Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

There is an often quoted letter that is used to illustrate how people resist change and the creative destruction that free-enterprise can create. Enjoy this letter for the historical perspective it provides: January 21, 1829

To President Jackson,

The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as "railroads." The federal government must preserve the canals for the following reasons:

One. If canal boats are supplanted by "railroads," serious unemployment will result. Captains, cooks, drivers, hostlers, repairmen and lock tenders will be left without means of livelihood, not to mention the numerous farmers now employed in growing hay for the horses.

Two. Boat builders would suffer, and towline, whip and harness makers would be left destitute.

Three. Canal boats are absolutely essential to the defense of the United States. In the event of the expected trouble with England, the Erie Canal would be the only means by which we could ever move the supplies so vital to waging modern war.

As you may well know, Mr. President, "railroad" carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of fifteen miles per hour by "engines" which, in addition to endangering life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside, setting fire to crops, scaring the livestock and frightening women and children. The Almighty certainly never intended that people should travel at such breakneck speed.

Modern transportation
In my estimation rail is a far more efficient method of moving freight, years ago trucks and there unions edged the R.Rs. from the leading edge on freight moving, just try to relegate trucks(think teamsters) to there rightful spot in the freight moving business today, probably impossible.

Automobiles vs. Railroads!
The current worldwide economic chaos is a direct consequence of dwindling [and therefore increasingly expensive] petroleum sources. Bad loans? Sure...but those loans were based upon the assumption they'd be plentiful and cheap oil available perpetually. When oil is $40 per barrel no producer can afford to drill [and there's less and less remaining in the ground]and when oil begins the climb to $150 per barrel the economy slows accordingly. I suggest that we let the automobile industry die a natural death and see if the private enterprise system comes up with a viable alternative. The expeditious expansion of rail for transportation of people and goods looks increasingly attractive...and railroads have always been built with government subsidies [the Union Pacific's initial transcontinental link is a prime example]. The billions we are spending on the various [never ending] bailouts are throwing good money after bad...and those dollars would build a lot of track.
