Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Some of the most depressing e-mails received over the past year and a half have been those that asked why I was worrying myself about three rich white guys at Duke University.

Neither those three students accused of rape nor the District Attorney who accused them are the ultimate issue.

If all District Attorneys in this country were like Michael Nifong, the United States of America would become the world's largest banana republic.

Such levels of corruption in the law itself would make the American standard of living impossible. A steady diet of the racial polarization that Nifong promoted would make it only a matter of time before we would see in America the kind of violence seen between Sunnis and Shiites in Baghdad.

The "rule of law" is not just a pat phrase. It is the foundation on which everything else is built.

Nor is "innocent until proven guilty" just a throwaway line. The opposite notion -- guilty until proven innocent -- is a more poisonous import from the totalitarian world than the toys with lead paint imported from China.

"Until Proven Innocent" is the title of a devastating new book by Stuart Taylor and K.C. Johnson about the rape charges against the Duke lacrosse players -- and about so many in the media and academia who treated them as guilty until they were proven innocent.

Even those of us who followed the case from the beginning will learn a lot more about what went on, both on the surface and behind the scenes, from this outstanding book.

More important, we will learn some chilling facts about how deep the moral dry rot goes in some of the fundamental institutions of this nation that we depend on, including its leading universities and its leading media.

"Until Proven Innocent" also tells us about one of the forgotten victims of the Duke rape case -- the African cab driver who cast the first doubt on the indictment, by saying publicly that one of the accused young men was with him in his taxi at the time the rape was supposedly happening.

A flimsy charge against that cab driver from three years earlier was suddenly resurrected, and District Attorney Michael Nifong had him picked up by the police, indicted and put on trial -- where he was quickly acquitted by the judge.

Could this country survive as a free nation if every District Attorney used the power of that office to intimidate any witness whose testimony undermined the prosecution's case?

How long will we in fact survive as a free nation when our leading universities are annually graduating thousands of students each, steeped in the notion that you can decide issues of right and wrong, guilt or innocence, by the "race, class and gender" of those involved?

That is what a large chunk of the Duke University faculty did, while few of the other faculty members dared to say anything against them or against the Duke administration's surrender to the lynch mob atmosphere whipped up on campus.

In much of the media as well, the students were treated as guilty until proven innocent, and those who said otherwise were often savaged.

Members of the women's lacrosse team at Duke who expressed their belief that the male lacrosse players were innocent were viciously attacked in the sports section of the New York Times.

Nor was that the only place where the guilt of the players was virtually taken for granted, on either the sports pages of the Times or in other places there or in other newspapers. However, let me correct a misstatement that I made recently in this column to the effect that the Times' editorial page gave the same impression as its news coverage that the accused students were guilty.

An e-mail from the editor of that page says that there was no editorial on that subject. After a preliminary investigation, I am willing to concede that point and make this correction. The sports pages, the news pages and the editorial page are different things.

I only wish that others in the media and in academe would offer their corrections on far broader and more serious issues with far deeper implications for the future of this country.

That prosecution of the cab driver
was what made me start to think the whole thing was bogus. WHY would he give an alibi that wasn't true?

The race-baiters always want us at each other's throats, so THEY can come in and "guide us to enlightenment."

Corruption of Some Sort --
-- will always be with us.

All we can do is hope that there will always be some reckoning for those, or at least most of those, who engage in corruption.

Fortunately, in this case at least, Nifong was punished. Not serious enough a punishment in my view, but at least punished.

So long as we can always bring these wrong-doings to light, and bring about some sort of punishment, I think there is still some hope.

Not much, but some.

TwoBright Sides...
Nobody outside Durham defends Mike Nifong's actions.

Nobody outside Durham has agreed with the actions of the Duke faculty.

RUN FOR PRESIDENT
Dear Dr. Sowell,

Please run for the highest office of this great land.

You would easily defeat any person ona debate about the issues since you stick to the issues and point out when others don't.

You are my favorite writer out there when it comes to politics, history and obviously economics.

Even if you feel you don't have a chance your presence at debates and speeches would raise and answer many questions.

At the very least you would show the Republican Party what it's platform should be and why it should be that way.

I have never donated money to a campaign but if you ever decided to run I would donate money and campaign for you because I have never read an article or book by you that I disagreed with. Even if I disagreed with the topic or point before hand you always showed me why you though the way you did and you were able to show me why your opinion was not opinion but fact.

Like I said you NEED to run because even if you don't feel you have a chance at least you would raise and answer questions others won't because they are uninformed or scarred.

RUN BABY RUN!!!!!!!!

THe spirit of the law
When was the last time you heard someone use that phrase?

The spirit of the law has been replaced by the letter of the law, and it was done by prosecutors who got tired of hearing juries say, "Give us a break, this man is innocent. He should never have been charged."

Juries aren't asked to find guilt or innocence, but are asked to find "facts." "Was he holding the gun?" "Did he pull the trigger?" "If so, you must find him guilty." Never mind that he was protecting his life and family. (It probably isn't this way everywhere) Had the term "judgement" ever come into the case, charges probably would never have been filed, and millions in legal and associated fees would never have been paid.

If anyone in the government dared to use "judgement" we wouldn't have school principals calling the police when a five year old acts up. Use your judgement to solve the problem and risk a lawsuit. Better to spend ten thousand county dollars on a pesky five-year old. Better hire more cops. More lawyers too. Funny how that works out.

In Tuesday's debate, one of the republican candidates called for reigning in this kind of abuse. And to do that, a "loser pays" system is mandatory.

The Essence Of The PC Terror
"How long will we in fact survive as a free nation when our leading universities are annually graduating thousands of students each, steeped in the notion that you can decide issues of right and wrong, guilt or innocence, by the 'race, class and gender' of those involved?"

Compare that to the following:

"The Extraordinary Commission is neither an investigating commission nor a tribunal. It is an organ of struggle, acting on the home front of a civil war. It does not judge the enemy: it strikes him... We are not carrying out war against individuals. We are exterminating the bourgeoisie as a class. We are not looking for evidence or witnesses to reveal deeds or words against the Soviet power. The first question we ask is - to what class does he belong, what are his origins, upbringing, education or profession? These questions define the fate of the accused. This is the essence of the Red Terror." -- M. Y. Latsis. Communist secret police official.

If any clearer indication of the pedigree of our rampant "political correctness" were required, or any clearer delineation of its aims, I can't imagine what it might be.

Why bother???
Why does a black man defend "a bunch of rich white boys"?

Thank you, Dr. Sowell, for defending our country and one of its founding principles. There is only one race - the HUMAN race. That statement should be demonstrated as true ESPECIALLY in THIS great country. If not here; where?

F. W. Porretto
Your comparison underscores the reason why the left went after Judge Thomas so viciously - he just would not follow the script. In my estimation, the judiciary has already been severely compromised to the point that in some states, for the politically incorrect, justice does not exist.

