Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It is becoming increasingly and painfully clear that voters in both parties are having a hard time settling on a front runner.

Not only have different people won different primaries thus far, no one won a majority in any primary in either party -- until Hillary Clinton, running virtually unopposed in the Michigan primary, received just over half the votes, while "uncommitted" received 40 percent.

What is wrong with this year's candidates?

The short answer is that most of the Republicans are questionable and all three leading Democrats are dangerous.

The only real conservative candidate is former Senator Fred Thompson but his low vote totals in all the Republican primaries thus far make him a one-man endangered species.

If he doesn't get some serious voter support in South Carolina, it is hard to see how he can become a viable candidate. And, if he drops out, it is hard to see who conservative Republican voters will support -- either in the primaries or in the general election in November.

That raises the very serious possibility -- and the very dangerous possibility -- that Hillary Clinton will become President of the United States if conservative Republicans stay home on election day.

While Barack Obama and John Edwards have been irresponsible demagogues, the Clintons have a record of lawless and ruthless corruption that goes back not only to their White House days in the 1990s but even back to their time in the governors' mansion in Arkansas.

Nor is this simply a matter of domestic politics. It was Bill Clinton who ignored the advice of military and intelligence officials when he gave China the technology that can be used to enable their nuclear missiles to hit American cities.

It was Bill Clinton who gave the North Koreans help on their nuclear program in exchange for promises that have -- predictably -- proved worthless. This was just one of the dangerous problems that he swept under the rug and left for his successor.

People like this are not to be trusted with the highest office in the land in an era when Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons that can easily be turned over to international terrorists.

Conservatives should be the last ones to let the Clintons take control of the White House again, just because they cannot find an alternative candidate who meets all their desires.

It may not be emotionally satisfying to vote for the lesser of two evils but a lot depends on how bad the worse evil is. Nobody running on the Republican ticket is as dangerous as the Clintons.

Some of the objections to former governor Mitt Romney raise a disquieting question as to whether religious differences alone are enough for some voters to pass up a candidate whom they would consider voting for otherwise.

It is one thing to say that particular policies of a candidate go against fundamental moral principles derived from your religion and something very different to be against a candidate whose actual policies are consistent with your principles but who simply attends a different church.

Would someone vote against Rudolph Giuliani because he is a Catholic? John F. Kennedy put that issue to rest nearly half a century ago.

Do we need to wait another half century before a Mormon can be judged on his record? Mitt Romney has a record as governor of Massachusetts and his father had a three-term record as government of Michigan.

Anybody's record can be attacked -- and should be attacked, if you disagree with it. But that is wholly different from being against a candidate because his church differs from your church.

Mike Huckabee's record as governor of Arkansas -- including his wholesale pardons of criminals and his raising of taxes -- should not escape scrutiny because some voters belong to the same church he does.

Nor should he be singled out for attack by voters who go to a different church or to no church.

The stakes are too high to do anything other than select the best person available, even if none of the candidates seems ideal.

Primary Dilemmas
Thomas Sowell makes more sense in a few paragraphs than most writers make in a whole book.

Fred
I just don't get how people can call Fred a conservative. Supposedly he will close the borders, but he is a member of an organization that supports the exact opposite and even wants to kill our national sovereignty to create the North American Union.

I don't think any true conservative would touch CFR with a 10 foot pole. Their policies are treason. Not to mention they are not the least interested in putting it to the people to decide. This agenda has been advanced mostly by stealth. Like Bush's summits with Mexico and Canada the last three years on integration under SPP. They have tried to keep it mostly secret. But program notes have been obtained and vincente Fox doesn't mind telling Larry King all about it.

Fred is lying just like the rest of them.

None has a record to back up their claims. Their records show just the opposite of what they claim. I'd say we are in deep weeds. The lesser of two evils is only BARELY less so these days.

Huckabee Plays Falsely A Poverty Role
Huckabee's poverty role has come to an end. He may as well have been caught using steroids.

Do not kid yourself Huckabee is rolling in the $$$$.

Huckabee - Supported by Big Money
http://e-spirituality.townhall.com/g/fd2a6f46-2cca-475e-bf6 a-d79d8fb9a74c

Federal Reserve, Banks, Oil Companies that make Mitt look like a pauper.

Huckabee's Task:
Going National On a Shoestring …. but the truth is Huckabee - Supported by Big Money.

I have not seen him walk on water yet. Have you?
Who could hide the money trail better than the Federal Reserve?

The peace between Huckabee and McCain is a sign of something, don't you think?

Everyone...
running is more or less connected to the CFR. 'Cept Ron Paul, who, ironically, is the only republican who lives up to the archtype set by "Mr. Repubplican".

Conspiracy freaks abound
Fredheads think Huckabee and McCain are colluding.

But Fred was co-chair for McCain's 200 election bid. Some Huckabee fans think he's secretly McCain's sacrificial attack dog to take Huck out.

Huck is supposedly now richer than Mitt.

Oh, yeah, and every candidate under the sun is bought and paid for by the sinister CFR.

I saw pigs flying over my house tonight.

Get a grip, folks.

Alternate History Episode I
Great column Dr. Sowell, although I will not vote for another RINO simply because Hillary or Obama get the nod from the Lames.

You wonder why it is that good conservative candidates like Fred Thompson can’t seem to gain any traction. The answer should be readily apparent to everyone who will just stop and take a look at the process.

The first State to do anything was Iowa, a State heavy in liberals and religion. Net result; Huckleberry-Lib takes the caucuses.

Next State of any size (and press coverage) was New Hampshire. Again a State heavy in liberals; especially displaced Massachusetts liberals. Net result; RINO McCain because the religious vote was weaker.

Finally we get Michigan, the first large State. Not only is it a State heavy with liberals, but it also had this oddity in that there was no Democrat race and it allows Democrats and independents to vote in the Republican primary. Again net result; no conservative votes and no Thompson, except this time we get Romney; a somewhat native son.

Finally we are moving to South Carolina; a State heavy in conservatives AND religious people. The buzz here is that Fred is surging, but because of the all the liberals in the previous States voters may go with other candidates because of the “winner halo” effect. Especially the liberal religious candidate Huckleberry. The knowledgeable political gurus in SC are predicting a 4-way tie.

I leave with this question. Would the race be the same if South Carolina had been the first State to vote BEFORE Huckleberry got all the attention in Iowa and McShame got all the attention in NH? The answer is that it would have been a landslide for Fred.

"lawless and Ruthless"
Anybody worth his salt and did a little investigation could not vote for a Clinton again.
Mr. Sowell hits the nail on the head when he calls them a disaster for this country.Their political lives reek of corruption. The media have given them a free pass time in and time out.
This country is surely finished with Hillary as president.

BTW folks
SC is another State with no Democrat primary in progress on Saturday and they allow cross-over votes. So look out for mischief.

Rove outlines plan to beat top ’08 Dems
Rove outlines plan to beat top ’08 Dems

What do you think?

THEHILL-Karl Rove provided state Republican officials Wednesday with his strategy for winning the 2008 presidential election, suggesting the party hammer the top Democrats on taxes, immigration, national security and a lack of experience.

Speaking to a group of state GOP executive directors from around the country at the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) winter meeting, Rove said Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) are beatable.

The former adviser to the president made no mention of former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.), who is trailing both Clinton and Obama in most polls.

On Clinton, Rove said the senator talks about fiscal responsibility but has introduced “$800 billion in new spending and the campaign is less than half over.”

Glaring omission
Dr. Sowell was correct when he said there's only one true conservative running, but it's not Thompson. It's Ron Paul. Even though his candidacy is a longshot, he's the only one who can soundly defeat Clinton in the general election. Two groups of people who will turn out in droves to put him in the White House will stay home if any other Republican is nominated. First, those conservatives who were stabbed in the back by the Republicans' out-of-control spending while in control of both houses of Congress and the White House. They could have substantially cut spending, and the Dems would have shrieked and stomped their feet, but they couldn't have stopped them. And the Republicans' majority would have increased, rather than disappearing, in the subsequent election. These voters know that any talk of fiscal responsibility by anybody but Ron Paul is a baldfaced lie. They're tired of lies. They want real spending cuts and real tax relief, not tiny tax cuts that will vanish in a few years. The second group is the anti-war crowd. They'll vote for Dr. Paul over Hillary, but stay home otherwise. If this happens, the losers who think it's the government's job to babysit them from cradle to grave will deliver us the nightmare of a Hillary Clinton presidency. And she'll make her "husband" look like Reagan by comparison. One reason Ron Paul isn't doing better is that people like Dr. Sowell inexplicably continue to pretend that he doesn't exist.

Paulbots, go home!
Dr. Sowell, only 4 stars today as you spent too much on Mitt's religion and while I am sure that there are those that won't vote simpy because of that, I don't believe that his religion is why many do not want to vote for him.

