A Gutless Lynch Mob

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?


Just before the Attorney General of North Carolina appeared on television to announce his decision on the Duke University "rape" case, one of the many expert TV legal commentators said that Attorney General Roy Cooper would probably use the words "insufficient evidence" but not the word "innocent" in dismissing the case.

As it turned out, the Attorney General did use the word "innocent," saying that he and his staff considered the accused students innocent. It was the only decent thing to do.

Anything less would have let the ugly accusation follow them for life and, years from now, when all the details of this sordid story have long since been forgotten, hang over their heads with a suspicion that they got off on some legal technicality.

What a difference a year makes. A year ago, there was a lynch mob atmosphere against the accused students -- from the Duke University campus to the national media, and including the local NAACP and the ever-present Jesse Jackson.

These were affluent white male students and a poor black woman accusing them of rape. For those steeped in the new sacred trinity of "race, class, and gender," what more did you need to know, in order to know which side to come out on?

Duke University suspended the students when charges were filed, cancelled the entire remaining schedule of the lacrosse team for which they played, and got rid of the coach. Former Princeton University president William Bowen -- a critic of college athletics -- and the head of the local NAACP were called in to issue a report, which complained that Duke had not acted fast enough.

Meanwhile, 88 members of the Duke faculty took out an ad in the campus newspaper denouncing racism. Among other things, the ad said, "what is apparent everyday now is the anger and fear of many students who know themselves to be objects of racism and sexism."

As for the demonstrations and threats loudly voiced by some local blacks, in the wake of the accusations against the Duke lacrosse students, the ad said:

"We're turning up the volume in a moment when the most vulnerable among us are being asked to quiet down while we wait. To the students speaking individually and to the protesters making collective noise, thank you for not waiting and for making yourself heard."

This year, after all the charges have collapsed like a house of cards, the campus lynch mob -- including Duke University president Richard H. Brodhead -- are backpedalling swiftly and washing their hands like Pontius Pilate.

They deny ever saying that the students were guilty. Of course not. They merely acted as if that was a foregone conclusion, while leaving themselves an escape hatch.

It is bad enough to be part of a lynch mob. It is worse to deny that you are part of a lynch mob, while standing there holding the rope in your hands.

What is even more important than clearing the names of the three young men charged with a heinous crime is making sure that the man responsible for this travesty of justice -- District Attorney Michael Nifong -- pays the fullest price for what he did.

The state bar association investigating Nifong needs to understand that this case is much bigger than Nifong.

If prosecutors can drag people through the mud and keep felony charges hanging over their heads, long after all the evidence says the opposite of what they were charged with, then any of us, anywhere, can be put through a living hell whenever it suits the whim or the political agenda of a district attorney.

Much was made of the fact that these Duke students came from affluent families. Lucky for them -- and for all of us. Not everyone has an extra million dollars lying around to fight off false accusations. Their fight is our fight.

This case will send a message, one way or another, to prosecutors across the length and breadth of this country. Either you can get away with dragging people through hell without a speck of evidence -- and in defiance of other evidence -- or you can't.

This case has already sent a message about the kinds of gutless lemmings on our academic campuses, including our most prestigious institutions.

Confound it - I was going to repose quietly unnoticed in the shadows as this argument marched by, until a pit bull comment (out of place in this parade) wandered over to the curb and bit my knee...

John, every argument you cited in response to Gabby dealt exclusively with LEGAL immigration. Problem is, that is not the subject her post dealt with.

She was not advocating "interference by government in the relations between labor and capital", but rather the "interference by government in the relations between the law and the lawbreakers" (which in this case includes both labor AND capital)

She was not advocating "having the government set tougher immigration limits". She WAS advocating the Government enforce the laws which currently stand as the law of the land. ("Immigration limits" is an argument for debating the current LEGAL immigration policy. I know, it's confusing).


Concerning your confusion on "what business the government has choosing which immigrants to let in and which to keep out based on political views." John, the very nature of all government is political, and who we let in to the country is one of the few areas of purvue allotted to the government by our Constitution.

But again, this is a debate concerning LEGAL immigration. When it comes to illegal immigration, the law doesn't make any distinction; that is why it is called ILLEGAL.

I know, this is confusing. I'm glad I could help.

