Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There is no real question that Democrats are more skilled at politics than the Republicans are. Democrats are more articulate, not to say glib, and they know how to stick together.

You don't see individual Democrats in the Senate going off to do their own thing in concert with the opposition and against the interest of their own party, as Senator John McCain has done with so-called "campaign finance reform" co-sponsored with ultra-liberal Senator Russ Feingold, and as he attempted to do on immigration with liberal icon Ted Kennedy.

Democrats know better than to betray their base of supporters -- welfare state beneficiaries, the teachers' unions, environmental zealots, the ACLU and tort lawyers -- the way the elder President Bush betrayed his supporters who relied on his "no new taxes" pledge and the way the current President Bush betrayed them by attempting to create amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Republicans have too often forgotten the old-time admonition to the girl going to a party, to always remember to "dance with the one who brung you."

Even some Republicans have said privately that the Democrats have the edge in playing the game of politics. Given the greater political shrewdness of the Democrats and the overwhelming bias of the media in their favor, it is remarkable that Republicans have had any political success at all.

That the Republicans are still a viable party is one measure of how far the Democrats' policies and values differ from those of most Americans.

Nowhere is that difference greater than when it comes to defending the American people against crime at home and against military and terrorist threats from abroad. Liberal Democrats -- which is to say, most Democratic politicians and all of their leaders -- are ready to try almost any "alternatives to incarceration" of criminals and almost any alternative to maintaining military strength as a deterrent to enemy nations.

More is involved than an unwillingness to face unpleasant facts of life. There is a coherent ideology behind these positions. That ideology goes back more than two centuries -- and has failed in country after country over those centuries. But it is an ideology that sounds good and flatters the vanity of those who consider themselves part of a wise and compassionate elite.

Republicans have too eclectic a collection of beliefs to beat the Democrats on a purely ideological basis. Moreover, the liberal vision is a more attractive vision because it assumes away many of the painful and even brutal aspects of human life, especially the fatal dangers of relying on words when dealing with people who only respect force that is backed up by a willingness to use it.

Facts are the only real antidote to a seductive vision. But facts do not "speak for themselves." Somebody has to articulate those facts and explain their implications. The liberal media will certainly not do it and too often the Republicans do it badly or not at all.

How many people are aware that the black-white income difference and the male-female income difference both narrowed during the 1980s -- that is, during the Reagan administration? Democrats talked a better game on both fronts and to this day are widely regarded as the best hope, if not the only hope, for minorities and women.

How many people are aware that crime rates soared when liberal ideas became part of the criminal justice system in the 1960s and only began declining in the 1980s after more criminals were put behind bars and kept there a longer time?

Democrats have learned to avoid admitting to being liberals and this year are running a number of moderate candidates.

If these new moderate candidates are elected and give the Democrats control of Congress, that control will be exercised by senior Democrats who will hold leadership positions -- and all of them are liberal extremists, whether people like Nancy Pelosi in the House or Ted Kennedy and John Kerry in the Senate.

Getting people to vote for moderates, in order to put extremists in power, may be the newest and biggest voter fraud.

Mr. Sowell you are profound:
"Getting people to vote for moderates, in order to put extremists in power, may be the newest and biggest voter fraud."

Throw them out
I think it would be short sighted to reward Republicans this election after the stunts they pulled. I say throw them out. When they remember to act like Republicans again, and fight for the freedoms of the middle class and a ladder from the lower classes to the upper classes, then bring them back.

Look what they gave us: George W. Bush. He learned to buy Florida, he is trying to buy the Hispanic vote, and he was unable to solve any of the difficult domestic problems such as social security. Meanwhile, he continues to march forward with shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class, and making the taxes income based (social security, letting the AMT affect more Americans), while pushing to get rid of the wealth based taxes (get rid of the inheritance tax, reduce capital gains taxes). Who is that protecting? The ownership class. Who pays? I do.

I had a cut on my finger requiring 3 stiches. The emergency room charged my insurance company $1300.00 for the privilidge. Thank you Republicans. Your wealthy friends gain from the cheap labor, and I pay with my health care. Middle class pays, wealthy benefit.

Social security is a regressive tax, that is aimed squarely at the middle class. Roughly 15% of income up to 100K. Social security is nearing income tax as a provider of tax revenue (I view it as any other general tax).

Throw them out. Republicans are taking care of their friends on my dime. At least the Democrats are honest about their desire to enslave us all. Maybe with a big enough dose America can get back to finding real freedom.

Another Fraud
The fraud, not spoken of, is what happens when the elected ones on the left get to Washington. Rather than remain loyal to their districts, their loyalty is demanded by the Party. If I were a Dem I'd be very angry to find out the person I voted for to represent me has to put the interests of the San Francisco Treat before mine, or suffer the consequences. But then perhaps Dr. Sowell used other words.

DEMS ARE TIGHT ALRIGHT
Like a band of gypsies (jimmy hendrix) there is no honor among thieves. Ed, your thinking is all wrong, you would not be rewarding the Republicans for a job not done well, but you would be rewarding yourself and your family for generations to come by sticking with the Republicans and letting the band of gypsies continue to run wild, clueless and without a plan.

Right on -- this is not the time to play games with our lives -- or our troops, our sons and daughters on the front lines, fighting against those who would come here - AGAIN - and kill us.

This election is only a local one, in your state, but the cumulative effect of putting Democrats in power again would HURT OUR COUNTRY. Please don't do that, if you are a Republican. Think of Kerry's disparaging remarks about our troops, and vote for the Republican in your district, so Kerry doesn't get more power. Thomas Sowell's last comment is gold. "Don't elect moderate Democrats to put the extreme LEFT in charge" - or something like that. Profound words from a profound thinker.

Spank them in private
We cannot chastise Republicans by electing dems, the damage the libs will do in two years will take ten to unwind.

Write your reps and tell them what you expect of them this time or they are OUT in 08.

My only problem with GW is he is too nice in his dealings with liars, a uniter cannot win with people who do not have this countries best interests at heart.

Dems know Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and will break the bank eventually, they used the money for their welfare fraud vote buying, but won't fix it for then they will have to admit their crime.
We need to get this country back to the framers vision before we lose it.

repubs voting dem is crazy
it really is silly to vote out those Republicans that at least represent some of your views for a Dem that is truely hostile to your views. it is political suicide. don't buy it.

vote republican

Tanabear
problems with crime, education, the economy and taxes are taken care of? A poor choice of words at best. GOP control has reversed the deterioration a little in some areas, but education is worse than ever. Besides immigration and WOT, the tax structure, tort reform, Social Security reform, medicaid reform and preservation of the Judeo-Christian culture are vital to our way of life. The WOT is self correcting. If the Jihadis have successes, such as wiping out 50,000 in the superbowl parking lot, we will escalate too. But cultural and financial problems can wipe out a country. The Weimar Republic comes to mind.

Hey Fletch,
I had some hings to say too...but you said it all! Great post my friend!

Hammer them in the Primaries
Seawolf, I couldn't agree more. Moreover, the time to hammer Republicans that don't act like Republicans is in the primaries. The great state of Ohio has a few Republicans that could use a good horse whipping, but the turnout for primaries is abysmal.

That said, I am not so certain this will be a landslide victory for the Dems. They remain completely silent on any issues that matter; with good reason as admitting to raising taxes, giving amnesty to illegals, and reducing our intelligence capacity would surely work against them. The Republicans, for the most part, are outlining plans of what they think should be done and are taking a stand. The Republicans may very well lose some seats, but not enough to lose either the House or the Senate. Remember that for the past 8 years or so polls have almost always stated that the people don't support George Bush, but what happened in the two polls, 2000 and 2004, that really mattered.

To the disappointed
Ed, maybe you and others have forgotten, Rome was not made in a day. The return of this country to its former greatness and the elimination of the left’s debauchery is a slow inch by inch process. Voting for a democrat is to toss the baby out with the bath water and add salt to an old wound.

Your ranting makes me think it wasn’t you finger that was cut. More like you neck. Grow up. Face the facts. This is a long slow and arduous slog. If your not up to it get the he11 out of my foxhole.

On Iraq
"How many people are aware" that the crime rates in our inner cities are greater than in Iraq.

You have a better chance of walking from one side of Bagdad to another and retaining all of your body parts then you would walking through just about any of our major cities.

It scares me
to think that short sightedness will put my whole family in danger if voters "punish" the repubs for not doing everything they wanted. Voting for dems ensures that all of us will be put in danger because of their soft attitude towards terror.
Yesterday, I heard Bill Clinton speak at some rally and he was making fun of the republicans, saying they tell us there are terrorists at every corner (I'm paraphrasing)and then laughed. This is not the party I want in power during wartime.
He also made a joke that repubs tell you that there are so many illegal immigrants in this country you will be tripping over them (once again I'm paraphrasing). I have not seen the dems do anything about the illegals either.
So for those who vote for the dems to punish the repubs what you are going to get is not anything better, but worse.
OK. So right now it's a choice between two evils so to speak. Punish the republicans in the primaries. Make the changes then, not now.

ed
I agree with you about the ER charge. Remember, though, that the insurance company doesn't pay the whole bill, usually about 70% of that. Also remember that you were one of the few that paid that day so the ER has to inflate the charges to offset all the losses from the uninsured and indigent. Sounds a little like socialism, eh?
As others have stated above- what???? The Bush tax cuts shifted more of the income tax burden to the wealthy. The tax cuts were across the board. Everyone saw their tax rate go down or disappear entirely. How in the heck could those at the lower end see a massive tax cut when they paid very little in the first place? The wealthy went from paying 64% to 66% of the tax burden and overall revenues went up, a lot. The wealthy took their money and invested it- this money was then used by businesses to expand and hire more workers or to buy new technology that made them more efficient. Everyone benefits from more jobs and lower prices.
Do you support the death tax? How dare you lay claim to more than half the money that I earned and saved in my lifetime. This is pure socialism and is pure evil. You want to loot from me? Watch your back because someone with "greater need" will be looting from you!

