Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The disbarment of Durham District Attorney Michael Nifong should be just the first step in remedying the gross and cynical fraud of last year's "rape" case against Duke University lacrosse players.

Not only is Nifong still liable to civil lawsuits from the three young men whose lives he tried to ruin, and criminal prosecution for his obstruction of justice and making false statements to a judge, there are many other people who disgraced themselves in hyping a lynch mob atmosphere when this case first broke last year.

The New York Times, which splashed these Duke students' pictures on the front page, along with inflammatory charges against them, and went ballistic on its editorial page, carried the story of Nifong's disbarment for prosecuting them on page 16.

The 88 Duke University faculty members who took out a hysterical ad, supporting those local loudmouths who were denouncing and threatening the Duke students, have apparently had nothing at all to say now.

Not only did many Duke University professors join the lynch mob atmosphere, so did the Duke University administration, which got rid of the lacrosse coach and cancelled the team's season, without a speck of evidence that anybody was guilty of anything.

This is one of the few times when Jesse Jackson is speechless, even though he was loudly supporting the bogus "rape" charges last year.

A local civil rights activist even had the gall to accost the mother of one of the accused students at Nifong's disbarment hearings to say that she still believes they were guilty.

The sad and tragic fact is that the civil rights movement, despite its honorable and courageous past, has over the years degenerated into a demagogic hustle, promoting the mindless racism they once fought against.

Although the committee that disbarred Michael Nifong said many things that needed to be said, they muddied the waters by saying that Nifong may have deceived himself before he deceived others.

Nothing that District Attorney Nifong did suggests that he ever thought these players were guilty or that he ever intended to bring them to trial.

The photo lineup presented to the stripper was so completely different from standard procedure that it was virtually an invitation for a judge to throw out any identification resulting from it -- and without that identification, there was no case.

This was not about winning a case. It was about winning an election.

Nifong could not allow a standard lineup to be used to have the accuser identify her alleged attackers, or else her unreliability would have been exposed early on, depriving him of a case to use to get the black vote in his election.

There is not the slightest reason to believe that Nifong was deceived or mistaken. He was not some kid fresh out of law school. He had decades of experience as a prosecutor. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Nor was the New York Times a naive ingenue in these matters. It had backed Al Sharpton's fraudulent accusations of rape in the Tawana Brawley case, which had the same politically correct elements of a black woman accusing white men of rape.

Nor were the 88 Duke faculty members who promoted a lynch mob atmosphere naive. Most were from departments promoting the "race, class, and gender" vision of victimhood.

This case served their purposes. That trumped any question about whether the charges were true or not.

Don't expect any of these people to recant or apologize. But be aware of how wide and how deep the moral dry rot goes.

That such people are teaching students at an elite university is a chilling thought. That they promote a campus atmosphere where political correctness trumps the search for truth is painful.

That such attitudes and such atmospheres are not peculiar to Duke University, but are common on elite college campuses from coast to coast is a time bomb with the potential to destroy individuals and ultimately undermine the whole society.

Rocker Are You A Troll
Who read the article to you Rocker, who helped you write the posting? You couldn't have the wit to do either by your self. Or are you just stoned Rocker?

To Kill a Mockingbird -- In Reverse
This whole sordid mess reminds me of "To Kill a Mockingbird" only in reverse this time, and they almost succeeded.

It did my heart good to see Nifong get his due in the end, but as Dr. Sowell points out, there is a whole Nifong knee-jerk cheering section that needs to be called on the carpet as well.

Nifong's Enablers
Lost in the satisfaction over Mr. Nifong getting his well deserved comeuppance is the fact that he had help in his abusive misuse the criminal justice system.

The judiciary and the organized bar, both of which now are eagerly joining the condemnation of what Mr. Nifong did in the bogus rape case, had to recognize what he was doing . . . and they stood by inactive and silent as he very openly and publicly persecuted three innocent young men and vilified their fellow team members. Now they are piling onto Mr. Nifong because he has embarrassed them.

In addition, we would do well to focus -- and focus seriously -- on the institutional failure of the grand jury system. What was presented to the grand jury as the basis for the indictment that it returned against Mr. Nifong's victims? Did the grand jurors just sit blindly like potted plants without asking any questions and do as they were told by the prosecutor. Grand juries have been perverted into prosecutorial tools, but they were intended to stand as a shield against government efforts to target individuals for criminal prosecution without any reasonable basis for doing so. They were to serve to keep an abusive state in check, and they currently serve only as an adjunct to it.

Rocker is a prime example
of the damage done by the poverty pimps - as Walter Williams has called them - such as Jesse Jackson and the "Reverend" (where did he get his divinity degree and where is his church?) Al Sharpton?
The syrupy hate dribbling from Rocker is sad and pathetic when I remember the great and true black man who was the first one of his race who had to fight to get the Professional Engineer designation in that particular state in which I lived at the time.
That man was my mentor in engineering as I started out in that career in the EARLY 1960s - before the Civil Rights Act.
He NEVER ONCE played the race card nor whimpered about being hard done to. Sure, he may have had to been TWICE AS GOOD, but he never boo-hooed and by doing so got respect by everybody who ever came in contact with him.
God Bless You, Art, whereever you are now, FRIEND.

