Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

No issue discussed in this column has brought in so much virtually unanimous mail, so full of outrage, as the issue of amnesty for illegal aliens living in this country.

Much of this mail also expressed a sense of futility. "What can I do?" these letters and e-mails often asked. "I am just an ordinary citizen."

Sometimes these letters and e-mails said, "I have written my senator" (or representative) -- and either received no reply or got back an obvious form letter, not really responding to the concerns expressed. Some said that they wrote to their local newspaper but these letters were not printed.

"I am just one person," some said. "What difference do my views make?"

What difference? Public outrage made the Senate and the President of the United States back down from their amnesty bill.

That's the bottom line that counts -- not whether you get a personal reply to your letter to a member of Congress or whether your letter to your local newspaper gets printed.

Never think that you don't count. You are what count most of all. Politicians understand votes if they don't understand anything else. They are virtually obsessed with public opinion polls.

Democracy means that each individual voter cannot expect to prevail on every issue because there are other voters with other views. But that does not mean that the public is powerless when a clear majority knows what it wants and doesn't want.

The media, the politicians, and the intelligentsia may all be overwhelmingly on the opposite side but the people will prevail. That is how bilingual education was defeated at the polls in California and why the amnesty bill is now dead in the United States Senate.

Make no mistake about it. The elites always think they know better, that the public's views are just mindless stereotypes or ugly prejudices.

They think we can always be fooled with a little rhetoric and clever political spin. Sometimes these elites succeed in confusing the issues and pulling a fast one on the public. But, as Abraham Lincoln said long ago, "You can't fool all the people all the time."

No small part of the outrage over the immigration issue came from people's sense that their intelligence was being insulted by those they elected.

The biggest insult was the endlessly repeated claim that illegal aliens "take jobs that Americans won't take." Even in agriculture, where illegal aliens have their biggest impact, three quarters of the workers are not -- repeat, not -- illegal aliens.

In some particular localities, some particular work may be done primarily by illegal aliens. But that does not mean that this work would go undone without them. More pay attracts more people.

New York's mayor Michael Bloomberg is still pushing the line that there would be economic collapse without illegal immigrants. But, despite the scary picture of 12 million illegals being suddenly deported, the cold fact is that 12 million young Americans in the prime of life were removed from our economy to go into the military during World War II and the economy did not collapse.

These 12 million young men went into the military a lot faster than 12 million illegals can be rounded up and deported.

Yet the American economy boomed, producing an incredible amount of output, half of it going into the military to equip and support our own troops and to supply the British and the Russians with vast amounts of war materiel.

Incidentally, the real issue is not how feasible it is to round up and deport 12 million illegals. The real issue is how you prevent 12 million from becoming tens of millions more by allowing amnesty.

There were only about 3 million illegal aliens when an amnesty bill was passed 20 years ago, leading that number to quadruple. Do we want today's 12 million illegals to quadruple?

The other big insult to our intelligence was the claim that amnesty is not amnesty when you call it something else. But, when the people didn't buy it, the politicians had to stop selling it.

Thank You
Thank you Mr. Sowell for once again telling it like it is.

I don't know anyone who is opposed to legal immigrants coming to this country and becoming citizens but giving amnesty to illegals does not make them legal; it only gives them a sense of entitlement.

A good column as usual!
And although I agree with Dr. Sowell in all that he said here. I have to wonder about the 'true' power of the Majority. It's no wonder that many of us feel as you describe. When we see time and time again the Majority ignored or over ridden by some Liberal judge. If opinion polls are now the only thing that will get their attention. We are indeed in big trouble, given the way these polls are constructed and by whom.

Plus, I do not feel the people have won on amnesty in any way. It's only been delayed while they build a different scheme to put it over on us.

