Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Candidates are not the only major factors in this year's elections. The media have taken a big role -- and a biased role.

The latest in a long list of examples is the way they have immediately circled the wagons around John Kerry to protect him and the Democrats from the reaction to an ill-advised remark that the Senator made at a college in California.

What was the remark? "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

That's what the man said. It's on tape so there is no basis for dispute about that. What there is a dispute about is what it meant.

One plain meaning is that, if you don't get a good education, you could end up getting sent to Iraq. This would be consistent with a disdain for the military apparent not only in Senator Kerry's voting record but also that of many other Democrats in Congress. So the Republicans grabbed that ball and ran with it.

Senator Kerry now claims that it was a "botched joke," meaning that President Bush didn't get a good education and that he has gotten the country stuck in Iraq. Even if we bend over backward to believe that Kerry didn't really mean what he said, but had simply messed up the punch line, his follow-up statement later on only made matters worse.

He said he would "apologize to no one" that if anyone would believe that "a veteran, someone like me," would "somehow criticize more than 140,000 troops serving in Iraq" then "they're crazy."

Maybe Senator Kerry has a bad memory -- or maybe he is counting on the rest of us having a bad memory. He criticized more than 140,000 troops serving in Vietnam, making sweeping and unsubstantiated accusations against them of widespread atrocities back in the 1970s.

He criticized them at home and abroad, giving aid and comfort to our enemies in wartime. That is what first got the Swift Boat veterans after him, years before he ran for President in 2004.

Regardless of whether we believe Kerry's account of his service in Vietnam or the very different accounts by many who served in the same unit with him there, military service does not confer lifetime immunity from criticism for what you do afterwards.

Benedict Arnold was a military hero during the Revolutionary War. But General Arnold changed his mind on that war, just as Senator Kerry has changed his mind on the war in Iraq -- and no one has claimed that Benedict Arnold's earlier military service made him exempt from criticism.

How is this story played in the media? The front-page headline on the San Francisco Chronicle read: "Bush, GOP seize on Kerry's Gibe to Turn Focus from War in Iraq." The Chronicle has learned well the New York Times' technique of imputing motives instead of reporting facts.

Has any Democrat ever been accused by the mainstream media of "seizing on" some statement by a Republican, much less have bad motives imputed?

This is not the first time the media have circled the wagons around Senator Kerry. Despite the fact that Kerry has shamelessly tried to exploit his military service in Vietnam decades later, Tim Russert is the only major media commentator who has ever asked him why he will not open his military records, as President Bush has done.

Kerry has said that he would, that he has, and yet to this day he has never signed the simple form that Bush signed to make the facts available to all.

What makes this all the more important in the case of Senator Kerry is that he has not only made his military service a claim to national leadership but has put his honorable discharge on his web site -- where its date, years after he left the military, raised serious question about his credibility.

The date of his honorable discharge was during the Carter Administration, when less than honorable discharges were allowed to be upgraded. But why would a military hero need that?

Except for Tim Russert, the mainstream media show no such interest in that question as they did when they relied on a forged memo to trash George W. Bush's military service. Biased? You bet.

Just say no to dope
Nice DNC spin tanabear. Perhaps that is what Kerry meant to say, perhaps not. Either way, he proves once again what a dope he is. Either because he let his elitist contempt for the military show, or his educated butt can't get a simple one-liner right. Again, either way, he is a dope.

zzzzzzzzzz

Tanabear...
Well, that just goes to show what Kerry is really thinking anyway - that the "smart" and "ambitious" people will be spared from serving in Iraq. What is he saying about our soldiers? That they are "dumb" and "lazy"? Sorry, but he can't worm his way out of this one.

BTW - Kerry is the "eloquent" speaker, and Bush is the "rough around the edges" speaker. Kerry is the "intellectual giant", and Bush is the "intellectual dummy". To my knowledge, Bush hasn't trashed or insulted anyone (except in calling terrorists "evildoers"). Kerry has made a career out of general disdain for the military - and he still has not released his military files. Bush has made his records public.

singLOUD
Yeah, Kerry, who is the master of eloquent oration - puts a major foot in his mouth and tries to wiggle his way out. Yeah, like I really accept his "apology".