Thank you, Dr. Sowell
What would we do without you???? You are truly one of America's treasures and I want you to know how much I appreciate your wisdom.

Dr. Sowell Strikes again!
I am not sure how Dr. Sowell does it, but somehow he hits the nail on the head each and everytime. I agree with Dr. Sowell (and I am black). Where the hell is Al, Jesse, "the new black panther party" and the rest of the accusers? The "new york times" makes my stomach turn. They are quick to put National Security news on the front page, but when they are dead wrong on an issue good luck with them admitting their wrong. I hope they all (groups mentioned above) get what's coming to them. Nifong.... should be made to clean the lockers of the Duke LaCrosse players for years to come.

Nifong, Duke-- Live In Infamy
Forever more, the term "Nifonged" will be part of the legal lexicon. Some reflexively bemoan that the less privileged sometimes do not get justice in such situations, but that begs other questions. There is NO WAY that these falsely accused young white men would have been vilified and summarily tried and convicted in the PC court of public opinion if they had not been who THEY were.

A lynch mob of 88 supercilious, presumptuous college profs at Duke almost IMMEDIATELY signed a statement indicting those boys-- presuming guilt-- "lynch-mob justice" justice in the kangaroo court of leftist PC public opinion. There were student demonstrations condemning them in judge and jury fashion. This was leftist McCarthyism pure and simple!!!

Furthermore, there were a slew of lady lawyers (not even all liberal) on TV who kept saying with imperious, presumptuous, Femi-Nazi certitude that, "These boys are almost surely guilty of something"-- people like leftist Gloria Allred and even a couple of FOX foxy lawyers like Lis Wheil; they ALL rushed to judgment, helping to hang these guys in effigy even before a fair hearing.

Predictably, the "Reverunds" Jessuh Jackson and Al Sharpton in Tawana Brawley fashion trotted out the pity party for the poor "victim" and offered her a scholarship to better herself-- is there one which will teach her not to fabricate egregious lies which needlessly fan the flames of racial discord?! [She had made similar false rape charges before, but few called attention to this inconvenient fact, even though the earlier alleged perpetrators were black.]

Nifong got what he justly deserved, but where are the apologies from those so quick to judge?! He was like the thief who was not the least bit sorry about his transgression-- just terribly sorry that he got caught. Where are Jessuh and Al
Sharpton and their "professional poor person" money-scamming ilk saying that injustice is injustice-- PERIOD! Payback is a rightful bitxh for Nifong, but how do these boys REALLY get their good names back?

This story dominated the news in the MM initially and stayed prominent as long as the upper middle class whites were presumed guilty in the group think of the liberal media, but the resolution exonerating the boys was a mere footnote. Yet amazingly, there had been voices of reason from the very start of this travesty of justice who said that the alleged "facts" simply did not add up-- not even a little bit. ALL who rushed to judgment should cringe at their presumptuous, imperious rectitude, especially the PC types who readily bemoan double standards of justice. These boys might have been THEIR innocent sons dragged through the mud. Where do THEY get real justice?!

Wildwest -- John Galt -- on Racism
quoth wildwest: "when asked to prove that racism exists there is always the hesitation as they can't provide examples but I am assured that I am aware it exists."

You apparently aren't asking the right people. There are always limitless concrete examples, and I don't even have to ask.

They are rarely examples beyond annoyances -- e.g., the being "watched in the convenience store" example that always comes up -- the "DWB; Driving While Black" -- etc. While it's rare to find an example of where racism actually holds somebody back; prevents someone from making a good living -- the annoyances still serve as "proof" that things like Affirmative Action are still necessary.

quoth John Galt: "Was racism EVER really a problem?"

Yessir, racism *has* had a history of holding people back literally due to skin color. People have been hanged for inter-racial dating. Preferential treatment has been given to those with the proper credentials -- i.e., the correct skin color. "Irish Need Not Apply" is real history. This nation *has* treated minorities as second class citizens.

The point that needs to be driven home is that it *IS* history, *NOT* current events. Blacks might still be "watched" in some convenience stores -- but today, there is nothing to stop blacks from *owning* said store.

John Galt
In discussions with blacks and their lack of progress in addressing the issues confronting their communities I always hear that the lasting effects of slavery and jim crow are the reasons they don't progress. At what time does this nonsense cease to have relevance with them? Apparently never. But like all addictive personalities they have been brainwashed to believe that whites are always racist and that without government preferential programs there will never be opportunities afforded them, and failures are never their responsibility. As long as white liberal guilt feeds into this over-riding sense of victimization the problem will never go away. when asked to prove that racism exists there is always the hesitation as they can't provide examples but I am assured that I am aware it exists. Can this thinking be overcome? It would appear so ingrained that his becomes the civil rights legacy. Without government assistance and prefernces we will reamain secondclass citizens and all whites are responsible as they have all profited from the effects of slavery. This was not Martin Luther King's message but it has been vocalized by the jesse jackson types and that is his legacy of failure

Has It Always Been This Way?
Was racism EVER really a problem?
For my entire adult life I've been hearing people hurling charges of racism and discrimination that to me were clearly not justified.
Finally, I've begun to wonder if perhaps it's always been this way. Maybe most of the historical anecdotes purportedly demonstrating racism were just as unsubstantiated as the charges against the Duke lacrosse players. Maybe racism never was the serious problem that we've been brainwashed to believe. Perhaps we've been taught our history by the Jesse Jacksons and New York Timeses of the world.

