Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Many years ago, a great hitter named Paul Waner was nearing the end of his long career. He entered a ballgame with 2,999 hits -- one hit away from the landmark total of 3,000, which so many hitters want to reach, but which relatively few actually do reach.

Waner hit a ball that the fielder did not handle cleanly but the official scorer called it a hit, making it Waner's 3,000th. Paul Waner then sent word to the official scorer that he did not want that questionable hit to be the one that put him over the top.

The official scorer reversed himself and called it an error. Later Paul Waner got a clean hit for number 3,000.

What reminded me of this is the great fervor that many seem to feel over the prospect of the first black President of the United States.

No doubt it is only a matter of time before there is a black president, just as it was only a matter of time before Paul Waner got his 3,000th hit. The issue is whether we want to reach that landmark so badly that we are willing to overlook how questionably that landmark is reached.

Paul Waner had too much pride to accept a scratch hit. Choosing a President of the United States is a lot more momentous than a baseball record. We the voters need to have far more concern about who we put in that office that holds the destiny of a nation and of generations yet unborn.

There is no reason why someone as arrogant, foolishly clever and ultimately dangerous as Barack Obama should become president -- especially not at a time when the threat of international terrorists with nuclear weapons looms over 300 million Americans.

Many people seem to regard elections as occasions for venting emotions, like cheering for your favorite team or choosing a Homecoming Queen.

The three leading candidates for their party's nomination are being discussed in terms of their demographics -- race, sex and age -- as if that is what the job is about.

One of the painful aspects of studying great catastrophes of the past is discovering how many times people were preoccupied with trivialities when they were teetering on the edge of doom. The demographics of the presidency are far less important than the momentous weight of responsibility that office carries.

Just the power to nominate federal judges to trial courts and appellate courts across the country, including the Supreme Court, can have an enormous impact for decades to come. There is no point feeling outraged by things done by federal judges, if you vote on the basis of emotion for those who appoint them.

Barack Obama has already indicated that he wants judges who make social policy instead of just applying the law. He has already tried to stop young violent criminals from being tried as adults.

Although Senator Obama has presented himself as the candidate of new things -- using the mantra of "change" endlessly -- the cold fact is that virtually everything has says about domestic policy is straight out of the 1960s and virtually everything he says about foreign policy is straight out of the 1930s.

Protecting criminals, attacking business, increasing government spending, promoting a sense of envy and grievance, raising taxes on people who are productive and subsidizing those who are not -- all this is a re-run of the 1960s.

We paid a terrible price for such 1960s notions in the years that followed, in the form of soaring crime rates, double-digit inflation and double-digit unemployment. During the 1960s, ghettoes across the countries were ravaged by riots from which many have not fully recovered to this day.

The violence and destruction were concentrated not where there was the greatest poverty or injustice but where there were the most liberal politicians, promoting grievances and hamstringing the police.

Internationally, the approach that Senator Obama proposes -- including the media magic of meetings between heads of state -- was tried during the 1930s. That approach, in the name of peace, is what led to the most catastrophic war in human history.

Everything seems new to those too young to remember the old and too ignorant of history to have heard about it.

Thank You Dr. Sowell
Waner may have taken two at bats to reach 3,000, but you have hit it out of the park with just one. Great piece, great perspective (as always), and thanks for putting the truth in black and white. I'd love to vote for you as our first black president!

If we must...
If we are so intent on a black President NOW, can I vote for Bill Cosby? Or, how about you, Mr. Sowell? You seem to have a head on your shoulders. Or Jesse Peterson... or???? In an email to a friend recently, I made the following comment:
'It has occurred to me that the citizens of this fine country are so enamored of the idea of having a handsome, young, black man for President that they will overlook any number of sins in order to make it so.'
I think we are in for a rough road no matter who gets elected, but I'm very much afraid that it will be even rougher with Obama at the helm.

Nice sentiment - too late?
"We the voters need to have far more concern about who we put in that office that holds the destiny of a nation and of generations yet unborn."
I wish you'd said that when Republicans were nominating George W Bush. There's someone who has tried to have the Federal government impose social policies and someone who has violated the moral principals of our nation and destroyed the economy, not to mention our standing in the world. Barack Obama or anyone else could hardly do worse.

A question of leadership, for Mr. Sowell
I believe Mr. Sowell's column dismisses too easily Obama's transcendent leadership; that is, Obama is successfully leveraging the country's most valuable asset for improvement and growth: its citizens.

While I don't agree with all of Obama's policy positions, to suggest that he is sneaking into the race without enough vetting--and therefore wouldn't be earning the "hit"--is dismissing how important his message is to many, many people.

A transcendent leader is so rare, I think that even those who disagree politically with Obama should recognize his unmatched ability to speak to the entire country. That ability translates into people listening, possibly agreeing, and even action in their own communities.

I believe a President should be able to do that (I wonder if Mr. Sowell does), and he is the only candidate running who can.

Mr. Sowells Columns
I sometimes wonder how one author can be so right on the money so often. With rare exception his writings display a logic and insight so good that all his columns over the years should be put into a book and heavily promoted. Keep it up Mr. Sowell.

Thank you Mr. Sowell
I am in awe of your insight. I wish my brothers and sisters across this country would grow up and learn to think for themselves, see for themselves, REASON for themselves, open their eyes and their minds and see all that is staring them in the face....before it is too late. You, sir, have inspired me and have given me hope. Thank you....I only wish we could get more people to read this article. I for one have attached it to MYSPACE...I hope others will do the same, or something similar.God bless.

Children, Children!!!!
Most of you who comment, are fighting with each other. Stop it!! We should be praising Mr Sowell on his great insight and his ability to illustrate it so clearly. There aren't many with the intellect he displays.

Same reasoning applies a woman
We are going to have a woman president some day. But we can't rush in like the Democrat fools and elect a bad one.

Having a facist for president like a liberal democrat is doomsday for a generation or so.

When we find the right people; good, honest, America loving conservative candidates black or a woman or both. We can elect them.

Yes it is your positions and ideology not your race or gender. We just can't stand liberalism. Period. No socialism, no fascism. period.

Best Qualified Candidate
Each election cycle, we get further and further away from the reason to vote for a particular candidate.

Two years ago, the democrat nomination was "given" to hillary. She was not required to do anything but to be a democrat. She was assured of at least one third of the votes for President for no reason other than that she was a female.

Out of the woodwork steps her new nemesis, b. hussein obama. What were his major qualifications? He was black. Sure, he could talk the liberal talk, but more than any other factor, his race was his primary qualification. Suddenly, women who would walk through fire to vote for hillary have found her to vile for the office and have thrown themselves ahead of the b. hussein obama bankdwagon to cover any potholes that may exist. When his "spiritual" mentor's rabit racist remarks become known (having been protected by the MSM for more than a year), b. hussein obama suddenly becomes "aware" of how horrible they are. More "lemmings" jump into the "wright pothole" to protect b. hussein obama.

No matter how vile the comments of obama or his mentors, these supporters will ignore all just to say they helped elect the first black president. No matter how unqualified, how ill-prepared, how dangerous obama is proven to be, these followers will be there on election day.

One phrase (paraphrased here) from his first book that MUST never be allowed to lie dormant is this one from b. husseing obama. "When things get rough, I'll take my stand with the muslims." We know well that such a statement sits well with the vast majority of the left, but the Conservatives and Independents who have considered voting for b. hussein obama will do well to take that phrase to heart when they enter the voting booth.

Emotional reactions to Obama
Mr. Sowell,

Your continuous and baseless whining about Barack Obama being "slick" and a "demagogue" is pretty rich coming from the same so-called "conservatives" and so-called "independent thinkers" like yourself who in 2000 told us how wonderful George W. Bush is; that Bush was more qualified than John McCain; that Al Gore was a serial liar; that John Kerry was a coward and a phoney Vietnam soldier, etc, etc.

I can accept that there are still people who love all things Bush/Rove and Republican, but I wish you and your conservative friends would at least try to reconcile these glaring gaps in logic.

You are among those "independent thinkers" who still defends and passes over obvious lies like "Mission Accomplished" and the like. Oh yes, and America "does not torture."

If you cared about intellectual honesty, you would admit that George W. always was a lightweight who would not have been Texas dogcatcher were it not for his father's last name. But instead, you would have us believe that he is Socrates, and God's gift to America.

As for Rev. Jeremiah Wright, I refuse to be lectured by conservatives who, for 25+ years, have cynically associated with hateful gay-baiting charlatans like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

It's fine if, in the year 2008, you still believe in McCarthyism and guilt by association, but try to be consistent.