Avoiding problematic situations
People, our mothers were right. If we avoid morally troublesome situations we are a lot less likely to have problems both legally and morally. Kudos to Disciple of Christ/Crossbearer. It is well said that "the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 NIV
It appears that many feel guilty and convicted by DOC/C's use of scripture but I believe he is dead on. I also am tired of the misuse of the "judge not lest you be judged" phrase. If you carried this to its logical conclusion there could be no judgement or discernment either morally or legally because no one is without sin or fault.
Again my advice to all young people in college is to avoid questionable situations and you will drastically reduce the chances of finding yourself in a situation like the Duke lacrosse players.

While I personally would not have used the same style as disciple of Christ is using, I have to say that he is correctly using the Biblical passages. These young men were participating in behavior that is sinful and therefore leads to people getting hurt. The fact that they were unjustly accused does not mean that they should be held up as model citizens. For those of you who do not like "religious" comments on this site, I have a couple of questions for you. From what source of wisdom do you get your morals? How do you come to your conclusions about what is right and wrong?

Christians do not see the Biblical moral codes as some arbitrary rules thought up by an arbitrary deity. We view the rules as guidelines and boundaries for the best possible life. They were given to us by a God who loves us and understands the world and how it works better than us. Therefore, while some Christians may "judge" out of simple self-righteousness, many of us judge because we really would like to the best for others.

The passages on judging talk about having a judgmental attitude while not being willing to be examined yourself. I welcome examination, and if I fail to live up to Biblical standards than I hope someone cares enough about me to hold me accountable (judge me). I am not perfect, but I know that when I recognize my sin God does forgive me. If I fail to recognize my own sin I hope someone else will point it out so that I will not continue to hurt God, others, and myself. God wants to forgive people, but they have to repent first. By the way, if we don't repent, then the Bible says that God will judge.

This could be any of us
Those boys could have been any of us or our kids. They were lucky enough to have the resources to fight off the attack of a rogue prosecutor. How many poor and middle class people are being railroaded right now by Nifong wannabes throughout the country?

Media Coverage of False vs. Real Crime

I too believe that Channon and Chris deserve coverage that the media gave the fake rape case in Durham. I also say "please" and "thank you" and hold doors open for women along with other outdated practices. It won't happen.

The media have the world view that places blame for all the world's ills on white men. Those boys, they assume, must have raped the girl. They are rich white jocks at an elite southern college. She's a poor black single mother trying to feed her family. Nifong is Sir Lancelot.

The faculty at Duke deserves to be taken to task for their agenda driven rush to judgment, but they will not be. The Gang of 88 were mostly liberal arts staff. Interestingly, there were no Law prof on the list. Wonder why? The ethnic and women's studies departments will be whispering "something happened in that house," when nothing did.

Nifong's conduct was beyond outrageous.

I agree that Nifong should be 'hung' or the legal equivalent of it in this case. And, I particularly agree that the Duke faculty should be called to account, along with the media that fueled and enabled them.

But, before you get too carried away with "What needs to happen", I think I remember that the Duke lacrosse team and coach were already on notice and on probation for previous questionable behavior. I think prudent students who valued their team , their program and their coach's job and a prudent coach who valued his own job would have avoided a scene such as the party that spawned this entire event - at all cost.

While what the players did (the party) in no way excuses the behavior of Nifong, the witness, the faulty, the President, the media, Jesse Jackson et al, the fact remains, if these guys had used the good judgement that should accompany the intellect of a Duke student athlete, none of this would have ever gotten off the ground.

Why can't non-Christians (and many "feel-good" Christians) differentiate between a) someone who prays that sinful people will recognize their sinful nature and repent, and b) someone who is simply "casting stones" pretending as if they are better than someone else?

Did CrossBearer show anything but compassion for these young men? He asked that people pray for them and their victims, because, like ALL OF US, they need Christ as their savior to have eternal salvation.

I know people today as it was in the days that Jesus walked this earth in the flesh do not want to hear the words eternal hell, and that there is only ONE way to inherit eternal life in God’s kingdom, but the “Truth” is we all were born into sin and Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to be delivered from eternal damnation in hell.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and MANY there be which go in thereat:

John 3:17-18 “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”


I myself was lost and condemned to hell for eternity "But" Jesus Christ who died for “MY” sins and granted repentance to me enabling me to TRULY REPENT (turn from sin), and believe the gospel to the saving of my soul as I abide in Him and endure to the end.


I pray for all those on this forum and in the world that God open the eyes of your understanding, and grant you repentance also enabling you to truly turn from your sins, and believe the “true” gospel to the saving of your souls before it is too late in Jesus mighty name.

