Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Sometimes unrelated events nevertheless tell a coherent story.

One newspaper story that caught my eye recently was about two high-powered schools in South Korea where Korean girls study 15 hours a day, preparing themselves for tests to get into elite colleges in the United States. Harvard, Yale and Princeton already have 34 students from those schools.

When a copy of the 50th anniversary report on members of the Harvard class of 1958 arrived in the mail recently, I thought back to one of my fellow students in that class who had worn a hole in the sole of his shoe but put a folded piece of newspaper in his shoe to cover the hole, rather than tell his parents.

He realized that they would buy him a new pair of shoes if they knew-- and he also realized that they could not afford it.

He went on to become a professor at several well-known medical schools and to have various achievements and honors over the years.

From even further back in time, I received a letter recently from a man who grew up in my old neighborhood back in Harlem. When he and I were in the same junior high school, one day a teacher who saw him eating his brown bag lunch suddenly arranged for him to get a lunch from the school cafeteria without having to pay for it.

It happened so fast that my schoolmate had already taken a bite from the school lunch when he suddenly realized that he had been given charity-- and he wouldn't swallow the food. Instead he went to the toilet and spat it out.

By now his brown bag lunch had been thrown out, so he just went hungry that day. He went on to become a very successful psychiatrist.

Like everyone else, I have also been hearing a lot lately about Jeremiah Wright, former pastor of the church that Barack Obama has belonged to for 20 years.

Both men, in their different ways, have for decades been promoting the far left vision of victimization and grievances-- Wright from his pulpit and Obama in roles ranging from community organizer to the United States Senate, where he has had the farthest left voting record.

Later, when the ultimate political prize-- the White House-- loomed on the horizon, Obama did a complete makeover, now portraying himself as a healer of divisions.

The difference between Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright is that they are addressing different audiences, using different styles adapted to those audiences.

It is a difference between upscale demagoguery and ghetto demagoguery, playing the audience for suckers in both cases.

People on the far left like to flatter themselves that they are for the poor and the downtrodden. But what is most likely to lift people out of poverty-- telling them that the world has done them wrong or promoting the work ethic of the Korean girls, the dogged determination of my Harvard classmate with the newspaper in his shoe, or the self-reliance of my fellow junior high school student in Harlem who had too much pride to take charity?

When young people go out into the world, what will they have to offer that can gain them the rewards they seek from others and the achievements they need for themselves?

Will they have the skills of science, technology or medicine? Or will they have only the resentments that have been whipped up by the likes of Jeremiah Wright or the sense of entitlement from the government that has been Barack Obama's stock in trade?

In the real world, a sense of grievance or entitlement, as a result of the mistreatment of your ancestors, is not likely to get you very far with people who are too busy dealing with current economic realities to spend much time thinking about their own ancestors, much less other people's ancestors.

Another seemingly unrelated experience was being in a crowd at a graveside in a Jewish cemetery last week. That crowd included people who were black, white, Asian, Catholic, Jewish and no doubt others. This country has come a long way, just in my lifetime.

We don't need people like either Jeremiah Wright or Barack Obama to take us backward.

The time is long overdue to stop gullibly accepting the left's vision of itself as idealistic, rather than self-aggrandizing.

Racists come in all colors.
When the majority of those who believe the poverty pimps and suffer from guilt wake up, maybe we will see changes for the better. As of now it is those who scream the loudest and most outlandish that seem to get the attention.

But the poverty pimps and the dividers can't make their living by admitting that although we have racists in the country the country as a whole is not racist. No other country in the world provides the opportunity to people from all backgrounds, races and sexes to those who are willing to work toward their goals. Time to see through the shrills and lies.

Choice
Your life is all about your choices - which create the outcome that is the life you're living. Every choice and act is of personal self-interest.

The question, always to those who want others to take care of them or save them, make excuses or lower the bar, "what are you willing to do to get what you want and how bad do you want it?"

Never let people off the hook or absolve them of their personal accountability and responsibility for their choices.