When you call Obama a "fraud" you are merely projecting your emotionalism and insecurities.

Please know that there are readers who see right through your sophistry.

Criteria for worst President Ever

impeachbush,
Before you get in too deep I think you need to re-examine your rhetoric. According to you, the criteria for worst president ever is:

"If you, my fellow Americans, will not demand the impeachment of the worst president in American history, a man who is a traitor to our Constitution, an instigator of unjust wars, a destroyer of worlds"

Now if that is the case, then there is a president far worse then GW. Abraham Lincoln threw the constitution out the window when he went to war without the consent of Congress, he instigated an unjust war when the South seceded, which they had every right to do by the way, and because of this war he completely destroyed the Southern "World". Now is you are willing to take on the burden of proving this to be the criteria of worst president ever, you are going to have to prove that the social and economical reprecutions of Bush's terms are worse than that of the American Civil.

Good luck with that.

The Real Mystery
Great points Dr. Sowell, but given all the talent in our great country, one must ask--Why are we given such poor choices? Why are those who are far more suited for the job not applying?

Thanks, Dr. Sowell...
...you nailed it again! Our nation is faced with many-faceted problems, but the media treats this presidential contest as if it were a tawdry beauty contest.

Moreover, we are dominated by the bogus global-warming crowd who delay, deny & destroy our ability to provide a reasonable energy policy for our nation. We need nuclear energy, off-shore drilling as well as harnessing alternative sources that do not require that we burn food for fuel.

As a conservative 'typical white person' GOP activist, I am ready to vote for a black man or woman for POTUS. However, because I am NOT a racist, I will always vote for the candidate who most nearly represents the ideals and values that I believe are important to our republic. Neither Sens. Obama or Clinton fit the bill.

And that, in short, is why I will not vote for Barack Obama. He is a fraud, clearly, but he is also a dangerous fraud because he associates with known, admitted terrorists and racists.

Both Obama and Clinton are puffed up balloons full of media hype. God help us if either is elected, given the dangerous problems facing our nation.

Dang you, Sowell
I was hoping that you would hang tough, but like you said "nothing McCain can do would inspire you to vote for him, but Obama could do some things that would". Apparently Obama has crossed the line with you. I must admit McCain is starting to look good to me (groan). The girls all look prettier at closing time, sang Mickey Gilley. I'm afraid i'm gong to wake up with a coyote job next November.

Look to the Past First
I believe that those politicians who constantly say, "Look to the future" are doing so because they don't want you to look at the mistakes of the past. Particularly when they want to make the same mistakes again.

Don't they say that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over again and expecting different results?

Gestell
The US did not fight WWII over fascism but rather because of an unfortunate incident on December 7th, 1941 (almost as bad as 9/11). While liberals back then lacked perspicacity and morals they at least had courage and character, unlike today's.

Contrast FDR's reaction to Pearl Harbor (and Germany's declaration of war) to the cowardly response of post-9/11 liberals. Many did not even approve of military action in Afghanistan. Why is there any controversy over the appropriate course of action? The left should wallow in shame for allowing partisan bickering to undermine national security. Very few on the right, in contrast, opposed military action by democrat presidents.

reply to Nyarlathotep
Thoughts reached while reading Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism" blog. If the US became "fasicst" under the Progressives and FDR, then we have to revise our history of WWII. WWII was really an intramural spat between the "liberal fascists" (the US and UK) and...what do we call them?...the "fascist fascists," perhaps?

it made me laugh outloud
this is such a wonderful article, i wanted to comment on that and thank dr.for writing it. when i started reading what others said. i was embarrased by some of it, irritated by some of it and i have to admit to laughing out loud at more than one time. how plain it is, how some have something to say... say it... and if it has nothing to do with the subject, somebody will be so outraged with it they will answer so the termites are in. wasting our time . i read until my contacts started to stick. what i learned was a lot about people. i do not believe some "commenters" even read this article. they just used the space to yack up the cause they like to promote. like the rev. write, the cause is THEM. i vote to block impeachbush. he might scare so kid.

100%
A+
But we are still in deep dodo.

Great article
Dr. Sowell,

Your analogy and your references to history are so accurate to the political situation we are in today. I have frequently wondered and still do, whether or not the young folks following the demagogue Obama will ever wake up to the reality that is Obamamania?
I admire Obama's enthusiasm and the things he says need to be changed but the reality is that he personally nor the far-left liberals can begin to make the changes he espouses or that the country really needs. They can however leave us with a legacy that only the power of a dictator may be able to correct, and then only to the nation's detriment.
Again, thanks for your insight and your message.

imp
Thanks for the mind reading but it doesn't fly. These guys will go to their graves wanting to blow up this country.
~
It just all went wrong. The Founders didn't end slavery, killed Indians, America is an imperialist, fought communism, built up the military, etc, etc. And worst of all gave these idiots an education and the ones on my side are making stupid arguments on a conservative site. Of course I still want to kill war mongerers in this country. Using the excuse of fighting some poor Muslim cutting heads off to go after their OIL! I wish we could blow up every military facility in the wasted country. (except I'd probably get my a$$ shot off).

On second thought, Go Obama!

Impeach Bush
Sorry, but you don't get the last word. You came close to using the last words but you can't claim what you have been cutting and pasting from others.

Odd how you equate "protesters" with people using explosives. Ayers is still relevant because he did these things 40 years ago but is bragging about them even today. I suppose when all of one's synapses are not firing they are attracted to another like soul, Bernardine Dohrn, who praised the work of the Manson family over the LaBianca murders. Such a union would probably produce offspring of such stunted mentality.... like.... well, you. Fot this I will forgive you ability at true original thought.

As for the racism, the Republicans have been trying to overcome Democratic opposition to Black achievment from just after the Civil War when blacks were elected to congress from the Republican party to the Civil Rights act that the Republicans pushed through. This, with Democrats fighting all the way to keep black Americans subjugated.

kindel
Yeah, that's what I'm sayin'. :D

Lieberman's car
...and it's probably a Prius, seating two.

liberal misinformation
I'm still laughing at Proud Liberal's almost touchingly foolish notion that he and the other libs who post on this site are "educating" anybody...

Conservatives get the lib party line in every classroom, every newspaper, on every news channel and as a result can write out all your points verbatim. You are a waste of time and space here.

The people who are incapable of learning are libs who will not give up any of the tenets of their "religion" no matter how many times these are refuted with facts and logic. They are like a dog with a bone, still gnawing away at Gore was robbed, Bush lied, Blood for Oil and other clunkers. Repetition is what liberals substitute for reasoning.

The information stream should be moving in the opposite direction but even if conservatives were willing to dirty themselves in the fetid swamps of the leftist blogosphere, they are immediately censored, unlike here. Conservative fingers get a workout scrolling past the usual lib suspects whose posts they actually read, leave in place, even respond to and finally inevitably lose all respect for on the nth repetition of Bush derangement or bumper sticker slogans.

Libs' fingers on the other hand are muscular from hitting the delete button for anything but lib orthodoxy while blathering on about their non-existent tolerance for other points of view.

I'd like to know where the principled liberals hang out, besides Lieberman's car.

Cont....
Why Obama (Jimmy Redux) cannot be president:
Instead of a Carter event we would have an Obama Disaster

Cater Event -----> Obama Disaster

1) Iran Hostage = Iran Nukes US City, via Hamas proxy

Obama's reaction "I find Ahmadinejad's reactions objectionable but I cannot disown him as an oppressed man of color, any more than I can disown by Muslim Father"

2) Gas Shortage = Government Attacks on Oil Companies

Obama's constant refrain of "evil oil" plays to the liberal lemmings but anyone with an understanding of basic economics knows that governments involvement in Supply & Demand issues is destructive. If not please read Dr. Sowell's books on this issue.

3) Malaise = Recession, a real one not the Media fabrication type

Obama's plan to INCREASE taxes on business's and individuals will PUSH us into recession. As Obama pushes people DOWN from into the so called "Middle Class" he will push them right on down to the lower class, and then OOPS gotta raise more taxes to pay for more people on government support... Economy continues to slide, more people on welfare.

The one silver lining on an Obama Presidency is it should be only one term, until the Naive voters figure out that OBAMA is the worst POTUS since.... well since Carter...

God willing we get another Regan to lift this country from its Obama induced coma.

Par Excellance Dr. Sowell !!! BRAVO
Dr. Sowell, You are my Mentor!!
Principles and logic not Hate and Envy..

For those of you who are so politically naive to vote for a "Change you can Believe in" because you are not They, you are the US we have been waiting for.... Blah ... Blah ... (insert stupid new age political slogan here) ... Blah.. Blah.. Drink more cool-aid comrade, "Yes we can"!!!!

