When my research assistant and her husband took my wife and me to dinner at a Chinese restaurant, I was impressed when I heard her for the first time speak Chinese as she ordered food. My assistant was born and raised in China, so I should have been impressed that she spoke English. But I took that for granted because she always spoke English to me.

We all have a tendency to take for granted what we are used to, and to regard it as somehow natural or automatic -- and to be unduly impressed by what is unusual. Too many Americans take the United States for granted and are too easily impressed by what people in other countries say and do.

That is especially true of the intelligentsia, and dangerously true of those Supreme Court justices who cite foreign laws when making decisions about American law.

There is nothing automatic about the way of life achieved in this country. It is very unusual among the nations of the world today and rarer than four-leaf clovers in the long view of history.

It didn't just happen. People made it happen -- and they and those who came after them paid a price in blood and treasure to create and preserve this nation that we now take for granted. More important, this country's survival is not automatic. What we do will determine that. Too many Americans today are not only unconcerned about what it will take to preserve this country but are busy dismantling the things that make it America.

Our national motto, "E Pluribus Unum" -- from many, one -- has been turned upside down as educators, activists and politicians strive to fragment the American population into separate racial, social, linguistic and ideological blocs. Some are gung ho for generic "change" -- without the slightest concern that the change might be for the worse, even in a world where most nations that are different are also worse off. Most are worse economically and many are much worse off in terms of despotism, corruption, and bloodshed.

History is full of nations and even whole civilizations that have fallen from the heights to destitution and disintegration. The Roman Empire is a classic example, but the great ancient Chinese dynasties, the Ottoman Empire and many others have met the same fate. These were not just political "changes." They were historic catastrophes from which whole peoples did not recover for centuries. It has been estimated that it was a thousand years before Europeans again achieved as high a standard of living as they had in Roman times. The Dark Ages were called dark for a reason.

Today, whole classes of people get their jollies and puff themselves up by denigrating and denouncing American society. Such people are a major influence in our media, in our educational system and among all sorts of vocal activists. Nothing illustrates their power to distort reality like the way they seize upon slavery to denounce American society.

Slavery was cancerous but does anybody regard cancer in the United States as an evil peculiar to American society? It is a worldwide affliction and so was slavery. Both the enslavers and the enslaved have included people on every inhabited continent -- people of every race, color, and creed. More Europeans were enslaved and taken to North Africa by Barbary Coast pirates alone than there were African slaves taken to the United States and to the colonies from which it was formed.

Yet throughout our educational system, our media, and in politics, slavery is incessantly presented as if it were something peculiar to black and white Americans. What was peculiar about the United States was that it was the first country in which slavery was under attack from the moment the country was created.

What was peculiar about Western civilization was that it was the first civilization to destroy slavery, not only within its own countries but in other countries around the world as well.

Reality has been stood on its head so that a relative handful of people can feel puffed up or gain notoriety and power. Whatever they gain, the rest of us have everything to lose.

Thank you for your clarity Dr. Sowell. If we don't fight for it, we won't keep it. If we don't learn who we are, we won't know what we are fighting for. It's time to teach American Exceptionalism again instead of the proctologist's view of American history currently in vogue.

Unfortunatly, it has become the "in" thing to look for the bad in this great country instead of looking at the good. Too many would rather cry and complain about how bad they have it than pick themselves up by the bootstraps and work for a better way of life. Second and third generation welfare families looking for a hand out rather than a hand up. It's easier to steal from the hard working than be the hard working. If they get caught, then it's complain about the unfair courts and how they were downtrodden as kids. What a bunch of crap. There are more opportunities in this country than any country in the world. I fought for this country and would GLADLY do it again as I know we have to buy our freedoms with blood, sweat and tears. I for one will NEVER take this country for granted and will love her till my dying day.

You cite "welfare families looking for a nandout". There's no legitimate excuse for this theft of money earned by working Americans. The federal and state governments assume the role of "middlemen" in taking from some to give to others.

Socialism, Marxism, Communism? Call it what you will, but we know the United States of America was not conceived by such destructive philosophies. Hillary Clinton knows better! Read all about her.

Welfare is only one of the many problems we are looking at today.

