Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Apparently there is nobody among either the Democrats or the Republicans who is going to cause a runaway stampede like that which toppled all the Republican front-runners in 1940, when the convention delegates began loudly chanting "We want Wilkie!"

It is a struggle to keep awake during most of the so-called "debates" among the small army of candidates in both parties. At least the primaries will put an end to those awful spectacles.

It is much too early to try to guess who is going to win either party's nomination. The most we can have at this point are some general impressions.

None of the candidates looks truly inspiring at this point. I wouldn't buy a used car from most of them, nor a brand new car from some of them.

John Edwards is the easiest to peg. He looks just like the phony that he is.

His talk about poor children going to bed hungry may rouse the far left in his party but in fact the lowest-income people are even more obese than the rest of us, not that the facts make the slightest difference to Senator Edwards.

As an attorney, Edwards conned millions of dollars out of gullible juries, using junk science to create the impression that it was the fault of doctors when babies were born with birth defects.

Republicans, as usual, seem to have more people who would make good presidents than people who would make good presidential candidates. Unfortunately for them, we have elections instead of coronations.

Fred Thompson seems to have the best policy positions and the best political track record among the Republican candidates -- and the least effective presentation of himself.

If Senator Thompson can beat the odds and become president, he would probably be better than most of those who have been in the White House in recent times -- though that is not extravagant praise.

The only candidate of either party who truly looks presidential is Mitt Romney. It was unfortunate that Mike Huckabee and others have tried to make his religion an issue.

John F. Kennedy was supposed to have taken that issue out of politics -- and Huckabee's bringing it back in ought to disqualify him for a shot at the White House, even aside from Governor Huckabee's wholesale pardons of criminals and his raising taxes.

Romney and Giuliani are both articulate Republicans -- and it is rare for the Republicans to have two at one time. Some presidential election years they haven't even had one.

If Romney's and Giuliani's track records in office matched their ability to talk, either of them could unite and lead their party to victory. But that is no small "if."

When it comes to articulation, no one can beat Barack Obama. He can even convince people that he has new ideas, when in fact they are old 1960s ideas that have failed repeatedly, ever since that irresponsible decade.

John McCain seems to be having a little resurgence but it is hard to believe that Republicans are so desperate as to support a man who joined with far left Democrat Russ Feingold to restrict free speech in the name of "campaign finance reform" and with Ted Kennedy to sponsor a bill giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Then there is Hillary Clinton, formerly known as "front-runner" Hillary Clinton or the "inevitable" candidate Hillary Clinton.

It is painful to watch her trying to act human and it would be even more painful to see the Clintons back in the White House that they disgraced in so many ways.

She might even be shameless enough to put him on the Supreme Court, where he could ruin the law of the land, as many of his own judicial appointees are already doing in the federal courts.

As for the other candidates in both parties, the big question is why anyone takes them seriously as candidates to lead the nation at a time of huge dangers that terrorists will end up with nuclear weapons, whether from Iran or Pakistan.

This nation has come back from unpromising times before. Let's hope that we have not already used up all our luck.

Quick!

Somebody make up an Article. Then we can take over the Prager show!

We got you now Dennis :)

Nice article
I do think with some more time the leading candidates will come forward with more specific plans. The problem is that everyone is competing for limited air-time. With 8 candidates on the right and 5 or so on the left the field is just to open.

We need to limit the group to the top 3 candidates and then have substantive dialog to determine which candidates make the most sense.

We need something else:
We need Alan Keyes for President.

http://www.alankeyes.com

With terrorists at our doorstep, Ambassador Keyes is the candidate I trust most.

The (R) after Huckabee's name
As a Republican who is conservative on the economy and foreign policy, and more conservative than moderate on social issues, I am also left without a clear favorite. But I have decided that one prominent candidate I could not vote for would be Huckabee. His liberalism on a host of issues combined with the glib way in which he derided the difficult decisions Bush has had to make on foreign policy simply disqualify him as far as I'm concerned. If we elect a president with an (R) after his name, the US electorate will likely want to balance him out with senators and house members with (D)s after their names. That's a fair trade-off only if Mr. President (R) actually lives up to his "(R)". If he's going to act like a stealth (D), I'd rather have a real (D) in the Whitehouse. At least that way, we're more likely to balance out the (D) president with an (R) congress.

OnceWarior -Alan Keyes worth considering

OnceWarior writes: “We need something else: - We need Alan Keyes for President.”

I have had a favorable opinion of Alan Keyes since the first time I saw him in a presidential debate (1996). His passion and conviction are undeniable, and his ability to articulate his positions always comes across with clarity and sincerity.

Unfortunately, Mr. Keyes does not get the media coverage or respect that he seems to deserve. I checked the link you provided, and spent about 30 minutes looking over his various positions on the issues.

This man stands for everything I am aware of that conservatives claim to stand for. This man could unite not just the Republican party (for which I care very little, anymore), but good and decent people of all backgrounds (about whom I do care).

My examination has only been cursory so far, but I am not aware of any flip-flops or anything inconsistent in his background or political record.

Glancing through his positions on 36 different issues, I am not necessarily opposed to replacing the income tax with a sales tax, but I would want to understand it better. Other than that reservation pending further information, I agree with and support everything I’ve read so far. That’s extraordinary.

Why isn’t this man considered a serious candidate?

Please check his positions for yourself; they are clear, direct and refreshingly to the point:

Alan Keyes .....
like all human beings, isn't perfect. However, added to the list of candidates for 2008, he's the least imperfect of any of the candidates (as would be Dr. Sowell). As the social-fascists (aka communists/nazis, aka Democrats) despise anyone who supports constitutionalism regardless of their race, Democrats all have a great hate for Keyes - proof that "Democrats" aren't pro-hammites but rather pro-fascists.

