Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Nowhere is political frivolity more in evidence than in issues involving racial and ethnic groups. Disagree with some policies or demands and you become an instant "racist."

The substance of those policies or demands, and the substance of the objections to them, get lost in an orgy of rhetoric and personal accusations. Racial issues are just one of a growing number of issues where rational discussion has become virtually impossible.

Rational discussion would not serve the interests of the Democratic Party, and the Republicans think that the way to increase their small share of the black vote is to imitate the Democrats.

All the most powerful groups within the Democratic Party -- the teachers' unions, environmental zealots, lawyers who make big bucks off frivolous lawsuits, and the American Civil Liberties Union -- have interests diametrically opposed to the interests of blacks.

The teachers' unions fight any attempt to allow parents to pull their children out of failing schools and no one needs to do that more than black parents who want their children to get a decent education -- without which they have little chance for a better life.

Severe building restrictions imposed by environmental zealots make housing prices skyrocket, forcing blacks by the tens of thousands out of San Francisco and other places dominated by green limousine liberals.

Huge damage awards or out-of-court settlements won by frivolous lawsuits force up all prices, with special impact on low-income groups, such as blacks.

When the American Civil Liberties Union and liberal judges are able to get criminals freed on flimsy grounds, or prevent hoodlums from being expelled from the public schools, the community most likely to be harmed is the black community.

How then can the Democrats consistently get the lion's share of black votes? And why can't the Republicans make any serious inroads?

Democrats understand that the key to their success is in keeping blacks dependent and fearful. They cry "racism" at every opportunity and resurrect every grievance of the past. But the real secret of their success is the ineptness of Republicans.

Republicans have been trying to win over the average black voter, something they are not likely to do for decades, if not generations, because political inertia is powerful.

Blacks voted solidly Republican for more than half a century after Abraham Lincoln and solidly Democratic for more than half a century after Franklin D. Roosevelt. Nor are blacks unique. The "solid South" voted Democratic for more than a century.

The only black voters the G.O.P. have any real chance to attract are those whose views and values happen to be closer to those of the Republicans than those of the Democrats.

These are certainly a minority of black voters but many elections are won or lost by a few percentage points. In a closely divided country, if the Republicans can just reduce the Democrats' 90 percent of the black vote to 75 percent, the Democrats are in big trouble.

Instead of specifically targeting those black voters they might have some chance of winning, Republicans have been trying for decades to placate black "leaders," including the NAACP, and to throw blacks such sops as stamps honoring Paul Robeson and Kwanzaa, and awarding a Medal of Freedom to Mohammad Ali.

Those black voters that the Republicans have some chance of winning over are more likely to be repelled than attracted by Republicans' honoring a communist, the black separatist counterculture and a follower of Louis Farrakhan.

As for black "leaders," as heads of protest movements they need an enemy just to keep their jobs, and where will they find new enemies if they let up on the Republicans? The NAACP's most irresponsible and demagogic insults against Republican presidents did not let up even after Ronald Reagan and both Bushes tried conferring and conciliating with them.

It doesn't seem to occur to Republicans that a strategy which has failed every time for more than 20 years may be wrong.

Blacks and Conservative
Mr. Sowell, I wonder if you ever thought that
the reason why blacks don't vote Republican particular for conservative Republicans is because they know when it comes right down to it
Conservative Republicans are not going to stand up for them. Conservatives don't believe in activist government. So if I'm being discriminate against, if I'm getting screw by those with power in this country, conservatives are not going to do a thing about it. As far as the school vouchers and unions, black people may not like the unions either but we also know that vouchers are not about poor black kids. It about middle/upper class white folks taking their tax dollars and spending it on their kids and their schools, just like now. Blacks will still be stuck in sub par schools. They maybe better sub par schools but still sub par. The reason is because quality and talent always follows the money. Finally, when I read
Sowell and other conservatives, they always write like the world is fair or people don't get
screw over. I'm not saying the government should be intervening all the time but sometimes thing are just two unfair. For examples, like Katrina, I wonder how Sowell would do losing his job, his house, his personal contacts, because they all lost their jobs and homes and are scatter all over the country. See if he could pull himself up by the bootstraps and make it.

Maybe their Fault, but YOUR problem
Debonair: (I heard you the first time ;) )
-Tanabear is right: Is keeping people ignorant and dependent and paying them to have children they can't support helping them?
-If you have to choose among (1) totally lousy public school, (2) a worse subpar school, (3) A better subpar school, then (a) wouldn't you like to have the choice; and (b) isn't the better subpar school your best choice - even if it's not as good as the schools some other people have?
- Do you know Sowell's life story? He did have family, but he was moved around, his mother abandoned him, etc. But schools were better then and parents didn't side with their delinquent children against the teachers who were trying to help them. Sowell got into Harvard BEFORE affirmative action.
- Which party was in charge of new Orleans and Louisiana and which party's culture of corruption diverted money from flood-prevention to things like casinos? Hint: It wasn't the Republicans.
-Yes, things are unfair. There's nobody better placed to fix that than you. So are you going to ask the Democrats to fix it for you or what?

Debonair
Dr. Sowell did “pull himself up by the bootstraps.” As he put it – I hope I’m quoting you correctly, Dr. Sowell – “Hunger is a great motivator.”

