Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Even before Mitt Romney bowed out -- with class, by the way -- supporters of John McCain, and Republican party pooh-bahs in general, were chastising those conservatives in the media who had criticized Senator McCain.

Those who leveled their attacks at Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and other conservatives who had criticized McCain's record completely misconceived the role of the media.

Journalists do not exist to get one party's candidates elected or otherwise serve one party's political interests. The public are the journalists' clientele.

It is the public that reads newspapers and magazines, that listens to radio or watches television. They are depending on journalists to tell them the truth as they see it and to offer their honest opinion as to what it means. Journalists cannot serve two masters. To the extent that they take on the task of suppressing information or biting their tongue for the sake of some political agenda, they are betraying the trust of the public and corrupting their own profession.

It is bad enough that politicians betray their followers as a matter of expediency. It is real chutzpah when they demand that journalists betray the public trust as a matter of principle, for the benefit of politicians.

Some journalists -- too many, in fact -- do jump on the bandwagon of particular candidates or particular political agendas, and end up filtering and spinning the news as a result.

Those who are on the "global warming" bandwagon, for example, endlessly repeat that the polar ice cap in the arctic is shrinking -- while filtering out the fact that the polar ice cap in the antarctic is growing.

Some people in the media who went ballistic because President Bush fired a dozen U.S. attorneys had nothing to say when President Bill Clinton fired every U.S. attorney in the country.

Whether one is for or against the "global warming" crusade or for or against Democrats or Republicans in the White House, the truth is the truth -- and filtering out facts is betraying the public that has turned to the media for information.

It is legitimate to argue for or against those who believe that global warming justifies one policy or another. That is an honest expression of opinion. But filtering the facts is not.

Some in the media seem to think that a noble cause justifies withholding facts on the other side.

There has probably never been a more noble cause than wanting to spare the world the agonies and devastation of a world war with modern weapons. That is what The Times of London tried to do back in the 1930s.

The carnage of the First World War was a shock from which a whole generation never recovered. Millions of soldiers on both sides were killed. A whole continent was devastated and millions of civilians were starving amid the ruins. Surely it was a humane and noble desire to want to avoid a repetition of that.

So when Geoffrey Dawson, editor of The Times of London, decided to filter the news, in the interest of peace, that was understandable.

Rather than print news that could rekindle animosities among nations that had fought in the First World War, Dawson filtered dispatches from his own foreign correspondents in Germany to remove negative reports of what the Nazis were doing.

Some of The Times' correspondents complained at the deletions and rewriting of what they had written, and some resigned in protest. They apparently understood that their role was to report the facts as they saw them, not cater to some hope or agenda.

We now know in retrospect that The Times' use of its great influence to promote the interests of peace had the opposite effect.

It downplayed the dangers of Hitler, thus contributing to Britain's belated awakening to those dangers, and its vacillating responses -- factors which emboldened Hitler to launch the Second World War.

It was not just that Dawson guessed wrong. More fundamentally, he misunderstood a journalist's role and the betrayal involved when he went beyond that role, even for a noble cause.

but hannity & rush aren't "journalists"
I wish they'd read this article and do as suggested, even if they aren't journalists.

Dawson & Times of London scenario played out again in Iraq with CNN staying quiet about Saddam, too.
Except the CNN motives were entirely self-serving. (?I think it was CNN. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.)

Arbiters
It's even more serious than Mr. Sowell reports. The media have appointed themselves the public's moral arbiters, deciding for all who and what are right or wrong, who has done or is good or evil, and most generally, the moral character of events.

The media are usually accused of being mere advocates. But since they control the flow of facts in any given presentation of facts and exclude facts contrary to their prejudices, the media's product is in effect a kangaroo court depiction of the world.

Now more than ever, we must take care to think for ourselves, apply the principles we cherish to interpreting controversies of a moral nature, and vet all media provided information we consume for faulty assumption, half-facts and half-truths, and agenda-driven spin.

Message to the Media

Dr. Sowell; an excellent summary of the US media problem. Their audience is without the full facts on which to make up their own mind!

I live in the middle east and regrettably find that news reporting on the Al Jazera channel is more factually based than US reporting on the same stories from the region, (admittedly the Al Jazera news is slanted to a particular region and audience, but thats their job. The facts presented on local stories are less contaminated with indirect pundit opinions).

The US media sells personalities or follows polls to improve ratings and the resulting news reports suffer credible fact reporting.

Unfortunately over the past two years it appears Al Jazera began transition to a more market oriented news product. If this continues they will reach the same low standards currently maintained by the US media.

Want reality! Get a timer and log the number of broadcast seconds news fact presentation are made vs opinion presentation on network news; then look at news reporting vs advertising seconds, (especially advertising for themselves), (not sports, world news). Its like selling soap. I watch the CNN news headlines for the first few seconds at the top of the hour for headlines and then go back to TCM and the internet.

Inadequate Reporter Training

An opinion.

It seems US news reporting for easily understood local issues is often factually based.

Add in difficult legal, technical, or international policy issues and the reporting becomes one sided and advocate based.

Global Warming and local environmental and land use permitting issues are the most apparent reporting issues bearing this burden.

Dr. Sowell found the proper words to describe this phenomenon for Global Warming. Factual reporting must be separated from political positions. The science of GW requires more effort and time.

The Media
Yes, the press likes to tell us how we should think and how we should vote. I have been screaming a lot lately about Fox and their pushing of McLame, but at least they primarily leave that to their pundits. They do, however, do like the other MSM News outlets and show bias by which stories they select to cover and who, in the way of candidates, gets the most air time.

Utterly Misconceived Argument
Thomas Sowell's argument is utterly misconceived as a matter of journalism. Sowell is wrong in his premise: he says that the role of "journalists" is to report the news and give their honest opinion. WRONG. The statement reflects one of the chief problems in journalism today, that the old line drawn between fact reporting and editorializing is gone.

If we mean "journalists," those who have a mission to report the factual news, then it is correct that no one person in politics is a client; reporting truthfully the developments of the day is all. But Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and the like are not journalists in that sense at all. They are commentators, people seeking to shape opinion; and they are specifically people whose aim is to influence Republican Party politics. Asking them to support the presumptive Republican Party nominee, given their role in Republican Party politics, is something any nominee, whether John McCain or anyone else, should be expected to do.

It is Thomas Sowell who suffers from the misconception about journalism. He needs to go back to economics as the subject of his columns.

Remember
During the start of the war in Afganistan major media news anchors were told to remove the American Flag pins they were wearing on their lapels because the editors and directors didn't want to appear to be on one specific side. They wanted to give the appearance that they were being independent and non-biased. Anybody who followed the news knows how independent and unbiased they really were.

Phil Byler...
...what world do you live in??? Rush,Sean,et al,constantly call themselves "commentaters",not "journalists".That was the point of Dr Sowell's article, which you apparently missed,as usual.

Bias is unavoidable
--
I have no particular desire to defend journalists, but no one reporting anything (not in the "old guard" media, not online, not even in peer-reviewed scholarly journals) can do so without some sort of predisposition to a particular point of view.

It is up to the editors of the publication (and, ultimately, up to the readers of every item uttered) to take such prejudices into consideration and develop a balanced picture.

It is when the editors - not the reporters in the field - begin to "slant" the way the information is presented in their pages or broadcasts that the situation gets invidious.

Dr. Sowell doesn't make explicit mention of the impact such "slanting" is having in this election cycle, but the mainstream media (MSM) have demonstrated obvious prejudice in the reporting of the campaigns of candidates they dislike and whom they view as threatening their favorites.

One example is the way Mitt Romney has been treated. Another - far more egregious - is the way the MSM is still treating the campaigns of Dr. Ron Paul.

In the latter case, the overt hostility of entities such as Fox News is amazing. They seem to be taking tips from the editorial policies of *Völkischer Beobachter*.

