Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?


It is not just in Iraq that the political left has an investment in failure. Domestically as well as internationally, the left has long had a vested interest in poverty and social malaise.

The old advertising slogan, "Progress is our most important product," has never applied to the left. Whether it is successful black schools in the United States or Third World countries where millions of people have been rising out of poverty in recent years, the left has shown little interest.

Progress in general seems to hold little interest for people who call themselves "progressives." What arouses them are denunciations of social failures and accusations of wrong-doing.

One wonders what they would do in heaven.

We are in no danger of producing heaven on earth but there have been some remarkable developments in some Third World countries within the past generation that have allowed many very poor people to rise to a standard of living that was never within their reach before.

The August 18th issue of the distinguished British magazine "The Economist" reveals the economic progress in Brazil, Argentina, and other Latin American nations that has given a better life to millions of their poorest citizens.

Some of the economic policies that have led to these results are discussed in "The Economist" but it is doubtful that members of the political left will stampede there to find out what those policies were.

They have shown no such interest in how tens of millions of people in China and tens of millions of people in India have risen out of poverty within the past generation.

Despite whatever the left may say, or even believe, about their concern for the poor, their actual behavior shows their interest in the poor to be greatest when the poor can be used as a focus of the left's denunciations of society.

When the poor stop being poor, they lose the attention of the left. What actions on the part of the poor, or what changes in the economy, have led to drastic reductions in poverty seldom arouse much curiosity, much less celebration.

This is not a new development in our times. Back in the 19th century, when Karl Marx presented his vision of the impoverished working class rising to attack and destroy capitalism, he was disappointed when the workers grew less revolutionary over time, as their standards of living improved.

At one point, Marx wrote to his disciples: "The working class is revolutionary or it is nothing."

Think about that. Millions of human beings mattered to him only in so far as they could serve as cannon fodder in his jihad against the existing society.

If they refused to be pawns in his ideological game, then they were "nothing."

No one on the left would say such things so plainly today, even to themselves. But their actions speak louder than words.

Blacks are to the left today what the working class were to Marx in the 19th century -- pawns in an ideological game.

Blacks who rise out of poverty are of no great interest to the left, unless the way they do so is by attacking society.

The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994 but the left has shown no more interest in why that is so than they have shown in why many millions of people have risen out of poverty in Latin America or in China and India.

Where progress can be plausibly claimed to be a result of policies favored by the left, then such claims are made.

A whole mythology has grown up that the advancement of minorities and women in America is a result of policies promoted by the left in the 1960s. Such claims are often based on nothing more substantial than ignoring the history of the progress made prior to 1960.

Retrogressions in the wake of the policies of the 1960s are studiously ignored -- the runaway crime rates, the disintegration of black families, and the ghetto riots of the 1960s that have left many black communities still barren more than 40 years later.

Whatever does not advance the left agenda is "nothing."

There are going to be liberals in heaven?

Your so right in so many ways
The discussion with them is always a game,who can they fool next,and or who can I control,or manipulate.

Such contrived griftsmanship is an art form.

The Black Movement of the 60's
and the sense of entitlement that followed, was the worst thing that could happen to Black America. The entire economic argument of organizations like the Black Liberation Army and the Black Panthers was the evils of capitalism.

The perceived need to liberate themselves from what they viewed as an exploitive system, consequently had the effect of enslavement into socialistic welfare. Enablers like Jesse Jackson (the Karl Marx of his day) and the Democratic Party have kept them wallowing in the mud ever since.

They know better
The left, at least some at the top, know their policies create more poor, not fewer. Helping people rise out of poverty is not their aim. Power is. They are selling out the country by creating devisions over the fight against terrorism because they want a nice emotional issue to get them votes. they point at the poor with any consideration of why they are poor and publically evade every fact that contradicts them.

Hillary was once said to be the smartest woman in the country. Being that smart, she either knows what the truth is and doesn't care because she wants power, or she is in denial of the facts because she is deluded. The same can be said for most leftists. Either way, they are dangerous and, if they know the facts and deliberately ignore them in the quest for power, they are evil.

The Chicanos have been taking notes!
The entitlement programs afforded to the Black Movement did not go into fruition until there was violence on the streets.

The Muslims and their cause was hardly a household subject until 9/11.

The Chicano civil rights activists are weighing their options, and violent martyrdom has a history of success, stay tuned......

Left=communism..
Starting with FDR, the left has either "used our military to defend communists" or "ensured our military would be defeated when fighting against communists".
Were FDR not a communist, he would have left the socialist fascists Hitler & Salin battle-it-out, then used our military for clean-up. Rather, he wasted lifes of hundreds of thousands of military men to defend communism.

The left is only interested in votes from the folks that they can buy off with entitlement programs, and various other hand outs. Why? Because they know that they can control them, and give them just enough to keep them in a constant state of "need."

To control the movers and shakers, they continue to steal (oh, I mean tax) hard earned money for the "greater good" thus diminishing the power of those that have made their own way.

Though underlain by a variety of reasons (some of them altruistic, though misguided) the results of the "solutions" of the far left have always lead to less personal freedom and more government controls. Loosening the economic (China) and societal/moral (caste system in India) ties has seen an explosion of personal gain as people who formerly could not provide better for their families now have an opportunity to do so.

