Too "Complex"?: Part II

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Let's face it. Supply and demand will never replace "need" and "greed" in political discussions of economic issues.

Talking about the "need" for more affordable housing or more affordable medical care is what will get politicians more votes this election year.

Voters don't want to hear about impersonal things like supply and demand. They want to hear about how their political heroes will stop the villains from "gouging" them or "exploiting" them with high prices.

Moral melodrama is where it's at, politically.

Least of all do voters want to hear about the most fundamental reality of economics-- that what everybody wants has always added up to more than there is.

That is called scarcity-- and if there were no scarcity, there would be no economics. What would be the point, if we could all have everything we want, in whatever amount we want?

There were no economists in the Garden of Eden because everything was available in unlimited abundance.

A politician with good rhetorical skills can create a new Garden of Eden in people's minds, though only in their minds. However, that is sufficient, if that vision or illusion can be kept alive until election day, and its failure to materialize afterwards can be explained away by the obstruction of villains.

One of the many ironies of politics is that those politicians who do the most to reduce supply often express the greatest outrage about high prices.

So long as the voters buy it, the politicians will keep selling it.

Make a list of those politicians who do the most to prevent our drilling for our own oil. Then make a list of those politicians who express the most outrage about the high price of gasoline. Don't be surprised if you see the same names on both lists.

Make a list of those politicians who most loudly lament the lack of "affordable housing." Then make a list of those politicians who have most consistently promoted restrictions on the building of housing, under the banner of "open space" laws, "farmland protection" policies, preventing "urban sprawl," and other politically soothing phrases.

Again, do not be surprised at seeing the same folks on both lists.

Is it really too "complex" to figure out that taking vast amounts of land off the market will make the price of the remaining land far more expensive? Or that houses built on very expensive land will be very expensive housing?

Despite the current decline in housing prices, a recent advertisement in a Palo Alto, California, newspaper listed a vacant lot for sale at $879,000. If you build anything more elaborate than a tent on that property, you are talking about a million-dollar home, be it ever so humble.

Many of the places with very high housing prices have very modest homes on very small amounts of land. The San Francisco Chronicle ran a story about a graduate student seeking a place to live, "visiting one exorbitantly priced hovel after another."

It is not at all uncommon for land to cost more than the housing that is built on it, in those places where politicians have made housing unaffordable with land use restrictions under pretty names-- all the while lamenting the lack of affordable housing.

So long as politicians can get some people's votes by publicly feeling their pain when it comes to housing costs, and other people's votes by restricting the building of housing, they can have a winning coalition at election time, which is their bottom line.

Economists may point out that the different members of this coalition have conflicting interests that could be better resolved through competition in the marketplace. But how many economists have ever put together a winning coalition?

So long as voters prefer heroes and villains to supply and demand, this game will continue to be played. It is not because supply and demand is too "complex" to understand, but because it is not emotionally satisfying.

Another excellent article
The left doesn't want to hear that the true impact of their so called energy bill. They don't allow for more exploration of oil but wonder why the price is sky high. Then, they wonder why the price of food has skyrocketed when they increase the demand for food by turning our food into fuel. I don't think they will ever want to understand supply and demand. Because if people really understood it the politicians would be out of a job.

I Want Cheap Gasoline! Now!
This is the mantra of the Left, but every policy they advocate will result in the exact opposite. In fact, what we are seeing today is the result of their inattention to a serious problem.

Thank goodness the Alaskan Pipeline was built. Remember the opposition to that? What do you think the price of gas would be without it? Double what we are paying? More?

Too true
Two houses across the street from where I live were torn down. One was a tiny house in moderate disrepair; the other could have been condemned as structurally unsound. They were sold to a contractor for 750 K and 600+ K respectively. A 1500 sq ft house next door is on the market for $1 Million.

cont.
Then, they are printing off "dollars" and Checks 24/7 and inflating this paper Federal Reserve Banking Notes destroying the purchasing power of this funny money.

And then have the gall to tell us all, the enemy to watch out for, is in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The primo cherry of it all, is the three shallow incompetents we have to choose from for our President.

And these idiots in DC wonder why we have no faith in the faithless hypocrites.

All Good Stuff..., however,
In this land of government of the people, by the people, and for the people, the people seem to deny any responsibility whatsover,

Too Complex, Part II
So why is Bill O'Reilly so down on the oil companies? He should "get" it. ?

Energy and Housing
The liberal are preventing us from drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf or in the Artic and at the same time bemoan oil's high price. Perhaps the silver lining in the high price - if it continues to escalate to $200 and more per barrel - is for everyone to confront the fact that oil is a matter of national security and well-being. We cannot survive without oil and without food. Without oil, we cannot till our land to produce food. Which is more important, survival or dubious science about global warming?

Funny!
Thank you, Dr. Sowell! As Usual, 5 stars!

"Many of the places with very high housing prices have very modest homes on very small amounts of land. The San Francisco Chronicle ran a story about a graduate student seeking a place to live, "visiting one exorbitantly priced hovel after another." "

Due to my economic status, over the years, I have had to live in hovels. It's not so bad.

I became friends with some of the rats. they were much more rational than leftist commies.
And they taste like chicken.

Suspending logic for Party

Nice article Dr Sowell.

I Want
I want what I want and if you can convince me that you can get someone else to pay for it then you get my vote.

If I pull a gun on my neighbor and take his money that is a crime. If I pull the IRS on my neighbor and take his money that is politics.

The Plastic Fantastic
I think we have beet this topic to death over the past 3 days and regardless of logic the eco-idiots and the communists will never see the light.

That is why we need a Constitutional Amendment to repeal the 24th Amendment and to make it a requirement that you actually pay a substantial amount of income tax in order to be able to vote.

The weak, lame, and lazy along with their enabling party, the Commiecrats(D), have found that system warned about by Alexis DeTocqueville; the ability to vote themselves largess from the public coffers. The Constitution was written in a manner to prevent that but the Commiecrats under the reign of FDR successfully packed the court so that the Constitution was rendered null and void by a new theory…..the plastic fantastic.

In any case, as I said on another thread, it is more likely that they will pass a law making me the ruler of the universe. Note that I am not looking over my shoulder for Flash Gordon.

baby boomers
baby boomers.....only generation to experience all things for the first time. nothing ever happened before they came along. they want it now! self centered. feeds right into the politicians as decribed by Dr Sowell. vjf

The here and now
Our representatives will not open up new drilling for oil because we will not see benefits for a decade. Nor will they loosen restrictions to build new refineries for the same reason. When the rewards begin coming in that rep will either be gone or have to share the credit with the current administration. When they begin drilling they will have to explain why they are "raping" the environment while we don't see any results at the pump.

