A 'cycle' on nonsense

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Now that Israel has responded to rocket attacks and the abduction of its soldiers by terrorists by making military strikes into areas controlled by those terrorists, much of our media are deploring another "cycle of violence" in the Middle East.

For reasons unknown, some people seem to regard verbal equivalence as moral equivalence -- and the latter as some kind of badge of broadmindedness, if not intellectual superiority.

Therefore, when Palestinian terrorists ("militants" in politically correct Newspeak) attack Israel and then Israel responds with military force, that is just another "cycle of violence" in the Middle East to some people.

The "cycle" notion suggests that each side is just responding to what the other side does. But just what had Israel done to set off these latest terrorist acts? It voluntarily pulled out of Gaza, after evacuating its own settlers, and left the land to the Palestinian authorities.

Terrorists then used the newly acquired land to launch rockets into Israel and then seized an Israeli soldier. Other terrorists in Lebanon followed suit. The great mantra of the past, "trading land for peace," is now thoroughly discredited, or should be.

But facts mean nothing to people who are determined to find equivalence, whether today in the Middle East or yesterday in the Cold War.

Since all things are the same, except for the differences, and different except for the similarities, nothing is easier than to create verbal parallels and moral equivalence, though some people seem to pride themselves on their ability to do such verbal tricks.

Centuries ago, Thomas Hobbes said that words are wise men's counters but that they are the money of fools.

Regardless of fashionable rhetoric, there is no Middle East "peace process" any more than trading "land for peace" has been a viable option. Nor is a Palestinian "homeland" a key to peace.

During all the years when Arab countries controlled the land now proposed for a Palestinian homeland, there was no talk about any such homeland. Only after Israel took control of that territory as a result of the 1967 war was it suddenly sacred as a Palestinian homeland.

There is no concession that will bring lasting peace to the Middle East because the terrorists and their supporters are not going to be satisfied by concessions. The only thing that will satisfy them is the destruction of Israel.

Pending that, they will inflict as much destruction and bloodshed on the Israelis as they can get away with at any given time. This brutal reality is not going to vanish through verbal sleight of hand.

The terrorists have spoken in words and in deeds, including suicide bombers. They have what Churchill once described in the Nazis as "currents of hatred so intense as to sear the souls of those who swim upon them."

We saw that on 9/11 -- or should have seen it. But many, especially among the intelligentsia, are determined not to see it.

Of all the Western democracies, only two have no choice but to depend on their own military forces for their survival -- the United States and Israel. The rest have for more than half a century had the luxury of depending on American military forces in general and the American nuclear deterrent in particular.

People who have long been sheltered from mortal dangers can indulge themselves in the belief that there are no mortal dangers. Nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran or North Korea -- and, through them, in the hands of hate-filled terrorists -- may be all that will finally wake up such people. But that may be tragically too late.

Those who keep calling for an end to the "cycle of violence" are what make such violence more likely. "World opinion" in general and the United Nations in particular can always be counted on to counsel "restraint" in response to attacks and "negotiations" in response to lethal threats.

What that means is that those who start trouble will have a lower price to pay than if those they attacked were free to go all out in their counter-attack. Lowering the price to be paid by aggressors virtually guarantees more aggression.

That says it all.
Lowering the price to be paid by aggressors virtually guarantees more aggression. Israel and the rest of the world needs to raise the price for these terrorists. Punish them ten times what they do and they may think twice about doing it again.

Whatever it takes Israel to win
The un calling for restraint AGAIN...

Putin calling on Israel to stop (But nothing against hezbollah or hamas.)

At least, Bush got caught. The microphone was on when he said, "See the irony is that what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s--- and it's over," Bush told Blair as he chewed on a buttered roll. as reported by TownHall.

He may have NOT wanted to get caught, but he did. And the world KNOWS where he stands...

Until the rest catch up, Israel will go it alone and even though American soldiers are just next-door, they won't be allowed to help.

But, wait, the un is sending in peacekeepers... oh, ****, that is never good. (By the by, WHERE is the un going to get peacekeepers? the US is busy, Britain is busy, much of Europe, Japan... all the coalition members... Would they accept troops to fight in Lebanon against Shiites from Arab lands?)

"Militant" is Probably More Proper Term
Another excellent article from Dr. Sowell.

My only beef is that in this case, "militant" probably is the better term over "terrorist." Maybe this is splitting hairs, but unless I'm mistaken, generally speaking a "terrorist" is a person or group, not a state, that uses violence as a means to an end, whereas a "militant" is part of army that is run by a state.

