 plus years America grew in GPD , WEALTH , JOBS , INVENTIONS AND PRODUCTIVITY more than all of Europe . BUT WHY ? Because America paid half in Taxes than did Europe so Individual wealth grew unlike UNLIKE Europe where THERE IS FEW in the middle class yet America is 70 % upper and lower and just plain old middle class. Most in America have Cars but because of the lay out of cities ..... few need them unlike a huge America . TEXAS IS THE SIZE OF FRANCE . A DRIVE TO WORK AND BACK HOME IS TWO HOURS IN AMERICA .
SO now we a have Oboma that promises us CHANGE .
ACTUALLY IT IS A RETURN TO 50 IES AND 60IES EUROPEAN HIGH TAXED SOCIALISM WITH COUNTLESS WELFARE PROGRAMS ......... SADLY .
OBOMA IS A VERY OLD HALF MARXIST /SOCIALIST SUIT WITH A NEW BLACK FACE .
I'll have to check it later! I can't youtube on this particular computer!
Dr. Tom, please...
The terrorists have already forced us to humiliate ourselves.
They've prompted our Chicken Little Maximum Leader to undo the founding documents and principles in ways the terrorists never could have accomplished on their own.
What's puzzling is why folks like Sowell ignore the NIE's more encouraging assessment of Iran's fledgling nuclear capabilities and pan diplomacy as appeasement.
Contrary to the neo-con fear mantra, our intelligence agencies unanimously agree a window of opportunity exists in which to try non-military options.
Bombing Mideast countries just makes them more resolved to hurt us.
And it's always a good question to ask if we're creating more terrorists than we're kiilling with our Johnny One Note approach to foreign difficulties.
The odds against winning a fight against the birth rate of Islamic countries are long indeed.
A little intellectual rigor & integrity
please. It's hard to read through a Sowell post because of the overwhelming urge to point out his flaws as I go along - so will read the rest later.
Sowell starts out talking about Iran's intentions, which should be about the Iranian leadership's intentions, but for examples of their perfidy begins listing what individuals in Iraq have done, such as beheading.
Now, the Iranian leaders may well enjoy a beheading now and then, but listing Iraqi beheading as proof that Iran will start selling nuclear weapons to terrorists is simply intellectually dishonest, i.e., lacks intellectual integrity.
I can't understand why people think Sowell is so smart when this is his habitual style of propaganda.
Again, he may be right about Iran. But if this is a gut feeling he should say it's a gut feeling, i.e., one of those dreaded liberal emotions, and quit presenting unscrupulous arguments.
Here, here!! Great post!
An Obama Presidency
In addition to the frightening prospect of Iran having the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, there are many other critical problems facing the American public…election of BHO will mean higher taxes, higher capital gains, a lot of wasted time, effort and money trying to dupe the public into accepting a national health program that will doom us all to second-rate care, it will mean the worst of all possible appointments to the Supreme Court and Federal Courts, billions squandered on “global warming” which I believe is a hoax, a continuing refusal to become energy independent, a foreign policy that will indicate to the world that we are appeasers wanting only “to acquiesce” and loss of our historical role as leaders of the free world. We will pull out of Iraq leaving a void that will be filled by a terrorist religious government, either the Iraqi government or perhaps Iran, and when and if we have to go back, it will be twice as bad as it is now. It will mean more social programs to aid the minorities, and, don’t forget, BHO comes out of the corrupt Chicago political machine and there will be pay-backs. I cannot imagine having Michelle Obama as the first lady…her vitriol is historic, her vendetta against conservative white America will know no bounds. She will continue to scream and rant to incite crowds who have the perception of disenfranchisement, and there will be no “bringing all America together” during such an administration. Yes, there will be “change” but we may have to suffer 4 years of an administration that knows no bounds…is that what we deserve?
Dumb Liberal says:
"Again, he may be right about Iran."
Now that's the only thing you were right about.
Choice - No Bomb or Obama
While the choice for President is a "no-brainer", unfortunately a brain is not a prerequisite to walk into a voting booth.
