Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

One of the dangers in being a demagogue is that some of your own supporters -- those who take you literally -- can turn against you when you start letting your actions be influenced by realities, instead of following the logic of your ringing rhetoric.

That is what seems to be happening to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other liberal Democrats in Congress.

Anti-war protesters in Washington and outside her home in San Francisco are denouncing Pelosi and other Congressional Democrats for not cutting off the money to fight the war in Iraq.

If the war in Iraq is such an unnecessary and futile expenditure of blood and treasure as Pelosi et al. have been saying, why not put an end to it?

But to do that would mean taking responsibility for the consequences -- and those consequences would be disastrous and lasting. They would probably still be lasting when the 2008 elections come around.

The Democrats cannot risk that. They have taken over Congress by a very clever and very disciplined strategy of constantly criticizing the Republicans, without taking the risk of presenting an alternative for whose results they can be held responsible.

There is no sign that they want to change that politically winning strategy now. Their non-binding resolutions against the war are a perfect expression of that strategy.

These resolutions put them on record as being against the war without taking the responsibility for ending it.

Unfortunately for the Congressional Democrats, their left-wing supporters have taken the anti-war rhetoric of Pelosi, Murtha, et al., at face value and consider it a betrayal that they talk the talk but will not walk the walk.

It has been painfully clear that Speaker Pelosi was serious only about scoring political points. Her big grin when she won a narrow vote for a non-binding resolution was grotesque against the background of a life-and-death issue.

You don't grin over a political ploy that you have pulled when men's lives are at stake.

It is not just Congressional politicians who are so preoccupied with scoring points against the administration that they show no sign of concern for what the actual consequences of their words or actions will be for troops in the field, nations in the Middle East, or the global war on terror.

Much of the media is similarly caught up in scoring points on Iraq. For example, the cover of the March 18th issue of the New York Times magazine section featured a story about women in the military who said that they had been raped in Iraq.

A week later, they had to print a correction, after discovering that one of these women had not even been to Iraq. But any unsubstantiated charge against the American military rates headline coverage, even if there is no space for anything positive in Iraq.

There is apparently no space even to assess the extent to which the increase of American troop strength in Iraq has reduced the deaths of our troops from terrorist attacks. Nor is there apparently much space to discuss the implications of the return of Iraqis from the less violent provinces to their homes in Baghdad.

Indeed, there has apparently never been any space to discuss the fact that most provinces in Iraq have not had the levels of violence featured day in and day out in the media.

The demagoguery of the Democrats has already put them in the position where a successful conclusion of the Iraq war before the 2008 elections can be a political disaster for them.

If the recent increase in the number of troops in Iraq, and their freer hand in dealing with the terrorists there, reduces the level of violence enough to stabilize Iraq enough for American troops to start coming home before the 2008 elections, the Democrats will have lost their gamble.

Only an American defeat in Iraq can ensure the Democrats' political victory next year. Their only strategy is to sabotage the chances for a military victory in Iraq without being held responsible for a defeat.

That is the corner that they have painted themselves into with their demagoguery that even their own supporters see through.

Libs
They put all their eggs in one basket. The troop surge appears to be working, they just shot themselves in the a*s.

Libs -
Apparently there is no war or cause worth actually fighting for, and winning should be verbotten. Hence the ardent desire to run for the losing side and doing all to assure that the US Military will be on the losing side.

Another thing the newspapers never print
As Dr. Sowell points out, there is always room in the papers for bad news about Iraq or the American military, never any room to report progress in Iraq or the dedication and courage of the troops. But have you also noticed there is always room to print a poll showing President Bush's low standing in the polls, but never any room to show popular support for Congress or the Congressional leaders (Pelosi and Reid)? Or of the American public's regard for journalists and the mass media.

Americans
The democrats shame this entire country. It is too much to wish for but as I go to sleep every night I pray that in the next election voters will replace Pelosi and every representative in the Congress that would follow her with Americans.

Dangerous
Democraps indeed. They will stop at nothing, there is no level too low for them to stoop to make sure this war is lost.

There is nothing they will not do to make sure no conservative is ever elected again. That's what they think anyway, but they are going to be sorely mistaken about this in due time.

Shameless plug:
I have a new series on my blog, Juliet Smith's Diary, Chapters I, II, and III.

I liked your comment about the newspapers not having any room to print good things about our troops. I agree and it is a stab in the back to our soldiers.

GunnyG always has some good stories about the troops on his blog.

Irony
The Democrat party reeks with irony. As Dr. Sowell pointed out, a victory in Iraq 19 months from now will result in a political defeat for the Democrats.

The Democrats, who loudly profess to "support the troops", have passed legislation "ending the war" on August 31, 2008 (just in time for the election), but they had to spend a huge chunk of taxpayer dollars on pork to buy enough votes to minimally pass the bill.

If the Democrats will end the war on August 31 next year, why couldn't they end it THIS August? Or next Tuesday?

Pelosi's generalship may fool the effigy- burning Marxists in Oregon but the general public in this country will eventually get wise to her scams.

We threw out some of ours
during the last election- hence the new democrat majority. I wonder if Pelosi's failures will leave the moonbats cold and they in turn will stay home during the next election cycle? One can hope. The other hope being that Repulicans in office will grow a pair.

Excellent Dr. Sowell
As usual! And I had identical thoughts when I saw Peloski's grotesque smile upon winning the non-binding, no responsibility resolution. I believe the demolibs are without honor or moral fiber. They could truly care less about our men and women fighting this war. They are but a tool used to pursued votes in their favor.

Given the dumbed-down condition of our citizens. It does not surprise me that Liberal Moonbats back their every sickening move
like so many sheep marching to slaughter. One only has to read the Moonbats posting here to see this in action.

my 2 cents
Maybe it's just me but does anyone find the constant pictures of either murtha or pelosi or their ilk annoying as I do? The picture of big john accompanying this article is not one I needed to see and I cannot remember any article in the recent past that was accompanied by a picture of one of them that I felt was really relevant to the article itself.

iow - can you spare us pictures of thoose people?