People don't like Bush, I believe, partly because he is very plain and straight-spoken. Bush is not the master of oratory, but he speaks plainly and understandably. People know where he stands.

Kerry has given new meaning to the "Donkey Party", no?

Macacca or Muchacho
Yep, Kerry's speechwriters refit what he said with something that sounded plausible AFTER the FACT. And Kerry was so mortified with how bad what he said ACTUALLY sounded that he refused for OVER a DAY to make any apology or even acknowledge how bad it sounded. I hear that George Allen's speechwriters had really told him to call the little pissant that was nagging him "Muchacho" (buddy) instead of Macaca to appeal to hispanics. That IS the truth (depending on what your definition of is is).

Grant him the slip-up, he's still phony
First, I don't buy for a minute that he had everything fully written out ahead of time. His staff probably made that up after the fact so they could cover his butt. But even if he was making a joke about the president, it's funny...up until you remember that Bush got better grades at Yale than Kerry did. "Hey, kettle? Yeah, pot here. You're black." I guess if you don't do as well as Bush did in school, you have to try to marry a rich woman.

at the very least . . .
If John Kerry had this all written out (although I'd bet the written remarks were postedated just like his honorable discharge) you have to wonder where he gets the interminable gall to call Bush dumb. They've made a mantra out of the idea that Bush is an idiot. And yet he is the idiot that has handed them their hat countless times now. Just wait, if Bush and the Republicans pull this election off and maintain majority in both houses of Congress, not only will Bush be an idiot but so will the whole electorate.

Perhaps a paraphrase of Kerry's comments would be that if you make the most of a good education and work hard and learn you can be successful in this country. If not, you'll be dumb enough to elect people who hold you and your country in complete disdain - like the Democrats

Thank God for New Media
The dinosaur media actively works to bury stories like this, even though the story cannot be buried in this digital age. Compare this with Trent Lott's comments and the coverage the media meted out over it. The bias is clear to any fair-minded observer. The MSM has clearly chosen sides and their denials just don't wash anymore.

Yeah, Yeah
The point is Mr. Kerry was speaking to a "choir" audience. A liberal forum in the State of California....not that he wouldn't say the same thing in Massachusetts...but I think it WAS a botched joke. Here in lies the rub....He can't think on his feet very well, and therefore blunders with "the joke" and no sense of how it would be taken by many in this Country, who love and respect the Military men and women

I have given speeches
and have never ... ever, deviated so far from my prepared remarks, changing their meaning entirely, as John Kerry claims to have done. I don't believe for a minute that the "prepared remarks" were prepared ahead of his speech. They are post dated a*s covering, just like his honorable discharge.

But the media believes, or if they don't believe, are perfectly willing to go in the tank for him.

Kerry is a liar
How stupid does Kerry think the American public is to believe his troop bashing was meant to criticize President Bush? Didn’t he attend the same university (Yale) as President Bush? How is it that Kerry holds himself above Bush when they both attended the same school and Kerry’s GPA was lower than the President’s? Should we translate his comments to mean that Kerry himself is poorly educated?

Over and over again Democratic leaders have shown their distain for our military with outrageous comments and have contributed to destroying their reputation with the international community. Wake up, America! Think twice before voting this lot into office.

Botched joke?
Hanoi John is the living definition of a botched (and botoxed) joke. Maybe we can compromise with the libs after all on abortion and stem cell research, so long as we can make it selectively retroactive and mine his cadaver for what little value it might have.

Marxist elite
Much of the MSM (Marx's Socialist Media?) was acquired by communist elite in 1930-40s. Thus, one would expect the MSM to defend a fellow communist as Kerry and the party (Democrat) that is attempting to destroy our constitutional republic.