I remember the real worst POTUS in this century Jimmy Carter, he put America in a self induced coma and called it "malaise" (Liberal Hint: This is not what you put on your Bagel and Sprout sandwich)

If it was 1970's again I could abide an Obama presidency to prove to this generation that Socalism / Liberalism is destructive to America, then bring in a sweeping Regan Reformation but the the Dangers of Jimmy Redux are too high in 2008.

Obama will kill our economy and by government take over of health care and credit markets and anything else he wants to take over, maybe he can call Senior Hugo for advice

Only one mistake in the article.
With all due respect, I did find one error in this amazing article:

"Many people seem to regard elections as occasions for venting emotions, like cheering for your favorite team or choosing a Homecoming Queen."

I would submit that far too many people consider cheering for their favorite team far more important than an election... even a presidential election.

Communist Goal #17
Communist Goals-- Congressional Record- Appendix, pp. A34-A35
http://www.uhuh.com/nwo/communism/comgoals.htm

Take note of;
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda.
Soften the curriculum. Get control of teacher's associations. Put party line in textbooks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The knowledge of the people is what makes a society what it is.
Detracting from that knowledge damages the entire society by making it less affluent.

People are what they know. Each thing you learn becomes a part of you and makes you proportionately more than you were before. Your possibilities in life are expanded by what you learn and limited by what you do not know.
The purpose of Communist Goal #17 is to cheat every person in our society of the opportunity to learn, thereby depriving you and your children of an opportunity you otherwise would have to become all you could have been if provided an honest education.
The lifestyle of each American has been worsened to some extent by the Communists among us.

Our Public Schools are now indoctrinating instead of teaching.
People who are not taught to acquire knowledge are easier to deceive.
That is why it so easy to micro-manage their lives with bunko scams like agrarian global warming.
Notice how all the properly indoctrinated buy that hoax, hook line & sinker?

Communist parasites are damaging the lives of every American to further their political ambitions.
If Communism was a good thing, would they need to "dumb you down" to get you to accept it?
Notice they oppose school choice vouchers?

Kindel: Love; your conspiracy theory
But tell me why conservatives believe that the great American public is so dumb and helpless?

Dumbed down education? That was TV done that, my friend.

Every heard of a library or a book store or the Internet. Americans have more access to more information now than every before in history.

People still read. I know because when a hot new book comes out there's 50-75 holds on it before I get to reserve it. Why is it YOU think that we don't avail ourselves the many opportunities to learn, unless you, YOURSELF, are one of those who wait to be spoon fed all your information from a one note (except for us liberals) portal such as Town Hall.

AZPhil
Your plan to vote for Obama resulting in a Republican majority in Congress reminded me of watching Wile E Coyote set up an Acme trap.

Well you asked for thoughts!

Still, a devoted reader, Y

...
-----dwwrobertson answered his own question. It's the education system that has purposely dumbed down Americans so they will not be critical thinkers but swallow the leftist propaganda that passes for curriculum these days. None of this happened by accident.-----

As Vladimir Lenin said:

“Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik forever.”

So many of Lenin’s quotes apply to the leftist dregs in this nation.

“The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses.”

...
Excellent article.

CapeConservative
Being accountable, at times, is a tough thing. But it is extremely helpful for the growth process. It also does wonders for focus retention.

Kind Regards

p.s. impeachbush - thanks for posting. You are a wonderful source of amusement and entertainment. I hope you have a wonderful night.

MNDuck
Agreed! And may I add that Conservatives stand for PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY!!!

Thanks, Dr. Sowell
for another Grand Slam!

So many posters to agree with - re: not the right black/woman; most young voters are VERY much out of touch with reality; a college degree is not a guarantee of intelligence; and, yes, it appears that Senator McCain will be the best of the 3 currently in the running, not perfect, but the best of the 3. I especially like his NO EARMARKS philosophy, as well as his strong support of our military.

We MUST concentrate on voting in November for conservatives in Congress. If we can regain a conservative majority, no matter who occupies the White House will be kept in check.

Nailed It
Thomas Sowell has a distinct way of nailing his points dead-on with seemingly little effort. He verbalizes what we all know is true. The only ones who seem to have a problem with his work are the people who are not even listening (or reading) in the first place. Yet this doesn't stop them from posting inane tripe here, does it?

Let me explain Liberals PL
""Out of one side of conservatives' mouths comes the claim you just made, that liberals believe they can't make it unless they get government handouts.

Then, out of the other side of your mouths comes the claim that liberals are rich, country clubing, latte drinking effete snobs and elites.""

Yes they are, and Yes they are. :o)

There are 2 types of leftist.

Those that expect the government to take care of everything from their health care to potholes. They expect the government to spare them the terrible pain of having to make their own decisions. They want the US to be France, so they can be cared for by the loving nanny state.

Then the 2nd type are the ones who plan to be part of the special ruling class with the dachas in the hills, while making rules for the proletariat to follow, (exempting themselves of course).

From your typical post PL, I'd say you fall into the second group.

So, yes, "liberals" can be both welfare losers AND Latte' libs.

Of course, you should have been able to discern that yourself, you are after all an "Enlightened" liberal who sees the "Nuances" we conservatives ignore, Remember?

Liberal Logic is an oxymoron, like my friend willi said above.

Bob
has drawn the first two thirds of his post right out of 9th century Catholicism and the danger of immanentizing the eschaton, which Erick whatshisname warns us about, which affects authoritarians as much as us liberals.

The last third is a non-sequitor. Nice touch, though. "Charisma is the opiate of the masses."

Proud Liberal 6:58
I can't let your comment go about Conservatives, justice and equality.

Conservatives DO care about justice. Conservatives want every individual treated justly from the greatest to the lowest. Conservatives DO NOT want individuals assigned group status and then confer special rights on those groups, i.e. affirmative action.

Conservatives DEFINITELY want equality for everyone. Equality of opportunity NOT equality of outcome. Only look to education for the example. Every time that conservatives try to install some kind of accountability in the educational system, it is the liberals/democrats who fight them every step of the way. From vouchers to merit pay, it is a struggle.

INHO every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. This does not mean that I will accept and embrace other peoples thoughts, beliefs or actions. But I do know what I believe to be true and am constantly looking for more information to lower my ignorance level.

Regards

It can't happen here?
Pappy (4/29/08 @ 8:41 a.m.):
Dead on. George Mosse's "Nationalism & Sexuality" points out that the demographic roots of the Brown Shirts lay in a back-to-nature, anti-industrial Romantic movement. Milan Kundera spoke of "the inherent violence of Romanticism." Academics buried the Romantic roots of Naziism that had much in common with the roots of left-wing ideology, and did a disservice to those who really hate totalitarianism.
The far left manifests the self-fulfilling prophecies of its postmodern, anti-hierarchical, subjectivist, emotivist beliefs. Convincing itself that truth is wholly subjective, and that all “truths” are created equal, it loses any standpoint from which to confront its own beliefs, i.e. question its assumptions. Lefties leave themselves open to any slick charmer who tells them what they want to hear, even if it seems too good to be true.
Charisma is the opiate of the masses, even elite “masses”. Most academics are so confident in their intellectual sophistication that they're blind to the peer-pressure that makes them one of the least ideologically-diverse demographics in America. And now, that intellectual hubris blinds them to their emotional vulnerability to Obama's charismatic Kool-Aid.
Obama seems like a sincere enough guy, but he also seems to be an unfortunate black male who internalized just a bit too much polite charm as a means to get past racial prejudices. He dosn't seem insightful enough about his own masks to be trusted. He seems to have had difficulty grasping that there IS a discrepancy between his public demeanor and his association with Wright, as if his being a nice guy should have made the discrepancy irrelevant. And he apparently doesn’t grasp the discrepancy between his far-left ideology and his desire to unite people, that it's not just about style, but that substance-of-belief matters to others.

schooled in group lib think
dwwrobertson wrote:

What makes so many Americans ignorant? Is it a failed education system? Is it apathy? I think it could be self absorbsion. This generation of mine makes me sick sometimes.

I wonder...it seems like it is in the interest of the ignorant ones in power (i.e. Barack) to keep the rest of Americans ignorant too. It is real 1984 stuff.

Like Ravi Zacharias says, "the only thing worse than nostalgia, is amnesia."

dwwrobertson answered his own question. It's the education system that has purposely dumbed down Americans so they will not be critical thinkers but swallow the leftist propaganda that passes for curriculum these days. None of this happened by accident.