Pepp
"Punish the republicans in the primaries. Make the changes then, not now."

This is a tired arguement. With incumbunt(sp) advantage in every race so great, next to no one worth voting for ever challenges.

I do not mind voting against my interests to send a message. It is all I can do.

The GOP will lose in 2008 if the candidates insists on amnesty. I will never vote for any candidate who advocates it. Mr. Sowell is right about party discipline.

He is also right on the mark about PR. Rush is a tired ol wh*re for the party, Medved is the new tired ol wh*re. Bush did well getting Snow in; but since party discipline broke down due to bad policy stances, we had to listen to the same old tired (and hated) mouth pieces like Cheney and Frist; the republicans are losing.

I do not know who they are listening to but maybe the politicians will get back home long enough to counter the cocoon(sp) effects of the beltway-and gain some perspective.

I am not the NRA! My vote is all the ammo I have. Besides the sky will not fall with the dems in charge; Johnson, Carter, Clinton; I lived through them all.

Preaching to the Choir
The Demos hold the loudspeaker. They control the press and the television networks. When Ted Turner smugly and arrogantly remarked that anyone who dared to appear with an American Flag lapel pin on his suit jacket had to be more closely related to the chimpanzee or the knuckle dragging orangutan than to species "homo sapien", he spoke for the entire media establishment.
Conservatives still speak inside an echo chamber. When Ann Coulter appeared to speak at the University of Connecticut, winter last, she was shouted down. When the Minuteman founder appeared to speak at Columbia U. several weeks past, he was shouted down. Conservative free speech is still dead, crushed under the heel of the liberal jackboot. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister once remarked that if you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it. The NYT, the WaPo, the LATimes, ABC,CBS,NBC, and CNN rediscovered that fact and are busily engaged in doing precisely that.
Benjamin Franklin sagely advised his fellow conspirators that if "we don't all hang together, we'll all hang separately."
Immediately after the Columbia Shuttle disaster, February, 2003, one of the broadcast networks scientific talking heads poo-pooed the current talk of walking away from space eploration by saying "There are things in life worth dying for,.... this is one of them."
The early patriots, the colonists dressed as native Indians tossing King George's tea over the side in Boston Harbor, Nathan Hale, the soldiers that frigid winter at Valley Forge, the soldiers of both the North and the South at Gettysburg, the Marines that landed at Iwo Jima all felt that there were certain things worth dying for.
This generation, with very few exceptions, feels that nothing is worth dying for. The ultimate historical irony would be that the children of the so called "Greatest Generation" might just be the worst generation. Our legacy already has one strike against us, the retreat from Vietnam. Will we add another retreat to the list?
Abraham Lincoln endured riots against his policies in New York City and Washington D.C. He also endured being called chimpanzee, cretin and orangutan. How many monuments have been erected to the name callers and rioters so far? Over the past 240 years, history has richly rewarded the men who have worked to advance freedom and democracy in their time. We had our chance.

Donaldd-get a grip
Your post ticks off the worst of the talking points. Stock market may be gambling to you but it is the engine that drives this great economy. Your class warfare rant falls apart when one understands that the "poor" move up the income ladder faster here than anywhere on earth only to be replaced by immigrants that are dieing (literally) to get here. This is the place where the poor get richer. Immigrants understand this but spoiled American cry babies like you do not. Shameful. Democrats that complain about the increased spending to replenish the military that is constantly neglected by Democrats are hypocrites. 9/11 shows what results from such weakness and neglect. The tax cuts worked. Economy recovered from stock market meltdown and 9/11. Check the stats. The "rich" you hate so much pay the bulk of them and their share went up. Get an education. Learn to understand some economics. Read about the Laffer curve until you "get it".

BS, ed
Those foolish folks who view things in vague generalities: "Republicans" being "rewarded" after the "tricks they pulled".

What a ridiculous bunch of hogwash.

The individuals who are running for re-election are not the same individuals who "ed" would "punish" by refusing to vote for them.

That they are in the same general ideology is one thing, they may both be Republicans, but the only people you are "punishing" by failing to vote for the Republicans who DESERVE to be voted for, are the WRONG PEOPLE.

PUNISH people in the Primaries, not in the general election. Or you will wind up punishing yourself and a bunch of innocent voters, who deserve the BEST we have, even if they are not PERFECT.

Kimberly
You obviously don't know what an extremist is. I'll give you a clue, we're fighting them right now on the other side of the world. I know libs seem to have forgotten about that, given their penchant for taking the enemy's side, but its true. While you sit and worry about our "torture" of these poor souls, they gladly kill anyone that doesn't agree w/ their ideology. Sorry, but most American are not liberal. Not by a long shot, and the past elections have proven that. The democrats stand only for their special interests, period. They certainly don't stand for most Americans, as ,most Americans don't agree w/ the fringe groups like ACLU, GLAD, PETA, NEA, Big labor, and your enviro-nuts. Most Americans do not want socialism implemented in this country. That's why we like lower taxes, more freedom, smaller gov't and a strong national defense.

Kimberley
You need to go work for Lillian Vernon. Your ideas are ancient and old-fashioned, and liberal ideas have failed everywhere thy have been tried.

Independents and Liberals
If you fail the country now, it doesn't make much difference whether you were a liberal, or a selfrighteous independent. You both perform the same grave disservice to us all.

All for one, one for all. A united country stands. Divided, you can root for yourself.

Kim writes,
"The illegal indefinite detaining of "enemy combatants" without substantiating proof is a travesty and thinking, moderate Americans know this."

I question the illegal part of your assumption, but since I do not know what your definiton a thinking, moderate american is, I will assume a sliver of a minority are with you on this.

Unless of course you use a misleading question on your poll, prefaced similar to your above comment.

I consider myself both moderate, and thinking. I also have absolutely no problem detaining enemy combatants for as long as is necessary. If WWII would have lasted 10 years, we would have had tens of thousands of German prisoners here in camps for the duration, with no hope of a trial.

11h

Ed
The only politicians that buy votes are dhimmicrats. They call it "sharing the burden."

Just a few things to remember:
LBJ took the social security tax money and used in the General Fund so he could pay for his "Great Society". That's where your future went.

Jimmah Cahtah said we had to "Lower our expectations." There went your middle class dream.

Clinton spoke of "Not only equal opportunity, but equality of result." There goes working for what you want. You can wait and the gummint will give it to you.

Tannabear: I agree about the illegal immigration issue. We should and must control our borders. One thing to do is take away the sop to unions requiring a local employer to sign a certificate stating that there isn't an American around qualified to take the job. That would be true immigration reform.

I also think that we should prosecute the war on terror a little differently. We should not give terrorists any rights. We should immediately execute anyone that starts shooting and is not in uniform as per the Geneva Conventions. Same goes for anyone caught hiding in the general population after firing at troops, ours or Iraqi. No one out of uniform should be treated as a POW, again, per the Geneva Conventions.

The only problem in the War on Terror is that we have not prosecuted it vigorously enough.

Donald- clueless
Sorry pal, but you're as wrong as you could be. You may want to save that nonsense for your Cindy Sheehan rally because no one here is buying that bull. Maybe you don't know what a good economy is but in reality, our economy is doing well and the tax cuts have done what they were intended to do. I know taxes are the heart and soul of leftists like yourself, but high taxes are a hinderance on the economy. By heavily taxing the richest, you aren't helping the economy, you're only causing more harm. I suggest you go take a few classes on Economics and you may learn a thing or two. And just so you know, many more Americans are buying stock than ever before. Ever heard of 401ks? How about IRAs? Yes, those retirement plans that Middle America is using to save for their retirments? Myabe you're banking on that Social Security for your latter years, but I'm not. I'm not rich, but I know enough to know that SS will be either bankrupt or completely gone by the time I retire. You need to wake up and see the real world and not that liberal haze you're caught up in. The socialist dream you're thinking of doesn't exist. It doesn't work. Been tried and failed everytime.

Those awful, evil, dirty, rotten rich
"It matters not how many businesses are created by the rich if workers can't afford their products. In many cases the workers can't afford to buy the products or use the services they are making."

This reminds me of an argument I had several years ago with an old union hand.

He was complaining that we should strike the plant where we were working so that they would hire more union workers and pay them more. When I pointed out that the plant may not be able to pay that many people that much more, his reply was "So what! I don't care if they close the plant down! It will serve them right!"
I asked him what he'd do then. He said he'd go to another plant and work.

