Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It was not that long ago that the big political question was how Rudolph Giuliani would do against Hillary Clinton in the November election.

The Iowa caucus votes have made that question sound like ancient history, if not science fiction. The results of the Iowa caucus are only a small part of the story of this election year but their implications are significant.

One implication that reaches well beyond politics is that a state that is 95 percent white gave its biggest vote total to a black man.

More Iowa women voted for Obama than for Hillary. So much for the "race, class and gender" mantra among the intelligentsia.

So much also for the "inevitable" or "invincible" candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Perhaps the biggest story out of Iowa is that 71 percent of Democrats voted against Hillary.

The next biggest story is that no one in either party won a majority. It is still a wide-open race in both parties.

As for the Republicans, Mike Huckabee won by 8 percentage points in a state where 60 percent of the Republican voters were evangelicals.

However surprising his victory, it was not massive by any means and the large evangelical factor will not be there in most other states, even among Republican voters-- much less in the general election in November.

With all the media attention to the various political rivalries in both parties, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that all of this is ultimately about choosing a President of the United States.

The question of what kind of President each candidate would make is infinitely more important than all the "horse race" handicapping that dominates the media.

By far the best presentation as a candidate, among all the candidates in both parties, is that of Barack Obama. But if he actually believes even half of the irresponsible nonsense he talks, he would be an utter disaster in the White House.

Among the Democrats, the choice between John Edwards and Barack Obama depends on whether you prefer glib demagoguery in its plain vanilla form or spiced with a little style and color.

The choice between both of them and Hillary Clinton depends on whether you prefer male or female demagoguery.

Among the Republicans, there are misgivings about the track record of each of the candidates, especially those who have shown what Thorstein Veblen once called "a versatility of convictions."

There are fewer reasons for misgivings about Fred Thompson's track record in the Senate but more reason to be concerned about what his unfocussed and lackluster conduct of his campaign might portend for his performance in the White House.

When it comes to personal temperament, Governor Romney would rate the highest for his even keel, regardless of what events are swirling around him, with Rudolph Giuliani a close second.

Temperament is far more important for a President than for a candidate. A President has to be on an even keel 24/7, for four long years, despite crises that can break out anywhere in the world at any time.

John McCain trails the pack in the temperament department, with his volatile, arrogant, and abrasive know-it-all attitude. His track record in the Senate is full of the betrayals of Republican supporters that have been the party's biggest failing over the years and its Achilles heel politically.

The elder President Bush's betrayal of his "no new taxes" pledge was the classic example, but the current President Bush's attempt to get amnesty for illegal aliens, with Senator McCain's help, was more of the same.

President Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon probably cost him the 1976 election and cost the country the disastrous Carter years.

McCain's betrayals include not only the amnesty bill but also the McCain-Feingold bill that violated the First Amendment for the illusion of "taking money out of politics." His back-door deal with Democrats on judicial nominations also pulled the rug out from under his party leaders in the Senate.

The White House is not the place for a loose cannon.

No Surprise
Sowell proves once again that he is one of the best political writers and thinkers. if only we could find another Sowell and replace Medved.

Edwards
John Edwards is sniffing the wind and positioning himself for the role of Obama's veep.

I am not surprised that a . . .
state with a largely white population gave the most votes to a black man. Maybe I'm crazy, but I just don't see the American people as racist. It just isn't there like the Democrats wish it were there.

Colin Powell would probably be the president right now if he had had true conservative principles and ran a campaign accordingly. He was most likely more Republican than Democrat due to his steller military credentials, but he then sided with Democrats on social issues thus alienating him from the Republican base. He had nowhere to go as neither party could truly count him as one of their own.

People didn't vote for Al Sharpton because he's a phony and a charlatan; his skin color had nothing to do with it. Obama is the real deal and is a very appealing candidate, until you look for substance. Substance doesn't matter to Democrats as they focus on "identity politics" and Obama is the perfect person for that. Another factor here is that people are sick and tired of the Clintons. Everyone, including Democrats, wants them to just go away. Hillary not winning the women vote is devastating and very revealing.

You disappoint me Dr Sowell
no mention of Duncan Hunter or Ron Paul.

Obama is more white than black.
50/50 by blood, but 100% WASP upbringing.

Also, his father actually came from actual Africa, the Sudan. He does not belong to the afro- or African-American subculture, except maybe by adoption around the fringes as an adult.

Still, point taken that the skin shade didn't put off the Iowans. Which is not to say they mightn't have been put off by him if he had displayed any of the traits of the African-American subculture, such as an accent, even as slight as Alan Keyes'.

Cyclist
Do you think that when Colin Powell said he had decided against running for president "because I don't have the fire in the belly" he was just making excuses because neither party wanted him? I disagree; I think both parties wanted him. When we look at what we put ALL the candidates through, I don't blame anyone for not wanting to do it. Also I read somewhere that Powell's wife strongly did not want him to run as she feared he would be assassinated as the first black candidate. A fear shared, by the way, by Mrs Obama, which is why O has had Secret Service protection for months already. I would not be a bit surprised if O were assassinated. The people who love guns, love killing, love to talk about guns and shooting, are the same ones who oppose Obama.

Obama and no mention of Ron paul

I don't get it, Obama was raised by his white grandparents in Hawaii, his father is Kenyan, there's no African-American in Obama's family or culture, and yet he has a Mac-Daddy edge to his speech inflections and mannerisms, albeit studied and toned down.

I'm almost dead certain that if you scratch Obama, out will come the full Mac-Daddy along with Jesse, Al, and Spike Lee.

No mention of Ron Paul as usual, it's unfortunate that Paul comes across as a Woody Allen type nerd. He should take some stee-lo lessons from Obama and put a little flavah in his inflections and a little swagger in his hips.

And so...what is the best choice?
A demagoguery or a loose cannon?

Mr. Sowell does not give any hint to which this article is really lacking of.

The descriptions he describes are pretty much well known. Given that it is virtually impossible to eject a new candidate to the race that could potentially win the general elections, what we need is a wisdom to choose the lesser of two evils.