Though the communist left lost the Cold War, they followed the Gramscian plot and burrowed underground, sprouting up like poisonous mushrooms and eventually taking over the entire education system from kindergarten through university. Add to this the mainstream media and entertainment industry, which provide the circuses that keep citizens distracted.

As the two Marxist disciples of Saul Alinsky candidates for POTUS demonstrate, the Gramscians have also succeeded in taking over one of the major parties as planned and have made huge inroads in the criminal and (in)justice system.

In all spheres the push is to program an increasingly ignorant of history populace into believing that government is the solution to all their problems. The USA is being lead like zombies into a voluntary Soviet Union state where the "re-education camps" have already started for those resistant to their brainwashing in the schools. There are numerous cases of people being forced into "sensitivity training" as well as censorship (especially by universities) of free speech.

Now even the Presidency is being treated like a combination of an affirmative action program and American Idol popularity contest.

For indyconantidim re "Defeatists"
For the record, some of the most severe critics of Pres. Bush and his Iraq policy include:

- Town Hall columnist and Conservative leader, the late William F. Buckley, Jr., who as long as early 2006 called the Iraq War "Pres. Bush's failure."

= Sen. John McCain, who for years criticized a "terribly mismanaged" war.

- Town Hall columnist and National Review Editor Rich Lowry who wrote last October that "The U.S. government has never brought to bear its resources in a truly national effort to win (the Iraq War)."

- Town Hall columnist Cliff May wrote on March 20 "One can say the invasion of Iraq was unwise: Before committing troops to battle, a president should have a realistic understanding of what can be achieved, in what time frame, and at what cost. One can say the occupation of Iraq was bungled."

Also, May wrote "The result of so many errors and misjudgments was catastrophic."

And Mitt Romney has stated that after initial success the Iraq War was "misrmanaged. underprepared. underplanned and understaffed."

You have a point, Indy
Which leads right into the values arena and into continued reflection on blacks in America.

Liberals are in favor of justice and equality and conservatives are not. Conservatives say, by way of rebuttal to government instituted justice and equaliy, that "the processes are what is important and may, on their own, produce a justice and equality better than that which is government mandated."

Conservatives, though they might be sympathetic and even compassionate as individuals, want to maintain the status quo of class power in the United States. The bottom line is that Sowell's processes do not work to produce justice and equality, which should be seen as choices within the marketplace of ideas and ideals which Americans may choose if we so wish, and many of us so wish. Blacks would still be third class citizens if many Americans didn't choose justice and equality and choose government as a means to implement these value choices. Transfer payments are a choice that we have made and they are a good thing. And we're way better off than if we'd depended upon Sowell's processes to make America a more just and equal place.

Our elections create, a facade of choice
AZPhil,
Love your posts and as a fellow Arizonan not wanting to vote for McAmnesty think you may have hit on something given free rein Shrillary will make such a mess that the Dems won't get to loot the white house for a long long time. I guess what worries me most is the judges she would appoint but then who's to say the Manchurian Candidate would appoint ones that we would hope for. It is the unknown with him that scares me there are no surprises with the other two liberal nitwits

Cleverness
"With any luck, the first "person of color" to be elected to the White House will be... Governor Bobby Jindal (R) Louisiana."

I just said the same thing last week!! Though, in 2012 he will only be 41, a definite disadvantage.

clever
I don't know much about him but any conservative that takes responsibility for Louisiana is definitely optimistic and part of the solution.

First President "of Color"
With any luck, the first "person of color" to be elected to the White House will be... Governor Bobby Jindal (R) Louisiana.

He has the distinction of being the guy who took on a job NOBODY really wanted: cleaning up Louisiana. I don't just mean Hurricane Katrina, I mean real ethics reform in a state which made the Clintons look like a busload of singing nuns.

It may be too soon to be talking about 2012, especially since McCain wants him for a running-mate this year, and anything can happen in 4 years, but if Jindal represents the future of the Republican Party all is not lost.

Sorry, Proud Liberal,
but that argument doesn't float unless you bring in the government sector. Led by who since FDR. Primarily Democrats. Once Republicans came into power the transfer payments were so established there was very little conservatives could do about them.

Kimmer
Been looking for a chance to do this, since I think Sowell is such a bad economist. Among the most damning of Sowell's claims is made on page 113 of "Vision of the Anointed." And I quote:

"...particular solutions to particular problems are far less important than having and maintaining the right processes for making trade-offs and correcting inevitable mistakes. To those with the tragic vision, the integrity of processes is crucial--much more so than particular causes."

I would substitute "consequences" for his last word "causes." What Sowell says is really damning. As an example, he would feel that things were just going swimmingly if the free market (which Sowell cites as a process) was operating just as it should, whatever the consequences for people in America. Poverty, even increasing poverty and widening gaps in income are just fine with Sowell just as long as the process is humming along.

And at the beginning at that same paragraph Sowell says: "In the tragic vision, individual sufferings and social evils are inherent in the innate deficiencies of all human beings, whether these deficiencies are in knowledge, wisdom, morality, or courage....What is needed in this [tragic] vision is a prudent sense of how to make the best trade-offs from the limited options available...."

If you read closely enough you will find that Sowell acknowledges that the key point is "who makes the decisions" about the trade-offs, and he does acknowledge, if you read carefully, that those people with the social and economic power in America determine the trade-offs, i.e., who gets what.

And I'll bet you a dollar they don't make decisions about trade-offs which harms their own status quo positions.

Taking credit
I want to state to all that I called it weeks ago that Obama would thoroughly denounce and cut from Wright but that it would be too little too late.

Proud
Its not that you can't make it - Its that you require us to provide it for those you think can't make it.

See the difference. You want me to pay for others (children of $80K per yr households). Old, sick and children of the poor. That should be the limitation.

Good luck, President McCain!
I'm sure Prof. Sowell is correct--eventually, there will be a black American president, but that time is not now. Obama began his campaign as a candidate who seemed to transcend race, but as Jeremiah Wright keeps rising up, like flesh-eating zombies in a horror movie, Obama's odds nosedive. The Clintons helped bring race into the campaign, and the Republicans will finish the job. The result will be a Democratic presidential nomination--no matter whether Obama or Clinton gets it--that won't be worth spit.

McCain will win because millions of Democrats will defect to him, fed up with the truly bizarre and hopelessly inept efforts of Obama and Clinton. With their sheer incompetence, they remind me of my party's most recent nominee, John Kerry. I don't mean this as a compliment.

Either the Democratic party deals with the moonbats (they're not really liberals) that control its destiny, or the party will decline even further.

Jackpine Savage
First of all, I never said anything about liberals wanting government handouts.

Second of all, you must have missed my discussion on another thread yesterday when I made sport of the conservative confusion about liberals.

Out of one side of conservatives' mouths comes the claim you just made, that liberals believe they can't make it unless they get government handouts.

Then, out of the other side of your mouths comes the claim that liberals are rich, country clubing, latte drinking effete snobs and elites.

Then comes my observation that probably most of the really successful people in America are liberals who have made it on their own as corporate CEOs, designers, entertainers, sports stars and managers of financial institutions.

So, which is it Jackpine? Are we liberals welfare deadbeats or are we the most financially successful people in America who have made it on our own?

And, congratulations on getting out of poverty twice. Now why didn't I think about becoming a webmaster? I may get back to you for some advice.

Logic
Jackpine_Savage. Ain't PL being logical an oxymoron?

Thomas Sowell article on Barack Obama
Thomas Sowell is one of the most intelligent and historically gifted Americans in the press today. If only we Americans could understand what is at stake in this election.

I hope many US Citizens take time to read more of Thomas Sowell in the months ahead.

Proud Liberal's "Logic"
""The second thing I try to educate conservatives about is that their notion of cause and effect is all screwed up.
If you maintain that people born in or who immigrate to America have a special opportunity that no people in any other country has, because of our freedom, capitalism, spirit, what have you, then you are stating a principle of cause and effect which says that individuals in America are helped by circumstances outside of themselves, by forces outside of their own efforts.
Conservatives can't get that they are confused about this easy and logical concept""

That's a pretty dim view you hold of this country PL.
Of course I'm not a bit surprised, the first thing that socialists/fascists/communists do is to make everything a "Crisis", so the new rulers can come in on their shiny white horses to make things all better for the poor stupid Proletariat.

Conservatives can't understand your "Logical Concept" because it hold precious little logic, except of the Circular variety.

So, No one in this country can succeed without the government offering handouts?
If that's the insane notion you're trying to sell us here, you may as well sell crazy somewhere else, We're not Buyin'

I'm Living Proof that ANYONE can succeed in this country if they Really TRY!