Joe says
I have no problem with race or gender. However, Sen Obama is way to far to the Left to suit me. If socialism (communism) is what he means by change, then it's not for me.
Preemptive strike!
A Nuclear War with terrorists will be long and slow. They don't need a lot of bombs for a sustained attack as one comment suggested. As they don't have a nation that we can target, they can slowly set successive attacks willy-nilly across the many states. Our policy should be that the source of the weapon(s) will pay the price.
However, a preemptive strike to prevent the weapons from ever being built needs to be how we deal with the problem. We know that BO will only talk to Iran, he is an all talk no action guy.
McCain's history is that he will act in defense of the nation. I wander if he act preemptively.
Hopefully, Bush will give us clean=up after Jimmy Carter and bomb the entire military complex and government of Iran out of existence before he leaves office.
Choices and principles
Anyone who votes for any candidate for any office should vote on the basis of the values and principles they believe worthwhile upholding.
For me, neither Barack Obama or John McCain are viable choices. Bob Barr will get my vote if Ron Paul cannot pull of some kind of miracle resurgence.
To dismiss third parties or any candidate outside the establishment's selected is a contributing cause for the current mess we now have! Your vote does count! It is not wasted when you vote for the candidate that best matches your principles. Doing so will cause the established powers to re-evaluate their selection process.
Mutthead says:
Not much of anything. The change that is needed is to stop the liberals socializing America. Perhaps while you and obama have been living in the past...neither of you realized that America has changed so much that for many of us except (you, Obama and the other racist)America is totally different than it was 40-50 years ago. Obama himself is a glaring example of that. What we need is to change the liberal/enviromental terrorist from reigning anymore jihad on the American people. Look at all the death, devastation, and destruction heaped upon almost every major city in American run by liberal/socialist democrats and their policies. Look at the price of oil & gas today. Much of it caused by the enviromental jihadist and their cohorts in crime the DNC. The change needed is get these hate America first crowd out of our governments both federally and locally.
To koolhand
koolhand:
You are correct that at least on the surface, it seems illogical for a Shiite Persian government (Iran) to give nukes to a Sunni Arab movement (Al Qaeda) which regards Shiites as at best apostates and at worst almost as much infidels as they regard non-Muslims. In fact, I don't think it would bother Al Qaeda one bit to use an Iran-supplied nuke against America and then let Iran pay all the price for it with the annihilation of that country; to Al Qaeda, I'm sure they would simply feel that it's just that many fewer Shiite apostates in the world. You would hope that Iran's leaders would be very aware of this reality. However, remember the proverb in that part of the world: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Also remember, it has hardly been unknown throughout history for parties with mutually exclusive, even antagonistic, interests to join forces against a common enemy or in pursuit of a common objective: look at our alliance with Stalin's government in WW2. Iran's leaders may well have decided that they'll have to deal with Al Qaeda some day, but for now, they can use it to help weaken their bigger perceived threat - the United States - and then worry about Al Qaeda at some future date.
Vic and Lestat:
Regrettably, I agree with you, that the U.S. ultimately will NOT be able to stop the present Iranian government from having nukes unless it is removed from power. Look at North Korea: Kim Jong IL was willing to starve his people to get nukes. The simple fact is, if Iran is really hell-bent on getting a nuke, whatever the cost, one way or another, it will do so, and we may be able to at best DELAY it.
Savage99:
You too are correct. Once the first nuke explodes on Israel, Israel will use its entire arsenal and take out as many population centers of the Arab/Islamic world - and if they're smart, all the major oil fields as well - that they have the weaponry to allow.
Ex-wyomingite
You had best hope that there are a lot more conservatives like me who plan on going down to vote 3rd party. Otherwise it is going to be worse than the 2006 elections. The Commiecrats will have a lock on congress for the next 50 years if we last that long.
You make the difference between to O"vomit and McLame out to be much greater than it is. Personally I see them as essentially the same thing except that McLame thinks he will be able to do something stronger in the national defense areana.
