Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A long-standing joke at election time is that if someone were to run under the name "None of the above," that candidate would win. This year, the Democrats are running as "None of the above" and polls show that they may well win the House of Representatives and perhaps the Senate.

Can we afford to have Congress controlled by people who refuse to discuss their own record or agenda, at a time when a nuclear Iran and a nuclear North Korea loom over our future and over the future of our children and grandchildren?

Some clever people say that Democrats will have two years in which to discredit themselves in Congress before the 2008 elections. But clever people have led many nations into catastrophes. Is this the time to experiment with "None of the above"?

Who are the Democrats who will take over key Congressional committees affecting the destiny of this nation if their party wins the House of Representatives?

Do we really want Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, who was impeached as a federal judge and removed from the bench due to charges of accepting bribes, put in charge of a committee handling top secret national intelligence?

Do we really want far-left Congressman Dennis Kucinich to be chairman of the subcommittee on national security?

This is the same Dennis Kucinich who once introduced a bill "to abolish all nuclear weapons," who has refused to condemn Hezbollah terrorists, calling instead for us to have a "recognition that connects us to a common humanity and from that draw a flicker of hope to enkindle the warm glow of peace." Poetic but dumb.

Do we really want John Conyers to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, when he has already indicated that he wants to use that position to impeach the President -- which is to say, to absorb endless hours of White House staff time answering his charges instead of spending those hours dealing with one of the most dangerous international situations ever faced by this nation?

Then there is Congressman Charles Rangel, who has favored tax increases time and again and bitterly denounced tax reductions equally as often and as loudly. He would become chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, in charge of tax legislation, if the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives.

On the Senate side, do we really want Senator Pat Leahy to become chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he and Ted Kennedy pioneered the techniques of character assassination of judicial nominees known as "Borking"?

The only judges who could get confirmed under Leahy's chairmanship would be the kind of judges who will create new "rights" out of thin air for terrorists, as they have created new "rights" out of thin air for criminals, and who would impose gay marriage on the country, regardless of what the people or their elected representatives want.

Legendary House Speaker Tip O'Neill once said that all politics is local politics. Yes and no.

In one sense, there are hundreds of local elections for Congress, rather than a national election. But the consequences of these local elections will be national and lasting, especially as regards the confirmation of federal judges who will have lifetime appointments.

Even voting for a moderate Democrat like Harold Ford in Tennessee for the Senate can mean putting extremists like Ted Kennedy and Pat Leahy in charge of the Senate and liberal activist judges on the bench for decades to come.

Voting for a moderate Democrat for the House of Representatives can mean putting extremists like Nancy Pelosi, Dennis Kucinich, and Charles Rangel in charge of the House, where all spending bills and all impeachment bills originate.

Some people are justifiably angry at some of the Republicans in Washington. But voting to vent your emotions will have national and long-lasting consequences, both through lifetime judicial appointments and through the prospect of seeing the United States denied the resources needed to fight international terrorists at a time when our future and our children's future are on the line as never before.

None of the above is the only answer
As a middle class American, I realize Republicans (nor democrats) are my friend. Republicans want to dismantle the ladder of opportunity, enshrining their upper class friends in a class structure similar to the British. Sorry, but I don't want my kids to be the servants of George Bush and his friends. The Democrats are the same, wanting to use the state as the instrument instead.

I want the Lincoln republicans back. Those who are willing to fight for freedom.

None of the Above...
...SHOULD be on all ballots with the further provision that any candidate receiving fewer votes than 'None of the Above' is thereby disqualified for all future elections. What's that I hear in the back of the room? Running out of candidates? That's called progress.

Donaldd
Tax cuts cause reductions in government revenues? On what planet? It cannot be supported by any historical data. In fact, the opposite happens without fail. Every time tax rates on income were reduced, government revenues actually increased. I realize that to the uninitiated this seems counterintuitive, but the economy is dynamic not static. Your statement is based on the premise that the economy is a zero sum system, which is erroneous. When the government lets citizens keep more of the money they earn, that money is spent or invested which powers the growth of the economy. Economists use a term called the velocity of money to describe this phenomenon, but it takes more than six working brain cells to comprehend, so I won't waste your time.