Prezzes
A loose cannon may not be the best choice, nonetheless a president should be a cannon. Strength of character is part of the gig. Further, we don't have a perfect candidate in this bunch, and McCain's misvotes and misopinions through his life have been matched in full by those of Huckabee, Romney, and Giuliani. McCain has shown the right stuff at times in his life, and he's the best electable candidate.

The other poster was right about Paul. His persona hurts him. Even a small man can have the aura of authority, and, unfortunately, Paul lacks it. I do trust him to act well in office, I'm just not sure about leading well.

Perfect world, Paul. Voting world, McCain.

Post^It
How about enough character to actually protect and defend the Constitution? What other parts of the Bill of Rights will McCain find himself willing to destroy. Of course he won't do it by himself, his good friends in the Democrat party will be there for him.

Given the squealing the left has done about Bush destroying our freedoms isn't it funny that the media is in love with the guy that raped the First Amendment?

lilly
You are truly a moron. To oppose the Liberal agenda of Obama and to think his winning the presidency would be bad for the country is to love killing. That has to rank as one of the dumbest things you have ever said and that says a lot given your record.

"A versatility of convictions"
What a great expression! How perfectly descriptive of all the candidates, with the lone exception of the consistent, unwavering Ron Paul.

TruLib
I didn't see anything in Dr. Sowell's column about people who love killing. Is Lilly on the right thread? Has someone written about serial murderers or something? Or is some troll just demonstratig their ability to read minds again?

Minor quibble
Another great column, but I will disagree with one thing. Ford pardoning Nixon did not cost him the election. Nixon cost him the election just like Clinton cost Gore the election in 2000. If the Lamocrats had run a dog as a candidate he would have been elected. Oh, they did run a dog didn’t they.

Lilly, I'm disappointed
For someone with your background and education, you really are in a bad place. You again assume that because I like guns and shooting and disagree with your politics, I want to KILL YOU? I'm not the ogre you think I am; I'm kind, loving, gentle and reasonable. Just ask my wife, or most of her friends, who without being jealous or envious, are happy she has found a man who can be the God centered leader of our home.

I don't wish you ill, only for you to just take your unfounded fears and go hide under your bed, or maybe retire to a re-education camp with some of your nice, liberal friends who hold similar viewpoints. You will never be persuaded to my point of view and I absolutely know enough not to accept your's.

You THINK my politics are twisted - I KNOW your's are. The reason I'm sure of this is because I know many people just like you (some are even my friends-we don't discuss politics much), I doubt very much that you know anyone of my political stripe, nor would you be open to meeting any like me because of your strong prejudices against what you think we believe.

God bless you anyway, and I always pray for you and your kind to turn away from worship of self and the flesh and step into the light. You'll "see" and feel much better.

5 stars, Dr. Sowell
Your intelligence and uncommon, common sense is dripping from this one. Once again my mouth is agape with how really, really smart you are.

Savage99
Lilly posted her belief that those that 'love killing' are the people opposed to Obama. She is worried he will be assassinated by the gun nuts. Guns are evil, gun nuts are evil, Obama is good, evil hates good, gun nuts hate Obama. Logical progression in Lilly's world.

When those Iranian boats come back
who do you want giving the orders? Sponge Bob Obama Pants, who cannot believe that the Muslims would lie to him, or John McCain, leading the charge with the sword raised on high?

If the world ever returns to the kind of peacetime in which Iranian boats do not tug on Supermans cape, when the biggest problem we have is gum chewing on line, we can affordd to take a flyer on a guy who actually makes Sponge Bob look like a great thinker. Until then, bleating about Unity should be left in the campaigns for class president. This is not a contest for Mr. Hottie and should not be decided by gyrating YouTube babes.

Cant we all, like, grow up?

lilly wrote:

Perhaps it's me, but I almost sense a desire to see that tragedy come to pass in that comment. Just so lilly can self-righteously, smugly gloat in being right about us gun-loving, hunting, redneck throwbacks to the 1850s.

I'm curious, lilly. Are you a vegetarian?

Bah, humbug
Many years ago, I groused to my husband that if Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey were the best we had to offer for the office of president, we were in trouble.

The current field of candidates makes these two look like giants.

lilly/troll
This is what lilly and the other trolls sent from or venturing from the Kos or huffnpuff. They come over here and try to spin a particular topic to irritate us into an arguement so that we lose sight of the original topic. They redirect the subject to a position that they believe they can take the moral high ground and make the rest of us look ignorant. They know they cannot actually chang our minds. They are just here to stir uus up.
"THEY" are the likes of lilly roberta hallyboy and others. I know their ignorance is sometimes impossible to ignore. But we will be better off the more we can ignore her and her friends.

Fred Thompson
Fred Thompson is a slower speaker than Romney who can rapidly name the issues. However, when we slow down a bit - which is hard for anyone north of the Mason Dixon line we will find a man who has the temperment, integrity, experience and calm that we need to nagigate through the coming tough times.

Leave Lily alone.
Her Birkenstocks are a little tight this morning. Probably a gastro back-up over Hillary's tears.

Sick Lilly
This old biddy is proving herself truly dangerous to society with her increasingly depraved rants. It was "intellectuals" such as she who fomented the Russian Revolution in 1917 and it was "intellectuals" such as she who took over Germany in the 1930's. Both groups ended up running the concentration camps and gulags. Lilly once mentioned she was a teacher. The people who hired her should be tried for a capital crime.

Lilly
I thought that liberals despised "labels" and that they do not stereotype people, but judge them on their merits, with benevolent tolerance for diversity and all points of view. Yet you "connect the dots" between "people who love guns" and the possible assassination of Barack Obama by these people simply because they may oppose him politically.

You judge, Lilly, whether that is hypocrisy or not (another one of the sins that liberals and Dems purportedly despise).

By the way, rather than speculate about what some redneck, conservative, racist, gun freak MIGHT do to Obama, why not look at real assassins and wanna bes, and other extremely violent groups that were politically motivated? Were Oswald, Sirhan B. Sirhan, John Hinckley, Sarah Jane Moore, and Squeaky Fromme right wing gun nuts? How about the Weathermen, SDS, Black Panthers and the SLA? Why not try and connect those dots and see if there are some common threads?