As for Fred, if he wins SC, then the race is essentially tied as there are 4 winners (in major states) in 4 tries and he has just as good a "push" from that as Huck did from Iowa, and McShame did in NH and Mitt did in MI. Each one was on the ropes and bleeding badly until their win. It is no different for Fred, except as Vic noted, there is some carryover effect of people seeing the others win and Fred has not yet. But then, what does that say for Rudy's campaign strategy?? Is he even on the ballot in SC?? When does he start?? For me, hopefully never as I see him as Hillary with a slightly better economic plan.

Update From SC
The local news this morning is reporting a dead heat between McShame and the Huck. The push is on in SC with all the news media (especially the papers) endorsing McShame on the Repub side. The reason for that is that the SC Republican Party bigwigs are supporting McCain due to the urging of his favorite BB Senator Lindseedoil Grahamcracker. The newspapers are supporting himn because they are ALL Democrats. They will turn on ANY Republican after the primaries.

LOL, Sen Grahamcracker will be lucky that he doesn’t lose to “uncommitted” since the Dems chose to not run a candidate saying “he’s our best representative”.

Romney not Mormonism
I know of no one who rejects Mitt Romney because of his religion. I know many who reject him because of $50 abortions.

Like nearly all the rest of our once treasured pundits, you want us to reject Huckabee because of his record, yet you wish us to embrace others regardless of their records.

Either what they once did matters or it doesn't. Either we judge them on what they now say, or we don't.

Doug: writes: "Dr. Sowell was correct

when he said there's only one true conservative running, but it's not Thompson. It's Ron Paul."

You forgot, as most paulists do, it's you OPINION! Seems that a lot more people seem to agree with Dr. Sowell!

"One reason Ron Paul isn't doing better is that people like Dr. Sowell inexplicably continue to pretend that he doesn't exist."

Really? You've got to give it to the paulists! They can come up with one excuse after another as to why paul isn't doing better... And it's ALWAYS somebody elses' fault.

Maybe, it just could be that most people just don't agree with paul.

Bet you never thought of that, now did you???

Ron Paul
Is the only consistent conservative. Unlike the "top tier" candidates (cash-strapped guys who should ask Dr. Paul to lend them some of the $20 million he raised 4 Q 07) he has helped to bring babies into the world, not to kill them. He has never voted for a war of aggression (though he did OK deposing the Taliban) or tax increase. There is no greater defender of free markets in government; indeed, he even advocates monetary liberty for citizens, while subjecting federal government to the stricture of the gold standard. He wants to restore to us ownership of our labor by phasing out the income tax.

It dissappoints me to see a man of Dr. Sowell's dignity and intellect still trembling at the prospect of the Great Nuclear Dragon. How long shall we live in fear of Iran? Where was this cowering when the USSR crumbled and wealthy Muhammadens could approach impoverished keepers of the former Soviet Empire's arsenal? That the world is a dangerous place is nothing new. In times past, however, Americans accepted this reality with stoic dignity while insisting on the preservation of their natural rights.

Our mentalities are those of the eunich, hedonist and battered housewife. The MSM tells us so-and-so is viable and we say, "Yes sir." Our Protestantism has devolved into an Israel-worshipping haven for mental midgets. Secularists are quite right to write off evangelicals as emotionally unstable kooks. The scandal of the evangelical mind . . .

Solidarity is important, especially as the institutions that superintended America's rise come under systematic assault. There is a world of difference between a Catholic and a member of a politically opportunistic, Christ-mocking cult. If given a choice between the Dems and the Mitt, I'll cast my vote down the libertarian abyss. After all, Flip's Michigan victory speech left me wondering if he were still running as a republican.

tim_cuchullaine: Gee, pretty arrogant...

but typical of the paulists' pontification!

5 stars, as usual Dr. Sowell
The bogus poll takers are at it again, and I predict the voters will be turn them on their ear and further marginilize their manipulative scams.

Ron Paul reminds me of a '46 Chevy my brother used to own. It was a homely old car and few people considered it a classic, even though it was in fair shape and would start and run, with not a little smoke and backfiring. The problem with it was a broken tie rod and it sat forlornly in a rancher friend's barnyard for many years, one front wheel pointed left - the other to the right.

This was an easy thing to fix, actually, but Brother eventually decided it just wasn't worth the trouble and sold it for $150.

Other cars currently on the "market":

Sen. Clinton - Ford Crown Victoria w/no heater/AC or radio, cheapest model made with vinyl seats and floor mats but with Lincoln Continental emblems stuck on it which don't fool anyone.

Thompson - old Buick Lasabre; solid car, needs tune up.

Romney - Cadillac Escalade; great vehicle, some factory defects

McCain - older Chevy pickup, wore out but somehow still runs, creating a hazard for others on the road.

Obama - new Ford Explorer; looks and sounds good, but as soon as you drive it off the lot it's worth less than half the sticker price and all the defects show up.

Huckabee - AMC Pacer; what a lemon!

Gulianny - doesn't matter; any car from the NE is a rust bucket. May run great but more and more flakes of rust fall off with each pothole.

Sorry, But
Ron Paul has a foreign policy that sucks wind. Not gonna do it.

Paul's struggle...
...is in the primaries. If he receives the Republican nomination, he will win the White House. While the polling organizations judiciously avoid head to head match-up polls pitting Paul against the Democrat contenders, Zogby inadvertently showed his ultimate electability in one of their polls more than a month ago.

Prayers for South Carolina

Pray for Fred and pray for South Carolina. McCain would be a disaster given his "compromise" on illegals and finance "reform."

I hope Fred talks of that in these final days.

money isn't everything
Paul may have a lot of money but he has no message that's worth anything. His economic policies may be great but they have as much chance of getting implmeneted in today's climate as a snowball on a hot griddle. His foreign policy is so scarey that even the lib Dems couldn't go for it. He's like Ross Perot without all that charm and intellectual heft.

There are no similarities...
...between Perot and Paul. Perot's rhetoric was that of an authoritarian socialist. Paul supports the essence of Americanism: freedom, rule of law, limited government.

primaries
I find it troubling that the media tries to select our presidential candidates based on such a small and skewed sample of the country.

The population of Iowa is not representative of average America. Look at how much time and money was spent on Iowa. - yet NO DELEGATES ARE DETERMINED as a result. yet the press will say someone didn't look good in Iowa ... I guess they're finished.

On the Republican side less than 3% of the total delegates to the convention have been determined; yet we listen to people say things like, "If Mr. XYZ does not dhow better this week it will certainly mean that he's going to drop out of the race."

And it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy - true only because people that supported XYZ get discouraged and start looking for a "more viable" candidate.

(sorry, just had to vent)

The Wisdom of the Founding Fathers
The Founding Fathers are much wiser than we give them credit. They understood human behavior far better than most today. Political electoral processes should not be easy. Making new laws should not be easy. Their wisdom is that they knew that the public may act on a whim and choose what is easy, convenient and popular.

The topsy-turvy world of campaigns is nothing new. It has always been this way. We now have electronic news 24/7/365 that will "instantly" bring wisdom and stupidity to the world in "equal" time. Ain't technology great !

The candidates will be vetted. We will separate the wheat from the chaff. What others see as parties in turmoil and falling apart, I see as the wisdom of "old dead men" who have left their legacy to America and to freedom and liberty.

What will you leave behind for your children and grandchildren. Will you leave them freedom and liberty or will you leave them "government"?

Let The games begin !!

Tibby

Anne
Which parts, Love? Deconstruct me.

Mr. Right: Given the current climate, Dr. Paul's policies are inevitable. But if we pursue them on our own terms, we just might preserve the middle class; which is to say, an America worth fighting for. I'll not spill my blood for an aristocracy, which is where we're headed.

Primary Dilemmas
"Too much is at stake." Every time I have worked for the Libertarian candidate at an election poll during a presidential election many people refuse to support my candidate “because too much is at stake.” So they vote for the republicrat or demopublican and nothing changes. Year in, year out nothing changes except that liberty continues to shrink and government continues to grow. Now Tom Sowell, whom I respect enormously, picks up that tired old mantra. If you want change, real change, you must support it; otherwise you will never get it. Ron Paul is the only honorable man in the race. He is the only choice for Americans who believe in their country and their Constitution. He will follow it to the letter; all of the others on both sides simply pay it lip service and then ignore it. Go with any of them and you bequeath your children ashes; go with Ron Paul and bequeath them liberty. Easy choice for me; why is it so hard for you?

I see a pattern here
Anti-Paul commenters make empty claims and engage in namecalling, whereas Pro-Paul commenters give reasons for their support of Paul and tend to be articulate. Hmmm... I haven't settled on a candidate yet, but I think I better check out Ron Paul more closely now.

