Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In monarchies, kings and queens use the first person plural. They are "we."

Judging from his inaugural address, President Barack Obama may give this practice a modern American liberal twist. He calls big government "we."

Obama's speech was a carefully crafted self-contradiction, with a beginning and end that could have been delivered by a conservative and a middle that envisioned government unleashed from constitutional restraints.

At the beginning, Obama celebrated the risk-taking, pioneering spirit, the ethic of individual initiative and self-reliance that made America great.

"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned," he said. "Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the fainthearted, for those who prefer leisure over work or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather it has been the risk takers, the doers, the makers of things -- some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor -- who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom."

At the end, Obama invoked God and freedom.

"Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested, we refused to let this journey end," he said, "that we did not turn back, nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

Who could argue with that?

Well, presumably the "nonbelievers" to whom Obama paid tribute in the heart of his speech.

It was in that part -- after he celebrated the risk-taking makers of things and before he saw God's grace shining down on the carriers-forth of freedom -- that Obama proposed a list of things "we" are going to do.

In fact, the defining passage of Obama's speech included a "we" in every sentence, and it was soon apparent that he was not talking about "We the People" but "we the government."

"For everywhere we look, there is work to be done," he said. "The state of our economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do."

Any doubt that Obama was talking about "we the government" doing each of those things or compelling others to do them was settled a few sentences later, when he declared a premature victory in the debate over the legitimate role of government in our lives.

"What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them -- that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply," he said. "The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works -- whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified."

Here Obama contradicted the risk-takers-and-makers rhetoric from the beginning of his speech, just as his invocation of God's grace at the end contradicted his declaration in the middle that "we are a nation of nonbelievers."

At the beginning of his speech, Obama said, "We the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents."

But even as his oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" faded into the winter air, he rejected any limit on government other than "whether it works."

If President Obama were to go back and read the founding document whose first three words are "We the People," he would discover that from beginning to end, it limits the power of government.

I am afraid
"we" will be taking all of my money and spending it as "we" see fit.

What
else can we expect from a graduate of Columbia and Harvard, institutions that have reneged on
their mandate for academic freedom (except for some enlightened people who yearn for Lenin),
and in Harvards case, backslid from it's inception as a college to train ministers, now Christianity is an anathema on that campus. I don't know much about Columbia but presumably it had the same beginnings on Judeo/Christian
values.
If you haven't been taught yourself about the Foundations of this country and it's Constitution you are going to think "we" is
government not "We the People"..

Dems won't solve the problem they caused
Representation without taxation will be the death of the unique American Way where effort was rewarded. Socialism makes sure sloth is rewarded. Obama's "change" will be to the latter system that has failed everywhere it's become dominant.

48% of the electorate pays no taxes and yet retains the right to vote themselves more and more goodies from those who do.

Obama will not be running a Robin Hood government where Robin "refunded" money to the the overtaxed peasants but a Sheriff of Nottingham government, robbing workers to reward the idle.

America's leftist public schools and most universities churn out not only math and science but also economic illiterates who failed to understand that it was the socialistic policies of congressional Democrats forcing banks into house loans to people who had no money and no jobs that started the economic cataclysm. They promptly elected the same dummies who caused the problem and a marxist president to do their ignorant bidding. Brilliant.

This wrecking crew will push the USA from the recession they caused to depression, all because too many Americans elected someone on the basis of his looks, like American Idol.

The media has shamed itself by acting like a teenage girl, swooning over unqualified Obama who hasn't run a phone booth and his back up band, the Clinton Retreads.

But what does it DO?
""The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works. . . ." -- Barack Obama

"I have seen the future, and it works." -- Lincoln Steffens on the Soviet Union (1919)

"Every system is perfectly designed to achieve exactly the results it gets." -- Paul Batalden

With all due respect (not much) to the new president, we found out long ago that big government performs splendidly at producing what big government produces: waste, fraud, bloat, careerism, inefficiency, insensitivity, unresponsiveness, incompetence, arrogance, opacity, meddling, stagnation, lack of opportunity, dependence, injustice, oppression. . .The question is whether we want still more of all this.

Note to naysayers: yes, only big government could've pulled off the Normandy invasion and the Manhattan Project or temporary victory in the Cold War. But those were responses to evils done and threats offered by other big governments.

Self fulfilling prophecy
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence; from bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependency back again into bondage." Any questions?

To fellow unbelievers…

Mr. Jeffrey, from a fellow “unbeliever” thanks and well said. How is it that “we the people” support the soft tyranny of socialism over liberty?