THE WORLD WAR TWO ANALOGY IS GOOD
However with respect to making your voice heard, so to say, as Washington and it's residents respect opinion polls? I sent a ton of emails to both the President and Vice President urging them to actively prosecute the SWIFT leakers if not only for legality by for the sake of the Republican Party. So far, my original prediction has come to pass, that they would bluster and pontificate for several days and the whole story would disappear.
Also, as pointed out by Goshawk, when the People do make their feelings known, it is cancelled out by a liberal judge enforcing the true agenda of the liberal left's idea of government. Government by fiat.

Excellent article
Could we please have a "Polling 101" class.

Sometimes a pollster calls and you're busy and just want it over so you say whatever you think will get them to back away. DON'T DO THAT!

If you get in a poll and no answer appears right to you - say so. Don't play their game - play yours. It's the only way to MAKE them listen to you.

It takes some determination and maybe your dinner will get cold - but then you ARE HEARD and that's what microwaves were made for.

You see, bottom line on polls is that they have to get X number of answers and MOST can't substitute their own choices for yours.

And all those letters and bricks are helping.

Republic, not democracy!!
"Sometimes these elites succeed in confusing the issues and pulling a fast one on the public. But, as Abraham Lincoln said long ago, "You can't fool all the people all the time."

Come on, Dr. Sowell, that's why the Founders abhorred democracy. As Lincoln said, "You can't fool all the people all the time", but that is not necessary for democracy to do it's evil. See, all that is required is to fool most of the people some of the time.

For the past century, Americans have been brainwashed with "democracy". It started with Woodrow Wilson interjecting America into WWI with his slogan, "To make the world safe for Democracy", and culminated with driving the nail in the republic's coffin with the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution. And the brainwashing continues to this day with our current President's continuous blabbering over "democracy".

It's almost conspiratorial, this infactuation with transforming America into a democracy. The big question is, "why"?

That's just a rhetorical question. It's because "most of the people can be fooled some of the time".

immigration
We don't have to Round up and ship them back. What needs to be done is, enforce the laws that fines employers for hiring illegals, and deny education, health and all other social benefits to illigals. If this was don't they would have no reason to stay here and they would return on their on.

Amnesty's Death is greatly exaggerated
A great article as usual from Mr. Sowell, but I believe that the death knell for amnesty is far from being wrung. As Goshawk stated the politicians are busy building another scheme that they will try and pass off as "not amnesty". If you need proof then check out the Pence plan or hit the link on this page to the Michael Barone column titled "Life for Immigration Reform". There is a strong and powerful alliance of groups working overtime to preserve the status quo of open borders and the large pool of low wage workers that it brings -- Pandering Politicians, low-wage employers, immigration rights attorneys and advocates, and activist judges. None of them give a damn about the will of the American people or compliance with the current laws on the books.

Don't think for a second that amnesty is dead. It's like Jason from those Friday the 13th movies -- it will keep coming back and back just when you think it has finally been slain. In fact my money is on amnesty becoming a reality. Just like pork barrel spending the benefits accrue to a well organized vocal minority while the costs are spread amongst a mostly uninformed uncaring majority. That's how so much garbage passes through the beltway that would never pass as a majority opinion or budgetary priority of the American people. The furor will die down and these groups will go back to work to bring us "new" and "improved" not-amnesty in some 3,000 page complicated program that nobody will understand or care to investigate the details. Even if well-intentioned the enforcement mechanisms will be watered down by activist judges and the execution part of the new system will be bungled by overwhelmed and incompetent bureacrats.

I haven't given up hope and I still maintain at least a ray of hope that the line will be held with an enforcement only bill and zero tolerance stand on illegal immigration, but this is the reality of the situtation those holding my view face. Again, amnesty is far from dead. American citizens cannot tire of this issue and the emails and letters have to continue. You can bet the other side with so much to gain will not simply roll over and concede.

People Power and Amnesty
Any American who truly believes that he/she have no voice in these matters is either too lazy to do anything to prevent it or does not feel it worth the effort to see that their voice is heard. The statement "my one voice means nothing" really means that I do not understand people power or I'm too busy enjoying my free benefits that others provide me with.