I think this election coming up is the first stage of the socialist takeover - they are primed to make their move. Considering how the left has had a strangle hold on the educational institutions, K through graduate school, the major portions of the media, control of most state, federal, and many private institutional bureaucracies, a controlling portion of the legal profession, significant judicial control, safe electoral positions in all government bodies and a major portion of the population dependent and ignorant, the plum seems ready for the picking.

Many of us lesser folks could see this coming and worked hard to get people into elective office over the last eight years and despite a war effort, they spent an historical opportunity with majorities in both houses and the presidency, cowering over their own interests, dithering over insignificant and trumped social concerns like GW and race while voting themselves tons of pork.

Practically nothing, other than the tax cuts that stimulated an already over taxed and regulated economy, was done to sidetrack the socialists' pressures. And Bush turned out to be in many ways their useful idiot.

While even Western Europe is trying to free itself from socialist slavery, it appears this stupid population can't wait to embrace it. And Mrs. Clinton may lead the revolution.

Does this all this sound far fetched?

Opinion at the Times
With all due respect to Dr. Sowell, I dispute whether there is a difference between the "news" pages of the NYT and the editorial pages. A better slogan for the NYT would be "All the liberal propaganda that fits in print."

"Catch as catch can" is right...
Thomas Sowell, Dr. Walter Williams & Alan Keyes would be the best at running our constitutional republic.

(They would prove what racists the party of KKK Byrd consists of.)

I nominate Dr. Sowell for a Nobel
"I only wish that others in the media and in academe would offer their corrections on far broader and more serious issues with far deeper implications for the future of this country."

Would love to meet this guy for 5 minutes. He would make a great president but has already graced our nation via his activities at present (antisocialist: not so sure about Keyes as president, though good man).

I got out of academia upon seeing that PC thought police were gaining across the entire country and there was no room for a while make with libertarian/conservative views in social science. The dynamic over the past two decades has been that there are less and less people teaching in "higher ed" (ironic phrase when half of Princeton can't tell you what the Boston Tea Party was now) with views that are even moderate, much less conservative. Why?

1. Most left after getting a Ph.D. for a nonacademic field. Who needs it?

2. The masochists who stay either end up not making 3rd year review, not making tenure, or having to adopt the communist party line to fit in.

PEOPLE! Stop funding these bastions of B.S. Or at least send your kids to alternative schools. That way, perhaps they will get to read von Mises, Sowell, C.S. Lewis, the great thinkers of our time. Instead of titles like, "Lesbian love between cows in Alabama," "My Daddy was a Marine who killed and ate babies for months," and this sort of absurd, bogus, baloney. Get your kids OUT of this world, because Dr. Sowell is right in that these college students are being corrupted, and dumbed down, by being exposed to a wave of nonsense. And often the purveyors are quite honest about their intentions to overthrow Western civ. and philosophy.

Profound and Brave
Dr. Sowell's profound observations and erudite comments here are perhaps the finest I've ever read in his columns. It also take a level of bravery in today's PC climate.

I firmly believe that we are well into class warfare engineered by the liberals over the past 50 plus years. I fear we are nearing the point of no return, if we have not already passed it. Logic and reason no longer prevails, feelings
take precedence, truth and fact no longer matter.

"Nick in Austin" has it right judgment is dead! The reason it is dead is, that if one exercises judgment one can be held accountable for it. NOBODY wants to be responsible for anything these day, especially people in positions of authority! Leadership is therefor also dead! When was the last time you heard a person in authority say "I decided" and "follow me this way"? Plausible deny-ability prevails where judgment is required. Blame it on something or someone else if things go wrong or people don't like the outcome. When I was in the military we used to say of someone like this they need to "Lead, follow, or get the he** out of the way!"

Profound and Brave (cont)
If I sound discouraged, I AM! As far as I can see NO ONE with leadership ability is running for office. Issues are not addressed, sound bites, photo ops, name calling, mud slinging and character assassination has taken the place of issues! Some say politics has always been that way - and I will grant them that. However, not to the degree and extent it now exists. Truth, facts and issues no longer matter, what matters is what you can get people to accept and believe. And this leads back to lack of judgment, as people no longer evaluate, no longer judge the validity of things, they seldom are able to discriminate between truth and bull sh**. Those who know the facts and tell the truth are savagely attacked, lied about, their character is assassinated with impunity, with the explicit help of the media and their lives utterly destroyed. Its getting worse by the year and I see no end to it.

Truth and facts are now considered relative! If the facts do not fit the desired goal - they are not facts. If the truth conflicts with the desired outcome, then its not truth. If you are caught in a lie, you blame others and deny responsibility or accountability. Abraham Lincoln said "You can fool some of the people all of the time, you can fool all of the people, some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." In his day that was true, I do not believe that its is true today.

It's corruption and sadly racism...
Another great article by the Dr...

The Duke case sadly exhibits the corruption and racism in our society. We've made huge gains, but we still have a long way to go. It's too bad that some people asked Dr. Sowell why he was worried about three rich white guys. Even more disturbing was the actions of the Duke staff and their cowardly eagerness to seem racially sensitive and politically correct.

All of the cowardly bastards attending to the lynching of the three young men, are now cowaring under their secular progressive desks with their favorite stuffed animal.

I usually frown on personal injury lawsuits, but in this case, I'm looking forward to the arse whipping the cowards are going to get over this one.

Thomas Sowell
"If all District Attorneys in this country were like Michael Nifong, the United States of America would become the world's largest banana republic."

If? Watch http://www.afterinnocence.com/ and read http://www.afterinnocence.com/

I agree
with everything Sowell is saying here, except that I don't think the "Banana Republic" thing is off in the future. I think it is now. Sure it appears we still have most of our basic laws in tact, but they are being eroded every day.

Politicians and judges demonstrate every day that they will do what ever they d--n well please and they don't care if it is illegal or contrary to the Constitution.

I think this all started with the income tax, a tax that was never ratified by the states, was suspect by the states that did approve it, but was instituted anyway because certain people knew it would be the end of true freedom.

Not that one example is proof...

Dr. Sowell writes:
**How long will we in fact survive as a free nation when our leading universities are annually graduating thousands of students each, steeped in the notion that you can decide issues of right and wrong, guilt or innocence, by the "race, class and gender" of those involved?**

Apparently, you can decide issues of leadership on race, class, and gender as well. This was made clear to me by a left-leaning friend recently. She posited that "it would be really great if Hillary and Obama win next year, because we would have a woman and an African-American leading the country."

I asked her what leadership qualities she sees in them that I'm missing, because while sure, it would be nice to see a woman in charge, I'm not so sure that Hillary should be that woman. Or that Obama has any leadership experience whatsoever.

Her insightful reply? Adapting the words of Satchmo when asked "What is jazz?", she said "If you don't see the significance of a woman and an African American being elected, then it's not even worth talking about with you."

That's all it's about to her - the perceived "significance."

And she teaches history to junior high school children.

Yikes.

Sowell
Once again Sowell writes the truth. What makes events like this so sad to me is that so many people believe anything they read in a paper or see on TV. The press and race baiters had these kids jailed, sentenced and hung, all in the same day. I wonder how much money did the race hustlers make off this? Shame on them. Black Americans, please wake up and quit supporting the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Most white people are not " out to put the black man down or keep the black man in his place." This is 2007 not 1957.