Our President misspoke. "We the people have [NOT] remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents." Nor do we understand the first things of liberty; those things that inspired the men that produced the founding documents. It was not big government, but freedom from tyranny that inspired them. They had something that government cannot give us, tough by the hands of unprincipled men it takes from us.

n2win
Your oft-quoted quote is once again highly appropriate. Once again it is being proved that a democracy destroys itself. The Founding Father's, wise and educated men all, knew this. This is why they did not establish a democracy, but a republic. Under the original constitution, only about 1/12 of the people who voted in Obama would be qualified to vote. Over the years, politicians realized they could mine these "outsiders" for votes and the vote was extended until the ultimate lunacy--making it de facto possible for illegal aliens to vote. Except for repealing restrictions on the franchise for ethnic background, this reduction of qualifications to vote has put us where we are. A return to reasonable qualifications would cure our problems, but that is impossible. Just as no legislator is going to pass a lwa that reduces his power just because it would be good for the country, so no voter is going to give up his vote just because it would be good for the country.
Stagnation and irrelevance are our fate. Thank goodness i was born in the lucky days and managed to put away enough assets to maintain a flotable platform on the seas of inflation, confiscatory taxation, and nanny government mismanagement. It is the young and poor who have terminated their chances to advance, but that is only just. They are the ones who chose this path. They will soon find out that one does not get raises on welfare, or develop saleable skills, nor does hard work gain an advantage. 3 strikes and out.

SHHHHH!
You're not supppose to actually be llistening to this speech stuff the One does so well. you're supposed to be noticing the steel glint of resolve in his eys - the messianic uplift of his chin - the gleam of his golden skin - the pursing of his thin lips - the alway present holo around his head (we'll skip the ears for now.)

This is by far the best job in analysing his speech -a blend of Marx and FDR speak - a Hollywood production made for the history books.

So far, Obama has proven to be a living Roscharche blot: about being black and white - empty of recognizable substance and above all, an image made to allow for all to see whatever they please.

"We"
Or was he saying "Wii" as in "Wii would like to play".

Maybe that's his plan. He wants us all to play a video game for the next four years. And while we're distracted bowling, he secretly implements his socialist agenda.

Point of order
Mr. Jeffery complains of the speech that it has "a middle that envisioned government unleashed from constitutional restraints". Excuse me but, what constitutional restraints? The government has not had restraint of any sort since FDR. And often the greatest offenders of the constitution are conservatives! Nixon--removing us from the gold standard. Reagan--pursuing an illegal war in Latin american in open defiance to the Congress. Bush I--two undeclared wars against two countries that had neither attacked nor invaded us (Panama, Iraq). Bush II--by far the worst President in history in terms of civil rights, and expansion of government. Readers of this site already know the misdeeds of the Liberals. But the problem is not big government run by conservatives or liberals. The problem is government, period. No human has ever come up with a way to keep government small. The solution is not constitutional government; it is NO government.

Pistol
What are the qualifications that you would like to see be used to determine the right to vote? Land ownership? Gender? Racial background? What?

It is not the extension of the franchise that is the problem, it is the lack of knowledge of the voters. Many vote for people on name recognition, for how they look, for the speeches they deliver, yet rarely take the time to understand the isssues and causes these politicians support.

But I would never want to return to a system where a minority of the population was a defacto oligarchy ruling over those they deemed unworthy to vote on the very governments that had rule over them. That allows for a small group to impose its will on the majority, and reduces citizenship to nothingness. When a landed gentry gets to set the rules for citizenship, you can just about guarantee that only the gentry will be citizens. And what would happen if YOU were deemed unworthy of the franchise?

the world celebrate
Day two time to go to work. President Obama now is responsible for what happen in Iraq, his opinion about Garza is important to all the world and he has an illegal alien problem in the United States. Why is the Obama administration not advertising the financial reward being offered by the Mexican government.

Voting Qualifications
Not to jump in on your question to Pistol there Edamon50, but here's a list of items that should be met in order to qualify you to have the right to vote:

1) Be a citizen of the US
2) Speak English
3) Pass a basic knowledge exam of US history and government
4) NEVER have comitted a felony
5) Not currently on welfare (with the exception of total disabilities)
6) Be alive

It'll never happen though. It's just a pipe dream I have.

contradiction
You mention that "At the beginning of his speech, Obama said, 'We the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents.'" Then you criticize him for using "we" repeatedly, even claiming he's some sort of monarchist.

Corndog
We can agree on points 1&2&6, but from that point on I have some questions.