The sad and ridiculous divorce rate, kids being shfted from one household to another, homosexuals demanding the "right to marry", to adopt children, and schools (the NEA?) brainwashing students to accept the two moms or two dads home life as equal to a home with a father and a mother.

Include all of the above in what is bringing this country down. And remember that working Americans also pay a big tab for the needs of many illegals who've been given access to enter our country without our permission.

Taking America for granted
I am a 30 year Navy veteran. I believe that qualifies me to state that I love my Country.
It is sadly true, however, that I am afraid of my government.

It's not that they don't get it!
Dittos: Far too many people want to appear progressive or enlitened yet have no sense of what those words mean. This nation is sliding into an abyss from which it may never recover. Just look at the attention given to Paris Hilton and the big party thrown for the late Princess Diana. It is all about show with little substance. Read Michelle Malkin's article on immigration then read the comments from the libs. How on earth anyone can defend the open borders policy is beyond me yet they do. I hate to say it but ours may be the last generation to live in a free America.

The Constitution
The Constitution is a contract that was agreed to by the people to bring into being the institutions that were to secure for us the benefits of liberty. The courts have decided that the contract should be amended and did so without asking us to go along. The institutions created to keep us free now work to enslave us.

The vast majority of what is now undertaken by government is not allowed under the Constitution. I say that any who advocate continuance or expansion of those activities should be labeled an'Enemy of the Constitution' and should be treated as such.

If you think that taking what I have and giving to another is a good idea, or that what I say should be controlled, or that I don't have the right to arm and defend myself, then you are an enemy of freedom and should be dealt with just as the Redcoats were at Concord Green.

Dr. Sowell started this article discussing the courts using foreign law as precedence and the evils thereof. When this is done in anything other than English common law for a situation not covered by existing statue it is the most blatant of political maneuvering. When it is done by the Supreme Court it should be noted by the public that we are about to lose even more freedom.

All of the rest of the evils described by Dr. Sowell in this article are true, but do not represent the true problem with the described evil. Yes, the left wing nut-roots crowd show a remarkable distain and hatred for all things American. Although I detest their way of thinking, the real issue isn’t that they think the way they do. The real issue is that they and their like are able to influence members of congress and get laws passed that reflect their hatred for American capitalist life. That is issue number one. Issue number two is that we haven’t had a Supreme Court that actually reads the constitution in over a hundred years. When the court acts as a political organ instead of a court they seek all kinds of extraneous excuses for their ridiculous interpretation. They use penumbras, foreign law, and even stare decisis and the slippery slope theory. (That is what resulted in Kelo). When justices use foreign law as a precedence for interpreting the US Constitution it should be grounds for impeachment and removal.

Until we have a real Supreme Court we will continue to lose freedom with each and every ruling. I think that the court has moved a little in the past few years, but it needs to move a lot more.

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the PEOPLE". Perhaps the most abused part of our great Constitution. I see nothing in it that grants these powers to activist judges or liberal legislators.

God Bless America on this Fourth of July and all the vets that have contributed to preserving this great country. I am not ready to give it to the socialist without a fight, and I'm betting the vast majority of Americans are prepared to do the same!

...simply stated, the greatest Republic the world has ever seen. Our strength has always been in the free-flowing concert of diversity and the clarion chorus national pride. We have tipped the scales decidely askew and, as a result, the concert has become increasingly discordant. We are seeing diversity trump nationalism and the end result is a progressive decline in national pride and, sadly, our honor.

There are many to share the blame. Unfortunately, the shrill voices of "viva le diference" have shouted down the chorus of the "melting pot" of national unity. The "ulmeltable ethnics" have triumphed and our sense of "pride in nation" has suffered deep wounds.

To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson's inaugeral address: "We are all immigrants; we are all Americans." If we do not sense the latter assertion of that phrase, we have a tough row to hoe, now and in the foreseeable future.

American prosperity is the only
reason there are movie stars, academicians, artists, many bureaucrats, etc... who can earn handsome livings doing things that aren't done in other countries. The aforementioned are the same ones who do not understand that they are ants at the picnic and have no idea how to prepare, provide, and perpetuate a picnic themselves.

Oh stop it! I still knew Italians that were here 6o yrs and couldn't speak english. We never were a melting pot we were and are a stew. Where I live now they have "Irish Americans" whose ancestors came here in the 1640's. That is "melting?