I am a charter member of NumbersUSA, a not for profit organization that has only "one" goal and purpose. That is to make our borders safe while stopping amnesty and fixing an immigration program that has not worked for decades.

If you take to heart Tom Sowell's comments, and this is a very learned man, we can prevent another amnesty and make our immigration program what it should be.

We, at NumbersUSA number 200,000 at this writing and stand up and take full credit for stopping the stupid Senate bill and supporting totally the House bill that outlaws amnesty. We are provided free access to data concerning illegal immigration and the means, through their website, of contacting by fax any and all members of Congress. Our knowledge base is constantly kept updated on what is happening in Washington, DC.

NumbersUSA also has many skilled people on the ground calling on key members of Congress to push for a bill that would begin fixing our terrible immigration program. I spend perhaps one hour a week involved in making contact with my congressional representatives demanding that the Senate adopt the House bill rather than their own.

This organization has grown by over 50,000 additional members in just the past 4-5 months.
We understand that the PEOPLE have real power and it has been proven over and over again. President Bush has been pushing for an amnesty all year and has been stopped several times from creating an amnesty. People who are members of NumbersUSA have sent millions of faxes to representatives and made millions of phone calls expressing their opinion in just the past few months.

Trust me if your Senator received (in one day)thousands of faxes damning the plan he is supporting, he is going to back off and not be willing to jump into an amnesty plan. Our efforts have had many members of Congress change sides in this battle.

Please take time to check out NumbersUSA.com and join in this battle we have been fighting for over a year. WE CAN STOP THIS!!!!!!!!!

A senator who voted with CONVICTION...
...OR NOT!

In a letter to my senator (Sen. Craig R-Idaho), I expressed my opposition to the senate bill & his (Craig's) vote for it. Idaho's other Republican Senator (Crapo) voted against.

In Sen. Craig's reply to me he spent several paragraphs justifying his position. In the penultimate paragraph he said something to the effect that "...this bill will never be passed into law...but" (I'm sorry but I trashed the email).

So, Sen. Craig "knows" the senate legislation will not stand but voted for it anyway. With whom is he currying political favor and why?

we will not have to "ROUND UP" 12
million illegals and send them a'packin'. Obviously it would make much more sense to get them movin' on along of their own free will. By making it way too painful to get caught hiring them or renting housing to them we remove the reason for them to be here. By banning any one caught here illegally from any (possible) worker program in the future they have the incentive to "get in line and do it right". Also just as a thought a federal surcharge of 17% on money wires and transfers from illegals to their families would recover some of the taxes the IRS is unable to collect from their under the table and off the book jobs.

People Power
An open comment to the President.

Mr. President Sir , we have lost Washington State , Oregon , California , Arizona , New Mexico and now Texas to Illegal Immigration.

They are marching in our streets demanding the same rights our forefathers fought and died for to give us. The same rights you and your fellow Politicians are legislating away.

Mr. President , your Father and the last 5 Presidents have given amnesty in the disguise of Immigration Reform Acts to over 30 million Illegal Mexican Immigrants. We cannot as a Nation maintain our Heritage if you Sir , continue to reward illegal behavior.

When we voted you back into office we gave you an agenda , and at the top of that agenda was Illegal Immigration Control.

You said after Katrina the buck stops here.

Well , it's time to stand up like the Great President we know you are and take control of the tide of Illegal Immigration by the horns , before the US/Mexico Border becomes our Gaza Strip.

So, for the Love of God Sir , do something.

Thank You,

Illegal Aliens
Dear Mr. Sowell:

And here I thought I didn't matter. I knew I was part of the great majority on this matter, but I truly believed that the minority rules.

I bombarded Senators Lugar and Bayh with my opinion (a rose by any other name ...) that amnesty is amnesty. I can't imagine any spin on that.

I did want the aliens deported. I did not and do not go for the revolving alien door.

I do not approve of employers who pull a fast one on the rest of the country and don't pay their fair share of practically anything.

I do not approve of pregnant aliens leaping tall buildings, etc. to make sure their offspring are born Americans.