Now he's sitting at home complaining because all the jobs have been shipped overseas.

Gong Goes the Weasels
It was Shakespeare that said, “Brevity is the sole of wit”. When Dr Sowell does brevity, he does it best of all. [Liberalism] “is an ideology that sounds good and flatters the vanity of those who consider themselves part of a wise and compassionate elite.”

Self flattery is the height of conceit. I find vain people to be incomparably repugnant, as a matter of fact.

Lying to the electorate for purposes of self promotion over belief is now perfected by Democrats in this voting cycle. Next time we’ll probably see a game show contest like “Who Wants to Be a Congressman” used to select Democratic nominees. They’ll sit in the hot seat answering questions about which issues poll the highest in which districts. The questions get harder and harder for those districts that are actually contested. They might even call it “American Idle Congressman” The winner gets a whole lot of money (read: to buy votes), his/her choice of committee chairmanship and an all expenses paid trip to Teddyland.

Somebody call Chuck “Gong Show” Barris, there’s an idea on the loose here.

Judges
The judiciary is critical, and therefore more than enough justification for returning the Repugs to power... for now.

But they need to learn a lesson. I just do not think this is the right time. It would be nice if the Repugs acted like a majority party. People like Hastert, McCain, Graham, Chaffee, and Frist need to be thrown to the lions eventually, but let's wait until Dumbya gets us a few good Supremes, and pray the House can hold off any scamnesty giveaways.

Just the facts please
Donaldd writes: In 6 years George W Bush has borrowed us into bankrupsy to the tune of near $4 trillion and $406 Billion of our tax money is paying the interest alone on that debt annualy and growing.

------------------------------------------------

Just curious, did you know that Bill Clinton proclaimed that his budgets produced a 480 billion dollar surplus that was used to pay down the national debt the last 4 years he was in office? Did you also know that the GOA reported that there was no budget surplus in any of those 4 years and that the national debt actually INCREASED 550 BILLION the net result was a TRILLION dollar accounting error? And we are supposed to trust the democrats with the economy?

tax cuts?
Pitbull:

"1: This has been a slow steady recovery without the bubble of over speculation and uncertainty"

Over speculation? Humm, sounds like the housing market.

"2: The tax cuts have poured tons of cash into the economy which has fueled a sustained buying and hiring spree by small and large companies"

The average person hasn't had much of a wage increase in years, and the tax cuts amount to what, maybe a couple thousand dollars at best for the average family. So WHERE is all this money coming from?

Just a thought but, how much money was poured into the economy by all of those home equity loans, mortgage refinaces and cash outs? People are now mortgaged to the hilt, and praying that the bubble doesn't pop on the housing market, eliminating all of that "equity" the BANK appraisers said they had. Because they will be upside-down in the blink of an eye. And what did they use that equity on? Cars, vacations, paying off credit card debt (which they promptly racked up again).

I'm really starting to believe that it wasn't so much the tax cuts that stimulated the economy as much as it was the increase in everyone's home equity. And the local gov'ts are loving it because they are raising huge amounts of money in property taxes because of the bloated values ON PAPER! The problem is where are people getting the money to PAY for these mortgages (AND TAXES)? And if they can't, what's going to happen to property values? And do you think the local govt's are going to LOWER appraised values, and in turn the amount of property taxes due?

Look up the term "hoodwinked" in the dictionary.

Progressives? Democrats?
The left is a joke. Nothing but lies, deception and disinformation, more commonly known as propaganda.

THIS is what the left doesn't want you to know about Iraq....or should I spell it Irak.

Do you know? I didn't know! How could we?

Did you know that 47 countries' have reestablished their embassies in Iraq?

Did you know that the Iraqi government currently employs 1.2 million Iraqi people?

Did you know that 3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 new schools are now under construction and 38 new schools have been completed in Iraq?

Did you know that Iraq's higher educational structure consists of 20 Universities, 46 Institutes or colleges and 4 research centers, all currently operating?

Did you know that 25 Iraq students departed for the United States in January 2005 for the re-established Fulbright program?

Did you know that the Iraqi Navy is operational?
They have 5 - 100-foot patrol craft, 34 smaller vessels and a naval infantry regiment. Did you know that Iraq's Air Force consists of three operational squadrons, which includes 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft (under Iraqi operational control) which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 Bell Jet Rangers?

Did you know that Iraq has a counter-terrorist unit and a Commando Battalion?

Did you know that the Iraqi Police Service has over 55,000 fully trained and equipped police officers?

Did you know that there are 5 Police Academies in Iraq that produce over 3500 new officers each 8 weeks?

Did you know there are more than 1100 building projects going on in Iraq?

They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities.

Did you know that 96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations?

Did you know that 4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October?

Did you know that there are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%?

Did you know that Iraq has an independent media that consists of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations?

Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004?

Did you know that 2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a televised debate recently?

OF COURSE WE DIDN'T KNOW! WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW? OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US!

Instead of reflecting our love for our country, we get photos of flag burning incidents at Abu Ghraib and people throwing snowballs at the presidential motorcades.
Tragically, the lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves two purposes: It is intended to undermine the world's perception of the United States thus minimizing consequent support, and it is intended to discourage American citizens.

---- Above facts are verifiable on the Department of Defense web site.

The economy?
Donaldd writes:
The economy is BS propaganda as the rich stock market gamblers get richer and poor are the fastest growing element of our country and adult children are unable to find work and staying home longer or returning to the home of their retired parents for support.

Anyone want to guess where Donaldd lives?

Blame the economy all you want but read any trade magazine and the number one problem faced all industries is the recruitment and retention of qualified employees.

Most Dangerous Place

.....Dr. Sowell...

.....Where is the most dangerous place on Earth to be if the Marxist/Racists (Liberal/Democrats) are in charge?...

.....Answer: In the womb.....COLOSSUS

As usual
Rockman writes:The average person hasn't had much of a wage increase in years, and the tax cuts amount to what, maybe a couple thousand dollars at best for the average family. So WHERE is all this money coming from?

----------------------------------------------------

Talk to people in any industry. Ask them how much money they spent to take advantage of bonus depreciation that WAS offered from 2001 to 2004. Everyone from construction companies to farmers spent massive amounts of money on capital expenditures that benefited the employees of companies ranging from Caterpillar to John Deere to GE to small metal fabrication shops. Trillions in pay and over time was spent to meet the demand created by this single piece of legislation.

Small minds can not grasp macro economics.

Well, Donalld ...
I have a total income per year under $25,0000, that is BEFORE taxes. I don't have a big portfolio but I am a stock investor, and that blows your theory that only the "rich" buy stocks. The cut in capital gains tax helped me along with the big guys. The economy and I are doing well.

I really resent you libs and moderates who show your complete and total lack of understanding the capitalist system when you shut your mind off to facts. I don't like deficits but I wonder if your concentration on the deficit, which has been cut dramatically by the way, was so intent when liberals and moderates kept it going up for the last 40+ years.

I don't make a lot of money and I don't want government handouts taken from others like my daughter who works her butt off making that $150,000 to support herself and two children. She doesn't need people like you wanting to take from her to give to someone else. So, when you start talking about "taxing the rich," you'd better be darned certain of who you consider rich or you're going to find people like me shoving your stupidity down your throat.

And by the way, if we don't spend mponey to win this war against Islamic terrorist crazies, you won't have to worry about deficits or anything else about life in the U.S. because life as you and I know it will be gone. and I'll be blaming a large part of that event on people like you!

WHERE did they get the money?
Hockey Goon:

"Small minds can not grasp macro economics."

I've got a degree in business, so I CAN grasp macro economics.

What I'm saying is that it was the housing market that was driving a large part of this "recovery". And much of that was driven by low interest rates which spurred people into "trading up". I was in Real Estate in 2005 and I can tell you that it was insane here in central Florida!! Housing prices, and especially for condos, were climbing incredibly fast. Now, there are for sale signs everywhere, and I'm seeing signs on the side of the road offering 40 and 50 year mortgages to "lower your payments".

People didn't have more money. They only THOUGHT they had more money. Soon the time to pay the piper will arrive, and there will be forclosures galore. And what happens to home values when the supply of homes on the market surpasses demand? Ever heard of a "distress sale"?

The bank appraisers created the money out of thin air. And we spent it.

Grandma robby
you go girl!
Ditto on what you said!

Liberal = American?
Kimberly, I hope you dare not say that the average American is a liberal. Despite what you may say, liberal does not equal the average American. I'll respect that opinion, but respectfully, I disagree with it. That's like saying if you don't like the Bush administration, you are a liberal. And as you have read on this board, it does not.

As far as torture or illegal detention - did you READ the MCA of 2006? I have now put the link in a reply to you TWICE. If so, I would invite you to please show where in the Military Commissions Act it authorizes torture or illegal detention. Or maybe you're still talking about the Patriot Act? Let me know - I'll have to clarify my response if that's the case.

Rockman - The tax cuts were the government's part in helping the economy. Wage increases are something set by business on their own. So do you feel that the government should tell businesses how to do business? The other part about it is continuing to improve. Simply just doing the same job day-in and day-out will not guarantee you a raise. I don't know - maybe it is the way I was raised... (shrugs)

"Disappointed Republicans"
I ain't saying most of them are plants, but I am saying that Townhall can start its own greenhouse from a lot of the "disaffected and disappointed Republicans" who post here.