1. What does a basic knowledge of history have to do with voting today? Knowing when the Declaration of Independence was issued has nothing to do with whether or not I support McCain or Obama. Neither does knowing how a bill becomes a law, since we know that what is taught in schools is only the "official" version, but not what really happens in crafting legislation.

2. What happens to those who commit felonies as 18 year olds, do their time, never have another run in with the law, and become law abiding citizens? Should they automatically lose their right to vote forever on the basis of say, possessing enough marijuana for a felony charge to be lodged?

3. What does being on welfare have to do with being able to vote? My family was briefly on welfare during my youth when my mother lost her job; should she have been denied a right to vote because of that circumstance? She was not at fault when a new company bought out her employer and immediately laid off the entire workforce at her facility, but according to your plan she would have been denied her right to vote for the people who allegedly represented her. Does that really make sense to you, or is it just something you think sounds good to everyone else here?

It seems the elected Socialist forgets
HE WORKS FOR US TOO!

His hubris and lies WILL get the better of him and his snake oil salesman skills will not avail...it'll be like watching Rome burn again much to my pleasure..A SHAY's rebellion so as to speak.

I "HOPE" and pray he fails, and it shows the true color of this jerk.. which isn't black or white.. but of him having a yellow streak right down his spine.

All dictators fear the "ONE" who will lead the revolt against them and look of ways to neutralize them.

Our Bill Of Rights is under attack as NEVER before...each Amendment each phrase and each thought is going to be dissected and twisted into what the elected Socialist wants his little nanny state to become.

Well folks..The "Constitutionally Correct" (CC) not the politically correct (pc) population needs to be the "ONE" the elected Sociaist needs to fear...we have to be the "ONE"

I'm CC are you?

Paul at 8:39 am
Are you an anarchist? If so, name one nation where that has worked.

English Comp 101
Hey SJP in DC: that was sort of T.J.'s whole point. Obama uses We the People as a rhetorical flourish, then blatantly announces his intent to govern as We the Government; rejecting the importance of the individual in providing, well, anything of value; up to and including tax revenue.

But I suspect the point is lost on those who have not made the effort to analyze the rhetoric before now.

Fait accompli.

Frankly, I'm not entirely sure why PBO bothered to pen another whopper--unless he seriously believes all that garbage about rebuilding an economy by hiring half the country to dig ditches and the other half to fill them and the third half to administer, print and deliver the paychecks.

For you Obamites who can't/won't analyze rhetoric--that three halves thing was a joke, playing on the notion that Keynesian Economics does not....

Never mind.

Corndog - Qualifications to vote
You left out a couple of groups that should not have the right to vote.

Anyone, such as the over pampered, overpaid, over perked, over pensioned, greedy, ungrateful teachers, cops and all public parasites, i.e. anyone getting a check from any level of government.

To be consistent I must include those on Social Security, even though I am on it.

Why should these individuals be allowed to vote such that they will be able to obtain more and more money from those that provide their checks, i.e. the taxpayers.

And please liberals, don't come back with the BS that cops, teachers, etc. pay taxes too because I can blow that load of crap right out of the water.

BHO--Spam in the Middle
BHO is the master of double speak. There was not a wit of surprise that the "sandwich" presentation had a slice of the good old, honest American values on either end with the liberal meat (the equivalent of moral Spam) in the middle. I thought I saw a carpetbag next to one of the moving vans at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

THE REAL QUESTION MY FRIENDS IS:

not what makes our government work, but how to make it stop.

PATRICK: your post at 10:48 AM, The World Celebrate, ask the question, "why is the Obama administration not advertising the financial reward by the Mexican government?" The latest financial reward from Mexico, just recently announced, that a Mexican billionaire has invested $250 million in the The New Times. That's all this country needs now, a foreign investment in a left wing newspaper. We'll be getting a lot more hype for illegals and amnesty.

Just Words? Just Speeches?
For all the squishy Republicans and conservative writers and authors who have been breathless in their "hope" that some of Obama's cabinet choices were an indication that he would rul ... er govern from the middle, breath into a paper bag, it will calm your hyperventalation.

But make no mistake, what he said is what he meant. Obama is a radical leftist socialist and he intends to make you work for the .... I mean the government work for you.

andrea
Yes, I am an anarchist. Rest assured, it has worked in many instances and in many places throughout history. Some examples include Pacific Islands during their colonization, early Iceland, colonial Pennsylvania, and the American frontier in the 19th century. Partial anarchy has existed and flourished in many areas as well. The early days of telegraph, the early days of radio, and, probably the most significant area of anarchy ever--the internet. Check out Lewrockwell.com, strike-the-root.com for starters.