You can't exactly bomb someplace because of "terrorists". You have to kill or capture the terrorists, who might be hiding out in any one of numerous different countries (including your own). But a "militant" has a home country that can be attacked.

I.e., a "militant" is part of a state's military force.

I think in this case, Lebanon is as close to a "state" as it's going to get, and so it's using its army, its missiles, and its "militants" to wage war against Israel.

Isreal must up the ante
Lobbing a few rockets into Lebanon is pathetic. The Isrealis need to frog march the Arabs out of Gaza, judea, Samaria, and good chunks of southern lebanon and Syria.

if that doesn't work, then Israel needs to confiscate the oil fields of the Saudi's and destroy Syria and Iran.

Each step thereafter, if reuired, must be bolder and more imaginitive than the last.

Only when Isreal destroys the will of the Islamic world to fight will there by any chance for peace.

Peacekeepers Defined
"Peacekeepers" n. A group of soldiers from countries not involved in a conflict, who position themselves between two warring parties so the parties can shoot at the peacekeepers instead of, or in addition to, each other.

"intelligentsia"
I wish Doc Sowell would define the word intelligentsia. I also wish he would here-to-for put this same word in quote marks when he uses it. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with its root word, so I must assume it is a "Self Naming" by a group of people who think they are smart but have yet to figure out they need to look at facts before expressing options.

Those who forget history
Great column.

People seem to also forget that in 1971 King Hussein had to kill a bunch of the Palestinians and kick the survivors out of Jordan after they tried to stage a coup.

Reality check from the past
Ah, Hobbes - that long-forgotten counterweight to the sunny credulity of Rousseau and his disciples, who came a century later and never left us.

He understood that nature is not the Hundred Acre Woods. And that man, while a savage, is capable of being anything but noble.

Leviathan would make stimulating reading on today's campuses and in many pressrooms.

intelligentsia
For the definition of the word intelligensia, no quotations marks required, see Webster:

Main Entry: in·tel·li·gent·sia
Pronunciation: in-"te-l&-'jen(t)-sE-&, -'gen(t)-
Function: noun
Etymology: Russian intelligentsiya, from Latin intelligentia intelligence
: intellectuals who form an artistic, social, or political vanguard or elite

"Raising the price of terroristm"
Skier says punish them ten times what they do and they may think twice about doing it again.

Sorry, we punished them a couple hundred times (they took out the WTC and we took out two COUNTRIES) and they're still doing it.

Nope, punishment will not deter these people.

They must be killed. Period.

And don't talk to me about collateral damage. The 'civilians' who provide cover and sanctuary for these scum are as guilty.

If ever there was a time to uncork the nukes, it's over Teheran and Damascus.

Another idiot
I noticed Senator Biden was quoted as saying "this is not our war" . Just another reason why these dems can not be allowed to run the White House. What an idiot, if fighting terrorism isnt our war, then I must assume he would return to the Clintonian model of no response to the Cole. Firing one missle in a building to kill the night janitor (he must have been the idea man), and generally treating terrorism as a criminal act to be handled by law enforcement.

Terrorist is the correct term
Yo Stewie

Although Lebanon is a soverign country, they are not in control of their southern area which is controlled by Hezbollah who are too strong in that area for the Lebanese army to displace. Hezbollah is using Lebanon for cover and being their usual cowardly selves, hiding behind children and women's skirts. Israel is forced to destroy the infrastructure of Lebanon to keep Hezbollah from escaping the area. The point is Lebanon is not behind the attacks on Israel, therefore Dr. Sowell's description of Hezbollah as "terrorists" is correct....as usual.

So if this is not our war... why should we be expected to step in and stop it? The same people that are pleading for us to get out of Iraq, are asking us to get INTO this conflict.

By definition a cycle of violence requires a response to action. If Israel finally kills off enough of the terrorist (and the supply chain), they will be unable to respond, end of cycle!

Seems a viable solution to me.

Hey jmadison
You want me to push the button? Until we annihilate these people they will not get it. I agree with you. They kill our citizens without any guilty feeling why should we care what happens to the ones they hid behind?

"intelligentsia"
It still requires quotes when used in the sense Dr. Sowell uses it. By definition, intellectuals deal in and with facts when forming opinions and laying out options. They may be in the forefront of a political movement (vanguard), but they certainly are not a true vanguard of the political thought of the majority (maybe not vast, but still a majority) of the American populace - at least away from the coasts.

The Root Cause of the Conflict
And yet, no one, not even Dr. Sowell, has gone to the heart of the matter: Islamic theology.