For so many, it's ONLY about color
Too bad, so many on the left, and too many on the right, seem to think that color/gender are deciding factors in political races - to the extent that it trumps all other factors.

When Romney (R) left government in Massachusetts, he was replaced by a Black Governor (D). It seemed to me that the folks in MA didn't really care what he stood for, only that he was Black. In all the pre-election coverage, there was virtually NO investigative reporting on this man, other than that he was Black, and would be the first Black Governor of that state, and how proud everyone could be if only they could open their minds to the idea of a Black Governor.

Apparently, that was enough, because he won, and now they're paying the price, because he rescinded all the laws that Romney put in place to curtail the Leftist agenda (waaay too late in his term), and has taken off on a tax raising/spending bender that would make your hair curl.

NOW, finally - a year AFTER the election, the media in MA seems to think that some of what he's doing is contrary to what he campaigned on (lowering taxes), and that maybe being Black is not sufficient enough reason to vote for someone. Whew, thank god we have the free press to help us decide who to vote for in elections. They were so helpful in that one - only a year or two later.

The national media is doing the exact same thing now - only with Hillary and Obama. What possible relevance is there in knowing their Race/Gender? Who cares?

They're also trying to promote Guliani like the second coming. Be aware. When the Leftist media wants someone as badly as they want Guliani, be wary. They know he can't win, so they're pushing him hard.

Note, too, how hard they're all being on Thompson. I wonder why?

Dr. Sowell! My head nods in wonder......
.....at the wisdom that just flows forth from this column, as I might add, from almost all of your writings.

As an academic yourself, please give us some hints at where we might find others of your bent and find the published and/or spoken wisdom that they put forth.

It seems that you are among the last of those with your intellectual abilities. That is, of course, very depressing to those of us looking for reinforcement of our (political and moral) beliefs. Please, if you will, point us to others that we might be encouraged, that all is not lost, and there really is (or at least might be) a future for this country in the originalist thinking?

Thomas Sowell's hate of his own people!
Let me first say that I'm glad that all three Duke Lacrosse players were acquitted of all charges. Let me also say that the over zealous prosecutor should be held accountable for his actions.

But I also would like to make this observation:

I find it interesting what a travesty Sowell thought this was that our legal system would fail these 3 white privileged college students, and how silent he and other pandering self hating conservatives were on the legal failures in Jena and other incidents involving racism towards blacks.

Where was his outrage over that?

Where was his column condemning the legal system in Jena?

Sowell writes:
"Such levels of corruption in the law itself would make the American standard of living impossible"

Indeed it would.... for some.

Let’s also remember that like the Jena 6 case, the accused parties involved were not innocent of immoral behavior. The Lacrosse students were at a drunken party where they hired a stripper for to do God knows what. And there is still a lot unknown about what actually went on.

You know what...Let’s forget about the Jena 6 for a second. Where was this extreme indictment of the American Justice system when 17 year old Genarlow Wilson received a 10 year sentence (which has been overturned due to us "race baiters" protesting) for have consensual oral sex with a 15 year old girl?

No article then, huh Mr. Sowell? Hmm.. Wonder why? I guess African Americans are not good enough to have equal protection under the law according to him.

wow
Did it happen again? Didn’t Duke learn the first time? Wait, no, it’s the same old case we’re rehashing. Hmm, now what cha I add? I know: liberals are bad; conservatives are good, the system is against the white man and vote Quimby.

Hey! I‘ve got a good one. See how Sowell claims, “The "rule of law" is not just a pat phrase. It is the foundation on which everything else is built”? That’s good stuff. Now, can anyone cast their memory back to the year 2007 when some conservatives were making a case for how bad Clinton was for following the rule of law? Some even made a clever little turn of phrase to ridicule it. I spoke out in support of the rule of law just like Sowell did and was in turn ridiculed. In short, I say it = bad. Sowell says it = good. You may now return to your regularly scheduled litany of how liberals are hypocrites, have no memory, are PC terrorists, are socialists, are commies, are Nazis, are Godless, controls the schools, control the courts, control the media, control Hollywood, hate America, want to destroy the world, lover terrorists, have no brains……zzzzzzzzzzz

T Sowell's hate of his own people! p2
Take note Towhhall posters. read these next few lines very carefully:

THIS IS WHY BLACK CONSERVATIVES ARE HATED BY THE VAST MAJORITY OF AFRICAN AMERICANS! AND THIS IS WHY THEY ARE CONSIDERED TO BE SELF-HATERS:

A black conservatives will run to point out an injustice that a white person has experienced, but will either stay silent or attempt to minimize or invalidate ("was this really racism, blacks are just being paranoid") accusations of unequal treatment that African Americans receive.

Hey, at least the Duke Lacrosse defendants could afford a lawyer to fight the "corrupt" justice system. Cause if they were poor and black they'd probably be in jail at this very moment.

Wichita Massacre
I'm a Kansan; I was here; I know. To call the Cox brothers animals would be an insult to animals. And thanks to our liberal governor and legal system, they sit in jail, fat and happy, instead of being executed as they should have been were there any justice. In fact, I was surprised that they were sentenced to death, since they're black.

Hey Anthony
"Cause if they were poor and black they'd probably be in jail at this very moment."

Are you serious?

Let's imagine that the exact same allegations were made against members of the Duke basketball team by a white stripper. Can you possibly believe that their season would be summarily cancelled, Coach K. would be fired, and 88 faculty members would take out a full-page ad condemning them before there was even an investigation, let alone a trial? Not a chance.

Instead, the same race-obsessed liberals that immediately proclaimed the lacrosse players guilty would be urging "calm," lecturing us not to "rush to judgement" until the facts were in, and probably slandering the accuser. The NYT would be probing the background of this white-trash stripper (certainly not referring to her as a "dancer"), out to tarnish the reputations of these poor guys who were probably just victims of circumstance.

Rock
Great analogy...Dr. Sowell is taking the black cause into the 21st. century and Anthony is living in the early 20th. century. Rather than whining about racism, Dr. Sowell has put it behind him and has earned the respect of all clear thinking people regardless of ethnic background.

Auntie Tom 10:36am
I note that you are still on the Democratic (or Liberal Left) Plantation.

Instead of stating your reasons for a disagreement with Mr. Sowell's article, you SHOUT the "talking points" that were handed to you this morning when "all the plantation workers" went to the fields.

This probably plays well on the West Coast or in New York City. But here in the "Middle" of the USA, us "country bumpkins" have seen through your disguise.

Mr. Sowell is an intelligent MAN. His skin color is not the question here. He has written an intelligent, well thought out article.

But you attack his race. It seems to this "country bumpkin" that you are the racist.

Rock Strongo
First to compare Duke basketball and Duke Lacrosse teams is completly ridiculus sir. Duke Lacrosse doesn't bring in 1/50 of the money that the basketball team does to the school.

Of course the school would be more willing to protect their cash cow, the basketball team, over the Lacrose team. There's was not as much to be loss by canceling the Lacrosse season.