GOP must put aside differences
The final results of a democratic win in 2008 with either Hillary or Obama is so dire, that Republicans must put aside differences and get behind who ever the GOP puts up. I too have problems with all the Republicans, but any of them with their warts would be far better than the two dems. especially when you consider the possiblity of appointing 2 new supreme court judges, and forming a team with Reid and Pelosi. This country is in trouble, morally, and politically, The democrats mean higher taxes, more government including intrusive mandatory national health care, more danager from terrorist, scaled down military, open borders, more abortions, same sex marriage, ACLU running wild, more hate crimes laws that take away freedom of speech, loss of self protection through more gun laws, futher loss of industry by enviormental laws that will cost jobs and distroy what is left of our economy. 2008 is the most important election in our lifetime, if conseratives dont put aside one issue differences it could be our most distructive.

roadmaster and Anne are fools for ...
ignoring Paul.

while dismissing the reasoned and impassioned "pontifications" of "tim_cuchullaine" what everyone here is missing is that even the "fair and balanced" voices from the right in the debate have dirty hands and are most certainly not independent, nor are they fair and balanced.

you would hope that Rush, Sowell, O'Reilly, the reactionary Savage, and others were reasoned "Independent" voices in the wilderness given their treatment of Political Correctness in left wing academia and how our values have devolved but just try mentioning some common sense to them that runs contrary to the interests and storyline of the monied elites who pay their salaries and watch how quickly they turn fascist and hang up their phones.

clearly they would seem to be gatekeepers in the Chomsky and Dershowitz mold who are just as beholden to the big money establishment money from the financiers who control all of the MSM and its false globaloney left-right marching orders.

our colleges are an example of pure globalism at its worst: communist feel-good PC multiculturalism from the left or else from the right, University of Chicago, open border, free market globalist claptrap.

ironically the only way to temporarily avoid this globalist agenda is to enroll in one of the service academies where you can then be under the direct employ and service of the neo-Con globalists when you graduate.

Fred can only blame himself
for his poor showing to date. Even though I believe him to represent conservatives better than any of the others,

HE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO FIRE IN HIS BELLY...and it shows.

If he had the intensity of Huckabee or Paul, he would trounce the others.

Comment
I acknowledge that townhall is a conservative Republican website and that here, Thomas Sowell is in his natural element. But when he calls "all Democratic candidates" for the presidency "dangerous" and throws around such words as "corrupt" and "lawless" and "demogogue", he needs to be reminded that the United States is a two-party nation and that holding opposite political views is not a criminal offense.

The sitting party has been pretty much in charge of this country for many years now. So what is the result of its power? Our Constitution and our treaties have been violated. We are involved in a war that arguably was not necessary. Dealing with the aftermath of that war (rebuilding Iraq, taking care of our veterans) will cost money we don't have. Our economy is in trouble. We are hugely in debt to other nations. Domestic problems here at home, ranging from street crime to homelessness to the inaccessibility of health care to the inadequacy of our education system, hamper the prosperity and wellbeing of our people. And yet on this Republican website, I do not hear anyone, except occasionally Pat Buchanan, taking ownership of problems that sit squarely in Republican laps. What I do hear is continuing blame of Democrats and warnings that Democrats will destroy this country.

The performance of the Bush II administration has been such that candidates now running for office do not mention Bush's name. They do not allow Bush to campaign with them. This should tell us all something. The party that created our problems is unlikely to solve them. A change may be salutary.

Staying home on election day ...
... is the worse thing you can do. The effect is the same as if you voted for the other side's candidate.

lilly's...
...9:35 post makes a great case for supporting Dr. Paul. Good work lilly!

Sowell's snub of Ron Paul
Thomas Sowell is a doctrinaire, Friedmanite monitarist. He loves the FED. Therefore, he is not about to give any credit to someone like Dr. Paul, who hates the FED, and has vowed to do away with it if elected.

To Tibby
Re "What will you leave your grandchildren---liberty or government": The two are not antithetical. I sincerely hope that our legacy will be government, because the alternative to government is anarchy. I would enormously prefer to leave children a world of social order rather than one in which an unregulated and unlawed people fend, each for himself, using bullying, greed, and guns.

Vote to win or make a statement?
For the gemeral election, it gets down to this question: “Given the choices we have, do we use our vote to make a statement, or to win an election?”

An excellent analysis can be found here
http://www.intellectualconservative.com/2007/12/10/why-vote -for-a-winner .

Sowell has not ignored Paul
Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams have both had positive things to say about Ron Paul. They haven't ignored him.

lilly
"I would enormously prefer to leave children a world of social order rather than one in which an unregulated and unlawed people fend, each for himself, using bullying, greed, and guns."

I would enormously prefer a world in which people are educated in and knowledgeable about economics, history, cultures, human behavior. People unlike yourself, in other words.

To all you Paulistas
Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame. That's all you're gonna have.

The trouble with Fred
Is pretty much the same as McCain, he's too old. McCain may have him shaded by a few years, but actually acts younger than tired worn out Fred. Please let's not have another half hearted campaign like Dole's, no matter how much we want a conservative.
If Hillary should get the nomination I would hope that there is further examination into her China connections. There are just entirely too many unaswered questions about Hsu in my opinion. Whoever wins the Repub nomination needs the support of everyone of us.
By the way, don't forget Romney won Wyoming! We count!

If Fred Thompson
did a song and dance and told more jokes, the American voter might consider him. Our problem is voters are not informed and are making decisions on superficials. How dangerous!!!!!

As chairman of a polling site in Michigan, I was afforded an interesting look at voter preferances because this time voters had to declare what ballot they wanted, democrat or republican.

In our upper class community, we don't have a lot of democrat voters. The ratio seemed to be 4 republicans to 1 democrat (3/4 of the 1200 registered voters voted). Of the democrats, 3/4 were young females. Of all the democrat voters, most were residents of two streets of very modest homes. Of the male democrat voters, I personally knew 3 were teachers and one was a rebellious 21 year old cancelling his PHD father's vote.

Romney was clearly the winner. Where McCain garnered the most votes was in the western part of the state heavily evangelical.(Question: did Romney's mormanism play a part?)Huckabee was a more distant third.

Hillary gained few votes in mostly black Detroit even thoough Obama was not on the ballot. 40% simply voted "uncommitted".

Sowell,
Some of the objections to former governor Mitt Romney raise a disquieting question as to whether religious differences alone are enough for some voters to pass up a candidate whom they would consider voting for otherwise. It's not just his religion - his record is unacceptable and he must be held responsible for ALL DECISIONS MADE WHILE HE WAS IN MA. It is disgusting how Romniacs are incapable of understanding this simple concept. Yes, mormons are cultists but what makes Romney even more unacceptable is his complete record that can not be spinned without raising the questions about his authenticity. Also, his statements of half truths i.e. I have lobbysts as advisers not as managers and while they give me free advice I will not let them influence me as president - make his level of corruption worse than the Clintons. Mitt made millions cutting jobs to make corporations profitable, now he wants to use government to ensure "michigan jobs remain in michigan". What a weasel! He is a cultist and a corrupt person - no deal.

barb - re: Romney and $50abortions
you wrote:

"I know of no one who rejects Mitt Romney because of his religion. I know many who reject him because of $50 abortions."

I think you ought to look into this a little more, because this aspect of the implementation of the health plan in Massachusetts was done by a committee, not by Romney, and was outside his control.

He did the best that could be done given the circumstances.

Buzzkat
Actually, I turned on to Dr. Paul a few years ago, when gold was at $425. I bought two pounds. Gold is now pushing $900, with no political will to slow its ascent. Not a bad return over 4 years. Ron Paul has given me more than 15 minutes of fame.

Thanks, Dr. Paul, for educating this CPA about money and economics.

If Fred Thompson
Campaigned with a shaved ape named "Israel," he'd carry the South.

Choice
As usual, you have pinpointed the dilemna. A less than conservative Romney, or Guiliani, or McCain,is probably better than any liberal!

How sad Sarah!
So Romney is a cultist. Such anger. Does that anger expend to Senater Reid and the other republican senator (I am pulling a bland) who is a mormon and years ago ran for president?

allenfuller
writes, "I saw pigs flying over my house tonight"

Three different ones or just pigs on the wing?

I know what you mean. There is a small cadre of Tim McVeigh types that are useful idiots to the republican party much like the majority of liberals are useful idiots to our enemies. These xenophobic people led by Pat Buchannon among others see the CFR as an equal or worse threat than marxism ever was. Do get a grip folks. You are the folks that give democratic charges of republican racism just enough credibility to hurt our natural and logical appeal to many groups in this country that consequently stay firmly in the democratic camp.

If you do not wish to sell any products you produce to people in other countries or of different ethnicities or buy anything from them, that is your choice. Closing our borders to trade only hurts everybody.