So then you too think that the socialist agenda of federal government intruding into retirement (socialist security), education (only about a thousand or more programs using extorted tax dollars), medicine (medicare - medicaid), and environmentalism (EPA - Clean Water - Clean Air acts) to name just a few which are at best Constitutionally questionable should be dumped since the programs are enemies of the Constitution, right?

The key isn't the ability of first generaqtion people to speak English, although if they can, then it is a good indicator that they wish to assimilate. The key is what the 2nd generation is doing. If one is born here and is congrigating in Hispanic Ghettos speaking Spanish as their first language then they have NOT assimilated. One did not see this to a large extent in previous waves simply for the fact that previous waves did not come in in the extremely large numbers that they are now.

Another good indicator is today. Are these immnigrants waving US Flags and celebrating the fourth or do they wave Mexican flags and celebrate cinco de mayo?

Although I agree with your column, I find it curious that the fallen societies you mentioned (Roman Empire, Chinese dynasties, Ottoman Empire) were all cruel and repressive societies and certainly not any to hold up as a standard or compare to America.

Better you compare the free and democratic United States with the cradle of democracy, ancient Greece, which more closely resembles us in thought, philososphy, openmindedness, etc., and which eventually fell for the same reasons that we may fall.

Early Rome was in fact NOT a "cruel and repressive" society by the standards of the time. All societies at that time would not compare favorably with modern societies. This includes ancient Greece.

Investigate the laws and mores of Sparta. Investigate the life and death of Socrates. The fact that ancient Greece was a utopian society of freedom and democracy is a myth.

Exactly - It matters not the intentions of those that created these programs or any perceived good brought about by them. They are illegal and are such because the men that brought forth this Republic realized that a much greater good was to be derived from the application of personal freedom and individual responsiblity than could ever come from government action.

Our nation advanced faster than any in history to a position of wealth and power because of that application of freedom. Trading that freedom for government action because it is thought that a greater advance can be acheived by abandoning that which brought us to this point is madness. To believe in that madness is to ignore history and to deny human nature.

The job of the government as defined by the Constitution is to safeguard our freedom so that we may enjoy the multitude of benefits derived from liberty. Tha government is not doing that.

...make any references to Hispanics or immigration. I understand your argument completely and, I fear, you misinterpreted what I meant to say. The gest was: "Celebrate all the ethnicity you want but put national pride first." I apologize for being so unclear in my writing but I truly meant that once people become part of the "stew" (or the soup or the salad or whatever it is to be an American citizen), ethnicity must take a backseat to pride in country and allegience to your fellow citizens.

Again, sorry I seemed to be anti-anything. I am merely pro-American.

Government is not protecting us and is further working to erode our ability to protect ourselves. We are fast becoming like serfs without the benefit of castle protection and being ordered to feed the wolves by hand!

Dr. Sowell is correct of course. But as of today, The Republic is gone. It shall never return to this United States. Look around. We are looking at a socialistic economy base on government policy, probably dictated by a group of NWO believers. Think beyond the United States.

This is Communism on a world scale. It would not surprise me if the UN or whatever guise the NOW takes, dictated that the United States would grow the worlds supply of food. China or India the military and police forces (It will take millions if they are to watch us all, all the time). Communism is conservative with few actually making the big decisions. Where are we today?

It will take a new beginning for a republic to exist in America again (If it can against the rest of the world). I personally identify the beginning of the end in America with Roosevelt’s election in the mid thirties.

We have our excesses and our proclivities to shock and demean all that is sacred. But for all that we are the leader of the free world.

When the Sunami hit, survivors weren't hoping for the UN, Japan or Europe to help them. They looked to the USA. We did not dissapoint. We diverted an entire Air Craft Carrier Task Force who then donated two weeks of shower water that was airlifted to dying survivors. We are like one huge "Red Cross" or "Salvation Army" to the world.

Robert Kaplan wrote "Imperial Grunts" which goes a long way in describing the many and varied missions the military is undertaking in remote locations around the world. He is a great wordsmith, give it a try.

Regarding the usual slights we take from critics both in and out of the country for being imperialist at our core, I offer this simple but true lesson from history.

