Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

What was he thinking of? That was the first question that came to mind when the story of New York governor Eliot Spitzer's involvement with a prostitution ring was reported in the media.

It was also the first question that came to mind when star quarterback Michael Vick ruined his career and lost his freedom over his involvement in illegal dog fighting. It is a question that arises when other very fortunate people risk everything for some trivial satisfaction.

Many in the media refer to Eliot Spitzer as some moral hero who fell from grace. Spitzer was never a moral hero. He was an unscrupulous prosecutor who threw his power around to ruin people, even when he didn't have any case with which to convict them of anything.

Because he was using his overbearing power against businesses, the anti-business left idolized him, just as they idolized Ralph Nader before him as some sort of secular saint because he attacked General Motors.

What Eliot Spitzer did was not out of character. It was completely in character for someone with the hubris that comes with the ability to misuse his power to make or break innocent people.

After John Whitehead, former head of Goldman Sachs, wrote an op-ed column in the Wall Street Journal, criticizing Attorney General Spitzer's handling of a case involving Maurice Greenberg, Spitzer was quoted by Whitehead as saying: "I will be coming after you. You will pay the price. This is only the beginning and you will pay dearly for what you have done."

When you start thinking of yourself as a little tin god, able to throw your weight around to bully people into silence, it is a sign of a sense of being exempt from the laws and social rules that apply to other people.

For someone with this kind of hubris to risk his whole political career for a fling with a prostitute is no more surprising than for Michael Vick to throw away millions to indulge his taste for dog fighting or for Leona Helmsley to avoid paying taxes -- not because she couldn't easily afford to pay taxes and still have more money left than she could ever spend -- but because she felt above the rules that apply to "the little people."

What is almost as scary as having someone like Eliot Spitzer holding power is having so many pundits talking as if this is just a "personal" flaw in Governor Spitzer that should not disqualify him for public office.

Spitzer himself spoke of his "personal" failing as if it had nothing to do with his being Governor of New York.

In this age, when it is considered the height of sophistication to be "non-judgmental," one of the corollaries is that "personal" failings have no relevance to the performance of official duties.

What that amounts to, ultimately, is that character doesn't matter. In reality, character matters enormously, more so than most things that can be seen, measured or documented.

Character is what we have to depend on when we entrust power over ourselves, our children and our society to government officials.

We cannot risk all that for the sake of the fashionable affectation of being more non-judgmental than thou.

Currently, various facts are belatedly beginning to leak out that give us clues to the character of Barack Obama. But to report these facts is being characterized as a "personal" attack.

Barack Obama's personal and financial association with a man under criminal indictment in Illinois is not just a "personal" matter. Nor is his 20 years of going to a church whose pastor has praised Louis Farrakhan and condemned the United States in both sweeping terms and with obscene language.

The Obama camp likens mentioning such things to criticizing him because of what members of his family might have said or done. But it was said, long ago, that you can pick your friends but not your relatives.

Obama chose to be part of that church for 20 years. He was not born into it. His "personal" character matters, just as Eliot Spitzer's "personal" character matters -- and just as Hillary Clinton's character would matter if she had any.

I will admit I didn't know much about Eliot Spitzer before this story broke. In one of the news reports I heard a man named Ken Langone of Home Depot say he hoped Spitzers hell would be a very hot place. That caught my attention.

I then heard other reports of Spitzer threatening and intimidating people who were innocent of any wrongdoing. Sounds like another case of a prosecutor like Mike Nifong who felt they didn't have to follow the rule of law and thought they could basically do whatever they wanted. I feel sorry for his family as they are the innocent victims here. However, I do not feel sorry for Spitzer and he is getting what he deserves.

just thank you
Thank you, Dr. Sowell. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Grandstanding and Abuse
Why does the Scott Spiezio story seem so much like the Eliot Spitzer debacle, because they are that similar?

More commonly than we should be comfortable admitting, those that have the power abuse it.

mmmm,
Spitzer and Nifong and the current political races are a grand argument for placing "none if the above" on all ballots.

After enough weeding we're bound to find someone good.

BEEN HEARING IT ALL DAY LONG
Eliot Spitzers 'desperate cry for help'. With all his money, power and influence at his fingertips, Eliot Spitzer is the 'loneliest man in the room.'
Doesn't that make you all misty?
The moonbats on Puff Blow and the ones that post here have been trying their best all day to spin this as 'just about sex.' 'It's a private matter.' etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Little more that that moonbats.
Money laundering
Illegal bank transfers
Wire Fraud.
I really love the comebacks I've been reading.
Basically, they go like this:
Larry Craig. Larry Craig. Larry Craig. Larry Craig.
You get the picture.
The one good thing that has come out of this is this amoral pig has done this in the first year of his administration and not the third or fourth.
Enough, though.
Read my other posts in other columns to get an idea of what the creep was all about.

Horny Democrat Elf
Spitzer is the latest in a long line of "public servants" who have been inappropriately or illicitly "serviced" in the most intimate manner.

My first reaction is: Are there any normal people left in public office who can control their libidos and egos?

Then there is the predictable Democrat response, that as Sowell says, this is a "personal issue." Democrats always want to downplay character and moral flaws because there are so many Democrats with character issues.

The Clintons; former Klansman Senator Byrd, the Kennedy's, Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Washington DC mayor Marion Berry, LA Congressman William Jefferson, impeached judge and current FL Congressman Alcee Hastings... the list goes on and on.

Republicans have had their offenders too, the difference is that virtually none except Larry Craig, remain in office. Democrats commit their sins and keep their jobs.

THEY KEEP GETTING ELECTED
Brothel keeper Barney Frank. Pederest Gerry Studds. The Duke of Chappaquidick, Ted Kennedy. Let's not forget his nephew, Patrick from Rhode Island who is on Prozac and several other medications and sees a shrink several times a week.
Yeah, that's who I want representing me.
What is the matter with the constituencies that keep electing these people?

