Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Recently one of those increasingly familiar New York Times editorials disguised as news stories was headlined "Conservatives Help Wal-Mart, and Vice Versa."

There was a chart with photos of people from conservative think tanks saying things favorable to Wal-Mart's side of the controversies surrounding that company, along with dollar amounts over them and their statements, indicating how much Wal-Mart had donated to the think tanks where these individuals work.

Buried deep inside the story, near the end, there was a passing comment that "labor unions have financed organizations that have been critical of Wal-Mart." But there were no people or statements singled out with dollar amounts over them.

The double standard was evident in another way: The damning charge was that these conservative think tanks and the scholars who work there "have consistently failed to disclose their ties" to Wal-Mart.

There was no charge that liberal think tanks like the Brookings Institution, or the scholars there, "failed to disclose their ties" to their donors.

It is very doubtful if most of the scholars at either liberal or conservative think tanks know who all the many donors to these institutions are -- or care.

For one thing, there is money coming from all points of the political compass and from a whole spectrum of special interest groups. You can say whatever you feel like and, if it doesn't suit one think tank, it will suit another.

It so happens that I work for a think tank, though not one mentioned in this New York Times "news" story, and I could not name five donors to the Hoover Institution if my life depended on it, though I am sure that there are far more than five.

For all I know, I may have defended some of those unknown donors -- or I may have bitten the hand that feeds me by attacking them in this column.

It is by no means unknown for different scholars at the Hoover Institution to come out publicly on opposite sides of controversies. Nor is that unknown at other think tanks, liberal or conservative.

Why then should we "disclose" -- even if we knew -- who the donors are, as if we were delivering commercials for our sponsors?

Why do conservative donors contribute money to conservative think tanks or liberal donors contribute money to liberal think tanks? Is it rocket science that people are more likely to contribute money to those they agree with?

Or is it something sinister, as the New York Times implies -- at least when the think tank is conservative?

Such cheap-shot journalism tells us more about the people who engage in it, and the constituency to which they appeal, than it tells us about those they write about.

What it tells us is that there are people so narrow and shallow that they cannot understand how anyone else could possibly disagree with what they believe without having sold out.

Somehow such journalists, or those that they appeal to, believe that they are so iron-clad right that no one could even mistakenly disagree with them without being bought and paid for by the bad guys.

Are we talking world-class chutzpa or what?

The self-infatuated idea that nobody could disagree with you for honest and informed reasons is far more dangerous than any influence that donors' money may exercise.

Far more is involved here than cheap-shot journalism. It is the audience for such journalism that is the real concern.

Our whole educational system, from the elementary schools to the universities, is increasingly turning out people who have never heard enough conflicting arguments to develop the skills and discipline required to produce a coherent analysis, based on logic and evidence.

The implications of having so many people so incapable of confronting opposing arguments with anything besides ad hominem responses reach far beyond Wal-Mart or think tanks. It is in fact the Achilles heel of this generation of our society and of Western civilization.

I am a retired engineer, now an assistant teacher at a local public charter school. They have an easy certification program here, but i don't want to be a teacher because of the paperwork hassle. As it is, i am assigned the task of tutoring 7th and 8th graders who have dropped through the cracks and are failing math. It is incredibly rewarding. Go for it. The kids know if you care and respond to it.

Dr. Sowell rules.
That is all.

oh my goodness
“Somehow such journalists, or those that they appeal to, believe that they are so iron-clad right that no one could even mistakenly disagree with them without being bought and paid for by the bad guys.”
“What it tells us is that there are people so narrow and shallow that they cannot understand how anyone else could possibly disagree with what they believe without having sold out.”

It’s after reading such statements that I question Sowell’s mind or judgment. These statements could be applied to almost all contributors at townhall yet no one takes notice. Who does Sowell say is ultimately responsible? The education system, of course! It is a wonder that he came through it and did so well. Furthermore, he was part of the system he condemns yet never mentions the way in which he must have failed. Then there’s the comment that the system lacks conflicting arguments. News flash, the same can be easily demonstrated for townhall. Finally, when he writes “The implications of having so many people so incapable of confronting opposing arguments with anything besides ad hominem responses reach far beyond Wal-Mart or think tanks. It is in fact the Achilles heel of this generation of our society and of Western civilization.” He’s actually on to something but doesn’t have the sense to realize the full implication. That statement can be equally and almost universally applied to both the right and the left, townhall included. This man does nothing but stroke a collective ego. I’m shocked that more people don’t find him either laughable or completely untenable.
Yes, “The self-infatuated idea that nobody could disagree with you for honest and informed reasons is far more dangerous than any influence that donors' money may exercise.” Take heed to this truism. It applies to all of us.