Just some food for thought for today's race-card players who ought to be concerned that they're tainting the legacy of the civil rights movement.

Great commentary here!
I notice in the list of profs that only two were from the "hard" sciences, math and physics. Apparently, the one from physics has been spending too much time in the study of "relativity."

fergus your quote
"Leftists are GREAT at apologies... just not for the things they actually do wrong" should be a
bumper sticker! What a great line.

What are the other losers thinking now?
So now we're all thinking maybe this isn't the first time Mr. Nifong has done this. Over the decades of practicing, how many losers and winners are now feeling anxious? Hope? Like it could've gone the other way?

Ray
less you forget. Dr Sowell forgot more than any lib will ever know or understand. I know why the great intellectuals are conservs. They are hard wired to ignore lib dribble as meaningless to any discussion. Libs can whine about how they care about the great injustices they see around them. Their problem: they can't act to solve them but they do care

fergus
the problem with lib and clinton apologies are that apologizing for past events and things you never did are meaningless. When Clinton apologized for ignoring Ruanda and allowing thousands to get hacked to death was a pitiful attempt to show he only misread the tea leaves. Polls told him not to act. Cowardice prevented him from stopping a humanitarian crisis. But give him credit, there wasn't a meaningless treaty he wouldn't sign, and tears he wouldn't shed for past sins throughout the world. What a guy

Rocker
Who says that a political commentator with a well known and openly acknowledged political bias, such as Dr. Sowell, has to satisfy anyone else’s notion of 'fairness and balance'? That requirement is applicable only to news outlets and even then not to their editorial pages/programs. The complaint from the right is not that it is unfair for the MSM to be biased in it's editorial opinions. We may complain about and reject their positions because we believe them to be wrong but not because it is unfair or imbalanced for them to pronounce it in that forum. The complaint from the right is that the MSM is not 'fair and balanced' in its news coverage within which we are expecting facts. That being the case, personal opinions ought not be present because they are presumed not to be present. Otherwise, you see, those opinions may be taken as the facts we are expecting and need in order to form our own opinions. Editorialists and Dr. Sowell are perfectly free to express their opinions in other forums where opinion is the admitted content.

You, of course, are free not to consume any of those forums with which you take issue. You are also free to tell Dr. Sowell to shut-up but it really isn’t fair for you to do so with any expectation that anybody cares.

Homburg
"Being on the left you never have to say your sorry. Ever"

Now, that's just not true; Leftist apologize all the time!

Leftists apologize to black people for enslaving them.

Leftists apologize to Indians for massacring them and stealing their land.

Leftists apologize to cows for murdering and eating them.

Leftists USED to apologize to Jews for the Holcaust... until their hatred for Israel drove them to the point of actual anti-Semitism, at which point it became un-chic to apologize to Jews anymore.

But no, Leftists are GREAT at apologies... just not for the things they actually do wrong.

rocker
How about you provide some back-up data for your assertion about the guy who was wrongfully shot by the cops, that demonstrates that a) the cops KNEW rather unequivocally that they had the wrong guy, and b) in the process of shooting him, they did everything they could to ignore and obscure that knowledge?

At THAT point, your comparison might have seom validity to it.

hey rocksforbrains..
STOP with the liberal dribble..just stop..you cant defend nifong, the 88 faculty, the bum panthers, sharpton and lover jessie jacomo..for their actions..they were all wrong dummy..get off the post..modern frckin liberal ya side with evil over good, right over wrong in, now get this,THE BEHAVIOURS THAT LEAD TO FAILURE OVER THOSE THAT WILL LEAD TO SUCCESS..THATS YOU..JUST GO, dont open your pie hole anymore..your wrong, wrong as wrong can be on this...

Duke and the left
Being on the left you never have to say your sorry. Ever

rocker
You are so ignorant that it is comical. Selective outrage? That would be you and the Demwits. You seem to think that it's all hunky dory since they didn't go to jail. Well beezlebub it wasn't for lack of trying. What about their reputations? What about their suspensions? What about the millions of dollars spent in attorney fees? What about the fact Nifong did all of this in the name of getting re-elected? What about the coach who lost his job? What about the team losing the season and losing their scholarships? All this because someone lied and felt the need for attention. All this because a prosecutor cared way more about himself than the Justice system and right and wrong. Bet you would think differently if it was you. Go back into the hole you crawled out of. You are not smart enough for this forum.

flagday 1960
As I recall the announcement, miss mangrum was not charged due to her mental condition. The prosecutor considered her mentally unstable. If professionals concurred in this opinion maybe there was some justification in not persuing the law for filing false charges. Did she play a part in this travesty, there is no doubt. But Nifong, the 88 and all the remaining culprits with their rush to judgement , in my opinion carry more guilt. Perhaps letting her off is more humane than sending someone who was used to further political ambitions of an unprincipled attorney to serve time in prison

The STRIPPER - where's she?
Why's everyone, even Mr.Sowell here, let the phony accuser off scott free? Why is it that women so frequently get a free pass, or at least a hefty discount? The stripper'll be swapping e-m's w/ Tawana Brawley about how you can ruin lives, get exposed as a thoughtless liar, then shrug it off & walk away. Forget blacks being angry about race-baiters, where are the women who should be calling for the stripper being held to account? This goes back to the feminists' self-contradictory premises: Women aren't only equal, to men, but better, but, any time it serves 'em, they can fall back on their status as "special". The players should sue the stripper for every penny Jesse Jackson gave her to avoid future exploitation by whites.