Obama
Dr. Sowell is right about Obama's proposals. If you go to his website and read what he says, you'll see that EVERYTHING he is proposing is already in place and NOT WORKING.

Romney is Presidential???
The Clinton/Bush years must have jaded Thomas Sowell. Romney is a consummate flip-flopper who will say anything and do anything to become president. He's the Republican answer to John Kerry and Sowell thinks that he's presidential? About as presidential as Clinton, Kerry or that other flip-flopper George Bush. Remember "no nation building", "smaller government"?

The best possible outcome for this election would be if all of the candidates ended up in jail for campaign finance violations. No president at all would be better than any of the unprincipled political whores that are running.

Apollo
You propose the most practical solution to the current dilemma of lousy candidates. If they were all jailed for a couple years we would be treated to a whole new crop. It would have to to be an improvement.

Alan Keyes and J C Watts
either or both would get my vote.

Sad
It is sad the once Great America has come down to relying on luck to survive rather than the intellect, inventiveness, work ethic and spirit that got us up to 1937.

the party line
sorry you have bought into the "party line" concerning your references to Mike Huckabee. Even a cursory look into his record in Arkansas explains why so many establishment types are so scared. This election is going to be about social issues. Thats why Obama is the likely democratic candidate and why Mike is the only one who can beat him.

?????
Was Mr. Bill Clinton the last "GREAT" President in American history?"US" are indeed at a Crossroad of Leadership. No candidate has more than 50% of what we need.Ron Paul could do it,but we all know "TRUTH" does not play well in America. So which LIAR has the best GAME?It is time to PLAY!Lie to the American people,YOU win.Tell the "TRUTH" to the American people,YOU LOSE.I am LOST...

Dr. Sowell says it
precisely as I have been thinking it. What a motley group we have to choose among. I do wish Fred Thompson would come out of his stupor. That might awaken me from mine.

Hustler
Dr. Sowell said Romney 'looks' presidential. Tall, great hair, photogenic. Wait, are you implying there should be more qualifications?

Hunter is Consistent
Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate with a consistent "Conservative" record. The GOP 'elite' won't allow him to have the light of day. They know if WE knew his true credentials their preference would never stand a chance.

Duncan Hunter belongs in the same group as our founding fathers; he has national pride, an attribute that has escaped the so called front runners.

Hunter WON the Texas Straw Poll
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/09/01/hunte r_wins_texas_straw_poll/

Duncan Hunter is the only candidate that really gets this - in addition to being the only EFFECTIVE politician on securing our borders, STRONGLY pro-life (authored the personhood at conception bill, attended the pro-life march in D.C., etc.), most qualified to fight the WOT, and check out his voting record for more:

http://www.issues2002.org/CA/Duncan_Hunter.htm

YOU should be suppoting Duncan Hunter, too, if you care about our nation’s morality, and our nation’s security.

5 Stars again. Fred is the best
choice we have and he seems to be uninspired because, as he has stated, he does not have a great desire to be President, but he feels that the country needs him and his leadership abilities and he is reluctantly running to save our country. That is about as honest as you can get, unless you think being crazy is more honest (aka Ron Paul). I unfortunately agree that honesty is usually not the best policy in an election. The last time a Presidential candidate was honest (Barry Goldwater), he was trounced by LBJ who said absolutely nothing during the election except that he did not agree with Barry. Of course after the election, he did exactly what Barry said he would do.

HereMeNow
Hunter is my first choice right now, I hope he is still with us through the Florida primary so i can vote for him. His lack of support puzzles and discourages me. We can only hope its lack of recognition.

Goldwater's honesty
and subsequent landslide defeat have screwed up American politics ever since. It always took guts by pols sadly lacking in same, to tell the truth. Since Goldwater, the liars have the perfect excuse. The current revolt of much of the GOP base would indicate at least some people are fed up with it. From what i read, a lot of Dems are not that happy with those they elected either. Could we be heading into an era where voters expect pols to tell the truth, or at least, keep their promises? Naw. Too much to ask. Keep treating us like mushrooms. It always works, or if not always, at least over 90% of the time. That's the re-election rate for incumbents.

Fred Thompson...
...has decided he has a big announcement to make on 7 Novenber,2008,on Nightline.Speculation is running wild in the media. Will he decide to run? Will he decide to not run? Stay tuned!

the worst thing about Sowell is his lies
1. Huckabee didn't pardon thousands of people. They don't issue pardons in Arkansas, it goes thorough a parole board which was controlled by democrats. Huckabee signs off or doesn't. That is it, it is not a presidential type of pardon. He had the power to commute sentences which he did but most of those went from life without parole to 20 to 40 years. Now for anyone who knows anything about prisons which I doubt almost anyone who comments here seems to, life expectancy in prison averages 17 years. That is the mean. So a 20 to 40 year sentence is the same as life imprisonment. Add to the fact that 12 men were executed under Huckabee and you see that this whole attack it simply a well orchestrated attempt by the the Bush back Mitt Romney and his talk show host buddies to use partial infomration and get a Willie Horton moment.
2. If you compare Massachuettes and Arkansas, you have two different states. One which when Huckabee took office had the worst educational system in america and some of the worst roads. Mass was at the other end. Under Romney taxes were increased more than under Huckabee. The club of growth doesn't take any of that into account, it simply says if you raise taxes you are bad. So simplistic, and easy to be if your support is mostly from richer people.
3. Fred Thompson squandered all his good will by showing himself to be less interested in being a candidate than by seeing just how dull he could be. He must have had realy good writers in his acting roles because in person, he makes GW Bush look like a good speaker.