As for Citgo, I will still avoid it.

A Critical Mass is Critical
Sowell writes:

"Our whole educational system, from the elementary schools to the universities, is increasingly turning out people who have never heard enough conflicting arguments to develop the skills and discipline required to produce a coherent analysis, based on logic and evidence."

Mr Sowell once again shines his laser insight. Our schools are turning out too many without the ability to think critically. He didn't comment on the underlying reason.

And there is a reason. The DNC and the political left understand that their policies cannot withstand the glaring light of rational thought. A critical mass of dumbed-down voters is absolutely essential to sustain the Democrat party as a viable entity. The DNC certainly understands this. This explains why they are so opposed to competition (vouchers) in public education. A government monopoly controlled by the Democrats via the teachers' union is what they want and, sadly, that is what we have.

Not So, SkunkWorks Supt.
Valero is an American corporation. I had suspected it of being Venezuelan; partly because of the name, I suppose. But I did a little surfing and found that the company is publicly held, was founded in San Antonio in 1980, and its headquarters is still there. The name Valero was adopted from the original Spanish name of The Alamo: Mission San Antonio de Valero. You can check out Valero at http://www.valero.com.

The important thing though is that it is publicly held. Citgo, on the other hand, is owned by Hugo Chavez.

Valero
SkunkWorks Supt. writes: "HornDogg - You forgot one! The Valero chain of gasoline stations are part of Hugo Chavez's empire."

Valero is not owned by the Venezuelan owned oil company, PDVSA. Valero Energy is publicly traded on the NYSE and is headquartered in San Antonio. They own about 5,000 gas stations and is the US's largest petroleum refiner. PDVSA does own CITGO Petroleum.

Wheelhouse -- Left University
Go ahead and tell us the university. Nobody knows who you are. (I think!)

Critical thinking . . .
is certainly missing from almost all liberal thought.

If it wasn't, they would probably be conservatives.

HornDogg - You forgot one!
The Valero chain of gasoline stations are part of Hugo Chavez's empire.

Surely you remember Hugo? The fellow the lefties revere almost as much as Fidel and Che?

On the mark
As always, appreciate the insights, however the last paragraph was probably the most damning. Having lived all over, I run into a lot of people on both sides of the issues who aren't at all interested in understanding anything, or the logic of a position or genuine facts. And seem to be incapable of doing so. As a religious conservative myself, it's been very frustrating - and laughable if it weren't so sad - that both sides often look exactly like each other except in their positions. To some degree the liberals just have a bigger "pulpit" from which to get out their propaganda. But I don't see either the side doing a lot of good at present. The hope I see is in the younger generation, like my own kids, who we have raised to think critically, and are positive "evangelists" in every sense -- and neither side likes them at all -- but I worry how much they have any "grist" to put in their mill. Outside of additional training at the dinner table, for example, there are very few good choices out there in terms of education.

The Danger of Superficial Logic
We do get some logical thinking from the left. Their failure lies in not taking the last step by critically analyzing the opinions they pose. An easy example is tax cuts, "tax cuts have increased the deficit." On the face of it, it seems perfectly logical and its a great sound bite for liberal drones to run with. However when we start looking at the results of the tax decreases we see a substantial increase in revenue to the government. So then why did the deficit grow? Well after more analysis we see that spending grew at a much faster rate. Did the tax decrease cause slower growth in revenue? Only in the beginning when the tax decrease was just starting to stimulate the economy now its at record highs. So what causes record deficits? At this point its a no brainer for a critical thinker and its where the liberal changes the subject (one of their favorite tactics) "the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer."

The vast majority of liberals just except the superficial logic they are given. Others, mainly in leadership positions for liberal movements do get it. They could care less about the deficit. The best way to control the proletariat (the working class), short of a police state, is to control their pocketbooks and the way that is done is through taxes. By using the deficit and the rich/poor and a few other arguments they con enough none critical thinkers (with big hearts) to support their policies and keep them in power. It goes hand in hand with the vote for me I'll protect you and take care of you crowd. You don't need to work to hard. Both critical thinking and the effort to improve your lot in society require to much effort for some. HEY! nothing like a free lunch.

