Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

When Sen. Ted Kennedy, valiantly fighting brain cancer, took the stage at the Democratic convention on Monday night, he made it clear that he is now on a mission that cannot be completed unless he returns to the Senate next year -- with Barack Obama in the White House.

Kennedy's quest is to socialize medicine in America.

"For me, this is a season of hope," he said. "New hope -- and this is the cause of my life -- new hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American -- North, South, East, West, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege."

The crowd at the convention gave a standing ovation to this radical proposition that falsely equates a proposed new welfare benefit to a "fundamental right."

The American idea of fundamental rights is that they come from God, not government. Government can protect them or violate them, but it cannot give them or take them away. They are inalienable -- even though their exercise is not invulnerable to malevolent, or merely maladroit, public policy.

The Bill of Rights expressly recognizes some real rights and prescribes, in plain language, government's role in relation to them.

"Congress," it says, for example, "shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech."

But even this simple mandate seems to confuse some liberals. They act as if it means Congress can abridge some of the speech of some of the people some of the time, and subsidize some of the speech of other people all of the time. For example, under the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, some groups were prohibited from mentioning the name of a candidate for federal office in an advertisement in the weeks before an election.

On the other hand, there have been liberals who have argued that the First Amendment left Congress no choice but to provide tax dollars to art aficionados who wanted to publicly display photographs of bullwhips inserted into odd body parts and crucifixes submerged in urine. So, too, there are members of Congress who annually insist that freedom of speech requires taxpayers to underwrite "counseling" at Planned Parenthood clinics.

Still, no liberal I know of has ever argued that this perceived First Amendment mandate to subsidize some people's freedom of speech must be extended to everyone. Where, for example, are the liberals who argue that the First Amendment requires Congress to subsidize the freedom of speech of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Mark Levin?

Yet, when Ted Kennedy declared that we must "guarantee that every American -- North, South, East, West, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right" -- an arena full of modern-day Democrats stood up and cheered.

If Americans accept this principle and allow Congress to enact it into law, they will soon find themselves parsing Kennedy's declaration as if it were a sworn statement by Bill Clinton.

The universal right to "decent, quality health care," they will discover, depends on the meaning of "decent" and "quality."

Many liberals, for example, deemed it an act of "decent, quality health care" when a judge ordered the feeding tube yanked from Terri Schiavo. He was respecting her "right" to die -- by ordering her slowly starved and dehydrated to death.

The majority of Oregon voters in 1997 decided that "decent, quality health care" included authorizing doctors to assist sick people in murdering themselves. They called it the "Death With Dignity Act." The U.S. Supreme Court upheld it.

If we claim health care as a "right" from government, we should not be surprised if government, in return, tries to claim our right to life.

Equal Health Care For All
The goal of our health care system should be to provide clear and equal access to vital, comprehensive health care for everyone living in America in an affordable manner. This means clear and equal access to sound, ongoing, independent-from-payer doctor---patient relationships.

Health Care for the WORLD!
What Kennedy means is health care for anyone who caN FLY,WALK OR CRAWL HERE ....AND WITH HIS PAL kERRYS NEW ADMITTANCE TO GAYS WITH aids THE cost and quality will be like nothing ever seen before!

Socialized Medicine
The greatest example of why governments should NOT get involved in (health care), in what should be private enterprise, is Europe! I've lived in Europe as an expat since 1974. My friends are forced into socialized medicine. Those that can afford it have private medical insurance as well. Why? Because you can't get immediate medical attention unless it's an emergency...so everything becomes an emergency. To witness this, all you have to do is visit an emergency room 24/7! Politicians and other elites don't get their health care where the "peasants" do; they get what they want/need from the private sector! The government WANTS you to be dependent. All the more reason to demand higher and higher taxes...and your vote! Anyone who says that European style health care is the answer is either ignorant or a liar!

don't underestimate health care costs
I think the policies of Ted Kennedy on our nation have been devastating.