It's all about what looks good now.

After throwing a few nuggets out like "health care for all", "no more war" and "the world will love us again through dialog" comes the genius of promising "hope" and "change". Get the ball rolling with some empty promises and then those two words will start everyone's imagination running. Kind of like what to do with that lottery money before the numbers have even been drawn. No more promises need be made after that. The milk and honey will already be flowing in the voter's mind suited specifically for them.

Lamenting Failure
My read is that what the author is saying is that the likely rejection of the Republican Party in this next election is about so failure on the part of average Americans who want it both ways. Sure there is some truth to what he is saying, politicians do pander.

Take the tax cut promises of Republicans back in 2000. What they were saying is that you can have all those entitlements that you love, and at the same time we and not that other party will cut your taxes.

Conservative politicians who behaved like deficit hawks when Clinton was in office all of a sudden behaved as if deficits don't matter. Sure you hear a little lip service to cutting spending (services). But not in their own districts.

This is not to suggest that Dems are pure of heart on this issue and that Republicans are the evil ones. I am only suggesting that there is no difference when it comes to the idea that you can get something for nothing. But in true Townhall fashion whenever making a valid point the central principal must apply. Those shall not criticize a conservative. One more point on the gas tax it was both McCain and Clinton who were pandering, but Obama stuck to his principles in not supporting a suspension of the federal gas tax which given supply and demand would not have significantly lowered gas prices as they are a function of supply and demand.

Final point: Tax incentives can work to stimulate new industries.

So why would a Republican controlled congress put in a tax break for people who buy humvees, while allowing a tax breaks for hybrid cars to lapse.

Ron Paul
The only politician in this election cycle to support the free market and speak the truth was Ron Paul. So why did he get so little support from mainline conservatives. Could it be that there is really no differences between Republicans and Democrates on this issue? Both promise something for nothing. Could it be that the only way to get elected is to promise something for nothing?

JM051
You have posted this cr*p before about the tax break for Humvees, how about a link to some proof.

And BTW, I now your allegation about the end of subsidies for hybrid cars is a lie because it was in the 2005 energy bill along with another host of BS subsidies for alternative cr*p. This was why I opposed the 2005 Republican Energy Bill.

The were defeated by the Commiecrats and RINOs and got no new energy.

He who promises to rob Peter
to pay Paul will always get the vote of Paul.

Here in Kanukistan, the word *affordable* means *it should cost what I feel like paying, instead of what it costs.* Generally you hear this word bandied about by Limo Liberals and college students living on massive student loans that they somehow believe they will never have to pay back.

The bizarre thing about this whole mindset is the number of people who tell me that I ought to be glad to pay for their childs college education (through my taxes) as their child is going to grow up to pay for Entitlements for me. That is, they are claiming to sell their children into wage slavery for my benefit in return for my wage slavery on their behalf now.

The idea that we should not HAVE any wage slaves makes their eyes glaze over. Their own lives have no meaning save toiling for the Common Good and hoping that all those in the Common Good gang feel the same way.

You said it.
So, now, let's do something about it, folks.

Park your cars.

Turn off your televisions.

Those are just for starters.

Who is willing?

AudieR10
You keep saying you are posting from Canada but the program is saying AL for Alabama.

What's the deal?

Positive Benefits
There has been one positive benefit to the high price of gas. You are seeing fewer SUVs on the road. People are leaving their SUV's at home and commuting in a compact car.

We cannot drill our way to lower prices because oil is sold on an international market. What we need to do is invest in new technologies and the goverment can help play a role.

To begin with we need to redevelop our passenger rail capacity between major areas now covered by commuter air services. We also need to make rail and plane connections seemless. We also need to provide tax incentives not for drilling but for new green technologies. Perhaps there is a place for atomic energy in that mix but frankly it comes with a host of potential problems. Finally, we need to provide incentives for fuel efficiency. One option would be tolls based on vehicle weight and MPG requirements. You drive a smaller car or smaller SUV you pay less for tolls.

Vic
Maybe it's Alberta?

Peg U
I think O'Reilly sometimes bends over backward to be "independent," not cons or lib.

Thanks Dr Sowell for another non-complex essay on Economics. Sure makes more sense than all this Something for Nothing.

Bad Management of America
Dr. Sowell
is correct in his accessment of the oil problem but I think it goes deeper. America has very bad managers, our president and congress are very bad in their management of the US. We have no long term vision plan for this country, there is no alternate energy plan to keep this from happening again and again, from the start of the Iraq war to now nothing was been done to keep us from being put in a position to be used by OPEC because of oil. It is hard for me to believe that with all the knowledge and technology we cannot come up with an alternate energy source are have we and too many people would lose money if introduced. The media has given us three candidates who do not oppose to illegal immigration how did that happen, the three candidates are the same without vision like the president and congress only greed and that greed is being used against us. People without a vision fail, and thats what America is going though because there in nothing that bring us together, not the flag or religion anything if we do not get a plan together we are doomed as a country.

Jaymay
Alberta = AB or CA-AB

Aint it the truth!
Emotionally satisfying. I like that. Two columns yesterday on TH brought out the drama queens and kings is full force. The villain? Big Oil, of course.

It was funny to hear about how those people could not say enough about how big oil was hoarding their exorbitant profits by not building any new oil refineries.

Or course, they failed to say where they would permit these new refineries to be built. I am quite sure that everyone within 100 miles would protest if an oil company announced they were about to build a new production facility anywhere in the U.S.

Go to any local newspaper blog and read the crying liberals protest every time a new factory is announced anywhere. All the talk is about pollution. Even though the people doing the crying have no technical expertise what-so-ever in the area of environmental science, they have to weigh-in and act like experts. These are the same people who complain about the lack of jobs caused by foreign competition.

And Just Ysterday
the lefty whackos turn down another domestic oil drilling and exploration in the U.S.
How, well, thoughtful of them! Wait till it hits $5.00 a gallon. I will laugh at the whackos as they complain, all while sobbing myself!

JM051
I've noticed up here in the Boston area that the commuter rail has become more and more crowded over the past few weeks. Apart from the minor irritations of not being able to find a seat and so forth, that's definitely a positive development--less traffic, more efficient use of energy and more ticket revenues to support the system. I guess if we're looking for a silver lining in all this, it's opening up more people to the option of public transportation.