Tanna, what do the forged documents ...
...matter when other sources have shown that Iraq did in fact try to buy yellowcake from Niger? Any theories on how President Bush altered our intel to fool the last administration and most of the dems in congress while he was still Governor of Texas?

If we are in a frying pan as you claim, then how is jumping into the fire a sane alternative, much less an improvement? In all your complaints with tthe GOP, via President Bush, not one of them is better addressed by the DP. Sounds like the dems think we are as dumb and emotion ruled as they are. They'd better start warming up their 'we wuz robbed' routine(oh wait, they already have), 'cause I suspect they will need it again.

I, and a lot of people just like me will take the time to vote as we always do(we'd do it for no other reason than because we can), and I'm voting for the party most likely to keep sticking it to the terrorists and their sponsors(by fair means or foul), keep my taxes the lowest, and the most likely to appoint and confirm strict constructionist judges to secure my individual rights (spare me the inane blather of my supposed 'right' to talk to a known AQ operative wherever or whenever) and their inseperable individual responsibilities. The GOP is still that party, and the alternative is still insane and hostile to almost everything I hold dear.

Democracy Means Compromise
Those of you who are mad at Republicans must understand that in order to accomplish anything, they must compromise. And Democrats in my memory have never been more left-wing than now. So it should not be surprising that the compromises are mind-boggling.

You are not going to make President Bush more hard-line on the borders if you give him a Democrat legislature. You are not going to make Republicans spend less if you give Democrats the majority in both houses.

It might have been fun in the short term to watch the Republican majority ride roughshod over the Democrats, but slow and steady wins the race. We cannot turn back 50 years of stupidity overnight.

"Poetic but dumb."
That describes a minority of Dem politicians. The majority of them just aren't poetic.

Symbolic Characteristics

Smartest Man In America
I've heard Dr. Sowell described as "the smartest man in America". It tessl you how bad the Republicans are when the smartest man in America cannot come with a single reason to vote FOR a Republican. The best he can do is to say that the Democrats will be worse.

Is that the best America can do? Is that the only choice we have left in this nation? The choice between the wicked Republican and the evil Democrats? If it is, then it's time to shut up shop & dissolve this nation.

Personally, I don't believe that's the case. I believe that America can do better than the crop of vile and loathsome politicians who are running for office. Personally, I believe that there are good people in this country who can give us a reason to support them -- not just to cast a vote against their opponent.

But I don't think we're going to be offered acceptable candidates -- much less good candidates, until we change our voting habits. As long as we are willing to accept a situation where the smartest man in America cannot find a single reason to vote FOR any candidate running for office, we'll continue to have elect the dregs of society.

In order to bring about change, WE must change. We must refuse to vote against candidates or parties. If any candidate or party wants our vote, then make it earn our vote. A ballot cast against a candidate instead of for a candidate is a ballot thrown away.

Now is the time to start -- with this election. Yes, it means some painful times ahead. But every election will present the same dilemma. And every election that passes without change makes matters worse.

Remember, a vote cast merely to keep Democrats out of office is defeatism. It's an admission that you don't believe that America can do better. If you have faith in this nation -- if you believe that we can produce leaders worthy of support, you'll only vote FOR those who have earned it. Otherwise, it really is time to shuit up shop on what was once the greatest nation in human history.

Dr. Sowell
I have one word for you on the 2008 presidential election:

Run.

Our country needs a leader who has a sense of history, understands economics, and can think things all the way through. The biggest problem with our current leader is that he generally has the right idea of where we need to go, but can't see it all the way through and come up with an integrated approach to our nation's problems.

You'd have my vote.

How weak
Donaldd writes: The shift to fee based income could produce an increase in revenue for the most used government services. More often than not those most used services are needed and fees paid for by low income families. Lower tax for the Rich raise fees (taxes) to low income workers.

Increased tax burden on expatriots working over seas who were exempt from tax cuts and received pay increases. Those thousands of Contractor employees in Iraq.

The greatest factor in Government Revenues is wages which increase annually. When you earn more you pay more no matter the tax percentage.

-----------------------------------------------------

Wages = income.

When unemployment is low more wages are paid, more taxes are collected on those wages.