On a different note, Debonair
Currently, I am volunteering for a political campaign in central Louisiana – lunch hours, after office hours and weekends. Yesterday, during my lunch hour shift at the HQ, an employed black man came in, voiced support for my Republican candidate and said he wanted to help… for pay. He was astonished to learn all involved with the campaign, save for the consultant, worked their “hoofies to the quick” on a strictly volunteer basis.

In utter disbelief, the man asked, “Why would you do that??? Ah, will you get payback after your candidate gets elected?”

My reply, “I volunteer because I want good leadership, meaning I care about you. And, that sir, is the only payback I’ll get.”

Shaking his head and chuckling, the man climbed into his brand new, well-appointed SUV and sped off.

Debonair is right
The prime tenet of conservatism is NOT to provide special considerations for the various interest groups. Rather, conservatives intend to provide a fair, steady, reliable and predictable playing field for all players. Having been presented with equal opportunity (always a work in process) the individual can rise as high as his talents and ambition will take him.

Those wedded to the belief that they can only win as a result of activist governance will be the last to recognize the value of conservatism. They will always fall prey to charlatans whose entire existence depends upon cultivating a victim mentality.

Debonair demonstrates another obstacle to success; class warfare. She dismisses school vouchers work, not because she would not benefit, but because someone else might benefit more. This is the insidious legacy of black leadership. Demonize those with more.

Until one admires success one will likely never achieve it. What else is the model to emulate?

SO TRUE IT IS
The rational that Dr. Sowell set's down in Frivolous politics: Part III. It may be questionable though as to who has their heads buried father in the sand, or elsewhere. Is it the Republicans for continuing to fail to be able to attract a higher percent of the black vote? Or is it the black voters for not being able to see through the sham of the Democrat's plan that is to make sure that blacks and other minorities remain at a level in society where it appears there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and that relying on the handouts that the Democrats provide amounts to nothing more than being tossed a bone by the party they support and appears to be their only means of surviving, how sad.

Heads Need To Roll

Debonair and Acceptreality
Thank you Debonair, for a straightforward honest expression of your perceptions and mindset. It is a valuable explanation for your politics. I would like to hear more from you.

Acceptreality, your analysis is superb. Debonair would seem to be a perfect example of a voter who sees her only protection from victimhood to be government intervention. She buys into the Democratic mantra that D's are the party dedicated to protection of the oppressed. And she views herself as oppressed, at least in comparison to "middle/upper class white folks".
What could be more logical than her politics?

How do we alter Debonair's belief that a protective government is a better choice than increased opportunity and increased ability to enjoy the rewards of merit and effort? I think if its ever going to get done, its going to be the upwardly mobile half of the black community that does it. So far the left has been very good at labeling successful blacks as uncle toms and worse. People like Bill Cosby can't change any minds coming from white country. It will have to be done black to black.

r0_d2
Do you relly think the Dems don't track the race of their major donors? Really? If tracking the race of major donors is a reason not to vote for the candidates of a party, the booths would be empty this November.

"Racial Profiling" That's a joke, right? Why do people pretend there is virtue in ignoring reality?

Yeah, letting the info out was a boo-boo. Such information should only be in government hands, like, say, the Veterans Administration guy who let his computer get stolen.

To Debonair, and 'ole rO...
You haven't been reading what the good Dr. Sowell has been expousing for soooo long. The inner city blacks are the ones that are suffering the most. And who has their 'back'? The democratic party. They keep blacks poor and uneducated, on the welfare roles.....for votes. Now that IS a crime. Trying to do it to Mexican immigrants, too. Just for votes. Please READ what Dr. Sowell is writing without your hate. p.s. Have you ever read any of his books? Or read any of Star Parker's columns? What.?...just refuse to believe them or mistrust them because they are enlightened(EDUCATED)? Your logic is mistifying.

Dr. Sowell is a Genius
"Instead of specifically targeting those black voters they might have some chance of winning, Republicans have been trying for decades to placate black "leaders""

It's the most annoying trait of Republicans - we try to appease our enemies. When we do that, we achieve two things with perfect physics-defying efficiency:

1) Alienating the only people likely to support us

2) Giving those who will never support us even more reasons not to: by becoming just like our political enemies, their supporters have no reason to switch to our side.

Ann Coulter has been talking about this for a while now. It's in the ten commandments of "How to Talk to a Liberal, If You Must". An awesome book, by the way.

http://www.amazon.com/How-Talk-Liberal-You-Must/dp/1400054184

Republicans Should Consult With Sowell
Dr. Sowell you articulate my feelings exactly, once again. Black "leaders" don't speak for me and Republicans gain no ground with me by placating to these race hustlers. I could care less if the president ever showed up at another NAACP convention. As far as I'm concerned, the NAACP is a defunct organization.

You brilliantly lay out historical data in Black Rednecks and White Liberals which debunks all the nonsense flamed by the race hustlers. This book should be required reading in all highschools and college level African/African American Studies departments.

As for Debonair and those who think along these lines, I don't need a conservative Republican to stand up for me. I can stand up for myself. Unfortunately, the Democrats and those who preach victimhood insist that blacks can't do anything for themselves unless the Democrats do it for them. This type of thinking is very destructive and only enflames the current crisis in a segment of black America.