Benefit of the doubt...
I might have given Kerry the benefit of the doubt except for the first "apology". That if someone in the great unwashed masses couldn't see that he "was really insulting Bush" and not the troops, then "they're crazy". It tells me that he was either unable to comprehend the offense he gave, or, didn't think anyone deserved one. Neither of which puts him in my good graces.

Dogkees writes...
"Over and over again Democratic leaders have shown their distain for our military with outrageous comments and have contributed to destroying their reputation with the international community." --it isn't just the military. They are destroying this country. The controversial moral issues such as abortion, gay marriage, etc are just one piece of what they are doing.

They are aiding and abetting the enemy at every turn--divulging our military secrets, fighting to allow terrorists access to our courts, doing everything that they can to block our success in this war--and on and on.

We can't allow them to win on Tuesday.

Kerry
Is a perfect poster-child for retroactive abortion!

It's actually quite entertaining
to hear what "progressives" say when they think only the faithful are present. Kerry's remarks were clearly intended as a "laugh line" for his audience, namely the young, theoretically intelligent, and (of course) like-minded students he was addressing. It apparently never occured to him that the rest of the country might hear it, and react.
It makes you wonder what else Kerry and his ilk say- when they think the rest of us aren't listening.

cheers

eon

Medical synrome???
I've always thought there's a suggestion of a genetic abnormality barely hiding in Kerry: note the lack of cheek bones (hence the down-sloping eyes,) the long chin and head (acromegaly-like,) the unusually flat affect that emanates from his eyes, and the gawky gait. As he wind-surfs, one can see he's not a man attractively shaped. And there's a lack of expressiveness in his facial muscles...though that could be partly because of Botox.

Yet somewhere along the way he came to consider himself a model of beauty, intelligence, vocal suavity, and charm. At least 2 women have agreed with that, other than his mom. And a whole lot of Americans could entertain the idea of him as leader of our country. Astonishing.

The NYT misquote:
The NYT ADDED a little phrase to their quote of Kerry. At the end of his utterance they added, "Ask Pres. Bush." Kerry never said that. Once again the NYT lies in favor of Dems.

So Green Day,
Are you saying Kerry really is an okay guy, but Allen is not? Not too logical, I'd say.

RE my previous post
When I said Kerry intended this as a "laugh linE", I did not mean it was intended as a joke- which it clearly is not. Rather, I meant that he was inviting his audience to join him in looking down his patrician nose at anyone in uniform. Which is, of course, SOP with the left.
I aplogize if I inadvertently offended anyone. My poor phraseology is leaving me felling embarassed at this moment. Sorry about that.

sincerely

Best Line
...." I wonder if John Kerry will apply for a Purple Heart for shooting himself in the foot?!"

..........................Rush Limbaugh

Right as usual
Did they ever circle the wagons. I was blown away that CNN actually ran a special report on "What John Kerry Really Meant" full of all kinds of excuses for what he said, concluding with the remark "Let's hope this is forgotten by tommorrow." Talk about blatant bias! Can you imagine CNN running a "What George Allen Really Meant" report, complete with a totally rewritten speech of "what he meant" to make him look better? I guess they realize everybody knows about their bias now, so they don't even bother pretending.

Kerry's presidential aspirations vanish
And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. As all of you are aware, Kerry has a history of disparaging our military. The initial reaction of the mainstream media was one of consternation over the furor the Kerry comment caused. Since they themselves view our military in the same light as does Kerry, they were perplexed by the reaction of Americans. Kerry and MSM share an elitist condescension toward the military and middle America.

Trent Lott, by comparison...
Hmm, let's see...after Strom's 100th b-day party, did Katie Couric ever say "I can't imagine that Trent Lott meant to express advocacy for racial segregation?"

Her choice of words - "imagine" - belies the liberal media's M.O. Their entire WORLD is one of imagination, a place of fantasy where "good and bad in everyone" is nonsense - and one finds a clean division between thoroughly good liberals, and thoroughly evil conservatives. It's Orwell's Animal Farm, with the conservatives on two legs.