A fair comparison would be to say what if the Lacrosse players were black ? Then what would happen?

jena 6?
Like writer Anthony Thomas, I too would like to hear Sowell's thoughts on the so-called Jena 6. I do have to confess that I am not very sympathectic toward's the "Jena 6". I understand the fact that there was a lot of name calling and racist's things done and said by both sides prior to the beating. However, I can not in any form or fashion, condone a savage beating such as these six kids committed.

Anthony
"A fair comparison would be to say what if the Lacrosse players were black ? Then what would happen?"

I'll tell you what would happen:

The same race-obsessed liberals that immediately proclaimed the white lacrosse players guilty would be urging "calm," lecturing us not to "rush to judgement" until the facts were in, and probably slandering the accuser. The NYT would be probing the background of this white-trash stripper (certainly not referring to her as a "dancer"), out to tarnish the reputations of these poor guys who were probably just victims of circumstance.

A. Thomas

For role models perhaps you could look to Dr Rice, Gen Powell, Bill Cosby to name a few,
what is wrong with them from your view? or even Jusice Thomas?

They are strong, confident and successful.

When
When will the Duke 88 apologize to the Duke 3?

Probably when Lucifer wears ice skates.

A. T., talk about self-hate!
I think you should seriously consider your stance on Sowell. You MIGHT be guilty of projection - accusing someone else of something you are engaging in, or WOULD engage in if you were in that person's position.

The only thing RACIAL about Sowell's column is the publicity photo by the title; the man is obviously black. Other than that, he's defending a fundamental principle on which this country was founded. The principle of innocent-until-proven-guilty was enumerated in our founding documents and is threatened by the Duke case and other similarly egregious miscarriages of justice.

Race seems to be the LEAST of Sowell's concerns. Why is it so important to you, Anthony?

BTW, Sowell let the dust settle on the Duke LaCrosse case before he penned this column. You may be premature in accusing him of silence in the Jena matter.

orlandocajun
"Rather than whining about racism, Dr. Sowell has put it behind him and has earned the respect of all clear thinking people regardless of ethnic background"

Well actually your wrong, this article is about racism, if you read it. It's about so called racism towards whites. This is the type of racism that Sowell defends. That was my original point.

phileo
"The principle of innocent-until-proven-guilty was enumerated in our founding documents and is threatened by the Duke case and other similarly egregious miscarriages of justice"

Yes I know. My point is that Sowell only cares about these issues when whites are the victims of it. He never writes about our terrible justice system when blacks are the victims of it. Never.

"You may be premature in accusing him of silence in the Jena matter."

No I'm not. I have not seen a column where he has condemned the justice system in Louisiana. If he has, point me to it.

What about Genarlow Wilson? Where was his "wisdom" then?

Oversight
The Governor of NC and his Attorney General took too long in moving in on review of Nifong. Maybe even the US Attorney General sat around without sending the the FBI to see what the hxx was going on.

There must be some oversight capability available for issues like this.

I'm still wondering about the culpability of the President of Duke, and a bunch of low life professors.

What about the status of the Coach that was fired [in disgrace]?

We may have the same problem in Jena.

Col. DOUG

Being A Liberal Means

What a Load of Buffalo Bagels!

Being A Liberal Means
NEVER having to say you’re sorry, because your heart was in the right place!

What a Load of Buffalo Bagels!

Homerun time again
Another great column by Dr. Sowell as he attempts to enlighten the libtards and the race baiters as to why it is a bad thing for this kind of thing to happen. I am afraid though that Dr. Sowell’s point is lost on the race baiters. As I expected, they showed up to attack Dr. Sowell and impugn his motives because he hasn’t jumped on the Jena6 hoax bandwagon or the poor unfortunate who was convicted of statutory rape of a 15 year old. LOL, he is a LUCKY punk who forgot that old saying that most of us men learned early…..15 will get you 20. On top of that he was so STUPID he filmed the whole thing. He could have been sentenced under the federal child pornography laws to a much deeper sentence.

Yes, I believe the banana republic days are already with us with DAs running rampant and using laws for things that they were not intended for. But among all of this let us not forget what the founders put in place to protect against DAs like Nifong. The jury system and the Grand Jury are there to prevent this. First the GJ has to vote for a "true bill" in order to get an indictment. What did Nifong tell (or not tell) the GJ that caused there to be an indictment? Secondly, a jury can vote their conscience no matter what the law says and contrary to what the judges like to tell you.

So the next time you get called for jury or grand jury duty don’t hold it as some inconvenience that must be avoided or simply "put up with". Look at it as a safeguard of the Republic and as your moral duty.

Dr. Sowell-Simply The best
Reading Dr. Sowell's columns is a true intellectual feast. The facts are unemotionally, rationally, and correctly laid out. Logical conclusions are drawn from the facts. There are never any supposition or assumptions - no name calling or demagoguery. I'm sure many readers on the left side of the political spectrum disagree with him politically, but I have never seen them find any chinks in the weight of the arguments he presents.

It's the old classic question. If you had to choose one person you do not know personally to have lunch with who would have a long, candid conversation with you, who would it be? For me, it would be Dr. Sowell.

Would that we would be so lucky that he would run for political office. I know he will not, but we can hope he continues to enlighten the rest of us with his writing and observations.

Thanks, Dr. Sowell.

Vic
Great point about jury duty. Believe it or not, once you participate as a juror and in the deliberation process, you will find it a humbling and enriching experience.

Anthony and Jena
What is the latest from Jena? From what I read there's plenty of blame for everyone in that community, black and white.

Towit:

What was the principal supposed to do when the school board overturned his decision to expel the white students?

Is it true that some of the black students involved had criminal (albeit) juvenile records so claims to have never been in legal trouble were not true?

If 12% of one's community has grievances wouldn't it behoove the remainder of the community to at least listen to those grievances?

If a young man shows great promise on the football field, should he be shielded from being accountable for his behavior off of the football field?

vic
Vic says this about the Genarlow Wilson case:

"he is a LUCKY punk who forgot that old saying that most of us men learned earlyearly…..15 will get you 20. On top of that he was so STUPID he filmed the whole thing. He could have been sentenced under the federal child pornography laws to a much deeper sentence."

Yet I'm supposed to believe that conservatives aren't racist?

Your post is disgusting Vic, which makes me think you are a disgusting person.

Do you know how many 17 year old boys have sex with 15 year old girls? All of them! Why do you think the penalty was overturned? It was a harsh penalty that was unfairly given out. But I guess for you it was ok as long as the recipient of it was black.

See unlike you, I'm not a "race baiter" as you called me indirectly. I just ask for fairness and consistency in our judicial system, no matter what color one is. See I condemned what happened to the Duke players in my post. I never said they were "lucky punks" who deserve what they got. But according to you blacks who receive unfair treatment of the legal system get it because they obvious deserve it. Your post is one of the most racist I have seen on Townhall.com. You have revealed your true colors with you ignorance, indifference and bias towards blacks who have been unfairly treated by the justice system

Anthony T.
You are the most racist poster I have seen on Townhall.