Tanabear...
Someone Pi**ed in my wheaties this morning and you really need to STFU. You constantly bad-mouth anything to do with the current administration and you do blindly go with Pelosi and crew...how are you any different from those you stomp on with your "neo-con rants?"
Who signed the resolution and then fought to take all the funding from it while adding pork galore? HINT...not the "neo-cons!!!" So yo just keep goiing little blind mouse, while the democrats use the troops as pawns for political power...it'scoming back to bite them in the @ss...

Ah Dr. Sowell
You forget how duplicious the Dems and thir abetters in the MSM are. No lie is too big or too outrageous to consider not using it. If tomorrow the “surge” strategy resulting in ALL (that’s every GD one) of the insurgents and the Iranian backed fighters were all rounded up and killed and the casualty rate dropped to zero, the Democraps would still be claiming that we were losing.

The Democraps signed on the policy of the “big lie” a long time ago. Don’t forget that this strategy was perfected by the Dem’s favorite nation-state back in the 50s, the Soviet Unioun, who got it from Nazi Germany.

Tanabear,the one trick pony...
...Tanabear,as a favor to you I have I have typed a phrase below for you to cut and paste anytime you desire. It should save you a lot of typing:

THE NEOCONS ARE COMING!!! THE NEOCONS ARE COMING!!!

You're welcome.

The last gasp of the Sixties
The current congress is the last gasp of the Sixties ... the difference being that the people who were kicking and screaming in the street are now responsible for the consequences of any action that may be taken.

And unlike the massacres in Laos and Cambodia, which only came to light years after the Hippies had cleaned up and moved into real jobs, the consequences of Cut and Run will be on the air 24/7 in living colour -- and everybody will know whom to blame.

Risky behaviour doesn't even cover it at all.

youmakemepuke2
Thanks for the expose on your own rhetorical tactics.

"Ending" a war
Anyone who has ever participated in a war knows that there are only two ways to "end" it; win or lose. Either you defeat the enemy, by destroying him and his will to fight, or he destroys you and your will to fight, and you surrender. Anyone who talks about "ending" a war, rather than winning it, is woefully shor of experience in war.
Despite what they say about supporting the troops, being patriotic, loving their country or other similar statements, by their actions the Dems constantly indicate that they want our troops and our country to lose. That is similar to a person saying, "I am a great fan of the Red Sox, but I know that they cannot win games, and I don't want them to win."
Far too many Americans suffer from a deficiency of determination and patience. They expect everything to be resolved an a couple of hours, with commercial breaks scattered through that time. They think that anything that takes more than a month or so to complete is way too long and drawn out. This war for civillisation rather than babarism is going to take a long time to win. The reality is that you either want us to defeat the fanatic mohammadan murderers, or you want them to defeat us. The Dems, and self-styled "liberals" appear to have chosen our defeat as their goal.

Sad
I hope all of America wakes up soon. The dems pray that most Americans will only hear “Bush lied” and “the dems are trying to stop the fighting” and then switch over to American Idol or MTV. If the majority of this country ever starts truly paying attention the democrat party will be toast.

This latest ploy by the dems would make Benedict Arnold blush. Political power plays to maintain power have always been a part of American politics, but this goes way over the line. Passing legislation that you know will greatly harm your own country and could likely cause the death of many service members is reprehensible...doing it with a big sh*t-eating smile on your face is vile and repulsive.

youmakemehurl
Is there a liberal alive with an original thought in his head?

dems
I knew they would be stuck between a rock and a hard place once they seized the majority. They can't cut funding because they would be responsible, they can't urge a troop escalation because then they would take heat for that, although they have hinted at both. I hope people realize the only satisfactory solution to Iraq is to stabilize it and win.

tanbear......
....the word is "vary", not "very"! Also, what does the word "dealiest" mean?

It appears that your rants are becoming so inane in their automatic, liberal line parroting that even the verbiage is screwed up.

Why don't you lighten up a little, get your facts correct and approach this whole concept of war in a reasoned manner. Remember, spewing never trumps articulation.

TBC

Irony amond the dhemmigogues
The strange thing to me about some of the liberal posts I have read this morning is that they have actually used good examples of demogoguery, but have attributed them to the wrong side of the arguements. We have all seen that the MSM has notoriously covered for the Dems time and again. Ditto for these posters. Their arguements might make more sense if the Dems didn't keep trying to make up their own facts as well as points of arguement.

Thank you Moonbat Exterminator
For the inspiration and youmakemelaugh2 for the vehicle.

I could argue those same demagogue statements about Al Gore and his Church of Global Warming

You may title this:

He Played on Our Fears

1) "a demagogue as "one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." "

-Al Gore speaking to Hollywodd libs about global warming.

2)Apples and oranges — mixing of incomparable quantities.

Al Gore buying carbon credits (from himself) means he can use as much energy as a small village and it will have no impact on the local power grid because someone will plant a tree for him somewhere in Timbuktu.

3) Half-truth — making statements that are true only in a strict and relatively meaningless sense.

Al Gore--cars pollute, man drives car, man pollutes = manmade global warming, ban all combustion engines.

4) False authority — relying on the general authority of a person who is not proficient in the discussed topic.

Al Gore--Where did he get his Ph.D in climatology?

5) False dilemma — assuming that there are only two possible opinions on a given topic.

Al Gore--Either you agree with me and we do something right now (buy carbon credits, sign something like Kyoto, ban combustion engines)and save the world or you disagree with me, do nothing and allow manmade global warming to destroy the earth and kill our children in xx amount of years.

6) Demonization — identifying others as a mortal threat.

"Republicans in congress won't allow us to save the world from ourselves because all they want to do is drill for more oil. Which will cause us to buy more priuses and air conditioners that will contribute to the end of the world. They are demons."

7) Straw man — mischaracterizing the opposing position and then arguing against the mischaracterization.