Nail, Meet Hammer...
Enough said.

Didn't I read this yesterday?
Judging is judging.

Misunderstanding is no excuse, either.

this author appears to write for your
support. Just like Hillary Clinton speaks from the pulpit for her share.

It is pandering and popularity all rolled up in one motive.

I cannot go along.

Deja vu

We did read this yesterday. These Random thoughts invite repeating. The mentality of rugged individualism with a core internal compass embedded in the hope of Christianity is fading from the landscape as shrill immature self absorbed voices flood the airways and fill our news with their narcissism and ignorance.

Welcome to the future for we will become incapable of defending ourselves.

Amen to Dr. Sowell

Thinking about ancestors
In my own experience, time spent learning about my particular ancestors has provided a helpful basis of self-knowledge from which to respond to and defend against grievance mongering and bullying assertions of "Rights" based on ancestry.

Excuses
When anyone uses his color, his neighbors, his clothes, his money or lack thereof, or any other external thing for his own failures, he is doomed to failure. Anyone wanting an education can get one, there is an article today in Wyoming about a young girl graduating as valedictorian of the local junior colledge and high school both and together.

I e-mailed and asked Dr. Sowell if
he would include the following in some future column and would appreciate any comments on the question from TH readers. Although not directly related to this columns topic, it is tangentially related.
The e-mail follows:
"Great column!
Will you please in a future column discuss the Obama AND Clinton concepts of "The Working Class" (to which they often refer) and two co-points:
1.) The fact that the U.S. is (supposed to be) a "Classless" society; and,
2.) Among what "Class" do both Obama and Clinton consider themselves to be included?

I ask this of you because IMO it will take a World Class Economist such as you to evaluate whatever data may actually be available to answer this question.

Best regards, always,
Tom"

Soldier of Christ
I admire this man named Thomas Sowell. I see the writing on the wall when it comes to Obama. I am a colored person, no bigotry on my end. Obama has the entire state of Illinois under his control, even the Police Department. If the incident that I brought up on this blog happened to a white gay trinity man who was involved with a white gay man who was accusing President white Bush of sexual conduct- it would be all over the network. Why? Because it would be a republican- second it would be a white man. Obama has had a free ride with the sexual accusation of two men, one was found executed four months ago. The chicago police department is dragging their feet in putting the phone calls from this gay trinity choir connection to the Obama's sexual accuser - to the Obama's camp. What is holding up this investigation? Nothing. It is what we call "protecting the black man". The Chicago Police department should come out and make an announcement stating that "no calls were received between the dead gay man, Donald Young, and to Obama. Period! But, they or the Obama camp refuse to make comment on this and instead keeping winning the hearts of out ignorant young and liberal whites. God can see ALL- and it is time for someone with strenght and courage to bring the Chicago Department to treat this case as every other case and not one that is bought.

.....COLOSSUS

Obama The Divider
When Obama wins the Democratic nomination and/or the presidency, we will hear endlessly how he is uniting America. This is actually liberal group think as they feel that by electing a "black man" we are showing how we have grown as a society.

The problem here is that a President Obama will actually have to make decisions. His voting track record does not indicate he is going to do any favors to the half of the country that are conservative. Just what kind of judges will he appoint to the Supreme Court?

Also, exactly how is a windfall profits tax going to benefit our society? While companies physically collect and write the check to the US Treasury for taxes collected, they really don't pay them. All taxes are paid by the consumers. So, in an effort to reign in the oil companies they will actually hurt the actual purchasers of gasoline. Everything associated with gasoline will also raise their prices to cover increased fuel costs.

This is happening right now, but this does not matter to Obama. The perception of going after the oil companies plays better politically than the reality of all of us getting hurt even worse in the pocketbook.

Clarity is power.

Dr. Sowell, thanks once again for pointing out the obvious... and with such simplicity and eloquence.

Summing it up in one sentnce, they are indeed "...playing the audience for suckers in both cases".

Regardless if it's upscale, or ghetto... the demagoguery of victimization and grievances has sadly become the "opiate" of the envious and the resentful.