Muslims are so intent in destroying Israel because they consider it part of Dar-al-Islam, the lands of Islam. Since Israel was once under Islamic domination, it is, according to Muslim law, forever Muslim! No amount of appeasement can change that. No amount of land offered, unless it is all of the land, along with submission of the Jews to Islamic rule, will result in peace.

And--of course--if Islam regains Israel, they would try to regain 'Andalusia' (Spain), and Greece, and the Balkans... and then everything else, because the whole earth is suppossed to bow to Islam in the end.

Wake up folks. We are in the middle of a conflict of cosmic proportions.

Until we annihilate these people
Who are "these" people?

Im all for dropping a few nukes, but can we define who "they" are first? (Am I using the quotes correctly?)
I mean, when we write the history books, who do we say we annihilated?

I think the most important question we need to ask ourselves is: Can you drop a nuke on a religion?

Right as usual
They just can't seem to get it thru their thick skulls that these people want Israel removed from the face of the earth. Even if they do understand, they are sure it has to be the fault of Israel too, those poor misunderstood Arabs could not possibly be at fault.

Liberals never experienced a playground
Excellent article. Again, our clueless left is singing in concert with the U.N. Gang and those that stand to benefit from terrorism.
The bottom line is that if the playground bully punches you without a response on Monday, he'll take your lunch on Tuesday, and by Thursday he'll have you performing lewd acts with farm animals. Put up a fight on Monday and he'll leave you alone for the week, better yet, pummel him senselessly (disproportional response?) and he'll leave you and your friends alone for good.
Israel is doing just that, but they must do more. The Iranian nutcase, who's controlling the strings here, must be forced to realize that he and his nation are going to be accountable shortly. Iran has overplayed their hand here and this is an opportunity to eliminate their nuke program. I'm sure the Israelis see that.
I also agree with the other posters here - what ensured the peace after WWII was the fact that it was a conclusive victory, the U.S. basically bombed Germany and Japan into submission, therefore, their surrenders were unconditional and lasting. This Middle East "relativism" promoted by Clinton, liberals and the U.N. just prolongs the violence and provides the 6th century nuts recovery time.
Honestly, even if Israel had established their nation in the northwestern corner of Australia, does anyone here really believe that their current foes would not claiming something from them or trying to get into their nation?

Kofi Annan's c ontributions
I almost choked when I saw Kofi Annan urging restraint from Israel and suggesting a peace keeping force from the UN. This force is to assure peace in Southern Lebanon, or something.

Right. Just like they have kept the peace in other conflicts around the world. Kofi Annan is a criminal mouth piece for a corrupt, dangerous organization. The United Nations is an impediment to American interests, and a leech that sucks taxpayer dollars out of this country.

I think that Israel is doing what it has to do in order to survive. Israel seems to understand that. America has to act decisively to survive, but that is not understood by too many people in this country. We may live to regret that.

hezbollah agression
Hezbollah, the party of Allah...let's leave Israel do it's thing, and maybe those terrorists will take up permanent residience with Allah today. Keep going, through Lebanon, through Syria and take out the nuke sites in Iran. and maybe someday the Surrendercrats will awaken and back Israel in its rightous cause.

Cowards!
Darn! I wanted to say what Harry said, but he beat me to it, and said it better.

Back in high school (I'm 64 now) I was short and skinny, and during our gym class, I was regularly poked, pushed, and verbally degraded by a big bully. I appeased him. Around the middle of our junior year I'd had it. The day I got my courage back when he poked me, I punched him, after which he proceeded to beat me up. After I picked my self off the floor I told him that we were not over, and that the next time I would again punch him, but in the face, kick him, bite him or otherwise do whatever I could - and would not stop until he killed me.

From that day on he stayed away from me, and during our senior year, I almost never even saw him. That day I learned that when when someone does me wrong, I do back to them 2-3 times as much so they will know what to expect the next time.

Our problem is also that the far left, who have taken over the Dems, are cowards, pure and simple. "Kill my wife and rape my daugter, but PLEASE don't hurt me."

Our other problem is that many in that far left are socialists, along with I'm sure, some communist hold overs.

In my opinion, the outcome of the '06 and '08 elections will validate or dispute if the masses are indeed, the "ignorant" masses, or if they have gotten smart.

But what can we change?
From the perspective of blogs, nothing really.
So I pray. Please joine me.