Germany and Japan through the mechanism of "Unconditional Surrender" became our property. We spent 15 years and Trillions of dollars putting them back on their feet and setting them free again. Do they follow our policies lockstep? No. Remember Schroder's recent campaign (Anti-American policy). Do they contribute to the American treasury or in history were ever forced to since WWII? The answer again is no.

We are something so different as to be every bit the anomoly that Dr. Sewell describes. My prayer is that the USA will survive all of Human history.

I would put the date a bit earlier with the North's assertion that the Southern states did not have the right to leave the Union. The power of the Federal Government expanded greatly at that point.

Power in America was to have been held by the people, the states, then the Federal Government, in that order. The order has now been reversed.

Great 4th of July food for thought
One of the most dangerous groups in this country, in my opinion, is the liberal teachers. They are doing a lot of brain washing to try to instill their liberal beliefs. The episode in Boulder, CO is jsut the latest example. On top of that they blithely change history to fit their own agendas. True history is being lost except for antique book collectors, who still have a record of the facts.

Too many libs can't see the difference between illegals and legal immigrants. In past times immigrants came here to become americans. This cockeyed notion of multi-culturalism totally defeats this notion. Now the illegals arfe here and seem far more intent on not only bringing their culture here but wanting us to adapt to them. This tail wagging the dog nonsense has too come to an end. Ending this bad idea being foisted by swimmer kennedy and his crowd has got to end. Throughout our history we have always welcomed legal immigrants who cherished the dream of becoming americans. This is what needs to be restored. If the President and the senate want to betray this country and it's historic values of citizenship earned and hard work, history will judge them badly. Hopefully new faces will take their place in congress and we can have an honest attempt at fixing this problem that the president is unable or unwilling to acknowledge, and acts with his willing accomplishes in the senate to betray our country

It's our job!
Loved the article, and read most of the comments, but not all. If I overlap, forgive me. For those who fear the government, I urge you, take it back. It's our responsibility to direct the leadership on how our country should progress. Just do it, as Nike says. I've picked up a new part time job as a government accountability officer. It doesn't pay monetarily, but the rewards of having a say in my country's government (before new laws are passed to prevent it) will echo down the corridors of time. We've seen the system work more lately than ever, and I say the water is fine, so jump in. Be independent this 4th of July, and realize that you've got to earn it.

I'm sad that you think the only way to "fix" America is to wipe it out and start over at ground zero. Did you ever have family meetings growing up where everyone came together and decided through rational (non-emotional) debate what's going to happen next in the household? With a number of adpoted siblings, we often had these gatherings. We regularly had to adjust arrangments and put new rules into place or amend old ones, but in the end, we agreed and moved on. There is yet HOPE for this nation, but not if you don't look up and see it. I urge you to look for the good in this land and support that. We can all see what's going wrong.

Excellent comments by both of you, and by most all today. This on top of another great article by Thomas Sowell.

Yes, we can find many dates in history when they have whittled away at our constitution and therefore at our liberties. One often mentioned was the creation of the Federal Reserve system in December of 1913. And both of you have come very close with the election and disaster of Franklin Roosevelt, or the after math of the civil war and it's consequences.

By the way TruLib, your name is real acknowledgment that what we call liberal today is nothing like the true meaning of the word or name. Our founders were more liberal than most can imagine. The connotation today is totally out of whack. The socialist mentality is if anything a throw back to conservatism as a odd as that may sound to some.

Dictatorships are notoriously conservative; that is they hold tight to rules for rules sake. If our present day, so called liberals, had any idea of where their plans would lead, not only us but all of them, they would suddenly stop in horror all of their stupid petitions and actions.

The big question is how, if there is a way, do we reverse direction, not just stop what is or what is obviously planned for tomorrow. They have us on the run and they know it. See Joe run. See Jane run.

I concur with Hustler that they have already stolen our country and are deep into the process of converting it into quite another. I see only bloodshed or submission. Which will it be folks.??. My own experience is that if you stomp a few cockroaches the rest run for cover like crazy. Then you have to fumigate so that they all succumb or stay away.