Hold nose and pull
DR. Sowell has voiced what a lot of us have been thinking for a long time. Republicans have not been well represented in the past several elections. We always wind up with about as poor a candidate as the Lamocrat and we have been forced to hold our noses and vote for the lesser of the evil candidates or “waste” our vote on some 3rd party person who has no chance. The only other alternative was to simply drop out of the process and stay at home on election day. That is what happened in the 2006 elections and the reason the Lamocrats took the election.

The Republican elites to this day have not got the straight word yet on this and believe it was the “war” that cost them. Look turkeys if you are reading this, the base of the party does not want to cut and run, therefore they still support the administration on the war. They do NOT support the administration on amnesty, big government spending, and interference in the local school systems.

The sad fact is that the lection system since the advent of TV has made the elections a contest where the one with the most glib tongue and the prettiest face is judged the winner. The actual content of the answer is never even examined. This is why we wind up with people like Romney most of the time. As for Bush and his poor speaking ability; he was only elected because the lames ran somebody who was even worst. First it was Albore who was running the race with Bill Klinton on his back. Then it was Traitor Kerry who voted for it before he reported for duty and then voted against it. He actually ran a campaign based on a war record in which he behaved in a traitorous manner. He could not have ran a worse campaign.

That election was the straw for me. No more hold nose and pull lever.

My choice
Based largely on his (or his advisor's) writings at TownHall.com, I am still a Fredhead. His demeanor indicates to me that unlike most ego-driven candidates, his run for for the office is not based on a narcissistic need and that's O.K. with me.

To put some fire onto the ticket the selection of Alan Keyes for veep would be a master stroke.

Fred is cool and deliberate; Alan is rousing and coservative. What a combo to get attention from the press and persuade the electorate to return to the Constitution.

Thompson/Keyes...........I'd love it!!!

Thompson's The Guy
I'm voting for Thompson. He actually has detailed plans that I like. I believe he's a "what you see is what you get" kind of guy who isn't putting on his game face to run for office.

Although Romney matches me on many issues I think that I can't trust him to still match me on issues after he's in office. I wonder, if he holds the same ideas on issues today, that he did a few years ago, why did those big libs in Massachusetts vote for him? Who knows what he really stands for? I can't vote for Huckabee and if he gets the nomination and the presidency there are going to be an awful lot of Americans with broken hearts once he gets in office because they haven't taken a good look past his obviously swell communication ability. McCain was not the guy then and is not the guy now. He's one of the reasons why the people on Capitol Hill have low approval ratings and being a Republican doesn't change that. I thought Giuliani was a swell DA and a swell mayor of NYC but I live in the suburbs. He's never lived outside of a big city and running like a big city guy who doesn't know or care about anything other than big cities. It disturbs me greatly that he can't be bothered with Iowa when he has had the money to campaign there. Ron Paul is too scary. I love Duncan Hunter but I don't think he'll make it to Super Tuesday.

Ron Paul Or Ronald Reagan?

What if ......
What if we held the 2008 Presidential election and no one voted? Ha! Interesting thought! Perhaps we need a "None of the Above" category on the election ballots! Sorry, I cannot help myself with this bunch of loosers and incompetents running for our President and leader, on the left and right! Let us hope that whomever is elected remains incognito and does no harm!

If Dr. Sowell's expressed thought...
....of William J. Clinton as a Justus on the SCOTUS doesn't scare the sh1t out of you, than nothing will. ANY ONE of the "R's" running right now will be better than Hillary (or any of the "D's" for that matter). Which ever Republican wins the primaries and gets the nod, I'll support. PERIOD!
All of you should, no must be able to swallow hard and make sure an "R" gets to be POTUS. Certainly since Reagan there has not been a clear choice of picking a winner, only the lesser of two evils.

Draft a Gingrich - Watts ticket. That would be a true winner.

TBC :>)

TBC
Bill as a SCOTUS!!?? AAARGHHH!!!

Personally, I'm of the opinion that if Mrs. Clinton gets the nomination, she will ask Mr. Clinton to be her running mate. There's no illegality to overcome, and she knows she's a total eff-up, and there's no precedent. One thing is sure: if she does become president, her husband will have a very high appointed position.

He can't be in the shadows.

Thank you
That was a great article and it had me laughing.

I think Thompson needs to expand on his Latin America and Cuban position. His presentation is getting better by the day. His manner of speach allows him to eloquently and simply explain the crux of the matter. He has the deliberation and gravitas in is presentation. I would need more information on his government reform and tax plan. He has wisely kept his religious views within the constraints of the job requirements.

The below website has some worrying disconnects though I'm sure there are circumstances that fully represent his thinking.

http://www.ontheissues.org/senate/Fred_Thompson.htm

Speaking of Goldwater
A news commentator once said Barry Goldwater was too honest to be elected president. I was young and idealistic then and thought that was one of the worst indictments Of the American people ever. Unfortunately, it turned out to be true and is more so today.
By the way Dr. Sowell, thank you so much for telling it like it is about the obesity of the "poor". I get really ticked when I see some big fat cow stand up and insist she needs more welfare money because her kids do not have enough to eat!

Trade Johm McCain
for Joe Lieberman as soon as soon as possible. Once that trade is accomplished, both John and Joe can be what they REALLY are.

Put a pair of glasses
on Mitt Romney and he looks exactly like Keith Olbermann.

If that is not enough to scare you, I don't know what is.

And I still like Duncan Hunter
And I still like Duncan Hunter even though he isn't getting a lot of coverage.

America IS ready
for a black (or for those politically correct, an African-American) President.

His name is Alan Keyes.