Illinois religion
You really hit that one out of the park. Of course, character maters all the time. It dictates what we will do in every specific situation. Look at what the idiot Alan Dershowitz said today: He said that the Elliot Spitzer's “alleged” use of a prostitute was "overblown" and that he saw no reason for Governor Spitzer to resign because in his view it was a "victimless crime" as both parties consented. He leaves out that it was a crime of the state. What does he mean by alleged? Look at all the resources he used to cover up his deeds. The lies he had to tell were many. Look at all the confidences he had to ignore to have his secret life. His wife and kids- what harm has been done there? Look at Clinton-how much of his time was spent in legal battles. Every minute Clinton used to prepare for grand jury or just trying to defend himself, could have been used to benefit the public good How much of the peoples business was left uncompleted? Character does matter. Dershowitz even said that Spitzer’s situation was no big deal and that if it had happen in Europe it would have been on the back pages of the newspapers there. I doubt that and if that is true, I am glad I live in Illinois, which brings me to my next comment. Being a black conservative in this state is liken to being a “new testement “leper”-no disrespects to lepers, but you nailed it with Obama. I do think he is a good family man and I don’t see any sexual imorality in his future. His dad had issues, but Obama seems to have broken that cycle. However, being involved with a criminal in his land deal, does speak to his character. His voting record speaks to his character. His double speak displays his character. Being in Illinois, it is difficult to express this view, but character does matter. It dictates how much integrity we will have in governing and living day to day. Homerun, my friend.

This is the AH who went after Martha
Stewart for "obstruction" because he couldn't get anything else. I have been following the exploits of this AH for a while now and the fact that he would get caught in some peccadillo was ordained from the start. I will wager that there is more too this case than a simple visit to high-end prostitutes.

Great article...
...the last line was priceless!

Thomas Sowell
It would be a better country if everyone was familiar with his offerings.

Do introduce him to your friends ---spread the word.

Client No. 9
This story was made for the tabloids - the NY Post is having a field day with it.

I'm sure it can't wait for the exclusive from the 'petite, strikingly pretty, brunette' on what Spitzer's 'special' requirements were. I'm sure big money will change hands for it. When the bidding starts, watch the rest of his service vendors step forth.

I can see the headline: 'I screwed the Governor of NYS'.

Yes, it IS just about sex...
...The problem is that stories "just about sex" give fantastic insight into the poor character of an individual.

The worst part of this isn't that Spitzer had an affair. That's bad enough. It's that he was using prostitutes, plural. He was getting it wherever he could outside the woman he vowed to "forsake all others 'till death do they part" with. If you can't keep your wedding vows, how can you be trusted to keep your oath of office?

John McCain Number 9
John McCain cheated on his first wife with another woman. We just don't know if he paid her.

John McCain also seeks Vengeance against anyone who dares have a difference in opinion or is critical of his policies.

Do we really want this Arrogant S.O.B. as President?

STANDTALL
"THEY KEEP GETTING ELECTED" Sure they do. Because they are a reflection of the populace at large and and LIKE attracts like.

I also have another theory. These baffoons keep getting elected so "we the people" can point the finger at them and blame them for "doing exactly what we want them to do" for us. While the voters (that is most of the people of this country) prostitute their votes and loyalty to whom ever promises them the biggest piece of the federal pie. Prostitution is prostitution.....The politicians are happy to take the heat for all the perks they get..while the voters have a ready made scapegoat....who actually does their bidding (hence the reelections)...and the voters get to PRETEND to be innocent, asleep, unknowing or something.

I used to think we could wake up the sleepy middle class in America and get something done until I realized they are simply "playing possum" and getting exactly what they want from these clowns.....and it is all to the ruination of this country while the burden is passed to the next generations who have no say in the rape the present generation is perpetrating behind the guise of national politics. Aren't procrastination, greed, sloth, envy, and gluttoney - which motivates current politics, racism, sexism and religious bigotry wonderful things?

Now let all go bounce our babies on our knees and keep them alive to deal with the mess this generation is to self absorbed to deal with.

After all it is more important for our congressmen/women to seat committees to investigate steroid use in professional sports than it is to get our borders closed, balance our budget or deal with the economics of our time. Oh and take time out for "personl pleasure" cause it is sooooooooooooo hard (pun intended).

absolute power corrupts absolutely
I am reminded of the railroad job done on Tom DeLay. Another attorney overwhelmed with his position took aim on a Republican leader with little to no basis for prosecution and ended up taking down the best leader we had in the House. That ego-maniac got away with it. Fortunately, Mr. Nifong did not, and hopefully, Mr Spitzer will pay at least part of the price for his arrogance. I await the announcement today.....

I remember...
When the 'leftists' went after Clarence Thomas about the "private matter" of mere sexual innuendo. Mind you, the alleged innuendo's were never proven, they were merely alleged, like so much spaghetti thrown against the proverbial wall hoping for some of it to stick.

As a result of that circus, an entire body of criminal and administrative law emanated from the federal, state, municipal and county governments. Sexual harassment is now a regular part of 'job' training.

Obviously, Elliot Spitzer is immoral to his core, unethical to his core and ironically, is clearly a man we should all respect. Since this probably involves tax money to cover those 'travel' expenses, make sure you check the election campaign donation box on your tax return.

Yessirree, pay all the taxes you are required. Judge not, lest ye be judged! By all means, let government manage your health care, and above all, respect the rule of law.

Good grief!

Have you heard Alan Dershowitz make excuses for this piece of dung?
Best wishes from Hillary. Now that's a leader.