To tack onto Professor's "Gladiator" comment, might I add another that was spoken in the stadium after Crowe's character became the self-proclaimed leader of the group of men destined to die because they had no idea what type of attacks were coming at them. He urged those who'd been in military to to line up in formation. He then said that they only way they could survive is if they stuck together. One gladiator (surely a liberal) shouted "Every man for himself!" as the doors opened releasing several attackers. He was easily picked off, of course. Then, Crowe shouted "AS ONE!" and they formed a human box with shields out. They were able to take out the attackers.

July 4th
One of the true wonders of america is our speacial day. Unlike others, we celebrate by getting together with friends and family, enjoying a cookout and watching some event. Finishing off with fireworks spectacles and feeling blessed for living in the greatest country in the world. This day proves life can be very sweet indeed

Many of the teens I work with are "system fatigued" and very open to the concepts of self-sufficiency and accountability. A big part of counseling adjudicated teens is helping them to deal with their anger and fear appropriately, also helping them to move away from the victim mentality perpetuated in liberal social service systems. In short- I help them navigate AROUND systems that would have them as life long dependents. Happily, I am not the only one.

I know we can't put the genie back in the bottle, but there may be more resistance to an entire shift to socialism than expected.

the missus clinton with her promises to raise taxes to reward those who won't work but will vote for dims is the start. Many of our youynger citizens don't pay attention to the daily political dealings and double dealings going on in congress, but they do understand govt. stealing their money through an unfair tax system. When they can no longer get that motorcycle or boat they will quickly rethink their position about supporting the dims and their socialist agenda

For granted
I for one do not take the U.S. for granted. Our revolution was different from all others. Granted there was some harassment of Tories loyal to the British crown, but we never had a reign of terror such as the French had, nor the slaughter associated with the Russian or the Chinese.
There is the U.S. and there is all the rest. It is unfair, but flattering that there is a double standard-one standard-high-for the U.S. and another -lower-for everyone else. Sometimes it seems that the standard is made lower proportional to the badness of the behavior, e.g. for example, Communists get a pass, IslamoFascists get a pass, but the U.S. never gets a pass, especially if the action is put in use by W. or the Republicans.

I heard a lot of that from civil rights leaders in the 60s and 70s and at that time they had a point, and i still heard it from civil rights leaders in the 80s and 90s and early 0s, but these days I am not hearing at all.

Why the disconnect in Washington and among the "elites" about ILLEGAL aliens and the fundamental value of truly preserving America?

Something Middle America does not realize--> the power elites are different from you and me. They LIKE their ILLEGAL domestic help-- the ILLEGALS do not seem to be a pernicious threat when they nod deferentially from the mower on the golf course or your nice yard. The elites don't rub elbows with them jabbering in espanol at Wal-Mart, or see them overwhelming emergency rooms for "free" medical care, and THEIR children go to exclusive private schools which are not enervated by bilingualism. The first time an "elite" might truly appreciate the problem is when she gets rear-ended by an uninsured ILLEGAL driving drunk without a license who cannot speak Ingles.

The remote power people get their news from the MM Washington Post, the N.Y. Times (a reason we got snookered into Iraq), the WSJ and TIME. Those rags all believe fundamentally in ILLEGAL immigration either to be PC, or for the "cheap" labor (which is ultimately EGREGIOUSLY expensive all-in to our society and economy-- see Heritage studies). The pirates were, I believe, Muslims who transported their slaves to markets all over North Africa and western and central Asia. Well I defeintely think people like you and others at townhall love to overstate it. It serves the purpose of keeping people divided and at odds with one another, which most of the time is bad thing.

Yes that is one of the exceptions I make. Another is for the exceptionally deformed- I.E. spinal cords exposed and in horrific pain at birth also some that are born with only a brain stem. Both cases I mention put the child in unbearable pain proven by constant crying and no medicine they are given will ease it. I say this and I know what it is like to have a handicapped child. I would not have aborted him for anything.

If there is a sermon that ought to be preached on Sunday from every pulpit in America, I read it's transcript today in Thomas Sowell's article, "Taking America for Granted". The sad fact is that because the word "God" was not mentioned in the article, most people will see it as not being biblical in it's perspective.