Cultures?
The issue of cultural identity is a pervasive problem in that the successful business culture, called "being white" by some has its own set of rules to play by. If you want to acheive a level of success within this culture, you need to follow the norms set in the rules. If you want to maintain your "own" culture, that is fine by me as long as you don't whine and complain that you are not receiving the benefits of our culture.

Yes, there are those within "our" culture that cheat and steal and seem to get away with it, but that is not the norm.

It is also obvious that "our" culture is not reserved only for whites. There are many successful blacks, asians, muslims and hispanics to dispell the notion that you have to be white to make it in this culture. It should also be obvious that being white does not automatically provide you with success within our culture, Britney Spears not withstanding.

Diversity, at least the PC version being spouted by the MSM, is not a positive thing with regards to the survival and prosperity of the USA. You can be proud of your heritage, but if you want to become an American, you need to accept and adopt the American culture. Multi-ethnic but with one culture. Our culture changes over time due to the influence of the cultures of imigrants and that is fine. But please don't come to the US and demand that we simply accept your culture as equal to ours. You left your country to come to the US to achieve a better life for you and your family. Demanding that we become just like the place you left means that the opportunities you came to avail yourself of will no longer exist.

Let me respectfully disagre
witt YLG.

If Hillary Clinton gets elected to be President (Heaven forbid!!) she will insist to be called President Rodham. She will ditch Bill like yesterday's garbage, since he helped to get her elected, after a miserable life of putting up with his pecadilloes while enduring a loveless "marriage".

She is too caclulating, cunning and manipulating to put up with a hillbilly who caused her nothing but embarrassment most of her marriage to him. He served his purpose in life. GOODBYE!!

So, no co-presidency! It was enough for two terms, already.

Truelib
Are you addressing me? If so, what the heck are you talking about?

Rich L.
Well put.

Thompson/Hunter 08
Believe me, Huckabee will say what you want to hear to get elected, he will not hear what you say once he is there. He will be much worse than Bush about not listening to you.
He is perverting Christianity's message and violating 2000 years of it's traditions. He believes it is his Christian mandate to do good works through government. These of course with your money.

He also signed a bill in Arkansas making it difficult to homeschool your children. ( smoozing the NEA)
He said he would be for a federal ban on smoking.
He took a no fat crusade to the schools in Arkansas, creating a body fat index for every child in Arkansas public schools.
Pressler, the leader of the Southern Baptists in Arkansas, says Huckabee plays to the establishment and would be sub serviant to the State Department, and the New York Times.

And Huckabee did pardon thousands of criminals.
Even more than Bill Clinton. And yes, they can pardon criminals in Arkansas.
There are so many things about this man that send up giant warning signals, that were he to get the nomination, I won't vote.

Yukon Jack
Ummmm, you're not my hubby, are you...????

This is EXACTLY what he said to me yesterday!! I know your scenario is probably the truer one, but I'm of the opinion that the time to ditch him came, and went. If she were to ditch him after her "coronation", not only would it be highly suspect, most people would probably react in anger, seeing as he is the more charismatic of the two.

IMAO, she's stuck with him, but might lessen her pain by apointing him to be an ambassador.

Probably to Mongolia.... ;-)

jim bowie . . .
. . . is a well respected name in Texas. You lost my respect when you called Dr. Sowell a liar. My own research into Huckabee's record would indicate that Dr. Sowell was being extremely kind to the Preacher-man.

the missus clinton
dr sowell has her pegged accurately. It is painful to watch her try to act human. Her dislike and distain for others is so readily apparent that the dims conveniently overlook her haughty attitude as their even worse affliction of bds is more important to their existence. But again those of us on the right are waiting for the left to present plausible arguments as to why the missus clinton should be entrusted with leading this country. But now that they have abandoned all pretense that this is the missus clinton show and that the clinton's are again promising a joint presidentcy exactly what can we expect but a repeat of the 90's. Somethings never change and that is never more true than everything concerniong the clintons

Amazing ignorance!!
It is amazing that a straight shooting economist like Dr. Sowell IGNORES the only candidate that is offering a real solution to fend off the inevitable economic disaster (that will have us begging for world government led by the bankers who have enslaved us).

Dr. Ron Paul deserves the support of all clear thinkers and lovers of Constitutional liberty.

.....If Clinton were nominated ...I would anticipate an "Ides of March" moment in the Senate from outraged Republicans ...

.....You are right about the candidates ...Thompson seems to be the best of the lot but he is the victim of the worst campaign stategy in History ...by waiting so long to enter he built up expectations that were impossible to meet ...his highest poll numbers were just before he announced and when the press called him lazy and his campaign stlye lackluster ...Fred began to surge downward ...

.....I don't think that the Country wants another Southerner in the White House ...after Carter, Clinton and Bush jr the mood seems to be for a change ...the GOP cannot just cede the electoral rich Blue States to the Democrats and keep on winning ...I believe a Huckabee nomination would break the back of the Republican Party ...

it is amazing that the dims/leftists/socialists seem to think the return of the clinton's solves all of america's problems. We are told of this great experience the missus clinton enjoys but what of the two years of the monica crisis when the two clinton's barely communicated. But now as some type of repentance bubba is assuring all that his missus was making all the real decisions and she was responsible for all of the clinton successes. Bubba tells us he was merely the face for team clinton. But exactly who was making all those connections with the illegal contributions, the pardon scandals, the selling of the lincoln bedroom. Or is this a case of bubba acting without the missus clinton's knowledge and making decisions without her knowledge. Exactly what is the pig in the poke the clinton's are promising america for the return of this pair to the white house

WOW
you leave for a couple of days, and doom and gloom hits the highways at break-neck speed. Mr. Sowell, I too am sleepy eyed when it comes to the subjects at hand. I hope that Thompson will get some viagra or cialis and start hitting the trail "harder". I think he is the best choice the republicans have at this time. Another good article.