Journalists in the field should not be expected to maintain full balance and absolute objectivity. They work "in the heat," and cannot do their job without sympathies and antipathies.

Their editors, however, must justify their existence through the exercise of professional coolness, candor, and honesty.

To the extent that they fail in this duty, they most certainly deserve our contempt and dismissal.

--

Thank you Mr Sowell

Another great read. I guess the question that comes to mind is, "Now what? What are conservatives to do? Should we fill the gap?

I figured out their game
years before I Rush and Sean came along.

The slanted "reporting" in the 70's and 80's finally brought me back to my natural ideology - conservative first, republican second, but never liberal or dhimmicrat. The person who really tore it for me was Tip O'Neal, who could fabricate a new lie about Reagan every single day, and the MSM would report it as gospel.

These jokers continue to be exposed for the hacks and shills they are, losing audience and circulation and money by the handfuls, yet race merrily down their deadend dirt road, with bald tires and an empty gas tank.

I was taught from a young age that if you find yourself in a hole, the smartest and first thing to do is to STOP DIGGING!

The networks, NYT, and LAT went out and rented backhoes, BIG ones.

Phil

As I walked through CPAC I noticed who was selling what. What I believe Dr Sowell is trying to point out is that by filtering out facts leads to false conclusions and by doing so makes all journalism suspect. The less reliable, the more often proved false the smaller the readership and the poor and courser the discourse in society.

It is a shame and every journalised should think whether they need to apply to the QVC channel or transision into marketing or politics entirely.

The Media & Politics
Yes Doc Sowell again you keep shining the light in this dark tunnel so we may find our way. However, we get what we pay for, the media as it turns out, is, as is said in ebonics, "big bidness" the product is the news both factual and slanted. Who can forget our buddies at the New York Times, with the Post kicking their proverbial butts on a regular basis, they decide to report confidential news, have we forgotten the "SWIFT PROGRAM" debacle already, that's the other part of the equation, we have short selective memories, so if you get your news with a little facts here, a tad of slant there, they've done there jobs and get to make a little money in the process-have you seen the prices on the new Ferrari Fiorano? and the waiting list.

Jounalistic lying
Another perfect example of this media misrepresentation was that provided by New York Times correspondent Walter Duranty who, in his dispatches from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s, totally whitewashed the brutality of Stalin's program of agricultural collectivization and his various campaigns of political slaughter.

There's no question he knew the facts since he was allowed access to the countryside few other foreign journalists were permitted at the time. Consequently, since they would not play the game of collaboration with the communists, their more accurate reports were questioned and cost them access and earned for Duranty their eternal contempt.

This led to a generally inaccurate US public perception of the Soviet Union which allowed FDR to sell more easily his socialist program, the ill affects of which we still suffer today.

For his Russian portrait of lies, he earned the Pulitzer and the gushing gratitude of the nation's Marxists.

cogent as usual from Dr. Sowell
" Some in the media seem to think that a noble cause justifies withholding facts on the other side."

Keep on speaking out Rush and Sean-- freedom and responsible government loves the iconoclast.
Amnesty John would have us believe (now that he NEEDS us) that he is a "consistent conservative," yet since 2000 he has veered ever leftward, such that only a few RINOS and the 'Crats were left of him on Senate votes per National Journal:

http://nationaljournal.com/voteratings/sen/lib.htm

How to explain Kennedy-McAmnesty? And McVain-Feingold? The Gang of 14? Opposing and stalling court appointments including Justice Alito for being "too conservative" because they did not believe in legislating from the bench as the LEFT would have them do? Calling opponents of scamnesty racist and xenophobic for wanting EXISTING laws of the land enforced and socio-economic responsibility?

You can try to put lipstick on the pig, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
Juan McAmnesty is consistent all right-- and he has been too consistently errant... wandering off the reservation of reason as he too often takes a short walk across the aisle-- where he belongs!

Actually, my service in Viet Nam
is where my skeptical and cynical eye towards journalism was germinated.

Imagine watching your buddies being blown away, yet the count of their bodies wasn't worth noting, but the count of the enemies' was. Or every success on the battlefield described as a loss.

Dr. Sowell - intelligent and reasoned as always. 5 stars.

Phil Byler
. . . got it wrong. Sowell's point was that some journalists do not relate ALL the facts, only those facts which support an agenda. Hence, we get one-sided reports of global warming or outright fabrication, as in "the polar bears are drowning".

Rush, Hannity, et al, have always presented themselves a commentators, not journalists. The fact that some on the left are trying to stifle commentators, especially those on the right-wing, should really scare you.

Rufus
First off, you’re not going to make any friends here by quoting “Jobn” Stewart. Second, Romney was being deadly accurate in saying that a vote for a Democrap is a vote to surrender to terrorism. Third – same to you, pardner.

MlDoggg and Rufus
It was I who tagged your comments offensive, MDoggg because of your racist name-calling of Doctor Sowell "boy" and Rufus because of your profanity.

Just thought you would like to know.

Not that you are going to come back to this thread again.

ives
How would we know the truth of what goes on over there? Our media ONLY gives us the bad news! According to them all Marines are salivating baby killers.WWe have to search to find the truth. Yeah we know some from reports of guys comin back , but is that enough? The whole problem with the M.S.M. in this country is , they are dividing us!Why should i have to pick a side all the time? I think thats why people love Obama right now (especially)the young. They want leadership. Unfortunately all he offers, as far as i can see ,is socialism. But in his speaches he does sound great!I fear we are being controlled, through power hungry polititions, and their backers in the media.

Demise of Rush Limbaugh
So would you say that Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are journalists? Would you say that Shawn Hannity is a journalist. These folks serve themselves - not the public. Their dog has had their day....
http://thefiresidepost.com/2008/01/31/ohg-rea-tone-on-demis e-of-rush-limbaugh/

Objective Reporting
Objectivity in news reporting is almost impossible by anyone unless one simply reads facts like 1+1 = 2. Personal orientation and perspective influence us greatly. Eyewitnesses report to Police that the car was red-blue-green etc. In some areas, weather reports using our best technology are more often wrong than right. Philosophies and speculation are often taught as science and fact. If we all sat in a circle and viewed a "Coke can" we would be seeing the same thing but each would have a different view and set of data. Humans are beset by hidden agendas in everything we do. "Listen - watch - verify"

On a more substantive note
(G)rubby cites one excellent example of bald-faced lies told by the leftist media in this country. I wish it was the only one that could be cited, but, alas, it has always been so since the leftists turned the Fourth Estate into a Fifth Column.

How about Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs? To this day, the left and its toadies in the MSM wax histrionic of how they were innocent of crime, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence of their shameless and dangerous guilt. Further, let us not forget how the "Most Trusted Man in America" brazenly lied about the Tet Offensive, reaching the absolutely false conclusion that Viet Nam was lost. Do any of you ever wonder why none of the MSM ever does any retrospective reporting or show footage of 9/11, even on the anniversary? I don't wonder. Just this week Nancy Pelosi pronounced Iraq "lost," and the MSM chirps in behind her.

It is disgusting. It is maddening. And it is just plain dangerous. Sorry, Phil Byler, the duty of the journalist is to tell the truth. Commentators may spin it any way they wish, but that should come after objective reporting of the truth.

Sins of Omission
As Bernie Goldberg said on the O'Reilly Factor, the line between news and opinion hasn't been blurred, it has been obliterated. As a result, there are a lot of sins of omission out there that are shaping public opinion.