Mischaracterized position: You are a global warming denier. How can you say global warming isn't happening, look at the data!"

True position: There may be global warming but we deny it being 'manmade'.

8) Loaded question — posing a question with an implied position that the opponent does not have.

Democratics and global warming hysterics question to G.W.Bush: "How many more old people do you want to die this summer from manmade global warming heat exhaustion before you agree with us?

Youmakemelaugh2, regarding demogoguery, I guess the pendulum swings both left and right.

youmakemelaugh
I think I've got your debate strategy figured out...let me give it a shot:

Moonbats rant and rant and rant.

Definition of a chair: –noun 1. a seat, esp. for one person, usually having four legs for support and a rest for the back and often having rests for the arms.
2. something that serves as a chair or supports like a chair: The two men clasped hands to make a chair for their injured companion.
3. a seat of office or authority.

Thank you again for demonstrating just how ignorant liberals can be.

youmakemelaugh =Loyal Democrat?
Are you trying to to be like loyal democrat? You have got to be. No one can make such an inane argument without trying to be that way on purpose.

I'd also like to thank Laugh2
For posting under an instantly recognizable handle that I can spot and scroll past, thereby avoiding your redundant/mindless drivel and venomous spume. Since you have unilaterally declared "the debate is over," why are you still here? Take your few remaining marbles and go away, please.

T-bare; you are slipping. You used to be occasionally interesting for letting us peek inside your tiny, hate filled brain, but you're becoming tedious and boring. How about some fresh material? Try smoking less of that stuff you're holding, it's way to strong. Or maybe drop some LSD and open your mind to some peace and love, man!

merry boy
That fact that you have no idea why we're in Iraq and no understanding of the consequences of "losing or winning" proves a point I made earlier on this thread.

Run back to The View, Sponge Bob, or whatever the he11 you normally watch....or better yet, pick up some history/educational books and learn a little on the topic you are trying to discuss.

You can start with: The Muslim Conquests, Modern Terrorism, and Islamic Fundamentalism....feel free to come back when you actually have a little knowledge.

Oh, the irony!
"Watch the Repubs Rant......
.........and rant and rant and rant.
Saying absolutely nothing, that means even less."

Hey, idiot, simply cut-and-pasting the same nonsense over and over again doesn't suddenly make it any less nonsense.

"Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs who should be arrested, exiled or hanged." - Abraham Lincoln.

President Lincoln, where are you when this country -- no, the entire world -- needs you?

Matthew
"First, we were there to get rid of WMDs, only there weren't any WMD's there to get rid of." Why do you believe that that was the only reason we were there? We went in there for many reasons, of which WMDs was only one.

"Put a firm date on when we're leaving, and our enemies in Iraq will be cut in half." As soon as we leave, Iran will be moving in.

"Many of the people who fight us simply do so because they see us as occupiers who won't leave if we're not attacked." This is just wishful thinking. I see no evidence that anyone there is doing it "simply" because of that. They have other motives as well, otherwise they wouldn't be attacking other Iraqis as well as Americans. And how many Kurds see us as occupiers?

Anyway, the day we aren't attacked is the day we can leave, so why would those who hate our "occupation" keep attacking us?

merry_go_boy, Your kidding right?
"I mean..what is there to win..?"

A stable prosperous democracy which in turn sets the standard in a region where that is rare. This then in turn cuts into the islamo facist recruiting, after all why blow myself or my kids up when I can have a good future for me and my family. Before they had (no hope = islamo facist) Now there is a possibility of hope only when we win will there be hope.

"I mean..what is there to win..?"

Well lets see, less people blowing up their kids to kill other kids. HMM what else, less people trying to commit mass murder i.e. 9/11 and don't forget what happen in England, Spain, Indonesia etc... A start for people to be able to live their lives in more freedom than they ever had before. Less mass grave sites being created to control the population is also pretty good I think. An example to other countries in the region that there is another way.

Honestly there is a lot more I could put but I think you get the idea. I am a vet of both Gulf Wars and I know from having to deploy repeatedly between the 2 wars (I retired after the second) If we don't win this one and pull out we will be forced back yet again and the cost in lives will dwarf anything going on now, because most likely then we will be forced to take on a more organized better funded enemy.

Dr. Sowell Fan
You write "So well" Dr. Sowell! Again, right on the mark and brilliant article. When will America wake up, or will it be too late? With voter fraud rampant in my state, I especially feel that I have no voice in America. People like Dr. Sowell give me hope.

Deja Vu All Over Again
They did it in the 70s. The most trusted man in America declared the Viet Nam war lost when we had just scored its greatest victory on the battlefield and the war that John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson took us into became Nixon's war. Again the press and the aging protesters now in positions of power are trying to lose a war. But the war they are losing is not Iraq, that is a battlefield where we are winning despite "Progressives" rooting for the enemy, again. The war they are losing is the war against Islamic fascists who would establish Sharia in all our towns. As Lenin pungently said 90 years ago, they are useful idiots.

Matthew - Why do we ignore our enemies?
"As far as winning and losing the Iraq war, how can leaving possibly be considered a loss? Saddam's going to come back to life? The Baathists are going to come back to power? C'mon."

Osama (not the candidate) Already answered your question. Simply put, when he saw us "leave" mogadishu, he new then they could beat us. He then used it to spur recruiting and operation such as 9/11. Whether or not you agree with his assessment is irrelevant, that is what they believe and successfully used.

We can afford no doubt this time.
The time to debate whether or not to go to war is long over. Leaving now only means they get to pick the time and place of our next war.

youmakemelaugh2
Do you have an original thought that you can articulate in a manner worth reading?

Duncan Hunter
Demagogues don't really want the problems they bemoan to be solved. All candidates in both "Major" parties are demagoging but one: Duncan Hunter. He has never been afraid, in public life, to face and try to fix problems. Now, certainly, after the nation has been nearly destroyed by Democratic idiocy and the Bush Leaguers' irresponsibility, we need a person like him. But there is no other. Dr. Sowell, I hope you will study the man and his record. MSNBC interviewed him yesterday at about 12;25 EDT.
Perhaps you, and others could retrieve and observe it. It was impressive

youmakemelaugh2
"Saying absolutely nothing, that means even less."