Do you want to read something funny?

My sister, a Bill Clinton supporter, is transferring to Arkansas due to a new job. She has sung his praises for YEARS, especially his record in education (??????). She is actively looking at private schooling for her precious five-year-old. When I asked her why, she said the state's educational system was beyond subpar. You could hear the crickets in ARKANSAS when I told her Mrs. Clinton was responsible!!

A great laugh was had by all...!!!

You got it backwards

the missus clinton solution for the pitiful state of education in arkansas. She merely lowered the standards. That way she wasn't required to remove any teachers unfit for the job or force schools to raise their dismal educational standards. But the pursuit of excellence and the dim mantra are polar opposites. When you are satisfied with the status quo you keep standards low so that you can always find some area to cite improvement. And still the dims keep telling all they can be trusted to maintain the values of america and keep america competitive. It seems that cuurently the dims are anxious to guarantee that the school system makes sure their students are competitive with the illegals they are encouraging to storm our borders

kLFrom all I can find out, Fred Thompson has been hitting the trail hard. But he is getting NO coverage. Nothing that happens good for him gets reported, or reported in passing. The media is choosing our candidates for us by the coverage. He has received many GREAT endorsements, such as National Right to life, and Congressman Steve King of Iowa. But all you hear from the media is crickets chirping. Everthing Huckabee even whispers is reported, as with others. The media, don't want Fred Thompson to win the nomination, so they are trying to squeeze him out.

Like the TH blog said today, Huckabee sounds like Hillary and Obama that has converted to Southern Baptist.

Fred has really been on the move, and his message remains the same. TRUTH, and very conservative. Which to the MSM is boring.

I guess my point is, that I would like to see Thompson start saying things that would bring the press to him! Get a little brash with them. That always draws attention.

Keyes
Some above commented about Alan Keyes. No chance that he would ever be considered, unfortunately.

I haven't seen anything of him for a number of years. I recollect (maybe wrongly) him in the primary debates of the 2000 election versus John McCain and GW Bush. My recollection is that he was erudite, collected, articulate, and wise, and that he wiped the floor with both of them.

I don't know how he is regarded today--entering the Iowa debates perhaps made him look too fringey (like Kucinic or Paul) to be considered for a VP slot. If that's so it's too bad.

Sowell's take
I respect Dr. Sowell. His take on the 3 democrat candidates is downright scary.

SSGT
BRRRRRRR!!!

We had the traditional "what-the-h3ll-is-THAT-supposed-to-mean?" moments, interspersed with the usual, "oh-you-didn't-know-THAT-about-so-and-so?!" and an occasional, "I-didn't-mean-to-blah-blah-blah".

I love my family, but I would have rather frozen my assets off in the Tundra, than go through THAT again.....

BTW, your pup must REALLY love you.... ;-)

Dr. Sowell dropped the ball
Wow...I really don't get this column from Dr. Sowell. His consistent and well considered opinions on the free market and conservatism as a whole seems to make him a slam-dunk supporter for Ron Paul's presidential campaign. But instead he writes this column and doesnt even MENTION Dr. Paul?? I don't get this at all. The vary ideas Dr. Sowell has espoused for years are to be found right in Ron Paul's presidential platform. What gives??

YLG
I hate to say it, but thats the reason I don't hang with the family on the Holidays. My pup makes more sense to me when he cocks his head to the side, with his ears standing tall, and staring at me until I say something like...ummm.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT DUMMY?"
He jumps up and starts dancing in circles. Its hilarious! I think all he wants is for me to pay attention to him. That make my day, alright.

SSGT
Guess what!!! Huckabee went pheasant hunting this morning, said he was showing that he understands the middle class. Oh Gag me!! That's what I mean. ( but I understand what you were saying, I just get worked upover the media)

Roy Beck of Numbers USA just put out his new list of candidates, and their plans for illegal aliens.
EXCELLLENT= Hunter and Thompson

GOOD= Ron Paul
FAIR- Mitt romney
Poor= Mike Huckabee
Bad = Rudy Giuliani

Oh yes, my family group went to a Christmas lunch yesterday with others. I stayed here with my little dog, watched Stargate on t.V. and really enjoyed the day. Had a roast ready when the others got home. And as I knew would happen, they didn't enjoy the visit, and were glad to get home.
Glad I'm at the age that I can say,"No I really don't want to go" and no one's feelings get hurt or anything.

THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM
There is something wrong with every Republican hopeful of winning the party nomination. And that's just the Republicans. Lord knows we can't start on the Democrats; there isn't enough room on the comment space.

The flaws are so real that this writer will have a difficult time voting.

Simultaneously holding one's nose and voting is going to be very difficult.

Another insightful column by Thomas Sowell.

Sir,
Sir, if you were running I would vote for you.

Clear-thinking and good sense are what we need most and, unfortunately, what seems to be in the shortest supply.

BmanIII
back atcha friend!!! Hope all is well with you. Get back soon, can't wait to read whats been going on with ya!!

Free Press?
It sounds good on paper, "free press", "free speech","free elections", but, the reality is quite different. Most people can't handle the "truth" and prefer the status quo. Hillary is the best example of someone least qualified to be POTUS, yet, the "free press" has ordained her as the "one" with hardly a competant vetting(she has the most experience, etc.), "free speech" allows her to say just about whatever without any justification(do we all really want uni-health care administered by the government?), we haven't had a "free election" in many years (voter IDs are coming soon). We are manipulated on a daily basis by the big 3 "FREEs", we are the last great hope of FREEDOM in this world, I hope we don't blow it!

