Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Often we hear that "all the experts agree" that A is better than B or that "studies prove" A to be better than B. But one of the reasons for this can be that only people who favor A over B are likely to get the money to conduct studies or be given access to the data needed for a study.

A few years ago, a book by William Bowen and Derek Bok paraded various statistics that they interpreted as proving the success of policies of preferential admission of blacks to colleges and universities.

A chorus of praise for this study was heard throughout the media and echoed in academia and among liberal politicians. The study was later cited in a landmark Supreme Court decision on affirmative action.

Not everyone thought this was a great study, however -- or even an adequate study. But no one was allowed access to the raw data on which the Bowen and Bok study was based. So no one else could run the numbers for themselves and reach their own conclusions.

Those who sought such data included Harvard professor Stephen Thernstrom, whose long and distinguished record of scholarship included being one of the creators of the Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups. He was refused access to the data.

When only people with one set of views are allowed to do certain studies, do not be surprised if "studies prove" that set of views is right.

I was not surprised that Professor Thernstrom was refused access to the data. I had had similar experiences.

Back in the 1970s, I tried to get statistical data from Harvard to test various claims about affirmative action. Derek Bok was then president of Harvard and he was the soul of graciousness, even praising a book on economics that I had written. But, in the end, I did not get to see one statistic.

During the same era I was also researching academically successful black schools. I flew across the country to try to get data on one school, talked with board of education officials, jumped through bureaucratic hoops -- and, after all this was done and the dust settled, I still did not get to see one statistic.

Why not? Think about it. Education officials have developed explanations for why they cannot educate black children. For me to write something publicizing outstanding academic results in this particular black school would be to open a political can of worms, leading people to ask why the other schools can't do the same.

Education bureaucrats decided to keep that can sealed.

Critics of affirmative action have long said that mismatching black students with colleges that they do not qualify for creates wholly needless academic failures among these students, who drop out or flunk out of colleges that they should never have been in, when most of them are fully qualified to succeed in other colleges.

Has the ending of preferential admissions in the University of California system and the University of Texas system led to a rise in the graduation rates of black students, as critics predicted? Who knows? These universities will not release those statistics.

This is not peculiar to the United States. In Britain, the claim has been repeated endlessly that putting criminals in prison "doesn't work" and that various rehabilitation programs "in the community" are more successful in reducing criminals' repetition of their crimes.

When statistical data from the Home Office showed the direct opposite of what was being proclaimed by the Home Secretary, other high officials, the media, and academics, the solution was simple: Such data were no longer released.

Sometimes it is not the data but the money that is used to limit who can do studies on controversial issues. Advocates of "global warming" have access to all sorts of government research money but skeptics and critics can depend on no such largess and may even be risking their careers by angering bureaucrats who have staked a lot on this crusade and who control the purse strings.

Even when the taxpayers' money is used to collect data or finance research, those who dispense that money and control that data often treat these things as if they were their own private property, to be used to promote research congenial to their own ideologies or interests.

complete truth
The comment about the black school is correct on all levels. Democrats want to make minorities think that they are uncapable of rising above the status quo and making something of themselves. the liberals are trying to make minorities such as blacks and hispanics beleive that they cannot become great and that society owes them. doctor Sowell is a shining example of the fact that this is not Blacks and hispanics have every bit as much potential and ability to succeed as whites. another example would be a rapper named emenim. He is a white person with a "you owe me" mentality. People need to learn that we are all on an equal playing feild. The varialbe has never been race but drive. If you want to have 1 million dollars by the end of this year bad enough you will find a way to make that goal come true.

creative dude,
I thought it was 93.71%.

John: So your point is?
What does your first post (A two sided argument instead) have to do with Thomas Sowell's article.

That the administration holds back adverse studies that don't follow their position, and then have the gall to present other studies that do. I'm just shocked.

What really does bother me, are when the main stream media or academia, presents bias studies and reports.

Just the facts, please.

People, know ourselves
92.45% of all widely quoted statistics are made up on the spot.

Few people indeed are not guilty of this. One part of the term "Integrity" consists of trying to avoid doing it ourselves.

Thank you, Mr Sowell

Who Are They?
I am reminded of my first civilian supervisor, an Assistant Vice President of a large corporation, who conducted a personal vendetta against imprecise use of the word 'they'. When anyone around him, including his superiors in the company hierarchy, would make a statement like "They said the project would be ...", Mr T's immediate question was "Who are THEY?". Those who worked for Mr T soon learned to be certain of the source of our information.

We should all be the same way with 'studies'; demanding to know what studies and what the actual data was before we even consider accepting someone else's analysis of what "studies prove".