The analogy of slavery and cancer instantly brought to mind the picture of a patient who had a rather large cancerous tumor removed in it's entirety from their body.....or rather, their forefather's body - but refused to let the doctors dispose of it.
"It's mine" they say, "it represents a deeply personal life experience for me I would prefer to hold on to it and talk about it to anyone who would listen".
While at the same time disregarding all the anti-oxidant fruits and vegetables and fresh water and exercise and healthy mental attitudes which have been proven to not only strengthen one's immune system in it's fight against cancer; but results in a healthier, stronger more fulfilling life in the process.
I guess it is easier to complain than to exercise and eat right.
Meanwhile, our forefathers are turning in their graves saying amongst themselves, "what's the matter with my boy? I dealt with the cancer without the benefit of antibiotics and clean drinking water and anesthesia and even without doctors. Eat your vegetables, exercise, study, work hard, trust God, pray, take care of your wives and your children, then buy the farm and the plantation."

There is none so blind as those that cannot see!

Jesus taught and prayed about believers becoming one as He and His father are one. The article talks about Americans refusing to be separated and fragmented and by doing so, tacitly becoming one.

I've never belonged to the ACLU, and am not real sure why I let Forrest put me in the position of defending them. But my view is that America is great because it allows for the expression of ALL non-violent views, even some repugnant ones.

Forrest wants everyone who doesn't agree with him/her to shut up and go away. That has never been the principles on which this nation was founded.

I can also remember the fun us ten to thirteen year old kids used to have at the annual Scout Jamborees in the early 1970's. This, of course, was long before the era of political correctness was ushered in.

The last part of the Scout Law is a word that in these times has little meaning unfortunately.

That word is Reverent. The Scout Law says "A scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the belief of others." It is this part of being a scout that has the ACLU all in an uproar recently.

This tax payer funded leftist organization seeks to undo the tradition of the Boy Scouts from within. Not enough tax payers are coming to the defense of this privately funded organization that teaches boys to be reverent toward God, and respectful of other religious beliefs, among the other qualities the Boy Scouts teach.

In 2000, a lesbian and agnostic couple joined with the ACLU to file a lawsuit against the city of San Diego, these people felt that they were being excluded by the BSA's religious policies in particular. Of course, the ACLU is also seeking to rid this nation of our national motto, and ban the wording of "In God we trust" from our currency.

On it's website under the heading of "Religious Liberty," the ACLU, in July of this year, applauded U.S. District Court Judge Blanche Manning's decision that bars the Pentagon from funding future Boy Scout Jamborees. This is the only youth organization funded by the Pentagon.

Two lead plaintiffs in the case, which was filed in 1999, Reverend Eugene Winkler, and Rabbi Gary Gerson stated that the judge's order helps maintain the critical constitutional principle of government neutrality towards religion.

For years, the ACLU has abused the twisting of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or the free exercise thereof." To them, those words should be freedom from religion.

But to disagree with the ACLU, is to wind up fighting them in a court of law. This is also them taking away a persons freedom of speech, which is another guarantee of the First Amendment. It comes right after guaranteeing us the freedom to exercise our own individual beliefs.

The ACLU, as some people know, was founded by Roger Baldwin, in association with Crystal Eastman. Both were members of the Communist Party.

I only wish the card carrying members of this organization knew this as well.

I also wonder if the Boy Scouts required it's members to affirm a belief in Mohammed, Bhudda, or Allah, would they be as adamant in their goal of erasing God from not only this privately funded organization, but from the rest of society as well?

In my opinion, for the ACLU go sue the Boy Scouts of America for their fundamental tradition of having it's members affirm a belief in God is to sue them of their basic rights of free speech, and freedom of religion.

I would rather my son have a belief in God, which he does. I don't want a godless organization such as the ACLU telling me, or my son who, or what we can, or can't believe in.

When the founding fathers wrote the Constitution, they never could have imagined an organization that would try its level best to erase God from a society that was founded on religious philosophy and principles.

To all card carrying members of the ACLU, I invite you to reconsider giving this organization your yearly dues. You don't realize it, but they are also seeking to take away your freedoms as well.

"On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to god and my country, to obey the scout laws to help other people at all times, and to myself physically fit and morally straight."

The scout laws have number 12 as "reverent". period. There never is any mention officially of god or any religion other than I have just quoted. It is undoubtedly the finest young man's or woman's organization in the world.