Happy New Year...

hope all is well. But these threads have been suffering from the loss of you cryptic comments. I for one need some occaisional mental prodding to help put the barbs to the leftists that continue to infest these threads

when Wendle Willkie died
Very early in the morning of October 8, 1944, I was “stuffing” Sunday papers at the Akron Beacon Journal when Wendle Willkie died.

We went on coffee break while they put the story in the paper, and when we returned I noticed an error that seemed to say he died before he had the stroke, or whatever he had.

They said, “Keep the presses running while we make the change,” so many people received the paper with the error.

creole
don't lose your eggnog. Bubba would never attempt to take a job that requires full vetting of his life or something that would require him to put in effort to do. Their aren't enough perks to entice bubba and showing up on time for anything is a skill he never mastered

Hey you guys, stop that. When I go to HuffPro or whatever, all I read is hate for the right, and here on TH there is so much hate for the left.

What I would love is to find is a site that carries columns from both sides of the political chasm, and has posters who respond to the ideas presented, rather than holler and scream at each other.

I often post what I call one of my thousands of Snippets, just a short story of something nice and gentle that sometimes makes a point. I hate the screaming.

Whoops, there’s that word hate again.

BmanIII
Thank you for your wishes, and I'm hoping you come back soon!!

Felices Pascuas, y Prospero Ano Nuevo, to you, too!!

Voters are just
starting to focus on the candidates. We are beginning to see the start of people getting to know them and find choies.

As for Romney, he is my candidate because of his vast experience in truning arund failed companies. Just what our government needs.

I still like Thompson for his consistent conservative record and impressiive qaccomplishments through the year in the public and private sector and thought he was beginning to hit his stride during the last debate. Since voters are "show business" inclined they want a good speaker, charisma, excitement. In spite of his show business experience, these adjectives do not apply to Fred.

The Clintons always shared everything...
...even Monica.Maybe we should elect Lewinsky president: One for the price of two.

The problem with the Clintons was always their sexual relations with the American people:They screwed them every chance they could.

SSGT, nanna
I understand COMPLETELY!!!

I can't wait to be able to say, "Nope, I wanna stay dag gum here!", and not have someone freak out over it. My mom was great, my dad hilarious, but my sis had some issues with me. Frankly, I'm tired of giving a d*mn.

SSGT, you are lucky to have adoration like that. If only my fern looked at me the same way....Sigh...

jim
there is a difference between poking fun at the lunacies we hear from the left. Deflating many of their notions is not hate speech. But my reading of the posts shows far more hatred coming from the left than the right.

YLG
"Sigh" is me. The pup only wants the red "king kong ball". He lives for that thing. I took it away from him for a couple of days cause he was in some kinda non-listening mood, and if you could have seen his pitiful look he gave me, priceless. So, its not me, its the kong ball!!

according to cnn the missus clinton has a 15 point lead over obaba in iowa. The clinton news netowrk reports good news for the clinton's. Now that is real news that people can believe. When the msm starts reporting the news instead of acting as cheerleaders for the clintyon's that will be news worth reporting. But even the nyt casts doubts that the missus clinton has anything approaching experience that anyone can rely on. All we have to date is both bubba and his missus telling us that she is both gifted, intelligent and experienced and we know the clintons can be counted on for their veracity. For you intellectually challenged libs, that means truthfullness. Something experience tells us the clintons are total strangers to

You're right, Doc.
We'll not see their like again, sadly. It was a tribal thing that led to the "Greatest Generation." They were pulling together for the common good, bound by the same culture and traditions. And that's why they were able to accomplish so much. Now look at us. I fear for the country.

Doc
Greatest Generation, indeed.

My mother paid me a very high compliment this past Christmas. She is still shocked that I gave birth to my first child without the aid of an epidural! My comment was something along the lines of, "Well, you have no choice, Mom. She had to be born, and that's what I had to do."

She in turn, said to me, "Sometimes I'm amazed at the strength I see in you".

It was in Spanish, but you get the idea!

BTW, you have to 'train' your dad to be careful with the temptation the speed of a wheelchair puts in one's hands, literally!

YLG. Doc. Things to do. See you later.

are of the same nature...no real indepth background research as to why the decision ! so much about mitts flip flop...but look the other way for most of the other candidates.lol

A grumpy old cooks opinion
Like Dr Sowell, I am unimpressed. If Hillary is elected I believe that she will take down the Democratic Party and possibly the country. Obama spouts the same old failed socialist agenda. Guys, it doesn't work, never has, never will. Edwards appears to be a shyster lawyer and I do not hear anything that would make me think any different. Huckabee reminds me of Jimmy Swaggart. Need I say more? Romney is so polished. I can’t help but wonder what he will say he believes today. I would like to believe him but I have my doubts. John McCain seems to be a liberal Democrat in Republican’s clothing. Ron Paul is a libertarian but I do not think he has the ability to lead the country. If there were a couple hundred of like-minded congressmen with him then it might be a possibility. Giuliani can do it. He has a set and is not afraid. When I used to hang out in NYC in the 70’s you had better be packing heat. I returned in the 90’s to a city reborn. I walked up Broadway from the Wintergarden to Central Park without getting mugged or seeing a cop. Recently I walked up to 96th street at 10pm and crossed over to Riverside Drive. Not a problem. I think it will take a few years before that liberal Bloomberg screws everything up. I like Fred Thompson, straightforward, no bull. I think he will give me something I have not had for a long time. I want to believe that our government exists for something other than fleecing money from my pockets. I want real campaign finance reform so that only citizens can donate to a campaign of a candidate and party that they will be able to vote for. I want the employers of illegal immigrants prosecuted. I also think that Thompson and Giuliani will choose strict constructionalist judicial picks, if they can get elected. In the mean time I will pay off my debt and get ready for the worst.