Dear Disciple of Christ
I seem to recall the book saying, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone"

Regardless of the "Moral" character of these students, and the mistakes they may have made;

KNOW THIS: It was not an "ERROR" that occured when the DA chose to use the case for political hay.

So, in the future, spare us the self-righteousness.

re: my own "Legal" lynching post
Just reported a few minutes ago: the Portage County jury saw through the maneuvering of the judge and prosecutor and found the defendant NOT GUILTY on all charges. Justice was served. Now the prosecutor has a problem: finding another jury that is unfamiliar with the case if he decides to retry the other defendant. The motion that they be tried together had been denied because the prosecutor hoped to dangle a lighter sentence as bait to turn one defendant against the other.


Lynch mob professors
I'm waiting to see the former accused Duke students file actions against President Fathead and all 88 professors who defamed them at the outset. Let them be sued for a million bucks apiece, and settle for half. That way, they will all lose their pensions, as they should. They should also lose their jobs, although that is unlikely.

What do I do for a living? Why, I'm a full time, tenured university professor myself. If I did not respect my students, I wouldn't deserve the job, either.

You raise an interesting point. A murder victim who was "perceived" to be gay might be considered a "hate" victim but if discovered to be straight afterward the term "hate crime" may be elastic enough to say no. Depends on who the prosecutor is, I guess.

Your mention of activists with conflicting agendas brings back an old memory of a "Lifeline" broadcast (early 60's) in which it was pointed out that activists think they are using government to get what they want but fail to realize that government is using them to get what IT wants -- dictatorial power -- and those activists are in for a nasty surprise. Along with the rest of us.

True justice
A blogger asked, after Bill Clinton was acquitted by the Senate, "Where does Paula Jones go now for her justice?" Eventually, she did receive a great measure of justice in that Clinotn was forced to make a financial out-of-court settlement and the public now generally agrees that yes, he probably did sexually harass her.

So now, in that same vein, where does the Duke Lacrosse Team go to be made whole again? Not just the three accused players, but the whole team. The ENTIRE TEAM lost an irreplaceable season. The coach lost his job. Where do these guys go now to get back all of benefits, fun, teamwork, competition, experience, growth, etc. that goes with participating in an NCAA team sport at the varsity level? Where does the coach go to get his next, equivalent job? Where does he go to get his reputation back?

Where do the families go to get reimbursed for the attorneys fees they paid to protect their sons from this totally unnecessary PC inquisition?

What has been done to discourage the next Nifong? The next gang of 88?

Is this not EXACTLY like the first "accomplishment" on Al Sharpton's resume; the Tawana Brawley fraud? And how was Sharpton held accountable for that and discouraged from doing it again? He was REWARDED with fame and respectability. He was given credibility he never would have had if he hadn't participated in that fraud.

So why does it surprise us that he, Nifong, the gang of 88, and all the rest pulled this stunt? And what makes us think the next time a black stripper cries rape at a group of rich white kids it won't be the same crap all over again?

What if the murderer *thinks* you're gay, but you're actually straight? Is it a "hate crime" then? What if the reverse happens? That's the problem with conservatives and liberals: both see the government as an instrument through which to enforce their own agenda, rather than using the government as it was intended by the Founding Fathers. Instead of using persuasion, they wish to use the power of government, which is the power of a gun; only the shopping lists are different.

No; law is NOT for enforcing morality; it is for protecting the rights of people against government and criminals. When attempts are made to legislate morality then the surest way to get people to do something is to tell them not to do it. Prohibition was one example and the relentless "war on drugs" with its trashing of civil rights is another.

As for "hate" crimes, at least with the double standard involved, the "hate crime" designation is intended to give special privilege to minorities that are denied to the rest of us. Think about it: is a murder victim any more "dead" because it was inspired by hate? NO! And the same is true of other violent crimes. Like it or not, the "hate crime" classification is intended to stir up a lynch mob mentality.

Which part of the "There's None Good" subject line on CrossBearer's post didn't you understand?

Being a true Christian is like being in rehab. We all fall short of what we should be. That doesn't mean we can't encourage others to be better - to repent of their sins. We also expect the same in return.

People commonly misunderstand "Judge not, lest ye be judged" - usually leaving out the second part, or ignoring it. What it means is that if you are going to judge others, be ready and prepared to be judged in return. If everyone refuses to be judgmental and point out other's shortcomings, there is no growth for anyone. If one is only willing to be the judger and not the judgee, they will experience no growth and will not be seen as a credible judge by others.