Vic
Us Canadian posters have to use US addresses to log in because the zip code required won't take letters.

Regarding the 24th amendment, are you proposing a minimum percentage of total income before one can vote (so that someone earning $20k a year would qualify if they pay $3k in taxes) or a minimum dollar threshold that would be indexed to inflation? I'm a proponent of the percentage idea.

C_Miner
Thanks for the info, with AudieR10 I figured there was a legitiment reason and I was curious.

As for the taxes issue and the 24th amendment, it should be some dollar amount of net taxes. This is to elliminate the crowd who get welfare via the EIC. The actual amount is not as important as the theory, with the amount being large enough to assure that the voter actually had a stake in the system.

That is the major problem with out electorate now. A very large percentage of the voters have no stake. They vote for taxes they will not have to pay and they vote for benefits for themselves that the people paying will not get.

BTW, if you are curious the reason I specified repeal of the 24th amendment is because of the wording at the end which prohibited "poll or other taxes". I have no problem with prohibiting poll taxes that are designed to descriminate based on race, but the "or other" went too far. More liberal work there.

JMO51's question
So, why was there so little support for Ron Paul? I'm guessing it was because his foreign policy came straight from the left's playbook. Is that the consensus here?

Can things be fixed and random thoughts
To fix things (in my humble opinion):

1) Repeal income tax and replace it with a varant of the fair tax. A maximum of 10% with a balanced budget ammendment. That would FORCE gov't to slash to 1/3 the size. There would need to be a provision of a year at a time increase (like for war) that would require a super majority of congress and no more than 8% of the tax could be used for things other than national defence.

2) Every bill that goes to congeress MUST state which of the enumerated powers it falls under. The president must agree with that or he must refuse to sign it.

3) Every bill can only contain legistraltion and/or exp[enditures for ONE area. That means you couldn't put an expenditure for a hippy museum on a trade bill.

4) For every new law passed, there must be al least 2 existing repealed that don't quality as being under any of the enumerated powers.

5) Make the president a 1 term only office with a 6 year term. Term limits on congressinal members.

As for number 1 above, cut the dept of education, agriculture and most others... as they should be STATE or local functions (there is this thing called the 10th ammendment).

RANDOM THOUGHTS...

I like Ron Paul's domestic ideas, however, his 'head in the sand' appraoch to the dangers from the rest of the world scared me. Perhaps if we had a domestic president (him) and a foreign president (Fred) I could be a supporter.

Or maybe we should just try and draft Newt??

O'Reilly
Peg U, O'Reilly does get it. He knows quite well that discussing heroes and villains gets him higher ratings than discussing supply and demand. He is selling his product to the same market as the politicians. http://www.poorgrandchildren.com

Thomas
This is another sad article.Sad because you are still "Simmering", over what the San Francisco city council did almost 5 years ago. Please, get over it or run for office. You paid the million dollars for your home,so let it go.I am still waiting for that Harvard education to show up.Don't make Dr. Galbraith look too bad.I am watching you.You could have taught the readers of your column,so much.Another missed opportunity.WHY???

Deep thought 42
Forget Newt. He has obviouosly kissed any chance of elected office goodbye. Else he would not have appeared with Pelosi supporting AGW.

Thanks Dr. Sowell
for explaining economic concepts and behavior in easy-to-understand terms and logical steps. The mystery is why most people consistently allow their orientation/ideology to overrule their rational observations. Humans must have a basic need to feel morally outraged.

Less will lead to more
To # 16 JMO51 in NY: Your ideas and a few others that join in to solve the problem with more levels of taxation. Brilliant. Yale, Princeton or Harvard you? The Keynesians still breath air yet they should have all been dead by now.....No they still live and are causing Governmental Group Think to solve a problem they cannot solve. High gas prices will bring better understanding. A dose of low prices right now would cure no problems. Let the prices soar and then the fools and their ideas will soon be exposed. I suspect that most of the fools this time around are left of center and the right will take charge, but even this is not the solution.

Take away enviro's power
Remove their tax free status and make them accountable for every dollar they take in. The 990 2 page tax form is a joke, and individual making 25,000/yr has a more elaborate form. Environmental groups take in tens of millions each every year and account for it on a 2 page report.
Non-profit environmental groups are taking control of our country with those tens of millions by filing lawsuits constantly. They are the ones who refuse to allow refineries to be built, coal fired electric plants to be built, drilling for oil to disturb the wicky wacky that they have decided is in peril. They are the ones protesting and halting wind farms because a bird might die. They are the ones that make the rules by filing lawsuits by the hundreds, they are the ones that take no responsibility for the damage they are doing.
Earthjustice took in over 40 million, and right now has 151 lawsuits in progress against the American taxpayer. And that is just one environmental group. They have selected judges that they can pretty well depend on to rule for them, and then they request that the taxpayer take it in the neck again when they request all of their "expenses" for litigation be awarded to them.

Humvee Tax Break
The so-called Humvee tax break is a provision in the Internal Revenue Code which specifies that a vehicle over 6000 lbs. is a "truck" for tax purposes, and therefore is subject to more favorable depreciation rules. Yes, the Congress really is that stupid.

The Economic' VS Socialism
Capitalism >Economic' Vs Socialism is a long running War .
Capitalism >Economics' Vs Socialism Meaning Hard Cold Facts Vs Feeling . Emotions , Big Governments controls , our weaker selves and ways .
Capitalism rewards "" Individualism , Personal responsibility , Family , hard work and strong moral Character , Education , Goals and Job skills .
Socialism rewards those that don't live by or practice Personal Responsibility , Bad habits and most of all bad moral behavior or who get little education and no Job skills . A sure Vote getter by the last mentioned meaning Socialist Liberals .
Tree huggers love wild Wolf's but there is a strict way all Wolf's must live in that Pack too survive . I recently saw a Young Male Wolf go after a lead pack... in heat Female as he was killed by the other Males .
Occasionally they are banished but if they don't quickly fine another pack that will have them they will die quite often . Yet the old Pack Wolves that had help feed the pack for years lived out their lives within the PACK .
Even Wolves have rules to "Live " Bye . Socialist /Liberals don't as long as you Vote for them .

What Dr.Sowell said was nothing and only an "Idiot", would be satisfied with such non-sense.A "PHD" from Harvard, does not allow you to skim subjects. If you would like to take up for your teacher, then please do.Explain the economic future of America in 30 words or less.I can and I would like Dr.Sowell to do the same.Your turn and I hate waiting!!!Um is not an answer...