And I will not try to argue either of the two cases that you referenced for two reasons:

1. They have NOTHING to do with Dr. Sowell's column and you, like all liberal trolls, are only trying to change the subject rather than engage Dr. Sowell's facts.

2. It is useless to attempt to debate a racist like you. That old saying still holds true about hammers and nails. To a race baiter, every issue is racism.

Dr. Sowell shows true class
I am a long-time fan of Dr. Sowell, mostly for the obvious truth in his easy-to-understand arguments. Most pundits would not bother to correct the record over a minor error, such as the note on the NY Times in today's column. His pursuit of truth compels the man to correct even his minor errors, a lesson for us all.

zzx375
"Is it true that some of the black students involved had criminal (albeit) juvenile records so claims to have never been in legal trouble were not true?"

I beginning to believe that you TH posters are partisan zombies who do not know how to think or read for yourselves.

I said this in my first post:

"Let’s also remember that like the Jena 6 case, the accused parties involved were not innocent of immoral behavior."

My point was not to paint the Jena 6 as moral angels. But was to point out that the legal system failed in BOTH cases and that self-haters like Sowell only condemn the "corrupt" legal system when whites are the victims of it. And to inform Th posters that this sort of bias is why many black conservatives are hated and repudiated by most African Americans. Get it.

vic
Vic says this referring to the Jena 6 case and Genarlow Wilson:

"They have NOTHING to do with Dr. Sowell's column"

Wow!!! I could have sworn this article was about race and the corrupt American Justice System as stated by Sowell himself:

"Such levels of corruption in the law itself would make the American standard of living impossible. A steady diet of the racial polarization that Nifong promoted would make it only a matter of time before we would see in America the kind of violence seen between Sunnis and Shiites in Baghdad."

Am I reading the wrong article VIC? Are you?

Heck I was just wondering where was allthis tough talk when the Jena 6 and the Genarlow Wilson case went down.

"It is useless to attempt to debate a racist like you. That old saying still holds true about hammers and nails. To a race baiter, every issue is racism"

I provided facts and analysis in my post about why I believe you and others (Sowell included) are racist against blacks. And your response is to call me a racist, and to provide this sorry, witless, cliché as proof: “To a race baiter, every issue is racism"

Good job. Have a nice day my friend.

Anthony Thomas
Anger and attacking the character of the writer is your mode of operation as usual. Oh well, you provide comic relief.

Your comparison of the Duke players vs. the Jenna 6 is pretty shallow. The Duke students did not have a record of wrong doing (except disapproval of having a party with a stripper. Horrors, this has never been done before! How evil.) The Jenna 6 had records especially the "kicker" and we saw his conduct with our own eyes through video. Previous assault and an actual vicious assault rendered him a very possible criminal type who shouldn't be unleashed on the public. In the end, even without the marches, the system worked and the charge was lowered.

America
Without Law and Justice only Chaos will eventually rule, eventually. Which I supposedly believe the Socialist want, so the sheep will give them permission to take control and bring peace. However, what we will get will be Oppression and Enslavement. How about the guy who flushed the Koran, is he receiveing justice - NO. How about the kid who drew a gun in school and got suspended - did he receive justice - NO. Did we hear anyone screaming about the injustices by Democrats regarding Travelgate and how Hillary and her attack dogs destroyed solid citizens who worked hard for this Government. How about Hillary and her atttack dogs going after all those whom Bill Violated - we suppose to listen and believe Women when they cry rape, unless it is against one of their own Socialist Liberal Leaders like Bill or Hillary. Our Courts are a Joke and these Socialist/Liberal Attack dogs will step on any who stand in there way and the Liberals in the Judicial, & Legislative Branches will support them as well as the Socialists in the Media. When will America Wake UP? I don't believe we can save America at the ballot box, which has already been prestuffed with Socialist votes and those who don't know what they are doing. Review, "Seven Days in May" and pray our Military will save us before the Demonrats destroy America. Slavery & Oppression, maybe you should review your choices. Our Generation isn't deserving as our previous generations who sacrificed and fought and died protecting Americans and their Freedoms. Now the Democrats are attacking all our rights and the sheep follow blindly to our doom. Your own children, after the Liberal Indoctrination from the MSM and Academia will vote Democrat and refuse to see the truth for what it is. Will they ever experience freedom again once they have turned over all rights back to Government. Take Note: The right to bear arms is also on their Agenda!!!!

So sad, Anthony
You said: "I [sic] beginning to believe that you TH posters are partisan zombies who do not know how to think or read for yourselves."

Is that all you can do when you're so wrong; attack the other posters by accusing them of the very things that are wrong about you?
You continually try to tell us that the Sun is cold and the Moon is hot. When we don't accept such utter nonsense that your hatred spouts, you react with more of the same viscious diatribes fraught with so many of the same inaccuracies and outright lies that many in this forum have debunked over and over again.
I wonder, what hatred and self-loathing drives you to continue to incessantly behave this way?

Jimmy D
I love that movie! Burt Lancaster attempts a military coup and is thwarted by his adjutant Kirk Douglas. Of course those Hollywood liberals made the commie fighting general’s attempted treason seem bad somehow. We all know that the liberals are trying to destroy freedom, liberty and democracy; and the only way we can stop them is to destroy it first by setting up a military dictatorship. Now excuse me while I search under my bed for commies.

Loco: you are so right. Did you ever notice how all those bad Liberals always refer to Senator Kennedy as the “swimmer” or drunkard or make some reference to that incident that happened 38 years ago? That’s just the way liberals operate.

Anthony Thomas
I'm beginning to think that this guy is really "Robert" who kind of disappeared. I don't think that either of them are that stupid. I think that they're screwing with us for their entertainment. I, for one, am going to ignore their insane posts from now on and focus on people over 13 years old.

I said this:

Independent thinker said this:

Woow!! Did you read my entire post? What am I wrong about? Specifics please!

Independent thinker says this:

????????????? What are you talking about?

He (or she continues)

"When we don't accept such utter nonsense that your hatred spouts, you react with more of the same viscious diatribes fraught with so many of the same inaccuracies and outright lies that many in this forum have debunked over and over again"

What Nonsense? What hatred? What vicious diatribes? What inaccuracies? What Outright lies? Where have they been debunked?

Can you please provide some specifics or proof for these slanderous accusations.

I have provided evidence and analysis for what I believe. Is this all that you offer as a rebuttal? Pathetic.

Nope, just Anthony Thomas. Have never posted under anything else in the 4 or 5 months that I have posted

Reread the post. you completly missed the boat. My post was not about the moral virtues of neither the Duke Lacrosse players or the Jena 6. But about about the criminal justice system and how Sowell only condemns it when a white person is the victim of it.

Also what about Genarlow Wilson case ?

Did this case not deserve his attention.

The Jena 6 v the Duke 3
The difference between the Duke players and the Jena thugs is that those were innocent of the crime and these are guilty of verified attempted murder. In fact, in the Duke case, there was no crime at all - except on the part of the lying victim

In Jena a boy got his head stove in. You may disagree that it was attempted murder - to do so means thinking that attacking an unconscious man constitutes a fight, and kicking him in the head mere battery - because he, against medical advice and with serious wounds to his head, left the ER after 3 hours to attend a social function.