----------------------------------------------------

As for the deficit, as a percentage of GNP it’s about half what it was 30 year ago. The current budget deficits are at a similar level that they were under Clinton - his administration just lied about how high they were. Back in December 2000 the Clinton adminstration released this statement:

In FYs 1998, 1999, and 2000, the debt held by the public was reduced by $363 billion. The U.S. government is projected to pay down an additional $237 billion in debt held by the public this fiscal year alone (FY 2001). That will bring the total debt pay-down to $600 billion—the largest four-year debt pay-down in American history.

http://clinton4.nara.gov/WH/new/html/Fri_Dec_29_151111_2000.html

When facts rolled in it was found that instead of a BUDGET SURPLUS for those years that paid down the national debtthe reverse actually happened. The National Debt INCREASED nearly 500 BILLION, nearly a trillion shift in financial position.

"The Clinton administration reported a surplus of $559 billion in its final four budget years. The audited numbers showed a deficit of $484 billion."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-08-02-deficit-usat_x.htm

And some idiots still claim that there was a surplus at the end of Slick's adminstration.

Most conservatives were liberal until they got their first (non-government) paycheck.

Donaldd
You must have been sleeping during Econ 101. When taxes are cut, that money doesn't go under people’s mattresses. That money goes to work in the economy as capital for investment, spending by consumers and the occasional rich person running a business that wants to expand and hire more employees. Increased economic activity raises taxable revenue, which raises taxes collected by the government. I guess you could just cut out the people in the middle to get the government more money but they would just waste it anyway and nobody is the better for it.

Skater
The blogs are best. Instapundit, and powerline.

I raised two sons in liberal California - through public schools. Both are out of college now, and both transformed from budding liberals into Conservatives. I did not have to preach to them, they could see for themselves the hypocrisy and lies from the left.

Ask any liberal why rent is so high in a rent-controlled city. Then ask him why jobs are so scarce where a Living Wage is required.

Hastings
The question is not whether we want this yahoo on the intelligence committee. The question is why did we elect an official who had been taking bribes from criminals when he was a judge.

illegal aliens...
It's the Democrat party that wants to give illegal aliens the right to vote - not the Republicans. Thus, voting Republican is by far the lesser of two evils.

The Libertarian Wing
Cinderella, hey my daughter dressed up as you the other night...good luck!

If you're a GenXer like me, our parents' and grandparents' generations advocated for increased government involvement in virtually every aspect of the life of the citizen. Following this, the stakes have become higher, the vitriol more bitter, and the threats more intense in every election cycle. This trend appears to be irreversible, barring some unimaginable scaling back of the federal government.

Greater numbers are dependent on government support, while even worse, so many believe they are daily dependent on government intervention (the minimum wage issue, push for socialized health care) that they frighten Republican tacticians into triangulation strategies. The socialism advocated by Republicans is extremely demoralizing for those in the libertarian wing.

I also don't think it speaks well for the Republic to see that one of the most affluent areas of the country is the area around Washington DC--the political center should not consolidate a disproportionate amount of economic power.

Democratic Control
I am a Republican candidate for the state legislature in an overwhelmingly Democratic district. The local paper, supposedly Republican, endorsed the Democratic incumbent because she works hard and shows up at meetings. There was no discussion about political philosophies, what she's accomplished in her last two terms (not a lot, despite a Democrat controlled General Assembly), and there was no consideration about what will happen if there's a Democrat executive who won't veto bad bills the way the Republican governor did.

This from a supposedly well-informed media.

Tanbar logic
If I give you a knife will you cut off your nose to spite your face?