Eat this right wingers
Dr. Sowell writes:
John Edwards is the easiest to peg. He looks just like the phony that he is.

How does somebody look phony? Can you define what phony looks like? He started out poor and ended up rich. Isn't that what makes America a great place?

Dr. Sowell writes:
His talk about poor children going to bed hungry may rouse the far left in his party but in fact the lowest-income people are even more obese than the rest of us, not that the facts make the slightest difference to Senator Edwards.
Since when is hunger in America a right or left wing subject. Just visit a food pantry and see all of the women and children waiting in line.

Here are the facts:
Here are the results for 2001-2002:
Less than $25,000: 32.5% obese
$25,000-$40,000: 31.3% obese
$40,000-$60,000: 30.3% obese
More than $60,000: 26.8% obese

Here's how much obesity increased in each category:
Less than $25,000: increase of 144 percent
$25,000-$40,000: increase of 194 percent
$40,000-$60,000: increase of 209 percent
more than $60,000: increase of 276 percent

After looking at the numbers I don’t see where the lowest income people are much more obese that the rest of us. They are about the same except for people above 60K a year. However it would appear the over 60K crowd will soon be pushing the low income folks out of first place based on their increase in obesity.

Dr. Sowell writes:
As an attorney, Edwards conned millions of dollars out of gullible juries, using junk science to create the impression that it was the fault of doctors when babies were born with birth defects.

Was Dr. Sowell on the jury for the case he describes above? If not does that make him a phony? Were the birth defects due to negligence by the doctor? Unless you were on the jury there is no way to know for sure.

"Too bad (religion, etc) is an issue"

There is one thing that bothers me about the "We ought to ignore the race/religion/sex" of the candidate mantra, is the following. We have Hillary running claiming BECAUSE of her sex, she is going to get millions of votes. Now, a lot of people hate Hillary, but I have heard people say they will vote for her just because she is a woman.

If people will vote FOR someone just because the person is a woman, or mormon, or whatever, and if that is OK, and it must be because Hillary keeps saying this, why isn't it OK if I vote against her because she is a woman?

Note, I do like to think if I felt Hillary were the best candidate I would vote for her, but I suspect I would not because she is claiming because of her sex she is getting these votes.

Also, I think I would be inclined to favor someone who would get merit based votes only. Someone like Fred Thompson, I think.

Why are you ignoring Ron Paul?
Dr. Sowell,

I probably agree with you 99% of the time, but I cannot believe your article today, which completely ignores the candidacy of Ron Paul.

What is going on? Paul is simply the best candidate in the free-market tradition since Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.

As you know, Ron Paul argues that it was a mistake to start the Iraq war, and a mistake to stay. The president's responsibilities under the Constitution are solely to our country and our troops. Since America would be safer if we left now, we should bring our troops home now. Not thousands of years from now when the Sunnis and Shiites finally "put aside their centuries-old differences."

Ron Paul also opposes the Patriot Act attack on the Bill of Rights, and opposes preemptive wars against countries that are no threat to us, such as Iran. Ron Paul, out of all the candidates, has received the highest contributions from U.S. military personnel.

I believe the biggest danger to our country is the neocons itching to start another war with Iran. Instead of blowing up a country with no nuclear weapons, we should focus on the biggest arsenal of nuclear weapons outside the U.S. Russia has thousands of loosely guarded nukes, one-third of their population is Muslim, and their military is poorly paid and ready to be bribed. We have been spending a paltry sum for 15 years to help them dismantle their nukes and safeguard their nuclear materials. But this effort pales in comparison to the amount squandered on wars against two countries with no nuclear weapons.

Given all this, I would appreciate your discussing your views on Ron Paul in a future article.

Sincerely,

Bruce K. Bell
Moorpark, CA

Why Paul goes unmentioned
Ron Paul wants to bring the troops home and stop our foreign interventionism. For some reason, and it grieves me, apparently Dr. Sowell does not. At least, that's my impression from other columns of his that I have seen in the past few years. If Paul scores big in Iowa or New Hampshire, I'm afraid Dr. Sowell will come out against him. I hope to be proven wrong.

Mitt "LOOKS" presidential?
And this is a meaningful gauge?

The best gauge for Mitt is that BUSH wants him. Bush belongs to the EVIL side of the republican party: brutal, aggressive interventionism, AMENSTY, high rates of immigration and visas which HARM the American people, globalism, expansion of federal power and the rise of the police-state.

McCain? Just remember he stood (and often stands) hand in hand with Ted Kennedy and he sponsored the SCAMNESTY BILL.

Sowell is a Big-Government Conservative
For all of those who are surprised at Dr. Sowell's failure to mention Ron Paul, you shouldn't be. Sowell is a neocon through and through. On economics he is OK. But he is a watered down Friedmanite. Milton Friedman was a good advocate for liberty but he accepted too much government. Most notably he supported a central bank and was an agnostic on the war issue. Sowell has carved a name for himself as a "black conservative" in juxtaposition to the black liberal Establishment. He is too ignorant much of a coward to challenge the fake Left/Right paradigm. He plays his role nicely.

Sowell a coward?
"Lysander Spooner"--Did you just call Thomas Sowell a coward? Do you happen to know anything about the man and his personal story, aside from not being 110% pure-enough libertarian for you? Not to mention Milton Friedman. I don't know who you are, but I suspect just one of Sowell's shoes would hold both your feet with room left for that smug ego. Do you actually want to help Ron Paul and the cause of liberty, or do you prefer going around sticking daggers in good people who don't meet your exacting standards of purity?