Sound like real trouble makers don't they. You would never want a boy or girl raised this way for a neighbor or coworker or to help you with any kind of problem. You certainly wouldn't expect them to help you if you're under attack in war or in a local alley way. And certainly they couldn't be expected to be good citizens and supportive of their community. Probably wouldn't raise their own children properly nor believe in their country.

As a strong conservative (but not an evangelical by any means) I again agree with Dr. Sowell... but... one major cause of apathy-decline and such of our beloved country is moral decay... the breakup of the family being a major societal cancer. Moral neutrality. PC- ism runs amok. The growth of the federal govt to the point demos always demonize repubs to voters with the words... "they will take away your" (fill in the blank)... dependency decays... copying the lowest achieving subcultures decays, reducing individualism to a cultural sin decays. Secular socialism kills a culture. The modern liberal is simply a secular socialist, nothing more or less.

one reason libs are more anti-religious is that most religions call for a moral code. A set of rules we know and understand that guides our behavior. This loss of a moral code than allows that everything is okay and thus there is no consequence for bad behavior. The further decay is that it leads to a loss of societal values. Thus this flawed notion of multi-culturalism takes over and when all cultures are equal no culture has value. This leads to people who no longer value our society and stand by and what it destroyed by interlopers and invaders who will never know what we stand for. I have a major problem with you using the b word to refer to me, and now I am getting a little hot, but I am coming to the conclusion that you are not worth my time. But then another part of me wants to reach out to you and minister to you and get to know Jesus Christ, so I am somewhat torn.

Kudos to Mr. Sowell! Without eternal vigilance and effort to learn American history and participation in the electoral process we risk losing all that we celebrate every July 4th. Yesterday I and many other true conservatives and American patriots celebrated one more year of American sovereignty thanks to how we made our voices heard by the Senate, the President and congress. The internet, blogs, and the medium of talk radio collaborated to inform and focus our concerns about the latest failed Amnesty legislation and we killed it once again. But those special interests are powerful and will not stop their efforts to open the borders and allow for unending illegal immigration to help their bottom line at the expense of the middle class and national sovereignty. Stay vigilant and use the power of your voice!

Did you fly the flag yesterday?
Dr. Sowell makes some excellent points. This is a great country, and we take far too much for granted.

This prompts me to raise a question: did you fly the American flag yesterday (i.e., the fourth of July)? I had to run some errands on the fourth. I must have driven at least six or seven miles on an open highway, and I passed dozens of homes. Do you know how many of them were flying the flag? There were six, counting my own home. SIX!!!

Why didn't you fly the flag yesterday? Do you disagree with the government on some issues? So do I, but I still flew my flag. Do you oppose the war in Iraq? You anti-war people keep telling us that you still love America, even though you oppose the war. How about proving it by flying the flag?

With all of its imperfections, America is still the greatest country on earth. The flag represents our freedoms, including the freedom to protest. A great price was paid for those freedoms, so don't ever take them for granted. If you didn't fly the flag this year, please rectify that mistake next year.

Slavery
If asked MOST Americans would say that slavery was one of the worst blights upon this wonderful nation.

What is galling when the subject is brought up, is the pure arrogance of many of those in the discussion. Most never mention the fact that many of the slaves brought to the USA were already slaves in Africa. Some were slaves to their one tribe or another and simply sold for gold, weapons and rum. Others were captured specifically to be sold for foreign slavery. Although slavery is vile at it's best, the living condiditions of slaves brought to the US, were probably, for the most part, better than their conditions in Africa.

We have heard unbelievable numbers of slaves taken out of Africa. The figures often exceed 100 Million, with some as high as 250 Million and others at a staggering 400 Million. Let's take the middle figure. To transport 250 Million slaves in ships that would do well to accomodate 400 in their hole, and over a range of say 100 years (no. of years reduced to compensate for low levels of slaves in the earlier years) and 365 days in a year, it would require 17 fully loaded ships each and every day transporting slaves. In addition, if half of those aboard the slave ships died in transit, there would have been 125 Million slaves in the US. As the current population of blacks is 35 Million, and their population continues to grow, WHAT HAPPENED? Common sense dictates that the number is absurd.