The senile old man strikes again

"While Barack Obama and John Edwards have been irresponsible demagogues"

A Th poster and Sowell supporter once responded to one of my insults of Dr. Sowell for his attack on liberalism by saying I shouldn’t insult Sowell because Sowell attacks liberalism with facts, and doesn't do personal attacks. Well the above statement is one of many times that Sowell has called the Democratic candidates “demagogues" without providing any facts or rationale to back it up. I don’t care what you neocon drones think, being a Democrat or liberal doesn't equate to being a "demagogue". So if the senile old man is gonna call someone that, he needs to back it up with the facts that he is so famous for.

None of the Republican candidates are going to fit anyone's idea of a perfect candidate. Mr. Sowell has summed up the defects and a few disquieting trends very well.

We face the problem of beating the Democratic nominee, no matter who we run and how "bad" he is. We must nominate a strong candidate, construct a solid platform for him to run on and then elect him, warts and all.

The alternative stares us in the face:

1989-1993: Bush, GHW
1993-2001: Clinton, WJ
2001-2009: Bush, GW
2009-2017: Clinton, HR
2017-2025: Bush, Jeb(?), A Twin(?)
2025-2033: Clinton, Chelsea

All the above brought to you by the CFR.

You get the idea.

loco, Reid is not a liar so
he is an authentic person who happens to be a cultist (nobody is perfect). Mitt, however, is a liar and a cultist - a very bad combination. Maybe the cult does influence his half-truths but you too must believe that lobbysts are giving him free advice without expecting anything back in return. What a refreshing new day in the world of lobbying - or is Mitt lying? Considering his dad worked for Nixon, the great american president of character who never lied, Mitts problems are being a liar, cultist and maybe genetic. That is what is sad.

Sowell is a partisan hack
“It was Bill Clinton who ignored the advice of military and intelligence officials when he gave China the technology that can be used to enable their nuclear missiles to hit American cities.”

It was George Bush who has plundered the government’s surplus created DURING the Clinton administration by authorizing an illegal invasion in Iraq based on the laws of the Geneva conventions and our own constitution

“It was Bill Clinton who ignored the advice of military and intelligence officials when he gave China the technology that can be used to enable their nuclear missiles to hit American cities.”

It was George Bush that ignored the advice of top military advisers to increase the initial amount of ground troops during the first 3 months of the occupation of Iraq. Doing so would have curtailed the looting and violence that contributed to the destruction of the infrastructure of the country.

“It was Bill Clinton who gave the North Koreans help on their nuclear program in exchange for promises that have -- predictably -- proved worthless”

It was George W Bush that placed an unqualified horse lawyer (Mike Brown) in charge of Fema. This pathetic lack of judgment contributed to the slow and deplorable federal response to hurricane Katrina. In addition to this, it was George W Bush who LIED about not being informed about the possible break of the New Orleans levees. He was caught on video being told about the possible break.

Sowell is a partisan hack p2
One can always identify partisan hacks by their willingness to overly criticize the mistakes of their political adversaries, while turning a blind eye to the incompetence of their own political buffoons. I have read Sowell’s columns ever since Bush has been in office, and rarely has he ever criticized Bush, and the idiotic mistakes that have contributed to his now 32 percent approval rating to the extent that he just criticized both Bill and Hillary Clinton. I’m not saying I’m this huge Clinton fan, but Bill Clinton’s approval rating was 60 percent when he left office. Somebody thought he did something right.

Lilly - Strawmen abound
*** "lilly writes: Friday, January, 18, 2008 9:43 AM

Re "What will you leave your grandchildren---liberty or government": The two are not antithetical. I sincerely hope that our legacy will be government, because the alternative to government is anarchy. I would enormously prefer to leave children a world of social order rather than one in which an unregulated and unlawed people fend, each for himself, using bullying, greed, and guns. " ***

Lilly,

Using your logic, that the opposite of government is anarchy, I can just as easily twist Tibby's question by stating that the opposite of liberty is totalitarianism.

Are you for totalitarianism?

writes, "indeed, he even advocates monetary liberty for citizens, while subjecting federal government to the stricture of the gold standard."

Which shows why he is fringe candidate that has zero chance of being elected to anything more than a congressional representative or senator. I like Dr. Paul. I love his push for constitutional government which is limited government. When it comes to anything else, the guy is nuts and so are his followers. Since Pat Buchannon is not running, Paul has picked up the Tim McVeigh vote which only creates even more crdibility problems for the libertarian party. H*ll, I call myself a libertarian but, I could never vote for someone who buys into the entire libertarian platform as it is currently written.

Dr. Paul's problem is not that his idea of returning to the limited government espoused by our founders is not welcome by conservatives. It is that everything else he says is so far out of touch with reality that he can be dismissed as a lunatic and his otherwise good fiscal spending ideas are dismissed with him.

I certainly don't want to return to the days of no Federal Reserve System with wild swings in the economy including another great depression subject only to the whims of our elected officials. Hillary, being a communist FDR clone, would meet such a crisis the same way and make it worse rather than better. It is because of the Federal Reserve that we have not and never will have another experience like that.

Of course, we can still switch enough of the economy to government control through the democratic process to create a downward spiral that even herculean effort by the Fed could not stop. If you Paul supporters don't vote in November for the Republican nomineee because of your convictions, it will serve you right when Hillary comes knocking on your door with the sheriff to confiscate your property for the greater good.

I suppose the incompetence of the (Democrat) mayor of New Orleans and the (Democrat) governor of Lousiana had NOTHING to do with FEMA's slow response?

Sowells analysis is flawed. The Dems have narrowed the field effectively to two candiates with an outside chance for three. The Repubs. have a problem bacause all of their candidates are flawed, the conservative movement is fracturing and none of these candidates can pull it together.

Huckabee has resonance with religious conservatives who like his message and the way he delivers it. Country club conservatives (wall street) hate him. Liberatarians love Ron Paul who is the most genuine candidate of all of them, but true libertarians are a small miniority approximately equal with anarchists in the Democratic party. Romney is the Madison Avenue conservative always trying to micro refine his message to match where he is or the latest polls. He appears to slick and his real message is hire me I am a good businessman I will get the job done. Fred Thompson turned out to me a lot less like Arthur Branch that expected. Seems he can't project the charimas on the stump that he projects on TV. To give him his due he was great in the last debate, his best performance yet. But he is no Ronald Reagan.

McCain has the appeal he has always had, but what independents like best about him does endear him with the conservative establishment that above all else expects ideological purity from it's candidates. Guliani's Florida only strategy, his odd personality, and his own baggage make him an unlikely favorite in the shakeout.

Inspite of all of this I believe the party will rally around whoever gets the nomination, but it won't matter because this is just not the Republican's year. But if I had to bet who would have the best chance of winning for the Republicans it would be John McCain. You can't deny that he has some crossover appeal especially with idependents.

I really hope you are not pouring all your hopes into gold. You will retire on a social security check if you do not diversify. Gold is simply a commodity like any other. The only reason it was used as money in the past was because of its abundance and the fact that people chose to value it. Why not base our dollar on the value of pork bellies or frozen concentrated orange juice, makes just as much sense. diamonds? platinum? It does not matter. Just pick one and run with it. If government authority is put behind it, than we can use pieces of paper as money and it does not matter. Oh, that is what we do, isn't it.

Why don't you just go away?

You are famous for your namecalling while simultaneously complaining about namecalling. Don't you see the hypocrisy? Have you no shame?

You might also want to go to a source like dictionary.com and look up words you have difficulty with like "demagouge" - "a person, esp. an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people." Then you can see what the writer means when he uses these difficult words. You might want to go ahead and see if the word then applies as the writer suggests, you know, look at the facts, the record, of the person or events.

I'm sorry these basic skills, not to mention critical thinking, were lacking in whatever schools failed you. This can be overcome with diligence on your part; no need to call a lawyer - you are only doomed to struggle with these challenges if you don't take responsibility for yourself. You can do it! We would sure appreciate it.

I hate to tell you this, but the Great Depression happened on the Federal Reserve's watch. All our boom and bust cycles since 1913 (the year the Fed was established) have been caused by the monetary policy of the Fed, when it expands and contracts the money supply. Federal Reserve Notes, i.e. the "cash" in your wallet, is backed by "reserves" which are nothing but debt instruments (e.g. govt bonds), and only on a fractional basis, at that. This debt is not paid off, but rolled over indefinitely. In fact, if the govt paid off its debt the money supply would vanish, which would be a veritable economic disaster for us. Hence, the Federal Reserve System has put us on the road to perpetual debt, stealing from the middle class and the poor, by way of inflation (which is a hidden tax on these classes of people). Nice legacy.

And you have the audacity to ask for our vote to help YOUR big government Republican beat the big government Liberal?