Singing to the choir
Once more I am reading conservatives telling each other to vote. The problem isn't us, the problem is the opposition. The Democrats grow opposition to us by the minute. They take money out of our paychecks to pay the worst people in our society to reproduce to buy votes from that rapidly escalating group. They take over our schools, where students are given magazines like the socialist "Newsweek" to read. Students are indoctrinated by union Democrat school teachers who have subverted public education into a recruitment tool for the Democratic Party. Thus, during the years when a person's political, social and economic philosophies are formed for life they are being molded by liberalism.
It's almost like the only thing we manufacture in the United States anymore are Democrats, we import everything else.
It's time for us to reach out and recruit. If we want things to improve, we have to find a way to reach people who are open-minded and unsure or temporarily liberal. We can't continue to sing to the choir or vent when we are upset. We need to accomplish something.
It has to be done politely, with accuracy and truth, not using the name-calling and attacking methods of the liberals. I would love to see Mr Sowell be a guest on Oprah Winfrey's show, where he could reach millions of mostly liberals. She held a sortof "townhall" on TV recently, with that loudmouth from FOX as her guest. The audience was superb, it included people who could think rationally and speak fluent English, truly rarities in American society today. They begged that TV talking head to do what I am asking everyone to do: express yourself pleasantly and get the substance of the message out. Unfortunately, people who read only read their own. We need to reach and convert the opposition - and they are either watching TV or languishing somwhere.
Mr Sowell said :"Do we really want Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, who was impeached as a federal judge and removed from the bench due to charges of accepting bribes, put in charge of a committee handling top secret national intelligence?"
That comment should be the headline on the New York Times front page. Get the message out to the liberals. The media sure gets out the messages about the conservative scandals, I heard all about the Foley incident. How come I never heard of Alcee L Hastings until now?
This is what we have to work on, does anyone have any ideas?

Pissed
I am pissed off at the Republicans. They have squandered billions of dollars, have refused to do anything about illegal immigration and have basically abused the trust we put in them when they were elected.

I think articles like this one are ridiculous, but so perfect. They perfectly capture the stupidity that American politics has become. Vote for this guy, because if you vote for the other guy, things will be even worse. Gosh, lose two toes or lose the whole foot....hmmmm....really gets me excited about going to the polling booth.

Using the primaries doesn't work. How many times have you actually had viable alternate candidates with a long-term incumbent running? Repubs/Demos are not stupid, they are going to dance with the one with power. You actually have to change the party.

Whoever wins let's all make sure that the US Postal Service is deluged with deliveries to 20515 and 20500. Put so much pressure on these egomaniacs that they have either do what we, The People, want, or they fold and walk away from politics.

Yuzzi:
You must be a liberal. You hit the wrong key just like a liberal does at the polls.

Tanabear:
"S--t happens". Get over it! But thats not a feasible reason to throw out your values and ideals.

Tanabear's comments
You write, “Would we want someone in power who did not believe in enforcing our immigration laws after 911?” What do the Democrats stand for? Most of them come out strongly and publicly against border security. Some have even advocated voting rights, welfare benefits, social security benefits, home loan assistance to ILLEGAL immigrants!

You write, “Would we want a group of people who used forged documents and lies to build a case for war? Can these people be trusted with our intelligence in the future?” Ask yourself which party gutted out intelligence budgets year after year, forcing us to rely on faulty information on crucial national security decisions. Ask yourself who created the ‘wall’ between intelligence & law enforcement that limited our ability to detect 9-11

You write, “Would we want someone who did not believe in the racial profiling of Arabs at airports after 911?” Do you honestly believe the Democrats would be BETTER in this respect?

On every issue you name, the Democrats come out even further to the left than the view that you apparently espouse. Why would you ever let them gain control.

Yes, the Republicans spend MUCH more than I’d like, but the Democrats wanted to spend even more.

On issues of Judicial Selection, Tax Policy, Economy (which is doing great), Social Security Reform, School vouchers, etc., the Republicans come out much, much better than Democrats.

VOTE:
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO FOR GOD, FAMILY AND COUNTRY

IS TO VOTE!!!

Not just when you have the time to do it, but at every opportunity that is given to you to do it.

If you do not vote, you are leaving your, and your families, fate in the hands of others. A low turnout on Election Day means that a fervent, well organized minority point of view can easily win and push this nation in a direction it might not want to go. The Iraqi people recognized this when 12 million people (almost 80% of the registered voters) faced threats of death from just such a fervent “terrorist” group and voted for democracy; a concept they didn’t quite understand but knew that its liberties would be far better than the tyranny that such a minority group would establish, given the chance.

So when you vote, make sure you know for what you are voting, and the repercussions that might result from an uninformed decision. Find time to study the issues and be committed to them before you choose. Know what groups have opinions and beliefs similar to yours and see what their recommendations on the issues are. Conversely, see what the opinions of those groups you oppose are and study their recommendations, then cast your vote wisely.

What a sight to behold
Mr. Sowell, and all the other conservatives with any public mouth piece are begging us to not punish politicians with our vote, amazing!