Another great article Dr. Sowell
One thing I want to point out to all the lefties in the room. This is EXACTLY why government needs to be limited, not expanded. Power corrupts. Spizter and Nifong didn't care who they hurt or whether the people they prosecuted were guilty or not. It was arrogant abuse of power. The more power you give government, the more abuse there will be. Do you want these power hungry AH's deciding health care issues for you? What power source you can use (cheapest or most green)? What car you can drive (put your five kids in a Tercel)? How much money you can make (your profits are obscene; you are too greedy)? Make politicians accountable and don't give them any more power. Our founding fathers were very wise because they lived through the abuse of an absolute monarch. The leftists seem to think that our benevolent elected officials will not abuse us. Horse hockey!! Take off the rose colored glasses, quit taking hits off your bongs and listen to the actual words of all the "revolutionaries" you worship, not just your idealistic interpretation. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Chuck
As much as I think the Republican candidate stinks, the alternatives are far worse in my estimation...

C'mon Chuck
You must have sat up all night trying to figure a way to get John McCain involved with this sleazy story!
I have no clue as to the details of McCains divorce from his first wife, and neither do you, but I am pretty sure that both he and his wife had changed dramatically when he finally returned from his prolonged stay at the Hanoi Hilton.

Goes With Politics at National Level
Why all the surprise? The ego required to believe oneself both capable and entitled to tell the rest of us how to live is enormous. It is no longer about leadership and hasn't been since George Washington. And really, what do we know about George I?

When these terrible acts are committed
we are reminded just how each of us is one meter away from the wrong side of a decision, which can (and will) ruin everything we've worked for.

Those of us who are Christian and follow the teachings of Christ Jesus, will silence the lips and quietly pray for this man, his wife, his daughters and our nation...which is dramatically falling from grace.

We have a vital decision to make now:

Pray as Jesus taught...without judgment
OR
Continue to contribute to the fall by chatting about it.

Illegal and Immoral; and a Great Article
Sptizer is only human. His acts reflect a great decline in the moral fiber of this once great country. Spitzer did not fall in love with another woman. He did not become infatuated with another woman. He purchased another woman for immoral acts outside marriage. He should suffer greatly as he has made, and is making others suffer. I have no sympathy for this person. I will not call him a man.

Thomas Sowell is a great writer and I enjoy reading everything he writes. Thank you.

C'Mon Marion
I slept well last night, with my wife.

It took only a few seconds for me to link John McCain's lack of fidelity to this story.

If Character matters. John McCain has no business running for office.

Hey Nellie
Spare me and the rest of us.

The higher we rise to power and fame
the easier it becomes to be taken in by wrong-doing.

Once upon a time, I flew on private luxury jets.
Some owners truly believed they had the world on their string.

I saw enough to write a best seller for summer reading.

I could get rich on that book. But I would rather leave that to God's deciding.

Each of those men will face his arrogance without me.

Spitzer has just met his.

Parker and for whom you speak
Your voiced opinions are what is destroying America.

Gossip is the anti-Christ.

sorry.

Only One Set of Morals
There can be no wall between a public official’s “public” and “private” conduct because a person has only one set of morals.

Anyone who would violate the most sacred and inviolable promise a human being can make -- the marriage vows -- can never be trusted to keep his word in any matter whatsoever. In the act of adultery he proves that neither his word nor his signature on a contract can hold him if he decides that he would rather do something other than his duty.

We swear office-holders in with an oath for a reason. Those who have proven that other oaths are meaningless to them have shown that their oath of office will be tossed aside just as lightly.

Hitlerys Fault
When Bill committed adultry in the White House Hitlery should have axed his ARSE but instead she did nothing and that opened the door for men. Hell if the POTUS can commit adultry and the First Lady doesnt care. If she would have thrown him out and told the women of America whom by the way thought what BILL did was a persommal thing and didnt care, that women will not accept this then you women could have made MEN TOW THE LINE.

Now I think that what men are doing gets a pass since Hitlery accepted the fact that BILL SCREWED HER, and every man should be able to get a BJ or HOOKERS anytime we want to.

IF you women dont take care of your man(SEXUALLY) he will find someone who will.

Why do men commit AUDULTRY because WILD BILL(CLINTOON) TOLD US WE COULD.

Chuck
Hitlery allowed her man to commit adultry in the WHITE HOUSE and get away with it.

So if character matters what is she doing running for President

Good right up till the end
Spitzer is indeed one of those arrogant people with power who strayed way over the line, and deserves the condemnation he's getting. However, Sowell chose to paste some slams at Obama and Clinton right out of the conservative playbook. HIs last line may make conservatives cheer, but it's a real cheap shot anyway. Also, I notice that Sowell has a blind eye for the moral failings of McCain (and probably for those of any other prominent Republican). So, the net result of what Sowell chooses to say and to omit mark this column as just another bit of partisan ranting.

Nellie
I am a Christian, and I agree that we have an obligation to pray for this man. But we also have an obligation to acknowledge that what he did was W-R-O-N-G, wrong, wrong, wrong! We have a rsponsibility to point out that he sinned against God, and the people of New York have the responsibility of holding him responsible for betraying the public trust. Sitting back and not even talking about it when people do things like this only encourages more of the behavior; why shouldn't people visit prostitutes, cheat on their wives, open themselves up to corrupting influences if there is no price to be paid...since all the "good" people do not want to saying anything "judgemental" about others?

What Eliot Spitzer did deserves all of the public condemnation and the public consequences that he gets. As the Bible teaches us, those things that are done in the dark (in secret) will be exposed to the light of day.

Mr. Sowell
It appears, that you have finally hit something of VALUE.Money and success cannot give you immunity from yourself. This very simple point, should serve to redirect the energy of those in a CAPITALIST system.Self worth is more valuable than things. However, this is rarely taught in this environment.Maybe we need to teach self examination alongside economics 101.Of course we would need to become serious, which might force "US" to adopt a new set of values."US" may have to say good-bye to our present theme song; "MONEY,POWER,RESPECT"!!!