Another Excellent Article
Should be required reading for everyone for every registered voter.

WGA Strike
I wonder how many people complaining about oil companies' greed SUPPORTED the WGA strike earlier this year.

Why was it okay for the WGA to shut down an entire industry just to make more money?

Hmm,
A politician suggesting and running on good moral advice like, 'be content with what you have,'

would sound like John the Baptist in the wilderness eating wild honey and locust and would get his head handed to him on a ... well, you know the rest of the story.

Thanks Dr. Sowell for reminding us what we're all about.

Killer
You can explain the economic future of America in 30 words. Why did you pick 30? Why not 25 or 50? You have aroused my curiosity.

New Format
It made a lot more sense to put the "full article and comments" at the top of the page instead of after one has already read half the article. Better yet why don't you have your web lacky just default to "full article and comments."

If only
I had that last line this weekend. I went back and forth with my dad and brother, but it wasn't until I read Dr. Sowell's last two columns that I realized they didn't want to know why the price keeps going up. They just want someone to blame and get even with.
Gas is a funny thing in that respect. People don't mind spending money on leather seats, DVD players, alloy rims, etc for their vehicles, but buying gas isn't an emotionally satisfying purchase . It just keeps the car going.

JMO51
When Reagan drastically lowered taxes, income to the Feds doubled. When Bush II lowered taxes, income to the Feds increased.

Unfortunately, under Reagan, the Dems drastically increased spending; under Bush II, the Republicans, then the Dems, drastically increased spending.

Obama has publicly acknowledged that even though lowering the capital gains tax did increase the Fed's income, he would raise that tax. Why? Fairness.

Go Obama. There's CHANGE we can count on. With "fairness" at all costs.

(Note he never promises change for the better. I think we can see why.)

Too "Complex"?: Part II
Thomas Sowell hits the nail squarely on the head every time!

With a pile driver!

Having a party
Let's all dress up like Indians and throw all the politicians into Boston Harbor (or the cesspool of your choice). Now that's real change. Maybe we could start over:
1. You can't vote if you don't pay taxes.
2. Proof of citizenship required to register to vote (only one state currently requires it).
3. Citizenship requires proficiency in English: do away with ballots other than English.
4. Make it a crime rather than a civil offense to illegally enter the country.
5. Modify the constitution to limit politicians to ONE term (no matter how long it is).
6. Establish minimum prison terms for politicians who commit crimes in office.

I love love love this article
I wish more folks could read and/or were encouraged to. This works for both sides of the aisle because its true and because it's something we know down deep that there always OTHER reasons politicians do what they do.We have to know the facts and the views that our elected officials have. Thank you for writing it.

WHAT DO DEMOCRATS WANT?

.....They want SOCIALISM ...and what better way to accomplish that ...than by sabotaging FREE ENTERPRISE & CAPITALISM ...

.....If the DEMOCRATS can convince enough voters that free markets do not work ...by voting against all development of Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Power ...so that the economy is on the verge of collapse ...then they can "SAVE THE DAY" with SOCIALIST" programs ...

.....POLONIUS: "Though this be maddness, yet there is method in't" .....COLOSSUS

Demand and Supply
It seems that there is a greater demand for soothing words than for tough facts. The "folks" want to hear what the politicians are feeding them and don't find reality nearly as palatable.

Window dressing economics
are replacing common sense as the democrats try to make it seem as if they are meeting the problem of high gas prices. For political motivation they propose stopping the filling of the strategic supply to lower demand and thus the price. But the long range goal of protecting the country in case our supply is in danger takes a back seat.

The real issue of increasing our domestic supply through Anwar and off-shore drilling and Nuclear Power is dodged for these stupid moves like the strategic supply and waving the gas tax for the summer. Democrats continue to serve the interests of radical environmentalists.

Katie
That is true.

Too many spoiled brats.

Imagine what would happen if parents treated their minor children the same way politicians treat voters.

it would be nice, Doctor S.
If just once we could have a discussion about supply and demand without the open space laws around the bay area coming up. Maybe they are excessive; I don't know. My brother lives in the area and wasn't even aware of them. Although he is a fairly large investor in real estate (commercial) he has a list of other culprits. Like I say, maybe they are excessive. Anybody looking at a map of Manhatten would say that the amount of land put aside for Central Park is ridiculous. I am sure it affects real estate prices; without Central park Manhatten would be unbearable. What about buying up the rights to sell some of the agricultural land outside the city for any other use? Bad idea? Once again, I beg to differ. New York City is much better with these laws. People don't have some basic right to live near the SF Bay or on the Peninsula. Why DON'T the people who live there have the right to pass laws again? Does every place on earth have to become a stinking pit with everyone sh*tting in everybody elses lap?

killer
"What Dr.Sowell said was nothing and only an 'Idiot', would be satisfied with such non-sense."

What killer said was nothing and only an "idiot" would be satisfied with such nonsense.

If you have a specific criticism to make, killer, then make it. Otherwise, your post consists of nothing but unsupported assertions.

By the way, have you ever heard of the space bar? It's at the bottom center of your keyboard, and you use it right after you type a period at the end of a sentence.

Open Space
Open space laws do deter the construction of new housing on the San Francisco peninsula.

It should be noted that most of the peninsula consists of very hilly terrain which is already very expensive to build anything on. Developers prefer to build on flat land.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND IS IN FULL SWING
Supply and demand one reason the housing market skyrocketed. Supply and demand is the reason gas prices have gone through the roof. Whats not to understand about supply and demand.

We have a rapidly growing population that demands more living space. One reports notes the US population will reach 1 billion before leveling off. Do you want cheap housing or do you want to eat. There is a food shortage in the world and several countries are experiencing food riots. One report says we only have three months world supply of wheat in storage.

To grow crops you need land. You can't grow wheat in a housing division. We thought there was such abundance we could grow all the corn we wanted plus convert some of it into Ethanol. Didn't work did it? We learned have a shortage of farmable land and cannot devote food crops to fuel.

Population control is one answer. We cannot allow our human population to continue to explode. If you think Immigration is bad not wait til the world population grows from 6 billion (current size) to 9 billion project for 2050.

Demand and Supply
It seems that there is a greater demand for soothing words than for tough facts. The "folks" want to hear what the politicians are feeding them and don't find reality nearly as palatable.