You are my hero... what genius it took to come up with that.

OH WAIT.. You didn't copy and paste that to did you?

If you did, someone else must be my hero then.

Youmakemelaugh
Yep, you sure do. When people on this site talk about sources, they're usually speaking of actual news sources, not the "Moonbat Times" and "Mother Jones" et al. You'll have to do better if you want to convince someone who has an opinion differing from your own. Of course, since we're "goose-stepping", "insane", "spew" believing demagogues, I think you should just give up on the "convincing" and go rant on one of the "source" sites you listed. I think their brand of intellectualism is more your speed.

youmakemelaugh2
Your nothing but a bot, I should of known, I'll waste no more time with you.

To Fletch
Fun guy, this youmakemekvell... Kinda reminds you of Konop, doesn't he?

Waitasec... do we know for sure that he *isn't* Konop?

After all, with the whole Leftie predilection for posting under multiple screen names... except for the fact that this guy hasn't mentioned that "controlcongress" site ONCE... they seem pretty similar!

Demagoguery? Where? Not on this site!
There is no demagoguery. Sowell, the administration, the right nor the left. Not a demagogue in the bunch. Yea right. Nothing but incompetent, self- righteous irrational hypocrites. That's it for me, no more reading Sowell, a true waste of time. His politics is as bad as his economics. Be careful folks, nothing but koolaid served here.

The best part
will be when the Republican party retakes the White House in 2008. It will be like the whole country squatting and taking a big, Portland-protester-style dump on this joker and his intellectual (I use the term loosely) brethren...

modernone
You obviously haven't the first clue about Sowell's economics; feel free to shrug him off, it merely illustrates your lack of intellectual heft. Sowell is probably one of the ten smartest economic thinkers in America, and the fact that you haven't the wits to see it says a lot more about you than it does about him.

NT TIMES MAGAZINE
Additional fact to add to Dr. Sowell's article :
The NY Times editors knew the story about the soldier who claimed she was raped in Iraq was False nearly a week in advance , but since it had already gone to print , they refused to re-print for monetary reasons.Or so they said. Then they waited a full week to print the correction.
Anyone that still subscribes to that rag is an IMBECILE !!!

youmakemepuke
... hey, aren't you the same joker that posted copied bits of other website into your comments here a few weeks ago as if they were your own words, then bolted like a scared bunny when you got caught?

I couldn't agree with you more; thank GOD we are Republicans! (not "Republican's", since the apostrophe-s is possessive, you dimwitted dolt) Even more importantly, thank GOD you're *not* Republican! It would give us a bad name.

I agree with most of Sowell's points
The democrats have painted themselves into a corner: if they buy their own rhetoric that the election results were about Iraq and appease the anti-war Marxist left, they lose their moderate constituencies. The vast majority of Americans want Iraq to be a successful endeavor; only the anti-war loonies want to see us fail there. And to withdraw before establishing a peaceful, functioning democracy that can help keep its neighbors (especially Iran) in check is failure.

However, I think Sowell’s original premise is flawed. The democrats did not win the last election; the incumbent republicans were fired for lack of performance, particularly fiscal responsibility. Federal spending on everything went up, and the good ol’ boy network was back to business as usual. Might as well have real democrats in place for that kind of behavior.

I predict that if the republicans remember what gave them the majority in the first place, the Contract with America, and swear to return to being a well disciplined, fiscally responsible governing body – not Santa Clause – they will reassume power.

However, they need to stick to fiscal matters – reducing taxes, cutting spending, reforming entitlement programs, and reducing the overall scope of government. If the republicans run on “Family Values” agendas, which to me are rooted in fundamentalist evangelical theology, they can count me - and I suspect other Libertarians - out. I’ll continue to vote Libertarian without remorse if the "Family Values" crowd winds up usurping the republicans' agenda.

Dear Furgus
Not enough space to debate Sowell's economics here but it is myopic. The mighty money printing press we use to prop up our misguided fiscal policies will be the ruin of our currently high standard of living. The longer we remain on this path, the worse the fall.

The rest of the world is starting to wake up to the paper tiger of the US economy and are starting to craft alternatives. It was fine when we led in innovation, production, diplomatic strength, a deep, powerful military, had credibility of leadership abroad and at home, enforced the law of our own land, and had pride in our position in the world. We are rapidly loosing all of the these and the printing press will soon be just that. Sowell's writing on this site is equally myopic.

Liberal and Progressives
Grow up.

How did the World stop the Natzi mass murderers?
How did the World stop the Communists murderers?
Answer: The World didn't. The U.S. did.

How did the World stop the Islamic murderers?
Answer: The World didn't.

The only Question that matters now is:
Will the U.S. stop the Islamic murderers before the death toll reaches 100s of millions?

If the U.S. had stopped Hilter or Stalin early on before they grew in power, 99 million lives and $ billions could have been spared.

So the only question for you liberals and progressives is when will you get on board?
Now before the unnecessary deaths of 100s of millions and $ billions of dollars is spent.

Bush is trying the old JFK liberal approach to stop the tyrants before they grow into a much bigger world threat with nuclear weapons.

Liberals and Progressives want to try Neville Chamberlin's appeasement strategy again.

Problem is the Muslim murderers are a bigger threat than both Natzis and Communists combined if you let if grow and metatisize.

Question for the Liberals
I'm interested in anything that one of the certified liberals has to say regarding the military strategy of announcing a future surrender date.

Do any of you dispute the asserssion that leaving prematurely would create a future security risk for the US?

Do any of you think President Bush will stay in Iraq a day longer than he thinks is prudent?

By the way, how long did it take to get everybody out of Kosovo?

Please, coherent answers only. No cowpies. No rants.

modurnone
You ape the comments of people much smarter than you very creditably.