I was born poor, and worked my way out of poverty not once, but twice.
I was disabled and couldn't continue my career as a self made home builder, so I put on a new hat and Learned New Skills, all on my Own Dime, and became a successful webmaster. Now I get to go to "work" in my jammies. :o)

Unlike poor mistreated liberals who have been brainwashed into believing you need handouts to survive, I have done it On My OWN and Never took a dime from the government. If I want something I EARN it.

That must be a totally alien concept to you of course.

You and Savage99, I swear. He thinks there is going to be some kind of economic collapse. I do not agree.

Have you not paid attention to the leftist news media lately? There is nary a word from the dims or the media about defeat. You know the latest talking point of the defeatists was that the "political benchmarks" weren't being achieved and about that time the head Shia of the country attacked the criminal Shia leading the mob.

If you defeatists would shut your traps instead of announcing across the world via the internet that America is lost and will never recover I guarantee this will be like any other American outpost throughout the world. Evil stops here!

indyconantidim writes:

"If GWB was very clever he would have started the surge and promoted Petraeus in October 2006."

Good point. Question is: WHY didn't Pres. Bush promote Petraeus sooner? WHY did Pres. Bush wait until certain defeat in Iraq was staring him in the face before calling on Gen. Petraeus to take over?

Proud Liberal
Don't fall into the dim propaganda trap of painting Republicans and conservatives as racists because they want the national government to be color blind. From all the conservatives (politicians, authors and pundits) I've heard or read they see no difference between Oprah or Katie (women paid exhorbitant sums for their celebrity but out of touch with reality-Katie to a greater extent than Oprah), Rice or Thatcher (except wishing Condoleeza would have higher ambitions) or Barbara Jordan (the eloquent Texas representative we lost to soon - a Democrat by the way) or Libby Dole.

With all this said, its not about gratitude. Its about reality. To say that America has not done anything worth their pride, take advantage of truly American opportunities and then say they are the deliverers of change (which really means the government hasn't done enough for the poor black folk that we've dealt with or hear from from time to time- [meaning] tax whitey) then they are not the answer as uniters. No liberal is. Because they don't compromise and they don't face reality.

If you did you would acknowledge some of the good that Bush and our soldiers have done. When you don't you lose all credibility. That's what I'm saying to the American voter. Vote out these people with no credibility and then there will be real debate.

How did we get here?
The run-up to this year's Presidential election continues to teeter somewhere between high comedy, low camp, and farce. Issues of substance, such as a failed health care system, or a Social Security system that is about to go on the rocks, or a 9 trillion dollar national debt, are lost in the endless, trivial, "he said", "she said" 'gotcha'-type tabloid gossip that is passing itself as a reasoned debate about the candidates. In all the endless printed and electronic 'blather' about the three (3) remaining candidates, and the endless 'dissection' of their latest 'mis-statement' or verbal 'boo-boo', has ANYBODY seriously pondered this question: is this pathetic and shallow, made for tabloid TV spectacle ALL that the American political process, after millions of dollars of campaign spending, and eighteen (18) months of non-stop campaigning, can PRODUCE? The real culprit in this whole sorry affair, that is somehow avoiding the 'limelight', is NOT the three candidates, as mixed in their various qualifications as they may be, but a FAILED political process that cannot produce a genuine dialogue and substantial debate of the very real and serious issues that are facing this nation; or produce a candidate of unblemished and proven integrity to run for the highest office in the land. The spotlight needs to be turned. The joke here, folks, is not on Obama, McCain and Clinton- the joke is on us. And a sad joke it is.

4) Farrakhan et al are meaningless from that day forward. Fifty years ago, they could complain about Jim Crow laws and all-white country clubs. They now have the best golfer in the world, so one problem has been solved. Give them the presidency, and what is there left to say?

5) After two years, Americans will be chapped enough to install a majority of Republicans in Congress to keep this idiot in check.

6) Finally, I think the American people need to be taught a lesson. Now that Jimmy Carter has been out of office for 27 years, many Americans, including many now old enough to vote, don't remember the gas lines, the joke of a military, the inflation, the fear of rabbits, etc. And you can only tell people so many times "the stove is hot", but letting them burn their fingers once teaches them much better. So after we have a repeat of the Carter Catastrophe, including likely attacks on American soil, there will not be another Democrat anywhere near the White House till at least 2024.

Thoughts?

39 and icedog part 1
Let me run something by you:

I am considering voting for Obama in the fall.

I registered to vote in Arizona in January - as a Democrat (hear me out). I did it SOLELY for the purpose of voting against The Wicked Witch of the West (hereinafter WWW) in the primary.
So, here is why I want to vote for this guy:

1) First, it would send WWW to the dustbin of history where she belongs. Seeing her lose the nomination after she presumed it was hers would immunize me from any other bad event for two decades.

2) The economy and energy situations are likely to stay bad for a while. Right or wrong, people blame the president for this. The oil problem will continue to worsen with increasing Chinese demand. If McCain is elected, in Joe Average's mind, "12 years of Republicans in the White House causes high gas prices" will be hard to erase. But when Jimmy Carter Jr takes office and starts implementing naïve foreign and domestic policies, HE will take the blame. Let the prime rate hit 18% again. I don't care - Imy mortgage is fixed.

3) McCain is a liberal anyway. But if he's elected, the foaming-at-the-mouth liberals will blame Republicans for everything from Iraq to oil prices to "global warming" (HAHAHA). Let them run the show for a while; we'll nitpick.

That describes Olbermann to a T.

"Of course, I also oppose state-sponsored religion, support gay marriage, and despise the myth of innate American exceptionalism, so I'm in a weird place."

I think America is exceptional. The most powerful guys (the Founding Fathers), who had more to lose than anyone and could have just supported the Tories, risked everything to form a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, versus the monarchies they were accustomed to.

"Do you not understand facetiousness?"

Yes.

"While we're at it, conservatives call liberals fascists all the time, and Jonah Goldberg certainly hasn't helped matters. Ergo, given that it's the only thing you have to go on, I'd say you haven't met burdens of proof."

The name calling is unnecessary on both sides, and I don't know who Jonah Goldberg is.

AZPhil
So that's your nefarious plan, is it?! ;)

I still think it would be better to prepare for the opportunity for a constructionist Court, than to join the fatalists' club, and miss it.

I noticed McCain is not your favorite person in the whole world. He may be only an ounce of prevention. But for a Clinton or an Obama Court, there is no pound of cure! NONE! Not even a House and Senate majority. IMHO. :)

Happy lib hunting, though! 39

Proud Liberal
"I remember when Clinton was being impeached that conservative after conservative said they would forgive Bill (not understanding the reason for forgiveness themselves) if he would truly repent for his sins. Perhaps American blacks would think about forgiveness if conservatives would truly repent."

There is a small, but key, distinction here. It is impossible for us (conservatives) to repent for something that happened a century before we were born. Should the Italian government now make reparations to all those enslaved by the Roman Empire?

Things were different with Slick Willie. He could have repented for something HE HIMSELF DID, but chose not to.

Well, Nyarlathotep, I gotta run ..
I didn't want to leave without addressing your last post.

You see, I'm a Christian who lives a conservative life, yet I lean left on social issues. The only thing I would quasi argue with in your post is the ".. myth of innate American exceptionalism...". See, I'm not sure how you mean that. I don't necessarily think I'm exceptional because I'm American. But I do believe in the innate exceptioanlism of the form of American government, namely, the Constitution.

So, you see, I'm also in a wierd place. The closest a political ideal has come to where I am at is libertarian. That's little 'l', not big 'L'. Maybe we can discuss this at length another time.

As Paul Harvey says, Good day!

Sowell on Obama
Sowell is absolutely right. Obama is like some sort of Rip Van Winkle character who went to sleep in 1979 and woke up in 2005. He seems totally unacquainted with what occurred during those years and, more importantly, what we learned from them about the economy, international relations, etc. As also seems to be the case with many of his supporters, Obama zombies.

FROG
Here's the trippy part: I'm a conservative in some ways.
I oppose gun control (well, some of it--no Stingers for you), affirmative action, hate crime legislation, socialized health care, and amnesty for illegal immigrants, and I support school voucher programs.
So you don't need ME; you need an actual socialist to get your serious contrast.

Of course, I also oppose state-sponsored religion, support gay marriage, and despise the myth of innate American exceptionalism, so I'm in a weird place.

But you're right, of course, about the flexibility of real-world data with regard to outcomes; that difficulty is why I wanted us to tackle Sowell's propositions, instead of just glossing over them to get to the hatefest on Obama.