Government's effect on housing prices
Governments also inflate housing costs with the gimmick of "assessed values". What legitimate interest does any level of government have in even knowing -- much less determining -- the value of any piece of private real estate? Yet, we routinely accept government's decree -- even taking it as flattery -- that the "value" of our homes went up another 11%, not equating the charade with the tax grab that it is, and then we're indignant when we can't sell it for what the government just told us it's worth.

Ratas y Ratones or Sowell where are you?

Humor will get you every where Indiana, 4:30 AM. Taste like chicken, huh.??.

As usual, Thomas Sowell IS spot on. Why couldn't he be our first African origin candidate for president.??.

Well, no one worth shooting is this time around. What a collection of misfits and useless persons we have as presidential candidates for 2008.

Makes a citizen want to forget he is part and parcel of this country. More than 350 years of history down the drain for this one. Can there be any hope for the future with this as an example of our collective proclivity. Maybe it is time for a knock down drag out war to render the sheep from the wolves. JMO51 et al re communter/other rail
It ain't gonna happen. To build new railways, you need rights-of-way. If you think green space laws affect property values, wait until the government or the rail industry want to claim the necessary land to build railroads. Unfortunately, the U.S. rail system was killed by big business at the beginning of the 20th century and there is no way to put that genie back into the bottle.

Sowell for President
It's really a shame that the presidency is pretty much all about political posturing. Pander to this group and that group; promise this and that. It seems there's no room for a true conservative like Sowell and his unrelenting wisdom.

Buses
What is stopping most people from buying a fleet of buses and providing bus service for profit?

Surrounded by Idiocy
As a high school student I constantly hear the same liberal rhetoric from my teachers about the terrors of the housing market and the other countless "shambles" of the economy. But when it comes down to it, Sowell is exactly right. These are the same people questioning tax reductions on oil etc. I am sick and tired of the same liberal bologna being imposed on me from all directions. I am simply surrounded by idiocy. I have been forced to resort to the level of doing my own research to find the real truths of the world of politics instead of being fed the same biased agendas of the left. How about some checks and balances for the education system?

JMO51 et al re communter/other rail
The railroads were killed by the government subsidies to the Interstate highway system after WWII. The trucking industry grew up then as a result of those subsidies, and now we have the Traffic density that results in road rage, wrecks, and diesel consumption.

Long haul trucking is a symptom -- spur rails should have been replaced by short haul distribution by trucks, and long haul rail should have been made bidirectional. But because of subsidies to the trucking industry, rail shipping is high priced sloowwww compared to what it could be.

Supply and Demand .
Socialist /Liberals only understand ''DEMAND "much like a small child wanting more Cookies before diner that will not only ruin his diner but his will to eat good healthy food is gone !
Libearls demand cookies much the same way with their hollowering. WE want more Oil but refuse to ALLOW us to Drill for our own Trilllions of Barells under out feet .New Nuke plants , Natural Gas or more Coal
(far cleaner liq. )power . That insanity is not even reasonable Math to a First Grader much less a serious politican that cares about middle class America they say they are helping and saving daily ?
Supply siders understand ''Need " .In perfect Harmony NEED AND DEMAND work wonderfully together .
The Problem is Demanders (Socialist) hate Suppliers and undercut and regulate them everyway $$ possible .
There is a old quote from a Zin Warrior of 1200 AD . who remindes me of present day Socialist and Liberals .
A man with no Bravery no Horor no Sword no Bow NO Arrows wins no wars or food for his Table and is sure to Die and the HANDS of those that bare their Sword when threatened with harm to him , his family or country .
America under Socialsim gives up it's hard fought weapons of horor, Sword , Bow and no Food on his table ....... or my ad .... no Gas in his tank or no heat in his home UNLESS IT COMES FROM OUR ENEMIES .
America is had many generational chances so This must be the spoiled age of Economic stupidity and those pacifist protecting this great Nation .
Oboma is their Chosen Master . Not This Warriors .

High School curriculum
here in Texas, we just decided that we should add a fourth year of math and science to the curriculum, and many are saying they don't use what they already are taught, so why more.
I get almost universal agreement that the two semesters should be used to teach personal finance and economics.
The problem would be to find people who could teach those subjects.

Supply and Demand . part 2
When Liberals Gouge Business's with Taxes this IS what happens I was a part of in several markets and well know personally .
The Horse Racing Industry could use a short line of
excel-rated depreciation tax on Race horse's as did lots of equipement even American made tractors .
Liberals in Congress stopped its use and Hundreds of Millions of tax dollars dried up as did Thousands of Jobs and race farms .
Liberals put a 10 % Royality taxes on Yachts . America was the largest Yacht builder in the world .Past tense .
So those Yacht Co.s that didn't go broke moved to the near bye Islands and are still there today .. Yes those huge taxes died for America as did Thousands of Jobs and CO.s that supplied their needs .
Liberals did away with excel-rated tax depreciation on Apartment houses so Builders stopped building Middle Class apartments and the prices for Apartments doubled within 5 years . Then so did houses .Duh ! Supply and Demand .
The Government use to buy ICE TRAYS directly from the manufactures at 69 cent a tray . Not anymore . Liberal Politicians got involved so we got several middle men and Minority business's suppliers sold in small amounts with SBA $$$ to the Feds .
Yes you guessed it . A ICE TRAY WENT frm 69 cent TO $23.17 .
I could go on and on since Oil and Food prices are no different when you do the math . Now Liberals want to charge Oil more with a 20 % Gouge tax that will be passed on to Oil users ....... Liberals never learn or grow up sadly .They still want their cookies before diner .

buses
dbz77 Bus service for profit? That would the require efficiency and business accumen not found in ANYTHING run by government.
Ratas y Ratones, HaHa. I thought there was more of a pork-like flavor.

JM051 Drilling for our own oil WOULD lower prices. More supply would see to that. Please study some economics. Dr Sowell's book would be a good start.

Also, the government should NEVER confiscate money from anyone to subsidize another business.
If alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power were so good at replacing coal and nuclear power, they would have already supplanted them.
People who drive SUVs already pay a toll for THEIR CHOICE of vehicle. Buying more gasoline for the operation of the vehicle sees to that.

Go ahead, volunteer to have the government get more control over your life.
I don't need it.

Qui bono?
Liberals favor land-use policies and rent-control schemes that reduce the amount of available housing and increase homelessness. They also increase the problem of hunger, since many people now spend more than 50% of their income on housing, leaving precious little for food and clothing.