Tell me, just out of curiosity: what's the role of prices in a free market economy?

modernone
you say: "The mighty money printing press we use to prop up our misguided fiscal policies will be the ruin of our currently high standard of living."

The results of that policy are easily observed by rampant inflation. Do you see that in the US?

As far as leading in innovation, without debating whether we still do or don't... is the US better off or worse off if the rest of the world becomes more innovative?

Liberally Predictable

Can't stand the heat directed at you and yours? Can't realistically defend your side? Why, simply accuse the accuser of doing the same thing, thereby changing the subject and redirecting the heat against your tormentor.

Ala tanabear and youmakemewonder2

And Yes, There ARE Republican Demeagogue

But the article wasn't about them. It was about Democrat-ick demogogues.

A chicken in every pot.
A car in every garage.
Free healthcare for all.
We must eliminate poverty.
Equal rights for wierdos, etc. etc. etc.

The Democrat-ick party has purchased and paid for defeat. They own it, let them have it.

To modernone
Judging from your post above and from your TH Blog you are a liberal democrat. How in the world does Town Hall allow democraps to post AND to give them access to start their own blog on TH?

Merry go Monkey
That was cute...thanks for the laugh, Monkey boy. You came, you spewed, now go back under your rock. You are all predictable. Spew, spew and spew. And, today, I had enough of that spew.

The current status of Iraq
Can be laid at the feet of liberals, and milquetoast moderates like Bush.

If we real conservatives had been running the war, the Iraqi theatre would be pacified. But we can't pacify it because you liberals won't shut up and let us beat the hell out of the Iraqis, disarm and enslave them, as we did with the Japanese after WWII.

The invasion *was* a cake-walk. We blew through them like crap through a goose. Then came the liberal, born-again Christian love thy enema crap, and hundreds of thousands of enemy troops were released instead of executed. We let the Iraqis elect a government, and then made our troops obey that government, rather than making that government obey our governor-general. We armed and trained Iraqis rather than killing any non-American with a weapon.

We had troops in Bosnia years after Clinton promised they'd be home by Christmas, and we were on the wrong side. He sent them to Haiti where we had no national interest. He sent them to Somalia with inadequate material (including Hummers w/o sufficient armor protection). Not a peep of condemnation from the left.

We have troops in Korea 5 decades after the war ended. Nobody whines about 'bring the troops home!' or 'They need to start standing on their own feet!' with regards to Korea.

This is how we know the protestations from the left are false, hypocritical, political, and, ultimately, unpatriotic.

(Had I been President, after the Blackhawk Down debacle - which wouldn't have happened on my watch anyway - there would BE no Mogadishu. Slum clearance by way of B-52s... cause Napalm sticks to kids... and the Tokyo fire raids did far more death and destruction than did both atomic bombs)

NEE!
Post a spew alert D*MMIT!

merry go monkey! haha.

ALL,

BTW, it's GENERAL PELOSI as the troops now call her. After all, with all of that military experience, she should have 5 or maybe even SIX stars on her collar!

"What did we go there for in 2003 that we have so far failed to accomplish?" We wanted to give them a working democracy.

"A lot of Iraqis remember 1981 like it was yesterday. They may be Shiites, and they may be willing to work with Iran, but they don't want to be ruled by Iran." I don't see how their wishes have anything to do with whether Iran will invade.

Anyway, even if I'm wrong about that, I don't see any reason to believe that Sunnis and Shiites are going to treat each other well once we leave. The Palestinians can't even manage that, so why should these people?

"But a major group [of the insurgents] are the people who are taking pot shots at us because they want us to leave."

These people aren't part of some unified, multi-ethnic group, but rather it's Sunni fighting together with Sunni and Shiite with Shiite. And that's why I say they have other motives. The Sunnis obviously don't like losing the (unjustified) power they had under Saddam, or else are afraid of having no power at all in the coming government. And the Shiites want much more power than they deserve. Either way the U.S. doesn't look as bad (morally) as you believe.

Your analogy is that of a cop who captures a burglar and then stays in your living room. My analogy is this: the authorities step in to a household where there is a lot of physical abuse, only to find that once the main abuser is restrained, the family is still horribly dysfunctional.

Me: "Anyway, the day we aren't attacked is the day we can leave, so why would those who hate our "occupation" keep attacking us?"

You: "They don't believe that. Heck, I don't believe that." You believe it with respect to the Kurds! You yourself admitted that we are leaving them alone, so why wouldn't we leave the rest of Iraq alone once it calms down?

Fighting Democrats
Democrats will fight, but only after this country has been backed into a corner and someone is stomping on us hard!

On Sept 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, starting off WWII and we did nothing. Some Americans sent off their guns to England to help them and our Government made a few loans to England to help them out, but our country was not on a war footing.

And in March of 1940 Japan established their government of China, and we still did nothing.

In May 1940 the evacuations from Dunkirk happened. In June of 1940 France surrendered and still we did nothing.

But on December 7, 1941, 27 months after Germany invaded Poland and 21 months after Japan defeated China, and 17 monthes after France surrendered Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and only then did we get decided to go to war.

If only we had gotten involved earlier, before Germany had conquered and controled Western Europe and before Japan had total control of the Asian area, except for what American control, the war would have been shorter and less lifes would have been lost.

We waited until our enemies, the Axis countries had total control over their conquered areas, before we started to fight, we waited until we were backed into a corner and were being stompped before we did anything.

tanabear and youmakemelaugh2
You guys are either well programmed or well paid oir both. You post the same junk everyday on every thread. Get a new song will ya? Your boring the rest of us.

Mobius
Well said, but that is critical thinking that is required on the part of the current crop of Dims. They are incapable of that. It physically pains them.

youmakemelaugh2
You do indeed make me laugh with your stupid posts! Do you really believ the crap you post?

David
Of course they believe it. To paraphrase Ronaldus Magnus, "It's not that liberals are evil, is just that so much of what they believe, is just WRONG!"