"Concerning the Good News, they are enemies for your sake. But concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sake. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." (Romans 11:28-29)

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee." (Psalm 122:6)

Decoding the "Cycle of Violence"
In recent decades the phrase “cycle of violence” has become popular among academics and politically active celebrities. These words are typically employed when speaking about groups that blow up wedding parties and behead civilian hostages. By contrast, in these same intellectual circles the term “evil” is reserved for corporate executives and Presidents of the wrong political party—that is, for verbal targets who don’t fire back with live ammunition.

The phrase “cycle of violence” has several advantages. First, it transforms discrete acts of murder, retribution, or self-defense into an impersonal pattern. Rather than talking about particular persons who are guilty of specific crimes, this popular phrase encourages us to focus on a revolving door of mayhem in which hapless victims have been “caught up.”

(In similar fashion, individuals who promote cultural depravity are hidden behind “pendulum swings” that invisibly move public taste from the pole labeled Bing Crosby and “Leave It To Beaver” to one named “Two and a Half Men” and Eminem.)

The phrase “cycle of violence” thus excludes from one’s imagination the idea that certain groups and individuals might have greater responsibility than others for initiating or exacerbating hostilities. Messy details about what groups believe and how they talk about their opponents are shunted to the side.

Moreover, the proper solution to a “cycle of violence” is simple. Just intervene at any point in the flow of events to break the historical momentum. According to this paradigm, a tranquil equilibrium will automatically emerge once “the cycle” has been stopped. By picturing circumstances in this way one achieves a certain moral equivalence. Names disappear as attention is focused on a malevolent maelstrom that transcends human responsibility.

Several years ago a similar point of view was employed (in similar circles) when the arms race between America and the Soviet Union was discussed. If the U.S. unilaterally froze its weapon production, then the “cycle” would be broken and harmony would emerge. A more infantile version of this idea was promoted under the Sleep-In for Peace label.

In short, “cycle of violence” language excuses us from the task of distinguishing between force used to counter evil and violence employed to propagate evil. Indeed, it mindlessly places the actions of law enforcement officers and gang members in the same category. Most of all, this phrase makes it unnecessary to resist evil or even to take it seriously.

Almost half a century ago Hannah Arendt, speaking of the Nazi war criminal, Adolf Eichmann, observed that sophisticated opinion wished only to condemn trends “so general that distinctions [could] no longer be made.” I imagine that she would find today’s “cycle of violence” crowd (a group that includes “Munich” producer Steven Spielberg) as morally confused as the intellectuals she took to task.

"cycle of violence"
Although I agree with 98% of what Dr. Sowell writes, I have to take exception to this article. Israel is hardly a democratic society when it occupies territory, which it conquered (remember Israel attacked first in '67) and does not allow those populations in the occupied territories to vote. Israel's actions since 1967 have been genocidal. What Caractacus said of the Romans applies to the Israelis; "They make a dessert and call it peace!"

JLeo a day late for posting, but...
I agree with the majority of you stating that Israel must respond to aggression with a force greater than the instigating force. This is clearly the best short to medium term solution. Terrorists and their supporters have been feeding off of the world's reluctance to wholeheartedly counter their brutality for many millenia.

I must, however, take the time to note that the only way to permanantly create peace in the region is.....man Bush Basher's are going to hate this....erect a frigging Democracy smack dab in the midst of the Middle East! Holy macaroni lefties!! We're doing that!

(Before you respond with "terrorist strikes have increased since we began 'The Occupation,'" please note that I have already stated that it is a LONG TERM solution. Everybody understands that but you.)

All they are saying...
is Give Pease A Chance!

Well,

Israel gave peace a chance and got stuck right in their eye.

Simply stated, peace was given chance after chance and guess what, it failed.

And when you consider that if the terrorists would stop attacking Israel then Israel would sit at home and do nothing - you realize that the violence isn't a cycle at all.

The whole response reminds me of the nonsense I used to hear in the school yard...

"It takes two to fight."

Well I learned the hard way

One not fighting back will still get the snot kicked out of him.

Of course when I told the principle that little gem I'd learned I was immediatly disciplined for "talking back."

I guess even the the left didn't understand the meaning of the truth.

jd

The Cycle
There is no cycle. Two separate incursions by terrorists are being dealt with as they have to be, with bloodshed.

The relative peace in Lebanon was used by Hezbollah to rearm with better weapons. The Palestinians were given a dose of democracy and elected Hamas. Ditto in Lebanon, with Hezbollah. Now, some of those citizens will reap as they sowed. A bitter harvest, to be sure, but you can't say they weren't warned.

Iran and Syria are the ones laughing, ready to fight to the last Palestinian or Lebanonese.

If you want to stop the cycle, convince Iran and Syria they need to find other amusement. It will likely be at gunpoint, but so be it.