So Katie can easily imagine that Lott wants the white only lunch counter back - and does so without trying. But, despite far more evidence to support the possibility, cannot imagine Kerry running down the troops.

Kim....
Did you gather that collection of links yourself or were they already packaged in the email you recieved from moveon.org?

Kimberly
Kerry and the Democrats aided and abetted the Communists during the Vietnam AND the Cold Wars.

Now they (and you) are aiding and abetting the Islamo-Fascists.

You can try to spin all you want but those are the facts. Read the Venona Papers.

kimberly
I'm surprised you can count to 10.

kimberly
I'm sorry, I rushed to judgement. You missed #5.

Exactly What Liberals Think
I have a very liberal friend who has expressed to me exactly what Kerry said. He has told me in the past that because of this terrible economy (what an idiot), the only choice poor students have is to join the military. He feels the vast majority in the military are stupid people with no options. Is it so hard to believe that Kerry meant exactly what he said?

Also, if this really came from a prepared text, what took so long to release it? Any rational person would have reacted immediately with the proof of the mistake and produced it for all. What took so long was Kerry's people trying to figure out how to shape this. It would never have taken so long if they had a prepared text.

One last time to Kimberly, look up the definition of the word "lie." It is the INTENTIONAL mistatement of facts. First of all, everyone agreed on the "facts" of WMD. Even the liberals were pushing it in 1998. How did Bush manipulate them 2 years before he was elected? So what Bush stated, everyone on both sides of the aisle agreed with. So according to your definition, they all "lied." Take your emotion out of this and start thinking. That started my conversion from liberal to staunch conservative.

Not "mainstream"
How did they EVER get the name "mainstream"? There's nothing "mainstream" about the media. They are, always have been, and always will be, LEFTstream media.

Pogue_Mahone - right on about Kimberly
I'm telling you all - Kimberly is nothing but a plant - she is not an "honest" poster here. It's one thing to post dissenting comments and have a normal give and take. Thats not what Kimberly is. She/He is a plant to disrupt this site. As such, I urge everyone to simply ignore the posts by that entity.

Kimberly - I can't resist...
So Bush is "wreckless," huh? You mean, he's never had a car accident?? Hmmm...

You're usually a pretty good speller, even though your thoughts and writings and rantings/ravings are somewhat suspect.

But please..."WRECKLESS"??

Always scroll past
HappiR -- Just so you know, I've been scrolling past Kimbery's rants for months now. I also skip Tanabear, Left Angle, and other lefties. I just can't stand their tired arguments anymore.

I will be helping the old ladies at the polling station on Tuesday, and won't be done until approx. 9:00 PM. I won't know the outcome until I get home. Like 2004, I hope it's a surprise for the Liberal Media. Played happy music for the next 2 days, and got on my knees and thanked God.

Re: Kimberly-babe
Of course she's a plant! She gets her points from moveon.org and dailyKos, etc.

When I peruse her cut-and-paste "opinions", I always try to picture her sitting at her keyboard wearing the flimsiest negligee (or less), looking like the hottest Playmate EVER!

Unfortunately, she's probably 50-something, overweight, a former hippie from the 1960's, and long past her prime (if she ever had one).

I know the above is agumentum ad hominem, but it's useless to try to engage Kim-baby in rational discourse.

Botched joke or not
He should have apologized immediately. He knew what he said, after he said it, and he could have corrected it then. Afterword, he refused to apologize. He still hasn't. His "apology" was much like Durbin's--he is sorry that you may have misunderstood or been offended. Sounds like a literary form that implies that you (the listener) is the stupid one. He doesn't regret what he said.

wreckless...a quick look
Persnickety, Kimberly was just stating the facts. Compared to Ted "Chapaquidick" Kennedy and Patrick "high on meds" Kennedy, who are certainly not WRECKLESS, GW Bush is wreckless.

Re: Kimberly
Give the devil his or her due, she has succeeded once again in making the discussion all about her.