Then they defend their positions with spume, twaddle, and endless repetition of phony talking points, which no matter how many times they're refuted, they trot them back out (or cut and paste) again and again.

They do provide a service, though. About the time I'm ready to call for shunning them completely, totally ignoring them until they go away, one of our prescient posters will come up with a counterpoint that I have no knowledge of, and I learn something.

For the most part, I skip over them and go right to the rebuttals, usually funnier and right on target. I do regret that the discussion often descends into childish name calling.

So just exactly where did you receive your degree in economics? If you know so much more than Dr. sowell why don't you email him? Good luck with that. In the mean time sit down and shut up or put your money where your mouth is. P.S. Answer me a question O'Economic Genius? Please tell me why every major city in the country is controlled by liberals, yet they have high poverty, high crime, high cost of living, and rampant homeless populations? Notice Louisianna has been controlled by the left for decades, especially New Orleans, and yet it's a mess. That should have been Utopia, yet it fell flat on it's behind! Katrina should have passed through with out a hitch, but it didn't. It still can't get it's collective behind together and guess what? It is still controlled by left wing so called economic genius'.

It's a good thing
...there's no demagoguery here.

Pedantic
Pedantic Comment:
"A chicken in every pot'

Herbert Hoover's Promise, circa 1928

replace the word Democrat w/ Republican
Definition - Demagoguery:

"A leader who obtains power by means of impassioned appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace."

Demagoguery is the GOP-NeoCon-Rove-Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld MIDDLE NAME.

9/11 was used to get power and very effectively.

The GOP has gone to the Demagoguery political-water-well many times since with regular and reckless abandon. Hey it worked for them. If the Dems do it, it is just they are jealous they are using their TRICK. Now the GOP is stuck with pro war group.

Articles like this HELP the terrorist!! (how about that for demagoguery)

Great artical but insert Bush or Neo-Con or Republicans where you wrote Democrat. How can the GOP call the Dems on being political. That takes some real balls. Does the GOP think the people will not notice the hypocrisy? Bold

Demagoguery? That is what ROVE and the GOP machine did so well and still tries to do, manipulating w/ impassioned appeals to the emotions with slogans and sound bites:

Senator Murtha is a coward
Surge
Slow BLEED
Yellow Cake
Cut and run
Adapt to win
Defeat-a-crat
MUSHROOM Cloud
Nazi appeasers
Stay the course
Support the troops
Mission Accomplished
Greeted like liberators
The Dems are being political
The Dems are being demagogues
The Dems are being obstructionist
Fight them there or fight them HERE!
With Us (war) or with the terrorists!!
Vote for the Dems is a vote for Al Queda
The liberal main stream media blaa blaa blaa

It really a bunch of BS.

The Dems have no plan? Lie

"Mens lives are at stake?"

Yep and Bush's policy cost many of them their lives needlessly, meaning they did not have to die if there was planning and competence on his Admin's part.

"If the recent increase in the number of troops......freer hand in dealing with the terrorists.......reduces the level of violence enough to stabilize Iraq enough for American troops to start coming home before the 2008 elections, the Democrats will have lost their gamble."

Lie and Dreaming. This is Demagoguery. Geee it would be nice, but smell the coffee, it smells brown and stinky.

Don't be a lying liar, who lies to just lie. I have never seen a party/president in my life time have so much arrogance, hubris and open disregard for the people and constitution than Bush, conservative neo-con republican movement of the last 10 years.

To call the Democrats POLITICAL is the "Pot calling the kettle black". The GOP-ROVE-BUSH-CHENEY-109TH CONGRESS/SENATE ARE THE MOST POLITICAL GROUP IN MODERN HISTORY. Its suppose to be people, country and nation first, not PARTY. Once elected, there allegiance is to the People and the Constitution!!!!!!!! Damn it.

Good for the Dems. I just WISH the Dems used MORE Demagoguery and as effectively as the GOP, but that takes coordination and Lock-step-ness. The Dems are not that organized. The GOP/Rove party is the MASTER of the sound bite, slogan and Demagoguery! FACE IT.

Tom Delay calls "Liberals" Nazi's in his new book and compares his illegal activities to the plight of the jews in WWII! WOW! He is a NUT JOB OF THE 1st ORDER.

How come I read YOU ALL's post and there is never outrage, never calling your party to account? You only blame the democrats, main stream media or liberals? That is sad and pathetic and immature.

This article is NOT a matter of intellectual debate, but just an exercise in hurting the other party or "liberals", which by the way are made up of fellow americans with the same dreams, hopes and love for america you have, may be even more. That GOP is a house full of far right radical and corporate influence, they just don't camp out on their door or front lawn.

The anti-war people will get louder, and if we are not drawn down in 2 years, I WILL BE Camping out on their lawn and front door as well.

Don't panic! We will have spys, special forces, constant overflights and strategic attacks from air and sea. We will be gone but not forgot.

The next president of the USA will be anti-occupation (not war) in Iraq.

WHAT'S MOST DISTURBING IS THE LOCK-STEP, LACK OF descent and unified talking points (Demagoguery) sung in harmony by the GOP and the Right Wing Media. That is disturbing and a bad sign, but..........

THANK GOD WE HAVE THE CONSTITUTION, BILL OF RIGHTS and RULE OF LAW. THIS IS A NATION OF PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE, NOT FOR THE PARTY BY THE PARTY! THE GOP HAS FORGOT THAT. THE PRES IS NOT KING.

REMEMBER NOV 2006! Ouch that left a mark.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, I'LL PRAY FOR THE ONE's WHO WANT TO DIVIDE US LIKE THIS AUTHOR Thomas Sowell SO HE SEES HOW IS WRITTING Dangerous Demagoguery, HURTS AMERICA.

THE GOP PARTY HAS USED DANGEROUS DEMAGOGUERY TO A DEGREE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN MY LIFE TIME.