Rocker
This is about a prosecutor who violated his oath of office to uphold the law. Nobody believes this an isolated case. You however can only see things through your racist perception of America. If an injustice can occur here, it can occur anywhere. The news media , the university, and the race pimps, Sharpton and jackson were all willing partners in this travesty. It is a shame you are so limited in your thinking that you only see this as rich white boys getting a pass. Perhaps if you climb off your cross of victimhood you could access the overall picture

Please find a way to get Dr Sowell's "Unfinished Bueiness" published in the last edition of the Duke paper. The Group of 88 and the so called President Brodhead have escaped with moral murder. The school has now paid off the former coach, the players and their families and Brodhead will now schedule Danny Glover as his first speaker for the new year in September. If a contribution is needed for the placement of this Dr Sowell please advise

Best Wishes

rocker
I see you have crawled out from under your rock to cry about racism. When the rev jackson worked in a restaurant and spit on the salads of white people before serving them was that an act of love?

Another good column
by Dr. Sowell. I don't think it will be long before Durham County and the State of NC settle.

Wild West
"Essentially a whole crew of unemployables. Because universities exist, they exist. Without a university structure in which they recieve compensation for neglible contributions to society they would be no different than those you see collecting bottles and living under bridge"

Truer words were never spoken. I am a remodeling contractor in Durham and have worked on several of the 88's houses. I've gotten to know them and here's what I've discovered:

Most of them were the children of academics and learned early on how to succeed in an academic setting. However, they have poor personal skills, are physically inept, and don't know how to do useful things. Much of what they say can be fit on a bumber sticker. They are childish, naive, self-absorbed and pretentious. They preach the gospel of diversity but they live in nice houses in predominantly white neighborhoods. Durham is about 50% black and there are untold numbers of Spanish-speaking people but they invariably call white males (like me) when they need work done on their houses. Yet they usually have nothing but contempt for tradesmen with white skin.

The news was leaked
An email was leaked to Duke's newspaper, The Chronicle, that the settlement with the players relieves any liability on the part of the Gang of 88. That's at least one admission that they have some liability for this mess.

Sorry for the typo
I meant the Gang of 88, but maybe I was two thirds of the way in the right direction. Perhaps they should be called the Gang of 666.

The Gang of 66
The Gang of 88 has been removed from the Duke page for the African American Studies Department (figures). Here are their names and departments. I suggest we all start emailing them. Use the Duke faculty directory to find their email addresses.

I have to agree with you whole heartedly. I hope these young men go after the other culprits as well. This country needs to learn a lesson about justice.

Nifong's and Duke's Crimes
Until the crimes committed by Nifong and Duke University are addressed, there will be no justice.

There is a lot of unfinished business:

>>Nifong and all his assistants should be indicted, convicted and imprisoned for perjuring themselves to a grand jury.

>> The president of Duke's behavior should be brought before the grand jury to answer the charges that Duke broke the law by making false allegations that led to the false indictment
of the lacrosse players.

>> The police officers responsible for the brutality against the black taxi driver should be fired, indicted for civil rights violations and imprisoned. The Raleigh chief of police should be fired.

>>>Nifong's role in the police brutality should be investigated as well, followed by legal action as required.

>>The lacrosse players, and the fired lacrosse coach should hit Nifong and the local taxpayers, and Duke University each with >$100 million lawsuits for false criminal charges and slander.

>>EAch of the 88 Duke faculty should be hit with multimillion dollar lawsuits for slander as well. Criminal charges should be filed as appropriate. The same for the NY Times, and the civil rights group mentioned in Sowell's column.

Only when the lawless, predatory hoodlums responsible for the false indictments and jailing of the Lacrosse players are themselves in prison, and those who slandered financially destroyed will justice be done.

This case
The cultural implications of this case are obvious, as we have seen stated here. These are in fact terrifying. However, I am concerned on a personal level as well.

I have 2 boys ages 17, and 20. The youngest is going to be a Senior in High School, and the oldest a Junior in college. When I look at this case I see a 3 fornunate families that had the resources to carry the fight through to the end. I don't have those same resources and I have made it clear to my boys that I don't. This case never would have had this outcome if the Duke boys had been reperesented by public defenders. It is a crime in and of itself that someone can make a claim against someone else, and cause that person to spend a fortune to defend themselves, and the claimant has no responsibilty, their legal costs being covered by the state. This case is great example of the need for a "loser pays" system.