I thought his post was spot on. Reread it and ask yourself again - Is he being high-minded? Is he looking down on these young men? Does he think he is better than them? I think the answer to all of these question is NO.

While I agree with what you are trying to say, how you are saying it is not helping your case any. What he was trying to say was that...while the men were innocent of the crime, they put themselves in the situation to begin with (although there is proof that at least one of them wasn't even at the party that night -- if I remember correctly). If strippers had not been hired there would have been no opportunity for the accusations.

Just maybe the next frat party will think about the consequenses of their activities prior to scheduling the "entertainment..."

There is an even worse case in Portage County, OH. Two innocent men spent 16 years in prison before the OHSC threw out their convictions becaus they had incompetent counsel and exculpatory evidence was withheld. It turns out that the prosecutor in the initial case had a problem with his cocaine addiction (which he is in jail for) but the sitting prosecutor is bent on saving face -- with the connivance of the judge -- at all costs. During the retrial the defense scored a slam dunk as to how the killing happened so the judge ordered the jury to consider lesser charges that were never mentioned in the indictment. Portage County authorities have made no secret of their intent to suppress the truth regardless of the cost. It should have been a red flag when the person who actuall did the killing was the "star witness" in order to avoid the death penalty (and said that he would say anything for that purpose). Sort of like our own military bigwigs using an enemy officer as a "star witness" against one of our finest Naval officers; think about the USS Indianapolis in which the Captain was railroaded to cover up the communication failures by the top brass. But I digress.

Both men attempted to be tried together but that motion was denied; the second defendant will have the same defense team who will be hardened veterans when the next "trial" begins. The first action should be to file for change of venue because a fair trial is not possible in Portage Cty.

You don't know jack about the so-called "Jefferson Bible." Jefferson took great care to find the best koine (look it up) Greek texts of the gospels he could, and translated the four gospels with great care to accomplish his purpose--to portray Jesus as a great moral teacher but to strip the gospel stories of all miracles. If you knew anything about religious disputes of Jefferson's times, you'd know that the position that held that Jesus was not divine, but merely a great moral teacher (like Socrates--the usual comparison) was an identifying mark of someone who was not really a Christian. Like most political thinkers of his day, Jefferson took very seriously the notion that most people needed to believe in a religion in order to behave morally. He also thought that a population of persons with such beliefs was necessary for a government like that of the U.S. to function. This kind of thinking is quite old; it is not a sign of sincere Christianity. It is rather recognition of the political function of religion.

I don't believe that so-called "hate crimes" legislation is right. Infringing upon someone's individual liberties should be punished regardless of whether or not the victim belongs to a group favored by the government. Read the Declaration of Independence and tell me what IT says the purpose of government is. Read the Preamble to the Constitution and see what IT says the purpose of government is. Read the Federalist Papers. Tell me where, in any of that, the purpose of government or our Constitution is ever considered to favor one group over another under the law, to promote personal morality, or to promote any sort of "values", whether they be "Judeo-Christian", "traditional", "progressive", "family", or other.

Or, as Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Notes on the State of Virginia:

"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts as are injurious to others."

Note that the quote from Jefferson about Jesus that you mention goes along with what I said above: Jefferson valued the personal moral teachings of Jesus but did NOT believe in his Divinity.

For example, consider the following from a letter written by Jefferson explaining his exscission of the Bible to suit his needs:

"But while this syllabus is meant to place the character of Jesus in its true and high light, as no impostor Himself, but a great Reformer of the Hebrew code of religion, it is not to be understood that I am with Him in all His doctrines. I am a Materialist; he takes the side of Spiritualism; he preaches the efficacy of repentance towards forgiveness of sin; I require counterpoise of good works to redeem it, etc., etc. It is the innocence of His character, the purity and sublimity of His moral precepts, the eloquence of His inculcations, the beauty of the apologues in which He conveys them, that I so much admire ... Among the sayings and discourses imputed to Him by His biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others, again, of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same Being. I separate, therefore, the gold from the dross; restore to Him the former, and leave the latter to the stupidity of some, and roguery of others of His disciples. Deism in that age was based on human reason rather than revelation; Jefferson believed in the ethical teachers of Christ but did not believe in the supernatural aspects.

According to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation:
"Jefferson believed in the existence of a Supreme Being who was the creator and sustainer of the universe and the ultimate ground of being, but this was not the triune deity of orthodox Christianity. He also rejected the idea of the divinity of Christ..."