Dr. Sowell, do you have any plans to write an autobiography? I can't wait to read it.

Why the vitriole, r0_d2?
I have read many of your recent posts and all I hear is hatred and loathing. It seems you cannot conduct a civil discussion without attacking in anger. It will not enroll anyone(but the chorus) in your ideas, nor will it serve your cause.

Democrats keeping Blacks dependent

Democrats see their success not just in keeping BLACKS dependent and fearful, but in keeping ALL of us that way.

Eddina Symns

Blacks and Conservatives
The question now for the Republican Party is how do we attract those that we have lost? We will have to:
1) Educate on how decreased regulation / social programs lead to increased opportunities.
2) Highlight the role of the Republican Party in bringing about civil rights legislation.
3) Highlight the role of the Demoncrat Party in slowing / stopping civil rights legislation.
4) Apologize for our past transgressions.

Debonair, r2_d2
Go back a couple of years and read all of the Sowell columns you can, especially the ones conderning education. You might also read Walter Williams while you're at it. The education would do wonders for you.

Both of these gentlemen, aside from being brilliant, have the ability to express themselves in terms that almost any moron can understand. They don't spout or go along with politically correct ideas. In other words they speak that which several others fear to speak, much of it based on their research.

r2_d2, still haven't discovered decaff?

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If it's in English, thank a veteran.

So what, r0_d2?
Even if you are accurate about the GOP tracking such information, how does it harm anyone? Do you think that they will use the information on people who support them, against them???? Please explain.

As far as being trusted with sensitive information, what do you call FBI records in the White House living quarters? Where you equally incensed then, or was that violation of the law OK?

I suggest you are also miscalculating the intelligence of the black voter. The Dem stranglehold on their votes is eroding, albeit glacially. It really will not take much for that to become a torrent.

By the way, good luck to the Dems in November. If they can pull this one off (which I truly doubt) it will likely be a swan song. The information age has drained their fuel and their engines are coughing up rust.

The forest and the trees.
Another great column! Thanks Dr Sowell!

r0_d2
Is at all possible you have an alergic reaction to aluminum?
I swear your freakin hat is burning your brain.
I can't even comment on the bull you write, for it has no ground in reality.
Oh and for future reference Wikipedia is not reliable, for any moron can submit articles to it,for some other idiot to come along and believe it...oh that would be you.

Democratic Party and Blacks
The Republican Party can and has won the Presidency without the black vote. The Democrats have absolutely no chance to win without all the black vote. Yet have the Democrats ever offered even the Vice-Presidency to a black person? Have the so-called black leaders questioned this? Apparently there are no qualified blacks who are also loyal and hardworking Democrats. None in all the years of the Republic have measured up to the brilliance and luminosity of our memorable Vice-Pesidential candiates. The actual calculus may be the belief the oh-so liberal democratic base (for racial reasons?) will not support and vote for a black candidate. It is my opinion that the democrats know they need not extend this form of equality to blacks in order to keep the black electorate in lockstep in their fallacious belief that the policies of the Democratic party are beneficial to the black population. The Republicans have also neglected the black electorate. Republican values are more in line with those of the Black church, the institution believed to represent the political sensibilites of black people. They can't or won't seriously engage in the battle between values and entitlements. Too bad, because the Republican Party will soon be the permanent minority party after the 2008 election. The venal Mrs Clinton will automatically get the large mass of idealogically non-aligned female votes and she will likely choose a minority running mate to solidify the historic bonafides of her run. I do not think this tactic will be used to correct the historic dismissal of blacks as mature political thinkers and players, but as a sop to the large percentage of blacks which unfortunately and myopically perceive their connection to the political culture as flowing solely through the loving and devoted Democratic Party. Unless blacks can be induced to vote for values rather than Party, Mr Sowell, as intelligent and perceptive as he is will be whistling in the wind.

Spelling, usage, grammar and meaning.
Right off the bat the replies made my teeth rattle. As one whose mother tongue, or sole language, is not English, it drives me to distraction to read posts full of mis-spellings and incorrect usage. Sadly, this applies to some of the columnists also. I've had to email corrections to them so that their article wouldn't appear illiterate or irrational. It IS important to watch your spelling because it can drastically change your meaning. If you don't know what the differences are or why you would choose one or the other, please consult an English dictionary like we "white Euramerican immigrants" ;-) had to do. (No, I'm not rich euro-trash. I'm poor euro-trash!)

I know I'll get flack for this post but PLEASE, PLEASE look at this list to see if it applies to you. BTW, I'm not sure if this will post in a columnar format. So if it doesn't....I'm sorry!

Interesting history lesson:
- In 1850, Democrats passed the Fugitive Slave Law, making the mere accusation of being a runaway slave reason to deny habeas corpus and legal representation (about 11% of all blacks were actually free).

- In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Democrats, allowing slaves to be imported into the territories.

- Disgusted with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, free-soilers and anti-slavery members of the Whig and Democratic parties founded the Republican Party in 1854.

- After denouncing slavery, elderly Republican Senator Charles Sumner was beaten nearly to death while he was reading in his office by Democrat Representative Preston Brooks in 1856.