Dr. Sowell
May I suggest that you and Walter E. Williams run for President & Vice-President?

(In reality, at this time we're stuck with an islamo-fascist, a hard-core communist/nazi and a basic communist running for office.)

Stock
I owned both Marsh and AIG stock. The creep Spitzer cost me over $40,000. I am a small investor.

I think he is dirt, scum,a snake in the grass.

I hope a stint in prison is next for this violater of the Mann Act.

Chuck
Hillary is probably the only candidate you don't have to worry about having a sexual relationship with ANYONE!

But, she is also probably the least honest and trustworthy of the bunch.

We have two Socialist and a Lying, Arrogant, Backstabbing, Liberal RINO to choose from.

I'm going to Pick a Write-In Candidate!

Not A Private Matter
Larry Craig and Antonio Villairigosa were not accused of using prostitutes.

Gestell
Dr. Sowell didn't "paste some slams at Obama and Clinton" just for fun -- he pointed out that the Dem nominee, either Hillary or Barack, have serious character issues of their own. Do you not think the public should be made aware of these before the election? Or should we only find out after we have elected somebody with serious character issues to the highest office in the land, in the process handing them enormous power over our lives and security?

I'm sure the Duke lacrosse players wish the public had known about Mike Nifong's character flaws before he became a prosecutor.

Your petty whining is the very partisan ranting of which you accuse Dr. Sowell.

Projection is a terrible thing.

Will Spitzer Pay Enough?
Dr. Sowell is right on the money! However, those that snipe at him and others, who have criticized Spitzer, are way off base in claiming that this is just about sex.

Assuming that the facts, or even many of them, are true as they have been presented in the myriad of articles on this subject, will the government extract the right amount of punishment for his crimes? That’s right – crimes – not just one crime.

It is not just sex. Let’s list some of the sordid crimes:

1. Money laundering – or some form of it.
2. Soliciting for Prostitution.
3. Identity Theft. Eliot Spitzer used the name and identity of George Fox, a close friend and political supporter, in order to cover up his participation in crime.
4. Compounding a Felony.
5. Suspected bribery. Perhaps Governor Spitzer received special hooker concierge service, maybe even a five-finger-discount, for the services rendered to him, in return for his silence.

So while all of you apologists are thinking about ways to let Eliot off the hook, think about these things. It is NOT JUST ABOUT SEX. Right now his mouthpieces are plea bargaining to try to save him from jail time (that one is a no-brainer), trying to keep his law license (if he does, there is no justice), trying to keep any fines to a minimum, and perhaps even trying to bargain possible charges down to a misdemeanor.

Perhaps, just perhaps he should not have to serve jail time for these many crimes. However, if he gets any more favorable consideration than that, then someone should start an investigation of the prosecutors.

More at:

http://americanus.blogtownhall.com/

Gossip is the anti-Christ.
Wow. Talk about dumbing something down.

Spitzer is the chief law enforcement ...
official in NY State. That makes the legal transgressions that "Americanus" listed all the more onerous.

Religous Indignation, Besides the Point!
While infidelity is certainly a very serious sin, this Spitzer clown has shown that he CANNOT BE TRUSTED with the people's best interests. In other words, a hypocrit IS NOT A MAN OF CHARACTER and certainly not someone that should be one of 50 people ENTRUSTED with running states business. In fact, Spitzer should be made to prosecute himself with the same zeal he prosecuted others for paying $250 bucks for something he paid $5000 for. And thus his penalty should be 20 times greater than those Elliot himself sent down the river for.

So sad the people of New York have to endure two politicians with so little CHARACTER. Im talking about Spitzer and Clinton. Heck I cant stand Schumer's poltical views, but at least he has character.

Too Stand Tall
Stand Tall say's
Larry Craig. Larry Craig. Larry Craig. Larry Craig.
You get the picture.

Yeap and those Brain Dead Liberals are "screwing" with their Gay base but they kill and eat their own dead if it means electing a none qualified canidates like Oboma or Billary .
Funny how when a TOTALLY LIBERAL GAY BLADE LIKE BARNEY FRANK
BARNEY FRANK ..BARNEY FRANK ...BARNEY FRANK lay's for a male call guy they never use
BARNEY FRANK BARNEY FRANK BARNEY FRANK as a detractor .

What I want to know
is if the Dems will decry the greediness of these prostitutes! At $5,500 an hour, it works out to $11 million a year. Who needs that kind of money? Only a greedy hooker, that's who!

Character Core
I thank my lucky stars there is a Thomas Sowell and that he is widely read. Dr Sowell is one man who never misses the core of every important issue.

We are exhausted trying to find "character" and "courage" among the qualities of candidates who fall far short of our "ideal" Presidential selection.

We can count on Thomas Sowell to give us the factual data we need to factor into our decision-making processes so that we can choose our country's leader for at least the next four years.

Client #9?
I read on a report that client #10 is a big wig from Chicago!
Just wondering if the "Clinton Machine" stumbled into this investigation? Or caused it!
Now who could client #10 be?
Hillary's friend Spitzer may just be "collateral damage"

GOD
Yes "GOD" is finally pulling the COVERS off of Western Civilization.A place where HYPOCRISY has gone to DIE!Let "US" all, grab a SHOVEL...

I Feel Bad For The Daughters
The wife... not so much. She married this piece of filth and didn't mind when he was bullying and ruining people all these years. She's the genius--so why didn't she see what a vicious creep he was back then? Not a very good judge of character, is she?

Thanks for a great article, Dr. Sowell!
This line says it all: "Character matters."