I complained to my Senators that aliens are aliens. I complained that they are wiping out emergency rooms right and left. I complained that the billions (okay, millions) of aliens means that soon there will be no middle class. I am one of those who, correctly or not, believes that the middle class is truly the backbone of the nation. I do not want to see them turned into the backside of the nation.

I have done my share of free speech on this matter, and I hope that some of my rants reach the ears and minds of those in Washington who are serving at our pleasure. Some of the time, anyhow.

Thank you for your columns, none of which I miss. At least I hope I don't.

To Tim in Idaho
Tim:
As I recall, the President of the United States said something similar about the McCain-Feingold bill to limit political discourse.

He said something to the effect that this bill would never pass muster with the US Supreme Court, so that there was no (political) downside to his signing it.
Well, surprise! surprise!

Continue to hold his feet to the fire.

Only if facts mattered
Polls show that most people do want border security, but a majority are not against some sort of path to citizenship. However, Sowell tries to insinuate that most everyone believes "amnesty" is god awful and only media elites disagree. A Fox News polls shows that 63% are in favor of some sort of worker program. 66% favor allowing more legal immigration. Also, as far as media elites, has anyone been watching CNN lately? I would say it has been mostly one sided in its coverage. Dobbs in particular has been a demagogue on immigration for years.

New media empowers people...

“Make no mistake about it. The elites always think they know better, that the public's views are just mindless stereotypes or ugly prejudices.” –Thomas Sowell

Thanks to the new media for getting the message out so “we the people” can be informed. The old media has given up its primary duty to inform the public, choosing rather to deceive us and promote its own world view. They then accuse Americans of “mindless stereotypes or ugly prejudices” when we don’t agree with them. Liberalism’s strangle hold on us is dieing.

No matter what they wanted to call their bill, the result would be an increase in illegal immigration. Let’s send these folks a message they will understand: vote ALL those in favor of amnesty out of office.

The truth behind the “ugly prejudice” is that Americans can be against immigration that’s ILLEGAL while fully supporting legal immigration.

Socialism/Communism
This is the root of socialism/communism, an elite who think they know better than the masses, the masses must be told what to do, how to do it and when to do it, the elixar of the socialist, and it has proven to be a failure, immigration is just another issue that is dealt with in the same manner, the antidote is free and open information, free markets, a varied perspective via Foxnews, talk radio, the internet, we are pushing back the mainstream media disinformation of the last 40 years, it will take decades but we will get to a midpoint where 2 logical perspectives can compete openly.

Ilegal Immigration
Great article, Mr. Sowell.

One of the arguments for amnesty is "it is impossible to deport 12 million illegal aliens".
That is true if you expect to do it over night but if we ship back all that are in our jails/prisons and every time an officer stops one for driving without a license or for gang activity or other crime, (s)he is shipped immediately to the middle of Mexico, we would soon have far fewer of them here.

Minority Vs. Minority
I'm trying to get over the fact that a black man, Mr. Thomas Sowell, who wrote this article is against immigration to the U.S. by minority,
primarily hispanics.

Lets' cut through the smokescreen. Opposition to illegal immigration to the U.S. by Repubs/Cons,
is based on racism and xenophobia.

Sure, they will tell you it's all about "enforcing the law", but the reality is that they dont want massive influx of Hispanics into the U.S. because they are landing an settling in "their" states, cities,& neighborhood and it's making them very uncomfortable just as the blacks did which caused "white flight".

It really doesnt matter if the immigration is legal or illegal to repubs/cons. They dont want "those people" here period.

Fox News
I've read several comments citing the new media and Fox news in particular as an outlet to expose the disasters of the various amnesty immigration bills. Manx, though I totally disagree with him on this issue, brings up a couple of polls conducted by Fox news to buttress his belief that American public opinion really does favor amnesty.