How enticing, and how intoxicating; the power to point the finger at someone else for your own shortcommings. Talk about getting off the hook, all while feeling fully entitled and riding the tall horse of victimhood and martyrdom.

How tragic, and how destructive.

But how lucrative... for the demagogue.

Obama
Liberals for Obama are like the "OJ jurists",into denial. To say that "wearing the American Flag pin is "taking sides" makes me wonder if he is running for President of the "UN".

Another recycled column?
Not by the good doctor, but by TownHall. Wasn't this orginally posted yesterday? I'm pretty sure it was, and that by the time I saw it (around 13:00 Eastern time), there were around 40 posted comments.

I think there's a lot that can be done to improve this website, from having a more powerful server and platform that can handle the number of hits the more popular articles get (ever try to post to an Ann Coulter or Mike Adams column in the afternoon? half the time, the page won't load), to better editing and paste-up.

My mother didn't know anything about politics and I know very little.

But I know that good people fervently believe;

You are known by the company you keep.

The three evils
Dear fellow lemmings,
Somewhere I read that our choices are, 1) a socialist DEM who panders to race dividers, Islamofascists and other terrorists, 2) a disordered facist DEM who desperately wants to rape America for her own personal financial benefit, and 3) a senile, too-old, arrogant, abrasive, manipulative liberal DEM pretending to be a wattle-necked GOP "conservative".
I consider the infamous wannabe-clever "lesser of two evils" talking point to be both a spiritual and intellectual fraud. I believe so-called "democracy" works only when you vote FOR what you believe in most, instead of AGAINST what you fear most.
Accordingly, I respectfully decline to choose among the evils, even if that may appear to some short-sighted folk as "wasting" my vote.
For those of you who are hopelessly addicted to a desperate belief in Tolkien's One Ring (of political Power), consider this: any vote at all is a vote for the kingship of the inherently evil and inevitably corrupting herd pecking order struggle over the kingship of the God of the self-owning and self-determining individual. See, e.g., 1 Sa 8:5-20; Jg 8:22-23; Jg 9; Ps 118:8-9; Ps 146:3; Jer 17:5; Mt 17:24-27; Acts 5:29; Ga 5:1,14,18-23, Php 3:20, 2 Tim 3:5, which chronicle the human struggle with "politics".
So, have fun with your choices, fellow lemmings...and good luck!

Racism
I never thought that I would see the day when whites would be playing the race card as if playing in a poker tournament. At every turn, whites are crying racism. The ignorance of the Sowell ilk is as apparent as an African American at a board meeting of the council of conservative citizens.

RE: whites playing the race card
I see no problem with caucazoids dealing out a little tit-for-tat in the political poker tournament. Blacks of the Jackson/Sharpton ilk have been playing the race card in a nonsequiturian manner forever.
Suggesting reading regarding political tit-for-tat: “The Art of Political War” by David Horowitz (ISBN: 1890626287).
In any intellectually honest discussion about economics, it IS self-evidently possible to sincerely believe that coercion-based socialism and wealth redistribution are evil and unworkable without actually being a "basher", "hater", "racist", "bigot", "misogynist", "homophobe", ad nauseum. Yet the left, particularly the Jacksonian/Sharptonian left, has for decades operated under the false premise, "I'm black. I'm a victim. And if you disagree with me, you're a racist. Now what was it you wanted to talk about?"
Based on that manipulative nonsequiturian premise, the standard Jacksonian/Sharptonian talking point is "Everything is Whitey's fault, so give me your money, Whitey, or you're a racist".
Because I have NEVER heard even ONE white person say, either 1) "I'm white. I'm a victim. And if you disagree with me, you're a racist. Now what was it you wanted to talk about?" or 2) "Everything is Blackie's fault, so give me your money, Blackie, or you're a racist", for the life of me, I just can't seem to work up much shock, outrage, or excitement at the prospect of a few whites dishing out a little political tit-for-tat.