Screw you. And screw the Republican party at this point.

I am a conservative and I stand on principle. Period. If I wanted to vote for big government, I would vote for a democrat. I will NOT vote for big government. There are much more important things than party. Especially a party that has mocked and made fun of conservatives for years now.

If Ron Paul does not win, it will be because the party has been attacking him for decades, especially this election cycle. Why in the hell would we support them?

Agree with you 100%. A President Hillary will be no respecter of our constitutional rights.

Anthony Thomas, BDS sufferer
Those of you with BDS just don't get it.

Why would you expect Thomas Sowell to write about Bush's faults? Bush is not on the ballot. Whatever Bush's faults, which are numerous, he is not a candidate.

On the other hand, Hillary with all of the "experience" she gained during Bill's presidency is.

The Fed Created the Great Depression
By oversupplying the markets with debt/currency in the 1920's. An inevitable bubble of speculation formed on Wall Street. When it burst, the Fed contracted the money supply 33% between Oct. 1929 and March 1933. Only when FDR confiscated real money (gold) from U.S. citizens did the most powerful men in the free world deign to allow the econcomy the liquidity it needed to operate. The suffering was so intense that prior "depressions" were subsequently renamed "recessions" for honesty's sake.

Gold does not prevent poor resource allocation and recessions. But neither does the Fed. What gold does, however, is prevent malinvestment from being papered over with a deluge of inflationary legal tender. Gold exposes poor financial policy by forcing fast correction. Gold forces investors and speculators to learn their lessons and not repeat their errors. Gold prevents the political class' excesses of warfare and welfare from becoming the peaceful, productive class' crippling debts. Gold limits the size and operation of government, an intrinsically parasitic and abusive entity.

Protected by legal tender laws and perpetuated by the income tax, The Fed delays the day of reckoning and exacerbates the ultimate carnage. The Fed transfers wealth and initiative from citizen to State. The Fed keeps us at Mama Government's nipple. The Fed cooks the frog slowly.

Personally, I own gold as a hedge; I realize it is not a revenue-generating asset. I don't worship the stuff. But it is good you mentioned diversification, Hitchhiker. Would to God that more Americans understood and practiced this concept. But when annual currency debasement (made possible by The Fed and legal tender laws) lays a hidden tax of 3 - 10% on labor and savings, fewer and fewer families have any profit to invest, anyways.

While you are correct to state that the Federal Reserve System had been created in 1913, the rest is not quite correct. The bills in my pocket are backed by limited reserves. The banks are required to keep a certain reserve to meet the demands for cash by customers and prevent a panic or bank run that could seriously damage the economy. Banks choose to keep U.S. Treasury securities primarily for this reserve because reserves can only be invested in safe havens. U.S. treasury securities are considered risk free from default because they are backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government and we all know they can raise money easily if they choose. They simply take more of mine and yours.

The spending and debt pratices of Congress impact monetary policy but are not the cause of it. Your claim that money would simply dissappear if the government paid off our debt shows the shallowness of your argument.

The federal reserve has nothing to do with how much debt congress wishes to issue or how much debt you personally take on, it simply reacts to such inputs to keep the economy on an even track. When the fed was created, economics was still in its infancy and experience was short on just how the fed should operate. It wasn't until after the stagnation and inflation of the 70's under Carter that the fed really matured and learned what they can and cannot do. They are not all powerful. They do not control everything financial. They only influence and attempt to smooth the peaks and valleys through monetary policy. Poor fiscal policy by Congress can counteract or weaken actions by the federal reserve.

You are falling into the same trap as most democrats as well as the CFR conspiracy theorists. The damn government controls everything anyway so we might as well accept it and vote for the guy or gal that we think will benefit us rather than the other guy.

Uh, because they are far far less evil than the competition. You can certainly choose to cast your vote for Paul on principle, it is a free country. Every four years for eternity, you can choose priciple and vote for someone who might get 2% of the vote or choose not to vote at all. It will not help this country or make a difference is all I am saying.

In a parlimentary system, it would be different. You Paul people could team up with other groups to form a coalition and a ruling majority. We do not have such a system and the reality is only one of two candidates is going to be chosen. You can face reality and act accordingly or stick your head in the sand on principle. While you still have that choice, the country is ok. If, by exercising that choice, the country is brought closer to the day when we no longer have any choices, then you will have contributed. That is my fear.

GOP Elite Deserve Hillary
The talking heads of the GOP elite that have crapped all over Reagan's eleventh commmandment not to attack fellow Repbulicans deserver the revolt that his happening. They deserve to suffer the destruction of the party and four years of Hillary. It's one thing to contrast positions of other candidates, but to have all of voices on talk-radio and the rest of conservative media spewing out the same tired talking points about everyone else not being a true conservative is total BS. Anyone who has really taken time to listen to the candidates knows that there is a agenda by the GOP elite to try and choose their candidate.

Anyone who has really taken the time look at Huckabee's record instead of simply trusting what the talking heads feed them know that these guys are lieing through their teeth. At the same time if you really look at Romney's record, it's clear his record as Govenor is much worse. The real problem Sowell is having is the people are simply not buying it. The man they want is Romney, but anyone who looks at him honestly sees how fake he really is.

Read here for an honest conservative evaluation of Romney's record from the American Specator (you know the magazine Rush's recommends):
http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=12568

And look at MedVed's word by word analysis of Romney's victory speech. If this isn't liberal speak, I don't know what is:

http://michaelmedved.townhall.com/blog/g/741d812a-c161-4623 -893e-5072488703b1&comments=true#commentAnchor

One final thought. When the MSM begins spewing the same talking points in lock-step, conservatives know there is an agenda being pushed. Why is it that when almost all of the conservative media does the same thing we don't question their motives? True conservatives have thoughtful dialog and when they all begin talking in unison using the same slander and name calling, the thoughful person will question if what they are saying is true.

you must ignore old delusional lilly. As she is nothing more than another idiot who welcomes more socialism. In her pathetic mind we don't pay enough taxes and govt should be there to rescue everybody from everything. However in the dims world there is no such thing as govt having too much in tax dollars. The missus clinton has already discussed taking profits from lawful publicly held companies and that she has more ideas than the country can afford but that doesn't stop the left from hailing her as the answer to americas problems. But when has the left ever talked of eliminating failed govt programs. QWhen does the left evcer assail govt waste. In the last budget congress wanted to raise spending by 11%. Plus despite the promises of reid and pelosis the pork waste continues unabated. We need politicians talking and acting on fiscal responsibilities. But with the dims big three, all are singing the same message. More taxes and more govt. On the sidelines the lilly's of the left are singing their praises as being all caring in contrast to the repubs who have traditionly, but abandoned under bush, fiscal responsibility.

Diagnosis: Apologist for socialism

Fallacy: That there is a lick of difference between the dems and the republican parties right now. They are BOTH raping us.

I don't like what Bush has done anymore than what Clinton had done.

I don't like our military being exported, our bordered being left unguarded, and our important infrastructure being sold to foreign countries.

I don't like *free trade* agreements that favor other countries at the expense of our own.

I don't like *stimulis* to the economy, and I don't like government borrowing simply to pretend they aren't spending more. The difference here is that Dems will tax more to pay for it, and the Republicans will just borrow more and give tax cuts. But sooner or later, the bills will come due. They are simply hoping it will happen on a Democrat's watch.

See, I don't have to be a democrat to bash the republican party. I know you WANT it to be that simple. But, it is clear from your statements that you just like big government and will vote for it.

I will not. Period. My vote is an endorsement of the candidate's policies. And I do NOT endorse Romney's $50 million handout to the auto industry in Michigan. And I do NOT endorse government run healthcare.

If we get it anyway, it won't be because I voted for it.

I have before but, this time I have a candidate I like in the primaries. I only hope if Paul is not the nominee, that you folks do the right thing in November.

I voted
for Bush in 2000. I voted for Bush because he ran on lies. I didn't want Gore to win.

I didn't get what I voted for.

This time, the candidates aren't even really lying about being big government hacks.

Their expansion of government is right there in our faces in big bold neon letters.

I voted for a different Bush than we got.

I am NOT going to vote for more of what I got that I didn't want.

I would be an idiot if I did it again.

Thanks.

But we will have to agree to disagree about the rest.

There are two (perhaps three) candidates (yes, Republicans) that I *might* vote for if they get the nomination, but their chances are even more slim than Ron Paul's.

THAT'S my problem. The VERY worst are being pushed on us. There are other *acceptable* choices to Paul. THOSE would be the lesser of evils. But the main ones being pushed are just evil. Period.

Can Sowell focus on the issue at hand? Obviously not, because he continually uses his columns to take unwarranted, unrelated cheap shots at the democratic candidates, and liberal's in general. 1/3 of his column is about Bill Clinton. This is what I was responded to. Also, Hillary was elected to the United States Senate. She is (whether you like her or not) an elected official. She is her own woman, and should be judged accordingly, not based on the mistakes of Bill Clinton.