As if this point in history is the difining momentfor our nation; I do not agree with that. Carter had the house and senate and got next to nothing done; so much for leadership and party control.

Maybe if all these loyal talking heads would have put half of this effort into brow beating Bush, and others that strayed from the consevative path, or--like immigration--took stands contrary to the majority of voters...
The GOP would not be in this position. This is not totally about Iraq and security in this election, it is more about doing what you your party elected you to do.

As Mr. Sowell pointed out 2 columns ago, when you do not do the will of the people who put you in office, you are out-of-here!

I am as worried as the next citizen about lefties taking over key positions, but I have no othe recourse except my vote, letters to my reps have gone unnoticed. Let the chips fall where they may.

11h

Dems would be worse
As bad as Bush and the Senate have been on immigration, the Dems would be far worse. They want full amnesty, no limits, and give them the vote even w/o citizenship. Talk about giving away the country! Thank God for the House, which was the only body that stood up for us.

Tannabear
I was about to write "Bush is not up for reelection" but a dozen beat me to it.

However, do have to say, re one fo your comments, if Bush had pushed for racial profiling, how many who now criticize him would have been up in arms that he SUPPORTED it? He can't win on this issue. Profile and he is a racist, do'nt profile and he is unconcerned.

So, please, the profiling and the "forged documents" are not valid complaints.

Tannabear
jorge bush isn't on any ballot in any district in any state this cycle. Take a midol, jeez.

JUST THE FACT
That "the system" allows someone such as Alcee Hastings and other's to hold a public office after already either being impeached, or convicted of a crime is an insult to American citizens,(except of course for those who were foolish enough to elect them to office) and certainly does not provide the world an example of Democracy at it's best. But remember come election day, remember Dr. Sowells advanced warning of what to expect if the likes of Pelosi, Hastings, Conyers, Kucinich and others from the wrong party take over control of the house and senate. If in fact Republicans bite off their noses to spite their faces, and allow Decocrats to take over both the house and senate, let's just all pray that two years will have been plenty of enough time for the Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot again.

Forged documents
That was Dan Rather, right?

Tanabear
Forged documents? Lies? I believe it was the Clinton administration which decimated the Intelligence capabilities of the U.S.

Dr. Sowell
When will you run for President? We need clear thinkers who are not so enamored of themselves that they understand that what is good for the country is good for their local constituents. It will not matter how much federal highway money a congressman or senator brings home if they give away the home by bestowing non-existant rights on the terrorists trying to kill us. Or, by taxing us into bankruptcy because they can't add 2+2 and get 4. The "tax-cuts" have increased revenue to the government and the "rich" pay a greater share of that increased amount. Only a dimmacrat could spin that to mean that the wealthy are paying less and we need to roll back those "tax-cuts" so that the middle-class, that they supposedly are so supportive of, will pay more taxes, have less money and the economy can go into the crapper. Then in '08, they can use the old line "it's the economy stupid" hoping the the American people won't remember that it was the dimmacrats that screwed the economy.

In a teaching moment

I don’t want any of those things, either. And I also think that to declare a bill unconstitutional (McCain-Feingold) and then to sign it is a violation of the oath of office.

The overriding consideration, though - bigger than war, bigger than immigration, at least tied with security - is the issue of Supreme Court appointments. Changing the Senate now is my greatest nightmare. Even giving over those committee chairmanships in the House is a distant second.

Listen to the Good Doctor 2
The time for griping about RINOs et al is in the primaries. Now it is time to calmly select the best of two weevils.

Did I say Bruce Bartlett?
Sorry guys. I forgot he changed his name to Benedict Bartlett.

Listen to the Good Doctor
You guys seriously need to heed the Sage. He is by far the brightest bulb in Christmas tree. Wonder of wonders that I agree with him, but it's still true.

He's right. No sane voter with any conservative bone in his body can do otherwise than vote for the Republicans. Supreme Court judges are appointed for life; your vote will effect whether the Constitution means anything in your children's generation, because this is the one chance in a generation that we will have to take control of the Supreme Court. If we sit this one out, we get a liberal court until I retire, and I'm twenty six years old. Mark my words.

Sitting it out or voting D like that traitor Bruce Bartlett is worse than burning the American Flag.