OK KathyB,,, Back to Kerry
I hope it does not lessen your opinion of Kerry to know that he as approached the families of fallen soldiers at their sons' funerals to seek their help in undermining the war on terror.
(Cybercast News Service, 10-01-06)

Kimberly is a Radical Activist.
Wonder if she demonstrates at military funerals?

Kerry Comment
Kerry's statement was exact and precise. He is a front for the "Party of Clinton". Hilary has no interest in seeing Democrats take the House or Senate. Either would make her election in '08, exponentionally mor difficult. Hilary used Kerry to sabotage the so-called momentum of Dems in this election. The one thing we should have learned by now is that everything is always about the Clinton's. Look for the emergence of another third party candidate in 2008, to siphon away Republican votes. Hilary cannot win, as Bill couldn't without a third party candidate. And the foolishness associated with Dem control in Congress won't help her either. Prepare yourselves. The week after next will start the All-Hillary, All-The-Time show, non-stop till Nov, 08.

Hey, Kimberly

Pogue Mahone

No surprise
Nobody should be shocked by Kerry's comments. If you examine his activities over the past thirty-five years, you'll find he has made asuccessful career of betraying and disparaging the military (and his country).
Ask yourself why over 200 honorable men who served with him during his - admittedly abbreviated - tour in RVN felt that he was a traitorous SOB.

davdav
I agree that between November 2006 and November 2008, the Socialists will try to start a third-party of NeoRepublicans who normally would vote straight GOP but have been turned off by Bush's stance on illegals and spending.

Hillary is a political animal and she saw the effect Ross Perot's party had on the Republicans in 1992. Bill Clinton only got 43% of the popular vote, but took the election. That means that 57% of the electorate wanted SOMEONE ELSE other than Slick Willie as POTUS!

That fact is not lost on Hillary. It's the ONLY way for the Socialist-Democrats to win in '08.

Response to "cookie"
I don't know how you can have a liberal as a true friend, I no longer believe it's possible. I will say I believe liberals are people who can't think rationally and have a basic underlying hatred toward others.
Your "friend" wants to exterminate conservatives.

Media people think they are better
The problem with the media is they are part of the group that thinks of themselves as first-class citizens. They were produced by the liberals like a product on an assembly line. They are incapable of independent thought.
The rest of this posting is verbatim from a posting I just made to another townhall writer on the same subject.

I think the "joke" was never intended as anything but a serious commentary. I think it
reflects a very perturbing paradigm among liberals that rarely gets mentioned and yet is the
underlying support for much of our present cultural disarray.
Kerry's remark underscores two things our society has mistakenly accepted with severe
consequences. This belief system has substantially undermined both our economy and our
ability to live together as one nation for decades.
First errror is the underlying assumption that the purpose of education is to get people out of
having to work and that consequently work is only for the uneducated. This is why we live
in a country that has to import everything. We are no longer capable of producing anything
and have a nation of paper-shufflers at the top. Workers are at the bottom in every sense,
which is why it's so difficult to find a competent mechanic to fix your car, a civilized
waitress or an honest and able person to fix anything in your house.
We have a severe shortage of good workers because, as a country, culturally, we have lost
respect for working people. Liberals have contempt for the workingman, even though they
have the union bosses support. If the goal of our economic lives is for all of us to do anything
we can to evade work, then we will eventually end up in caves. Temporarily, of course, we
will have a flood of college graduates with sociology majors and the like, while suffering
from a shortage of engineers, medical practitioners and other doers.
Secondly, the paradigm ascribes lower status - less humanness - to the "uneducated." This is
exactly how liberals think. They truly believe you are less of a person if you don't have a
college degree. There no longer is respect for the individual person or judging of the merit of
a man's words and actions. This is the platform for how the liberals have taken over society,
from Wall Street to the schools. They have decreed first-class citizen status among
themselves - the college people - and lower status to the working people. What ever
happened to the America embraced in the poet Walt Whitman's words, "I hear America
singing.?" Today, we live in a divided nation of Kerry's kind with its ego bloat and the
people who are locked into low-paying jobs by this "education" bigotry.
The liberals have in fact contributed enormously to the growing gap between the haves and
have-nots that they always decry. But, that's no surprise. Us everyday working people see
this in our jobs daily. There's always the lazy, dishonest person who causes work build-up by
not doing his share and then, when the manager is present, makes himself out to be the hero
who gets the job done. A job that would not have existed had he not caused the problem.
That's the philosophy and mechanics of the Democrats in a nutshell.