I agree

"and our important infrastructure being sold to foreign countries."

If you want to own a highway, go for it. They are for sale by many states willing to do anything for more money. If Dubai bought a section of interstate that you travel to work, how exactly is that going to impact you. Perhaps they will require all women travelers to wear burquas but, somehow I doubt it. The same fears were raised years ago about Japanese buying american companies. The issue is not whether some foreign or domestic company owns infrastructure but, whether it should be sold at all.

I don't like *free trade* agreements that favor other countries at the expense of our own.

Me either. Can you name some? I think you really do not like *free trade*. If it is truly free and equal, what is the problem? It is only when the government creates exceptions to free trade or negotiates deals that are unequal that problem arise.

Grow up. You sound like the kid who doesn't get his way so he takes his ball and goes home. You must look at the results of your pout and see the possibility of Hillary or Obama (or possibly Edwards) in the White House. Consider the results of your actions. That would sure show us, wouldn't it - but you can't really quit this game and go home. All of us must live with the collective results of our decision.

Politics is the art of the possible. You must understand how our system works in able to accomplish anything. Your message, and many others from the Ron Paul camp, tell us you do not understand how things work. I am not cynically saying, as some do, that you are dreaming and nothing can be done. I am saying that you must work within the system and to do that you must first understand how the system works. Parties and platforms matter. Mobilizing people matters. Ron Paul has done the mobolizing part well. It is unfortunate for him that at this point it does not look like he will be the nominee. Now, the question is, is having Paul the nominee the only acceptable outcome for you? Or having at least part of what he proposes brought into the platform a "win" for you? The first question is the "will you take your ball and go home" type. The second question deals with political reality and politics as the art of the possible. You must be willing to work with us and support us if you want us to support you and what you want. This is how it works.

Citizens Lobby
writes, "2000 was ignorance. In 2004, I bought hitchhiker's BS and voted for Bush again."

After four years of Kerry, I doubt you would say that but, we will never know will we.

Citizens Lobby pt2
The "Independent" who is going to "vote for the best candidate of whatever party" does not understand the system and the importance of this and party platforms. Just in case I need to spell it out, the platform is a statement of what we stand for and what we are going to try to accomplish, when and if possible. (If you have a good person working hard to accomplish things you do not want done, you should not vote for that "good" person. Is a Senator or Representative "effective" is the question only if they are effective doing things you want done!)

A current example of real politics is the illegal aliens problem. This past year The People Spoke. Some of those running for office heard and have added this to their platform. This is a "win" for those against illegal alien amnesty. This, by the way, is what happens to the best ideas of those who form 3rd parties. The good ideas get co-opted by one or the other parties and the 3rd party loses steam.

Do you want to "win" on some things that are important to you or would you rather all of us "lose" on everything?

Pick up
Romney will pick up most of Fred's vote. He is conservative on all major dimensions.

Fred has clearly demonstrated that he can not sustain a robust campaign across multiple states. He camped out in IA and ran 3rd barely. He camped out in SC and will be 3rd or 4th. He does not have the money to run massive ads on Super T.

At this point he is dividing up the conservative vote which helps McCain, Rudy and Huck the 3 most liberal candidates.

Hillary is not running on her senate experience. She _is_ running on her "presidential" experience during Bill's term. Therefore, Bill's actions become Hillary's of her own free will.

If you don't agree with Sowell's characterization of events from Bill's term, say so. But Bush has nothing to do with it.

Your wordsmith is far better than mine. I wish I had written that.

the missus clinton's experience
that she and bubba are claiming she was deeply invloved in policy matters fails to pass the smell test. Since she didn't have natl security clearence if bubba apprised her of such matters wouldn't he be guilty of violating security matters. The missus clinton assures all that bubba won't have security clearence in her administration but what guarantees do we have concerning that as the clintons are notorious from taking liberties with the truth and standing in front of others lying through their teeth. As for her "great" senate experience what is the list of senate bills she introduced by herself that she ushered through to passage. Signing on to others bills is no more than her other claims that being married to bubba made her co-president. But hewr voting record is far to left on almost everty issue. She opposed every conserv issue and opposed confirmation, I believe, all of bushes judge appointments. Even though repubs voted for confirmation of bubbas choices for the supremes she stood in opposition to both roberts and alito. Her claim that she is a unifier is again leftist fantasy as she has always followed the party line and continues to refer to repubs by such endearing terms as the repub attack machine and the vast right wing conspiracy. She has promised to be the president of every sapecial interest group supporting her nominatiuon but has yet to make the case she will be the president for all of america

Sir Michael
Sir you have hit the nail on the head with your 12:50 post. Poor Anthony seems to only be able to repeat things he has heard or read by other libs. Kinda like a parrot. Thats why he can not engage you about Doc Sowell's article. He has to keep it centered around his trite attacks if he can't he has nothing at all to say.

Paul and kucinich for 08

Duncan Hunter
Oh my Duncan Hunter, wherefor art thou?

Dr. Sowell's point is correct. All concerned conservatives must rally around (and contribute to and campaign for) whomever the Republicans finally nominate. The alternative--President Hillary or Barack--is too ghastly to contemplate.

Any of the R's are an order of magnitude better than those two.

Roadmaster...I'm late to the game...
But he had the best post of all....still lmao at the comparisons of the candidates to vehicles. Keep more of 'em like that coming!

Hitchiker
I do not support Paul, but I need to correct you.

It was not gold that caused the fluctuations you seem to fear, but the earlier central banking schemes which caused monetary instability.

Nor does the Fed stabilize money. Just check out 1929 and 1932 to see how the Fed "stabilizes" money.

I doubt I will live to see a gold standard, but I do have to say a true gold standard (best approached in the 1870's, though still diluted with "state banking" schemes and remnant greenbacks from the 1860's) would be much more stable than a managed currency.

Still, supporting gold is hardly enough to get me to endorse Ron Paul.

To Lilly et al
Thanks for taking the bait.

There are many societies that have social order. Most all of which were either socialist or communist and in some cases are still so. The social order of family, church and community is being replaced by our developing "nanny" state.

The Founding Fathers recognized that some government was necessary. It is for that reason we also transitioned from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution. The government was secondary in establishing social order when compared to the social order of the day. Using this same reasoning is why Jefferson saw that newspapers were more important than government, if given a choice between the two.

Like it or not our country is leaning more to socialism, whether you wish to call it that or not. Conservatives are often compared to Fascists. Il Duce, Mussolini, was a Fascist. He was a socialist who knew what is best for people. Look where that led. Conservatives are not socialists.

We are going to get more social order through government if that is what you wish. You will leave your children that legacy. But in the process they will have fewer liberties than we now enjoy. Will they thank you for that ?

And I have to say as long as Paul attracts the CFR conspiracy theorist, the particularly despicable types who use "anti-Zionism" to hide antisemitism, white power types, and a bevy of other nutjobs, and Paul does nothing to distance himself from these assorted fruits and nuts, I have to say I could never support him, no matter what he said.

Added too that some of the nutty things he says are enough to turn me off, even without the loony supporters.

So I was just arguing with you about the gold standard. I have no love for the Paulites or Ron Paul.

Typo
"Added to that" not "added too that". Sorry for the typo.

every one of these is better than dems
Sowell alludes to it - but in my opinion, every single one of the 5 top republican candidates - EVERY SINGLE ONE - would receive my vote in order to keep the democrats out of the white house. I really believe we're arguing about much smaller differences between them, as compared to Hillary, Obama, or Edwards. So just remember - they might not be perfect - every one of them has things we might not like - but also, every one of them has very positive attributes too.

Rick
I am with you. I was saying the same thing in 2006. Everyone was calling for us to "send a message" and vote in the dems to make the republicans move right. My worries were:

1. What if the R's see the D's winning and think they need to turn left to win? In other words, what if they get the wrong message?

2. What harm will the dems do, and can the R's undo it? (Think of FDR or Wilson and how they managed to make changes we still have to deal with today. One politician can do A LOT of damage.)

My thought was, better to get a RINO I support 10% than a dem I support 0%.

In a fit of shameless self-promotion, I have to say I have a blog post form last week on this very topic.

There, over that bit of hucksterism. Back to being a bit more dignified and less of a salesman.

Paul and Kucinich for 08

Hitchhiker (part 1 of 2)
While seemingly plausible, there is confusion in your argument. First you admit that our "cash" is based on "reserves" which are debt instruments (the example you cited is U.S Treasury securities). So far we are in agreement. Then we start to diverge.