The people of North Carolina, polled before their primary, said they thought John McCain was best on illegal immigration. What? How could they possibly think the author of the reviled McCain-Kennedy bill was the best Republican candidate on illegal immigration? Is it because the TV media only talks about the fence (border security) and not the Z visas or the cost of illegal immigration? Where is the TV news media on the Keating 5 scandal or Juan Hernandez as part of McCain's posse? When marriage infidelity was bandied about with Bill Clinton during the primaries, ever hear a peep about John McCain and the scenario of his second marriage? How come John Kerry's rich wife was a source of derision on opinion news shows but John McCain's rich 17 years younger wife who stole drugs is never mentioned? Speaking of drugs, why is it the Clinton campaign had to be the ones to bring up Obama and drugs? Why didn't the TV news media bring it to people's attention first?

I was asked to particpate in a TV News poll two months ago that asked me who was my most trusted news source? They had opinion jockeys, anchors and comedians all mixed in the multiple choice responses --- None of the above is the right answer, in my opinion.

Ohg Rea Tone
I do believe that, if you would read, or have someone read to you, the prior comments on this thread, you would learn that no one, including Doctor Sowell, considers Miss Coulter or Messrs. Limbaugh and Hannity to be "journalists." They are "commentators."

Shrinque
Did you also flag "Right makes right" because of profanity? Of course you didn't. You have about as much principles as Mitt Romney pr Sowell. And about as much "class"

But then you obviously do believe that Faux News is "news".

Who Still Depends on the News?
Does anyone still depend on the news media for their news? There are so many primary sources available online now. You can read or watch the white house press briefings, the congressional record, candidate blogs, FEMA news releases and photos, weather, sports results, polls, DOD speeches and briefings, Supreme Court decisions, and much more. American media just drops the ball too much. I find I often get better information from Al Jazeera, because they don't filter as much. I only watch the news for aggregation, summary, and commentary. I often feel like I know secret information, because so much from the primary sources is never reported in the media.

It is clear certain msm and
some radio hosts were completely annoyed that all radio and conservatives had not jumped on the McCain bandwagon. To deny that is to deny truth.

Now, if we don't immediately support the republican insiders' presumed candidate, we are practically branded fools and traitors to our country, sadly, from some media personalities I really respect.

Thanks Dr. Sowell for your illuminating opinion.

Yes, MlDoggg, federal DA's
are routinely "asked" to resign when a new administration comes to town. However, the sacking of the entire force ON 8 HOURS NOTICE was unprecedented, reckless, and irresponsible- unless the intent was to shut down or irreversibly damage any of hundreds of active investigations. Especially any aimed at the Clintons or their cronies.

Thank you....
....for another fabulous column!!

I for one, am grateful for our variety in news and opinion, Blitzer, Limbaugh, Dobbs, O'Reilly, and even Rivera. Having lived in Germany for a time, where we only had German TV available, gave me an appreciation for even those with whom I don't agree. There is only ONE news service for television, run on all channels. There was only one point of view. Even the newspapers ran the same stories.

We have choices in our country, at least for the time being.

Thomas Sowell = hypocrit
MlDoggg go it right when he exposed Sowell's hypocrisy about not telling the whole truth about Clinton vs Bush in hiring/firing of US attorneys.

But, Sowell also was not telling the whole truth when he said "Those who are on the "global warming" bandwagon, for example, endlessly repeat that the polar ice cap in the arctic is shrinking -- while filtering out the fact that the polar ice cap in the antarctic is growing."

There is no filtering of the fact that the ice caps in Antarctic are growing, it's a well known fact. Google it and you'll see the fact on every global warming website. The reason the Antarctic ice caps are growing is because of global warming. It used to be too cold for the air to hold any moisture. But now that it has begun to warm, it now snows.

Shameful, Thomas Sowell. I repeat Phil Byler's plea that you return to economics.

it was MSM...
who 'coronated' McCain. They branded Romney as a 'flip-flopper' without ever mentioning all the flips of McCain. It's disgusting that too many 'conservatives' are too lazy to listen/read anything but the garbage the MSM feeds them. Had it been otherwise, Romney would be our candidate...at least.

So...folks, we now have The NYTimes, the LATimes et al, handing us our GOP candidate. But as Rush says...(and it's beginning to happen)..soon they will change their tune and demolish McCain. WHEN OH WHEN do 'our' people wake up? It's a nightmare that never seems to end.

Talk Radio Hosts are not Journalists
I agree that there are biases in the media - the liberal and moderate conservative media. But conservative talk radio hosts are not journalists; their job is to attract listeners not report the news of the day. They are entitled to their opinions so long as they do not display bigotry, racism or intolerance - which Sean, Rush, etc, etc do not. They are truthful, passionate and true conservatives and that is why they refuse to compromise for a candidate who does not portray or represent the true conservative voice. If the moderate conservative media reporting had been more accurate Romney would still be in the race today. Instead they kept shoving McCain down our throats so the true conservatives needed to speak up load and clear so the rest of us could hear it.

More Brilliance From Dr Sowell
How dare Phil Byler tell Thomas Sowell to go back and do anything! Phil is a McCain hack. Maybe he's unpaid but he is getting his talking points from McCain's campaign. Sorry, Phil. I'm going to hold my nose and vote for Obama.

Well said... agree entirely. The public collectively is SOOOO shallow and gullible! A HUGE majority is righteously indignant about ILLEGAL aliens, yet many primary voters imagined that Amnesty John's tough talk about protecting the nation/national security meant he would be well suited to stanch the ILLEGAL invasion! Hell, like Presidente Jorge, he made a Faustian deal for Hispanic votes (the welfare of the nation be dammed!).

My gawd, the greatest threat of future terrorists impacting us here is precisely what gave us 9/11-- allowing people inimical to our socio-economic interests to be here ILLEGALLY. Part of that mistake had been giving them drivers' licenses which they used as I.D. to board planes, take flying lessons, etc. the left wants to legitimize them ASAP and let them vote because they correctly deduce that 95% will ineluctably vote for big entitlement govt., whereupon we will morph into a third world barrio as they bring in their myriad fellow indigent, ignorant relatives.

ml anklebiter lies again
"Clinton - like numerous presidents before him cleaned house AT THE BEGINNING of his term - Bush did it in the middle - as a blatant (and unprecedented) political move to squash ongoing investigations or replace those not hungry enough for his partisan ploys."

Bush allowed numerous US Attorneys appointed by Clinton to keep their jobs as part of his effort to reach across the aisle and change the tone of bitterness in DC brought on by the Clinton years.

The 8 US Attorneys in question were not fired. They were simply told they would not be re-appointed when their terms expired. One of them had in fact told the administration that he would resign at the end of his current appointment and they would have to replace him.

The reason the other seven were not having their appointments renewed was because they failed or refused to prosecute vote fraud, not because Bush was trying to stymie investigations. This last point is really irrelevant anyway since US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President and he can fire any number of them he wants, any time he wants, for any reason he wants, or for no reason if he wants.

Your totally unsuubstantiated allegation that Bush fired these guys to stymie investigations is an even worse offense than telling only one side of the story. It is an outright lie. We know there was nothing nefarious going on because the Democrats in Congress once more abused their oversight function to issue subpoenaes and give the Justice Department an anal exam over this. They found ... nothing.

You are a self-loathing bigot. Why else would you use a racial epithet ("boy") against one of your own? And your lies about Bush's motives in holding dozens of Clinton appointees over and then discharging a handful of them are just one more example of how the left, who put up a facade of wanting to unify the country, have spit on every gesture Bush has made to do just that.

Re: Journalism 101
"They are commentators, people seeking to shape opinion; and they are specifically people whose aim is to influence Republican Party politics. Asking them to support the presumptive Republican Party nominee, given their role in Republican Party politics, is something any nominee, whether John McCain or anyone else, should be expected to do."

You are the who has a misconception of how journalism works. First, journalists are divided into two branches "news" and "editorial" (opinion). The newswriter should never provide opinion (although they often do) merely the facts (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How), while the editorialist may use news (facts) to support their opinion.

Like the talk radio hosts mentioned, Thomas Sowell is a journalist of the editorial variety as he provides his readers his opinion on things backed up generally with solid facts.