This is why Colleges Universities have stopped allowing diverse thought and stopped teaching critical thinking. This is also true for the newspapers and television, information must be controlled in a liberal environment. The more liberal the more control is required.

Ken
You are probably ahead of me on the second career. My wife tells me I will be eaten alive if I try to go into the classroom. It is not acceptable to me just to try, as I plan to succeed. I will make contact with parents with the kids and develop a plan, enlisting parents, students, and myself.

Goals, objectives and dicipline will give the students a taste of what is required for the rest of their lives.

Gurky
The current saying is "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach, teach teachers."

The Education Department or College is the laughing stock of every university--because of their low standards. I say this being a teacher. HOwever, it is my second career. I don't think anyone should go into teaching without some real experience outside of education.

Why bother
I wonder why Thomas Sowell is worried about "cheap shot" journalism? At least taking a cheap shop requires a bit of fore thought and deductive reasoning. When the New York Times admits to having published fake stories (and pistures) submitted by their star reporters the idea that other reporters applying their own personal "slant" on story seems mild.

Why they really hate Wal-Mart
The Elite hate Wal-Mart because it allows the proletariat to have things that look as nice as the things the Elite people have. How can you incite people to overthrow the government and put you in power unless they are both Poor AND downtrodden? And the way to keep them both is to deny them gainful employment AND a comfortable life for themselves and their families.

One of the unmentioned benefits of the Industrial Revolution was the mass production of furniture, fixtures and equipment (such as china) at prices low enough for the working class people to own them -- as well as the jobs making and distributing those things, which allows them to pay for them. Wal-Mart is carrying on this tradition and the Lefty Elite hate it because people can no longer tell the difference between the kitchen of an Elite and the kitchen of a Prole.

There are seven deadly sins, but in my own opinion the most dangerous sin of them all is Envy/Jealousy. Keeping the Proles both poor and downtrodden allows you to cultivate envy and jealousy in them that will lead to your rise in power. And Wal-Mart stands between the Elite Liberals and power -- so Wal-Mart must go.

It's simple, really, if you got your education before Universities became trade schools and 'education' became 'relevant' ...

I'm a liberal arts graduate with a major in West Saxon Literature and a minor in Victorian History. Both have proved a lot more useful than a major in "Gender Issues in Contemporary Rock And Roll".

dhimmitude (who is eligible)
My limited investigation on this subject over the past couple years taught me a few things. Under the yoke of your Islamic masters, dhimmitude would only be an option for "people of the book". Athiest are not elligible for dhimmitude.

Having a dhimmitude status is similar to being a second-class citizen. No voting rights, little or no representation in politics or law making, always considered guilty until proven innocent. Oh, did I mention the dhimmitude TAX. Being a dhimmi, you have to pay the people in power for the right to remain a christian or jew in their territories.

Historically, it is advantageous for Moslems to keep more people in subject dhimmitude than to collect less taxes by killing them or having them convert. This type of corruption was quite prevelant when the Ottoman Empire controlled the Middle East and parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

dhimmitude.

I have post at my blog that I would love for you to read. In it I take issue with a lot of what you have said in your post, it's called SOHK.

That said, Dr. Sowell is right about the way the 'news' is presented. Anyone with a conservative viewpoint is suspect, while liberals are treated as the mainstream. Call it groupthink in action!

Insightful as Usual
"The implications of having so many people so incapable of confronting opposing arguments with anything besides ad hominem responses reach far beyond Wal-Mart or think tanks. It is in fact the Achilles heel of this generation of our society and of Western civilization."

Mr. Sowell, I appreciate the depth of your analysis. You always go beneath the surface and expose the ugly underbelly of any topic.

As you articulated, it's the ignorant masses easily led by degenerates that will eventually cause the implosion of our civilization. Unfortunately, communist indoctrination has worked well in our country.