Of course, Dr. Sowell will also have to examine how weakening and destroying the family is the next means of subordinating the individual to governmental fiat. Ditto religions: can't believe in anything more powerful than the government, or you won't believe that government is the best means by which to do things.... I can see how this could be a long series of articles.

Another Homerun From Dr. Sowell
"When the poor stop being poor, they lose the attention of the left." could be restated also to "When blacks stop being black, they lose the attention of the left." Don't you dare leave the Demoncrap plantation or you become Oreo, Uncle Tom, or whatever the latest expletive for an African-American not towing the liberal Dem socialist line is. The Dems win elections based on the triad of women, minorities, and limousine liberals. Women tend to vote for Dems because they tend to favor socialist solutions over reality. Minorities tend to vote Dem because they have been trained to do this by vote buying with handouts. The limousine liberals vote Dem because of either guilt or because they simply do not have a clue.

If a Republican candidate can strip one of the legs of this triangle they win the election. If they can’t they lose, it is as simple as that. This is why the Dems get so outraged when one of their “base” in the triangle strays to a different position. This is why also the Dems are so much in favor of bringing the illegals in. There is mounting evidence that they are losing the black vote and they must replace it.

Once again Dr. Sowell says:

Let’s discuss the progress prior to 1960. Jim Crow laws, the KKK, lynching, racial and sexual discrimination. Riding in the back of the bus, segregated schools, drinking fountains and lunch counters. Is he saying that it was better then than after the 60s?

Marriage as an institution isn't only failing in Black America but also in White America. When it happens across all races and incomes then it's not just some government policy that has caused the problem. Which policy is Dr. Sowell describing here? He isn't specific but as usual just throws out generalities because he is too lazy to substantiate his claims with facts.

Good points. This could be a series of articles. The whole "subordinating the individual" concept is not exclusive to the progressives either (although it seems more severe to me in some respects).

The example that always gets me (and these are things that Repubs support as well) are the measures the will make us "safer." The national ID card deal is particularly disturbing. I read somewhere that the feds want to (or are going to) put a GPS chip in these cards for our "safety." Just another way for the gov't to have more control.

The Democrat party has used the Blacks for Votes. They do this by keeping them poor.

The Democrat Special Interests of which the leaders seem forever beholden too, are fast becoming a Muslim terror organization along with predatory gays in effect out of a sanitarium sexually molesting our children's bodies and minds with there advocacy of legally spreading AIDS (leveling the playing field to all having AIDS) via recruiting kids to their filthy sexual lifestyle.

The Democrat party is now a terror organization and the party of death.

Great article! I do agree that poverty stricken families and minorities are of little interest to the left unless it has todo with getting votes in an election and pushing their own agenda. But, this truth goes both ways. The conservative right does the same thing. Minorities, black and hispanic are neglected within their communities. In the last eight years we all could agree that the Bush administration has played just as much a part in the neglect and lack of care thereof toward minorities and poor families. Ex. Katrina, tax cuts for the rich, No Child Left Behind(testing standards that neglect the students needs, just push them through the system), healthcare(40 million uninsured), the military canvasing the poor neighborhoods and inner city schools manipulating kids from poor families the importance of serving their country, the gov't failure to properly regulate the mortgage industry which took advantage of poor families that are now unable to pay for their high cost homes forcing them to foreclosure.

Let's be honest about this. There is blame to forecast on both sides of the isle. Dems and Reps are just as much fault. They both have neglected to solve the poverty problem and other problems affecting poorer communities. George Bush is for corporate america - where does the poor family making $35,000 a year fall under that category or concern by the Bushes?

Dr. Sowell has discussed this often in his writings. Sure in the 60s overt discrimination was outlawed and jim crow was overturned. That however is not the thing that resulted in great economic gains for blacks. The largest gain in economic status occurred in the 40s and 50s before the civil rights legislation and most importantly, before the legislation from LBJ and his great society. And finally, the civil rights legislation that ended Jim Crow was primarily from the Republicans with the Democrats fighting it.

And finally, George Bush has been almost as liberal as Hillary on social spending. That is why is ratings are so low, not only do the Dems hate him, but he has also lost his own base.

RedeyeRex; you are missing the point! Yes, there has been much advancement for blacks in many areas. However, if you read Dr Sowell's book, "Black Rednecks and White Liberals", you will understand there are areas blacks are not doing as well today as they were in say the "50's", such as education and income, especially in the northern states where racism was less.

The Liberal Power Grabbers have tied their Financial Well Being to having a steady supply of poor people for whom they are “Advocates”. I give you Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Kweisi Mfume and so forth.

The NAACP pitched a fit because a few Southern States had the Confederate Flag as a part of their state flag. They screeched and howled about how the Stars and Bars are a racist symbol. Meanwhile, the murder rate among young black men is shockingly high. Students in urban school districts perform WOEFULLY! Yet the NAACP sees The Confederate Flag as the biggest problem facing Black People in America.

If the people that Liberals claim to be advocates for ever wake up and see the light, hunting Liberals will replace baseball as The National Pastime!