Re-con USMC:
It's not Barney Frank. It's Barney Fwank. Barney Fwank, Barney Fwank, Barney Fwank. And Gerry Studds.

Goes to judgement
It all goes to judgement. Bad judgement is bad judgement. A governor (or President) with a thing for the ladies could be set up to influenced in ways they probably can't imagine and all of the "peasants" suffer.

reply to christtheprofessor
I agree that character issues are important, and certainly think they should be made public about presidential candidates (or other candidates for public office--note, however, that no one suggests doing this for the private sector. Either character doesn't matter there, or all businesspeople have good character.).

However, it is possible to raise character issues about McCain, and Sowell didn't do that, which is why I said that Sowell is simply partisan, and no more than that, in this column.

Prostitutes & Such
It is always good to see the self-righteous get their come-uppance. Especially ,if they have made a living destroying the reputations and lives of people who are less evil than the destroyer.

Such is Spitzer.New York liberals will tolerate any kind of politician as long as they toe that old leftist line.If he would just wait it out, they will look the other way and put him back up on the pedestal he fell from. Maybe even become a presidential candidate one day.

I want what I want when I want it
42 years ago I looked into the dark brown eyes of a raven haired beauty and I was "smitten". Her and I pledged a lifelong committment and fidelity. We have two beautiful and talented daughters who "trust" their daddy and still ask him for advice. I have traveled the US and the world as a computer geek and have had numerous chances to cheat, and probably wouldn't have been caught. I have biological urges just like the next guy - hey I didn't write the program I just run it. Betraying my best friend, counselor, and lover trumps my urges everytime. Liberals say "it is only sex" and personal character and professional character are different. Liberals say that people like me are "old fashioned" and need to be enlightened. Prostitution should be legalized - I want what I want when I want it should be what we live by. I wouldn't betray the trust my wife has invested in me just to satisfy my urges. Color me stupid and old fashioned if you must - I cannot trust any conservative or liberal, any man or woman who betrays their soul mate and then parades them and humiliates them for self serving purposes.

Reaping the Whirlwind
As the Bible says: sow to the wind, reap the whirlwind. Our American culture has so devalued personal and public morality the last 40 years or so that it is no wonder these political sex scandals keep happening with such regularity these days. We hear that "It's only sex. A person can keep their personal life and public performance separate and the one need not be influenced by the other." I have always wondered why I only hear this argument with sexual infidelities. No one says it's only burglary or it's only murder. The liberal mantra for years was "We should be able to do whatever we want as long as no one gets hurt". Of course when other people claim a grievance out comes the excuse " Well you shouldn't care or claim you are hurt because my selfish right to do what I want trumps your rights or feelings." We are told to "get over it" and let the good times roll. I am sorry folks but character does matter, it does influence how a person leads and interacts with others and you need more of a guideline to life than a vague "try to be nice to people."

Dr. Sowell
It is always a pleasure to read Dr. Sowell's column. This Doctor of economics illuminate the darkest human emotions and desires better than 100 professional psychologists taken together.
He is exactly right on Spitzer, Obama and Clinton. Thank you Sir.

As usual, Great article Dr. Sowell!
retired Geek says: "...any man or woman who betrays their soul mate and then parades them and humiliates them for self serving purposes."

Double ditto! If I have to see one more wife (as thus far that's all it ever seems to be) standing by her man...I am going to hurl from here (TX) to Alaska!!!! As they say, defining deviance downward (aka Derskowitz and such) continues to mainstream deviance by making the unacceptable, acceptable.

Wilson 54
How right you are. Once upon a time, morals meant something to most people.I miss that.We read yesterday that one-forth of young girls has a sexually transmitted disease.Bad decisions bring bad consequences. Our children are now suffering from a lifetime of having parents who have low morals,or no morals.

Marriage vows mean nothing to some people.Young people co-habitating,with no plans for marriage.Mothers with numerous children, all having different fathers,if they even know who the father is.

We are told we are "not with it " if it bothers us.The "free love" generation will reap what they have sown. But so will the rest of us.

Dr. Sowell
What was he thinking of?

The rules apply to thee but not to me! Just another typical day in the life of a politician.

$11 million per year!!
Of course you have to remember that a hooker's retirement plan is only slightly better than a drug dealer's.

Christians are to use good judgement

Please read ALL of the New Testament if you are going to use the "judge not" verses.

Look at 1 Corinthians 5:9-13
9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-- 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. 12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."

Obviously, Christians are to "judge" and expel wicked men from among you.

This is why Christians expect their leaders to be moral men and women. Christians expect their leaders to be held to the HIGHEST standards, not the lowest.

If a man will lie and break his marriage contract, that man cannot be trusted to be a man of the highest integrity to enforce the LAWS.

A dishonest man can be blackmailed or bribed by organized crime to do how knows what.

Blame
I blame Hitlery for she could have set the example when WILD BILL was out there sowing his oats and did his thing she could have set all men straight if she would have kicked him to the CURB.

When women accept that their men are having extra marital affairs(ADULTRY) and dont do nothing about it then they open the door for us to get all the BJs and HOOKERS we want dont they?

Women better start going against these type of problems or they will have more problems on their hands that they need. My wife would have waited until I was on WorldWide TV and then took me out. Whats up with the women of today , they better quit watching OPRAH and get a handle on their men or else. Not everything is settled by crying on the TUBE>

I think that the POTUS who commits ADULTRY and get a pass from the FIRST LADY doesnt set no example for the rest of WOMEN.

I have one thing to say about all of this.
Women take care of your men(SEXUALLY) and they want be out running.