Hitler Did What John Kerry Said
Following Max Schmeling's defeat in the ring by boxer Joe Lewis in 1938,Hitler sent Max Schmeling for military duty as a paratrooper. He got stuck on the front lines.

In Nazi Germany,if you were not producing, you were either sent to a concentration camp or the military.

By analogy,if you are not a "good student" in Kerry's world, you are a candidate for military duty in Iraq.

Kerry's attitude
If you couple Kerry's comments today with his previous ~1971 comments, you see another pattern.

-1970's: A volunteer army would be an army of the black, the brown, the poor.
-today: The army is stupid.

Does this mean that, in Kerry's opinion, that the black, the brown, the poor are stupid, or don't make an effort to be smart????

Desperate media
,It's interesting to see that with the media so blatantly biased against conservatives how many conservatives are elected to office. In this election, the bias is the worst I can recall. We'll see if the medias desperation pays off.

Kimberly
Step away from politics for just a second and take a commonsense look at this.

If Kerry truly and accidently dropped a few words from his written speech, and by doing so, slammed a couple million Americans, don't you think his immediate response would be to apologize?

Instead, we got "I apologize to no one!"...and then after 3 days, 6 excuses, and endless phone calls by the liberal gods, he POSTED an extremely weak version of an apology.

Commonsense should tell you what happened here.

Kimberly-babe,
Au contraire, fair one!

You posted that I "never bring much to the table except extreme bias."

"Extreme bias" in the defense of liberty is no vice. I admit to being biased toward the Republicans (as opposed to the Socialist-Democrats).

I also bring my bias toward the US military, as a veteran of the longest war we ever fought in, which is the most powerful and effective military organization ever brought to any battlefield.

I'm biased when it comes to the free-market capitalist system that made the USA the best and strongest country in the planet.

I'm also biased AGAINST the Marxist socialists who would ruin/destroy all the organizations I'm biased FOR, including the NRA.

Mostly I'm biased FOR freedom, which the socialists would deny me by making the federal government the arbiter of everything.

America doesn't need Comrade Reid and Comradette Pelosi to control our lives. We've done well on our own, thank you.

Those, Kim-babe, are just some of my "extreme biases". I'll continue to bring them to the table on a big platter (one that doesn't belong to the government).

P.S.: What are you wearing . . .?

...Kimberly
DavidMac,

I'm a virgin to this whole blogging thing - in fact, this is my very first ever. And what is it that made me dive in to the deep end you ask? I would like to say that it was my delight in knowing that there are more sources for truthful news than just AM talk radio... or that my two cents worth of opinion would add to the common sense of what Mr. Sowell has to say... but, sadly, no. What really has me blogging is the seed you planted in my head about Kimberly. Could she really be hot, or do you think she's just like the loathsome (and loathing) fema-nazis I was surrounded by at the State University years ago?

Kimberly
I would respond, but alas, I am far too preoccupied with cross-burning, stealing from the poor, spilling blood for oil and other pastimes of us evil conservatives. However, I must concur with DavidMac, and inquire as to what you are wearing, as I do admire a girl with moxie.

Response to "Skater"
OK, I tolerate him.

DavidMac & Snot!
Now you stop it, kids!! We'll have no sexual harassment lawsuits against Townhall et al!!

Try a cold shower.

jcthomasva...
Don't make me come up there!

Botched joke
John Kerry walks into a bar. The bartender looks at him and says, "Why the long face?"