AZPhil
Do you not understand facetiousness?

While we're at it, conservatives call liberals fascists all the time, and Jonah Goldberg certainly hasn't helped matters. Ergo, given that it's the only thing you have to go on, I'd say you haven't met burdens of proof.

That, or Jonah Goldberg is a liberal.

Oh noes! Whatever will you do?

Icedog
You're right about the necessity of explicit advocacy for a point of view, so a viewer can watch two shows and get two opinions.
That's not my problem with Hannity per se. I believe you can be an identified conservative, or liberal, or whatever, while still avoiding all of the detestable qualities I've already mentioned.

Being an advocate doesn't mean you have to be rude, monotonous, and consistently insult the intelligence of your viewers.

For the sake of balance, by the way, Al Franken's show sucked. Horrifically. I've tried Air America, and it was a travesty.

Nyarlathotep ...
A good look at history and a fair amount of introspection are requisite to knowing both where we are and where we should be going. But I'm sure you also know that you can bog the process down in unnecessary Monday morning quarterbacking.

I'm confident that we could look at the exact same set of social data and come to completely opposite conclusions. Will one be right and the other wrong? Possibly, but I doubt that either of us would be entirely wrong. I do believe that I would be on stronger Constitutional grounds, generally speaking, with regards to the roles of governments.

Still, as much as I disagree with your views, I am of the mindset that we need each other. The contrasts we offer society are like Taoisms Yin and Yang.

You are right!!

Nyarlathotep. (Pronounced either ni-ar-lat-ho-tep or nyar-lat-ho-tep). The messenger of the Great Old Ones, also named, among other things, the Black Man. Nyarlathotep is considered an Outer God. The Haunter of the Dark is an avatar of Nyarlathotep. Nyarlathotep is the messenger of Azathoth and the one member of the Mythos who deals on a personal level with human beings in general. He is described, in his human form at least, as being of the old native blood of Egypt and looking like a Pharaoh. Wherever he visits, rest vanishes and the wails of nightmares untold echoes through the streets. Nyarlathotep is especially fond of technology and psychology.

AZPhil
Great! 10 things about me that you don't know are true!

Your due diligence and research before insulting someone is truly impressive. I'm assuming that either
(a) You lack the sophistication to understand more than a binary spectrum of political beliefs, so anyone who argues with you must be a "lib."
(b) You're too dense to actually respond to an argument, so you rummage through your Box o' Pre-wrapped Ideerz for the closest thought you can find to "AZPHIL HAZ OPINIONZ! YOU LIB!"

Indyconantidim
You have agreed that Michelle and Barack have done the heavy lifting in getting to where they are now, just a breath away from the greatest position on earth,i.e., they took "Personal Responsibility for their Lives;" you have agreed that an outside force, "America," helped them along.

But their level of gratitude doesn't satisfy you; nor their freely chosen associations suit you. Gee, that's tough.

I get the impression that conservatives want blacks to be the saints that conservatives themselves cannot be. Blacks are supposed to forgive and forget all that they have experienced in their lives and forget. You basically complain because they are human; they have feelings about what they have experienced; they can recognize the bad things about America as well as the good. You would have them wear emotional and intellectual blinders so as not to offend your sensitivities.

I remember when Clinton was being impeached that conservative after conservative said they would forgive Bill (not understanding the reason for forgiveness themselves) if he would truly repent for his sins. Perhaps American blacks would think about forgiveness if conservatives would truly repent.

I agree 100%. I don't mind liberal commentators like Olbermann and Air America. What I mind is liberal commentators such as Dan Rather, Katie Couric, and Walter Cronkite who masquerade as "impartial reporters" and say stuff like "and that's the way it is" with a straight face.

indyconantidim
Hannity may certainly have been "correct" about Obama and Wright, in that (as I assume you mean) he probably concluded that Wright was more or less insane and that Obama is accountable for having been so intimately associated with him.

Is this an act of intellectual integrity? Maybe; at least, I don't think he's lying about this particular set of facts, or even misrepresenting the story, since Wright did say these things.

My problem with Hannity, rather, is that he immediately draws the conclusion most advantageous for his "side" and NEVER thinks any more about it. He's plodding and predictable, to the point that in listening two or three times a week for a year or so, I never heard an act of mental agility, a perspective I hadn't considered, or a conclusion I hadn't already expected him to draw. I'm not saying that he's a liar, or that he eats baked puppy for lunch, but he IS a simple-minded propagandist with an almost Manichean hatred for thoughts outside his predetermined opinions and an annoying tendency to use synonyms as a stand-in for eloquence.

AZPhil, about that number 8 ...

Thanks for the comeback, Vic!

Hannity is a self-declared "Reagan Conservative" and has never tried to claim to be objective or impartial. He spends four hours a day exposing liberal hypocrisy and the danger of liberal beliefs. He has no responibility to "show the other side"....he is also self-described “conservative political commentator” - not a news anchor.

Americans are already saturated with the "view from the left"....and conservatives wouldn’t have a problem, if liberal MSM journalists (the large majority) would at least be honest and identify themselves as “liberal political commentators” and stop trying to pass themselves off as “objective journalists”.

Indy part 2
6) Find rights in the Constitution that no one else can find (like privacy) while failing to see the ones written in black and white (see the 2nd Amendment).

7) Never hold liberals accountable. Whether they lie, cheat, steal, run the local Klan chapter, or leave someone underwater to die, elect, and re-elect, them to public office indefinitely.

8) Have two standards defining what "greed" is. If CEOs make millions, they are greedy. If liberal actors make millions pretending to be someone else, that's just the fair market at work. If gas costs $3 a gallon, that's pure greed. If movie tickets cost $9 each, again, the fair market at work.

9) Complain about imaginary problems while ignoring real ones (this is an offshoot of #2). Call any Republican president "Hitler", or a fascist, or stupid and claim he's trampling on civil rights while the media lampoon him daily. Then, praise Castro and Chavez, who actually do respond to political enemies with imprisonment, torture, and death.

10) Praise the ignorant while condemning the educated. Bush, who went to Harvard and Yale, is stupid. Sean Penn, who couldn't finish college (or maybe high school), is brilliant.

You get the idea...

Indy part 1
Looks like Nyarweirdo is up to Step 9 (you will see in part 2):

How to Be Good Liberal".

1) Apologize for things you didn't do (See Clinton apologizing for slavery) and do not apologize for things you are responsible for (adultery, selling military secrets to China, not capturing bin Laden, pardoning Marc Rich for money, suborning perjury, giving nuclear reactors to North Korea, sending American troops to Bosnia for no reason, etc, etc, etc).

2) Address imaginary issues (global warming) and ignore real ones (muslim terrorism).

3) Equate "feeling" with "helping". Just because conservatives contribute more to charity means nothing; they don't "feel" as bad as you do.

4) Do as I say, not as I do.

5) Cry over the executions of mass murderers while fighting for everyone's right to kill fetuses.

Whoa, whoa; hypocrisy?

Whence hypocrisy?

I thought we were being fairly civil until now. How am I a hypocrite?

While we're at it, I think "lib" needs to be put to bed. It doesn't really mean anything, is only used by conservatives, and just ends up sounding like an ethnic slur.

On the subject of Obama and Wright, Hannity had it right from day one (in all contexts) and I think the term "intellectual integrity" comes into play here. Don't you? I know the intellectual I listen to (Dr. Sowell) does.

Nyarlathotep
Nyarlathotep was a character in H.P. Lovecraft's pulp horror stories from the '20's and '30's. I don't know if you've ever read them, but they were fairly influential in horror and science fiction (ever heard the name Cthulhu?)

Anyway, he roams the world in the guise of a man, causing madness and chaos, presumably to pave the way for demonic entities that sleep "beyond the stars" to come and dominate the Earth.

I chose it more or less at random, not because it carries a particular meaning for me, but it certainly seems to draw attention, which I guess is good.

Also, the motif of inducing insanity seems particularly appropriate for a political discussion board.

Nyar you forgot your
finely honed lib lefty's mantra - H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y

I think you've introduced a new distinction; originally, you took liberals to task for tactics of "personal destruction."
Lies are entirely another matter.

Before the element of truth was introduced, I was trying to point out that picking a side and then oh-so-selectively running unpleasant stories ONLY about the other side (a la Hannity), no matter your political affiliation, is the worst kind of obfuscating tribalism, and guarantees that substantive ideas will not be discussed within miles (figurative ideological miles, anyway) of your venue.