The same attitude should be applied to poll results. What were the exact questions? How were respondents selected? At what times on what days were they queried? How many people were contacted but refused to answer the pollsters questions?

Cover-up
James Hansen, who is a climate scientist, feels the administration at times has held back reporting on climate change from those studing climate change.

Two-sided Argument?
I would like to know more about what you're saying, John. Small-time meteorologists and scientists? Cover-up?

Could you please list some sources?

A two sided argument instead
The scientists may not be doing a complete job, and even holding back the opinions of small time meteorologists, but this is not to say the cover ups have not gone both ways.
This administration, who’s ideology tends to be that in favor of oil, has also covered up small time scientists who argued that climate change was occurring. The administration has simply changed reports in favor of oil use of this nation.
This argument can be run both ways.
Of course, what it is coming down to now is economics and adding fuel to the large auto, not “God’s Green Earth”, as supposed religious followers (including the administration) have concern for, which they seemingly do not.

Studies show .......
A well-respected friend (Dr. Judah I Rosenblatt, Phi Beta Kappa Mathematician, Statistician) once told me: "Most people use statistics like a Drunk uses a lamppost, for support rather than illumination". Sure enough, I have observed this in countless situations.

Years ago, I worked at a University providing assistance to graduate students in their thesis and dissertation preparations. Nearly all of them told me that their advisors had "told them how each "study" would conclude. So much for free and independent inquiry.

I also learned how grants were sought and received for lots of studies which provided "mother's milk ($)" for the University.

I recently retired from Government Service; need I say more?

Whenever I hear the words "study" or "expert" the Bulls**t alarm goes off.

The fallacies of 'Studies prove'
The rhetorical trick is to appeal to an authority that cannot be checked--and to dress up an ideological prejudice with a statistical fabrication. Two logical fallacies for the price of one. I see the phrase 'studies prove' in papers by students who want to trust what the authorities say--or who'd rather not investigate any more and test their preferred position. Teachers should challenge the 'studies prove' move.

This reminds me . . .
. . . of a satirical study performed a couple of years ago. I cannot remember the name or offer any links, so this in simply anecdotal, but...

The researchers set out to prove one thing and one thing only: facts and statistics may easily be misconstrued (or misrepresented) to server a purpose.

For their study, they evaluated crash statistics nationwide, specifically noting how many cars of particular colors were involved in accidents. From their research, they concluded that silver cars are the safest cars on the road.

They based this on the fact that silver colored cars were involved in the fewest number of accidents. (What the "study" failed to demonstrate -- but the researchers released in a follow-up to demonstrate their point -- is that there are also a lot fewer silver cars on the road than cars of other colors. Fewer silver cars equals fewer silver cars involved in automobile accidents.)

Studies Prove
Absooulutely proves the old axiom "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure".

As usual, Dr. Sowell is clear and consise in proving his points.

Wrong College
In 1943 while in the AAF I applied for acceptance
to the T.O.C.S program. This program was designed to make engineers in 18 months. My IQ was 139. I was accepted. My first day in calculas
I knew I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.I passed the first symester but the CO tossed me out as he felt I wouldn't make it and he was correct. In 1968 I took a course which was written and run by the Wharton School at U.of Pa.It was a 5 year course which I completed in 3 years. The only people who ever took the course in 1 year and passed were the Dean of the School of Law and the U.of Pa
and the Dean of the Wharton School. The course was written and graded by the Doctorial Candidates at Wharton. The right school is most important as Dr Sowell implies.Dr Sowell is the best of the rest, he and Walter Williams.

studies show, You can't trust them.
Funny you should mention that! I just finished reading a book called Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity. I won't mention the writers name. This book is full of "the experts say" and it also say's
New York Times bestseller. OK you got me!
Can I get my money back?

Hidden data
It seems a sad day when the data are treated as somehow sacrosanct. Maybe some more Freedom of Information Act filings at PUBLIC universities would release some information? I always get suspicious when an article or book gives out information without citing a source.
If we cannot get the information we need to make truly informed decision on an issue, how can we decide what we, as Americans, want to do?
The scariest thing is that too many people believe everything they read or hear on TV. Even if the data were available they would be unable to interpret it, or tell if it was being properly interpreted by an expert. That's why Dr. Sowell and his fellow Town Hall analysts are one of my favorite sources: they try to tell me why things are so in words even i can understand. (Read Dr. Sowell's Basic Economics and you'll never think the same way about politics and busines again.)

Studies and polls
Any study, research or poll can be made to say exactly what the initiator wants it to say. Anyone who believes any of them without independently verifying is a fool. Anyone want one that proves guns cause murder I can get it for you. Want one that proves they don't, I can get that for you too. Global warming, the same. Affirmative action, ditto.
Unfortunately today's individual never looks at anything and says, "That just doesn't make sense." As long as the liberal establishment has public education in their pocket it isn't going to change. The goal of public education is to produce idiots and they are quite successful.