Genesis of a Surge
When the White House announced Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's resignation the day after Democrats took over the Congressional majority, it was widely assumed that Bush had accepted the resignation in recognition of the new majority. In fact, Rumsfeld's resignation was dated November 6, the day BEFORE the election. That information was withheld by the White House and was finally published by the New York Times on December 3, 2006. But Rumsfeld's actual letter was withheld from the public until aggressive investigation brought it out (from Reuters) on August 15, 2007 (this present month). The details of that letter are available in an online article "Rumsfeld's Mysterious Resignation" by Robert Parry, that can be googled by all. There is also interesting material about General Gates.

Briefly: Rumsfeld suggested drawing down in Iraq since the war wasn't working as planned. The Bush administration wanted no such thing since, to use Cheney's famous line, it had other priorities, and wanted to escalate the war. Rumsfeld had to go. The MSM obediently bought the story that Bush was offering an olive branch to the Democrats by canning Rumsfeld. Escalating the war, re-christened "The Surge" (which sounds temporary) went forward. Stay tuned for Iran.

So what's your point? You don't want the NAACP to focus on the Confederate flag, and you complain about black murder rates and black school performance, but you don't say what you want the NAACP to do---except let you have your Confederate flag. Do you want the NAACP to lobby for more state money to be spent on educating black kids? Better schools? More trade schools? Smaller class sizes, higher teacher: pupil ratio? I doubt you want state money spent for schools at all, if you are a true townhaller. How about the murder rate? Do you want the NAACP to go for gun control? For legislation providing services as those future murderers are growing up so that they won't grow up to be murderers---family support, day care, after-school care, counseling? I doubt that too.

Sounds more as if you are anti-NAACP and pro-Confederate flag just so everybody in sight will know that you are a white boss. Do you also want blacks to get off the sidewalk when they see you coming?

I haven't really noticed that conservatives care much about Hispanics except as a voting block. On the contrary, I have read on townhall that Hispanics are leeches, cockroaches, scum, criminals, and baby-factories. Townhallers have told us how they recoil even hearing the Spanish language spoken or seeing it written on signs in store windows. They have called Hispanics such names as "taco-head" and "greaser". They don't distinguish between present-day illegal immigrants and Americans of Hispanic descent, for example advising columnist Linda Chavez to "go back to Mexico" when she has already explained that her Spanish ancestors were on this soil in the 17th Century (which antedates Ellis Isle by 200 years). But then when Chavez shone a light on townhall racism, she was punished on this board for months.

World history is littered with many others who shared your socialistic utopian fantasies.......history is also littered with their failed economies, failed societies and millions of their dead citizens.

Nobody seems to be interested in asking black folk WHY they avoid Republicans like the plague. (Black support for the Bush administration is in the single digits in some polls.)

That would be far more useful than a bunch of Townhallers projecting their thoughts and prejudices on to others. If Conservatices are so good for black people, and liberals are so bad for black people, why do 90% of African Americans find conservatives so distasteful?

A couple of years ago we saw Bush on TV bragging about "The Ownership Society" in which everbody would learn to think like Republicans as folks who never in the world thought they would be able to afford to buy a house were now buying houses all over the place. Unfortunately, The Ownership Society couldn't make the mortgage payments. The rest is now history as "house" turns out to mean "house of cards" and our financial markets reflect the folly of Bush's intention.

I am not going there with you. This economy is not a house of cards. Seems we have touched on this before. All the stock market losses have been recouped pretty much. But the media will tell you it fell 300 pts and leave out that it only lost 15 points at the end of the day. again, personal responsibility. Mortgage buying involves formula ratios of income to debt otherwise, how can they assess the risk? Buy too much house, keep gaining debt and at some point, lose. Was the bank too loose, probably. But to blame Bush for that, too? c'mon. If he had not said that, you'd be allover him for stifling the little man. He can't do anything to please you people.

I just love how you can take a comment and twist it to fit your demented little mind. I don't think Georgetwin was lamenting not being able to have a confederate flag. I believe his point is that organizations such as NAACP place way too much emphasis on petty little things like that and not enough emphasis on actually helping minorities move from welfare to self-sufficiency. Of course, if they are self-sufficient and educated, they won't need the liberals telling them how bad they have it and how the nanny government can cure all their ills.

Give me the children
Was it Marx that said give me the children at age of 5 and Ill change the world? Well we give them our children at the age of five. By the time they graduate (if they do) They can put a condom on a bananna blindfolded. Have been brainwashed for 13 years about how they the down trodden must rise up. I spent years with my kids trying to counter this crap and get them to think for themselves. We all need to read Atlas Shrugged again. The parasites have infested a generation with nonsense and its all coming home to roost. Its horrible what the loonies have done to a once great county in 50 years.

Caring versus non-caring
To me it seems the left equates caring with handouts. They deem the right uncaring because the right doesn't espouse government social programs and handouts as the best way to "help" those that need help. I am sure you have all heard the old addage "Give a man a fish and he eats for day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life", or some approximation there of.

If a man has fallen I will help him up, but if he has fallen because he is drunk, I will not provide a means to allow him to continue to drink. In other words, i have no problem helping someone who is the victim of some unfortunate circumstance, but I will not enable a bad behavior that leads to a bad circumstance.

I agree with Mr. Sowell that many of the organizations and government entities that are supposed to help the poor would have no further reason to exist once the problem is resolved; therefore, the problem never goes away and the programs that are enacted aren't intended to resolve the problem, only look like they are working to solve it.