Attempted murder does not depend on the condition of the victim: If I shoot at you, unlikely, and miss, also unlikely, it is attempted murder, absent self-defense. Were I to use the "but he's not hurt" plea, you'd rightly point to the bullet in the wall, so don't YOU use the victim's condition to worm THEIR way out of the truth.

Since the victim of the Duke case was lying about the whole supposed crime, there are no parallels between the cases. She couldn't even make the charge of attempted rape because they didn't attempt anything.

It doesn't matter if the Jena victim made fun of the criminals for crashing the party. That can't justify murder, avoided only by the intervention of others, unless murder is part of their culture. Other incidents, the pep rally nooses or the theft of a gun, had nothing to do with the vicious attack in the school.

It was an adult crime, it should be treated as such. The criminals' athletic prowess should not stand in the way of their vigorous prosecution, as it had in the past.

Evil knows no color. To defend criminals on the basis of their race is to demonstrate racism. It is no less heinous to defend those who attack the defenseless than to attack in the first place.

Schools are a government monopoly because
they're an effective way to indoctrinate
future taxpayers and subjects.

Special ed for Thomas:

The issue at Duke is not about racist blacks screwing whites. It is about a district attorney who wanted to get elected. By making a big deal of prosecuting innocent white guys he could fool uneducated blacks like you that he was protecting the black community. Nifong knew that blacks like dont think too well like Sowell and others. He was right.

The univ and the press are already programmed to see blacks as victims and white boys as evil. The same thing happenned in the Tawanda Brawlery case with your hero Shartpon; i know you dont like him; but you are no different,

The duke boys were IMMORAL. Give me a break; they are young with hormones going. Did you ever call MLK immoral for sleeping with woman and breaking his marriage vows. IF you post that MLK was immoral then I forgive you for calling the Duke players immoral for paying someone to strip. Gee, that is not immoral; there is nothing in the Bible about stripping but there is about adultery. Tongue tied now.

LS
Both white and black kids behaved badly in that situation, but only the black kids were charged with anything.

I guess when the white kid ran to the truck to get his gun, it wasn't attempted murder either? He was gonna shoot deer right? What do you think would have happened had the black kids not wrestled the gun away? A white kid also hit a black kid over the head with a bottle , no charges. The bias is unbelievable.

is anthony a special needs student
You say jena 6 not immoral; they only knocked unconscious a innocent guy walking to class; kept kicking him and could have killed him unless stopped.

Not immoral? I that is not immoral, I guess lynching of blacks was not immoral. Where did you go school? The prsoecutor because of previous record wanted to put this guy away for a long time and filed adult charges; this is legal and done all the time. Due process was given; compare to duke where no due process; and eventually adult charges dropped. There was no miscarriage of justice; the best you could argue was the DA made a wrong judgement; but it was within the law.

Oral sex case. I think i silly but that is beside the point. There was a law; the law was repealed but they did not make it retroactive, That a law is stupid is not new. But it has nothing to do with racism; look at your buddy bill clinton; he got caught with a stupid law. It happens all the times to both blacks and whites.

Notice, no emotion in my post. Try to emulate me and you will go far.

With love

LS
How come the Jena 6 get to be thugs and the Duke 3 don’t get anything. Can’t we at least call them bloods? That’s what we called the jocks in the more aggressive sports. You know the ones that walk around campus like they’re something special and throw private parties where they degrade women/

MikeR 2:13pm
From your post, I guess you never played sports. I also guess that you were the kid at High School that was probably called "Rebel without a Brain".

Get over it. The jocks who acted special, always got their due. If they weren't good enough to go professional, they usually ended up working for some nerd who was smart as a whip.

The Jena 6 are thugs. They would have killed the boy they were kicking if they hadn't been pulled away. They should be sentenced to prison.

Gray Ghost
"The Jena 6 are thugs. They would have killed the boy they were kicking if they hadn't been pulled away. They should be sentenced to prison."

But nothing should have happened to ANY of the white kids that behaved poorly in the situation!A white kid pulls out a gun, a black kid gets hit over the head with a bottle by a white kid, and nothing is said on Townhall.com about these violent acts. I cannot believe this.

I don't see hate
With all respect, Anthony Thomas, I read Dr. Sowell's columns every chance I get, and I don't sense a hatred of his own people, as you put it.

His comment about finding the emails wondering why he was so worried about three rich white kids made me think of something an acquaintance said to me in a newsgroup several years ago. I was in the process of writing a research paper on the "Titanic" tragedy and how the "women and children first" tradition affected the burgeoning women's suffrage movement, and a (white) poster on the newsgroup said to me that she really didn't understand why it was considered such a tragedy: after all, it was just a bunch of "rich white folks" who died.

Leaving aside the terribly skewed fatality rates that favored third-class immigrant passengers, I was a bit taken aback by what might be seen as hatred of one's own people. Isn't 1,500 people dying a tragedy, no matter the race?

Unless, never until
The principle is "...UNLESS found guilty" (or in this parody, innocent.)

They only get 1 bite at the apple. They can't keep trying you until they get the result they want.

anthony dont be coward
YOU SAY DUKE WHITE GUYS WERE IMMORAL FOR HIRING A STRIPPER

WAS MLK IMMORAL FOR HIS EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

YES OR NO. DONT BE A COWARD. YOU BROUGHT UP "IMMORA"; NOT FACE THE IMPLICATIONS OF YOUR POST. DONT CHICKEN OUT

Personally, I dont think it is anyone;s business, but since you are so moreal that you had to call the Duke guys immoral for breaking NO blbilical injunction, then, MLK is fair game.

Jena 6
The white kids that hung the noose's did behave badly. They were suspended for three days. Not enough in my book, but it can not be said that did not receive any punishment. The bottle incident happened at a private party, not on school grounds. The so-called Jena 6, beat the white boy unconscious. They did not quit beating him until they were physically restrained. I understand tensions were running high with all the name calling. This still does not make six ganging up on one and litterly beating the hell out of him ok. The Bell kid did have a criminal record. I do partially blame the school because they continued to let the Bell kid play on the football team because he was there star player. Maybe he thought he could get by with anything after this. Also, the school knew that there was a lot of racial tension and did not do anything to calm things down. All of this factors into what happened, but still does not excuse the six for there actions.

Gray Ghost
Hey! You got me. I never was athletic but I wasn’t a rebel either. I was the quiet kid who read all the time. But I know what you mean. Isn’t it a shame the way those bad old liberals attack the writer instead of his argument. And the way they call names and make insults. That’s the kind of thing they do on the West Coast or in New York City, but out there in the "Middle" of the USA, them "country bumpkins" don’t stoop so low. Yes sir, a liberal will always put a tag on the one they oppose but never put a tag on the one they are supporting. Those bad liberals.

Dr. Sowell - eneuf said
Dr. Sowell another great well thought out article, Thank You.