Yes the lacrosse players sinned as the Bible thumper accused...unfortunately that is what is to be expected from popular athletic guys in college. I don't judge them for that and I am glad they were exonerated. I'm a little disappointed that these guys weren't in Iraq or at least at a college offering an ROTC program which Duke does not...we are at war and healthy athletic intelligent males are needed in our combat arms and especially SpecOps groups as officers. Lacrosse is not exactly a professional sport so they're not giving anything up by military service except the chance to continue their indolent affluence. If Bush's nephew can serve so can a Reade Seligman.

If your son attends a co-ed college or university in the United States, and he is actively heterosexual, it is likely that a female student will falsely accuse him of rape. Does your son have any clue how to avoid such a nightmare, or that such a nightmare is even possible?

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 13 months, and didn’t hear about the fraudulent rape case at Duke University, you should be painfully aware of the danger your son faces. Because our society doesn’t value males, your son’s university will not protect him if he should, unfortunately, be the object of a female’s ire. In fact, his school will kick him under the bus. You should worry about that.
America’s institutes of higher learning are bastions of socialism and misandric feminism. Go to the Website of your son’s university. Do a search on “rape.” Pages and pages of information, right? Lots of help and programs for female students. Now, do a search on “false rape accusations.” What do you find? Nothing, I’ll bet. That’s because he attends a gynoversity.

Does your son’s educational establishment care about his welfare? Not at all. Men and boys are expendable, built for sacrifice. Your son’s school cares about girls and date-rape, not about boys being falsely accused of rape. Also, your son’s school has a zero-tolerance policy, which states that HER side of the rape story is the whole story. And, your son’s school allows girls to have consensual sex with him and then, up to two weeks later, decide that their consensual sex was rape. After all, women are allowed to change their minds.

And, by the way, when a girl admits to lying about her rape accusation, or if the evidence ultimately shows her to be a liar, what will be her punishment? Nothing. Slap on the wrist, maybe. Campus police and prosecutors will do nothing to her. She gets a pass. Starting to worry, now?

To reflect my concern about this nonsense, I have contacted athletic directors, football coaches, VPs of student affairs, presidents, and high-level directors of fraternity organizations at major universities around the USA. Responses? Zero. These execs are hiding under their desks — afraid of feminism, afraid of the misandric media.

On 60 Minutes last night, Leslie Stahl interviewed the three Duke lacrosse players just exonerated of felonious rape charges, as well as North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, the man who freed them. They all spoke eloquently and humbly. The most chilling part of the segment, however, was when Ms. Stahl showed a clip of women marching in the streets of Durham, at the case’s genesis, banging pots and screaming for the castration of the accused boys. No evidence. No facts. Only presumed guilt, desired guilt, and blind hunger for male destruction. I guess they were showing their nurturing sides.

A Convenient Lie
Why do girls and women feloniously accuse boys and men of rape? There are two levels of rationale. First, the legal climate permits and encourages it. The rape-shield laws, which hide the identities of rape accusers, are a joke. You’ll hear women justifying them by bemoaning the embarrassment of reporting rapes. Really? Where are they to express empathy for men humiliated on TV and cyberspace after being falsely accused of rape? You can fit them into the proverbial phone booth.
Second, the typical girl is raised not to take responsibility for her actions but to blame them on someone else. Accordingly, there are five common reasons she will make felonious rape accusations:
1. Shame: When she gets drunk or stoned, or both, and fornicates with guy she’d prefer not to be with, she awakens the next day feeling ashamed. Instead of blaming herself, learning a lesson, and moving forward with her life, she conveniently accuses the man of rape.
2. Goading: Her misandric girlfriends hear her sordid story and browbeat her into accusing the guy of rape. Or, one of them makes the call to the campus police. Why not?
3. Revenge: She becomes enraged when, after the tryst, he never calls her. So, to avenge his “faux pas,” she accuses him of rape.
4. Parental Alibi: She needs to explain to her parents why she is pregnant. So, by accusing her partner of rape, she’s off the hook for her promiscuity.
5. Boyfriend/Husband Alibi: She cheats on her boyfriend or husband. To explain her whereabouts, and/or the misplaced aroma of men’s cologne, she accuses her partner of rape.

The NoNonsense Bottom Line
Here’s what probably will happen when a co-ed accuses your son of rape. First, he will be presumed guilty and arrested. Second, the university will automatically suspend him from school, pending an investigation of indeterminate length. Third, if he is an athlete, his name and face will grace every TV, computer, and video-enabled cellphone in the world — it can happen in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, the school will protect the accuser with a big rape shield.

