Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Writing in 1954, Lionel Trilling said that most conservatives do not "express themselves in ideas but only in action or in irritable mental gestures which seek to resemble ideas."

One of the perks of being a liberal is disdaining people who are not liberals. However, as of 1954, Trilling's dismissive attitude toward conservatives' intellectual landscape was painfully close to the truth.

Trilling wrote ten years after Friedrich Hayek's landmark counterattack against the left in his book "The Road to Serfdom." But that was a book with great impact on a relatively small number of people at the time, though its influence spread around the world over the years.

Trilling also wrote eight years before Milton Friedman's first book aimed at a popular audience -- "Capitalism and Freedom" -- and a quarter of a century before Rush Limbaugh pioneered conservative talk radio.

They say it is always darkest before the dawn. One year after Lionel Trilling's dismissal of conservative intellectual thought, William F. Buckley founded National Review, the first in a series of conservative journals of opinion that would build on its success.

In short, Bill Buckley revitalized conservatism, with his wit, his intellect, and his inimitable mannerisms that made him a TV icon as a guest on many programs, even before he created his own long-running program, "Firing Line."

Some people like to believe that objective forces shape history but the right person in the right place at the right time can change everything. William F. Buckley was that person when he burst on the scene at the nadir of conservative thought in the 1950s.

There were of course conservative journalists before Buckley, including irrepressible black conservative journalist George Schuyler who was writing decades before Bill Buckley.

In a similar vein, there were ballplayers who hit home runs before Babe Ruth, but not nearly as many home runs. William F. Buckley revolutionized the conservative intellectual scene as much as Babe Ruth revolutionized the way baseball was played.

Today we take it for granted that there are conservative journals of opinions like The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, City Journal and of course the National Review.

We also take for granted that there are dozens of conservative talk radio programs, led by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, as well as conservative columnists like Charles Krauthammer, George Will and many others.

But these things didn't just happen. Somebody had to lead the way and that somebody was William F. Buckley. The difference today is more than quantitative. The way the liberal media operate is very different, now that there is a conservative media -- not as large, but large enough to puncture the liberals' pretensions and expose what they conceal.

There was a time when Walter Cronkite's version of what was happening in Vietnam was enough to force a change in policy more disastrous than the Communist offensive which Cronkite depicted as a big loss to American military forces, when in fact the American military inflicted a crushing defeat on the Communist guerrillas.

Imagine how differently that war might have turned out -- how many millions of people in Southeast Asia might not have been slaughtered by Communist governments there -- if there had been a sizable contingent of conservative journalists to tell a very different story from that told by Walter Cronkite and the liberal media.

By the same token, think how successful Cronkite's successor, Dan Rather, might have been with his fake documents about President Bush's National Guard service, broadcast on the eve of the 2004 elections, if the fraud had not been exposed immediately by conservatives on the Internet, on talk radio, and in newspapers.

In addition to his own personal contributions to the intellectual diversity of American life, William F. Buckley's pioneering opened the way for many others to add greatly to our intellectual diversity, the only kind of "diversity" that liberals seem to dislike, especially on our college campuses.

Great Exposition!
Once again, Dr. Sowell hits the nail on the head!

Conservatism
Buckley->Goldwater->Reagan->the rest of us.

In Donne's immortal words
"Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."

In Buckley's case, it tolls for a nation. In a time when statesmen no longer exist, having been replaced by self consumed, greedy little men, he was truly a giant who reminded us of another era when honor, self discipline and hard work were the measure of a man.

Thanks for the tribute, Dr. Sowell.

Thought Inspiring
Whether watching Firing Line or reading his column, I felt more at ease if I had an encyclopedia near. He had a way to laser into the heart of a topic so you enjoyed the trip.

WFB
Mr. Sowell, "I'm glad I met you." (From the Old Aetna Commercial) I first heard your name when Walter Williams was subbing for Rush. I looked into your history, read your works and now I am a great admirer of you and Mr. Williams.

WFB was a great man. Thanks to you folks who are continuing to carry the standard.

God Bless America and George Bush.

Nice
Nice tribute. It is hard to believe that we now live in a world without WFB. I don't think a many ever lived who was so devoid of hate. He could cut an opponent up in a debate but never made it personel. Good bless Bill Buckely.

Thanks Dr. Sowell
I never will forget the first time I heard William F. Buckley - his ability to "cut" to the core not only showed his brilliance but his problem solving ability. Liberals do "NOT" know how to solve problems only add to them. Problem solving requires thinking almost devoid of feelings and prejudice based on reason and analysis. Solutions are based on reality not figments of ones imagination. We are truly blessed to have had Mr. Buckley in our midst.