Unfinished Biz???????
To Wildwest;
You're telling me. I'll take the Newark,NJ of 1955 any day of the week compared to what "progressivism" has turned the place into today. Imagine a city that elects Sharpe James as it's mayor for 24 years and then wonders why it's broke.

Pete
when it is easier to live as a victim there is no incentive to achieve. As a member of poor whites of european descent we were told that without an education and putting your nose to the stone you had no future. Back in the 60's our impossible dream was a college degree, a house with 3 bedrooms and two cars. Hard work and a few lucky breaks allowed us to exceed all of that and more. I feel neither guilt for success nor any desire to share with those unwilling to share my life's experience. We had no advocacy groups pushing us, merely the desire to asccomplish something with our lives. The victim class demands given and not earned benefits. Why do libs think we are obligated to help[ those who have chosen not to earn their own way?

John,

The best way to contact Dr. Sowell is to call the Hoover Institute at Stanford University and leave a message with the administrative secretary there and include the details of your request. I am hopeful they might be able to hook you up with Dr. Sowell or at least his assistant. It is a worthy quest.

Unfinished Biz???
Fifty plus years of civil rights "movements",great societies, new frontiers, headstarts, acorns, pushes and rainbows and what do we have to show for it? Al Sharpton? Unlivable cities? Public education in the toilet? Intercollegiate sporting events turned into gang rumbles? Minor league sports franchises posing as universities? Bloods & Crips? La Raza? Forty two years of Ted Kennedy's lies about immigration? Mike Nifong? Why?????????All because white adults bit their tongues when some two bit demagogue or race hustler threw out the slavery gambit? 600,000 Americans died to erase that "peculiar institution" which had been a bone of contention since 7/4/1776. Nobody has been a slave in this country since 1865 and since so many Americans of today are the descendants of the immigrants from Europe who came after the Civil War, what is the point? The word “Racism” is a ploy meant to give decent people pause so that the hustlers can sneak in what they want whether it’s Kennedy’s immigration lies or Ward Churchill’s tenure. It must be fought. If Al Sharpton is the product of the “Civil Rights Movement”, white people have nothing to feel guilty about

Dr. Sowell's column, 'Unfinished Busines
Dear Dr. Sowell,

I couldn't find an e-mail for you, so I post here. I think your column should be published in a full page ad in the Duke campus newspaper, the Chronicle. They have ended for the year, but have one final edition, the largest of the year, that is also mailed to students' homes, on 25 July.

The deadline for submission is 27 June. The first thing I need is your permission to reprint your column, "Unfinished Business," in that paper. Please get back to me asap. (You have given me permission to reprint one of your columns, before.)

And anyone else who feels that this column should be published before the Dike community, please e-mail me.

When I returned to a large southern state university in '90 to finish my BA in anthropology, the overwhelming majority of faculty and other students were smug leftists, to be sure, but most could at least carry their end of a conversation without lapsing into hysterical rant mode. That all changed in November 1999. Following Bush's first election, it's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers has infected the entire college of arts and sciences. My advice is to keep your eyes on the prize, your head down, and your yap shut. Your opinions are not only unwelcome, but expressing them is academic suicide.

Who' next...
How about now we go after Johnny Sutton for his misconduct in the prosecution of border patrol agents and Fitsgerald for his misconduct in persuing an investigation after he knew there was no crime?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Jamie, from experience, depending on what field you enter, you will find either many or only some radically left students. Whichever it may turn out to be for you, the way to approach them is "individually" or with another student with a bent toward your way of thinking. If you try to approach two or more of these college lefties they will try shouting you down. They do that for two reasons -- i.e. - that is the only way they know how to operate and they reinforce each other; and, they try to "out impress" each other.

But, one V one you can make them start to think a little (if their brain hasn't been completely fried) about a given subject in which you are personally approaching expert knowledge and you have at your finger-tips factual information and URL's to which you can send them. If you don't have those two items (and some patience) don't even bother trying -- just ignore them. If they approach you and you don't feel confident or just don't want to engage, tell them to FO. They will understand completely since the F word is the major staple of their vocabulary anyway.

Good Article Dr.-But where's Crystal ...
Mangum's name? What about her culpability? There were many, many, many, chances for her to say- I was WRONG! I LIED!!!!
Why does she get a pass?? She KNOWINGLY let the whole lacrosse team be dragged through the mud and the coach fired. Shet let the members of HER community threaten and abuse these boys and their families. DID SHE EVER TRY TO STOP IT???!!
WHY such LOW standards of decency? Because she's black? a stripper? low income?
I thought we were told that she was a fine example of a hardworking single mother-college student? Surely she knows right from wrong. Or was it okay because the boys were white?

Nifong and the professors
Don't hold your breath for any of these people to be punished. They will whine like true lbs that they were only using their 1st amendment rights. These college profs and the presidents of these colleges are all arrogant elitist who consider them above the law and the ethical code most of us live by.Ward Chuchill is still around.

Duke boys trade integrity for profit!