To help make your son safe at college, have him memorize these seven rules of survival:
1. Women have the majority of civil, reproductive, marital, divorce, child-custody, and child-support rights in America
2. Never go out or have sex with a vindictive girl who blames everyone else for her problems
3. Never have unprotected sex
4. Never have sex with a girl whom you don’t trust implicitly
5. Never have sex with a girl whose girlfriends you don’t trust
6. Never have sex with a girl who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs
7. Never have sex with a girl if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Yes, by following these rules, your son’s social life will be a bit curtailed but better than the alternative. The three Duke lacrosse players were presumed, and not proven, guilty. They had to prove their innocence — an anti-constitutional requirement — and, as a result, have legal bills estimated at $1 million each. Do you have that kind of money to save your son? If so, are you sure he can prevail in his state? In these matters, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.

The focus point is that they were ultimately innocent of the crimes that they were assaulted with. Which is very good for all of us who believe in justice. I am very glad that they were cleared of the crap. I do wish them the best in their futures.
I can also see some personal lessons that can be learned. When you engage in certain behaviors, you open yourself up to more potential problems. This is a practical lesson. A lot of people get offended when this is offered, they veiw it as a judgment.

The words Providence and Creator are not just Deistic terms. Many Christian preachers and theologian use those terms.

Every one of the accusers, from Sharpton/Jackson to Nifong to the 88 members of the Duke staff need to be called out in a highly public forum. It's pretty much established fact now that the accuser was untruthful about the rape she alleged. She told a number of conflicting stories, at least some of which had to be false.

I thought one of the tenets of the radical feminist rape dogma was that women do not, nay CANNOT untruthfully assert that a rape occurred! There are several historic documents that prove these men believed in Christ. There are several of George Washington's journals where he expressly calls on the Lord Jesus Christ to help him in difficult situations. There were solders who in their diaries say they heard him praying in the name of Jesus. So, you should research more.

Thomas Jefferson said this while they were debating (arguing) over the issues of the Constitution,

COOPER RUNNING FOR GIVER-NOR
Folks, the reason Cooper took over the case is that he intends to run for giver-nor and he needs this out of the way, having occurred under his watch. How do I know he is running for giver-nor, well he does the same thing Easley did, running soft TV commercials, like warning the elderly about phone scams and then saying, this is Roy Cooper Atty. General. It is merely taxpayer campaign financed image positioning and name recognition. I think he has run about 4 or 5 of these in the past 3 years. They each can run for weeks if not a month.

When the Nyfong thing came up, he needed to put it to rest so next year he can run. Being atty. It's not about justice anymore
They say that Lady Justice is blind and so she shows no favortism. By the handling of this case, I begin to doubt that she is truly blindfolded and hasn't been peeking some. This case has been handled poorly from the beginning starting with bungled evidence collecting to conflicting statements from eyewitnesses and victims which seemed to change weekly. Even the accused seemed to be hiding something and not be telling the complete truth. The media was quick to consider the accused guilty before even going to trial. The left lined up to lynch them throwing away due process in favor of emotionalism. I am not sure if the boys at Duke University are truly innocent of what transpired but we must find a way to remove politics from our court system and let justice be done as set up by our Founding Fathers.

I don’t think that Nifong will lose his licenses because if he does then DAs all over the country will have to be investigated for their prosecutions of innocent people. All DAs have done something illegal or unethical in their careers as attorneys. So, those who will be judging Nifong are the same people who have done similar or worse things and gotten away with it.

It is the people who will need to send the hardest message to Nifong and those on the Bar who will be judging him. This type of behavior must stop; it must stop with the attorneys and the judges as well.

Especially the "gutless lemmings" comment at the end. That's the perfect description of those 88 who signed the letter hanging those boys before the evidence was in. "Gutless lemmings". I like it.

Imus and Duke
Some people think the hysteria over Don Imus' tossed off remark about the RU girls basketball team heated blue-burn hot because the three white young men at Duke were being totally exonerated. The Left needed SOMETHING or SOMEONE, ANYONE, to lynch to soothe its mob-driven outrage at losing the Duke players as punching bags for the race-sex-gender "academics," some of whom have the intellect and knowledge of a fruit bowl. When you work with people with degrees in "ethnic studies" who don't know Abraham Lincoln wrote the "Gettysburg Address" or FDR smoked cigarettes and couldn't walk without braces and crutches or "colleagues" with degrees in "communications" who can't write a comprehensible memo, then you know what passes for academic instruction on the college level today. Even the original Duke letter misspelled "everyday" which means "ordinary" or "common" for "every day" which means "each day." People who issue manifestos and can't convey common usage correctly should keep their angers and neurotic tics to themselves.