I live in the real world and know that that is NOT going to happen.
I view O'Vomit as a second Jimmy Carter without the Navy experience and farming experience. In other words, he is probably even more incompetent than Carter was. That will limit the amount of damage.
This is not rocket science
The man cannot think for himself and has proven over and over that without a script he is incompetent, I quote ........"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it." -- Barack Obama
This statement says more than anything else ever passing his forked tongue, this country is considering electing a anti-american as it's president.
Sowell should stick to economics
though he's not much of an economist, either. But this column doesn't get any better as I read the rest of it.
Every bit of this column is conjecture and speculation. I hope town hall is paying him a lot of money for political speculation.
catscratchfever
very well put!
Scary but thought
provoking column. But remember, Pakistan already has a nuclear bomb, and Osama and his allies are in the tribal areas -- which is already pretty scary if you think about it.
What OBAMA really stands for...
No matter what the liberal/socialists say, the fact is that OBAMA stands for this:
Objective:
America
Swore I wouldn't, now I must
I swore this year I would not vote for the lesser of two evils. Now, like the politicians who foreswear their oath of office, I will foreswear my oath and vote for McCain. Unlike the politicians, who gladly foreswear their oath for persoanl power and monetary gain, I do it because I'm left with no choice. If this nation is to survive to the next election, it can not be Obama.
Obama Will Win
Why do I say that. Great Orators have a way of mesmerizing people and convincing them that they are the ones that will lead them to the Promised Land or in this case a Change to a new and better America. Just look at history.
Presidents Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy, FDR; all were superior orators compared to their competitors. On the darker side you can add to the list Hitler and Mussolini who, for those who don't know, were elected. So this time expect Obama to be the next president. As long as Obama can stay to scripted speeches along with the solid backing of the MSM's and George Soros' money, McCain doesn't stand a chance.
As far as Iran and nukes, again just look at history. It wasn't until Hitler launched his blitzkrieg that Europe finally woke up. This time the world will not wake up until a nuke goes off. Apparently 9/11 wasn't enough to wake up the world and America in particular to the threat of Islamic Facsism and state-sponsored terrorism. So its going to take something much bigger to get our attention similar to Hitler's blitzkrig.
A McCain presidency that tries to stop Iran with military action is only going to put us in a worse position with the world who will look at us as an even bigger threat. The consequence to this will be a pre-WWI, WWII mentality. Nations will set up alliances to counteract what they will perceive as an american threat and Americans will then perceive these blocks as a threat to our national security. Nothing good will come out of this.
Unfortunately, someone (hopefully not us) will have to take a nuclear hit before the world as a whole will take action.
Terrifying Truths
Dr. Sowell is correct in this article. Iran and the other terrorists will most certainly use a nuclear bomb against the US! The fundemental difference between us and them is we respect life while the terrorists do not. Once this fact is understood, there is only one clear choice in the presidential race, and that is McCain. I do not like him - I will vote for him in an attempt to save American lives.
Nothing Unusual
While the situation may be more parlous in 2008 than it normally is-----Thank you, Dr. Sowell----the problem is the usual one.
Astute voting is ALWAYS a matter of voting against the more evil of the two lessers.
Evil is always with us and cannot be vanquished by man born of woman. Vote to containe it as it may best be contained.
Likewise there are but two parties. Never have been but two, never will be but two. These are the stupid party and the evil party. You tell them apart by this method: The stupid party calls the evil party "misguided". The evil party calls the stupid party "evil".
Propriety exists of finding the stupid party and sticking with it though Hell itself should bar the way. Do that and both Uncle Sam and the rest of H. Sapiens will endure.
That flyboy squid sure is stupid, ain't he?
O-bomb-US at the gate
What the demmie/dummies, socialist and Mindnumbed media fail to grasp despite their contorted and constant hatred of GW Bush is... He is the only man/leader in our country, our world in 40+ years to stand up to the Islamofascist jihadist(state department proclamation not withstanding.) If people don't accept Dr. Sowell's argument...then riddle me this who do you think the islamofascist jihadist want as the president of the US?