In the case of "Talk Radio", they fit into the "editorial" side of journalism. The Radio talker you mentions are not "owned" by the GOP so these "journalists" have obligation to carry the Republican Party's water for them. Their loyalty should be to their listeners and to the "truth" as they perceive it. If they truly feel that McCain will be a disaster for our country, it is their obligation to the public to raise their objection to his nomination and election. While candidates may request these opinion journalist to support them, their obligation is not to the politician or part, but instead to their readers. A simply concept, really!

Mitt Romney
Laura Ingram, Rush and Sean as well as Jerry Doyle were all late to the party. This never ending campaign had been poking along for a year before my favorite talk show hosts endorsed Mitt [and Rush really did not endorse anyone]. I too wish a clone of Mr. Reagan was here, but bless his sole, my favorite past president is resting in peace. When the named late comers finally woke up and saw who is the most conservative and winnable [Duncan Hunter is by far the most] in 2008, John Mac was well on his way. Ask Hewitt who should have won. He introduce me to Mitt Romney. But that is no longer the issue.
The successful candidate needs the votes of independents along with conservative and yes even the Jellos [Rush's name for the undecided] and the part's standard bearer has proven he gets them all.

Too much at stake to keep your ego, Johnny Mac is the candidate now and as Mitt has said get behind him or lose the war on terror including Iraq, see your taxes really increase, have liberal judges sitting on the high court and see our shining city on the hill [America] lose its super power status and on and on. Wake Up

Graduates of journalism school
come out with the idea they are to "make a difference" in the world. Therefore, the desired outcome is more important than the fact.

Michael Crichton believed in global warming until he started his research for his book "State of Fear". He said he was a believer based on everything he had heard about global warming. Once he started to review the data of global warming, he did a complete 180 and concluded the issue was a joke.

Phil Byler, you obviously didn't understand Dr. Sowell's article so I suggest you read it again. Also, I still haven't seen an answer from you to my question regarding the conservatism found in McCain Feingold. You are such an avid supporter of McCain's conservatism that I'm sure you will have no trouble explaining to all of us the conservatism found in this legislation.

Let's see now . From you blinded reality comments your a full blown (Liberal) .
Since you only mention Conservative talking heads who say they are Conservatives . Duh !
But never on ""Your Side Far lefties " as did now DEAD AIR AMERICA or lying fired Dan Rather .
CNN , PBS , NBC , CBS , ABC , PBS , MSNBC , NT Times , Washington Post , LA Times to mention only a few on your said claim they are {Neutral } .
They are about as {Neutral } and unbiased as are Nancy Polosi , Teddy Kennedy , John Kerry , AL Gore and Hillary Clinton .
One suspects since your life is all Liberal based you see your Life as normal as do gay marriage you Liberals constantly shout is normal and natural behavior .
You Liberals called Ronald Reagan a Conservative which is fine but never once has Teddy Kennedy , John Kerry or AL Gore been called ""Liberals " only Demo-crates !
Wrong ! Harry Truman , John Kennedy , Scoop Jackson were real Democrats that would be called Conservatives today by the Media !

Limbaugh and Hannity
The precise quote about Hannity and Limbaugh is: "Those who leveled their attacks at Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and other conservatives who had criticized McCain's record completely misconceived the role of the media."
The "Those who leveled their attacks at..." were the Journalists Dr. Sowell was speaking of. Unfortunately he assumed that people reading his article would know that Hannity and Limbaugh are Commentators, Pundits, NOT "Journalists", nor do either claim to be.
Dr. Sowell was saying that those who attack pundits (from either side) are behaving like pundits, not good journalists.

GW BS
The fact that AGW thoeries are not predictive at all is a joke!

When it gets too cold, it's AGW. When it is too hot, it is AGW. They did not predict it years in advance. They simply have the same tired kneejerk reaction - it is global warming.

There are way too many variables for this to be studied with any confidence. Even the models are horrible predictors. This is not science, it is dogma.

About, offensive speech. The use of these racially derogotory words like "boy" speak volumes about the poster. It actually hurts their argument rather than help it.

Two paragraphs from the letter:
"It is also important to note how detrimental uninformed journalists can be to jeopardize a policy, and the freedom of choice, with fake news. The loose coverage found in tabloid news that entertains the weak mind, while leaving us blind. The truth is everywhere, and information should be about the truth."

"You would not deliberately send a person down a dark alley to their harm, yet we send millions downstream and into unsavory waters, rapids and falls, we may laugh at now, what will in effect devastate the lives of innocents. We are living in a Brave New World of “we know not what,” of uncertainty, corruption, misery and injustice to multitudes we do not even know, for a lack of truth. Without a doubt if the election to the south turns left, our own future will be changed, and freedoms light will become only a flicker without truly excellent and informed Journalism or media coverage."

It is so interesting, when it comes to truth, we all think alike. Nobody wants to be deceived. The ones who do deceive create a virtual fake world of uncertainty that eventually collapses.

The MSM wants a McPresident
They control the ingredients. There is no room for history, knowledge, wisdom, facts, truth and morality......just the illusion of history, knowledge, wisdom, facts, truth and morality. No substance allowed and no convictions. It's like watching a magician's slight of hand only the media uses words and pictures and soft lighting and sweet music and smiles until we're intoxicated. Next November it will be too late, but we'll have four years of wilderness to ponder our mistake.

Enjoy the warming while you can. Russian astronomers (and possibly astrophysisists?) are warning that the sun will be less active over the next 20-40 years than it is now, so it should be getting colder. Unless AGW kicks in to keep us neutral.

You idiot leftists show why you're absolutely impervious to facts. So when ice caps GROW it's global warming? And when ice caps shrink it's also global warming? And when temperatures DROP ... that's global warming, too! When temperatures stay the same ... also global warming! Now we seem to be having an unusually COLD winter ... is that also global warming? We need a new term ... "idiot" no longer adequately describes the endless political interpretation of every fact by you leftists!

Re: What is truth?
"Poor Sowell is getting to OLD for this job - Clinton - like numerous presidents before him cleaned house AT THE BEGINNING of his term - Bush did it in the middle - as a blatant (and unprecedented) political move to squash ongoing investigations or replace those not hungry enough for his partisan ploys. That was the beef - And Thomboy knows it, but he's just another Warpublican liar..."

Unlike MOST Presidents, Clinton fired every single Federal Prosecutor on a single day, including those working Billary's Whitewater mess. No other President before or since has done that. It had always been the practice to only FIRE Federal Prosecutors when their replacement had been hired, and also to allow prosecutors working active cases to complete their work. Clinton ignored this precedent in order to stop the Federal investigation of his involvement in a failed Savings and Loan.

This policy was practice by Reagan, and both Bush Presidents - but not Clinton.

BTW, Federal Prosecutors serve 4 year term, at the pleasure of the President. Those Federal Prosecutors fired by AG Gonzales refused to follow directions to investigate and prosecute election law violations. As with any Federal organization, you either follow your boss' direction or you get fired.

As for other "mid-term" firings, in 1978, Attorney General Griffin B. Bell removed David W. Marston as United States Attorney in Philadelphia, when a Democrat lawmaker who was under scrutiny by Mr. Marston's office had urged President Jimmy Carter to remove the prosecutor.

Obviously you are totally clueless as to how hirings and firings of Federal Prosecutors are normally handled.

I know Thomas Sowell, but who are you to question his column, without presenting source and substance we all can trust.

What is the truth. Truth is self-evident fact. It is the knowledge of things as they are, as the were and as the shall become. This is something that liberals cannot understand, because truth stands on principle, and liberals confuse preference and principle.

To DavidMac re 8:35 AM post
Given your comment, I re-read Sowell's piece. After having done so, I don't think I misread it at all. At the outset, Sowell treats Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the like as "journalists," which I think is a misclassification given the rest of the article's discussion of fact reporting.