The reason why I put "reserves" in quotes is illustrated quite nicely by your "panic and bank run" scenario. Who is going to make a run on those banks? To make the run, you need to turn in the bank notes for the commodity it represents. That assumes those notes, in our case Federal Reserve Notes, are demand notes, but they are not. What are you going to demand? The legal tender laws put the kibosh on that. The short of it is that there can be no more runs on banks.

But before you think that's a good thing, let’s look at the rest of your argument. You claim that: "U.S. treasury securities are considered risk free from default because they are backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government and we all know they can raise money easily if they choose. They simply take more of mine and yours."

I agree with the statement of this claim, but an important question then arises. What kind of bank "reserves" are these when your say that ultimately the "reserves" are just money which is stolen from us ("They simply take more of mine and yours.")? The answer is that they are not reserves at all. The "full faith and credit of the federal government" is exactly what you said: simply that they "take more of [my money] and yours." Don’t you see that this is ethically and morally wrong, being based on not only on theft, but dishonesty too?

Hitchhiker (part 2 of 2)
Then you say that "the spending and debt pratices (sic) of Congress impact monetary policy but are not the cause of it." This is only half right. The fact is that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, and the *hundreds* of amendments that have followed it in the succeeding years, have established a partnership of Congress *and* the Fed to not only "impact monetary policy," as you said, but to also be the cause of it. You can’t separate the two. Congress needs the Fed to create money for it to spend (so they don’t have to tax you and I -- that wouldn’t be good policy for them to pursue if they want stay in office), and the Fed needs the "reserves" Congress will "give them," i.e. they need Congress to continually deficit spend. And as you said, in effect you and I are the guarantors of those "reserves". Sickening isn't it?

Also you haven't established this claim: "Your claim that money would simply dissappear (sic) if the government paid off our debt shows the shallowness of your argument."

I would love to hear your reasoning for this claim. If the debt that the Fed is holding as "reserves" gets paid off, and thus those "reserves" are no longer there to back money that the Fed floated, the Fed would have to reduce the reserve ratios to keep that same money floating. As we get that ratio closer to zero, I wonder how anyone, especially foreigners who are holding notes would feel about holding them for longer. I’ll let you figure out the end to that story yourself.

Finally you say: "You are falling into the same trap as most democrats as well as the CFR conspiracy theorists. The damn government controls everything anyway so we might as well accept it and vote for the guy or gal that we think will benefit us rather than the other guy."

I never said such a thing. But if it makes you feel better, beat that strawman all you like. :-)

RINO
By the way - I don't consider ANY of the top 5 to be RINOs. There probably isnt a regular reader here who didnt have good things to say about Rudy during his tenure as mayor. While Mitt was gov, he did many things to please regular republicans. The list goes on for ALL of them.

Feeding the trolls
"not ashamed to be right" says, Don't feed the trolls. But it is fun! I always enjoy confusing the issue with facts.

There is nothing more irritating to a lib than being nice to them and "feeding them with facts" it is poison to the irrational mind.

“Right. Every single comment to a Sowell column begins with you saying he is a "senile old man." There has never been a "fact" to back up this perpetual assertion."

Well, I guess you just can't read to well because my attack on Sowell was not just about his mental state, but also about his constant unwarranted attacks on liberals, Democrats and blacks in his columns. As far as this column is concerned, I stated earlier that Sowell did not back up his attack on Obama, Edwards and Clinton with facts. Based on the definition you provided of “demagogue", all politicians would fit the mold. Yet Sowell only uses it when referring to the Democratic candidates with no justification or FACTS. I know you guys think Sowell is no less than Jesus Christ and all, but just calling someone a “demagogue" doesn't mean they are a “demagogue". This, along with his bias attack on Clinton's record, is why I called him a partisan hack.

As for his mental state, what kind of columnist writes countless columns titled "Random thoughts”? lmao. .

Goodbye.

Sir Michael
Going by Anthony Thomas 3:12 post your 12:50 post is confirmed. He Totally incapable of dealing with the substance of Doc. Sowell's article. All he can do is bleat about Doc. Sowell's style and call names.

"Simple. Because Hillary was such an integral part of Bill's presidency. That is her legacy. That is what she brings to the table"

When Hillary talks about her 35 years of experience, she's talking about her senate career as well. Also, it's debatable if Hillary will run the country the way her husband did. There is no evidence that exist that says she will. Neocons assume she will, just out of pure hate for the Clintons. Because of this, I thought it was unfair for Sowell to attack her because of her husband's record. Were George Bush Sr., and George Bush Jr. the same?

Depression
Just a historical commment:

Before the Great Depression they used "depression" because it was supposed to be less bad and therefore scary than the "panics," which is what they called serious economic downturns in earlier times.

Since the Great Depression we don't call them "depressions" anymore, we call them "recessions" for the same reason.

Recession has a definition, "two consecutive quarters of falling real gross national product."

It is good to use the actual definitions in such cases, IMO, so we can do our fact-checking and know the true condition. It's too bad the MSM didn't do that in 1992.

a poster to these threads yesterday quoted the missus clinton when she said "I've always been sure of bill's love for me". This is the statement of someone totally delusional concerning bubba. That the missus clinton's married life has been a combination of being bubba's enabler, the doormat he wiped his feet on with his frequent philandering and worst still his chief defender who attacked the women who came forward with their tales of sexual predator bubba's treatment of them. The only fight she knows is fighting for bubba's right to be a sexual molestor. Now we are to believe that should she get elected bubba won't be returning to the oval office to make decisisons. She has stepped aside for bubba her whole married life, why would anyone think anything has changed. The only thing different is a role reversal. During bubba's years in power, the missus clinton was his attack dog. Now that she is running for potus, bubba has assumed the role of attack dog but his eye is on his return to power

Jesse/Knight Who Said NI/Sir Michael
The following statement by “Jesse” is an example of insults without facts:

"Your insipid rantings, whining complaints, and lock-step boiler-plate capital-L liberal half-thoughts do more to denigrate Liberals, Democrats, and "African-Americans" than David Duke every could. Not that David Duke would be welcome on Townhall, I just wanted to use an example you could relate to. You know, as the Liberal, Democrat, "African-American" walking stereotype that you are.

Please. Just. Go. Away.

Idiot."

The poster, Jesse, says that my post were "insipid rantings, whining complaints, and lock-step boiler-plate capital-L liberal half-thoughts” without giving a legitimate reason why. He then proceeds to call me an "idiot".

This sort of name calling would be justified, if Jesse had the intellect to provide an analytical argument on why my post were “insipid rantings, whining complaints," etc...., and why I was an idiot. But until then....

Not wanted
Amazing that some people continue to go where they are not wanted, even after being told repeatedly that they are not wanted.

I was raised with better manners than that.

More of the incivility of modern life, I guess.

I would vote
for ALMOST any Republican over Hillary!!!
I don't want EIGHT more years of Clinton crimewaves and I'm sure Arkansas was glad to see them go as well!

Whom To Vote For
It is Friday morning and I am still trying to make up my mind, But In S.C. The republicans must not vote for McCain. He has done more to hurt the republican party than most liberals.
I like Thompson the best and he is a true conservative, Now does he really want to be President? Huckabee Just might Be the one but is
he to what? Mitt I like because he has business
sense.
Tonight I am going back over all my notes, then
get up in the morning and go vote. I just hope whomever I vote for doesn't put a democrat in office.
Robert From S.C.

Sir Michael; Rick
SM: Thanks for the definitional clarification. The diachroncy of political language is an interesting study indeed.

Rick: Excellent analysis of The Fed's "solution" to bank runs. Our Dear Leaders have effectively solved the problem of bank solvency by allowing our banking system to operate in a state of insolvency. Kind of shrewd. The U.S. citizen pays an annual tax of 3 - 10% to a counterfeiting cartel for deposits insuranced by unfettered debasing power. Not the good deal it might seem.

The CFR, in and of itself, does not bother me; it is merely one of many clubs for like-minded individuals. The insidiousness, though, occurs at the intersection of this group's globalist aspirations and our monetary system. The politically connected get first use of limitless amounts of currency; government, debt and taxation grow as a result while individual sovereignty wanes; the honest worker, whose hands are last to touch to magically created cash, is rewarded with lost purchasing power, false free-trade and pilfered savings. Add to this legal tender laws, which render him powerless to stop any of it.

Sowell Says Fred is Real Conservative?
Many conservatives expected a basic signal out of Fred that all conservatives shouls have: hard work and productivity. He is no conservative if he cannot campaign more energetically than this. That is like folks saying Romney is a fiscal conservative when he spends money on his campaign like a drunken Democrat and taxes his own pockets to do so. Actions speak louder than words.

Funny Comments
Sorry, I for one hope Anthony Thomas keeps responding and commenting as his comments provide vast amusement and outright laughter that he seriously believes anything he is saying. I can't find a much better nominee for poster child of a Liberal Democratic Patsy. Can You? Let him attack all he wants. Who cares?