Partition the USA (Humor)
It recently occurred to me that all of the talk about partitioniong Iraq just might be worthy of consideration for the USA. I am convinced that the battle between conservatives and liberals can never be resolved in any other way because each believe their ideology to be the saving grace for this country. Being a staunch conservative, I believe the liberals are driving us over the cliff, but I recognize that the liberals believe just as strongly that if we all held hands with those that are trying to kill us, they would stop being angry at us. After all, it wasn't their fault. Everyone knows that the warmongering Republicans, especially GWB, is responsible for all of the unhappiness in the world.

They also believe that all of the stingy selfish people that made the most of the educational opportunities, (available to all Americans by the way), and continued to work hard to achieve a higher level of success in life, should eagerly and freely give the fruit of their labor to the less fortunate, (less fortunate being defined as those that prefer to drop out of school to enjoy the less stressful career of feeding at the public trough). Now I recognize there are many people in this world that truly deserve our compassion, in addition to all of the assistance we can provide. These people truly are less fortunate, but liberals seem to be unable to make that distinction!

I suggest that the solution is to hold an election to determine which states want to be red states and which one's prefer to be blue. Then we can partition the country based on the will of the people. This seems to be the most democratic way of resolving this issue. I would be willing to cede the northeast and the west coast to the liberals, let them write their on "Living Constitution", and see who survives the longest. (My apologies to any conservatives that live in these areas, but I suspect you could have this territory back after the libs become an extinct species, which shouldn't take too long). Anyone want to bet that we'll be bailing them out before a decade has passed, maybe sooner. Of course I'm not too sure I would want to bail them out. I think I would enjoy taunting them with witty comments like, "I TOLD YOU SO", or "YOU MADE YOUR BED NOW LIE IN IT".

I think it would be hilarious to see them institute all of the social programs they can dream up only to discover there's no one to pay for them. You see, I am sure that all of the less fortunates people in the first class would move to the blue states, so that they could continue to feed on the liberal teat. As far as those less fortunate in the second class, we conservatives would be happy to have them.

After a few laughs, provided compliments of their social engineering, we can sit back and chuckle even louder when they beg us to rescue them from the evils of the world. Since they won't have a military, they would be an easy target for every terroist organization looking for someone to incinerate. I get hysterical when I imagine Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Kennedy, or Kerry trying to reason with a stark raving lunatic bent on sawing their head off with a dull butcher knife. (Kerry: "Did you know I served in 'Nam. Hey what are you doing? What's that thing in your hand? Hey wait a minute, I'm on your side! Let's talk about this, arrgh, arrgh, choke, gasp, gurgle, gurgle").

What do you think? Even if the terroist didn't get them, their rate of attrition would render them a doomed species. But, I am sure they would all be happy and more importantly to me, they wouldn't have anyone to blame but themselves. As the last one falls, maybe he or she would finally realize their policies weren't such a good idea after all. Unfortunately, in the true unfaltering tradition of a liberal, someone, somewhere on this great planet would be thinking, "Wouldn't it be a better world if we were all equal"? Let me see now? To each according to need, from each according to ability? I wonder if anyone has ever thought of that? I wonder if anyone has ever tried that? Imagine? I could be a great leader and all the people would love me! And I could be rich and live in a castle, while the people adored me from afar. Hey, I could even be the great arbiter of justice and take from the rich and give to the poor because everyone really would be happier if they were all equal, except me of course. Yea! I am better than they, I am an elitist, I am a liberal! It is my right! It is my destiny!

Vision and the lack of it
Once again Dr. Sowell makes great points.

The Democrats, esp. in Congress, ARE indeed more disciplined and on-message. The closest thing we've seen lately to "maverick" Democrats in Congress are the few remaining relics of the bygone 1960's era like Lieberman and former Sen. Zell Miller. Apparently only more-or-less committed leftists and apparachiks get Democratic nominations for congressional seats. In any event, as Dr. Sowell points out, a freshman Democratic congressperson, whatever their own inclinations and whatever they promised their home constitutants, the radical career pols who run Demmie Congress will lead them by the hand to the washroom and everywhere else.

Furthermore, Democrats don't actually have this hangup about wanting to be loved by everybody. They know who their adversaries are, and upon whom they intend to impose the costs of their policies. They have written these enemies and losers off as electoral assets & don't waste time or effort courting their support. Contrast this to the "moderate" Repub who gets nauseous at the thought of blowing off one radical leftist among his/her constituents.

That's why this "vote for the individual" mantra, especially in Congressional and legislative office, is a crock. It is irrelevant what the individual Demmie candidate ran on, after election it will give way to what the party leadership decides to do. That's why in so many "red states" you see these "moderate" Democratic candidates who disengenuously proclaim themselves "independent" of the national party and often even avoid identifying themselves in campaign materials as a Democrat. Yeah, right. Grow a brain, folks, and recognize what is really going on when you see this phenomenon!

I'm sorry, after the Clinton Administration debacle & the actions and statements of the present party leaders, I have to be suspicious of anyone who would accept a Democratic nomination for any office. Anyone who would take on the label of Waco, Loral, Elian, Filegate, Chappaquiddick, and so forth as their political identity is ipso facto questionable regardless of their personal history and professed positions.

In any event, in Demmie/popmediapeak, "moderate" means different things depending on the party affiliation of the labelee. A "moderate" Democrat is a Democrat who is publicly more in the Pat Moynihan or Hubert Humphrey mold, i.e. "moderate" has been redefined leftwards. A "moderate" Republican is (judging by the performance of those so designated) a spineless invertebrate chameleonlike critter that stands for nothing, quakes in dread at being called a "right winger," & soils its drawers at the very thought of unfavorable pop media coverage or editorial nattering.

On the other hand, we've learned from Waco Willie that a "centrist" is a flaming socialist Democrat who wants to fool the unwary into voting for him. This species can be identified by the pop media that will persistently call it a "centrist," and by its nuptial cry of "I'll Cut Taxes!" (After election, this call turns into "I've worked as hard as I've ever worked...")

Far fringe leftists actually have the cheek to call themselves "conservative" now, because they want to preserve the leftist welfare state programs and institutions their predecessors have erected. After nearly a century of having extremism enacted and imposed upon us, it is ironic that seeking to reform or dismantle that extremism is now decried as "extreme."

Which brings me to what is going on with the GOP. Ever since the fall of Gingrich, they have acted toward big-city "liberal" newspapers the way whipped dogs do when said papers are rolled up. McCain for one has been a blatant media prostitute doing their bidding. Congresspersons run screaming from the dread label "right wing" and seek the warm fluffy appellation "moderate."

You have to wonder what the Repubs were thinking passing such bilge as the prescription drug entitlement, or "No Child Left Behind." They betray their principles and base, yet get absolutely no thanks or credit from those they supposedly bought off. Talk about lose-lose! Then they come whining back to conservative voters after all this carefree frolicking in the wonderful land of Big Sugar Daddy Pork Barrel Welfare State, and want to motivate us by throwing us a few dry bones and telling us bogeyman stories about how the Democrats will catch and eat us if they win back Congress and/or the White House.

Dr. Sowell is charitable characterizing Republicans' beliefs as "eclectic." I would say they appear mostly to have an ideology of staying in office indefinitely, and being talked about nicely by the pop media. Since limited government conservatism is incompatible with expansive government careerism by mutual backscratching, they try to convince conservatives that this is supposed to be some sort of deep political strategy we have to be strung along with indefinitely before it ever yields any visible return.

I would characterize the Democratic vision more brutally too. It's a vision of "what empowers ME today, so long as I can punt the costs and consequences onto my enemies or into the future beyond my political career!" That's why we're saddled with fiscal timebomb "entitlements" eating us alive now. That's why they favor "internationalism" and folding American soveriegnty into the UN, et al.; they expect to get to live in the gated enclave with the elite club while the peons and plebes toil under an impoverished world socialism.

Kimberly: Hypocrite
Kimberly stated:
“Of course, by eliminating habeas corpus, it no longer matters, right? Thanks to Bush and his visions of sugar plums and totalitarian rule dancing in his head."

"And if you have no problem detaining "enemy combatants", how would you feel if you, your wife, kid or grandkid were considered such - without proof or legal counsel?”

As I recall “unlawful combatants”/ “enemy combatants”, being non-U.S. Citizen’s , have never had the “writ of habeas corpus” right accorded to them, e.g., WWII. In fact, according to the “Third Geneva Convention”, “unlawful combatants” have no rights & can be put to death at the discretion of the government that captured them on the field of battle. In contrast, the US coddles them at "Club GITMO." That being said, I find your intellectually disingenuous leap of logic (i.e., U.S. citizen’s being arbitrarily rounded up and held in custody via the employment of the “enemy combatant” designation) somewhat troubling, given the Far-Left’s lack of respect for fundamental civil rights WRT minimally-franchised male & white citizens:
+13th Amendment vs. involuntary servitude: Men being held in prison indefinitely after not paying court-ordered child support for children that may or maynot be their biological offspring
+14th Amendment
-Civil Rights vs. institutional discrimination: anti-white, anti-male affirmative action/quotas
-Right of Due process vs. Sexist “Violence Against Women Act”of 1994 (VAWA): Men automatically assumed to be guilty when arbitrarily accused of “domestic violence” by women (e.g.,Duke rape myth)

Apparently only members of Leftist- sanctioned "victim groups" should be accorded Civil Rights as individuals. I find your selective application of “Civil Rights” hypocritical at best. But then again, overt feminists are generally intellectually-dishonest hypocrites by nature.