I would agree with the proposition that fact reporters should not withhold facts, and we have a problem with a left wing media that does selective and incomplete reporting of facts. But that is a different issue entirely from how one looks at commentatorssuch as Rush and Sean. There was once was a line drawn between fact reporting and opinion giving, and it would improve the media if that old line were observed again.

By the way, I don't say that Rush and Sean call themselves "journalists" in the sense of purporting to do fact reporting; they know they are giving analytical commentayr -- i.e., opinion. I was reacting to Sowell's column that apepars to so treat them.

TC
You beat me to the punch. What a load of crap Syler tried to pass off. "It was too cold for the air to hold moisture"; please, what was all that snow and ice doing there before it got warm. And why doesn't that warming cause a concurrent increase in polar ice up north. Hogwash! I stubbed my toe this morning-global warming! My kid knocked his cereal bowl off the table-quick, buy a Prius, it's global warming again. Hoop-de-doo.

"We need a new term"

They've already done it. Now the term "climate change" is the buzzword. Isn't that rich? Now whatever happens is climate change--notwithstanding that climate change is something that has been naturally occurring for millions.
The climate changes on a daily basis, for gosh sakes, and has been doing so pretty much throughout the Earth's history--and well before humans ever had a chance to have any affect on it.

DavidMac
The truly disturbing thing is that it's not just liberals who are trying to stifle conservative commentators. We now see elites in the Republican party trying to stifle them, too.

Oops, forget that argument. Many of those Republican elites are liberals, too.

To sam re 11:09 AM Post
You appear not to understand the point of journalism that I am making about the distinction, once honored in journalism, between fact reporting and opinion giving. As I just explained to DavidMac, my issue is with the apparent classification in Sowell's column of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity as "journalists" in the sense of being fact reporters. They are commentators, and as I recall from listening to them, they consider themelves as such. My criticism is directed at Sowell for arguing something applicable to fact reporters that does not apply to commentators.

By the way, it is good conservative journalists who try to observe the fact reporting-opinion giving line. As bernie Gldberg has pointed on a number of occasions, one of the failings of the mainstream media today is the failure to observe that fact reporting-opinion giving line. So your disgression about my being other than what I am, a conservative, is off the mark.

He missed me at hello
This article makes little sense to me. Sowell brings up some great examples of the media being unbalanced to support a cause, but then relates it to McCain's criticism of conservative talk radio.

Conservative talk radio is not the fair and balanced media. They can endorse candidates (And do!) and they can give a blatant one sided view of the world. McCain's people are well within thwir rights to critique them.

Sowell brings up the global warming debate saying that the media is focusing only on the Al Gore end of the world side and not the groups in between of which there are many. At the same time there is general consensus in the science community that global warming exists, even though they widely disagree on the impact.

But on talk radio many hosts flat out say global warming does not exist or is caused by natural causes. This is the view of only a small number of scientists, who should get their views out there, but not be treated as the exact equals of other voices.

In other word Sowell is right. All media is biased. But he is wrong by lumping all media together. The New York Times, Post ABC, CNN are jounalists. They should be held up to a high level and should try to show balance.

Rush Limbaugh, MoveOn.org etc. are the left and right wing propaganda media. The only qualification they have is not to commit illegal slander that can land them in jail. Even in this area they barely skirt the line.

McCain and every other candidate should certainly call into question the views of this machine. They are attemping to shape opinion, and that can be challenged.

Independent Thinker
Altough I completely agree with what you said about the left's switch to "Climate Change" from "Global Warming" [to cover all the bases in using this false idea as justification for them getting power over all of us], what I REALLY meant was that the word "idiot" no longer adequately describes leftists! That's the problem with left positions ... they are so flagrantly wrong, the language fails us to adequately describe them. Perhaps "Lidiot" [for LIBERAL IDIOT] would begin to convey the distinction!

Re: Journalism 101
"How to explain Kennedy-McAmnesty? And McVain-Feingold?"

Interesting, McCain-Feingold is all about giving more POWER during the electoral process to the MSM. According to McCain-Feingold, an organization, such as a pro-life group, can be sued for distributing voter's guides showing how a candidate votes on a given issue within 30 days of the election (the most effective time to influence the voter). However, the MSM can print anything it wants to about the candidates and support any candidate it feels meets its World View at anytime. No wonder McCain-Feingold is know as the "Incumbent Security Act". The idiots who wrote the, idiots who passed the bill, the idiot who signed the bill, and the Spreme Court idiots who said it was constitutional obviously clueless as to the meaning of the 1st Amendment Freedom the the press, because it was never limited to only Mainstream Newspapers. In fact, during the Revolution, most of the MSM was owned by Tories, and it was organizations such as the Sons of Liberty publishing "illegal" phamplets that fan the flames of the rebellion against the King.

The fix is in
There is too much power in too few hands. This is a problem with all the corporate media. Most of them want a Clinton vs. McCain (since Giuliani didn't work out) election and are determined to get it.

Little time is given during debates to non-preferred candidates. The media doesn't cover events or news from campaigns of outsider candidates. It's as if they don't exist. You can just hear them thinking: "Duncan Hunter? Tom Tancredo? Ron Paul? Mike Huckabee? How dare they run in OUR presidential race?"

Fox News even left Ron Paul out of the New Hampshire debate in spite of his phenomenal fourth quarter fundraising and better performance in polls and Iowa voting than some of the included candidates.

When it was down to four Republican candidates, most of the Reagan Library debate time went to Romney and McCain, while Huckabee and Paul were virtually ignored? Huckabee called them on this, but to no avail.

Fox News: the "fair and balanced" voice of the RNC.

Sowell hits it out of the park again
Once again Dr. Thomas Sowell hits the ball out of the park. I've grown so tired of hearing the left-wing (so-called mainstream) media spit on talk radio, like those of us who listen, and the hosts, are all raving lunatics or zombies who simply walk in lock-step with the host. A true objective look at talk radio would find there are folks with so many different opinions (even just amongst the hosts),and they get to get on the radio and provide their opinions. Take Michael Medveds' show. He always has (as callers) a majority of folks that disagree with his position. He enjoys the debate. Same with Dennis Prager, Ingraham, Hannity, Boortz, etc. The smear campaign that erupted against talk radio, the minute that it was discovered a majority of them (with Medved and a couple others being the exception), were against McCain, was rediculous. They have every right to analyze McCains (sometimes awful) record, as a Republican candidate for President, and provide their insight and opinion. Medved came out for McCain, even though Medved is about the most conservative of hosts you'll find. It all proves our party is not single-minded, it's not a bunch of zombies walking in lock-step, as the media portrays. We all have different ideas and likes/dislikes, and that was shown in this race. Now, we can all come together and unite around our candidate, as we know there will be a fight with either Billary or Hussein Obama, and the media will be completely in lock-step with the Dems, as will Hollywood, academia etc.

It'll be a tough fight but united we will win the fight for the Republican party.

Go Hillary
I do hope the Dems win in November. Cold day in hell when I vote for McCain. He has spit in my eyes so many times, I can never forget it.

Huckabee maybe
I can vote for Huckabee, even though he may be every bit as liberal as McCain. But with Huckabee, it is not personal. I hate McCain, plain and simple.

"[H]ere's a fact you probably don't know because it hasn't been reported very -- did you know that Bill Clinton, when he came into office in 1993, fired every U.S. attorney except one?" Wallace claimed that "there were no congressional hearings" and that "it wasn't this kind of storm of protest and that ... had not happened before." But while both Clinton and Bush dismissed nearly all U.S. attorneys upon taking office following an administration of the opposite party, The Washington Post reported in a March 14 article that "legal experts and former prosecutors say the firing of a large number of prosecutors in the middle of a term appears to be unprecedented and threatens the independence of prosecutors."