I agree with the main point here and that is as much as we may hate to, how can you not vote to keep any of the current crop of Dem's out of the Oval Office? I had to grit my teeth to vote for Bush but the alternative was to hideous to consider. The attempt to send a message to Republicans to be more conservative and stand up back fired big time and they all seem even more spineless than ever. I wish we could wipe the slate and start over but term limits somehow never get passed.

And let's get one thing right here. The Federal Reserve is a private banking consortium with a government appointed "adviser." It is not now and never has been a government agency or department.

Election dilema or voting dilema
As I see it the dilema is in our minds. We have allowed the liberal news media to tell us what to think, who to think, and how to think them. They have told us who is electable and we have been gullible enough to believe them. I believe the real dilema is having the courage to step out in faith and vote your conscience. I will not compromise any more. I cannot in good conscience vote for Romney, Guiliani, Huckabee, Thompson or McCain. They have all failed at least one of the according to my conscience and what I believe ie right. I will not compromise on life, national security, or Character. Will you join me? I will be looking very carefully at Alan Keyes. I encourage you to visit his website:
alankeyes.com
and read my blog on Voting your conscience:

God bless you all until next time,
Ephesians 4:15

Unbelievable!
"The attempt to send a message to Republicans to be more conservative and stand up back fired big time and they all seem even more spineless than ever. I wish we could wipe the slate and start over but term limits somehow never get passed."

With thinking like this, you wonder WHY?

You don't vote them out!! That's why. You keep buying the line "I MUST vote for them because the alternative is too bad." Thus, they stay in office.

You get what you vote for. You vote for a bad republican, you GET a bad republican.

The only reason it backfired is because CONSERVATIVES have been too spineless.

I will NOT endorse Republicans that act like democrats. And to all who attack this position: Eat me! If you had the balls to stand up for your principles, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Primary Dilemmas
As usual, Dr. Sowell is right. We only hurt ourselves -- and the nation -- if we cannot support one of the Republicans. The Democrats -- no matter which of the three -- would take us in a very different and dangerous direction. Why cut off your nose to spite your face? As for my own leanings, I am supporting McCain, the only candidate who can beat the Dems. He is a war hero, a lifeong Republican and even though I have not always liked his stands, I know that he told the truth. He is pro-life and his foreign policy experience is second to none.

Does being right matter
Fred is right Duncan hunter is right. So is my uncle Harry. None of them is electable. No matter how much we wish they were. Huckabee has come out of no where to challenge for the lead without money.I think he is attractive ,and conservative enough to win . He certainly has a quick mind. He is practicle and independent enough of the powers that be.He gets my vote.

tim_cuchullaine
I could not have said that better myself. I'm going to copy here again what you said, because (1) I neglected to mention it myself earlier and (2) it is very crucial to the understanding of how the wealth of holdings based on current discretionary paper is distributed from those holders to the first borrowers of the new paper (and of course to the great benefit of the lenders):

"The politically connected get first use of limitless amounts of currency; government, debt and taxation grow as a result while individual sovereignty wanes; the honest worker, whose hands are last to touch to magically created cash, is rewarded with lost purchasing power, false free-trade and pilfered savings. Add to this legal tender laws, which render him powerless to stop any of it."

Brilliant pithy description. Hats off to you!

The candidates
Even though you may have to hold your nose to do it, vote for a Republican, if only to deny the White House to the Democrats (most likely Hillary). Failure to vote may make you feel better briefly, but you will have four years to regret it. A lot of harm can be done in four years.
If you do not care about anything else, think of the type of Supreme Court Judge that will be chosen by one of the Democrats. Even if the Congress remains split (and it may become more Democratic-that is, liberal), the President still is the one who nominates judges. Activist Judges can bypass the legislative branch and legislate from the bench.
Also think of the failed liberal policies. They will not only continue, but new ones will be devised.

In any event I think Paul & Perot come from the same stock, 'SPOLIERS' and that Paul parrots Perot. Paulists need to find a REAL candidate. The primaries show he's finished in the primaries but I wouldn't put it past him to jump ship to the Independent Party WHEN not chosen by the true Republicans. Quotes similar from Perot & Paul: "When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." -Ron Paul" (Yes, I would call it Paulist Syndrome) "War has rules, mud wrestling has rules - politics has no rules." -Ross Perot another famous quote: "I am absolutely opposed to a national ID card. This is a total contradiction of what a free society is all about. The purpose of government is to protect the secrecy and the privacy of all individuals, not the secrecy of government. We don't need a national ID card." -Ron Paul

On the other hand...
We have a viable candidate in Fred Thompson.
CNN interviewed him and he ignored their dogging him as usual with diplomacy. He didn't even get mad when they repeatedly misquoted him. Here is the link:
http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl =5969254&ch=4226716&src=news

He told the CNN reporter that one way to keep jobs in the US is to LOWER federal government taxing of corporations, a very sound idea.

Then in the January 10th Rep. Debate he showed up the other candidates:
"This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future," Thompson said at the debate. "On the one hand, you have the Reagan revolution. You have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security. On the other hand, you have the direction that Gov. Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies. He believes we have an arrogant foreign policy in the tradition of 'blame America first.' He believes that Guantanamo should be closed down and those enemy combatants brought to the United States to find their way into the court system eventually. He believes in taxpayer-funded programs for illegals, as he did in Arkansas. He has the endorsement of the National Education Association, and the NEA said it was because of his opposition to vouchers. HE said he would sign a bill that would ban smoking nationwide. So much for federalism. So much for states' rights. So much for individual rights. That's not the model of the Reagan coalition - that's the model of the Democratic Party."

Anthony Thomas - Give me a break!
Hillary Clinton is running on her Senate career? Just what IS her senate career and how does that qualify her for being President?

You know that she is running on her time with Bill in the White House. She has said as much on the campaign trail.

It's debatable if she will govern like Bill? Tell me exactly how she has differentiated herself from the Bill and Hill years?

Why would I expect Bush 43 to govern like Bush 41? Bush 43 played no key role in Bush 41's administration let alone the co-president as Hillary would like you to believe of her participation with Bill.

Get over Bush already!

Stupidity and the gods
Don't get discouraged, Sir Michael. Remember what Friedrich von Schiller said, "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."

Your lectures have that edge of humor that make them entertaining.

What would we do without your torch in the darkness of the cave as we move toward where we think is the light?

str8 talk
Ron Paul opposes a national ID card and for this you in turn seem to oppose him. Is government your nanny?

Concerning drug laws, our elected officials have no place telling ADULTS what they may and may not ingest. Nor is it their just prerogative to take away your property for redistribution to somebody stupid enough to use drugs that are presently illicit.

What has the "War on Drugs" accomplished? The sight of junkies rotting in the street, inheriting the consequence of their actions, would do more to dissuade prospective users than billions of dollars of futility and government.

Absent the welfare state, drug laws would be difficult to justify.

sorry about the double post
I don't think my ramblings are that important. Hopefully someone can remove the extra posting.

You're kidding, right?
Dr. Sowell,

I'm astounded that you can claim that Fred Thompson is a conservative at all, let alone "the only conservative in the race". The man voted for the "Patriot" act, which is the most egregious increase of federal power since FDR placed Japanese Americans in concentration camps.

Ron Paul's voting record over decades has been exemplary, and I urge you to look it up and confirm this for yourself. He's the candidate who put the issue of sound money back on the national agenda, which is something that far too many of us had given up as a lost cause back in 1971.

Fred Thompson was working for Richard Nixon when he made his disastrous decision to abandon the gold standard altogether and impose wage and price controls to prevent us from coping with the inflation that the federal government and the banks perpetrated on us.

R-word, C-word, L-word
Our radio talking heads, who imagine themselves the heads of some "conservative movement", and their obsession with their political youth and a fantasy version of the successful candidate they supported back then will LOSE this election for the Republican Party. They are enamored of the power they had in defeating a Republican President, blithely unaware that they "won" only because they tipped the scales towards the Democrats. Their most precious victory on the Supreme Court ignores the fact had Harriet Myers been seated Kennedy would have retired.

ABC is how George Bush got elected. Then he:

-- reneged on every central conservative principle,

-- drove us into an illegal and disastrous war,

--made the dollar worth a dime,

-- embraced "national greatness, big-government conservatism,"

--perpetuated the Washington insiders

-- fattened the trough-dwellers with war corruption (at least 100 billion can't be accounted for)

... and now you tell us, "Be afraid of HILLARY?"

This is fraud. Funny how the establishment goons always give the back of their hand to Ron Paul, the only honest, logical, coherent, and conservative candidate.

"Ron Paul can't win", screams the establishment. That's right. If anyone else wins, R or D, they'll be fine. The trough will keep on giving.

If Ron Paul wins, they lose.