Tip of the iceberg
Like the iceberg that sunk the Titanic the biggest and most dangerous part lies beneath the surface. This jerk as AG of NY had a reputation for abusing his power to go after people who wouldnt kowtow to his wishes. Anyone with that much power must be extra scrupulous lest the seduction of power corrupts his soul. There have been countless examples of officials abusing their power for personal gain or just for the pleasure of controlling others. Thank God this man was discovered before he caused real damage. How is it the so called sophisticated progressive enlightened people of NY keep getting fooled by slick talking politicians like Client 9 and their junior senator? Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to Americans this election year. Character does matter!!! I hope every person this jackass sent to prison files an appeal and it costs the taxpayers of NY billions to look at these cases.

Parker
Like you, I was appalled at Derschowitz's attempts to defend Spitzer's behavior. What does a guy have to do to his wife before Derschowitz refuses to defend him - viciously stab her to death, leaving a bloody trail of DNA evidence? Oh, wait....

O T
So far we as a country will invest no effort in finding or developing men of character to political power. I am referring to Duncan Hunter a man of character apparently who could not be bought by the RINO's. Look back at the fawning of the press over Rudy; "A great American", McNasty and others. I mean Rudy took valuable time away from gutting America with his Trans National Corridor just to allow the media to fawn over his candidacy. True men of character are ignored. I have a dream that Hillary should be very careful or with his resume Elliot will be the next Senator from NY and outlast Teddy the Swimmer.

cleverness_of_me
I had the same thought....once you are responsible for freeing a guy who you know killed his wife (nearly decapitating her in the process) and another....sex with a prostitute would appear to be "no big deal" and "victimless"

(overheard conversation)
Derschowitz: Damn, it's not like he killed any of the girls..."

Dung Beetle
I hope in his next life Spitzer comes back as a dung beetle. It would suit him well.

I think something is being missed
While adultry is a vile evil thing. It's not a criminal act. Transporting women across state lines for the purposes of prostitution is a violation of the Mann Act and a felony. Here we have yet another Democrat who has committed a felony and his base seems to think it's a good thing to have their state run by a criminal. The feds need to indict and have him start trial as soon as possible after all we want a fair and speedy trial.

The Cyclist - Deserves?
"I do not feel sorry for Spitzer and he is getting what he deserves."

If half of what Dr. Sowell says is true, Spitzer deserves a LOT worse than merely losing his job as governor. Heck, I'll bet even still gets to keep his pension for the rest of his life.

If history is any indication, he could very probably run again and win again.

What he *deserves* is some of the treatment he's dealt to others as prosecutor.

Hey Nellie...
Nellie writes:

Your voiced opinions are what is destroying America.

Gossip is the anti-Christ.

Do I detect judgement in your words??

I think I do. Perhaps you should practice what you preach?

By the way, this is hardly gossip.

When is Spitzer going to apologize to all of the individuals he prosecuted for the very same crimes?

Hey Nellie, was he wrong for judging these people?

Was he gossiping when he signed off on indictments?

You, Nellie, and whatever and whomever you speak for, are what is wrong with the country. No sense of morality. Just a pure relativist. Get a grip. The man is a criminal whose crimes for lesser peons would be facing many years in prison. Undoubtedly, Mr. Spitzer will simply walk away with a fine he will pay with his inheritance trust fund and he will end up in some private lobbying firm.

re: "he could very probably run again and win again"

Yeah right, next you'll claim that Marion Barry (who was actually videotaped with hookers while smoking crack) could win another election!

On a side note, elected D.C. Council member, Marion Barry has endorsed Obama for president!

My favorite line so far re "Spitz"
"...if GOVERNOR Spitzer comes up against Eliot Spitzer, Eliot would be UNDER the jail"

Another lesson on liberalism

The Spitzer situation is one more example of yet another flaw in the way liberals think. The notion of people having a rational, reasonable reaction to the misbehavior of a public official is completely out of their realm of understanding. Consequently when one of their own is exposed they act as if the only choices being offered are (a) a public lynching, or (b) a slap on the hand. Just as in the case of Bill Clinton, no one is suggesting that Spitzer be sent to do hard time in Siberia. But the public does have the right, and hopefully the presence of mind to say: “We want better than this from our public officials. It’s time to step down.” This is what is known as a REASONABLE reaction, although it may be a foreign concept to the libs.

Sanctimonious Nellie
Do you not see anything the slightest bit hypocritical in your JUDGMENT that the rest of us are being judgmental? EVERYONE passes judgment on others every day, including you.

Do you not also see the irony that you’re telling us not to comment, even as you do so yourself?

As a public official, Spitzer was fully aware that his actions were going to be held to greater scrutiny than that of a private individual. Even so, he chose to act as he did. Now he has to face the consequences and if that means people talk about him, so be it.

Ding Dong, the Witch is dead!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Eliot Spitzer is out! Praise God!

I have followed Spitzer’s career with a great deal of interest. He is pure evil; his self-righteous arrogance knows no bounds. As has been noted elsewhere, he has made it his life’s work to abuse the powers of his offices to crush anybody who disagrees with him politically.

Spitzer first got my attention for rounding up and imprisoning people for standing on a sidewalk, praying, in front of an abortion mill, then threatening to charge them with racketeering. He has no soul. There is only lust; mostly for power, now, we find out, for a few other things as well.

If there is any justice in this life, he will soon be incarcerated, preferably, as mentioned in the move “Office Space”, in “pound me in the *** prison.” There is no punishment too severe for him to endure.

I don’t care how it happened. He’s gone, and the world is a better place.

Gestell
Do us a favor?

Do a Google search for liberal columns during the heat of the Larry Craig incident, and tell us how many of the columnists took the time to include details of liberal falls from case.

And if they didn't, did you write a comment asking them why not, or accuse them of partisanship?

(Crickets chirping....)

Much too libertarian of you...

...Dr. Sowell.

As usual.

Which is why John McCain will never invite you to become his vice-presidential running mate.

Darn!