My point is that Fox news is definitely not a voice for conservatives in expressing our dissatisfaction with the various amnesty proposals. As far as I know all of the major "conservative" pundits and executives at Fox news are pro-amnesty -- Brit Hume, William Kristol, Fred Barnes, Bill O'Reilly, and Tony Snow (now departed for the White House). I put conservative in quotations because I just don't see how anyone who truly considers themselves to be a conservative can in any way support the idea of amnesty. I don't know why Fox News is so far from the reservation on this extremely important issue for conservatives. Perhaps they are not so conservative as many of us thought, perhaps their heads have swelled into elitist thinking with their success and inside the beltway atrophy from the conservative heartland. I really don't know. What I do know is that conservatives outraged at the idea of amnesty will not find a voice for their ideas on Fox news!

It's sad when conservatives have to go to CNN to find a perspective on immigration that mirrors their own. I disagree with Lou Dobbs on his protectionist trade policy views, but he is right on the money with his outcry against this invasion from the south.

Fox News offers good coverage
I think Fox news has good and fair converage on the immigration issue. They balance time between the two sides. CNN, on the other hand, is quite one-sided. You only have to look at the show "Lou Dobbs Tonight" for evidence of that. Anyone is free to enjoy Dobb's show, but there is no question that his show is very slanted and biased on both trade and immigration. He also only reads the viewer e-mail that agrees with him and kisses his butt.

I SWORE TO GOD I WOULDN'T BUT.......
In response to Left Angle's statements: There is no finer example I've seen in all of his/her postings such as this one. It brilliantly and concisely represents liberal shortsigtedness and the subliminal racism akin to the very best propaganda put out by the likes of Goebbels, Stalin and Castro.
Before the rest of you readers get on my case for giving this person too much credit, just hear me out.
In his last posting with regard to the SWIFT revelations, he refers to Dr. Sowell as "Uncle Tom," which is in and of itself a dead giveaway. Now, in this person's posting today he has difficulty reconciling how Dr. Sowell, a black man, could be opposed to immigration of minorities or as they are better known, illegal aliens. He takes Dr. Sowell to task for not conforming to his idea of a proper black man, a dashiki and Kobi hat wearing provacatuer angrily decrying the "white establishment" while at the same time pumping his fist wildly in the air in the now famous "black power" salute. Does he have to rap and breakdance to further meet your criteria ?Like all on the left he/she is totally captivated with substance & sterotype and fails to recognize that we rational, right thinking people judge a person on the content of their charecter/brain and not the color of their skin. Hackneyed, I know.
He/she also presents the same tired mantra that goes something like this:
Illegal aliens do not contribute to the tax base.
"You're just a racist"
Illegal aliens drive down the payscales of various occupations.
"You're just a xenophobe."
Illegal aliens in some cases overrun suburban settings to serve and support unscrupulous landlords and drive down home values where people struggle to maintain the Amercan dream.
"You just don't want brown people in your neighborhood."
Illegal aliens overburden our already stressed to max schools and hospitals.
"Ah, Ah, you're just a racist."
And so on. And so on. And so on. Just like the Pantene commercial.
I have my suspicions about this particular person. One of them being that by the tone and tenor of all of his/her remarks, a good cure for his/her type of liberalism would be to move out of Mommy and Daddy's house and start making their own way in the world. If that is not the case, he/she is even dumber than he/she thinks I think they are.
Ahhh, what's a good liberal word? Cathartic. Yeah, that's it.

Fox News Post explained further
Manx, One of these days I might actually be able to figure out how to respond to a specific comment on the "new" and "improved" Townhall but until then I am afraid I will have to do it on an independent thread. Anyway...

Yes, the Lou Dobbs show essentially presents one man's viewpoint. It is essentially an opinion show, and one I don't really watch that often mostly because I am not able to at the hour it is on. I even feel like I have joined an unholy alliance with him (sort of like the allies including Stalin and the USSR due to a mutual enemy) because I certainly disagree with his protectionist business and trade ideas. I have however seen him interview many advocates and politicians that differ from him on immigration. But again, I don't think that there is any prextext by CNN or Lou Dobbs himself that his show is anything other than a reporting of the business and financial news according to Lou Dobbs... and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you understand that going in.