Putting the government in charge of everything, wealth distribution and removal of individual responsibility are all hallmarks of socialism or communism. These "isms" have all failed where they have been tried. I do not understand the left's insistence that it will work here in the U.S.

The Hispanics are the "scapegoats" for not attacking America's real enemy --MUSLIMS-- caught in the murderous cult of Islam.

The Muslims have infiltrated our Government and are strongly behind the exporting of illegal Hispanic immigrants.

At the risk of being obvious I will point out a few things. The NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Their title suggests that the organization's purpose is to advance the lives of "colored people". Alas, their Mission Statement is the following: The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. Their Site goes on to give other statements of a similar venue to support that mission statement.

The basic problem is that like the title of the organization, their Mission Statement and it's supporting rhetoric are outdated. Everything in their mission has long been achieved with the exception of getting rid of racial hatred and discrimination to the 100% range. Racial discrimination in public affairs has been virtually eliminated, it is only a few private instances where it still lingers. Racial hatred by people who have a predilection for hatred will NEVER be eliminated and their types do not confine themselves to blacks. From this you can see that of their mission everything has been achieved that is achievable. The Confederate Battle flag flying on the SC Statehouse grounds really has nothing to do with discrimination or racial hatred and removing that flag will do absolutely NOTHING to advance the lives of "colored people".

In today's environment most of the African-Americans who have left the inner city are doing quite well. Those who are left in the inner city (and some also in the suburbs) are mired in a lifetime of drugs, crime, illegitimacy, and school dropouts. You Lilly clamor for even more money for schools and poverty programs after four decades of such programs and their demonstrated failure. Trillions of dollars have been thrown into this "War on Poverty" and no progress has been made.

If the NACP truly wished to attempt to eliminate problems for African-Americans they would be advancing programs that urged black children to stay off of the streets and in the schools. Programs that would urge black girls to remain celibate, or at least not pregnant, and to finish school. That has been shown to be the single most successful thing in preventing poverty of ALL races. Finish school and do NOT become a parent until you are out of school and have a job.

This is what the NAACP should be doing.

I think what the good Doctor is trying to say is that communism/socialism has failed in every society that it's been tried. America, in many ways, is the most advanced civilization on the planet. We got that way via our constitution, hard work and equal opportunity for all...not by rewarding laziness with the hard work of achievers.

Of course Democrats are better for the poor...it's called entitlements/vote buying. You may have noticed that the poor are still poor after 200 plus years of history. The poor didn't get poorer during 8 years of Republican control and they didn't get any richer during 100 years of Democrat control. The poor is desparate to believe anything the Democrats tell them. It doesn't matter if they deliver or not. Thus, Dr. Sowell's comment related to investment in failure.

Isn't this why communism fell? All workers got paid the same amount whether or not they worked harder than the next guy on the same assembly line. No reward for better work, so why work harder. Just like the NEA, and teachers get the same pay because they have been a teacher for the same number of years. They all get the same pay raise every year even if some of them are not fit to teach. No wonder ACT scores have remained flat even though we now spend three times as much per child (yes adjusted for inflation)than we did 30 years ago.

The reason most Europeans are satified with their healthcare is because they have never known anything better (and its illegal to leave the system). The high income taxes they pay for it come at a price: they have double to triple our unemployment rate.

Most people will gladly help someone out in need however, these same people are usually concerned about their own families welfare as well as their own. So, we work for a profit to improve our own lives as well as others. Most people do not want to stagnate which is what socialism is, stagnation. Everyone is the same no one should have what others cannot, even if everyones standard of life must be lowered. No profit = good for society in socialism. It also = societal stagnation. By ride, I assume you mean an ambulance ride. The ambulance has become a rolling trauma room. They cost over a million dollars to purchase and equip. The "drivers" are trained paramedics and they don't work for minimum wage. Couple that with the cost of their malpractice insurance premiums thanks to the parade of lawyers following them everywhere.

As for the aspirin cost, built into that is the cost of the trained pharmacist that fills the Rx. (legally required by government regulation BTW), the cost of documenttation in the logs and charts, the cost of the transportation aide that delivers the drugs to the floor, the cost of the RN who has to administer the aspirin to the correct patient, and all of their malpractice insurance premiums, as well as the double and triple checking to make sure no one makes a mistake. Also built into the aspirin fee is the cost of treating all the illegal immigrants in the ER that have no insurance, no legal means of support, no real address and no hope of ever collecting.

You want to create a slave make him depended on you for his needs. Such as health care, monetary handouts or housing. You now have em by the short hairs. The nature of liberal slavery.

Liberals' Failures -National Tragedies
Every single liberal-Left government policy, regardless of what country it was implemented in and the problem it was supposed to solve has lead to total failure. No exceptions.

In theory, these beliefs are noble. They truly are compassionate ideals. To want to use the power of government to make life better for all is indeed at the core of the liberal belief system.

In practice however, it is a giant corrupt mess. It violates what the founding fathers intended for our country. Government intervention turns to interference of peoples' lives.

Why? Because government is run by human beings, and human beings are at their core, self-serving. A career politician's only instinct is for survival. Re-election. Another rung on the ladder of politics.

Given the power to control peoples' lives, governemnt will do the wrong thing. Always.

So while the left continues it's assault on the constitution with their good intentions, they pave the road to hell...