And, oddly enough, all of these sites know that global warming exists. So, to emphasize my point...no one is covering up the fact about the Antarctic ice caps growing... except Thomas Sowell.

Believe what you want about global warming, but Thomas Sowell is plain wrong and hypocritical.

MSM Deception
The Media, Main-Stream & otherwise have exerted an undo influence upon the process this time around and, tainted the entire process. Sadly, We The People, the Voting Public has much more of the same 'style' of elections to look forward to in the future, if this year doesn't start some sort of revolt. Especially if the "Media-Driven Nominee" prevails in a Party Peopled with Voters he holds little in common with.

I'm hoping that if nothing else comes out of this years Election Process the big story will be that more people have been put off by the heavy-handed way the MSM pushed their 'favorite' candidates at one time or another. That more people will demand the Media clean up their act and keep their opinions to themselves IF they have a dog in the fight!

For instance - FoxNews, right out of the box made it clear Rudy was their guy and, nothing any other candidate did, said or deserved to be recognized for, mattered to the gang at the formerly 'Fair & Balanced' cable news giant. Rudy was always the lead story. His "Southern Strategy" was at first praised as "brilliant" by nearly every talking-head analyst and anchor on Fox.

Fred Thompson, who played the same game of not campaigning in Iowa or New Hampshire, relying instead on his own Southern Strategy was never talked about on FoxNews, unless it was in a derogatory manner. Even though Fred's attempt to come out of the gate with a win in the south (his strength) as a game plan made more sense than Rudy trying the same thing.
Then later when it all started to unravel and, it become obvious that Rudy had made a mistake the Fox pundits re-examined the flawed campaign strategy but still refused to call it as it was. Not until Rudy called it quits did Fox even try to be "Balanced" concerning the former NY Mayors failed presidential bid.

The Michigan Option
I have heard the 'Michigan Option' explained just once, but the main thrust of the plan would be to turn the order of states voting into a Lottery System as a way of balancing the influence of early voting states. In theory, every state would have their turn at the front of the line because those who would go first in one year wouldn't be allowed to go first the next year.
A National Primary Day seems at first blush to make less sense because it would put too much power in the hands of the Media and, Big Money Power-brokers.

Any Other Suggestions?

Liberal Media myth
OK, conservatives...

If the media is so liberal and so biased, then why would ONLY conservatives be fighting to allow a single company to own more and more media outlets?

And, don't tell me it's because deep down all conservatives believe in less govt intrusion, because the last Republican Congress and HR 3077 proves that wrong.

The list of "far-right" media pundits is so much longer than a list of the "centrist" liberal pundits.

The problem with the Conservative pundits has nothing to do with the expression of facts, whether it’s from journalists or commentators. The problem is that conservative media personalities took it upon themselves to define conservatism & lie about Republicans who hold positions contrary to the self interest of the pundits. They claim the mantle of Reagan & yet slander McCain for having the same view! For 40 years of Reagan’s life we have a record of speeches & writings where he covered every angle of the immigration debate. His belief was that any human who had the courage to risk it all, regardless of legality, to make a better life is exactly the type of immigrant we need. He believed that the inner character of that type of individual will have the ingenuity, creativity, etc. to provide this country with the human capitol to help the US. Taking charge of ones destiny is the first stage of living a great life. Reagan saw these illegals as personifying this truth. Hunger and drive like that cannot be manufactured. His 1986 amnesty is legal proof, regardless of talk radio spin. Reagan was not duped into signing this believing we would seal the border. He actually pushed for it from 1981. Don’t insult him with claims he regretted signing this or didn’t know better. He was the President, not some naïve figure. He led on this & granted amnesty because he believed that it was right for America morally, philosophically & economically. Hannity, Beck, Rush, etc. hold views that couldn’t be more removed from Reagan on this issue. Slandering McCain has been one out of context lie after lie. When the Colbert Report, with only minor editing, could be spoken by Rush or Hannity without anyone in the audience flinching, well then

Spiceman
That's the best you can do?

And, in fact, I do have the answer... it's because the whole liberal media claim is just a over-hyped myth that allows conservatives to lambaste the media anytime the media says something negative about a conservative.

Thumbs up on another nice article.
To this point, I think Dr. Sowell is the columist I trust the most for intellectual honesty. God help me if he writes something telling me I should vote McCain.

Global warming, how did this become political? Are the conservative pundits on the wrong side of history because they hate Al Gore? If you don’t buy it, so what? Heck, I’d love it if more of the world had a tropical paradise climate for a few centuries but the reality is that we are on the verge of peak oil & as a result supply will not be able to meet demand in the future. The result will be $5-$8 per gallon gas by 2020 & that would be bad for our economy. The vulnerability of being dependant on a product sold to us from people who tolerate terrorism is also a national security issue. Forget ANWAR, 1 year supply tops, all this talk about Alaska is ignorant short term thinking; our government is saving ANWAR for the same reason we have the national strategic reserves; if the Middle East becomes unstable we may need it to hold us over until we can restore stability & production in the Middle East should a problem arise in that part of the world. Any responsible government has to mandate an energy strategy to engineer an desirable SUV that gets 100MPG, etc. The human mind can achieve this as it has achieved so many other previously consider impossibilities. But without a government mandate it’s unlikely to happen as soon as we need it to happen. We need to mandate widespread use of Nuclear power. These are all positions of absolute necessity & yet any Republican who goes there is called a RINO & global warming fool! Why? Because of the misinformation put out by the conservative ratings driven pundits. A real conservative understands that if the US gets out in front of the green industry we will create millions of jobs & sell technology to the entire world. This is the new gold rush on the world stage and because of Rush, Hannity, etc. we conservatives are supposed see politics as never progressing in areas of common interest for all the people simply because they hate Al Gore and mock tree huggers.

"The list of "far-right" media pundits is so much longer than a list of the "centrist" liberal pundits."

True enough ... possibly because people are willing to pay to listen to conservative [not "far-right, you moron] opinion; especially, since they can't get it on the news media which is boringly, relentlessly leftist, stunningly wrong, and traitorous to boot!

"The result will be $5-$8 per gallon gas by 2020 & that would be bad for our economy."

"But without a government mandate it’s unlikely to happen as soon as we need it to happen. We need to mandate widespread use of Nuclear power."

The shortage of oil and the reliance on foreign oil is the result of government mandates. We have a 400 year supply of oil out west.

The $5-$8/gallon gas is not the result of the scarcity of oil as much as it is the rapid decline in the dollar. In terms of foreign currencies and commodities, our dollar is worth half of what it was just a few years ago. If we had a strong dollar policy (which was followed in the 90s) we would still have gas less then $1.50/gallon.

Lately I've noticed...
that the politically biased and self-serving, television news media, have decided there's gold in their use of the ever more popular 'info-skit'. Where highly biased 'experts' opine and argue loudly about some 'leading' story that is made even more colorful for the sensation-jaded segment of the audience through the use of stage direction, hyperbole and the manipulation of character, content, meaning and situation.
With so much of our national political news mangled by such frivolous sources, where can a country boy find meaningful, real and always entertaining knowledge of America's journey?

desert-don't look now but your brain
got scraped off on a cactus. Reagan was fed a line by the dim Congress that amnesty would include enforcing the laws on the books including fines on employers. McCain has played to the media/libs for this precise moment when they could deliver the nomination when he couldn't get nominated dog catcher in the national GOP. To this day he holds ordinary Americans, who want their taxes cut, conservative judges and their borders sealed, in contempt. He is a RINO with a capital R. Even Liebermann is a hawk so being pro-war ain't saying much. There is not one lie about this guy. He has given away the store to dims and he can't be trusted.

Right, desert,
We can just turn on that Anwar spigot anytime we get ready. What a bunch of crap! Our economy is now at the whim of 1 billion Chinese who also, with the Indians, will do more to ecology and climate than 10 Americas. Why don't you stop drinking the koolaid? I don't agree with Rush 100% but the man made warming nonsense is just that.

