With unemployment at 10.2%, what will happen by the end of Obama's first term?

Just before the Attorney General of North Carolina appeared on television to announce his decision on the Duke University "rape" case, one of the many expert TV legal commentators said that Attorney General Roy Cooper would probably use the words "insufficient evidence" but not the word "innocent" in dismissing the case.

As it turned out, the Attorney General did use the word "innocent," saying that he and his staff considered the accused students innocent. It was the only decent thing to do.

Anything less would have let the ugly accusation follow them for life and, years from now, when all the details of this sordid story have long since been forgotten, hang over their heads with a suspicion that they got off on some legal technicality.

What a difference a year makes. A year ago, there was a lynch mob atmosphere against the accused students -- from the Duke University campus to the national media, and including the local NAACP and the ever-present Jesse Jackson.

These were affluent white male students and a poor black woman accusing them of rape. For those steeped in the new sacred trinity of "race, class, and gender," what more did you need to know, in order to know which side to come out on?

Duke University suspended the students when charges were filed, cancelled the entire remaining schedule of the lacrosse team for which they played, and got rid of the coach. Former Princeton University president William Bowen -- a critic of college athletics -- and the head of the local NAACP were called in to issue a report, which complained that Duke had not acted fast enough.

Meanwhile, 88 members of the Duke faculty took out an ad in the campus newspaper denouncing racism. Among other things, the ad said, "what is apparent everyday now is the anger and fear of many students who know themselves to be objects of racism and sexism."

As for the demonstrations and threats loudly voiced by some local blacks, in the wake of the accusations against the Duke lacrosse students, the ad said:

"We're turning up the volume in a moment when the most vulnerable among us are being asked to quiet down while we wait. To the students speaking individually and to the protesters making collective noise, thank you for not waiting and for making yourself heard."

This year, after all the charges have collapsed like a house of cards, the campus lynch mob -- including Duke University president Richard H. Brodhead -- are backpedalling swiftly and washing their hands like Pontius Pilate.

They deny ever saying that the students were guilty. Of course not. They merely acted as if that was a foregone conclusion, while leaving themselves an escape hatch. Continued...

John Galt on Immigration
Confound it - I was going to repose quietly unnoticed in the shadows as this argument marched by, until a pit bull comment (out of place in this parade) wandered over to the curb and bit my knee...

John Galt wrote:

"Gabby...it sounds from your post as if you're advocating MORE "interference by government in the relations between labor and capital" by having the government set tougher immigration limits that are below the market demand for immigrant laborers. I'm also not sure what business the government has choosing which immigrants to let in and which to keep out based on political views, which you also seem to at least suggest if not outright advocate."

John, every argument you cited in response to Gabby dealt exclusively with LEGAL immigration. Problem is, that is not the subject her post dealt with.

She was not advocating "interference by government in the relations between labor and capital", but rather the "interference by government in the relations between the law and the lawbreakers" (which in this case includes both labor AND capital)

She was not advocating "having the government set tougher immigration limits". She WAS advocating the Government enforce the laws which currently stand as the law of the land. ("Immigration limits" is an argument for debating the current LEGAL immigration policy. I know, it's confusing).

Concerning your confusion on "what business the government has choosing which immigrants to let in and which to keep out based on political views." John, the very nature of all government is political, and who we let in to the country is one of the few areas of purvue allotted to the government by our Constitution.

But again, this is a debate concerning LEGAL immigration. When it comes to illegal immigration, the law doesn't make any distinction; that is why it is called ILLEGAL.

I know, this is confusing. I'm glad I could help.

Avoiding problematic situations
People, our mothers were right. If we avoid morally troublesome situations we are a lot less likely to have problems both legally and morally. Kudos to Disciple of Christ/Crossbearer. It is well said that "the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 NIV
It appears that many feel guilty and convicted by DOC/C's use of scripture but I believe he is dead on. I also am tired of the misuse of the "judge not lest you be judged" phrase. If you carried this to its logical conclusion there could be no judgement or discernment either morally or legally because no one is without sin or fault.
Again my advice to all young people in college is to avoid questionable situations and you will drastically reduce the chances of finding yourself in a situation like the Duke lacrosse players.