Don't bother kimberly, most of...
...the military, and former military, knows who loves and respects us, and who doesn't. It's not in your power to fool us, and you look as ridiculous as kerry 'trying.'

It amazes me how condenscending and clueless you(or yall, including Kerry and Murtha) are about what motivates voluntary military types one way or the other. You make the mistake of falling for your own propaganda and simplistic characatures.

God Bless Thomas Sowell, he's given me decades of good reading, knowledge, and sound logic. He's gotta be getting on up there(about my dad's age), I hope and pray he gives us decades more.

Hanoi John reincarnated (in appearance)
Do you believe in reincarnation?

Think "John Kerry" ... "Herman Munster" ...
Now, is that scary, or what?

The most gratifying part of our discourse on this site is that most respondents write as literate individuals. We seem to be able to spell, assemble intelligent sentences and paragraphs, and punctuate them with relative correctness. Compare that to the crude and often vulgar ravings of our opposition.

Kimberly and her double standards...
Kimberly,

How long did the Dims and the MSM go on regarding Trent Lott's comments? Or more recently regarding George Allen's comments? Or about the Foley "scandal"?

If you don't truly see your hypocritical double standard, there is really no hope for you. I truly feel sorry for you.

Snot . . .
I don't actually KNOW that Kimberly is a really hot babe. I can fantasize that she is. It makes posting more palatable, sometimes.

I visualize Kimberly as a tall (5'-10" or more, because I'm 6'-5"), about 145 pounds (I hate skinny women), long silky-blonde hair, kind of Scandanavian. No tats or piercings, though. Bra size = 38-D (minimum) and usually dresses in short skirts/cut-off jeans, tight T-shirt.

When she posts, she's in a negligee (or less); maybe in a towel if she just took a shower.

That's fantasy and, just maybe (if the Gods are smiling), reality.

P.S.: Polly, extremism in fantasizing about women is no vice.

Not "mainstream"
How did they EVER get the name "mainstream"? There's nothing "mainstream" about the media. They are, always have been, and always will be, LEFTstream media.
-unsnip-

Well, they stand in their studios and editorial offices and conference rooms and say "We are the center. We are the middle. We are the mainstream! We're objective and unbiased. What we believe is the consensus of what everyone would believe if they were as well-informed and intelligent as us. Everybody else is either to the right or to the left of us!"

Then they actually look around them. To the right is a vast multitude of ordinary citizens going about their business day in and day out. There are some nutjobs to be sure, but they're few and way off on the horizon past a sea of average folks. To the left, hmm, some career politicians, college profs and administrators, wild-eyed signcarrying rock throwers, whining professional victims, a small group of trust fund kiddies, and the communists, with the mummies of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao all too close. Not nearly so many people over that way.

They realize: something's not right! Something's out of balance!

Then the truth hits them: all those ignorant rubes on their right need to be indoctrinated and convinced that WE the established pop media represent the consensus and the mainstream. We must employ the herd instinct to condition them to shift their perspectives and viewpoints our way, on pain of being considered oddballs and kooks by us, and our sophisticated worldly friends and allies. That would set things right.

So now I have explained all, and you have been enlightened. Don't thank me, it was nuthin'

Extremism in fantasizing about women may be no vice but if it makes me spew iced tea through my nose all over my keyboard, it's just not nice.

It also made my eyes water.

It might even have made my day.

You KNOW Kim won't like THAT!

"Botched joke
John Kerry walks into a bar. The bartender looks at him and says, "Why the long face?"

(and yes, I read them all and no I don't know why)

I must say Thomas Sowell has ya'll finger dancin' again :o)

Good night, sleep tight...

Vote!

DavidMac: Re: Kimberly's looks
Hey, I resemble those remarks too. 50 something, overweight (albeit not by TOOOOO much), long past my prime too. Hey, 3 outta 4 ain't bad. I never could figure out the hippie thing.

Kimberly: Re: WH disrespect
Kim,

Actually, Bush didn't lie. He may have acted on bad information, but he didn't lie. Still finding WMD's, and today's NYT story about pulling a website that had Iraqi documents telling of how close they were to producing nukes, sarin and sabun gas. It wasn't a lie then, it ain't a lie now.