Moonkeeper
I believe you are sincere but I'm reminded of Glenn Beck who should be writing fiction novels. The oil companies have future contracts for & hedged supplies well into the future & don’t pay market price for most of their product or take hits due to currency traders. Why do you think they’re setting all time profit records? It’s more then passing along the simple cost; they're using the spot market price as an excuse to jack up pump prices even though their supplies are contracted at lower costs. Actual production price per barrel is $5. All this talk about massive untapped oil fields is political propaganda. The most respected geologists who are A political agree that peak oil is estimated between 2006-2016; from that time forward mankind will never be able to extract as much. And even if we cover the planet & oceans with drilling platforms then what? We need to engineer a permanent green source of energy. To think we can burn this stuff without environmental consequence for 400 years is foolish; the increase in toxins along with the deforestation will lead to epidemics of asthma, bronchitis & lung cancer. If this kind of thinking isn’t purged from the Republican Party they will fall into permanent decline. Regulation is a necessary evil as mans heart is filled with larceny & those in control often put money, power, career, etc. above other considerations. Without adequate regulation you have a 3rd world country; corruption is the result of a lack of regulation. Dismissing its necessity is fools gold. It’s ironic that the free market anarchists fail to see that the only reason our system has remained stable is the regulation they lobby against. Anti regulation types are mirror images of the war protester who fails to see that without our military they wouldn’t have a country to protest in. Left/Right is for political advantage, not truth

With Class?

Yea he left, making whiny snipes at the Dems with BULL crud rhetoric about, "surrendering to the terrorist". WHAT AN IDIOT.

My sons are not in the military because they are severing the nation by helping me

I am a hunter....well varmint hunter (never had a hunting license in his life)

I saved the Salt Lake Olympics. (wow! big deal) I am not impressed with corporate clowns.

Yea I drove 100's of miles with a dog tied to the roof, he liked it.

My dad marched side by side with MLK.......well its a figure of speech

CRY MITT CRY MITT (Mitt broke down several times on the Campaign trail like a little girl. Even Hillary held it together better.)

We will miss his BIG helmet hair head. Good Bye Mitt, you phony flip flopping piece of work. You are everything people hate about politicians. You say Gore flipped flopped? ha ha. You swift boat Kerry? Mitt is a draft dodger.

Journalists?? No
I didn't hear much criticism of journalists. I did hear and participated in the criticism of the pundit class. The Limbaughs, the Coulters, the Ingrahams. These people don't even call themselves journalists with good reason. They simply offer pre-digested opinion and argument for people to repeat at the coffee stand or the gas pump or the bar. They decided that they could in concert decide the nominee of a major party and failed, laughably. Limbaugh fought daily against two men who are, in fact, the last two standing. I don't need Oprah or Limbaugh to tell me how to vote.

Clarification

Based on my post at 7:02am today I realize that I am not clear. I do not think poorly of pundits nor the living they make. I have a tough time when aricles in newspapers are slant this or that way through omission, when they become gratutious magazines for the local political party rather than hard hitting news.

This plays our on a National level too. It is difficult to get the truth easily from government so we should be paying for news to get all of the pertinent facts. I don't even need a conclusion at that point though a perceptive one is appreciated.

But the venue it has the most impact on is through the medium of tv. They become campaign central and should do fec inkind contribution reports as a Party if not a canidadte endorsement.

it's entertainment
I stopped watching the "news" on TV years ago, precisely for the reasons Mr. Sowell points to. The media has sold it's soul. The can't handle the truth. Free press in name only.

Indyconantidim, you prove my point
You’re funny but everything you stated is false. Reagan’s diaries make it clear that he informed Simpson as soon as he was sworn in that he would grant the amnesty. PERIOD, 1981. It took congress 5 yrs. for the courage to do it & Reagan kept his word. But you all want to believe Rush, Hannity, Beck B.S. Once again, Reagan was not some naïve man who didn’t know what he was doing. He was the President… Hello? Anyone home? He could’ve tripled the border patrol, beefed up enforcement, whatever... This left/right blame the Democrat congress thing is retarded. In what world do you live where the most powerful man on the planet couldn’t move forward to seal the border if he really thought it was a big deal? The truth is history but you project your own obsessions led by Hannity!!! Mind Numb Robots on the right. I’ve never voted for a Dem in my life but you all are looking uniformed & you need to turn off talk radio. Medvid is the only guy with any sense of honesty. If the right thinks immigration is a priority then stand on your own; do not use Reagan in vain while slandering McCain. Reagan was a believer in amnesty. McCain is tougher then Reagan was & you all call him a liberal! OK boys & girls here’s your homework; Google “Reagan on immigration” You’ll find nearly 40 years of documented speeches & writings where he thought the entire issue was no big deal & actually admired anyone looking to come here & join us legal or not. Speech after speech in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s are full of statements such as “One piece of un-harvested fruit left to rot on the vine is a greater sin then the poor man who is willing to work for Gods bounty” or something like that. And this was in the days where he wrote his own speeches. But some overweight Ruth Chris steak addict who’s eaten the very bounty of his contempt wants to lie to you about Ronald Reagan & you just accept it. Shameful

I think you misunderstand how trading oil works.

Lets say that I'm selling oil. Those willing to buy it are willing to pay the equivalent of 3 CUs. $1.20 is worth 3CUs. 1.5 Euros is worth 3 CUs. This would mean that we had to pay $1.20 for a gallon of gas. Now lets say the value of a dollar plummets. If Europe still needs just as much oil, and are willing to pay 3CUs, then 1.5 Euros will equal $3. The issue isn't with the currency traders, its with a weak dollar policy that our federal government has practiced in thelast 5 years. If you believe this is an oil-only phenomenon then feel free to look up the price of precious metals and the vast majority of commodities as well. In terms of gold, and in terms of Euros, the price of gas hasn't changed much in the last 5 years or so.

Lets clarify one thing: I am NOT a Republican

For all the doomsday predictions, our life expectancy continues to increase. Regulation in an environmental sense is not necessary as long as there are private property rights.

As for man being naturally "filled with larceny," I would suggest that this reasoning further validates the need for less government. After all, how can such evil beings be expected to be benevolent in their government of others?

"It’s ironic that the free market anarchists fail to see that the only reason our system has remained stable is the regulation they lobby against."

Anarchist? I don't believe in no government. Government exists to protect against physical force, breach of contract, and fraud. It is when government gets involved in central planning that it oversteps its boundaries. Looking around the world, there is a direct coorelation between the wealth of a nation, and how historically free enterprise it has been.

As for the idea that our system is stable due to regulation, I would request that you point out to me any infringement on the prosperity of this nation that wasn't caused by government intervention. Our Great Depression was worse then the rest of the world's due to the New Deal (as late as 1947 our unemployment rate was over 10%). Medical costs sky-rocketed relative to the rest of the world only after medicare, medicaid, government-created HMOs and favorable tax treatment by providing "benefits" instead of higher salaries. And the insurance they buy? Also overpriced due to the artificial lack of competition due to over-regulation of the health insurance industry.

CC agrees! Your post was #1 of the bunch!!

Great column as usual, Dr. Sowell!