I am disappointed
in this article. I usually agree with Dr Sowell 100%, but to call John McCain a loose cannon is wrong.

None of the dems running are even remotely qualified to be POTUS, naive is the best one can say about them.

I can see Romney or Rudy for their executive skills, but this election could very well determine whether we survive as a country if the islamo threat isn't destroyed. If any of these animals get a nuke into this country chaos will ensue. The only guy running that I trust to make the right calls on the most important issue of the time is McCain.

I come from a military background, there are guys in charge and there are leaders, leaders are those who you would follow into the gates of hell because you believe they will make the right calls and you won't get killed because they are incompetant ticket punchers.

McCain is a man that I would go to war with anytime...the military types here know what I mean.

I trust the country will see that we must protect America first, anything else is irrelevant.

Lilly
Just when I think you've bottomed out, you continue to break new ground.

"The people who love guns, love killing, love to talk about guns and shooting, are the same ones who oppose Obama."

Since when do gang members, criminals, inner-city street urchins and hip-hop "artists" oppose Obama? They're the heart and soul of the democrat party!

Scary
I am trying to find anything at all that would qualify Obama to be President. Did he have a newspaper route? Has he chaired a committee in the senate? Junior Acheivement maybe? I have to agree with Dr. Sowell, about Obama's ideas but it is scary he would have a Democratic congress with many people that think like he does, all it takes now a days is one political boss to bring the whole party along (sad). I have been around and around on candidates and my conclusion is, I don't like any of them very much but could live with some better than others. Maybe one or two of them could got to a leadership conference, show some guts and be a leader not a polls taker.

As usual email me if you like, barrym@tds.net

As I was cleaning my gun...
...and reading Townhall,my mind was wandering.I was trying to determine who to shoot next. All of a sudden up pops Lilly!!!

Be afraid,Lilly! Be very afraid!

Washington is broken and corrupt
OldRelayer: How about graduating at the top of his class at Harvard Law? That is a little harder than delivering newspapers. How about turning down big jobs on Wall Street to work with urban youth in Chicago. How about passing a law on political ethics in Illinois. But best of all is the fact that the establishment didn't back him. He is rallying the youth of America to have hope again and bring new voters into the process. Ron Paul does the same thing on the Republican side, but the republicans will make Dr. Paul a laughing stock and his followers will turn away from the GOP forever. Once we add a recession to the mix the Republicans will be lucky to keep 40 seats in the senate. Like it or not the country is turning liberal again.

McCain?
This vet says "no" to McCain. I am very much interested in knowing where the leader will lead me. I am very much interested in a leader who will not abandon the troops when the going gets tough. I honor his service, but I think Commander-in-Chief is too high a rank.

"Mavericks" are permissible, even valuable, in legislative jobs. They are not so hot as executive, who needs to get people to work together. That's hard to do when you feel the need to wear kelvar to protect against a sudden knife in the back.

That said, McCain is preferable to ANY of the Democrats.

Fred Thompson is the best choice. I read his columns right here for months.

PS. RE: Lilly - don't feed the trolls! You can't reason with the irrational, so you are just giving them the attention they seek. "Consider the source" as your mother used to say.

Lilly, your reactionary ignorance knows
no bounds.

First, Secret Service regularly provides protection to every viable candidate for the presidency. It would have been highly unusual for Obama to receive that protection.

Second, you write:

"It's not street criminals who post on townhall that they are fully armed and prepared to shoot people. It's not thugs who, on townhall, love to describe their extensive collections of ordnance."

Please note that it is not the TH bloggers who DO the criminal acts you describe. That is invariably accomplished by the thugs and criminals you libs are fond of protecting.

Third, You libs have absolutely no sense of humor. Do you really think that TH bloggers would go out and shoot something simply because they are upset by a posting? Deer season typically lasts only a few weeks each year. Why would anyone announce that they are about to break the law?

No, Obama's risk is from liberal thugs and Hillary (intentional redundancy).

correction
"....highly unusual NOT to have rec'd protection".

The Cyclist -- Colin Powell
"Colin Powell would probably be the president right now if he had had true conservative principles and ran a campaign accordingly."

Pah.

Colin Powell would be president right now if he had wanted the job.

Both parties tried to woo him, but he's just never wanted to be president. Too much hassle, too little privacy, too much et ceteras. Don't forget, he's already had tons of hours in the Oval Office in both Democrat and Republican administrations. Unlike some contenders who may not know what they're in for, he's already seen what that life is like, up close and personal.

acceptreality
poor delusional lilly. She looks at the present and sees boogermen from the past plotting to assisinate poor oblahma. Exactly why would anyone wantr to turn anyone into another victim. But that is the current mantra of the dims/libs/socialists. When they fail to win the war of ideas they resort to old tale of divide and conquer. But if the dims were truly concerned about society they would dismantle their plantation of entitlement and enaqbling victims and instead push for people to take charge of their own lives without looking to govt to solve the problems the govt itself creates. Alas the lilly types only understand the govt punishing the earners through an unfair tax system to reward the losers the dims continue to enable. In lilly's world the govt saves everybody from everything but fails to understand the resultant cost to society

on Secret Service Protection
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,264982,00.html

quoth:

It's not unusual for high-profile candidates to get Secret Service detail, analysts say.

Bill Sammon, a FOX News contributor who has covered several presidential candidates, said as candidates get more popular and well-known, increased security becomes necessary.

"It's a sign of the strength of a campaign," Sammon said. "When the Secret Service starts to show up, it's one of those lines you have crossed."

If a candidate is not a serious contender with little or no following in the polls, they won't get the same protection as other high-profile candidates, Sammon said.

"I think from the Secret Service standpoint, they look at it from a perspective from balancing, not just throwing taxpayer money to anybody," Sammon said.

Bob Beckel, a FOX News contributor and Democratic strategist, said it's common for candidates to get extra protection, but it's a new trend for them to get the security detail earlier in the campaign.

Oh, Lilly, Seriously, do you believe
anything you say? No one else does.

BTW --
According to CNN, the Secret Service anticipates spending $110 million protecting candidates.

"You elect them -- we protect them. That's my motto," Coyer [a 24-year veteran, now a deputy assistant director who oversees manpower issues] says with a smile and a shrug when asked about the stress of Secret Service work.