I have seen many interviews on Fox news in which the supposed conservative viewpoint on immigration is some Republican Party insider smoking-hot-babe that talks about as tough on immigration as George Bush and John McCain. In other words the balanced viewpoint is in no way capturing the stance of the true conservatives in the Republican party (which numerically dwarfs the RINO's, unfortunately though not in positions of power and leadership). The main thrust of my prior post is that Fox news is not the conservative mouthpiece that so many viewers on this site seem to believe. Of all the "conservative" pundits and executives running Fox News, Sean Hannity is the only one that I know whom consistently voices the anti-amnesty outcry.

Fox news probably only seems conservative when compared with the other news organizations. And when CNN has a more powerful voice against amnesty then anyone on Fox news then you know that Fox news sure ain't that conservative.

Left Angle is always the Wrong Angle
I am sure that this person thinks that they are enlightening us silly Repub/conser people here. But all they are doing is showing us a great example of liberal ignorance.

Kali, Malou, Left Angle and the rest of the liberal trolls always help make our points with their liberal non-sense!

Instead of being critical of a conservative position on an issue, they simply call conservatives racists or xenophobic. I guess they are just following Harry Reid's lead.

Fix Root Causes
Secure the border and remove the incentives that make people trek into our country. I am insulted by the same excuses and agree our economy does NOT depend on illegal immigrants. Congress putting forth a bill in the name of "doing something" is not good. The good news is that no bill came out and yes, America, you did change the rhetoric of the President and Congress. Perhaps now we can do this with National Security as a priority. Keep up the awesome work Mr. Sowell.

Our Elected Officials
The only thing career politicians understand is unemployment.

Yes, some of them have served us well over the years. We have enjoyed the fruits of their labor. The time has come for us to go our seperate ways. Their usefulness is used up. We do wish them well.

Finding new help to fill the positions vacated will take time and patience. The positions are important and we may have to try several new employees before finding that RIGHT individual that can serve us well.

I refuse to vote out of FEAR!

Let's start doing what is RIGHT for the United States. Doing what is right is never wrong. If only our employees (elected officials) understood this we might be able to keep them a while longer.

Oh well...

Compromise
To those who think it is not feasible to deport 12 million illegal aliens, I have a compromise: we're willing to keep a few hundred of the prettiest senoritas, but the other 11,999,500 illegals have to go home.

Vote for Whom?
When voting for Senator in Ohio in November, the question is, "Vote for whom?" The incumbent Republican Senator voted for the immigration bill. (I got the same boring form letter email response to all the emails I sent him on this subject.) The challenging Democrat is also in favor of the Senate immigration bill. So in the Ohio Senate race, there's no way to vote against amnesty.

Regarding "jobs that Americans won't do," couldn't unemployed Americans receiving welfare be doing some of these jobs?

The mayor of NYC is correct
Yes, mayor Bloomberg is correct,
there will be a economic collapse,
of the Welfare Industry, without illegal
immigrants who are willing to wait in line for
the handouts that Americans won't wait in line
to take. Not only is there a Welfare Industry,
there are welfare go-betweens that bring
people into this country, helping them
to sign up, helping them to find housing,
helping them to cache their government checks.

As a resident, taxpayer, and landlord in
Massachusetts since the 1980's I saw this
first hand, in cities such as Cambridge,
Lowell, Lawrence.

There are Community Development Corporations
(CDC's), and all manner of well connected wealthy
people who depend for tax breaks and government
business on this industry.

Illegal Alien Plan
Secure the border and simultaneously hit the employers of illegals. Hit them with fines and charges regarding conspiracy to evade income taxes. That is they have effectively created occupants of our country that have failed to pay taxes. If this is done immigration authorities could finance their own activities with the fines. Make it a point to initially deport all convicted felons that are illegals and not put them on probation. It is likely that if an atmosphere of no employment opportunities for illegals they will go back where they came from. We do not need any new stinking laws. We just need to enforce the ones we have on the books now.