What other conclusion can I draw?
DocW,
Thanks for you comments.
What other conclusion can I draw? How can a self-described proponent of the free-market fail to mention the hand-down most free-market candidate in the race? I respected Milton Friedman a lot but I felt that he compromised with the socialists/interventionists too much. (Read Frieman Unraveled by Murray Rothbard: http://www.lewrockwell.com/rothbard/rothbard43.html) Did you know that Friedman was a supporter of Ron Paul. While Sowell is a neocon, I at least thought he was intellectually honest. I just think Sowell is comfortable in his place in the establishment. And by the way, this is no purity test issue for me. I'm an anarcho-capitalist but I'm supporting Ron Paul. Paul doesn't support zero government but he is the ONLY candidate proposing to reduce the size of government (not reduce the size of the growth). I'm willing to compromise on that.

The other conclusion...
...would be that Sowell doesn't favor Paul because he disagrees with Paul's foreign policy and sees it as a vital issue. Sowell had the guts to write Civil Rights: Rhetoric vs Reality and other books and columns that challenged faux civil rights dogma. He's no coward. Now you suggest he's not intellectually honest. Why can't he just be wrong?

But he didn't even mention him....
DocW,

But he didn't even mention him in the column. He offered no substantive critique of Dr. Paul's (Really Jefferson's and Quincy Adams') foreign policy. I don't consider a non-politician criticizing Civil Rights to be a great act of courage. Dr. Paul is promoting Constitutional government, which conservatives, including Sowell, over the past several decades claim they are for. Don't you find it the least bit strange that most of the conservative movement not only ignores him, but is downright hostile to his (the founders) ideas. Maybe you can offer me an explanation. The only conclusion I can draw is that all the conservative talk about individual liberty, private property and limited government has been rhetoric. Thanks for the civil discussion. If I may ask, who are you supporting and why?

I'm supporting Paul...
...probably for all the same reasons you are. I just don't think that people who agree with me on some things but disagree on other things are necessarily cowards or intellectually dishonest. The penalties for a black academic who challenges the "civil rights" orthodoxy are not insignificant, and were probably worse 25 years ago. You won't be shot, but your integrity will be impugned, you'll be shunned, ridiculed, and passed up for academic positions.
I did offer one reason why Sowell and many other conservatives may not favor Paul, namely, foreign policy. Many who favor a relatively free market economy have drawn what you and I may take to be incorrect conclusions from World War II and the Cold War. They may see non-interventionism as extremely dangerous. They may also fear that a negative public reaction to Ron Paul will poison the waters for achieving modest, gradual steps back toward more limited government.
I'm not arguing their case. I'm with Paul. There's a web site that compares your views to the expressed views of the candidates and I scored a 98% match with Ron Paul. I think we can best help him by sticking to the substantive merits of issues, resisting the temptation to make personal attacks. Sowell himself may not be amenable to persuasion, but some of his fans may.

Kennedy was a Mormon?
Every time somebody says Kennedy took what religion out of consideration in presidential politics I want to barf. Kennedy convinced most people that HIS Catholicism wasn't an issue. Even for other catholics who may believe they must ask for and follow the edicts of their church on all issues his speech did not apply. Basically he indicated he was willing to ignore church teachings or even direct instructions in matters of policy. People believed that; did we think that he and Jackie had carefully waited for her most fertile time, had sex, and waited to see if it "worked" as some catholic couples I know have done? I know one guy who has had carnal knowledge of his wife exactly three time, three kids. Were Marilyn Monroe and Sam Giacona's squeeze on the church's approved list of recreational activities? Since we decided that Jack's religion (or "faith" to use the modern euphemism) didn't matter to them (or him) did that take religion off the table forever? Santaria is OK? Voodoo? Satanic Mass? Wicca(witchcraft), Paganism, Church of the Sub-Genius (who worship a travelling salesman named Bob) or Peyote or Psilocybin mushroom based religions all get a pass, too? What this is the worship of tolerance as the first and greatest commandment, that's all.

Time is short.
It is my belief that we are not to far from a severe financial crisis. My animus is not just directed toward Sowell but all of the self-styled free-market advocates who are either ignoring Ron Paul and disparaging him. I include Cato, Club for Growth, Talk-Radio hosts, etc. I agree that the penalties for a black academic who opposed civil right were substantial when Sowell was starting out. However, Ludwig von Mises, who was probably the greatest economist of the 20th century couldn't secure a university position when he immigrated. He was too rigid or uncompromising. Again I ask, why didn't Sowell even mention Paul even to criticize him.

Mises...
...is an inspiration for sure!

Best wishes & hope for the New Year.

Lysander and Doc W Thank You
I agree with Lysander on one point, why doesn't Sowell even mention Paul? Does Sowell have that much contempt for Ron Paul?!

A question I'd like to ask is, isn't perpetual preemptive war, perpetual intervention, akin to the initiation of war? A kind of doublespeak? Isn't what makes a retaliatory war ultimately moral, unfortunately, the fact that a country has been attacked and it's citizens killed or harmed? At what point is 9/11 avenged? And to go beyond that point in the name of preemption, venture into the initiation of agression?

Maybe what we need is a proper definition of war, a proper philosophy of war. I'm reminded of that episode of Star Trek where war is waged by computer programs in hypothetical calculations and then citizens are led into vaporizing chambers. The Star Trek crew destroys the computers which forces the two warring planets to go back to actual, real war, becasue only the complete and real suffering and devastation of a real war is incentive enough for a final peace to come about

Primary Elections And Secondary Can.
If the Republicans do not come up with a candidate that can debate Oback Obama at his intellectual level then the election process may already be over.