If its making a profit, tax it. IF it STILL is making a profit, regulate it. When it stops making a profit, subsidize it.

It is the same with their intrusion on our lives. The late Milton Friedman correctly observed that whatever you tax you get less off. (E.g. tax on productivity), and whatever you subsidize you get more of (reward impoverished blacks for bad behaviour like paychecks for single moms based on how many children they have out of wedlock).

Personally, I want to pay more income tax. In fact, I wish I could pay as much in income tax a BIll Gates does, and for the same reason: I want to earn more money. Its the incentive to get up every day and work hard. If I knew that the government was going to reward me for this by taking more out in taxes as I made more money (a progressive tax rate) as some point I begin to take a paycut because its not how much money I make, its how much of that money the government is going to allow me, out of the generocity of their liberal hearts, I get to keep.

That's what I had to do. My parents worked hard to provide for me and my brother, but they couldn't afford to send us to college. I had to take a year to work 2 jobs, one in a warehouse, the other on a construction site.

I saved almost every penny and put it towards college. Once there I kept the warehouse job and paid for everything myself.

Didn't get a lot of sleep, didn't have much of a social life, but that's not what school's about, is it? I got my education, got my degree, and got a job.

So my advise to kids that can't afford college is to set your mind to do anything and everything necessary. Life is hard, work is hard, but if you've got enough character you'll be just fine.

Local Study
I live in Indiana. About 18 months ago, our local paper, The Indianapolis Star, ran a week long series on high school drop-outs. They interviewed a lot of former drop-outs, and it was heartening to hear so many unemployed people, many living off friends and government handouts, who were willing to be totally candid and admit that their failures were their own fault. I especially remember one black man in his mid twenties. He was making an effort to get his GED. He said that when he was in school, many days he just didn't want to get out of bed and go to school. Eventually, he just quit going altogether. If only the liberals had read this article, maybe they would understand. The bottom line, at least in this country, is that most people in poverty today are there because they didn't want to get out of bed. In other countries, I can accept the idea of no fault poverty, but not in this country. When immigrants can come to this country not even able to speak our language and in a few years they own their own businesses or have risen to middle class status, they debunk the idea that anyone living in the United States needs to be poor.

You have the typical socialist/communist outlook on life. Government must be responsible for assuring everyone is taken care of from the cradle to the grave. True there are some things that the government does will. However, the truth is that most things, government is abysmally poor at doing.

The Declaration of Independence does a good job of reflecting what the founders thought was the purpose of government and it is thus:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...

Thus government are created to secure life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness. Those things that government can do to those ends are what they felt like needed to be done by the Government. Thus, a military is needed to protect the nations citizens from loss of liberty due to invading armies. Nowhere in the Declaration, nor the Constitution do the founders say that the purpose of government, nor the powers of government, exist to take from one group of citizens and give to another group of citizens (or as we do now even non-citizens). Indeed, in order to achieve what you are looking for, the a loss of freedom must occur for the people who are contributing to fund these programs. And what is truly sad about these programs is that not only do they not accomplish their goals, but they have a negative impact on the people they are intended to help. This has been shown over and over again each time these programs are studied.

I would argue as well that government grants, loans, etc have devalued college education.
A Masters degree today is worth what a Bachelors was yesterday.

By making a college education easier, government intervention has actually made it less valuable. It has also resulted in the creation of bogus degrees and classes such as Feminist Studies, "A Critical Analysis of Harry Potter", and Elementary Education.

By choice, I majored in Engineering, which has not been as hard hit by the infusion of insane PC courses. If you really want your children to succeed, you should encourage them to seek a degree in something with potential. The warehouse job was unloading trailers and stacking boxes until I got trained to drive a forklift. That enabled me to get a good raise but I still put in a lot of overtime.

And sorry, "flipping burgers" will get you enough money if you're willing to work the hours. See it's all about attitude at this point. You're saying "It's not enough money, so why even try?"

Also, who says you have to go to Harvard? Flipping burgers will pay for community college. From there you have to apply yourself. Find that warehouse job, they're out there, just a little effort or even a lot of effort is required.

I was able to get a degree after much sacrifice. I now have a nice house in a good neighborhood. I have a wife and 2 beautiful kids. We go on vacations and want for not much (except for an Eagles superbowl!).

If one thing dosent work you try another and never give up. I have friends that took 12 years of night to get their degree. The ones that workked hardest for it are the most successful today. Government is a great equalizer. It pulls everyone down to the lowest common denominator. Everytime it does something its taking something else away. Liberty means freedom of action.

I also worked my way through college. I was nearly 30 before I started full time.

I went through the military. I learned to be an electrician. Then I continued my education by going through the IBEW apprenticeship program. While there I took a few night classes to get those inane requirements out of the way before making the leap to full time. By that time I was married.

My wife worked very hard, and I also worked full time most of the time I was in college. We also bought a house and had 2 beautiful daughters before I graduated.

It can be done. People do it every single day.