No one applauds Kennedy and Javits for the Immigration Reform Act of 1965.

Its legacy has changed our nation to its core.

Even Kennedy's and G.W. Bush's NCLB was destructive.

Having said that, I think many folks are underestimating the profound apprehension among Americans on health care costs.

I am not at all certain that the health care agenda she tried to foist on America in the early 1990s would not be received today in a far more favorable light, given the radical costs in health insurance and health care costs.

Don't know what the answer is to this problem.

I am not necessarily advocating socalled socialized medicine.

But the status-quo is not sustainable.

Too many people in our Beloved Republic are struggling with health care costs.

Critical mass has been reached.

Right does not exist ...
I disagree. Kennedy's right is not wrong - it does not even EXIST! Thus, how can anyone talk about something that does not exist? They cannot at least at an intelligent level. So what does that say about Kennedy's career?

Doctork
Single payer health care system is what Canada and socialistic Europe have. Talk about bankrupting our country. A better thought would be to limit Medicare to a very basic plan, but if you want all the bells and whistles, you must pay more premiums. Naturally, if I had my drothers, there wouldn't be any Medicare or Medicaid.

People should be aware
That what we define as "single-payer" health care today is a direct outgrowth of the eugenics movement of the pre-World War Two period. The idea was that government would decide who was "entitled" to what level of health care, based on that person's perceived usefulness to society. One result of this was the forced sterilization of the mentally deficient in government-run mental hospitals in the U.S. and elsewhere in the 1920s and 1930s.

Another result was that the first country to adopt "single-payer health care" used it to deny medical care to groups that country's government defined as "undesirables". Yes, I'm talking about Germany from 1933 to 1945, and Godwin's Law be d***ed.

When you place your health care in the hands of a government, even an elected one, you hand that government the power that all dictators and autocrats lust after in their hearts. The power to decide who lives, and who dies, based solely on their own whims.

But if you look at the policies pursued by "progressives" otherwise (no self-defense against criminals, starve us of energy, etc.), at least this is consistent. They want to decide who gets to live- under their rule.

I don't trust them that far. Yes, our system could be better- but what they are demanding would be much, much worse.

Quality Health Care
It will not only create a new huge government organization, it will be as corrupt as most of the rest. Will more quality care be given to the illegals, rich, poor, black, etc., than others? Certainly there will have to be additional diversity added into the mix. Kennedy's version of everything is marxist, communistic, socialistic, fascist and just plain bad and stupid.

Claim our right to life
Especially since they do not want to have to pay out The Social Security benefits that we have all been putting our collective monies into.

Where did all that money go?

THey will not be able to afford to pay for everyone's healthcare and therefore will systematically get rid of the very people that voted for them.
The elderly and the sick should make a point of not voting Demoncrat.

The free unregulated market works.
The government needs to step aside with all of their regulations and let the market, which is us, come to an equitable solution that will not and can not be perfect in this imperfect world. We all buy other insurance policies on our own why do we need the government horning in on healthcare. No one should get anything for free. If a needy sick person steps into a hospital a charitable organizations should be at their side not the government. That person in exchange can do something to help the charitable organization.

If the US
turns to socialized medicine, where will the Canadians go?

Perhaps you should read "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell.

Your statement of the goal of our health care system is right out of the liberal playbook. You can't be a conservative. Conservatives, if they are to be consistent, regard health care as a commodity to be produced and priced in a free market. This means that high quality health care is available to those who can afford it, and unavailable to those who cannot. Or, more realistically, the more money you have the better will be the health care you can purchase.

Conservatives have no use for any alternative to what I just described, not if they understand their own ideology.

Teddy
What I mean, if you are lucky enough to be born and not aborted, then by God, we will take care of you the rest of your life, for free, no charge. Thank You. Thank You.

Of course those of us in the Senate will have a special plan. Don't come near that door.