Duke President Brodhead and board of trustees buy the silence of Duke students David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann:

http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2007/06/settlement.html

Travesty Alert! President Brodhead denies any complicity in the whole sordid affair:

http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2007/06/disbar_statement.html

"As Duke University’s president, I resolve to do my part to repair the harm unleashed by Mr. Nifong’s actions and to move forward from this painful episode."
_________________________________________________

Dear Sir,

Were that those were more than mere weasel words and we could expect your immediate resignation in shameful remorse. As Duke's president, didn't you ever hear the phrase, "The buck stops here?"

I have never before seen such a pathetic attempt to wrap one's guilty, complicit self in such an ill fitting coat of Teflon denial.

Mike Nifong's inappropriate actions didn't include yanking out your backbone, Mr. Brodhead. You fired the lacrosse team's coach, canceled their season and gave free rein to your gang of 88 PC mini-weasels all by yourself.

Let's hope the only Teflon you ever see is at the bottom of the proverbial frying pan as your career at Duke is thoroughly cooked.

Think well and resolve that.

At 40 years old
I am fixin to attend UCF in the fall to complete something. I really fear the PC attitude so prevalant today on campuses. I am not a PC kind of guy. I would like to ask if any of you have done this also and how you dealt with it, as I have no clue. How does one deal with the naiive propogandized kids?

Easy solution
Sue all 88 "professors", the New York Times, and Nifong into poverty. If I'm on the deciding jury, those 88 "professors" and Nifong will effectively be exempt from the protections of the 13th Amendment, and simply have any and all assets they now have, and will ever receive, transferred directly to the falsely accused, and ownership of the NYT, and all its child affiliates, will be divied up among the falsely accused.

They monsters INTENTIONALLY slandered an libeled these kids for political reasons. They must be made an example of. We can't stand aside and let these left wing, lawless, shills (but I repeat myself) destroy what was once a great nation by pulling nonsense like this.

THE DUKE 88
Essentially a whole crew of unemployables. Because universities exist, they exist. Without a university structure in which they recieve compensation for neglible contributions to society they would be no different than those you see collecting bottles and living under bridges. Sitting in meetings telling yourself and others of your ilk that you are morally and intellectually superior to the great unwashed in general and to the cold hearted conservs in particular don't make it so. Unfortunately tenure allows them to pursue in their fantasy that they are not only someone but someone important. During my college days during the 60's they were apparent, today they run the asylum

The creep should rot in jail.
If one of those boys was my child I would not rest until Nifong was totally destroyed in every way possible. The man is a disgrace. As far as the black people, if they continue to remain so gullible with their voting habits, they will never advance themselves in this society.

Because of this racial incident, I have come to believe that the white people need a white counterpart to Jesse Jackson to scare away anything that might be racial. Screaming, looting, rioting and burning seems to work miracles in this country. Maybe it's our turn.

Liberals Gone Silent
Where are all the progressives aka liberals that we always see here? How about the 88 Duke professors lets hear from them. Who was the instigator that put them together? Let that person step up and respond to Dr Sowell and these posts. Does any one know how much that ad costs?

Nifong and justice
in my twisted mind Nifong will become the designated soap retreiver in the men's shower stalls and learn the meaning of jail house justice, or would that be a designated act of love. Which ever scenerio I am sure that look of arogance will be replaced by one of surprise. In prison could Nifong get nifonged?

Names of Duke profs
To kaffir with a capital K and others:
You can find the names of the 88 profs in the Comments to D'Souza's June 18 piece "Now what about those Duke professors"

Faculty website
The faculty members who wrote the letter started their own website as well. It is http://www.concerneddukefaculty.org and there is a link at the bottom of the page where you can get their names.

Tried and true tactics of the left
Nifong was merely using typical left wing tactics by race baiting and inciting class envy. As one poster has already mentioned, these tactics usually work for them.
I see Nifong doing quite well within the dnc. If I were rahm emanuel I would be concerned. This guy could replace emanuel as the dnc pit bull.

Once again, hypocrisy at its best!
The fact that Sharpton has yet to come out with an apology of any sort speaks volumes. Tawana Brawley, Duke players....the man who is the first to yell "Fire!" when he can get political (read: $'s) leverage suddenly become a deaf mute when he turns out to be totally mistaken and actually harmful to the issue at hand.

I don't know how I make this connection but the "judge" who is suing the Korean cleaners in Washington, D.C. happens, if I am not mistaken, to be black. Now, imagine the "outrage" that would be expressed if a white "judge" had the audacity to sue a working minority family business for such outrageous "damages." Sharpton would be there in a heartbeat to defend the "little working man" and his "family business."

This double-standard thing is starting to wear, at least with me, a little thin.

Cheers,

Ron Albright

Very well said! There are some excellent alternative sources for those that demand a true education. Bypass these Liberal propaganda factories!

And even more important is for parents to override the primary public schools. There the Liberal/communist are doing the most damage as they take advantage of a child's young and growing mind.

Speaking of being Nifonged...
Nifong has been a prosecuter here in Durham for many, many years. I wonder how many inmates are rotting in prisons who have been Nifonged? Should all of his convictions now be revisited by the courts? Will any of them be revisited? Are you kidding? The cost would be prohibitive and the resulting lawsuits against the city would probably bankrupt it. True justice will only be done when Nifong gets his sweet cheeks sent to prison. I wonder how he and Bubba will get along?