The post submitted on this article were generally interesting until the Liberal(socialist) baiters entered this particular forum; which sent the post to the proverbial Hand basket to he**.
To many individuals on TH actually take up much space indulging the liberals anti-social pleasure's.

But that's their goal isn't it;so congratulation's Posters for making their day.

3 months makes it premeditated
"The white kids that hung the noose's did behave badly. They were suspended for three days."

They did not behave badly. They were supporting their team. The nooses, painted black and gold, were nothing more than school spirit props.

They were not suspended for three days until after they had been expelled. The expulsion was at the instigation of the black parents, not the students. The school board(?) reduced the punishment to three days' suspension rather than eliminate it all together, because, after the black parents made a problem out of it, they had to do something to avoid further problems.

"The so-called Jena 6, beat the white boy uenconscious."

They did not "beat [him] unconscious", they cold-cocked him, sucker-punched him, ambushed him, with a single blow, knocked him unconscious. Then, and only then, with their victim defenseless, pur brave, black students beat him, kicking him violently (have you seen the pix?) until another student intervened.

The white boy who went to his truck for a gun, obviously did not attempt murder--the gun was not loaded. He was attempting intimidation against people who were threatening violence against him at a convenience store. It, apparently, was the equivalent of the "whites' tree", and the black
attackers were merely protecting their turf. He had the temerity to shop at a public accommodation the blacks had appropriated to themselves.

Whether the bottle wielder should have had charges against him, I do not know enough about it to determine. Perhaps so. There is a difference, however, between a premeditated ambush and a brawl, irrespective of how despicable this is.

This is yet another example of why government should not run schools. Government is just as poor a teacher as it was a preacher. Get your children out of the government's youth concentration camps.

the kid that pulled a gun was proven to have pulled it in self defense note he never fired it. the party thing i dont know a whole lot about it but it was a fight at a party do we even know who started the fight.

and you are ok with 6 guys kicking a boy who is unconious and on the ground just becasue some white boys got off easy on smaller offenses.

What's wrong and right
The Nilfong case details for all of us what is still wrong with this country. Will such wrongs ever be corrected, probably not. In a free country such as ours, there is simply too much latitude for the bad people to, in one way or another, rise to the surface. Another thing that is wrong with this country is it's media. This is, to my mind, the greatest evil of this story. To say that the this malaise in the media is a new phenomenon is foolhardly, and one need only read the fictional depiction of Colonial America in Willam Safire's Scandalmonger as evidence of this. Having said that, I do believe the media has cascaded downward in it's depicition of modern America in the span of my life. Either that, or the evidence brought forth by columnists like Sowell, radio talk show hosts and online bloggers keeps the American media in check. Having said that, I don't think the actions of the aforementioned has caused the mainstream media to act in a manner of an entity being held under a microscope. I think the MSM is acting like an entity that is battling back against those who hold them to a higher standard.

Bais justified by limited information
"Both white and black kids behaved badly in that situation, but only the black kids were charged with anything."

Trying to find an example of a white child acting badly in the crime of 20061204, I come up empty. Which white student was culpable that day?

"I guess when the white kid ran to the truck to get his gun, it wasn't attempted murder either? He was gonna shoot deer right?"

With an empty gun? Hardly attempted murder. Intimidation, nothing more.

"What do you think would have happened had the black kids not wrestled the gun away?"

Nothing, since it wasn't loaded. Why did he retrieve his gun in the first place? Is shopping while white a crime in that location?

"A white kid also hit a black kid over the head with a bottle , no charges."

Different day, unrelated, and insufficient to justify the brutality of 1204.

As to whether there should have been charges, I do not know. Without more information, it is impossible to say.

"The bias is unbelievable."

Yes, you are. But that doesn't stop you from posting the same drivel repeatedly.

Schools are dangerous places for children.

Jena wasn't just about a single day, it was a series of events. The white kid hitting the black kid over the head with a bottle was one of the many on going events in this episode. And it was related .

"and you are ok with 6 guys kicking a boy who is unconious and on the ground just becasue some white boys got off easy on smaller offenses."

Nooo. I'm the only person on this thread to condemn both black and white parties involvled. You aparently didn't read my post.

"Whether the bottle wielder should have had charges against him, I do not know enough about it to determine"

You know all the specifics and have condemned all the black kids about everything they did poorly, but coincidently don't know about everything the white kids did poorly. Typical.

"They did not behave badly. They were supporting their team. The nooses, painted black and gold, were nothing more than school spirit props."

This is just a flat out lie.

FBI agents said it had "all the makings of a hate crime"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jena_Six

Please stop lying.

Beware
what is happening in this country. The incident in Jena a couple of days ago is really scary. Now some professor at a teacher's college is claiming that she found a noose tied to her door. The noose tied to the "white" tree in Jena has reignited racial conflict in America.

I have never understood the story. Why would students be permitted to have a white tree in 2007? The violence triggered by the noose incident has provided Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton a new opportunity. They are taking full advantage of it. I wanted to throw up when I saw Sharpton in the front of the crowd of thousands that they brought to Jena to protest.

He galanced at the camera as if to reassure himself that the world was seeing him. This entire series of events puzzles me. All of a sudden we have jackson and Sharpton doing their tird old number in front of the cameras. They are spewing the same old garbage about racism being rampant in America today.

Now we see this black woman who is identified as an activist professor suddenly finding a noose on her door. I guess this must mean that suddenly the clock has been turned back, and Jackson and Sharpton have been right all along. Racism is as rampant as it ever was in this country.

Right now, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that race hustling activists hung the nooses on the white tree in Jena. I certainly would not put it past them, and Jessie and Al are really sucking up all the TV face time they can exploiting the situation.

Beware 2
What a crock of s*^t. I don't believe or trust those hustling, race baiting scumbags. I don't trust or believe this activist professor. This whole thing is just too pat. Up until this flap the race baiters have had to complain about "institutional" racism, since they couldn't support their claims that nothing had changed in the racial situation.

They had been reduced to telling whites that whether they (the whites) knew it or not, they were racists. Brainwashed, guilt ridden whites actually belive this crap. Especially those on the political left, because it fits their hateful view of America.

re: Jena 6/G. Wilson
The big difference between what Dr. Sowell is writing about and what Tony Thomas is frothing at the mouth about is this: In the Jena 6 and G. Wilson cases THE LAW WAS FOLLOWED as it was written. Nobody in those cases was being railroaded on trumped up charges. There was no prosecutor hiding evidence that could have proven innocence.

Your posts are all non sequitors Tony my man. Your beef in the 2 cases you keep mentioning is with the law as it is written. Dr. Sowell's column is about persons who do corruption to the law. If you don't like the law as it is written than work to change the law. But I hope even you can agree that persons who corrupt the law should be brought to task. REGARDLESS OF COLOR!

The subject of the column was the major implications of the Duke Case rather than the same tired argument of how evil Nifong was and is. Instead of a rational debate on what is the best way to prevent prosecutorial abuse we have yet another diatribe on the Jena6 and other immaterial cases that have been argued already over and over.