Thanks for the reminder, Dr. Sowell
I'm so down on the mainstreet media that whenever I see them favoring one tract, I take just the opposite. Wal-Mart, for example, to my awareness began to take bigtime hits from the media, oh, at least a year ago, when Senator Wad from Mass began pummelling them ostensibly over their hiring practices and lack of health care coverage for its employees. But, what real got his knickers (large ones, of course)in a snit is that Wal Mart refused to unionize and, thus, became the punching bag for every wacko left-wing organization whose logo is the hammer and sickle. The media broke it's collective leg getting on that bandwagon. Ok, fine. I just upped by purchases at Wal-Mart another couple of hundred a month and switched my gas buying from Citgo to Murphy. Viola! Hit two birds with one stone - the Castro lovin' Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez who owns Citgo (still haven't figured why our military bases contract with Citgo)and every weenie, whiney leftie organization that still hasn't grasped the concept of capitalism and free enterprise. And I made it a point to watch every last minute of the Clintonista-edited "The Path to 9/11" on Sunday and Monday. When the unedited DVD'S hit the market, I intend to buy a six-pack of'em.

Nothing Cheap about the Results
Efforts are being made to open debate in Universities. Numerous lawsuits are being won by conservatives to allow debate over "diversity" issues.

The old adage, "Those who can Do, others teach". Education continues to be dumbed down because the teaching industry is being filled with individuals who can't teach.

It is a two edged sword, people with skills go into business and those lacking teach. I am also being unfair to some teachers/educators who are truly passionate about their work. But they are hamstrung because they may not disapline students.

I am sixty, and plan to teach business courses when I "retire" in five years. Maybe the students will kill me but at least I will have tried.

I go to a liberal college
I won't name the university but suffice it to say, the leftist bent prevalent on campus is sickening. Mine is a top-tier school and I am surprised (well, not really) at how poorly some of the students write and attempt to articulate themselves. There are innumerable courses with ridiculous titles and suject material. The faculty are concerned with indoctrinating rather than teaching kids how to arrive at the truth. The fact about education is this: if you really want to learn, then you don't go to high school.

dhimmitude
It means subjugation to your Islamic masters. It is one of the three choices given to you if they win the war this country is currently in (in Afghanistan, Iraq, and soon in Iran).

The other two choices are conversion and death.

Useful Idiots
The naivete of many of the educated classes becomes more apparent every day. Logic used to be a required class. I hear virtually nothing about it anymore. Items that used to be open to debate are now taught as articles of faith and if we can't get everybody to agree with us, we'll sneak around the court system until we find some demented judge that agrees with us and try to make our viewpoint a law. But we don't wait until college to indoctrinate. We start in pre-school. Rainforests are sacred ground. Spotted owls are more valuable than humans. If your parents smoke they should be reported to the authorities. Rather than teach debate and critical thinking, we teach the one true way. Which just happens to be liberal indoctrination. Ugottabekidding, there is no certainty that America will not be lost. Listen to the nightly news to find out how many Americans have been brainwashed already and how many are more eager to negotiate the store away than defend it. Scares the bejabbers out of me! And by the way, nobody donates a penny to me so I am beholden to nobody.

Words?
What the heck does dhimmitude mean? If it isn't a word....what word did you mean to write?
Good post otherwise.

Ugottabekidding
Good post! I always thought that naive people could become "useful idiots." But I never thought about it that way. Our Liberal colleges producing them on a mass scale. Your right!

Leftism is not ideas--it's religion
The most conformist narrow-minded automatons that I've ever met in my life, have all been leftists who call themselves "progressives." Pope Benedict XVI is more likely to move to Malibu, California and convert to Scientology than some of these leftists are to believe that lowering income tax rates could ever increase overall tax revenues. “That’s impossible.” For them, it's not even a math question--it's a religious test of faith.

another sorry baby-boomer legacy
Since the 1960s, we have been producing "useful idiots" by the millions in the western world (to cite but one example, look at all the white females graduating from our colleges who think sociopaths like Steinem, Greer and, yes, Clinton are "truth-tellers" and sooth-sayers).

No wonder Europe will be lost by the end of this century - and why most of the western world (save for America and maybe Australia) is doomed to dhimmitude and to inescapable decline.

Well, let's just see how the "sex in the city" girls survive in a muslim caliphate (assuming they survive at all).

Another insightful column
from Dr. Sowell! And I couldn't help but think that what he's saying about education, is demonstrated here daily by many of the Liberal comments. A complete lack of ability for coherent analysis.
