A Gutless Lynch Mob

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

It is bad enough to be part of a lynch mob. It is worse to deny that you are part of a lynch mob, while standing there holding the rope in your hands.

What is even more important than clearing the names of the three young men charged with a heinous crime is making sure that the man responsible for this travesty of justice -- District Attorney Michael Nifong -- pays the fullest price for what he did.

The state bar association investigating Nifong needs to understand that this case is much bigger than Nifong.

If prosecutors can drag people through the mud and keep felony charges hanging over their heads, long after all the evidence says the opposite of what they were charged with, then any of us, anywhere, can be put through a living hell whenever it suits the whim or the political agenda of a district attorney.

Much was made of the fact that these Duke students came from affluent families. Lucky for them -- and for all of us. Not everyone has an extra million dollars lying around to fight off false accusations. Their fight is our fight.

This case will send a message, one way or another, to prosecutors across the length and breadth of this country. Either you can get away with dragging people through hell without a speck of evidence -- and in defiance of other evidence -- or you can't.

This case has already sent a message about the kinds of gutless lemmings on our academic campuses, including our most prestigious institutions.

John Galt on Immigration
Confound it - I was going to repose quietly unnoticed in the shadows as this argument marched by, until a pit bull comment (out of place in this parade) wandered over to the curb and bit my knee...

John Galt wrote:

"Gabby...it sounds from your post as if you're advocating MORE "interference by government in the relations between labor and capital" by having the government set tougher immigration limits that are below the market demand for immigrant laborers. I'm also not sure what business the government has choosing which immigrants to let in and which to keep out based on political views, which you also seem to at least suggest if not outright advocate."

John, every argument you cited in response to Gabby dealt exclusively with LEGAL immigration. Problem is, that is not the subject her post dealt with.

She was not advocating "interference by government in the relations between labor and capital", but rather the "interference by government in the relations between the law and the lawbreakers" (which in this case includes both labor AND capital)

She was not advocating "having the government set tougher immigration limits". She WAS advocating the Government enforce the laws which currently stand as the law of the land. ("Immigration limits" is an argument for debating the current LEGAL immigration policy. I know, it's confusing).

Concerning your confusion on "what business the government has choosing which immigrants to let in and which to keep out based on political views." John, the very nature of all government is political, and who we let in to the country is one of the few areas of purvue allotted to the government by our Constitution.

But again, this is a debate concerning LEGAL immigration. When it comes to illegal immigration, the law doesn't make any distinction; that is why it is called ILLEGAL.

I know, this is confusing. I'm glad I could help.

Avoiding problematic situations
People, our mothers were right. If we avoid morally troublesome situations we are a lot less likely to have problems both legally and morally. Kudos to Disciple of Christ/Crossbearer. It is well said that "the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 NIV
It appears that many feel guilty and convicted by DOC/C's use of scripture but I believe he is dead on. I also am tired of the misuse of the "judge not lest you be judged" phrase. If you carried this to its logical conclusion there could be no judgement or discernment either morally or legally because no one is without sin or fault.
Again my advice to all young people in college is to avoid questionable situations and you will drastically reduce the chances of finding yourself in a situation like the Duke lacrosse players.