Fred Thompson is the one!
I couldn't agree more with Mr. Sowell in his comments on the various candidates. I too wish Fred spoke in a faster, more clarified cadence, but what he says is right on the money, and I'm voting for Fred this very day, in NH.
I urge all who share his views to do the same.

I will sit it out in the general, if McCain wins, so we better hope that doesn't happen, as Obama is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Perfection doesn't exist
There is no perfect candidate and we wouldn't agree on who it is if there was.
One thing we can be sure of, the Dems will go for flashy. I am concerned about the mesmerizing voice of Obama, and fear more than a few otherwise smart folks are going to be lulled by the voice and not pay attention to the lack of substance behind it.
McCain would be far and away my choice IF, and it's a big if, he didn't have such a temper, although it might be good to have him toss a few of the international jerks out a window instead of placating them. Also he is the same age I am and I cannot imagine going thru a grueling campaign and then trying to lead a country, thru all of the bad feelings. Make no mistake the libs will be absolutely apoplectic if they lose the presidency again, they feel entitled even if they really do not have a substantive candidate to offer.

Lilly's reaction makes sense...
...because deep down liberals are so often consumed with hate... even hate to the point where they would wish death upon their opponents. I've seen it too many times. Lilly simply assumes everyone is as mentally ill as she, being a liberal, is.

Regarding Lilly and Other Liberals
I wish you folks would quit wasting bandwidth chiding Lilly and other liberals all the time with these "cute" little one-line ad hominems you're so fond of.

Take a look at the postings already up before you post. If you see a half dozen insults already posted, consider the job of being nasty to Lilly has already been accomplished.

Now if you have something of substance to say, by all means, get on board and say it. Lilly (and others) need to hear well-reasoned counter-points to their liberal indoctrinations.

But it's getting tiresome to keep seeing all these little one-line insults that are devoid of meaningful content. Leave it on the playground, people.

More Romney promotion
Romney is the calmest? He gets upset every time someone brings up his record. He snears, he gives dirty looks. He is not Presidential. And of course attack McCain because he beat Romney, which he wasn't supposed to do. I see a big difference between people who earn a paycheck and columnists who write for townhall. The voters must too.

I'm not talking about class warfare like David Limbaugh, as he misrepresented Huckabee's stance. Huckabee takes a more conservative stance than Romney and has a less liberal background than Romney.

Koran
Seems I read somewhere oblama took his oath of office in illinois on a copy of the koran....not a bible. Anybody know aboput this.
Lilly forget it.

O'Bama's threat is from within
An earlier comment from AcceptReality is probably closer to the truth. O'Bama's threat is more from Hillary and her cohorts than from Conservatives or Gun Owners. How many people have died who have been a threat to the Clintons since their days in Arkansas? Way too many to be coincidental. Hillary's cohorts will be the ones who will do anything to protect Hillary and put her where she will do the most good for themselves, and that includes killing. I wonder how many people think these statements are full of crap. At least 49% of the Country, I would guess, based upon the last two Federal Elections, and they are those who voted for Democrats. The same voters who have demonstrated a lack of intelligence by voting for Socialists who will be the death of the U.S.A. as we know it. A Clinton, O'Bama, Edwards, Gore, or Kerry as POTUS would be disasterous for this Country.

UncleB
I agree with you 100%. I used to naively believe that we could discuss issues with our regular leftist visitors and maybe even save one of them. However, I’ve learned that they are not here to actually discuss anything, or to even consider any facts or evidence that contradicts their predetermined world views. As difficult as it often as, ignoring their ridiculous statements is probably the correct decision for all of us.

"A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion."
Proverbs 18

O'Bama's a JOKE
Yea, I said it. O'Bama's a JOKE, however, the joke is on us. We allowed the Liberal's to take over Academia and they have poisoned the minds of our Young, who follow this Socialist, thinking he is America's next Savior. NOT. I noticed that not one of these O'Bama fans can detail the issues and defend these issues against a Conservative arguement or against the facts that are readily available. The real facts show plainly that the Democrats are America's Greatest Enemy and Threat to our Liberties and Freedoms granted by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This is NO JOKE, but unforttunately the TRUTH. Review the actions of our latest Democratic Congress and it will provide the truth to this argument.

Another egg by the bitter old man.
What is "glib demagoguery"??? Is that just another cute, million dollar phrase to describe liberalism?

Instead of taking political side shots at Obama and Edwards, why doesn’t Sowell just intellectually combat their political platforms with honest debate? If Obama’s political platform is "glib demagoguery", what the heck has Bush policies been over the past 7 years? Why does Sowell engage in childish name calling meant for pseudo intellectuals? This brand of politics is soooo over, and is a prime example why the Republican party is an utter mess, can’t select a front runner, and will lose the general election in 2008. In a state (IOWA) that went red in 2004 for Bush, over twice as many voters showed up for the Democratic primaries than the Republican primaries. Not a good sign for the fading GOP, that loses influence, and relevance with each passing moment. See you in November 08!

Fred Thompson
Old Fred doesn't seem to really want the Presidency. That ought to make him the front runner; all of the other crooks want the power and glory- Fred seems to want to serve the country in a time of need. I was going to write in for Ron Paul since I am SO SICK of the games they play in DC but I may vote for Fred. He would at least get me to go vote. Neither Mitt, Rudy, Mike or McCain could pry me away from my kids. No more RINOs, no more CINOs, no more holding my nose and pulling for the lesser of two evils. I'll see Clinton in the WH before another Democrat-lite. That being said, Dr. Sowell is wicked smart and a great writer. Lilly- now I am a redneck, racist, assassin because I like guns? I think guns and shooting them are great fun and constitute family time. Properly handling firearms teaches responsibility and how to earn trust. When I got my CCP I had to resist that urge to rob a liquor store and bust a few caps in some dudes that ticked me off. I also didn't buy a pickup truck with a Confederate flag and Yosemite Sam mudflaps. Good lord, woman-do you read the tripe that you write? As a lib, aren't you supposed to fight against labels and sweeping generalizations? Or is that only when they are put upon a recognized and approved "aggrieved people"? Honestly, use some logic next time.

sowell right again
i think he has captured the essence of the candidates. i think thompson is the best. he is overall the most conservative. he is trustworthy and does not bear the "maverick" moniker which can be loosely translated as "backstabber".

mccain is an egomaniac who is only interested in himself. his history bears this out. he will do whatever it takes to make himself look good to the media. why all of the love-ins with the dems? whay did he carry their water?

mccain even had the audacity to take credit for the surge! wow, and i thought that general petraus and the boots on the ground had done something.

nope it was mccain. just mccain. wow, he kinda reminds me of al gore.

libs
Thers a reason that education majors are the dumbest on campus.... lilly

Icedog
I do have to give credit to Critical Bill. He usually was able to write with logic and facts and never ran off a string of wild accusations such as Silly Lilly has just done.