Hockey Goon:
It's nice to see someone that understands the laws of supply and demand, which are basically human nature. The high tax supporters do not understand that increased spending creates more tax revenue.

"Silent Cal" reigned over unemployment #'s that Dubya and Clinton could only dream of. Why? The highest tax rate was around 19%... THE HIGHEST. Most people's tax burden back then was around 10%.

I'll bet everyone on my block would go out immediately and buy a new car if their tax burden was lowered to 10%. GM and Ford would need to beg their workers to come back to keep up with demand. The companies that build their machinery would be scrambling to keep up with demand.

All of those employees back at work and pulling 10-20 hours of overtime every week would be crowding the home improvement stores on the weekends, causing Home Depot to double up hiring. While Dad's laying down the new deck in the back yard, Mom's out splurging at Macy's, where they're offering bonuses to new sign new employees, who are enjoying the cleaner air since everyone is driving a newer, cleaner car now that they can afford them.

All is going well until some suit gets on TV and says that somewhere, someone isn't benefitting from the economic tide, and he needs to collect 30% of your wealth to prop them up since they won't do it on their own despite the fact they've received 10 job offers in the last week.

It doesn't take a genius to see how economies work. The less tax, the better.

And for those who gripe that the middle class are shouldering the burden, my taxes have decreased, not increased. If the Dems get the helm, we all know that within a few years, families of 5 with $50k coming in each year will be considered "rich" and get a tax increase. It never fails.

Basic Economics for Rockman
Fletch, well done! Take a break, you earned one.

Business Degree? Whatever Rockman paid for it, it was way too much, given his inability to discern real value. Maybe he’d be better off trading it in for some actual leverage about now, the kind that comes with an ability to produce wealth. Unless and of course, wealth is a four letter word for him.

In order to have a distress “sale” there has to be a transaction. In order for a market to exist, someone must control enough capital to initiate an exchange of value. Yes, the fact that a bunch of people didn’t use their money/credit wisely only means they suffer the consequences, directly. I realize you want only the best for everyone, all the time. But, I don’t think that plan has ever played well. Those short sighted people who used low interest rates to satisfy their cravings did so cheaper than if they had used regular commercial credit, which is still available and processing transactions last I looked.

If investors leave the housing market for the securities market, “irrational exuberance” over housing subsides, in favor of another investment vehicle. But then again, now might be a good time to be out picking up a few properties, or two.

If you were in housing market in 2005, good for you, if you’re out now, better. If you were a farmer borrowing money in the 1980’s, bad plan. If you want to farm today, you better have the ability to apply big capital. And if you do, you’re harvesting big money about now.

Rockman, buddy ol’pal, resources have alternate uses. I highly recommend you read at least one of Dr. Sowell’s books on economics before commenting under an article of his.

America in Debt
Fletch writes:

"Frankly, the whole premise is silly."

I hope you are right. But given the changes in the bankruptcy laws which now shields the credit card companies, the trend where Americans have shifted their unsecured debt (credit cards) and car loans to their HOMES, and then refinanced, home equity lined and cashed out the equity that the BANKS said they had, I'm not so trusting.

It just seems like we are being milked one last time before the slaughter. "IF" something does happen to the housing market, the job market, or the stock market, it WILL be a slaughter. Either way, inflation and rising property taxes are choking us to death.

ed
guess what an illegal would have paid for the stitches.

nothing.

guess what's gonna happen if the Dems get in control.

illegals will have rights that Americans could never hope for...and guess who's gonna pay for all their entitlements?

us.

I shudder to think what's gonna happen, because our creepy President looks out more for illegal Mexicans than American citizens.

wish you'd see this and vote smart.

"overwhelming bias of the media"
How much more proof do we need?
Does anyone dispute that these days?

It’s a market, get on with it.
Geez, Rockman, one last time, the bank sells money. Value is set by the market. You said you were in real estate. Where do “Comps” come from? The banks don’t make up what houses are selling for, buyers and sellers do. You can’t borrow the same amount of money for your house today as you could in the summer of 2005.

Obviously, entrepreneurs are bad
Here in Indiana, the Dems ran an ad that made my heart sink. They pointed out that our incumbent Republican representative had 1) made millions in his trucking business (no mention of any nefarious activity, just "made millions") and 2) voted to turn our Social Security into private accounts, a boon for Wall Street--"maybe fine," they said, "for millionairs like him but not for us average Hoosiers."

I don't know who's running against the evil representative, presumably a guy fired from a dishwashing job, but I tremble when I realize that SOMEONE thinks Hoosiers will vote the (inherently evil) businessman OUT and vote instead for someone with less education or entrepreneurial energy or drive or whatever he/she has to offer.

Don't know if it worked yet and I guess I'll find out tonight. Then what, move to Australia if the lazy guy (who probably still lives with his parents) wins?

Demosthenes
Tell Kimberly how you really feel! ;)

She will never get it though, they never do. It must be a genetic defect, or she is still too young to have learned anything. As Winston Churchill said, "If you are not a liberal at 20, you have no heart. But if you are not a conservative at 40, you have no brain." Liberals are mostly brainless, facts don't get in the way of their rants.

Class Warfare
The anointed elite on the left, their pandering media allies and their blindly following uninformed, useful idiots just don’t get economics. Each and every time the tax rates have been lowered in this country, and other countries as well, tax revenues have soared! How can that be? By far, the largest coefficient in the tax receipts equation is NOT the tax rates themselves, but rather the overall economic conditions of society. A strong and growing economy leads to greater tax receipts. It has been proven that the most successful way to kick-start the economy is by letting the people keep more of their OWN money to spend and invest. Lowering tax rates means more money for the citizens to spend and invest, which stokes the economic engine, which creates more money to spend and invest, leading to increased economic output, which leads to more money to spend and invest, and so it goes. And it has happened every single time the tax rates are cut.

Instead of complaining about how the tax rates favor the rich, who in liberal speak are defined as anyone who is gainfully employed, we should be cutting the tax rates. In fact, it would be great policy to cut the tax rates every 12 months until tax revenues begin to decline.

I come from a lower middle class background. Although I will never inherit a dime from anyone, I am quite content in making my own way through life. That said, I still don’t get why dying is considered a taxable event in this country. Someone sacrifices and works hard in life to create wealth for themselves and their family. Yet when they die, the government takes a huge chunk of their accumulated wealth to pass on to others. Everyday in this once great nation, people lose their businesses and farms over this inane, Robinhood policy. In my view, it is simply criminal to tax death.

r0_d2
OH NO!!! The Democrats are "charging" that the Republicans are cheating.

Who'd have thought?!!!

Rockman . . .
drives around central Florida in 2005 (last year!), sees "for sale" signs (probably after the hurricanes!), then concludes that the real estate market is in the toilet.

And to add to the error, he claims to "grasp macro-economics"! What? As central Florida after a huricane goes, so goes the nation?

Pu-leeese!

Several nice posts today Fletch
Fletch writes: It has been asserted that having a degree in business bestows a grasp of macroeconomics. Sadly, this is far from the case. Quite the contrary, a business degree from mostliberal arts colleges in this country requires nothimg more than a semester of Economics 101, which generally covers only the basics of MICROeconomics and, demonstrably, an inordinate number of people have managed to get a degree without really grasping THAT discipline.

-------------------------------------------------

I hadn't gotten around to responding to Rockman's claim of economic theory superiority because I was too busy contributing to the economy, I agree with most of your analysis.

While agreeing with you on the ease at which one can obtain a "business degree" I also feel the need to point out that Rockman inadvertently admits to one of the classic traits of inadequacy as a result of following that route, namely his inability to keep a job. Rockman spent AN ENTIRE YEAR selling real-estate in one of the hottest markets in the country before moving on to something he was more suitable for, I can only imagine that he's now selling appliances or shoes. Either of these professions would limit his life experience in such a way that he would have no concept of the benefits of tax reduction.

The truth about Socialism
Socialism does not, cannot, create an abundance of goods and services. It can only re-distribute the plenty created by the hated capitalist.

The real problem to Socialism is that a complete accomplished Socialism destroys all incentive for production. Why would anyone go to work when being poor is the safest vehicle to having the government providing for your every need?

Totalitarian countries turn to military expansionism because once the national capital as been re-distributed and no new capital is being created the only way out of chaos is to militarize the lazy masses and direct them to expropriate the richness of their neighboors.

Socialists claim to love Peace but they constantly fail to grasp how their de-legitimization of capital ensures the rosy future of war.

The poor
The poorest Americans will, unfortuately, bear the brunt of the damage that will inevitably come through implementation of the dems agenda.

Repealing the tax cuts for "the rich" (i.e. small business owners) and raising the minimum wage will cost countless low-wage workers their jobs.