Canadian Health ? Don't make me Laugh !
Well , Well , Well .
As a American Running one of Canada's largest Furniture Cos for 9 years . I know much about Canadian terrible Health Care .
If you want to get in a Hot Argument in Toronto ..... Say around some Canadians you LOVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN CANADA .
Your in for a Fight that can lead to more than words .
Here's the facts ..If you want to see a Dr who is a G P it can take 4-6 weeks or longer .... If you need to see a Specialist it can take Two-Three months .
So Energy Rooms are clogged up night and Day and a Night mare .
If you need Hip , Cancer treatments , Heart Surgery it can take a year or Longer .
Remember Canadians Doctors and Nurses make 35-40 % of what Drs. make in America and see far more Patients running them through like Tickets to a Hockey game . That is why they come to America shortly after getting a Free Drs. Education .... as do Surgeons , Radiologist, Dentist and eye Dr.'s do the same thing ....... Wouldn't you Socialist in America ? Hell yes you would !

Terri Schiavo...
While I agree with the author in general I think it was unforturnate to bring up Terri. This was not an issue of access to health care (she had that) it was an issue of the right to die and of who has control over your health when you are unable to make decisions for yourself.

As an RN I have had to deal with this issue on any number of occasions. My wife knows my wishes should I ever be in a condition like Terri's. Everyone should have a living will and a healthcare surrogate to make sure your wished are carried out.

We should consider the Kevorkian airline

Fly a mile high, push the needle, fly a hundred miles over the ocean, and kick open the door.

We could sell a million tickets on the first day.

Kevorkian should receive a medal of some kind.

cost would be cut in half.

The way to reduce Health Care costs is simple. Just eliminate all insurance companies, their buildings, computers, and employees, and get rid of all Government paper-pushers in the health care system.

Give every qualified doctor, hospital, and pharmacy a special computer program, and a blank checkbook so they can write a check each evening for all the services they provided that day.

Make it a Capital Crime to mess with the computer program, and for any lawyer who even talks to a patient, and carry out that punishment within 30 days.

If the doctor makes a mistake, so what, you are most likely there because you made a mistake. If the doctor commits a crime, that’s the problem for the government to punish, not a lawyer who promises a check for the patient.

Just hire a bunch of auditors to randomly check and made sure they aren’t stealing any more than is being stolen today. And on and on.

And I bet the cost would be cut in half.

Completely unaffordable
Government-run health care in the US will be completely unaffordable. We already trillions in debt.

I've heard the arguments -- it won't cost anymore than what the US is (aggregately) spending today. BULL!!

There is not a single governmental program that has not BALLOONED way beyond what it originally was when it started. And have any of them been truly successful? Name one. And no, SS is not what one would call successful.

Free Quality Health Care?
Can anyone even guess what a mammoth increase in demand that would occur if there was free quality health care?

I am a 60+ male who hasn't been a hospital patient in over 40 years, has not seen a doctor for anything but a physical in the same time period. Haven't had an operation since football knee surgery in college. In short any insurance premiums I've paid have been used to care for others.

If I had access to quality health care I can forsee that I would immediately need a complete physical including stress test, blood work up, etc. My football knee has been giving me problems and I feel knee replacement surgery should be given serious consideration.

In short I can go from a healthy guy to needing alot of health care attention is a very short period of time. There are surely millions and millions out there who are just like me!

From each according to his ability. To each according to his need. Suddenly no one as any ability and everyone has tremendous needs. Why does it always work that way?

I keep promising not to say mean things
about the sick and dying, but what am I supposed to do about that rant that Kennedy went on at the D&C/DNC?

The man is like a ranting machine, and even on his death bed, he will be hollering some nasty thing about conservatives, while we politely and respectfully hold our hats in our hands and let him get away with it yet again.