Icedog/Uncle B
"I used to naively believe that we could discuss issues with our regular leftist visitors and maybe even save one of them. However, I’ve learned that they are not here to actually discuss anything or to even consider any facts or evidence that contradicts their predetermined world views"

Please, get over yourselves. That's just a lazy copout. You know very well that there are plenty of liberal posters who argue from reasoned point of views on TH. You guys just can't stand having YOUR PREDETERMINED WORLDVIEWS, and beliefs crushed with logics and facts that conflict with your political ideology. Sorry for the cliche, but If you can't stand the heat, get out the kitchen.

Anthony, I suspect the slams about
liberal posters are aimed at Lilly, primarily. She seems to constantly insert her supposed "eye witness" accounts of murderous rednecks on the rampage, that just seems to gall those of us who know and love the supposed gun toting knuckle draggers she wants to condemn.

We are not knuckle dragging murderers, and we kinda resent her constant attempts to tell us she was raised among us, and knows our ways so well.

I, for one, am often happy to hear both sides of the issue, and if you have a reason to believe that Obama would be a great president, I'd love to hear it.

Frankly, I'd be hard pressed to tell you one thing he stands for, other than "Hope."

I only hope his "hope" is not for the abandonment of the US as a sovereign nation. Which is pretty much what I'm afraid he's thinking of, when he says Hope.

A thomas
"THEY" are the likes of lilly roberta hallyboy and others. I know their ignorance is sometimes impossible to ignore. But we will be better off the more we can ignore her and her friends

I should have added A Thomas to my list of lilly's "friends"
And you sir should get over YOURSELF.

Too Cyclist
I would not be a bit surprised if O were assassinated. The people who love guns, love killing, love to talk about guns and shooting, are the same ones who oppose Obama.

All too apparent.
Sowell prefers Romney. He is entitled to his opinion. And, Romney is bright, articulate, could probably bring a certain competency and acumen to the whitehouse that now is so obviously lacking.

But, in my humble opinion, Romney embodies the policies of G.W. Bush on most domestic and foreign policy issues, as does Giuliani, especially on foreign policy.

And that is a loser.

If anything, Iowa, and probably New Hampshire today, will both signal that the nation wants change. The past, especially the policies of G.W. Bush on foreign policy, and the supposedly inevitable Clinton "coronation", are both being soundly rejected by voters who prefer Huckabee and Obama in Iowa, and probable victory of Obama and McCain in New Hampshire, with Huckabee slightly behind a second-place Romney.

The nation wants "change". It may not be able to specifically articulate what particular policies it embraces, but it definitely desires a new direction, a turning away from Clintons, and G.W. Bush. The American people instinctively know our nation is on the wrong track.

Iraq and a souring economy have taken their toll on Bush policies, and hence those who are running on his legacy, while Hillary is seen as the embodiment of the democrat party establishment's "pulling of the strings" in determining whom the candidate will be.

People are rejecting both.

Get over yourself, Anthony Thomas
That peach you title
"Another egg by the bitter old man."
is certainly not one argued from "reasoned point views" and is certainly not an example of "logic and facts." In fact it is exactly the kind of post Icedog/Uncle B referred to: nothing but name calling and critcism because you don't like what Dr. Sowell has said.

If it's not too much trouble for you, look again at "What Does It Mean?" and see if you can understand the subject and the writer's points. This column is his opinion about what the results of the Iowa Caucas results mean, not a defense or attack on any candidate's political platform. It is an *opinion* piece, not an analysis of anyone's platform. He states what he thinks about the candidates and what the results of the vote mean.

For analysis of candidates and platforms, find a different article. Try to stick to the subject under discussion and keep your straw men and other irrevelancies to yourself.

From available evidence so far, you don't compare well with Dr. Sowell. Not that many do, but you do have the unmitigated gall to post your nastiness and in the very same message ask for reasoned discussion.

Liberal Hypocrites

"That peach you title Another egg by the bitter old man."is certainly not one argued from "reasoned point views" and is certainly not an example of "logic and facts."

Actually it is argued from a reasoned point of view. What do you think Sowell was doing when he said the following:

"Among the Democrats, the choice between John Edwards and Barack Obama depends on whether you prefer glib demagoguery in its plain vanilla form or spiced with a little style and color."

That’s why I asked what was “glib demagoguery”?

He continues by attacking Hillary by saying:

"the choice between both of them and Hillary Clinton depends on whether you prefer male or female demagoguery."

He's calling the top three Democratic candidates political demagogues without providing any legitimate facts to back it up. That was my point , and why I stated earlier that Sowell was taking a cheap shot, and that this sort of juvenile name calling was used by pseudo intellectuals.

"This column is his opinion about what the results of the Iowa Caucas results mean, not a defense or attack on any candidate's political platform."

Well if the above is true, why would Sowell call the three leading Democratic candidates demagogues? Does that make logical sense?

redeyerex
I stand by my original statement, I see nothing that would qualify him to be President. Yes, his education might get him a job on wall street if he should choose, but he didn’t, I still see no management or executive experience. Yes he is qualified to enter into one of those entry level positions and eventually have enough experience to run something, sure he is liberal and I don’t like that about him but he is also unqualified. Yes he is very likeable and very articulate, nice if you looking for a date for your daughter for a social event, but hardly qualified to be President. I am assuming we will never agree on this but your arguments are weak.

Excellent smackdown of "Mr. Get Over Yourselves"!