Hannity may operate strictly within the bounds of fact (eg, "[these literal words were in fact said]"), albeit completely without context if he so chooses, but he's a political thug for whom no serious intellectual should have any respect.

Once again Dr. Sowell is right on...
Thank you, Dr. Sowell. Nothing more needs be said.

And no I won't quit calling you Shirley. Hannity is like Joe Friday. You may not like the delivery but its just the facts, ma'am, just the facts. You may not like hearing them over and over again but that's your problem. You can always turn it off.

The libs, on the other hand, feed each other stories, most unconfirmed, and then keep reporting it over and over on front pages and the top of news shows even after its been refuted. If you can't see that you're not as sharp as I assumed you to be.

"Old Newness"
I worry more that the 'old newness' is just a means to get into the White House, and that once there the 'new newness' will manifest itself.

cleverness
You're probably right; I think I left an option out, which might belong under the "inevitability" category: "Was it caused by something unrelated to Great Society programs?"

Actually, my punctuation unnecessarily emphasized my last question, so I should rephrase for brevity and clarity:
"Were the respective policies Sowell cites--those of '30's diplomacy and '60's social programs--responsible for the unpleasant results he lays at their feet?"

From there, did they simply play a causal role in the particulars of what would have happened anyway, or are they morally culpable for the events per se (a massive global war; a lack of progress against ignorance and poverty)?

In the case of Watts, for instance, what Democratic policies led to violence? I don't think the much-maligned welfare system had had time to do its work.

Obama is Redemption
Vote for Obama and get salvation! You'll be assuaged of all guilt if Obama gets elected.

Since I don't have anything politically to be guilty about, I'll vote for some one else. But if you believe America's collective sin can be absolved just by electing a black man, then Obama is your guy.

Excellent article
The liberal's plan is coming to maturity. They alter history, teach socialism, and turn our boys into wimps. We've conditioned our youth (in public schools) to be "Kool Aid drinkers." Is it any surprise that they can't think for themselves? So many of them follow the w/out question. If B. Hussein Obama wins, the long-term agenda of the liberals worked!

Draft Sowell for President!
That's all I can say.

"DID 60's progressivism cause social unrest, or was it an inevitability? Or was the unrest necessary to fix some glaring evils in the system?"

Schools were desegregated in the 50s, the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. There was no great social injustice responsible for Watts or the riots of 68.

So, if I'm reading you correctly, liberals rely on personal attacks to discredit their opponents, which is shameful.

By contrast, Hannity's usual strategy of digging up any and all dirt on his targets and throwing wads of said dirt at them every night for an hour is...heroic?

Please explain the difference between "Clintonista" ad hominem attacks and Hannitism.

And What of the Future?
Right on as usual, Dr Sowell.

You speak of riots back in the 1960s, but wait until Obama is defeated---whether as a Democrat or in the Presidential Election. With his 'friends' in the fore, riots will be occurring all over the country because a 'black' was defeated.

A liberal black who has minimal qualifications and a hatred for his Country defeated? Horrors! The crowds, led [incited?] by the Reverend Wright and Al Sharpton [with help from the usual gang of rabble rousers] in their speeches---well, these crowds will be tearing our cities apart. And you can forget about an Inaugural ceremony and celebration. They will probably be canceled due to the great unrest.

Whether one of the two Democrat Liberals or John McCain is elected, we will be having immense local, national and international difficulties after 2008. Sad but true.

Quiet! (Obama is Toast)
Obama has no chance of winning in November. Please don't tell the Democrats.

So, policy...
We've pretty much established that at least half the people here think that Obama is a filthy Commie traitor, a Trojan Horse of entitlement programs, lawlessness, and racial resentment...
...or whatever.

However, I find it odd that everyone (including my fellow America-haters) is ignoring Sowell's arguments about the effects of Obama's putative policies. Sowell didn't say, "Don't elect Obama because he's evil;" he tried to address particulars. We're not even bothering.

DID 60's progressivism cause social unrest, or was it an inevitability? Or was the unrest necessary to fix some glaring evils in the system?
DID 20's-30's Kellogg-Briand style diplomatic hubris cause WWII, or was it rather the pains of post-monarchy, post-industrial puberty for much of the world?

Right. Pol Pot, Mao, Kim Il-Sung, Hirohito, Saddam Hussein, and Idi Amin were all white dictators. Didn't you know that?

But since "Hitler was worse", those guys were all okay. Get it now?

Obama nailed
All this anti-Bush syndrome or Bush derangement, whichever you prefer, has been a smoke screen for the liberal agenda. The Clintons, thanks to Perot, were able to position themselves as centrists, while Reaganites put conservatives in Congress in '94. From that time to now, the Clintonistas have introduced the personal destruction tactics with their libs, media and special interest buds. Terrorists (2004) and anti-Clintons (2000) cost them the presidency but their manipulation of youth (academic Stalinists), Democrats and minorities with the anti-American media has been shameful and now the do-nothing Congress has come home to roost (gas and food). Obama, thanks to Ayers and Wright, with kudos to Hannity for staying with it, will not win. The Clintons will pull back and wait for '08. I hate to sound like a broken record. Throw out the dims and rinos. Join and communicate in your districts.

Cleverness of me ...
The half-white/half-black comments are all racist comments that only blacks can understand. Therefore, Obama only half-understands it!

--Sowell is absolutely right, Obama (I find it interestong that sooo many commentators like to refer to him as Barrack, yet it is always McCain or Clinton)is a 60's throw-back and a pacifist. If all the white libs need to ease their consciences by voting for this clown (the epitomal affirmative action success story) then they need to take responsibility, difficult for a lib, for the damage done for generations to come.

I was reading Curtal Friars blog on the holocaust and the poster on TH known as Akagi, aparently his last name, started in about how Europeans and their offspring, Americans, are the worst offenders of barabarism in history.

So CF tells Akagi that his blog on the holocaust is not the place to discuss this and tells him to write about it on his own blog. I don't have a link to it, but I read it today and it was a joke. Every time he wrote about an atrocity committed by some Asian culture, he was quick to add a "but" in there tell about how Europeans and Americans, read "whites", were even worse offenders.

Somehow, I pointed out, he was turning a discussion on the Holocaust into a pi$$ing contest about which societies were the worst offenders. I get tired of hearing about how despicable I am simply because I'm caucasian. I would be run out of town on a rail if I even insinuated that about some other minority. Can you say double standard?

Impeach, whatever
your referrence to "rounding up foreigners living on our soil" being an impeachable offense is kinda funny since your side's hero already did that to the Japanese during WW2- and I don't remember any impeachment proceedings- but I might have missed it eh?

I've been all over the internet and heterogonous is not an easy definition to find. At least any that fit your context.

Left-brained
My guess is that Rev. Wright was not thinking of Thomas Sowell when he declared that blacks are "right-brained".

If you think about it more, if Obama is half-white and half-black, which side of his brain does he use? From the debates I would conclude that he is still waiting to make a decision about which side of his brain to use.

I second what CubeCommander said. Also, please explain how America is less racist than wherever you come from. America is the most heterogonous country in the world.

1953 - The Impact of Science on Society by Fabian Socialist Bertrand Russell is published in which he declares: " I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology....Various results will soon be arrived at: that the influence of home is obstructive....although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated. When the technique has been perfected, every government that has been in charge of education for a generation will be able to control its subjects securely without the need of armies or policemen....Educational propaganda, with government help, could achieve this result in a generation. There are, however, two powerful forces opposed to such a policy: one is religion; the other is nationalism....A scientific world society cannot be stable unless there is a ONE world government.

All the power of politics, and of Congress, and of the administration is under the control of the moneyed interests and men lacking ideals or morality. The adversary has the force of capital, thousands of millions of which are in his hand. He will grasp the knife of law, which he has so often wielded in his interest. He will lay hold of his forces in the legislature. He will make use of his forces in the press, which are always waiting for the wink, which is as good as a nod to a blind horse. 3 candidates all the same
I am puzzled that not ONE political group has addressed the hijacking of the Primary Voting system and most particularly NASS, aka National Association of Secretary of State in regard to what they (NASS) are proposing as a fix for the 2012 Primary elections
It is obvious that our choices were extremely limited in the 2008 Primaries to include only the most liberal candidates possible, with the upper echelon of both parties insuring that the early elections weeded out the more moderate or conservative candidates.
Do you know how the Primary system has evolved and by “whom” the dynamic has been put in place? and do you think, similar to the Presidential election, a more equitable all state inclusive ONE DAY voting Primary format should be instituted?
Not one word has been uttered by politicians, pundants or conservative publications as to the existence in this NASS or how it has been involved to this mess that even NASS refers to as chaotic and unfair. See web site nass.org
NASS has to date come up with a very questionable fix regarding 2012 elections and are appealing to Congress and to both top party officials to consider this fix.
The web site, nass.org should be a site that all concerned Americans are directed to particularly by organizations that are (truly mainstream or) really concerned with the fair and equitable out come of our nations election for the highest office in the land.
Finally, it would appear that there is no single group aware of, or representing the mainstream with this issue based on responses from talk show hosts, publications and polititians.