Most countries with socialized medicine
established their programs in the 50's when medicine was far simpler without all the technologies and medications of today. As a result of the increased complexity of modern medicine, countries like Canada and England have confronted costs uninmagined. So too with the Massachusetts plan on which the democrats which to pattern their system, rationing and spending greatly increased because so many gave up their private plans for so-called free government care.

Net result of experience elsewhere....the US can't afford "free medical care".

Which brings up the question of what is exactly a right and where does the list of rights end. Does every one have a right to a house? 3 meals a day? 10 pair of shoes? Air conditioning? A car?
Is it not enough to provide the conditions for everyone to work toward their own "rights"? A safety net for those completely unable because of physical condition, mental illness etc would take care of them truly truly unable to provide for themsevles.

WHY DOES ANYBODY STILL LISTEN TO TED
"the Swimmer?"

Perhaps, Ted can get the SCOMASS to find a right to universal health care in their state constitution, like they were able to find a right to gay marriage in that document, written by John Adams (and other patriotic gays, no boubt) which was ratified in 1780.

Then bring universal health care to Massachussetts, and leave the rest of us alone.

The Right
I wonder how "healthy" Senator Teddy would be today if this "right" had already been enacted?

Jerabaub, do you know anyone who cannot afford health insurance? I don't! I do know individuals who do NOT pay for health insurance because they don't WANT to, if they are sick, they go to the ER!

Where is the outrage here for the nannyisms being foisted on us by dishonest politicians like Senator Teddy? Good God Almighty, where is the American backbone?!?! Where is the vaunted American self-reliance?

Equal Socialism anything has never worked even in a Dictator controlled Russia on Health care on anything else in a totally controlled environment .Or do guarantees on Pipe dreams either .
There are no Equal , Job's , equal means , meals , educations , homes , lives , job skills , Who bares you . color , race or Guarantees in Life .
The Constitution only guarantees life . living a a pursuit of Happiness ........on your own not provided by others !
You need to understand that a man than has Gay Sex with many other men has no right for Tax payers to pay Billionions for his fun and games or women that have 4-6-8 kids out of wedlock .
You need to MOVE TO CANADA OR RUSSIA !

Equal, Quality Healthcare
This is something that can also mean the heathcare the government wants to pay for. And it can mean that people like Kennedy can get the very best of healthcare for free when I am being told that, due to my age and position in life, that I don't need the surgury and care he gets even if I have exactly the same problem.

That's basically how they do it in places like Russia and China. Should I complain? After all, I'm sure Kennedy is more important to SOMEONE than I am.

I wonder ...
Does "doctork" stand for "Doctor Kovorkin"?

No material rights
A "right" that requires the earnings of even one person to be confiscated to pay for that right makes a mockery of rights. This is pure socialism. Why should anyone work just to have a portion of their earnings given to someone else? "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need". When will the Democrats come clean and admit that they are Marxists.

And perhaps Kennedy has forgotten that no American goes without care. Medicaid covers the poor, Medicare covers the elderly, SCHIP covers many children. Of the 47 million that the LEft claims are uninsured Americans a large number are illegal aliens, a larger number are healthy young people that have opted to not purchase insurance and the rest are only temporarily uninsured due to unemployment.

If we go down this socialist road turning back may be impossible as more and more people are hooked on government services. We will lose our freedom of choice, to use a Liberal term which seems to only apply to abortion.

rights ..
A right is an acknowledgment of the natural state of human beings, thus cannot be granted by the State, only recognized.

A right by definition may be freely exercised by the individual, and imposes no positive obligation upon anyone else to facilitate the exercise.

To wit, your right to self-defense does not require the police to follow you about and act as bodyguards. Check, and you will see that there is indeed no positive obligation upon the State to provide you personal protection.

I have a right to free speech. That right does not require you to buy me a megaphone and batteries to power it.

I have a right to my property. If a bird you find particularly attractive and rare happens to live in a tree on my property, you do not have the right to tell me I can't use that tree for fire wood.