These same politicians then use the misery created by these policies to get elected so that they can create NEW government regulatory schemes to "fix" the problems created by the last batch of regulatory schemes.

If we had abundant cheap housing, food, fuel and healthcare, does anyone believe we would ever elect another liberal? What incentive do liberals have to really fix the problems that get them elected? When it comes to poverty, qui bono?

C_Miner
C_Miner: Regarding the 24th amendment, are you proposing a minimum percentage of total income before one can vote (so that someone earning $20k a year would qualify if they pay $3k in taxes) or a minimum dollar threshold that would be indexed to inflation? I'm a proponent of the percentage idea.

How about simply that anyone who works for any government entity can't vote for any candidate for office in that entity as it is a conflict of interest? A Federal employee could vote in state and local elections, for example. Right now, a Judge can't participate in a ruling for or against a company in a case where he has a significant economic interest.

Demand before supple

The same people who want open borders, don’t want any more homes to be built.

But let’s remember the fault is with developers. Those crazy greedy guys build a million houses a year, just to make a ton of money.

Whoops, maybe it the other way around. Since no developer ever made a penny building a house, he must be assured of a customer who will buy the house, so that a profit can be made. Not when it is built, but when it is sold.

When I was born the population of the US was 128,000,000, but just think, then came the developers and the road builders and now look at what we’ve got.

Or well, maybe the need really did come before the supply.

Same with the money you borrow to buy a house or a car. Each and every penny borrowed by you, is loaned by someone else. And while you holler and complain if the income taxes go up, you cheer if interest rates go down, thereby, in either case, the spending money of millions of us goes down.

It ain’t no zero sum game, really. Interest rates go down for you, income goes down for me — well maybe it is the same amount up as down, as far as the total market is concerned.

Just remember it’s not the same people who create the demand, and those who create the supply, of whatever it is.

Economic literacy test?
What if congressmen had to demonstrate a grasp of Economics 1.01 before having their votes counted?

Dr. Sowell and Walter Williams could design a course in basic economics for entering congressmen, who would have to score at least a "B" before their votes were counted. Until these lawmakers passed the economic literacy test, they would be allowed to vote, but their votes would not be counted, and they could not sit on any committee. Also, renewal every two years should be mandatory.

Many professions require some minimal demonstration of competency before being allowed to practice. The people in Washington should not be exempted from this common sense solution -- especially considering that much of what they do impacts our economic well-being. Even my pizza delivery guy had to show he could read addresses.

While we're at it, a test on the Constitution would be nice, too.

Hmmm. I would have thought, maybe, "stop levying restrictions and mandates that make things more expensive," and "vote for different political candidates."

It's not clear to me what the connection is between parking the car, turning off the TV, and changing the way politics intervenes in the economy. Probably just me.

I’m not willing to do any of those things, but I am willing to dig up all vineyards, and plant something useful. I am willing to close all breweries, wineries, and other alcohol producing places, I am willing to stop the millions of vehicles used to deliver alcohol, and close the millions of bars where alcohol can be bought, and close the alcohol sections in all stores.

Have you never seen the photo of the polar bear laying on its back looking like just the most adorable thing you have ever laid eyes on?

Of course, they must be protected even though they don't need protection. At any cost. Dang, I sure would miss those cute things if they ever did run into a problem due to our plundering of the planet. I will sleep better tonight finally.

I visited breitbart and read the announcement and it appears that polar bears are being listed as “Threatened,” not “Endangered.” As I recall, the curative provisions for a Threatened species are somewhat less onerous than for an Endangered species. I was unable to find the difference in my admittedly brief search.

I did find that the Canadian equivalent of our EPA has also been urged to list polar bears as endangered, though I didn‘t find their decision. Naturally, one of the threats to polar bears is “oil and gas exploration.” Obviously the envirowackos are anxious to find one more way to stop development of ANWR. Congrats, enviros. Thumbs down to you, Interior Department.

excerpt:
" Kempthorne proposed 15 months ago to investigate whether the polar bear should be declared threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

That triggered a year of studies into the threats facing the bear and its survival prospects at a time when scientists predict a continuing warming and loss of Arctic sea ice. The Arctic sea ice serves as a primary habitat for the bear and is critical to its survival, scientists say.

"The science is absolutely clear that polar bear needs protection under the Endangered Species Act," said Andrew Wetzler, director of the endangered species program at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

A decision had been expected by early January, but the Interior Department said it needed more time to work out many of the details, prompting criticism from members of Congress and environmentalists. Environmentalists filed a lawsuit aimed at forcing a decision and a federal court on April 29 set a May 15 deadline for a decision."

See, a really smart guy in charge of getting species added to the list says it should be so and a federal judge agreed. Good enough for me. I am just glad we did not wait until another bear perished from global warming. The best defense is a good offense. If Andrew Wetzler is successful, no animal will have to perish from man made global warming ever again when we are all gone. They can go back to being part of the food chain and being killed by mother nature instead of all us heartless parasites. Everyone know bears cannot live on the ground. There is no possible way new food sources would emerge from a warming of the tundra. Their ecological state must be analyzed as the closed and well understood system that it is.

Suffer yankee imperialists!
Or at least wince when you see your gas card bill. Dr. Tom makes good points and this choir member mumbles right along. Seems like as a nation we are destined to go on a diet, like it or not. When our good friends the Saudis et al through the collusion of our own government, squeeze our cherries, everything goes up. Food, the electric bill, fuel oil, plastics and on and on. I guess the terrorists need the money.
At least the polar bears won't have to endure the ugly sight of oil drilling stuff. They are soon for the endangered list...and all that entails.
We can't depend on our political masters as they have always been terribly self-centered hypocrites and in the main, vicious enemies of anyone non-subservient...or rich.
Any one of the three liberals running for prez will make things much worse. Forced environmental mandates, giving-up the Mideast to Iran, opening the borders, mandatory evening lectures from Dr. Wright...
I have a spot all picked out in Tucson where I will sell gum and candy and cheap watches made in America. I'm also thinking of buying a SUV for tourists to pose with for pictures. Hire a person, not a programmer

Don't know where the "dup" came from, but don't you wish TH would hire a reasonable person to supervise their computer programmers.

I know how stupid and uncaring computer programmers can be, because nearly 60 years ago, I trained some of the very first.

Just think of the bandwidth and the computer power wasted by requiring us to click two or three times to get the whole story and comments.