You beat me to it...

Great minds, etc.!

Mr. Thomas: Really?
What has Mr. Obama accomplished other than demonstrating the functional limitations of “affirmative action?” President of the Harvard Law Review? Could this be a measure of personal charisma applied to a popularity contest vice ability? At an institution that is infamous WRT grade inflation? At an institution where, Mr. Derek Bok, the outgoing president stated that if weren’t for affirmative action/quotas, 90% of all hyphenated-Americans couldn’t gain admission on their own merits? Graduated magna c#m laude from Harvard Law School? If 90% of Harvard undergraduates can graduate c#m laude or better with degrees focusing on some nebulous “mental m*sturbation”-related subject, it stands to reason that the same can be expected of its Law School. Illinois State Senator? His voting record as a Peoples Republic of Illinois senator places him to the far, far-left of Clinton. When he became firmly ensconced in Illinois politics, his wife’s salary as a Hospital “Community Outreach Coordinator” coincidentally went from $125K to $375K. Not that said community hospital was trying to buy any influence. God knows. An elected Senator? Being elected allows first rate personalities with second rate minds to achieve power & privilege without having to take the time to earn said power & privilege legitimately. Published two (2) works of self-aggrandizing banality camouflaged as books? Wow!!! Any infamous wife killer can hire a “ghost writer” to generate a manuscript ready for publishing. You leftists place entirely too much value on what the MSM allows you to read.

Mr. Thomas: Sophists
The so called “intelligence” of sophists like Mr. Obama doesn’t impress the “demonstrably intelligent.” Call me a technocratic snob, but engaging in Sophoclean rhetoric & the verbal “hairsplitting” endemic to the Legal Profession is hardly indicative of analytic intelligence. Neither is pandering to your parasitic voter base. His black-chauvinism recently manifested itself when he was recorded pandering to a group of equally-chauvinistic hyphenated-American “community leaders & other assorted poverty pimps at Hampton University, a 1st tier “HBC” but 2nd tier university. Big surprise. Here’s an individual who has had everything handed to him because of the hue of skin & the charisma of his personality.

What is Mr. Obama other than an enabler/apologist for hyphenated-American privilege in perpetuity: affirmative action/quotas, progressive (i.e., white) confiscatory income taxation that supports a welfare state, etc? Hardly original thinking WRT a demographic group that votes solidly Socialist/Democrat due to their institutionalized “entitlement” mentality.

Where’s the real diversity of thought among the Democrat candidates. What is the Democratic Party’s idea of “Diversity”? Answer: ethnic, gender, sexual-orientation heterogeneity while maintaining socialist/neo-Marxist ideological purity. Leading Democrat candidates:

+White-male, neo-Marxist trial lawyer;
+White-female, neo-Marxist trial lawyer; and
+ Black-male, neo-Marxist trail lawyer

All advocating cradle to grave socialism (e.g., socialized medicine) IOT appeal to their “parasite class” (e.g., entitlement-minded single women) voter base.

Have you ever noticed that the very same trial lawyers never seem to advocate “Socialized Legal Services”?

The comment you refer to was written by "lilly" in response to my post about Colin Powell possibly being president.

Sam...Earth to Sam, are you there?
Since those evil "towelheads" are so intolerant and are inclined to bomb, or stone to death, those who commit sacrelige against Islam, perhaps you ought to have a discussion with President Bush and advise him that his observation that "Islam is a great religion of peace", just might be a ludicrous and nonsensical statement. It is our president who is under the delusion Islam and the tolerance which undergirds democracy are compatible.

I don't need your pompous lectures on the threat Islam poses to our way of life.

Lecture our president, instead.

lilly
Do you really believe what you posted? Is there a major candidate that does not have secret service protection? Quite a leap to go from needing secret service protection to saying it it because of conservatives that love guns.

Regarding Colin Powell and his fire in the belly comment, I think he started down the path thinking it wasn't going to be that difficult to become president. He was riding the huge wave of popularity from the Gulf War. Remember his comment about the Iraqi Republican Guard? I believe it went something like: "We're going to cut it off and then kill it!" Those that supported the war had no problem with that statement. Those that opposed the war, well, you know what they thought of it because you are in that camp.

So how could he run for president as a Democrat after making that statement? He lost his fire to run when he realized he would have to take actual positions on things and defend them. His positions on social issues were not conservative. He could have still run, but he would have been opposed and I don't think he wanted to deal with that.

"demagoguery -noun
1. impassioned appeals to the prejudices and emotions of the populace"

None of the definitions provided above take away the fact that Sowell gives no specific examples that prove that Obama, Edwards, or Clinton, engage in "glib demagoguery". He calls them a derogatory name without backing it up with facts. That was my original point.

AT
I would love to debate Obama's political platform, once I actually hear it.

For instance, here's his "official" views on Illegal Aliens and Iraq:

"Obama wants to preserve the integrity of our borders (and) crack down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants." BUT, he also has "introduced amendments to keep illegal alien families together" and he wants to create a way for illegal aliens to "pay a fine and learn English" to have the opportunity to become citizens.

On Iraq....

"Obama will immediately (over a year and a half period) begin to remove our troops from Iraq (and) Obama made it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq." HOWEVER, "...if al Qaeda (or other bad guys) attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will KEEP troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes."

Bottomline, Obama won't be able to pull this tap dance routine in a general election debate. He is going to have to actually commit to issues and policy opinions....and then we will see his support take a dramatic turn.

Now,now...
Piling on poor Lilly is "puppy kicking".

Relax and enjoy the day. Hey, maybe we'll get to see the Clintons run out of town!

Do ceck the Drudge report headline. The comments to that one make us all look laid back!

One correction
In my post above, second quote, Obama uses the ultra-PC (and ridiculous) "undocumented immigrant" term as opposed to "illegal aliens". My apologies.

Anthony Thomas wrote:

You asked what does "glib demogoguery" mean. We answered.

With respect to Dr. Sowell's not providing specific examples, there are pleny of examples that are widely known (e.g., Obama advocating invading Pakistan; Edwards channelling dead babies in court while shaking down physicians; Hillary, well, opening her mouth), and he only has so much space in a column.