It's really simple - Example: An employer can only afford to pay out $120/hr in total wages and has 20 employees who earn $6/hr.

Raising his taxes reduces the employer's total hourly wage output to $100, meaning 3 people lose their jobs.

Raising the minimum wage to $7.25 in addition to the tax increase would cost 2 more people their jobs and place an addiitional burden on the remaining 15 workers to get the work done.

There you have it - the net effect of the policies of the self-titled "party of the little-guy." Of course, linear thinking was never their strong point.

Agreed
Polly writes: OH NO!!! The Democrats are "charging" that the Republicans are cheating.

I believe its part of their training manual, just as Al Qaeda instructs their operatives to make claims of torture after being captured, what would be even more amazing is if they DIDN'T make these allegations.

I expect by morning the DU and KOS to be fairly humming with such claims; it’s been their MO after losing in the last 3 national elections. Even more amazing is that the after action reports always find that the only violations of any significance have been committed by the democrats.

Surely the biggest news yet on this day
r0_d2 informs us - "Daggett County has registered 947 voters for Tuesday's election. According to the most recent Census figures, that's four more than the county's population in 2005."

Well, of all the nerve of those evil Republicans. Everyone knows that's it is virtually impossible for a county to grow by four people over the course of a year.

But, take heart r0_d2 (that wouldn't be short for "rectitude = 0, disinformation = 2", now would it?), the 947 total registered voters for that county are still far fewer than the number of deceased-Americans who can be expected to vote a straight Democratic ticket in Cook County (IL) alone:)_

Amen
Thomas Sowell does it again.

ZGreat article. I have often argued to friends that Dems play the better game.

I agree with Don!
Lets break up the US in blue and red states. The blues states would be most of the east and west coast and also MN and MI. Let them run their socialist policies and lets see how it works. I just don't want to pay for it!

I know that you did that article in humor, but I think it is a great idea!!!

I would imagine that many people would want to move after such a change. First it would be blue staters moving to blue states and the same with red staters. But after a decade or two of failed socialist policies, I imagine that our lovely red states would get a large group of blue staters looking for work and reasonable taxes. (Actually this is already happening between California and Arizona.)

Where would the Red US capital be?

r_doh!
Daggett county, UT will have absolutely NO EFFECT on the outcome of any election outside Daggett county.

If this is a case of voter fraud, it is being comitted by the STUPIDEST pack of fraudsters ever. Four more registered voters than a year old census says live in a county with a population of under 1,000. There isn't even an incorporated city in Daggett county! What election are they trying to steal? Rodeo queen? As far as I know, that isn't a partisan election.

As far as the national elections are concerned, every incumbent in Utah has a virtually insurmountable lead.

If every vote from that county went for Christensen(R) it wouldn't be enough to swing the congressional race away from Matheson(D).

If every Daggett county vote goes for Ashdown(D), Hatch(R) will still be re-elected to the senate in a landslide.

If the republican party is as sinister as you apparently believe, you must be smart enough to admit that this particular instance does not merit evil overlord Rove's attention. But I'm willing to give your density the benefit of the doubt.

Yes! Solid posting Fletch!
Where ya been lately? I still believe that you need to start a blog. Your economic posts are excellent.

Repug-Lie-Cons strike again3
Brilliant plan, r0_d2, to post every trivial example you can find of unsubstantiated claims of Republican shenanigans – I know you’ve certainly convinced me.

But, I might want to be careful what you wish for. All these trumped-up charges are probably going to have zero effect on the outcome of any election, but, if you and enough other true-believer liberal agitators can raise enough attention, perhaps you can sway the national mood to want to see a concerted effort at eliminating voter fraud. Unfortunately, the two simplest and cheapest ways to achieve this are, first, to require careful review of the voter roles to ensure that every registered voter in a living, legal resident who is allowed to vote; and secondly, to require photo identification along with a visual cross-check against the voter roles in order for an individual to vote. These two simple and cheap (and therefore, unobjectionable to most people) approaches will almost certainly hurt the Democratic Party far, for more than they will the Republican Party.

I, for one, would greatly welcome any and all election reforms. Getting rid of true voter fraud will be a great boon to the Republican Party.

Thank you for supporting that aim!

Yes, I'm quite conservative

This is a post from ed.

George Bush bought Florida by passing one of the largest social welfare grants. He bought the old folks vote by paying for their pills (oh, with my money).

Regarding the estate tax, and other capital based taxes, as a conservative, I believe the rightful role of government is to protect our property. If that's the role, then that's where the money should come from: a tax on property. So I'm a big believer in the estate tax, and think most of the revenues for the government ought to come from it. Naturally, I think the government should be much smaller.

Regarding illegals getting free health care, no kidding. That was my point. It was also my point that the ownership class gets a tremendous advantage from the subsidies by middle class Americans.

So to all of you who are saying "Oh, you are a liberal," blah blah blah. No, I'm quite fiscally conservative. I almost always vote libertarian/republican. But I won't support a party that has abandoned freedom. My kid's future is too important.

Stealing Elections
Typical protocol for Democrats, especially in close elections! If you can't get the majority to vote for you, just claim you wuz robbed! We wuz robbed! We was lied to! We wuz misled!

Sounds like a bunch of idiots that should find a different sandbox to play in. After all, they are only children. Pelosi said it herself, if I'm not mistaken.

Amazing how the supposedly dumb Republicans continue to hoodwink and take advantage of the intellectually superior Democrats, time and again. That's another reason to vote Republican!

I would have grave reservations about voting for a party that is so easily duped all the time. What does that say about their ability to deal with the world's leaders? You know, like the midget in charge of North Korea? I guess we all know how that one turned out don't we?

Another curious point, I would be damned if I would continually show my ignorance by running around and telling the whole world how someone I thought was so dumb, convinced me to vote for a war that I now claim to be illegal. Especially when I had the same intelligence that GWB had, which was the same intell that Clinton had, and all arrived at the same conclusion.

Again, what does that say to the people that you want to vote for you. Vote for me! I got a plan! I don't know what it is, but as soon as the tooth fairy clues me in, you'll be the first to know. Trust me! I can do it better, as long as the tooth fairy doesn't mislead me!

The Sacred Right to Vote Democrat
http://blamebush.typepad.com/

A taste:

"Today, Americans all across the country, living and dead, will exercise their right and responsibility to vote Democrat. Of all the rights granted to us in the Constitution, the Right to Vote Democrat is one of our most sacred, second only to the Right to Choose. So it is vital that no matter how many times we vote today, we do so with the same courage and conviction we put into having abortions."

I didn't say it was "in the toilet". I just stated that I'm concerned that it won't be a "soft landing" and that we have yet to see the worst of it. And I'm seeing the "for sale" signs RIGHT NOW, everyday, all over the area. Signs offering HUGE rebates if someone will just buy the thing and take it off their hands. I see developments with new houses completed and just sitting there vacant with for sale signs in the yards, presumably because the buyers no longer qualified, or that the appraisal was longer up to what the purchase price was when they contracted for it. I hear of developers offering to pay your mortgage for 9 months if you buy one of their homes. I hear of developers offering to put a brand new MiniCooper in the garage if you buy the house from them. I hear of developers "adjusting" their prices down $50,000 in some cases. I see "for rent" signs with rents in the $3,000 to $5,000 range, which is, needless to say, WAY over priced for this market.

And from what I'm hearing, we are actually in part of the country that's in GOOD SHAPE!!

Pardon me but I didn't claim any "superiority" in economic theory, only that I understood many of it's aspects. Is Dr. Sowell more knowledgable than I when it comes to economics? I would certainly hope so.

"While agreeing with you on the ease at which one can obtain a "business degree" I also feel the need to point out that Rockman inadvertently admits to one of the classic traits of inadequacy as a result of following that route, namely his inability to keep a job."

Actually, my former position was as a software engineer in AT&T Labs. My "inability to keep my job" was related to the fact that India's Per capita GDP is $1,600, whereas it is over $40,000 in America. In short, my position was outsourced to India.

"Rockman spent AN ENTIRE YEAR selling real-estate in one of the hottest markets in the country before moving on to something he was more suitable for..."

In reality, I worked at Real Estate for 6 months and made around $50,000 on paper (and now that I think about it, it was in 2004, not 2005). Unfortunately, a good deal of those commissions have yet to materialize since some of the developments have yet to be built. Sadly, many of the Brits that bought those properties have had their sizable down payments tied up for years, while they are stuck paying the huge mortgages on their properties in England that they refinanced to get the down payment.

"I can only imagine that he's now selling appliances or shoes. Either of these professions would limit his life experience in such a way that he would have no concept of the benefits of tax reduction."

Actually, I'm back at my same position at AT&T (now SBC) as a contractor, making considerably more than I did before I left. Since I'm now in the top 10% bracket of income earners, I can most certainly understand the benefits of tax reduction.

But back to my point. The housing boom DID drive the economy a great deal because of all the spending it caused. Yes, the market drove the prices of the homes up, but much of that was from the speculative market. I can't tell you how many houses I saw on the market as "cash only", because they knew the banks wouldn't appraise them at the asking price, even though there were buyers ready with cash in hand. And people were qualifying for mortgages that should have never qualified. Mostly they did it by going with ARM's or Interest only loans. Now they are having a hard time because the taxes and payments are killing them. Bad decisions? Sure. But I think there were a whole lot of people making those bad decisions, and I don't think those people have even begun to pay for those bad decisions yet.