Those condemning whites for enslaving negroes from Africa always fail to acknowledge the huge number of whites that were enslaved by negroes in the northern and western parts of Africa. Condemnation, to these people, seems to be a one-way street.

Well said about the Boy Scouts, and thanks. Coming from a marine, what you said has special meaning. My son just spent his Saturday cutting grass with his Patrol at the church that is kind enough to let the Troop use their facilities. The guys call the adults Mr. or Mrs., shake hands and look adults in the eye when they talk to them, spend dozens of hours a year on service projects for the community, mentor younger kids coming into the Troop, etc. By the way, they respect our flag and look up to members of our armed forces. Certainly a subversive group that we as a country need to keep a jaundiced eye on.

I do love reading the columns of Dr. Sowell. I also enjoy reading the posts in Townhall. It shows there are many out there who want the US to succeed and not to become irrelavent. As a child of the 60's & 70's I can honestly say this is not the same country I knew growing up. We had standards and morals that were agreed upon by most of the people. Were there differences, of course, there have always been differences since the signing of the Declaration.

Our founding fathers based our system on Judeo-Christian beliefs. They did not say one religion should be considered over another and that includes athiesm. It seems today when there is a difference or question on moral and legal issues then we all have to become athiests. I tully believe the writers and signers of the Declaration and Constitution would be rather saddened by the direction of religious freedom in this country.

We are also be pushed by the left to accept the sacraments of multicultralism and environmentalism. Multicultralism has greyed over most the black and white lines that used to guide this land.

Today across the globe many people are showing their allegience to Pope AL Gore and his religion of "manmade global warming". Not realizing the whole idea is a theory with little to prove it. Is the earth warming? I believe it may be heading for a climate change, but man doesn't control it. I remember in high school in the late 70's our physics teacher preaching that the earth was going suffer from "heat death" and we were all going to freeze to death. Not 5 years later the global warming crowd started saying we were going to drown because all the glaciers were going to melt. We have hard time predicting next week's weather not to mention the next century's. To all those attending today, when Pope Al passes the collection plate give all you can so it can be put in his pocket. Don't forget to buy your carbon credits either.
This what happens when schools concentrate on self esteem and social action and not on the reason they exist, to educate and develop the ability to reason. We should conserve, recycle and manage ourselves to maintain our environment.

We as conservatives are up against clever sounding phrases and slogans, and wild assertions that sound great but have no reasonable foundation in facts. I caught a segment on the show NOW oN PBS. They were showing the difficulties of the a single mother and her family trying to make ends meet. The key quote from her and I paraphrase was "The government is here to help me isn't that why they are here?" I believe this the most telling problem we have as a nation today and thay is the entitlemant mentality. Until we throw of the thinking of the goernment owes me or they are here to take care of me, etc. We will be chasing our tails and not moving forward. Which means we will be heading backward.

Happy 231st America some of us and hopefully one day most of us are fighting to keep the fundamental structure and beliefs from being destroyed.

Slavery
Philip Burnham, in the article "Selling Poor Steven" published in the February/March 1993 issue of American Heritage, found that in the US Census of 1830 there were 3,775 free blacks who owned 12,740 black slaves- So, how do we handle reparations where THESE folks are concerned?

Taking America for Granted
While I found it easy to agree with most of your comments I found some of you statements a little off base. You stated more Europeans were enslaved off the coast of North Africa as part of the slave trade in Africa then during the slave trade to the America's I assume you took this information from the work done by Dr. Robert Davis at Ohio State University. What your article did not state was that Dr. Davis did not claim the numbers of European Christian slaves was near that of the Atlantic African slave trade. What he did state was the number of European Christians was much higher than previously stated. Dr. Davis states that he estimates 1-1.25 million European Christians were enslaved between 1530 and 1780. He also states these numbers (estimates) were done based on the limited records available. This is still a much higher number than the hundreds of thousands that was the previous estimate. Dr. Davis also notes that these numbers do not reach the 10-12 million humans transported during the Atlantic slave trade. My post is not to determine if one form of slavery is worse than another. My belief is the best way to make sure we are not "taking America for granted" is to make sure we educate our citizens with "facts" and not "information". I hope in the future you articles can continue to reflect this value and appeal to intellect over emotion.