Re: Be patient. I agree to all youve said with one exception. No one can "make" A liberal look like a fool. They do that all on their own.

Bashing Nifong and Duke and Duke"s 88
Dear Dr. Sowell and others,
Thank you for another great column and comments.
Kindly note however that everyone is focused on this case because the national press got involved.

After the disbarment session on Saturday, the winning defense lawyers gave their speechs and also recalled to all those who were still listening that in very recent times eight (8) North Carolina prisoners on death row were released from prison after new trials because the defense attorneys, during the appeal process, were finally able to look at all the evidence.

There were no meaningful sanctions given by the North Carolina Bar Association to those eight prosecuting attorneys. Hopefully justice will begin to be served.

Jersey Devil

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Let "to nifong" enter the lexicon forthwith!

Athletes, Duke settle
Breaking news:
The athletes have settled with Duke. Under the terms of the agreement, all faculty are released from any liability.

Cleaning the house
Duke University needs to summarily fire its President Butthead who was quick to spew racist/sexist hate blaming white men. In addition the "Hate 88" who published libelous hate lies about the white men, blaming all white men. For their libel they should all be sued for every dime they own. And Duke University needs to clean up its act by firing the bunch of them. Racist, sexist hate does not belong on campus of any university. Duke University stands in disgrace until it is cleaned up. No white man, and no man at all really should attend Duke. It is a racist, sexist disgrace.

Jackson and Sharpton are racist hate mongers too. This case publicly demonstrated their racism.

And, of course as a leader of leftist hate, the NY Times has been a disgrace to journalism for decades. Only a fool of a racist/sexist bigot would even be reading it. It's not worth fish wrap.

Thomas Sowell
The nice prospect about the professors' abuse of others is that they are doing themselves in. Their arroance, lack of production, detachment from reality adn irresponsibility will soon be addressed by the market. A better education is available on-line than that taught at Duke by these egomaniacs, and at a small portion of the cost. Today's college costs are unsustainable, as is the professors' desire to graduate students with a mountain of debt. That is no way to enter the work force and will captivate many graduates. But the arrogant profesors don't have a clue that they are doing themselves in also.

Go to the community colleges. Go on-line. Save the money and get a real education istead of the garbage the "great" instituions are handing out and requiring that you regurgitate in order to get a good grade. Okay, you get a good grade, but you won't be prepared for the real world. It will take years, if it can be done at all, to reverse the propoganda pumped into you by the leftist professors.

Higher education is not what it used to be, except in price.

Remember "Borking"?
To bork and borking came into our lexicon due to the treatment of an eminent jurist by political elites (MSM and Ted Kennedy, for two). Now to help remember how elected officials and self-described political leaders can mis-use their position of responsibilty (which should be first) and power (which is usually first)let's add nifong to our lexicon. It can be defined as using your position in government to illegally and immorally persecute someone via false accusation in order to enhance their own power. To be a nifong is to be phony, lying, self serving, political animal suitable for euthanasia. To be nifonged is to be falsely accused with every one of the elites piling on.

Immediate candidates for the "top nifong of the day" are Al Sharpton (Steven Pagonas - victim - Tawana Brawley scam), John Kerry (American solders - victim - Vietnam smear) and Jesse Jackson (who can keep track? It's his M.O.)

And of course the Duke 88 nifongers - nameless liars piling on to suit their political and social(ist) agenda.

88 at Duke
Does anyone have a list of these "professors"? (Professors of ignorance, actually.) I suggest we start a writing campaign to each and every one of them with copies to the president of duke.

These people should be digging ditches, not teaching their filth to students.

I think they should at least lose their tenure and face lawsuits for slander and libel. Let's change Duke from a second class liberal school to a first class university.

NO MORE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR NEGROES.

Be patient
Soon enough, the Leftists will descend on this thread, and we will get to hear Dr. Sowell called "Uncle Tom" and all those other wonderfully "tolerant" names that tolerant Leftists like to hurl against us intolerant conservative swine.

Best I can tell, it seems to be the position of the Left that no black man, anywhere, ever, has any right to criticize the fruits of the Civil Rights movement. It seems to be a sort of "dance with the one what brung ya" sort of attitude, to the nth degree, combined with a perverse need of those on the Left to scream down those who make them look like fools.

God, I love the Left...

A superb column . . .
All of your columns, Dr. Sowell, are on target. This one hits the bullseye dead center. The politically correct crowd on the left that dominate the Democrat party -- and the Mainstream Media that carry their mail -- claim to support free speech and diversity. Interpret that to mean: "our kind of speech and our kind of diversity." No wonder they literally hate the Fox Network. No wonder the Democrats won't debate on the Fox Network. They only want softball questions that come from minds that agree.

I am an optimist....yet I wonder if America will ever wake up and realize that God is being pushed to the periphery . . . and traditional values are being replaced by socialist ideas and secularist philosophy.