Yes, we can play "what if" all day. I'm simply stating my concerns based on what I'm seeing and my understanding of the laws of supply and demand. Could I be wrong? Most certainly. But in my limited experience, times usually get really bad right about the time it looks like things are going great. Just ask a pig or cow in the few months before slaughtering time how well things are going. I'm sure they would be just as optimistic about their futures, what with all the extra rations and all. Then one day......

Funny
No leaks yet from exit polls. I forget who it was who said that if the polls are good for the Donks, they will be leaked, and if bad, no leaks.

No leaks AFAICS, and our resident Demodroid is hollering about voter fraud (Code for "The dems are losing).

How did the Republicans trick him into making the recording, or is the democrat candidate mentally handicapped?

Perhaps I'm not as convinced by "John in DC" as you are. A real source would be nice. By the way, I must compliment you on your strict adherence to the democrat manual, not everyone can pull off being a victim 100% of the time as well as you.

r0_d2 Ole buddy, I have missed you!
I am happy to learn you are a gun collector. What kind of guns do you collect and why are you in such awful company?
They tell dastardly lies about us gun owners and call us unpleasant names. It must be tedious to converse with such inane creatures.

They keep passing laws that defy natural order and when they see adverse results they just pass another anti-gun law.
Predators gather and multiply wherever easy prey is abundant. If an area has many deer , rabbits and squirrels then cougars, wolves and coyotes will gather to prey upon them and multiply.

This holds just as true for human predators when ill conceived Democrat anti-gun laws render honest citizens helpless then robbers, muggers, rapists and murderers will gather and multiply in that area to prey upon the helpless public.

Anti-gun laws providing the temptation of risk free easy money lure otherwise honest men into crime and actually create criminals who cause suffering and death. We have 22,000+ anti-gun laws causing this misery.
Republicans have repealed some of the draconian anti-gun laws in many areas of America causing crime rates to drop sharply.
Democrats see the sharp reduction in crime but are too vane and arrogant to admit their laws actually CAUSE crime.

r0_d2 you are in horrible company. They will do anything to get on TV and lie to discredit us gun owners.

Glad to see ya back ole buddy.
What kind of guns do you collect?

Here is how it can be
True Patriot writes:

The anointed elite on the left, their pandering media allies and their blindly following uninformed, useful idiots just don’t get economics. Each and every time the tax rates have been lowered in this country, and other countries as well, tax revenues have soared! How can that be?

Because we are borrowing trillions of dollars from other countries, and are expecting our kids to pay it off some day. If I had a trillion dollars to put into any country in the world, I would expect tax revenues to soar.

Again, republicans are not your friends. The wealthy are getting wealthier because of people like you buying into the ridiculous tax structure. When the bill comes due it will be your kids paying it off with income based taxes, and the rich will enjoy their property supported with your kid's taxes.

The social security surplus was just a shell game by Democrats and Republicans. The democrats foudn a way to subsidize their programs on the backs of the middle class, and the republicans gave their ownership class buddies a huge free ride. WAKE UP.

Voter Fraud?

Is there a scoreboard somewhere with all of the alleged practices undertaken during this cycle?

You missed so much of my post I'm not even sure it's worth trying, but . . .

It doesn't cost $1300 to get three stitches. More like $200. The $1100 is because of illegals using the ER for health care. WHO BENEFITS? The wealthy who hire the illegals. WHO PAYS? The middle class. That's just one example. Rising crime rates, competition for jobs, for the freeways, etc. are suffered by Americans. Republicans have not protected us from illegal immigration BECAUSE THE OWNERSHIP CLASS IS WINNING BIG. And I, and I suspect you, are paying for it.

Regarding Florida, I guess that was somewhat oblique. George Bush passed a huge social welfare bill, drugs for the old folks, that I'm paying for. Well, he won florida, but he and the republican party that pushed it through has lost mine.

The purpose of government is to protect property. Therefore, Taxes should be based on how much property you have to protect. I hear conservatives say "Oh, the rich pay the vast majority of the income taxes." Guess what? They don't include Social Security taxes. That's a regressive income tax, that has supported the general fund to the tune of $1 trillion dollars. Oops, Rush Limbaugh forgot that. Who pays? Middle america. Who benefits? Democrats (they enslave the whole country), and the ownership class. That's why capital and corporate taxes have been going down. That's why it is harder and harder to bridge the gap between the classes.

Face it! The middle class is not represented by either republicans or democrats. But the republicans are closer to my values, or at least they claim to be. Throw them out now!!!! Then maybe they will reform themselves. There is no hope with the democrats.

News Flash
Attempt Being Made to Intimidate Democrats on TownHall.com.

A lone brave voice from the Democratic party, r0_d2, back from a recent meeting with 3CPO, has reported rampant and unprovoked attempts by shameless conservative regulars on TownHall.com, to silence his effort to report Republicans most recent scams to steal another election. He complained that the Democrats will never be able to win any close ones, if this practice is allowed to continue. He pointed to the ruling of the left of center Supreme Courts decision to award George Bush the presidency over that of another Al Gore, as an example of how widespread the conspiracy really is. Reports of Al Gore's attempt to disqualify the absentee votes of the military were unsubstantiated, but ongoing efforts by the Republicans continue since successfully stealing the election in 2000.

Stay tuned for further details!

To those of you...

That is why she will never do anything to stop Illegal immigration.

Fletch, THINK!! (please :)
There is no such thing as a conservative position in favor of capital taxation. You claim that it is the role of government to protect property and then argue (contradictorily) that the most appropriate method of taxation is an unprovoked taking of that property.

==============

Then how should you pay for it? Consumption based taxes are regressive. Why should I have to pay to protect Forbes magazine? I don't own it, Forbes does. He ought to pay to protect it. Note it is redistribution of wealth if I have to pay to protect it.

Where do you live?

I live in the L.A. area where crime is worse than ever! Probably because the Lefties have been in charge for so many years!

I agree Mountain Rose. L.A. is pretty bad. Take a look at the Morgan Quitno rankings of most dangerous cities. Their rankings released in 2006 come from the FBI crime statistics from 2005. We will look at the mayor and U.S. representative from these cities during that time. This was in Human Events recently.

Top 10 most dangerous cities in America w/ mayor and U.S. representative:

1. St. Louis, MO
Mayor: Francis G. Slay, Democrat
Rep: William Lacy Clay, Democrat, and Russ Carnahan, Democrat

2. Detroit, Mich.
Mayor: Kwame M. Kilpatrick, Democrat
Rep: Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Democrat, and John Conyers, Democrat

3. Flint, Mich.
Mayor: Donald Williamson, Republican
Rep: Dale Kildee, Democrat

4. Compton, CA
Mayor: Eric J Perrodin, Democrat
Rep: Juanita Millender-McDonald, Democrat

5. Camden, NJ
Mayor: Gwendolyn A. Faison, Democrat
Rep: Robert Andrews, Democrat

6. Birmingham, Ala.
Mayor: Bernard Kincaid, Democrat
Rep: Arthur Davis, Democrat

7. Cleveland, OH
Mayor: Jane L. Campbell, Democrat
Rep: Dennis Kucinich, Democrat, and Stephanie Tubbs, Democrat

8. Oakland, CA
Mayor: Jerry Brown, Democrat
Rep: Barbara Lee, Democrat

9. Youngstown, OH
Mayor: George M. McKelvey, Democrat
Rep: Tim Ryan, Democrat

10. Gary, Ind
Mayor: Scott King, Democrat
Rep: Peter Visclosky, Democrat

We should all think about what the right thing to do is this election. I think Tanabear should look at this too. Apparently we are going to recreate the problem that was taken care of in the 80's and 90's with poor choices.

Fletch > Rockman
It isn't really even fair to have the 2 in the same sentence. Fletch understands economics and Rockman doesn't.

10 most dangerous cities! WOW!
I am surprised that a columnist hasn't jumped all over that information. 9 outta 10 of those cities have Dem mayors and all the congressmen are Dems! I wonder how long the Repub has had the mayor job in Flint?

Spank them in private
I agree that it makes no sense to vote out Republicans who could be brought back to conservatism in favor of Democrats who we know will enact liberal legislation and erode the work of the last decade.

Write your congressmen. Let them know what you want and let them know they'll be standing in the unemployment line in 08 if they don't mend their spendthrift ways and take illegal immigration seriously. Educate yourself on what bills are coming up and let your delegates know how you want them to vote. Take note of how they do vote. You won't get what you want everytime for a variety of reasons, but if they vote wrongly too many times, don't hesitate to vote for the conservative challenger in the next primaries.

Anyone who thinks there are no challengers to choose from is obviously not voting in the primaries. At least where I live, you need a score card to keep track of the multiple candidates from the parties. I don't buy the "There are no good challengers against the incumbent argument." In Alaska, we voted out the sitting Republican governor to put a relative unknown up against the former Democrat governor. The media outlets keep a tight lid on local elections, but all the conservatives I know are voting for Sarah Palin simply because we don't want a re-run of tax-and-spend-and-give-away Tony Knowles. If she turns out to be too inexperienced for the job, she'll attract seasoned handlers and improve on the job, but her inexperience is better than Tony's experience any day!