Where Should We Go
...now that both parties of our government have destroyed our government, and the general American population is too Goddamned stupid to vote 3rd Party because the overwhelming majority of Americans do not even know what's in the Constitution in the first place and the MSM has made damn sure they never do know the Constitution or about 3rd Parties? Our ancestors emigrated from Europe for opportunity and freedom in America, but those days are now over. It is time for us Americans who still have sense God gave an ant to leave this once-great but now hopelessly ignorant nation that is beyond repair - having been ravaged by Liberals in every echelon of government, culture, academia, and society. America is under God's Judgment. It will continue to get ONLY WORSE and WORSE. 911 will pale in comparison. The best we can do is jump off the sinking ship and emigrate now; the question is where? I'm thinking Australia or Ireland, perhaps? Yes, they might be Socialist, but they haven't quite lost their minds yet like our nation has. I no longer have any faith in Americans or America at all. It is a nation of ignorant fools. It is anti-God, anti-Christian, secular, and it mocks the document it was founded upon. The State government here in Georgia is just a bunch of ignorant, lazy, good ol' boy lawyers who are nothing more than just walking welfare checks. They haven't the balls to even talk of Secession; it is light years away from their imbecilic minds.

...Cont'd
Americans do not even know what the Constitution or Conservatism even mean anymore - both terms having been completely misdefined by both Socialist parties and the neocon, warmongering, eternal-war-who-cares-about-the-pricetag-besides-it's-patriotic-to-kill,kill,kill GOP. We have the ignorance to still call ourselves free! The American experiment is over; it failed miserably! Our lunatic, Biblically illiterate leaders in church, media, and State from both parties, who probably think Ezekiel is some sort of dog's name or Harry Potter character, continue to mock God by dividing the land of Israel and calling this good and fair and politically correct; thus, God's Judgment will continue to destroy America more and more everyday. When God is through with us, 911 will pale in comparison, but we don't want to hear about that now, do we??? Do the smart thing and quit complaining about Illegal Immigration; the time for complaining and protesting is long gone. Illegal Immigration legislation is now likely a matter of a few months away. US Socialism is at your doorstep and is now endorsed by the GOP. Endless, feel-good, world hunger, water pollution, air pollution, global warming, animal extinction, animal endangerment, fossil fuels, soak-the-rich, PC taxes are at your doorstep. Your politicians in either party are not listening to you no matter how many times you write them, call them, yell at them, or email them. Nobody's home and nobody cares! We have become a People without a government representing us and essentially a People without a country. In other words, this is 1776 all over again, but unlike our Founding Fathers, we are leaderless and far too factionalized, complacent, and ignorant to confederate!

...Cont'd
Even Glenn Beck, an Ohio Yankee, admitted on his show last week that the South was right all along about States' Rights, but good luck convincing your State legislatures on that one; they are mostly blithering idiot, brainwashed lawyers living off the taxpayers' dole doing mostly NOTHING for a living but drawing a paycheck and waiting, like Obama, for that big break to make it to DC. Haven't we wasted enough time with the political process in America??? It is USELESS and CORRUPT at so many levels, and by now, you should be rest assured that THEY ARE NOT LISTENING AND WILL NOT LISTEN TO US!! The only choice We The People have now is either to confederate under a 3rd Party or emigrate. The more I analyze the data, the more I am convinced that even 3rd Party prospects, with the current demographics and imminent demographics with the inevitable passing of Illegal Immigration legislation, will be hopeless for America's future. Phil Valentine, the talk show host, said "California is now FOREVER LOST!" I believe now, wholeheartedly, that those of us who are Christians and True Constitutional Conservatives need to emigrate to another country in a MASS EXODUS, the likes of which haven't been seen in quite some time. We tried voting at the ballot, but it does us no good. Let's now vote WITH OUR FEET! America's done; get out while you can!

Paul
All the examples you have given are in locations that were just beginning to be settled. Of course, there was no civil magistrate as there wasn't a need yet. When you look at established nations, anarchy is always followed by a dictatorship, the best example being France after their anarchist "revolution" resulting in an oligarchy by Napoleon.

Men need civil government, or else the Bible wouldn't say this in Romans 13:1-6: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: **For he is the minister of God to thee for good.** But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing."

The question is what type of civil government do men need? The Bible teaches limited civil government, basically to defend against foreign invasion and punish criminals. A moral people will be able to govern themselves in all other areas. And that's where America's problem lies--we are not a moral people.