All lynch mobs are gutless
When confronted forcefully, they turn tail and run. This is because they consist of (a) one or two loudmouths who are the self-anointed leaders and (b) a large number of weak-minded followers whom the self-anointed leaders whip up into a pseudo-righteous frenzy.

If the authorities, both in the state and at Duke, had exercised their proper oversight of the ones whipping up the frenzy- namely, Nifong and the University faculty- even with Jackson and Sharpton et al's meddling, this case would have been over with, and the charges dismissed, over a year ago.

IMPO, the rights of the former defendants were violated under the provisions of the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Tenth, and Fourteenth Amendments. It's not enough for Nifong and his like-minded facilitators to lose their jobs; they need to be prosecuted for violating the civil rights of the wrongfully accused young men. Preferably in Federal court.

If we take our Constitution seriously, we should settle for nothing less.

A Gutless Lynch Mob
My candidate for President – a man for all seasons: Thomas Sowell. He's the complete package (just check out his credentials, his productivity) -- not a huckster, not in anyone’s backpocket. He has covered the waterfront most ably for 30+ years (for me going back to his magnificent "Ethnic America". I've read it more than once and there was no way to hazard a guess as to his ethnicity. Example: He opined, in effect, that the potato famine Irish, on average, had it tougher than black slaves in America. What a tough comparison, but what even-handed judgment!

Granny always said
"Three of us know the truth, Missy. YOU know...I know...AND GOD KNOWS."

It didn't take long for the guilty to confess with those words hanging fire in the room.

For all those who wait in vain for the race baiters, warlords and New Black Panthers to say they were wrong; for those who expect the Duke 88 Marching Hippies to back down; for all those who still mutter that even if they didn't rape anybody, they're still brats...

REMEMBER that one day every one of us will stand before God. And what you know, and what I know, matter not at all when we stand before Him. HE KNOWS.

Pluck out that beam from your own eye and be sure that your own soul is prepared before you start finger-pointing and name-calling.

And in this case in Virginia -- don't rush to judgment before you have any information. Because all that will show is that you haven't learned anything at all.

How many Nifongs make a right?
In 1906, a young black man was accused of raping the daughter of a prominent white doctor. The daughter positively identified the accused. At the time, however, he was being presented to her not in a line up but alone. The primary witness for the prosecution was a reward-seeking miscreant. Witnesses placed the accused at a place and time that exonerated him. The jury hung on the charges and then, inexplicably, returned a verdict of guilty after a night off. Eventually, Ed Johnson was dragged from his cell and hung by a mob from a local bridge. His last words were:

"I am ready to die. But I never done it. I am going to tell the truth. I am not guilty. I have said all the time that I did not do it, and it is true. I was not there. I know I am going to die and I have no fear to die and I have no fear at all....God bless you all. I am innocent."


It has been a century since Johnson's murder yet we are still sacrificing justice at the altar of the mob.

What was their crime?
They were guilty of being white in a liberal university. The gang of 88 should have letters of reprimand entered in their files.

Nifong should get a 5 year visit with Bubba the inmate and have to pay legal fees for all of the students.

Jesse and Al should be tarred and feathered in the town square and forbidded from ever entering the Raliegh-Durham area again.

As bloggers on the Townhall column, we do not need religious nuts like Disciple of Christ/Crossbearer spreading slanted views, where even with the complete exonoration of the Duke Lacrosse Players, he or she went out of their way to find some way to further punish these innocent men. It is often said religion can be used to prove or disprove anything. The pitiful words of Disciple of Christ/Crossbearer was out of place in this blog and all right-thinking people should detest such responses.

Meanwhile, actual hate crime ignored
Thank you, Mr. Sowell, for this refreshing essay.

I'd like to call attention to an ACTUAL heinous race based hate crime that has been completely ignored by our media, though it is far more barbaric than even the Manson murders were. Google Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome, a young white couple who were carjacked and kidnapped by 5 black thugs with a long criminal history in January of this year in Knoxville, TN. Both were raped, tortured, mutiliated, humiliated (to say the least) and then murdered. According to reports, more than a dozen people came in and out of the drug house for two days observing the goings-on and not one of them tipped off the police. Some were even filming it on their cellphone cameras and laughing. They are now in custody and will stand trial, but meanwhile, where are Al and Jesse to decry this barbaric, savage race-hate crime? Where are the media? Have you ever even heard these two names before? I thought not. Wikipedia has a good synopsis of events. So far the only folks giving it any attention are the White Supremacists (great, just what we need, more hate mongrels). But I believe this is largely because no one outside of Tennessee even knows about this story!