Adult Bottle Wielder
You know all the specifics and have
condemned all the black kids about
everything they did poorly, but
coincidently don't know about
everything the white kids did
poorly.

Your Wikipedia article tells us that only long after the infamous bottle incident did Robert Bailey, Jr, claim that a white adult, not a JHS student, broke a beer bottle over his head outside, not within, the racially integrated Fair Barn party. However, there is no record of any treatment for an injury. It is difficult to see why you keep claiming that it was a white boy in the first place and why the students of JHS should be called to account for an unsubstantiated charge against an adult.

US Attorney Donald Washington had found no federal statute under which the teens could be prosecuted, just as LA District Attorney Walters had found no applicable state statute.
Washington is BLACK, this seems to be important.

So, apparently, you believe that children should be convicted, as adults, for NOT breaking the law.

Walters wanted to prosecute. The only thing that dissuaded him was that there was no crime. Silly little thing like that! But it was not the nooses that triggered the Sharpton-Jackson assault on Jena. No one outside their community would have heard of it had it not been for the good reverends. Please note the last 2 words are highly sarcastic.

A teacher reported that black students played with the nooses, put their heads through them and swung from them. Apparently a noose does not conjure images of lynchings in all black minds.
The teacher is BLACK. This seems to be important.

When a student, citing his school ties,
refuses to move with his family when
they go follow the parents' work, one
wonders where his true devotion lies,
and why.

Len I'm sure you're a good guy, but I have no idea the relevance of your question and I have no idea what you've been talking about this entire time. I'm just not on your level man, lol. God bless though.

Good night.

It's Your Double Standard
"I have no idea the relevance of your question"

The relevance of his question, "Was MLK immoral like the Duke la crosse players? And if so, who was more immoral?" seems obvious to me. You imply that the Duke players deserved their fate because they were immoral for hiring 2 strippers at a party, and for underage drinking.

One might wonder if you have a double standard, i.e., that it is one thing for a bunch of white guys to be immoral (as I believe they were), and quite another for a well known black preacher (ostensibly a moral ensample for his flock) to shack up with whores, have mistresses, and generally ignore the commandment "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

If you are justified in accounting the Duke team guilty for their immorality, you should, by any consistent standard, condemn King for his immorality. Maybe, if the La Crosse team deserved their fate, well, it's perhaps better left unsaid.

You brought up the subject of immoral behavior as reson for criticism. You were dragging in a straw man having little or no connection to the merits of the duke case. Len brought in MLK, a subject with little or no relevance. His point seems obvious to me. You are doing a civil job, and hewing mainly to points worth discussing. Don't lower your credibility with judgements based on whose ox got gored. The fact is that racism is a problem, everyone knows it, all ethnic groups are guilty of it, you are telling no one nothing they don't know. How's about some solutions, rather than taking Dr. Sowell to task for merely stating the obvious. Jena does not justify Duke, any more than Duke justifies Jena. We are not going to get anywhere bringing up old crimes, or even new ones. Or would you care to go into the statistics of black on white crime last year?

"You imply that the Duke players deserved their fate because they were immoral for hiring 2 strippers at a party, and for underage drinking.

Sir (or mam) I find you to be a dishonest poster I never said the above. In fact in the very first line of my very first post I said the following:

"Let me first say that I'm glad that all three Duke Lacrosse players were acquitted of all charges. Let me also say that the over zealous prosecutor should be held accountable for his actions."

As far as deserving "their fate” I said this about BOTH the Jena 6 and the Duke Lacrosse players:

"Let’s also remember that like the Jena 6 case, the accused parties involved were not innocent of immoral behavior. The Lacrosse students were at a drunken party where they hired a stripper for to do God knows what. And there is still a lot unknown about what actually went on."

Please stop distorting my words to make your point.

As for Len, his post are incoherent, poorly worded, and rooted in 3rd grade English. I can't understand them so I don't answer them. His comparison of the Duke Lacrosse players to MLk was an ongoing analysis he was making in his many poorly worded post.

What do you mean?
"The Lacrosse students were at a drunken party where they hired a stripper for to do God knows what."

Gee, let's see. Why would anyone hire a stripper? What did the other stripper say they did? Ah! Bingo! They "danced" and took their clothes off. The "for to do" was dance and take their clothes off. Now you know. Another impenetrable mystery solved.

"And there is still a lot unknown about what actually went on."

No, there is very little unknown about what went on in that building. It has been the subject of exhaustive investigations. The NC AG declared there was no crime, and that the players were "innocent", not "not guilty", but innocent".

What we had was a "rogue" prosecutor pandering to the willing black community that he would not let the "rape" case drop. He did it for votes to save his pension, and they in their eternal victimhood, which you seem to identify with, gave him the electoral nod.

Your 9:18 post tonight restates your implication (which you have never put into words, but clearly meant) is that the Blue (or is that "White"?) Devils were guilty of something, and, come feast or famine, they ought to be punished.

If you did not mean their "immoral behavior" was grounds for some sort of punishment, what, exactly did you mean?

That even though the Duke Lacrosse players were involved in immoral behavior, they did not deserve to have their names drug through the mud the way they were.

Did you not assert there was somethint IMMORAL about the duke guys hiring a stripper. Read your posts.

And for that reason since you are so concerned about morality which had no relevance to guilt or innocence, i was curious as to whether you were concerend about MLKs extra curricular activites; i assume you know what i mean; i am being polite.

So what is good for goose is good for the gander. You raised the issue.

Anthony...
Do you honestly think Sowell's point was about racism against whites? Not true.

In fact, Dr. Sowell rarely writes about racism per se, regardless of the color of the victim. Sometimes, frankly, as a black man, it frustrates me, not because I think he's skirting any particular issue, but because I am simply curious about his opinions on certain so-called "racial" matters.

But I've followed Sowell for many years, and even though he's been my hero for much of that time, I've only begun to fully grasp his core perspective during these latter years.

Dr. Sowell is genuinely concerned about the future of this republic, as well as Western Civilization. It might sound paranoid to those who rarely think beyond next week. But to a leading historian/economist like Thomas Sowell, it's more than an academic exercise. It's a legitimate reason for concern.

Now, if you're someone who honestly thinks that "racism" is more important than the survival of Western Civilization, you will probably never get where Sowell is coming from.

But the reality is this: Sowell makes a LOT of sense, and even when he seems off base, he's often ahead of everybody else.

I've grown to respect him even more.

One-sided Sowell
I believe the thing that Anthony Thomas finds perplexing is the lack of outrage from the Ward Connerlys and Thomas Sowells or Larry Elders of the world when the injustice is perpetrated against a black (i.e. african-american etc.)

You'll be hard-pressed to find even a single article or comment remotely suggesting a miscarraige of justice toward anyone black, although if it can happen to whites there's the possibilty it could happen to one of any race I suppose.

Let's face it, like all race-related issues, if you change the race of victim, the liberal and conservative arguments flip-flop. For race not to matter, we sure spend an enormous amount of time and energy on the subject - and I don't think you can entirely blame either side for that.