Nifong et al
This trial and all those responsible for allowing the indictment of the Duke LaCrosse players and the aftermath of gathering race baiters, racists, howling news media, insane Duke professors, president of Duke U. and the malicious citizens of Durham, NC are the fruits of the sixties...should be brought to trial.

All the hippies, beatniks, rich and pseudo rich college kids took over the colleges and universities during that time graduate?, wrote the books and now teach their Marx/Lenin garbage that's been poisoning the minds our children since the sixties.

Whether justice would prevail or not, at the very least, they would get the notoriety they crave so much but not the kind they desire. They
should be brought to court and tried. Perhaps Fox News would cover the story.

Surely the state of NC has an attorney or two who would enjoy taking this ilk to court. I hope the trial would not go before the same judge as Nifong had.

Ahhhh, Dr. Sowell
Dr. Sowell, excellent column. Unfinished business, indeed. I'd like to see some lawsuits directed at the university and the faculty; it would be gratifying to see those loudmouthed wannabe intellectuals from the "women's studies" and "African-American studies" departments have to lawyer up and spend the better part of their retirement savings defending themselves from libel, slander, and defamation charges. Then to see them guilty and having to pay through the nose would be the best part! I'm not sure it will happen, but we'll see.

do the other students
have a case for a class action suit, as the 88 professors have devalued a degree from Duke? How about other recent grads whose sheepskin is probably their most valuable possession as they look to join the working world?

I'd like to see...
I would like to see the three young men, men who I should say acquitted themselves much better than the institution that was allegedly teaching them, file a huge (I'm talking $880 million or more) suit against those 88 professors. I'm quite convinced they are guilty of libel.

and...
Nifong forgot how to uphold the rule of law along with all the other turkeys at Duke...for power and politics. He damm sure should have cried on that stand as he resigned. Is he sorry? Not yet. And the lives he ruined...for a taste of power. How's that working for you,Nifong? My gramp used to say,"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive."

Start naming names
Don't give those 88 professors the satisfaction of calling them "The [Hippie] 88" -- they crave the thrill of the Herd that they feel when they say The Chicago Seven, that leftover thrill of the Sixties when The Herd they belonged to was listened to even if all they said was written by others and only screamed by them.

Start naming them and telling people who they are and what they stand for. Individually. There is nothing these people fear more than being singled out by name. All their lives they have depended on the safety of the Herd, and they long for a catchy name for that Herd that will prevent them from being singled out.

Time to start singling them out and following them around. This is the way to stop the next Herd from rushing anybody to judgment: make them understand that the Herd may commit the crime, but each criminal dies alone.

Much more dangerous
...than the single craven prosecutor, Nifong, are the 88 faculty members who whipped up sentiment.

In the 1850s, The philosopher Hegel's ideas that "the State is everything" took root in the universities of Germany. Those roots spread their tendrils throughout society as the political correctness of the times. By the time Hitler came along, that political correctness created a warm welcome for him.

Hegel's Zeitgeist was a role fulfilled by Hitler.

What will our Zeitgeist be?

The most powerful force is an idea. With an educated and thinking public, the idea is sifted and evaluated. In a non-thinking, politically correct driven public, it is accepted as an opiate.

Why do I fear for this country? Just look around and ask yourself how many would rather follow the emotion-driven than think and you'll shudder.

Worse than the thought...
...that such types are dominant in the universities is that they're equally dominant in grammar and high schools, where their charges have less perspective and less capacity to think for themselves.

Gramsci's "long march through the institutions" emphasized education and communications for a very good reason.

If this incident aftermath is..
...properly used by the conservative community, it could be the silver thread making up an hidden lining in this fiasco. It is up to those people complaining here and elsewhere to not let this die. If it becomes a rallying cry and is continually brought forward as a sordid example of PC politics as they truly are, maybe the suffering and vilifying of these young men will have been worth it.

Alas, however, I think all will long remember Nifong's name over the names' of the three victims of political correctness whose very lives have, in all probability, been destroyed.

Although the "system", legal or other, finally worked, the way the rest of the "systems" in this country work they will always have on their "records" an arrest for a major felony which must be proclaimed on virtually every job application and most other mandatory "paperwork" required in this country (that is, if the three want to be truthful in all aspects of their future lives).

This will, for them, never be over. So sad.
TBC :>(

Leftwing racists
The leftwing racists have been getting away with so much for so long that they've gotten bolder and bolder with their preposterous allegations. This time they went too far and it backfired on them. Too bad only the racists' stooge, Nifong, is being held accountable while the racists themselves, relatively unscathed, will just slither away and seek out more innocent white people to falsely accuse of crimes or to extort money from.

brick-by-brick

The undermining of our society proceeds brick-by-brick. The Nifong incident presents one of the more obvious dismantlings.

Is there any hope at all that the tottering edifice can be rebuilt?

Nifong should rot in prison
Not only should he be disbarred, but he should be thrown in prison. So too should the "victim".

The only rape that took place here was the raping of the three accused. Infact, their families were also "raped", the whole la crosse team was "raped", and the coach was "raped" as well.

Those boys should take the N.Y. Slimes, the accuser, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the 88 spineless, p.c. faculty members to court for all they have.

Just dreamin here. None of them will ever be held to any sort of a standard.