People miscalculated on how long we would be their, and it took time to ramp up production for body armor and up-armored vehicles. A screw up of huge proportions that belongs to yep, the WH, Congress and the military.

Congress gave the pay raises, not the WH. In fact, the WH can't spend squat without OK from Congress.

The joke was made on purpose, done as a joke as he had done at the correspondants dinner year after year. In poor taste? Maybe, depending on your sense of humor. Republicans can laugh at themselves. Dems get all upset when it happens to them.

Torture doesn't put our troops in any more danger than they already are. If captured, regardless of how we treat enemy combatants.

Volleying ignorant "outrage"? Ignorant, I think not. I am retired military. Served during Nam, Desert Storm 1 and 2. Most people I knew or served with were highly intelligent. Many senior non-commissioned officers I knew had their Bachelors, some had or were working on their Masters and a few had PhD's. I have no respect for Kerry, and even less for the people who keep re-electing him and his bumbling sidekick. I took it personally, as a slam against my brothers and sisters-in-arms.

Had he immediately come out with an apology, a genuine one, not some half-assd self-serving statement, then it would have been over in a day. It wasn't until he became toxic even to his own party, got beaten over the head until it sank in that he even came out.

You're right, it is tragic, tragic that a sitting Senator would denigrate the very institution that enables him to say such shallow, foolish and belittling things by keeping his, and our, First Amendment rights intact.

Give Me the Ability to Ignore !!!
Kimberly, tanabear, donaldd, and a few others are prime examples of why I want Townhall to give me the ability to selectively ignore certain posters. Sure I can scroll past their idiocies but only after I've wasted precious time to download it. Other forums include "Ignore this user" links; why can't Townhall?

Sorry to disappoint....

... but Kimberly, aka "Drive-By Kim", is really Karl Rove - who posts the left's talking points to keep us all fired up and ready to get out the vote!

I mean, c'mon! I know some really staunch liberals, but even the worst of them aren't as intellectually dishonest as our Kimmy here.

Yep... you've got to hand it to Kim/Karl for another stroke of genius!

All hail Darth Rove!!!

Oh... and Kim?
Just to keep things fair here, I've got a few links for you to try out, maybe get some facts:

"Bush did not lie." (www.georgewbush.com)
"Haliburton did nothing wrong" (www.haliburton.com)
"No miltary benefit cuts" (www.usmilitary.gov)
"John Kerry loves our soldiers" (www.swiftboatsfor truth.org)

(Sarcasm alert - my fellow conservatives!)

But somehow, I don't think Kimmy will be amused...

I'll "apologize" to her on Sunday - or maybe Monday.

Poster-child?
"Kerry Is a perfect poster-child for retroactive abortion!"

Well, they shoved through "Partial Birth Abortion" upon us, why not "After Birth Abortion"?

WHAT A JOKE
As usual, Thomas Sowell is absolutely on target.

And I will repeat: Kerry (I despise typing those letters together) may have been an officer, but, sir, he is no gentleman. It's too late for him. Ever.

Kerry would be a magnificent
test rat for the 'decades after pill'.

Kerry's instincts

giving Kerry the benefit of the doubt (which as Dr. Sowell indicates, Kerry does not deserve), we can assume that kerry did not mean the words he used.

The words kerry used are hurtful. And he is a national political figure. The words used by him have damaged a very important institution, the one where young men and women risk their lives to protect us. Young men and women also put careers at risk by using critical young years in the service, serving us.

When I do something that damages someone, I apologize as soon as I realized the mistake I have made. I don't need my colleagues to tell me I need to, I realize it and do it. That's what an apology is for: fixing a hurt when you didn't mean to do it, or when you regret doing it.

Kerry's actions tell me a lot about him. His apology only came after he realized it would cost him more not to make it. Probably because his political allies told him to get on with it or they would pull support.