Icedog
Well you might be correct about Obama. During the general Election, he might get exposed. We'll wait and see. However, I still think he's a decent guy with a solid platform.

Actually you'd be surprised to know that my favorite candidate is Ron Paul. I don't agree with all of his ideas, but I think he's a brilliant, honest man that has been shamelessly ignored by the GOP, obviously because of his foreign policy positions.

Poor Lilly
From the writings of hers I have read on TH, the tenor and content of her posts commonly demonstrate that she may have real problem related to some form of paranoia.

The blur of the color line
Sowell:
"So much for the "race, class and gender" mantra among the intelligentsia".

Demosthenes:
"+White-male, neo-Marxist trial lawyer;
+White-female, neo-Marxist trial lawyer; and
+ Black-male, neo-Marxist trail lawyer"

are we going colorblind????? perhaps

No, Indep Think,
Lilly is no different than the other irrational libs that post here. They are just lonely, angry people who are looking for some attention. Why else would they lurk here other than to feel so pious and superior.

They are interested in dropping little bomblets, not dialogue. Their only responses to any thoughtful article is a personal attack on anyone with whom they disagree. Below is a partial list of their stock answers to every issue:
-Conservatives are evil
-Blood for oil
-Haliburton
-Evil corporations
-Evil military
-It's Bush's fault
-Guns are evil
-Evil people will respond to understanding(except those above).
-Wealth is stolen
-Tolerance for everyone (except those above).
-Feelings are more important than thinking

I like McCain
But I think Romney would be a better President, at least from their debate performances over the weekend. Romney got attacked, yet remained calm. Hillary, on the other hand, got shrill.

On the issues, I like Fred Thompson the best. But he does come across as lacking energy and seems to have a disorganized campaign. I like him, though.

I'd be pro-Giuliani if he wasn't pro-choice. If it's him against Obama, I'll vote for him, though. Huckabee has an appealing personality, is pro-life and supports the Fair Tax, which is intriguing, but his ethics violations, etc., in Arkansas turn me off.

I hope it's either Romney or McCain on the GOP side. that's just my opinion. Actually, I pray for this nation that the best candidate wins, regardless of my own personal feelings.

Obama assassination?
If it were to happen, I would follow the money trail and I suspect it would lead to the Clintons. Hillary's run is over, done, put a fork in it. The more people see of her, the more they dislike her. But, she is vindictive and does not give up the fight. Just add Obama's name to the list of 50 Clinton associates that have met untimely deaths. Once you get past the first dozen or so, it becomes much easier.

Being conivingly wicked, the Clintons would necessarily hire a devout right-wing lunatic to do the deed so that they could claim, with Lilly, that the knuckle-draggers did it.

Edwards being glib

Take the profit from health care.

I wonder if he would support taking the profit out of being a Lawyer?

My husband's liberal
co-worker told my husband that she has always voted "D" (no surprise there) but definitely believes McCain would be the best choice in 2008 (and though it would be extraordinarily difficult for her she would vote this way.) When I hear a liberal say this I know the candidate, (in this case McCain) really IS a liberal hiding behind the "R" (or as Mr. Medved hates to hear, RINO.)

Good job posters on responses to various TH lib trolls. It almost seems as if Lilly hangs about to get posters to respond to her idiocy but then conveniently disappears when the heat is on. I have often suspected she is a TH plant used to get the comment boards going.

Rich Not wealthy
"Obama assassination? If it were to happen, I would follow the money trail and I suspect it would lead to the Clintons."

Don't be too sure. The Clintons may be crooks, but they're pretty adept at covering their tracks.

"Hillary's run is over, done, put a fork in it."

I wish I could agree with you, but Hillary has a knack for coming back (kind of like a malignant tumor). I hope she loses, but she has a pretty formidbable machine backing her.

No Petrovian
We definitely DO NOT need another lesser of two evils election! The two parties have totally rigged the entire process to allow themselves to stay in power and accrue more of it with each election.

This false lack of choice is what has given us rank partisanship in Washington and destroyed any semblance of leadership in our nation. If all you listen to is the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda, and predicate your vote on the lies that are being told to us once again, you you will consign the future of the country and our kids to more of the same.

That more of the same is more big government, continued declining personal freedoms, and a greater influence to the internationalists who hate America. The only chance we have to restore America to its founding principles is to deny the elites the Presidency! Only that will get their attention.

If you care to learn how the elites have scammed the American people and duped us into thinking we have no other choice, nowhere else to go, I urge you to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG.

It is the one place to find a candidate not tied to any party machine, PAC, corporation, or money grubbing lobbyist. It is the one place to see how cleverly the elites have hijacked our nation and stolen our inheritance. Check it out, you will not be disappointed. Thanks, Joe

Per Lilly
"And plenty of posts have resented Obama as an upstart who doesn't know his place.

Can you give an example? I have never, ever seen even one comment such as this on TH. Not one!

Good post Lynn,
Lilly; Put up or shut up.

Not ashamed to be right
You may be right about Lilly. However, I actually know people who think like her and sharer her opinions, so it is possible that she is real.

WOW!! Demosthenes, my hero,
B!tch slapped the H$ll out of Mr. Thomas!

Excellent, really, bravo!!

Augustus_McRae, my Mom
tells me that back in the distant 1960's, ol' Jesse Jackson himself used to speak differently, you once could actually understand what he was saying.

My two middle children are bi-racial, and I know what you mean about putting on the MacDaddy, my daughter (Who was raised by ME) sounds contrived and ridiculous as she attempts to improperly speak that way. Example: Instead of "Why did you do that?" it's "Why you do dat?", and "Who you be wit?"
It's so phony, and very hard to listen to someone deliberately dumbing down herself. It kills me:(

71 percent of Democrats....

Voted against Hillary?

There is a chunk of that 71% Democrat vote, who will never allow Obama on their front lawn.

Hillary is down, but that does not make Obama up.

Thanks, but ........!
Thanks, but when will we, or will we, ever get any candidate that is worthy of and have the abilities requird to be our President?

For example on the Democratic side:

"By far the best presentation as a candidate, among all the candidates in both parties, is that of Barack Obama. But if he actually believes even half of the irresponsible nonsense he talks, he would be an utter disaster in the White House.