Left angle is a liar or a fool
Left Angle makes the argument that Mr. Sowell
is against immigration. Nonsense. Mr. Sowell
is against Illegal immigration.
Left Angle argues that Repubs are against Illegal immigration. Nonsense. President Bush seems to be pushing amnesty pretty hard.

Left Angle argues that Repubs are Xenophobes. And yet, the Bush White house has more blacks in positions of power than the "Black president" Bill Clinton.
Why are most Cubans conservative? Because they believe in hard work and family values. Not because of their color. Why is Lynn Swann running as a REpublican for senate?

I am a little surprised that this lefty does not see how Illegal's are pushing down the living wage for "The Poor" in America. Oh, Yeah, being on the left means failure to understand the law of supply and demand.

Let me try to explain it. If it is easy to find people who are willing to work for $3 per hour, why would any business hire a person who wanted to work for the minumum wage.
Any good Business man will tell you, it is not the color of their skin, it is how much money your employee makes for you, or saves you, that determines his worth to the company.

Furthermore..
I have read the criticisms of my post below and those responses are typical of repubs/cons so, it doesnt bother me in the least. I stand by my comments as being totally realistic.

the great majority of Hispanic immigrants are settling in areas in the midwest and south, areas known for blatant racial discrimination,
hatred and intolerance. There is no way you can sit here and tell me that all those phone calls & e-mails coming into U.S. Congressment from their constituents to "do something about this immigration issue" isn't based on their racist feelings about the invasion of the hispanics in their states, cities and neighborhoods. They dont want them here PERIOD. Legal or illegal.
The "enforce the law" argument is nothing but a smokescreen of political correctness for the repubs/cons on this issue that mask their true feelings that the really want to "deport the whole lot of them" back to Mexico/South America.

The underlying problem is ....
... mass LEGAL immigration. It's essentially out of control, too. (Also, the categories of "asylum" and "refugee" have become fraudulent highways to legal immigration, via the back door, so to speak.)

Remember, the abomination the Senate passed (S2611) essentially makes illegal immigration legal. So if you only object to illegal immigration, what is there left for you to complain about once the borders have been thrown open and it's all declared "legal"?

In truth, most of the problems people associate with illegal immigration (while saying "We like legal immigration!") are the problems of mass immigration in general. To acquaint yourself with the full panoply of these problems, read the 20 mini-essays in the collection "Common Sense on Mass Immigration," available online at www [dot] CommonSenseOnMassImmigration [dot] US , or just Google on "common sense on mass immigration."

Once there at the entry page, go to "Contents." I recommend that you first read the eighth essay, "Basic Freedoms," by John Vinson.

This is no invasion.
Normally, in "invasions," the host country has not invited the "invaders."

In this case, we've invited all 12 million, or whatever the number.

Don't know if our economy would collapse without them or not, but our sacred businesses definitely think so.

Over and over and over and over and over . . .

Illegals
Yes, our voices are making a difference. Go to Numbers USA to send faxes, find phone numbers etc. I throw them a few coins to help with this. Take the time once a week to hammer away folks.

With regards

Take Action
I must admit that I am one of those people who has said: "How much power do I have? I'm just one person." I said this about many issues that I held dear to my heart. Illegal immigration was the first issue to which I formed a response. I created my own form letter and I sent it out to my Congressman, my President and my Senators. I must say I was surprised by the response. One Senator sent me a letter stating his prognosis for the matter, what he planned on doing and how he planned on doing it. The other provided me with his rhetoric on the topic, and how I was wrong and misinformed in my beliefs. This fella really irritated me, and led me to believe he will be having a tough time when his November rolls around in '08. The Congressman was a pleasant surprise. He provided me with a photocopy of a Congressional quarterly article detailing his actions on the issue of Illegal Immigration. He coupled this with a personal form letter detailing how he planned to act in the future.

The letters, for me anyway, were a surprising tribute to the power of our Representative Republic and Sowell's theme in this article of the power of one voice.