ROVE MAY HAVE BEEN A GREAT POLITICAL MIND AND GOT THE GOP POWER IN 2000 AND 2004, BUT HE DID IT AT THE EXPENSE OF OUR NATION, WHICH IS DIVIDED and HURTING. STOP THE MADNESS. WE ARE ALL IN IT TOGETHER. IF THE GOP WILL NOT EVEN ENTERTAIN THE REALITY OF GETTING OUT AT ALL, THAT IS DISTURBING. LAST I HEARD +1000 DAYS AGO MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

THE "NO TIME LINE" SOUND BITE IS BS. THE WORLD KNOWS WE ARE GETTING OUT THIS YEAR OR 5 YEARS FROM NOW, IT DOES NOT MATTER. THEY LIVE THERE, SO THEY WILL BE AROUND. WE COULD "WIN" AND LEAVE TOMORROW AND THERE WOULD BE A COUP THE NEXT DAY.

DID WE NOT LEARN OUR LESSONS? IRAN? WE PLAYED REGIME MAKER AND THAT BACKFIRED, AS IT HAS MANY, MANY, TIMES IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

LEARN HISTORY OR DOOM TO REPEAT.

THE MORE BUSH & GOP SCREW-UP, THE MORE THE GOP TRIES TO BLOW SMOKE UP OUR A$$ TO COVER-UP, BLAMING EVERYONE BUT THEMSELVES. THEY ARE THE ONES WORRIED ABOUT THE NEXT ELECTION, NOT THE DEMS.

What emotions and prejudices of the public did Bush use to obtain power? Our prejudice against planes flying into our buildings? Our emotional response to 3000 dead citizens? Funny we didn't follow the self declared "American Hero" Kerry. Why is that?

JetPilot
In your long winding discourse, you failed once to address any points Sowell made. His main point being: The Dems were fortunate to get thier majority in both Houses: they achieved said majoirty primairily by saying that they were not Republicans. Now that they are the majority, the electorate expects results. However, impeachment and surrender are not the kind of results the electorate is looking for. The Democratic quandry is as follows: the only skills they appear to have is to dissent- they do not know how to lead, and surely they do not want the responsibility. Yet, to remain in power they must come up with something. But if they come up with something, the people may in fact hold them accountable. Oh, What to do?

Pelosi opened a Pandora's Box when she allied herself with the MoveOn crowd. They do expect results: Surrender and Impeachment. She knows the Democrats chances for success in 2008 rides on avoiding both. But without an agenda of her own, what can she do?

Republican Demagoguery with Censorship
Boy, you couldn't make this stuff up. Why do so many posts, that some on here don't like, simply *VANISH*? It always seems to happen around those Republican's here who have their silly little blogs. I'll bet there is a connection.
Why do you censor out opposing views?

jetpilot
How can you call the vote to put arbitrary timelines for a year and a half from now on the spending bill anything but purely political? The Dems could cut off funding in 08 if the surge fails. They could cut off funding right now if they truly believed the cause was lost. Time for some real intellectual honesty (if you're up to the task). What other possible reason could there be for putting in these timelines other than to try and guarantee defeat?

jetpilot
Feel better now? I know I always feel better when I've had a good long sit on the pot to get all that nasty stuff out of my system. Your post was pretty much the equivalent of what I leave *in* the pot, so you must be feeling mighty relieved now...

Matthew
"They didn't have to go to the State Supreme Court and get it overturned by their Federal Supreme Court." The first decision by the Florida State Supreme Court was such a blatantly partisan decision in favor of the Democrats that even the liberals on the Federal Supreme Court told them to do it again. Remember?

The rest of what you are saying, when taken together with what you said before, is too confused for me even to respond to. For example, you use the analogy of the cop staying in the house, implying that our being there is morally wrong, but now you say it isn't morally wrong. Which is it?

What now?
We heard before the elections that if the Dems got power we would see some real changes. They could barely muster enough votes for a non-binding resolution and had to resort to last minute pressure to get those. Non-binding. Doesn't that equate to meaningless?

I agree with Mr. Sowell, if they are serious then they should draw the purse strings closed and take responsibilty for the consiquinces.

Matthew
Ignoring other parts of your illogical post, I'd like to address the part where you ask, "how can leaving possibly be considered a loss?"

Perhaps you're too young to remember a war in southeast Asia where the US Congress decided to pull all the troops out and 2 - 3 million people died as a result.

That's how.

Don't forget the one tiny difference between leaving Vietnam and leaving Iraq.

Yes, millions did/will die when we leave. And again, horrible, bloody deaths. But the Vietnamese never promised to destroy the United States and murder or convert all non-Muslims. I know the Dems think they can talk the, uh, freedom fighters out of it, but the Dems are dreaming/smoking/otherwise out of their minds.

Judging from the persuasive tactics I've seen the liberal display on this site, they're really gonna have their work cut out for them when they try reasoning with the...freedom fighters.

White House Spokeswoman Dana Perino Forced To Admit ‘Inconsistency’ Over Transcripts......

During the briefing, Perino again defended the notion that Karl Rove and other top aides should be able to talk to Congress without a written transcript, calling the White House offer “quite generous and extraordinarily open.” But moments later, when asked about new documents showing Alberto Gonzales approved the U.S. Attorney firings, Perino pointed to transcripts of Gonzales’ remarks on CNN that she claimed exonerated Gonzales.
A reporter pointed out that Perino’s defense of Gonzales “illustrate[s] perfectly why a transcript is necessary.” Perino responded, “I see your point,” sparking laughter from reporters. “I understand that some people would think that that is not a good idea, and I understand the inconsistency of my own statement of referring back to a transcript."

Oh, no she didn't?
Oh, yes she did!

Why are they so blind to what our enemies say.
Ben Laden wants us dead. Radical muslims want you to convert to islam or die. Bush has done too good a job on fighting them. We haven't been hit again. He has forced them to fight us in Iraq. If we pull out to early and with the mission incomplete, it won't be my problem. It will be our kids problem. They will be fighting them for the next fifty years.