By the way, my brothers are both liberals. When they start going on about "Lucky, Rich Republicans" I ask them "What did I have that they didn't?" Was I given more? No. Am I smarter? As much as I like to tell them otherwise, the answer is honestly No. Did I come from a rich family? Not any more then they did. Am I better looking? Well, maybe so. That's what's wrong. Everyone is ENTITLED. Entitled is the same thing as "rights". In actuality, nobody is entitled to any education. Nothing in the federal constitution states that it is the "right" of anyone to an education. IN fact, when the Constitution was written there were very few schools and even fewer that were "free" public schools. Schooling at that time was provided by parents or by tutors that were hired by the parents. Some wealthy parents sent their children overseas for schooling. There was no concept of "free" public education. Public education for all did not actualy come about in most States until the late 1800s and in some cases the 1900s.

Went after I retired from service in 1987. I was told, because in the 1950's, if you came from a one parent home, you would not make it. I just never listened, and totally rejected superficial problems as a test to overcome and move forward in life.

Anthony - May I ask where, in what founding document, did you get the idea that everyone is "entitled" to ANYTHING, let alone college? You have the following inalienable rights: Life, Liberty and the PERSUIT (Note: not the ATTAINMENT) of happiness.

It is interesting that as a college student I attended university in Philadelphia (yes, I am also a local boy). We had a small number of both females and minorities in an otherwise pale, male and very technical, difficult, stressful and demanding program. (The success rate of this program over four years is approximately 15%). When a new, female dean decided to REDUCE the level of severity of the program, with THE STATED INTENT of bringiing in a more diverse population, guess who were the MOST angry? If you guessed the females and minority members who were pulling the work load along with the rest of us, you get a cookie!

Merit, in many cases (I did not say all) was the prime evaluator. To this day, I believe that is how it should be.

Like the man shoulda said: You make character the old fashioned way - you EARN it.

The recent report on this year's ACT scores shows that only 21% of students taking the exam scored well enough in core subjects (math, science, reading ) to achieve even a C average in their freshman year of coursework.

If everyone is entitled to a college education, how do you justify paying for the 80% who will not be able to pass their classes?

College is not for everyone. Academic prowess is a skill not everyone is born with, or has had sufficiently nurtured in their earliest years. Thus it is a waste of taxpayer money to attempt to educate someone in college who will fail no matter how hard they try. If the tuition is free, they have even less incentive to try as "it's not my money".

Our government run K-12 system is partly to blame because they have consistently graduated everyone, and doled out saving grades to undeserving youth so that they won't feel bad. Thus they graduate from high-school with a 5th grade reading level and third grade math skills but feel good about it!

Just as not everyone can slam-dunk a basketball taking off from the foul line, not everyone can solve partial differential equations, or run an atomic absorption spectometer. or properly prepare specimens for diffusion electron microscopy or design an aircraft wing. We are all born with different talents, and some of us are not gifted enough to succeed in college, even if those stupid degree courses like art history, or womyn's studies. (that's not a typo to feminists BTW)

"If vouchers are provided for low income students, who will pay for them?" That money is already structured into property tax and local income tax payments that those who work pay. The practice of presidents, prior to FDR, was to routinely veto these kinds of expenditures because they were not demonstrably in keeping with what is necessary for the national common good.

As to the military being heavily funded, funding for primary and secondary education both exceed spending on the military. 437 billion for F.Y. '08, that constitutes about 16% if annual expenditure. For primary and secondary education, public expenditures are the following (F.Y. '05); Primary education (K-12) $536 billion, and secondary education $373 billion. So perhaps you should be asking; where is all the money for education (now in excess of $1.0 trillion dollars and climbing) going? It sure isn't making it to the students.

Why Should the Government Pay for K-12?
Many on this thread believe that a taxpayer funded education is not a right guaranteed by the Constitution, and I agree. I do believe, however, that an educated populace is necessary for the good of society, or as it is stated in our Constitution, for the general welfare (God I hate using the word "welfare" because it's meaning in that context is not what the common usage is today).

However, I do not see why our government continues to force us to pay for classes and subjects that do not produce better citizens. If the current government school system is unable to achieve even rudimentary education of the populace, then release their stanglehold on K-12 and give the citizens vouchers so they can choose a school or school system that does work.

If you wish, discount the vouchers to discourage their abuse. For example, for those who choose to leave a particular government school, which spends $6,000/year of tax dollars per child, make the vouchers worth only 75% or $4500. That way, every child that leaves saves the government schools $1500 that it can divert to those who remain. It's a real win win! Especially in the inner city where government schools are particularly cash strapped. Then we can see if the liberal mantra that more money will solve the education dilema is true or not.

After 10 years, re-evaluate the situation. If it doesn't work, abandon vouchers. If it does work, abandon public schools.

Personally I think it would have been cheaper, in the long run, to pay reparations for slavery rather than continue affirmative action programs. $100,000 for every black that can trace both of their ancestors to slaves owned by an American citizen. (sorry but any recent Jamaican or Ethiopian immigrants need not apply). It should be pro-rated for mixed races (Sorry Tiger woods, you would only get $25,000). But in order to receive that check, they waive any right to themselves or any of their decendents, to affirmative action money. Would anyone sign up? I would even raise that to 1 million dollars per ancenstor of black slaves, provided that they renounce their citizenship and go to any other country on this planet that would have them and their million dollars.

For what it's worth, I'm black, and 15-20 years ago, I was as leftist as anyone around.

It's unfortunate, but I believe the following to be true. Many African-Americans, especially politically minded African-Americans, associate "left" with "fairness". Similarly, many African-Americans also equate "conservative" with "white racist".