I wish the media would stop running to Al and Jesse every time they need a "black leader" to comment on the evils of Whitey. I wish responsible and moral black citizens would rise up and denounce Al and Jesse as the sinful, race mongering bottom feeders that they are and declare once and for all that these losers do not speak for the entire black community. I wish we didn't have to hear ad nauseum about stupid Imus and his rapper-inspired comment, or about three white boys and a rape that never happened.

By the way, while I am glad justice prevailed for the three Duke boys, I agree with other commenters that their decision to hire strippers and prostitutes for entertainment reflects very badly on their moral character. They are not exactly fine, upstanding young men, but I guess that's beside the point.

I urge everyone to learn about Channon and Christopher and then write the major media outlets and ask them why they are not covering this story.

Nifong should not only be disbarred but prosecuted and jailed! The city and the University should be held accountable. Perhaps sued and made to pay all Court costs and a huge fine. Of course the race-baiter's $harpton and Jack$on will skate. Then go off looking for their next victim.

There's None Good

The case and charges against the Duke Lacrosse young men seem to have been bought in error, but a lot of people are getting carried away with calling these young men good, upstanding citizens, hero’s and role models.


They were having a drunken party with strippers. According to the word of God they were committing sin against God: drunkenness, fornication, and reveling. Jesus said “That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.


1Corinthians 6:9-10: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.


It is a good thing that if these young men did not commit a crime against the young lady they will not be prosecuted and spend 30 years incarcerated.


The tragedy is out of all of the speeches I have heard from these young men not once did I hear mention of repentance (turning from sin) toward God for sinning against Him which leads to salvation of the soul. Jesus said: I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.


Without true repentance and faith towards God. These young men will spend eternity in hell fire, which is much worst then 30years in prison. I pray that someone tell them that they need to repent (turn from sin) and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. Be a doer of the word of God and not a hearer only.


I also pray that the young ladies involved in this case repent, believe the gospel and be saved in Jesus mighty name.

What needs to happen
is the student body of Duke needs to stand up and demand a) that the 88 faculty offer an apology and admit that they did not presume innocence, b) that the president offer an apology, and c) that the former Duke lacrosse coach, who was essentially forced to resign over this debacle, get a nice fat paycheck since he lost his job over this whole thing. Sadly, none of these things will happen because to admit you are wrong means you have to admit that others who opposed you were right, and the kind of people that would jump on this bandwagon without waiting for the evidence are the same kind of people that cannot bear to see the day when those that disagree with them are proven correct.

I hope that the American media and the sanctimonious leftist academics learn from this, and that we can usher in a new era where we wait until the legal system has been given a chance to work before condemning or pardoning anyone accused of a crime. I have heard people say that the presumption of innocence only holds in a court of law and not in the media, but I ask: shouldn't it hold in the media too?

CC, I saw that interview too. I thought Sharpton was going to pop an artery and his speech got so slurred trying to finagle his way out of answering it was almost comical, except for the fact that I couldn't get past the gag reflex at his despicable behavior.

There is a new

word in the slang dictionary, Nifong. To be Nifonged is to be accused and raked thru the mud without any credible evidence.

If the NC Bar does not throw him out, we all need look over our shoulders, as this will set a precedent of injustice.

Where is the Mass Apology of the 88? Why haven't some of them been fired? Or censured, at the least? Do I need to color the picture to be able to answer the question?

For anyone to defend Mike Nifong's statements about this case would be like defending David Irving's statements about the Holocaust.

Sadly, there was a message on a MySpace rape support group which criticized the attorney general's decision (and the poster thought the attorney general was Alberto Gonzalez). That would be very much like someone on a MySpace Holocaust survivors' group defending the statements of David Irving.

"Their fight is Our fight."
Is it any wonder the libs got imus on the front page at the same time of this conclusion. No conspiracy. Just saying.

Not going to happen
They've all just about said they are not going to apologize. Chris Wallace was trying to get Sharpton to answer the simple question "are you now going to apologize?" Of course, he went into his verbal footwork and didn't answer.

He never apologized just as he never apologized for his disgraceful participation in the Tawana Brawley lie.