Just notice how the reply # changes all the time, so there is no way to refer to a reply number.

Just remember, guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people.

Computers don't miscount votes, steal identity, and produce stupid so called games, people who program computers do all those things.

Why does the horn blow when some people unlock their car door? Is there a good reason? No, some programmer just was having his version of fun.

When I was training NASA programmers to put the men on the moon, computer engineers and programmers wanted to do this or that, not because it was needed or required, but because it was their version of fun.

Come on TH, hire a real person to supervise programmers. When you promote your best programmer to be the supervisor, you not only lost a good programmers, you most likely gained a lousy boss.

When people learn how many years ago I got involved with computers, they say, "those were room size computers." I say, "No, one of the first computers I worked with weighted 250 tons, had 50,000 radio tubes, and filled a four story building. And your little laptop is most likely no more than 2 or 3 millions times as fast as those computers.”

Hey, since everyone got to the moon and back, I did better at my job than the TH programmers do at theirs.

Polly
The Canadians added it to their second tier list as well. The entire fraud was a backdoor attempt at getting AGW and CO2 legislation forced via court action. This one wasn't to stop ANWR drilling which had already been stopped.

Now, depending on the severity of the 2nd tier limitations every decision made by anyone who does anything involving the release of the so-called greenhouse gasses will have to go through an environmental impact study on Polar Bears and AGW.

This is even though AGW has never been roven and most of the evidence refutes it.

It is evident that the Republican Party has become the Democrap Party and sold out. There is just one thing after another with this administration.

I surmise from your invective that you majored in “Vitriolic Abuse of the Ivy League” at whatever junior college you flunked out of. Repetitively disparaging Dr. Sowell’s educational background is such a clever argument that even Socrates would be rendered bereft of an intelligent response. Employing irrefutable logic sourced in the brilliant observation that Dr. Sowell is--unlike yourself--incapable of summarizing the economic future of America in thirty words or less is nothing short of astonishing. I for one, am blinded by the brightness of your academic luminosity and must take refuge in the shadows of your towering intellect.

Since the sole piece of evidence you are offering is the widely discredited works of John Kenneth Galbraith, I would suggest that you become acquainted with the library and actually perform some research. See Henry Hazlitt, Fredrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, etc. Furthermore, in comparing yourself to Dr. Sowell, you are so far out of your intellectual depth that a snorkel would be required to reach the keyboard. A friendly bit of advice: ad hominem attacks are a poor substitute for research and evidence. Please do some and then come back to TH with comments that resemble an intelligent remark.

I had approached from this angle about 6 months ago, that a +/- balance had to be done between whether you recieve or give more to the government and you had to pay net taxes before being able to vote. This would mean that unionized beaurocrats could not vote themselves higher wages.

But this method fails one of my major criteria: all members of the military would be disenfranchised, as would police and firefighters. I've since moved to a "minimum percentage of what you earn" approach, so that even a welfare recipient can vote IF they are willing to forgo the chosen % of their income to taxes. I'd favor somewhere in the 10% - 20% range. I'd also favor a comparison so that the greater of the above listed and 0.5% of total accumulated (international) wealth must be paid before you can vote in the US (or Canada). That should disenfranchise the Kennedys. ;-)

Historian
I did not quote Dr.Galbraith or espouse any of his positions. My comment was an inside "JOKE",for those who have attended Harvard.Obviously you don't fit into that group! For those who have an interest in economics;America has a 75 year cycle, when it comes to economics. The first cycle, from 1786 to 1861,was for the development of small businesses. The second cycle, from 1861 to 1936,was for the development of Big business. With the depression of 1930,as a backdrop, government became the economic engine from 1931 to 2005.There is at present a 4th and final phase of economic activity in America. However, that phase is being ignored, due to a lack of knowledge. The growth of the American economy is "Buried" in this phase.Do I know the answer to this query?Yes.Will I tell what it is?NO.Why?If the American people are so smart,as those on TH appear to be,they should know the answer.Good Luck!Damn California is going to the DOGS...

Anybody who put his life on the line would be exempt.

But enough playing - term limits and following the Constitution would do it.

Energy policy?
How about this for an energy policy? Three words. The free market.

All of these people saying that we need a government "energy policy" are warmed-over Soviet-style central planners. It never worked in the past, doesn't work now, and will not work in the future.

Rich
Agreed, but the devil is in the details. Up here doctors, nurses and teachers are all paid by the government. Would EMTs and other ambulance workers apply? How about bureaucrats or dangerous profession but out of harms way (ie deployed in Okinawa) or in a supporting role unlikely to face direct danger (flight crew stationed in the US). There's too many niggling details, so I gave up on it and went to the minimum-contribution-required instead

another thought
I'm against spending limits on free speech around election time. I'm also against organizations hiding who the large contributors are - there should be full disclosure of who pays for ads for or against a candidate. Any thoughts on limiting the "speech" (election spending) of non-citizens and/or non-voting citizens during or near elections?

I'm thinking of puppeteers like George Soros and China. I don't see how to directly apply it though. Gotta think of the downstream effects first...

Polar Bears...
The environmental scientists say that the North Pole was not always ice covered due to what they dredge up in their core samples. This may mean one of two things: 1.) polar bears survived / evolved / existed with little polar ice and can probably learn how to do that again; or 2.) the current North Pole wasn't always at the North Pole.
I suspect there is more agreement with the first premise than the second, though I'm really curious as to how the oil, an artefact of equatorial prehistoric periods got up under Alaska if it has always been there. Plate tectonics is not the answer to that curiosity, by the way.
So, if Polar Bears have lived through less icy conditions, why are we getting excited that they will have to do so again? The news these days is agog every few weeks with the discovery of either new species or ones thought to have become extinct that are found in a new habitat. Nature is clearly not as inflexible as humanity, and nobody is as inflexible as a Democrat.
Ah, is that the answer as to why Polar Bears are now "endangered"? The Dogma must be followed, not the logic?

Dr. Druhl
Yes, it is dogma, not logic. Always has been. As to your question of how oil got up under Alaska, it is one of several problems with the current geologic theory of oil formation. Thomas Gold's theory explains it. I have always been a fan of his but, only recently read an interview with him thanks to Gestell that I found fascinating. I saved the link but, it is on my work machine. Google his name and wired if you want to read it.