- In 1858, while debating Republican Abraham Lincoln on slavery, Democrat Senator Stephen A. Douglas said, "For one, I am opposed to negro citizenship in any and every form. I believe this government was made on the white basis. I believe it was made by white men for the benefit of white men and their posterity forever, and I am in favor of confining citizenship to white men, men of European birth and descent, instead of conferring it upon negroes, Indians and other inferior races."

- In 1863, Republican President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

- In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was passed, forever banning slavery in the US. It received the votes of 100% of Republicans (88 out of 88 in the House, 30 out of 30 in the Senate), while only getting 23% of the Democrat votes (16 out of 66 in the House, 3 out of 8 in the Senate).

- In 1867, the Texas Republican Party was formed...by 150 blacks and 20 whites.

- In 1868, the 14th Amendment was passed, granting the newly freed slaves equal rights. It was supported by every single voting Republican (128 of 134, 6 not voting, in the House, and 30 of 32, 2 not voting, in the Senate), but none of the 36 House Democrats nor any of the 6 Senate Democrats voted for it.

- In 1870, the 15th Amendment was passed, guaranteeing black the right to vote. Every single Republican voted for it, every single Democrat voted against it.

- In the 1872 congressional investigations, Democrats admitted forming the Ku Klux Klan as a means to fight against the spread of the Republican Party.

- Between 1870 and 1875, Republicans passed many pro-black civil rights laws, but when Democrats took strong control of the House in 1892, they repealed all the civil rights laws, allowing southern states to implement the Jim Crowe laws.

- In 1913, Democrat President Woodrow Wilson reintroduced segregation throughout the federal government. He named avowed racists like Josephus Daniels and Albert Burleson to his cabinet.

- FDR's first Supreme Court nominee was a life member of the KKK (Senator Hugo Black, Democrat from Alabama).

- In 1944, FDR selected Harry Truman to be his Vice President. Truman had joined the KKK in Kansas City in 1922.

- In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, gaining the vote of only 64% of Democrats (153 for, 91 against in the House, 46 for, 21 against in the Senate), while gaining support of 80% of Republicans (136 for, 35 against in the House, 27 for, 6 against in the Senate).

- In 1993, Democrat President William Jefferson Clinton presented the author of the "Southern Manifesto", Democrat Senator William Fullbright, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

- The only currently elected federal official to be a Klansman is a Democrat (Robert Byrd, D-WV).

- To this very day, Democrats continue to contend that blacks are inherently inferior. So inferior that they think that blacks require a 20 point bonus (out of 120 possible points) on their college admissions scores simply because they are black. Others feel that blacks are so stupid that they are unable to speak proper English, and must be taught in "Ebonics" in school. They continue to support an organization -- Planned Parenthood -- that was founded by a person who believed "colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated" (Margaret Sanger).

I read the link. I agree, the RNC screwed up. And they apologized duly.

Now, it seems you have your little panties in a wad over the fact that this list, inadvertantly sent to the Sun reporter, had been sent to the SECRET SERVICE (emphasis yours).

Do you know what the Secret Service is?

Do you know what the two duties of the Secret Service are?

Do you know anything about the procedures of the Secret Service?

Please answer these questions. If the answers are "Yes" to any or all, then please give details of what you know.

I am patiently waiting your response.

I ain't holding my breath.

Enjoy the great article
Come on guys, enjoy the article and comment on it and stop feeding ro-do's ego. Why is everyone answering ro-o2, He is getting so much attention he is probably kicking the slats out of his crib. You are making his day a little less miserable. Does anybody really cares what his rattled brain thinks? ( am I falling into his trap?) Let's please disregard this character and enjoy Dr sowells brilliant insights. If you want to get sick, there are plenty of radical left wing cites you can listen to.

pointless to engage with you r0_d2
You do not address my question, preferring to "spin" with hyperbole.

There is no allegation that the profile info was illegal, merely a slip up by a staffer. Again I say: how does this negatively impact anyone? Also, please tell us how incensed you were by the FBI records, which is a felony.

As to Bush's thoughts on profiling I say nonsense. All of us lead our lives based upon our learned experiences. Ratonal individuals profile every aspect of our lives into two categories: "this works" and "this does not work". While not infallible, it works well and does streamline our decisionmaking. Anything else is less effective and a waste of resources (indeed, the TSA has successfully intercepted every Norweigan grandmother terrorist suspect; at what cost and at what distraction to intercepting the arab perpetrators?).

Profiling is an integral part of our lives. Even the Rev. Jesse Jackson expressed a sigh of relief when he identified some street followers as white, knowing he was less likely to be assaulted.

Dr. Sowell for President in 2008
Dr. Sowell does it again with his brilliant analyses.

By the way, Debonair, I live in Milwaukee, where MANY inner city minorities have been helped with the school choice program. Concerned parents of minority children are given a choice whether to keep their children in public school or put them in a Catholic, Lutheran or Alternative school. My city has it's problem with crime in the inner-city, but choice is WORKING for our city's kids. It's working so well, that for Wisconsin's Democratic governor to have a CHANCE of being reelected, he had to sign an increase in the number of children being allowed to participate in Choice.

Democrat people of color, don't fall for race hustlers like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. They want to keep you weak and victims, so they can always have YOU depend on THEM. Then you'll always vote for them. You're stronger than that, and Republicans know it. Our politicians, however, have a difficult time getting that message across.