Old is "new"
Mr. Sowell is right on the money.

I would also add that almost everyone recognized a long time ago the Vientam War was a terrible mistake. The only way we could fight it was because the country was saddled with a pernicious and outmoded institution--the draft.

A lot of people want to bring it back, and McCain may be one of them. But so is Obama, who wants to institute not just a draft, but "national service", primarily to promote a leftist social policy. He clains it will be "voluntary", but not without co-ercion to "volunteer", and how long before this "good idea" becomes compulsory.

The young people flocking to Obama because they think he's against the Iraq War (he voted to fund it three times), should not get the idea he's opposed to a draft--for social purposes.

Eight Years Too Late
Dear Mr. Sowell:

In your column you write: "There is no reason why someone as arrogant, foolishly clever and ultimately dangerous as Barack Obama should become president."

Your words come eight years too late. There are many of us out here who, in 2000, felt the same way about George W. Bush. Who as you know was named President by our Supreme Court and has proceeded to divide and undermine our once-mighty country, demonstrating just how arrogant, foolishly clever and downright dangerous a President can be.

Obama = A second Carter's term
Dr. Sowell is correct. Obama offers nothing new at all. He's just running for Jimmy Carter's second term, both in economic policy and international policy. He offers nothing but the same tired old neo-Marxist drivel packaged in a cleaned up corpse.

Fortunately, Obama has been fatally tainted by his associations and has no chance of winning a general election in November. We should all say good riddance to this flawed candidate.

"Are you saying it is all the white mans fault that all these various influences hold other races back?"

Of course it is. People who are red, brown, black, and yellow never killed each other, waged war, or enslaved anyone. Only the EVIL WHITE MAN has ever done these things, and he must be EXTERMINATED as retriubtion.

Proud Liberal
You continue to be confused by an old, but common liberal misconception. America and its founding principles are based on “equal opportunity” - not “equal results”. No two people are exactly identical in their abilities, motivation, intelligence, etc. Hell, a single man isn’t even the same in these areas on different days.

Not one conservative on this site has ever claimed America just handed everything to Obama (so stop making crap up). People criticize Obama and his wife because they complain about how “mean” and “racist” this country is...although it is this country that provided the “opportunity” for their success….something that would have been extremely difficult or impossible in most other countries.

You and other libs don’t fight for “equal opportunity, you want and expect “equal results” – which can only be achieved by taking from some and giving to others, regardless of their efforts. And of course in your fictional utopia, you and a handful of other self-anointed intelligentsia would be the ones to control and distribute all the goodies.

Wright/Ayers. How Sweet It Is.
There's a duo for you. But these two are really NOT friends of Obama. In fact, anymore "friends" like Wright and Ayers and Obama won't even hold his Senate seat. No. These wackos are best buds of none other then........ John McCain. Yep!

For John McCain, Wright and Ayers are like gifts that keeps on giving. And it looks like they will continue to do so right up until election day.

How Sweet It Is!

Social structure only affects the arc of the individual if they allow it. Your view of humanity is skewed if you think people can only be victims of circumstance.

Proud Liberal
What we have come to see in Obama is that he is not the shining character you liberals portrayed him to be at the beginning of this campaign. With the MSM not reporting on some of his current and past associations, he has been able to get this far in his candidacy. No one is saying that America gave them what they have. We do say that the freedoms in this country have provided them with the opportunities to get where they are. But M. Obama isn't proud of this country until now.
Your argument holds no water.

Obama the Unknown
Obama is wrong on the issues and his race is irrelevant. But what is relevant is that after a long campaign, the American public is finally realizing that they know very little about Obama, his past, his associates, and his clverly hidden beliefs. Every time that we learn something new about the man, he becomes less attractive. As a Republican (and McCain supporter), I find that Obama has accomplished the impossible, that is, to make Hillary seem like a more acceptable alternative.

Nyarlathotep ...
on the ribbet ribbet ....touche'

The reason.......
BHO chose his identity....His mother and father left him/weren't around and was raised by his grandmother. He felt kinda like a victim of life's circumstances so he identified with the culture of self percieved victims. This inner victim thing was constantly bolstered by the radicals both black and white that he hung around with. And, so he is today. Even his wife identifies herself as a victim of the white culture at Princeton. At least that is the way it seemed to me when I read her Senior Thesis. They make quite a pair......the poor kids. They are already victims and don't know it yet. But not to worry. I am sure that reverend WRONG will enlighten them.

"America" as cause
The second thing I try to educate conservatives about is that their notion of cause and effect is all screwed up.

Someone in another country who takes "Personal Responsibility for their Lives" cannot therefore be all that they could be if they were, by comparison, in America.

Logically, then, individuals in America who take "Personal Responsibility for their own Lives" may be effected by variations WITHIN America and what they can be is not wholly determined by their own efforts.

Once we realize that, our next step is to determine the presence, strength and direction of these variations on individual Americans.

Conservatives can't get that they are confused about this easy and logical concept.

"Okay, please tell Will hello for us."

AZPhil, buddy! Do you KNOW something you're not telling the rest of us?"

Nope; mere speculation.

We are we ignorant?
What makes so many Americans ignorant? Is it a failed education system? Is it apathy? I think it could be self absorbsion. This generation of mine makes me sick sometimes.

I wonder...it seems like it is in the interest of the ignorant ones in power (i.e. Barack) to keep the rest of Americans ignorant too. It is real 1984 stuff.

Like Ravi Zacharias says, "the only thing worse than nostalgia, is amnesia."

If you don' t you're racist
'If you don't vote for Sen. Obama you're racist' is just exactly what the good senator is counting on to get elected. That was obvious from the interview on Oprah with Michelle and Oprah discussing his eminent danger simply by being a black man in America. That was the set up. The senator has used it ever since. Disagree with him or ask a question he doesn't want to answer or is incapable of anwering and your picking on the black man. Question his ability to unite and you're told he is the best person for the job because he is both black and white and therefore understands both sides as no white candidate could. The racists in this election are not the voters who will not vote for Sen. Obama. The racists are the senator, his wife, and friends.

Call me racist all you want, but I will not vote for a man whose agenda will set race relations in America back to the 50's. We've come too far to ever accept that again.

Obama's "Personal Responsibility"
What a great country.

I constantly try to educate conservatives on Town Hall about "Social Structure" and how it affects the arc of the individual. Town Haller's will have none of it, of course.

Instead, Town Hallers insist that anyone can be anything they want to be, regardless of barriers in their way, if only the take "Personal Responsibility for their Lives" and have gumption, initiative, yata, yata.

Here we have a man in Obama who has taken "Personal Responsibility for his Life" and made the most of his opportunities without any help from anyone (as conservatives profess to believe is how the world works) and now stands a hairbreadth away from the greatest, most powerful position in the whole world, and he did it all himself.

But wait, suddenly conservatives are talking out of the other side of their mouths. Obama didn't do it all himself. His taking "Personal Responsibility for his Life" doesn't mean anything, didn't result in anything.

"America gave Barack and Michelle everything that they have." It wasn't them at all, after all, everything they have was given to them, by America.

That's talking out of both sides of your mouths, conservatives.

Impeachbush
You make me laugh.

So basically you are saying Bush is guilty of protecting this nation against its enemies. Something that Bill Clinton failed to do and certainly something Obama or Hillary will fail to do.

I recall FDR's mass round up the Japanese (one's who were US citizens no less) after Pearl Harbor. I guess he should have been impeached.

(1) Did Obama actually propose this? Is there a school of economics that holds that additional taxation will make goods cheaper?

How stupid can you get?

The first black president
I agree with Dr. Sowell.... Many are too anxious to elect the first black president. I just we had a better black candidate...e.g. Colin Powell, Dr. Sowell, etc.

Likewise, many are too anxious to select the first female president. Again...not much of a choice here either.

Although John McCain is not my ideal candidate...and many feel he is too old, we should be patient not to rush into the "FIRST black or female president."

We need divine guidance on this election.... Please vote what is best for America...NOT what will be a Historical event.

It would seem that if he were such a strong candidate running on substantial issues the campaign would not need defending but his ideas could stand on their own merit.