Thanks Mr. Buckley......
I was a young college student on a scholarship in 1969-1973 on a campus in Connecticut. The one dimensional nature of the discussions on campus tolerated all viewpoints except a conservative one. I at the time was far from a conservative but I was beginning to question some of the hatred for all things conservative. William F.Buckley became a beacon to me. I wasn't sure why I was drawn to him, but he seemed to make sense. I was particularly confused when my huber-liberal professors were aghast when I brought up his name in classroom discussions. I guess part of it was that he seemed to be talking about the real world and my professors were planning a social revolution that seemed unlikely at best. Now many years later as the Nixon tapes come public I realize that maybe the professors had more of a point than I had realized over the last thirty five years, but I have moved my own opinions more and more toward the freedom of thought that Mr Buckley represented. Thank God for some balance in our discussions. Mr.Sowell, I want to thank you for your tribute to a great American, and for your tremendous body of work. Richard Fontaine

Dr. Sowell
I love the way you use poetic bluntness to get to the point.

Thank You!

BTW people need to recognize that you too are a pioneer!

IMHO, this would be much better written:

An accurate overview of history
Once again, Dr. Sowell hits the nail on the head. And I'm certain Mr. Buckley feels honored.

William F. Buckley, rest in peace...

WFB, JR., Founder
WFB, JR., was the founder of our conservative voice in America that prevented Democrats from turning the United States into a Socialist country.

"Tho the great one be gone, his words and thoughts will always stand alone" -WFB,JR.- RIP.

"Whatever evolves was first, created" - Jason Leverette, Patriot

A fitting tribute.
A fitting tribute.

Though saddened by his death, it has brought me an opportunity to see much more of his work on television.

Becuase of my age, I never got to see much "Firing Line".

Seeing it now makes me realize what a poor substitute the O'Reilly's and Limbaughs of todays media landscape are for the calm, cogent, and polished demeanor of Mr. Buckley. Lou Dobbs makes the attempt, and good for him.

The rest of our television representatives seem to take the angry, passionate, and frankly, simplistic appeal to emotion...

Much like we need another Barry Goldwater, we need another William F. Buckley.

Thank you Dr. Sowell
The conservative movement is growing stronger daily!

My father
introduced me to Firing Line when I was growing up. He too, like Mr. Buckley, realized that hatred never accomplishes anything, it only destroys.

Me. Buckley's non-personal, eloquent, manner of addressing issues was a wonder to watch and learn. We all could re-visit the lessons and grow.

Buckley and Rand
William F Buckley was a great man, although he should have accorded a little more respect to Ayn Rand.

Bill B
was just what the Dr ordered at the time.

In fact, we need another Bill Buckley right now.

I am so tired of the hate from both sides.

Bill could lay a sentence or two on his opponent with his raper-like mind, and they might say, "Ha! You missed!"
And he would retort, "If you think so, shake your head".

Never anything personal, never anything hateful. Never.

And.......he enjoyed life...... as it was meant to be.

Thanks Mr Buckley.
And thank you Professor.

Great column, but...
Walter Cronkite NEVER depicted or claimed that the Tet offensive was a big "loss" for the American military. Rather, he stated his shock that such an offensive could take place after months/year of being told that the Army of North Viet Nam as well as VIet Cong were being eviscerated. Putting together such a well-coordinated effort put the lie to that myth, even if, as is no doubt true, the American military, after a couple of months work, handily won the battle.

Mr. Sowell 's Punch Drunk Love,
While perusing this passage of Mr. Sowell's:

"By the same token, think how successful Cronkite's successor, Dan Rather, might have been with his fake documents about President Bush's National Guard service, broadcast on the eve of the 2004 elections, if the fraud had not been exposed immediately by conservatives on the Internet, on talk radio, and in newspapers."

one can't help but draw near to Mr. Sowell's passionate "philosophy":

"Such a dysfunctional white culture derives from the ‘Cracker culture’ of certain regions in Britain, mainly the harsh English borderlands, origin of many 'cracker' migrants. Sowell gives a number of examples that he regards as supporting the lineage, e.g. an aversion to work, proneness to violence, neglect of education, sexual promiscuity, improvidence, drunkenness, lack of entrepreneurship,… and a style of religious oratory marked by strident rhetoric, unbridled emotions, and flamboyant imagery."

Methinks Mr. Sowell needs to walk away from his punch bowl.

The Conservative Vacuum
The liberals themselves have themselves to thank for the William F. Buckleys and Rush Limbaughs of the world. It would've been ingenious of them to put forth a conservative on a national news broadcast to control him. If they had done this, I dare say, there would've been less of a call for an alternative to the national news broadcasts. They may have been able to control this person more than they could control Buckley or Limbaugh, and there wouldn't have been a vaccum for Buckley or Limbaugh to fill. For this to be the case, though, the national news broadcasters would have to have recognized that their broadcasts had a slant.

WFB, Jr.
My own most delightful memory of William F. Buckley Jr. happened on "Firing Line".
I do not recall the topic, nor the guest.
In the conversation, Buckley corrected the grammar of his guest, with the
usual fey gleam in his eye, and the elan and erudition so characteristic of him.
The guest took it with aplomb, and the conversation continued in good spirits.

It was clearly a message that what we argue about is immaterial.
How we say it is what matters in the long run.

Now in the age of political correctness, and touchy-feely, that would not happen.

I thought it significant at the time, and often thought about it over the years.
The topic faded into nothingness, but the style endured.
Now his last column is about English usage.

Bill, your admonition that "Despair is a mortal sin." is a timeless adage.