Your health care cannot be secured by holding a gun to my head, demanding I fund your medical procedures.

The Kennedy Kingdom
I suppose if a family of socialists lives on a compound, protected by hired gunmen who include vicious dogs on the job, it would be just fine to dictate that others live in not so nice surroundings. I suppose if I was one of the "clan", it would be just fine to cheat on my spouse, murder, be a drunk, take drugs, turn a blind eye to crime and to otherwise be an unAmerican as I made tons of money from attracting the uneducated and ignorant. I hope God does not allow Ted Kennedy, a good Catholic?) to be a part of any mission.

The most important freedom
is the freedom to make mistakes. When a govt, even with the best of intentions, takes away the freedom to smoke, to drive without seat belts, to spank a misbehaving student, it is reducing freedom. Unfettered freedom is anarchy and govt has a vital role, but at some point a line must be drawn and freedom preserved. A govt with the power to give you everything has the power to take away everything. And quite apart from the philosophical factors of freedom and accountability, laws cost money. Every law must be enforced and adjudicated by the expenditure of treasure earned by other than the enforcers. And so we wind up paying for our loss of freedom.

me
You bring up a horrifying truth that needs to be brought to every voter's attention. This is the combination of "universal" health care and the de facto unrestricted number of aliens now inside our borders. We would be in the position of supplying health care to anyone who can get here. Talk to anyone in health care. Why do you suppose a day in a hospital costs $3000? Because medicare/medicaid pays that and it is necessary to support hospital expenses to treat all the aliens and indigents who don't pay. If the American voters are suckered by the likes of Clintons/Kennedys?Obamas/Sharptons we are headed for some educational times. The American public is no tinterested in politics or foreign relations until the wolf is at the door. Pearl Harbor woke the sleeping giant. I hope he is still merely sleeping, not dying.

One Thing is For Sure!
No matter the results of the November elections the democratic party will no longer exist. I had hope the average American Democrat would rise up in revolt to their leadership. It appears this is not going to happen. The current leadership will create a new party in November. "THE LEFTIST PARTY OF AMERICA". A new euphemism to replace communism, socialism, progressivism and Islamism. The party leadership will continue to be made up of all of the above, they just won't let anyone but the party leadership vote. The "silver lining" is they won't last long. Islamisn has made it clear: "We will use your own laws to defeat you and our laws to rule you!"

Doctors
I spoke with my doctor today about the future of health care in the USA.

I was shocked he spoke so blunt.

He told me, "If you want to see the doctors retire in record numbers go ahead and try to impose on them harder measures than they are looking at today"

He told me he would be retiring!

He is about mid to upper 50 ish.

The left wing lunatics will not be happy until every rich man in the USA moves his business to another nation. They refuse to look at the health care in MA. The health care cost in MA is now upside down.

People pushing this insanity has criminal intent. They are insane

No Socialized Medicine!
I get so tired hearing people bemoan their “right” to healthcare. The constitution does not guarantee any such thing. Socialized medicine has increased the cost of healthcare so much that the marketplace no longer dictates price. The individual paying cash because he/she cannot afford insurance frequently has to pay 3 to 4 times as much as the insurance company pays. A recent ad on FoxNews declares that the government should do something because they lost their house due to health costs. Well, after being diagnosed with a brain tumor and surgery, I too lost my home and had to declare bankruptcy. But I don't expect the government to make it up. I have had to go on disability, (I have a Master's degree, 2 BA degrees, and 30 years experience!) and my wife who has no experience has taken a minimum wage job to meet our needs. We lost most everything, so we still sleep on the floor in sleeping bags; our only living room chair is a lawn chair. I don't want pity; I don't want charity; I just want the freedom to get up and do what we can. I have (and claim) no right to take from someone else; and I am tired of others trying to take from me. I don't resent the “rich”, they are the ones providing jobs. It's time to accept responsibilty for ourselves.