Character issues of the private sector
Getsall suggests that business people don't get vetted when it comes to character. Oh yes they do. If you don't like the business practices of any enterprise, then you have the choice not to buy their products or services. If you are an excellent, productive employee and you don't like what the CEO is doing can quit and go offer your services to the competitor. The private sector works just fine in that area. My husband is self-employed and when a customer is unhappy with him he goes somewhere else pronto! When government is dishonest, you can't go somewhere else, it's the government. You can elect new representatives, but when graft and mismanagement occurs it is the public who is stuck with the tab. What a gig. If the taxpayer makes a mistake, he pays for it. If the gov't makes a mistake, the taxpayer still pays for it.

Long John Silver asks:
Thems as accuses others of being judgemental couldn't be the same, could they?

For Doro
Re: "Character matters"

James Madison, one of the authors of the Federalist Papers which were the basis for the Constitution, and the primary author of the Constitution, always held that charcter was the single most important and indispensible quality of a President.

There is no reason to believe it should be any different for a governor.

Bits and pieces
The following info may be of interest to various posters who have touched on these same points.

Re: "Victimless crime"

The feds are investigating Spitzer's use of public money to pay for his tranportation back and forth between New York and DC and for the hotel bill in DC. One group of victims are the taxpayers of New York

Spitzer prosecuted Martha Stewart for lying to investigators who were asking about transactions that turned out to be legal. Who was "victim" of the crime for which Martha Stewart was convicted?

Valerie Plame had already been outed when Scooter Libby gave the testimony that eventually was used to convict him of perjury. Who was the "victim" of the crime for which Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison?

How com liberals never concerned themselves with the victimless nature of Libby and Stewart's crimes?

Re: Character

James Madison considered character to be the most important qualification for President

Re: Private matter

Spitzer, when he was a prosecutor, relentlessly prosecuted prostitution rings. Spitzer apparently didn't think prostitution was a "private matter" when he was prosecuting it.

Re: Tolerance and forgiveness

As a prosecutor Spitzer was essentially an extorionist. His common ploy was to inform a 'target' that the target was going to be investigated and ruined if possible. He would then pressure his target into agreeing to a punitive "consent decree" to avoid the posibility of a guilty verdict and jail time.

It is rumored that the delay in his resignation was so he could use an offer to resign as a plea bargain ploy.

From all reports this guy is a real hardballer when he's got the high hand, or even one high card. He deserves no pity and no quarter now that he has been found out to be the puke that he is.

reply toPrimus54
I don't deny for a moment that liberals who feasted on the Larry Craig affair and failed to mention similar problems affecting liberals were partisan. Of course they were. I just want you conservatives to recognize that Sowell is being partisan when he ignores McCain's behavior. When people are engaged in ideological combat (as all TH columnists are), I expect them to heap all the moral dudgeon they can muster on liberals and give conservatives a free pass. All I ask is that you understand the game.

reply to gayle
When was the last time you (or any other TH reader) heard of a potential corporate CEO who lost out because immoral behavior? Isn't this the way this sort of thing really goes:

Scenario:
Mr. Grey has risen to a position where the board of directors of the company he works for think he's their guy for CEO. Now Mr. Grey has blown through 3 marriages, has been known by a few company insiders to have expensive taste in hookers, and is an absolute genius at increasing profitability of the corporate division he has been running. Shareholders who know of his business dealings regard him as part of the exceptional management team that makes the company a prime investment. Don't you really think that the last fact is all that matters to any of those in the company whose opinions matter? Won't his fellow exeutives really admire him (while making wisecracks about his big alimony payments) for being a man's man?

Yes, someone who knows of Mr. Grey's personal ethics or lack thereof might take his or her business elsewhere, but that wasn't my point.

Gestell
Sorry, it doesn't work that way in the real world...CEO's represent their company and can have a direct effect on the bottomline. A known "whore monger" or sleaze ball will effect a company's image and profit.....and will be 'passed over' or asked to resign. Btw, 99% of the time you will not know who "potential candidates" are unless you're actually on the board.

Gestell
Good, reasoned response.

I think you'll find that by and large, most conservatives know when they are hearing only one side of an argument.

Please understand, though. Until cable news, talk radio and the internet, conservatives existed on a diet that was mostly liberal in nature - so it will be quite a while before the pendulum finds equilibrium.

Care for the sinner, hate the sin
A while back a friend of mine got into a lot of trouble over a sexual matter. The day of her sentencing, I was on tap to testify on her behalf and someone said "Oh, you must not think what she did was wrong. Don't you think that (what she did) was a sin?" My answer was that the sin had nothing to do with my support of the sinner. My friend was wrong, she would pay the price, but she was also repentant and that deserved some mention before the courts (not that it did any good as our state has determinate sentencing). Just because we hate the actions of someone doesn't mean we hate the person committing the actions.

I don't particularly care for prosecutors like Spitzer. They're meglomaniacs who enjoy destroying people because they can. We don't elect our prosecutors here -- they're appointed by the state commissioner on behalf of the governor and then become state employees, safe from removal by the next administration. We have our own mad-dog prosecutors who have done a lot of harm and they will continue to do a lot of harm. Their personal lives are considered unimportant, though occasionally one will get caught with his pants down. Thing is, we should, as a society, care that these people use their power in unethical ways. We're perfectly willing to lock up anyone in my state for so much as walking across a parking lot if they've had too much to drink, but we don't say boo about the prosecutor who inflates charges just to gain a conviction. It's sickening and I for one am glad to see at least one of these government-employed mobsters go down.

Gestell -- CEO's
Oy, still on the private industry comparisons.

"When was the last time you (or any other TH reader) heard of a potential corporate CEO who lost out because immoral behavior?"

I really don't care what a CEO does with his free time.