But look! The tide is turning! There are 4 black Republicans running for statewide office this year, and more and more blacks are seeing that the Republican party doesn't take you for granted or keep you down for votes. We want to lift you up to be what you have the potential to be. Flagwaver of NC is a terriffic TH blogger, and he has several blogs on this subject. I suggest you go over there when you have time.

I also recommend Dr. Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals". It just may open your eyes to your own potential.

ringmaster is right
It is too distracting to engage when there is no expectation of success. This would fall into the "this does not work" category (above).

Cedjan, Irey
What a brilliant move LBJ made in the 60's. I can just see this avowed racist in a smoke filled room explaining his proposed war on poverty to his Democratic buddies. "Boys, we've got to set up a dole and get as many folks on it as possible. As soon as they think the only income they have is from the gov't, we've got their votes for life." How right he was, and the black family which had been the main institution for black advancement and solidarity in the face of racist obstacles, was undercut just as most of those obstacles were removed. Although a pleasantly high percentage of black folks immediateley made the most of the new opportunities, a discouraging percentage dropped the ball. My perception is that our black community is split sharply, with a very small middle ground. Of course, what do i know. I'm not part of it. Except for individual courtesy and recognition of merit there is not too much i can do. Its the educated and prosperous black community which will lead the way in pulling the black ghetto out of its culture, if it is even possible in the foreseeable future. Debonair doesn't identify with Dr. Sowell. Perhaps she might listen to you.

First paragraph:
Strongly agreed! And it isn't limited to racial/ethnic issues. Disagree with people on political issues and you could be either a Nazi or a Defeatocrat, communist, or traitor, depending on which side of the fence you're arguing.

A little more civility would go a long way on all issues. People get too wrapped up in the rhetoric to examine the true issues. It's easier that way. Spouting rhetoric means one doesn't have to think or judge. And I'm guilty like all the rest; I have my lazy-brain days too.

r0_d2:
"GOP = Party of Racial Profilers"

Who are the people sworn to destroy America? Are they the donkey boys in Washington? No. They are
1) Muslim
2) Middle-eastern (almost exclusively) or black
3) Male (so far)
4) Under 40. The instigators are older, but the active members are younger.

Do we see a pattern yet? Racial profiling has its place. It makes more sense to profile these people for terrorism than 60-something white grannies and 12 year old children. Does that mean white grannies get a free pass? No, but the most of the people investigated should meet the criteria above, lest we waste our time.

I'm convinced Bush's quote from your first post was for public consumption and I doubt he seriously believes it.

Once again schools get the rap
Mr. Sowell blames the failure of blacks to educate themselves squarely on the schools.

"The teachers' unions fight any attempt to allow parents to pull their children out of failing schools and no one needs to do that more than black parents..."

I can't speak for everyone, but when I failed to send my kids to public school, the local school district goon squad did not show up at my door with truncheons and threats of bodily harm. Let's say what it is: The unions oppose competition paid for from the public till. Thankfully, Milwaukee has it and some parents have an option.

I won't even go into the role that one-parent households, poverty, TV, violence, and a gamut of other issues play in helping divert kids from education. To blame it ALL on the unions is disingenous at best and an outright lie at the worst.

To Troglodyte
You are SOOOOO correct. If there's one thing that tickes me off more than people who make mistakes in "spelling, usage, grammar and meaning" on internet bulletin boards, its...

jackasses that go around on internet bulletin boards criticizing others for their mistakes in "spelling, usage, grammar and meaning".

By the way, Trog, since you're such a jackass about "spelling, usage, grammar and meaning", I thought I would point out to you that the subject of your message (which I have repeated 3 times so far in this message as a form of sarcasm) is missing a comma (a mistake that I kept in my repetitions of your subject). I know that a lot of people think it's optional, but it is not. Proper punctuation requires a comma between all elements in a list, even between the last two, before the conjunction. The "and" or "or" does NOT take the place of the comma. If you want proof, beyond what the grammar books say, consider the following: the very word "comma" means "pause". Therefore, any place in which a pause would occur in the spoken word, a comma should be used in the written version. And clearly, in the spoken word, there is a pause between each element in a list, even the final two.

I strongly suggest that the next time you criticize others' "spelling, usage, grammar and meaning", you get your OWN "spelling, usage, grammar and meaning" correct, at least in the post in which you criticize that of others. How does it feel, Troglodyte, to be hoisted on your own petty little nitpicky petard?

Regards,
Trevor

Fine, then, (u)r(a)0_(&)d(umb)2!
The Secret Service collects SS #'s on all people who are going into the White House or any function attended by the President. No problem with them having that information.

Any charitable, non-profit, or political organization that functions on donations must take the SS # of any donor. The IRS requires it. And any such organization needs to collect personal data on their contributors. That is hardly "racial profiling."

And none of the above is illegal. It's nothing like having 900 confidential FBI files in the posession of a partisan operative who isn't performing any governmental service.

r0_d2 I repeat myself,
you must be too young to remember Clinton and the FBI files.

What are you 16 yrs. old?
Do we have an age limit here'for were sure don't have an I.Q. standard.
Take that tired stuff some where else,no one here

Keep your head firmly planted in the sand. Do not under any circumstances let any facts get in your way to a good rant. Have fun in La-La land.