There's an historical reason for this, of course. Back in the 50s, the "conservatives" of the Old South were obviously not friends to blacks.

Things have changed, obviously.

But in the real world (to coin a phrasefor Dr. Sowell), the instant overhauling of old habits isn't a simple process.

That's why I use the phrase "bad habit". As a child, I used to like every fried food known to man. But over time, I, as well as society, came to understand that this isn't the best formula for someone who wants to live a long life.

After many years of strenuous discipline, I've cut down my intake of fried foods about 90%. But I'll still sneak in that 10%, even though I know it's probably not a good idea, even though I've seen family members pass away prematurely as a result of fried food based diets.

Sometimes, it's just hard to change, especially when no one around you is encouraging you to do so.

The truth is, blacks are not much better off today than they were 400 years ago. They are mired in poverty, kept from the voting booth by police dogs (Florida, 2004), forced to attend the worst schools where rich whites know no learning occurs, accued of false crimes no matter what their status (O.J., 1995), and ridiculed when they seek the "White" House (Obama, now).

Thus, the fight must go on. What miniscule gains that have been made are solely the result of leftist actions. Blacks cannot rise up and achieve on their own, so it is up to Democrats to give them assistance. Only an avowed racist would expect blacks to make it on their own without handouts and affirmative action. Setting the bar so low that even blacks can jump over it is indeed an investment in our country. Thank goodness those who are on the left realize this.

I did not live in the south in the 50s, so I'm not sure whether the white population were conservative or liberal however; the majority of white southerners were bigoted at the time. The 60s brought about the Equal Opportunity Programs which were designed to correct this problem. Unfortunately as with most Government projects, the programs did not accomplish their intended purpose. What it accomplished instead is a population if people indentured into the concept of " Only the Government can Solve our Problems". This population includes all ethnicities, professions & economic levels. It's unfortunate to have this happen to the greatest Nation on Earth; We have lost the CAN DO Attitude that has made us what we are.

I have only a high school education. In high school, I didn't do too badly because most of the school work was fairly easy, however I didn't apply myself and didn't think about the future. After high school, I was fired from my very first job. It was then I finally realized i had better take my future seriously. I got another job busing tables for minimum wage ($3.33 an hour). After a year of that, an opportunity came along to get on at the local TV station (for minimum wage also). I worked my way from tape operator to director. It took alot of patience and hours to get there. Eventually, I moved to a bigger city for more money and starting at the bottom. After several years, I worked my way to supervisor. For the past 25 years now, I've worked in this industry. along the way, I bought 9 rental properties and a (small) motel. Working a full time job, running these businesses, marriage and having 2 kids has required much time and sacrifice. It does anger me that my money that I work so hard for goes to people who in some cases, all they have to do is get pregnant or enter this country illegally. My point is, if I can do it, anyone can, you included. Your life is not set and you never know what the future holds.

That is why they have so much respect among Americans of African heritage. Knee-jerk rhetoric intellectually lazy
I found Mr. Sowell's column in my local paper today and stumbled upon this site. It's great to see so much discussion around such vital topics.

However, I am disturbed by the knee-jerk partisan rhetoric. Mr. Sowell is (presumably) an intellectual, yet his arguments cite no evidence to support his assertions (don't we all learn in high school that if you're going to make an assertion, provide evidence to support it?).

Despite the sophomoric mistake, what I am most disturbed by is the relentless intellectual laziness that has become our common political debate. "The liberals are wrong and out to get X." "The conservatives are wrong and out to get Y." It's absurd, as polling has indicated over and over that most Americans fall in the center of the spectrum, not at these "conservative" and "liberal" poles.

This kind of knee-jerk partisan rhetoric never results in meaningful, intelligent discussion about genuine issues. It just becomes a pissing contest where sound bites rule. I can accept when folks like Ann Coulter and Michael Moore play into it. They make their livings by shocking the public with absurd antics. But when we have a Stanford Fellow spouting the same nonsense, it's embarrassing.

I long for an America filled with people who are exemplary of the intelligence and decorum that we most assuredly possess. This sort of banter is a disgrace to this great nation. We can do better and at some point must ask more of ourselves than pandering to childish antics, ridiculous sound bites and irrational rage. Finger pointing is not intelligent debate. It's just disgraceful.

How long have you been reading Dr. Sowell? He was after all writing an opinion piece, albeit an informed and thoughtful one as always. You have to understand Dr. S not only from his point of view, but in context of his body of popular writing on this issue. A fair amount of that context can be gained from Townhall, in the archive of his previous columns. Some of the points to which he refers in the present article are expounded more fully in previous articles and even more so in his mass-market books.

He does, after all, cite _The Economist_, recent statistics he's quoted before (Census Bureau?), & (gack!) Marx.

I read your post & frankly fail to find any particular argument with the _substance_ of this column or even the previous reply posts. You freely toss word & phrases like "sophomoric," knee-jerk," "intellectually lazy," "pissing contest," "spouting...nonsense," "disgrace," "childish antics," "ridiculous," "childish rage," & "disgraceful." However you have not made it clear how any of the foregoing earns such epithets. Where does name-calling fit into the standard you espouse?