Jack
In Kelo vs. New London (2005), The Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision ruled that local governments can seize commercial and residential properties for private development against the will of the property owners, for it is, according to the court, defined as a "public use" under the 5th Amendment of the Constitution
There is one marxism step for liberals.
For all others: With Obama the choice is tough. To vote for now or the future. McCain will help our country more now than Obama. Obama will ruin our country enough now to turn our politics around. But that is very risky and could turn downward fast. Im still thinking on what I should do.
See, I think on many things they are very similar. But, Obama seems to me almost anti-American. There are so many skeletons in his closet of people that are anti-American, that it is hard to think otherwise.
One thing I found interesting is how hitler was never really elected. He put the country into a position to suspend the german constitution and he then took over power. Now, Im not planning on that happening, but with the way Obama gets funding from terrorist...one has to wonder if it is possible.
Sowell
Very good article. It makes a person think on many fronts. People have a very tough choice ahead of them on whether to vote for evils or not.
The Iranian threat is very real and we cannot have a president that will look loosely on them. With McCain, how much better are we going to get though? The conservatives are tired of our politicians stomping on the Constitution and want to take back our country. If we continue much longer, we may need another "give me freedom or give me death" type revolution. I certainly don't want that, but the point of no return is approaching fast.
We do need a foreign policy much like what Jack said above. If they mess with us they die. Had we gone into Iraq with that attitude, Iraqis would be free now and we would be gone. We don't have anyone willing to do that though, so we are stuck in a tough spot.
The definition of dilemma is...
having to choose between two equally repugnant options. Many conservatives despise McCain's mercantilism and commitment to Big Government, his positions often seem like a return to the Hoover era that followed Calvin Coolidge. Obama, on the other hand, appears to be a fascist, meaning another Big Government socialist much in the tradition of Benito Mussolini, the revered idol of the FDR administration (okay, Joe Stalin was also in their list of favourites but that is even scarier).
So, the American people get Big Government with either candidate. The BIG difference is that one will play Neville Chamberlain to Iran's Hitler wanna-be and the other may involve us in the active defence of freedom.
Knowing the likely outcome from the Neville Chamberlain act, particularly when dealing with a politician whose religious beliefs demand a doomsday scenario for his personal salvation, the probability of a serene outcome is less than the historical chance of a cross-town World Series in Chicago.
The only advantage to an active defence of liberty posture is that we all know that the only way to stop a bully is to take him out before he can cause serious damage - or "convince" him that his actions will cause him more harm then he can ever inflict, thereby robbing him of any post-beating satisfaction.
It is still a dilemma, of sorts, but not as serious a one as living in Chicago with a cross-town World Series.
This election is not a case of the lesser of two evils as much as it is the affirmation of taking control of your future or leaving it to the fickle demands of people who believe that their salvation lies in killing everyone. It looks like a greater good, to me, albeit barely when other dimensions are considered. Less of a dilemma than perhaps we thought.
Are they only Bush's allies? They aren't America's allies? Could you please tell me how something like that could have happened?
yes to patriatism
Bobby,, 52years old, average American, came to Houston when President Reagan said stand up and work, be an entrepenur, and yes we are in great trouble, I do remember the dark days OF Carter , and the way we as a nation have been done BY the radicals in the middle east , I went to war with the Us Navy during the war with Egpyt,and would stand up again if my Nations needs me . WE as a nation better wake up WE dont have time to toy with this no brainer
It's Not About America Anymore
When is the light bulb going to come on recognizing that this election is no longer about the reality of the rest of the World??? It's about the 1st Black President of the United States of America. It's about the fulfillment of a Dream. It's about the glorious culmination of what began as the Original Sin of America, but ended in the absolution of a society that has elected the 1st Black President of the United States of America. Osama bin Laden be damned; Iran be damned; high energy costs be damned; the Economy be damned; substance be damned! This is about the 1st Black President of the United States of America ... and you can bet the Farm that over the next 4 months, the media will NEVER let you forget this.