Frivolity vs Reason
We all must rely upon our reason to determine whether a particular candidate will get our vote. The "scare tactics” that are often used, (i.e. “My goodness, the list went to the Secret Service”) requires reasonable review. In reading the article that R0_D2 linked, I was confused as to what prompted his diatribe. How is it that demographics are now racial profiling? I don’t know how many times I’m asked for my race in dealing with surveys, etc. They also ask for my household income. I can refuse to answer, but I recognize that it permits them to slice and dice their information. If demographics is racial profiling, how do they get the “facts” being spewed about how the blacks vote? In exit interviews, the questioner notes the race of the individual, and then when all the data is accumulated, one of the slicings is by race. Seems reasonable to me, and to start screaming racial profiling about it is frivolous.

Misspellings
Trog,
Welcome to the great American experiment. I too lament the lack of spelling and grammatical knowledge expressed on these and other posts (I make my share of them as well). I suspect that the less than stellar grammar and spelling can be attributed to poor education via government schools over the past 20 or so years and a lack of pride in accuracy.
Excellent post done with humor. Alas, I fear that those who make the most egregious errors will not see themselves in your post.
Well done and well said.

Sowell on Frivolous Politics III
The usual tour de force.

If you had to list the top five/smartest patriots in America, Thomas Sowell will be on the list.

Ignoramuses won't get it and the "racial spoils lobby" will do the usual race-baiting. Their opinions aren't worth VP John Nance Garner's "bucket of warm spit." Recently, some historians say the Veep didn't say "spit" but another four letter word beginning with an "S" and ending in "it." Even more true.

Black Republicans
What is a Black Republican? Thats merely a Black person, who thinks for his or her self. They usually are ones who would follow Jesus Christ as the Messiah, and not the pseudo-Messiah Jessie Jackson. Calling White Republican's racist is a result of what i have always called the Jessie Jackson syndrome. Jackson whose best buddy is his fellow Jew hater Louis Farrakan, who should be reffered to as Fake-a-con. Thier both white haters, who the Liberal controlled media, refuses to denounce. Strange how Demon-craps all bow to any psycho-babble emitting from Jackson's mouth.

r0_d2, I see you cannot seem to let go of your one idea (?), and keep repeating the same lame information ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
It is not the first time one of our political parties have done something less than brilliantly (releasing personal information), and it surely will not be the last.
As to your assertion that the Republican party racially profiles, I doubt it. I work for TSA, and we are forbidden from profiling people passing through our checkpoints, lest we find ourselves in very deep Kimchee. You do know what Kimchee is don't you???
I must admit I personally think the policy is wrong and we should be profiling those who have made it a habit of destruction and taking of life. They (male and female) should receive enhanced scrutiny every time they fly. Not to lessen checks on other passengers, just increase the scrutiny of those who meet the profile of terrorist: Generally male, although I believe females are becoming more involved, generally middle-eastern in appearance, and generally muslim.
I do not expect a rational or reasonable reply, but hope springs eternal...

Something Recently Collided Into Saturn’s Rings
Astronomers have found evidence that a comet or asteroid might have recently collided with Saturn's rings. New images from Cassini show a region of Saturn's D ring that seems to have a series of smaller ringlets outside it. This structure was originally discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope more than 10 years ago, but spacing between the ringlets has decreased by half since then; from 60 km down to 30 km.

This is a true news release.

I was just concerned that maybe your home planet was in some sort of danger.
The left will spin this as another result of Global warming I'm sure.

This is as on topic as your post!

Blacks & Republicans
The Republican Party needs to be “the inclusive party” as Colin Powell once said.
Many Blacks are expected to vote Democratic. I’m black and I live near Atlanta Georgia and I remember being told to vote totally Democratic. I was never told to study each party and place my vote totally on the facts. I simply believed everything I was told by the black leadership. I remember when former Mayor of Atlanta Maynard Jackson some years ago in a TV ad requesting that the African American Community Vote for the entire Democratic Ticket. I thought about that for a while and asked myself, why? I began to reason why the former Mayor would request such a thing. What was wrong with the Republican Party other than they were labeled Anti-Black. Well, as I began to read and study, I realized that Racism is prevalent in both parties and in all people so that was not a reason to exclude the Republican Party. Then I looked at the facts and my mind began to change.
What really changed my mind was how these black leaders seem to not want blacks to think for themselves but to allow them to tell us how to think and how to vote. I asked myself, what has the Dems done for black people and I really didn’t see anything.
You see, I’m a Christian and I strongly believe that it was God who brought blacks from Slavery to where we are today. I mean on an economical level and educational level. Blacks have more now, that they have ever had. The opportunities are greater than they were 200 years ago and even 60 years ago. It was not Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton nor Martin Luther King. It was God and he used those men to bring about His will as for as change for the black race in America.
These so called Black Leaders, who utilized the title Reverend wants blacks to think it was the Democratic Party and their affiliation with them that has brought about change and therefore we (Black People) should continue to trust them (Black Leaders) when it come to them telling us whom to vote for.
They love to use that title (Rev.) because in the black community, that title carries a lot of weight.
So, in order for the Republican Party to include black people and to obtain their votes, they need to appeal to the Morals of the Black community. The Bible is a conservative book, I have read it cover to cover and I find little if no liberalism in there. The Republican Party must appeal to the vast amount of Christians in the Black community and call those Black (Rev.) on their positions that contradict what the Bible teaches.
Also, they must have some Black Leaders that will go out and do what Jackson and Sharpton are doing and that is speak directly to the Black community and I mean to the HEART of the black person, that place where God and their soul meets. Then and only then will they began to see a turn in the black vote.
I could go on but this is long enough. ?