Since you are not familiar with Dr. Sowell, let us introduce you to one of the most brilliant economists ever who has an awesome ability to cut through the technical mumbo jumbo intellectuals use and present economics as common sense. He has written some of the best books ever. I would like to encourage you to go to your local library and check out Basic Economics and Applied Economics. I think after reading them you will reconsider what you wrote. Speaking of evidence, can anyone provide a great moderate? Nope. Most great leaders of history actually stood for something, not for all holding hands and saying, "Can't we all just get along?"

Caring for the poor
Perhaps I missed it, but in regards to who cares most about the poor, I didn’t see mentioned that several studies show that conservatives donate more money to charity than do (leftwing) liberals. It would appear their generosity is mostly limited to someone else’s pocketbook. When Al Gore ran against George Bush in 2000, both men released their income tax statements. It turned out that Mean George had given considerably more than Green Gore. In fact, my brother (a conservative and religious postal worker) gave conspicuosly more to charity than the rich Mr. Gore. There is an old saying: Put your money where your mouth is.

Rob, its more than that. Evil George paid more in taxes and caring abou the poor Gore was able to invest in tax shelters. What's even more trashy (yes trashy) was those who voted and voiced their oppositions to the evil George's tax cuts did NOT send their tax savings back to Washington...Talk about not putting their money where their mouths were. And remember the all-knowing, able to see every nuance John Kerry? Almost all of his income is hidden behind tax shelters...that's right...

and Ted Kennedy? Did you know he owns oil mineral rights? Exactly, he actually invests in Big Oil... Michael Moore even owned shares in the most evil company in the world...Haliburton (oh, just typing that gave me cold chills).

Libs are what they are. When asked about these issues, they redirect the question back and make it look like the people asking those questions are the ones with the problem since they don't ask questions about the real issues.

Libs are the real issue. They get in the way of poor people wanting to prosper. Hillary Clinton says in her latest commercial paraphrased: "If you are a single mom, soldier, or whatever, then you are not in George Bush's thoughts." You know what? I hope I am never in Big Government's thoughts or in the crosshairs of so-called compassion. The more Big Government stays out of my life, the more I will prosper and teach my kids how to prosper.

The Left's Agenda is ALWAYS personal.
Karl Marx expressed a primal anger at his father's refusal to finance Karl's love affairs by denouncing the rich (Karl's father) and by making his wrath an "intellectual exercise " by writing the Das Capital & the Commie Manifesto. Hundreds of millions of human being died just because Karl hated his ol' man! (a Jewish Sayyid Qutb?)

Likewise Hillary Clinton. She presents the same subsurface anguish in her personality that suggest strongly of emotional pathology.

Great piece by Sowell, per usual. Though he did not go far enough. It seems there are no limits when they can use the demographic (that applies to any) for a polical purpose. But their are no limits to backing marxists etc because there is no line. Thus, politics (left's agenda) rules. How true if they can use it, fine, if they cannot its nothing.

Poverty rose 32% with ol' W in office. He also saw good jobs, where people could rasie a family, sent off to Mexico where they are lucky to get $2./hr. Don't drink the republican Kool aid , educate yourself.

More jobs are insourced than outsourced (e.g. Toyota). Where do you get that ridiculous statistic that poverty rose? Can you name a welfare program that buys people out of poverty? Its just enough to keep these dependents on welfare who keep voting for the same people who keep them their. Their hero, Bill Clinton, said it best, "insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result".

Certainly Dr Sowell is on the money about the Left and their culture of dependency, but it's not through unfettered free market capitalism that Brazil, China, India etc have grown, and nor in a previous generation Japan, Germany and S Korea. All these success stories employed iron strong protectionism, and in most cases still do. The US is one of the most protected and regulated economies - look at the subsidies given to agriculture! The 3rd world will never get out of its mire if it can't sell its main products (agriculture) competitively in the 1st world.

Liberals care about the poor like Col. Sanders cares about chickens. They are nothing more than bought and paid for, modern day slaves. And yes, they ARE that dumb and lazy - else wise they would be getting a job, losing the substance abuse thing and getting OUT of poverty. Call me all the names ya like - been there, done that.

Comments like this are why African-Americans dislike conservatives. Someone explain to me why anyone would want to link up with people who think they are dumb and lazy and are waiting for them to fail so they can say they were right? I am not interested in "proving" my worth to anyone so working with you to prove I am not lazy and dumb is out of the question. I am an African-American and I do believe that many times (ok, most times) the NAACP and democratic organizations are out of order. However, I'd rather deal with them then join with others who disparage the very people they claim their way helps. Not everything that the government has given was squandered and wasted and not appreciated by the recipient. I weighed the economic outcomes of my actions and maximized everything I had access to. To say that because of someone's family wealth and social circumstances in EVERY situation should disqualify them from reaching higher than their economic realities will allow presently (one can only make so much not having a degree! It's not sufficient for school and living) is tantamount to placing people in an economic caste system.

I am not for money being tossed freely at the poor or blacks. In some circumstances though, it helps. Everyone who accesses welfare, federal loans or whatever gov't program isn't a liberal, stupid, lazy, etc. For many people, the "benevolence" of the conservatives never reached them. I can see both sides of the fence having pulled myself up by my bootstraps the gov’t helped me get into a position I could never have reached had I paid for it all myself!

P.S. Many of my friends who were so against student loans and worked didn't have the extracurricular experience to be considered for well-paying jobs! Go figure!