The end of the world as we know it
"Senator McCain has not spent decades aiding and abetting people who hate America."
Yes he has. He has aided and abetted the Democrat blame-America-first/hate America crowd and played a major role in destroying the Republican Party.
Dr. Sowell - Normally I agree with you, but not this time. McCain has promised to take the teeth out of the battle by granting terrorists civil trials and tying the hands of those who need to get information from our enemies.
I also believe that what he will do between global warming cap and trade and amnesty will destroy us from within. I truly see no difference except that McCain will be able to do more damage due to more cooperation from Congress.
Republicans completely let down this country when they had the opportunity to save it. And McCain led the charge to destruction. He has even threatened TWICE to switch parties. He is bent on revenge. How can I now vote for him?
Quite honestly what I see is that regardless of how we fight to prevent it, the end-times are here and prophesies are going to be fulfilled. I have always believed our country would stand for the right and be spared. I no longer believe that. We have the two most dreadful candidates we've ever been faced with. And we're looking at a Dem landslide in both houses of Congress...
I'm personally getting my food storage together and preparing for the worst. I wish I could believe otherwise, but the signs are everywhere.
Lets Be Clear
Conservatives should stop supporting Moderates,and the fact that Primary rules were changed just to help Giuliani win... we now find the better Moderate won,and just like on the other side Obama out Liberaled Hillary.
For those that forget..George Bush convinced us Conservatives he was one of us and got a squeaker in 2000,911 helped him win a second term,John McCain on the other hand tells us he's not one of us and its clear he hasn't any chance in hell,he will easily lose some southern states just because of that.
The moral of the story is..The majority People in general want to vote for true Conservatives,and will every time.
On election night if McCain wins Jessie & Al will be there to tell us the nation is still raciest,and if Obama wins Bush will get the blame,but the truth is both off these will be out right lies,because if we nominated a true Conservative Obama wouldn't have a prayer!,and as it stands now..he probably will win by default.
FOWG was right-on
I really don't know how many more years we can keep up this race toward political correctness and mediocrity.
I can see 21 year olds voting for Obama. They believe slavery ended in 1966, that Margaret Sanger was cool, that FDR was a god "cuz" he gave everyone free stuff during the depression, and America has caused all the wars in the world since 1492. And they spell the word "economics", "e-e-k-o-n-o-m-i-c-k-s".
Soccer moms? Of course, Opra told them to vote for Obama. They think the word "economics" is a type of minivan.
95% of blacks will kneel before the brutha because they're mindlessly tribal, most hate whites, and most fear life. With Obama, they believe the government will take care of them with more handouts, preferences, set-asides, government jobs, and they know a brutha will never hold them accountable. They spell "economics", "e-n-t-i-t-l-e-m-e-n-t".
The intellectually chic to include those in Hollyweird will vote for Obama because he's their token black who will be the ultimate social engineer. With him, they believe, we'll be in one giant perpetual group hug with all life's difficulties handled by the Supreme Court and the government. As a bonus, they believe, we will also be able to marry outside of our species, and besides, think about of the prestige they'll have at their next coke party when they announce they voted for a black person.
They hire someone else to spell, "economics".
Union people? Obama guarantees them endless privileges, control of industry, and a life on their terms. It has never worked in history, but this time for sure.
They don't know what the word "economics" means.
McCain?
I admire you very much, I respect your opinion very much, but I don’t agree with you this time.
Why?
There is no difference between McCain and Obama, We are doom for disaster even if we elect McCain. Both see the world the same way; they will try to compromise with the enemy.
McCain has been a traitor to conservatism many times before; he will do the same given the circumstances that you explain so eloquent. He will concur the same way Obama will do.
Pt. 2
And then comes the supreme RINO, McCain, who buys into the green insanity, and government as the antidote to all social ills. He'll have an illegal Mexican spell the word (and teach him ) "economics".
Iran should just back off. We're destroying ourselves all by our lonesome and that, just fine.