The Dems are NOT Friends of Blacks
The Dems need victims. If they actually helped anyone rise above a poverty level, they would no longer be a victim.

Jesse Jackson HAS to find racism in every issue. Otherwise the Rev. Jackson would have to go to work somewhere.

Raising the mimimum wage does NOTHING to help the wage earner. The economy of the nation, of any nation, is based on the lowest paid wage earner. Raise the wages and all prices will increase accordingly. Economics 101.

Why.....
Why isn't Mr Sowell part of the National Republican Party's leadership? Sowell and Walt Williams for Prez in 2008!

Not gonna work
The reason why the Republican Party wil make few inroads among blacks is because if the nature of what the black community wants, not because of Repulican ineptness.

In general, what blacks want are fully-funded government programs: racial set-asides, welfare, subsidies, etc. Blacks want a system where the government gives them a living and they are perfectly willing to vote for anyone who gives it to them. Since Democrats believe whole-heartedly in wealth re-distribution, blacks find a perfect home within it.

It simply doesn't matter that blacks voted overwhelmingly Republican in the past. At the time, neither party offered ready access to the U.S Treasury, so the Republicans were the better choice. Now that Democrats offer such access, they are a better choice.

The real Republican ineptness is focusing so much on minorities that they ignore their natural constituency: the white middle class. Republicans won only 58% of the white vote in the 2004 election, whereas Democrats get anywhere from 70%-90% of the minority vote. Yet, white people are the 800-pound gorilla in electoral politics. Every percentage-point increase in the white vote garners ten times as many voters as the same percentage increase in minority votes. Therefore, it makes sense for Republicans to increase their share of the white vote to over 60-70% than try to win largely irrelevant minority votes. If they did that, then they would push the Democratic Party into the wilderness.

Unfortunately for Mr. Sowell, winning the white middle class vote requires just the opposite program. Whites worry about the quality of schools and neighborhoods so they are unlikely to support policies that de-value their property, like voucher programs or loose building codes.

A good way of looking at the problem is to consider California public-sector groups like teacher's unions. Republican rhetoric treats these people as parasites living on sinecures who are destroying the educational system and, therefore, the future of America. But is this correct? Whenever I see a California teacher's strike, I notice that the vast majority of these people are white and middle-class. I notice that they are being squeezed by mass-immigration from below and the Hollywood elite from above. Republicans programs would wipe out this middle class in California, first by destroying their income, then by destroying their property values.
Most of these people probably couldn't live in California if Republican policies were imposed. Is it any wonder, then, that these groups vote Democrat?

If Republicans want to be the majority party, then they have to look out for the interests of majority, not play "gotcha" with Democrat hypocrisy.

Great post by beowulfe!!!
Thanks the history. I knew much of that, but I enjoy seeing the timeline.

If I were black I would ask myself, "Why hasn't the Democratic Party nominated any blacks for the Supreme Court? Or Secretary of State? Or Vice-Prez?"

"They couldn't find a black candidate more qualified than Al Gore?"

"Wasn't Al Gore's father a racist US Senator that voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964?"

To all
We are giving too much attention to ro... and just as "ringmaster" pointed out a while back.....Let's comment on the great article.. Dr.Sowell has so much good material here that it is a shame to be responding to inane blogs. Way too much ! And I love this article in the three part series. So articulate AND so much "Horse sense". I am pretty sure Dr. Sowell doesn't want the Presidency of Our Country...But he would certainly make a good one IMHO.

acceptreality
People have been feeding it. When you feed it, it gets even more angry, loud, and generally annoying.

Kind of like a Jakovasaur.

voter education
The "isolate and indoctrinate" methodology is not only used in the Black communities, but in the Hispanic neighborhoods as well. I have several Mexican employees, and they have told me that they were told (in Spanish) to vote Democratic because "Republicans are only for the rich people", and urged to show up for immigration rallies "to support your race." I hope that Dr Sowell and others of like mind will work on helping develop a vision of American politics that does not depend on dependency and misinformation.
Notes on minimum wage: I am a small businessperson who resents politicians telling me that I have to pay more out of my pocket (which is pretty thin) for the same work as if I had a printing press in the basement. I only have two sources of money--my customers or my savings.
The other thing that is rarely mentioned is that someoccupational minimum wages and union contracts are based on a multiple of minimum, so I have employees that have to be paid twice the basic minimum--so where does that put us? The unions lovesraising the minimums, not because any of their members make minimum, but because their multiplied minimums go up without new contract negotiations.

Trevor
I’ll concede the final comma preceding the “and” at the end of a list. I knew someone would get something caught in their zipper, but clearly, the gist of the post was wasted you.

BTW, I noticed your blog is 100% spelling error free, not a comma out of place, nor a single thought articulated since July 27th!