Among the Democrats, the choice between John Edwards and Barack Obama depends on whether you prefer glib demagoguery in its plain vanilla form or spiced with a little style and color.

The choice between both of them and Hillary Clinton depends on whether you prefer male or female demagoguery."

I cannot ever see me voting for any of these, these, .............! Oh what the heck are they anyway? Characters is the best I can come up with - now!

I think I feel sick! :-)

Obama is Up
Because people have gotten a really good look at Hillary. The more they see the less they like. There is no way she can change that. Bill's performances of late show he knows it too.

Demosthenes
I would like to second Persephone's observation of your response to Anthony Thomas. Bravo.

Lilly: If you're there, I'm waiting. You accuse some conservatives on TH of the most inflammatory racist rhetoric with regard to Barak Obama and to date, have given not ONE example. Methinks you make things up.

We need a great Front Man

Let’s remember what a President has to do. His most important job is to appoint 30,000 people to run the Government. His main function is to act as the “front man” in the operation, while the staff does the work.

Just remember JFK was a real front man, is considered to have been a great president, but no one can remember why, except that he was a great front man. He may also have been the brain behind the front, but that’s difficult to see.

His worst error was the appoint Bobby to anything, his best was to court Marilyn Monroe. I know, I know, I’m not supposed to say that, but she was such a Sweetie.

Reagan was both a Front Man and the brain behind the front. I met with him many times in meetings when he was Governor, and in private meetings in later years, and I can assert he knew what was going on and what he wanted to have go on.

So remember, being the Front man is a nice job, but there are other reasons to elect a President.

Clinton was a likable man, but was lucky to have Newt running Congress in his last term.

Bush is not so very lovable, and he has had no one running the Congress, so he looks even worse than he actually is, and that’s hard to do.

But remember, the most important thing is that in addition to being a Front Man, a Republican will appoint staff who are more conservative than the liberal staff who will be appointed by a Democrat.

The problem in this election so far, is that the Republicans don’t seem to have a good Front man running, while the Demos do. Tough.

jim -- appointing conservatives --
"But remember, the most important thing is that in addition to being a Front Man, a Republican will appoint staff who are more conservative than the liberal staff who will be appointed by a Democrat."

Eh -- I don't know about that --

I know that's how it's *supposed* to work -- but every time I think about that, I think about Harriet Myers --

White Flight...

As I said before... White Democrats are voting "against" Obama on the basis of race.

And they call Republicans bigoted?

Carlos review the posts here
From what I can see you are the only one concerned about Obama's race.

at the risk of over feeding
I have to jump in on Lily's comment regarding
guns/murder/assassination by I presume white
redneck gun owners or worse eeeevil NRA members.
I'm the adoptive mother of a biracial, son who is struggling tofree himself of 20 yrs. homosexual life so the racist attack is null and void.
Having said that, if Lily is so concerned about innocent life, why is she supporting someone who has consistently (per a TH forum writer) voted
for abortion in any form and if said writer's
facts are true, for less than perfect newborns.
Hmmmmm??? In my book, it's MURDER in it's most heinous form, against innocent, helpless babies who haven't committed any crimes except having
the temerity to be conceived. And anyone who
supports it by voting for candidates, or supporting abortuaries a la Planned Parenthood
are equally guilty and have the blood of innocents on their hands as well as the doctors,
and pandering politicians. So if lilly were
smart she wouldn't go there.

Lily you ignorant sl*t...
"The people who love guns, love killing, love to talk about guns and shooting, are the same ones who oppose Obama."

What an ignorant statement.

Scott M: Yes, lilly is ignorant...

And she's got an acute case of BDS... really acute.

Most of us would have, at one time or another, shaken lilly until her teeth rattled... assuming that she has teeth....

But please don't go to that kind of name calling...

Please!

You Hit the Nail the Head
Thank you Thomas! You made it so clear; I cannot believe that most comments failed to understand the fundamental fact and truth of the matter of character and temperament of an acting President, or Commander and Chief. You cannot turn over big guns to men or women who show a spiteful or aggressive temperament.

"They, who are most calm and masterful confronting adversity, are prepared and ready to run, with knowledge, wisdom and understanding, having achieved a high degree of personal self-mastery."

THIS IS WORTH REPEATING FROM YOUR COLUMN

"The question of what kind of President each candidate would make is infinitely more important than all the "horse race" handicapping that dominates the media."...

..."When it comes to personal temperament, Governor Romney would rate the highest for his even keel, regardless of what events are swirling around him, with Rudolph Giuliani a close second."

"Temperament is far more important for a President than for a candidate. A President has to be on an even keel 24/7, for four long years, despite crises that can break out anywhere in the world at any time."

Mitt Romney has been in the fire longer, I believe than any candidate. He was at the bottom of the totem pole. He has worked hard just so he may serve the American people. He has a love and respect for truth, life and humanity. He reminds me of another great and humble leader. George Washington’s Carver, a man born in slavery, raised out of obscurity, honored in our history because of his even humble temperament amid turmoil and adversity. Moreover, the best if this, the color of your skin does not make a difference. Mitt saw how his father supported the marched in the cause of human rights along with Martin Luther King for many years.

God bless our noble people everywhere! God brings you forth in times of need, to overcome our selfish pride, corruption and greed.

Anne, baby - chill out!
I could be wrong, but I'd like to think that Scott's "Lilly, you ignorant sl*t" comment was a take off on the TV news anchor skit, "Point, Counterpoint" between Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin on the old comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Dan used to start his rant with the preface, "Jane you ignorant sl*t..." That was quite famous and EXTREMELY funny, a real knee slapper. Maybe you are too young to remember it.
If I am correct about Scott, then, "Anne, you ignorant sl*t, you need to chill out!"
Even if I am wrong, and Scott was not trying to inject a bit of humor into an otherwise humorless situation, Lilly is so ignorant, illogical, manipulative, and annoying that I don't much care what anybody calls her.
Actually, per Uncle Alby's advise of some time ago, I wish everybody would simply ignore Lilly, AT, and their sickening sophist ilk. Their senseless comments are not worth responding to.