"Your perception that "times usually get really bad right about the time it looks like things are going great" is not supported by any actual real world evidence. It is nothing more THAN a personal perception and it is inconsistent with any readily available data."

And that is what scares me. Maybe I can't put my finger on it, but the whole world is changing quite dramatically right now. Maybe it was the 9/11 attacks that still have me spooked. Maybe it's the "War on Terror" that doesn't seem to have an end in sight that has me concerned for our future. Maybe it was the millions of illegals marching on our streets in broad daylight with absolute impunity that has me nervous. Maybe it's the massive expansion of the gov't under the Republicans, and the Presidents expansion of powers at the expense of civil liberties that has left me less than trustfull of their intentions. Maybe it's the change in the bankruptcy laws, the over marketing of home equity loans, refinances, and incredible growth in real estate values that has left me suspicious of the banks and lenders. As if they wanted to make sure that everyones debt was secured by real property, so that when the bottom falls out, we are left holding the bag of debt, while they are left holding the deeds to our homes.

You're right, it IS just my perception, and I hope I'm wrong. But I just feel like we are being hoodwinked into a false sense of prosperity and safety. Like lambs to the slaughter.

Does that satisfy your urge for documentation about Nancy Pelosi?

Fletch, Enter the light
You are saying the hordes will come to destroy America because citizens have the right to own property? I don't think so. I suspect they want to take over its property, intellectual and otherwise. I also believe a person is property after a fashion, so I think there ought to be a poll tax to represent that. I'm not saying that only Bill Gates and Forbes should pay to defend the country, just more (significantly more), since they have a much greater stake in it. And yes, I'm an isolationist.

Regarding illegal immigrants, you seem to claim some knowledge of economics. So you should be familiar with the law of supply and demand. If you have more labor, the supply increases relative to the demand and so the cost drops. This happened at Tyson foods, as an example. Wages there dropped significantly. Hmm.

Another example of this whole thing. I'm in high technology. These jobs are being exported around the world. It is my belief that major corporations are willing to do this because of the stability provided by the US military. Again, who pays? I do. Who benefits? Well, you get the picture.

And finally, regarding your idea that borrowing money from foreign countries isn't a bad idea. I say fine and good for you if that is a risk you want to take. Just don't make it a risk I have to take too. The government should not have debt. This is partly a problem because the owns so much these days (roads, schools, etc.) but they shouldn't.

Redhead: At least Fletch is willing to support his arguments. Can you say something original? Or are you just a clown.

Dems Too Glib?
There were too many comments to read, but I have a little problem with the opposition being called articulate, and glib. What I read on the Liberal websites (AOL, for instance) is just this: "Bush lied. Impeach Bush. Bin Laden is more important than anything else. US casualties are horrendous. Republicans are Repukes. Etc......"
So much for communicating intelligently.

MyOpine

"And I am not particularly fond of having some skallywag Communist call me a liar."

First off, I didn't call you a liar. The fact that you're so fired up speaks to that possibility, however.

Skallywag? Doubtful. Communist? I laugh in your face.

Now, do you really think, with all of your fellow radical conservatives out for blood, that Pelosi would be able to hire illegals without the Bush administration sending the INS out to investigate? Doesn't pass the giggle test.

Enjoy living in loserville.

Today is a great day for you and ALL of America's enemies.
People like you helped make it possible.
The consequence will not be something anyone but the enemies of America will cheer but I hope you are around so I can remind you of the death and suffering YOU have helped cause.
I hope you feel elated because it shall be short lived.
The New Democrats by nature are habitual screwups and where lives are on the line that is not a good thing.
Come back from DailyKos as soon as you get your diaper changed but please loose the dumb act.
You claim you are unaware you are part of Democratic Socialist America? I suppose you will claim you are unaware Charles Rangle is the leader of DSA and DSA is part of the International Socialist Alliance?
And you claim you are not a Communist?
Just your leaders are Communists, not you?
Maybe you are that naive but I doubt it.
Giving honorable titles like "Progressives" is a Communist thing that no longer fools as many people as it used to.

Sowell's Visions on Target
Dr. Sowell,

I just finished reading your book The Vision of the Anointed and it is so on target with why the Democrats appeal to such a large segment of our society.

Unfortunately, millions of people don't think, especially when confronted with facts.

MyOpine = idiot

"Today is a great day for you and ALL of America's enemies...[more asinine, whiny, paranoid blather]"

If you said that to me in person you likely would never have finished your rant. You're an ignoramus, unwilling to consider the possibility that reasonable people in this country could disagree with you. For you to equate ANY Americans to our enemies says nothing about those you slander, but much about you.

Enjoy your life in loserville. Even when the Republicans regain power (which they will, as they move away from radicals like you to regain the far more numerous moderates your kind pushes away), you will remain lost. For as long as you lack the perspective to tolerate those who disagree with you, you are destined to remain on the fringe of American society.

.

Give me a break
> And, again, this is not a conservative
> position, but one based entirely upon envy.

Uh, you are wrong. It has nothing to do with envy. It has to do with not wanting to pay to protect someone else's property. In your Utopian nirvana, you would have others pay to protect the property of the very wealthy. I say have them pay for their own insurance.

And it is frankly amazing to me to hear a person claiming to be a conservative make the argument that because the groceries are cheaper, it's to my benefit that illegals come here and drive up ER costs, state taxes for schools and prisons, the extra crime, congested roads, etc. I would rather have fewer McDonalds but have my big mac costs what it really does. isn't this a cornerstone of capitalism, to get the market forces to reflect the reality?

"Same problem. For every job "outsourced", the data indicate conclusively that even more jobs are "insourced" and at higher average wage rates."

You really have been drinking the koolaid. Check out the job statistics in Silicon Valley. Wages are stagnant, high tech jobs dropped each year but one since 2001, and they are being replaced with service sector jobs. Great.

> I am pointing out that the "risk" of which you speak DOES NOT EXIST.

This is rubbish. Whenever you owe money you are at risk.

Right
"The quality (?) of your responses doesn't warrant continuing to return to this board."

I agree continuing with this discussion is pointless. You haven't addressed my points, but try to twist it to suit your orientation.

You claim to be a republican, but when confronted with the fact that illegals don't earn enough to pay for the services they consume, and that the ownership class therefore is being subsidized, you say groceries are cheaper, or that displaced workers maybe get other jobs.

When I point out that the role of the government is to protect property (I mean military, police), you say the taxes for it should not be based on the amount of property. Which means lower classes subsidize the protection costs for upper classes. Sounds communal.

At least you agree Bush tried to buy Florida, though I wish you could see he is also trying to buy the hispanic vote, and he is using my subsidies to do it.

Regarding your contention that it doesn't matter who owns the debt, I believe there have been instances in the past when foreign countries debt holdings in the US have been used to influence foreign policy. I think this was Japan during some of the export/import discussions under Bush Sr.

Running Conservative Candidates SMART
The future of our country may be at stake, but politics is still viewed as just a "game" by most. Many don't see it as relevant or affecting their lives, finances, safety, or future. How often have you heard: "I don't like politics and stay away from it..".
This attitude does not make the nasty things in life go away.

I would suggest, on this basis, the American electorate is lazy, short sighted, even stupid. Just because something "works" in the short term in no way guarantees it will work at all in the long term. Problem is, politics and voters are mainly concerned with the short term only.

Maybe this is why we have reoccuring cycles. Americans like History, mainly, American voters like to repeat history. It would be better to remember history and think about long term consequences of elections. Much wiser and smarter than just the short term, or saying "I don't like it".

Re: Thomas Sowell, our conscience!
Mr. Sowell has hit the nail right on the head!
As he intimated, it is easier to capture a half-truth in sound bite than it is to captivate the imagination of an electorate with factual detail and truth.

Allegiance to self without regard to detail always wins over dedication to something that is larger than the self, such as one's country, one's culture and heritage and one's future. To set the stage for the desired outcome Liberals need only to have a publicist, our news media, to hammer the point home, day after day!

Of course, when sheer weight of an issue requires one to see the detail, then the moment of renaissance is at hand. Usually it is too late, as it was in Viet Nam!

I have already seen a change in the approach of Liberal minds as they undertake the governance of America. Note how in recent days the media has made the veteran a victim of his own folly, with allegations of overstretched medical programs for veterans and their concern about being re-introduced into a civilian economy. This is a back-handed way of slapping the same icon of our identity, that has been so successful over the past three years. Making a victim of someone, outside your circle of friends, is a sure way to inspire a following, no matter how devious the victimizing mindset!

It has always been the ploy of the media to point out glaring and unequal application faults of unpopular programs undertaken by conservatives, AND to highlight the humanity behind similar unpopular programs supported by Liberals.

And of course if one dare call a Liberal a liar, that is considered offensive! On the other side, your name need only be Keith Olbermann, and full pardons are given!

Goebbels was right! Repeat a lie often enough and it will take on the character of truth.

Thank you Mr. Sowell for reminding us of our need to address issues with clarity and without becoming weary in our efforts!