Why is every study you cite is produced by an organization well known for their leftist bent. They are not impartial.Social science research is incredibly weak and subject to bias to begin with.On top of this you have researchers with a strong vested interest in finding a certain result. They do not form their hypotheses based on data(the scientific method) but rather cull data that fits their a priori beliefs.Any information discordant with their beliefs will be ignored, buried, discarded,or unpublished.Christ! What are you going to cite next as your "data" source- The Weekly World News,or,even worse, the NYT?

Polly
You're correct, the North Vietnamese communists never threatened the USA proper. They knew they'd never win.

The North Vietnamese Army (NVA) was supplied and equipped by the USSR and the PRC. The communist strategy at the time was to take over one country at a time through revolution or through invasion (Korea and Vietnam).

If the USA allowed that to happen (as we did in the 1930's), eventually we'd have been fighting in California or New Jersey.

Certainly, we could allow Iraq to be controlled by Iran and Syria. What's the harm? It's the idea that Islamic fundamentalists will create a caliphate and in 10 - 20 years they'll control a significant amount of the world's oil reserves and they'll be attacking countries in Europe.

It won't be the old tactic of blitzkreig. It will simply be terrorist tactics: kill women and children by explosives until the government (as the US Congress is doing again) capitulates.

One country at a time, slowly.

Mobius & Fighting Democrats
Excellent post. I thank God daily that Pelosi, Reid and Murtha were not around in 1945. Their absence or the absence of like-minded people in power then allowed the United States to fight until an unconditional surrender was accepted by Japan and Germany. Had that condition not been met - one of the Axis powers would have developed the bomb and things would have been very different today. We all owe our existence and way of life to the leaders and veterans of that era, it's too bad more of us don't share their resolve and moral clarity.
Unfortunately, if more people don't start educating themselves on this conflict AND Pelosi & company get their wishes - my grandchildren won't understand the concept of freedom or enjoy the fruits of capitalism - the observation of Sharia Law and 30% unemployment will ensure that.

I don't think the democrats are evil, just amazingly naive and selective when it comes to truth and fact. If you want a laughing example - visit the Democratic Party website and read their own stated history folder - it jumps from 1848 to the "close of the 19th century", absolutely no mention of the period between 1850 and 1900. Why? Because they were very wrong then, like they are now. As long as none of them were getting killed - they could live with slavery and oppression in the south. It took someone outside their party, the Republican Abraham Lincoln, to hold the line and fight to preserve something that we all currently enjoy and need.

I see no difference in this conflict and what occurred during the 1940s and 1860s. The stakes are just as high, most likely higher. If Pelosi continues to indirectly support the people trying to kill Americans in Iraq and we leave based on her design - the consequences for America and worldwide freedom and peace will be devastating. Nancy needs to understand that our enemies in and around Iraq did not grow up attending bake sales and lusting for peace and justice. They must be not just be defeated, but also humiliated. Their survivors must be forced to question their beliefs that we have proven to be in error or medieval.

For the appeasing liberal

Islamist Website Instructs Mujahideen in Using Popular U.S. Web Forums to Foster Anti-War Sentiment among Americans

In the past few months, Islamists engaged in "media jihad" have increased their efforts to expose as broad a Western audience as possible to their jihad films, which purport to document the growing success of the mujahideen in Iraq and Afghanistan. As part of this endeavor, they have posted jihad films on popular free video-sharing websites such as YouTube, LiveLeak, and Google Video, hoping that such films will tip public opinion in the West against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan - thus pressuring Western governments to withdraw their troops from these countries.

As part of the campaign to foster anti-war sentiment among Westerners, and more specifically among Americans, a member of the Al-Mohajroon Islamist website with the username Al-Wathiq Billah instructed mujahideen in how to infiltrate popular American forums and to use them to distribute jihad films and spread disinformation about the war.

The following are excerpts:

"Raiding American Forums is Among the Most Important Means of Obtaining Victory in the Fierce Media War... and of Influencing the Views of the Weak-Minded American"

"There is no doubt, my brothers, that raiding American forums is among the most important means of obtaining victory in the fierce media war... and of influencing the views of the weak-minded American who pays his taxes so they will go to the infidel American army. This American is an idiot and does not know where Iraq is... mandatory for every electronic mujahid ."

"It is better that you raid non-political forums such as music forums and trivia forums... which American people... favor... Define your target... and get to know it well... Post your contribution and do not get into... futile arguments..."

Indicate You Are an American

"Obviously, you have to register yourself using a purely American name... Choose an icon that indicates that you are an American, and place it next to your nickname ."

"In my experience, the areas most visited in American forums... 'Random Thoughts' and 'What's going on in your mind?'... takes priority in the American forums, and is highly popular. You should post your contribution there... This should include films of the mujahideen in Iraq, mujahideen publications in English, and images and films of the Americans' crimes, killing unarmed civilians in Iraq... etc."

"Invent Stories About American Soldiers You Have Personally Known"

"Obviously, you should post your contribution... as an American... You should correspond with visitors to this forum, the frustrating situation of their troops in Iraq... You should invent stories about American soldiers you have personally known (as classmates... or members in a club who played baseball and tennis with you) who were drafted to Iraq and then committed suicide while in service by hanging or shooting themselves..."

"Also, write using a sad tone, and tell them that you feel sorry for your neighbor or co-worker who became addicted to alcohol or drugs... because her poor fiancé, a former soldier in Iraq, was paralyzed or his legs were amputated... which will break their spirits, oh brave fighter for the sake of God..."

How to Make Americans Feel Frustrated With Their Government

"You should enter into debate or respond only if it is extremely necessary... Your concern should be introducing topics which... will cause frustration and anger towards their government..., which will... render them hostile to Bush... and his Republican Party and make them feel they must vote ton bring the troops back from Iraq as soon as possible."

"Do not... discuss issues pertaining to Arabs or Muslims at all, whether negatively or positively... because this could be a trap for you... In addition, do not ask people to circulate the material in other forums... as these types of requests will expose you..."