Checks and Balances
I understand your reasoning but to legislate nothing is not the answer, the absence of law and order has never worked in history. Life is too dynamic. Regardless of one's opinion of good & evil as real or simple manifestations of the law of the jungle instinct, it is part of the human condition. Every place on this Earth that is without regulation, law or whatever therm we can use is a mess because in addition to the drama inherent in life there is always systematic crushing of the individual without checks & balances. This is not about judgment, it is what it is & regulation is a form of checks & balances. There are people who would sell their mother for a dollar, it happens everyday, spouses killing each other for money, kids killing parents, companies like Enron, etc. Private property rights preserving the environment? The only way that would work is if we were all limited to one piece of property & therefore motivated to do the right thing. Otherwise people or companies would decimate the land & when it was useless just move on to the next. 99% of us may be good but the damage from 1 can reek more havoc then all the good. In the natural world there are no boundaries so the trashing of one mans land can pollute another's. You are mixing up legal theories with natural reality as many libertarians do. Regarding doomsday predictions we can calculate what is being spewed into the atmosphere & how much nature will absorb as we transfer millions of years of organic residue locked in the Earth to to the atmosphere. Burnt coal & oil doesn't disappear! we're literally digging it up. using the stored energy & putting the leftover waste & poisons such as mercury into our atmosphere. Why even debate this when we can develop green sources?

"... to legislate nothing is not the answer, the absence of law and order has never worked in history."

First off, I don't recall anyone advocating complete anarchy. Nevertheless, you are incorrect that it has "never worked."

"Every place on this Earth that is without regulation, [...] is a mess because in addition to the drama inherent in life there is always systematic crushing of the individual without checks & balances."

Therefore we should all give up our liberties and embrace Communism? Come on.

"Private property rights preserving the environment?"

Yes. It works. Property owners are much more concerned with preserving the value of their property, and environmental concerns are necessarily a component in that value.

"Otherwise people or companies would decimate the land & when it was useless just move on to the next."

The only time this has been known to occur is in circumstances where the land is NOT owned privately. When it's "publically owned" that essentially means NO ONE owns it, so it makes economic sense to NOT save for the future.

But when it's YOURS -- then you're saving for YOUR future -- and suddenly it makes economic sense.

"Why even debate this when we can develop green sources?"

That's another advantage to private property. If you want to "go green" with YOUR property, you are free to do so. You don't need anyone's permission. Just go do it.

The Simple Truths
A simple truth that Rush often expresses on his show is that you can tell a lot about someone based on the insults they direct at you. At this time, the media is confounded that Rush will not support McCain. What then does this say about them? Does this say that they have no regard for the principles of a candidate as long as that candidate is of a certain party. Does their surprise that Rush will not back a candidate of his party regardless of the principles of the candidate?

The line: that those who criticize Limbaugh and Hannity "completely misconceive the role of the media" is one of the more powerful statements Dr. Sowell has ever written. When he writes "those" I am not sure if he is speaking exclusively of the media, but the point is made for me. The media has shown that they don't fully understand their role in presidential elections. I would say especially lately, but I'm well aware of the Dickens' line about us all thinking we live in the worst of times. Having said that, the media bias that I see occurring in the news is the worst I've seen in the last five that I've watched.

One of the aspects of private property is that the property owner is allowed to destroy their property if they choose to do so. In order to "move onto the next" they would have to enter into a voluntary transaction with another property owner. Furthermore, any attempt at misrepresenting the damaged property as not damaged would be fraud.

"You are mixing up legal theories with natural reality as many libertarians do."

With this, again, I have to point out that there is a direct relationship between how historically free-enterprise a country is and how wealthy and healthy that nation's populace is.

Last point: While I disagree with you, it is refreshing to be able to debate someone without a side resorting to name-calling.

GREAT ARTICLE, TOM. HALF-TRUTHS, INUENDO, RED HERRINGS, OMISSIONS---THAT'S HOW THE NEWS RUNS THESE DAYS. THE AGENDA IS ABOVE THE TRUTH. IT SEEMS THAT LIBERALS JUST WON'T LET THE FACTS GET IN THE WAY. AND THE MEDIA KNOWS THAT PEOPLE ARE TOO LAZY TO CHECK OUT THE DRIVEL THAT THEY PUT OUT.

"Private Property?"
What private property? We don't even own our own bodies. They belong to the state like everything else. As to Real Property? Taxes, zoning and building regs., property use rights, EPA admonitions and regs., visual, aural and all other violations of some-bodies hyper sensitivity. Smoking regs., weeds, wrong kind or placement of foliage, grass, paint color, RV parking, auto and home maintenance etc, and on and on. Millions of code and law violations that can result in fines, jail and confiscation.
Private property, what private property? We who pretend to own property are as deluded as the fleas that assume ownership of the dog.
To see how bad it can and will get with the coming rise of socialism, read about property rights in the UK.

False choices
According to Dr. Sowell, we are supposed to believe that Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. are conservatives opposing the "liberal" McCain. What a false choice. They're all socialists. Despite all of their rhetoric, who do they support? Mitt Romney, the champion of big-government. As governor he increased taxes, spending and instituted a fascist medical reform (read Hillarycare). In 2002, there was a ballot initiative to abolish the state income tax and he opposed it. He along with Huckabee are in basic agreement on all the major issues. The Conservative establishment would like you to believe there is a difference.

Dr. Sowell has done some good work in the past. But as of late he is just a cheerleader for big-government. He is either lying or is ignorant to the true positions of the so-called conservative talk radio hosts. Either way,he is unqualified to make any comment.

Presidential candidates
All of whom, if elected would be disastrous for ths country - people who read and think do not want more of the corrupt, lying Billary duo; not the dream man with no substance, Obama nor McCain - who is a wolf in sheep's clothing - as big a liar and panderer as Hillary. Thank God there are still people in this country who want the values back, believe in the constituion and are willing to speak out - and there are few. What we conservative believers and that really does include all people who don't want this country to turn into a third world country - is a third party that will give us a choice. Thank God for Rush, Sean, Ann, Laura - at least they have courage.

MSM determining elections
MSM has its favorites lined up to run for Pres. in November, and no matter which of the 3 wins, we're stuck with a liberal "leader" who will sign any amnesty bill that comes up.

If you're in a state that still has a primary election upcoming, and IF you have candidates for House and/or Senate who are conservative, for goodness sake go to the polls and vote for them!

Clinton got his horrible "I worked hard to git you that middle class tax cut I ran on, but it's jes' not possible" retroactive tax increase through when he had both Houses. The 1994 switch helped stopped other onerous laws.

If conservative Repubs can retake some of the lost seats from '06 and hold others, it MIGHT be a means of preventing wholesale socialism.

Bad as McCain is, DON'T STAY HOME!

GREAT Article!
The only thing overlooked was MANUFACTURED NEWS, doctored photos and forged documents.

Some of the Liberal posts bring great mirth. LOL
The general theme is; SAY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR OR SHUDDUP!
Seeing this I understand the Liberal popularity of MSM.
MSM spoon feeds Liberals only what they want to believe.

Politics for Dummies
These days, more than ever, it seems that if someone wants to change the world, but is too incompetent to actually do something productive, he goes into journalism. Journalism, at least in the mainstream media like the increasingly pathetic New York Times, is devolving into a purely opinion-driven mode where the agenda is the be-all and end-all, and mere trifles like truth, objectivity and basic integrity are small obstacles, easily brushed aside. when it comes to politicians and journalists I begin to despair that there isn't a competent, honest person in either field.

Imagine A Change: A new approach
During the Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice's speech at a news conference on Middle East relations, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Benjamin Bernake's speech on the economy, and many other speeches by influential individuals, so called "news analysts" constantly intrude by interrupting their messages. These people continue to dilute and "summarize" speeches into 30-second or less audio clips with their own analysis of government, business and social issues, rather than letting the often most qualified people speak for themselves.

In most cases news articles/reports aren't short summaries, but clips of the message fit the news broadcast's goal. The current form of news, having papers lean liberal or conservative, for this or against that, doesn't serve well at all and is completely unacceptable.

Thomas Sowell's article on the media and politics clearly delineated past problems with filtering, deleting and editing for other than proper journalistic purposes. Many times it's not even what the news networks/papers are biased towards, but what stories they constantly focus on, whether it's some news about a random celebrity or a court case that has a flashy title. We have had that experience before.