Anyway, Trevor, it’s been nice chatting with you. Now take your Thorazine, put that high pressure fire hose back in your pants before someone suffers an injury, and perhaps you might take moment to comment on Dr Sowell's excellent article if you're not to overwrought.

Troglodyte
Masterful riposte to Trevor.

Thanks Jander
I completely missed Beowulfe's history lesson. Anyone who missed it, please scroll up. You must copy it for posterity.

It is amazing that we never hear any of this except Lincoln freeing the slaves. Could it be that our teachers and media completely overlooked these important lessons of history (recent history too!)???

PS. The only person who will argue every single point is r2d2. He is amazingly silent all of a sudden. I hope he did not blow out an artery.

Trog & Taproot
I agree with you both on the grammar thing 100%. Part of the typo problems may be that people think faster than they type and then don't go back and edit what they wrote. It would be helpful if TH had a spellchecker.

But it is VERY discouraging that so many people from around the country have no idea how to use a homonym or punctuation correctly as is all too prevalent reading these posts. Our wonderful educational system at work.

Trevor. You're wrong about the comma. And rude as well. Read "Eats, shoots and leaves." A comma in that particular instance is optional.

To those engaging r2d2: Please stop. You're wrestling with a pig in the mud. All that does is get the pig angry and you dirty.

Actually, the pig enjoys it. This is why i endeavor to avoid it. Moreover, and slightly more to the point, I never try to teach a pig to whistle. I know it can't be done, and this does annoy the pig.

Thanks for your input. By way of explanation, I learned English in Britain. WRT British English usage I conceded Trevor's point. I've relented and have adopted American usage on most things because this where I live. Both of you understood my point: Speak and write to be understood and not be misunderstood. Homonyms and homophones are common problem areas as well as misspellings which change the meaning of the word.

Sorry about getting off on this tangent. I didn't mean to distract from the many good, on-topic posts discussing the article, which is why we are here in the first place

Debonair/Frivolous
Wow Debonair!

You are stuck in a "liberal" Madrassa that has brainwashed you into believing all the garbage you expouse. After nearly 50 years of “liberation” of the 1960s, what has the loyalty to the Democratic liberals gotten the blacks? They are still complaining about the same things even though their party has had a dominant power the majority of the time.

The whites, of which I am one, are not the problem. It is the sell out of the black leadership of its people to the liberals that keeps the majority of your race behind. Why don’t you analyze what Dr, Sowell is trying to tell you and make a difference for all the people of this country.

I have been on the side of the minorities since my high school days, backing the ideology of Martin Luther King, and today all I get from many of the blacks I work with is recriminations. I’m called a racist, a bigot and a cracker by a race I’ve supported. This has not made it easy for me maintain a degree of caring, but I do. The conservative believes that you teach a person to fish and they will never go hungry again. Nor will they owe there allegiance to their “overseer” for their future.

Wise up and teach your next generation on how to become independent.

To Trog
Perhaps you overlooked the following and I quote "and perhaps you might take moment to comment on Dr Sowell's excellent article if you're not to overwrought". Maybe too overwrought.?? But, as has been pointed out we all , in our haste to get a point across , rush ...and don't look at our spelling, etc.

Blacks And Conservatives
First of all, I'm a man not a woman. So many of you conservatives try to fit people in your liberal stereotypes. I can tell by your comments. Conservatives talk a good game with limited government and "do it on your own" ethos. You guys like your subsidized mortages, FDIC insurance, import/exports banks, subsized road, parks, and infrastructure to support your suburban oasises but then turn around and complain about some low wage woman with 2 kids getting the earn income credit or raising the minimum wage. A government handout is a government handout. That dismisses most of you guys b.s. comments.

Next, Dr. Sowell, I respect the man, most of his economic arguments you can't argue with but my problem is when he goes off about black politics. My particular pet peeve is when he toss out these dismissive statements about the civil rights movement or about the civil right acts like they didn't really matter all the much. Yes, I do understand his point about the civil rights acts are not the be all/end all of black progress in America. What I would like to ask Dr Sowell is this? It those acts don't really matter all that much to black progress then why are the conservative working so hard to remove or weaken those laws everytime they get the chance. Dr. Sowell might not know why but most blacks know why, which why we vote for the Democrats despite agreeing with Republicans on some issues.

The reason is conservatives are basically about people with power, mainly white people. People with power like the do what they want to do and they don't like to answer to anybody. So if I don't like too many minority moving in my neighborhood, going to my kids' school, working in my company, or too many Asias taking make kids spot at the top colleges. People with power can cut that crap out without get sued. That's what they want because people with power always want absolute power. White folks, do this stuff currently. When the neighborhood gets a little to colorfully, they pack up amd move out further to the new less colorful suburbs made easy by those subsized mortages, roads, and parks and new schools. If they don't do it that way they use those green space laws like Dr. Sowell writes about to accomplished the same goal.

Finally, liberals don't have to play on racial division to advance their agenda. Liberals have been winning for 400 years one way or another. It is the conservatives that has always had to play on racial division to hold ground over the last 400 years. Blacks know this better than anybody. It hard to vote for people you know will stoke resentment against you to gain power or hold power. Those people have switch from one party to the other over the years but they tend to call themselves conservatives.