The polar bear can certainly survive without an ice covered ocean. The eco nazis really are out of control and caved is the only way to describe the reaction of this administration.

killer
You made an effort to write in almost complete and coherent sentences! I can almost believe you graduated from Harvard especially within the last ten years. It doesn't mean what it used to. Look at Paul Krugman. He is an economist. Really, has the diploma and everything but, one would never suspect it from anything he ever says or writes.

How about some source material for this four phase thing that America was preordained to follow. While government has certainly taken a bigger slice of the economy since FDR, to say it drives it is hard to fathom. It is a leech that might bleed the economy to death but government, by itself could never achieve the heights reached by this economy. It has never happened before. The Soviet Union at its apex produced two different models of automobiles that were extremely poor quality, unreliable, and unprofitable. Government cannot achieve, it can only take, mismanage, and at best provide a minimally acceptable level of service for the dollar, military excepted.

This country may very well collapse from too much socialism but, it will be the choice of the people and not some obscure 75 year life cycle of capitalism or democracy or anything. I am open to the idea of such cycles to explain politics or democracies but, not economics.

The world has never seen unfettered or minimally well regulated capitalism and it probably never will because the people's need for security and emotionalism outweighs rational thought.

Turn out the lights...
I think the Left should set the example: stop using electricity, period. Stop using any kind of fossil fuel, period. Eat only tofu, totally. Live in herbal tents, constantly. They talk a lot, but do nothing to support their blather.

Killer Cycles
Cycle theories are useful for analyzing past chains of cause and effect, but they are nearly useless for predicting the future accurately. The reason is that the future invariably reorganizes the variables, producing different chains of cause and effect.

No one can predict America's economic future. We can, however, predict a less prosperous and secure economic future if America elects Senator Obama as president and gives him a Democrat Congress. These predictions follow from applying sound economic principles to the analysis of present facts, such as why socialism has led to Old Europe's slow economic growth rates, lack of economic dynamism, declining human capital, crushing entitlement obligations, and declining living standards.

In my view, America has become dominated by those who look to Old Europe with envy, i.e. the Boomers and their yellow-livered, feckless offspring. Consequently, America is set to join Old Europe in economic decline. As this sets in, and given continued fast economic growth in East Asia, all those jobs that went abroad will come back to America, such that your grandkids will enjoy safe, unionized, centrally-controlled factory jobs making cheap toys and other throw-away consumer crap for East Asians.

Now that's Utopia!

The Illiterate Electorate
At the risk of being called a cynic...the electorate will fall for this emotional approach rather than take the time to educate themselves and be informed citizens. People vote on name recognition or who "looks" the best or who promises to slay the most dragons for them. These people should not be voting unless they can pass a test to prove that they at least have a basic knowledge of our government and know something of the candidate for whom they are casting a vote.
Dr. Sowell, thank you for yet another excellent article.

The Dumbing Down of Todays Voters
This is a great series of pieces that highlights the unfortunate reality of today's America voter who uses emotions not common sense, and politicians who exploit voter emotions.

The Contradictions of the Left
I recently visited the San Francisco area. It was obvious that the slump in housing prices has yet to hit that liberal enclave. As I strolled through Carmel by the Sea, an extremely beautiful place, I was enchanted by the unique homes evidently built many years ago in this once "artist colony". I also noted that a 1,400 sq foot, 3BR, 2BA home could be had for about $1,200,000; a bit more than my budget permits. I was also interested in seeing the many Obama placards adorning these super expensive dwellings, as well as the hybrids in the drive. I guess the motto of the liberals is "I have mine, my money is in a tax shelter and now I want to see everybody else pay and pay to create that socialist utopia I dream of - as long as it doesn't impact me".

The hypocrisy of the left is a wonder to behold. I guess I'll just sit her in the sticks where $1,200,000 can still buy a 6,000 sq ft, brand new 6BR, 5BA house with a pool in a gated community on a private Golf Course. Oh, but the liberals wouldn't like that ostentatious show of wealth; we better tax that guy at 90% on the margin like back in the 70's (so says Obama)!

Thomas Sowell For President!
Mr. Sowell, you are so wise. I wish you could be president. I also wish I could explain thigns the way you do- then I might run. Somebody has to change something in this country.

Federal pump tax: 18.4 cents per gallon
PA state pump tax: 32 cents per gallon
All federal, state, county, municipal, and school TAXES of all other kinds = 1/3 of the price.
Speculators’ add-0ns: Most of the rest of the price
Foreign nations’ prices: Much of the rest of the price
Oil-tanker ship charges and oil-spill insurance
The cost of the alcohol used to dilute the gasoline
The oil companies’ cost to process oil into gasoline = less than 25 cents per gallon.
The oil companies’ profit: 10 CENTS PER GALLON (2.9%). The oil companies get the large majority of their profit from outside the country, not from the American People.

Barack is accusing the oil companies of price-gouging. BARACK REPRESENTS ALL TAXATION, WHICH IS A FULL THREE-SEVENTHS (43%) – SOON 55% - OF THE TOTAL PRICE.

The price could be greatly reduced by hiring the oil companies to drill, pump, refine, and deliver OUR offshore oil to us. There would be no speculators’ add-ons, no foreign nations’ price, no oil-tanker charges and oil spills. No dilution-with-alcohol cost would give us a full gallon of gasoline.
Repealing all the hundreds or thousands of taxes, and replacing them with ONE TAX AND DONE for each level of government, would alone reduce the price of gas by three-sevenths (43%).

Had government not taken
half the operating capitol of all our businesses and industries every year since WWII, we would have the best railroad system, high-mileage pollution-free cars, pollution-free factories, and all these other things, in the world. Everything would have been developed and built in a minimal amount of time for a reasonable price. This was all prevented by the same government that now wants to demand it under government control.
Eliminating all taxes and replacing them with one tax for each level of government - ONE TAX AND DONE - would remove all those taxes from the price paid for everything by everyone, including government, and reduce the price by 1/3. The price of gasoline would be reduced by 43%.
Does anybody out there believe that Husstlein Obama will reduce the cost of gasoline by increasing taxes on it?

Government employees DO NOT PAY TAXES. What they claim to pay is actually a reduction in the amount of money they take out of the treasury. They add nothing to the treasury. They have a totally negative effect on the treasury.

oil companies
When the oil companies were interviewed by the senate a week ago, a woman senator asked do you have answers other than 'supply and demand'.

The oil executive said I understand and go by the economic fundaments.

She asked two more times -- too complex.

Such a simple direct formula and many want to have timely feel good solutions and the blame those who are not a part of their group.