Maybe if it was a CEO who fired every employee caught with a prostitute, who then was caught with one himself, there might be a newsworthy issue. However, in general, CEO's don't care what their employees do in their spare time, nor does anyone else care what CEO's do in their spare time.

The Governor of New York is a completely different issue, especially given this one's long history and propensity to have people locked up for exactly what he now admits to himself.

Gestell
Your socialist point of view clouds your thinking. Even if the scenario you outline occurs and, I am sure it does, it is a corporation as opposed to a public official. I can assure you the corporation will end someone's career quickly when one's personal pecadillos affect performance. I fail to see any relevance for the comparison. The shareholders are ultimately responsible for the corporation, the public is responsible for its public officials.

Gestell
By the same token, why should we (ok, I'm not in NY) the employers and shareholders of Eliot Spitzer's just overlook his behavior?

Why is Big Government good, Big Business bad in your mind. Why do you deny business the same rights as government?

Sowell or Prager? That is the question (as to who is the best writer on TH). I think Sowell pips the great Dennis. But not much in it.

Nellie must be a CINO
CINO = Christian In Name Only.
As a Christian, Nellie is clueless. She is obviously a 26 USC 501 (c)(3), Ro 13:1; Tit 3:1; Heb 13:17; 1 Pe 2:13; 2 Pe 2:10 kingship-of-man, consumer/client, nominal, so-called “Sunday” statist Christian, as spiritually/morally/intellectually distinguished from Jesus himself and 1 Sa 8:5-20; Jg 8:22-23; Jg 9; Ps 118:8-9; Ps 146:3; Jer 17:5; Mt 17:24-27; Acts 5:29; Ga 5:1,14,18-23, Php 3:20, 2 Tim 3:5 kingship-of-God, anti-statist REAL Christians.
Jesus forgave IF the sinner repented, but he also never equivocated for one second as to what the definition of sin ("Go and sin NO MORE" - John 8:11) was.
If she has the marble count for it, Nellie needs to read "The Kingdom of God Is Within You", by Leo Tolstoy. That is the book which converted Gandhi to non-violence. Another excellent book is "The Divine Conspiracy" by Dallas Willard.
The CLEARLY anti-statist Jesus was no stinking socialist touchy-feely. He said "Do not think I have come to bring peace upon earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to part asunder a man from his father, and a daughter from her mother, and a newly married wife from her mother-in-law — and a man's foes will be they of his own household" (Mt 10:34).
Grow a brain, Nellie. Read a book or two, including the Bible. The CLEARLY anti-statist Jesus died for individual enlightenment (aka salvation) freedom, not New Dark Ages "globalist" feudalism and its collectivist faux "tolerance".

A guy who cheats....
his best friend, his partner - WILL cheat at anything else because he is not thinking with the right head - what an absolute idiot. Thought he was above it all and would never get caught. I hope his wife has guts enough to put them in a vice where they belong. Retired Geek is right on!!!

Michael Vick commited no crime.
Why does Thomas Sowell associate Michael Vick with the likes of Spitzer? While Spitzer didn't commit any real crime, he did support the laws that he violated. Vick is a private citizen and committed no real crime. He owned the dogs. He should have a right to fight them. I personally think dogfighting is barbaric but my opinion is irrelevant. Even if you think dogfighting should be a crime, under the 10th Amendment the Federal government has no power to outlaw it. Sowell also brings up Leona Helmsley. So now I guess conservatives are now pro tax collector.

Pride Cometh Before a Fall
I couldn't help but think of the famous Psalm when I heard of Spitzer's trysts.

reply to Redhead
Just where did I say that anybody should "overlook" Spitzer's behavior? You just assumed you read that in my post because I'm a liberal, right?

Nor did I say that Big Government is good and Big Business is bad--another thing you read that wasn't there.

No, I just think that government and business should be held to the same standards, and I find it very hard to believe that they are. In fact others who didn't like my comments just went ahead and said that business and government shouldn't be held to the same standards. So I think so far, you guys are all on the same page.

Client No. 9 Speaking!
Hello! Hello! Yeah Emporer's Club? This is Client No. 9, I'd like a round the world with glory hole and puss in boots and a she-male as eye candy. What? did you say fifty five hundred the she-male is extra, okay no she-male.
Can I get a confirmation number.

Thank you Tom Sowell
Brilliant article. And perfect to "paste" the slams against Hillary and Barack! We know the egregious character failings of the Clinton team, but the Barack "team" (with Michelle who can't think of anything to be proud of our country!), is the team we're learning about. And what we're seeing is scary enough........that hopefully it provides a stark contrast to McCain (who's not perfect, but looks like Abe Lincoln compared to the disgraces offered by the Dems! -SBourg

Oh Yeah
Oh yeah. Right. To those of you who say Spitzer committed no crime, I say sure, and that's why such an egotist as he resigned his office. He just decided that as governor of NY he should resign. The tragedy of it all is that will probably be all he will have to pay for his crime.
There are those politicians who are caught and then there are those politicians who have not been caught.

Personal Character
Well done, Dr Sowell! I especially liked your last comment. Well done, Dr Sowell!

Elliott Thug
why does no one ever comment on how as AG he extorted money, many millions, from Wall Street cos. and then those "fines" were "given" by him to non-profits of his choice thus buying much influence and many votes? This money should have gone to much needed improvements in the New York judicial system, including better public defenders, say, for, hookers.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (stumbling).

And, it's not a Psalm - it's Proverb 16:18.

Overblown? I thought I was crude.
Yes, Eliot was certainly "overblown" by several thousand bucks worth. You have too be too quick with the novelty tunes nowadays, ready to hit the studio as soon as the newspaper hits the lawn. Therefore my Ballad of Spitzer and Spitzhim will never be made. http://www.moronpolitics.com