Hear, hear, hear...
Yes, "Studies say" and "Experts have concluded" and "Polls suggest" along with "Nazi book-burning". Someone should compile a digest of liberal terms used to denigrate anything that does not complement their cause du jour. It would give a lot of credibility to that digest if someone with the credentials of Dr. Sowell would write it.

Public money should = public studies
Any grant money coming from the federal/state government should NEVER be spent on any private study.

Where is the 'public's right to know' on this issue? Or is the public ONLY allowed to know what they WANT us to believe?

"Studies Prove"
Another great insight from Thomas Sowell!

Rather than embrace the historical principles of scientific study, elitists prefer the comfort of selective data, or outright censure of criticism. After all, this is what keeps pseudo-science alive and well.

Pity these "elitists". They yearn to have the substance and capability of science but have not the courage to actually use it. It is a sever handicap in the war of ideas.

Maybe a foetus really is a person. Maybe the Iraqis deserve "choice" even if they bumble their choice, and choose poorly. Maybe “minimum wages” should have no federal withholdings. Maybe the Oil Companies should be encouraged to find more alternative energy - not ridiculed about their profits. Maybe immigration priority should be determined by the desire for assimilation into our democracy rather than proximity or willingness to break the law. Maybe term limits for Congress are just as fair and practical as term limits for the President. Maybe Muslims want to kill Frenchmen just as much as they want to kill Brits and Yanks.

There are a lot of things to study - it really helps to have a closed mind if you do not have the courage to use your conclusions.

More Skepticism, Less Bad Policy
Bravo! The rigged, unchallengeable "study" has been the great propaganda weapon of our
time. Most of these studies are no more "science" than the actor in the white coat pitching
pills on TV commercials is practicing "medicine."

I think back about a decade to the (ugh!) Clinton years & the last great concerted
campaign to ban private ownership of firearms. Steaming mounds of bogus "studies" treating
guns as disease pathogens were grunted out in support of the gun-banners. Respected medical
journals prostituted their credibility shamelessly by publishing them. That propaganda added
to braindead hysterical emotional pitches almost sunk us. Daring "skeptics" like John Lott
(_More Guns Less Crime_) debunked the crap and eventually turned the tide. We need a
"More Guns Less Crime" rebuttal for issues like "global warming" and "the obesity epidemic"
today.

The anthrogenic carbon dioxide induced global warming doctrine is particularly dangerous because its logic leads directly to permanent energy rationing and one-world socialist government. We can see how the whole debate is skewed: the government, i.e. then VP Al Gore, was lecturing broadcast meteorologists on how to constantly insinuate to the public that everything going on, including cold weather, somehow was a manifestation of "global warming". Any researcher or commentator is given credibility (and grants) based on their support; anyone who concludes otherwise is ignored, dismissed as a "skeptic", or accused of being a stooge for the oil and utility companies. The authors of one ballyhooed recent "study" did in fact try to deny their data and algorithm to "skeptics" wishing to verify (or debunk) their findings. The "global warming" dogma is being built up into a "non-falsifiable" proposition that somehow is always true no matter what data and phenomena are actually observed.

I'm a bit skeptical about establishing another "independent" government agency to audit scientific claims, because ultimately there is no such thing as truly "independent." Sooner
or later a President or Congress with an agenda will find a way to "get to" the commission,
and induce it to prostitute its credibility. What we really need IMO is to preserve our right
of free speech and free press and hold these "studies" and researchers, the journals that
publish them, and the givers of grants that fund them, accountable for propagandistic
nonsense. Our Congresspersons, especially, need to get grief when the federal government funds bogus agendafied "research" and "studies" with money confiscated from us!

Infirmative Traction
The behavior of those with a vested interest in preserving, prolonging, and even exacerbating racism grows increasingly egregious. These are the very miscreants who claim to hold our government to their "higher standard" through "Freedom of Information" laws, yet they themselves flaut the spirit of these laws with impunity. Hypocrisy is, obviously, not an exclusive Left Wing attribute, but they certainly clarify and define it's parameters for the rest of us.

Thomas Sowell is one of this century's most important intellects, and he has written a great deal about the destructive consequences of Affirmative Action, as well as a host of other Liberal "fixes". The problem is, these bacteria-laden "bandaids" make liberals feel good about themselves. They couldn't care less about consequences. They don't hang around long enough to see them.

We need to codify laws which make public property of any study done that benefits or harms the public good. Meanwhile, all efforts to obstruct access to data and results of these studies should be held up to public ridicule.
